THE ONLY WAY IS UP We’ve had our fair share of short days and cold nights throughout December. Personally, I’m happy to see the back of the shortest day of the year (22nd December). It’s hard not to complain when, according to timeanddate.com, we get a whopping 7 hours, 49 minutes of daylight. Thankfully Christmas is coming (at time of writing) and will soon pass - having just joined the First Time Buyer’s Club, I’m feeling the pinch. But the winter solstice hasn’t always been welcomed with such disdain. It’s an important time of year in many cultures, and was once a festival
celebrated by people in northern Europe, who gathered to celebrate the revival of the sun, bringing with it brighter times ahead.
And I’m chuffed to report that brighter times are, in fact, ahead. York Residents Festival runs on the last weekend of January and for locals that have their library cards, there’s free entry into a shedload of attractions as well as the chance to take advantage of discounts from local shops and cafés. We’ve put together a run down for you on page 56.
We always like to make January’s magazine a little bit special, so we’ve included a handy page of annual information with useful phone numbers, recycling points and bank holidays in 2020 to see you right throughout the year. Pop us in the drawer by the phone for future reference. Looking to set some New Year’s resolutions? Turn to page 48 for inspiration and get yourself off to a head start. As always with Your Local Link, if you’re looking for a local business to help you with your latest project, whatever that might be, then you’ve

come to exactly the right place. We’ve got it all, from solicitors to furniture stores, builders to hairdressers, jobs to gyms - all arranged neatly in handy sections for you to navigate. It’s a new decade and we are, quite frankly, raring to go. So from all of us at Your Local Link, Happy New Year let’s make it a good one!

AND LIFE IN GENERAL January. The month of even less money than usual, following all those Christmas purchases from the Middle of Lidl (a whole ham for £24.99? A complete bargain. Until you chuck away 7/8 of said ham in January, and realise the two slices that actually got eaten cost £12.50 each). Yes, it’s the time to try to recoup some of the money blown on novelty slippers and Betty’s tea-bags. There’s nothing for it: it’s time to start selling things. All the more so, as I have a garage full of items that I can’t accommodate in my own house, including some of questionable taste that I was fortunate enough to inherit. A wood-and-wicker table and chairs, for instance. And two dubious amateur oil paintings of sunflowers, which I can definitely advertise as Van Goghs. I am not a complete novice, having sold two brand-new Velux windows on eBay for 99p in the past. Not to mention a Bosch fridge-freezer for 1p (sic. I almost was).

Rachel Ragg Second-Hand Buying Population is divided into various categories.
The Cheeky Ones
And so it is with high hopes that I sign up for Facebook Marketplace.
I am going to be able to buy all the coats I like in Clarkson’s with the proceeds. It’s pleasingly straightforward to insert an advertisement for a solid oak dining
table and four chairs. I even manage to include some photographs. I’m so cheered by my technological prowess that I also advertise a dresser, an oak sideboard, said wicker-andwood table, a king-sized bed, a Miele washing machine, the Van Goghs, and “some decorative twigs in a metal bucket”. I point out that they are all big and heavy, and need to be collected by two people with a large vehicle. My iPad starts making noises. People are messaging madly. It is a massive success. I am going to be able to buy all the coats I like in Clarkson’s with the proceeds. Or maybe not. For this is where I discover that the
These are the ones who say: “Can you deliver the bed to Pickering?” (No, it won’t fit in my Mini, however hard I try). Or “can you post the table to Scarborough?” (Again: no). See also the ones who say: “The Miele looks a bit old, so how about letting me have it for free?” Though at least they are all up-front. The cheekiest of all are those who load a sideboard into their van, then say: “Oh, I’m so sorry, I know we said £50, but I’ve only got £30. I had three heart attacks last week and I absolutely shouldn’t be CARRYING anything, but I’d better unload it and CARRY it back inside, hadn’t I?” Sigh.
The Ones Who Get Lost

Petergate are not the same thing. Yes, I know St Peter’s has a chapel, but that’s not the Minster. Neither is the Purey Cust. No, I don’t know how you are going to get out of the Purey Cust car-park, and I have no idea how or why you got into the gated community in the first place. And so on. Though these people are better than…
The Ones Who Don’t Turn Up

machine at 5.30pm, and ring at 5.20pm. “We’re just leaving Malton now, so we’ll see you in 15 minutes”. Or the very slight chap who turns up in a Nissan Micra, to collect a gigantic oak bureau (“needs to be collected by two people with a large van”). “I thought it might fit in my trailer,” he explains. Said trailer is the size of a bag of crisps. “But I’m not going to be able to carry it on my own.” He suggests returning the following day with a trolley, but I say a friend and a van might be a better bet. “It would,” he says, “but I asked my friend, and he couldn’t help because his goldfish was going to the dentist”. Ah well. Who needs money anyway? Or so I think, as I settle down in my wicker chair for a nice evening staring at my Van Goghs.

You’ll probably spend the better part of January coming to terms with new work routines and systems, and all should be well if you stay calm and focused. There is some very good advice forthcoming from more than one source, but the voice that says “have a Plan B” must not be ignored! Concomitant with the above, it also seems inevitable that there will be some changes to domestic routines at this time

– and here some extra care may need to be taken not to tread on anyone’s toes and give a very loud shout of “ouch” if someone treads on yours. Nevertheless, this is a bright and opportunistic period for emotional relationships, and those new “domestic routines” can work very well and to everyone’s advantage, given a little time and the application of common sense.

Financially there are some clearly defined benefits to January – some of them quite obvious, others less so. When you do the arithmetic at the month’s end you’ll realise that you’re better off, maybe to the tune of £20 or £30 a month, than you were last year. You are not spending less but you are saving more!

10 Years in10 Minutes don’t hear people being surprised by July though. “Ooh, I can’t believe it’s July.” Don’t hear that too much. So, to celebrate this momentous occasion, I’ve decided to put together a little timeline of York’s most memorable moments over the last decade. How many of them do you remember?
Gordon Bennett, it’s 2020. A whole new decade, sings Aladdin, on his time-travelling magic carpet. I’d say I can’t believe it’s January, but that’s getting old now. I couldn’t believe it was December, November or October either. As a nation we always seem surprised by the autumn and winter months. You
The Queen Visits York
April 2012 We all love Her Maj, so can you imagine how crazy excited we were when she decided to pop in to say hello? So crazy excited that people took time off work and formed crowds (stampedes) around every shop, landmark, nook and cranny in York. For a short while, our lovely little city became the most important place in the country. I mean, I (and other residents) obviously think it’s the most important place all the time. In the world, never mind the country. But you can’t really argue with that statement at all when the Queen’s there.
Claire Brooks
The Tour de France Comes Through York
July 2014 Where were you when the Tour de France came through York? Which yellow bike did you spot first? Which piece of memorabilia were you donning? I had the little bandana, personally. Even if you weren’t a fan of the Tour de France – or cycling in general – you had to be involved in this event because it was such a big deal. The world’s biggest cycling race was coming through our little city. I worked in retail at the time – in the since-closed Vodafone store on Coney Street. And we probably had some of the best seats in the house, as the cyclists went straight past us. That being said, we didn’t get any customers. 1. You couldn’t get past the crowds to get in the shop, and 2. No one in their right mind was going to go to York to actually shop on the day of Tour de France.
York City are Promoted to Football League May 2012 May 2012 was possibly the most important time for the Minstermen in a very long time. With two trips to Wembley in just eight days, then-manager Gary Mills and his team took home the FA Trophy – and saw themselves promoted back into the Football League after beating feisty Luton Town 2-1. I was there for the FA Trophy final against Newport County, which was my first experience of a live match at Wembley. The nerves were still rife though, as most City fans would agree that beating Luton Town for the promotion was more ‘important’. It happened. They did it. Good times.

Vangarde Opens at Monks Cross
April 2014 Most of us have taken to the Vangarde development at Monks Cross like a duck to water – but can you believe we’ve actually only had John Lewis and co. in our lives since 2014? That’s right, back in April we saw the grand opening of the elite department store, as well as neighbouring shops Next and Marks & Spencer. The novelty of this new shopping precinct was clearly more dominant than my actual need to purchase anything, as I visited regularly without spending a penny. I still haven’t, to this day, bought anything from John Lewis. I mean, I still go in all the time and make a little list of all the things I want my imaginary boyfriend to buy me – but that list is no longer little and my boyfriend is still imaginary. Go figure.

December 2015 Residents of York won’t be surprised by flooding in our historic city. But the ‘Boxing Day Floods’ of 2015 were in a whole other league to the almost-annual bout of extra rainfall we usually face. The Environment Agency chose to raise the Foss Barrier after the Ouse and Foss pumping station flooded, resulting in the flooding of over 600 homes. I was lucky as I live in one of the highest places in the area – but I couldn’t get to work. And I knew many people whose houses were gutted. It’s fair to say it was a devastating time for all residents.

Ellie Goulding Gets Married at York Minster
August 2019 British singer/songwriter and international music sensation Ellie Goulding most recently brought superstars from all over the world to our humble city and its outskirts for her wedding at York Minster. The ceremony was attended by celebrity guests including Orlando Bloom and fiancée Katy Perry, and James Blunt – and our very own Archbishop of York led the bride in to meet her groom. Needless to say this event brought a lot of Yorkies out to celebrate. The York Pride that we all have for our beautiful city bounded through residents everywhere as we shared in the excitement that yes, international superstar Ellie Goulding is getting married HERE. In YORK. Because York is the shizz.
So there we have it. Quite a decade we’ve had there – and believe me, I’ve shortened it. A lot. Some honourable mentions include the 2012 Olympic torch coming through York; and the building of the new community stadium. Let’s see what the next ten years bring, eh?

WANDERER WALKING WITH THE
SELBY SAUNTER
This is a walk of just over eight miles exploring some of the countryside to the south and west of Selby. Leaving Selby the route follows the towpath of the Selby canal before heading north to the woodland of Brayton Barff. From here a quick traverse of Thorpe Willoughby’s suburbia leads to an easy path through farmland back to the centre of Selby. Although there are a few muddier stretches much of this walk is on hard surfaces making it a good winter option. Route finding is generally straightforward except at Brayton Barff and in Selby town centre. Areas where special attention is required are underlined in the Directions.
Directions
1 Starting at Selby bus station (the rail station is a few minutes away) go left on the main (Bawtry) road crossing the obvious bridge. Continue until Canal Road joins on the left. Here join the canal towpath going right. 2 The route now follows the towpath for over three miles to Burton Hall Bridge. In more detail: go under several bridges then come to a stile and parking area at Brayton Bridge; cross the road here and carry on passing a picnic bench to keep with the towpath; continue under a road bridge then go through another parking area and under a further road bridge; continue on the now grassed towpath path to another bridge (Burton Hall Bridge) with Drax power station clearly visible to the left and a deep ditch to the right. 3 Turn right here off the towpath onto a car-wide track between hedges. Continue in the same direction as the surface becomes tarmac. At the top of the rise go through a gate to a road.
4 Cross the road and follow the footpath to the right signposted Selby Horseshoe. The path swings left away from the road going gradually uphill to eventually arrive at a junction. Go left here with a road below on the right to arrive at a bridge. 5 Cross the road bridge. On the other side swing left with the path but in ten yards at a junction turn sharp right up a slope. About 100 metres further on look out for a gap in the fence (‘No Fires Allowed’ sign). Through the gap turn almost immediately right following a sometimes indistinct path through the trees running parallel to a fence away to the right. Eventually this path comes to a wider and harder track where you go right. Continue on this with a fence and then a young hedge to the right and views across fields to Selby. Keeping the hill to the left the track leads to a car park. Here partly double back going through a gap by the metal gate on a clear track uphill. Keep on this as it twists right, the hill still to the left, until you eventually drop down to an exit from the woodland at a road. 6 Cross the road and turn left on the roadside pavement (the bridleway directly opposite is

What to see Selby’s main attraction is its ancient Abbey open to visitors daily from 9am-4pm. Founded in 1069, notable features are the Norman nave and ‘decorated’ chancel. The Selby Canal linking the Ouse to the Aire at West Haddlesey was opened in 1778 and remains navigable. 52 metre high Brayton Barff and its neighbour Hambleton Hough to the west are isolated hillocks in an otherwise flat landscape. Owned by Yorkshire Water and with a covered reservoir at its top, the Barff is mainly covered with oak woodland managed for wildlife. There’s a fine display of bluebells in spring. A popular circular walk, much of which is traversed here, leads around the site.
Getting there The walk starts from Selby bus station. Bus 415 departs at 15 minute intervals from York Piccadilly to Selby during the day Monday to Saturday (every 30 minutes on Sunday) taking approximately 45 minutes. There is also a train service from York to Selby taking about 30 minutes. If driving Selby is 14 miles south of York via the A19. Long stay parking is available in Back Micklegate and Portholme Road car parks. An alternative is to park on the street in Thorpe Willoughby and begin the walk from there. currently closed). Ignore the first road on the right but turn into the second (Fox Lane). Continue along this straight road passing a few shops to a busy road by the Fox pub. Turn right but after 150 metres turn left down Dam Lane going over a level crossing. Continue on this road (no pavement so take care) over a narrow bridge to find a footpath on the right signed ‘Selby Horseshoe’.

8 Turn right here and keep straight on at a mini roundabout by a school. At the next mini roundabout turn right into Scott
Road. After 75 metres go left, round to the rear of the Selby Community Centre and in front of the Scott Road Pharmacy. Go along the paved path across the grassy area with playground and then a pond on the right to the car park ahead. In the car park make toward the Sainsbury’s store, passing it and Wilco on the left to go down Abbey Walk. Cross straight over a road to a wide alley that leads onto Finkle Street. Turn right here to the Market Place, then left toward the Abbey. At the traffic lights by the Abbey cross to head right back to the bus station.

7 Follow the footpath with a hedge to the left eventually reaching a squeeze stile. Beyond this continue with hedges on each side to emerge onto a car wide track. Go along this passing a farm until the track joins a tarmac lane where you keep right towards Selby. Soon houses start on the left and you arrive at a road junction by a playground.

THIS MONTH: YORK RAILWAY STATION
With the Council still batting around ideas about how to change and improve access to our dear old train station, we decided to look back to the beginnings of that iconic building.
TRYING AGAIN Our current station is actually something of a second attempt by civic leaders to get it right. As we’ve detailed in these pages in the past, York’s first proper station was inside the walls – what is now the headquarters of City of York Council. That original building was a ‘dead-end’ station, so trains needed to reverse back
out to continue their journey. This was fine when rail traffic was relatively light in the mid-19th century, but it soon caused problems and massive delays. A new ‘through-line’ station was needed to replace it.
STATUS BUILDING North Eastern Railway architects William Peachy and Thomas Prosser were hired to design the new complex, intended
to showcase York as the ‘heart of the Victorian rail network’. Once completed in 1877, it was the largest train station in the world, with an 800-foot grand curved roof and 13 platforms. The first train departed at 5.30am on 25th June, bound for Scarborough over the newly reinforced Scarborough rail bridge. As well as the station itself, a luxurious hotel was also constructed attached to it. Just like the one the original station had enjoyed, the hotel was intended to give tourists and businesspeople a grand place to stay after disembarking into the grand new railway station. Both boosted the status of York and improved communications and travel for the whole country.
CH-CH-CHANGES Changes were made to the station some decades later, and in 1909 additional platforms were added to cope with growing demand. It was also at this time that the North Eastern Railway company built their headquarters here in
20
York. Now The Grand Hotel, opposite the original station building, it added to York’s importance as a transport and business hub. In 1938 the footbridge over the tracks that we still have today was built, adding to the existing subways. However, just four years later the station was heavily bombed during an air raid. On the evening of 29th April 1942, 800 passengers were evacuated from a train bound for Edinburgh to seek shelter from the falling bombs. That same night two station workmen were killed, including the foreman, William Milner. Milner died as he rushed back into his burning office to retrieve a first aid box to help other wounded workers. He was posthumously given the King’s Commendation for Gallantry for the act, and you can see a plaque dedicated to him in the station today.
Following some major repairs in 1947, things ticked along quite happily at the station until the ‘80s. Much of the station was reorganised and an electric wiring system was introduced. Some platforms were also removed, and if you’ve ever

parked a bike at the station you’ve done so on these decommissioned platforms. The 1980s also saw the old tearooms, situated by the pedestrian entrance, transformed to house a Model Railway Exhibition, where it remained until 2011. It’s now a pub. Because York. Ticket barriers were planned to be installed earlier this decade, requiring all passengers to have a ticket to get access to the platforms. This was fought off by City of York Council, however, arguing that it would spoil the look of the Victorian architecture. We agree, plus it’s always nice to pop into the Costa there if you’re passing by.

SPORT
Local Happy New Year! Hopefully it will be for York City, as their quest for automatic promotion has hit the skids in recent weeks. It certainly hasn’t been won by Christmas, which some were predicting. In last month’s column I rejoiced in the victory away to Chester, which felt like a throwback to the Football League, with a big crowd, great atmosphere, solid performance and a well-deserved victory – putting the Minstermen eight points clear at the top. However, at the time of writing, they’re now three points behind leaders Kings Lynn, who I’m pretty sure were one of the favourites to get relegated before a ball was kicked. The next away game I went to, after Chester, was Curzon Ashton – which was a huge contrast in emotions to the journey to and from North Wales. It started when arriving in Ashton looking for the ground, commenting: “Is that it? No, don’t be silly – that’s just a leisure centre. Oh, hang on…”
Worse was to come, when a steward – in all seriousness – said: “I don’t think I can let him in,” pointing at my friend. “I don’t trust him”. “Why not?” He’s one of the nicest, most placid people you could ever meet, and was just queuing to get through the turnstile. “Because he’s ginger!” No excuse for the hostile ‘banter’ – particularly as our small group had trebled Curzon’s average attendance. But I kept my hat on in case the steward was also bald-ist. We laughed in embarrassment at the protagonist whilst thinking: ‘This will be a side note from a day where we will surely win 4-0 against a team who hasn’t won at home all season, are lodged in the bottom three and are playing one young lad up front who looks like he hasn’t yet started shaving; against our meaty backline of Tait (Joe, not me), Newton and McNulty’. Of course, it wouldn’t be York City without losing the game 1-0 and the striker, who, taking time out from his boy band schedule, caused problems for our defence all afternoon. Onto boxing now and it’s great to see all three of the city’s most high profile boxers, George Davey, Michael Fafera and Cam Shaw, winning – 2020 will be a big year for all of them. Fafera had to overcome a knock
ERE H PIC
down in his last fight to win his sixth contest; Davey won his second pro fight with a points shutout over Dale Arrowsmith in Birmingham; whilst Shaw was victorious for the third time in less than two months with an equally convincing win over Nabil Ahmed in Hull. Of course, the main event in recent times has been the redemption for Anthony Joshua who overcame his previous conqueror, Andy Ruiz Jr – who admitted after his convincing defeat and tipping the scales at over 20 stones that he may have come in too heavy after attending too many parties celebrating following the first fight. You’ve got to love his honesty and he comes across as such a nice guy, but I did think after watching the ‘gloves are off’ in the build-up, it hadn’t gone unnoticed by me that Joshua sat there in training gear with his muscles bulging out of his training top, opposite casual Andy in his jeans and midriff tight against the table. Hopefully 2020 is the time for Joshua, or probably more like his promoters, to actually get the big fights made.

further events to mark a special 12 months for the York City legend, including a tribute dinner at York Racecourse in March and a Golf Day at the end of the season. The ‘Grand Football Quiz’ will take place at Acomb Conservative Club on Monday 20th January 2020. The club is run by well-known York City stalwart Shane Winship, who has kindly offered the hire of his facilities free of charge – a magnificent gesture. Hosting the quiz will be long-serving York City supporter and season ticket holder Mark Woodhouse, who promises an evening that will separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to knowledge of York City FC and football in general. First prize will be York Minstermen’s legendary Navvies’ Breakfast, with runnersup prizes also available, as well as a fundraising raffle. A traditional football lover’s pie and pea supper will be served on the night as part of your entry fee. Doors open at 7pm with the quiz starting at 8pm, and entry is £5 per person with a maximum of four quizzers in a team. The plan is to bring together the York City supporting family in a night full of fond memories, brain bashing and general merriment for a great cause and a great player.

YOUR MOTORS & GADGETS
MOTORING NEWS
THE WHEEL DEAL GADGET GUIDE Throughout each year, the Department for Transport issues its Vehicle Licensing Statistics – a document that tells us exactly how people are using the roads. We checked out the latest re-port from Q2 – how do you fit within these stats?
// WE’RE BUYING MORE CARS Here in Britain we saw a 1.3% increase in the amount of licensed vehicles compared to last year. What’s more interesting is that this figure has consistently increased year on year since the end of the Second World War – except for in 1992. Everyone must have got on their pushbikes that year. Buses and coaches actually saw a decrease, dropping by 2.3%, and LGVs were the most in-creased statistic at 3.1%. Ford took the top spot for the most registered make – with 10% of new car registrations manu-factured by the American company. The top new car model registered was the Ford Fiesta at 1.5 million, so a double whammy for Ford.
// GOING GREEN
// MARCHING ON
Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV) are a focus for the government, with the Road to Zero strategy committing to half of new cars registered being ULEV by 2030. And while the amount of new ULEV registered in Q2 was 7% less than those registered by the same point in 2018, it was a whopping 30% increase since 2017.
Whilst we don’t yet know the results for the full year, so far the most popular month to buy a car has been March – with an impressive 556,000 registered. Interestingly, the most sold in a month before that was September 2018, with 416,000.
There was a clear leader in the race for the most popular ULEV model: the Mitsubishi Outlander with a huge 8,712 models registered compared to the BMW 5 Series in second place with 6,547. Could this be because the Mitsubishi sponsors almost every programme going on Chan-nel 4? Arguably not.

Are you an individual business owner or the director of a company in search of affordable, sustainable growth and development? If so, maybe you’ll substitute your New Year’s resolution to give up eating chocolate for a more attainable objective! Local businessman Richard Gadd, Founder and Managing Director of Developing Business Excellence, is offering business improvement consultancy, executive coaching and mentoring to discerning professionals in person, online or by telephone. Securing any sort of training these days is invariably expensive, impersonal, unregulated, and unaccredited. Want to eliminate those risks, and secure personcentred, values-based services to deliver bespoke business solutions that
‘enable others to succeed’? Why not try Developing Business Excellence? With more than 30 years’ experience leading and managing winning, multi-disciplinary teams, Richard is the ‘consummate professional’, promoting the same high standards of others that he demands of himself. Richard is a certified management consultant, Level 7 Executive Coach and Mentor, and Stress and Resilience Practitioner. His values are respect for others, transparency, accountability, authentic leadership, integrity and, always important, a sense of humour. Get the ball rolling and make 2020 a year of success by calling 01904 400700 or visiting www. developingbusinessexcellence.co.uk

Selling your house in 2020 LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD
Kitchens by Herbert Todd’s I am very pleased to formally invite all our Your Local Link readers to the grand opening event of our new kitchen studio on Saturday 8th of February within our Monks Cross showroom. On the day we will not only have offers on our stunning kitchen ranges and appliances, competitions and goody bags, but we will also have a professional chef on hand preparing food using the latest steam and induction technologies so that you can ask questions, and see and taste some amazing food. We are using our 83 years of customer service to make sure that every kitchen we design, supply and fit (or supply only if you have a fitter you’d like to
use) will be to the highest standard. If you already have a design from another company then drop in and see Mel just in case she can make some improvements for you without costing any extra! If you can’t wait until February then we would love to see you in store before then and I can promise you inspirational German made kitchens, probably the finest cup of free coffee in York, a free home measure and design service from our new kitchen designer, and the best prices for anyone ordering a kitchen in January (plus a FREE built-in dishwasher OR boiling tap depending on your choice of kitchen).
Please check our Facebook page and website for further information on kitchens by Herbert Todd’s… and very Happy New Year to all!
Is 2020 the year you’re planning on selling your house? Fear not. Despite Brexit rumbling on, the UK’s biggest mortgage lender, Halifax, has predicted a modest house price increase into the New Year. While you might not be able to do much about the modest increase in house prices, you can still make small affordable changes to your home to increase its kerb appeal and get more feet through your door. We spoke to local expert, Jonathan Dawson, Associate Director at Ewemove York to see what you could do to help your house sell without breaking the bank: “I’m often asked by homeowners looking to move: ‘where in the house should I focus my attention?’ in preparation for putting the house on the market. “The answer will, of course, depend on the outcome you want. Adding value will most likely involve more costly improvements, but with some simple
and often inexpensive changes that can easily improve the saleability of the home. “I’m a firm believer that first impressions really do count. This makes the external ‘kerb appeal’ of your property your first port of call. If you’ve put off replacing that broken fence panel, painting the tatty front door or tidying up the front garden, now is the time to do it. A really big one for me is pressure washing your drive and patio. No one likes a green patio! “The first impression of the outside will naturally paint a picture of what to expect on the inside. Paint the perfect picture on the outside and your buyers will be even more excited to see what’s on the inside.” For more information visit www. ewemove.com/york or call 01904 263263 to speak to the experts about selling your house this year.

WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN DURING JANUARY Welcome to January! It might be cold and frosty out there, but there’s still plenty to be getting on with in your garden. The lovely folk at Dean’s Garden Centre are here to give you their recommendations – from trees to maintenance to flowers! THE FLOWER GARDEN • Sow seeds of Begonia, Sweet Pea and Himalayan Poppy in a heated greenhouse or propagator to provide early plants. • In cold spells, protect non frost-proof pots with fleece or bubble wrap to prevent cracking. • Purchase Hellebores, Snowdrops or other potted spring bulbs to give you an instant burst of colour THE FRUIT & VEGETABLE GARDEN • Start growing potatoes in containers under cover for a very early crop. Patio potato planters are ideal for smaller spaces. • Raspberry canes can still be planted out on a sunny site with well-drained soil. • Dig over vacant plots, ensuring you clear old crops and weeds away, whilst mixing with compost. • Plant herbs in windowsill trays. Parsley, Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme, Chives and Mint thrive on a sunny windowsill. • Apple and Pear trees can be pruned whilst they are dormant, to re-shape and help increase fruit buds.
TREES & SHRUBS • Plant roses, but avoid planting them in areas where roses have previously been to prevent replant disease. • For winter interest in the garden, plant scented winter flowering shrubs such as Sarcococca, Hamamelis, Cornus and Vibrunum. • Now is the perfect time to relocate established shrubs and trees, providing the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. • Prune deciduous trees and shrubs to create the perfect shape for future months. INDOOR PLANTS • Water houseplants sparingly as they don’t need as much during winter. The soil should be barely moist. LAWN CARE • Don’t walk on frosty lawns as this will cause scorch marks, which will turn the grass black/brown. Consider laying stepping stones for access and to prevent scorch. We have a range of stepping stones which can be found in our paving department. • If your lawn becomes waterlogged, spike the lawn with an aerator or garden fork, then fill the holes with sharp sand and loam to help with drainage.

THE WATER GARDEN • Use a pond heater or floats in your pond to prevent the surface water from freezing over, which can be fatal to fish and other pond life. • Keep an eye on water levels in your pond as hard frosts can cause cracks in the liner. If the level drops considerably, you may have a leak. Keep topped up until repairs can be done in the spring. Garden Maintenance • Wash out old pots using a mild detergent and hot water to reduce bacterial and fungal spores. Rinse out well afterwards. • Put lagging around outdoor taps to prevent them from freezing, so you can still use them during the winter months. Future Planning • Keep putting out high energy food and water for the birds during the cooler months. • Think where you can put up bird boxes in sheltered areas before the nesting season begins.

YOUR HOME & GARDEN
Join The Plotters Could you do with some exercise? Do you feel the need to get outside more away from all those screens? Are you looking for a new pastime or challenge? Would fresh fruit and vegetables improve your diet? If the answer to any of these questions is yes or even maybe, you should consider getting an allotment plot. York is fortunate in having a good number of allotments. There are 16 sites managed by York Allotment Charitable Incorporated Organisation (YACIO) on behalf of York City Council, a few sites run by private organisations and allotment associations and allotments provided by parish councils. YACIO has nearly 1,400 plots. A map showing their location and information on how to get a plot can be found at yorkallotments.org. A complete list of York sites, including those that aren’t run by YACIO, is available through the City Council’s website at www.york.gov.uk/AllotmentsDirectory. This helpful listing also includes location maps and information on application procedures. As a rule, sites maintained by parish councils within the York City Council area are only available to those living within the parish.
Allotments are popular so it’s sometimes necessary to wait quite a time to get a plot. YACIO’s website indicates how many people are on the list by site. Although some sites have more applicants than plots, the length of time spent waiting for a plot to become available varies so don’t be put off. Because it’s possible to join the list easily online and apply for more than one site, many of those apparently waiting never actually take a plot. As a rule it’s sites closest to the city centre with the longest lists. Those further out are shorter. Sometimes it’s possible to get a plot within months, especially in the New Year when some plot holders decide not to renew their annual tenancy. Plot rentals vary. YACIO’s annual rent for a traditional 300 square yard plot is £96. Half and quarter plots rents are £48 and £24 respectively. Reductions of 40% are available to those receiving a state pension, registered disabled, in receipt of universal credit or full time students. Non-YACIO and parish council sites levy their own rents. These are generally lower than YACIO’s.

With half and quarter plots available, dismissing taking a plot on the grounds it’ll be too big to manage is no excuse! In fact, on many sites, due to high demand, it’s only half and quarter plots that are offered to newcomers. Managing a 75 square yard quarter plot, that’s well under the floor area of the average house, shouldn’t be too demanding. What’s more on most sites you aren’t restricted to just
EXPERT
Tony Chalcraft growing fruit and vegetables. Although it’s expected that the plot will be used to grow some food, cultivating flowers or other non-edibles is normally permitted. There are other aspects to an allotment besides what you can grow. Allotments can be a quiet haven, a refuge from the concerns of daily life. In most case they are also very social spaces. Many sites have associations that hold events and gatherings. Some also have member shops selling seeds and other gardening necessities at discount prices. In an increasingly frantic world, where the value of fresh food and the natural cycle is often overlooked, allotments can provide a perfect antidote. If you make only one New Year’s resolution for 2020, make it joining the plotters.

G o t a g ar d en in g q u e st i on? Ask CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
BROWN NURSERIES
If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk or call Chris on 766266. Q. Could you please advise me on plants that flower in winter with attractive leaf and stem colours? We seem to have lots of colour in summer, but not a lot in winter! There are lots of pretty and nicely scented shrubs, perennials and trees that flower in winter, attracting insects to pollinate them. When it comes to trees, you can’t beat prunus subhirtella autumnalis, which flowers from autumn to early spring and is a beautiful tree for a smaller garden. As for winter-flowering shrubs, Chimonanthus praecox 'wintersweet' is large and slow-growing, and is famous for its very fragrant, small, cup-shaped flowers. Daphne odora 'aureomarginata' is best suited in a sheltered position. This vigorous and upright evergreen forms a good and low ground cover, with it dense, needlelike foliage. Spikes of small, dark-pink bell flowers continue into spring. Hamamelis x intermedia 'pallida', in autumn, has large, softly-haired leaves which turn orange-red and scarlet in winter, and spidery yellow flowers
cover the bare branches. You’ll need to provide this shrub with acidic soil that isn’t too dry. Viburnum x bodnantense 'dawn' flowers from autumn through to the spring – and the leafless twigs of this popular and reliable shrub are studded with clusters of strongly fragrant pink flowers. Perennials that flower in winter include adonis 'vernalis'. In late winter and spring, cupped golden yellow flowers top the clumps of deeply divided, ferny, bright green leaves. It flowers earlier in containers, or if sheltered. Crocus 'tominanus' is a popular plant that produces slender-tubed, scented, pale-silvery flowers from winter to early spring. Don’t worry – nature shines even in winter! Q. I was given a climbing rose for a present – how should I prune it? Modern climbers most commonly grow against fences and walls. The aim here must be to fan out the main stems so that laterals can be trained sideways like modern bush roses. The main pruning season is also the same from autumn, after the sequence of
flowering has finished, to early spring. It’s just as well to prune in autumn, so that any long, whippy shoots can be shortened or tied in before the strong winter winds come in, blow them apart and damage them. In cooler climates, the extra protection afforded by the wall should minimise any frost damage and deadhead, and tie in growth throughout the growing season. You’ll find much longer shoots on climbers than bedding roses, and these shouldn’t be pruned, except to tidy up minor damage – leaving plenty of buds from which new shoots can break when growth begins. It’s really important to leave stems intact when the rose is a sport of a bush rose. For these, the word ‘cultivar’ name will be prefixed by the word ‘climbing’ – as in ‘climbing iceberg’. Pruning at this stage may encourage it to revert to its original bush form once growth begins, so if the stem or stems are slow to branch then here’s a bit of advice: prune them to the first strong outward-facing bud on outer stems to encourage laterals to develop. Fan out
Chris Brown
the main stems from the start, spacing them evenly, and tie in laterals, training them to the horizontal. During their development the stems must still be young and pliable, tied in, well-spaced, and form a strong, well-structured framework. Until then, no other pruning is required except to remove dead, damaged, diseased or spindly, leafless growth – along with any suckers – and to deadhead repeat flowering climbers to encourage subsequent flowering.

e r u t a n f o e c r o F By the time you read this there’s a good chance that episode nine of the Star Wars saga, The Rise of Skywalker, has been released. You might already have seen it, and the chances are strong that I will have, too. Normally I reserve my column in the January issue for a Christmas piece; some saccharine dip into domestic excitement, or a sarcastic voyage to Christmases past. This year, however, I’ve decided to take a different angle and write about my state of mind. Don’t worry, sensitive British folk – this is not my second mental health tell-all. It is, in fact, an admission. You see, since the age of about eight, I’ve been convinced that I am… a Jedi.
Luke at me If you don’t know what a Jedi is, allow me to explain. Nope, not going to do that. Jedis have been a part of popular culture since 1977, so if you don’t have at least a vague idea, I have no time for you. Read something else. My suspicion that I was “force sensitive” began with a shoe in a tree. A friend of mine had accidentally got his shoe stuck in a tree, for what reason remains a mystery to this very day. Regardless, the shoe was in a tree in the school playing field, and moisture was soaking into his sock. He was distressed. Child after child was casting stones, twigs, and large, ‘80s gobstoppers toward the shoe, in hopes of knocking it free. They all failed. Because the Force was not strong in any of them. Enter young Howie.
Duel of Fates To the sounds of mockery (for I
was not known for my athletic prowess – shocker) I picked up a stray tennis ball and took aim. It was my intention to make it a joke, to declare loudly ‘can’t you even hit that?’, throw the ball, miss, and follow up with ‘well neither can I!’ That’s self-deprecating humour, which was very popular amongst eight year olds in former mining villages in 1980s
Howard Mosley
Playing it cooler than I’ve ever, or since, played it, I calmly uttered: ‘The Force is strong in this one.’ I sauntered away, leaving gasps and revelry in my wake.
I sensed an ordered presence around me. South Yorkshire, for those of you that haven’t seen Kez. However, as soon as I cast the ball, and felt the soft green fluff of the sphere depart my hand, I sensed an ordered presence around me. Something guided that ball as it flew, and seconds later it struck the shoe and dislodged it. As it fell to the ground a stunned silence took over the gathered children, and they turned as one to look at me.

Believe me From that day I’ve always felt very Jedi-y. Now, I’m not a religious person, and I understand that at this time of year, you might be. But if I was to believe in anything, Jediism (official term) would be well up there, second only to ‘science’. As belief systems go, it’s pretty cool. The idea that there is a force of nature

binding all living things is nice, especially when it lets you move objects with your mind. Which is something I’ve been attempting to do since that fateful day on the school field. I’ve honestly never heard of any reference to telekinesis in Christianity, Islam, or Judaism, so there’s really no competition. Plus, there are no space battles in the story of the nativity, and there definitely will be some in The Rise of Skywalker. Just saying. With Disney’s purchase of Star Wars we’re getting an increasing amount of content. The release of a new Star Wars around Christmas time is something I’ve been enjoying and look forward to traditional festive signifiers being blended with those from a galaxy far, far away. Maybe in a few years we’ll pop a little R2-D2 on the top of the

Christmas tree, and drink blue milk before opening presents. Turkey will be carved with a lightsaber, while children will sing carols about banthas, wookies, and Jar Jar Binks. Plus, thanks to climate change, December in the UK will look more like the desert world of Tatooine, so that all works out well.
May the Force be with you Whatever you make of the movie, I hope you have had a nice festive period. If you’re tempted to pop into a church for a cosy coral concert, consider attending my Jediism meeting, instead. We sit around in a circle allowing the ghost of an old man to whisper encouragement to us, while lusting after our sisters in true Luke Skywalker fashion. If you don’t get any of these references, we’re no longer friends.

TIMMY What a handsome young man Timmy is! He was sadly found all alone in awful conditions, and therefore Timmy is very shy. He’ll need patient owners who are experienced with nervous dogs – that already have a confident pup, as Timmy finds other dogs bring out the best in him. Could you be that person?
Visit www.rspca-yorkhome.org.uk or call 654949 SHIRLEY Many people take the small things in life for granted but for people living with disabilities, everyday activities can be tricky. That’s where Remap York comes in. The local branch provides custom-made equipment with a group of skilled volunteers to solve everyday challenges encountered by disabled people. One of York’s most recent projects was to create a bespoke eating utensil for Hollie, who is unable to bend her right arm. With assistance from Minster Engineering in York, Remap York created a turntable complete with arm rest for bowls of food. Other recent
projects have included a child’s head support, bicycle turning indicators and a snooker cue rest. Donations are always welcome. Visit www.york.remap.org.uk for more information, or keep up with the national charity on social media @remapUK.
You’ll have to excuse the scowl on this young madam’s face! Poor Shirley here isn’t very happy with her current living arrangements at the Centre, and is hoping someone out there in Your Local Link Land can help her. She was brought in on the understanding that she was a socialised kitten, however that wasn’t the case – Shirley has missed out that all-important socialisation period with humans, usually best carried out between two and eight weeks old, and as such she doesn’t really like us that much and would rather spend her days living away from people. As a feral cat, Shirley will make someone an excellent mouser, a perfect
environmentally friendly pest controller! Shirley is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and more than ready for a new life. She’s seeking a new home in a rural location and would be happy living in a cosy barn or a snug stables. If you think you have room on your farm, smallholding, stables or have a suitable outbuilding and need a helping hand to keep wayward rodents in check, please contact the Centre on 01904 760356 or via the Contact page at www.york. cats.org.uk.

body&Sole We all know how important it is to look after our bodies, but did you know that with a little stimulation they can work to heal themselves? Alison Gray of York Reflexology is a qualified Complementary Therapist ITEC, and offers a variety of services – including full body massage, Indian head massage, and of course, reflexology. But what exactly is reflexology? Based on ancient principles, reflexology is a type of acupressure massage that stimulates points on the feet corresponding with muscles, glands and organs. This stimulation then encourages your body to heal itself – helping to restore balance and aid your wellbeing. Working from her own premises in
Heworth, Alison says: “My therapy suite offers a peaceful haven – the ideal space to relax, unwind and get the full benefit from your treatment. “At your first appointment a detailed consultation will be conducted, so that I can tailor a treatment plan that will give you optimum results.” So, if you’d like to improve your wellbeing, discover a deeper sense of relaxation, or improve the balance in your body, why not give Alison a call and see how she can help you? For more information visit www.yorkreflexology. co.uk or call 01904 413606.

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU
New Year’s Resolutions: DO YOU MANAGE TO KEEP YOURS? Introducing our new sport and exercise expert: Dr Dane Vishnubala. This month he talks about how to stick to those New Year’s resolutions. Every year most of us come up with hopes and goals for the coming year. Many will include beginning a physical activity or lifestyle changes. Whatever your resolution is for 2020 - consider these five steps to help you on your way.
Step 1: Your Goal
Only you know YOU! Ask yourself; is this a realistic, achievable goal for you? We all need goals and targets, but remember to break them down into smaller chunks in order to achieve them, that way it doesn’t become a major event and you won’t lose heart early on! It could be a target that can be measured in numbers or even a feeling.
Step 2: Ink makes everything real
Write down your goal and the answers to the following questions: Why do I want to achieve this goal or change a habit? Why don’t I currently do it or why have I slipped into this habit? What are the different ways I intend to
make the changes? What will I do if a day or week doesn’t go so well?
Step 3: Sharing is caring
Tell people about your plan - they may even have the same ambitions as you and join you in your journey! The more people you tell, the more accountable you will become. Friends and family are a good source of support, opinion and advice.
Step 4: Nudges, Pushes, Shoves
I love this concept. Nudges are things put in place to remind us or encourage us the way we want to go. Health apps on phones and wearable technology are all great for nudging us in the right direction, many do this by vibrating, reminding us that its time for action! Don’t delay set yours up today.
Step 5: Evaluate, evaluate, evaluate
Regularly evaluate how you are progressing. The key to being successful when starting a new regime or changing behaviour is careful planning.

Rooting For You Forget raisins and prunes – we’re making a date with Garbutt + Elliott for the 2020 Yorkshire Food + Drink Business Awards on the 23rd April, held at York Racecourse’s glitzy Parade Ring Restaurant. Following the success of last year’s Yorkshire Food + Drink Business Awards in 2019, Garbutt + Elliott are bringing the competition back again this year for 2020 – and they’re introducing five new categories. One of which, the Spirit of Yorkshire Award, is sponsored by us! Independent chartered accountants, auditors and advisors, Garbutt + Elliott, are celebrating their passion for the food and drink industry in Yorkshire with these awards – which opened for entrants on 18th October. Over 62,000 people are said to work in the industry across Yorkshire and the Humber alone – with some of the world’s best-known food companies coming from our region. Despite being a fiercely competitive region where food and drink is concerned, it’s also a highly supportive network – and Garbutt + Elliott aim to help build new relationships by bringing together small and large businesses in one spectacular event. Russell Turner, Managing Partner, Garbutt + Elliott says: “Our awards are now firmly fixed in the regional food industry’s calendar. What sets them apart is their accessibility – small businesses can enter the same categories as those who have a position in the international marketplace, and they have just as much a chance of winning.
“We’re proud to be celebrating 15 categories within the food and drink sector and have a diverse group of judges of exceptional calibre, who will be whittling down the shortlisted businesses.” So, are you a big cheese in the food and drink industry and fancy being considered for an award? Do you know someone who deserves to take a trophy home? Or maybe you’ve been to a restaurant or bought a product that you loved so much you want to spread the word? Well, you’re in luck – because the categories will be open for entries until the 31st January, and you can enter by visiting www.garbutt-elliott.co.uk/ food-awards.
