YORK LIFE
Welcome, officially, to summer! It’s July, It’s the seventh month, and we’re halfway through 2019. Yeah – where’s the time gone? Well, it’s gone into failed Brexit deals, coming last in the Eurovision Song Contest (again), a February heatwave, vegan sausage rolls #Greggs, and an all-English UEFA Champions League Final. Sorry, Spurs. #toosoon If you’re anything like us here in the Your Local Link offices, then you’ll be able to tell the months of 2019 apart purely by the different TV series’ you’ve been watching. Events Writer Claire still won’t stop talking about The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix – based on the Archie comics and with some of the same characters from the
going to happen in the next episode of your favourite show while at work, but you’ve got one colleague who’s always late to the party and has to watch on catch up, then we feel your pain. Designer Zoe is ours. At one point she yelled across the studio to nip a Game of Thrones conversation in the bud before it got out of hand and she heard the spoilers. TV conversations will continue to prevail as 2019 continues, having looked at the future releases. This month alone brings the new series of Stranger Things to Netflix, as well as the final series of Orange is the New Black. And of course, there’s the standard reality shows as we get closer
‘teenage’ 90s-sitcom but absolutely not the same thing. Distributions Manager Gary has been so hooked on Game of Thrones that he’s regularly gravitated into the design office whenever he’s heard it being mentioned. No one was particularly happy with the ending, so the arrival of Chernobyl was pretty well received. Meanwhile, those of us without Sky or NOW TV continued on with terrestrial (do you still call it that these days?). Then there’s Britain’s Got Talent. Well, well, well. The controversy. Yes, it was lovely to see 89-year-old Army veteran Colin Thackery take the title… but… X was mind blowing. #spoileralert If you enjoy nattering about what’s SARAH

to the end of the year. Let’s not talk about love island. So brace yourselves for cliff-hangers, plot twists and screamat-the-TV moments. Right then, we’ll let you crack on with your day. But before we go, let us leave you for the month with this one request: don’t wait to watch on catch up. Do the right thing for your colleagues. Share the moment. Start the conversation. Watch it live. Don’t make appointments that clash. Don’t be that guy. See you in August! The Your Local Link team x

Garbutt + Elliott keeps mental wellbeing front of mind When it comes to mental health – why, as an employer, should you care?
Chloe Owens HR and Operations Manager
The answer is binary and simple: One, people matter – it’s as simple as that. The human side of caring should come above all else. Two, because business is business and caring for your employees makes good business sense.
Is there really an issue out there or is it “all talk”? Research by the Mental Health awareness charity Mind, confirms that a culture of fear and silence around mental health has a huge impact on employers and is costly beyond just finances, negatively affecting both staff productivity and rates of employee turnover. Their research shows over 20% of employees had called in sick to avoid work, 14% had resigned due to workplace stress, a further 40% had considered resigning and 30% did not feel that they could talk to their manager. HR consultancy AdviserPlus’ records suggest that since 2013, 33.9% of absence days in the financial services sector have been due to mental ill-health. Furthermore, research from CABA, a charity that supports chartered accountants’ wellbeing, shows that 32% of employees would hide mental distress from their workplace.
What initiatives can you take to tackle mental ill health?

At Garbutt + Elliott we work hard to ensure that we have created a positive workplace, where we constantly strive to improve our culture around mental health. We have taken strong measures, working with NHS initiative Mindful Employer, to ensure that we are able to provide our staff with the support that they need. Mental health and wellbeing at work is about supporting people and providing a safe environment so that they feel understood and valued. By creating a culture where people are encouraged to talk about their mental health and where both employee and employer seek solutions when needed, you create a more productive, happy and successful working environment.
Can you really achieve work / life balance for staff? Yes. Garbutt + Elliott are mindful of the prevailing phenomenon of presenteeism in the financial industry, where people do not stop working even when they are ill. We continue to position ourselves as a company where we encourage, rather than silence, conversation about mental health and regularly remind our staff ‘it’s okay to not be okay’. We strive to ensure our employees have a healthy work/life balance, by creating a non-pressured setting, and actively encourage staff, at all levels, to work within their expected hours. We have a strong flexible working culture, to enable well-balanced family lives.

Ultimately, we believe that our reputation for encouraging work/life balance and openness around mental wellbeing is making us increasingly attractive to potential employees. We already employ the top regional talent who stay with us for years – not least because we provide a supportive, friendly and pleasant working environment. With reports suggesting that offering wellbeing support can increase employee engagement and productivity by 23%, we hope that by continuing our good work on creating a collaborative, supportive and communicative working environment, we are providing the building blocks to a mentally well-balanced life.

YORK LIFE
YORK LIFE
AND LIFE IN GENERAL Regular readers of this column might remember the York School of Charm. For those who are less regular (or who suffer from Middle Aged Brain), this notable training college produces all those ‘anything is too much trouble’ staff whom we encounter when we’re trying to do something outlandish and completely unreasonable like post a parcel at a Post Office or buy a train ticket at the station. However, there is another local educational establishment which turns out an entirely different type of person: the York School of Compittance Compatence Competulants Competence (YSCom, for short). The aim of this particular institution is, clearly, to turn out wholly pleasant and agreeable graduates specially trained to ensure that we spend vast tracts of our day unscrambling their cluelessness. In a former life, I was a university external examiner, so I am well qualified to pass judgement on our most venerable academic institutions and the types of graduate they churn out. And so it is that I decide to try to collect a prescription by way of testing out the calibre of the YSCom graduates. You’d almost be tempted to think that regular prescriptions are a straightforward matter. You tick a box saying ‘the same next month, please’, and duly return the following month to retrieve said item(s).
YSCom Verdict: Could Try Harder. Happily, the reach of the YSCom extends further afield. Or so I find when I put a call centre to the test. I have a faulty washing machine. It is insured. I pay every month to insure it.
Oh no you don’t. Or not if you visit a certain Pharmacy Which Must Not Be Named (but which is called Shoes, or some such). Here, you delve into your little prescription parcel - only to find that a crucial item is missing. “It’s not a problem”, the very cheerful assistant says. But it is, I think. I also draw her attention to the fact that they have included a prescription which I didn’t order. If only it had been mind-altering drugs, I might have been tempted to keep it. As it was, I don’t suffer from hayfever, so I returned it. YSCom Verdict: First Class Honours I decide to take my prescription to an independent pharmacist which also must not be named, but which you might find if you happen to be walking down Gillygate. Here, I explain about the muddle in the Unnamed Pharmacy. “Oh, that happened to me,” says another lady in the queue. “And me”, pipes up another. It was my own personal #metoo moment, without any of the sexual harassment. The following day, I returned to collect my prescription. It was all present and correct, with nary a hayfever tablet in sight. Very disappointing.
Oh no I don’t. Or maybe I do. They’re not sure. Actually, they’re not sure if I exist at all. Certainly not at my address. And that policy number - the one I’m reading straight off their letter - doesn’t exist either. Except that it might do. They’ll have to ring me back. Needless to say, they don’t ring me back. Once I have fortified myself with several cups of coffee, I try them again. This time the nice girl tells me that I do exist, and so does my insurance policy. Only they’ve registered it all to a different address. I now need to ring Barclays, but as they are the current holders of A* First Class, Summa Cum Laude, Best in Show, World Cup Honours in Competence, I decide I can’t face it and have another cup of coffee instead. YSCom Verdict: A Scraped First Feeling slightly tired of all this external examining, I decide to pay a visit to Style Flooring of York in Heworth for my Farrow and Ball fix. I look at the display. At first sight, it seems quite small. The very pleasing thought crosses my mind that I might have cycled right to the other side of York for no reason at all.
COLUMNIST
Rachel Ragg
“Oh, that’s Number 282. You presumably want Estate Emulsion? I’ll fetch it now for you,” says the gentleman in charge. This is highly disappointing. He needs a further test. “I also need some Downpipe, I mean Dropcloth,” I say (because I, unlike everyone else, am not in the slightest bit incompetent, and never make mistakes of any description). “Which one would you like? We have both. Downpipe is Number 26, and Dropcloth is Number 283. And there’s ten percent off all Farrow paint this month.” This just isn’t good enough. And said gentleman did not improve matters by correctly advising me not to use Dead Flat paint on bookcases when I asked for his opinion. Moreover, I refuse to be bribed by a couple of free carpet samples to kneel on while weeding the garden. Has nobody ever told him that bribery and corruption are almost as bad as plagiarism in University circles - never mind having knowledge and being able to apply it? YSCom Verdict: Catastrophic Fail. Don’t even think about resitting.
“I don’t suppose you have any Shadow White wall paint?” I say hopefully.

Want to know more? Go to www.yourlocallink.co.uk to read extended versions of this month’s horoscopes!
Horoscopes 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL Gentlemen of the sign should enjoy some well-deserved success and hit targets they’ve been aiming at for many months – maybe even years! The 6th through ‘til the 10th is a bright time for professional celebration, and there is almost certainly going to be an element of travel associated with jobs or business during this period. Ladies of the sign have a more moody time of things as they try to unravel a mixed up melange of divided loyalties, with some ongoing battles between their heads and their hearts. Older women may also be struggling with something of an identity crisis, trying to
LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG
A truly lovely month for younger members of the sign when it comes to finding new love and romance, and this is especially true for people suffering with broken hearts and shattered dreams. For older Leos the romantic energy is also strong and there will be talk of engagements and weddings. Some new energy on the job scene between the 10th and 21st.
VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
July is a ‘nose to the grindstone’ month! You’re going to be as busy as hell, probably burning the candle at both ends, and maybe by the end of the month suffering a bit from sleep deprivation. Nevertheless, this sustained effort brings in revenue, which enables you to take a couple of steps forward towards your long-term aims and ambitions – so it’s got to be worth it!

make contact with the girls they once were and shrugging off the shrouds of the matrons they have become. Cancerian females in their teens are likely to make some mistakes and major errors of judgement at this time. All Cancerians should take note of the fact that this is not a good time for taking chances and going with hunches and gut feelings. It’s time for some practical and pragmatic common sense to prevail.
LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT
A gentle and romantic month in which you may find yourself making long term commitments – and long may they last! Current affairs of the heart counterbalance some aspects of your emotional history! Older males of the sign may find themselves contemplating new professional directions, while females are also blessed with new job opportunities.
SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV Sorry, but this could be quite a testing month. Older males with dodgy hearts should not take up dangerous sports; if you’re in the business of buying and selling make sure you sell before you buy; and if you’ve got some bloody awkward decisions to make, don’t bother listening to the advice of other people. They’re your decisions so you’ve got to make ‘em!

CANCER
A STROLOGIST
Before you start getting depressed about what you have not achieved, just look back over this year and see what you have achieved! The plusses outweigh the minuses 5-to-1; and if you can’t see it, well, other people can. And, as such, they’re not likely to be overly sympathetic towards your dissatisfaction and complaints. 22ND DEC
CAPRICORN - 19TH JAN
A busy, and possibly quite fraught, period on the work scene – but don’t panic! Help is at hand from a man in some position of power and authority, who brings reassurance and promises of better times to come. Nevertheless, it might be an interesting exercise to explore other career options at this time… you know… just in case!
AQUARIUS
20TH JAN - 18TH FEB
It looks like there could be some new acquisition in July… house, car, promotion etc., any of which should make this a memorable month! There will also be some very good news on the job scene, either on the 3rd or the 10th – or both! Gentlemen of the sign might feel a bit held back by their spouses; in which case, guys, you know what you’ve gotta do!
PISCES
19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
An argument with a friend or colleague of the same sex might leave a nasty taste in your mouth, but it makes you even more determined to stand up for your rights. They say that pride comes before a fall, but at this time you need to allow your pride to be your guide, and have faith in an
attractive member of the opposite sex who is definitely on your side!
ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR
Someone who has been opposing you and holding you back now gets out of the way and doors that you thought were permanently closed start creaking open. This has to be a good thing, but it does put you in a quandary. What do you do now and where do you go from here? If I were you, I’d follow the money!

A very positive month for patching up old arguments (especially in emotional relationships) and for finding some common ground of compromise and co-operation. FOUR OUT OF SEVEN AIN'T BAD I recently read that Gwyneth Paltrow only sees her husband four days a week. In the long list of edgy and sometimes infuriating stuff she comes out with, this one’s tame. Our Gwyneth has previously come out with some right stuff. Like, for example, that time her lifestyle website suggested inserting a jade stone somewhere private to help ‘create kidney strength’ and ‘tighten and tone’. It was quickly put down by doctors and gynaecologists, but fair play to the lass, she’s open minded. And

while I might not be first in the queue to buy a jade vagina stone, I quite liked her reasoning for the four-days-a-weekhusband schedule. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Gwyneth shared that she doesn’t live with her husband and only sees him four days a week at her New York pad in order to keep things fresh and encourage ‘polarity’. I’ll have to google ‘polarity’ in a minute. But I’m sure it’s a fantastic edgy concept and for once, I think I agree with Ms Paltrow. My boyfriend and I also see each other four days a week. It’s not actually out of choice. We both work different shifts and are currently living with our respective parents while we save up for a home deposit. But I’d be lying if I said I haven't noticed that the four -days-a-week thing has actually been a blessing in disguise.

It’s not something I’ve been shouting from the rooftops: ‘I enjoy seeing the love of my life for just four days a week!’ In truth I’ve been hesitant to admit it because it might put the authenticity of my relationship into question. I’ll state for the record that my relationship is authentic and great, but the alone time has been really, really good for me. When we saw each other every day, separation anxiety soon became a thing. If my boyfriend was away or busy I’d get nervous and stressed. Without my own personal routine to fall back onto, I was left floating around aimlessly until he came back. It created a lot of tension and rows. I won’t beat around the bush, I was needy. Nowadays I spend a few nights a week alone. There’s something grounding about having time to sit and pick my nose in the privacy of my own room. I watch all the cheesy rom-com stuff my boyfriend doesn’t like whilst devouring a smelly cheese based dish that would turn his stomach. I go to the gym, send him a couple of memes and

catch a good night’s sleep. I’m confident he enjoys his uninterrupted gaming nights, too. The days we spend together are precious. I look forward to boyfriend time. It feels like we’ve recreated a honeymoon phase, without the agro of wondering ‘what are we?’ When it comes to moving in, a spare room has become our number one priority. A few nights a week I’m going to sprawl out on the sofa watching rom-coms while my partner in crime shouts at teenagers on his Playstation from the spare room - that’s my boy. It's going to be pure bliss. So if you want the recipe for a happy life, I’d hit Gwyneth Paltrow up. She’s the woman for the job and she’s got it down. Just don’t go buying any jade vagina stones any time soon. *I’d like to half-heartedly apologise in advance to anyone who finds the medical term ‘Vagina’ offensive. If you feel it’s not required I’ll leave that up to you…as always!*

AFTERNOON TEA BY HUDSONS
HOT Afternoon tea began in 1840, when a hungry duchess simply couldn’t wait until her next meal. It’s evolved into a popular weekend activity and we’re pretty spoilt for choice here in York. Hudsons, the 3AA Rosette restaurant in The Grand, York, has turned afternoon tea into more than just a midday snack. It’s an experience. Check out my review online: www.yourlocallink. co.uk and get yourself booked in!

I hope with all of my heart that by the time this magazine is published we have seen some sunshine. Cut short gardening plans, frizzy hair and feeling grumpy are all symptoms of this endless drizzle. At the time of writing, I’m staring miserably out of the window wondering if now is the right time to pop out for lunch. It’s not.

CHERNOBYL HBO’s drama on the nuclear disaster was well written and had great actors in. Having read some of the statistics, I can’t help but feel that Hollywood did too good of a job bringing the story to life... the reason Chernobyl was such a harrowing story wasn’t because it was a nuclear disaster: it was because of the conspiracies that surrounded what went wrong and the nasty efforts officials went to in order to cover it up.

WALKING WITH THE
6
+
Miles
This walk links three attractive villages, the two Askhams (Bryan and Richard) and Bilbrough. There are two length options. The full circular walk is just over six miles. The shorter version of four and a half miles, covering all three villages and the attractive countryside between, ends with a quick hop back to the start on a regular bus.
1 Walk north on Manor Heath to the A64 slip road and roundabout to take the road signposted Askham Bryan. Pass Askham Bryan College Equestrian Centre on the left with views to the Minster on the right. When the pavement ends cross the road and continue on the other side for 200 yards until a road on the left signposted Bilbrough and Askham Richard. Walk down this for 200 yards (there is no pavement) and opposite a green metal gate, turn right onto tree-lined Chapel Lane. Continue on this quiet lane to Askham Bryan. 2 At the T junction in the village turn left along Main
Street passing the Nags Head. Continue to pass the new Monastery of Poor Clare’s (relocated from Lawrence Street) and where the road turns right keep straight on down a track signposted to Askham Richard. There is a handy bench at this point. In about 250 yards you go through a metal gate, then straight on along the edge of the field. At the corner climb over the stile and follow the path left alongside the field with a small wood on the left.
3 At the field end cross a track to a stile into pasture where there may be cattle grazing. Initially follow the hedge on your right but about two thirds of the way along go half left aiming for the corner of the wooded area. At the corner cross the plank bridge and turn sharp right to a stile near the field corner. Cross the
double stile and continue between fence and hedgerow to cross a further stile and emerge in Askham Richard by the green where there are lots of benches.
4 Leaving the village go down Mill Lane on the far side of the pond between farm buildings (not the busier road leading towards Rufforth). Follow this very quiet hedge-lined lane until the edge of a small wood on the left. Here cut through left on a ten yard track to join a busier road. Turn back left here, watching out for traffic, until opposite Askham Fields Farm. 5 Turn right here by a large tree following the obvious track as it bends right and left, then going between hedges and gradually climbing. At the top of the hill there is a viewpoint with another well-placed seat beneath some fine beech trees. Continue on the hedged track with gardens on the right to reach a road. 6 Turn right and follow the road as it bends left. Ignore the first turning on the right but take the next (Main Street) opposite Bilbrough village hall. Continue up the street to Bilbrough church, passing the Three Hares pub. Take the public footpath just before the church passing through the churchyard and by the derelict Wesleyan Chapel to go through the squeeze stile into a grassed area. Follow the path passing a pond on your right and keeping right at a fork, towards the edge of a wood with Bilbrough Manor visible behind you. Go through a gap in the hedgerow and turn right to a field corner alongside the wood.
From simply stylish, luxurious elegance to cool contemporary, we have beautiful bathroom and tile collections for all styles and budgets on display.
Refreshments There are pubs in each of the three villages. There are also refreshment opportunities at Bilbrough Top services and a café at the petrol station near the Street Houses bus stop for those returning by bus. Several seats en-route are handy for a snack.
What to see The three villages, especially the green and pond at Askham Richard and the varied buildings lining the main streets of Askham Bryan and Bilbrough. Bilbrough church contains the tomb of Parliamentary Civil War leader Thomas Lord Fairfax. The countryside between the three villages is quiet and unspoilt with hedge and tree-lined lanes. Wildlife spotted included deer, buzzards, treecreeper and numerous woodland flowers – there’s a good display of bluebells in the wood beyond Bilbrough Manor in spring.

Time Travel
Come with us as we journey backwards through the mists of time. No pushing at the back.
THIS MONTH: BUT WHY?? We’ve all had a conversation with a child in which every statement you give is responded to with “but why?” As annoying as it can be, kids are great at getting to the bones of every issue, which is what this issue’s Time Travel article is all about. Our question is ‘why York?’ Why is there a city here at all, and why did the Romans pick this exact spot? Come on… First, it would be extremely silly to suggest that all British history started with the Roman conquest in 43 CE. Check your DNA and most of us will discover that our ancestors have called these Britannic shores home for several thousands of years. However, although there have been Bronze, Iron and Stone age archaeological finds dotted around the city, it’s fair to say that the Romans were the first to establish a permanent settlement here. But why here?
BUST UP For decades prior to the Roman invasion, those clever Imperials were trading and dealing with the inhabitants of Britannia. It simply wasn’t the Roman way to just impulsively invade a new land without first making the task as easy as possible. Local tribes were paid handsomely to become client Kingdoms of Rome, there to assist with trade deals and diplomacy and helping the Empire get a foothold on the island. One such tribe were the Brigantes. Based around what is now the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales, the Brigantes were initially accepting of Rome and helped with the main invasion. However, after a leadership change within the Kingdom, the Brigantes became a massive thorn in the Empire’s bottom, clashing with the legions and raiding Roman towns (and giving us the term ‘brigand’). The decision was therefore made for the Roman army to push further north and establish a major fort that would be

near to both Brigantian territory, and the lands held by the Parisi tribe in what is now East Yorkshire and Humberside (and if their name is familiar, it’s because relatives of theirs established a famous city in France).
A GOOD SPOT The location chosen in 71 CE to build what is now our home city exemplifies Roman tactical genius. As well as being on the boundary between the two tribes’ lands, two navigable rivers meet here at quite a tight angle. This means that any fort established between the
Bespoke Design Manufacture Instal ation
rivers would be protected on two sides of a triangle. The largest of those rivers, the Ouse, allowed boat access from the North Sea, despite being 40 miles inland. This would help with troop movements and allow the fortress to receive goods from across the Empire. Road access was also very good thanks to the ridge of high land on which the Roman’s built their approaching road – these days called the A64. That ridge made the road difficult to ambush – a popular tactic amongst the Celts. The fort itself, later named Eboracum (possibly due to the abundance of yew trees in the area), was established on the flat lands between the rivers, with the northern defences (today the city walls along Gillygate and Lord Mayor’s Walk) offering a clear and uninterrupted

HOWEVER… Despite how perfect all this sounds, the Romans did have to put up with problems. Firstly, as we all know, the rivers in York are prone to flooding – something that blighted the Romans as much as it does residents today. In fact, following the Roman departure from York in 410 CE, the main bridge over the river lasted only 40 years before being washed away by a flood. Also, much of the land around the fort was marshy, limiting what could be done outside of the fortress walls. Although the Normans would use these marshes to their defensive advantage almost exactly 1000 years later, for the Romans it was a problem. Had the army’s planners made a slightly different decision, York today would look quite different. The option existed to place the fortress on the highest

ground in the area, around where today The Retreat sits on Lamel Hill, off Heslington Lane. That land had been used for millennia as burial ground and an important thoroughfare and building the fortress there would have solved the marsh issue and made Eboracum more imposing. HOME But the decision was made to build it here, and here we are today. It’s interesting to think that choices made almost 2000 years ago are still influencing how we live, from the roads we use to drive into the city, to the cost of our insurance premiums due to flooding. Still, we think those choices were pretty good.

Local FOOTBALL “I thought the football season was finished”, my wife bemoaned as I tuned in to see the penalty shootout of the Nations League 3rd/4th place play-off match between England and Switzerland. To be fair she had a point, and as much as I love football, I don’t think anyone has ever got excited about a 3rd/4th place game in any tournament, let alone one that has been made up to stop meaningless international friendlies. I had to chuckle at England getting a goal chalked off for VAR in the semi-final against Holland just after absolute scenes and people celebrating like it was 1966 – only to then say after losing that it wasn’t a proper competition. Some even
Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence. claimed the performance was so poor that they switched over to watch Love Island. During the Holland game there were several VAR checks, which completely spoilt the game for me. I have no problem with each team having one referral or something like that, but when a linesman keeps his flag down despite a player being three yards offside because ‘VAR will check it’, seems bonkers. I also think we’ll get to a stage where players won’t celebrate a goal as they know they’ll have a twominute wait to see if it’s an actual goal. Having said all that, VAR could have saved a job for Gareth Southgate to confirm that England can’t play out from the back. At time of writing, the Nations League is the only competition that has fully finished for me to comment on, as the Women’s Football World Cup and the Cricket

World Cup have both just started. It’s fantastic to see so many people being patriotic in their support of England, and any team that plays Australia. Speaking of cricket – it’s great to see Yorkshire have a good start to the season. Currently 3rd in the Championship table ahead of their game against Warwickshire at York CCC in June.
BOXING Onto boxing now and the sporting world was shocked to see Anthony Joshua stopped in his tracks by a man who, with all due respect, had people commenting that he looked like he had prepared for the bout by eating a kebab after each sparring session. However, Andy Ruiz Jr proved aesthetics mean nothing in boxing as he beat up a man who in comparison is a supreme athlete and the peak of physical fitness. He has given hope to us all! I had to laugh at Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, who said: “Full credit to Andy Ruiz, he deserves the rematch” – I’m sure he does Eddie, given the fact he won the

From that logic I’ve decided that I’m more than happy to have this column sponsored by The Parvin restaurant in Haxby. Jokes aside, things are looking good again for boxing locally. York RI is hosting the city’s first professional show of the year in late June, as featured in last month’s Your Local Link (full report in next month’s edition), and York’s rising star light heavyweight Michael Fafera bids to stretch his record to 5-0 when he fights at Elland Road on July 13th.

DRIVE TIME Going into town is a pretty normal and straight-forward task. We can either get in the car and go directly to the centre; head to the nearest Park and Ride to avoid the pricy parking charges; or forget the car and just bus, bike or walk it. Easy. Right? As it happens, accessibility and mobility issues affect many residents in our lovely city – and so it’s important that these people receive the relevant support. In case you didn’t know what sort of help is out there, we’ve put everything into one handy little list.
DIAL & RIDE
This flexible door-to-door bus service can either get you into the city centre, Vanguard, or to the major supermarkets. The vehicles are fully equipped to aid those that may struggle with walking, and for wheelchair users; and visually impaired pass holders travel for free. n To book a journey with Dial & Ride, or to find out more about how they could help you, visit www.yorkwheels.org.uk or call 551441.
SHOPMOBILITY
This one’s for support once you’re in the city centre. Shopmobility, based on the second floor of Piccadilly car park, assist those that may struggle to navigate their way around on foot through the hire of a scooter or wheelchair. If you think Shopmobility could help you, then call 679222.
TOY BOX SCRABBLE STRING LIGHT Everyone loves a good light box. Everyone loves a game of Scrabble. And everyone loves bunting. Put those three things together and you get this absolute must-have accessory. n £11.99 from www.thegiftandgadgetstore.com
HENRY MICROFIBRE SCREEN CLEANER We don’t really have a lot to say about this, except: Henry the Vacuum. Screen cleaner. That is all. Who wouldn’t want a teeny tiny Henry to clean their smartphone? n £5.99 from www.thegiftandgadgetstore.com
YORK WHEELS
This voluntary organisation is there to assist anyone that can’t easily access public transport. If you’re over 60, have a disability, or receive benefits, then York Wheels could help you. Using the volunteers’ own cars, they’re able to take you wherever you need to be – whether that’s the hairdressers, on holiday, or to see friends. To find out more, visit www.yorkwheels.org.uk or call 630080. n If you’re interested in finding out more about travel in and around York, be sure to check out www.itravelyork.info.
KICKSTART THIS... CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF COMPLIMENTS Trust us – if you have one of these in your house then you will be ‘showered’ with compliments. This is literally a cloud. For your home. You can own a cloud. Made of hypoallergenic polyester fibre, this stunning ‘lamp’ levitates through the power of magnets, and creates an atmosphere like nothing else. Re-enact a thunderstorm on your desk. Light up the sky with a multi-
coloured cumulus. Bring a fluffy ball of art into your living room. There are officially no more ways to describe this immaculate light source. Back it today.

SHARPEN YOUR SKILLS TO US! That’s right – Your Local Link magazine turns 16 this month. We’re over the moon to have received your support for all those years, and hopefully you’ve enjoyed reading about the ins and outs of York. To celebrate, we’ve put together a ‘Best of Your Local Link’ timeline – with our favourite moments throughout the years. You’re welcome. 2003 Back when Your Local Link began, we had a little strip at the bottom of each page with inspirational little poems that stated why our magazine was so useful. Here are a few: • “Don’t reach for the brandy – just keep the Link handy” • “Need something sensational – the Link’s educational” 2005 We got our first office pet in 2005: Suzie the cat . 2006 This year saw the arrival of our first ever website: Your Local Web Link. 2009 We trialled a square-shaped magazine. That’s right, Your Local Link was a square. A square. SQUARE. It didn’t catch on. 2010 Your Local Link began to look like the magazine we know and love now,
with its large image on the front cover and a thorough contents page. 2012 The branching out didn’t stop – we launched a blog on our website! The kind of content you could find there included pictures of Head of Sales, Mim, outside in the snow wearing a bikini over her clothes. Yeah. 2013 The big one – our tenth birthday! 2015 This year saw the short-lived feature, ‘What we’ve learnt this issue’, where members of our team shared fascinating, and somewhat embarrassing, learnings. One of these was the revelation that one of our Office Assistants thought the A64 was a mythical place known as ‘Aysixtyfour’. The mind boggles. 2017 November 2017 saw us hit a whopping 90,000 doorsteps! 2019 We hit over 10,000 followers across our Facebook and Twitter accounts!
So there we have it – a brief summary of our 16 glorious years. Make sure you follow us online as we look forward to many more years as York’s most read publication.

Generally speaking, there are two main groups of people when it comes to money; the overly cautious, and the overly relaxed. The former are likely to hold back from doing things they want from life. The ‘what if’s’ and Julie Wilson, straight talking unpredictabilities of life can deter these people Yorkshire financial planner from treating themselves and improving their lifestyle. “I’d love a new kitchen, and I’ve seen the car that would be perfect for me. But I know I need to save for retirement and need to make it last. It’s not worth the risk”. And the latter - carefree, ‘enjoy life in the moment because you only live once’ type of people. “I might as well buy the things I want now, and enjoy life while I can. You never know when your last day will be, so why not enjoy it?”. Some people have traits of both. Whichever group you feel you fall into (if any), this is normal human behaviour. And I’m not saying either are necessarily wrong. But have you ever thought about actually finding out the amount you’ll need to live comfortably - doing the things you want AND not running out of money? How much is enough for you? We are a Yorkshire-bred Chartered Financial Planning Firm. We know Yorkshire folks’ attitude towards money because we are Yorkshire folk. And we use our heritage and 30 + years of experience to guide our clients towards improving their lives - by using heavily researched investment planning and your own personal life goals. We don’t just measure growth, we measure quality of life and we are results driven. We want our clients to achieve what they want – quitting that job, having that trip, buying that house, driving that car. That’s what makes us feel like we’re making a difference to people – not just having more money. Most of our clients already have that… We want to give them more. We offer this FREE book which delves into the world of what to think about when finding out the amount you’ll need to live the life you want. We give these away to help get you started on the right path because we know it’s hard to take action when it’s so easy to sit idle. Once you’ve requested and read this book, and have seriously thought about what you want out of your life (‘seriously’ means writing it down!), then you’re ready to start taking the concept of financial and lifestyle planning seriously. That’s when YOU need to pick up the phone and speak to a professional. Sadly, we can’t do that bit for you…

BARGAIN HUNTING Meeting and exceeding the expectations of our customers is one of the cornerstones of what we do at Herbert Todd’s. And our five star reviews on Trustpilot, Google and Facebook are testament to the fact that it’s not just lip service when we say we want to be the best in the industry at customer service. However when the economy is a little sluggish, as it is currently, we do find that some of our online retail friends get a bit twitchy and start liquidating stock at very low prices. ‘Great’, I hear you cry. And yes I have to agree; as a proud Yorkshireman I love to hunt around for the best price I can find – and getting the product you want at a lower cost can only be a good thing. But the big question people ask us as a company with reasonably large showrooms and a desire to look after our customers is: How can we match the prices of those large online boxshifting retailers? How can we afford to pay for so many fabulous staff members to provide a great retail experience if our prices are so low? Fortunately for us the answer has
ASK THE EXPERT MATT TODD
become more and more obvious to our suppliers as the list of failed stores has increased. Manufacturers have finally realised they need great retail spaces to enthuse potential customers about their products. Commodity products will sell fine online but for anything a bit better shoppers want to get in front of the products to understand why they are better – and ultimately make the right buying decision. As a result of this revelation, we’re working ever closer with our suppliers so that not only can we provide the best customer service and great showrooms to browse, but also a price match promise so that you get the best deal possible. We can now price match other responsible retailer prices in all categories of electrical products – so whether you need a range cooker, American fridge freezer, washing machine or dishwasher, you know you won’t find it cheaper elsewhere.
n Next time you need an appliance, please challenge my team to get you the best deal at the best price – and still with service!

York Burton Lane Club on Bootham Crescent in York is now open after a £34,000 revamp and it looks totally different.
The refurbishment took around four months to complete and has seen the bar area open up to create more space for visitors. A big separating wall has been removed and the bar has moved backwards. Design-wise there’s been brand new carpets fitted, structural improvements, new chairs and a fresh colour scheme using trendy greys and neutrals.
Everyone is welcome at Burton Lane Club, and there’s plenty to enjoy for those who enter. If you fancy a game of pool or darts, want to catch the football or just enjoy a quiet pint – all of this is on offer. With decent prices such as £3.20 for a pint of Carling, and some Sam Smiths pints available for as low as £2.40, we don’t think potential visitors will need much persuading, but there are also regular quiz nights and music on, too.

lookout for new members. Please enquire with Dave or Tony in the club if you would like to join.
Club Steward Tony Franks and Club Secretary Dave Beavers have done much of the work with their own hands, so that more cash could be spent on improvements. They admit it’s been hard work!
Burton Lane Club, 74 Bootham Crescent, York, is open MondayThursday from 5pm-12am, Friday from 4pm – 12am and Saturday-Sunday 12pm-12am. Why not pop down and check it out?
The improvements came after Dave and Tony decided that they needed to take action before York City Football Club leaves Bootham Crescent. They’ve completely modernised the whole bar area to give the people of York a decent place

Home styling How do I best present my home for sale? This is a great question and one that comes up frequently when I go to appraise a house for potential sale.

Sometimes vendors tell me that they’re not really motivated to clear the clutter and want to sell the house ‘as is’ because they assume that “people can see through the clutter”. Other vendors are keen to present their homes in a similar way to a new build show home.
So what is the right approach? It depends which end of the market you're targeting your property towards. If you have a 'fixer upper' and aim to sell your home to someone who's going to come in and strip the place, fully refurbish or re-model the house, then you don't need to stage your home to look like a show home, as this would confuse buyers. Instead, you need to work with your agent to price it accordingly for a quicker sale, targeting those who want to take on a project. If you get this right, you can achieve a very quick sale and often achieve over the asking price, as there are lots of people competing for property ‘opportunities’, which push up the price. But only once they've been attracted to come and see it. On the other hand, if you want to achieve the maximum price, you need to make your property look attractive to a broad spectrum of potential buyers, and clearing away clutter, tidying up worn decor, depersonalising the house and making it look as close to a show home as possible will be the answer. According to Rightmove reasearch, properly dressed homes often sell for up to 8% more than a similar poorly presented property. Why else would new house builders spend so much time making show homes look so attractive? So where is the problem? Well, some sellers want to achieve maximum price but fail to see the flaws in the way their home appears. They don't want to make changes, but still expect a high price. And they think buyers can see through the clutter, but in my experience most people think they can but actually they can't, and clutter sends them running for the hills! This is often why some homes stay on the market for so long without selling. If you find yourself struggling to sell, have a critical review of your home and the way it might be presented to potential buyers and listen to the advice your agent will give you. For an independent view, enlist the help of a home staging firm. DO target your home at either the developer end or the premium end of the market for maximum success and prepare it accordingly. DON'T try to sell a poorly presented house for the same price as a similar neighboring property that has been 'dressed' for sale. The UK’s No.1 Agent Since July 2015

Whether you’re relaxing in the shade, dining al fresco with friends and family or watching the sun set with a refreshing drink – there’s no better place than enjoying the summer months in your garden. Warm, sun-filled days and balmy evenings tempt us to venture outside, and doing so boosts our mood. Creating social spaces within your garden opens up opportunities to entertain, socialise and play, from having a delicious barbecue, enjoying the sun or just simply relaxing with family and friends. With the right planning your garden can become an extension of your home by creating a colourful, vibrant outdoor area for entertaining – or even a place of escape to relax and unwind. Choosing comfortable garden furniture can help you relax and entertain in style, whether you choose a dining set for al fresco dining or recliners for relaxing with a good book. Plants can help bring us closer to nature, as well as improve our mood and aid to help relieve depression. Looking out onto a garden can provide us with a dose of ‘green therapy’ and help improve mental health. The feeling of enjoyment and wellbeing from simply being outdoors comes from a boost of what have been dubbed ‘outdoorphins’, which are similar to the endorphins that your body produces during exercise that raises the spirits. Scientists
also call this ‘biophilia’, which is an in-built need for us to connect with nature and has demonstrated how gardening can help us satisfy this need. It’s known that both house plants and garden plants help absorb pollutants from the air, and that dense hedging can reduce noises from roads and our general surroundings. With this in mind it can be beneficial to plant shrubs, trees, climbers and hedges around our homes, which can provide shelter from the sun and wind. This, in turn, can help reduce heating and cooling costs and produce a more comfortable place to sit outside and enjoy summer – with the added bonus of

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?
Our lovely Tony invites you all to see his very own nursery as part of the National Open Garden Scheme – a programme that grants members of the public access to over 3,500 stunning private gardens to raise money for charity. The Nursery, Tony’s own garden, will be open on 14th July from 1-5pm and 17th July from 2-7pm – or by arrangement if you can’t make those dates. You can expect to find over 100 fruit trees and many different vegetables – plus much more. And it’s not just The Nursery that will be opening its doors to the public – Havoc Hall, Cawood Gardens and The Priory to name a few will also be taking part in the scheme. n If you’d like to take part and explore a garden or two near you, visit www.ngs.org.uk for more information.
(GOOSEBERRY) FOOLS RUSH IN Gooseberries are probably the most unappreciated of all the summer berries. All too often they’re seen as hard and green, tart to taste and, if they must be eaten at all, fit only to be thrown in a pie or squished for a fool. There’s no denying that some gooseberry varieties are very much ‘culinary’, especially many of the green-skinned types that never really sweeten. There are though, lots of other varieties that make excellent fresh eating. These are the dessert berries, mainly yellow- or red-skinned, that can be eaten without any cooking.
WHAT’S IN A NAME? Some dessert gooseberry varieties have been around for a long time. Many date back to the nineteenth century or earlier. These often have intriguing names: Crown Bob, Dan’s Mistake, Early Sulphur, Leveller, Hedgehog and Whinham’s Industry are just some that I’ve grown. Other dessert berries are of more recent introduction. These often originate from outside the UK and are more exotically named.
I now grow these types, especially the varieties Hinnonmäki Red, Pax and Rokula. About 15 years ago I had to discard traditional varieties as they were repeatedly afflicted with American gooseberry mildew, a disease from across the Atlantic now widespread in the UK. As well as mildewing the leaves and stunting growth, this coats berries with a brown powder rendering them unappetising – especially for fresh eating. Nearly all the traditional varieties, culinary and dessert, are highly susceptible to this new mildew. Fortunately many newer varieties including Hinnonmäki, Pax and Rokula have been bred for mildew resistance. This is why I now grow these. So far none have shown any trace of the disease.
BERRY NICE All three varieties ripen to a deep maroon red. The key to getting them sweet is to let the berries hang on the bush, to almost cook in the sun. A ripe berry is nearly translucent, has a gooseberry ‘perfume’ and is soft to a gentle squeeze. Usually it takes until mid-July to reach such perfection.
EXPERT
Tony Chalcraft Although most of my gooseberries are now modern desserts I do also have a culinary variety. This is Invicta, again a newish mildew-resistant type. Whether a cooking variety is really needed, I’m not sure. The dessert types crop prolifically, so much so that I often remove some of the berries when still under-ripe. This is to give those left space to fatten. The thinned berries, although small and immature, are perfectly suitable for cooking. In effect therefore the dessert berries are ‘dual purpose’: early under-ripe berries for cooking, later ripe ones for fresh eating. Dessert gooseberries are an under-sung and neglected fruit worthy of a place in any garden. If you’d like to give them a go do play safe and grow mildew resistant types. Don’t be tempted to buy and plant until winter however. Summer is the time to eat fruit, winter the time to get it in the ground. While you wait, if you can find any really ripe dessert berries in the shops do give them a try. Eaten when really ripe the taste is up there with the best of the soft fruit, on a par with the strawberry or raspberry and with far more tang than the often bland, and harder to grow, blueberry.

G O T A GA R D E N I N G QUESTION? Ask CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk or call Chris on 766266. larvae then feed for about a month before I’VE JUST SPOTTED A FEW RED going to the soil to spin silken cocoons BEETLES ON MY NEW LILY PLANTS – SHOULD I BE WORRIED? in which they pupate. There’s normally I get asked frequently about this pest in the nursery. This insect is visible from late March and does a lot of damage to lilies throughout the summer – hence it’s known as the lily beetle. The beetles are conspicuous – adults are bright red, and grow up to 8mm long, while larvae are reddish-yellow and hump backed, and covered in black slime. Lily beetles feed on leaves, stems and seed pods of lilies, and both adults and larvae feed voraciously from April onwards – and cause considerable damage when conditions favour them. Madonna lilies are particularly susceptible. Adult beetles overwinter in soil and move up onto lilies and other host plants from late March onwards. Over several months, each female lays 200-300 eggs on leaves and stems, and larvae hatch about ten days after eggs are laid. The
only one adult generation each year, but overwintering adults continue to emerge from the soil up until June, so adults, larvae and pupae may all be present throughout late spring and summer. Keep a close watch on susceptible plants from April onwards, and remove and destroy and beetles, eggs or larvae that appear. If necessary, apply a contact insecticide as soon as beetles, eggs or larvae are seen in spring, and repeat if infestations persist.
I HAVE A SPIRAEA BRIDAL WREATH. PLEASE COULD YOU ADVISE ME AS THE BEST TIME TO PRUNE? IT DIDN’T FLOWER VERY WELL THIS SPRING! Spiraeas are small- to medium-sized, hardy, deciduous or semi-evergreen
shrubs. Some sucker freely with attractive flowers; and on some cultivars, foliage. Some spiraeas are large and arching in habit, flowering on either old or new growth; while others are small and twiggy, flowering on the current seasons shoots. Regular pruning, to which all respond well, maintains flowering performance. Timing depends on whether the species flower on new or old wood. Spirarea Arguta, also known as Bridal Wreath, is a medium-sized shrub with clusters of small, white flowers from mid-to-late spring on the previous season’s growth. Prune to prevent an accumulation of old, dead wood, and to encourage the production of new stems that will flower the following year. Prune in early summer, just after flowering. On young plants, cut back flowered stems to strong buds and remove any weak growth entirely. Once

established, thin growth by cutting back to ground level, one in four of the older stems. Then remove any weak growth and shorten the flowered stems by up to half, cutting back to strong shoots. Spiraea japonica are small shrubs with small heads of usually pink flowers that shoot in summer. There are many cultivars, such as Goldflame, with attractive young leaves. Annual pruning keeps plants free-flowering with fresh young foliage. Prune in early spring, and dead head after flowering. On planting, cut out all weak and old wood. Prune back remaining stems to leave a framework 4-6” high, and prune to one or two buds of this every year. Dwarf cultivars need only to be clipped over to shape after flowering.

SPIKE This gorgeous collie-sized boy arrived in York after being rescued from Romania, and is very intelligent. He gets on well with the other dogs and cats in his current foster home, and would do well in a home with other dogs that are sociable and can show him the ropes. This loyal and loveable boy would make the perfect companion to an experienced dog owner. n Visit www.rags-2-riches.co.uk
SHADOW Poor Shadow’s not had it easy – while she was very much loved by her previous owners, she shared her home with many other cats and didn’t really enjoy it. She’s not that keen on life in the centre and is a bit scared, so she’s desperate for someone to come and rescue her!

YOUR FAMILY
Whether you’re a new parent about to head back to work, or you’re looking to change your little one’s nursery, now is the time to grab a place for your child’s day care. And with so many brilliant options across York, picking the right nursery for you and your baby can sometimes be a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. So, to try and help make things a little easier, we’ve put together a guide to help you decide. Hey, we’re poets and we didn’t know it. 1. Location This might sound like an obvious one, but there are lots of things to consider when it comes to the location of your child’s nursery. How long will it take you
to get there, and back? Will there likely be traffic? If there are likely to be other people dropping your child off or picking them up then how easy is it for them to get there? 2. Dietary Requirements Your little ones will need feeding while they’re having fun with their new friends. But do they have any dietary requirements? If you’re choosing to feed your son or daughter on a specific diet, or have preferences as to what they do and don’t eat, then this is something to consider. 3. Reviews If you’re in the market for a new computer or car, you’ll probably check the prospective models’ reviews before
you buy. The same thing applies to choosing a nursery – and you’re spoilt for choice with a combination of parent reviews and Ofsted ratings. 4. First Impressions Sometimes, first impressions really do count. You might ‘just know’ that you’ve found the perfect wedding dress. You could view a house that ticks all the boxes and nothing else compares. You’ll naturally only want the best for your child – so check out the nursery for yourself make sure it’s ‘the one’.
SET UP CAMP
For parents on the lookout for a super fun family weekend of camping, look no further. The Beetle Bank Farm camping weekend returns this year after its previous success in 2018. Guests can expect free run of the farm, all you can eat hog roasts and buffets, a rodeo bull, disco night and plenty of children’s entertainment to top it all off. The kids will be as happy as a pig in mud. We’ve been privy to a little bit of insider
44
information, as one of our team went with his wife, Donna, last year. Here’s what she made of it: "We stayed from Friday the 17th to Sunday the 19th of August and it was our girls (aged 4 and 5) first camping experience, which was most definitely a hard one to top. It was non-stop fun from Friday to Sunday. We had full use of the farm on both days and in the evenings there was live entertainment for both children and adults. The all you can eat BBQ was brilliant
too, with plenty of choice and included dessert! Everywhere was very well kept and the toilets and sinks were always immaculately clean and tidy.
5. Policies There are lots of little things to consider here: opening and closing times; how they deal with emergencies; how flexible they are; sickness policies, and the list goes on. Starting nursery is a nerve-wracking yet exciting time for both parent and child, and begins a new chapter in your lives – and here at Your Local Link we wish you all the best!
A great weekend was had by all, and we have already reserved our plot again for this year!” n A weekend pitch is £90 at Beetle Bank Farm, Murton. The all-you can eat hog roast and buffet is £20 per adult and just £10 per child. For more information call 488796 or email beetlebankfarm@ gmail.com

Mine, mine, mine… I was never much of a gamer. For Christmas 1991 I asked my parents for a SEGA Mega Drive so I could play Sonic the Hedgehog like all my friends. They were okay with this, until they realised a Mega Drive didn’t have a keyboard. “Of course a computer needs a keyboard, Howard. How else are you supposed to do work on it, such as writing letters of complaint to your local MP or writing letters of complaint to your local newspaper?” I think that’s what was said, anyway. Instead of a games console, I unwrapped a steadfast Commodore Amiga 500 come Christmas morning, which turned out to be far better. Instead of having to save up and buy overpriced early ‘90s games cartridges, I simply took advantage of owning an actual computer and copied the floppy disk games of other friends. In case you were wondering whatever happened to Commodore and the Amiga computer range, it was killed due to piracy in the north Doncaster area.
I DIGRESS… I do, because this column is actually about the very modern gaming phenomenon of Minecraft, into which my children have recently got themselves. To those uniformed few, Minecraft is a game that allows kids to build whatever they want in a blocky, pixelated world, then go on adventures
killing things and other characters. My three eldest love it. They can sit for hours on their tablets, playing, exploring, and if the graphic reports of my newly turned four-year-old son are to be believed, murdering. The eight- and six-year olds report similar things, as well as what they’ve built that day in a world that exists only at their fingertips. “I dug a hole today. It’s full of spiders now. Look.” However, whereas the older two are very capable of separating the digital world from the real, four-year-old Gatsby seems to be having difficulty. He’ll often come running to me to excitedly describe that he was just attacked, “but it’s okay coz I bite it hard in its creeeepy face and it ranned away!” It takes me a few seconds to realise he’s talking about the game.
COLUMNIST To be fair to the wee tyke, he is a builder. Give him a heap of LEGO and he’ll create something truly imaginative, from an “aeroplane what goes wheelie, wheelie quickly”, to a “tall, tall tower for fighting the moon”. It’s just that he’s also tapped.
CROSS He also likes to show me what he’s built, and I have to say I’m often very impressed. And disturbed. Towering obelisks of stone and wood rise above a ground ploughed clean of grass and green. Monstrous archways spanning tempestuous rivers. Dark, seemingly bottomless voids, around which lay a scattering of bones. And crucifixes. So many crucifixes. Despite having never had the cultural relevance of that shape explained to him, he digs holes and erects buildings that would make the Pope proud.
I dug a hole today. It’s full of spiders now. ALL THE STUFF I’d be okay with all this Minecraft interest if it stayed solely within the screens of the kids’ tablets. Unfortunately, all three are very adept with YouTube and will search out Minecraft related content, often that

we all must watch on the TV. I can’t tell you how painful it is to have to watch a teenage American gaming YouTuber nasally narrate themselves mining and crafting and killing. “Oh my God, oh my God! The creepers are coming, and they look so so so mad. Eeek! Diamond sword. Diamond sword!!!” The kids love it, watching along and shouting out advice as if the millionaire arsehole can hear them. After watching one video the other day, Gatsby turned to me and said, “Daddy. Can we kill a cow?” I asked, “You mean, kill a cow in Minecraft?” to which he gleefully responded, “sure, we can do it Minecraft, too!” Jesus. Still, at least it keeps them off the streets. That’s especially important for Gatsby, who, now that he’s four, will soon be coming into his astral inheritance. If that Czech gypsy woman is to be believed, the “yellow haired demon child” will soon develop the ability to channel his powers, and all of space and time will be inverted and suffering is all mankind will know. So yeah, let him dig crosses in Minecraft instead, says I.

It’s always time to celebrate!
Angie Doig-Thorne. No nonsense, down-to-earth York hypnotherapist
Everyone loves awards season – seeing your favourite actors celebrated for their roles in blockbuster films or TV soaps etc. We are now moving on to the time of year where students are sitting exams, and are full of anxiety and worries about whether they will pass or fail. Thinking about their future, what will be or not be, and finally their time to celebrate in August. I believe every day should be a celebration, for both the little things we achieve on a daily basis as well as our bigger goals and achievements. We should be proud of our successes in life and proud of who we are and who we become.
HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU
ASK THE EXPERT
Small daily improvements will lead to achieving your goals. Why are we so dismissive of what we achieve and the compliments paid to us and why do we continue to put ourselves down? There is no bigger bully in life than yourself. We’re all guilty of it - negative self-talk and self-sabotage. It’s good to have realistic and achievable goals, having unrealistic and unachievable goals just sets you up for failure. Once you regularly achieve realistic goals (instead of occasionally achieving a more unobtainable goal) it will not only boost your self esteem, but help create positivity which will then pave the way for more successes. Celebrating your success is not about being big headed, boastful, conceited or arrogant. It’s about realising your self worth, having positive self-esteem and being happy with what you have achieved. Only you can make these changes to your life, the way you think and how you perceive yourself. Selflove is loving yourself - with regard to your own happiness. It is important to both your welfare and how you cope with problems in your life. Accept yourself, love yourself and keep moving forward. I regularly work with people who think they underachieve, have low selfesteem or low self worth. Something I say whilst working with these clients is “You are what you think you are!” If you think you will fail, you most likely will, however if you think you will succeed – nothing can stop you from doing so. I help people to change their mindset, the way they think about themselves, life and the greater picture. Hypnotherapy is an effective method to re-programme the unconscious (sub-conscious) mind to create new ways of thinking, new behaviours and habits so that you can create a more fulfilling and joyful path to achieve your goals. I am honoured to have been nominated for two Women Mean Business (WMB) Celebration Awards in the ‘Service Provider (Personal)’ and ‘Health, Keep Fit & Wellbeing’ Categories. The WMB Celebration Awards are for women in business, who mean business, in York, Harrogate and Leeds. The winners will be chosen via public vote, so every vote counts! If you would like to vote, please visit: womenmean.business /wmb-awards/
