You look hot No, we’re not being pervy; we’re commenting on the fact that, now June has landed, things are hotting up (although, if we’re being honest, you do look gorgeous today). June in York is the perfect blend of the freshness of the spring, and the heat and sunshine of the summer, creating amazing conditions for getting out there to explore. And what a city to explore. Yes, York is crammed with both outdoors and indoors events this month, from rocking out at the Willowman Festival and trekking around the city at night on St Leonard’s Hospice Midnight Walk, to sitting in an auditorium listening to the fascinating talks of the Festival of Ideas and taking in a theatre

show (flip to the Events pages to see for yourself). But... there is a lot more on show elsewhere, too. Take our Treasure Hunt feature, for example. This month we wander around Walmgate, exploring some of the finer, hidden details of that ever-changing part of York. Also, our regular columnists will either crack you out in laughter, or cause you to thump your fists in disapproval. Either way, flip through their pages while lounging in a park under a widebrimmed hat. We’ll bring the sorbet. So make sure you enjoy the month as best you can, and keep us nearby, okay? Hot sweaty kisses!

The last time the armies of Rome rocked up here it was to build a legionary fortress that would one day become our home city. And, y’know, kill a load of people. Fortunately the soldiers invading for the Eboracum Roman Festival this month are only interested in teaching us about what life was like in York almost 2000 years ago. Phew.
Rachel has been living her life of late according to a book written for wives in 1949. Needless to say, it’s a bit heavy on the importance of ironing.

YORK LIFE
and life in general AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG
“A new hairstyle, a becoming make-up, a figureflattering dress: what more could any girl want?” Qualifications? A decent job? No: the answer is “Freshness”. Never mind jobs, last-minute panics about packed lunches and PE kits, unearthing things from washing baskets: it’s “freshness” that makes you “nice to be near”. And don’t worry if you can’t manage a morning bath every day: an all-over wash can be just as effective, provided you use lots of soap and water, and plenty of dusting powder. This is, obviously, slightly dated advice, and comes courtesy of a book recently given to me by someone who evidently doubts my Domestic Goddess credentials. This, the Woman Week-End Book, was published in 1949. And you may think that makes it completely irrelevant to modern life - but I personally don’t know how I managed without it. Even the contents page is a veritable treasuretrove. “Charm Comes To The Table: Table Mats” is evidently going to be a splendid read, once I have

perused “Making His Shirt Like New”, “A Bright Girl Buys Some Braid”, and “Woman to Woman: Bright Ideas Sent By Readers”. These include a lady (for she is surely a lady, not a woman) who suggests attaching a bicycle lamp to one’s hand sewing machine, so one can sew safely at night, and another who suggests a scheme to “safeguard the spinster”, whereby married women should be passed over for promotion at (shock!) work. “Wives should remember that the career of a single girl is her only chance to hold loneliness and poverty at bay in the sunset of her life. I believe compensation should be paid to spinsters in place of the companionship they have missed.” Quite right. Speaking of spinsters: we also have a Man to advise us on how to find a right ‘un. “Any man can be delightful for a short time”, he says wisely. “Carpet-sweepers, if they knew that they were on trial, would also bring you tea in the mornings.” My thoughts are turning to Barnitts. Never mind a man:

THE FEEDBACK!
The excitement of a hand-knitted Jersey will, of course, inevitably lead to sex. Obviously this doesn’t merit the same number of column inches (all nine of them) devoted to Betty’s Busy Night spent sorting out her wardrobe - but it certainly finds its way into the short stories. Look away now if you are easily offended. There’s one story which features a man pinning up the skirt his wife is sewing (though she quickly zips her housecoat back up afterwards: don’t we all?) Then there’s the one where they almost let the broad beans burn while they’re having a bit of a moment. It certainly beats Position of the Month as featured in the late, non-lamented More! magazine into the proverbial cocked hat. Of course, as every right-thinking woman knows, sex is nowhere near as important as dusting. And this is no ordinary dusting: this is dusting under the seats of the dining chairs, on the picture rails and on top of pelmets. Why? Because otherwise your house will attract SPIDERS. Obviously. I strongly suspect this piece of “Domestic Bliss (apparently) by Edith

Blair” was written by a man, trying to scare spider-phobic women into becoming dust-busters. Sadly my dislike of spiders is outweighed by my indifference to dust, so I move swiftly on to the really important matter: food. Methinks these were the days before the Mediterranean diet, not to mention gluten-free, fat-free, sugarfree, taste-free. Veal pie with parsley, anyone? Meat loaf served with stuffed eggs, followed by glacé cherry flan? Spaghetti with sausage balls (“an appetising dish that will please the hungriest member of the family”)? I would love to give you the recipe, only I have an important chapter to read on why it is important to marry a man taller than oneself. Until next month.

Dear Daphne, I’ve recently been finding dog poo on my front lawn. No matter how many times I pick it up, within a few days more appears. The other day I was watching out of my window to catch the perpetrator, when I saw my neighbours dog crimp one out on my lawn while he was cleaning his car out and didn't notice. I’m sure he must have realised that this is happening regularly. How do I make it stop? Anon

FOUL PROBLEM
Got a problem? OF COURSE YOU HAVE. Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out.
Dear Daphne, I’ve just started my first full time job but I’m painfully shy. I get embarrassed if people address me in large numbers and get nervous about speaking in front of people. The more I think about it, the worse it gets. What can I do? Maddy, Clifton
SHY BUTTERFLY
Hey Madd. Being shy isn’t a bad thing! In fact I personally find it endearing. Being nervous about speaking up at work is ok too - in time you will become more comfortable with the people you work with, and hopefully feel able to share your opinion. Starting your first full time job is a super daunting time and meeting loads of new people is never going to be a shy person’s favourite thing. Practice speaking to people you don't know out of work, for example waiters in restaurants or bus drivers. You will be ok, and good luck, Daph x
Hey Daphne, I recently got into an awkward HOUSEWORK conversation with my partner. We’re planning on moving in together this year and we’ve SHMOUSEWORK uncovered that he has pretty old fashioned principals about who should do housework, cooking and looking after children. It’s something that had never come up before as when I’m at mine I do the majority, and when we’re at his place, he does. I work more hours than him, but anticipated we would split housework half and half. I don't want to be the one doing all of the hard work, so how can I change his opinion?

Dog fouling is the blight of British footpaths and I understand your disdain. This depends on how you get on with your neighbours. If you have a healthy relationship and there’s a chance they haven’t noticed, it’s worth just letting them know that you saw their dog poo on your lawn, and ask them kindly to keep an eye out for it happening in future. If you don't have a good relationship and you believe this oversight is intentional you have two options. The sensible and effective option is to report them to your local council. The fun and disgusting option, is to save the dog poo up, and then strategically place it on your neighbours’ lawn in places you think they are most likely to step.

Dear Daphne, My friend did the most terrible prank on me and I am furious. I had to mercy kill a wild bunny rabbit my cat had brought back to my house, it was very badly injured. After I told my friend she got one of her friends to post on a local buy and sell group pretending her small rabbit had gone missing in the village I live in, as a joke. I was distraught and genuinely thought I had killed someone’s pet without consulting them - I even rang my dad in tears before she admitted it was a joke. I can’t decide whether I want to get her back with an equally terrible prank or fall out with her. J, Askham Bryan
PRANK GONE WRONG
That’s so mean! She’s added a new dimension to the term ‘wicked’ sense of humour, like you hadn’t been through enough already. Is she usually a good friend and someone you deem worth holding onto? If so, plot to get her back - I rarely recommend revenge but this is the perfect opportunity for you to have a laugh at her expense and level the playing field. You might have to wait some time for a situation to arise where you can prank her just as good - but it needs to be unexpected. However, if this feels like the final straw, then you know what to do - cut her out of your life, as what she did was truly harsh. LOOKING FOR ADVICE? HAVE A BURNING QUESTION? LET US HELP!

Changing perceptions that are ingrained in someone form their upbringing is a very difficult thing to do. Though he may say these are his views, in practice does he genuinely think you should do more, despite working longer hours? If so he’s a turd and you can’t let this hypothetical become your reality. Stay strong, make sure he knows that you’re not prepared to take the bulk and iron out what tasks you will both do prior to moving in together - before it’s too late! If he’s a reasonable and level-headed bloke, this shouldn’t turn into an unhealthy debate. If it does, move very carefully - doing more housework might not be a reason to leave someone you love, but deep rooted sexism totally is.

HERE ARE A FEW FA M O U S FAC E S YO U S H A R E YO U R S I G N W I T H. . .
GEMINI
22ND MAY - 21ST JUN
L to R: Donald Trump, Marilyn Monroe, Mel B, Prince
Although June promises to be a bright and busy month on the social scene, there will be a few moments of reflection when you consider past events, and although there are celebrations and anniversaries in the wind, not all of them have a totally happy connotation. Nevertheless, you will find a brave face when necessary, and other people will appreciate the effort you are making.
Some things you can’t change – but some things you can, and if romantic and emotional relationships need fine tuning, then this is the month in which to do it. There shouldn’t be too much difficulty here because it is reasonably clear that a lover or partner is singing from the same hymn sheet.
CANCER 22ND JUN- 22ND JUL
for others. The 6th is a significantly powerful date, but it will take you ‘till the 18th or 19th to make up your mind about which way you’re going to jump.
There is a strong travel energy at play this month, and while some of it could be connected with summer holidays, there is also the feeling of travel being necessary in connection with career profiles and work routines. Ladies of the sign should win most of their arguments, and any feelings of unfairness or injustice should be in the process of being removed.
LEO 23RD JUL - 23RD AUG Some very strong financial energies wrap themselves around you at this
time, and June should be a month of gain and reward. The accent may well be on spending money on luxuries; new cars for some, holidays for others, and anything to do with the sale or purchase of property augers very well indeed. A few of you will be thinking about overseas property.
VIRGO 24TH AUG - 22ND SEP Some division of emotional loyalties when a person from your past crops up, and makes it clear that they are still interested. This could be good news for some, but a dangerous situation
LIBRA 23RD SEP - 23RD OCT A pretty good money month, and especially for people who are looking for new jobs, and who are actively seeking to improve their lot. Between the 1st and the 10th new opportunities present themselves, and although there may be some wobbles of indecision on the 13th, you should
be focusing your eyes on new targets before the month is down.
SCORPIO 24TH OCT - 22ND NOV A degree of domestic tension during the early days of the month, where an unstoppable force meets an unmovable object! Someone with more money than you’ve got will be using their wallet or purse to buy your co-operation, which will simply succeed in making you more angry than you were before! Best tactic is to back off from confrontation and calm down.

PISCES 21ST JAN - 18TH FEB
Not for the first time this year you will find that your pride is getting the better of your common sense. While you might be well chuffed with what’s going on, others will be less pleased. Keep that boastful side of your nature in check and try to see things from a more objective point of view. Don’t wave your purse under your best friend’s nose.
There will be some subtle shifts in values and priorities that you have held close to your heart for a very long time. This is not a bad thing, as it opens up new vistas of possibility for you. A big chunk of time will be given to a new money making venture, and there is a bright spark of financial confidence bouncing around bank balances and bedroom socks.
CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 20TH JAN ARIES 19TH - 20TH MAR When someone says “it’s up to you, darling,” they really do mean it, so take them at their word without fear of recrimination. You may be spending a little extra cash at this time, but it looks as though you are spending wisely. Colleagues and friends of the same sex will have a benign and influential affect on your moods and choices.
AQUARIUS 21ST JAN - 18TH FEB If there was just one word to describe the mood of the month, it would be “irony”. Other people benefit from your efforts more than you do yourself, and that’s okay – but a bit of thanks and acknowledgement would not go amiss! You’ll keep your thoughts to yourself, but they certainly will be somewhat – ironic!
A date on the calendar draws ever closer filling you with a sense of excitement and expectancy. This is the mood of the month, and although you will have to do something to curb your natural Arian impatience, there are some good things to be enjoyed. Romantic energies coalesce with spontaneous social events, and you’ll be making travel plans for later in the summer.

No, we’re not recruiting for pirates (we’re not allowed to any more), but rather for the Joseph Rowntree Theatre. Did you know that, when you go to see a show at the theatre on Haxby Road, there could be up to 85 volunteers working behind the scenes? Wowzer. To keep the theatre running smoothly, and to help make sure all the theatrical spectaculars go off with a bang, the theatre needs new volunteers to step forward and lend a hand. Stage crew fulfil a number of important roles, from operating the sound and lighting desk, to prepping the stage and scenery, and even tearing tickets on the entrance. YORK LIFE Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: THE GAS WORKS If you've walked or driven along Fossbank recently, you might have noticed a huge new building dominating the landscape on the opposite banks of the Foss. The building, which will house a hotel, a restaurant, and possibly also a drive-through, sits on land just off Layerthorpe which for many years was home to the York Gas Works. The works, which once supplied many homes and businesses in the city, actually occupied land not only to the north and east of the Foss, but also on the south where Go Outdoors and Sainsbury's now stand, and were a huge employer. We delve right in.
INDUSTRY When you think about York in the Industrial Revolution, your mind might linger only on trains and the railways. Yet York still enjoyed several big steps into the increasingly industrialised world of the early 19th Century, and one of these was for gas. The York Gaslight Company was incorporated
in 1823 on the two acre site now occupied by Go Outdoors. Their original customer base included 104 subscribing premises, who each got a choice of three different lamps to use to light their homes and businesses. A rival company was established in Hungate in 1837; the York Union Gas Light Company. There was, as you might imagine, a huge rivalry between the two, and their employees would often clash in pubs in the city. Fortunately the tensions ended in 1844 when the two companies were amalgamated into the York United Gas Light Company. The Hungate site was sold to a miller, and the Foss Bank site was expanded to the opposite side of the river – where the new hotel has just been built. As well as the
city centre, an Act of Parliament resulted in the company being able to further supply the areas of Heworth, Acomb, Heslington, Gate Fulford, Clifton, Dringhouses, and Holgate.
PIPES This resulted in a hugely different environment than had existed before, and exists today. Massive pipes, towering gasometers, and an array of brick buildings shot up to cover the area. A bridge was constructed over the Foss, linking the two sites, ferrying both wagons and people, as well as gas pipes, between them. That bridge has long gone, but if you peer over the edge from Foss Bank you'll see two large concrete pillars poking out of the water – the bases of the central supports. To the north the Gas Works site also had access to the railways thanks to the Foss Island branch of the NER – these days the cycle path that leads to the Nestle factory. By 1912 the gas works, now renamed the York

Gas Company, had extended their coverage to include everyone within a seven mile radius of the centre of the city. As well as supplying customers with gas for their lights, they were also providing it for cookers and heaters – both of which were available from the company for a hire charge. By 1923, 22,500 premises were supplied with their gas.
GOVERNMENT STEPS IN In 1948 the gas industry was nationalised. The York Gas Company came under the control of the North Eastern Gas Board, but soon after in 1957, it was announced that the city was to be connected to the National Gas Grid. As York no longer needed its own gas works the site was gradually and slowly demolished and cleared, with the only remaining functioning part of the works being the gasometers just off Layerthorpe – the only surviving one now no longer used and soon to be removed, no doubt. The loss – or rather vast reduction – of the industry in the city affected the entire Layerthorpe area. If you look at the aerial photos you can see, as well as the barrel-like gasometers where now you do your weekly shop in Sainsbo's, there is crowded terrace housing which would have housed the employees of the works. A major contributor to Layerthorpe's... ahem... 'transitional' feel in recent decades has been the removal of an entire industry and all the buildings that supported it.
GOOD OR BAD? So a large part of York had a century and a half dalliance with a loud, smelly, and often dangerous industry, but the only visible remnants are two blocks of semi-submerged concrete. The story of the gas works is another chapter in York's lucky history, whereby it was heavily involved in, and developed by, the industrial revolution, but the physical and aesthetic scars from that period of history are minimal. If you can, take a stroll around Layerthorpe and Heworth Green and see how all the empty ex-industrial spaces are quickly being filled in. Wow... a whole article about gas and not one fart joke. That's growth.

I went out on the River Ouse with York Rescue Boat’s volunteers.
GIG OF THE MONTH
WHO: ...And The Hangnails WHERE: The Crescent WHEN: 3 June 2017 INFO: The launch party of the York duo’s new album, DOG. Think fast paced loud guitars with indie undertones. Featuring support from Bull and Washing Machine Repairman. Band names nowadays eh? I only discovered The Crescent recently: It’s like a working-men’s club-come-indie-music-venue. While Holy Moly and the Crackers played their vibrant folk bangers to a sold out audience the regulars sat in the other side drinking proper pints and eating salted nuts.
Since 2011, eight people have died in the River Ouse. It’s a scary statistic and one that I hadn’t spent too much time thinking about until recently... York Rescue Boat, which started in 2014, carries out vital work to keep people around the river safe. They invited me down to see what they get up to, why they do it, and what they need to sustain it. It’s a Friday evening and it’s FREEZING when I meet the team underneath Ouse Bridge. Ok, I’m being soft - it’s not too bad and at least it’s not raining for a change. Heather, a student at the University of York, Sean, a secondary school teacher and Matthew, who works in a police control room, greet me - albeit a little surprised. They’d heard on the grapevine that someone was coming down - they just hadn’t been sure it would be today. Most river emergencies happen when drunk people fall in and the undercurrent gets them, right? Nah. Matthew from York Rescue Boat turns my pre-conceived ideas on their head. He explains that despite the fact that patrols are run on weekends: a lot of
emergency work done doesn't involve drunk incidents, but working with people struggling with mental health issues. Matthew adds: “A lot of people think it's the speed of the water too - It's actually the temperature and a lot of people underestimate it. I reckon it will be about 7 degrees right now, it's freezing.” This is the temperature that most premium lagers are served at (6 to 9 degrees Celsius) to put it into perspective. Pretty damn cold. If you’re not wearing thermal protection, falling into cold water can be immediately life-threatening. When cold water makes contact with your skin, cold shock can cause an
immediate loss of breathing control. Senior Ops Manager, Dave Horn, swings by to greet me. Having been a policeman in York for many years, he's familiar with the line of work and familiar with the area. Dave got involved in 2014 and his reasoning is straight forward: “I’ve seen the consequences of people dying in the river and the devastating effect it has on families.” Many of the volunteers for the charity have felt the pain of losing a loved one to the River Ouse. The charity was started in the summer of 2014 by Dave Benson, who had lost a friend in this way. Jackie Roberts, mum of Megan Roberts, is now a trustee of the charity and when volunteer David

Platt turned up later on, he revealed that his uncle also passed away in the River Ouse. At 7.30pm the team radio in to let the emergency services know they’re available. They’re free to the services and run entirely off donations. But the team don't just deal with emergencies. A key part of the work they do is to educate and prevent incidents through workshops, safety patrols, talking to the general public, and giving out information. Like Dave says: “For me, a good night is nothing happening; our success is when nothing happens”. The charity has 35 operational members and 55 in total for events, admin and fundraising. Crew member, builder, Barefoot Waterskiing Silver Medallist for team GB and famous cat owner, (Yep, learnt all of that in five minutes, could’ve probably written the whole column on him TBH!) David Platt, Aka Wee Man (He insists it’s fine to print this) is very chatty and more than happy to share his reasons for helping out. He sadly lost a family member to the River Ouse 6 years ago, and he now regularly volunteers. Despite this, he believes the river has been kind to him personally - it’s where he learnt to barefoot waterski and he wanted to give something back. The job has already been incredibly rewarding for him too: “I stopped a young lad who wanted to kill himself over there
| www.chsyork.co.uk |
(gestures towards the opposite side of the river): we calmed him down and rang through and got the ambulance crew to come. Hopefully now he'll get the treatment he needs.” And for the team, this is what it’s about. Keeping people safe, preventing bad things happening and being there when something bad does happen. Some people whinge about working on weekends, and others give them up freely to help keep other people safe. I'm person A and not proud. But I’m glad I got to meet some B’s. York Rescue Boat are currently fundraising to purchase two kayaks and equipment essential to assist the charity in patrolling of the two rivers in York. So far they’ve raised £3,504 of their £5,000 target. Head on over to www. yorkrescueboat.com to donate.

MARKETING ONE-TO-ONE by John Allsopp
“Connectivity is destiny - and the most connected powers, and people, will win.” Parag Khanna One of the features of your product or service is the degree to which it is connected with the rest of the world. It obviously IS connected, whether we think of it or not. I hold an ambition to investigate a tin of baked beans from my local shop, working through the supply chain to who grew the beans and who was at the rockface on the day my tin was mined. What’s their life like? If you know any production companies who could help me pitch that to TV, get in touch :-) One way of looking at social media is: you have your clients, your social media followers and then there’s everyone else. Your followers are supporters. Perhaps they haven’t bought anything yet, but you can involve them and gain from their support. For instance, you could ask their opinion. Ask for help, a share, a supplier recommendation. Offer a volunteer position.
MODE RN MARKE TI NG F OR BUSY BUS IN ESSES
By being connected, you could gain social proof through reviews, testimonials and comments. Social proof simply says “if everyone else thinks something’s good, it must be good”. One of my favourite examples is the Marks & Spencer website where they seem to allow bad product review comments to stand. Knowing that increases trust and I like to think Marks & Spencer learns from the comments too.
other’s mistakes and foibles. For me, great ideas come from the variety of human experience.
Got an idea for some funky clobber? You can submit your design to https://www.betabrand.com and if they like it they’ll put it into their thinktank. If customers like it they’ll do crowdfunding, and if it hits target they’ll make the product and pay you a commission. It’s like the t-shirt design companies (eg. https://www. threadless.com) on steroids.
So here’s today’s mental exercise in sitting down and being awesome. Take your best product and connect it (it’s just a fun mental game, so put your resistance in your trouser pocket, take your trousers off and throw them in the bin).
What I’m saying is, we appear to have gotten ourselves into a funk. Tolerance has been totally lanced. But there’s an Internet principle you might like to live by which basically says: be good and polite about what you put out, and be accepting of
It’s not just people connections. Your next car will probably be sending a zillion bits of data to its parent company as you drive, and soon after that (they are already here) none of us will own a car, we’ll all use selfdriving Uber-pods each with the sum driving experience of all their cars on the road.
Ready? OK: how could you engage the whole of your market in making your best product even better? Can you get a hundred times more comments? Design ideas? Your operating manual: what if people could highlight where they get stuck, like your satnav shows congestion? (I can make that happen, btw) Ask disabled people how they like it.
What problem might your network of supporters be able to solve? What if you could build an army of supporters so energised they’ll pretty much do your marketing for you by word of mouth? And what about that data connectivity, your fridge ordering groceries, all that, what sort of app arises from that? Remember, open source software is built by volunteers. Have a fun read of The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer for a dose of the gorgeous side of generosity of spirit. Do you really need all these walls? Massive congratulations are due to one local business as this year they celebrate their half century. WLD Textiles, based on Lansdowne Terrace off Lawrence Street, has been both going strong and remained family-owned since being established in 1967 by William Lewyn Dodd (now you know what WLD stands for). In that time the business has grown to offer an increasingy large catalogue of products, from curtain poles and furniture, to DIY and tools. Still owned and operated by William's son and grandson, WLD is well placed to cater to your building needs and survive all the way to 2067. We hope to still be reporting on them then. n Visit www.wldyork.co.uk

SPORT REPORT
with Dan Tait
Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence. home when they are defeated. Of course, pessimistic as I am now, I am sure by the time the new season comes round - whether that opening game is against Gainsborough Trinity, Bradford Park Avenue, or Gloucester City - I will have that buzz of excitement back. Okay, maybe I won’t, but surely by that time I will have worked out how sides like Gloucester, Tamworth and Kidderminster are somehow playing in the Northern side of a regionalised non-league when they are hardly local.
Occasionally I like to take a walk down memory lane, and I don’t mean like those people on Facebook who post a selfie eating a sandwich on the same day each year. I like to look back at the same month’s column each year to see what was happening in the sporting world back then. Reading back to this time a year ago, York City were facing up to relegation after a season of woe for the supporters. So basically I could
have pretty much cut and pasted that column to now, where unbelievably York City are facing up to playing regionalised football for the first time in their history after back to back relegations. People seem to think by saying to me
“You get to play Harrogate Town” is some sort of consolation to me. I can’t tell whether they are trying to say it won’t be as far for you to travel
In last year’s June column I mentioned that I had asked my friend during half-time of the last home fixture who he would retain for next year’s squad. He replied ‘that lad with the pitch fork looks handy’! At least this time, most supporters would be quite happy retaining the main bulk of those players that ended the season, bizarre as that sounds, given the squad Gary Mills eventually cobbled together were

showing some promise, but lacking, as it turned out, an extra goal to see them over the line. At time of writing the club is in a state of transition, again. The Wembley trip is on the horizon but none of the squad has yet committed to a season of Conference North football. The club’s finances are reported to be £300,000 in the red for the previous season which accounts for player wages and bonuses. Surely there cannot have been many bonuses handed out! I’ll settle for a small handful of players such as Jon Parkin, Sean Newton and Daniel Parslow to create a spine of a team who care as much as the manager seemingly does.

SPORT
From a sporting lowlight in York City’s plight, surprisingly came the highlight as in the same day the Minstermen drew 2-2 with Forest Green, which sealed their fate, Anthony Joshua had his epic, career defining fight with Wladamir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium. As a boxing fan more often than not, in my experience, fights with this sort of build-up flatter to deceive. That’s not to mention the extra mortgage payment most of us have shelled out in watching bouts like David Haye Vs Audley
Harrison, Tony Bellew Vs Nathan Cleverly, and even the fight of the century…Manny Pacquiou against Floyd Mayweather, which had about as much entertainment value as Love Island. So perhaps we were due a boxing classic, and Joshua v Klitschko was certainly worth the wait. Both fighters went so hell for leather that both ended up on the canvas, though neither of their times spent on the floor combined would add up to the amount Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez spent rolling around after getting a throw in land on his shoulder. Sanchez then tweeted a picture of a cut lip which didn’t really do him any favours or get the sympathy he was craving. The sky is now the limit for Anthony Joshua, and it seems Tyson Fury is waiting in the wings for a British mega fight which would be intriguing to say the least.
Read on...
On the local boxing scene you may remember my recent reporting of the Revival of the Jorvik City bill which represented the first professional boxing in the city for over six years. Now York’s only professional manager and trainer, Glenn Banks, has announced a follow up show, entitled “The Next Chapter”, scheduled for 8th July. Once again Energise Sports Centre will be the venue, with many fighters who excelled in the previous show on the packed bill. Danny Holmes is going to be the main attraction in a title fight, but more details to follow in next month’s column.

YOUR SATNAV IS LYING TO YOU! Most modern SatNavs can tell you how fast you’re going using GPS to track your movements. However, some motorists also use their devices to warn them of the speed limits on the road, but this info is often wrong. An increasing number of people are being fined for speeding when their SatNavs said they were travelling under the limit. If you use your SatNav like this make sure that it is fully updated to the latest version of the software as this will refresh its database of speed limit information. However, when it comes to speed, no gadget will ever beat your speedometer, nor your eyes looking out for speed signs.
12 year old attempts to drive across Australia
New South Wales police recently arrested a 12 year old boy 800 miles from his home. The boy, who had, one night, decided to steal his parents car and drive to Perth – 2500 miles away – was picked up by police in a remote mining town. It seems as if he had had an accident along the way and was pulled over by the police due to a trailing bumper on the car. The cops were more than a little shocked to find the driver to be an unlicensed 12 year old. It isn’t sure yet why he decided to go to Perth, which would have involved crossing one of the most dangerous deserts in the world, or even how he was able to get 800 miles. Which is 200 more miles than the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats. We kinda want to meet this kid...
This year is the centennial of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s failed attempt to cross Antarctica. Although their ship became stuck in ice, Shackleton’s crew managed to survive in the freezing conditions long enough to be rescued. Had they not, Patrick Bergal, Shackleton’s great-grandson, wouldn’t have been able today to finish the job for him, all thanks to Hyundai and vastly modified Santa Fe Sport. The off-road car was altered to tackle the icy conditions of the continent, so Patrick could drive it – assisted by a huge crew, mind – to the cabin where his ancestor stayed. The car had been etched with the names of the crew, and all their descendants got together as well, to celebrate the anniversary. To see the car in action, search ‘Shackleton’s Return’ in YouTube. It’s worth it.

In the first of her new columns, Mel Collier of JDL poses a very important interior design question...
BATH VS. SHOWER?
DISAGREEING WITH YODA
Yoda; you may be familiar with the little green guy with the big green ears from Star Wars. Generally I find myself fairly in awe of him, not only of his mastery of "the force" but also his zen philosophy on life. I am reminded of such classic quotes as: "When nine hundred years old you reach, look as good you will not." Which is a fair point, as is "Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is." However there is one comment that he makes – the big one – I have to take task with, and it's the classic "Do or do not, there is no try". With this I disagree, and here's why.
THERE IS TRY It's important to test, to see if something is right, before committing. But why, I hear you ask, is Matt banging on about Yoda when he should be waxing lyrical about
electrical products? Well here's the thing: the need to try was one of my fundamental starting points when designing our new showroom. I felt it was vital that everything on display should be plugged in, lit up, and ready to use. It's one of the key points that makes us different to shopping online; the ability to touch, test and try. This way you can quickly understand any new technologies and, more importantly, make sure the product will work for you in the way you want it to. Maybe this could be the start of a new trilogy, starting with.... The Showroom Fights Back! We look forward to welcoming you to our new, plugged in, showroom on Monks Cross Drive very soon. Find us just behind Primark along the same road as The Pear Tree Farm. n In the meantime, visit www.htodd.co.uk
A question I get asked on a daily basis is whether you should take a bath out and replace it with a shower. Just ten years ago would've said a family home should always have a bath, but times have now changed. Most homes on the continent only have a shower, and this is for a number of reasons; a shower is much more environmentally friendly and normally uses a lot less water than a bath, showers are generally more convenient than baths, and they are also considered to be much more hygienic. Here at JDL we put showers in spaces as small as a cylinder cupboard, right up to those that are a full wetroom; the options are limitless.
TO EACH THEIR OWN Depending on your line of thought, my overall answer is always the same: do what suits you. A house no longer needs a bath in order to sell, and a decent shower area will add to the value overall. As long as your bathroom looks and feels luxurious, and is used to its full potential, prospective buyers will love it. If you come to JDL, I can show you what the options will look like on our 3D Design programme. We can talk through the pros and cons to you and your family, and come up with something that will work. In other news, JDL have just been accredited as a Which? Trusted Trader, which is a real achievement. This means that any of our customers now have a full Which? guarantee with all of our work and also have peace of mind that they are dealing with a caring reputable company. n Visit www.jdl.co.uk or ring 01904 623109

Work Space Goals
Getting motivated to do work is a job within itself. When a messy work space and unappealing decor come into the equation, it can take a serious amount of self control to sit yourself down and crack on with it. Make the process a little easier on yourself by making your work environment a pleasant and efficient one.
Organisation Be methodical in the organisation of your workspace. Things you use the most should be readily available to you in order to save time and effort. Get rid of anything you don’t need or use anymore and physically clean the area too including your mouse and keyboard. Set up a proper filing system in your documents on your PC and clean up your desktop putting files where they should be. Emails should be dealt with asap. Whether they are deleted, filed, or replied to on the spot - don’t just leave them piling up in your inbox.
Colour Colour psychology is real. There have been countless studies to prove different theories as to how colours affect peoples emotion, behaviour and opinion. Reds are generally powerful and liked, but can represent danger. Yellows and oranges are happy, bright and warm, but can draw too much attention. Blues are overall the most popular, said to be relaxing and even linked to curbing hunger. Light greens represent nature and wellbeing. Black is eternally formal and chic while grey is the colour of
Jorvik
Waste Removal
compromise, white represents pure and completeness. When choosing colour its important to think about what work you do. If you have a stressful profession, calming blues could be the antidote. For creatives, there’s the opportunity for punchy brights or bold darks.
Personalise Decorate your space with things that make you happy and inspire you. It might be family photos, plants to care for, aspirational quotes or examples of great work you’ve done in the past that you’re proud of. Open bookshelves with manuals, guides and industry related reading are the perfect backdrop, to be called upon in times of crisis - whether a creative block or a technical difficulty.
How do we do it? An air pump is also a good idea. You can buy mains or even solarpowered units that sit by your pond and pump air through a weighted stone in the water. It bubbles up and adds oxygen as it breaks the surface. Do something like this, and you’ll have happy, healthy fish all summer long.
Oxygen levels in ponds are lowest just before dawn as plants suck it all up overnight. If you have a pump or fountain, don’t turn it off at night. The more splashing in the water, the more oxygen. It might help to add a waterfall instead of just a pipe, or change your fountain type to a more energetic kind. If you don’t have a waterfall or

fountain, perhaps add one.
Yay! Summer is here! Although you might think that the fish in your pond have it easier at this time of year, warmer water actually holds less oxygen. You might notice fish crowding around the bottom of a waterfall or fountain, gasping at the surface. This is a serious issue, so best to tackle it right now.

WE’RE CLEVER
Aren’t we? And no, not just ‘we of the Link’ (although, come on…), but rather the entire city of York. We’re so clever that each year we hold a festival about all the good ideas we have, and it is returning this month. The Festival of Ideas, 6th-18th June, will highlight all the clever-doing we get up to in York, as well as welcoming other clever people from the around the world to speak. Here’s one such clever idea: a drone with an umbrella on it, that is programmed to fly over your head when it rains. Boom, done a clever.
IT’S HEATING UP
Aww, yeah baby! As it’s June the sun is shining (more), the sky is clear (ish), and the gorgeous folk of our fair city are out in force to take advantage of it all. June truly is an awesome month for doing stuff outside, as long as that stuff doesn’t involve snowboarding, wearing a scarf, and singing Christmas carols. What is does involve is a fantastic array of outdoorsy events to take part in, and we have the low-down on the very best from in and around York. Flip to the Events pages toward the rear of the mag. Yo welcome, homies.
42
YORK IS CHANGING
Seriously, it is… and faster than ever before. Two of our regular features highlight that this month; Time Travel and the Treasure Hunt. For Time Travel we look at the lost gas works site between Layerthorpe and Heworth Green, now that a huge new hotel has sprung up there, and for Treasure Hunt we wander around the Walmgate are, which is also undergoing a transformation. Perhaps soon the city will be renamed YRK and it’ll stretch all the way to Leeds. No! Anything but that!
LOTS OF US CARE It’s National Carers Week this month, and although the week is set up to highlight the plight and dedication of those of us who care for someone, researching it to write about revealed that a staggering number of people are carers. We’re not talking about nurses and paid care-givers here, we mean those people who spend a great deal of their time looking after someone they love for no pay at all. Check out our special feature about Carers Week and find out how you can get involved (and if you are a carer, how you can get help and support!).

Roses
Hybrid Tea roses were bred during the later part of the nineteenth century but they tended to be weak. During the next 30 years more vigour was bred into the type and by the early part of the twentieth century their popularity exploded and has never waned since. Hybrid Tea roses are considered the 'classic' rose shape with long pointed buds opening to reveal petals neatly arranged into a high centred cone, in a bewildering range of colours, often with the classic rose perfume. They are repeat flowering and produce their blooms in distinct flushes throughout the summer months. Popular examples of Hybrid Tea roses are ‘Alec’s Red’, ‘Fragrant Cloud’, ‘Grandpa Dickson’, ‘Peace’, ‘Polar Star’, ‘Silver Wedding’ and ‘Troika’. During the 1920’s breeders developed the Floribunda or cluster flowered rose by cross breeding Hybrid Tea roses with Polyanthas roses. The resulting varieties had the shape, scent and colour of the hybrid tea and the large trusses of blooms and true perpetual flowering of the polyanthas. Although the individual blooms are
smaller it is more than made up for by the quantity of blooms produced. Popular floribunda roses include ‘Arthur Bell’, ‘Golden Wedding’, ‘Margret Merrill’ and ‘Queen Elizabeth’.
IN THE GARDEN
The modern patio roses are a form of floribunda that have been bred for their compact size and abundance of flowers, their size making them ideal for growing in pots. These include ‘Sweet Dream’, ‘Sweet Magic’ and ‘Top Marks’. Hybrid Tea, Floribunda and Patio roses are best pruned in two stages. When flowering finishes reduce the overall height by approximately a third, then a second formative pruning is given late February/early March with a sloping cut above an outward facing bud. Climbing roses produce their blooms on a framework of old wood, therefore all pruning in the first season after planting should be to establish this framework, after this time the only pruning required is to remove any dead or diseased wood and maintain the framework. Rambling roses produce flowers on new wood and should be pruned hard immediately after flowering removing all the old growth that has just finished flowering. New growth will replace this and flower the following year
THREATS
The major fungal diseases associated with roses are Blackspot, which is particularly prevalent in wet summers, Mildew, and Rust which are both prevalent during warm, dry, still weather. Most new varieties of rose are now bred to have some natural resistance to these diseases. Chemical control of all the above can be achieved using a combined fungicide and insecticide (controls aphids at the same time) sprayed at 14-21 day intervals throughout the growing period. It is best to alternate the products used to prevent a build up of resistance to any particular product.
Good plant hygiene is also important to stop disease spreading or re-occurring. To do this prune out or pick off any affected leaves, also collect all the fallen leaves in autumn and remove from the garden as these are a prime source for infection next year as the spores may overwinter in the soil and be splashed back up onto the new foliage.

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask
CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.
Q.
Chris, can you help? I have a Viburnum Tinus ‘Eve Price’ and every year something eats holes in the leaves, making it look unsightly. Is there anything I can do to stop this happening?
Sounds like this damage is being caused by the Viburnum Beetle. The symptoms are irregular holes that are eaten of the leaves of native Viburnum, Viburnum Opulus, and Viburnum Lantana. The worst to be effected in Viburnum Tinus as this variety is evergreen. Holes are eaten between the main veins and the remaining tissues turn brown. The eggs of the beetle overwinter in cracks on young stems and hatch in mid-May, producing creamyyellow larvae with black markings. They feed on leaves in May to June and grow to a length of about 7mm before going to the soil to pupate, which is generally a month after hatching.
Adult beetles emerge from the pupal cells in the ground during July and August and also feed on the leaves before laying eggs at the tips of year-old shoots. Each female lays about 200-300 eggs. It’s important to look out for the first signs of damage in May to June and then spray with a contact insecticide to kill the young larvae. Repeat after a week or so , if necessary. You can rejuvenate eaten plants by cutting back hard, as this will bring a fresh flush of new growth. Also feed well with a good fertilizer or Blood, Fish & Bone. Hope this helps!
Q.
Early summer is here again, so it’s a good time to plant summer plants, and also to plant hanging baskets and planters to give colour throughout the season.
If it is bedding plants you’re after, geraniums are still one of the best performers in borders, followed by bedding geraniums in rich reds, pinks, and whites. Bizzy Lizzies are now making a comeback after the trouble with mildew a few years ago.

The colour range is immense, and grows very well in shade. Petunias are perfect for a full-dun garden, as are marigolds with their bright yellow, orange, and red flowers. Salvia and Antirrhinums are still old favourites for the lovely bright colours. Also, Lobelia and Alyssum are always good as ground cover colour. Bedding plants that are good for planters and hanging baskets for summer have never been better than they are today. None stop Begonias and Trailing Begonias are in vogue, and with their big frilly flowers they will brighten any container. Fuchsias are like ballet dancer’s frocks, and work well in shade. The choice of trailing plants today is amazing: Trailing begonias, Million Bells, Centradenia, Bidens, Diasica, Felicia, Helichrysum Gold and Silver, all give you nicely coloured foliage. Trailing Geraniums will tolerate dry conditions and still produce lots of flowers. All the best with yours!

S AS GA EEN RD ON EN WO ER’S RL D
TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS. Going to a ‘pick your own’ farm to gather strawberries was a summer ritual when I was young. It was not just the flavour of the fruit surreptitiously slipped in the mouth when the fierce lady on the gate was distracted, but the smell of sunbathed fruit that colours the memory. Today I try and repeat this experience in the garden by growing my own strawberries. I like to grow strawberries the ‘traditional’ way in the soil. I think this gives a better flavour than the commercially grown ones now mostly cultivated in bags at table height, usually under polythene. These methods have enabled British growers to extend the season so that, with winter imports, strawberries are in the shops all year round. Gardeners must have more modest aspirations. Getting ripe fruit in time for Wimbledon fortnight and picking through to the end of July is enough for me.
BED TIME I have four strawberry beds. That’s not just because I like the fruit but because strawberry plants crop well for no more than four years. I plant a new bed each year, digging up the oldest after cropping, so there are always four beds of differently aged plants. The new bed is established either from bought plants or my own ‘runners’; little plantlets taken from the youngest bed in autumn. Runners from young plants are least likely to be diseased and have most vigour. In the older established beds I remove runners through the season to maintain neat and separate plants. This appeals to my sense of tidiness and prevents a ‘messy’ bed, full of interwoven and crowded plants. Strawberries grow best when given plenty of space. I like to have at least 40cm between plants, usually growing them in double rows with a similar distance between the lines.
VERY BERRY It is sometimes supposed that strawberries are so named because of the practice of surrounding plants with straw. A little etymological research suggests this is not the case, but I still like to place straw round the plants as the fruit develops in early June. The main reason for this is to lift the fruit from the soil and reduce mud splash during a downpour. Although strawberries need water to swell the fruit,
prolonged rain at ripening time can set off botrytis, a grey mould that can ruin the crop. Too much water also gives insipid fruit, so go easy on the watering and never directly douse the berries. Apart from slugs munching the fruit the other big problem is birds – mostly blackbirds and thrushes. Netting as soon as there’s a hint of red is essential otherwise the berries will be stripped. I use fruit cage net, held well above the plants on canes topped with plastic caps and anchored to the ground by wire staples or metal poles. This usually prevents all but the most determined avian thieves, but be sure to keep the net taunt to stop birds becoming entangled. Strawberry growing takes effort but the rewards are worth it. In some ways it’s the end of the crop that’s best. As the fruit is picked it’s the smaller, later ripening, and sometimes misshapen berries that remain. These are the ‘jammers’, destined for the jar, but a few can be savoured because these always seem to have the richest taste and, if the sun shines, the smell of pick your own from summers past.
Best of luck with yours!

Play things Do you know about heuristic play? You might have noticed that your baby or toddler prefers to play with loo roll tubes and pots and pans than the actual toys you've bought for them. Coined in the 1980s, heuristic play is all about exploring random objects and letting children experiment with them; sorting them, stacking them, combining them, and banging them together. During a heuristic play session the parent sits back and lets the child get on with it alone or with other kids, allowing them to test things out for themselves and explore the object and what they can do with them. One local nursery that is embracing this kind of play is First Steps, based in Clifton Moor. They are keen to provide the wee darlings

that attend the nursery the best possible heuristic experience as possible, and need your help to do so. They are looking for people to donate items which could be included in their heuristic play equipment and need the likes of pine cones, wooden spoons, pots and pans, brushes, sponges – anything really. The items need to be new, for hygiene reasons, and if you have any questions about what is appropriate, call First Step's manager Geraldine and ask. Or rather, her academy is. The York branch of the Pauline Quirke Academy hasn't been accepting new recruits lately, as the school has been preparing for a huge performance in London. To be honest, I'm not quite ready to allow my little Shay to head off to a music festival by himself – maybe give him 15 years or so before that happens. But, one festival I am very happy to take him to, is the Willowman Festival, staged this month in Knayton near Thirsk. This family-friendly festival takes place 15th-18th June and features a mix of musical talent including Aswad, Soul II Soul, Zion Train, Slamboree and many more big names. As lots of families go, camping there isn't as... erm... A CARING NATION
Once again June will play host to a very important week of celebrations – one that impacts the lives of millions of Britons. National Carers Week will return 12th-18th June and act as the perfect time to learn all about caring.
DURING THE WEEK...
Right now, you might be the subject of this nationally recognised week, and not even know it. Many people look after someone; be it an elderly relative, a neighbour, a disabled friend, or a child. You might simply consider yourself a good partner, wife, husband, friend, or parent, but if you spend a large chunk of your day caring for someone else, you're a carer and you're entitled to help. No matter what your reasons are for caring for another person, this week is for you – to highlight your cause, help spread useful information, and also to make sure you're getting everything you're entitled too.
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
The main message behind National Carers Week is that nobody has to struggle alone. There could be other people caring right in your neighbourhood, and working together – even if that means meeting up for a coffee and talking about the demands on your time – could help. The website www.carersweek.org is filled with resources to do just that, and also contains listings for events that you could attend to meet other carers, as well as tonnes of helpful information, including the latest on benefits.
Watch this
Let people know you’re a carer, and spread the message by: • Write/tweet to your local MP to get their thoughts on caring. This is especially important as we approach the General Election. •
If there is no event taking place in your local area, organise one yourself. Upload the details to www.carersweek.org
•
Talk to friends and family members and tell them what it is you actually have to do, each and every day. See if you can get help from them, and also find out who else cares.
•
If you have a job, as many carers do, talk to your boss and colleagues about what you do and distribute info about Carer Week.

CARE AND CARE ALIKE HELP AND ADVICE Life, hacked. If you, or someone you care for, has sight issues, we've found a great website that could help make everyday tasks simpler. www. henshaws.org.uk is a charity that helps people who are blind and partially sighted, and their site is filled with helpful 'life hacks', including an ingenious way to safely chop vegetables, and also how to match your shoes. Check it out.

Bits and bobs for those who care for someone
Likewise, if you care for someone with hearing difficulties, here are some useful tips: • Make sure you get their attention and stand well in front of them while saying something. • Look directly at the person when you talk. • Speak slowly, but do not over-emphasise your mouth movements - as this can make it hard to read your lips. • Don't shout – although it may be necessary to speak louder. Remember that shouting can make it hard for people to lip-read.
Gizmos and gadgets to help people with dementia
SITPACK. This handy little gadget is a telescopic sitting pole with a seat that folds up to the size of drinks can. If you care for someone who loves to get and out and about as much as possible, but who gets tired easily, the Sitpack in your bag would be a handy tool. Extend it in seconds and give them something to perch on for a while. n £45 from www.sitpack.com
AUDEARA HEADPHONES. Many people suffer from some degree of hearing loss, but especially those who are older. Audeara are headphones that give you a hearing test when you first put them on, so they automatically adjust to make the listening experience bespoke to your ears. This means that even people with quite advanced hearing loss could enjoy their music without having to crank up the volume. n £155 from www.audeara.com

‘Ere, boss... Do you run a business or manage people? If so, here’s how you can help the carers in your team. Make sure your employees know about their right to request flexible working and for emergency time off to care for people. Ensure you know who in your workforce is a carer, to better understand their situation.
Introduce paid care leave so they don't have to take annual leave for caring emergencies. Ask your Human Resources department to highlight the kind of support people can get through flexible working.
nfo@chocolate-works.co.uk When hiring, consider that candidates may have valuable skills gained while caring. Managing money and working to a tight schedule will always come in handy.
Help is just down the road
Although Carer's Week is a national event, with thousands of people across the country taking part, it's important to remember that there is so much happening right in your neighbourhood. York is well served by York Carers Centre, a resource designed to help those who look after someone, be that person ill, disabled, old, or suffering with addictions.
There is also a great section on their website aimed just at young carers, as well as all the information – local to York – that a carer of any age will find useful. n Visit www.yorkcarerscentre.co.uk or call 715490.

LUNATICS, ASYLUM, ETC… Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words. As everyone panicked, and as the Jedi were stretched thin fighting the droids across the galaxy, evil Palpatine made it easy for him to be awarded special powers; first to create his own army of clones, then to act as a dictator in order to crush the Separatists. You might see where I’m going with this analogy.
COME WHAT MAY
Regular readers of this column will know that I’m not one for political rants. No, you lot wander my way for inappropriate jokes or to hear what daft tosh my kids have uttered recently, not for passive aggressive and divisive opinions about politics. Well strap in kids, because it’s happening this month. Oh, holy cow it’s happening! By the time you receive this issue of YLL it will be mere days until the surprise, bonus election that was sprung upon us all. Dust off your democracy pants and get ready to wield a small, grubby pencil in a school hall. However, unlike most other elections, this one is filling me with dread due to the current political climate resembling the plot of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
PLOT THICKENS Much maligned by critics, and also by people who know what a good film is, Episode III details the time when, a long time ago, in that galaxy far, far away, the evil Galactic Empire seize power and crush the do-gooding Jedi Knights. When I first saw it some 12 years ago, I remember thinking that the manner in which Chancellor Palpatine (AKA Darth Sidious! Eek!) seized power was pretty impressive, and also that this whole thing was waaaay below the talents of Christopher Lee. Palpatine created a problem in the form of the Droid Army of the Separatists, then had them attack the – then democratic – Galactic Republic.
Instead of an army of unfeeling droids, we have Brexit; an admittedly more terrifying thing than killer robots commanded by a Sith Lord. Instead of an army of Clones, we have those who think Brexit at all costs is the way to go. And instead of the Jedi, we have political parties and individuals who are interested in either a soft Brexit, or no Brexit at all. Can you guess who we have instead of the evil Emperor Palpatine? I’ll give you a clue. No I won’t. It’s Theresa May. Using Brexit like Palpatine used the attacking droid

Smarting eyes from Smartphone usage?
WITH an estimated 35 million smartphones in the UK and usage of tablets increasingly overtaking PCs and laptops, our mobile communication devices are here to stay. However, the human eye wasn’t designed for these 21st century gadgets, so it’s important to use them in moderation. The tiny lettering on smartphone screens can cause eye strain without appropriate spectacles or contact lenses. Reading glasses are often recommended for people over the age of 40 and today’s anti-stress and varifocal lenses can also help you to navigate those closely-packed lines of text. Devices like the Kindle e-reader replicate the appearance of a traditional book to reduce eye fatigue and they’re designed to be held at arm’s length – a useful tip for any mobile device.
THE CLONE WARS Just as Palpatine called for emergency powers when the war effort was becoming desperate and his opponents were in disarray, so May called an election in hopes of making herself the Empress, while her opponents bicker and squabble over Brexit and gay marriage and mugwumps. Nobody has even voted yet, but already I hear the scream of Tie-Fighters overhead, and the looming silhouette of a Death Star being constructed. The black cloak industry is about to see a boom. Obviously, sitting here in central York, where the Brexit vote wasn’t a skin-of-the-teeth result, and where the Jedi.. sorry, Labour… seem pretty comfortable regardless of the Imperial takeover, it’s difficult to feel like you can do anything. Tactical voting feels like hitting a Star Destroyer with a

armies, May has assembled a following the likes of which the Torys have never seen. Her ‘clones’, who set upon the ‘Jedi’ and brand them unpatriotic, will do as she says, despite in many cases being a part of a community which was, and continues to be, devastated by Tory cuts and austerity.
chopstick. And besides, voting for someone you don’t actually want to represent you in the Galactic Senate, purely because you’re fearful of a Sith Lord, isn’t really democracy, is it? But, as with the ending of Revenge of the Sith, there is hope. The Empire may be about to seize absolute power, but those of us who survive the disintegration of the NHS and the government sifting through our internet history, should act as the Rebellion did. Instead of X-Wings, attack them with Twitter. And instead of a light saber, wield your kindness and tolerance. They hate that. With any luck the next time I write a pollitical column it will be in reference to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Unleash the mud! Returning to Yorkshire for a second time this summer, Dirty Hero is a tough, rough and gruelling assault course which is definitely not for the faint-hearted. After hundreds of die-hard fitness (and fun) fans tackled the Dirty Hero course at Newburgh Priory in May, it is Duncombe Park that will be hosting the next event, on 22nd July. Whatever the weather, runners take on either five or ten miles of obstacles and challenges, forcing themselves to the very limit, while also having a big ol’ laugh at the same time. Hey, any chance to see your mates get covered mud, fall over logs, and be lightly electrocuted is fun in our books. n To book your place, and to find out more, visit www.dirtyhero.co.uk
ACOMB GETS ACTIVE It seems like the residents of Acomb better get in training, as two new sporting events will land there next month. On 23rd July, four to 14 year olds are invited to tackle the 2k Acomb Fun Run, with all participants receiving a medal afterwards. Then, a week later on the 29th, the Acomb Family Triathlon will see families complete a 400m swim, a 1.2km bike ride, then a 1k run – all held in and around Energise. The new events are designed to get people enjoying exercise together as families, and they sound lots of fun. Interested? n To secure your places for either event, call 551550.

ASK THE EXPERT
HAIR & BEAUTY Q&A Resident beauty expert, Dr Saleen Zimri talks about a non-invasive way to lose weight this summer. few risks or side effects compared to traditional liposuction.
For some, dreams of beaches might soon be turning into bikini nightmares. Many men and women look to lose weight in the early months of summer, the hot weather can help to reduce appetite and here at Skin Doctor, we offer a highly effective, but non-invasive, surgery free method of weight loss.
With products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service.
3D LIPO 3D-lipo is probably one of the most advanced machines of its type and offers a powerful new dimension in non-surgical fat removal, treatment of cellulite and skin tightening for both face and body. 3D Lipomed is a powerful and revolutionary new approach to liposuction which does not involve surgery. 3D-Lipo uses a combination of Cavitation (deep fat removal), Cryolipolysis (superficial fat removal), Radio frequency (Skin tightening) and Dermology (cellulite reduction) to destroy fat cells instead of merely breaking them up and releasing them into the body. CAVITATION: Uses ultrasonic waves to break down fat cells – great for body contouring. CRYOLIPOLYSIS: Uses a combination of electro and cryo-therapy, cryolipolysis freezes fat cells
without affecting other body cells, between 20 – 40 % of the fat cells in the treated area die in a natural way and dissolve over time. RADIO FREQUENCY: tightens the skin in treated area. DERMOLOGY: Vacuum skin rolling is used to reduce cellulite. Furthermore, where standard liposuction requires a lot of vigorous exercise to metabolise the fat cells after the procedure, the 3D treatment gives outstanding results without any exercise at all. We are commonly asked if the procedure is painful. It’s possible to experience some mild discomfort directly after each treatment, however there’s very
