IN THE SUMMERTIME
This is it now, it’s June. And we all know what that means – summertime! Yep, the 21st June is officially Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year, which means we can finally look forward to consistent days of sun, clear skies, and a good old British BBQ. It also means the days can only get shorter from here and we’re on our way back to dark evenings, but let’s not be pessimistic. It’s set to be a scorcher this year (not that we should be surprised with two heatwaves already so far – one of which was in February), so with any luck we’ll be grateful of the cool dip into autumn. And yes, we’re mentioning autumn, but you know as well as we do that it’ll be here in the blink of an eye. In fact,

opportunity to have a go yourself. Got a spare couple of hours? There are plenty of places in York that would love to have you on board. The 11th-17th June is Diabetes Week, and Diabetes UK have a whole bunch of ideas on how you can get involved. While they have a full fundraising pack on their website, and suggestions on ways of raising money, they’ve made it clear that the most important thing about Diabetes Week is for more people to talk about the disease through the hashtags #talkaboutdiabetes and #diabetesweek. Donate your fluids and potentially save a life on the 14th June (although you don’t have to wait for that day, obviously) because it’s World Blood Donor Day. Did you know that this particular date
before we know it, it’ll be Chri—no. Too far. So, ‘what can we do this summer then?’ we hear you ask. You’ll have to flick to our Events Diary for that (hint: lots of things). But it’s worth bearing in mind that there are actually some pretty important days and weeks in June. While we’re talking of important days, this is your one month reminder: Father’s Day is the 19th June. You’re welcome. If you want to make a difference this month, then you’re in luck – because there are lots of themed awareness days and weeks to inspire you. First of all, there’s Volunteers’ Week from the 1st-7th June. Not only are these seven days a celebration of the fantastic work that volunteers do throughout the country, but they also give you a cracking SARAH

was chosen because it was the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the man who discovered the ABO blood group system? There you go – you learn something new every day. Finally, it’s the 16th year of Recycle Week – which aims to encourage everyone to recycle more and better understand the benefits. We’ve all seen the horrific videos and images of sea creatures becoming trapped in bits of floating plastic. And so while a lot of damage has already been done, if we all work that little bit harder to recycle then we might just get our world back on track. So there we have it – June in a nutshell. Make sure you let us know what you’ve been getting up to through our Facebook and Twitter accounts @LocalLinkYork. Have a wonderful June and we’ll see you in July! The Your Local Link Team x

YORK LIFE
AND LIFE IN GENERAL
Need. It’s a funny old thing, isn’t it? I was mulling this over while waiting for the Number 4 the other day, when I realised I urgently needed either an umbrella or a cagoule, followed by a cup of tea in front of a log fire. In June. So much for global warming. There are all sorts of things that we know we really need. A good night’s sleep, for instance. A roof over our heads. Exercise, fruit and vegetables, fresh air and functional domestic applicances. Decent coffee. A refund from HMRC. That sort of thing. However, life is rarely that straightforward. Because once you venture out, you very soon realise that you need all kinds of things that you never previously knew you needed. Take my favourite place, Wombell’s, for instance. This is a veritable treasure trove of Things You Never Knew You Needed. The 19th century measuring tape in a fetching leather case, for instance, which my dresser drawer definitely needed. Or the ancient black telephone which will work at some point in the future, once I can afford to restore it. The long-case clock sans pendulum was definitely a Need. As were the oak chest, the stuffed dog, the
wine funnel, the two corner cupboards, the three wine tables and the four wastepaper baskets. Not to mention the grape scissors (every house needs a pair) and the lobster picks. Some things are so good that you need to buy them twice (knife boxes, for instance). The fur coat, meanwhile, is what everyone needs while waiting for the Number 4 on a cold May day. If this sounds unreasonable, then bear in mind all the items that I didn’t need at Wombells. A life-sized metal stag statue, two figurines of harvesters, and a lute, for instance. On second thoughts: I do perhaps need a lute. Ah well, there’s always next time. However, it’s not just second-hand items which suddenly become Wholly Necessary. No: there are certain shops which specialise in Things You Never Knew You Needed. Lakeland is a prime example. I know this, because I have just made a bulk donation to charity, in the form of a pizza stone, a silicone chocolate mould, a set of specialist bags for freezing soup and sauces, a set of Magic Balls for cleaning decanters, and four pop-up contraptions to prevent flies from landing on summer picnics. Well, I
needed them at the time. Or I thought I might do, when I was overwhelmed with excitement in the shop. That said, I do use their wonderful comes-in-threesizes plastic bags and their bag-clips on a more or less daily basis, which in fact proves that Lakeland is a shop that satisfies all Needs.
COLUMNIST
If you can bear to venture out of York, IKEA falls into a similar category, thanks to its Marketplace. On my last visit, I realised I needed a hard-boiled egg slicer, and my teenagers realised they needed a lint roller. It was worth the trip to Leeds.
Powder might fall into this category. As might yet another tin of silver polish, to add to the ones that are already proliferating in my under-stairs cupboard, but which I can never find.
Back on home turf, the Middle Aisle of Acomb Lidl is definitely to be avoided if you don’t want to discover that you really do need a TENS machine, a blood pressure monitor, a juicer, a steamer, a cordless drill and another spare duvet. Of course, Barnitts is our own special shrine to Things You Never Knew You Needed. I can only think that Nicholas Rowe was in the Barnitts laundry department when he wrote: “My beating heart bounds with exulting motion”. As a result of said department, I possess a delightfully decorative collection of starch, old-fashioned soap suds, woolly wash, and an array of stain removers. Happily, the Barnitts laundry shelves merge seamlessly into the furniture polishing and sink-unblocking shelves, both of which offer further scope for anyone on the look-out for items they didn’t realise they were lacking. I think Jeyes Deodorising Bin
Rachel Ragg
I hardly dare to mention books at this point, as I own more than a few of them. Suffice it to say I only this week realised that I have always needed an old copy of How to Build a Caravan, while being side-tracked by the charity book shelf in Tesco. It sits very well next to The Manly Art of Knitting - another unforeseen Need, satisfied courtesy of the British Heart Foundation shop. The same shop may also have satisfied my previously unknown need for an interesting piece of fabric (to be filed away in the “may come in useful one day” cupboard) and an empty Stilton jar. I fear this may make me sound like a hoarder. But when I look at my bulging bags heading charity-shop-wards, I feel quite relieved by the fact that I have not only satisfied my own compulsion to buy Things I Never Knew I Needed, but I’m helping other people to satisfy theirs, too. And there’s nowt wrong with that.

Horoscopes 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
A lovely month for younger female members of the sign who are looking for love. The good news is, I think you’re going to find it, although not necessarily from where you expect it to come from! For all members of the sign, June is a healing period – and you can interpret that word “healing” any way you want, whether it is in a medical sense or an emotional one. There is a favourable financial outlook for all Geminis, but it’s got to be said that selfemployed males are likely to benefit the most, especially between the 14th and 22nd when some important deal or contract falls into place. Career-orientated females might
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL After the events of May you should be pleased to know that June is a much gentler month, with the accent on developing new friendships and building a few bridges where they need to be built. Parent/child relationships become a lot more harmonious, and indeed for some, there could be some very good news concerning pregnancies and new birth within the family.
LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG
You’ll be working hard to generate a greater degree of domestic security, and should be successful in the quest. This will lead to greater emotional harmony and boost your confidence in all sorts of different ways. Having said that, there are certain areas in which you must be patient, and trying to push something through when it’s not quite ready could cause a set-back.

have to wait until the last days of the month before some of their ambitions fall into place, and only then after a few frustrating delays and disappointments. Travel aspects are favourable throughout June, but hey, it’s the season of summer holidays, so that might be the extent of it. Having said that, there could be some interesting links developing with people living in the south of the country, especially in the London area. On the subject of travel, a word of warning here to very old people driving very old cars… drive carefully, and unless you’ve got 20/20 vision, try to avoid driving at night.
VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
Not a good month for doing dodgy impulsive deals, especially if you’re contemplating spending a big chunk of cash. Take your time, read the small print, and be cautious. Two areas of concern here are transport and travel. In the latter days of the month you will have to make an awkward and unpopular decision, and because you can’t please everyone, you might just as well please yourself!

LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT
Anything and everything to do with property should have some relevance this month. Career advancement might necessitate some degree of relocation, and for romance to bloom you must go to the mountain rather than waiting for the mountain to come to you. Even though you don’t like gambling, this is where you might have to take a few calculated risks.

A STROLOGIST
Job offers and opportunities come your way this month, but to accept means taking a step into the unknown. I hope that you do take that step – not for any financial gain, but because it represents movement away from some old pain and anguish towards a better and brighter future. You might not know where you’re going, but you know where you’ve been – which is enough for now. 22ND NOV - 21ST DEC
SAGITTARIUS
In some ways June is a bit of an anti-climax after earlier events this year, and you’ll find it hard to slip back into familiar old routines. This could cause inner ferments of frustration and tension that bubble beneath the surface – and this is where you need to keep them! For the sake of emotional and domestic harmony, you need to go in search of inner calm and patience. 22ND DEC
CAPRICORN - 19TH JAN
Single girls beware. Partners are like buses. You miss one, then wait ages for the next – then two or three come along at the same time. On a positive note we could say that you are spoiled for choice, but a negative perspective points out that you have to make choice between Tom, Dick and Harry, which for a Capricorn is not an enviable position to be in. 20TH JAN
AQUARIUS - 18TH FEB
A mood of fresh starts and new beginnings! This sounds good, but it brings the temptation to be impulsive, which is not
such a good thing. If you’ve got some new ideas bubbling away, look at them carefully, do some research and careful planning, and make sure the head rules the heart before getting out your credit or debit card.
PISCES
19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
We are likely to see the death of obstacles and obstructions, which have stood in your way for a very long time. This brings an inner sense of justice, and creates a mood of freedom and liberty. You will be able to cut through red tape, sort out any legal disputes to your advantage, and push open doors that have been traditionally closed to you. This is an on-going situation!

The first week of the month brings a pay nothing more degree of frustration and tension when other people close to you fail to recognise for 12 months... your dreams and desires. Between the 7th INTEREST FREE* and the 14th you go through an intensely busy period in which all your energies will be focused on financial priorities. Some good news during the latter half of the month when you get a green light on future plans.
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
A good money month, especially for those who have a business relationship with emotional partners. There is the birth of new hope and ambition on the work scene, and if this brings an element of change into your life, it is change you have worked hard to create. The first half of the month sees plans being made, and the second half sees them being put into action.

to meet you
How do you define who someone is, and what they mean to you? Well, you work out what kind of cheese they are, of course. I used to turn my nose up at mild cheddar. It’s not refined enough. Too safe. Uncontroversial. Basically just a bit boring. But I’ll happily eat it, and it’s the backbone of many good cheese dishes. I shouldn’t be so quick to judge. In fact, the Wheel of Cheese System taught me as much about myself and my preconceived ideas as it did of other people. It all started on a Saturday night in with one of my closest gal pals. Gossiping can get out of hand quicker than you can say ‘melted brie’. No topic is off limits on girls night, and after putting the world to rights, we got personal. We started slagging off the contents of our friends’ fridges. I have a close mate, whom I love - but they buy mild cheddar. When I found out I was obviously shocked and disappointed. I knew that someone, somewhere was buying it, I just didn’t know it was one of *MY* friends. Things escalated and by the end of the night we were categorising personalities through the theory of cheese.
It’s been over a year now and the Wheel of Cheese System is here and it’s here to stay. If I make a new friend, my pal Claire wants to know what kind of cheese they are. And you can bet your last slice of cheddar I’ve already worked it out, too.
APPLYING THE THEORY
Cheese isn’t immune to the structures of society, what class it’s typically associated with or how it performs under pressure. Some people marginalise cheese based on their own experience with it previously. And like people: all cheeses should be respected, regardless of your opinion on them. Don't panic about your own cheese diagnosis, I’m generally fond of all cheeses - no soft centre is too squishy for me, no stinky blue is too strong. All cheeses are equal, just not the same. Oh and you don’t just get to pick your favourite cheese. That’s not the game, okay?
PARMESAN
I am a parmesan. So is Claire. We are generally liked, quite strong, but occasionally we’re a bit much for a room of people - we fill the air with our own distinctive vibe. It pushes other
COLUMNIST
Krystal’s gems cheeses out. We’re bothloud, versatile and consiered grown up for our age. And what one person thinks of a cheese, could differ entirely to another. We’re not everyone’s cup of tea.
BRIE
The softer cheeses are kind, gentle souls, loved by many, but sometimes come across as a bit sickly. They’re flexible though, and often make life in the kitchen and life in the real world easier for everyone.
MOZZARELLA
Mozzarella is nice. It’s a lot more interesting after a glass of wine or some devine intervention like being thrown on a pizza - because ultimately it complements other flavours with grace and doesn’t steal the show. Mozzarella is better in a crowd, it’s not a stand alone cheese.
MATURE CHEDDAR
Salt of the earth, good to be around, everybody-wants-it-at-their-house kind of cheese. Mature cheddar won’t win awards, it won’t be considered fancy, but it’s loved by the masses. It’s got depth, but not enough to make you wish you hadn’t started talking to it at a party.
BLUE CHEESE A controversial cheese. I love a stinking bishop - I love it more when I see other people turning its nose up at it. Blue cheese people are undiluted, strong, they might sting you - but it’s worth it. I feel special because I can tolerate them. Think of that mate that a lot of your other friends don’t like, but you defend them to the death anyway. You like this person even though it says more about you than them. You have an acquired taste. You love the unusual, special people of the world. Like all theories, there are flaws and no definitive answers to what cheese someone actually is, because it depends on the circumstance in which you come across them. MUSIC TO YOUR EARS
From classical to R’n’B; pop to rock; metal to rap – music is a huge part of most people’s lives. And here in York we’re very lucky to have the National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) on our doorstep. The NCEM, based in a medieval church, is home to jazz, world, folk, and early music concerts – as well as the internationally-acclaimed York Early Music Festival. As well as hosting regular musical performances from both national and international musicians, they also offer opportunities to get involved – including their Cuppa and a Chorus programme and I Can Play!, which helps deaf children to enjoy making music. Oh, and they also hold movie nights! Their Ghosts and Whispers show on Sunday 9th June brings both music and film together through the Brothers Quay’s new film along with accompaniment from pianist Clare Hammond. And it doesn’t stop there – the National Centre of Early Music are also the home of two major competitions: the Young Artists Competition and the NCEM Young Composers Award.
n So if you want to explore this fascinating venue and experience the culture of early music, visit www.ncem.co.uk to find out more, or call the box office on 658338.
BOSS THE FOSS Welcome to the River Foss Society – a friendly group of people who are all committed to improving the River Foss and its conservation. The Society embark on regular walks, talks and visits – and make sure that the entire 28-mile Foss Walk from the river’s source up to its junction with the Ouse is maintained. Members of the River Foss Society hold several yearly litter picks to help manage this natural environment – and they aim to improve the river for everyone by helping to prevent floods and pollution. So far, the Society have opened up rights of way along the river; held talks and exhibitions to raise awareness of the Foss; organised group visits and established nature reserves. Not only this but they regularly promote and support projects such as the planned reinstatement of a footbridge and improving water quality. Of course, you don’t have to become a member to help out with the litter picking – that help is always appreciated. But if you do decide to become a member then you’ll receive a copy of the Society’s quarterly newsletter, as well as getting priority booking for events with limited numbers. You’ll also receive details on regular outings and a full programme of walks.
n For more information on the River Foss Society and how to join, visit www. riverfosssociety.co.uk, or email info@riverfosssociety.co.uk.

WANDERER WALKING WITH THE
HUSTHWAITE TO COXWOLD AND BACK ALONG BEACON BANKS
This is a short and straightforward circular walk of about 4½ miles. Starting in the unspoilt village of Husthwaite it follows a disused railway line to picture postcard Coxwold. It then returns pass Newburgh Priory and its large lake before taking a quiet byway to the top of Beacon Banks. From the return route along the top of the bank there are fine views north to the White Horse above Kilburn and, in good visibility, south to the distant towers of York Minster.

Ignore a footpath and lane to the left to pass the lake of Newburgh Priory and then the house entrance, also on the left. Stay on the wide verge on the left side of the road which begins to go gradually uphill.

Cross a small bridge then turn right down the old railway line footpath opposite the old station house. Continue for over a mile, the path narrowing after a while then passing through two gates where you go straight ahead. Ignoring a path to the left you eventually emerge onto a tarmac road opposite the old Coxwold station.

Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing.
THIS MONTH: CONSTANTINE THE GREAT (PART 2: THE WARRING YEARS)
Last month we peeled back the layers of history to expose the early life of that chap who is immortalised in bronze outside the Minster, Constantine the Great. Now, we pick up where we left off and look at his later years, in which he did war. Lots of war.
TENSIONS RISING So... there’s local lad Constantine, in York, having just declared himself Emperor of the Western Roman Empire. And there’s Galerius, Emperor of the Eastern Empire, a bit miffed at Constantine for having done so without approval. In fact, Constantine’s self-appointment caused massive unrest throughout the Empire, leading to clashes. Constantine, meanwhile, stayed in York, seemingly happy to let all the trouble he had caused play out without his involvement. To keep himself busy he finished what he and his recently deceased father had started: pushing the Picts further into Scotland. What fun!
He also visited Gaul, modern day France, as that was technically his as well, and did yet more fighting against the Franks. During this time Constantine worked on his public image by returning to the Christians lands and goods that had previously been taken from them, and improving roads throughout Britain, France, and Spain. He was becoming increasingly popular.
HEAD OF THE PACK In the following years Constantine made uneasy peace with the other leaders of the Empire. However, an attempt on his life led to the crumbling of the Tetrarchy; the system by which four men ruled. Maximian was killed for plotting the assassination, and in 311 CE Galerius died of an illness. This left Maxentius, the other ruler in the West, alone in Rome. Using Maxentius’ unpopularity against him, Constantine marched his army into Italy, capturing city after city, until he reached Rome. Maxentius brought his army out to meet him, and the two sides

famously met at The Milvian Bridge. Here’s where it starts to get weird. According to legend, Constantine dreamt that the Christian God had urged him to paint the symbols of Chi Ro on his soldiers shields, the first two letters of ‘Christ’ in Greek. This he did, and his army triumphed against Maxentius, who was drowned in the Tiber river under the crush of his fleeing troops. Constantine pushed into Rome and was welcomed by the locals.
EAST IS EAST In 313 he met with Eastern ruler Licinius at Milan, to sign famous Edict of Milan. The treaty granted full toleration to the Christian faith, which was growing in popularity in the West. The two parted on relatively good terms, and the two halves of the Empire were at peace. For a bit. You see, in 320 Licinius decided to start mistreating Christians, and also (apparently) attempted to have Constantine assassinated. What resulted was one of the biggest
Bespoke Design Manufacture Instal ation
civil wars the Roman Empire had ever seen, with East versus West. Looking back, it was easy to see how Licinius represented the old pagan ways, especially considering he employed pagan Goth mercenaries; while Constantine represented the new ways, of Christianity. After several huge battles, Constantine won and became the sole Emperor of a united Roman Empire. Licinius’ life was spared... right up until Constantine changed his mind and had him hanged. Oh, Constantine. You tease.
THE NEW ROME Now with the East under his control, he decided to build a new capital city. The Greek city of Byzantium was selected, as it had previously been rebuilt in the Roman fashion by another York Emperor, Septimius Severus (who is supposedly buried near Acomb). Constantinople was therefore founded in 324, which would later become modern day Istanbul.

Constantine then ruled to promote religious tolerance. Not only Christianity was legalised, but all other cults and sects. Basically, you could believe what you liked in Constantine’s Empire, and not suffer persecution. By the age of 40 Constantine was openly referring to himself as Christian, but had decided not to be baptised until on his deathbed. He was also the guy who stated that Sunday had to be a day of
rest for all citizens of the Empire. So it’s his fault B&Q is so busy on a Sunday morning. He died of an illness in 337, after continuing to strengthen the united Roman Empire’s boarders. With the toleration and promotion of Christianity, Constantine changed the face of Europe, and the world. In the century that followed his death, his Empire would start to crumble, starting with the withdrawal from where it all started for him; Britain. However, around the city that he founded in the East, the empire would continue, transforming into the Byzantine Empire. There, it was an honour for rulers to be declared ‘The New Constantine’.

Blow up the balloons and light the candles we’re celebrating Yorkbased cleaning company Domestic Divas’ 10-year anniversary. Back in June 2009, the team realised that no matter how many cleaning companies they tried, they just couldn’t find anyone that delivered the clean they were looking for. And so, Domestic Divas was born – with the aim to offer completely tailored services that met each individual client’s needs. They’re now a well-known and loved name in the York, Harrogate and Selby areas – and sometimes even further afield! What’s more, to celebrate their 10th

Local Last month I bemoaned the fact that the football season was coming to an end. By football I meant York City’s season finishing, forgetting there was still the closest Premier League title race in years – let alone the latter stages of the Champions League. In some ways I was quite pleased to see the end of York City’s second campaign at National League North level, despite Steve Watson’s side showing shoots of recovery. However, when I saw a tweet quoting that the final home game against Telford was a fantastic chance to equal our 11th place of last season, I had a similar sense of dread to when I heard Westlife were reforming and releasing new material. Someone recently asked me how York City have yet to get into the top 10 despite having a far superior budget and being a full-time professional team in a predominantly part-time league. It’s a bigger mystery than finding ‘H’ on Line of Duty, but I’m really hoping that in the next season it will all piece together. Though surely it’s not Ted. So, to the Champions League – which has been the most exciting in years. So many comebacks, and I don’t mean Man United’s papering-over-the-cracks effort at PSG. To think some United fan

I think Maureen from the BBC’s late 90s programme Driving School would be better at the wheel. I was never convinced by this idealistic notion that their manager has to have breathed in the same room as Sir Alex Ferguson and have Man United ‘DNA’. If that’s the case why wasn’t Mick Hucknall interviewed for the job? Their supporters can’t really argue that money’s too tight to mention with Alexis Sanchez on £500,000 per week, but clearly they are lightyears away from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City. Not that City fared much better than their local rivals when it came to Europe’s elite competition; they got so near yet so VAR. Liverpool did the unthinkable when they beat Barcelona 4-0 to overturn a 3-0 first leg tie after which Luis Suarez said he wouldn’t celebrate on his return to Anfield. Fair play to him sticking to his word. That wasn’t the end of the English comeback kings when Spurs overcame a 3-0 aggregate score with 45 mins left to play to cement their place in an all-English final on June 1st. It’s hard to say which was the better comeback – it’s Moura less even in that respect.

news ON YER BIKE
It’s fair to say that York’s pretty big on cycling. From the Sky Ride to Tour De Yorkshire, and the many exciting and scenic cycling routes throughout the city, there are plenty of reasons to put foot to pedal and hit the energy-efficient roads. Whether you’re a confident and advanced cyclist or an enthusiastic beginner, there are also plenty of community groups to get you moving. The York Bike Belles lead regular social rides as well as offering maintenance workshops and bike loans; York Tandem Club help people with disabilities to enjoy a stunning countryside ride; and Get Cycling CIC focus on promoting cycling for leisure, transport, health and wellbeing, and the environmental benefits. And here’s something else to get those wheels spinning: Gallivant is a new cycling marketplace for people who love a good go on their bikes.
GADGET GUIDE
KITSOUND BOOMBAR+ BLUETOOTH SPEAKER You’ve probably heard of KitSound – they’ve been making speakers, headphones, and more for quite a while now. And they’ve added a new metallic collection to their Boom range of Bluetooth speakers. The Boombar+ keeps your music playing for up to 20 hours before it’ll need a charge. And don’t worry about anything interrupting your music, like a pesky phone call, because it supports hands-free call handling. n £40.00 from www.kitsound.co.uk
Kickstart This...
We check out a gadget currently seeking funding on www.Kickstarter.com
It’s not pretentious, nor is it exclusively for selfproclaimed ‘cyclists’ – it’s just got lots of good stuff to make your ride more exciting. Founders Chris and Ben explain “We are not lycra-clad weekend warriors. We are two dads who love going places by bike, and want to share that love with a wider audience. We have scoured the cycling community for great products from independent suppliers, as well as finding ideas and inspiration [for] adventures to go on, places to visit by bike and tips and suggestions for getting you and your family cycling more.” So, what are you waiting for? Get online and check it out for yourself: n www.gallivant.bike
YOU’D BETTER BRIE-LIEVE IT We reckon this Kickstarter campaign is grater than any other. Honestly – it’s the brie’s knees. Introducing Fromaggio, the world’s first smart, automatic home cheesemaker. Yes, you read that right. Because a home cheesemaker isn’t enough. It has to be automatic – and smart. And it’s bloody all of those things. This incredible invention is capable of making anything from soft to hard, lactose-free and vegan cheeses; as well as yoghurts and tofu. And wait – it gets feta (sorry, the puns are almost as tempting as the camembert). All you have to do is download the app onto your phone, find the recipes you want (such as the perfect parmesan) and control the Fromaggio machine to do all the hard work for you.
Not only is this a fun gadget, and an absolute dream come true for any cheese lover, but it can also help keep the costs down when you go shopping. In fact, it’s estimated to save you over half the amount spent per pound of cheese compared to that of shop-bought equivalents. We know what you’re thinking: “Shut up and take my money”. YOUR HOME & GARDEN
NIGHT (AND DAY) FEVER I have no idea what the weather will be doing as you read this, but as I write the sun is blasting through my open office window here at Monks Cross and I’m sure I can physically feel the winter blues ebbing from my system. It’s fair to say I’m a big fan of the summer, but the fine weather brings its own challenges and for some, myself included, the jump in pollen levels can be a real challenge as hay fever rears its ugly head. Now I know from speaking to a very good friend of mine in the medical profession that progress has been made in this area and there are some great new medications available. Some of these aim to further alleviate the symptoms of hay fever – and I understand that immunotherapy is now being trialled to prevent any reaction before it starts. “But what can the electrical retail sector offer?” I hear you ask.
ASK THE EXPERT MATT TODD
Well, brand new for this year, we’ve teamed up with Dyson in the hope of (indoors at least!) taking the fight to the pollen and making life more comfortable – and sleep, in particular, easier to come by. As well as the full range of stick cleaners, we’ll also be stocking the full range of Dyson fans and air purifiers. Some of which will actively remove even tiny pollen, dust and other allergens from the room by using HEPA filtration to capture 99.95% of the aforementioned particles that pass through it. When choosing plants for the garden, the main criteria we generally look for is colour, size and shape – but what about other aspects such as their sensory appeal? Including the most evocative of all: fragrance! Evolution has produced plants with scented flowers to attract pollinating insects, such as bees, but we are also able to enjoy their amazing scents. They have, over time, adapted to flower at different times of the year and times of day to best suit their insect friends – such as moths who are attracted to evening primrose or honeysuckle. As a gardener, you can take advantage of this by choosing scented plants to enjoy during every season, including pot plants and cut flowers that you can bring indoors. As with all the senses, fragrance can have a beneficial impact on both physical and mental health and could help to relieve depression and
stress. And research also shows that scent can help improve memory, focus and wellbeing. So by growing fragrant plants we are able to enjoy these benefits too. Fresh, citrus scents can help keep us mentally active and aid creativity; fruity fragrances can uplift and reinvigorate; floral scents can help reduce stress; and earthy smells can be comforting. When choosing scented plants, consider what desired effect you are going for. It could be the welcoming fragrance of roses or jasmine around an entrance; the relaxing scent of lavender in a seating area; or the heady, aromatic fragrance
of Mediterranean herbs filling the air on a warm summer’s evening. Shrubs such as Philadelphus (Mock Orange) or Syringa (Lilac) produce highly fragrant flowers, and are ideal for planting in borders or grow scented climbing plants such as Lonicera (Honeysuckle) or climbing roses over pergolas, arches or around doorways. Positioning plants with fragrant foliage, like lavender and herbs close to paths and seating areas, are also ideal – so when you brush against them or run your hand over them they’ll release beautiful aromas. So forget the scented candles and enjoy the simple pleasure of growing your own beautiful fragrant plants – and fill your garden with fragrance!

Strawberry Challenges It must be summer – because Poppleton Community Railway Nursery are holding their Summer Open Day on Saturday 1st June from 10am-4pm. You’ll be able to explore this unique nursery’s narrow gauge and model railways, as well as picking up summer bedding; vegetable plants, perennials, shrubs and alpines. If that wasn’t enough you’ll also discover stock plants suitable for hanging baskets and the Nursery’s very own cacti collection. It’s not just about the plants either – there will also be books, bric-abrac and craft stalls; plus you can treat yourself to a hot drink and a slice of homemade cake. If you can’t make this then don’t worry – the Nursery is open every Saturday in June after this from 10am-1pm for plant sales. And as we go into July there’ll be a fab opportunity to boost your flower beds with a Buy One Get One Free bedding plant sale on the 6th from 10am-4pm. n To find out more, visit www. poppletonrailwaynursery.co.uk or call 797623.
It’ll only be a few more weeks now before the strawberries are ready. Although strawberries can be effortlessly picked from the supermarket shelf any month of the year, picking the first berries in June is a special treat. As well as heralding the other summer fruits to follow, home-grown strawberries have a taste supermarket berries simply cannot match. Fully ripe, plump and with that special sun-soaked smell; this is an experience to look forward to and savour. Unfortunately, it’s an experience that requires a bit of effort as strawberries aren’t the easiest fruit to grow. Mostly it’s neglecting plants and failing to protect the fruit that causes disappointment. Probably the three most common problems are: old and stunted plants bearing small berries; mudsplattered and mould-covered fruit; and wildlife – both feathered and four-footed – stealing the harvest just as it ripens. KEEP IT UP Let’s begin with not neglecting the plants. Of all the berries, strawberries have the shortest plant life. It’s usually said that four years is the maximum a plant will produce a worthwhile harvest. Because of this, if you want regular crops, it’s best to maintain a mix of plants between one and four years old. This can be achieved by starting new plants every year, either

bought in or from runners. If you choose to use your own runners (baby plantlets thrown up from mature plants each summer) always take them from the youngest plants that are more likely to be disease-free. When setting out a new strawberry bed or tidying up an existing one, it’s also important to have plants that are well-spaced. Crowding leads to competition and smaller, often poorflavoured and pippy, berries. Half a metre isn’t too generous a distance between plants. This should be maintained throughout the life of a strawberry bed. Once cropping has finished, always cut back old growth to prevent plants becoming intertwined and straggly. RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY Preventing mud and mould damage is trickier. Mud on the berries is mainly caused by soil splash in torrential rain. Traditionally it was minimised by laying down straw – a practice I still follow. However, this has the downside of providing a habitat for slugs that’ll nibble ripening fruit. Rain also favours the development of grey mould or botrytis on berries. This can spread rapidly in damp weather, ruining a

Tony Chalcraft crop. Covering to exclude the rain is the only sure solution, but not practicable if you’ve got a lot of plants. GO WILD The other big problem is, of course, the wildlife that wants to share your bounty. Birds, especially blackbirds, are the worst culprits; but mice and other rodents may also gnaw berries. Birds can be kept off with netting, but it must be well-secured at ground level and strung tight to avoid pecking from above. Of course, you don’t have to grow strawberries in the soil. They do well in pots and containers or, even, so it’s claimed, in hanging baskets or those special multi-storey strawberry towers sometimes advertised in magazines. These growing methods will overcome some of the hazards I’ve mentioned, especially if you’re only aiming for a few fruit. Fending off birds is still likely to be a problem though, and there’ll be the extra hazard of watering. Too little and the plants will frazzle, too much and you’ll have insipid fruit. For these reasons I stick with soil cultivation, even if it can be a challenge.

CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
Q.
I’ve always had trouble with slugs and snails in my garden. Can you recommend some plants that are more resistant against these pests please?
Slugs and snails have a voracious appetite when they discover a tasty plant, however what they eat in one garden they will only nibble in another. Some plants, such as many hostas, are always a gourmet meal for slugs and snails – and are readily consumed. Others – especially those with hard textured, hairy or poisonous leaves – are often relatively ignored. Here is a selection of the most reliable slug- and snail-proof perennials for the garden. Allium Globemaster, which is magnificent for group planting, is a bulb that has arching strap-shaped leaves and huge spangled heads of deep violet flowers in early summer; and is loved by butterflies and bees. Aster Ester has bushy clumps of leafy, slender, branched stems and is topped by

broad heads of small pink, yellow-eyed daisies that flower in late summer and autumn. Bergenia Silberlicht has fleshy and shiny evergreen leaves that form a basal mound. Above which, in spring, erect stems rise bearing loose clusters of white flowers that age to pink. Corydalis Lutea has a mound of ferny, evergreen leaves, which are used by snails as a refuge but are rarely eaten. Slender racemes of tubular yellow flowers are borne from late spring to early autumn. Geranium Anne Folkard – there are few cranesbills that will scramble as freely as this one, with its dense blanket of deeply lobed yellow-green leaves and magenta flowers in summer and autumn. Helleborus Niger are clusters of saucershaped white flowers that turn pink with age from mid-winter to spring above the basal clump of divided, coarse-toothed, evergreen leaves. Rudbeckia Goldsturn – a cheery plant that ill bear a succession of dark-eyed, rich yellow daisies, which are good for cutting, from mid-summer to autumn.
Sedum Herbsfreude, also known as Autumn Joy, lures butterflies and bees with its deep pink autumn flowers, maturing copper red with greyish blue leaves.
Q.
Early summer is here again, so I’d like to plant summer plants and hanging baskets and planters to give colour throughout the season. Please could you give me some advice?
If it’s bedding plants you’re after, geraniums are still one of the best performers in borders, followed by bedding geraniums in rich reds, pinks, and whites. Bizzy Lizzies are now making a come-back after the trouble with mildew a few years ago. The colour range is immense, and grows very well in shade. Petunias are perfect for a full-sun garden, as are marigolds with their bright yellow, orange, and red flowers. Salvia and Antirrhinums are still old favourites for the lovely bright colours. Also, Lobelia and Alyssum are always good as ground cover colour.
BROWN’S NURSERIES
Chris Brown If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk or call Chris on 766266. Bedding plants that are good for planters and hanging baskets for summer have never been better than they are today. Non-stop Begonias and Trailing Begonias are in vogue, and with their big frilly flowers they will brighten any container. Fuchsias are like ballet dancer’s frocks, and work well in shade. The choice of trailing plants today is amazing: Trailing begonias, Million Bells, Centradenia, Bidens, Diasica, Felicia, Helichrysum Gold and Silver, all give you nicely coloured foliage. Trailing Geraniums will tolerate dry conditions and still produce lots of flowers. All the best with yours!

YOUR FAMILY
If you’re a pet owner, you’ll probably agree that your critters are more than just animals – they’re members of the family. And saying goodbye to them is one of the hardest things we ever have to do. Sadly, elderly and vulnerable people occasionally have to say goodbye to their furry friends earlier than they should, as they find themselves unable to look after them. Keep Your Pet is a joint venture between Age UK York and the RSPCA York,
Harrogate and District Branch, and exists to support vulnerable people in times of need. Run mainly by volunteers, the scheme has helped over 100 dogs and 20 cats through fostering, walking, carrying out vets visits, and more. As part of their bid to raise awareness and important funds, Keep Your Pet are presenting their Summer Extravaganza at Stockton-on-the-Forest Village Hall. This exciting event held on 29th June at 7.30pm offers entertainment from Generation Groove Concert Band, Community Chorus, and Stockton-onthe-Forest Choir. Tickets are £10 and are available from Stephen Marshall – call 07929 719286 or email stephen.marshall2@homecall. co.uk. Bring a picnic!

'Sup? At the ripe old age of 37 and a half, I have finally achieved something I never have before. No, I still can't drive (legally), and no, I'm still not allowed within 50 feet of Sophie Ellis-Bextor (legally). I'm talking about my living arrangements. You see, I now live alone. It's very exciting. From birth up until this point I've always had to suffer with cohabiters. From my parents and sister in the early years, to my ex-wife and children more recently, I've always lived with someone. There's always been... someone else there, with all their stuff, and their need for space and privacy. No more. AFTERMATH As revealed in last month's 'tell-all' column about my divorce and mental health problems, I moved out and got myself a rad flat. A bachelor pad. A man cave. A “knocking shop”, according to my mother. Either way, it's awesome and it's all mine. Which is weird, because I've never lived anywhere that’s been all mine. I can now wander around completely naked and not be assailed by calls of “Howard! My friends are here!”, or “Daddy! Our friends are here!”, or “Sir! Your neighbours have made complaints. Get dressed, or we will arrest you!”

Squares. But as well as enjoying a more casual attitude to clothing, I've also discovered that, for the first time ever, I'm quite house proud. Like, little old lady house proud.
PRIDE COMETH... Obviously, as a cool young gentleman with his finger on the pulsating hub of the zeitgeist, my flat is stocked with brilliant things. I can use my voice to switch on my TV, merely wink at my bin to make it open, and possess a cupboard in my kitchen that is perpetually cold; good for the storage of perishable goods. I'm also on the top floor, lending stunning views over Huntington and Heworth. By God, my breath is taken away daily. Then my kids came round and messed it all up.

They daubed chocolate handprints all over my walls, smeared jam into the hardwood floors, and deposited a treat into my swish toilet that refused to flush, no matter how many times I yanked. During their first sleepover, I found myself chasing after them, warning them not to crease the leather sofa, bang the sliding mirrors, or bounce on the memory foam mattress (doing so results in memory loss, FYI). Which was odd to me, because I honestly never cared all that much back in the family home. I never liked living in a dump, so would always tidy and clean up after them. But should ketchup be squirted on the carpets... meh. It was just the floor, in a house I shared with others, that never really felt like mine. CASTLE HOWARD But my flat, my fortress of solitude, is different. All this stuff, this is mine. I and I alone chose the plates I have, instead of simply nodding along in
IKEA as my ex-wife placed a box into the trolley I was pushing. 'Twas I, Howard the 'Single and Very Ready to Mingle' who selected that house plant, not because it “looked lovely” but because it looked mighty! After my kids went home, I blitzed the flat with my new mop, new bleach spray, and new robot vacuum cleaner. After several hours, and following several weird and oddly erotic conversations with Google (“Hey Google. What are you wearing?”), the place was mine again: sterile, empty, and quiet. Home. Of course, the kids will be back. And obviously, chocolate isn't going to fall out of favour with them any time soon. Hopefully my house pride will chill somewhat over the coming months, and I'll come to re-accept a little bit of the chaos that parenting involves. Until then, I'll be hand-delivering a leaflet I've written to my neighbours, entitled 'The Joys of Nudism, Post Divorce'. Want a copy? Tough.

Care to Share This June 10th-16th is Carers Week 2019, an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring. As well as acknowledging the difficulties unpaid carers may face, it also helps people who may not think of themselves as carers to identify as such. And this year, Carers Week will help to bring carers together to get connected. So what is a ‘carer’? Carers are defined by Carers Week as: “someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, substance misuse issue, or who needs extra help as they grow older”. This could be anything from providing the person in need with emotional support
to administering medicine; financial support to physical help; and more. Millions of people throughout the UK fit this description and don’t realise – whether they’re caring for their partner, relative, friend or neighbour. And it’s important that they get the right support and advice to help manage their own wellbeing. York Carers Centre has made a pledge on the Carers Week website and that is to connect carers to each other and to information, and to support with caring. Our pledge says: “York Carers Centre pledge to help unpaid carers from ages five upwards in York to find the support that they need. We give free help to carers living or caring for someone in York, and support can be given over the phone or in person. We offer groups, activities, benefits and rights advice and emotional support. For Carers Week we’re taking young carers on a flying trip and adult carers on a boat cruise down the River Ouse – we’re hoping the sun will shine for us! We’re also running a range of pop-up stalls and advice sessions in the
Darley Funeral Directors
community.” How do I get involved? You can help to raise the profile of caring by running an event – that could be in your workplace, local GP surgery, or a coffee morning. Or something else! Whatever you decide to do, you can register your event on www.carersweek.org to receive a free pack of materials that will help you to promote it. You can also spread the word on social media with the hashtag #carersweek, or show your support with a pledge on the Carers Week website. n I think I might be a carer… where can I get support? Fortunately, there are many sources for
support – from financial help to managing your wellbeing: • Carers Trust – www.carers.org • York Carers – www.yorkcarerscentre.co.uk • Carers UK – www.carersuk.org • Carers Week – www.carersweek.org Of course, if you’re struggling with your mental or physical health as a result of caring and feel you need extra support, see your GP.

This month our resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, is telling us why we should wear suncream every day, and which one she’d recommend. Sun damage doesn’t just happen when you’re on holiday, it happens on cloudy days, it happens on rainy days, it happens every single day. Even HEV light emitted from your phone, tablet or laptop can cause you to age prematurely! That’s why leading skin experts are always advising people to wear sunscreen every day. For those of you who cringe at the thought of applying a greasy white sheen on your face each morning: think again. Heliocare 360 has a range of specially formulated creams, foundations and gels that suit individual skin types and leave you looking fresh and feeling protected. Back On Your Feet Welcome to The Orthotic Works – the place to take your aching feet for an effective resolution. By bringing your feet back into proper alignment, their customised orthotics (biomechanical medical appliances that sit in your shoes like insoles) reduce stress and strain on your entire body – and work on your feet similarly to how glasses work on your eyes. In fact, you’d probably be surprised as to how many problems can be caused by foot pain. After all, they support your
to get Cassie Northam back on her feet: “After ten years of being unable to jog due to intense foot pain, and at least ten specialist visits, I visited here. I have now done ten jogs pain free. You are such experts. Thank you.” And Caroline Elizabeth bought some custom-made insoles from the team at The Turriff Show. She says: “I had been walking round the show all day
and I was in agony, my feet felt like they were burning up! As soon as I put insoles in my shoes it was like walking on air, been using them for nearly two months now and the difference is amazing, I can now walk for miles without discomfort. Thank you so much.” n For more information on The Orthotic Works, and to find out how they could help you, visit www. theorthoticworks.co.uk or call 620120.
What’s up, Doc? Your wedding is one of the biggest days of your life – and you’ll surely want to look your very best. But having a brand new designer gown will likely cost a penny as pretty as you! That is, unless you go through Bridal Reloved. The award-winning bridal boutique chain specialising in preloved and sample, highend, designer wedding dresses has come to Micklegate, York. Owner of the boutique, Elizabeth Matfin is delighted to bring the chain to York. She told us: “Bridal Reloved helps couples spend less on their wedding without compromising on design, style and class, which is why we only sell top designers. We currently have dresses by Jenny Packham, Maggie Sottero, Ian Stuart, Justin Alexander and Claire Pettibone to

entire body – so what could start as a mild pain in your foot could turn into knee, hip, or even back pain. From shin splints to calluses; and bunions to arthritis, The Orthotic Works could help. And plenty of people agree. Liz James discovered The Orthotic Works at the Ideal Home Show in 2015: “It’s the best money I’ve ever spent. I’ve been virtually pain free from calcium spurs that were making my life a misery. I wish I’d found you years ago,” she says. The Orthotic Works were also able

Elizabeth added: “We have dresses to suit all ages, shapes and sizes and my ultimate aim is to help my brides find the dress of their dreams and have a relaxed and enjoyable experience at the same time.” n To find out more about Bridal Reloved, or to begin the search for your dream dress, visit www. bridalreloved.co.uk or call 331541.
Want to see a doctor but don’t want to wait? Can’t afford regular private healthcare but like the benefits of seeing a GP on the same day? Well Doc-OneStop might just be your answer. They’re a York-based private clinic that work with Whitworth Chemists to provide same-day consultations seven days a week. They aim to treat an impressive 96% of the conditions that they see and will assess anyone aged over 18 – even tourists and residents not yet registered with the NHS. So, how does it work? Well, the actual ‘doctor’ bit is done online via a video link, a healthcare practitioner, and clever technology. This combination allows remote measuring of your heart and lung sounds, and full view of your ears, nose and throat. As well as offering
a walk-in service they also operate as a clinic, and can therefore supply medicines. They also offer a Test ‘n’ Treat service, where Doc-OneStop’s health practitioners can review a number of ailments without you needing to speak to a doctor. These can include (but are not limited to) emergency and oral contraceptives, sore throat, eye and urinary infections, and inhalers for the treatment of asthma. Doc-OneStop can also provide medical advice referrals and sick notes. n If you’re interested in giving this unique and convenient service a try, check them out at www.doc-onestop. co.uk, or call them on 0330 838 9880.
