We’ve been waiting for this one. An extra Bank Holiday for Her Majesty The Queen’s Jubilee, the longest day of the year and plenty of sunshine, are set to make June a month to be reckoned with. York will come alive with world-class speakers, exhibitions, music and film thanks to the York Festival of Ideas, and for those of you with little ones, there’s the perfect excuse to get outdoors and enjoy nature as it’s National Children’s Gardening Week. For ideas on what to do with your mini gardeners, turn to page 32. At the time of reading, York Spring Fair should be coming alive on York Racecourse, and
the flowers have burst into beautiful bloom, adding pops of colour across York’s magnificent streets. It’s a wonderful month to live in York, and we’ve got everything you need in this mag to help you make the most of it. Have a good one! The YLL Team

A York business is to donate 10% of profits to charity from their new candle range. Born of Botanics, originally The Little Yorkshire Candle Co, are launching a new collection called The Memories Collection. The collection features seven scents that prompt the reminiscence of childhood with scents ranging from Grandpa’s Garden, Cloudgazing and Beachcombing. All the scents transport you back to the joys of the days gone by and are 100% naturally made using a blend of soy, coconut and beeswax. The candles retail for £20 with 10% of all the sales from the collection going to to Dementia UK, as the launch centres around making memories with loved ones. Store owner, Alex Hall, said: ”We

Ebor Court praises their local GP practice A Local York care home have thanked their GP practice after its ‘lifeline’ support during the pandemic by gifting a hamper. Sharon Conarty, Ebor Court Care Manager, said: “We want to say a big thank you to Dr James, Dr Jennings, Dr Anderton, Nurse Kirsty McArdle and all
of the surgery staff for their help and hard work over the last couple of years.” “The dedication and professionalism of the team at The Old Forge helped to lighten our workload at a time when we knew they were also very stretched.” Andrea Lonsdale, Receptionist at The Old Forge GP practice responded to the generous gift, she said: “The past couple of years have been challenging for us, and for so many other practices, so it was lovely to be appreciated.” “I thought the hamper was a wonderful gesture, it was beautifully presented and we all enjoyed it very much”.
Are you passionate about bonsais or looking for advice about your bonsai needs? Then this is the club for you! A small group of bonsai enthusiasts are looking for new members to join them. Any level of bonsai experience is welcome, including complete beginners. Meeting on the third Monday of every month at Wigginton Recreation Hall. Either bring your own tree to work on or come along and get advice from other members. Annual membership costs £15, and £2 on arrival monthly which includes tea and biscuits. Friends for life!

If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, then the Friends of Rowntree Park are always looking for volunteers to help out in their gardening sessions which take place three times a week. You don't have to be an experienced gardener, and there are a wide range of jobs to be done. The sessions run on Mondays at 9.30am, Thursdays at 10am and Fridays at 9.30am. HOROSCOPES Gemini Instead of taking three steps forwards and four steps back, June brings new energy which allows you
CANCER
21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
Quite a busy month where careers, jobs, and businesses are concerned, and not without some success and fiscal reward. And yet, it is also a reflective month when you look back over the years, reviewing some of your choices and decisions, and wondering what might have happened had you chosen different pathways. This is not maudlin nostalgia, but more a case of clinical review and introspection.
21ST MAY - 20TH JUNE

to take three steps forwards and only one step back – and that’s got to be seen as a major achievement! Relationships with younger people in the family become stronger (and more harmonious, which may be
especially important if there have been any areas of conflict and dissent) and a younger male personality will have a significant influence over your thoughts and actions, especially between the 16th and 25th. A little
bit of financial belt-tightening may be advisable towards the month’s end, (er… join the club!) and there should be some encouraging news in the pipeline with regard to anything and everything to do with health.

JUL - 22ND AUG
Potentially a tense and awkward few weeks in affairs of the heart when partners and potential partners are unclear about what they want and where they’re coming from. Leo males seem to suffer more in this respect than the ladies: no cold showers demanded here, but you’re well within your rights to demand a bit of honesty and respect. Certainly a lot of tension in relationships with big age gaps.

You might not be 100% happy with your lot, but I’d ask you to look back over the last few years and recognise just how much progress you have made in this period, how much you have learned and how much stronger you have become. Use this strength now to maintain your present course, don’t rock any boats, and exercise some patience when it comes to making future plans.
SEPT - 22ND OCT
There can be a huge gulf between how we see ourselves and how other people see us, but throughout June, this gulf narrows considerably and by month’s end everyone has a slightly different view of who you are – including you! On a very parochial level, some nice travel aspects suggest the summer holidays, but probably the North Yorkshire Coast rather than North America.

OCT - 21ST NOV
June brings with it a certain freshness – the feeling of there being a clean slate, enabling you to get back to basics and dispense with many of life’s messy complications. This has got to bode well for you, especially if it encourages you to break free from old rules and restraints and become just a little bit more impulsive and uninhibited in your thinking – and also in your behaviour!
SAGITTARIUS 22
ND
NOV - 21ST DEC
There are times when you see problems where there are no problems, anticipate arguments which never materialise, and expect conflict where it doesn’t exist. June is one of those months, so just relax and take things as they come: be positive in your outlook and enjoy feelings of support and understanding! They are there for you in abundance, so see through the shadows of doubt.
CAPRICORN 22

DEC - 19TH JAN
A very good month where careers and jobs are concerned with some tangible reward offered between the 19th and 26th combined with an ongoing degree of recognition and appreciation from bosses and colleagues. On the home front, there is some extra degree of emotional security in the wind, but domestic routines may be interrupted by building projects and home improvements, especially towards the month’s end.
AQUARIUS 20
TH JAN - 18TH FEB If you are looking for insight and advice from other people, you need to be very open and candid when it comes to spelling out your needs and your feelings. This might not
be easy for you to do, but it’s got to happen if you want to support and understanding from other people that you need at this time in your life. Be like the little Dutch boy and pull your finger out… bite the bullet and be brave!
PISCES 19

FEB - 20TH MAR
Quite a calm month after the events of May, which is no bad thing if it helps you get your breath back and adjust to the reality of some new situations, especially where emotional friendships and alliances are concerned. Some interesting travel aspects around the 12th and 13th and some good opportunities if you’re looking for new jobs or promotions, although you might have to wait until the 26th, 27th and 28th for those aspects to materialise.
ARIES 21

YORK LIFE
SCORPIO 23
MAR - 19TH APRIL
Some areas of emotional tension flaring up between the 5th and the 17th when couples do not see eye to eye on financial priorities: male members of the sign (of a certain age) need to measure their energy levels and avoid taking on new work responsibilities at this time. Younger lady Arians can enjoy a sparkle of romance, especially during the middle of the month – but not without taking some risks!
TAURUS 20
TH
APR - 20TH MAY
June should be quite a gentle and laid back month – and you need to make sure that it jolly well is! The accent needs to be on maintaining existing energy levels (especially mental), and avoiding committing yourself to any new challenges. Some professional praise and appreciation coming your way throughout the month – but don’t let it go to your head!
Does GDPR still apply to the UK now we have left the EU? By David Scott, Head of Employment Law
Yes, the GDPR has been retained as the UK GDPR. It still imposes data protection obligations on business along with the Data Protection Act 2018. The key principles, rights and obligations remain the same. However, there are now rules on transfers of personal data between the UK and the EEA. Do you process Personal Data? Personal data is information that relates to an identified or identifiable individual, including customers, employees, business contacts and suppliers. Such information could include their name, phone number, address, CCTV images, IP address or a cookie identifier. You would be processing personal data if you collect, record, store, use, analyse, combine, disclose or delete their data. What do you have to do? If you are processing personal data, your business must: • Comply with the 7 key principles of the UK GDPR. • Only use the data for the reason it was collected, • Have one or more of the 6 lawful basis for processing the data. • Record why and how you are using the data. • Respect the 8 rights individuals have. • Have a privacy notice and bring that to the attention of the individuals. • Notify the Information Commissioner and individuals of certain data breaches. Your business will have to meet additional rules if it uses personal data for electronic marketing. Last year the Information Commissioner’s Office issued fines of over £3.7 million to companies. Whilst the government have announced that it plans to make changes to the UK GDPR, it may be years before they apply. Until then, it is your responsibility to comply with the UK GDPR. If you need any help or advice speak to one of our data protection experts on 01904 528200.

SHORT STORY OF THE MONTH
By Lindsay Walter The hedge beside the patio was full of birds calling. Dave savoured the sound, and the morning air. Already the sun was warming the flowers on the rockery - fragrant mignonette, arabis, candytuft. All the old favourites of his childhood. He sighed with pleasure. The car was parked tidily in the centre of the driveway, sparkling clean. Sunlight gleamed on the long bonnet, glinted from the chrome, made mirrors of the windows. Dave circled it with satisfaction. Not a blemish. The crunch of his steps on the gravel drew his eyes to the shine on his shoes. Good Lord! They’d come up a treat. The leather was as well-buffed as when his mother used to take care of him. He liked to be smartly turned out, and today his wife had done a particularly good job. He turned and looked up at the windows of the sleeping house with gratitude. He pressed the handle of the car door, but hesitated before getting in. He stood and watched the neighbour’s cat come mincing across the dewy lawn, until it
yowled and turned tail as it caught sight of him. Dave checked his watch. Might as well make a start – he didn’t want to be late. The drive was a pleasure. As often on car journeys, his thoughts turned to his youth, and he daydreamed. Long-ago cycle rides, miles away among the hills. Pleasant hours beside the canal, swapping fishing stories with other boys. Evening adventures in the park, dashing between the trees, hallooing to his gang, glorying in the dark. And however late he got home, always a welcome. His Dad’s eternal jest ‘Good “Eavens, Evans! What time do you call this?” and his Mum’s fond “You’d be late for your own funeral, you would!” And supper and telly and bed. Ever and always happy. Dave’s thoughts snapped to the present - a quick glance at the dashboard clock reassured him. He wondered again about the extra shine on his shoes. Why? What was so special about today? He couldn’t think. He looked around the car for inspiration. His suit jacket wasn’t on its hook! Where was

it? Oh, how stupid of him - he was wearing it! The AC was rather chilly. And he wouldn’t want to arrive in his shirt sleeves. Wherever it was he was going … Dave shook his head to clear it, settled his shoulders and tried to focus on the journey ahead. He glanced in the rear view mirror. Surely the car behind was familiar? He checked in the wing mirror. Yes, he knew it well. Odd. He looked back, turned, stared forward again. He sniffed – strange how the smell of flowers lingered. He looked at his watch. Plenty of time. Or was there? He tried to remember how long the journey should take, frowned when the answer wouldn’t come. What time was he due to arrive? He didn’t want to be late. He stared through the windscreen, concentrating. Heard his mother’s words once more. “You’d be late for …” Ah, that was it! Dave settled back in relief. But he couldn’t resist a peek at his watch. Late? Not at all. He was dead on time, actually.

Short Walk:
4
Miles
APPLE TON ROEBUCK AND BOLTON PERCY Appleton Roebuck and Bolton Percy are situated in an area of quiet countryside between the river Ouse and Wharfe, away from busy roads. The walk, which can be shortened by emitting a riverside section, visits both villages. Its main charm is the unspoilt countryside traversed with a mix of fields, hedged tracks and avenues and new woodland plantings.
Directions 1 Starting with the Roebuck Inn behind you, turn left on Main Street. Take the first turn left (Bond End), then in 200 metres turn right (Church Lane). Continue ahead where houses end on a wide grassy track between hedges. Stay on this, ignoring the footpath left after 750 metres, to go over the railway. Continue through a bike barrier after which the track becomes tarmacked and leads to a road. 2 Turn left towards Bolton Percy but in 80 metres, go right. In a further 150 metres turn left towards the sign for 15th century church (for Doylys Tea Room keep ahead). Pass the church to the right then keep right downslope with treed area to the right. At the road junction, turn right. Before a private road sign, turn left on an earth track. For the short walk, turn left soon after the church then head immediately right down Pump Alley. At a bend keep ahead to go over stream staying with the path as it bends to a road. Turn left on the road but in 50 metres go right (ahead) and continue the walk (direction point five below). 3 In 50 metres, just beyond the house, go over a stile on right and walk towards the wooden fence visible in the field corner. Shortly before the fence, cross a stile in the hedge to left and go ahead on a rough, rubble patched, track with the hedge right.
18
Just after the hedge kinks right, go through a gap (low post waymark) across the field to the hedge corner. Reaching this, continue with the hedge right towards the metal gate. Go over the adjacent stile and turn left alongside a hedge. Approaching a copse, go through a double stile, quickly reaching a further stile, giving access to a riverside pasture. Go forward towards the nearest pylon following a faint path ahead to the bank. 4 Ascend the bank and turn left with the river right. Continue on the bank for 500 metres to a fence and stile. Do not cross but go down the bank to a stile by a metal gate. Go over this and then climb a further stile on the left in five metres. Head half right, crossing a concrete bridge over a ditch. Then veer right following a faint path with pylons to the right and hedge left towards the far end of the pasture and a waymarked gate. At the gate go left up the grass track but in a few metres go right (ignore the tempting metal gate on the left) with the hedge left. Cross concrete bridge and swing left on obvious track towards the buildings and gate. 5 Go over a stile by a gate and continue on a hedged track which soon becomes a tarmac road. Continue into houses following the road round a right bend (short route joins here) but 50 metres beyond, where the road bends left, go right (ahead) down a road marked by a no through road sign.
Getting there
Distance:
6
Miles
Time:
2¾ Hours
The recommended starting point is the Roebuck Inn on Main Street, Appleton Roebuck. It is also possible to begin the walk in Bolton Percy. Roadside parking is available in both villages. Appleton Roebuck is eight miles from York travelling via Bishopthorpe (or the A64 and Bilbrough Top). Bus 21 runs infrequently from the railway station to both villages (not Sunday). The last return bus leaves Appleton Roebuck at 4.17pm.
Is this walk for me? This is an easy route, flat except for bridge and bankside inclines. There are no stiles on the short route but a number on the longer route south of Bolton Percy. This part of the walk also requires careful navigation and maybe impassable when river levels are high.
What to see Bolton Percy has several interesting buildings including the fifteenth century All Saints Church and nearby half-timbered Gatehouse. The graveyard opposite the church is a quiet retreat planted with flowers and shrubs. The riverside section south of the village has a range of flora. In May, large patches of pink-flowered Common bistort can be seen.
Refreshments The only option is the highly recommended Doylys Tea Room at Bolton Percy, open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 3pm. Both pubs in Appleton Roebuck and the pub in Bolton Percy are currently closed.
for 700 metres until a tarmac lane on right.
8 Turn right on the lane. Immediately after the lane crosses a stream and with houses ahead go left on the beaten path across grass. Follow this into trees to join a wider path continuing ahead (left) with the stream to left. Go left over the bridge and follow the track into Appleton Roebuck. Turn left at the small green to return to Main Street.
Disclaimer Walks are undertaken at your own risk. Due care must be taken in following the walk, particularly after poor weather. Whilst every care is taken in compiling the description changes may have occurred since publication. Neither the walk author nor Your LocalLink can accept any responsibility for errors or omissions.

YORK KARTING HERO ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS Local karting hero Bart Harrison has made an outstanding start to the 2022 racing season, taking third place in the British Karting Championship rankings after the first round contest at Shenington in Oxfordshire. Bart has moved up to senior level this year, and at just 14, he was the youngest driver on the grid. In the opening round of the WERA IAME British Karting Championships, he finished fifth in a fiercely fought final, within one second of the eventual winner. Bart’s overall performance over the weekend places him third in the UK rankings, just five points off the lead. With six more rounds to come throughout the summer Bart, who lives near York and drives for the successful Lincolnshire-based Mick Barrett Racing Team, is happy with the start he has made in the new tougher Senior X30 class: “I knew the move up to seniors would be challenging. There are some excellent drivers with more experience than I have, many of them in their twenties. But I have been able to bring the skills and techniques I have learned at Junior level and quickly adjust. I am delighted with this first weekend’s racing and looking forward to Round two at the Warden Law track in Sunderland in the next month.”

SPORT
YORK
COLUMNIST
We hear from our resident sports writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson. As I write this, York City have just reached the playoffs. In what can only be described as a remarkable achievement, City have finished fifth in the league — the highest they have been all season. Their form going into the playoffs certainly says a lot about the job John Askey has done for the team since he took over from Steve Watson in November. Askey seems like one of the best appointments since Nigel Worthington or the incredible doublewinning Gary Mills, back in 2012. Many of us reminisce about those days (with good reason) and hopefully, it could be Askey’s tenure that brings back the feel-good factor that has long been missing. Whether we make it out of this division or not, we’re heading in the right direction. But, I definitely feel to achieve any further success the team needs an overhaul with added firepower. The addition of Maziar Kouhyar has been excellent and there must be a team built around him. He must be one of the best signings the club has made in a long time. The excitement and danger that he brings to the pitch has been a joy to watch and it’s been a long time since I have seen a City player get the crowd off its feet. I hope to see more of that in
the near future. As we roll into the next season, we have also reached 100 years since the club formed back in 1922. From the Happy Wanderers in 1955 as the first team to reach 100 points, the 3-0 victory at Old Trafford and the double-winning success at Wembley in 2012 — what a century it has been! In a time of ups and downs, we have been through a lot as a club. But next season whatever division we’re in, we will play it in style. The new kit with its centenary crest is one of the best kits I have seen for a long time. With elements of York Minster emblazoned on the home shirt it will be the envy of many, albeit not to everyone's taste, but honestly, I think this kit will go down in history. Along with the men, we must give a big mention to York City Ladies. They have been the pride of the city this season, leaving the men’s team playing catch up. Not only have they won the division in style as champions, but they have also gone on to win the North Riding Cup dramatically on penalties. It has been an unbelievable season for them, and they deserve all the recognition that comes their way.

Speaking of recognition, Commercial Manager, Liam McGuinness has announced that he is leaving the club at the end of the season to join the Championship side at Middlesborough in a similar capacity. The work he has done in our first season at the LNER Stadium has been nothing short of excellent. All the best in your new role! Finally, the York City Knights continue to keep up their excellent form in the Championship season, as they currently sit third in the table. It has certainly shown this term that they

have managed to put a powerful side together to push for the Super League, where they look to be strong contenders. With the offer of seven match days for the price of six, there is no excuse for fans to not keep up the support. And, when the football ends, especially for those who haven’t managed to get to a game yet at the stadium, we must try and carry the same support to the rugby to keep the hopes of promotion alive. It really feels like York’s sporting sides are starting to show their true potential once again.

NEW BAKEHOUSE OPENS ON WALMGATE The Little Blondie Bakehouse business has had a successful opening weekend on Walmgate. If you have a sweet tooth like ourselves, then paying a visit to the new bakery business is a must. Rachel Chambers, who has worked in hospitality for over 20 years, launched the business back in summer 2020 during the pandemic. She said it has been ‘the best decision’ she has ever made. Always having a passion for baking from a young age Rachel found baking relaxing, offering her escapism during lockdown when restrictions were at their tightest. The initial launch of the bakehouse was only for friends and families
24
for an extra bit of income until it grew from there, allowing her to supply local farm shops and more. Taking over the lease on Walmgate in March, Rachel had to get the shop in order before she could reopen with the help of her supportive husband, Adam and her friends and family. Selling sweet treats ranging from brownies, blondies, NYC style cookies, cupcakes, muffins and many more! Rachel's personal recommendation is the caramel cornflake brownie which is her best selling treat. Rachel said: "Opening weekend was amazing, lots of new customers wishing us well and also regular customers from the past two years travelling to see our new shop”... “We were overwhelmed with the response and lovely feedback! With lots of people saying ‘it's just what Walmgate needs and is a great addition to the street.’” If you fancy popping on over to try some of these tasty treats, then Little Blondie Bakehouse is located at 66 Walmgate, York.

Why now is a good time to invest?
Louis Maddison
Independent Financial Planner
Imagine having the ability to predict market movements so you could buy low and sell high? But the markets are unpredictable – prices of stocks and shares change every second. It’s been shown in history that certain funds have done well, and others have gone off the boil. It may not seem like it, but whilst markets are in turmoil, it has historically been a good opportunity to invest. So, that brings us to diversification. Diversification is having investments which react differently to the same events. Imagine you only have investments in airline stocks. Following any negative news regarding the airlines, the stocks would undoubtedly plummet. Subsequently, your portfolio would also decrease in value. However, there’s a high chance that railway stocks will rise (due to higher demand). If you were invested in both, this would only affect part of your overall investment which would be far less risky. The benefits of diversification include: •Minimises the risk to your overall portfolio. •Exposes you to more opportunities for return. •Safeguards you against adverse market cycles. •Reduces volatility. The markets are always subject to volatility, according to what’s going on in the world. So to be a successful investor it’s important to take a pragmatic approach. One thing that will be a bumpy road is the global economic recovery from the pandemic. And with rising inflation and Russia’s attack on Ukraine, it’s making investors worry. But please don’t panic due to uncertainty. Stick to your plan and don’t let your emotions influence your decisions and choices. So where does that leave us? Here are some key steps that we recommend, to ensure you can make the most out of your money: 1. Find out your attitude to investment risk 2. Understand the relationship of risk and return.

Warren and Kath would like to thank all the customers who came through our doors at Auster Road since 2006 but it was time to move away from a premises based business. Warren and Kath continue to operate just as before and supply all installation and servicing requirements for most domestic gas appliances. Gas Boiler and Central Heating installation work remains a large part of the business as well as breakdown/repairs and routine maintenance. We also retain Worcester Accreditation so can offer 7, 10 and 12 year guarantees on Worcester boilers we install depending on specification.

FA R E W E L L T O O U R ACOMB BRANCH!
Five money challenges to help you make big savings At the moment being frugal with money has never been more important, with prices rising and money needing to stretch further and further. Experts at NetVoucherCodes.co.uk have released challenges to help families save their money. A spokesperson for NetVoucherCodes. co.uk said: “Pushing yourself to save will help long term and make sure you’ve got some spare cash set aside for the next rainy day.”
LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD
You may have read on our social media channels that we are closing our Acomb branch showroom, a store that has been part of our group of three shops for 45 years. It is with some sadness that we have come to this decision but since the opening of our Monks Cross superstore in 2017, we have seen more and more Acomb customers preferring to use the larger store on Monks Cross Drive. This is partly due to shopping habits, the increased range of choice and parking facilities for visitors, as well as the store’s proximity to other great retailers in the area. It is always challenging making decisions like this, but the Acomb closure has been made slightly easier knowing that we will not be making any changes to our staffing levels. It will also allow us to concentrate on our customer-first philosophy from the Monks Cross and Harrogate stores. I would like to thank our loyal customers who have continued to support the Acomb shop and assure them that we are still here whenever they need us. For anyone who may BuywellInteriors_FP_Mar18 29/10/18 13:30 Page 1 be worried that they cannot make
the trip over to Monks Cross, we are extending our free delivery offer on everything for those in the Acomb area — this includes washers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, televisions, kettles, toasters and microwaves — so please pick up the phone and let us know what you need and we will bring it straight around! The Acomb store will remain open whilst we clear all of the stock. If you have an eye for a bargain please pop in, as we have up to 50% off in our clearance sale. The likely timeframe for the final closure of the Acomb store will be around two months from now, but this will also depend on how quickly the sale items are snapped up. Find us at our Herbert Todd & Son Monks Cross store, online at www. htodd.co.uk, or give us a call on 01904 628676.

For example, if you pick envelopes 8 and 11, you’ll put away £19 that week. 2. Supermarket Sweep We’ve all gone into a shop with a few things on our list but left with a full basket. To avoid this trap set yourself a price limit and withdraw that amount so you only spend that.
setting aside days where you don’t spend any money. Nine times out of ten if you see something you want and have to wait till the next day to buy it then when tomorrow rolls around, you’ll probably find you won’t want it. 4. Planning Ahead Saving is great for emergencies and to budget for a little pleasure. So put money in a separate pot or account each week just so you have a rainy day fund or have to save for big events such as Christmas or birthdays. 5. Go Own Brand Next time you tackle a big shop try swapping expensive big branded products for the stores own brand. Most of the time cheaper options often taste similar if not the same.

Slowly but surely, Field Lane in Badger Hill has seen its roadside verges transformed into wildflower meadows. The work began in September 2020, making it the first road to have had its verges transformed thanks to funding from the Council’s Hull Road Ward Committee, and practical work by The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) and local residents. The project has helped increase biodiversity whilst reducing the need and cost of regular cutting. Councillor Michael Pavlovic, Hull Road Ward Committee, said: “As a key part of the Ward committee’s aim to enhance green space in the area for wildlife, this Wild Flowering Project created a spectacular colourful
display for people entering York during summer 2021 whilst also improving biodiversity and the environment.” The mix of native wildflower and grass species sown in September 2020 included cowslips, knapweeds, devil’sbit scabious, buttercups, birds-foot trefoil, lady’s bedstraw and self-heal. Roadside verges are of great importance in mitigating the loss of wildflower meadows as they are often undisturbed and have nutrient-poor soil creating an ideal habitat for wild plants and in turn a huge number of insects and pollinators. Some 45% of native UK wildflowers can be found on roadside verges. Jacob Lawson, Project Officer, for The Conservation Volunteers, said: “It has been a privilege to be a part of the Council’s plans to improve biodiversity in the area, and I look forward to this area developing into a conservation highlight for Hull Road Ward to be proud of.”

Looking for a way to get your little ones out in the great outdoors? It’s National Children’s Gardening Week from the 28th of May until the 5th of June. The campaign celebrates all of the fun that gardens hold for children, and its organisers have put some outdoor activities to help parents, grandparents, schools and businesses get involved in the fun. Flower pressing Pick your favourite flowers from the garden and then organise them on plain white pages in a notebook to make a pretty picture. Carefully close the book and place a heavy weight on top. The flowers will need between two and four weeks to completely flatten. Snail Racetrack If you’ve got flag paving or tarmac, kids could design a snail racing track with chalk on it. Think about making viewing points from whatever you have lying around - stones, milk tops, yoghurt pots.
Cress heads This activity is great if you don’t have much outdoor space. We recommend starting the day with eggs for breakfast and saving the bigger half of the shells. Draw faces on the eggshells, or even add google eyes, then simply fill the eggshells with cotton wool and spray with water. Sprinkle cress seeds on top of the cotton wool before giving them a good spray. Remember to water them daily, and you’ll soon find that the cress has begun to grow! For more ideas, visit www. childrensgardeningweek.co.uk.

EXPERT
Kohlrabi is one of those vegetables that have never really caught on in this country. Widely grown and eaten elsewhere, especially in Germanspeaking countries (kohlrabi literally translates as ‘cabbage turnip’ in the Swiss-German dialect), it doesn’t even have an English name. In case you’re not familiar with it, kohlrabi is a rounded globe or bulb,
sometimes flattened, sometimes more conical, that grows above the ground on a short stalk with cabbage type leaves sprouting from the sides and top. It comes in two colours, pale green or, more strikingly, purple. Peeled, the inner flesh is white. An odd vegetable, it has the equally odd Latin name Brassica oleracea gongylodes. As this indicates, it’s a member of the brassica or cabbage family. It is neither a leaf crop like a cabbage nor a root crop like a turnip. The edible ‘globe’ is, infact, the swollen stem of the plant. In terms of taste, the nearest equivalent I can suggest is the crunchy heart of a
hard white cabbage. I like to dabble in unusual veg and usually have a few kohlrabi on the plot. In the past, I tended to grow the quicker maturing types intended for eating when no larger than tennis ball size. These can be sown at any time from mid-April through to mid-July, taking 12-16 weeks to mature. Generally, green-skinned varieties are best for spring and summer growing, while the slightly hardier purple-skinned types are better for harvesting into the winter. Seeds can either be sown directly in the ground or in trays/pots for planting out. Space plants at least ten centimetres apart. Kohlrabi is fairly robust but any pests that attack other cabbage family crops, for example, caterpillars or wood pigeons, may cause damage, especially to the tender leaves. The key to a quality crop is fast, unchecked growth. Be especially sure to water well in dry conditions. Growing top-notch kohlrabi can be a challenge. In particular, if growth is slow or the plants are allowed to get too large, the globe will be unpalatable. With most varieties, anything bigger than a tennis ball is likely to be tough and woody. The tenderest kohlrabi are

those harvested when not much bigger than a golf ball. There are though, a few varieties of kohlrabi that can grow large without becoming fibrous. It is one of these, the green-skinned variety Superschmelz I now grow. A well-grown plant of this variety can easily exceed 2.5 kilos. Although some say it lacks flavour compared with smaller kohlrabi, not having to worry about it becoming inedible is reason enough to grow it. What’s more, it’ll stand well into the winter giving a longer, as well as a larger, harvest. To grow Superschmelz sow in late May or early June spacing plants 30 centimetres apart. Water, if dry, but otherwise no special attention is needed. There are other types that are said to remain tender if allowed to grow large including the purple-skinned Korist and Kossak but I’ve not grown either. For more information on these and growing kohlrabi generally, one of the best sources is ‘How to Grow Kohlrabi’ at https://www. gardenfocused.co.uk/vegetable/ kohlrabi.php.

An unpaid carer is someone who looks after a family member or friend who could not cope without their support, and there are 19,000 unpaid carers of all ages in York. The person they care for might have a disability, illness, mental health condition, addiction or may need extra help as they grow older. appointments or medication for someone else, providing emotional support, or dealing with benefits agencies and social workers. For young people it might mean looking after siblings or doing extra jobs around the house like cooking, cleaning or helping someone get dressed. Caring is often part of family life and close friendships. For some, caring is something that happens gradually when someone becomes older or has a progressive illness. For others, it arises suddenly, for example as the result of an accident or a stroke. Caring can be hugely rewarding, but it can also have an impact on all aspects of your life, such as balancing caring with your paid work or education, or making time to look after your health and wellbeing. Looking after someone without the right information and support can be tough.

These fruity cats are on the lookout for a new home! At nearly two years old, these charming and gentle ladies — Apples and Pears — have never been let outside to explore or had the chance to embark on any feline adventures. Bored and frustrated, these cats were previously cooped up in a small flat until the landlord found out there were ‘illegal’ cats within the property, and so they came to us for rehoming. Whilst initially shy, these sisters have come out of their shells and are always ready for a gentle fuss and fun playtime. We are sure they will greatly appreciate a new home where they can go outside and explore their surroundings, as long as they have a comfy sofa and a loving new human to return to. Being longer haired cats, they will require regular grooming but they love the attention, so it shouldn’t be a chore for anyone. It is time for Apples and Pears’ luck to change and hopefully, they will be off to pastures new very soon.

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU
Summer M U S T - H AV E S
1 THINK SPF The Great British Summer might not give us glorious sunshine every day, but even though the sun isn’t shining you still need to wear that SPF - like this one by Tropic Skincare costing £24. Diabetes week is to be celebrated this month, running from the 13th to the 19th of June. The primary focus is to raise awareness of diabetes, how to get the right treatment and what changes people can make to reduce their risk. It is also seen as a celebration of all those who have diabetes and have to juggle the ups and downs of living with diabetes in the UK. Diabetes has been predicted to become a huge crisis for the future health of the UK’s population, affecting more people in the UK than any other serious health condition. Making just some small changes to your daily routine can make a big difference to your health, which in the long term will help reduce your risk of heart, circulatory conditions and diabetes. Here are some ways in which you can improve your health or support Diabetes Week: Get Moving Regular exercise no matter how big or small

can not only improve your mental well-being it can also work wonders on your heart and help you to lose weight. Make Healthy Swaps Having a healthy and balanced diet is very important as it can help to reduce your risk of heart and circulatory diseases. Try swapping sugary sweets with plenty of fruit and vegetables to kickstart your heart health.
2 A FRIDGE FOR SKINCARE It might be a little boujee but having a skincare fridge will change your life! There’s no better feeling than moisturising with a refreshing spritz directly from your fridge. This one is from Primark costing £38.
Eat Healthy Fats To help lose and manage your weight, have some ‘good fats’ such as nuts and seeds or fatty fish such as salmon or tuna. Watch Your Blood Pressure If you have high blood pressure, then you could have an increased risk of having a heart attack or a stroke, so if you are ever concerned contact your GP surgery to get it checked out. If you would like to donate or get involved, visit www.diabetes.org.uk/diabetesweek or visit https://www.yourdiabetes. org.uk/ for additional health advice.
3 THINK BOLD This year's current trends are seeing more and more bold prints and this one from M&CO is not one to be missed! It’s priced at £32.99.

AFRICA IS BOUNCING BACK

TRAVEL EXPERT
This month, our resident travel expert, Kerry Lakey, is bringing you all you need to know for a summer in the savannah. For many people, an African safari is on their bucket list. It is a must-do now that the pandemic restrictions are no longer in place, and it is certainly bouncing back in style. As with many other parts of the world, Africa depends heavily on tourism and was hit hard by the lack of visitors. But, it is now open for business and people are flocking back to experience it and all its wonderful sights and sounds. But what happened during these past two years? Wildlife – no visitors meant no fees to the National Parks, reserves, safari camps and lodges but staff still had to be retained to provide protection from poachers and to monitor the populations of wild
animals including rhinos, gorillas, elephants and indeed all of the birds too. They have done an amazing job and are excited to now showcase all of this to visitors. Accommodation – many camps, lodges and hotels took the opportunity to refresh, upgrade and even rebuild their premises and there has been an explosion of new offerings available to visitors to experience and enjoy. People – unlike the UK, there was no furlough support available and it is fair to say that the vaccination programme took time to cover the logistics of dealing with such vast areas and a sparsely spread population. But, the eventual success of the programme means
Cheeky Chicken
that the majority of people in most areas are going about their daily business as before. What to expect – a friendly welcome, they have missed you! Exceptional wildlife sightings are better than ever. There have been many upgrades taking place, including high-quality accommodation, food and drink. With sights and sights like nowhere else on earth, Africa is uniquely special, and perhaps most of all will create memories that last a lifetime. If you would like to discuss travel possibilities, get in touch on 01904 623444, or call in to see us at 88 Main Street, Fulford. We look forward to speaking to you.

Gruyere, Asparagus and Cocktail Onion Quiche Great for picnics, beach snacks and outdoor entertaining. Serves 8 • Meal Occasion: Light Lunches • Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 30 minutes • Allergens: Gluten, eggs, dairy, mustard
RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Ingredients:
4. Beat the eggs in a large mixing bowl then add the
•320g sheet of ready rolled shortcrust pastry •4 eggs •100g gruyere cheese, grated •100g mature cheddar cheese, grated •130ml milk •1 tsp dijon mustard •50g Opies Cocktail Onions •80g asparagus, ends trimmed
gruyere, cheddar and milk, reserving a small handful of each cheese for later. Mix well and season to taste. 5. Pour the egg and cheese mixture into the pastry shell, then scatter over the cocktail onions. 6. Top the mixture with the asparagus spears, arranging in any way you like – if they don’t quite fit inside the dish, dice up the ends of the asparagus to shorten them and sprinkle the chopped pieces over the quiche too, along with the spears. 7. Top with the reserved cheese and cook in the oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and set in the middle.
Method: 1. Pre-heat oven to 200°C / 180°C fan / gas mark 6. 2. Unroll the pastry sheet and drape over a flan dish or shallow tin approximately 25cm in diameter. Trim off any excess pastry that overlaps the edges. 3. Line the pastry with baking beans and bake blind for 15 minutes or until the pastry is lightly golden, then remove to cool slightly.
Where to Buy: Opies Cocktail Onions 227g available from Tesco, Morrisons, Ocado and Sainsbury’s from just 90p.
