What’s online
yourlocallink.co.uk
Our home on the internet is jam-packed with York events, stories you won’t find in the magazine, monthly competitions and free printable walks from our Walking Wanderer.
Meet the team.
All good things must come to an end, and sadly we’ve had our run of longer breaks, thanks to the series of May Bank Holidays. But as we know, when one thing ends, another begins and so here we are, welcoming in the beautiful summer month of June. With a promise of warmer weather, music, and entertainment in the city this month, we can’t wait to get out and about.
We kick off the summer in York with the Festival of Ideas, a fantastic event that encourages locals and visitors to engage in interesting topics, concepts, and discussions alongside a programme of VIPs… including the wonderful, world-renowned author Micheal Morpurgo (say what!?) Off the back of the Festival of Ideas, York becomes a bold and vibrant hub as we prepare to celebrate York Pride, in support of our LGBTQ+
community - think bright colours, a giant parade, live entertainment, amazing scran and fairground rides set on the beautiful grounds of the Knavesmire.
As we’re fast approaching the school holidays, there are also plenty of family-friendly events to get involved in.
From the Wilberforce Trust Summer Fete to the Family Wildlife Day at Stillingfleet Lodge, there’s plenty to enjoy. And if you’re not quite out of learning mode just yet, York College has an open day later in the month if you want to explore your future career options, talk to tutors or browse York College's amazing facilities. As always, the city is brimming with events and experiences, so what are you waiting for? Get yourselves out and about and we’ll see you in July.
Ta-ra for now!

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
There are times this month when other people close to you will be running around like headless chickens, while you, in your infinite wisdom, take one step back and let ‘em get on with it. It isn’t a case of you not caring, but there’s nothing much you can do to help other people with their issues: if they come to you, you can advise and give counsel, but they must be allowed to come to you.
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
This could be a tricky month in which certain events (and maybe people) from your past catch up with you, leaving you feeling more than a little discombobulated. So, be careful if you’re arranging reunions (especially with old lovers and ex-partners), and ask yourself – is this meeting really necessary?
June 19th and 20th are not good days for travelling any long distances, and there is a tendency for you to be a bit accident-prone at this time.
LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG
June starts brightly enough with some exciting social events and a busy diary, but by the 11th or 12th things are quietening down and you experience a sense of anticlimax. Some irritation on the work scene around the 17th and 18th and some frustration when things do not go as planned. However, a change of energy around the 25th ignites some romantic ambitions, and you should be smiling before the month’s end.
VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
I don’t want to sound boring here, but June may well turn out to be a very routine month during which the accent is on jobs and careers. Relationships are secure, if a little predictable – and maybe that’s
a good thing! Could be some disruption caused by a relative (older?) around the 21st and 22nd but nothing here you can’t handle, although work routines and travel plans might be compromised.
LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT
The accent of activity in June seems to fall on younger Librans (under 35/40) who have a busy and sometimes awkward month sorting out a number of different problems (emotional during the first ten days, professional and practical during the last ten days), while older members of the sign don’t exactly stagnate, but succumb to a sense of duty and common sense at the expense of their own needs and priorities.
SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV
June should be a bit calmer and more predictable than May, which gives you breathing space to reassess recently made decisions and choices. You will come under
some emotional pressure at various times throughout the month, notably the 7th, 8th, and 9th, and then again around the 20th to make commitments that you are not quite ready to make, and although this might annoy and frustrate a lover or partner, stick to your guns.
SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV - 21ST DEC
There is a recurring theme throughout June which has to do with financial expenditure. You will be alarmed at the way a lover or partner is spending money on things that are unnecessary… The trouble is that while they might not be necessary to you, they are to the partner, and if they are spending their money rather than yours, you don’t have much of a leg to stand on. So tread carefully on this issue if you want to avoid arguments.

happy with their work situation right now… too many bosses and not enough workers, and you’re one of the workers! Not an obvious way of changing this, but a bit of long-term future planning might be a good idea. A mid-month journey could be important for either you or a partner; I’d have thought within the UK rather than overseas. Low energy levels are probably associated with diet.
AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB
You will be criticised for your financial priorities, especially if you’ve been splashing the cash on luxury items recently. While you will have responsibilities towards other people, if it is your money we’re talking about, you have the right to spend it how you choose. The problem here is that other people might not agree with you on this point, and thus this issue may well become a major conflict, not just of practicalities, but also of principle.
PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
Rather a sweet and easygoing month, I would have thought. No major issues, no major problems, and a refreshing social aspect that brings you into contact with one or two new friends and like-minded
people. Clubs and committees, garden parties, and (in some cases midnight feasts) keep you on your romantic toes, and any money spent on things that make you feel more confident seems to be a very sound investment.
ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR
June might be busting out all over, but you are definitely not! This is going to be a moody low key month, wherein nothing really goes wrong, but you nevertheless end up feeling grumpy and frustrated. There is an element of boredom here, but it’s more than that. Life seems to be passing you by and your get up and go has got up and gone. Maybe you need some new targets are fresh challenges?
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
It’s kind of a lazy month… you’ve got some energy but can’t be bothered to do anything with it! Some new ideas floating around, but at this stage, they are just ideas. A mid-month journey should be very significant, and if we take York as our starting point, I’d guess you were travelling west. Relationships are okay, but if a lover or partner is a bit uncommunicative at times, it’s only because they’re tired.

WALKING WITH THE WANDERER
Walk information
Dalby, Coulton and Scackleton
Starting from Dalby Church (nowhere near Dalby Forest!) this walk explores the quiet and remote Howardian Hills countryside. It offers a mix of woods and farmland, three secluded villages, and far reaching views.
Is this walk for me?
This is an undulating walk. There’s a long haul to Scackleton on a road and several shorter but steep ascents and descents in fields and woods. Generally, paths are well-waymarked, accessed through gates, and, with a few exceptions, not too mud prone. Horses and cattle may be grazing in some fields.
Getting there
The recommended starting point is opposite Dalby Church where there is a small parking area. It’s also possible to start in Coulton and Scackleton parking on the roadside. Dalby Church is accessed from York via Strensall and Sheriff Hutton. At the top of Terrington Bank go left, left (ahead) again in 150 metres then drive down and up steep slopes to take a small road on the left (signed church). This walk isn’t accessible by public transport.
Refreshments
No options en route. Yorkshire Lavender towards Terrington has a tearoom open in season. Terrington Village has a shop and cafe. Cafes and a pub are available slightly further away in Hovingham.
What to see
Dalby Church is of ancient foundation and has an unusual crenellated tower. The City of Troy turf maze, one of only eight in the UK and said to be the smallest in Europe, may or may not be of ancient origin (see more at www.worldwidewriter.co.uk/ city-of-troy-dalby-turf-maze.html). There’s much wildlife in the woods and valleys and long views over the Vale of York and towards Ampleforth and its abbey from Scackleton’s viewpoint.
Directions
Dalby, Coulton and Scackleton
Time: 3 hours Distance: 6 miles
1. Facing Dalby Church at the parking area go right on the narrow road. Ignore a footpath left beyond the house and continue on the road that carries virtually no traffic for about a kilometre to a T-junction by a house.
2. Turn right uphill, but in about 150 metres take the signed footpath left into trees. Where this divides in 50 metres, take the right fork following the narrow path as it curves through the wood. At the field, go right alongside the wood. Where the wood ends, keep ahead over a cultivated strip to a road.
3. Turn left on the road passing the City of Troy maze to the right. At the edge of trees to the left, turn right (bridleway sign). Continue for over 300 metres to a three-way signpost,at which go left (Mugdale). (For a shortcut, turn right and keep going on the track which becomes a paved road. At a junction turn right continuing through Scackleton to Direction Point 8).
4. Walk gradually downhill with bushes on the left. Continue as the path descends more steeply into a wooded area. Ignore private paths right walking through the valley to reach a tarmac track. Here turn right over the ornamental bridge but then go immediately left on a waymarked path into conifer trees. Climb steeply. At the top keep ahead with a
broken wall right. Watch for a metal gate on the right at which leave the bridleway following the signed footpath between high hedges. Where this meets a tarmac track do not go ahead but take the way-marked kissing gate into a paddock walking directly ahead to a gate between a house and buildings. Go through the gate and cross the tarmac to another gate.
5. Walk down the steep slope to a further gate leading into a wood. Go through and curve right on the narrow path to a bridge and further gate. Beyond, head half-right up the slope to another gate. Do not go through but turn sharp right, as signed, along the top of the slope. In about 200 metres, descend slightly to a gate. Go through and take the left-signed path crossing the field bottom to a gate beyond the buildings. Climb steps to a gate. Enter the field and turn left aiming to the right of the corner but left of farm buildings. Find the gate then walk ahead on the surfaced track.
6. About 250 metres along the track take the signed footpath (Coulton) into a field. Follow the hedge on the right but just beyond a prominent tree head slightly left towards a telegraph pole (the route was demarcated by an earth strip at the time of writing). From the pole, keep ahead then, approaching the field end, go left to a gate between two trees. Through, go straight ahead towards a

large tree behind which is a gate giving access to a road.
7. Turn right on the road following it out of Coulton downhill. The walk now continues on this quiet road for over a mile passing Coulton Mill in the valley before climbing to Scackleton.
8. Walk through most of the village. Opposite the church on the left, take the tarmac lane right (Low Moor Farm). Remain on this lane ignoring a footpath left after which the track becomes rougher- surfaced. Soon after this do not go left into the farm but continue ahead with a hedge right. At the
next divide keep ahead on a grassy track. At the farm pass the house then turn immediately left in front of a barn following a fence right to a bridge.
9. Cross and go into the field (often muddy) and head slightly right following the line of telegraph poles towards gates. Go through and head uphill with a hedge/fence left. At the road turn left but in 50 metres turn right on a smaller road. Follow this as it turns sharp right back to the parking area.
Walks are undertaken at your own risk. Due care must be taken in following the walk, particularly after poor weather. York Festival of Ideas 2023 Part of the club
Club Wilber, hosted by local charity, The Wilberforce Trust, provides a supportive environment and an opportunity to get together for families in Yorkshire who have a child or young person aged 0-25 years with a visual impairment, including those with other disabilities. Their activities and events are designed for the whole family to enjoy together, and offer a chance to spend time with people that can share your experiences and gain support and advice.
Earlier this year, the club hosted an accessible Easter Egg Hunt, an annual event that initially launched Club Wilber back in 2019. This lovely event used specially-made eggs with a sound mechanism inside so they could be found by using hearing rather than sight! Tasty treats were hidden along the way in baskets and hay on little picnic mat stations. At the end of the course, the children were able to exchange their
beeping eggs for a chocolate one. Sighted siblings also joined in the fun by donning an eye mask, so they too were relying on their hearing to experience this unique, seasonal activity. Now looking at their summer calendar, The Wilberforce Trust will be hosting a special Summer Fete for the public, which will take place on Saturday the 24th of June. So, if you would like to support this fantastic, local charity and see what exciting things they have in store this month, make sure you pop along! For more information, please visit www.wilberforcetrust.org.uk.
York Festival of Ideas returns from the 2nd to 15th June with an eclectic programme featuring over 150 mostly free in-person and online events inviting you to ‘Rediscover, Reimagine, Rebuild’.
This year’s festival promises to educate, entertain and inspire with an array of talks, performances, family activities, panel discussions, and more. With events covering 15 different themes and topics ranging from archaeology to art, history to health and politics to psychology, there’s something for all interests.
There will be contributions from a host of world-class speakers and performers, including BBC presenter and Team GB triathlete Louise Minchin; solicitor and former Chief Prosecutor Nazir Afzal; bestselling author, historian and broadcaster Tracy Borman; acclaimed children’s author Michael Morpurgo; and actor Tim McInnerny, who will appear in the Festival Finale, ‘Elégie’, together with the concert’s creator, pianist Lucy Parham. This year, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It’s also launched a new Unlimited Annual Pass for £45 meaning passengers pay for one day and travel for 12 months. Better yet, kids go free (aged 0-15) this year too. The charity is encouraging all of its loyal visitors and new guests
to join in the 50th celebrations this year. Whilst on board, passengers can take in the breathtaking scenery including Goathland railway station, known to millions as a filming location for the iconic Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This beautiful slinky boy came from a multi-cat household where the owners couldn’t cope with the growing number of cats they had. At the moment Toby is rightfully worried and scared of his new surroundings which means he spends lots of time tucking himself away under his fortress. But with a little encouragement and patience, he will come out and say hi and when he does come out he is such friendly loving young gentleman!
Maybelline is what we would call a good 'all-rounder'. She is one of those cats who seems more than happy to accept a fuss if it is on offer but if no one is around to pay her some attention she will just settle down in her heated bed and have a snooze. We are sure that in a new home, she will quickly suss out all the best places to relax, eat, sleep, and, most importantly, get some wellearned adoration from her new family.
If you could give one of these cutie pies a home, contact York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 01904 760356 or via www. cats.org.uk/york.

We hear from our resident Sports Writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson.
We are currently heading into the off-season, and this time last year, I, like many other City fans was in high spirits, excited to see us back in the National League. Everything was great and it was good to be loving football again. Roll on a year later, and what was meant to be a celebration of a club's centenary has been nothing but misery. It feels like the club hasn’t been this unstable for a very long time. The only way this will change is if a new owner comes in.
As I write this column, the players retained for the new season enter my inbox. There is a solid squad still there, but quality in the attacking areas still needs to be addressed as we failed to score when creating some great chances last season. We need to keep hold of John Lewis but then make sure that we get out there, and freshen up with a backup for someone who can slot in with ease, to play how we can and want to play. What will also be interesting to see, is if Mikey Morton who has overseen the management role and released these players, will be in charge at the beginning of
next season. I do feel that he will be given the job and maybe this will have all changed before this column comes out to you. But, having seen York survive under his guidance, he will have earned his opportunity. Whether I think it's the right decision is definitely up for debate though.
On the plus, we have to also mention some of the good things for the club this year, including the ladies who have seen the real impact of the Lioness's success with some great crowds. They’ve had a good solid season, playing at their highest level, and have done themselves proud. Hopefully, there will be more games at the LNER next season too.
Also, what a success the youth team has also had with securing the National League Academy Cup. There has been a real buzz about this year’s group of players and it'll be good to see some of them break into the first team next season. Not only is it crucial to see players breakthrough as one of your own, but as we saw with Ben Godfrey, it could
be much-needed money that helps secure the future of the club going forward. It certainly seems as though there's enough talent to do that right now. The future is definitely bright!
As we move towards rugby, both men's and women's teams are having a good season so far. The men's team isn't near the top as yet and has been steady so far, but of course, with a lot of change at the helm, it is still a good indication of them being in a good place. Valkyrie has had a
cracking start and with players being named in the England squad too, it shows the quality this squad has. A particular highlight in the last month for them has to be the 122-0 victory over Hull KR. Having reached the cup final last season, hopefully, the Valkyrie can go one better this season and win it maybe this year. Hopefully, the men’s side can also keep up and get that next step up too. Here's to a great summer, fingers crossed!

Located next to York Minster, The Belfrey Church is an organisation that serves the community, supporting social action across the city and beyond.
In order to support local charitable and not-for-profit organisations, The Belfrey have recently been accepting applications for their newly established Catalyst Fund. Focussing on areas of poverty, mental health, young people, and families, this grant aims to provide several charities with a
substantial fund that will aid their growth and in turn help them to maintain an impact on the community. Successful applicants are expected to receive up to a maximum of £15,000.
This isn’t the only grant available from the organisation this year, however. The Belfrey Small Grants Fund, in partnership with Two Ridings Community Foundation is offering grants of up to £5000 for charitable projects that provide ongoing support, and smaller grants are being offered to smaller projects that aim to bring happiness into the lives of those in need. A decision for grant awards will be made this month, and the final deadline for applications will be this August. For updates on these two funds, and further information, please visit https://www. belfrey.org/grants.

Plans for new university student centre underway
The University of York has now been given the green light for the demolition of some existing empty buildings on campus, to make room for an exciting new student centre. Co-designed by ADP Architecture and O’Donnell + Tuomey, this brand-new building will become a significant new feature on Campus West. The proposed designs for this £35m building will offer students a variety of innovative spaces, including events space, collaborative study areas, studios for student radio and TV as well as a brand new student union and student support services. Also on the agenda, are places to eat and drink, and an additional rooftop garden. Although plans have been underway since 2021, the latest update for the centre reports that the stripping of existing buildings has begun and hoarding has also been set up around the site in preparation.
To encourage students to thrive in their environment, the organisation has also been
seeking feedback in the interim. Professor Tracy Lightfoot, ProVice-Chancellor for Teaching, Learning and Students, at the University of York, said: “This is an important milestone in this project. In the last year, we have spent a lot of time engaging and listening to our students to ensure that the plans truly reflect what they want, and need, from a building like this.”
Tracy continues: “The spaces have been adapted to fit their feedback and we will continue to do this throughout the rest of the process. Our iconic new Student Centre promises to be a fantastic asset to our students, the University, and the local community.” As it currently stands, the hopes remain that formal building work will begin in the spring of 2024, with students able to access and use, the new facilities in the academic year 2025-26. For the latest updates, visit www. york.ac.uk/students/studentcentre/aspirational-thoughtfuldesign/timeline/.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be a Beekeeper, now is your chance to find out!

The end of last month saw World Bee Day and to honour these wonderful things, we thought we’d tell you a few fun facts about why these little creatures are quite literally the bees-knees:
1. Did you know that pollinators, such as bees, are responsible for one out of every three mouthfuls of the food that we eat?
2. As well as their many quirks, bees are also little divas. Bees communicate with one another by ‘dancing’ to find food.
3. In 2017, it was discovered that
WIN!
A Hanging Basket from Brown's Nurseries
bees use scent markers, which are essentially like smelly footprints, to distinguish between a stranger, a relative, or their own scent.
4. Queen bees are selected by a hive. They choose a young larva and feed it a milk-like substance called ‘royal jelly’. This will eventually help the queen bee to develop its fertility.
5. And finally, ahead of this summer, if you see a bee struggling to fly in the heat, you can help to revive these little guys by mixing a little bit of white sugar and water on a teaspoon and feeding it gently to the bee. To find out more information and facts, please visit www.wwf.org.uk.

Birds and Berries
We’re now on the cusp of the soft fruit season. Soft fruit, in case you’re not familiar with the term, is horticultural speak for small stoneless fruit: in other words, berries. Starting with strawberries in June and ending with autumn raspberries in October, it’s possible to enjoy more than four months of delicious and health giving home-grown berries. However, it’s not just humans that enjoy soft fruit. Other garden inhabitants and visitors will want to share or, given the opportunity, completely plunder the
crop. In domestic situations, unless protected, berry crops will be ransacked. The most prolific and persistent pillagers are nearly always birds.
Blackbirds are perhaps the most notorious berry addicts, but other birds will loot soft fruit. On my plot, this includes wood pigeons that guzzle gooseberries before they’ve even reached full size and robins, sparrows and tits, all of which I’ve seen sampling strawberries or loitering suspiciously under berry bushes laden with ripening fruit.
In a garden where lots of berries are grown, a fruit cage is the most effective defence against marauding avians. Cages, though, can be expensive to buy and time consuming to erect and maintain. Netting easily becomes torn and, ideally, needs to be removed each winter to avoid the risk of heavy snow collecting on the mesh and collapsing the structure. Where
a fruit cage is impractical or only a small quantity of fruit is grown there are a number of methods that can help fend off birds. Forget dangling strips of flapping plastic from strings or hanging reflective CDs. Birds quickly become accustomed to such measures. Possibly more worthwhile is a suspended dummy hawk but, again, birds may soon grow nonchalant and ignore it. Far more effective is excluding birds entirely through netting. A lazy method is to loosely drape net over and around berry plants. It’s not something to be recommended as it can pull off berries when lifted for picking and, more importantly, lead to birds becoming entangled. A better approach, and one I still use on berries grown outside the fruit cage, is to encase suitable berry bushes in old net curtains. Using clothes pegs and ensuring the curtains stretch to the ground it’s fairly easy to protectively ‘dress’ bushes such as blackcurrants, redcurrants and gooseberries. A bonus is that such netting partially obscures the berries so birds are less inclined to try and get at them. When trying to protect berries from birds it’s also worth remembering
Tony Chalcraft
that, as with all things avian, there’s a pecking order in terms of preference for types of fruit. It also seems the eagerness with which birds steal berries varies through the season. Overall, the redder the berry and the earlier it ripens the more likely birds will try and eat it. Strawberries, for instance, fruiting in June and July, are beloved by blackbirds and will almost certainly be taken unless protected. Redcurrants are another allure. Indeed, these are often stolen when still tinted pink. Other bird favourites are ripe dessert gooseberries and hybrid berries such as tayberries. Raspberries, however, despite the redness of most varieties, seem less of an avian attraction, especially the later fruiting autumn types. The same can be said of blackcurrants and, especially, blackberries which are usually left largely untouched. There are some exceptions to this red and early ‘rule’. August and early September fruiting blueberries seem much loved by birds and are a must for protection.

Local charity heroes, York Against Cancer have been providing support and assistance to cancer patients and their close networks for many years.
Constantly striving for new projects to better the lives of those who are suffering, the organisation is now proud to announce its latest venture. Thanks to the generosity of Old Tithe Cottage's owners, Hazel and Phil, who wanted to do something to support cancer patients in the area, York & Scarborough Hospitals Trust cancer patients can now spend three nights at their lovely Yapham retreat. After spending over a decade on the renovation of the disused dairy farm, the couple kindly decided to donate
the use of the cottage to York Against Cancer.
In response to the latest initiative, CEO at York Against Cancer, Julie Russell stated: “We know from our other respite property just how much these breaks mean to patients as well as their families and friends, so having this second property means we can support so many more families through their difficult times. We really can’t thank Hazel and Phil enough for doing this!”
If you know someone locally who has been diagnosed and might benefit from a refreshing break at The Old Tithe Cottage, please visit www. yorkagainstcancer.org.uk or call 01904 764466 for more information.
BRINGINGOUTTHEIRBEST
This month sees the celebration of volunteers across the UK with Volunteers Week. Between the 1st-7th June, we take the opportunity to recognise the impactful contribution that volunteers make to local organisations and charities. And so, in light of Volunteers Week 2023, we thought we’d shout about local children’s charity, The Island. The Island provides mentoring services to young people within York, who may be struggling with their social, emotional and mental health. Their volunteers play a significant role in assisting with the children’s self-development and learning, and this is mostly achieved through a range of recreational activities from playing board games to baking and
everything in between. The Island tailor their volunteering programme based on each mentee individually. Whilst one mentee may require a one-to-one mentorship, another might find they’re more comfortable in a group setting. There are currently 62 existing mentoring relationships supported by The Island and 36 mentees attending the group sessions! So, if you’re a personable, friendly, approachable person who enjoys working with children and you’re looking for a way to give back to the community, The Island is always looking for volunteers. For more information on how to apply, please visit www. theislandyork.org.

Review: Delta Hotels York By Marriott
Following its recent refurbishment, Delta Hotels by Marriott offers visitors and residents of York alike, a relaxing time in the city. We hear from our writer, Emily who was lucky enough to take a visit:
Nestled on Tadcaster Road, away from the hustle and bustle of town lies the newly-refurbished Delta Hotel by Marriott. As we arrive for our stay, there’s plenty of parking around the back and we don’t have to carry our bags far before arriving at the foyer.
The reception area is smart and despite being a corporate hotel, the plush decor and relaxed seating area in the foyer immediately say that this will be a home away from home. Our check-in is welcoming and efficient, and it's not long before we take the cosy elevator to the third floor. Making our way through the maze of corridors, we excitedly use our key card to enter room 316.
A King Superior room awaits us and we’re immediately met with the view of a lounge area, complete with a cosy sofa, large tele, and all the basic amenities you hope to see in a hotel. From little luxuries such as a selection of teas, coffees, a
CheekyChicken
stash of biscuits, and clean-pressed robes, to more functional features like an iron, refrigerator, and kettle, the room is well equipped. Over in the bedroom, there’s a majorly inviting King Bed with fresh, crisp sheets and enough room to roll over about three times before being in danger of falling off. Another tele faces the bed, so you even have the luxury of a few options for where to spend your downtime.
The bathroom is light, airy and features a beautiful view overlooking the beautiful hotel grounds and Knavesmire further afield. As well as the toilet, the room contains a bath and shower, and an additional shower cubical. Even if you forget the essentials, Delta Hotel has you covered supplying fluffy towels, a rack of thisworks® shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, along with a few other bath-time goodies. Once we’re settled into our room, we head down to try out the gym.

Bear in mind, if you’re planning on using the lockers, you do need a pound to secure your key! The gym is snug but contains most of what you’d need to maintain your fitness routine away from home. From dumbbells to barbells, a cross trainer to a treadmill, there’s something for every basic exercise need. There’s also a pool within the leisure site, and although you shouldn’t expect to do any Olympic-style swimming, the quaint pool is perfect for a gentle swim. The jacuzzi was a particular highlight and if time wasn’t of the essence, we’d have certainly stayed there all day. It is gorgeously warm and too good to miss. Equally, there’s a lovely little sauna and steam room to make use of too as well as some deck chairs if you fancy reading a book by the pool- the perfect relaxation routine before bed!
After a sound sleep, it’s time for us to go for breakfast. We’re offered a pot of fresh coffee and to our
CheekyChicken
CheekyChicken
delight, we’re led to a table that overlooks the beautiful gardens and racecourse. The breakfast room is spacious, comfy, and wellorganised. Being wholehearted foodies, my guest and I take full opportunity of this extensive breakfast buffet. From every component of a Full English that you could think of, to sweet waffles, fresh pastries, bread, continental meat and cheeses, fruits, delicious spreads, an array of cereals and juices, Delta Hotel ensures you will not leave the premises hungry. After rolling ourselves out of the breakfast room, we pack our bags and head for checkout. If there’s one thing that can be safely said about our stay at the Delta Hotel, it’s that we felt well and truly pampered and we wouldn’t hesitate to return.

WOAH! WE’RE GOING TO BARBADOS
2023 is flying by and we cannot believe we are now well into the summer season. If you are still looking to get away this summer, there is still limited availability but for peak dates for the best choice of flights and accommodation, we would recommend looking sooner rather than later.
Last month, we had the pleasure of meeting with the UK representative from Barbados Tourism to discuss all that is happening and what’s new on this beautiful Caribbean Island as they remove all covid requirements when travelling from the UK.
Whether you are thinking of a first-time visit to Barbados, or if you have experienced the local hospitality previously, here’s why you should consider Barbados for
your next Caribbean break: Located in the parish of St. Philip, Sam Lord's Castle was a beautiful Georgian mansion built in 1820 by the notorious buccaneer Samuel Hall Lord, known as 'Sam Lord'. Recently opened on the castle grounds, you will find the new Sam Lord’s Castle, Wyndham Grand Resort.
This 442-room, all-inclusive beachfront resort offers a range of rooms and suites alongside an array of dining options for all tastes - whether you crave tantalising seafood and sushi, or a refreshing speciality cocktail at the sunkissed poolside bars. Also catering to families, they have a shallow children's pool, family-friendly activity programme, and a kids club to keep the little ones busy.
If a more adult-focused resort is what you have in mind, the O2 Beach Club opened in December 2021 and this 5-star property, located in St Lawrence Gap, has a choice of three swimming pools, two of which are adult-only. The stunning hotel boasts 130 rooms offering a choice of pool view rooms to luxury ocean view suites. The famous Oistins Fish Fry is just a short taxi ride away where you can sample fresh tuna, swordfish, marlin, mahi-mahi, or flying fish. Villa-style accommodation is becoming more popular in Barbados whether for larger families or groups of friends travelling together. From being located by the golf courses of Ape Hill or at the famous Sandy Lane. If you’ve decided to make
Barbados your next destination of choice here are three attractions to consider adding to your plans: Eco Adventure Park, Zipline and obstacle course at Harrison’s Cave, Sushi Under the Sea with Atlantis Submarines, and an Island Time Rum Tour.
With direct flights available from Manchester and London offering economy, premium, and business class cabins, there has never been an easier time to head for Barbados.
If you would like to discuss a trip to Barbados visit us at 88 Main Street, Fulford or call 01904 623444 to discuss your requirements.
