YORK LIFE
What’s inside COVER STORY:
20-21. TIME TRAVEL. If someone asked you to describe our beautiful city of York, what would you say? Historic? Old? Bettys Tea Rooms? Okay, so that’s not an adjective, but it’s hard to think of York without thinking of Bettys. So, if the whole city is old, then how old is the oldest house in York? Allow us to tell you all about it as we visit the remains of The Norman House. 18-19. TREASURE HUNT. Forget the Tooth Fairy - in this month’s Treasure Hunt we’re your very own ‘Booth’ Fairies, as we guide you down the deepest, darkest depths of Bootham. So turn to pages 18-19 as we tell you the Booth, the whole Booth, and nothing but The Booth.
COLUMNS: 14. KRYSTAL’S GEMS. Here in the Your Local Link offices, we wouldn’t dream of letting our Krystal loose in a kitchen (we’ve seen the concoctions she comes up with). However, the Grand Hotel in York did let her in, for one of their incredible new cooking workshops. And we have to admit - girl did good.
10-11. YORK LIFE. Have you ever felt regret? Of course you have - you wouldn’t be human if you didn’t. We still regret that time when the Co-op were selling Kinder Eggs off for 15p and we only bought 12. We could have had the whole damn set by now. Anyway, Rachel Ragg’s sharing her biggest regrets in this month’s York Life. 44. HOWARD. Never one to shy away from an honest opinion, Howard’s back with his strong views on ‘Das Kinderfiend’. Sounds bad, right? No, he’s actually talking about his eldest son. You couldn’t make this stuff up.

- and that means the sun’s on its way out and daffodils are popping up. York’s events will be infused with the delicious scent of spring. But the best thing about March? Pancake Day.
• WIN • WIN • WIN • WIN • WIN • WIN • WIN • WIN • WIN • WIN • Okay get this - six lovely lads are about to hit the stage and bare all for the good people of York, in The Full Monty. And we’ve got tickets to give away. And for something completely different, we’re also giving away a family ticket for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to ride behind LNER Class A4 4488 Union of South Africa - worth £62! spring into action Right guys, this is it. The moment we’ve all been waiting for. It’s the turn of the season. Spring is here. No more gloomy dark nights. No more post-Christmas blues. No more snow – actually we can’t promise that. This is England after all, and snow in March isn’t exactly unheard of. And technically spring doesn’t officially start until around the 20th. But now it’s getting depressing again so let’s swiftly move on. The eagerly-awaited season comes with many benefits, especially here in York. For starters, let us just give you two words: Baby. Ducks. If you’ve got a
sunshine even after it’s turned 3pm. If these delights don’t tickle your tulips, then maybe this one will delight your daffodils. Because March is, after all, the month of the daffodil; and York is the best place to see them. The York Walls have always been a picturesque sight – but they’re even more so in the spring when the dainty Welsh daffs decorate the grassy mounds. But let’s face it – what you’re really here for is the events. York’s never short of a gig or two, and March is no different. We’ve scoured the land yet again for you, so that you and your families can
child that enjoys singing a certain sharkrelated song, those words will probably be followed by ‘doo doo doo-doo doo-doo’, but that’s not what we’re referring to here. We’re talking about the cute little ducks that waddle around Haxby pond. Yes, people complain about having to stop their cars to let the little fluffballs cross the road, but admit it – we love them. Another spring favourite in York is the fact that you can now enjoy a York City Cruise without dying from the cold. Hop on board in a flowing dress or shorts (maybe not) and enjoy the SARAH

enjoy everything there is to do in our amazing city. For the full, extensive list, pop to pages XX-XX and get your calendars filled – or you can see an even BIGGER list (no, we didn’t think it was possible either) on our shiny website at www.yourlocallink.co.uk. Last month saw us tackle Vikings at the JORVIK Viking Festival 2019, and search for sculptures in the Ice Trail. But this month we’ve got the York Literature Festival, the Living North Spring Fair (see, the word ‘spring’ again…!), International Women’s Week, and York Fashion Week. To name just a few. So, get your Welsh flags at the ready for St David’s Day on the 1st, buy your Nutella and fresh lemons for Pancake Day on the 5th and dig out your sunglasses: welcome to March! Why didn’t I become a consultant surgeon?* These ones aren’t worth dwelling on, as they’re so very insignificant and have not affected my life at all.
YORK LIFE
AND LIFE IN GENERAL
I regret to say that I am at last forced to mention Brexit. More specifically David Cameron and his recent pronouncement that he “doesn’t regret” calling the referendum. I can think of a couple of people who might be happy to regret it for him. But Brexit aside, a lack of regret appears to be part of the make-up of politicians. Norman Lamont was a prime example, when he replied “je ne regrette rien” when asked during a 1993 by-election campaign: “Chancellor, which do you regret most: seeing green shoots or singing in the bath?”
And let’s not forget dear old Tony Blair. Admittedly, he was good at regretting things on behalf of other people (the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s, for example), but notably quiet when it came to regretting his own bad decisions (the Iraq War; wearing jeans). Of course, it’s not just politicians. Having no regrets is pretty much part of the job description if you are anything resembling famous. When asked questions such as “do you regret your six marriages/cocaine habit/ bankruptcy/prison sentence?” said people invariably wheel out Highly Philosophical
MEMORIALS
comments such as “there are no regrets in life, just lessons”, or “never regret anything you do, because it makes you who you are”. Though I suppose if who you are is an alcoholic bank-robbing sex pest – and you’re happy with that – then who am I to knock it? Thinking about it, they may have a point. However, I am of course not famous. Therefore I am mired neckdeep in regret about, well, pretty much everything. In fact, je regrette tout, is about the size of it. The Regrets fall into several categories. THE EXTREMELY TRIVIAL REGRETS Why didn’t I marry a multi-millionaire and live in that big Georgian house
THE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND/OR LIFE-CHANGING REGRETS These invariably involve Wombell’s Auction House. My current Grand Life Regret is that I missed out on the glass bottle marked ‘Poison’ in their last sale. It would have been my new wine decanter, if only I had left a higher bid. In fact, there’s a double regret here: not only do I regret leaving a too-low bid, but I also regret having done whatever I was doing that meant I couldn’t get to the sale in person. This regret has the potential to overshadow all the things I don’t at all regret having won (grape scissors and lobster picks, for instance).

MEMORIAL MASONS SINCE 1880
These consist of things like failing to buy an extra roll of Christmas wrapping paper with 70% off in the M&S sale; not snapping up a Hobbs coat in the British Heart Foundation shop on Goodramgate (regardless of the fact that it was several sizes too big); giving away several sets of curtains that I wrongly thought I would never need again; and having to throw away the yellow-stickered cauliflower I bought for 30p with the intention of making cauliflower soup, when I found it dying in the pantry a month later. THE CLOTHING REGRETS Everyone has these. My wardrobe is a veritable shrine to regrets old and new. Why did I ever think I would need a silver velvet dress? What possessed me to buy anything, ever, from Oliver Bonas?
THE ANCIENT REGRETS These are the obvious ones. Things like giving up piano lessons; not applying to Oxbridge for fear of suffering the same fate as Olivia Channon; never learning to swim properly; not eating enough carrots
as a child (because I would have perfect vision now, had I done so). THE ONGOING REGRETS A.K.A. my dysfunctional relationship with Barclays, a two-year saga of regret that would take about 200 years to describe in its full un-glory. Or the expensive daily regret I feel about painting my kitchen walls with Farrow and Ball Blackened, when it would obviously have been better to use Pointing or Slipper Satin.
YORK LIFE
THE DAY-TO-DAY REGRETS
THE IMMEDIATE REGRETS Today’s regret is the fact that I decided to cycle into town, as it had started raining by the time I reached The Mount. This in turn caused me to regret my lack of waterproof clothing, which caused a sub-regret that I can never find anything when I need it. THE BIGGEST REGRET OF ALL TIME No competition here: the prize goes to the Chegg Sandwich. The afternoon tea menu of a local eaterie (which had better remain nameless, but is not Betty’s) featured cheese and egg sandwiches. What arrived, however, was a tray of little sandwiches containing something yellow, which had been beaten into unidentifiable mayonnaiseish submission. I regretted this sandwich immediately, and for several hours afterwards. *The fact that I never managed to pass a science exam might have played a role, here.

PISCES
19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
Most Piscesians are going to feel safe, tucked away in their own little worlds – but a few are going to start feeling tense and claustrophobic, and will inevitably start looking for opportunities to break free from routine and start looking to distant horizons in search of change and adventure. Therefore, March could be described as a safe and stable month for the majority, but a very exciting time for the minority. Now, the question is, which one are you? In which camp do you fall? If you can come up with an honest answer, it puts you in the position wherein you can call the shots and make
ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR
March promises to be a busy and energetic month. New work routines make you feel more in control, and whether you like it or not, you will have to assume the leadership role. On the home front there may be some patches of frustration and boredom, but the initiative to bounce things up a bit is definitely in your own hands. Others will be happy to follow your lead.

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
Quite a bright month for the majority of Taureans. Spring is just around the corner and you should have a bit more energy on tap. Some new banking arrangements put a little more cash in your kitty, and this is a good time for making careful investments. Partnerships are solid and stable, with some nice romantic tingles for the young and fancy free.

the choices. I would have thought that as far as romantic aspects are concerned, all members of the sign are on to a bit of a winner at this time. If you’re looking to consolidate an existing union, this should not be difficult, providing you’re prepared to follow the “safe” pathway. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for something new, then the “adventurous” pathway is definitely the best pathway to follow. There is one major snag here, insofar as you can’t have both at the same time!
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
You begin to reap the reward for past efforts and will receive evidence to indicate that recently made decisions have been the right ones. The 19th is a particularly auspicious date for receiving important family news, and the latter days of the month should see you planning parties or preparing for an important reunion.
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
A much better month than February. You’ll feel much more in control of your own life, but there will be numerous temptations to back-slide and change your mind about recently made decisions. Try not to do this because it will undo all the gains to have recently made. Stick to your guns and maintain faith with your values and principles.

While romantic and emotional relationships seem to flourish, a few friendships may need to be reviewed at this time. You’ve got something that someone else wants, and they’re not at all happy about it! There is a peak of tension around the 17th, 18th and 19th, and this is a time when you should discover just who your tried and trusted friends really are.
VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
On one level this is a busy and profitable month, but there are times when you’re going to find yourself in a dreamy state of mind as you consider other life pathways. You need to spend some time here working out what is a practical possibility and what is just some crazy notion. A key answer to questions asked falls into place on or around the 22nd.
LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT
A smoothing of ruffled feathers and a calming of stormy waters creates better relationships with those closest to you, and while you don’t want to rock any boats, you must make a point of holding people to their word and not allowing them to wriggle their way out of recently made commitments. Someone will be trying to do this around the 13th and 14th and again around the 21st and 22nd.
SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV
This should be a lovely period for all affairs of the heart, and if it isn’t, you’ve got to ask yourself why? Ask the question and you will get an answer, and can then start
changing things to your own emotional advantage. There are some good travel energies around the 23rd or 24th and this should give you time to re-evaluate some of your priorities. 22ND NOV
SAGITTARIUS - 21ST DEC
Events start falling into place which make you feel much brighter and more confident, and some earlier compromises and sacrifices should start being rewarded. Lovers and partners work hard to please, and it seems important that you should make some effort to respond in kind. Parents of grown up children should make a point of remembering that they are grown up!

Recipe for success
When I’m cooking at home, you won’t catch me making much from scratch. I’m a slave to curry paste, microwave rice and pre-prepped protein. Convenience means confidence in my kitchen, and I haven’t really had the heart to change it up until now. The Cookery School at The Grand opened this month and in my job I get to try a lot of amazing experiences - like this one. They’re offering a massive range of When I get to the cookery school, I can tell straight away what kind of day this is going to be. Homemade biscuits and fresh coffee are waiting on the counter and the other students on my course are already huddled around chatting excitedly about the menu. It’s going to be a good day. There’s a balance struck at the Cookery School that I didn’t know I needed until I saw it unfold in front of me. The fine line between stress and indulgence that comes with cooking beautiful things isn’t one I enjoy walking, but the brains at The Grand have taken the stress out: you don’t do any washing

evening, half and full day courses. You can learn to a cook a signature dish, or a three course meal in their straight-out-of-an-interior-design-magazine kitchen. I’ll be honest, I didn’t just want to go on an all-day cooking course, I NEEDED it. I had visions of it being a pivotal moment in the chapter: Cooking Great Food and Impressing Friends in my imaginary biography titled Krystal: Why is She so Damn Good at Everything?
up or measuring, every tool you could need is right there and there’s always an expert on hand to give you the reassurance you want when you’re not *quite* sure if ‘it’s ready to flip yet’. Andrew, our head chef and tutor, is a down to earth guy. He knows his stuff and talks us through the reasons why we do what we do when cooking. A lot of the rules he shares with us apply to more dishes than just the ones that we do today. Did you know that it’s the acid in lemon that a posset needs to set… You can’t go throwing apple juice in there, hoping for the same results. Won’t happen. To fry in deep oil, it needs to
be a minimum of 170 degrees, anything less will start to absorb the fat before it cooks. The ‘ahh’ moment hits me and I remember soggier times with fondness. Throughout the day we get to eat the three course meal we’ve painstakingly cooked: black pudding and apple scotch egg, pan fried sole with lemon and parsley butter and Yorkshire rhubarb and lemon posset. It goes without saying that it’s all AH-MAZ-ING and there’s plenty left over to take home, too.
THE FINAL DISH How do I feel now having completed a day at The Grand? I imagine that people look at me differently. This is a woman who can seriously cook. The day ends with me trotting out with my bag of goodies, a smug expression on my face and a feeling of competence for any future dishes I might attempt. I should thank Andrew and the team at The Cookery School: you’ve made me fall in love with my kitchen all over again and I can’t wait for the next culinary adventure.

YORK LIFE THE BORROWER Dear Daphne, My girlfriend has borrowed nearly two grand from me. We’ve been together for a year and have a good relationship, lending aside. It crept up on me through smaller amounts, £300 here and there for a new purchase or rent. I don’t always know where the money goes but recently I’ve started to mention that I need it back, as soon as she gets paid. When payday comes round she always has a poor excuse to avoid payment.
LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE
I haven't been paid a single penny back and don’t know what to do about it. I don’t want us to fall out, but I’m worried I might never see it again and it’s making me annoyed at her. It doesn’t sound like your girlfriend has an awful lot of respect for you or your money. First things first, you mustn’t lend her anymore money until she starts being able to pay you back. Explain that she’s taking this too far and you need the money because it’s owed to you. Is there an underlying issue she’s not telling you about? It’s strange to keep on needing to borrow lump sums of cash. Perhaps ask if you can help her with her finances, that way you can ensure she budgets in paying you back before she blows it all. In the meantime you need to confront the fact that she’s abused your good nature. Try and establish clear boundaries so that she understands what is acceptable when it comes to finances and your strained relationship. Good luck!
Dear Daphne, I’m growing really tired of a long time close friend. I’m sick of them telling me stories and then later letting out details that totally change the context of the whole story in the first place. I’m worried about how many things they’ve told me before and I’ve jumped to conclusions, when I’ve haven’t heard the truth. I don’t want to think badly of people who haven’t done anything wrong, and I’m starting to think that I don’t want to listen to my friend’s fabricated stories anymore. Every time she opens her mouth, I feel like rolling my eyes and it pains me to listen to things I simply don’t believe to be true anymore. What should I do? There’s two ways to go here. You either call your lying mate out on her grey areas and hope it discourages future fabrication, or you can try and cut the friendship off. It sounds like you’ve lost respect for your friend because of their tales. Respect is hard to earn back and trust, even harder. Do you think there’s a reason they feel they need to lie to you? Can you overlook this part of your friendship? Looking at the situation broadly, with a little bit less emotion, could serve you well. Lies aside, do you value other parts of your friendship? Could you just take their tales with a pinch of salt and move on? You know the answer to these questions. If it’s no, then you might want to consider putting some distance between you both. Life’s too short to spend time with people you don’t want to. You don’t have to spend your life listening to your mate’s warped version of the truth and you always have the option to leave. She also has the right to tell her own version of the truth, whether it’s factually accurate or not… It is what it is.

THIS MONTH: THE NORMAN HOUSE
In a city as ancient as York, claiming to be the oldest anything is a pretty significant boast. When saying something like that, you’d better be ready to step up and drop some truth bombs to confirm your claims. So, when a building proudly declares to be the oldest house in York, you’re probably not expecting to be able to walk inside, for free, right? Well you can. Kinda. What is referred to as The Norman House are the remains of a private dwelling that exist, in situ, down an alley off Stonegate. Seriously, go and have a gander today. Walk along the alley by 48/50 Stonegate and you'll arrive in an open courtyard, lined on two sides by very old looking stones. The two walls of the
house were rediscovered in 1939 and restored in 1969 by the York Civic Trust. It's just there, for anyone to see. WELL OLD And how old is the oldest house in York? Well, The Norman House was built between 1160-80 in the very swanky Norman style of stone. You see, in the 12th century most buildings that weren't churches, castles or cathedrals were mostly made from timber. The fact that the first occupant of this particular residence on Stonegate could afford an entire house made from stone was a sign that he or she was clearly loaded. But how do we know that it wasn't a church? Certainly, if you take a stroll to check out the house's remains, the most striking feature is the original window, which looks pretty church-like. However, archaeologists surmised that the building must have been a private house because of it – the window wasn't made to accommodate glass. A church's window would have been made to fit stained glass, but this window featured only a closing shutter and security bar.
TROUBLES Unfortunately, there might have been a very serious reason for that security bar. Although the records stating who built and occupied the house first have been lost, it is possible that the owner was Jewish. A very similar house still exists today in Lincoln, known as The Jew’s House. Jewish financiers were some of the richest people in England at this time, and enjoyed Royal protection thanks to their importance to the economy. William of Newburgh, a canon of the priory in Bridlington, said of Jewish financiers in York, “with profuse expense they had built houses of the largest extent in the midst of the city, which might be compared to royal palaces and there they lived in abundance and luxury almost regal.” However, antisemitic sentiment was rife, culminating in York with a riot in 1190 that led to the Jewish population of the city seeking shelter in the castle and then, tragically, committing mass suicide. There would have been a great need for security, both for the people within the house and the treasures and money potentially kept there.

The house was built in a way that suggested wealth, and not just because of the stone. The upper floor, marked by a line of red bricks still visible now, would have acted like a great hall and living space, while below that existed the crypt – perfect for stashing gold. Uniquely a toilet was discovered in the remains – a garderobe – something no ordinary citizen would have had.
YORK
BOWLER VINTAGE
MINSTER LIFE Although the house was built as a non-religious building, by 1376 it was owned by the clergy of York Minster. The building became the York residence of the Prebend of Ampleforth, one of the canons of the Minster who required a property close to the cathedral. From then on, The Norman House was very much The Minster’s House, as canon after canon called it their city dwelling The house would have originally enjoyed a clear view of Stonegate, with a long drive or path leading up to it, until centuries of development hid it from view. It is believed that most of the house was demolished in the 18th century, with two of the original walls being incorporated into surrounding structures. When these buildings were removed in 1939 the intricate stonework and window tracery were rediscovered.

The truly great thing about the remains are that they are still sitting there, where they were constructed 850 years ago, for all to see. The next time you’re wandering along Stonegate, pop by and take a look.

SPORT
Local Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.
I swear there’s a curse on Bootham Crescent. Naturally, I’ll be sad to see the back of a ground that pretty much looks the same as when my dad first took me in 1992 (aside from when they installed a water tanker in the late 90s). It will be the end of an era when the club moves into the new community stadium – but given the last four seasons, I think a fresh start and change will be welcomed. As for my theory of a curse; how else can you explain the club signing a striker (Joe Ironside) who scored 53 goals in two seasons in our league then precede to look like he had never put boots on when playing for York City? Even the manager, Steve Watson, not having the renowned ‘bounce effect’ with his first home game being a 4-1 defeat to Chorley. Come to think of it I don’t think Gary Mills, Martin Gray or Sam Collins had a winning start in their first games in charge at Bootham Crescent. Watson went one further losing 2-1 to Hereford in the following home fixture – after which I heard a supporter say ‘the problem is Watson can only bring one more player in on loan and Messi isn’t available on loan.’ Please note the curse theory clearly doesn’t apply to the excellent York City Knights.
Cheeky Chicken Cottage 24
I personally believe Watson to be a good appointment by the board, and the right man. He needs time to shape his squad and get his stamp on the team ready for the new stadium. And who knows – should rumours about exyouth team star and now Norwich City key man Ben Godfrey being linked with a £10 million move to Europe’s elite clubs be true, Watson may indirectly get a transfer boost should a suitable sell on clause have been inserted into his Norwich contract.
Speaking of curses and superstitions, Everton recently had a black cat run onto the pitch at Goodison Park during their home game with Wolves. Fair play to the Wolves official Twitter account who reported it as ‘a paws in the game to deal with a pitch invader, here’s the purrpetrator’ – with a picture of the little moggy. It took an age for them to finally get the cat off the pitch until presumably someone in the crowd was realised they were carrying a packet of Dreamies. LOCAL SPORTS It may feel like a lifetime ago to the York public that Henry Wharton was ripping up the boxing world, but professional boxing in the city feels like it’s on the up at the moment. Michael Fafera is two unbeaten with both coming inside the distance, with a third bout lined up in March. The next York boxer to put pen to paper and sign professional terms is featherweight prospect Cam Shaw from Huntington. A former All Saints RC School pupil, who now works as a Production Engineering Assistant at Portakabin, he signed a pro contract with established York British Boxing Board of Control Licenced Manager, Glenn Banks. Cam, who has very

good amateur pedigree behind him – including winning the elite Yorkshire ABA title, will be trained by experienced trainer Billy Dawson at the Tommy Coyle Academy, West Hull. Naturally, manager Banks is very excited to have signed up the highly-rated Shaw, telling Your Local Link: “I am very confident [that], working as a team, Cam’s professional career will be a successful one. [His] professional debut will hopefully be around May/June time, and I’m urging the York public to fully back Cam and give him the support he deserves”. Finally, the York City Supporters’ Trust are having a Q&A legends evening with Andy McMillan and Iain Dunn at Acomb Conservative Club on Tuesday 19th March. Entry is completely free, but donations are welcome.

BUSINESS
ON THE JOB MARKET We love everything local. Hell, it’s in our name. When it comes to York, we want all things local to thrive and come together – it’s pretty much our sole purpose. So we were really excited to hear about York College’s Exhibitor Marketplace, where local businesses will be looking out for new talent and job-hunters will be able to source their next opportunity. And it’s really special, because York College have never run anything quite like this before. Organisations will take over the atrium and first floor areas, promoting their business and available vacancies. If you’re ready to take your next career steps, then you certainly don’t want to miss out. As well as having the opportunity to make vital contacts with local businesses, and discover vacancies and apprenticeships alike, there will be plenty of other activities to help you on your way. You’ll be able to discover more about adult learning opportunities, receive careers advice, and join in with a programme of talks happening throughout the afternoon into the evening. These will include subjects such as understanding what apprenticeships are and how to get one; discovering what it’s like from the employer’s perspective, and what they’re looking for; and, with the HelpZone, how to complete an application form, make a CV and do well in interviews. n To find out more about this exciting event – whether you’re a local business wanting to share your vacancies, or you’re looking for your new career – get in touch with the Business Development Unit at York College by emailing businessdevelopment@yorkcollege.ac.uk or calling 770368.

APPLIANCE ALLIANCE The popularity of built-in kitchen appliances has grown, and they’ve now overtaken their freestanding counterparts in many product categories. So what should you do when you need to renew one of yours? How do you know you’re getting the right size for your kitchen, and what are the options if you want to change from freestanding to built-in? Here’s a look at two of the most popular categories: ovens and dishwashers. Both can be freestanding or built into your kitchen – and there are many options to pick from. DISHWASHERS If you currently have a freestanding dishwasher then it’s unlikely you’d replace it with a built-in model unless you were giving your kitchen an overhaul. Whilst the built-in, or ‘integrated’, and freestanding models fit into the same space, you need a décor door to cover the front of the built-in product, and your kitchen kickplate would usually run along under the built-in appliance. You won’t have either of these if your current model is freestanding. It’s possible to change, but we’d need to assess the job – and it can be hard to find a match for existing cupboards. Replacing an existing built-in product is much simpler. By measuring the product yourself we’ll be able to

show you a number of options to replace it. We always recommend a joiner to fit the door front back on and can arrange this for you.
OVENS If you want to replace your freestanding oven with a built-in one, you’ll have to have additional woodwork added into your kitchen. The reason many people consider this (and why built-in products have become so popular) is to put the oven at the right height. Freestanding cookers are close to the floor, making it difficult for some to access. Lifting the whole thing up with an integrated oven makes access a lot easier. You can also have a self-cleaning oven, a steam oven to lock the goodness into your food, or a meat probe to take the guesswork out of cooking the perfect medium-rare joint of beef. n If you need help to decide what to do when your appliance needs replacing, just give us a call on 628676 or pop into one of our branches. We have plenty of freestanding and built-in products on display, and can fit whichever one you choose.
TO SELL OR NOT TO SELL? The ‘will-they-won’t-they’ of a Brexit deal is hanging over us, but when it comes to the housing market this uncertainty needn’t hold you back from moving. The reasons people move are the same; whether Brexit happens with or without a deal. Moving house is a long-term decision, which will ride out any temporary blips. The scaremongering in the press is very biased towards the South East and London, which are being hit hard. Yorkshire continues to buck this trend with rising house prices and a healthy housing market. Ignore Brexit: if you want to move... life goes on! There aren’t enough properties on the market to satisfy demand, so there will be a buyer out there that wants your property. We sell properties

YOUR HOME & GARDEN
Spring into action Spring is almost upon us. And there’s no better time to get out into the garden – to enjoy the fresh air and sneak in some gentle exercise – by starting to plan, and plant, some colourful displays to enjoy over the forthcoming months. For an instant burst of colour, choose
plants that are at their best through spring – such as golden daffodils, tulips (which are available in an array of colours), and hyacinths to add some fragrance. Why not team them up with seasonal bedding like violas, pansies and primulas – all perfect for planting in patio
pots, window boxes and flower beds. These gardening activities of potting, watering and planting not only bring the reward of a beautiful spring display, but also you’ll be satisfying your creative needs and reaching a sense of achievement that you’ve created something enjoyable, which can have a great effect on our mental health and wellbeing. Not only is gardening a benefit to our mental health, it’s also excellent exercise too. If you’re planting or weeding, you’re also stretching and bending; which can keep you fit and flexible. If you want a more active task whilst gardening, then digging, raking, sweeping and mowing the lawn can raise your heart rate and burn off calories too. According to statistics, just one hour of active gardening can burn off around 250-500 calories.

Who needs to pay astronomical gym fees when you can get fit in your own garden?! Another task that can be done this spring is to plant up evergreen flowering shrubs such as camellia, holly and hebe, which can add colour and structure to your borders. Before planting, remember to prepare the soil thoroughly and enjoy the movement of digging, while adding organic compost to improve drainage and the composition of your soil and will help your plants flourish. So, spring into action and get your body and garden into shape for the year ahead

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask
Q.
This question is one that often gets asked about every year: can you recommend some slug-proof perennials please?
Slugs and snails undoubtedly have a voracious appetite when they discover a tasty plant. But what they devour in one garden they often nibble at in another. Some plants, such as many hostas, are always a gourmet meal for slugs and snails, and are readily consumed. Others, especially those with hard-textured, hairy, or poisonous leaves, are often relatively ignored. Here’s a selection of the most reliably slug- and snail-proof perennials for the garden. Alliums, or ‘Ornamental Onions’, are magnificent for group plantings. These bulbs have arching, strap-shaped leaves, and differently sized round heads in various colours of spangled flowers in summer. These are loved by bees and butterflies. Asters, or ‘Michaelmas Daisies’, form bushy clumps of leafy, slenderbranched stems, which are topped by broad heads of blue, pink or white yellow-eyed daisies in late summer and autumn.
CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
Bergenia, or ‘Elephants Ears’, have fleshy evergreen leaves and form a basal mound – above which, in spring, rise erect and fleshy stems bearing loose clusters of pink or white flowers. Geranium macrorrhizum, or ‘Cranesbill’, are adaptable and reliable semi-evergreens with lobed, aromatic leaves often flowering well into autumn. Clusters of pink to purple flowers appear in early summer. Helleborus niger, or ‘Christmas Rose’, are clusters of saucer-shaped white- or pink-tinted flowers, which open from winter to spring above the basal clump of divided, course-toothed evergreen leaves. Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’ ice plants are reliable and easy to grow, with mounds of grey-green leaves and fleshy stems topped by flattened heads of pink flowers. They pop up from summer to autumn and are loved by butterflies.
Q.
I have a shady area at the back of my garden, and I’d like to plant some ferns here. Please could you give me some advice about non-flowering perennials?
Ferns are easily the most gardenworthy, offering an exciting variety of shapes and heights for use as specimen plants, or in bold groupings. Most of the
following ferns are of medium to large size, and will thrive given humus-rich soil, moisture, and shade. For a large structural fern you could use ‘Dicksonia Antarctica’. Tree ferns are slow-growing architectural plants with spreading fronds above a thick trunk. They make striking plants. Dryopteris wallichiana wood ferns have erect fronds, which form a big, semi-evergreen shuttlecock and have dark scaly stalks. Its fronds grow taller if rich soil and shelter are provided. ‘Polystichum’ sword ferns can transform an otherwise dull corner or border once it’s established. Its laddered evergreen fronds will form a large, handsome clump. Dryopteris erythrosora, or ‘Japanese Red Shield Ferns’, are some of the most colourful of hardy ferns. Their coppery-red young fronds in spring and summer contrast with the dark green, overwintering, mature fronds. Athyrium niponicum, or ‘Red Beauty’, is a relative of the Japanese Painted Fern. It has a broad habit attractive, arching and triangular fronds of silverygreen, with bright contrasting stems and veins of burgundy-red. This fern is

Asplenium scolopendrium crispum, or ‘Hart’s Tongue Fern’, is a curiously attractive evergreen fern with strapshaped, wavy-margined shiny fronds – that gradually form a bold clump. They’re also ideal for the front of a shady border. I’d like to thank all my doctors and nurses at Hull Royal Infirmary, York District Hospital and White Cross Court for all the care they gave me through my recent illness. For my family and very close friends, your love was amazing. And all the get well cards – wow. Thank you, Chris x

GET SET Onions are one of the easiest vegetable crops to grow, especially if you plant them from ‘sets’. For any novice growers out there, ‘sets’ are dried baby onions grown the previous year and sold the following spring ready for planting.
A number of different types of onion sets are available. They’re often sold in packs of 50 but it’s also possible to buy them loose by weight, which usually gives better value. The variety I mainly use is Sturon, a tried and tested favourite that gives a good sized bulb that stores well. I sometimes also grow the unimaginatively named Setton as well as one called Centurion. An oldfavourite with many is Stuttgarter, which produces a flat-topped bulb. For red onions Red Baron is the best, although Karmen has also done well for me.
SET DOWN Once you’ve got some sets, don’t be in too much of a hurry to plant. Like many vegetables onions are biennial, flowering and setting seed in the second year of growth. It’s winter cold that induces seeding. To prevent sets sending up a flower head, instead of producing a bulb after planting, they’ll have been dried and stored away from cold winter weather. If you plant too

EXPERT
Tony Chalcraft early there’s a risk you’ll confuse the sets, exposing them to enough chill to mimic the effect of winter. The result will be lots of ‘bolters’, that is plants with impressive upright flower stalks but puny bulbs. I usually begin planting onion sets in the last week of March, but only if the weather is warmish and a cold spell isn’t forecast. I don’t plant all the sets at once, instead planting in batches up until mid-April. This reduces the risk of all the sets being affected by a cold snap. The red onions are always the last to be planted. These seem more prone to bolting than the standard types so it’s particularly important not to have them in the ground during unseasonal weather.
GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY Planting onion sets is easy providing the soil isn’t wet and sticky. It’s often advised sets are pushed into the soil
(make sure you get them all the right way up, blunt end downwards!) but on firm ground this might compact the soil beneath the set and inhibit rooting. I prefer to make a shallow drill (small groove in the soil) using a hoe or corner of the rake head. I then drop the onions in, spacing them 10-15cm apart. Drills or lines are set at 30cm spacing. Once in, the drill soil is drawn back around each set by hand – so they’re either just buried or only the tip of the neck peeps above the surface. Once you’ve got the sets in it’s worth checking after a few days that they haven’t been disturbed. Sometimes birds will tug the newly-planted sets out of the soil strewing then across the surface. If this is a problem, plant a little deeper so that the tip isn’t visible; or temporarily use a net as a deterrent. It usually takes two to three weeks for the sets to sprout green shoots. After this, apart from occasional weeding, you should be all set for an onion harvest in late summer.

JOIN THE CLUB BOULED OVER Here’s one we bet you haven’t come across before: Huntington Pétanque Club. That’s pronounced pay-tank. We’d never heard of it either. But it’s also known as boules, which we had heard of. The concept is very similar to that of English lawn bowls, and is a relaxing yet competitive sport for people of all ages and fitness levels. The aim of the game is to get your – or your team’s – boule, a hollow metal ball, closest to the jack, a small wooden ball. The Huntington group play every Thursday afternoon (as long as the weather agrees!) at Huntington Sports and Social Club on North Lane. It’s all for fun, and new players young and old are welcome. Don’t worry if you’ve got no experience either – whether you’re a pro or a complete novice you’re invited to take part. The first meeting will take place on 25th April 2019 – why not pop along? You don’t need to wear anything specific, and all equipment will be provided. n To find out more, call Kevin on 768381 or Sheila on 768849.
PLAIN SAILING As the weather begins to brighten and spring approaches, outdoor activities also start to pop up here and there. Whether you want to fly a kite or take up running – everything’s more enjoyable when the sun’s shining. And for members of the York Model Boat Club, taking to the water is certainly better when it’s not chucking it down. The group meet every Saturday, Wednesday and Sunday to sail all types of model boats on the lake at Laytham Camping and Caravan Park. The York Model Boat Club are a friendly and sociable group, and members are always on hand to offer advice, conversation and guidance. Whether you want to come along to sail your own boat, or you’d just like to watch, all are made very welcome. n To find out more about the group, their meetings, and their special Regattas, visit www.yorkmodelboatclub.co.uk.

AVIATION ADMIRATION Have you ever wanted to volunteer, but never quite known where to go or what to do? Well here’s one for you – the hugely popular Yorkshire Air Museum are on the lookout for Stewards! The Museum is situated on the former RAF Elvington – a former World War II airfield – and is repeatedly rated in the top 10 of over 190 Things To Do In York. Known throughout Europe as the Allied Air Forces Memorial, visitors come from all over the world to discover over 60 historic aircrafts and vehicles, and 15 permanent exhibitions. And, as the first people visitors encounter when they arrive, the Stewards have a huge role to play for each guest! The Stewards’ jobs are help explain everything the museum has to offer, as well as being on hand to help answer any questions that guests may have about the aircraft collection and buildings. However, don’t be put off if you lack a deep knowledge of aviation! YOU’RE NOT ALONE If you don’t have any children, and are of a certain age or in a committed relationship, then it’s quite possible you’ve been asked why that is. And the answer to that could be a number of things – including personal choice. Ageing Well without Children (AWwoC) are a social group that provide support for: • People who can’t have children • People who don’t want children • Adult children who can’t help older parents due to a disability or mental health • Adult children who live far away, or are estranged • Those who don’t want to ask their children for help. The group have just launched their brand new website, as well as publishing their Guide for Organisations to help tackle issues surrounding the increasing numbers of people ageing without children. If you’re interested in joining the group, they meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at The Cross Keys in Goodramgate. The next meeting is on Wednesday 13th March from 2-4pm, and includes a talk on Housing Options for Older People by Alice Walker and Sharon Homan. You’re also invited to pop along early for lunch! n Visit www.awwoc.org, email ageingwithoutchildren@gmail.com or call 07919 335680 for more information.

Howard Mosley is a father. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.
DAS KINDERFIEND Imagine, if you will, the ideal member of the Hitler Youth. You’re probably picturing a handsome, blonde haired boy of Scandinavian stock who is good with his hands and ready to take orders to do morally questionable things. I’ve got one of those. Now let’s be clear here; in no way am I encouraging my almost-six-year-old son to join a fascist youth movement. No. For a start, he would never wear a buttoned-up brown shirt, and he has great difficulty taking orders from anyone. He also wouldn’t like the fact that I’m not a member of the group, as he only really enjoys doing stuff with me. That’s why he excels at watching Netflix, flying drones, and laughing at farts. Three things the Nazis were

FOCUS I draw attention to my eldest son as I feel the other kids have stolen the limelight of late: the dancing, creative older girl, the baby with his adorable chubby cheeks, and the three-yearold with his psychic powers. Ezra, meanwhile, has been left out. So it’s time to focus on him. Das Kinderfiend. My wife and I call him that as he looks and acts like the character from a German horror story. The kind where a doughy faced blonde cherub leads
But it isn’t his superhuman strength that is most fascinating about the wee chap, it’s his totally intimidating intelligence. I mentioned his older sister earlier. She’s a complete space cadet: lovely, social, head in the clouds, dreamer. Despite being three years younger, I often watch

MEANIE He knows just what to say to get at her. With a simple word or phrase he can have his sister in tears, screaming that he’s “the worst meanie there ever was” and running out of the room. He then scoops up the remote and the TV is his. Victory. But his cunning goes beyond annoying his siblings, as he is genuinely very thoughtful and introspective. Often late at night, when I assume he’s fast asleep, he’ll turn over and ask, “Daddy, how will the sun die?” Then, after an hour-long discussion about Red Giants and helium, he nods, rolls over, and goes to sleep. He asks the big questions. Whereas his sister might concentrate on finding out what is for dinner that evening, Ezra needs to know “what happens in my brain when I sleep?” and “what made the earth?” Keeps me on my toes, that kid. Prior to Christmas, when the kids’ mountain of presents was growing bigger by the day, we had no choice but to hide them under a huge blanket in the corner of a room. Ezra would watch us carefully tuck the blanket down, ensuring nothing was visible, and utter “That’s very suspicious”. We’re certain he knows Santa Claus is a lie, while his sister has already penned her letter for this year. Yet, despite all this cleverness and Kinderfiend-ness, he’s still very much a little boy who needs cuddles. Ezra cuddles are the best, as long as you can still breathe and are able to reach your phone to call for help in case he lays completely on you. Saying goodbye to him requires at least nine repeated hugs and getting him off to sleep necessitates a verbal contract that you’ll love him forever (followed by a full explanation of what really caused World War One). HELPING CHILDREN
SNAP HAPPY York Child Contact Service is part of York Family Mediation Service, a charity providing support for families experiencing separation or divorce. At these times, children often feel anxious and confused, and may feel the breakup is their fault, especially when they are no longer able to spend time with one of their parents. The Contact Service offers a safe and welcoming environment for families needing a neutral venue for the non-resident parent to meet up with their children. Last year, we helped 55 children of all ages in this way. Run by a combination of paid staff and volunteers, funding comes mainly from client fees and small grants from other charities. HOW YOU CAN HELP To keep our crucial service running, we need: • Financial support via ongoing sponsorship from local companies or organisations – could you make York Child Contact Service your charity of the year? • Other financial support in the form of one-off donations because even smaller
amounts could really make a difference – please make cheques payable to ‘York Family Mediation Service’ as our umbrella organisation. • Time – could you spare one or two Saturdays per month to volunteer with us? Because of the nature of our work, potential volunteers are required to undergo an enhanced DBS clearance and provide two references. • Donations of activities and games for older children and teenagers – we have lots of toys suitable for babies and younger children, but some of our families have older children. We would welcome donations of games and activities, including electronic equipment and games consoles, which parents and older children up to the age of 18 can enjoy together. n If you can help in any of these ways, or require further information about our work, please contact: Amy Bayliss, Manager, York Child Contact Service Tel: 07904 586206 Email: ccc.york@googlemail.com
Last year, the Special Needs Activities and Play Provision for York (SNAPPY) launched their Foil for SNAPPY campaign – collecting foil, scrap metal, drinks cans and cables. Their total collections in 2018 came to an incredible 2926kg – raising a whopping £1583.76 from people’s rubbish! Not just that, but they then received £323 in donations from scrap metal taken directly to L. Clancey & Sons in Murton. This brought the grand total to a showstopping £1906.76!
The collection will continue into 2019 and every penny goes towards improving the lives of children and young people with disabilities and special needs. To take part, bring your clean foil, cans and cables to one of SNAPPY’s 24/7 recycling banks or indoor community recycling points. n Catch them on Twitter @foilforsnappy or visit www.thesnappytrust.org for more information.

HAVE A HOME? THESE CUTIE PIES NEED ONE. CHARLIE
Charming chap Charlie came into the centre because his needs weren’t being met, however all he wants is a snuggle and to be a lap dog. He’s a big boy, and so his owner will ideally need to be experienced in large breeds - and strong! He’s a gentle giant and looking for his new loving home. Will it be yours?
NIBBLES This little lady joined the centre when her previous owner could no longer look after her. She loves going for walks and playing with her toys, and would love to be part of a family again. She’ll need to be the only pet in the house, but can live with children of junior school age or over. n Call RSPCA York and District Branch on 654949 or visit www.rspca-yorkhome.org.uk

HEALTH & BEAUTY YOUR FOR FAMILY YOU
DERMAPEN Q&A
This month, resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri answers any questions you might have about the Dermapen (aka micro-needling). Do you have sun-damaged or acne-scarred skin? Would you like to reduce the appearance of wrinkles or stretch marks? If so, it’s worth considering a Dermapen treatment for smoother, brighter, and more youthful skin. The Dermapen is specifically designed to improve the appearance of skin with wrinkles, stretch marks, acne scars and sun damage. WHAT DOES DERMAPEN DO? Dermapen can be used on the face and body to reduce the visibility of lines, wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, and sun damage. It does this by causing mild damage to your skin, triggering a healing process that rejuvenates the skin and encourages collagen production. WHAT DOES THE DERMAPEN TREATMENT INVOLVE? To begin with, your therapist will use a topical anaesthetic cream to numb your skin before treatment commences. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the Dermapen will be used over your

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED? We generally recommend a course of four treatments (roughly one treatment every six weeks). DOES IT HURT? Not very much - the anaesthetic helps to minimise any discomfort caused by the micro-needles. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE? One Dermapen session lasts for around 60 minutes, although this may
vary depending on which part of your body we treat. For example, a hand or neckline treatment will take less time than a facial treatment. WHAT’S THE DOWNTIME? The Dermapen treatment comes with a very minimal recovery period; you will be able to resume your daily life almost straight away. You may notice some redness, but this should subside within 24 hours of the procedure. WHO IS THIS PROCEDURE SUITABLE FOR? Dermapen is suitable for all skin types. However, it can cause sensitive skin
Note: The Dermapen is unsuitable for pregnant/ breastfeeding women. Full list of side effects, cautions and contraindications will be discussed at face to face consultation.
