EDITOR’S LET TER

ON YOUR MARCH… GET SET… GO! take a slap in the face or getting clipped by a supermarket delivery van, but Claire from Editorial beat me to that one. Get well soon Claire, thanks for stealing my thunder.

March is finally here. While I’ve previously been known as Winter’s Number One Fan, Lover of Snowflakes, Owner of a Million Jackets, Protector of January - that’s simply not been the case this year.

Spring is full of promise and new beginnings. We’re all settled in at the new Your Local Link office and it’s Saint Patrick’s Day, AKA Designer Nick’s favourite day of the year. “It’s better than Christmas,” is what he’ll tell you if you give him chance.

Nope. This year has been drawn out, wishy-washy and not particularly notable for anything other than Brexit and the Coronavirus. I’ve been waiting for something definitive to bring it to a close: heavy snow, bright skies, pay day... Honestly at this stage I would

The sales team, who are notoriously

cold blooded, will soon start kicking off about the temperature in the open plan set up, and the next panic will be the fact that our office has one solitary window. But I don’t mind, bring me daffodils, optimistic plans for al fresco dining, and sandals. I’m so ready. If you’ve been struggling through winter, and are ready to come alive again, then I’ve got some good news for you…

out of every moment you have in York. So this month whether you fancy winning tickets to Living North, need a decent plumber or want to get some fun events pencilled into your diary you’ll find what you need on one of these 80 pages. Have a good one!

This magazine only has one purpose and that’s to help you make the most

A Change is as Good as a Rest Every month, when I prepare to write my monthly column, I sit down with a notebook and my favourite Spotify playlist and argue with myself for a good hour over what it should be about. Then Krystal tells me no one wants to read about my dog’s ability to give me his paw (even though it’s really, really cute) or why I think the televising of the Eurovision Song Contest should be a designated Bank Holiday. So it’s back to the notebook and a non-Eurovision playlist. This month however, I didn’t even need to think about it. We’ve moved offices. I mean, this is a big deal. This isn’t like the time when I got upgraded from the dodgy half-desk next to the toilets to a proper wooden desk complete with my actual own chest of drawers. This is a real move.

From our humble offices in Haxby to our brand new premise in Clifton Moor. And while this has been an incredibly exciting experience for all of us – as it means brilliant things for the company and gives us a home where everyone can finally come together under one roof – it’s not been without its stressful moments. From the dreaded desk tidies (why did I keep a crumpled Post-It note with an unknown phone number on it?) to the fridge clear outs; the impossible decisions you have to make while playing keep-it-or-bin-it, and now, the unpacking. But actually, this move has really got me thinking – because it genuinely is a big deal, isn’t it? Whether you’re moving offices, moving house, or even moving countries – permanently leaving a place in which you spend a lot of time really does affect you in ways you might not expect.

Change doesn’t always come easily to everyone, and we should all be given our time when it arises – because there’s no shame in finding it hard at first. Obviously a change as drastic as this can only be compared with one thing: Brexit. And I’m obviously not overreacting. I decided to commemorate our move by looking back at some of the most memorable changes that our country’s been through over the years. And they’re all as major as our office move (okay, maybe a little bit more important). SMOKING BAN Can anyone actually remember when people were allowed to smoke in public buildings? Would you fall off your chair in shock if I told you it came into effect as recent as 2007? At the time there was major uproar over people having to go outside to designated smoking areas – with arguments that it would put pubs and restaurants out of business. But what happened? Venues continued to operate and the amount of smokers reduced. Win-win. Y2K BUG Okay, so we didn’t exactly choose for the year to switch from the 1900s to the 2000s. But we did massively stress that the entire world would crumble to smithereens once technology got wind of it all. From worries over computers

COLUMNIST

Claire Pulpher

‘doing a HAL’ on us mere humans (if you haven’t seen 2001: A Space Odyssey then you won’t know what I’m on about there) to everything simply coming to a grinding halt, we feared the we feared the calendars changing from 1999 to 2000. But hey, it was fine. No robots have tried to kill us. Yet. PARLIAMENT STREET FOUNTAIN I’ll leave you with a light-hearted one: the utter turmoil that 90s/00s teenagers had to suffer when the fountain was removed from Parliament Street. Where to meet your friends on a Saturday afternoon? The fountain. Where to sit and eat your lunch while on your break? The fountain. Where to pour washing up liquid when you wanted to be the funny kid in school? The fou—I mean no, not one bit should such behaviour be encouraged. Nor is it even slightly funny. So while it’s important to be kind and allow ourselves to adjust to change, it can often be a bit like a yappy dog – its bark usually way worse than its bite. Everything is always okay in the end. That includes you, Brexit.

Certainly, things might not be exactly the way you want them to be, but you’ve made a lot of progress, and the future vista should be looking significantly different now to the way it looked back in March of 2019. might be facing some life-changing decisions, you’re in a stronger position to make them – and there is the awareness that things have shifted, and that time is now on your side. So, with this last point in mind, bide your time, and don’t be in too much of a rush. You can hit your goals and targets, and you can achieve what you want to achieve; but not in the space of a few weeks and certainly not all at once.

March 19th should be a significant date for reunions and celebrations. You will enjoy the celebrations but those reunions may be something of a double-edged sword. The last week of the month may be something of a reflective period as you look back over the years gone by, but nevertheless you’ll be encouraged by your experiences and achievements, which gives birth to greater

determination to define the pathway of your own future – both the mid- and long-term. Social invitations between the 23rd-29th should be accepted, even if you aren’t brimming over with immediate enthusiasm. These invitations bring you into contact with influential people who can be useful in the time ahead. Particularly watch out for links with the star signs of Taurus and Cancer.

With the advent of the early spring there is a lightening and brightening of your moods, and a burst of enthusiasm for all things artistic and creative. There may be more money going out than there is coming in, but planning in advance will budget for this – so no huge crises or dramas. Partnerships and relationships are relatively stable and predictable.

If the ground seems to be moving beneath your feet, enjoy the sensation. Situations are changing in your favour and there are some exciting moves afoot. Throughout March you get a clearer vision of your mid- and long-term future, and knowing what you’ve got to do and when you’ve got to do it by gives you a boost of clarity and confidence. Don’t expect 100% co-operation from friends and family, but still make a point of marching to the beat of your own drum and trust in your own judgement.

JUL - 22ND AUG

Despite the springtime sunshine, this could be something of a low-key month as you wrestle with a number of ongoing problems that are mostly, but not entirely, associated with complicated emotional relationships. The way out of this quagmire is to be brutally honest: (a) with other people, and (b) with yourself. You can have the apple or the pear, but you can’t have both.

Virgo 23

RD

AUG - 22ND SEP

The biggest problem you’re likely to encounter this month is tiredness, possibly caused by interrupted sleep patterns and compounded by overworking. On the plus side, finances should be quite sound – but this doesn’t do you much good if you’re too knackered to enjoy spending what you’ve got. Take a step backwards. Take up yoga. Learn to relax!

Libra 23

NOV DEC

Sagittarians work on two levels throughout March, and what is being “said” does not always represent what is being “thought”. There is some advantage in playing your cards close to your chest, and keeping your innermost thoughts secret – at least for the time being. You are not feeling very secure, so concentrate on building stronger foundations.

CAPRICORN

22ND DEC - 19TH JAN

You settle nicely into new work routines and any job problems seem to be caused by technical glitches rather than anything more serious. Finances probably come under some pressure, so March is not the best month to go on expensive spending sprees. Possibly some disagreement within emotional relationships concerning financial priorities.

AQuarius20

TH

JAN - 18TH FEB

There is a vibrancy of romantic and sexual excitement for younger members of the sign, but those slogging through their 40s and middle years may have to monitor their energy levels and avoid all-night parties. This is especially true for career-orientated males who seek to hit financial targets rather than reap the joys of romantic harvests.

Who you know and being in the right place at the right time may be more important than any professional skills you might have, so recognise this fact and do all you can to capitalise on it. Probably a high degree of frustration on the work scene, and although spouses and partners might be supportive, you end up feeling that they still don’t quite “get it”! So maybe you need to tell them!

TimeTravel THIS MONTH: LA PIAZZA Love history? So do we. Our Time Travel experts have got the lowdown on some of York’s most notorious people and places. We know what you’re thinking: why would we choose a humble Italian restaurant as our subject for this month’s Time Travel? Because, as is the case with many buildings in York, it’s not just a humble Italian restaurant. The building at number 45 Goodramgate has quite a colourful history – and it’s not just red, white and green. So put your feet up, grab a cuppa, and get ready to learn all about the secrets behind this iconic property – including a chilling tale about one of York’s saddest ghost stories. It’s no surprise that this beautiful Grade I listed building was said to have been built in the late 15th or early 16th century. Its three storeys jut outwards as they rise, and the timber framing on the white walls gives it a truly unique appearance. Owned by the York Conservation Trust since 1957, 45 Goodramgate existed for many years

18

as a café before becoming La Piazza. And that journey has also reached its end now that business owner Emilio Comito and his family have, at the time of writing, put the restaurant up for sale – with a leasehold starting price of £150,000. But its deeper history holds far darker secrets than this.

A DARK PAST Allow us to share with you the tale of Marmaduke Buckle. Said to be one of the saddest ghost stories to roam the streets of York, the story of Mr. Buckle has become a real talking point for ghost walks and tourists alike. Marmaduke Buckle was said to have been born in 1697, to a wealthy family; and lived in 45 Goodramgate. However, Marmaduke was disabled – and unfortunately, disabilities in the 1700s weren’t as well received or

understood as they are today. Because of that, Marmaduke’s name was tainted by the people of York. The fact that poor Marmaduke was handicapped meant that he was accused of witchcraft, and it was said that his ailments were works of the devil. He’d had enough of being tormented, so Marmaduke eventually retreated upstairs; to look down over the people of Goodramgate.

It became too much for Mr. Buckle though, and he sadly turned to suicide. After etching his name, date of birth and date into the wall of his room, he hanged himself on a nearby beam. He was said to have been just 18 years old. Oh, and these carvings are still visible to this day. Harrowing or what? As with any dark tale, it’s rumoured that the ghost of Marmaduke Buckle still roams 45 Goodramgate. People have

YORK LIFE

reported flickering lights and slamming doors; and it’s also said that he haunts the adjacent Snickleway Inn pub.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS This beautiful building certainly has lots of scope for a unique future. Its architecture is stunning regardless of its history – but the fact that it’s genuinely of

its era makes it even more authentic. This premise has plenty of talking points. And now, with the imminent sale of La Piazza, it seems the current chapter is coming to an end for 45 Goodramgate – and more history is to be made. Emilio isn’t doing things by half though – the man behind the pizza is selling his business through specialist property business advisor, Christie & Co, to enjoy retirement after 25 years. Simon Burbridge, Business Agent for Christie & Co, says: “La Piazza presents a very exciting opportunity for new owners to either continue serving excellent genuine Italian food or take this fantastic city centre building and create something new and exciting along Goodramgate. “This sort of building, coupled with its history and success is sure to attract huge amounts of interest. We have seen a surge in the numbers of leasehold hospitality businesses being bought and sold in recent times and this should be no different.” So, could you make history? Maybe you could be the talk of a future edition of Your Local Link’s Time Travel…

WANDERER WALKING WITH THE

Directions

1 Facing towards the cross on York Street in Dunnington go left uphill along Church Street. Follow the street as it bends left and right passing the church to Eastfield Lane on the right. Go down this lane with houses on the right and the cemetery on the left. After about 300 metres climb a stile on the left to follow the footpath, heading towards a telegraph pole, across the field. At the far side climb a further stile and turn left on the tarmac of the old road, now a layby, to reach the main road by metal gates. Cross with care and walk left a short distance along the verge to a track.

left on the road (take care - some fast-moving traffic) for about 400 metres until a smaller road on the right signed ‘Warthill’.

3 The route now follows this pleasant minor road, Rudcarr Lane, all the way to Warthill. Approaching the village there’s a double bend and bridge over a ditch, after which houses start on the left and the road arrives at T-junction. Go left here following the main road around a bend to the pond.

4 Turn right by the pond passing the Agar Arms pub (currently closed) to take the left fork down a track signed as a public footpath. Follow this pleasant track as it curves towards a house ahead 2 Take the track with a hedge to the right but in in the trees. At the house keep the wall/outbuildings about 150 metres turn left at a footpath sign heading to the right to emerge into fields. Go ahead on a toward the end of a hedge visible across the field. grassy strip, then bend right with a hedge on the At the hedge end turn right for a short distance to left to arrive at a tarmac lane on the edge of Gate a telegraph pole, but then head left along the field Helmsley. beyond with a hedge and ditch to the right. At the 5 Go left on the lane (the Duke of York pub is just end of the field cross the footbridge and continue with a hedge still on your right to emerge onto a car to the right), which runs parallel to the main road and wide track. Turn right here to the road ahead. Turn passes the church, to a T-junction.

Start the walk from the centre of Dunnington by the cross at the junction of York Street, Common Road and Church Street. Dunnington is just over four miles from central York. From the Grimston Bar interchange take the Hull Road (A1079) soon turning left onto York Road, which leads to York Street, where there should be adequate street parking. Bus no. 10 runs every 30 minutes from Piccadilly Mon-Sat daytime (less frequent on Sunday). East Yorkshire routes 45 and 46 also serve the village. Alight at the Greyhound stop in York Street.

Refreshments Dunnington has a pub, the Cross Keys, the Old Butcher’s Shop Café (closed Monday) and Pattacakes bakery (closed Sunday). The Duke of York pub and The Balloon Tree café (open every day) both in Gate Helmsley provide opportunities for halfway point refreshment.

What to see Despite being engulfed by suburban development, Dunnington has a range of interesting buildings in the streets radiating from the cross. The route out of the village, and again approaching Gate Helmsley, ascends modest hills offering good views, the former back to York and the Minster, the latter towards the Wolds. After passing the little known Brockfield Hall (private) the route comes to Warthill, an attractive village with an unusual nineteenth century Gothic church. The return on Route 66 follows Scoreby Lane, lined by young trees, before approaching Dunnington where thick hedges and adjacent woodland provide a good habitat for a range of wildlife.

Getting there

DUNNINGTON AND ROUTE 66

Starting from the old cross in Dunnington this route heads across fields to follow a quiet lane into Warthill with its church, pub (currently closed) and pond. Heading across a few more fields it passes the well-known Balloon Tree Farmshop & Café, to pick up the Route 66 cycle track. Heading down a tree-lined lane and then across farmland, this provides an easily followed and stile-free stroll back to Dunnington. The full route is about seven miles, but can be roughly halved by finishing at Gate Helmsley (or the Balloon Tree) and returning to Dunnington on bus no. 10. Apart from the section across fields near the beginning, this is a remarkably mud-free route making use of quiet lanes and the generally well-surfaced cycle track.

6 The route now continues down this lane, tree-lined at first, passing several houses and farms; then becoming a bridleway but still part of Route 66. After nearly two kilometres, take a tarmac track that branches off to the right (Route 66 sign) towards buildings. DISCLAIMER: Walks are undertaken at your own risk. Due care must be taken in following the walk, particularly after poor weather. Whilst every care is taken in compiling the description changes may have occurred since publication. Neither the walk author nor Your Local Link can accept any responsibility for errors or omissions.

7 Where the tarmac ends, go to the side of the buildings as signed to follow the obvious track across fields. Ignore a bridleway to the right at a bend continuing on the well-used cycle route soon with woodland to the left. At a crossing track go through the gate ahead eventually passing the buildings of Hagg Farm. 8 Continue on the obvious track curving right and left. Soon the track becomes a tarmac road with the houses of Dunnington to the right. On reaching the playing field on the left, bear right across the grass to pick up a tarmac footway by the houses. This merges into Common Lane, coming in from the left, which you follow right back to the cross in the centre of the village. View to Wolds

Local Who said the FA Cup is dead? Try telling that to the Newcastle fan who ran down two flights of stairs flashing his boy bits about to celebrate scoring a late winner against Oxford United. I’m still trying to work out a couple of things from that now infamous incident. 1. Whether he was aware that Oxford United are two leagues below Newcastle, i.e. it wasn’t the Champions League Final; and 2. Whether that advert for Viagra on the advertising hoarding had been photoshopped in. Unfortunately that will be the last FA Cup game he will be at, now that he’s banned from attending live football matches. Some say it serves him right for being cocky. So whilst the likes of Liverpool continue to play their Under 12s to ensure they get well rested up – in case they get so tired they slip on a 22-point lead in the Premier League – Spain’s equivalent cup, the Copa Del Rey, has had some interesting developments as Ibiza recently drew the mighty Barcelona. To be fair, they had a pretty decent line up with David Guetta in goal and the Swedish House Mafia as the front three. Having done the likes of Bradford Park Avenue and Curzon Ashton this season, Ibiza sounds like a slightly better away day. Onto York City now and March is the penultimate month of the regular season – and who knows; a fruitful February for

24

the Minstermen, coupled with King’s Lynn Town imploding with the pressure of the title race, and the endof-season play-offs might not be necessary. Certainly the two March fixtures (whether they’re at Bootham Crescent or LNER Community Stadium) against Altrincham on Saturday 14th and Blyth Spartans on Saturday 28th will be must-win games. Altrincham have already won twice at Bootham Crescent this season in the FA Trophy and the FA Cup, so no doubt Steve Watson will be hoping to avoid an unwanted hat-trick. Whilst York City’s promotion destiny is not in their hands, supporters can reflect on

the glory years with York Hospital Radio’s spin-off podcast series Hospital Ball, which I’m unashamedly plugging series two of having worked on it with producer Keith Lea – who’s volunteered at York Hospital Radio for over 50 years. We’ve recorded interviews with 90’s stalwart midfielder Nigel Pepper, loyal clubman Daniel Parslow and former striker Richard Cresswell – who discusses both spells at the club, as well as his time with England Under 21’s and Leeds United. Amongst other things. These are free to listen to at hospitalball.podbean.com. LOCAL NEWS So, in your youth you loved your football, but thought your playing days were well and truly over? ball and join PlayFootball for its sloweddown version of the ‘beautiful game’. Walking Football has become a national phenomenon over the last few years with, it’s thought, tens of thousands of participants now playing regularly across the country. Open to all but particularly suitable for players over 50 – ladies as well as gentlemen – PlayFootball now hosts two morning walking football sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week; kicking off at 10am. Played in a friendly and empathetic spirit by a group of mixed ability players, you don’t need to be a latter-day Bobby Moore or Harry Kane in the making to enjoy walking football. In fact, most players haven’t laced up their boots for 30 or even 40 years before taking it up, but now take part at least once a week. So given that your first session is free, and that the inherent benefits of regular activity with like-minded people is well established, why not come along to try walking football out for yourself and see what all the fuss is about? There’s even a cuppa on the house after every session.

Still time to plan for tax year 2019-20 Joanne Lyon - Business Owner

For many, the end of the self-assessment season signals time to review your personal and business affairs in order to optimise your personal tax and capital gains tax position. Here at TMC Accountancy we pride ourselves on our personal service and like to treat all our clients as unique. From sole traders through to larger businesses we are responsive, effective, and competitively priced. If you have not yet considered your tax planning options for the 201920 tax year, now is a good time to pick up the phone and speak to us. We are offering a complimentary annual tax review for the first 10 people that contact us. Here are our top tips you might want to consider prior to 5th April 2020: • Make use of your ISA allowance of £20,000. • Give your children a head start by making contributions of up to £4,368 per child into Junior ISAs. • Where possible, consider utilising your pension annual allowance. Unused allowances can be carried forward from the three previous tax years if you are already a member of a pension scheme.

OAKMOOR

• Higher earners should take steps to reduce their taxable income. This can be achieved by making personal pension contributions or charitable donations. These can help by:

1. Avoiding the loss of child benefit which is gradually withdrawn for those with incomes above £50,000. 2. Reducing income levels to the threshold of £100,000 at which the personal allowance starts to be withdrawn 3. Bringing income down to below the additional rate band which starts at £150,000

• If you are married or in a civil partnership, you may want to consider the transferable marriage allowance if you or your spouse are not fully utilising the full personal allowance and neither are higher rate taxpayers. • Consider whether to bring forward a sale of capital assets before 5 April 2020 in order to take advantage of the capital gains tax annual exemption of £12,000 for this tax year if this has not already been utilised.

BUSINESS

The Marketing Mogul.

Julie Wilson, straight-talking Yorkshire financial planner

Let’s Grow In last month’s Your Local Link magazine, we introduced you to our Marketing Mogul – who’s here to give you his top tips on bettering your business. Whether you’re a small start-up, a one-man band, or a medium to large company; you can rely on us for simple and effective advice. This month, our Mogul’s talking about how to grow your business. There’s always room for growth, and it’s not always the obvious stuff that can help with this – you can take our word for it… 1. Refer. This might sound counterintuitive, but actually referring enquiries to different companies or businesses can be very productive. It’s better to be really good at a few things than a ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ – so know your strengths, be the very best at them,

and don’t risk an average response from a customer you shouldn’t have taken on. 2. Talk to your team. Your colleagues aren’t just there to perform the tasks you set them – they’re there to support you and be a part of your business’ growth. Ask for their opinions from the ‘front line’, empower them by allowing them to solve their own problems (and supporting their decisions), and motivate them with gratitude and positivity. 3. Look after yourself. As a business owner, it’s very easy to put your own personal needs to one side and allow the business to override things like holidays and time off. However, your physical and mental wellbeing is vital – and if you’re not running at 100% then neither will your business.

If you’d like some more top marketing tips and tricks then get in touch with us at info@yourlocallink.co.uk, or give us a call on 01904 767881.

As I write my column this month it’s Valentine’s Day, and there’s the promise of a steak dinner in the Todd household. But to make things even better – not only is it Friday but we are also experiencing the first decent weather day in a while as storm Ciara ends and Dennis has yet to show his face. Oh happy day! “Is romance dead?” I asked the checkout assistant at the supermarket early this morning. She replied that she ‘didn’t think so’ – roses had been selling reasonably well and her husband had even given her some money to “get something nice” for herself. Well if that doesn’t say “I love you” then I don’t know what does?! I then started wondering if the romance was dead in electrical retail. A peculiar question you might say – but I’m genuinely concerned that, particularly with the growth of online retail, some of the glamour has been removed. Retail has become a bit of a battleground

Dean’s Garden Centre grows funds for mental health It’s been a blossoming year of fundraising for Dean’s Garden Centre who donated over £16,000 to Yorkbased charity York Mind. The family run garden centre had plenty of fun raising the funds in 2019, too. There was a sell-out brass band concert at Stockton-on-Forest Village Hall, in-house quiz nights and collecting tins in store. with the likes of Amazon trying to undercut traditional retailers by doing what Amazon does well: a picture of a product, a price, and a promise of a speedy delivery. Independent retailers have had to catch up quick with websites that are responsive, and prices every bit as cheap as the mass merchants online. Has that taken our eyes off the ball of providing not only cheap products with a same-day delivery pledge, but also a great shopping experience if you want to browse new products on the shop floor? Well I hope not! At Herbert Todd’s we’re displaying more fabulous products than ever, and doing more great in-store demonstrations all in the hope that you can find, and fall in love with, your new appliance or amazing new kitchen! Please call in when you’re passing, even if it’s just for a free cup of coffee – we’d love to discuss with you our passion for all things electrical retail.

MARCHING ON

The weather in March can be very changeable. From warm spring sunshine to heavy snow, it often dictates what you can and can’t get on with in the garden. The timing of many monthly tasks really depends on how mild the weather is. Finish digging over empty borders – any late frosts will help break down heavy clay soils. This is a good time to apply a general purpose fertilizer to replace the nutrients washed away by winter rains. A good mulch of leaf mould, well-rotted farmyard manure or any other organic matter can be applied on established borders before any annual weeds start to appear. This also helps to seal any moisture. March is a good time to prune your Hybrid Tea, Floribunda and Climbing roses. Start by removing any stems that have been damaged by the winter weather and also any badly positioned stems – they’re ones that are pointing in the wrong direction or are going to rub on other stems, causing wounds and allowing infection in. Reduce any remaining stems back by half, and prune just above an outward facing bud with the cut sloping away from the bud.

Late flowering varieties of Clematis such as ‘The President’ and ‘Jackmanii’ can also be pruned now to prevent them from becoming woody. It also encourages flowering from a lower level.

A PLACE IN THE SUN

It’s time to start off summer flowering bulbs, such as Dahlia and Gladioli, which can be put into pots and kept in a frost-free place. This gives them a good head start before planting them into the garden. Sow seeds of bedding plants, sweet peas and tomatoes in heated glasshouses or propagators. Any seedlings you have sown earlier can be pricked out now, taking care to handle the seeds by the leaves not the stems. If mild, hardy annuals can be started off in pots or sown direct at the end of the month.

If the weather is mild and favourable then the lawn could have its first cut towards the end of March. Make sure that the blades are set high for the first couple of cuts. General pond maintenance can begin such as raking dead leaves and other debris out of the water. Thin out and cut back any dead stems from your pond plants, introduce new ones as well. Clean out and start any filters running. If it’s mild and the fish are active then you can begin feeding them again. Start off with wheatgerm and return to normal food as March progresses.

If you have the space to keep plants heated you could opt to buy plug plants from your garden centre. This is a good way to start off Geranium, Impatiens and Begonia as the young plants could be put straight into hanging baskets to get them established better. Don’t forget to check any plants over-wintering in there on a regular basis for signs of pest or disease. Open doors and vents on mild days to encourage good air circulation.

YOUR HOME & GARDEN

Sweet ‘n’ Sour Something that’s often overlooked when growing fruit and vegetables is the importance of soil pH. It’s often not appreciated that many crops struggle to absorb nutrients if this isn’t right. If the pH level is too high or, more likely, too low, some crops will never thrive – no matter how much manure or compost you lavish on them. I’m sure you’ll know all about pH from school, but if you weren’t paying attention in chemistry lessons then pH, to quote the Oxford Dictionary online, is: “a figure expressing the acidity or

alkalinity of a solution on a logarithmic scale on which seven is neutral, lower values are more acid, and higher values more alkaline”. More simply, or in the parlance of the old gardeners, alkaline soils are ‘sweet’ and acid ones ‘sour’. Although this doesn’t mean that sweet is necessarily best. In fact, when it comes to fruit and vegetables, a slightly acidic or sourer soil, one with a pH at about 6.5, suits the majority of crops.

Determining the pH of soil can be tricky. The underlying geology offers a clue. On chalk or limestone bedrock alkaline soils predominate. In the York area, away from the Wolds, there are few naturally very alkaline soils. On the whole local soils tend to be neutral or slightly acidic. Only on thinner, sandy, soils is there a tendency to higher acidity. These are often indicated by vegetation, especially garden shrubs. Thriving rhododendrons

or azaleas are a tell-tale sign that soil conditions may be too acidic for some fruit and vegetables. Soil pH can also be affected by how soil has been managed over the years. It’s sometimes supposed that repeated applications of compost and manure increases acidity but the scientific evidence for this is thin. Only if the compost includes a lot of naturally acidic materials, for example grass clippings or conifer needles, does it have much impact. Conversely some compost, for example spent mushroom compost, can be very alkaline. There’s also the possibility that alkalinity may have been increased accidentally. I’ve come across several allotments with high pH levels, perhaps a result of overenthusiastic liming by past plot holders. Overall, unless you’re aware of acidic conditions nearby or have problems with some crops, it’s probably not worth worrying too much about pH levels. If you have concerns, testing the soil is an option. Expensive laboratories will do this for you, but do-it-yourself kits are available from garden centres. Meters using a probe are the easiest to use, but are said to give less reliable results. When I test, which is rare, I prefer kits

EXPERT

Tony Chalcraft where soil is put into a test tube, to which a solution is added. This causes a colour change that’s matched to a chart showing the pH level. Easy in theory, but in my experience the colour is often more muddy brown than one of the rainbow shades on the chart! Another way to gauge pH is to ‘read’ your crops. If those that prefer a relatively high pH – such as beetroot, leeks, onions and spinach – perform poorly, and there’s no evidence of pest and disease problems, a low pH may be to blame. Alternatively, if your potatoes are always scabby; or fruit bushes, especially blueberries and raspberries, develop chlorosis (yellow leaves with prominent green veins), conditions may be too alkaline. For more information on soil pH and the use of lime to correct acidity, check out the RHS website at www.rhs.org.uk/advice/ profile?pid=239 and www.rhs. org.uk/advice/profile?pid=144

Got a gardening question?

Ask CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES

BROWN NURSERIES

If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk or call Chris on 766266. Q. I have different types of Clematis in my garden. Could you advise me on how to prune them please? Clematis are unbeaten in their long period of flowering with species flowering in almost every month of the year. Some spring-flowering species and cultivars are vigorous and excellent for rapidly covering buildings, old trees and pergolas. Less rampant cultivars often display large magnificent blooms from early summer to autumn, in lots of different colours. Less vigorous cultivars may also be left unsupported to scramble at ground level, where their flowers will be clearly visible. The various types of Clematis may be divided into three groups, each of which have different pruning requirements. Incorrect pruning may result in cutting out the stems that will produce flowers.

GROUP 1 Early flowering species such as Alpima, Macropetala and Montana types, have flower stems that are produced direct from the previous season’s ripened stems. Prune after flowering to allow new growth to be produced and ripened in time for the next season. Remove dead or damaged stems and cut back other shoots that have outgrown their allotted space. GROUP 2 Early, large-flowered cultivars. Flowers are produced on short, current season stems, so prune before the new growth starts. In early spring remove dead or damaged stems and cut back all others to the point where strong, leaf-axil buds are visible. These buds will produce the first crop of flowers.

GROUP 3 Late large-flowered cultivars, lateflowering species, small flowered cultivars and herbaceous types. Flowers are produced on the current season’s growth only, so prune before the new growth commences in early spring. Remove all of the previous season’s stems down to a pair of strong, leaf-axil bus, 15-30cm (6-12in) above the soil. Q. My lawn has yellow patches appearing in different places and birds are pecking the grass out as well. Could you help to identify the problem please? This problem has been getting worse over the last few years and is being caused by the Chafer Beetle. With less chemicals available, their population has multiplied. This beetle is widespread and a common species to the local area, especially on light soils and

Chris Brown

in lawns. It is mainly the larvae that does the damage. Chafer grubs are mainly a problem in newly cultivated land and are soon eliminated by thorough cultivation and good weed control. Infested lawns benefit from heavy rolling in late spring to kill Pupae and emerging adults, and adequate watering and feeding to encourage growth of the grasses. When severe damage is caused, reseeding in the spring may be necessary. There are now alternatives to chemicals in the form of nematodes, which can be applied to lawns by watering in by a watering can. It is important to apply these when the soil temperature is warm enough for the nematodes to work. Hope this helps! Chris x

Farmageddon Shaun the Sheep y Forest Glow Trail at Dalb

DRESS UP We’re helping parents all over York with some of the greatest ‘hacks’ we can find to help make life easier. No need to thank us – not all heroes wear capes.

Dalby Forest has come through with an all-singing, all-dancing walk themed around every kid’s favourite character: Shaun the Sheep. This 3km toddle is designed for kids aged 6-12 and costs £3.50 for the essentials pack, which comes with a UV pen-torch, glow trail activity book, wearable Shaun the Sheep ears, plus stickers, a pencil and clue sheet. The story: An alien space ship has crashed into Dalby Forest and Shaun the Sheep is on a mission to help the inhabitant – a lovable alien called

Lu-La. Use your UV pen to reveal secret hidden puzzles and solve them in the app. Download: The app, which encourages the kids to get active in order to charge Lu-La’s Communicator. Dalby Forest isn’t known for its ultrafast 4G signal so do this bit at home before you set off! Hurry - the Glow Trail finishes at the end of March. Start the trail at Dalby Forest Visitor Centre, Dalby Forest Dr, Low Dalby, Pickering YO18 7LT.

This month, we’ve found four hacks that will make clothing conundrums a thing of the past. Whether you’ve got many children; you’re finding your feet with your first; or you often have little feet pattering around you and could do with a helping hand, Hacked Off is here to take a bit of the burden. 1.

Wash baby socks in a laundry bag. Little babies have little feet. And little feet wear little socks. And little socks are an absolute pain in the neck to fish out of the washing machine and keep together. So, shove them all in a laundry bag and losing the pesky things will be a distant memory. Pull onesies and tops DOWN in an… emergency. This may be obvious, but if you weren’t already aware of it then prepare to have your life changed forever: most baby grows and vest tops have little ‘envelopes’ on the shoulders. These allow a little extra room to pull them down rather than over the head – invaluable in nappy emergencies. Bring an extra top. Most parents of young children or babies carry spare outfits for their kids – just in case. But it’s not a bad idea to take a spare top of your own in case your little one decides to throw up on you. Not just that – you never know what delightful substances could end up on your clothing. Better safe than sorry, eh? Put onesies on backwards. If your little scallywag likes to take their clothes off at every opportunity, then here’s something to ruin their day: put their onesie on backwards. They won’t be able to reach the zip or buttons and spontaneous nakedness will be no more.

Are you interested in sharing your home and your culture to help students learn about a different way of life, all while earning extra income? Do you have a spare room? If so, why not join hundreds of other families in hosting international students with York Tutors.

Exercise and Gym Injuries Our resident sport and exercise expert, Dr Dane Vishnubala, shares tips on how to deal with pain or potential injuries when exercising. So you’ve had a positive start to the new year and returned to exercise with inspired vigour and motivation. It’s likely you will have noticed some aches and pains from this change in exertion. Occasionally more significant injuries can occur when you return to exercise - especially if you’ve been out of action for a while, or if you have recently increased your intensity. Here are our top tips:

niggle or injury. After an injury, it’s important to immediately rest the injured area and avoid the activities that led to your initial pain until this area becomes symptom free. Ice and cold dressings are a good way to provide pain relief and minimise swelling. Compression and elevation also serve to help minimise the swelling of the injured area.

1. Listen to your body

If you experience any of the following signs, you should seek prompt advice from an experienced sports physiotherapist or doctor: • Sudden pop or snap in a muscle or tendon • Change in shape of a muscle • Loss of strength or function • Excessive bruising or swelling.

Don’t try to push through the onset of any new discomfort or pain. Whilst it’s normal to have some aching and stiffness if you’ve have been exercising more than usual, these should be nothing more than mild discomfort. If you experience the sudden onset of pain with a particular activity then it’s important to stop and re-evaluate. Pushing through the pain barrier in these situations is likely to make an injury worse, and lead to more time away from exercise - or potentially the need for more significant treatment.

2. Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate - RICE This is the best way to manage a new

3. Get some advice

4. Plan a staged return

As your symptoms begin to settle, it’s important to get moving again in a controlled and planned way. This should be based on your level of pain, with a gradual increase in intensity of exercise as your body allows. Your physiotherapist will help plan your return to exercise. Finally, prevention is better than cure!

The best way to treat an injury is to avoid one in the first place. This is best achieved through: - good warming up exercises - a balanced exercise programme - good techniques for your discipline - looking after or treating old injuries. Best Dressed Have you ever watched period TV shows and films and thought: ‘those costumes are amazing’? So have we. It’s hard to imagine that someone actually sits and painstakingly designs and creates such costumes – but they do. Meet Laura Waywell Bourchier, of Bourchier Costumes. Originally from Liverpool, Laura came to York to study at the Northern College of Costume – and is now a freelance period costume designer and maker based right here in our very own city. With credits including Peaky Blinders and JORVIK Viking Centre, Laura’s initial interests in musical theatre, art and history have blended perfectly into the unique business she operates today. Bourchier Costumes’ services range from designing and constructing historically-inspired garments from scratch, or taking someone else’s vision and helping to bring that to life. Laura’s process is to have an initial meeting to discuss fabrics, patterns, styles and general requirements; followed by one-to-one fittings until both parties are happy with the results. To ensure durability, Laura sews both by hand and with machines. Fancy checking out Bourchier Costumes

Events Hotlist FAIR AND SQUARE

We’ll be living it up this month!

you’re invited to an Easter Sunday Chapel Service on Sunday 12th; and a whole new event for 2020 – The Pyramids Tour – takes place on Saturday 25th April. Obviously the events don’t stop there – so make sure you visit www.castlehoward.co.uk to check out what’s lined up for the season ahead.

Well, the date you’ll all want to put in your diary is Saturday 21st March – but there are plenty more happenings at Castle Howard that you won’t want to miss out on.
