COME WHAT MAY Welcome to May! The month that says we’re firmly into spring (dare we say approaching summer..?!) and the month that gives us lots of hilarious puns. When the 4th May was cleverly re-phrased into ‘May the Fourth be with you’, we thought it was funny. But now it’s become a national event, dubbed ‘Star Wars Day’.
We offer a espoke CAD esign service And speaking of special days, we you all survived April Fools’ Day ing hope the latest without being tricked. That sadly can’t be said for our office. Writer Claire technology
firmly believed that low-cost travel firm Megabus were really introducing a ‘Vegan bus’ that offered a grass-based

carpet and promised the most ecofriendly journey ever. And Scott fell for an article that discussed the concept of ‘flock and roll’ – where playing music to sheep increases the quality of the wool they produce. Really.
So, what major events could be lined up for 2019? Well for one, Brexit might actually get sorted out. Or we could finally win the Eurovision Song Contest on the 18th. Yeah we know what you’re thinking: don’t be daft. Brexit will never get sorted out. We probably won’t win Eurovision either, but one of them is certainly more likely than the other.
May might come and go quite discreetly as one of the less ‘busy’ months of the year. But did you know that as far as history goes, May has been quite an important month? For starters, waaaaaay back in 1707, the 1st of May saw our very own Great Britain form between England and Scotland. On the 27th May in 1937, the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge

scented candle. These things all make me very common. I don’t suppose the fact that it came from L’Occitane makes it any more acceptable.
AND LIFE IN GENERAL
Just when I am wondering whether there will ever be any news other than Brexit, salvation has arrived in the form of “society interior designer” (whatever one of those is), Nicky Haslam. Writing in the Daily Torygraph, he recently asked: “How common are you?” Not very, would be my general answer. I frequent Boyes (the Harrods of the North) on a more or less daily basis. In fact, my little route of Boyes, Savers and Barnitts would, I think, make me positively posh. Especially once you’ve added in all the brown furniture bought from Wombells (sadly not inherited, which might be a bit of a downer from a ‘common’ point of view, but you can’t have everything), and a fondness for fish and chips and mushy peas. I also know the difference between napkins and serviettes, lavatories and toilets, and looking glasses and mirrors. So I’m not entirely sure that Mr Haslam can teach me much. Especially given that he appears to live in a shrine to All Things Tacky And Tasteless, to judge by the accompanying photograph. He also appears to be wearing a track suit.
A family business since 1936
10
However, I can’t resist a bit of selfabsorption, so I read on. And how very shocked I am. For it turns out that he is not interested in the lavatory vs toilet debate. No: he is deliberately setting out to prove that I - and, in fact, most of the people I know - am horribly, shockingly common. I may not have a cushion with ‘Love’ emblazoned on it, and I can’t remember when I last ate a sorbet. I don’t own a swan or a hedge fund or a palm tree or coloured gumboots, and for some inexplicable reason I have not yet been offered a knighthood. I don’t put the central heating on much, because I have an Aga which heats the house for me. Fortunately I don’t have time to be ill (“being ill” is common), so I need not worry about that one. I needn’t worry about jet lag, either, as I can’t afford to fly anywhere. These are all points in my favour. However, I do use cash machines (how else is one supposed to obtain cash, I wonder? By mugging someone?) I also wash my hands after using the loo, and have been to The Proms. I also own a
“Precise tipping” is also out. I initially thought this meant “sorting your rubbish before taking it to Hazel Court”, but this presumably just means I spend too much time at the Tip.
I might start feeling a bit depressed at this point, but it seems that all my friends are condemned too. Farrow and Ball is common, so that covers pretty much everyone I know. Mr Haslam doesn’t mention whether it’s common to have Fake Farrow from Johnstone’s in James Street, so we may in fact all be safe. However, this is cancelled out by listening to Woman’s Hour and wearing a scarf. As for “intensely private people”: well, they’re as common as muck. Unlike the rather less-than-private type of people who appear on reality television in swimsuits, obvi-ously. “Coloured bath towels” are also condemned. I suggest he borrow a teenage daughter with a penchant for white-towel-wrecking cosmetics, before he makes a final decision on this one. Fortunately it’s not just ordinary York mortals who are afflicted by Commonness, as Mr Haslam includes “tours of the house” on his list. The Howard family take note. The fact that Mr Haslam has listed these things on a tea-towel (sorry: drying-up clawth) which his newspaper article is trying to sell is, of course, not in the

slightest bit common, tacky or tasteless. More to the point, though, he has missed so many really important things out. Such as the compulsion to be an hour early when you need to catch a train, as previously detailed in this column. Is this common or not? “Being on time” is, apparently, unacceptable. I would agree with this, because only a mad person would just “be on time” to catch a train (or attend a hospital appointment, while we’re at it) - but where does that leave “being early”? He’s also very quiet on the subject of church-going. Common or not? We need to know. Given that “being overwoke” is on his list, I would like to think that female clergy and songmen fall into this category. I also wonder a bit about my Aga. If Henley Regatta is common, why not the Aga? And what about York Races? What about foraging for Yellow Stickered items in the Pavement M&S at the end of the day? He is also suspiciously quiet on the subject of books. To judge by the photograph of his sitting room, I suspect he might think them common. And if that’s the case, common is something I’m more than happy to be.

Horoscopes 20TH APR - 20TH MAY Strong travel options to important (if not really long distance) destina-tions arise during the first week of the month. Generally speaking, there’s quite a bright mood throughout the month of May with some fresh enthusiasm working with you in connection with a long (but frequently complicated) career or business ambition. We’re not talking about miraculous shortcuts here – rather a burst of determination to crack on and get things done. If, over the last few years, you’ve lost a little faith in your own abilities, then there’s good news – because this is when your faith begins to be restored! I wouldn’t want to call it a windfall, but there’s certainly a cash boost towards the month’s
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
There’s a subtle change in the family dynamic when a person who’s been somewhat distant and aloof, now seeks closer links with you – and makes an effort to be more helpful and understanding. While this may have a number of connotations, it’s particularly relevant to all parent and child relationships, especially when the child is an adult. Enjoy and respond!
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
Where affairs of the heart are concerned, trust your instincts. And if this means saying no and pouring cold water over someone else’s expectations, well you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. This is NOT a time to try rekindling old love affairs, and nor is it a good time to have faith in the promises of people who have broken their promises in the past.

end, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. But what might be surprising is the amount of money finding its way into your bank account. Don’t be tempted to blow it all in one go because it serves you better if you use it to consolidate existing commitments. In some ways this could be a very educational time for Taureans. Not so much in the academic sense, but through learning to see other people from a different perspective, and becoming much more in tune with their deeper needs. You should be able to respond positively to this, which will go a long way to improving your love life and any kind of emotional relationship.
LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG
This is going to be a very forward-looking month, during which a number of plans and decisions will be made that will affect both your mid and long-term future. Career-minded females will have to make choices between emotional and professional priorities, while Leo males are notably successful in overcoming career obstacles and making unexpected progress.
VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
A very busy month on the work scene, but you’ll be in a strangely passive “wait and see” mood in connection with personal matters and affairs of the heart. Some unexpected obstacle stands in your way around the 10th but rather than confronting it head on, you’ll sidle round the side and thus will avoid what might seem like an inevitable fight. Good move!

While Libran men seem content to be led, Libran ladies seem totally determined to do the leading – which is especially true for career-minded women under 40. Younger Libran girls (17-25) get some fabulous opportunities at various times during the month, (the 18th through ‘til the 24th in particular), but these opportunities do not come without some risk.
SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV
As you’re reading this, you’re either laying in the bed you made for yourself or you’re cock-a-hoop with satisfaction at the way things have turned out. I doubt if there’s anything much in between! Wherever you are you need to think long and hard about what you want out of your own future, and make a point of not repeating old mistakes. 22ND NOV
SAGITTARIUS- 21ST DEC
Although your confidence might be quite high at this time you must avoid becoming complacent. The wheel of fortune turns in mysterious ways and there are always a few surprises in life. With this thought in mind, stay flexible in your plans and in your forward-thinking. Enjoy what you’ve got, but remember: it’s not written in tablets of stone that you will want the same thing for ever. 22ND DEC
CAPRICORN - 19TH JAN
Travel plans for early in the month provide you with a much-needed break, and even if you’re not going as far as Timbuktu, a change is as good as a rest. Anything that
breaks existing domestic routines has got to be good. Relationships are quite solid, but you can make them even better by being more open with your innermost thoughts and hopes for the future. 20TH JAN
AQUARIUS - 18TH FEB
Doors of opportunity, which have been shut in your face for a long time, now start creaking open, and you’ll be gifted with a different vision of your own future. It’s time to embrace all that is new, whether it’s something tangible like a house or a car, or something more metaphysical like a state of mind. Priorities that have been important for many years now start shifting.

How mad is too mad?
COLUMNIST
Krystal’s gems
Everyone gets mad about bins. There are few things I’ve been certain of in life, but one of those Very Few Things is that at some point in your life, my life, everyone’s lives, we have all been pissed off about our bins. Few topics make the blood boil like refuse collection. Green bins, recycling boxes, black bins, and those bloody stickers you get when you’ve accidentally put something naughty in the wrong container. Mildly scratching your head on your front drive, wondering what you’ve messed up this time. But how mad is Too Mad? I’m sure many people have written angry emails or submitted passive aggressive Freedom of Information Requests like: HOW MANY TIMES DID YOU REFUSE A BIN IN THE YO30 POSTCODE THIS YEAR? I hadn’t contemplated the topic of How Mad is Too Mad, until I saw Too Mad in the flesh. I have now seen a man take a running jump over the line of How Mad Is Too Mad to get about your bins. I estimate he took about two years off his own life from the pure anger and frustration he displayed in the six-minute fracas I was party to. For the purpose of anonymity I have named him Lord of the Landfill.
Here are some of the things I saw the Lord of the Landfill do that are absolutely not acceptable when you get a bad case of Bin Rage: stand in front of the bin wagon to prevent it from continuing its round, throw your bin bags onto the bin wagon yourself, jab a dustman in the chest and film yourself being aggressive under the guise of holding said bin men to account. I’ll add a little bit of context for you. There are approximately eight bin bags on Lord of the Landfill’s manicured front lawn. He is waiting outside, face bright red, when I follow the truck up the road. His big, albeit dopey, dog is roaming the perimeter and a slightly
rubbish either. In fact I know I’m right because I checked the website, something I highly recommend Lord of the Landfill does in due course. Unless he’s paying extra for some sort of special commercial service it is a big house.
aloof-looking wife is stood a couple of feet behind him. This man is waiting for the bin men and he is really, really mad. Too Mad.
“This man is waiting for the bin men and he is really, really mad. Too Mad.”
MEMORIALS
Here’s a passing thought, if you have managed to create eight or nine large bin bags of waste on top of your own bin, in two weeks, you are the problem. Not the bin men. And I think I’m right in saying that they aren’t required to collect that density of
It’s common knowledge that the world is facing a plastic pollution disaster. When you’re independently contributing to that on a large scale, it seems a small penalty to have to drive to the skip yourself and face what you’ve done. You are a scourge on society and definitely deserve to have to dispose of your own excessive trash. Terrorising bin men on a Wednesday morning is not the answer to this. This is the point where I go: this man is just Too Mad. I am thinking about just how mad he truly is when his big b*st**d dog jumps up at my window on its back legs and stays there while his wife eyeballs me flightily. Lord of the Landfill doesn’t notice, he’s engaged full

I hope you don’t get in any trouble because Lord of the Landfill couldn’t hold his temper or control his obscene contribution to our already polluted world.
The scene comes to a close when the bin men eventually give in to angry man, probably in the interests of self preservation and he tosses his bin bags onto the wagon angrily and gestures for his dog. I suddenly have a rush of regret over not getting my phone out to film the whole thing, and resolve to be nicer to my local dustmen. True men of the people.

JOIN THE CLUB MAKING WAVES It’s an unfortunate fact of life that many of us struggle through each day with invisible illnesses and disabilities – whether mental or physical. And it’s extremely important for us as a society to be aware, and to raise awareness, of these conditions. One of these conditions is Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), an inflammatory arthritis that can cause back pain, stiffness, and tiredness; amongst other symptoms. And in a bid to raise money for new equipment to fund hydrotherapy sessions for sufferers, the York branch of the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS) are holding a fundraiser on Friday 10th May at 7pm, at the York Hospital Sports & Social Club on White Cross Road. The event will include an evening of live music featuring Ukulele Sunshine Revival, The Waifs and Strays, and The Bluebirds with Union Central; as well as a prize raffle. Tickets cost £5 in advance or £6 on the door and can be bought from the Pyramid Gallery in Stonegate, by calling Rory on 07986 812732 or via email to york@nass.co.uk.
n To find out more about Ankylosing Spondylitis, or NASS, visit www.nass.co.uk.

TALK ON Being in hospital can be difficult for many reasons – and it can be just as challenging for friends and family of those undergoing treatment in many ways. That’s why Talking Point was introduced – a support service led by a team of adult social care experts for patients and friends and family of patients at York Hospital. Talking Point, which has had fantastic feedback from people who’ve used it so far, will be offering a drop-in service at York Hospital between 2-3.45pm on the 28th May, 25th June and 23rd July, to help patients prepare for life at home after leaving hospital. The Talking Point service originally opened in Acomb last year, and dropins are now regularly available in Haxby and York Explore on Museum Street. As the programme develops, more Talking Points will continue to open. Melanie Liley, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, says: “I am delighted to see Talking Point introduced at York Hospital as this will support the discharge process. Providing timely, appropriate advice and support about a variety of adult social care issues will offer our staff, visitors and patients the support they need to stay healthy and age well.”

A COMPLETE SHAMBLES
Along with our lovely Minster and the historic York Walls, the Shambles is probably one of the most famous spots in the City of York. But it’s not just about the cobbled pavements and Harry Potter-themed shops – allow us to take you on a little tour.
1
Okay, we’re actually not starting today’s Treasure Hunt on the Shambles – we’re starting in Parliament Street. Grab yourself a coffee from Pret A Manger, turn right as you exit, and turn right again onto Jubbergate.
2
Treasure Hunt
Keep walking until you come to a clearing. In front of you is an old, white cottage-style restaurant. • What’s the name of the restaurant?
• An easy one to start off with: What’s the name of the market? • What can you buy at the very front of the market?
3
Turn right in front of the restaurant and you’ll find yourself well and truly in the depths of the market! • What art-deco contraption can you spot on the wall directly ahead of you? • Keep looking at that wall – what’s unusual about the windows?
Once you’ve explored the market, follow your nose down to the 4 outdoor food court. As you reach the end, you’ll find yourself on the Shambles. Turn right and walk down to the bottom. • What’s the name of the Hall on your left? • What time does the Ghost Hunt start?
18
5
Okay, turn left and face the Shambles. Grab your camera it’s time to be a real tourist!
• You’ll spot lots of novelty shops selling Harry Potter merchandise. But what’s the link between Harry Potter and the Shambles? (Hint: You might need to pop into one of the shops and ask someone!) • After the York Lucky Cats shop, you’ll see a plaque on the left wall for the Shrine of Saint Margaret Clitherow. What day and time is Mass?
Keep walking up until you spot a left turn. • What’s the name of this adjacent street?
7
YORK LIFE
6
Continue down the Shambles until you reach the top. There’s a plaque on the wall in front of you. • What word does the Shambles take its name from, and what does it mean? • When was the Shambles rebuilt? • On the upper left of that same wall you’ll see a sign for King’s Court. What was it formerly known as?
Well done – that’s the Shambles in a nutshell! There are, of course, so many treasures to be found in this small and well-known street, so make sure you have a really good look around. Turn left on King’s Court to end up back in the market and Parliament Street – or turn right and pop into York’s Chocolate Story for a delicious tour. Answers: 1. Shambles Market; Flowers. 2. Gert and Henry’s. 3. A clock; The windows are covered with images of historic York. 4. St Crux Parish Hall; 7.30pm. 5. Diagon Alley from Harry Potter is said to have been inspired by the Shambles; 10am on Saturdays. 6. Little Shambles. 7. ‘Shamel’, meaning ‘the stalls or benches on which the meat was displayed’; 1400; Coney Garth.

THIS MONTH: CONSTANTINE THE GREAT (PART 1: THE EARLY YEARS)
Contrary to popular opinion, the reclining figure that sits outside of York Minster’s South Transept is NOT a statue of The Jolly Green Giant. It is in fact that of a very casual representation of former Roman Emperor and (kinda) local lad, Constantine the Great. But what was he doing here in York, and what made him so “Great”? We delve in, looking at how he got started, and covering the rest of his life next month. Flavius Valerius Constantinus was born in Dacia Ripensis (now Serbia) in 272 CE. His father, who, confusingly, had the exact same name, was a prominent officer in the Roman Army. It’s unknown if he and Constantine’s mother, Helena (later ‘Saint Helena’ – St. Helens Square, anyone?), were actually married, or if she was simply his concubine. But either way, the younger Constantine spent very little time with his father growing up.
A TALE OF TWO EMPERORS You see, at this point in Roman history,
things were a little weird. The Empire was essentially split in two, with one Emperor (or ‘Augustus’) ruling in the West, and another ruling in the East. Each of these emperors had a ‘Caesar’, or deputy emperor, and the process of ascension was a very political issue with the power being won by promotion rather than being passed from father to son. In 293 CE Constantius, Constantine’s father, rose to the rank of Caesar of the Western Empire, and so, as was the practice, his son was sent East to study and train in the court of the Eastern Emperor, Diocletian. He was something of a happy hostage; there to ensure that his father behaved himself and didn’t raise an army against the East. While there, Constantine was schooled in philosophy and became a military tribune, leading campaigns against barbarians and Persians for Diocletian. The young lad earned himself quite a reputation as an impressive soldier and leader and was seen by many as an

miles away, heading for the English Channel.
However, Emperor Diocletian soon stood down, to be replaced as Augustus by Galerius… who really didn’t like how popular Constantine had become. Instead of promoting him to Caesar, as was expected, Constantine was overlooked. Galerius then started sending Constantine on dangerous missions, resulting in several near-death incidents. Realising Galerius was out to get him, Constantine decided to make a break for it.
After crossing into Britannia, Constantine headed north to a certain legendary fortress known as Eboracum. There he met his father, now Western Augustus, who was busily campaigning against the Picts to the north in Scotland. So he joined him in a bit of good old native murdering. Good, wholesome, father and son fun.
Waiting until the Emperor was good and drunk, he asked Galerius to go and assist his father in Britannia. Galerius agreed, sort of, (and, seizing the opportunityConstantine) high-tailed out of there. He rode as fast has he could, knowing he had only until Galerius sobered up and realised his mistake. By the time he did, our hero was already hundreds of

However, after only a year together, his father, Constantius, died here in York in 306 CE. As he was so popular, and because it seemed the logical choice given his experience, Constantine was proclaimed the Emperor in a ceremony conducted by a respected Vandal King in

Constantius’ service, Chrocus. Constantine then sent a letter to his now equal, Galerius, informing of him of his father’s death and his own ascension to Augustus. As that ascension was technically illegal, as no other Augustus or Caesar was consulted, Constantine claimed that his men had “forced it upon him”. Yeah, right. Also, to really rub Galerius’ nose in it, Constantine sent him a portrait of himself dressed in regal robes. This properly miffed Galerius, who attempted to burn the portrait, but he was calmed by his advisors. They knew that if Galerius outright objected to Constantine’s position, it would certainly mean a civil war, with Constantine possessing the largest army. And so the two Emperors exchanged false pleasantries and stared at each other from across the entire Roman Empire.

Dear
Got a problem? OF COURSE YOU HAVE. Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out.
UNINVITED Daphne, My friends from university and I were going to do a girls city break this summer. It was supposed to be me, three of my close friends, and another girl who I’m not too close with but my friends are. We always talked about it in terms of a “girls weekend away.” I was really excited for the holiday but I’ve heard that the girl I’m not close with is bringing her new boyfriend. I asked if the boy was someone I knew, and it turned out that he also went to our uni and I didn’t get on with him very well when I knew him. I feel like it’s gunna change the dynamic of the group completely and won’t be a girls trip anymore. She didn’t consult the group first and now it’s going to be our fault if we say he can’t come and he’s disappointed. The more I think about it, the less
interested I am in going on this trip. I don’t think we’ll have a good time with her boyfriend there and I don’t really want to spend my holiday budget on it either. We’re supposed to be buying flight tickets soon so I need to figure out what to do quickly. The girl who you’re not as close with definitely broke an unspoken rule by assuming that she could bring her new boyfriend without consulting the girls first. New love is exciting and intense but also highly irritating and suffocating for those of us around it. Have you spoken to any of the other girls in the group to see how they feel about it? You’re a free agent and it doesn’t sound like you’re tied into this holiday financially yet: it’s easy for you to drop out and make your excuses. What you do need to consider is that if all your friends still went regardless, would you feel like you were missing out? Sometimes in larger friendship groups
we have to spend time with people that we aren’t particularly keen on, it happens and it’s usually OK. You could wind up enjoying their company more than you thought you would. You’re allowed to be annoyed, you’re right that it has completely changed the dynamic of the group, but the winning play for you could actually be to go anyway. Accept the distant friend is a misterbefore-sister kinda gal and let her get on with it. She’ll soon feel awkward when all the girls are gossiping and putting makeup on while she has to entertain her boyfriend (who she shouldn’t have invited in the first place). Daph x
LONG DISTANCE LIMBO Dear Daphne, My girlfriend and I have been together for a half a year, I love her, but we’ve recently hit a rough patch and have spent a lot of time arguing. To make matters worse, she’s just accepted a temp job about 2 hours away from where we currently live. I know that she doesn’t like her current job so I understand why she’s taken it. She
thinks it will be good for her and wants to stay with some friends who live there until she finds a place to rent. But I’m worried that this is going to kill our relationship. We won’t see each other much and while she sofa surfs at her friend’s place, we’re going to get no time alone. Can I say how I feel? Is there a way I can make it work? You should always be able to say how you feel. Just make sure that saying how you feel and creating an ultimatum aren’t the same thing. If your girlfriend is as invested in the relationship as you are, there will be compromises that can be made. Perhaps you could take it in turns every other weekend visiting each other. It sounds like you care a lot, and I reckon you care enough to try and make it work, even if it’s just to find out if it could. I can’t tell you that there’s a formula to making long distance relationships successful, other than dedication and mutual feelings from both parties. Sometimes these things do, and sometimes they don’t - I think you’re just going to have to find out.

Local Baring a footballing miracle, York City’s season should be over by the time you are reading this – given May fixtures are solely reserved for those teams who have made it to the National League North play-offs. At the time of writing City trail by eight points having played a game more, so there appears to be more chance of Jose Mourinho cracking a smile than promotion this year. Oh well, surely the best way to Christen the new stadium move next season will be to achieve promotion in it to show it was worth the wait. Of course, the season has been another major disappointment, but manager Steve Watson has made a positive impression on most, if not all, followers of the Minstermen since his appointment. But the time to judge him will be this time next year, when hopefully our season will extend into the month of May and the club will compete with the likes of Bradford Park Avenue, Spennymoor Town and Chorley – a sentence I never thought I would ever write! Watson has already started thinking about next season by looking at potential new players. One of which is Jasper Moon who has joined
Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence. from Barnsley; not on loan but on ‘work experience’. I’m sure he’ll have a better experience than I did in 1998 at a York stationery shop, where the highlight of my day was a large stock pile of pencil sharpeners arriving. After watching football for nearly 30 years I thought I’d seen or heard everything about the game. Until I saw the headline: “Deer droppings stopped play”. Which was the case at Scottish Highland league side Fort William, who had to suspend kick-off to deal with a water-drenched and deer-faecescovered surface. Then, just as the match was about ready to start, the Referee found the whole episode too much and threw up all over the centre circle. After a long delay the match resumed and Fort William won 6-2. So with the football coming to a close, the cricket season begins, which feels like it’s getting earlier and earlier. I’m sure it used to be a summer sport, but as Yorkshire’s taking on Nottinghamshire in the opening week of April, I’m sure Joe Root could see his breath when leaving the pavilion and coming out to bat. That game against Notts was taking place when I was
writing this column, and aside from new overseas signing Duane Olivier taking five wickets in his first innings as a Yorkie, the team were staring down the barrel of defeat. Hopefully by the time of the 27th-30th May home County Championship fixture at Headingley vs Hampshire, the team will have shown the opening game to be a one-off.

ELECTRIC AVENUE
We all know how quickly technology develops, to the point where we’re having to learn how to use new gadgets all the time. And it seems fair now to finally admit that the increasing levels of tech have spread to the humble motorcar. And while it feels like only yesterday that we were all getting excited over electric cars actually being on the roads, they’re pretty much old news now. But that doesn’t mean the BRAKES are on – electric cars are going from strength to strength. You could even say they’ve GONE UP A GEAR. Or are we just CLUTCH-ing at straws with the car puns?
YES-WAY FOR NORWAY Over in Norway, electric cars have certainly made their mark – with recent reports from the Norwegian Road Federation saying that 58% of new car registrations in March were electric. And, with 5,315 registrations, Tesla’s Model 3 took up 29% of these new cars. So there we go – electric cars are actually becoming the more popular choice!
IN CHARGE Similarly to how the latest phones all have to have bigger and better batteries, electric cars are constantly having their components improved as
well. And the latest development is a new type of battery that’s expected to give the cars that house it a 600-mile journey before needing to be recharged. It’s also expected to cost less, and have a decreased fire risk.
MONEY SAVER Okay so electric cars, currently, are much pricier than their petrol or diesel counterparts. But that could all be about to change. A report by the International Council on Clean Transportation has come back saying electric vehicle prices are expected to drop to that of a petrol or diesel equivalent by 2030.

It’s an exciting time for local law firm Ware & Kay Solicitors. They’re focussed on their expanding future and have already begun to implement their ambitious strategy – by appointing leading litigation officer, Johanne Spittle, as Head of Department in their Litigation Department; and to their Board of Directors. Johanne’s 33 years’ experience in litigation and dispute resolution will bring a wealth of knowledge and contacts to Ware & Kay, which have offices in York, Wetherby, and Malton. Originally from the West Midlands, Johanne studied at the University of Sheffield and Guildford College of Law where she qualified as a Solicitor in 1986. “I am delighted to be joining Ware & Kay at a very exciting time for the firm,” says Johanne. “Ware & Kay has a well-
deserved reputation as one of the leading law firms in Yorkshire and has seen a sustained growth over the last few years. There is a tremendous opportunity to grow further and continue to build on the services provided and I am really looking forward to being on the Board of Directors and part of the great team that will take Ware & Kay to the next level.” Welcome aboard, Johanne!

CAN COOK WILL COOK Calling all wannabe chefs! Are you part of a cookery club? Maybe you’re a keen home cook or just want to share ideas, tips and recipes with other amateur kitchen superheroes? We want to throw open the doors to our Monks Cross cookery area every Saturday morning so that enthusiastic individuals can use the latest cooking technology to make, learn about and love great food. There are so many exciting food-related topics we can talk about, but some things we’ve already been asked for are: how to make the perfect Yorkshire pudding; how to put the ‘crack’ into crackling; and how to cook the perfect steak. As we

progress there’ll be dedicated sessions for allergy and food intolerances. My own daughter has an intolerance to some very common cooking ingredients and it can be quite daunting trying to put together appropriate food menus. I’m hopeful we can share ideas about this and many other food topics for the benefit of all. We have the latest steam ovens, multifunctional combi ovens, induction touch-control hobs and warming drawers for you to cook on, and we’re ideally looking for a club to build this project with us and take it forward for the benefit of as many York residents as we can fit in!

expert advice on the right products to suit you and your business, just call to book your appointment. Originally a Cumbria-based company, Yorkshire was the next natural move for Out of Eden: “The county as a whole has its ties with Out of Eden in more ways than one, with Yorkshire being our founder, Ian Hartley’s, home county. It also serves as a great parallel to our Cumbria store, based within the small market town of Kirkby Stephen and planted firmly at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Both destinations boast uncontested views, endless countryside, quaint towns rich in history and a quintessentially British experience for tourists, we’re delighted to be expanding Out of Eden and into the city of York” said Phill Heartwell, Out of Eden’s digital marketing manager.

YOUR HOME & GARDEN Gardening is a very rewarding pastime, and can be great for nurturing creativity by producing colourful floral displays, relaxing outdoor spaces and the opportunity to grow and tend to crops. Gardening connects us to nature through our surroundings, plants and the soil – and health experts now agree that this is all beneficial to our overall health and wellbeing.
38
There are many projects that you could start this month in the garden – from creating a beautiful patio display, planting up a flower bed that you can then cut and use indoors for floral arrangements, and growing your own fruit and vegetable crops to enjoy in the months ahead. We’ve all heard the mantra of getting ‘five a day’ in our
diet, but experts at Imperial College London say that the majority of people still aren’t eating enough fruit and veg, and that we should be eating more. So what better way to increase your intake and reap the health benefits than by growing your own crops and knowing that you’re picking the healthiest, freshest, nutrient-rich produce possible? Sowing your own crops is also a rewarding task as well as providing exercise – not to mention a great way to save money! Fruit and vegetables provide a variety of vitamins, minerals and fibre, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease, strokes and cancer. They can also aid in boosting our immune system and reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels – plus a number of other health benefits. Whether you have an allotment or large garden, or you have more limited space, there are many types of fruit and veg that you can grow at home – and you don’t necessarily need a lot of space to do so. You’d be surprised by what you can produce on a small balcony
or patio! Gooseberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants and blueberries can all be grown in pots – and strawberries are great planted up in hanging baskets. If you do have limited space you could try growing beetroot, carrots, radishes, lettuce, salad leaves, spinach, tomatoes or sweet peppers. By staggering the sowing and planting of small batches to two weeks apart, you’ll ensure a regular supply without a large glut of produce all at once. So why not try this rewarding and satisfying experience, which is much easier than you think, and have a go at growing your own!

Eco trip EXPERT
Tony Chalcraft Pears are probably my favourite tree fruit. A well-ripened tasty pear with buttery melting flesh is one of the finest treats the garden has to offer, and one that cannot be readily bought from a shop. It will be late August before the very first pears are ready but it’s now that the quality and quantity of the crop is set.
baby pears develop the larvae hatch and begin feeding inside the fruit. The larvae continue to munch away at the fruitlets so they first soften and then begin to blacken and shrivel. Eventually, usually by early June, they drop from the tree.
To a large extent, how well pears will do is down to spring weather. Frost at, or after, blossom time is always a threat. Pears flower early, often at the beginning of April when sharp frosts are still likely. There’s not much that can be done about this unless the trees are small or trained on wires and can be easily covered with fleece or other protective material.
The severity of pear midge attack varies from year to year. In a bad season it’s not uncommon for the majority of the crop to be lost. Tackling it, particularly on large trees, isn’t practical. Spaying, not something I would do, is difficult and, in any case, probably of limited effectiveness as well as potentially lethal to pollinating insects. If, like me, you’ve mostly small trees grown as cordons or espaliers some control can be achieved by hand removal of affected fruitlets.
While frost is a menace, it isn’t usually the biggest peril for my pears. Far more serious for me, and I suspect many other gardeners who may not be aware of the damage it causes, is an insect pest called pear midge. This midge (a tiny fly) lays its eggs on pear blossom shortly before it opens. As
MUNCHING MIDGES About every two weeks from late April to early June I go pear ‘midging’. That is, looking for baby pears that have been attacked. These are relatively easy to spot once you ‘get your eye in’. At first the main sign of midge activity is swollen, bulbous fruitlets. If these are

We’re giving the green light to York gardening company, Grow With The Flow, thanks to its eco-friendly methods of keeping people’s gardens in check. Jake McKelvie, who runs Grow With The Flow, keeps his gardening business as environmentally friendly as possible by travelling to and from jobs on his bike and trailer. So far, customers have nothing but good words to say about it: “I’m so pleased I was introduced to Jake. He has been an enormous help at the allotment and I’ve had a lot of complimentary comments from others about the work he’s done. He’s hard working, willing, has good ideas and will research about trees and plants for me.” - Linda G. If you’d like a garden with a smaller carbon footprint, call Jake on 07999 330541.
soft to a gentle squeeze midge is likely to be present. This can be confirmed by prising open the fruit with a finger nail. Infested fruitlets will be hollowed and browned with small white maggots visible. As the midge munches away so the damage becomes more obvious. The tell-tale sign, especially later in May, is partly or completely blacked fruitlets that fall from the tree on the slightest touch. Any infected fruitlets I spot, whether still on the tree or fallen to the ground, are removed. This prevents the larvae from entering the soil to pupate and, hopefully, disrupt the midge’s lifecycle and reduces the extent of damage in future years. Checking for ‘midged’ pears every few weeks during May does seem to have gradually lessened the severity of attack on most of my trees. If you’ve pears that seem to set baby fruit but then fail to produce much of a crop midge may well be the culprit. It may be worth you going ‘midging’ too.

CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
Q.
Could you recommend some plants for summer hanging baskets and patio planters, please? Also, do you have any tips for looking after them?
These days, the choice of plants is fantastic, as most plants I am about to mention come in a wide variety of colours and shades. When people ask for hot colours in a basket, we use reds, orange, and yellow in our planting. For softer tones, we prefer pinks, blues, and white, all in light shades. Let’s start at the bottom of the hanging basket: place a circle of moss, about the size of a saucer, at the bottom of the basket, then add some compost so you have a level surface. The plants for this layer can include trailing verbena, calibrachoa ‘Million Bells’, bidens, lobelia, helichrysum silver, scaevola, and surfina. By placing moss up the sides of the basket, about three more inches, then adding compost to that level, you can next place diasica, sanvitalia, nemesia ‘nuvo’, bedding bergonias, verbena, and phlox. Then move up another layer with more moss and compost, again by about three inches. The top-side layer of your basket could include short trailing plants, brachyscome, centradenia, Felicia, helichrysum gold, marigold ‘French’ bergonia, and impatiens. Then add moss to the very top edge of the basket and fill with compost to the top. This is my favourite layer as it is the same for all
out baskets, as well as for our planters. Start with a fuchsia in the centre, then place three geraniums in a triangle around the fuchsia. The next triangle working outwards could include salvia, African marigolds, dianthus and cineraria. Around the edge of the basket or planter you could use trailing geraniums, trailing fuschia, bacopa, lysimachia, trailing bergonias, trailing verbena, and million bells. If you have any space left, use bedding bergonias as fillers. Use good quality compost and add a slowrelease fertilizer. Water every day in hot weather, and then every other day when it’s cooler. The basket or planter should flower until the first frost of winter.
Q.
I have an apple tree that’s stunted in growth – and on some of the branches there seems to be a woolly substance. What is this, and what does it mean?
This insect is called woolly aphid, and forms small colonies of tiny brown aphids that are covered by conspicuous tufts of white, woolly wax that infest stems; branches; and sometimes the roots of apple trees, ornamental crab apples, cotoneasters and pyracanthas. Colonies are most conspicuous in late spring and early summer but are present throughout the year. Infested plants develop irregular swellings on twigs and branches, and these may later crack open and provide a place for infection by pathogens that cause

From March onwards they feed on twigs and branches – especially in leaf axils, on spurs and in wounds. Successive generations of wingless aphids develop during the summer and extend infestations by crawling over host plants. Some winged aphids develop and fly off to other host plants, but this species does not spread as widely or rapidly as other aphids – and colonies tend to persist on the same trees or shrubs year after year. Breeding stops in the autumn and immature aphids seek sheltered overwintering sites. Systemic insecticides are the most effective, however contact insecticides will give good results if applied thoroughly. If feasible, the most severely-marked branches of apple, cotoneasters, pyracanthas and other ornamentals should be pruned out and destroyed before the plants are sprayed.

FROWNY FACE
Howard Mosley is a father of four, keen cyclist and professional marketer. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.
For the past few months I have been sad. Clinically sad would be one way of putting it. Totally depressed is another. My life has been somewhat chaotic recently, from the breakdown of my marriage, to weird job stuff, and finding out that my deceased father might still be alive were it not for the incompetence of a small group of nurses. Needless to say, I’ve been a bit fed up. My doctor suggested I try antidepressants, which worked for a short while until I decided to ditch them, cold turkey, at Christmas. Then I went a bit mental (a word I don’t use lightly) so was quickly prescribed other meds, accompanied by great concern from the mental health crisis team. This month’s article is a bit different so far, innit? TRICKY Obviously, this isn’t an easy article to write (nor read, perhaps. ‘When’s he getting to the bit about his kids calling him a loser, or something?!?’). There is a lot of stigma attached to mental health, especially for guys as macho and as blokey as me. But, after setting my ‘pint of lager’ aside, and pulling my attention from ‘the match’ for just a few minutes, I feel that it’s an important subject to tackle. Suffering from depression is a bit like
getting repeatedly kicked in the nuts, but nuts that are your thoughts and feelings. And instead of a human foot doing the kicking, it’s life itself. Hopeless doesn’t truly describe the sensation. I felt as if I was slowly being pushed along a long and bleak bridge toward an empty void at the other side. Like crossing the Humber Bridge into Hull. DEPRESSION JOKE! I honestly never thought I would suffer from depression, what with the jokes coming thick and fast, and my general boyish attitude toward life. But then, after doing lots of reading, I realised I had in fact been depressed for at least a decade. If I’ve met you in the last ten years, it’s definitely your fault. WHAT LARKS! 2 FOR 1 After long and colourful chats with my doctor about the depression, it was also confirmed that I’m autistic. This came as no great surprise to most people close to me, and it felt good at least to get two things sorted in one go. Like getting a polish after your dentist fits a crown, or when your mechanic cleans your wiper blades after informing you that your car has failed its MOT. However, unlike my dentist and mechanic, my doctor told me that he couldn’t offer any support with the autism until my “mental health
stabilises”. So here I am. Stabilising. BACKSTORY For me, it feels like the depression began setting in when I started to lose my battle with those traits and tendencies highlighted by my doctor as autistic. Essentially, I had been increasingly giving it to my natural propensity toward the insular and introverted. I abandoned friendships, cut extended family out of my life, and leaned toward a career that involved mostly staying at home in my pants. Human interaction quickly became a painful chore and I avoided anything – even potentially life-changing opportunities – to limit it. That might have been fine. After all, another famous Howard – Howard Hughes – really thrived as a recluse. But I also over-analyse. Everything goes through the ‘Sherlock filter’, from what people say, to how their brows crease when they look at me. I was attempting to glean meaning from everything those few people around me did, in a hope to somehow work out what it was they were really thinking. Yep, paranoid AF. ONWARDS This all came to a head at

Christmastime with the Dangerous Ditching of the Antidepressants (could be a Lemony Snicket book, that). Going mental certainly helped me to realise that changes needed to be made, if only to ensure I never again hallucinated. Yep, did that, too. So here I am now, months after the worst of it, feeling pretty positive. The mental health issue is indeed stabilising, and I’m coping better now that I understand the autism and how it works. No, I’m not good at maths. Nor will I accept your invitation to Vegas to make a killing at blackjack. I will, however, meet you for a coffee. Y’know, for chats and stuff. Like neurotypicals do. Socialising has helped and learning to accept that it’s perfectly okay to spend time in someone’s company without it having to be work or sex related. It’s a shame it’s taken a depressive breakdown to realise that. So yeah, it’s all cool and I’m feeling much better, thanks for asking. And I'm definitely not a loser, despite what my bloody kids tell me. How are you?

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED There’s no other word our furry friends like to hear more (except maybe T-RE-A-T); so they’ll be pleased to know that the 7th Keep Your Pet Charity Dog Walk hits the Knavesmire on Sunday 5th May. The York charity Keep Your Pet help older and vulnerable owners to continue caring for their pets. Their fundraising dog walks have become a regular date for pups and their owners – with last year’s event attracting more than 100 dogs and 200 owners. Opening the event will be BBC Radio York’s Jonathan Cowap, and
participants will also enjoy live music; hot drinks and food; homemade cakes; stalls selling books, crafts and toys; competitions; spot prizes; and a dog tombola. Taking part in the dog walk is £5 per dog or family, and registration will be open from 10.15am until it begins at 11am. n To find out more, visit www. keepyourpet.co.uk or email keepyourpet@ageukyork.org.uk
It’s the York Cares Big Community Challenge 2019 – and you could help! The York-based charity really are up for a challenge, as they’re planning on completely transforming The Hut in Clarence Gardens near York Hospital into a beautiful community garden – in just three days. Of course, they’re not doing this on their own – they’ve got the help of over 200 volunteers from various local businesses, schools and throughout the local community. And you could offer your support in other ways – by donating necessary materials that they need to make it happen. This could be anything from metal paint to top soil; paintbrushes to paint trays; and wire brushes to sensory plants.
The challenge will take place from the 4th6th June and will focus on promoting health, wellbeing and social inclusion. Megan Hale, Volunteering Project Officer, York Cares says: “The work that employee volunteers will complete over the three-day challenge will make a huge difference. Not only will it make the space more attractive to the wider community, but it will give them a practical outdoor space that can be used for sessions all year round; contributing to the great work The Hut does.”
Home Is Where The Heart Is Loneliness and isolation are real problems for homeowners of an older age that want to live independently. They may realistically need to pay for support, which isn’t cheap, or consider living in a care facility – which isn’t always suitable for those that wish to continue in their homes. That’s where Homeshare York comes in. It’s a win-win service that matches older homeowners with younger people – such as young professionals or mature students – who provide the homeowner with 10 hours of support per week. This arrangement helps both
parties through the means of cheaper living costs for the sharer and support with cleaning, shopping, and cooking for the owner. Not only that, but similar services across the UK and internationally have resulted in intergenerational friendships, an increased sense of wellbeing, and shared learning. Councillor Carol Runciman, Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care, says: “Research from the Centre for Ageing Better confirms that home is where most people want to be, with 80% of homeowners aged 65 and
over wishing to stay where they are. The Homeshare service offers an innovative way of doing this – bringing old and young together in a way which benefits both. I think it is an excellent idea and urge people to consider it.” Councillor Jenny Brooks, Executive Member for Housing and Safer Neighbourhoods, urges homeowners that feel this could be right for them to get involved. She says: “Having heard about the fantastic stories from existing Homeshare matches across the country, we’re really excited to have a

When young Maggie was found underweight and with her needs not being met, she was brought in to the Centre. She’s back to full health now, and ready to find her new home. Wondering why this trendy dude’s name has such an unusual spelling? Because he’s polydactyl – meaning he has more toes than he should! HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU
Glow and b e h o l d This month our resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, talks about acid peels. SPOILER ALERT: They’re not as scary as you once thought.
The ultimate fresh start for your face: acid peels lift dirt and dead skin away. A course of treatments can help to clear acne, acne scars, blemishes, pigmentation and sun damage. They also work well on oily skin, stretchmarks and signs of ageing. Here at Skin Doctor we use the Blue Peel RADIANCE from Obagi. Q. What is Blue Peel RADIANCE? Blue Peel RADIANCE contains a unique blend of Salicylic, Glycolic and Lactic acid to provide a gentle but effective peel. Salicylic acid based peels are used to improve patient outcomes for a range of skin conditions, including acne, photo damage and melasma. Blue peel RADIANCE effectively exfoliates the uppermost damaged skin layers, leaving your skin fresh, renewed and radiant. The Radiance Peel is 2.7ph and
EXPERT
Dr Saleena Zimri
20% Salicylic acid with a blend of lactic and glycolic. Q. What results can I expect? Obagi Blue Peel RADIANCE can improve your skin’s look, texture, and feel in a matter of minutes. It’s a superficial exfoliation, with little to no downtime. Clients will notice smoother, brighter looking skin after just one treatment; although a series of four to six peels provides best overall results. Q. What does the procedure involve? The procedure isn’t invasive and won’t require any physical downtime. Skin will be cleansed and up to three coats of the peel will be applied. The peel solution will only remain on the face for a maximum of nine minutes. You will experience some mild stinging and a burning sensation, which
quickly subsides. If you require, a test application of the peel solution can be applied on a small area of the skin before proceeding to a large area. Q. How do I prepare my skin prior to the peel? Patients should avoid use of the following products and procedures on the area to be treated for 5-7 days post, and prior to the peel: • Laser Hair Removal and laser treatments • Waxing or depilatory creams • Electrolysis • Microdermabrasion • Salicylic acid and acid based skincare products • Benzoyl peroxide • Retinols
While the Blue Peel RADIANCE is perfectly safe, there are some circumstances in which you might not be able to have the treatment. These include: Active cold sores, wounded skin, and being pregnant or breastfeeding. Please visit www. skindoctorclinics.co.uk for a full list. Blue Peel RADIANCE is not intended for home use and must be used by a licensed medical professional only.
The team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service and are always happy to talk you through any questions you may have. Visit www. skindoctorclinics.co.uk or call 01904 633833.
