I’ve got some personal news that I would like to share with you, dear reader. This will be my final edition of Your Local Link. I’ve been here for nearly ten marvellous years, starting at Your Local Link when I was just 18 years old. I’ve gone from teenager to adult with wonderful people that have guided me through life’s trials and tribulations. I’ve interviewed celebs, been on some unforgettable trips and made friends for life. Most importantly, I got to see first-hand what an amazing city we live in, and it’s not something I’ll forget any time soon. It’s a big scary move, and I know there’s plenty to miss. Maybe it will be the hilarious, heartwarming letters from you guys, or not

having you to keep me in check when we’ve gone wrong. I’ll definitely miss the pingpong table downstairs or the 4pm ‘what are we having for tea’ chats in the office. One thing I do know is that I’m leaving the magazine knowing it’s in safe hands. As usual, we have so many wonderful local businesses ready and waiting to help with whatever it is that you need, and that’s something that will carry on indefinitely. Take care, Krystal

TIC KE TS , PL EA SE ! North Yorkshire Moors Railway is now open for its 2022 season. New for 2022, The NYMR has launched a host of exciting suggested itineraries to help visitors plan their journeys and make the most of their experience, taking in all there is to offer along the line. And there's plenty to look forward to in 2022: •Annual Steam Gala (2225 September) - a chance to experience a range of iconic steam locomotives, along with traction

engines and the much-loved annual beer festival. •Light Spectacular (22-30 October) - enjoy an hour-long illuminated journey from Pickering to Levisham Station, with carriages adorned with 17,000 LEDs. A one-ofa-kind highly visual and audio-based event. •Santa Specials (Selected dates during December) - the ultimate family festive adventure on board the Santa Express and the chance to

JOIN THE CLUB Walk, don’t run Are you looking for a new way to keep fit, without it taking too much of a physical toll? Walking Football is just as it sounds…. a slower pace of the beautiful game, open to anyone and a great way to enjoy taking part with a little healthy competition and much less physical impact. York City FC runs sessions on Mondays and Thursdays at Burnholme Community Hub and Wednesdays at Huntington Secondary School. The sport is ideal for over 50s but open to all ages and costs £5 per session. For more information call 07834 588259 or email inclusion@yorkcityfcfoundation.co.uk.

meet and greet Santa and his elves in a truly unique setting. Prices for the popular attraction start from £20.50 for children and £41 for adults and £84 for a family for full line return tickets, with reserved seats, on the ‘Seaside Special’ from Pickering or ‘Yorkshire Express’ from Whitby. Shorter journeys are also available to buy on the day from the booking offices. For more information or to book tickets, visit nymr.co.uk.

Boot The Blues This weekly recreational football session is facilitated by York City FC Foundation, and they’re looking to get more men involved. As well as helping physically and mentally, the fun football sessions are also a great way to meet likeminded people and get a bit of social time in. Think of it like a peer support group, providing a safe space to play and share. The goal is to improve wellbeing through the power of football. And you’ll get to play in the 3G cages at the LNER Community Stadium! There’s no need for prior experience and all abilities are welcome. If you are interested in attending, you can simply drop in to a session, or for more information, email community@yorkcityfcfoundation.co.uk or call 01904559508.

Make a song and dance about it Ladies, Morris dancing isn’t just for fellas. In fact, there’s a group in York that’s been going since 1977 specifically for women and girls. Morris dancing is a type of folk dance that involves rhythmic stepping with sticks and handkerchiefs. The local group, Acorn Morris, is on the lookout for new members and musicians of all ages. The group meets on Wednesday evenings from 8pm to 9.15pm at the Creative Centre, York St. John University. For further information, visit www.acornmorris.co.uk or contact Jonathan 01904 659600.

HOROSCOPES TAURUS

TH

James Christie Free advice and helpline, email: jcp@magepublishing.co.uk

This is very much a healing month for many Taureans, and the word ‘healing’ has many different connotations. If there have been health problems (physical or mental), May should see the turning of the tide – but it is broader than that!

Old wounds caused by conflicts and quarrels in the past can now start being put into perspective, enabling you to find deeper qualities of understanding and acceptance, and more recent family rifts can now start being rebuilt and put back together.

May is also destined to be quite an ‘educational’ month in which you begin to make sense of some of the crazy and unexpected twists and turns your life has taken over the years: yes, there are still some lessons to be learned, some surprises

to be experienced (and hopefully enjoyed!) and your glass, which has been a glass half empty for such a long time, now becomes a glass half full. You will take a certain degree of delight and confidence from this realisation!

GEMINI 21

CANCER

LEO 23

VIRGO 23

ST

MAY - 20TH JUN

A frustrating few weeks wherein things do not happen nearly as quickly as you’d like them to – or indeed, as quickly as you have been led to believe that they would! There is some preponderance of involvement with bureaucracy and with people who talk the talk but then trip over and fall flat on their faces when they try to walk the walk. Conclusion? Do not expect too much from others at this time and keep pushing for what you want and have been promised.

12

20 APR - 20 MAY ST

ASTROLOGIST

21ST JUN - 22ND JUL

A faster and brighter month than some you have known this year as plans start falling into place, doors that have been closed start creaking open, and people make good on their promises. This latter aspect probably brings the greatest surprise and pleasure, and you may well need to start reviewing your opinions of some of the key players in your life, especially those who have failed and disappointed you in the past.

RD

JUL - 22ND AUG

Probably more money going out than there is coming in, but this seems to be planned budgeting, so we can only hope you know what you’re doing! Certainly, if you’re spending to impress a member of the opposite sex, you’ll succeed in cartloads, so social and romantic outlooks are extremely favourable – especially over weekend periods. Older Leo males who’ve got a few bob in the bank might want to be a bit cautious…

RD

AUG - 22ND SEPT

Female members of the sign will inevitably find themselves acting as referees and counsellors between warring male parties – and sorry girls, sooner or later, you’re going to have to pick a side! Virgo males, on the other hand, couldn’t care less what is happening in other peoples’ lives because they’re far too busy following their own aiming points and ambitions and will enjoy some spectacular success between the 18th and 24th.

RD

SEPT - 22ND OCT

A lovely feeling of freedom and independence influences lady Librans, causing them to act impulsively in pursuit of a little bit more fun and laughter. This will inevitably cause some confusion among friends and family, who will find it hard to understand what you’re doing and why… Gentlemen, in particular, will suffer from this, which just goes to prove you know a lot of dinosaurs!

SCORPIO 23

RD

OCT - 21ST NOV

You may be criticised for doing something which other people have got away with doing for years – in which case I hope you react accordingly. A romantic opportunity around the middle of the month might be seen as a mistake, so proceed with caution. Brighter moods descend in late May, giving you a trouble-free run into June.

SAGITTARIUS 22

ND

NOV - 21ST DEC

A grumpy start to the month when it becomes apparent that you’re not going to get your own way on issues of principle which may seem to be of great importance, but which are not very important at all. It looks like a partner is putting their foot down and making a bit of a stand against your preconceptions of how they should be behaving.

CAPRICORN 22

ND

DEC - 19TH JAN

One way or another you’re going to be given a much clearer view of your future as May unfolds! On a parochial level, there are some highs around the 4th, 5th and 6th counterbalanced by some annoying and frustrating delays around the 18th and 19th when some schedules

and appointments will have to be changed at very short notice. Relationships are solid, based on mutual need as much as love.

AQUARIUS 20

TH

JAN - 18TH FEB

An odd month of rather extreme mood swings! Elements of laziness and boredom clash with a desire to achieve something important – not in the future, but right now! Realising that this cannot be done makes you impatient and irritable with other people which causes them to lose sympathy for you, and this, of course, makes you even more pi$$ed off. If I were you, I’d go back to bed and look forward to June.

PISCES 19

TH

YORK LIFE

LIBRA 23

FEB - 20TH MAR

Certain people are going to tell you “no you can’t do that!” In times gone by you might have accepted this with a degree of resignation, but this time around you’re going to ask 'why?' and demand an answer. When you don’t get that answer or at least a satisfactory one, you will fly in the face of convention, do what you wanted to do in the first place, and see what happens next. It will be very little, but you’ll have called someone’s bluff!

ARIES 21

ST

MAR - 19TH APRIL

An easy-going month in which a deeper degree of compromise and understanding is found within relationships, and more often than not, you find yourself singing from the same hymn sheet. Travel aspects tie in with family reunions and longer distance travel options are looked at later in the year. A lot of pleasure is being taken at the moment from the little things in life.

YORK LIFE

STORY OF THE MONTH•

THE STORY OF THE BEAR “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was Bear.” “What are you after, Little Kathryn? Do you want him?” James chuckled, and Patricia chuckled with him, as Little Kathryn continued to frantically point at the object in the window. She smiled and struggled in anticipation, nearly squeezing herself out of her father’s arms.

16

“Put her down, James... let’s take her inside and see what we can do.” James handed her over to his wife and the three of them walked into the shop. “Little Bears.” said James. “I wonder what this sells.” Pat raised her eyebrows and ignored the comment, looking around at the inside of Little Bears. It sold teddy bears. It sold a lot of teddy bears. There were teddy bears from the floor to the ceiling. The title of the shop was a little misleading, Pat thought – there were little bears, that was true, but there were also large bears, and two or three huge bears leaning against a mantelpiece, almost as if they were holding it up. She hoped that Little Kathryn wanted the bear she had been pointing at, as she was not sure that they would be able to get one of the big bears in the car. To be fair to Little K, there was not much she wanted. If she wanted something, though, she made sure her parents knew about it. She had not learned to talk yet, but she was close. Words had not come to her, but Pat felt that when they did, their daughter would have a lot to say. “Excuse me... can we take a look at one of the bears in the window, please?” said Pat.

The girl (was she in her teens? It was so difficult to tell! She must be getting older. Pat reminded herself to look at a policeman at some point in the near future. If they looked young, then she really was getting older). The girl (her name tag said ‘Sally’) turned and smiled. “Just follow where my daughter is pointing, she should be able to lead you to him.” Sally laughed. “Kathryn is not able to talk yet, but she can certainly let you know which one he is.” Sally looked at James and then at Little Kathryn. “Can you point me to the bear you are interested in, Kathryn?” Kathryn nodded, frantically, pointing desperately with one hand and holding on to her father’s with the other. Sally followed the pointing finger and headed to the window. “I think it is the one closest to the door – yes, that’s the one,” said James, as Sally picked up one of the bears by the leg

and brought it into the main area. Kathryn was nearly purple as she saw the bear being brought over. Pat was pleased that Kathryn had stuck to the bear in the window and that the bear in the window was not half as big as half of the bears on offer at Little Bears, and suspected that once Kathryn had got her hands on him, she was not going to let go. Sally smiled at Kathryn, clearly as smitten with their child as Kathryn was with the bear. “Do you like your bear, Kathryn?” she said, as James handed the bear over to his daughter, who hugged it and obviously had no intention of letting go. Little Kathryn looked up at Sally, clearly thrilled that this nice lady had handed her her new friend and trying to think of a way to thank her. “Bear,” said Little Kathryn, quite clearly, and three mouths fell open.

joy of it. I am married to a beautiful woman who loves teddy bears and, as she does, I have to as well. They are lovely creatures, once you get to know them. Just don't sneak up on them, they really don't like it.

YORK LIFE

Getting there

This is a walk of wide views and quiet valleys. After climbing high onto the Wolds from Bishop Wilton, where there are far-reaching vistas over the Vale of York, the walk arrives at the hamlet of Great Givendale with its picturesque church. The route then traverses typical Wolds country, dipping into a deep valley before returning to the top of the escarpment and dropping back down through hillside pastures to Bishop Wilton.

Directions

1 Staring from the Fleece Inn door, go right on road. Continue for 350 metres until the footpath sign on the left. Go through a gate and head up the hillside keeping close to the hedge left. Remain near the hedge as the path steepens near the top of the field to reach the fence corner. 2 Turn right as signed with fence left and bank/ hedge right. Remain close to the hedge as it swings left to the kissing gate. Through, go uphill for 40 metres and take the path right at a further kissing gate. Now follow a fenced path along the top of the field keeping the hedge left, eventually reaching the gate leading to the hedged track. Follow track staying right at the fork to reach the road.

4 Immediately through the second gate head left uphill alongside the plantation. Where trees end keep across the grass to gate ahead. Through the gate take the left path walking uphill for 600 metres with a hedge right to the road. 5 Go left on road and continue for over a mile using a wider left verge to avoid passing traffic. 100 metres beyond Foxwood Lodge fork left on a smaller road. Follow this but after the road begins to dip take the signed path left opposite the telegraph pole.

6 Walk alongside hedge then plantation right. Continue beside hedge with deep valley right until gate left. Here turn sharp right and head very steeply downhill towards gates soon visible in the valley bottom. Through, walk ahead 20 metres 3 Turn left walking through Great Givendale. At to waymark post, then go very steeply uphill as the T junction go through a metal gate right of the directed soon using rough steeps to reach chalk road sign walking down a gravel path to the church. track. Turn right and follow the track which curves left Keep right of the church to a gate. Through, walk into trees. Continue ahead when track leaves trees ahead for a short distance under trees to the track. keeping by hedge right to the road. Turn right going downhill with ponds in the valley below. Remain on track, passing a green building left. Beyond, continue on the grass with a stream right to double gates and a bridge over another stream joining from left.

The recommended starting Miles point is the crossroads Hours in Bishop Wilton by the Fleece Inn. Bishop Wilton is 15 miles from York following the A166 and turning right at the bottom of Garrowby Hill. Bus 747 runs three times per day from York Railway Station to Bishop Wilton Mon.-Sat. stopping at the crossroads. The last return bus is currently at 14.18. It is also possible to start the walk in Great Givendale using roadside parking.

Is this walk for me? This is a fairly challenging walk. There are two climbs, one with steep sections and another with steps. There is also a very steep descent. Path conditions are generally good although there are boggy areas on the ascent and descent from the Wolds with a potentially very muddy stretch near the end of the walk. Roads are followed for 1½ miles. These carry local traffic only and mostly have wide grass verges.

What to see Bishop Wilton is one of the York area’s most attractive villages with quiet streets on either side of its long green beck, lined with an interesting mix of buildings. The stand out feature of Great Givendale is the beautifully situated church of St Ethelburga around which there’s a carpet of snowdrops and aconites in spring. The valley beyond the church, and the steeper sided Deep Dale crossed later, are typical of the Wolds. In good visibility, the views from above Bishop Wilton extend across the Vale of York to the Pennines.

Refreshments The Fleece Inn at Bishop Wilton is open daily except for Monday. The recommended alternative is Bishop Wilton Community Shop nearby which has a café area and is open daily.

Go through this and further gate in five metres walking beneath power lines to another kissing gate and boardwalk. LIKE BUSES You wait for ages for a bus, and then 44 come along all at once. Or at least that’s the case for us in York after City of York Council was awarded £8.4million of funding to support the purchase of 44 fully electric buses. The council submitted the multi-millionpound bid to the Government’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme to further support the roll-out of zero-emission buses in York, where 33 electric buses already operate in the city’s Park and Ride service. The ZEBRA bid also brings significant

investment in York from FirstGroup, with First pledging £10m towards the new buses, alongside the DfT’s £8m. The new buses will be used on First’s routes 1, 4, 5, 6, the Hospital Shuttle Bus and Park and Ride route 2. After the fleet is delivered, York will have 77 electric buses in total, operating more than half the mileage in the city. This will reduce carbon emissions in York by 2,300 tonnes per year. Cllr Andy D’Agorne, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Transport at City of York Council, said: “We are delighted to be successful in receiving over £8.4million in funding towards providing clean, zero-emission public transport across the city. The city’s Bus Service Improvement Plan is also a key supporting policy underpinning the council’s new Local Transport Plan, and I hope Government will announce funding for this shortly.

SPORT

YORK

We hear from our resident sports writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson. Recently I lost a relative who was a big York City fan and loved his football and sport. He was someone who, when I was younger, dedicated a lot of time to being a steward at the football at Bootham Crescent, and I always remember him being one of the first faces I'd see as I walked through the car park. When I think back, my dad also told me tales of when he used to do the doors for the city supporters club and the stories I've been told over the years. The recent completion of the sale of Bootham Crescent and the move to the new stadium has really made me think of all the history that goes before it and the tales others must have themselves like I've read on social media over the last year or so. It's a special place. My mum and dad met in the supporters club too. It was always a proper family affair and a hub for the local community where everyone would go. I've said before that football is only part of it. Meeting up with friends and family is an even bigger way of life too. The club being on my doorstep throughout life has meant a lot to myself and my family over the years and the deal now having gone through will see a real change in

landscape. Looking forward now that the sale has gone through and focusing back on the club now is what happens next? The building of relationships between the Supporters Trust and the chairman certainly seems to be very optimistic. The full extent of Jason McGill's future will be an interesting one as to whether he continues to lead the club going forward with now permanent manager John Askey into a new era for the club or if a new man comes in to take over. Whatever does happen though, the future feels brighter and finally, things seem to be heading in a much more positive direction. But it's not over yet. As I write this column, it feels like the playoffs will be a massive push this season. We’ve been on a cracking run and if anyone had said to me before Askey took charge that we would be in contention for the playoffs this season I’d have snapped your hand off! That's not me happy with underachieving it is more of how this season has come and again gone without a lot of success. It's been a poor season overall and the need to do better for promotion in whatever league we are in next season is the ultimate ambition all round. The

need for better recruitment is the most important thing. The last two seasons have definitely shown we have not managed to get the recruitment right and the players that will remain come to the end of the season. I think everyone has questioned many areas of the team but a revamp of the forward line is desirable, with more goals needed and keeping hold of the likes of Jameson, Kuogon and Wright is key to what we will do next season if they are open to staying with this project. There will

Simon Pattinson definitely be some surprises I imagine too as there always are but whatever happens I believe in what Askey is building, whatever division we’re in. The club is a real sleeping giant and right now the new stadium and the coming months could be the biggest since the club was formed. Then again we could just be being lured into a false sense of security and another false dawn lies ahead again next season…

Who to follow

May gardening jobs Potato, patato

Now is the time to earth up your planted potato plants to protect developing potatoes from light, to prevent them from turning green and poisonous. Pull soil up the sides of new shoots and make sure no potatoes are exposed. This is also the time to plant any potatoes you haven’t got round to doing yet.

Sow your greens

May is a good month for sowing seeds. Climbing beans, indoor cucumber and

courgettes can all be sown under cover or in the greenhouse, while lettuce, radish and spinach can be sown outside.

Flower power

Start by hardening off your bedding plants towards the end of the month by bringing them out throughout the day and putting them back under shelter in the evening. Once you’re confident that frosty nights are done for the year, you can start planting them out. It’s wise to keep some fleece handy in case there’s a surprise frost forecast.

YOUR HOME & GARDEN

EXPERT

Picked fresh from the plant and cooked within a few minutes, sweet corn, or corn on the cob if you’re from over the ocean, or maize if you keep cows, is amazing. Homegrown is always fresher and generally more flavoursome but when it comes to sweet corn, there’s no comparison between corn eaten off a homegrown cob over that wrapped in plastic from the supermarket or kernels cooked from a freezer or tin. Just picked, the corn has tenderness and sweetness that’s far superior to any you can buy. If you want to enjoy your own fresh sweet corn, May is the time to get it

going. There are two options. One is to sow seeds direct in the soil. If you do this, it’s best to wait until the middle of the month to ensure the soil is warm enough for germination. Generally, this isn’t a method I’d recommend as the plants may struggle to emerge and are vulnerable to weather and pests. A far better option is to set out young plants. These are fairly readily obtainable from garden centres but it’s also relatively easy to grow your own, especially if you’ve a greenhouse or other protected. Sow indoors from the beginning of May using individual pots for each plant. Keep the seedlings protected, especially on

cold nights, as they are vulnerable to frost, until the very end of the month. Once it’s safe to plant, set the young corn out in a block pattern rather than in lines. This will help with pollination which is dependent on the wind. Take care when removing from pots as sweet corn resents root disturbance. After planting there’s not much to do other than occasional watering and weeding. Generally, sweet corn will grow well unless the summer is unseasonably cold. As the cobs begin to ripen rodents, squirrels, pheasants and, if you’re out in the wilds, badgers, may try to share the crop, so keep a constant watch. Wind can also be a problem in exposed situations. Here staking plants is a wise precaution. Sweet corn is ready to harvest once the tassels at the end of the cob have turned chocolate brown. To be sure the cob is ready, test a kernel by peeling back a little husk and puncturing a few kernels with a fingernail. If a clear liquid is exuded, the cob is not ready. If the kernels are hard to pierce, the

Tony Chalcraft corn is overripe and will be chewy. It’s a creamy liquid that you want to see. If this oozes from the kernels, harvest immediately and head straight for the kitchen. Flavour rapidly deteriorates once a cob is off the plant. To get the best out of sweet corn if growing your own from seed, it’s also worth considering what type and variety to try. There are three categories of sweet corn seed available usually labelled, super sweet, extra tender and standard. The standard varieties are now generally of inferior quality and outclassed, certainly in the flavour department. You might be thinking super sweet would be the most delectable, but in my experience, that’s not always the case as it can be too sugary. What’s more, it is temperamental in a cool Yorkshire summer and needs to be grown in isolation from other types to avoid cross-pollination. I prefer the tender sweet types, which are still sweet but are not overpoweringly sugary, with a more authentic sweet corn taste. Two varieties of this type I usually grow are Lark and Swift.

TAC K L I N G LO N E L I N E SS Loneliness is affecting more and more of us and has had a drastic impact on our mental health since the pandemic began. That’s why it’s been chosen as the theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, which takes place from the 9th to the 15th of May. The Mental Health Foundation’s research found that loneliness has been made much worse by the Covid pandemic. Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of

the Mental Health Foundation, said: “Our connection to other people and our community is fundamental to protecting our mental health, so we must find better ways of tackling the epidemic of loneliness. We can all play a part in this. The week is also an invaluable opportunity for people to talk about all aspects of mental health, with a focus on providing help and advice.”

Give us a home... Elvington Scouts plant trees to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Elvington Scout Group rolled up their sleeves, wielded their spades and made history in April when they planted fourteen five-foot-tall, silver birch trees with a plaque to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The trees have been planted along Yorkshire Air Museum’s entrance at Elvington, thanks to a partnership between Elvington Scouts, the Museum and William Birch. The surrounding estate and approach to the museum alongside the famous Elvington Airfield are owned by William Birch & Sons Ltd, who helped with preparing the ground and purchasing the trees. Chris Birch, Chairman of William Birch, said: “We are pleased that our long association with the museum continues and that we are able to support further links with the local community including Elvington Scouts with this very fitting tribute to the Jubilee celebrations.

York Cats Protection DOOGIE HOWSER & TRAPPER JOHN, Male, 8 years old and 3 years old Is there a doctor in the house? Why yes, there are two actually, and these Docs, Doogie Howser and Trapper John are quite an unlikely pairing, given they were on our TV screens in separate decades, but for some reason, they just work! These two fine fellows work with surgical precision when it comes to matters of the heart, and together they use their wit, cunning and charisma to win over even some of the thickest skinned humans out there. Their previous owner sadly had to let them go due to her ill health but told us that since the get-go these boys have been inseparable. You couldn’t ask for a finer duo with Doogie.H and Trapper.J, so don’t risk delaying your appointment to come and see our resident Doctors, it could be bad for your health!

HAVE A HOME? THESE CUTIE PIES NEED ONE.

CRIMBLE CRUMBLE, Female, 1 ½ years old Crimble Crumble came to Cats Protection after they were contacted by her owner, who had decided that they no longer wanted a cat. Understandably Crimble Crumble has found the transition from home life to Adoption Centre a bit disorientating, and she doesn’t seem to know how to react. If she can approach the team on her own terms to say hello, she seems interested, however, she isn’t yet at the point where she fully trusts people, and if anything spooks her, she will run back to the safety of her cabin or give a quick bop to tell us to back off. We are hopeful that in a quiet home where she can be given time and If you could give one of these cutie pies a home, contact York Cats Protection Adoption Centre on 01904 760356 or via www.cats.org.uk/york

Dogs Trust LOUISE, FEMALE, nearly 1 year old Louise is a playful, fun and loving crossbreed who lives life to the full. Her past is unknown, as she was found on the streets in January, but her future looks bright once her pawfect home is found. It won’t be long before she celebrates her first birthday, and the team at Dogs Trust would love to find her the best birthday present a rescue dog could wish for – a loving home. Louise is a fantastic dog who is bursting with potential. There is no doubt she enjoys every second of every day, which can be seen from her boundless enthusiasm and excitable nature. She has learnt basic commands and, although she is very strong on the lead, she is learning to walk nicely. Louise gets excited about almost everything so she can forget to keep her paws on the ground. This enthusiasm and her strength mean she requires an adult only home with adopters who enjoy an active lifestyle as Louise loves her walks. Anyone interested in meeting lively Louise should visit www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming to start the virtual adoption process.

A local church has been awarded over half a million pounds in funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to restore its stained glass. All Saints Church, North Street in York,

now has £531,000 for the restoration work. The stained glass will also be the inspiration for this year’s Flower Festival floral creations by students from Askham Bryan College. York residents and tourists are invited to drop into the church to admire the floral arrangements, view the historic windows and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere during the church’s Flower Festival in May. All Saints North Street contains an exceptional collection of stained glass dating from the second quarter of the 14th century and the first half of the 15th century, distributed across thirteen windows. The glass is not only of great quality, but is also of exceptional interest, with windows depicting rare, and in one instance unique, subjects in stained glass. The Flower Festival takes place Thursday-Sunday 5-8 May with fantastic floral arrangements being created by students from Askham Bryan College. The flower festival is free to attend and all are welcome to visit and enjoy the beautiful flower displays. Refreshments will be available. All Saints North Street is open daily 10am – 4pm. Services are held weekly on Thursdays at 12:45 and on Sundays at 7:30pm, and at 10:30am on the first Sunday of the month.

Heads up York gamers: You can now get real-life XP by studying towards an esports diploma at York College. YORK College is planning to put itself at the heart of the region’s competitive gaming industry by launching a full-time esports diploma and its own esports team. The BTEC Level 3 course will launch this September, and there’s set to be a bespoke esports area housing highspec PCs. Esports, which sees video gamers compete in tournaments for prizes, enjoyed an overall sector growth of 8.5 per cent annually between 2016 and 2019 in the UK. the industry is now worth more than £112million per year, according to the UK video game trade body Ukie. Amy Gledhill, Deputy Head of Sport, Public Services, Hair & Beauty at York College, said: “The esports sector now offers a serious career path. There is a real industry growing up around the tournaments, and our courses will cover everything from event management and entrepreneurship to strategies, wellbeing and nutrition.” “Our esports students will then have the option of heading into the fast-growing higher

education provision for esports or an industry apprenticeship. The qualification is endorsed by the British Esports Association which means it’s recognised by employers and will support entry into the industry in a range of roles.” “The course isn’t just about playing games - this is about providing a solid foundation for learners to develop technical and transferable skills and gain experience in a variety of different sections of the esports industry. This can lead to many career paths such as esports player, team coach, data analyst, events manager or health and fitness coach.” York College is now inviting applications for its BTEC Level 3 Foundation in esports. PASS THE PAPERWORK This month, our resident travel expert, Kerry Lakey, is getting you prepared for your holidays. With summer just around the corner for many, this will be their first time travelling overseas since 2019. Whilst international travel is gradually returning to a pre-pandemic experience, things have changed, and this month we will be sharing tips on how to have a smoother journey. •Firstly, make sure you check your passports are valid for travel. Since leaving the EU, passport validity requirements have changed meaning you must now have at least three months beyond your return date to the UK for travel within Europe. For some countries, this could be as much as six months. Passports are now only valid for a full 10 years from the date of issue, so if you had a new passport issued 01.01.2018 but had time remaining on your old one, this may have been carried forward, giving a new expiry date, for example, 01.04.2028, this would now

only be valid to 01.01.2028. A quick tool to check this can be found at gov.uk/guidance/passport-rules-fortravel-to-europe. Passport renewals are taking longer than normal, so if you plan to travel be sure to apply early. •If you have previously held a travel insurance policy with your bank make sure this is all still in place and they don’t have any specific covid vaccination requirements that could impact your cover. •Check you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), if this has expired apply for your free Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) nhs. uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare-abroad/ apply-for-a-free-uk-global-healthinsurance-card-ghic/ •Check you know the covid requirements where you are visiting, some countries have certain

EVENTS // FOOD & DRINK

Add a little bit of spice A Yorkshire family of entrepreneurs have set their sights on giving back to those in need by setting up Go Indian Spice. Dave Singh and Lucky Kaur are hoping to help others through their tasty offering of Indian Spice blends and donate a percentage of sachets of the homemade products to ‘spice up’ food parcels given out by the Salvation Army. Inspired by his single mother, who lived on the breadline and made the most of her empty fridge by spicing up baked beans and scrambled eggs, Dave Singh set up Go Indian Spice with his wife Lucky Kaur. The pair, who are now based in York, hope their affordable spice blends will help other families like theirs to batch cook and eat healthily on a budget. More families are struggling to make ends meet with a rise in fuel and energy prices: “But that doesn’t have to mean bland food,” explains Lucky Kaur. Their first ingredient in business is spice blends which they hope will be their recipe to success, and then they hope to start their own charity. Owner Dave said: “I was brought up in a poor part of Glasgow with a single mother, and often we didn’t know if there would be food on the table. “But when there was food, even if all she could afford was some eggs and baked beans, she would make us baked bean curry or masala scrambled

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

This summer saled is crunchy, fresh and full of delicious flavours. It’s ideal to pair with grilled tempeh or tofu or if you want to make it a bit more substantial you can also add some cooked quinoa. We love how the tahini dressing brings everything together and adds a luscious creaminess to this salad. Ingredients: • 1 JAZZ™ Apple • 1 courgette • A generous handful of rocket • 3 tbsp of walnut roughly chopped

He said: “Being a foodie doesn’t have to be just for the wealthy. All of us deserve to taste flavoursome food.” “My mum used to be so creative she inspired me to make the most of everything.” Want to order a spice pack? Visit www.goindianspice.com.

JAZZ™Apple Courgetti Salad With a Tahini Dressing

For the tahini dressing: • 2 tbsp of tahini • The juice of 1/2 lemon • 1/2 tsp of white miso paste • 1/2 tsp of maple syrup • 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar • Water to thin in as desired • Salt and pepper to taste

To make the tahini dressing simply mix together all the ingredients. I like to use a small whisk to avoid any lumps. Add the water gradually until you have reached the desired consistency. Add the chopped walnuts to a frying pan and toast them on a medium heat for a few minutes, tossing them from time to time until they start to turn golden brown. Spiralize the apple and the courgette. Transfer them to a large bowl and pour over the tahini dressing. Mix in the rocket. Serve straight away with the toasted walnuts.

What’s new? Right Royal Pickle £5.80 for 200g from tracklements.co.uk Tracklements has launched a celebratory pickle for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. The Right Royal Pickle is the perfect street party condiment, combing vegetables, sweet Muscovado sugar,

malt vinegar, tamarind paste, chilli, all spice and a squeeze of lemon to create a tasty tangy pickle with a crunch. Pair it with a strong crumbly cheddar, on thick slices of ham or on a Scotch egg.
