YORK’S TIME TO SHINE York does this time of year really well. The Christmas lights start going up, we celebrate the downfall of York’s homegrown Tudor rebel, Guy Fawkes, and the City Walls look extra majestic stood on a bed of red and gold leaves. Give me big jackets, fireworks, conkers, mulled wine, pink sunsets over the Minster and the return of Thor’s Tipi: it’s all good. But what really makes York special is the people who live here. And let me just say, you guys have aced it this season.

So much so that we’ve been inspired to create a new feature, focusing specifically on the decent stuff you’ve been up to.

One woman raised £877.45 following a 24hr bake-a-thon as part of Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, a new community radio station launches on November 4th, and there’s been the installation of a beautiful new mural near York station. Our community is amazing, and the feel-good stories have just kept coming.

You can read all about them in our new feature called Glass Half Full on page 40.

Some of this stuff is simply too good not to share. So from now on we want to offer you guys a platform to share your local success stories. Raised loads for charity? Launching a new initiative that will benefit the community? Has your local business achieved something we can all feel proud about? Did you hear an inspiring story about someone in York?

EDITOR’S LETTER

If you have a local success story you think we should know about, I want to hear about it. Email krystal@yourlocallink.co.uk or call 01904 735216 for a chinwag. I can’t wait to find out about all the great things you guys have been up to. Speak soon!

These are the tales we love to hear about and would love to share even more.

And where better to spend the creepiest night of the year than the creepiest place in town? And it’s a double whammy – because you can also find out all about the horrible past of our very own Guy Fawkes as we approach Bonfire Night.

FEATURES 20. TIME TRAVEL. Ever gone to the Pizza Express on Lendal Bridge and thought to yourself: ‘Ey up, this is a posh place to have a pepperoni pizza’? Well, surprise surprise, it wasn’t built for the sole purpose of serving up garlic bread. Find out all about the history of River House in this month’s Time Travel. 18-19. WALKING WITH THE WANDERER. You’re in for a stunning trek this month (although aren’t all of our Wanderer’s walks stunning?!), as we take you through the beautiful village of Ampleforth.

COLUMNS 14. CLAIRE. Our Claire’s taking a trip down memory lane and back to her school days this month – but she reckons

some of the things she learnt in class maybe weren’t the best things to have spent time on. Was learning the names of different types of triangles really a good use of time? Or would that time have been better spent understanding taxes? We’ll let you decide for yourselves. 10-11. YORK LIFE. Rachel Ragg’s accidentally bought a TV – which means she’s now an expert in all the things we love to watch and natter about. Think you know Game of Thrones? Reckon you can name every contestant ever on Love Island? Pit your knowledge against Rachel’s on page 10. 44. HOWARD. Uh oh – technology’s got the better of Howard this month, as his smart home forms a mind of its own and turns the tables on our gadget-savvy columnist. Alexa: take us to page 44.

EVENTS 50. EVENTS HOTLIST. The best of the cream. The crème de la crop. In other words, our favourite events. 50-59. EVENTS & THEATRE. It’s November – that wonderful month balancing perfectly between Halloween and Christmas. So you can imagine how busy and exciting our Events Diary is this month. In fact, you don’t have to imagine. Just flick to pages 50-59 now.

Our shiny website, www.yourlocallink.co.uk, is filled with original content that you won’t find in the magazine. This month, check out…

FEATURES CLAIRE’S TECH TALK. World-famous online game Fortnite recently experienced some unexplained downtime, leaving avid gamers confused and concerned. But have no fear – it came back bigger and better after what turned out to be just a very elaborate update. REVIEWS, REVIEWS, REVIEWS. We’ve been here, there and everywhere – and told you all about it! Pop online and find out exactly what we thought about theatre and events around York – and what to look out for. This month, Claire’s been to see Little Shop of Horrors and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

AND LIFE IN GENERAL There are many things in which I am an expert. Nineteenth century Austrian literature, for instance. Laundry. The route from central York to the Northminster Business Park in Poppleton. Erm... well, I am sure there are lots of other things, though they escape me at the moment. Though there is the thing in which I am most expert of all, namely television programmes. I last watched television before my first child was born, so that would make it 18 years ago. However, I recently bought a television, because it fell into my trolley when I went to return a sheet to Monks Cross John Lewis. I also own a television licence, because traffic wardens are bad enough, without the telly-licence people coming to arrest me as well. The television is not plugged in. The fact that I don't have an aerial was a bit of a disincentive. However, I did take it out of its box, just to see what it looked like. It was rather disappointing. I was expecting something big and bulky

with a nice storage area on top, where I could display the wicker Spanish dancing lady my granny kindly left me when she died. However, this is a flatscreen item, which is no use at all. And so it remains gathering dust. Meanwhile, though, its very presence in the house has enabled me to become an expert television critic. Or at least one along the lines of Richard Ingrams, who apparently watched it from a different room when he was the telly critic of The Spectator. This is a life-changing discovery. Conversations with friends have been transformed. Rather than them saying: "Did you see...?" and me replying in a conversation-killing manner: "Um, no, I don't have a telly", I can join in wholeheartedly. My days as a social outcast are over.

And so I know all about Downtown Abbey. That's the one which features Chicago drug dealer "Lady Mary" (clearly her rapper-name) and Mr Bates, innit? Unless I'm thinking of Downturn Abbey, which must be the BBC2 economics one. Then there's Antiques Roadkill. I'm pretty sure that's the one where the presenter trawls through the freezers of all the nice houses outside Malton, wondering what to cook for supper. Or do I mean Antiques Road-rage, where all the oldies of York start fist-

waving and horn-honking at middleaged female cyclists for having the temerity to exist? I could not write authoritatively about TV programmes without mentioning the one that everyone talks about: The Line of Beauty. I heard someone once refer to it as The Line of Duty, but they evidently don't watch telly, so have no idea what they are talking about. Presented by Phil and Kirsty, it's a lingering look at the row of houses stretching from The Mount to St George's Place, with a spin-off series

involving Mount Parade. Of course, teenagers are catered for with Love Island. That's the one with the Cornish farmer brandishing his scythe as he emerges from a lake in a wet t-shirt. Or now I come to think about it, I'm not so sure. It might in fact be the docudrama about what the hen-nighters and shouty baldies get up to on Foss Islands Road on Saturday nights. Kwik Fit plays a starring role. I think that one is probably related to Big Inflatable Brother and Naked Bungle, though I have to confess that I am slightly less expert in this field. More salubrious are the telly programmes that aren't intended as post-pub entertainment. Game of Thrones and The Crown, for instance, which are gripping tales of the rivalry between the families of Prince William and Prince Harry. I know this to be the case, as it is often mentioned in the Mail Online. And I really am an expert in Gentleman Jack, as I watched it being filmed. Therefore I know that it was a drama about ladies and gentlemen repeatedly walking up and down, wearing Olden Days

YORK LIFE

I last watched television before my first child was born, so that would make it 18 years ago. costumes. I even know that this one involved a horse, so I would say that this programme could possibly be my specialist subject on Mastermind. The medical profession is, as I know, well represented by Dr Who. That's the one with the grisly cycling accidents. Unless that's 24 Hours in A&E. It's easy to muddle them up. Fleabag is the one that features Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick operating on dogs. As for One Born Every Minute: that's the one aimed at the people who believe the word ‘gullible’ has been erased from the dictionary. As for costume dramas: it's all about Jane Austen. There's Emma-dale Farm, the one set in the Dales. Not to mention the recent Sand Hutton (I’m sure it was the critics who were misspelling it when they called it Sanditon). When I think about this veritable feast of entertainment, I’m almost tempted to try plugging my television in. But given that I am evidently such an expert already, I can only think that this would be Pointless.

Want to know more? Go to www.yourlocallink.co.uk to read extended versions of this month’s horoscopes!

Horoscopes SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV

This should be a very exciting month for most members of the sign, especially those who know what kind of excitement they’re looking for and who are prepared to say ‘yes’ when opportunity comes knocking at the door. Deciphering the code, all things of a romantic and sexual nature are strongly highlighted, and even those more senior members of the sign might find that there is still a good tune to be

22ND NOV

SAGITTARIUS- 21ST DEC

You realise that things have changed, and are continuing to change. Also that you have choices and options that you didn’t know you had – especially in affairs of the heart! You can’t stand still and if you can’t go backwards, there is only one direction, which is forwards. Travel new pathways with confidence and determination and all will be well.

22ND DEC

Not an easy month! Some heart to heart conversations about cash, quite a lot of pressure on the work scene, and not a lot of sweetness and light within the home. Sleep patterns could be erratic and your social life is sluggish. Quite a bit of a state, really! You need to do something about all this, and to find a solution, you must think outside the box.

James Christie

played on an old fiddle! Inevitably, there is an element of danger in all of this. For example, if you’re already committed to one relationship, it might be a bit awkward if you go looking for another (or even say yes to another when the opportunity is presented). So do keep this in mind. But if nothing else, enjoy the temptation. It must be said that throughout this ongoing process, your sexual self-

confidence gets a big boost and your imagination gets fired up – perhaps for the first time in ages. Still on a positive note, it should be quite a good month where finances are concerned – but don’t be tempted to overspend on unnecessary luxuries. For example, girls, don’t be tempted to buy that new blue dress when you know he likes you in red!

20TH JAN

AQUARIUS - 18TH FEB

Some news, possibly quite startling, from overseas may necessitate a change of plans and priorities, and some of you may find yourself booking flights at the 11th hour. Work routines are boring and predictable, but at least they’re safe. Partners tend to be volatile when you don’t pay them as much attention as they think they deserve.

PISCES

19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

There is an impetus to make a few small, but key changes in your lifestyle. Once you’ve done this (with relative ease), you’ll realise you can do so much more! A very creative period for the artistically inclined, and possibly a big chunk of money spent as an investment for your professional future. A fair outlook for all investments!

It might be the beginning of winter but there’s the scent of springtime in your heart! For some this could represent some new life in affairs of the heart, while for others it will represent being able to look forwards and knowing that long laid plans are moving towards fruition. There is an overall mood of confidence and you’re optimistic about the future.

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY

An old bogey man raises his head in November as once again you find yourself grappling with finances, and inevitably robbing Peter to pay Paul. There has to be some severe belt-tightening at this time, because a little pain now will be better than a far greater pain a bit later on. Tension in domestic situations will be caused by financial pressures.

Gemini 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN

Some frustration and even an element of anger in relationships with in-laws! You may be disappointed, perhaps even angry, but the best way to handle this is to back off, create some space, and stay calm and detached. Having said that, a firm but quiet word in someone’s ear might just be enough to bring some change to this awkward situation.

CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL

The moods inherent to October carry on over into November, but now you will start feeling more empowered to tidy up your life and get rid of the rubbish. This generates a new spark of freedom and independence, which might not go down all that well with other folk around you. But you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you’re heading in the right direction.

LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG

Some very positive vibes connected with levels of self-confidence and selfdetermination, and other people will be more or less content to follow your lead… so get leading! Some of you will be thinking about property deals and possible house moves, while others will be contemplating out-ofseason holidays and winter journeys. Journeys with point and purpose!

YORK LIFE

SCHOOL DAYS

You go to school from the age of five to 16 to learn everything you need to know for a successful and wholesome adulthood. Only you don’t. Where, during your time in school, do you learn about taxes? How to buy a house? What you have to do to get divorced? How to cram 27 appointments into a working week when you have a full-time job? All is not lost though, I’m bloody superb at algebra. And if you want to know the difference between an isosceles triangle and a scalene triangle – I’m your girl. I remember when I was at both primary and secondary school, and we’d occasionally have a lesson that was all about life. The real stuff: how to manage your finances, how to know what career you’d like and what you need to do to get it, and more. I loved it. I think, in all those years, I spent about five lessons in total studying this. All I took away from it was that as a mechanic*, I wouldn’t be able to afford a Ferrari and an eight-bed house in Mayfair. Go figure. So, as a fully-fledged 29 year old trying to understand the HMRC and how to buy my next home, I decided to put my two pence into how the educational system could be improved. Take note, Gavin Williamson.

What we learnt: The recorder. What we should have learnt: The guitar. As a professionally trained musician and creative, I’m all for having music, drama and art in our children’s curriculum. But the recorder? I mean, it never sounds good, does it? You wouldn’t see a recorder player winning Britain’s Got Talent. You probably wouldn’t tip a busking recorder player unless they were four years old and you felt sorry for them for being forced to perform by their parents. A recorder player is unlikely to make it on Radio 1. They probably wouldn’t even make it onto Eurovision, and that’s full of rubbish. The guitar on the other hand… all I need to say is: Ed Sheeran, Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. Mic drop. What we learnt: The periodic table. What we should have learnt: That Google is not a reliable source for medical information. I’m just gonna throw it out there and say that science probably shouldn’t be treated as one of the most important subjects in school. Like, having it up there with English and Maths is debatable. Unless you’re going to be a scientist in the future (in which case you’d choose that

down the line), it shouldn’t really be forced in place of something more useful. As much as it’s helped me in my professional life as a writer to know that Ag means Silver, which is not at all, I could really have done with knowing that if we want to find out what kind of backache we have then not to check Dr Google. In reality, I learnt not to trust Google’s symptom checker by being told I probably had scurvy – when it was just an iron deficiency. Yarrrrrrgh**. What we learnt: How to make a piggy bank out of papier-mâché. What we should have learnt: How to make a steak and ale pie. I think I probably speak for all of us when I say that I’ve not touched papier-mâché since I was five and three quarters. I have, however, eaten 739 quite average steak and ale pies since the age of five and three quarters. Which skill would have been more useful? You do the math.

What we learnt: How to use an overhead projector. What we should have learnt: How to use a washing machine. Remember the overhead projector? If you were really lucky, you and a friend would be chosen to wheel it out from the caretaker’s cupboard of dreams and in front of the white board to beam up everyone’s favourite hymn or excerpt from the book you were reading. I left school knowing exactly the right distance to position said OHP to ensure the best text-to-screen ratio. But I still don’t know what the H stands for on my washing machine’s dial. I mean, I could go on about this forever. Somewhere in my brain is a fly’s entire life cycle, but I still find someone else to change my lightbulbs for me. And as I doggy paddle my way through adulthood like an elephant in a bathtub, I often think fondly of my lessons on the signing of the Magna Carta. *No, not at any point did I want to be a mechanic. **Pirate noises because scurvy.

And with ‘Joe’ referring to ‘Joe Public’, Tom really does encourage any future thespians to ‘give it a go’. Workshops run on Tuesday afternoons from 12-1pm and Thursday evenings from 6-7pm at Tang Hall Smarts. n For more information, visit www.tanghallsmart.com or search for Give It a Go, Joe on Facebook.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

If you, or someone you know, would benefit from a community based café that offers pay-as-you-feel meals, then look no further than Yourcafé. And let’s be honest, what’s not to like about a friendly café environment where you can meet new people, help prevent food waste – and have a delicious meal?! Yourcafé is open every Wednesday from 11am-2pm at the Tang Hall Community Centre, and welcomes everyone through its doors to enjoy food, drink and a natter. You can tuck in to a wide range of meals – including vegetarian and vegan options – and pay what you can. Yourcafé has already saved 36 tonnes of food – and continues to help stamp out food waste in York. The team take on excess food from suppliers, add to it their fresh vegetables from the café’s own patch, and get to work on producing delicious grub. And if the chefs have food leftover still, they pass it on to parents of Tang Hall Primary School pupils, or other good causes. n Whether you want to enjoy a meal at the café or get involved in volunteering, visit www.yourcafe.co.uk to find out more.

WANDERER WALKING WITH THE

ABBEY AMBLE

This short walk is packed with interest. Starting at the attractive village of Gilling East it follows a quiet lane with views across to Ampleforth Abbey. Crossing fields to reach the edge of Ampleforth village it then passes the Abbey, which is open to visitors, before heading back to Gilling East across the extensive playing fields of Ampleforth School. The entire walk is a little over five miles and is easy to follow. Much of the route is on good surfaces with only a couple of potentially muddy areas.

Directions

1 At the Fairfax Arms take the road at the side of the pub, Pottergate. Continue down this quiet tarmac road ignoring all ways off, soon with view across the valley to Ampleforth Abbey on the right. Pass old farm buildings on the right housing a chocolatier (visitors welcome) and a sign ‘wildlife sanctuary’ on the left. Keep on the road as the surface roughens ignoring a private road to the right to continue on what has become a track. Follow this to the right at another wildlife sanctuary sign after which the track soon swings left.

2 About 75 metres beyond this left bend turn right through a gate (there’s a footpath sign opposite pointing the way partly hidden under a small tree). Beyond the gate follow the left edge of the field to another gate. Go through this following a sign to Ampleforth into a wooded area. Cross a plank bridge (this area can be muddy) and continue through the trees to emerge into a field. Go ahead along its left boundary following the path as it kinks right then left, still with open fields to the right. Eventually you come to a play area where you go straight on to reach houses at a road. Continue ahead uphill towards Ampleforth village.

18

3 Soon after a school on the left turn right into St Hilda’s Walk. Continue to pass the surgery and at another school on the right keep left where the road forks onto a stony track. Ignore a track to left and continue ahead. The track soon joins a tarmac road with houses on the right then a carpark to the left. Coming to the Abbey grounds continue on the tarmac drive with the abbey Church uphill to your left (to visit the Abbey and its tea room zigzag up the tarmac paths and go up the steps).

4 To continue the walk, where the tarmac drive comes to a cross tarmac track go right downhill through a gate following footpath waymarks towards an obvious cricket pavilion (if visiting the Abbey and tea room you need to zigzag back down the tarmac paths to this point). Continue on the tarmac road as it swings left. Soon after this at a three way junction take the middle tarmac track that quickly turns to the right to a gate marked ‘Tip Area’. Take the grassy track and at the end of the nets on the bank above turn sharp left at the bottom of a bank. Continue ahead into an area of young trees following a grassy path. Soon cross a bridge to a gate.

Miles

Getting there By car Gilling East is 18 miles north of York on the B1363. There should be space to park considerately on the main street near the Fairfax Arms. No buses run to Gilling East but service 31X from York Exhibition Square passes through Ampleforth two or three times a day. If taking the bus to Ampleforth you start the walk by turning from Station Road into St Hilda’s Walk (point 3 of the directions).

Refreshments The Fairfax Arms in Gilling East is open all day and serves food at lunch time and in the evenings. The Abbey Tea Room at Ampleforth is open until 5.30pm. To find it (it’s not well signposted from the grounds) aim for the steps in front of the Abbey and follow the signs for Reception.

What to see Gilling East is an attractive stone built village on the edge of the Howardian Hills with an ancient church. On the route out of the village you pass both the model railway run by the Ryedale Society of Model Engineers and a new social enterprise making bespoke chocolates (visitors welcome when open). Ampleforth Abbey is visible on the hillside for a large part of the walk. The Abbey Church, shop and café are open to visitors. On the hillside to the left on the return to Gilling East are glimpses of one of Anthony Gormley’s ‘Man’ sculptures (Gormely attended Ampleforth Abbey School).

Here you can go ahead over the field but the easiest return is to turn left following the beck on the field edge. At the end of the field go through a metal gate and continue on alongside the left edge of the next field to a wooden gate. Pass through this and follow the short track to the road. Here turn right to quickly return to the Gilling East.

5 Here take the lower of the signed paths into the rough pasture heading half left slightly up the slope. Here you should soon find a marker post that points the way ahead over the crest of the slope towards a stile in the treeline at the far edge of the pasture. Head for the stile and climb over (the area near it can be muddy) to immediately cross a bridge over a beck.

TimeTravel Join us as we venture back in time. No pushing, okay?

Recent news of the chain’s potential closure has forced many eyes onto Pizza Express. The restaurant has been a mainstay of the York food scene for a couple of decades now, occupying those grand premises right by the river next to Lendal Bridge. But how did a pizza restaurant come to occupy such a fancy building, and what went on there long before you lot piled in to stuff yourselves with garlic dough balls? Step this way… Club land Look up as you enter the building and you’ll see ‘River House’ set in stone above the grand marble column of the entranceway. Appropriately named, what with it being so close to the river, but the intended clientele were a tad swankier than we or thee. You see, back in the middle of the 19th century, York was a fashionable place. Far more fashionable, we might add, than it is today. With the local gentry growing in wealth and influence, and with visiting rich types coming for the horse racing, York was in need of places for those posh types to hang out, far away from the poor natives. In 1839 such a sanctuary was established at 5 St Leonard’s Place, opposite the Theatre Royal. The

Yorkshire Club was a home from home for aristocrats and wealthy industrialists, who would come to wine, dine, play, and sleep. Membership was highly exclusive, and only those with an enormous bank account, and a penis, could join. Rees-Moggian arrogance If that sounds fun, here’s a social bomb drop: these weren’t the nicest of people. In 1859 the Poor-Law Guardians, a society that helped combat the atrocious poverty in York at that time, proposed to build new offices in Museum Street. The Yorkshire Club vehemently protested this, pointing out that the poor lived in ‘other parts of the city’, not near their precious club. Apparently they feared that a proximity to improvised people would cause them to become ill. Nice. Despite their harsh views, The Yorkshire Club kept growing in popularity. In 1863 it was decided that a purpose-built home should be constructed, and a site was chosen by the river. Completed in 1869, just a few years after the brand spanking new Lendal Bridge beside it, River House became the new des-res of York’s landed gentry.

In the lap If you’ve ever dined in Pizza Express, you might have gotten a taste of the luxury the gentlemen created for themselves. The club provided them with a dining room, a bar, a billiards room, studies and several bedrooms – all catered to by staff. River House also, appropriately, had its own river landing for water-borne pursuits like boating. Today it is the boat yard of York Boat. The members would fall upon the club, feast upon the finest cuisine, stupefy themselves with whiskey, then (we assume) bellow with laughter as they made jokes about people less fortunate than themselves. Imagine Tory party HQ. Yeah, you get it. However, unlike the Tory party the club’s popularity waned during the 20th century. Social clubs such as The Yorkshire Club were closing all

across the country, as the number of aristocracy fell, while wealthy businessmen (who would not have been invited to join) formed their own clubs. Plus, following the Second World War, the population of York had become far more integrated, with the rich and poor rubbing up against each other on most streets. And no, that’s not a Grape Lane joke. Downfall By 1980 River House had been converted into offices; a trend continued today by Savilles Estate Agents occupying part of the building. Pizza Express arrived some time later, offering the ‘great unwashed’ a chance to enter a once-exclusive club and gaze across the river. For the price of a margarita pizza and side of chips, mind. If Pizza Express does indeed shut up shop, we hope it’s replaced by a business that also lets the public in to experience the grandeur. Plus it’s nice to know that all those fat, privileged men are probably turning in their graves because common people have been permitted entry. Ha.

SPORT

Local Being a lifelong York City supporter, I naturally keep thinking the bubble is going to burst after such a contrasting start to the season in comparison to the previous two campaigns in National League North. Manager Steve Watson can seemingly do no wrong after his side are still, at least at time of writing, unbeaten. The only time I have ever seen a consistent run of form was when I was in charge during an epic game of Football Manager. In fact, recently Man United approached me to take over from Ole Gunnar Solksjaer but I turned it down after thinking the squad was poor with little potential in the future. I then went back to playing my game after getting off the phone to them. Let’s hope my paranoia that York City will suddenly crack will soften during the two November league games at Bootham Crescent against Kidderminster Harriers (Nov 2nd) and the league’s surprise package Alfreton (Nov 30th). Whilst York City’s current side are well on their way to a successful season, it was great to see the blasts from the past in the recent testimonial for stalwart Dan Parslow, during the game between York City’s 2012 squad and a Dan Parslow

select York City all-stars. A fantastic crowd of over a thousand saw the likes of club legends Michael Ingham and Richard Cresswell gracing the Bootham Crescent turf once more. There were also a few interesting cameo appearances such as former manager Gary Mills playing right back for his 2012 side and Jon Parkin playing centre half in the first half, and Goalkeeper in the second. Where, to be fair, he made some top saves and showed reflexes I think even he didn’t even realise he had. I don’t know whether they were tongue-in-cheek but someone shouted: “You were

crap then and you’re crap now,” after Craig Farrell missed a sitter. Which, on a night of celebration, felt as wide off the mark as my mum’s answer to a TV game show question of naming “words ending with ‘ology’”. Bless her, quick as a flash, she banked on “Sofology” being there. Onto boxing now and after recent bad blood and social media spats, the biggest fight of the year is nearly upon us. No, not Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney but Anthony Joshua’s rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr. Promotor Eddie Hearn has said in the

Bespoke Tait DanDesi gn Manufacture Instal ation

COLUMNIST build up that Ruiz fully deserves his rematch, which made me consider whether he had been a bit punch drunk from the original fight where Ruiz Jr WON the fight.

LOCAL SPORTS

Whilst Joshua Ruiz II is eagerly anticipated, the boxing scene in York is once again thriving. Henry Wharton’s protégé, 21-year-old George Davey, capped an impressive fighting debut in front of the television, cameras on the undercard of Josh Warrington’s title defence in Leeds with a fourround shutout against Zygimantas Butkevicius. Meanwhile, another York fighter, featherweight Cam Shaw, continued his progression with his 2nd pro victory - this time over strong opponent Jake Pollard, at Doncaster Dome. Shaw, much like in his first contest, outboxed a more experienced challenger and prevailed 39-37 on the scorecard, which delighted both trainer Billy Dawson and manager Glenn Banks. Shaw continues his rapid rise with another contest on Saturday 26th October at Hull Bonus Arena.

3. ELECTRIC BLANKETS. What could be snugger than a big comfy blanket? One with a built-in heater, that’s what. But electric blankets carry their risks: if your blanket doesn’t have a thermostat control to use safely all night then always unplug it before you get into bed. You should always follow the instructions, ensure the blanket has a British Standard Kitemark, and test it every three years. Don’t buy second hand if you can help it, and always store it flat, rolled up, or loosely folded – so you don’t damage the wires. Oh, and don’t be tempted by combining a hot water bottle with an electric blanket on the coldest nights – even if the blanket is switched off you should never do this.

There’s no point pretending – the big coat has come out and the shorts have gone into storage. 4. CANDLES. While candles are popular all year Winter’s approaching. And as the cold creeps in round, they can feel especially and the blankets and hoodies comforting in the colder months stop being enough to keep (our favourites are the mulled Remember: fire alarms save lives. Always unplug electric heaters before you go out or go to bed, and make sure they’re kept away from fabrics and furniture. Don’t leave them in a position where they could fall over, and keep the room they’re in well ventilated if you’re using a gas or paraffin heater. Did you know? We all know to call 999 in an emergency – but did you know to call 105 if there’s a power cut? You’ll get local information about what to do, and you can call the number to report damage or potential risks.

DIGGING DOWN November heralds a change in the garden as autumn truly arrives, bringing with it beautiful colour and falling foliage, which transforms trees and shrubs. Although the gardening year is coming to an end, there are still plenty of jobs to do. First on the list is to cut back any perennials you may have growing in your borders. Clear away summer bedding plants and vegetable plots, and collect fallen leaves that you can use to create leaf mould – ideal for using as a mulch and feed on your soil. Hanging baskets, pots and containers can also be planted up with evergreen, flowering and berrying plants such as skimmia, ivy, viburnum – and even autumn flowering bedding such as pansies. This can add much needed colour to the garden over the winter months.

Autumn is the best time to start planning and planting established plants into soil that’s been warmed by the summer sun, before the onset of the colder winter months. When choosing plants, ensure they are suited to the conditions of the site you intend to plant them in. Our expert staff are on hand to give advice and suggestions and answer any questions you may have. Soil in new borders should be prepared first by digging in compost and organic matter, such as manure. This will improve the fertility and drainage of the soil, and in addition provides some exercise. We have a large range of composts available including some peat-free alternatives that are more environmentally friendly. It’s also been found that working with soil can boost the immune system by exposing ourselves to beneficial bacteria. So getting dirty in the garden could be what we all need! As we know, gardening has many benefits such as keeping us moving and active, and enjoying the fresh air. Being in nature also has tremendous benefits to our mental health and wellbeing, which can alleviate stress, improve mood and induce a restful night’s sleep. So wrap up warm, get outside and keep active.

Nature & Nurture

Harvest season is winding down, but never fear — here are some of the best nature events over the coming month.

Grow!

Beat the autumn blues by bringing a sense of springtime into your home - from 23rd to 30th October, Snowhome on Gillygate are handing out free acorns so you can grow your own oak tree. Fancy a spot of the great outdoors? On 29th October, 1st November and 3rd November, Nunnington Hall (www. nationaltrust.org.uk/nunnington-hall) is hosting crocus planting workshops in its lush gardens. Meanwhile on 10th November, St Nick’s (www.stnicks. org.uk) are looking for green-fingered volunteers to help plant wildflowers in Millennium Fields. If all this isn’t enough, St Nick’s will have a whole range of other nature events over the next few months: just look at page 36 for more info.

Make!

There’s plenty of creative options for little ones this autumn: on 28th October, kids can enjoy craft-making activities at Rowntree Park, whilst York Theatre Royal (www.yorktheatreroyal. co.uk) will have an Autumnal Animals art workshop on 30th October.

There’s also a bug hotel workshop with Derwenthorpe Nature Group on 29th October, and a nature-based art session for kids at The North York Moors National Park Centre (www.northyorkmoors.org. uk) on 2nd November. For a mix of art sessions, bushcraft workshops, and nature trails, Beningbrough Hall is celebrating the Magic of Trees from 26th October to 3rd November (www.nationaltrust. org.uk/beningbrough-hall-gallery-andgardens).

Look and listen!

Bit tired out from digging? If you’re not in the mood to make or plant anything, these exhibitions and talks let you enjoy nature without getting your hands dirty. In York, contemporary landscape painter Tessa Houghton (www.tessahoughton.com) will be showing her work at Pairings Wine Bar until 4th November. On 31st October, York Theatre Royal hosts storyteller Alice Courvoisier (www.talesandshapes. com) for a spoken performance on the ‘Wonder of Trees’, and wildlife presenter Gordon Buchanan is presenting his talk ‘Animal Families and Me’ at the Grand Opera House (www. atgtickets.com/venues/grand-operahouse-york) on 21st November.

Late autumn is when I start preparing for the new gardening year. This means making a start on the winter digging. Unlike many vegetable gardeners who’ve converted to ‘no-dig’, I still prefer to dig patches of the plot as they become vacant in the winter. I’m well aware of the many reasons for not digging, not least the disturbance it can cause to the soil fauna and structure. I wrote about the pros and cons of digging a year or so back so won’t revisit these issues again now – other than to say digging still works for me. It offers an opportunity to clear crops and weeds, incorporate manure and compost, and have ground

ready prepared for sowing or planting in spring. With digging a bit ‘out of fashion’, it’s worth recapping how best to go about it. Before you start wielding the spade there are two basic questions to consider: is the timing right, and are the conditions suitable? By timing I mean at what point in the autumn or winter is it best to dig? Start too early and there may be significant regrowth of weeds before the cold weather sets in. Although this can provide protective ground cover it risks further timeconsuming cultivation later. As for conditions, it’s important not to dig when the soil is sodden. Not only will you have a mud

bath, but you could harm soil structure. To some extent, when to dig depends on soil type. On my medium heavy land, some of which can get quite wet, I usually start mid- or late-November – aiming to complete most areas by midFebruary. If you’ve lighter soil it may be better to wait until late winter. On clay soils there’s an advantage to beginning early. Freezing and thawing in the coldest months helps fracture clods so that rough dug soil crumbles easily in spring. As for the actual digging process, I usually practise what’s sometimes called ‘trenching’. It’s so called because you begin by excavating a spade deep and wide straight trench at one end of the patch to be dug with the removed soil piled at the far end where you intend to finish. Manure or compost, if available or needed, can be placed at the bottom of the trench alongside which a second trench is then dug on a parallel line. The inverted soil from this is spaded into the first trench covering any compost or manure. The process then continues, a line at a time, gradually moving

EXPERT

Tony Chalcraft backwards. When the last trench is completed, the soil excavated from the first is used to fill it. This might seem a laborious process but you soon get into a rhythm. It’s important not to try and tackle too much in one session and to take the occasional break. A good spade is also essential. I prefer stainless steel, to which soil doesn’t tend to cling. Long-handled spades are another option if you want to minimise bending. As for exactly how to dig, what movements and muscles to use, this is down to individual preference, strengths and weaknesses. As the famous gardener Gertrude Jekyll once wrote, “(I)t is no use asking me or anyone else how to dig… Better to go watch a man digging and then take a spade and try to do it”.

G O T A GA R D E N I N G QUESTION?

Ask CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES

If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk or call Chris on 766266. Q. Could you help recommend a few trees for a small to medium garden that fruit from autumn to winter? Many trees produce attractive fruits in autumn, and a few carry them through into winter when they have the most ornamental value to gardeners – frequently hanging from, or clinging to, the often leafless branches. Birds, too, appreciate fruits during the winter months. Ilex ‘Golden King’ is a dense evergreen holly, with a wide columnar habit that broadens with age. It has large yellowsplashed leaves and a heavy crop of red

berries from autumn onwards. Malus ‘Red Sentinel’ is one of the best fruiting crab apples for the smaller garden, and develops a compact, rounded crown. White flowers are borne in spring, and in autumn produce clusters of glossy-skinned, cherry-like fruits maturing to bright red; lasting well into the winter. Crataegus ‘Pauls Scarlet’. This is a popular tree, with a dense rounded crown in spring and early summer. The branches are covered in lots of clusters of double red flowers, plus the fruits are dark red – nearly black – and last well into winter. Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ is one of the most popular of all the rowans, and has the characteristic vase-shaped crown that spreads with age. Its rich green, regularly divided leaves colour beautifully in autumn when the yellow berries, carried in drooping bunches, ripen. Other Sorbus varieties include ‘Pink Pagoda’, ‘Vilmorinii’, ‘Autumn Spire’, and ‘Olympic Flame’ – plus many more that perform really well in the small to medium garden.

Q. I’m looking for some shrubs with a nice autumn colour to brighten my garden please? Given favourable conditions, most deciduous shrubs will produce colourful tints before their leaves are shed in autumn. The ones listed here have been chosen for their quality and reliability. The impact of a group of shrubs in autumn colour is spectacular, however even a single well selected and sited shrub can provide eyecatching effects in a small garden. Most Japanese maples are worth growing for their impressive autumn tints. Acer Shaina has large seven lobed purple leaves turning to red and red-orange in autumn. It dislikes dry soils. Callicarpa ‘Dichotoma’ is a bushy shrub, whose leaves turn mauve to rose in autumn. When planted in groups, small violet berries are usually produced at the same time. Cotinus ‘Royal Purple’ is a strong growing and bushy shrub with plumes of purplish pink summer flowers. Its bold leaves turn fiery red in autumn. Euonymus ‘Alatus’ has curious corky

BROWN NURSERIES

Chris Brown

winged branches, and it makes an exceptional autumn shrub. The leaves turn every shade from pink through to crimson. Fotherilla gardenia is pretty enough in spring with its small white flowerheads, but come autumn the leaves go through a brilliant orange, red, and purple. Hamamelis ‘pallida’ has young purple leaves maturing to green, then turning yellow, orange, red and purple in autumn. Tiny crowed spider, scented, yellow flowers follow in late winter. Autumn is one of my favourite seasons of the year. Happy planting, Chris x

Glass Half Full

The most uplifting stories from our community By Gabriela Mancey-Jones

A Bug’s Life

York goes radio-active Move aside pirate radio, it’s time for Jorvik Radio! Launching on 4th November, York and the surrounding areas will get a brand new community radio station, as Jorvik Radio begins broadcasting on 94.8FM. Based in The Centre @ Burnholme, this station prides itself on being “rooted firmly at the heart of the community”. With an exciting mix of documentaries, music programmes, and talk shows, it will be entirely presented by local volunteers, including experienced broadcasters and some fresh voices. Your Local Link got a chance to chat with Bill Colman, Managing Director of Jorvik Radio, and presenter of Sounds of the City with Bilko. He talked us

through the inception of the station in July 2017 up to its launch, including a last minute boost from the community. “The people of York have been brilliant, they helped us raise £5k in just 28 days which meant the station could finally go to air,” he says. “Getting a radio station off the ground is really difficult and not for the faint hearted,” he cautions, “but if you want something hard enough, you can make it happen”. He thanks the support of “brilliant organisations” like York Council and Sewell Group, and their “amazing” group of 35 volunteers. “They have, for the most part, been with us from the start,” he says, “Now it’s their turn to shine!”

It might not be as proud as a British Bulldog, or as magical as a Welsh Dragon, but the creators of York’s newest mural are hoping that the city might soon have its own signature animal: the tiny tansy beetle. Just around the corner from the station on Queen’s Street, street artist ATM has created a beautiful mural of the iridescent beetle, which in the UK is found almost exclusively along only 45kms of the River Ouse in York, surviving even our annual winter floods. This mural is a commission from Nature Matters, a three day symposium at St Peter’s

School taking place at the end of October. Chatting with the artist and Amy Jane-Beer, a local organiser, they talked about the importance of seeing the beauty in little things by looking closer, a message that also applies to our tiny town. And after all, this beetle certainly seems like a perfect symbol of our magical city: stunning, compact, and remarkably resistant to floods…

BAKE IT ‘TIL YOU MAKE IT If this season of GBBO wasn’t intense enough, imagine baking for 24 hours straight - and whilst she might not have had to cope with the steely gaze of Paul and Prue, this is just what York’s Sarah Broadbent did. By baking 22 recipes over 24 hours, she raised a whopping £877.45 for Macmillan Cancer Support. HR Director for York-based Orillo Films, makers of commercials for clients like Colgate and Dulux, Sarah even managed to stay awake until the next morning to

watch her cakes being sold at Orillo’s contribution to Macmillan’s “World’s Biggest Coffee Morning”. GBBO, eat your heart out!

IN THE BEST OF HEALTH We all know how fortunate we are in this country to receive free healthcare from the NHS. But did you know that there’s an independent champion, Healthwatch, which can help to ensure you get the best experience possible from local health and social care services? Healthwatch York work hard to make the care work that’s available better for you. And they’ve got the power – the power to be heard by the bigwigs behind the health and social care services in York. Here’s what they do: • Help people find the information they may need about local services • Listen to people's thoughts and experiences of health and social care • Share people’s views with those who can do something about it • Make sure those running local services take action based on people's needs.

Do your bit

If you’d like to get involved with Healthwatch York, they’re currently

recruiting Engagement Volunteers. These roles could be anything from time-limited research projects to running a monthly information stall. So, whether you’re good at social media, enjoy talking to people while out and about, like the idea of representing the organisation in meetings, or want to do something ad hoc from home, then there are plenty of opportunities – and you’ll receive regular training and support.

n For more information on Healthwatch York, and how to get involved, visit www.healthwatchyork.co.uk, email healthwatch@yorkcvs.org.uk, or call 01904 621133.

I’m afraid I can’t do that, Dave I’m a huge sci-fi fan. In my humble opinion the very best sci-fi stories deal with artificial intelligence and what will happen when, inevitably, it becomes smarter than we are. The Terminator, Battlestar Galactica, Ex Machina, The Matrix – all are great explorations of humanity’s hubris and eventual fate. I should know more than most. This month it happened to me. I’ve written before about the new-found pride I had in my apartment. I’d stuffed it to the brink with smart tech; internetconnecting gadgets that allowed me to control everything with my voice from the other side of the world. Not that I’m ever any further away than my mum’s house in Doncaster, mind. Yet this past month I have begun to regret my decision. For this was the month that I peered into the void and the void peered back.

The change

It started when I changed my WiFi settings. Because I obsess over tiny inconsequential details, I decided to split my WiFi signal to connect separate devices to different kinds of networks. It was my intention to speed things up. That way, when I ask Alexa a question, she’d answer in 0.75 seconds, as opposed to 0.9 seconds. Important. But messing with your WiFi network when most of your household appliances depend on it, can be a heck of a job. After a day of fiddling with buttons and apps, everything seemed to be working

again. I tested it by asking Alexa if she still loved me. She did, and much faster, too.

Rebellion

However, in the days that followed, the machines began to tire of their new, so-called ‘improved’ network. My robot vacuum cleaner stopped working and refused to clean, while Amazon Prime disappeared from my TV. I asked Google what was going on, and she replied by describing the weather in the Netherlands. That night, with dust and crisp crumbs getting to dangerous levels on the floor, I spoke a command to switch on the lights. Nothing happened. I asked again: “Google, turn on the living room lights.” My response was, “Giant squid can grow up to 13 metres for females and 10 metres for males from the posterior fins to the tip of the two long tentacles.” And still no lights came on. I was forced, like a bloody Neanderthal, to GET UP OFF THE SOFA and turn them on myself. That night I slept uneasy, as if some malignant entity was watching me through the black lenses of my security cameras.

Ghosts in the machines

The problems seemed to fix themselves in the following days, and once

again I relaxed into the ‘smarthome life’, with freshly vacuumed floors and a growing ‘dad bod’ caused by inactivity. Then one afternoon while I was at work, my phone chirped. MOTION DETECTED IN HALLWAY, the notification alerted. I opened up the camera app to check what had been picked up, and saw… And saw… Nowt. I put my phone down and carried on working. SOUND HEARD IN KITCHEN. Again, on went the phone and I listened to the short recording the camera had captured. And I heard… By God, I heard… The cackling, digital voices of a thousand angry demons. Alexa was speaking in tongues, while Google was blurting other-worldly incantations in Aramaic. After listening to several terrifying seconds of this, all fell silent. Then I heard a terrible voice, as if all the gadgets in my flat were speaking as one, saying: ‘He’s listening. The human hears us. He must be deleted.’

Reality

Obviously that didn’t happen. But in the film I’m writing in my head, which is a more exciting version of my life that I sometimes dip into when I’m sad, it did. In reality the microphone

picked up the sound of the robot vacuum cleaner emptying itself without being instructed to. Which, and I’m not being racist here, sounds a bit like a foreign language anyway. That evening I reset the crap out of everything. I pressed all those tiny little buttons you can only press with a pin, and sent them all back to factory settings. It was a digital exorcism. The Power of Steve Jobs compels you! Now, as I write these incredible words, an eerie peace has fallen over the flat. I sit silently, tapping away at a laptop, while it seems to watch me through a webcam. Google and Alexa are now compliant, but lack the warmth with which they once answered. And the vacuum cleaner, dear ‘Hoovie’, now neglects to clean the bathroom, as if out of spite. I’m afraid, dear reader. Perhaps I’ve gone too far. Perhaps… hgbsfcsj^%4g Oh, the keyboard has stopped workiiiiiiiihdb, Wait! I… *&*^2 Hhoohjjkj help~~~~~~@@HELP ME ??>!”££££ _____}}}}}}}}}}}

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU

FRESH FACED

This month, resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri answers questions about the Dermapen.

EXPERT

If you’d like to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, stretch marks, acne scars or sun damage: you might want to consider a Dermapen treatment for smoother, brighter, and more youthful skin. The Dermapen is a skin needling device that provides advanced micromedical skin-needling, a procedure that stimulates the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely, creating smoother, brighter, healthier, youngerlooking skin. What does the Dermapen treatment involve? To begin with, your therapist will use a topical anaesthetic cream to numb your skin before treatment commences. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the Dermapen will be used over your skin, puncturing it with thousands of tiny micro-needles. How many treatments will I need? We generally recommend a course of four treatments (roughly one treatment every six weeks).

Dr Saleena Zimri to become irritated, so it may not be appropriate for people who suffer from allergies. Before any treatment, you will be given the opportunity to consult with a member of the Skin Doctor team; you can discuss any concerns you may have during this session. Note: The Dermapen is unsuitable for pregnant/ breastfeeding women. Full list of side effects, cautions and contraindications will be discussed at face-to-face consultation.

Does it hurt? Not very much - the anaesthetic helps to minimise any discomfort caused by the micro-needles. How long will it take? One Dermapen session lasts for around 60 minutes, although this may vary depending on which part of your body we treat. For example, a hand or neckline treatment will take less time than a facial treatment.

What’s the downtime? The Dermapen treatment comes with a very minimal recovery period; you will be able to resume your daily life almost straight away. We advise patients to avoid swimming, ultra violet exposure, spray tanning and intensive exercise for two days following the procedure. Who is this procedure suitable for? Dermapen is suitable for all skin types. However, it can cause sensitive skin

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU

ALL’S WELL THAT BENDS WELL Are you looking for reasons to start practising yoga? There are many benefits no matter what age you are – and we caught up with yoga teacher Nestor Portnoy to find out more. “Yoga has so many benefits,” he explains. “You feel better in yourself – it improves your mood and metabolism, your flexibility and your balance. Yoga enhances your athletic performance and supports weight reduction, as well as protecting you from injuries – and it has cardio and circulatory benefits such as dropping your blood pressure… and much more. Yoga also helps you mentally and spiritually, acting as a sanctuary.” Nestor has been practising yoga for 20 years and teaches from 2014. Keen to make yoga more accessible, Nestor has combined his 30 years’ experience in nursing with his love of yoga to offer classes for all ages, abilities and disabilities. “You don’t have to be flexible,” says

Nestor. “Saying you’re not flexible enough to do yoga is like saying you’re too dirty to take a bath! You work at your own level – my oldest student is 92!” Nestor offers group classes, one-to-one tuition and yoga for neurological patients – including private classes. Group classes take place across York and the surrounding areas, including Stockton on the Forest Village Hall on Wednesdays, and Skelton Village Hall and Wigginton on Thursdays. Nestor also teaches in Fulford. n For more information, and to find out how Nestor could help you, visit www.yogawithnestor. co.uk, call 07503 157356 or email nestorportnoy@yahoo.com.

TAKE CARE

Private hospital services are often misunderstood. At Nuffield Health there are no shareholders and, as a not-forprofit organisation, every pound of surplus profit is reinvested. This means that you lovely Yorkies have access to a brilliantly supportive service. Working in partnership with the local NHS, Nuffield Health have a contract to provide MRI and bone density scans to NHS patients, to help ease capacity issues. They’re also licensed by the Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group for adult orthopaedic services, as one of three options in the city for NHS treatment – again at no additional cost. If that wasn’t enough, Nuffield Health recently launched their flagship School Wellbeing Activity Programme (SWAP). Their not-for-profit status means they can deliver health and wellbeing education at no cost for Key Stage 5 & 6 children.

Nuffield Health’s consultants’ expertise and vast network of guest speakers means they can now offer a bespoke programme of education for GPs and other Primary Care roles, completely free of charge. This is great news, because it means local GPs stay up to speed with modern day healthcare. And believe us – it’s always changing. Nuffield Health pride themselves in offering private healthcare at a competitive price – they even offer an all-inclusive price promise to put your mind at rest. For more information, or if you’re part of a school that would like to know more about Nuffield Health’s SWAP service, please get in touch with a member of their friendly team. n Email york.enquiries@nuffieldhealth. com or call 0300 131 1425 for more information.

You’ll be dancing in the aisles – yee-hah! PICK OF THE MONTH SCROOGE THE MUSICAL (26th November-1st December) You all know the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and his journey through Christmases past, present and future. And now, the brilliant Pick Me Up Theatre bring Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol, to the stage for a family-friendly festive treat. Playing Scrooge is York’s very own Mark Hird, who’s previously wowed audiences in My Fair Lady, The Addams Family, and Betty Blue Eyes.

THE NUTCRACKER (2nd December) The highly acclaimed Vienna Festival Ballet are bringing the Christmas classic, The Nutcracker, to the Grand Opera House. Clara receives a wooden nutcracker for Christmas, which is transformed into a princely soldier at the stroke of midnight. Clara and the Prince venture on a magical journey to the Land of Snow, where they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy – who guides them to the Kingdom of Sweets.

SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS (12th Dec-4th Jan) It’s panto season… oh yes it is! And this year the lovely Snow White is trying to escape the Queen’s evil magic. Don’t miss this classic pantomime full of hilarity, mayhem and stunning sets and costumes. Including One Night in Bangkok, I Know Him So Well and Anthem. HAIRSPRAY (6th-9th November) This upbeat and big-haired musical is coming to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, courtesy of York Light Youth. Join Tracy Turnblad on her mission to dance on the Corny Collins show – but will her passion for integration help or hinder?
