Can we just say a massive congratulations to you? Yes, you. You made it through September. You survived the mad back-to-school rush. You put away the summer dresses and shorts, and begrudgingly pulled out the jackets and umbrellas (although they won’t have been too far away, this is Britain after all). So let’s just take a minute to celebrate YOU.
coming up with some pumpkin designs and get your little ones’ costumes put together – because the Trick or Treat season is upon us. And you know what that means. IT’S NEARLY CHRISTMA--- no, you’re right, sorry; it’s still too soon for that.
We at the Your Local Link offices, on the other hand, are loving the change of season. No, not because X Factor and Strictly are back on the box (although this is far from a negative thing), but because there are some bloomin’ good events going on in our lovely City of York over autumn. Don’t believe us? Flick through to our events pages and see for yourself.
For all you lovely people reading this with green fingers, turn to our gardening section and discover how to prepare your foliage for the frost. And if you’d rather stay inside and snuggle

YORK LIFE
AND LIFE IN GENERAL boots, which might come in handy at Christmas time.
As I look around at the piles of books and boxes, I realise there is nothing for it. I have to embark on a serious decluttering mission. Or that’s what my friend Rebecca tells me, when she comes for lunch armed with a roll of heavy-duty bin-bags. CDs? She says. Nobody listens to CDs any more (even though I do, or I would if my CD player weren’t buried somewhere among the clutter). Nobody needs five copies of the same piece of sheet music. Do I really need to keep every picture the children have ever drawn? I submit. And while I refuse to budge on the books - a Kindle is definitely not the same - I eventually accept that she might have a point when I see how clear and clutter-free my sitting room looks. No ancient invitations and tickets on the chimney-piece; no hair bobbles roosting on the door-handles; paperwork in the bureau rather than occupying any random surface; records dispatched to Vinyl Eddie; old
lampshades deposited at St Leonard’s. “See: you can do it,” Rebecca says. “In fact, you can do it with the rest of the house, now you have seen how easy it is.” Ho hum. She is, of course, absolutely right, I think, as I wander upstairs. I am greeted by a mountain of boxes, still not unpacked despite two house moves. A bin-bag seems a challenge too far, but I manage to fill a carrier bag with items for St Leonard’s. So far, so good. This particular activity also means I can get rid of one of the 3,000 or so Bags for Life currently blocking access to the freezer (itself a treasure-trove of frozen clutter). Full of decluttering zeal, I return to St Leonard’s and donate my modest haul. But then a pair of curtains catches my eye. They might just be perfect for my sitting room. And there are some wine glasses which would be excellent for when mine get broken. Not to mention more books, and a pair of red
While I’m in the Bishopthorpe Road vicinity, I might as well visit Age UK. Here I buy a decorative jug and a suitcase, in case I can’t find mine. Never mind decluttering: recluttering is evidently my forte. It’s all very well, getting rid of things but to my mind, it simply increases the amount of space available to introduce new clutter (for want of a better word). This is different from hoarding. I happily chuck old newspapers out, and have no interest in keeping jam jars. Well, I might keep jam jars, but they represent jam-making possibilities, and therefore absolutely don’t fall into the ‘clutter’ or ‘hoarding’ category. And where better to reclutter than Wombells Auction House? After all, everyone needs a crumb-scoop and some grape scissors. Not to mention a corner cupboard (when you have no spare corners), a mahogany tea-caddy, a non-working old black telephone (which will work one day, when I get round to finding someone who can fix it), and four banana boxes containing “a

quantity of linen”. Minimalist living has nothing on a bathroom full of rugs and an important collection of Coronation mugs. Once you get the recluttering bug, it’s impossible not to spy must-have items everywhere. Skips are of great interest (to an awful lot of people, to judging by the crowd inspecting the one parked outside the Dean Court Hotel last week). I have never, yet, gone in for skip-diving, but I can entirely see the appeal. As for Hazel Court (i.e. the Tip): it’s a reclutterer’s Paradise. Endless cars filled with possibilities. Chairs, tables, fridges… it takes all my will-power not to offer to relieve my fellow Tip-goers of their clutter. After all, another broken television might make the perfect companion for my existing two. Of course, I really ought to overcome my recluttering tendencies. But I’ll think about that once I’ve had a quick trawl round the charity shops of Goodramgate.

JOIN THE CLUB IN THE PINK Sadly, most of us will have been affected by cancer in some way. Breast cancer in particular is the most common form in women, with around 54,900 new cases each year in the UK. However, survival rates have doubled over the last 40 years in the UK – and are continuing to improve. Charities like Breast Cancer Now are partly to thank for that. They believe that “if we all act now, by 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live”. Think Pink, a York group who raise funds for Breast Cancer Now are doing just that – acting now. And you too can act now, as they’re looking for volunteers to join them in their efforts. Their previous events include Zumba parties, stalls and tombolas, and a pink weekend over York’s nightlife – they even joined in the fun at the Tour de France! n If you want to join this fantastic group and help make a difference, contact Shân Potts at shanpotts@hotmail.com for more information.
PARK LIFE Friends of Leeman Park are a group of volunteers from York, whose aim is to improve Leeman Park, Back Park and the rest of the neighbourhood. The team’s fantastic efforts include creating a community orchard with a whopping 22 different types of fruit and nuts, adding a nature reserve to the top of Balfour Street and Stephenson Way, and general improvements such as graffiti removal and litter picking. They even arranged a mass clear up following the flooding in 2016. If you fancy doing your bit for the area and want to volunteer, then the Friends of Leeman Park would love to hear from you. n Visit www.leemanpark.uk or call 01904 393531 for more information.
Head over to www.yourlocallink.co.uk for dozens of other great local clubs to join.

RED NOSE SLEIGH No, we’re not talking about Comic Relief. We’re actually talking about Christmas (yes, really). If you’re anything like us here in the Your Local Link offices, you’ll agree that it isn’t officially the Christmas season until you’ve seen the Minster Lions’ famous Rocking Rudolph sleigh, complete with Santa, bringing magic and joy to the children of York. Well, how would you like to be a part of that magic? The Minster Lions are looking for volunteers who would like to join them (and Santa) in collecting donations. If you love Christmas and want to make a real difference, get involved! n Email info@Minsterlions.org.uk or call 01904 890144 to get involved. You must be over 16.
DANCE WITHOUT LIMITS No one should be denied the right to express themselves. If you have a disability that makes you feel like you can’t join a dance class, then think again! Dance for Parkinsons is a weekly class for people with Parkinsons, or any other disability, that are keen to get moving and meet new people. You’ll learn new moves, bop along to some great music and, of course, have fun. And it’s not just about getting your boogie on. Once you’ve been put through your paces you’ll be able to have a cuppa and a natter with the rest of the group. n So, get yourself down to Wigginton Recreational Hall at 10.3011.30am every Friday to get in on the action. For more information, give Sylvia a call on 01904 490987.
THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING It’s fair to say that we live in a beautiful part of the country. With the picturesque North Yorkshire Moors on our doorstep and hundreds of landmark spots to take your camera, it would surely be rude not to venture into the great outdoors and make the most of it. Walking group The Ramblers are doing just this. They meet regularly – usually several times a week – and venture out on walks of various lengths, and you’re invited to join! n If you’re keen to get more exercise, meet new people and see more of our stunning countryside, visit www.yorkramblers.org.uk and find a walk that suits you.

LIBRA
23RD SEPT22ND OCT
This will be a fortuitous period for launching new relationships and gaining greater depth of meaning and commitment within the framework of existing unions. It’s much easier to get what you want out of life when you and your partner are working towards a common goal, and this energy seems to gather strength throughout October with every passing day. Job and career aspects might be a bit stop-and-start, and certain plans may need to be postponed for a short time. Better to put something off and get it right first time, than to act in haste and regret it afterwards. Anything to do with
SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV
Some people might say that you’re being impulsive. You’re not – ignore them! You’ve thought long and hard about your options, and are now taking action. Just because you haven’t confided your plans to others doesn’t mean you haven’t thought them through carefully. You have!

building works, home extensions and property improvement could well become relevant, but it’s probably not a good idea to try doing things on the cheap, or with an unrealistic budget. Younger Librans will feel the weight of parental pressure and authority, while older members of the sign may feel that younger people around them have completely lost the plot! Some Librans will find themselves being drawn into the world of politics: party politics, office politics, bedroom politics, and anything else that takes your fancy, including protest groups and council committees.
SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV-21ST DEC CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN There should be some pick up in your social life throughout October and there’ll be a pattern of meeting up with old friends that you haven’t seen in a while. Nights out in restaurants or stopovers in hotels may put some strain on your finances, but you’ll be getting something back for your money. This is an exciting time for new romance and refreshed commitment.

October should pass quite quickly and smoothly. New household routines bring pleasure to some and frustration to others, while parents may have to intervene in the case of squabbling siblings. There’ll be some gentle pressure upon you to do something you’ve been putting off doing all year. Make a will, read a book, climb a mountain!
AQUARIUS 20TH JAN - 18TH FEB
Instead of waiting for someone (or something) to come to you, maybe you should make the first move. This should bring surprising and successful results, and your mood during the second half of the month will be significantly brighter than during the first couple of weeks. The 17th to the 24th will be a positive period for new doors opening.

Quite an easy going month, and a productive one for anyone involved in any aspect of the arts. Good communications with other people resolve problems and misunderstandings, and there will be some bright social events around the 9th and 10th and again on the 24th. Any money spent on self-image is a good investment.
ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR
A routine month in many respects, without many highs or lows. Excitement can be found in the little things – like a night at the cinema, or dinner with friends. Work regimes are steady and predictable (which might not be a bad thing) and relationships seem stable. While you probably won’t be jumping for joy, you will be aware of the fact that things could be a whole lot worse.
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
October is never an easy month for the Bulls. Summer and autumn have gone, and now you’ve got to face another long winter! Taureans who can make themselves busy, even if it’s only by working for work’s own sake, do better than those who sit there doing nothing. The good news is that there is stability and predictability. Diet is probably a key factor in any health issues.
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
October promises to be quite gentle, and will drift by without major incident. Any niggles will probably revolve around parent and child relationships, and Gemini grandparents will need to bite their tongues on more than one occasion. The pace of life picks up during the last few days when there will be a boost to your social life.

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
Quite a busy month on the social scene, with a steady combination of business and pleasure. Cancerian careerists will benefit from doing a bit of PR and networking, and single members of the sign should find themselves receiving compliments and flirtations – which will help open the doors of opportunity (if you’re looking for something more than this).
LEO 22ND JUL - 21ST AUG
An argument with a friend or colleague during the first week of the month leaves a sour taste in your mouth, but it also puts you in a very determined mood to prove a few things to your critics and score some points in the process. October is an active (and in some ways aggressive) month, during which you’ll score a number of important goals, especially around the 16th, 17th and 18th.

YORK LIFE
l e v a r T e m Ti Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing.
THIS MONTH: ST PETER’S SCHOOL First of all, if you are, or ever have been, a pupil of St Peter’s School… ooo, get posho ‘ere! Where’s your gold-plated limo, m’lord or m’lady? Ooo! Right, now that that’s out of our system, we can start to take a look at a really fascinating institution with a history that stretches so much further back than the school’s current home in Clifton. Back so far that the school proudly boasts being the fourth oldest school IN THE WORLD! What?
SAINTLY BEGINNINGS There aren’t many schools that can claim to have been founded by a saint – certainly not the local comprehensive you might have attended. But St Peter’s can, having been started by St Paulinus in 627CE. He was the chap who Edwin, King of Northumbria, called from Rome to baptise him (so he could marry a hot
Christian lady) in the newly constructed York Minster. Paulinus did so and set to establishing a school on the same site as the, then small and hut-like, Minster.
The school continued happily, and by the early 700s possessed a library of books that attracted international attention. Unfortunately, this time period wasn’t overly stable, and both the school and the Minster were burnt down on several occasions. Still, in 778 the position of Headmaster was filled by the Northumbrian scholar Alcuin, or Flaccus Albinus Alcuinus if you want to get fancy. To be honest, we could write an entire article about Alcuin, but for now we’ll simply point out that he was great, extremely clever, was sent to Rome to have York recognised as an Archbishopric, and on his way home met Charlamagne, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and became his tutor.
LESSONS LEARNT Subjects at this time included Latin, rhetoric, logic, grammar, geometry, arithmetic, natural history, astronomy and something amazing called ‘timereckoning’. Notably lacking from the curriculum was home economics, make-up design, and film studies, but you can’t have everything. From St Peter’s School website: “In 1066, the year of the Norman Conquest, the city of York was sacked. William I appointed Thomas of Bayeux as Archbishop and the School flourished.”
Oh well, that’s okay, then! It’s nice to know that something good came from the widescale slaughter of the citizens of York. We jest, but under Norman rule the school grew, taking on more pupils (still only boys, mind), and using the newly built nave of the Norman Minster – the first version of the one we have today. Times were a-changing, though, and by the 13th century the school moved to a building outside of the Minster, just beyond the east-end. The site was also split, with some pupils based there, and many more using a site within the grounds of St Mary’s abbey, now the Museum Gardens. There the school remained until 1557, when new buildings were constructed on the Horsefair, just beyond Gillygate.

Unfortunately, the Horsefair buildings were destroyed in 1644 during the Siege of York, so the boys were brought back within the walls to take up home in Bedern in a site formally used by the Minster’s clergy. One former pupil of this version of the school went on to be Poet Laureate, no less, and the youngest ever at just 30. However, the accolade is slightly soured by the fact that Lawrence Eusden, bless
him, is considered to be one of the worst Poet Laureates ever. Oh well. The next chapter in St Peter’s School’s history is somewhat bleak, as it was moved yet again in 1730 to a Turkish bath house off Coney Street, and then to the decrepit St Andrew’s Church. It remained there until 1828 and had only 20 pupils.
YORK LIFE
REMEMBER, REMEMBER… It was here that the school’s most famous pupil attended. Guy Fawkes, as well as co-conspirators John and Christopher Wright, went on to achieve some infamy by attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Again, St Peter’s can boast away; an entire day of the year is named after a former pupil of theirs. Incidentally, the Gunpowder Plot connection continues, as the current school in Clifton sits on land formally owned by the Fawkes family.
GROWTH Things improved, however; first with the appointment of Head Master Stephen Creyke who turned things around, increasing the number of boys, and then in 1844 when the school joined with Clifton Proprietary School, taking up residence in the current grand buildings. There the school has remained since, absorbing the likes of St Olave’s Prep School to grow further still, and offer education to a wider range of ages… but not to girls. No, that milestone wasn’t crossed until 1976 with the admission of seven girls to the Sixth Form, and the rest of the school wasn’t fully co-ed until 1986. Other notable alumni include Joseph Terry, of Chocolate Orange fame, TV’s Harry Gration, Bond music composer John Barry, and cricketer Jonny Bairstow, to name but a few. So, a long history, but uniquely one that is still being added to today. Classic York.

Treasure Hunt
taking stock
For our Treasure Hunting delights this month we’re taking a long straight walk through Stockton-on-the-Forest. Come on...
How many points do you get on a Tuesday?
1.
We start by friends of the magazine, Dean’s Garden Centre, on Stockton Lane, looking up the road toward the village proper.
At what time is the coach house clock permanently stuck?
Retreat back to The Village and continue onwards. After a while...
5.
22 22
Moving along the lane, what colour is the horn? Why must you be cautious of your erections in the Bull Commercial Centre?
4.
Moving on again (told you it was a long straight walk), chuck a left into the grounds of Stockton Hall Hospital. You can take a look at the grand old hall in all its majesty, but...
Who should you call to book Stockton Village Hall? For what occasion did Dean’s Garden Centre donate a bench?
6.
Continue along the road. Just before you pass the village sign...
2.
Who donated the bench?
What numbers of buses service the village? What is the surgery part of? In your sensible, grown-up opinion, what is the name of the funniest street that Kingsmoor Road leads to?
3. Moving on – as you approach the turn off for Kingsmoor Road...
Further along the road... It looks like someone’s drive, but what is the name of the weird little public footpath?

Turn right and head up the path to Holy Trinity Church’s grave yard. Yeah, you know what time it is: READING HEADSTONES!
In what year did Mary Ratcliffe die? Who is buried “betwixt her two husbands”? Who was a “sinner saved by grace”?
Other than fine ales and wine, what else does The Fox Inn promise?
Head back to The Village and continue onwards.
9.
At Jacksons Roofing, to where must all customers report? Keeping your peepers peeled for a blue plaque... in which year was Susanna Wilkinson born?
Right, well done, trekkers. Either turn around and head back to York, or keeping on wandering! Until next month... XOXO

THE KINGPIN O N YO U R LOC A L T O WN FACEB O O K G RO U P
Hey guys, it’s ya girl K, feeling super refreshed after a week off in sunny Mallorca. I’ve mostly been lounging by the pool, staring out to sea and eating all my favourite beige foods on repeat. Oh, and spending an unhealthy amount of time on social media. Having discovered the joys of daytime internet browsing I would like to give you one very important piece of advice: Regardless of where you live, join your local community Facebook page. Having recently become what some might describe an expert, I’ve composed a comprehensive list of power moves you can use to make it all the way to the top. People will shiver when they see your name pop up.
Picture it: You. The greatest community Facebook group member OF ALL TIME.
1.

Ignite a witch hunt This is the ultimate power move. If you can do this, you can basically do anything. If you see a group of youths on bikes down by the park (which is probably, I don’t know, the ideal place to hang out on a bike if you’re actually a kid?). Best thing to do, post a blurry picture of them you took while casually walking past and then post on Your Town Facebook Group with the caption: Anyone seen these guys? Looked like they were up to no good if you ask me. You can then watch the accusations roll in: ‘Someone left a tab end on my drive!’ ‘I heard them laughing at 10pm - disgusting’. Next up place your call to action in the comments: We need to do something about this - what do you reckon guys? Shall we go down there and give them a
piece of our minds? Contact the police? Start a poll. You are now officially the boss of Facebook.
3.
Know about all power cuts and road works Be the first to know about any minor or major inconveniences at all times. Keep an eye on the Highways England website so that you can instantly let your community know which roads will be closed. Some particularly misguided informants might like to let you know when there’s a speed gun somewhere, too. Undeniably helpful, but I don’t think I want to get into the legalities of that one.
4.
Remain vigilant Posting open warnings to fellow community members is a power move. If you’ve got time, find a quirky poster off of the internet that you definitely don’t have the copyright for and post it with a polite reminder. Example: To the person that thinks it’s OK to let their dog mess and not pick it up outside my parents house on A Certain Road. Poster: Polite notice, your dog did his duty… now do yours.
5.
Ask blindly for advice Looking for a good restaurant nearby? Don’t use Tripadvisor, ask your Facebook community and watch them fall over themselves to help you. Does anyone know what time Tesco is open until today? I can guarantee you that unless a member actually works there, someone had to google the answer to that questions themselves before they told you. Power is nigh. You’re in charge. *Advice to be taken with a pinch of salt. The author accepts no responsibility for consequences as a result of following this advice. **Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.

LEEDS FESTIVAL It fell just after our last deadline so I’m a little late to the party - but the festival next door proves time and again that it can move with the times and keep it relevant always. From Post Malone (the best solo artist of the last 10 years, don’t @ me) to Blinders on BBC introducing, it hits every genre, with high quality under the radar and top of the line artists. A little bit of sunshine goes a long way, too. Bring on next year.

At the time of my last column in September, Martin Gray was punching the air after a York City took a rousing victory over promotion favourites Stockport County. Now, at time of writing, the same Martin Gray has collected his P45 and Stockport are comfortably mid-table – and possibly not the side we thought they were. After the disappointing away trip to Chorley on the opening day, I recently did what has to be one of the longest treks in National League North when going to Hereford. A league that’s meant to be regional somehow
30
involves a three-anda-half-hour journey. It was a refreshing change to visit a club with a bit of history and professionalism – or so I thought. At the entrance, there were two clear doorways: one for seating, and one for standing. Both came out at the same place! So with the sun shining and pie in hand, it’s times like these that the Minstermen let you down. But a decent enough performance secured a 1-1 draw under the tutelage of caretaker boss Sam Collins. A hardy 196 souls made the journey – would you believe some people do this every week! One supporter was
saying his girlfriend had left him because he was too obsessed with York City. He was gutted as they’d been together for three seasons.
BAD LOSERS Football affects people in different ways. Republic of Ireland fans, after losing 4-1 to Wales in the Nations League (a competition that no one seems to
understand the format of), claimed they hadn’t been that embarrassed since Jedward represented their country in Eurovision. At least they accept their dismal performance – unlike Jose Mourinho, who, after getting beaten 3-0 at home to Tottenham, said the three from 3-0 also represented how many Premier League titles he’s won, and he deserves more respect. He kind of lost my respect when he gouged Tito Vilanova’s eye out in 2011. Interesting tactic from the selfproclaimed ‘Special One’ to respond to his work failings by pointing out how well he’s done at a previous club. Not sure many people would follow suit in the real world and say: “Sorry I’ve been rubbish recently, but I was amazing at my last job”.

JR FIGHTING TALK Onto boxing now and Amir Khan seems to be doing his level best to avoid Sheffield’s former World Champion, Kell Brook. I had the pleasure of interviewing Brook for Your Local Link a couple of years back and saw first-hand how frustrating he was finding it for that super fight not to be made. Unfortunately, it seems no closer – despite it being the fight that Britain really wants to see. After just scraping by in his last match, Khan took to the mic and asked the crowd who wants to see him and Manny Pacquiao get it on. Which was as well received as Roxanne Pallett on Celebrity Big Brother. Local boxing now and last month we told you about York’s newest professional boxer, light heavyweight prospect Michael Fafera, preparing for
his professional boxing debut. Despite a late switch in venue, Fafera, trained by Steve Melton, successfully won his first bout at Elland Road Banqueting Suite, Leeds, on a Mark Bateson promotion. His opponent, Zac Thompson of Newark, retired in his corner at the end of Round One. Manager Glenn Banks said: “Fafera was always in control of the one-sided contest. He found his range, distance and timing quickly, and put his shots together well.” Fafera’s opponent, Thompson, was completely outgunned – and towards the end of the first round he had nose and eye damage. Michael Fafera would like to thank the large and vocal York support, which is always appreciated.

Grahame Wimborne has been in the motor trade for 19 years, seven of those years have been in commercial vehicles. We guess you could say that what he doesn’t know about vans, isn’t worth knowing. He’s now in his third month at SG Petch Fiat Commercials. Making sure businesses, whether they’re one man bands or larger companies looking for fleet deals, get the right vehicles for the job is something Grahame prides himself on: “Customers look for affordability, reliability, payloads (how much the vehicle can carry) and what we can provide with after sales. We don’t forget that they have to rely on the vans to get

them to their next job and can’t afford for them to be off road for any length of time.”
“In order to make sure we get the right van for them, I go through the whole range with them and narrow it down to the model that suits their business best.” There are plenty of options for local businesses when it comes to a new van. SG Petch offer new and used commercial vehicles. Finance options are available too, whether it’s buying a van outright or choosing a lease deal, you can drop in between 8.30am-6pm, Monday - Friday and weekends by appointment only.
Grahame understands that after sales is just as important as lining someone up with their ideal vehicle in the first place: “After sales is important

The triple-decker
No, we're not talking about the Night Bus from Harry Potter, nor are we enthusing greatly about a pretty obvious improvement to one of our favourite chocolate bars. No, we're talking about roundabout in North Tynside on a road you might use a lot. Traditionally the A19 becomes jammed when running though the roundabout by the A1059, and drivers – even those carrying straight on – often have to queue. However, thanks to a new bit of road-making set to be completed soon, motorists will be able to power on through a new tunnel under the runabout. The triple-decker system is pretty impressive and begs the question: why not just dig tunnels under all roundabouts for those of us going straight? Mind blown.
Japan pushing for flying cars by 2020 If there is one country in the world that can be relied upon to do something weird, it's Japan. Fret ye not, dear readers; we're not talking about giant mutant lizards, grown women dressed as school girls, or really violent and oddly sexual animation. No, we mean flying cars. While the likes of the US and China have been busily working away on getting a working flying car on the roads (and in the skies) Japan feels like it's been left behind – until now. After forming a special organisation with AirBus, Uber, Boeing and other companies working on flying transport, Japan is determined to get a working vehicle in the air in times for the Olympic Games in 2020. That time pressure, they hope, will spur the nation on to becoming the world's first to offer unmanned air travel. Watch this space.
GADGETGUIDE Tech begins at home
Remember not that long ago when we’d all have a laugh about how technology was one day going to be so advanced that it’d gradually take over our homes? Well we’re not laughing now – because Loxone Smart Homes are a thing. And they’re bloomin’ brilliant. Turning your home into a Smart Home means all the systems and devices in your house will be co-ordinated to work around you. So, if you’re asleep, you’ll be alerted to any intruders or dangers, such as fire, while lighting a path to safety. Your blinds will automatically open when it’s time to wake up (because there’s no better alarm than natural sunlight). And your intercom will show you live images of who’s ringing your doorbell. n Visit www. loxone.com and dive into the world of Loxone Smart Homes. Or dive into a physical pool, because they do those, too.

Think about the future…
By Mel Collier, Bathroom Planning and Design Consultant at JDL
We’ve spoken previously about futureproofing your bathroom for older age – ensuring the items you spend your hard-earned money on won’t need changing or adapting as you reach your twilight years. However, how many people think about the future of the product itself? Here at JDL, the products we install in your bathrooms come from reputable suppliers within the local area. They’ve been in business a long time – and we know they’ll be still be in business in years to come. So we know we can help you if anything unforeseen happens with your bathroom. We also always supply branded bathroom products. A lot of them come with a manufacturer guarantee – which means should anything go wrong with your products, as long as you’ve registered them, you can ring the manufacturer directly and get a specialist engineer to your door normally within 48 hours.
The only issue is that you’ll pay more for branded products over nonbranded products – but I really believe it’s more than worth it for peace of mind! Also, don’t forget that by using JDL you’re using a company covered by the Which? Trusted Trader Guarantee, and a member of several other regulated bodies that offer their own warranty. We’ll go through all of these guarantees with you and decide what’s best. All I ask of you is if you’re thinking of undertaking any work in the near future, please do your homework and choose a trader who can offer you peace of mind in the future and products you can trust.
Take the stress out of choosing your new bathroom: Call Mel on 01904 608350 or email enquiries@jdl.co.uk.

BITTERSWEET HIGH STREET To say that the UK high street is suffering could be the understatement of the year. I’m sure many of you are aware of the struggle that some large chain stores are having when it comes to selling electrical products – with House of Fraser closing stores and even our friends over at John Lewis reporting a reduction in profits of 99%. But, while that’s obviously a concern for the shareholders and work colleagues of those businesses, if you’re in the market for a new appliance or television now it means there are some amazing bargains to be had, as manufacturers and retailers fall over themselves to attract your custom. If I look across our store here at Monks Cross, there are offers as far as the eye can see. With price reductions, free five-year warranties, interest free credit, free recycling, cashback, free grocery cards – and even the offer of a free Xbox One X. Phew! So, depending on what type of product you’re after,
ASK THE EXPERT MATT TODD
there’s potentially hundreds of pounds to be saved. I can honestly say that in my twenty-plus years of retailing, I’ve never seen such a high number and value of offers available. And of course, you’ll always get expert advice and great customer service.
PREPARATION INSPIRATION On the 29th of September we’re hosting AEG’s live taste event to our Monks Cross showroom – and we would love to see you there. They’ll be showcasing their built-in ovens and hobs, and there will be fresh food, and fresh ideas, for your kitchen throughout the day. If that wasn’t enough, we’re also offering 10% off all AEG products, exclusive five-year warranties, and up to £150 cashback on selected products. Pop in for food inspiration and a tasty bite to eat – on us! If you can’t make the event, but you’re interested in an AEG product for your home, then don’t worry – the offers are on for the following two weeks.

BRAMBLE ON It surprises me how few gardeners grow brambles. Of course, by this I mean cultivated ones, not the wild type that will easily invade a neglected garden or allotment and turn it into an impenetrable tangle! Perhaps it’s because brambles are so common and have a thuggish reputation that they are not the average gardener’s choice. It may also be that some people still like to go ‘brambling’ and get their berries for free – and therefore see no need to grow the cultivated blackberry.
GO GREEN FOR AUTUMN The leaves might be brown, but the lovely people at the Poppleton Community Railway Nursery are keen to keep your fingers green.
EXPERT
Tony Chalcraft With all this said, a little management is required to prevent them forming a thorny thicket. The best way to grow them is on a post and wire framework, training the straggly canes along the wires. To regulate the number of canes and keep the plants healthy, I prune out all the older canes, which fruited in the summer, at the base in autumn or early winter. The young canes, which grew in summer and will carry fruit next year, are then attached to the wires to replace those removed.
The humble bramble has many attributes that make it ideal for your garden. It’s probably the most pest and disease-free of all the garden berries and will thrive in most soils and conditions – even shady spots. Although rarely endorsed by celebrity chefs or featured in healthy eating recipes, brambles can be considered a ‘superfood’. Eaten fresh they’re high in vitamin C, are considered an antioxidant, and provide good dietary fibre. And they’re versatile – as well as making all manner of desserts they also make one of the tastiest jams: bramble jelly.
Britain’s last surviving Railway Nursery is hosting an Open Day on Saturday 6th October between 10am-3pm, as well as a morning sale on Saturday 13th October between 10am-1pm. You’ll be able to explore the Railway Nursery and Narrow Gauge Railway, and buy new additions for your garden, including perennials, herbs, alpines and shrubs.
Young brambles are readily available in garden centres or online, usually sold in pots. They may seem a bit pricey but it’s worth remembering that, once established, most brambles will crop for years.
CANE REACTION
BETTER THE DEVIL YOU GROW
Despite the dry weather, we’ve seen an excellent crop of luscious, juicy berries this year. I’ve got a number of different types that fruit until late September, such as the prickly-stemmed Himalayan Giant, the smaller-berried Ashton Cross (which is one of the tastiest with a wild bramble tang), and Fantasia and Black Satin – both of which give large and juicy berries carried on thorn-free canes.

As for the fruit, it’s now time to stop picking. According to country lore, the devil spits on the berries at Michaelmas (29th September). After which, misfortune will befall those who eat them. As is often the case, old superstition is part rooted in reality. By late September berries decline in quality and can become covered in white mildew or ‘devil’s spit’. They’re then best left for the birds. Strangely, in my garden at least, birds show only a passing interest in the berries when they’re at their ripest and juiciest. This means brambles are one of the few berries that can usually be grown without netting – yet another good reason for giving them a go.

YOUR HOME & GARDEN
This month at
St Nicks
It’s common knowledge that many plants have health benefits, not least that all plants take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen that we all need in order to breathe. But did you know that there are lots of houseplants which are excellent at cleaning and purifying the air? While we can all enjoy the fresh air of the great outdoors, spending hours nurturing our own gardens, the majority of us spend most of our time indoors. And whether we’re at home or in a work environment, many of us only have one or two houseplants and often don’t even consider that there may be health benefits to having more – such as reduced stress levels, improvement to mental health, better sleep and even faster recovery from the common cold and other minor ailments. In reality, our homes can hold quite a bit of air pollution and often fall below the recommended humidity levels due to more efficient heating and decreased air circulation. This then results in more allergens and conditions such as asthma, headaches, sore throats and those dreaded tickly coughs.
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR BREATHING SPACE In 1989, NASA conducted a study on tropical houseplants as a way of cleaning the air in space stations. What they found was that many of the plants removed toxins such as harmful benzene, formaldehyde, xylene and ammonia, many of which can be found in products such as household sprays, aerosols, furniture cleaners, detergents, paints and glues. Although the research is almost 30 years old, the results are still regarded as the most accurate to date. Some houseplants known to improve air quality indoors include: Boston Fern (Nephrolepsis exaltata); Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum); Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina) and Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) – to name but a few. For best results, it’s recommended that at least one plant is placed in 100 square feet (approximately nine square meters) of indoor space.

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask
CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
Q.
My soil is heavy clay – what can I do to improve the quality?
Clay soil can be okay, as long as you plant things that can tolerate heavy soil. The main problem with clay soil is the lack of draining, but don’t worry, there are a number of ways to get around this. Now is the perfect time to use a clay breaker powder, or lime or mushroom compost, so it has time to neutralise, break down the clay, and work over winter. All of these can alter the pH of the soil, so by putting them on now you can prepare and lighten the soil for spring planting. Loose multi-purpose compost can also work short term, but can absorb the clay quickly and cause the ground to become stiff and waterlogged again. Alternatively, you can plant clayappropriate plants such as winter flowering mahonia, hydrangeas, viburnums, amelanchier, berberis, bergenia, hellebores, and solidago. Lots of plants like clay soil and we can always assist and show you more options if you want advice. Ultimately, having clay soil isn’t the end of the world – loosening it and planting accordingly can add joy to your garden

Q.
The beautiful shades of summer are fading and winter’s approaching. What can I do to add colour to my garden now?
As the fuschias flag and the petunias wilt down, it’s time to think about adding more winter colour to the garden. Our winter baskets contain a mixture of evergreen herbs and shrubs as well as pansies, violas, bellis and cyclamen. Using a combination like this ensures that, even between flowerings, there’s something bright and colourful throughout the colder months. Other plants that can add great colour this season are: Heathers: Fine, tall clumps of little pink, white, lilac or red flowers – great for texture and colour. Heucheras: An all-round great evergreen perennial with a wide range of colour options for gardens and pots. Pieris: An ericaceous shrub with green leaves – new shoots come out fiery red. Hellebores: Wide range of colours including white, pink, green, red and black.
They’re just a few of our favourites – why not experiment and try something new for your garden this autumn and winter?
Q.
I’d like to plant different coloured foliage and flowering plants in window boxes and hanging baskets – that will withstand the winter! Do you have any advice? Firstly, change your compost. All the plant food that was in the soil will have been used up by now. A tall plant in the centre of your planter would work well, or a dwarf conifer such as cupressus goldcrest, chamaecyparis, or skimmia.
BROWN NURSERIES
Chris Brown If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. or call Chris on 766266. The next plants should be positioned in triangles, from the centre outwards, and should be lower in height to the centre plant. Small shrubs look nice, like choisya, red edge and greenglobe; and the various leaf colours of sage can suit, too. Trailing plants soften the edges of planters, boxes and baskets – try hedera (ivy). Oregano and thyme are beautiful, too (and they smell gorgeous!). Not forgetting veronica, which has stunning blue flowers that bloom in the late winter. And if it’s colour you’re looking for, try winter-flowering pansies, violas, and primroses. A colourful planter can add even more vibrancy – have a go at some different combinations and have fun!

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.
FOX HUNTING Recently my baby turned six months old. I haven’t really mentioned the wee ginger sprog since he popped out earlier in the year, mainly because I truly believe that babies are pretty dull. Don’t get me wrong, the milky sick, the crying, the general ‘ooo, new person’ is quite exciting, but until they start to show a bit of personality, they ain’t getting a mention here (you hear that, future un-concepted children of mine?)*. As the weird, eastern European owner of a toy shop in Cumbria said when she looked at my sleeping baby’s face
a couple of months ago, “he’s still more of an animal.” She was right, in a slightly rude way. But, as he’s hit the big six, the allimportant 0.5, that animal is starting to be replaced by actual human. And guess what? He’s a %$£&ing nightmare. THE PACK I know I say this about all of my children, paying particular attention to the three-year-old whose soul was once probably the possession of a Tolkien-esque, world-smashing demon, but my baby seems to have developed similar bombastic tendencies. There is dried blood on the back of both my arms right now from where he has scratched at me with his tiny razorsharp talons. It doesn’t help that his
name is Fox. X Files reference. My wife and I agree that, as well as being our biggest baby (11lbs at birth), he is also the earliest to want all the things. All the things. Get near him and he will snag you, grasping hold of any body part he can, and draw you into his Sarlacc Pit of a mouth, hungrily giggling as he does. Lay him down on the floor and he’ll flip over like one of those Boston Dynamic robots righting itself, ready to seek out his next victim. Run, Peppa Pig doll! He’s gonna suck on you! SAME But, as more of the human person starts to emerge from the primordial chubby-cheeked doughiness of the baby, I can’t help but remember the words of the toy shop owner. Granted, those words were memorable

as they were delivered via a thick, hardto-place, James Bond villain accent, but she got me thinking for a good long while after. I think because we paint frescos on the walls of Florentine chapels, design and fly double decker aeroplanes, and have like totally been on the moon and stuff (you’ve done all three of those, right?), we think we’re somehow special; that we’re not just a bunch oddly upright and overly-concerned-with-our-phones animals. Seriously, there’s nothing to differentiate

ELEVATED THINKING You might be suggesting that I differ from said hypothetical beaver by the fact that I’m questioning the very nature of our being; that I’m showing signs of intelligence beyond a desire to survive and reproduce. But I’m not really. And don’t get me started on the whole reproduction thing. Four kids. Right now, I’m writing these words on a train, early in the morning. All I can think about is returning to the safe, enveloping snuggle-pit that is my bed, and the warm, creamy thighs of my wife. Too much information? Anyway, my ongoing thoughts and feelings dwell almost entirely on the animalistic, only occasionally “elevating” to human standard when tackling a
difficult dilemma, such as being asked, “drinking in or taking out?” Therefore, there is no real difference between me and my six-month-old: despite knowing how to fix the router when the internet goes down, and to steer clear of Micklegate on a race day, we’re essentially the same.

between a human and, say, a beaver: a beaver looks after it’s young (after having the overwhelming compulsion to create them, ladies), finds food, likes to cuddle up in the warmth, and even builds stuff. Dams. Damn. In fact, the only difference I can think of between me and a beaver, is that the beaver knows how to build things on instinct, whereas the most recent LEGO set I constructed was a bit wonky and fell apart as soon as I… erm… my children played with it.
EAT HIM That’s probably why we get on so well. I must admit that when I see him, I want to grab hold of his little pudding hands and stuff them in my mouth. I want to kiss his bloody face off. Urgh, he’s just so lovely! Yes, every item of clothing I own has a stained dribble patch on the shoulder, but so do all of his from my wet kisses with which I carpet-bomb his tummy. MMM, BABIES. I’m letting it all out; all six months of withheld baby joy. I am, however, excited to see the child he’ll grow up to be. I currently have one who is caring and creative, one who is sensitive and inquisitive, another who is a blond-haired wrecking ball, and now this wee guy. What other personality types are there? I’m hoping for Hollywood child actor, so we can really cash in on him. Oh, but he’s ginger… *That statement probably just made my wife automatically ovulate.

Because of this, they sadly don’t know much about his past – but it looks like he didn’t have a great start due to his nervousness around people. He loves other dogs however, and comes to life when he’s around them – so if you’re part of an adult-only home and already have a confident dog, Dave might just be the dude for you. TEDDY This friendly chap is a very special one indeed – he’s deaf, and therefore needs an experienced owner or someone who’s trained deaf dogs before. However, if you think you can give this lovely lad the caring home he needs you’ll be given full support before and after adoption. NON-SURGICAL NOSE JOBS Non-surgical nose correction has seen a big rise in popularity recently, and there’s good reason, too. Dermal filler is injected in small amounts and in precise locations into your skin so that there is total control over the shape and contours created by the procedure. THE FUTURE IS BACK
OCT
Where we’re going, we don’t need roads
It’s the Government’s Year of Engineering, and the National Railway Museum are celebrating by bringing their Future Engineers event back for a third year. With free activities for the whole family, and inspirational shows – including award-winning science presenter and rapper Jon Chase, and brand new show Izzy’s Incredible Adventure – it’s no wonder upwards of 40,000 people are expected to make tracks to York this October half term. Visit www.railwaymuseum.org.uk
STATE OF THE ART It doesn’t get much more futuristic than this It’s the York Mediale Festival and we’re super excited to see how media and technology can enhance and evolve art as we know it. Trust us – you won’t have experienced anything like this before. York city centre is being taken over by this ground-breaking new festival full of innovative and thought-provoking stuff – from dance to music and live performances to exhibitions. Pop down to one of the events at various locations, including York Theatre Royal, York Guildhall and even Piccadilly Car Park, for some truly out-ofthis-world experiences. Visit www.yorkmediale.com to find out more.
WE’LL DRINK TO THAT! Especially since there’s 10% off If you’re someone that regularly looks for any excuse to go out for drinks (celebrating your cat’s fourth birthday is a good enough reason, right?), then York’s newest discount club is for you. Craft Savvy is an exclusive membership that gives you at least 10% off all drinks all day, every day, at any Craft Savvy premises. Yeah – you read that right. Any drink, any day, any time, at over 25 of York’s most well-known pubs, bars, restaurants, breweries and distilleries. Most of them even offer discounts on food, too! So, how does it work? Well, it’s free to join and get your first card. After that it’s just £4.95 per month – and you can cancel anytime. Visit www.craftsavvy.co.uk
YORK DUNGEONS: THE HOME OF HALLOWEEN The ghouls and goblins at The York Dungeons are proving they’re the place to be this Halloween, with several creepy events for the whole family. From scarier adult-only experiences (where you might need to pick up some slightly different ‘boos’ in the Tavern after the tour…), to a special less-scary walking tour especially for your little monsters – there’s no wonder they’ve called themselves the Home of Halloween. Visit www.thedungeons.com/york for more information.
YORK MAZE: HALLOWEEN AND HALLOWSCREAM
YORK’S CHOCOLATE STORY Or should we say, York’s SHOCKolate Story? History’s never been so tasty. Head for this Trick or Treat Walking Tour to find out more about the ghastly giants of confectionary – including the spooky ‘Terry’s All Ghould’, ‘Rowntree’s Fright Pastilles’ and, of course, the ‘Kit Bat’. What could be more Halloween than candy (sorry, sweets) and ghost-related puns? Check out www.yorkschocolatestory.com to find out more.
CASTLE HOWARD: PIRATES VS ZOMBIES
This October half term, your little ones can experience Halloween like never before. The house and grounds have been taken over by a gang of ghostly pirates and terrifying zombies. But what’s more – they’re looking for new recruits! Will you be Team Pirate or Team Zombie? The event includes indoor and outdoor activities, as well as workshops to teach you how to be a zombie, or a pirate, and even a daily battle! Why not get into character and come dressed as your choice? For
