PAWS FOR THOUGHT We’ve got a new member at YLL HQ. A PUPPY. She’s currently fast asleep on my desk, against the archive of Your Local Links that stack up next up to my computer. You might not be surprised to hear that her office debut went down exceptionally well. We got resounding ‘awws’ from each department and the prompt creation of a cuddle queue. The cuddle queue is yet to die down. Puppy Mabel is in very high demand. We’ve found pups to be the perfect addition to the team at Your Local Link, and their application process is pretty simple. Provided they’re well behaved,
friendly with others, and, of course, toilet trained, we’re not too fussed. Studies into pets in the office have revealed that they can reduce stress, raise productivity, increase collaboration and build relationships. With this in mind, you might want to get started on your own pitch for the workplace... Personally I can vouch that a day with dogs around is a very good day. Having a pup in the office has been calming and reassuring, and when work gets a bit much, I’ll take a break from the computer and give the nearest available pooch a pat.
We’re blessed with several canine pals here: shoutout to Eva, Stanley and Panda who all make regular appearances, and have been super tolerant of the new girl in town. When there’s scope for a positive impact on mental health (and there’s dogs involved), I’m always happy to indulge. World Mental Health Awareness Day comes through on the 10th October. I’ll be working on that self-care initiative by spending quality time with the new pup, and keeping an eye out for those who might not be feeling as chipper as me.
EDITOR’S LETTER
I hope that you, dear reader, get to take some time out with your favourite pet pals - whether that’s booking into The Cat’s Whiskers for your daily dose of feline fuss, checking out some cute puppy videos online or singling out a pet-owning friend for a coffee. And if anyone is in need of a puppy cuddle, you know who to call. P.S. Don’t forget to check out the latest pets in need of their forever homes on page 46.

What’s inside What’s COVER STORY
COLUMNS
CHESS THE MUSICAL. This rarely-seen musical, with songs such as One Night in Bangkok and I Know Him So Well, is coming to York for a super limited run. Starring some of the biggest talent in York, the story revolves around two World Chess Championships competitors – American Freddie Trumper and Russian Anatoly Sergievsky – and Freddie’s assistant, Florence Vassey. As a love triangle forms, it becomes clear that chess isn’t the only game being played. Don’t miss this stunning spectacle live at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre from 23rd-26th October.
14. CLAIRE. This time, Claire’s dispelling the myth that Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and the Marvel movies are the best things since sliced bread – and that actually, some of the slightly more indie productions might just be worth your time.
FEATURES
42. HOWARD. Our lovely Howard’s taken the concept of being a crazy cat lady and transformed into being a not-so-crazy plant man. Not got quite the same ring to it, but the sentiment’s there.
20-21. TIME TRAVEL. Anyone who’s anyone in York will have seen the legendary Bile Beans sign on Lord Mayors Walk – but what’s it all about? Find out all about the mystery ‘pills’ that promised to ‘keep you healthy, brighteyed and slim’ in this month’s Time Travel. 18-19. WALKING WITH THE WANDERER. It might be a bit of a trek in itself to get there, but this month’s Wander will take you through the gorgeous Knaresborough, and the Nidd Gorge.
8
10-12. YORK LIFE. Take yourself back to last Christmas’ Your Local Link magazine, when the lovely Rachel Ragg talked to us all about Ye Stupide Book and some of the slightly… less logical, shall we say, things she’s done. Well, she’s got a few more Stupid titbits for you this time – and you’re gonna love it.
EVENTS 52. EVENTS HOTLIST. The best of the cream. The crème de la crop. In other words, our favourite events. 53-59. EVENTS & THEATRE. Wooooo-ooooooh! It’s October and that can only mean one thing: Halloween! Of course, we’ve scoured the land that surrounds our lovely city for the creepiest, eeriest and best events – for both the whole family and the over 18s.
Online
Our shiny website, www.yourlocallink.co.uk, is filled with original content that you won’t find in the magazine. This month, check out…
FEATURES CLAIRE’S TECH TALK. It’s Halloween – so it’s time for a scary story. You might not think a non-fictional column about technology could be scary – but you wait ‘til you read about Polybius. INTERVIEWS. This month, we hear from The Inbetweeners star Joe Thomas, who will be appearing in What’s In A Name? at the Grand Opera House from the 8th-12th October. REVIEWS, REVIEWS, REVIEWS. We’ve been here, there and everywhere – and told you all about it! Pop online and find out exactly what we thought about theatre and events around York – and what to look out for.
LARGER MAGAZINE FEATURES Always keep an eye on our site for the occasional ‘blown-up’ version of your favourite mag columns. So if you didn’t quite get enough info out of your horoscope this month, you’ll find even more online.

AND LIFE IN GENERAL
COLUMNIST
Rachel Ragg
Gentle readers will forgive me for returning to a subject that I thought I had already covered exhaustively.
And so I consult the neighbour. “I know this is a very bizarre question,” I say. “But I don’t suppose you have seen two John Lewis mattress protectors?”
I would say it involves Stupidity, but this might make me look stupid. So I will instead say that in a former life I was an academic. As a result, I am completely au fait with the correct way to reference my sources and how to present a manuscript. This involves not accidentally writing an entire chapter of a book as a footnote. Moreover, I WOULDN’T DREAM OF WRITING A WHOLE ARTICLE WITH THE CAPS LOCK ON. Because that would be very stupid indeed. Now we have cleared that up, I am glad to report that, since my previous column about the Stupid Book, I have done nothing Stupid at all. And so the research by Dunning and Kruger into what Bill Bryson calls “Stupidology” is of absolutely no concern to me. 1. more or less free money.
This is especially of no concern to me in the light of the John Lewis Mattress Protector Saga.
This is what I asked myself as I searched high and low for the missing John Lewis mattress protectors. I even sent Teenager 1 into the spidery attic with a torch, just in case someone had filed them away in an unusual fit of efficiency.
It was all so very straightforward. I needed two single mattress protectors for a rental property. And so I did the obvious thing: I bought them in John Lewis. Then I found similar items for half the price in Dunelm at Clifton Moor. Jollly good, thought I. I can take the John Lewis ones back, thereby obtaining a £70 refund that I can spend at Wombells, because that’s
What could possibly go wrong?
To no avail. Hmm, I thought. I suppose it is just possible that I was stupid enough to leave them on the pavement when I got them out of the car, and a neighbour might have taken them in for safe keeping.
He thinks for a moment. “Were they in identical plastic cases?” he says. “Indeed they were,” I reply. “Oh yes,” he says. “I saw them on the pavement. But as it was Bin Day, I assumed you were throwing them out with the rubbish.” Ah. A fair assumption. I can only hope a passing tramp found them on the pavement, as that would be a bit less Stupid than sending them to be mashed up at Hazel Court. Fortunately, I am under no illusions at all about my claims to Stupidology. It is just as well, given that even buying strawberries from Mannion’s stall in the market turns out to be an unsafe enterprise. You would think there is not much that can go wrong in the purchase of

So off I trundle to the station. It’s hard to know which is more egregious: the hordes of staggeringly drunk types, or the middle-aged woman in the Panama hat (i.e. me). I fear it might be the latter.
YORK LIFE
Who has in turn gone to deal with the drunkards at the station, as it is a race weekend. And he has taken my keys with him.
A quarter of an hour later, I am reunited with my keys. So I am now officially not stupid, and all is well. Or so I think, as I disgorge yet another load of washing from the machine once I get home. Said load includes a sparklingly clean mobile phone charger, which is slightly interesting. a punnet of strawberries. That’s what I thought, anyway. Until, that is, I arrived at the front door post-strawberrypurchasing and realised that the house key was missing. Along with my car key and the keys to, um, about five other houses, some of which do not belong to me. Oh goody, I don’t think. And so I retrace my steps to Clarkson’s and Brown’s, to no avail. Third time lucky, though: it turns out I left them at Mannion’s in the market. Only Mannion’s have, very efficiently, passed them on to the duty manager.
I plug the phone and charger in. The charger immediately becomes strangely hot, and make a fizzing noise. All I feel is cheated. Surely these ancient Nokia things are indestructible? Was I supposed to put it in the tumble dryer as well? No: that would have been very stupid. Slightly on a par with booking train tickets for the wrong date, which I would never do, either. Ah well, I think. I might put a phone charger in a ‘mixed colours’ wash, but with all my academic training I would at least never be stupid enough to write an article in footnotes. And for that I am mightily grateful.
Surely these ancient Nokia things are indestructible?

Want to know more? Go to www.yourlocallink.co.uk to read extended versions of this month’s horoscopes!
Horoscopes LIBRA
23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT This could be a pivotal period for two distinctly different groups of Librans, e.g. the 16-24 year old and the 50-60 year olds. In both cases events conspire to create a different image of their world, and a different view of possible futures. Yes, there is a romantic/emotional energy at play here, but it’s more than that! There’s an inner revolution going on within the psyche that propels you forwards in an attempt to make up for what is deemed as being lost time and lost opportunities.
SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV A sexy and sensuous month for many members of the sign, especially for ladies in the 35-50 age bracket. There’s a lot of feminine intrigue going on, while to their credit, the gentlemen are a little more direct. Either way, a month of late nights and parties where you are the only guest. (Work it out, okay?)
22ND NOV
If you’ve got dreams, follow them. If you’ve got questions, ask them. If you have doubts, examine them carefully and see if they are justified. If you’ve got kids, tell ‘em who’s boss, and if you’ve got pets, expect a few bills! If you’ve got debts, do deals to pay them off, and if you’ve got an identity crisis it’s time for the real you to stand up now! Nice surprise at Halloween!
L-to-R: Eminem, American rapper, songwriter, film producer and actor; Simon Cowell, English talent manager, TV producer and TV judge; Avril Lavigne, Canadian singer, songwriter and actress; Bruno Mars, American singer, songwriter, record producer and dancer.
dilemma: you know you can probably ‘muddle through’ by being cautious, but increasingly this philosophy finds itself on thin ice. To muddle through is no longer enough and in words of one syllable, you’ll find yourself wanting more. A lot more! Therefore, it looks like plans are being made and secrets are being held. You flex your muscles and, very gently at first, you start rocking the boat.
22ND DEC
CAPRICORN - 19TH JAN
It’s winter, so don’t kid yourself that it’s still autumn. You might love the ‘English seasons’ but I’ll bet you that there is someone close to you who does not! Enjoy your overcoats and woolly jumpers, but spare a thought for a key player in your life who longs for everlasting sunshine and perpetual summer!

Perhaps all Librans will find themselves having to make a few important decisions at this time, but those in the two age groups mentioned will recognise the importance and significance of their choices. The astrological advice would be to suggest that any step that represents a step forwards is the right step to take, but on a personal level, I can understand how this might be seen as a risk – and it may take you some time to find your courage. To some extent, finances might have a role to play in this

20TH JAN
AQUARIUS - 18TH FEB
A relatively calm and uneventful month could be spoiled if you see your glass as being half empty rather than half full. Therefore, this could be time for a reality check, especially around the 12th or 13th when someone seems to be getting something you don’t have, but would very much like to have. Think of all the times over the last year when it’s been the other way round!
19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
If Aquarians need to do a reality check, then so do you! Are you getting the most of what you want? If the answer is yes, then celebrate what you’ve got without looking for more. However, if the answer is no, it may be time to extract the digit from your rear end and start doing something constructive to change the situation to your advantage.
ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR
A busy time on the work scene, especially if you find yourself in the ‘teacher’ or ‘trainer’ roles. Nice vibes on the home front, with lots of co-operation from partners and family. Big bills on a car can be avoided by taking preventative measures and you should be feeling quite smug about successful deals on luxury items.
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
Winter is here and the part of the Taurean spirit withers and dies. Not too much time to shiver in silence because work projects, both the old and the new, demand your time and attention, causing you to hibernate and get your nose to the grindstone. At the back of your mind you know you’ll be richer by next spring, which is a great incentive! Good money boost between the 6th and 10th.
Gemini 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN The secret of your success in October is to recognise your limitations and live your life accordingly. A little bit more ‘me time’ will
be an invaluable investment, and strangely enough, other people close to you will also recognise this fact and encourage you in your quest. On the downside, parents with grown up children may need to create some distance!
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
Some clearly defined divisions of loyalties, both between people and also in connection with the use of your time. You cannot be in two places at once and cannot dance to more than one tune. Duty tugs your left arm while desire tugs at your right, and the desire for stability clashes with your demand for adventure.

Virgo 23RD AUG - 22ND SEP
A steady and stable month, which should be good news for some of you, but maybe not such good news for people who want to change the world – especially their world! Either way, it’s not a good time for rushing or pushing, and it’s far better if you can just take events in your stride and, cliché though it may be, go with the flow. For now.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX I’ve never been a huge one for watching TV box sets or going through movie after movie. Mainly because I’m pretty hard to please – either the acting doesn’t convince me, the storyline isn’t gripping enough, or the script doesn’t excite me. I don’t know anyone who wasn’t hooked on Game of Thrones. I don’t know anyone who dislikes Scrubs. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t seen all the Harry Potter films. I mean, obviously I didn’t watch Game of Thrones, I hate Scrubs, and I was forced to watch one of the Harry Potter films but I fell asleep and have no idea which one it was. Don’t even get me started on Breaking Bad. You can do away with the ‘Breaking’ part – it’s just bad.
Netflix. You know the ones – if they were people they’d own a record player and frequent independent coffee shops. I search by category and sometimes skip straight to page 14 so that I get the more unseen stuff. And you know what? Most of it’s crap. But then you find a diamond in the rough – and it takes a proverbial piddle all over your Game of Thrones and Stranger Things. I tell you what, I’ll do you a favour and share some of my findings with you. Save you sifting through the rubbish. Thank me later.
I’m Not Just Boring
Take My Advice
‘But Claire, maybe that just means you’re hard to please, with no interests or personality’, I hear you say. Harsh, but a fair assumption. Although I assure you, I do like some things. Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror, for example, is small-screen magic. Okay, I’m a gadget geek with a love for technology, so I’m always going to like stuff like that. But it really got me, and each episode is cinematic genius. JJ Abram’s Cloverfield franchise is clever, intriguing and thought-provoking. So I do like some stuff. But most of the time I find that the stuff I like isn’t mainstream. I look for the little indie releases that don’t get the front page on
If you want a movie full of the most unpredictable twists and turns, with totally unique cinematography, then let me introduce you to Searching. The entire movie is viewed through computer screens – whether it be video calls, CCTV footage, or YouTube clips. What starts life as a simple missing person thriller quickly takes you on the most realistic and chilling journey – purely because it’s executed through mediums that we engage in daily: social media. If you’re searching for a new Netflix box set then don’t follow the crowd – click on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. No, not the kids’ series about

the teenage witch – the adult series about the teenage witch. That’s right, it really is THAT Sabrina, but with a dark and gruesome twist. Not one for the faint hearted or the underage – but my God it’s gripping. And there are 20 episodes on Netflix right now, so you know what to do. Fancy watching a terrifying Stephen King? Obviously you’re thinking of The Shining or Carrie. But no. I’m just gonna leave 1408 here. You’ve probably never heard of it – but it’s a little hidden treasure. What existed previously as one of Stephen King’s short stories became a feature film starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. It’s a haunted hotel movie with absolutely no clichés. If you like thrillers and you’re over 18, then grab a cushion to hide behind and get it watched. For my last trick, I’m going to suggest another series that you need to
watch – but you may struggle to as it’s hard to find. Worth the search, though. It’s called FlashForward. All I’m going to say about it is: pretty much everyone in the entire world blacks out at exactly the same time for two minutes and 17 seconds. Tell me that’s not gripping stuff right there.
Each To Their Own
Now I can’t take away from the fact that Peaky Blinders, The Walking Dead, and the Marvel movies are all very good. But are they better than some of the lesserknown stuff out there? Was Avengers: Endgame better than Searching? Is the new series of The Walking Dead going to be better than the new series of Sabrina? I’ll leave that up to you.
I just want to redirect you over to the front cover. And here comes the shameless plug that goes with it: Chess the Musical, Joseph Rowntree Theatre, Wednesday 23rd-Saturday 26th October. I’m in it. There we go, done, see you there.

PUT THE ‘FUN’ IN FUNDRAISING
If you’ve got some time on your hands and want to put it to good use, then the Three Bears Foundation are looking for people to come up with fundraising ideas for them. Set up in loving memory of Founder Mark’s late wife Jane Burn, who sadly died from pancreatic cancer, the Three Bears Foundation has a clear aim: to raise awareness of this underdiagnosed and least understood cancer. The Foundation works hard to build a community of people who want to live life to the full, and of people wanting to contribute and support in any which way they can. So far, the Three Bears Foundation have already raised over £80,000 for Pancreatic Cancer UK – through a number of events such as the Great North Run, the Cardiff Half Marathon, and more. Future fundraising activities look set to include activities such as clay pigeon shooting, fishing, and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!
n If you’d like to get involved with the Three Bears Foundation, or you have any ideas for fundraising, please email threebearsfoundation@gmail.com.

WALKING WITH THE
KNARESBOROUGH AND THE NIDD GORGE
Last month we wandered alongside the lower reaches of the river Nidd near Tockwith where the river flows sluggishly through the flat fields of the Vale of York towards its confluence with the Ouse. This walk of about five and a half miles to the west of Knaresborough includes another stretch beside the Nidd. Here it’s a different river flowing, often quite fast, through a rocky, tree-fringed gorge. The walk also explores some of the other land between Knaresborough and Harrogate. If, travelling up the slope between Knaresborough and Harrogate on the main road, you wondered what lay between - here’s your chance to find out.
Directions
1 At the platform exit go left uphill on Kirkgate (use the underpass if coming to the station from the car park). At the end of Kirkgate turn right, quickly coming to a gateway to the right of the police station. Go through this across the car park towards the ruined castle. Pass this to the left heading towards the war memorial. To the left of the memorial (almost at the back of the museum) there’s a gap in the wall. Go through and down some steps. Cross a path in the old motte to go straight on up steps into Bebra Gardens. Here turn right then left to approach a pool. Just before this turn right down more steps. Go right again down more steps and at the bottom turn left onto the tarmac road Waterside. Where this forks keep right soon arriving at a busy main road.
2 Cross the road and go right over the river bridge. Proceed uphill. Just past the last house on the right cross the road at the ‘Ringway Footpath’ sign. Follow this path with a wire fence on the right to stile. Go over into a narrow grassy strip which quickly widens into a field. Keep left to find stile in the corner. Cross and continue with a hedge on the left to a further stile after which the hedge is on the right. At a dip pass through the gap and turn half right (not through the gate to the right) to follow the path alongside the hedge on the
right. Continue into the next small field to approach the railway at a gate.
3 Cross carefully and go on along a clear path with a golf course to the right. Soon houses appear on the left and the path swings sharp left to pass between gardens to emerge onto a road. Turn right here soon coming to the main road (A59) on the edge of Starbeck.
4 To continue the walk cross the road and go right along the pavement for 250 metres to find Bilton Hall Drive (you can return to Knaresborough on frequent buses along the road or get back to York by going left to Starbeck station). Go down the tarmac drive turning left at the end onto the ‘Beryl Burton Cycleway’.
5 About 200 metres after the cycleway kinks take the path signed ‘Knaresborough Round’ to the right down a stoned track. Follow this into Woodland Trust land. Keep on the track coming to a fenced area on the left and a steep bank on the right. At a path fork keep right ahead downhill. After some steps keep straight on towards the river where you turn left. The path continues coming to a boardwalk and then a footbridge over the river. DISCLAIMER: Walks are undertaken at your own risk. Due care must be taken in following the walk, particularly after poor weather. Whilst every care is taken in compiling the description changes may have occurred since publication. Neither the walk author nor Your Local Link can accept any responsibility for errors or omissions.

Miles
Getting there Start in Knaresborough. If driving the best parking spot is the large car park to the right of the main road at the bottom of the hill just before the bridge over the river. Travelling to Knaresborough by train is easy with hourly departures from York taking about 30 minutes. The directions below are from the railway station. If parking join the walk by crossing the main road from the car park entrance, going down Waterside opposite then climbing up the footpath Water Bag Bank on the left to the station.
Refreshments There a loads of options in Knaresborough for the start and finish of the walk including the Old Ticket Office tea room at the station. Mid walk refreshments can be obtained by diverting down the main road to Starbeck (as indicated at point 4 of the Directions).
What to see There’s a huge amount of variety to this walk. As well as its standard attractions (castle, viaduct, market square, etc.), Knaresborough has a lot more to offer in its backstreets, parks and riverside. The walk towards Starbeck is through quiet fields with good views back over the town. The main interest though, has to be the woodland and river of the Nidd Gorge. The mix of trees (this is a good walk for autumn colour), abundant wildlife and feeling of remoteness belie its proximity to Harrogate. Various birds frequent the river: there’s a good chance of seeing heron, kingfisher, dipper and grey wagtail amongst other species.

right alongside the river. Keep to the riverside on a narrow path, quite rough in places, until steps take you up away from the bank to a stoned track. Take this to the right. Ignore a path to the right, soon going downhill and ignoring a further crossing path. The track comes back down to the river where you continue along the bank passing a seat. Eventually you leave the woodland with private gardens to the left but the river still on the right.

Where the path comes to a wire fence turn sharp left away from the river uphill between gardens. At the residential road turn right, then following it round to the left.

it back towards Knaresborough taking care on the often narrow pavement. To return to the station cross the road at the mini roundabout and go down Church Lane almost opposite (if returning to the riverside carpark go right at the roundabout downhill). TimeTravel Join us as we venture back in time. No pushing, okay?
THIS MONTH: BILE BEANS Most striking thing about Lord Mayors Walk? Sure, the city walls are great, and the Victorian frontage of York St John is pretty, but our money is on a certain ‘ghost sign’. The Bile Beans sign at the end of the road, overlooking the junction with Monkgate, has for decades assured us that they “keep you healthy, bright eyed and slim”. But what are Bile Beans anyway, and how long has that sign been up there? Follow us…
ingredient that Captain James Cook himself had discovered as a miracle ‘cure-all’. They were sold to cure problems such as indigestion, headaches, pimples, and even the dreaded “female weakness”. However, that was all a lie. They were actually created by English entrepreneur and chancer Charles Fulford. He mashed up some rhubarb, liquorice and charcoal powder, then rolled it in gelatine. The Aboriginal ingredient, and Captain Cook’s involvement, were mere marketing ploys… they worked. Bile Beans were sold across the UK and the wider world as a cure for just about whatever Fulford thought was ‘popular’. If there was an outbreak of flu, Bile Beans’ marketing would change to claim that they cure that, too. In reality they just made you poo.
Fobbery
Big push
In a word, Bile Beans were a con. Invented by Australian chemist Charles Forde in the 1890s, Bile Beans were made from a secret Aboriginal
Fulford’s marketing campaign, however, was immense. When the product was first released, he set out on a huge push to promote them, having armies of
men delivering leaflets to houses and painting signs to inform the public about their wondrous affect. Conman to the end, Fulford died young at only 30, leaving a chunk of his wealth to Barnados Children’s Home (on the condition that they opened a shop on site that sold only Bile Beans to the kids – it’s okay, they got out of it and won a lump sum). So you might think it was then, in the late 19th century, that our own beloved Bile Beans sign was created. But no. You see, back then the wall upon which the sign is now proudly
adorned wouldn’t have been much use as nobody could see it. Until the 1940s that crossroads between Lord Mayors Walk, Monkgate

and St Maurice’s Road looked very different – due the namesake of the latter street. The open, grassy corner on which curiously isolated headstone still stand was once the home to St Maurice’s Church, a Victorian recreation of a medieval chapel. As well as the church, other houses and buildings stretched along Lord Mayors Walk, right up to where today the Bile Beans sign can be seen.
Advertising opportunities So prior to the ‘40s the Bile Beans wall was actually one side of a narrow alley and therefore no good for advertising. That changed when the church and neighbouring buildings were pulled down and the roads were widened to better accommodate motor traffic. This left the owner of the surviving property a huge wall to sell for advertising, to be immediately snapped up by Bile Beans. By the ‘40s, however, Biles Beans had changed their marketing yet again to target the new fad for being slim.

Hence “healthy, bright-eyed and slim” was painted on this particular sign, as opposed to the truth, which would have read “it’s a just sickly sweet laxative, you morons”.
Survivor Today the Bile Beans sign is York’s most famous ‘ghost sign’, and one of a very small number that is constantly repainted and maintained. Enlivened in the ‘80s, and again just a few years ago, Bile Beans is as much a recognisable sight of York as the Minster and Clifford’s Tower. You can buy t-shirts with that eye-catching slogan printed on them, after all. While Bile Beans themselves died a (probably deserved) death in the late ‘70s, their gargantuan marketing campaign lives on in some small way, now selling nostalgia and fun, and not balls of processed sugar. Also, what the hell is “female weakness”? Answers on a postcard… Ceramic & porcelain tiles. Glass & Mosaic tiles. Reproduction Victorian tiles.

Tickets to Hairspray
HAIR PLAY
Don’t be fooled – this is not just a play about hair. In fact, it’s not just a play at all. Hairspray started life on the big screen in 1988 before being adapted into a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical back in 2002. And you can win a family ticket (up to two adults and three children) to see York Light Youth bring it back to the stage at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre from the 6th-9th November. Bursting at the seams with toe-tappingly fun songs and colourful dancing throughout, the story tells the tale of larger-than-life Tracy Turnblad – whose
dream is to dance on popular local TV programme, The Corny Collins Show. But will she find success as a larger lady? You’ll have to come down and find out. To be in with a chance of winning, simply answer the following question: What’s the name of Hairspray’s leading lady? a) Tracy Spinblad b) Tracy Walkblad c) Tracy Turnblad Send your answer (along with your name, address and contact number) on a postcard marked ‘Hairspray competition’ to the address on page 6, or via email to competitions@yourlocallink.co.uk. SPORT
Local “top of the league” after a couple of matches, but after a busy glut of August and September games I feel I can now start to look at the table like it’s not going to alter as much as it does after about three fixtures. Credit to Steve Watson who took the Manager of the Month award for August, and has generally steered the club on an upward trajectory since his arrival in February. Not that all supporters have endeared themselves to Watto, whom after a draw at home to Southport was vocal in his disappointment at a few full-time whistle boos, and taking objection to one particular ‘supporter’ who shouted out “Shambles”. I don’t think the supporter in question was responding to where that new Harry Potter shop is in the city centre. Many have since pointed out the short memories of these fans, just a short time after the disastrous eras of Martin Gray and Sam Collins’ last season – not to mention Jackie McNamara’s ill-fated reign that significantly contributed to York operating at the lowest level in their proud history. What I would say to Steve Watson is to focus on the other 2,500-odd fans who generally know their onions. This sort of thing has happened for years. During Gary Mills’ first spell we were beating Wimbledon 4-0 and playing some of
Does anyone actually enjoy the Ashes? I don’t mean cricket, but the Ashes. I enjoy it, but only if I know the result is in England’s favour and thus can watch the highlights knowing the eventual outcome – but watching it live is such a nerve-racking experience. Only in our country do you go for months eagerly anticipating a summer of cricket, vowing to watch every ball, to suddenly checking the weather forecast religiously and hoping there is no play for the rest of the series. It’s equally tense following the test match during breaks at work and seeing the BBC’s text summaries. One read: “Broad removes Head after Archer drops catch”. That seemed a bit drastic – unless of course it was a dropped catch of Steve Smith who never seems to get out. Wonder if he would hit it so clean if we sandpapered the ball before each over? Of course, Joffra Archer did his best to curtail the brilliance of Smith leading to a feature, again on BBC, as to what you would rather do than face a 90mph ball from Archer. My personal favourite was one man who said he’d prefer to fight a tiger armed only with a biro. It’s good to see that after my last column, York City have managed to stay in the top places after an encouraging start to the season. I couldn’t bring myself to boast being

the best football I’ve ever seen in 20 years at Bootham Crescent – yet after conceding an irrelevant goal in injury time someone shouted out: “bloody disgrace Mills”. No need for a ‘bloody’. I’m undoubtedly still behind Steve Watson and feel he will take us back to, maybe not the Promised Land, but to a level of football where opposing sides bring crowds larger than the amount of flags they bring. However, one thing I really wanted him to do was mastermind a victory at bloody Guiseley away! There is need for a ‘bloody’ when memories of them beating us 6-1 in a match that lasted twice as long as it should have done due to floodlight failures, are still fresh. I think the only time I’ve ever felt more demoralised was when my daughter said the two things she loved most in the world were: “Mummy and Hula-Hoops!” In all fairness an entertaining 0-0 draw at Nethermoor Park was a far more enjoyable (and earlier) journey home than three years previous. I also saw a football first when the PA announcer shouted in no uncertain terms to York to get down off their new scoreboard. While York City look to maintain their place at the top, their rugby counterparts the York City Knights seem to have been doing this sort of thing for years now. Another stunning

regular season has come to a close with the Knights securing third place and a play-off place after a campaign that has exceeded expectations – given they’d only just been promoted to the second tier. Hopefully they can seal promotion ready for their own move to the new community stadium, although they’ll have to do it the hard way with tough games. First away at Toulouse and then, if victorious, a potential trip to Toronto to secure their destiny. Local news now and the York City Supporters Trust are continuing to fundraise with a series of events, and not just football-related. The 11th October sees a Battle of the Bands competition taking place at the Fulford Arms. n Tickets are going fast, so head to www.ycst.org.uk/ battle to secure a place.

NEWS
While we want to be positive here in the Your Local Link offices and believe that summer will last forever, we’re starting to get realistic and accept that rainy days are upon us. And you know what – that’s okay. We actually love autumn: hot chocolate, bonfire night, cosy blankets… and more. However, despite the artistic pictures that can be captured when dancing in the rain, or the fun that can be had splashing in puddles with little ones, it’s really important to drive carefully as the weather changes. And it’s not just safety – did you know that if you splash a pedestrian then you could be fined £1,000? It’s important to be aware of other road users as well in poor conditions. Tim Alcock from LeaseVan.co.uk says: “Visibility can be reduced during a sudden downpour, and if there’s somewhere safe to pull over and wait out the shower then it’s often worth doing.” So to help keep you safe on the roads, here are nine things you can do to be extra careful in the rainy season: 1. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition. This might seem like common sense, but in the rain it’s even more important that your tyres have good tread on slippery surfaces, and they’re properly inflated. 2. Ensure you keep a good stopping
distance. On slippery roads, it takes longer to stop your vehicle. So make sure you stick to at least double the separation distance between you and the car in front. 3. Put your lights on. It’s always important that other road users see you, but using dipped headlights will help to keep you visible at all times. 4. Don’t go fast. When rain is especially heavy your visibility will be compromised as wipers can’t always keep up. Drive slower do you have time to react to hazards. 5. Be aware of flooded roads. Heavy rain can cause flash flooding, and this can be a danger when driving. If the flooding is too deep then stop, turn around safely, and find an alternative route. 6. Steamed up car. Make sure heat goes straight onto your windscreen – this helps to keep it from getting misted up and reducing visibility. 7. Aquaplaning. This is caused by your tyres losing traction on the road – usually caused by roads with a lot of surface water. Reduce your speed to help prevent it. 8. Watch out for other road users. It’s very important to be mindful of other road users – especially cyclists and pedestrians. 9. Stop. The simplest of them all – if the rain is so heavy that it’s causing severely reduced visibility then stop, and wait for it to improve.

ASK THE EXPERT MATT TODD
WELCOME, MELANIE!
Further to the news last month that we’re adding fitted German kitchens to our showroom at Monks Cross, I’m very excited to introduce you to Melanie – who is not just the latest addition to the Todds team, but our first ever Kitchen Designer. Melanie’s worked in the industry for nearly five years, and has gathered experience working for national and local kitchen companies by designing nearly a thousand kitchens in her time. She knows German kitchens inside and out, and putting together her technical knowledge and bubbly personality we’re positive we have a winning formula! She’ll be responsible for all aspects of kitchen design, quotes and installation, including measuring up and home visits – so please let us know if you’d like to book a call to be one of her first visits in the area. We’re hoping to have the displays fitted in our showroom during November. They’re by the kitchen manufacturer Nobilia and we’ll be supplying their kitchens direct from their workshops – so you can be assured of not only the best quality but also the best pricing. More details and opening offers to follow!

You may have noticed by now that we have had a switch up here at Your Local Link, we’re printing on 100% recycled paper! But enough about us, here are some quick life hacks you can use in your life to cut down on waste and help the environment. LUXURY YOGA MATS MADE FROM RECYCLED BOTTLES Described by Vogue as “stunning works of art”. Yoga Design Lab have created new mats made from natural tree rubber and recycled plastic bottle microfibres. Fashion forward and sustainable, these mats are a yoga lovers best friend. n £78 from Yoga Design Lab.
REUSABLE FOOD WRAPS - Instead of using plastic to wrap your sandwiches in, you can now buy cotton food wraps which are coated in plant based wax, so they work just like Clingfilm but are completely reusable and vegan. n From £11.12, Wrappa.
REUSABLE STRAWS - We’ve all seen those nightmare inducing images of poor turtles with plastic straws stuck up their noses, but at the same time the alternative of a soggy paper straw isn’t always appealing when it starts disintegrating in your drink. Now you don’t have to worry about either of that, with the availability of bamboo straws. These nifty little suckers are the perfect solve. n From £8.99, amazon.co.uk
ECOSIA - An alternative to Google, the mean green eco machine! The profits made by each search are used to plant trees. Their servers are run on 100% renewable energy and every search request removes 1kg of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Want to make a difference locally? Volunteer to help out with ‘Treemendous’ an initiative set up by York City Council with a target to plant 50,000 trees across York. You can help by offering up land or giving your time to help plant and water trees.

Our gardens are not only an enjoyable place for us to relax, but also a precious and valuable space for wildlife. It’s estimated that all the gardens in Britain cover approximately 10 million acres, which is an area larger than all the country’s nature reserves combined! Our gardens provide wildlife with a range of habitats to feed, breed and shelter. There are many ways in which you can attract wildlife to your garden – from putting up bird feeders to planting hedges for nesting birds; or by creating ponds and bog gardens to attract frogs, toads and newts. Adding seasonal plants that are pollen and nectar rich, and fruiting plants such as Cotoneaster or Skimmia japonica, will attract birds and insects; and planting ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus and Stipa can help shelter ground bugs and also produce attractive seed
heads. Not only do these look good but they also provide food for wildlife. Don’t forget that most creatures that enter our garden can be a welcome friend to gardeners, as they feed on pests like slugs, snails and greenfly – reducing the need to use chemical controls. Creating a wildlife-friendly garden is also a fantastic way of involving children, and can help encourage them to interact with the nature around them – and enjoy the outdoors. There are
Lewis
a number of activities and projects children can help with: from building an insect home to sowing flowers, or feeding birds. Why not keep a journal of what visitors you get to your garden throughout the seasons? Experts believe that we all have an in-built need to connect with nature, called ‘biophilia’, which brings with it better mental and physical health. Those who interact with nature generally tend to feel better within themselves, get more exercise and feel more relaxed – helping

to reduce stress levels. Gardening offers this benefit, allowing us to protect and look after our small part of the environment and makes a great difference to local wildlife and biodiversity. So why not make it your mission this month to create a wildlife haven, and reap the benefits of surrounding yourself with nature. Extend Your Salad Days As warmth fades in autumn many gardeners assume the salad days of summer are over. While many salad crops - such as tomatoes and cucumbers - do depend on the heat of summer, that’s not the case with many leafy salad plants. In fact, most leaf salads are easier to produce in the cooler months. There’s less chance of bolting (premature flowering at the expense of leaf production) and usually less pest damage – particularly pockmarked leaves caused by flea beetle. Growing salads in winter is especially easy if you’ve a greenhouse, polytunnel or some other under cover growing space like a cold frame. This will provide just enough protection from the cold and wet to keep plants going in all but the most extreme weather. And it’s not necessary to have soil in which to grow. If you’ve grown tomatoes or other summer crops in growbags or containers these
can be reused. Simply remove the roots of the old plants and fluff up the compost. Leafy salads don’t need a lot of nutrients, there should be enough fertility remaining to keep them happy. It’s also possible to grow leafy salads in smallish pots or even deep seed trays. Fill with good quality garden centre compost or, if you have it and it’s well-made, try home-made garden compost. Late September through October is an ideal time to sow most leafy salads for winter use. Those got going in September should give a good crop in the late autumn/early winter while those sown later may not produce usable leaves until the days lengthen and the weather warms in mid-February. They’ll then romp away, with a flush of green growth that should provide ample pickings through until early April. So what are the main leafy salads to sow now and crop through the winter? Number one on my list is the slightly peppery flavoured rocket. This is one of the easiest and most productive to grow. I prefer the standard type, the seed often labelled ‘cultivated rocket’. It seems to grow quicker and be more productive than other types such as wild rocket.
ESTABLISHED 1977 IN HAXBY. A Local Family Business Built on Customer Recommendations:
38
Another favourite is the oriental mizuna. Some think the flavour a bit bland, but it’s a rapid grower, probably even faster than rocket. The commonest type has a serrated green leaf, but there are others including some that are purplish-red. For something with a little more bite there are also various mustards. Two varieties I grow are the yellowish green ‘Golden Frills’ and the reddish ‘Ruby Streaks’. It’s also possible to buy seed packets of mixed leafy salads sometimes sold as ‘misticanza’. This can be a convenient option but I find the stronger growing types often in the mix, particularly the large-leaved ‘Giant Red’ mustard, can out-muscle some of the less vigorous. There are many other leaf salads you can grow through the winter. Some of these will manage perfectly well outside as well as inside. Rocket, mizuna and the mustards will also grow outside in early winter and even later if the weather doesn’t turn too hard. We’ll look at outside winter salads another time but meanwhile, if you’ve under cover growing space that would otherwise be unused over the winter, get some salad leaves going now.

G O T A GA R D E N I N G QUESTION?
Ask CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk or call Chris on 766266. Q. As the seasons are changing, please could you advise me on planting window boxes, planters, and hanging baskets using different coloured foliage and winter-hardy plants? Absolutely. Firstly, with window boxes and planters you should make sure you change your compost from the summer – as all the plant food that would have been in the soil will have been used up by now. Place a tall plant in the centre of your planter, maybe a dwarf conifer such as cupressus ‘Goldcrest Wilma’, chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Ellwoodii’, or skimmia ‘Rubella’. You should then surround your centrepiece with plants that are lower in height and placed in triangles from
the centre outwards. Some ideas could be sage – as it comes in different leaf colours and looks nice, choisya ‘Sundance’, or hebe James Stirling pinguifolia, rakaiensis, red edge, and greenglobe. When it comes to softening the edges of the planters, boxes and baskets, you’ll need a nice trailing plant. Try ajuga ‘burgandy glow’, or hedera ‘ivy’. Oregano also creeps softly with dark green foliage – and it smells amazing! Veronica ‘Georgia blue’ also has stunning blue flowers that open in late winter. Winter-flowering pansies, violas and primroses can also be added for colour – and colour always gives a visual ‘wow’. Otherwise, have fun!
Q. Please can you tell me why the large perennials on my borders have stopped flowering, or are flowering poorly? Dividing plants not only regenerates what might have become a sad-looking plant, but it’s also an easy and costeffective way of increasing your plant stocks. Many perennials deteriorate over time, slowly dying out in the centre – unless they’re lifted and divided every three or four years. Dig up overcrowded clumps with a fork – but try not to disturb the roots too much. Shake off excess soil and find the best point for division. Get rid of any diseased parts and the central part of the plant, and divisions from the outer section of the clump will grow into new, healthy plants. Just make sure that there are both healthy roots
BROWN NURSERIES
Chris Brown
and shoots in all divided parts. While you can divide some plants with your hands, tougher roots will need to be cut with a clean, sharp knife. If they prove to be very tough, then vigorously rooted clumps might need to be divided with two forks placed back to back in the centre of the clump, to offer additional separation and leverage. Hand forks might be enough, but be prepared to use full-sized forks if you need to. Always ease forks apart gently, teasing out roots to separate them – rather than wrenching them apart and breaking them. Replant new sections immediately after division at the same depth from which you took them. Firm in and water well.

g n i w o r G on me I like plants, now. It’s my new thing. House plants and that. I’ve recently discovered a fondness for them and have become slightly addicted to buying them to dot around my flat. I can’t believe I didn’t realise this about myself before. It’s like a switch went off in my head and now I’m a plant guy. It’s who I am. The green-fingered amongst you might now be asking, ‘I wonder what type he goes for?’ and to those people I say ‘Dunno’. Although I’ve started buying them, often in place of actual food at the supermarket, I don’t know what they’re called or really anything about how to properly look after them. I am the adult version of a child who wants a puppy for Christmas, but just for Christmas. But with plants. And it’s September. Solid gold analogy.
Feed me, Howard
Despite knowing nether their Latin nor Anglo-Saxon names, I have named them all. Leafy Leo, who sits proudly upon my kitchen counter, guarding the dishwasher, is the biggest. He should flower but doesn’t unfortunately. A friend told me this may be due to lack of light, but I’m sure it’s because Leo suffered a form of trauma as a sproutling. Y’see, I’m fully involved. The same friend also recommended I talk to my plants. Obviously, it’s weird to talk to a plant, one that isn’t Audrey

Horrors, but the carbon dioxide you’re blasting at them helps them
grow, or something. Which led to my experiment: half of my plants get a daily recounting of my day, what I did, what I’ve been thinking about, what I had for lunch, etc. The other half get a chapter of Orwell’s 1984 read out loud to them each night. I’m interested to see what difference it will have, and if half my house plants will become more socially aware.
thoughtcrimes (which is a thoughtcrime in itself). 18-month-old Fox likes them, at least. While holding him up to a plant, he pats the leaves carefully and strokes his face, baby-signing that he’s being gentle. He then demands to be walked to another, to do the same, gently touching the plants and stroking his face. Then another. Then another. Then back to the first. Then oh God, why did I start doing this? This interest in the plants is why all of mine are on higher levels. If they were in reach of the little chap they’d all be stroked into oblivion, while their soil would most probably be eaten or used to decorate my walls. He’s that kind of kid.

All that extra oxygen will be beneficial for my brain.
My kids don’t give a crap about my new-found passion. When I buy a new plant and find ‘just the right spot’ for it, I’ll enthusiastically point it out to them. ‘Look kids, a new plant. Do you like it?’ To which they typically respond, ‘Hmm. What’s for dinner?’ Still, they get very involved in the nightly book reading, and now have lots of questions about
As well as the general pleasing aesthetic of having leafy green things festooned around the flat, I’m also benefitting from the increase in oxygen. Plants make oxygen, which is jolly kind of them, allowing we humans to exist. With more plants around me, surely the more oxygen I’ll be getting. I used the cast-iron science I gleaned from theatre
Howard Mosley
degree to deduce that. All that extra oxygen will be beneficial for my brain, and I’m soon expecting to go all Scarlett Johansson in the film Lucy and become a better human. I’m quite sure I can already move things with my mind and I can hear my neighbour’s heartbeat through the wall. Heartbeat, or dripping tap. Either way, I’m definitely the next step in human evolution.
In conclusion
All in all, I give house plants a firm eight out of ten. I recommend them for people who like having living things around them, but who don’t want to have to clean up poo and who don’t want to have to experience the heartache of a beloved pet dying in tragic circumstances. Like a dog getting run over by a lorry right in front of you, while crossing the road with a stick in its mouth and it’s the dog’s birthday and all he wanted was for you to play with him but you were too busy with work. When plants die you just bin them and get on with your day. Actually, nine out of ten.

HAVE A HOME? THESE CUTIE PIES NEED ONE. ELLA This gorgeous girl is an unusual cross between a Shar Pei and Bedlington Terrier – and she’s such a friendly lady once she gets to know you. As she’s got a playful streak, she’ll need an equally active and playful family – who’ll take her on lots of walkies! Could that be you?
JOHNSON This gorgeous greyhound came into the centre as a stray – so his past’s a bit of a mystery. But what his carers at the centre do know about him is how calm, gentle and beautifully natured he is. All he needs now is his forever home, where he can be showered with love and helped to forget his past life.
n Visit www.rspca-yorkhome.org.uk or call 654949 SALMON There’s nothing fishy about this little beauty – she’s gorgeous and friendly and not at all like her finned namesake. Like most of us she’s shy when you first meet her, but she softens once she’s got to know you. Will you open your doors to a little Salmon?
KYLIE You should be so lucky to take home this gorgeous little furball. Kylie loves attention and just wants a second chance in life. If you like the idea of being a cat hairdresser then Kylie’s your girl – her gorgeous fur needs regular brushing!
n Visit www.cats.org.uk or call 760356 SPIKE Poor Spike has been in the UK after moving from Romania since April – and he still hasn’t found his forever home. As well as being very cute, seven-month-old Spike is very intelligent, and gets on well with other dogs – and cats! He does have a lot to learn however, and therefore would be best off in an experienced home with someone who’s experienced with dogs.

If you have a spare hour here and there, then offering a helping hand to charities and local services is a fantastic way of ‘doing your bit’. Maybe you want to give something back if you’ve received help from a charity in the past. Maybe you’d like to experience a new and unique working environment. Maybe you’d like to gain new skills or enhance your CV. Whatever the reason, volunteering offers so many rewards and benefits to everyone involved. Volunteering also gives you the opportunity to discover skills and abilities you didn’t know you had – and build on others. Always known you’ve
got a flair for history, but never had the chance to flaunt your knowledge? Perhaps you’ve got a knack for talking to people, or helping to reassure and comfort others in need? Ever thought to yourself: ‘I could do that’? Well, now you can. The good news is that if you’re feeling inspired and are ready to have a go at volunteering, there are lots of organisations in York that would love you on board. And with opportunities ranging from mentoring vulnerable children at The Island, to working in the healthcare sector with Healthwatch York; maybe one of them might just tickle your fancy.

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU
FACE TO FACE
While it’s important to take good care of your entire body, it’s easy to forget how much damage the skin on our faces can take on a daily basis. From fighting the elements of wind, rain and sun to acting as a blank canvas for multiple makeup products, our faces deserve a bit of TLC too. THE JET PEEL FACIAL A jet peel is simple, effective and painless skin rejuvenation, known as Hydradermabrasion. It’s a safe, deep exfoliating treatment that can give life to even the dullest skin. Designed to resurface the skin by eliminating the skin’s dead outer layer, Hydradermabrasion promotes the growth of health new cells and improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, congested and enlarged pores, oily skin, acne, hyper-pigmentation, brown spots, and stretch marks. Both men and women can have the treatment, and you can have it on the face, back area and neck décolletage. HOW IS HYDRADERMABRASION DONE? A wand-like device sprays saline at
supersonic speed all over the face to remove dead cells – leaving you with smooth, glowing skin. The treatment takes roughly 30-40 minutes and you won’t feel any pain – just an exfoliating sensation on your skin. You can also add oxygen therapy to your treatment, Hyaluronic acid for wrinkles and fine lines, Glycolic acid to treat acne and scars, and a range of vitamins. HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED? It’s up to you – you can have one or multiple treatments. It all depends on the results you want to achieve! If you’re wanting to reduce the appearance of fine lines or pigmentation then you might find you need more than one session. ARE THERE ANY RISKS OR SIDE EFFECTS? Hydradermabrasion is non-invasive, non-surgical and doesn’t pose any potential side effects or risks – other than potentially causing the skin to be a little bit pink for half an hour or so after treatment. That being said, someone with melanoma on the skin should not have microdermabrasion. You’ll be assessed by a qualified practitioner before the treatment takes place. RESULTS AND AFTER CARE Most people see and feel a result after just one treatment – but the more treatments you have, the more visable the results. You can continue with your activities after having treatment, and you’re able to reapply makeup if you choose to. However, a sunscreen product is advised
afterwards – and one of Skin Doctor’s qualified practitioners can help with this. SKIN CEUTICALS FACIALS The Skin Ceuticals facials on offer include: • Advanced City Radiance Facial – to revitalise and repair tired, dull skin as well as helping to prevent future damage. • Expert Detox Purifying Facial – to correct blemishes and soothe inflammation, rebalance irritated skin, and prevent future damage associated with break-outs. • Expert Skin Brightening Facial – to correct visible signs of hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tones. • Expert Hydration Booster Facial – to boost hydration in dry and tired-looking skin. Visible signs of ageing such as wrinkles and fine lines are plumped to create fresh and radiant looking skin. SKIN CEUTICALS PEELS • Expert Gel Peel Treatment – to exfoliate surface cells and hydrate the skin. • Expert Micropeel 20 Treatment – to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, visible skin imperfections and visible signs of photo damage. Expert Micropeel 30 Treatment also available. • Pigment Balancing Peel Treatment – to dramatically diminish the appearance of discolouration, while smoothing texture and refining the appearance of pores to restore a brighter, more clarified skin tone. ZO FACIALS • Invisapeel Resurfacing Treatment – to provide gentle exfoliation that revives dulllooking skin, replenishes skin moisture and
EXPERT
Dr Saleena Zimri promotes and more even skin tone. • Ossential Stimulator Treatment – to hydrate, restore and calm dry and dehydrated skin. • Offects Acne and Oil Control Treatment – to help clear skin and prevent blackheads. • Ossential Skin Brightening Treatment – to help address dark patches and uneven skin tone. Welcome, Lyndsey! To celebrate new therapist Lyndsey joining the Skin Doctor team, they’re offering 10% off any facial booked with her until 31st October. And with treatments starting at just £50, why not treat yourself?

Mr Hywel Williams, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in shoulders and elbows, is celebrating 20 years of caring for the people of York and surrounding areas. After joining York Hospital as a consultant in 1999, Mr Williams began working at Clifton Park Hospital in 2006 as one of their orthopaedic specialist surgeons. Heather Brett was a patient of Mr Williams, and recently visited Clifton Park Hospital for a follow up appointment – and her elbow replacement is still going strong 19 years after her surgery. Before Mr Williams worked his magic Heather couldn’t work, drive or carry her children without experiencing tremendous pain – and was told she needed elbow replacement surgery. Heather said: “The surgery enabled me to return to work for another 15 years, bring up my two daughters and live a happy, productive life. I can also now enjoy time with my grandchildren, which previously I thought wouldn’t be possible. “Mr Williams and his clinical staff were brilliant from start to finish. Everyone was so supportive, caring and informative.”
Mr Williams treats a wide range of conditions of the shoulder and elbow for private, insured and NHS patients. He has extensive experience in treating instability problems, rotator cuff pathology, and performing joint replacement surgery for arthritis of both the shoulder and elbow. Many conditions can be treated using keyhole surgery – and for conditions that do not require surgery, Mr Williams can arrange treatment through the highly qualified and experienced physiotherapy team at Clifton Park Hospital.
