BOO! By that we mean 'Boo! We're ghosties!' and not 'Boo! We hate you!' Because we totally don't hate you. One might say that we totally love you. All of you. And here's proof:
until there are knocks on the office door from trick-or-treaters, asking for sweets. We'll open the door, all bleary-eyed and tired, and ask for a trick, just to be awkward.
We love October, here at YLL; so much in fact that we'd love nothing better than to spend the entire month laying under trees as the leaves fall, carving pumpkins into the likenesses of celebrities, and quaffing hot chocolates while sitting around in our PJs. But we're not. And its all for you.
But October doesn't have to be like that for you, because with this copy of YLL in your soft, well-moisturised hands, you'll be able to plan your month like a military genius, selecting the best of the best events to go to, and by filling your knowledge bucket from our well of interestingness. There's a lot happening in York this month, and with us by our side, you won't miss a thing.
As lovely as a chilled out, wrappedup, chocolate-filled October sounds, it won't get the magazine done, dusted and dropped through your letterbox. Instead we've been toiling away, and probably will be right up

The story of Tommy Foggo is a sad one. After his mum abandons him at a bus stop, he has to live in a children’s home. However, after escaping one day to visit the seaside, things change when he meets Destino, a talking cello on a mission. Presented by international cellist, singer, and actor Matthew Sharp, and composed and written by Stephen Deazley and Martin Riley, this true story will be brought to musical life at the National Centre for Early Music on 15th October. Find out more at www.ncem.co.uk

YORK LIFE
and life in general AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG
The summer holidays did not give me much except for a bad wrist caused by too much house-painting and a sense of over-familiarity with my new best friends at Hazel Court Tip. However, they did confirm my suspicions that the world is divided into two types of people: those who turn up at the station just as their train is due to leave, and those who set up their sleeping bag at the station overnight for fear of missing it. I am firmly in the latter camp. And I had thought this was just a personal neurosis until I found myself reading W Somerset Maugham’s Ashenden, or: The British Agent. For it turns out that I am in fact suffering from that well-known condition Ashenden Syndrome. “Ashenden”, the narrator says, “suffered from that distressing malady known as train fever; an hour before his train was due he began to have
apprehensions lest he should miss it … he was not happy unless he was settled in his corner, his things on the rack above him, with a good halfhour to spare.” Ashenden Syndrome sets in the night before the journey (have I packed? Have I written a complete list of things that need to be packed on gulp - the morning of the journey, as
this point, regardless of how you’re planning to get to the station (it’s 8 AM and the train leaves at 11. I live a 20 minute walk away. Am I going to make it?)
“it’s 8 AM and the train leaves at 11. I live a 20 minute walk away. Am I going to make it?”
The real challenge for an Ashenden sufferer is having to travel with a non-Ashenden. As Maugham so rightly says: “if Ashenden was travelling with friends they would go to buy newspapers, or would take a walk along the platform, and he was certain they would be left behind, they would stop to talk to a casual stranger or suddenly be seized with a desire to telephone and disappear at a run”.
There is, of course, nothing more satisfying than to discover that your own shortcomings are in fact a recognised syndrome.
What’s more, the more you travel by train, the more marked the symptoms become. Travelling from York Station takes on a whole life of its own.
I can’t do without them overnight?) The morning is even worse. If you have ordered a taxi, this involves pacing up and down the hall for half an hour, coat on, clutching your bag. The hyperventilating bit starts at
Unfortunately, I am related to one of these. I nearly expired in the summer

What non-Ashendens don’t realise is all the things that can go wrong. What if the Number Four to the station doesn’t turn up on time, and you have to wait for a Coastliner, which might be stuck on the A64? What if you leave your bag of Things To Read On The Train at home and have to return for it? (I have done this). What if there’s a problem with the East Coast ticket machine or your credit card? Even Ashenden sufferers don’t always manage to get to the station to print out their tickets a fortnight
before their journey. The possible disasters are endless. What if you trip over your suitcase while walking to the station, and have to spend three hours in York Hospital A&E having your leg sewn back on? An Ashenden sufferer would allow for the latter possibility, and still be on the right train.
YORK LIFE
holidays when said relation rang me ten minutes before our train was due to leave, to tell me his bus had just arrived at Rougier Street.
Of course, most journeys to the station do pass off without mishap. Which means that rather than arriving in a flap, you can spend lots of money at the station in AMT and Filmore and Union, thereby cancelling out the saving you made by buying your ticket three years in advance. You also have the chance to read the whole of today’s newspaper (and yesterday’s, too) and most of the books in W. H. Smith before you have even got on the train, leaving you free to read the likes of Somerset Maugham at your leisure.
And as syndromes go, that could be a whole lot worse.

Dear
Got a problem? OF COURSE YOU HAVE. Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out.
Dear Daphne, I’m leaving my family home at the end of the year to move in with my boyfriend of 3 years. I’m 21 and we both have full time jobs. My parents are dreading it, have openly said they think it’s a bad idea and they don't want me to go. They don't think I’m responsible enough with money, and that I don't understand how much it costs to run a house. Whenever details are brought up we end up arguing, it doesn't feel like I can reason with them anymore. R, Wigginton.
FLYING THE NEST
My 15 year old son is stealing from me. I’ve noticed jewellery going missing, and even left cash out as a trap - it always disappears. I don't want to report my son to the police, and I'm avoiding confrontation because I think I will find it so upsetting. My husband thinks we should confront him and make sure he doesn't do it again, I’m just scared of the outcome. If he denies it, where do we go from there? S, Dringhouses
THIEF CLOSE TO HOME
When it gets to the point where your son is stealing from you, I have to wonder if it would actually be possible to discipline him in a way that would have an impact. This is a serious crossed line and you need to make sure he realises that what he has done is awful, not just illegal but highly upsetting for you. I recommend a family meeting. Sit him down with your husband and explain that you know what has been going on, and find out why he has been doing it. Where has the jewellery gone? He's not old enough to pawn it off himself, so there could be others involved. If he wants money to do things with his friends, he will have to get a part time job like the rest of functioning society. Make sure there is a clear penalty for what he has done, maybe a couple of weeks grounding, having to pay the money back through work in the home or a formal apology. This needs nipping in the bud, I hope you get to the bottom of this. Do not bury your head in the sand.
Prove them wrong. It sounds to me like you've got great parents who are truly worried about you flying the nest. That’s ok. Sometimes it might seem patronising or even down right insulting that they have little faith, but in time they will see that you're going to be ok. There’s no reason why you can't move out if you've both got full time jobs and can cover the costs of living. Be gentle with your parents - it sounds like they're much more nervous than you are about this, make an effort to explain you still want to see them lots and no matter how they feel, you are doing this, and that their support and guidance would be much more appreciated than their scare mongering. Good luck, and happy new home!
My boyfriend openly acknowledges other women’s attractiveness in front of me. It happens all the time when we’re out and he can be pretty crude with it. I usually agree with him and chuckle, but deep down it makes me feel rubbish about myself, he never offers me the same affirmation. Should I tell him and risk coming across as needy? Anon
WANDERING EYE
Yes, absolutely. He shouldn’t make you feel like you're being ‘needy’ either. It’s totally ok to ask him to tone down the crude comments, and offer you a little more

Hi Daphne, I feel like my fiancés mum will never accept me. He was assigned as ‘man of the house’ after his dad left at a young age and when he came to move out himself, his mum was openly resentful towards us. Since then I feel that she has always blamed me for everything and I will never be good enough as I 'took her boy away’. She can be quite rude and patronising towards me and interferes in our relationship. He always takes her side when I’m upset about something hurtful she has done towards me. On top of all this, we’re due to get married, and she has previously fallen out with members of my side of the family - I’m worried about big dramas at our wedding. We already have separate birthday parties for our children to make sure she feels involved. I try to not say anything as it's his mum at the end of the day, but I can't help but feel like I'm second best. What can I do?
MOTHER IN LAW PROBS
A classic case of evil mother-in-law. It sounds like her rude and patronising communications are done under a veil that means your husband-to-be doesn't see them. Don't forget, she's his mother, so she knows how to hide her opinions from him, all the while making sure you know she doesn't think you’re good enough, you devil woman, you. There’s no point trying to be friends with her, understand her frustrations that you’ve got the man of her house, but realise it’s not your fault and there’s little you can do to make her feel better about it. This realisation in itself should feel somewhat freeing. There’s no harm in throwing a couple of patronising comments back at her either, maybe then she might lose her cool and your fiancee will see that she’s not as much of a victim as she makes out. Good luck, get a thick skin for your wedding and reply in the most sickly sweet manner you can muster to any derogatory comments. The nicer you are to her the more rubbish she will feel. affirmation on a day to day basis. This sounds like a problem that can definitely be solved, as long as he is sympathetic to your perfectly valid and normal needs. The best time to deal with this is when he offends; the next time he makes a comment, mention that although you can acknowledge the lady across the road’s fabulous body shape, you would, in fact, like him to tone it down as it makes you feel a little bit rubbish about yourself. A chilled out reaction could make the world of difference. If he still does it after this, DUMP HIM. He is not worth it.

I wouldn’t describe your mood as being smug, exactly, but nevertheless, you should be feeling pretty pleased with yourself around this time! A number of problems and uncertainties will have been resolved in your favour, and you should be enjoying some bright feelings of freedom and fresh confidence. While this is true for every Libran, ladies of the sign between 30 and 45 should
be feeling these emotions in a particularly strong way. Travel aspects auger well, and although it’s a bit late for summer holidays, there will be a few nights spent in nice hotels; this coincides with some major boost in your social life, and although it may be a bit of a cliché, new friends and new faces give you a boost and provide some much needed laughter.
ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR
with jobs will need to be made around the 22nd, but overall the financial outlook is reasonably stable.
A quiet mood of determination helps you to focus on one issue at a time, and as such, a lot of niggling frustrations are resolved over the course of the month. Relationships seem stable but maybe you could do something to spice things up a bit, especially around the 14th or 15th when a little ripple of sexual excitement makes its presence felt.
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY Well, the summer has gone and here you are, battling into another winter. Despite the weight of SAD
your mood may well be brighter and more upbeat than usual. There are plans afoot, and things to look forward to! On a practical level, new banking routines should start working for you and will instil a new degree of confidence.
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUNE Many of September’s concerns carry on into October in the sense that while there is an exciting romantic energy for some, parents of teenage children may continue to feel a degree of concern for their offspring. Some awkward choices in connection
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL Some legal aspects or inner feelings of injustice begin to be mitigated and there is a new wave of energy filtering in from the 13th or 14th onwards. Health issues should be improving, with some good news coming your way during the third week. Finances improve towards the end of the month, and a sum of money that has been owed to you will now be paid.
LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG Hard work brings high reward! This philosophy can be applied to the business and professional aspects of your life and also to any romantic and sexual agendas. Property is an open subject for discussion and even overseas investments will be relevant for some. Financial security is the bedrock for emotional security, and progress will be made in both areas.

SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV This is one of those months when you seem to benefit from the best of both worlds. Romance and emotional relationships bring some extra quality of delight and excitement, while at the same time there is some change and improvement in all things connected with work and careers. I’ve been in marketing for a few decades now, and this week I’ve been blown away by perhaps the best ad I’ve ever seen. Go search for it, Heineken #OpenYourWorld
When I think back to great social times in my past, beer was often involved. Not in the modern manner of setting out to end the evening in A&E, more like 3 or 4 relaxed pints and great conversation with friends in a comfy part of a pub. Beer is a way of meeting people and getting closer, getting chance to talk.
Of course, it rests on truth. Heineken’s claim that these are real-life, non-actor participants had better turn out to be true.
What I like most is the depth of it. I sometimes meet prospects who think marketing is about coming up with the latest offer. Nope. That’s sales promotion. Marketers can do that of course, but it’s only a very small part of marketing (one chapter out of twenty in the standard textbook) and it could easily be argued that great marketing should remove the need for offers. Call me crazy, but I believe in marketing as a massive force for good in this world. My goodness do we need that right now! Marketing is two things: 1: noticing a problem you can help with, 2: organising yourself to solve that problem sustainably. If you believe, as I

The world is calving in two: people who believe in tolerance and diversity versus those who really don’t. Obviously Heineken’s marketing team know their own strengths and their own messages. What I’m most impressed by is how they seem to have looked around at the world, seen politicians’ popularity rising on themes of separation, judged that to be against what they stand for, and taken it on. That’s not selling beer. That’s standing for something bigger. I’m all for that. It was risky too. The Pepsi ad featuring

There are people who are less than happy with this ad and there are issues to raise (check out the book ‘Heineken in Africa’). If you stand for something of course you’re going to get called out for the things that aren’t right. I see that as the market giving you a helping hand. There’s the “marketing is about making money, this won’t” argument. Well, when I stand at a bar and make a choice, I may well choose Heineken now (and I really never would before) because I want the world they just stood for. These things change .. I can’t tell you how many Shell garages I drove past for Ken Saro-Wiwa, favouring BP until Deepwater Horizon. What we buy is the world we get.
Anyway, the point is we are not in business to make money. Money just allows us to be in business. We are here to make the change we want in the world. So .. what problems do you see that you are possibly uniquely positioned* to help fix? What do you want to change? * Your awareness of a problem probably means you are unusual in having the skill and awareness to do it better. (I have a process for this if you want to get in touch.) YORK BARRACKS
Right, you 'orrible lot... A-TEN-SHUN! This month we're pealing back the layers of history of Imphal Barracks, the army base in Fulford which hit headlines recently following the news that it is set to close for good. But, why is there even a huge great army base in little old York in first place?
MISE EN GARDE York's association with the military goes way back... right to the city's founding. The whole reason there is a city here, where two rivers meet, is because an army general thought it would make a great defensive position. And it did, and the Roman city of Eboracum flourished. However, the way in which York has been defended since has changed a lot, and despite always having a company of soldiers present in the city, mostly for policing, it wasn't until the late 18th century that we got our own dedicated barracks. And we have the French to thank for it. As a reaction to the French Revolution, Prime Minister William Pitt began a barracks building campaign in 1793, both to make sure Britain had
the troops in case of a filthy republican invasion from France, and as a way to keep the general populace busy and not thinking, 'hey, those French might have the right idea...'. York was selected to get a new barracks, and land off Fulford Road was purchased. By October 1795 the buildings were mostly up and troops from the Ancient British Fencibles had moved in. The 19 acre site included accommodation for the men, horses, and officers, as well as a nursery garden and training ground.
THE BUILDING OF IMPHAL Improvements where made to the site in the 1850s, such as the laying of a gas main, and also the construction of a new hospital on the opposite side of Fulford Road. The name Hospital Fields Road now makes a lot more sense, eh? However, if you wanted to take a tour of these barracks today, you can't, as the original buildings were all mostly demolished in the 1870s, with the site now being occupied by North Yorkshire Police. That is because, following the Cardwell Reforms of the 1860s, a new infantry barracks was constructed

a little further to the south. These barracks were supplied from the River Ouse via a narrow gauge railway; the remains of which can still be seen near to the Millennium Bridge. It is this site that we know today as Imphal Barracks, with the iconic red brick keep sitting right on Fulford Road. This new site was larger, and by 1884 there were upwards of 600 soldiers stationed there, as well as many cavalry horses. At that time there were eight Hussar, seven Dragoon, and 4 Lancer regiments, all ready for deployment. In fact, cavalry units were housed there well after you would think they still had tactical use, with a parade in 1939 bidding farewell to the horses and the welcoming of armoured cars; just in time for use during the Second World War.
IMPORTANCE It is because of World War Two that the barracks gained the name. At the Battle of Imphal in India, in which Japan was
Since then, importance of the base has waxed and waned, as the successive reorganisations of the armed forces has seen power transferred to other sites, and regiments come and go. In 2006 the newly formed Yorkshire Regiment celebrated their formation at Imphal, and the 6th Division was created there, tasked with preparing troops for combat in Afghanistan. However, in November 2016 it was announced that Imphal would be shut sown by 2031 as part of a massive shake-up of defence spending. Bases like Imphal (and also Queen Elizabeth II Barracks in Strensal) are to be sold and the funds reinvested in modernising the army.
YORK LIFE
forced back from invading the British occupied country (ironic, much?), the West Yorkshire Regiment, based in York, won a decisive victory. Following this, the regiment's base was renamed Imphal Barracks, and after the war it gained increased status when it became the home of the army's Northern Command in 1958.
BUT... That has been a controversial decision, because as well as ending York's centuries-old association with the military, it would also mean the loss of hundreds of civilian jobs. Property developers might already be eyeing up the site (no doubt the ultra-expensive apartments and town houses will be called the likes of 'The Barracks' and 'Horse guards'. Boo – be original), but Imphal will continue as an army base until 2031... and anything could happen between then and now. After all, we hardly live in peaceful and predictable times.

Microblading is the latest offering from the ever changing beauty industry and Karen Betts is an expert in the field. The semi permanent tattooing process is done in fine strokes with a hand tool with tiny microbladesl to create a natural looking brow. When I got the offer of a review I was nervous, it lasts for 12 - 18 months, and the concept of having my eyebrows tattooed felt scary. The clinic itself can be found in South Elmsall near Doncaster, parking is a little tight, but I swoop in on a space and head to the side door of the clinic. When I get inside it’s decorated immaculately, crushed velvet in neutral tones and a white, clinical feel reassures me. Karen arrives as I’m filling my form in, she greats me warmly and pulls out her camera for before and afters. I already have a reasonable amount of hair on my brows and tend to leave them naked for day to day, and draw them on boldly for nights out. As the numbing cream sets in, I mention this to Karen at the
consultation and show her a picture, she smiles: “I’ve got it”, within 5 minutes she’s drawn on an immaculate shape that suits my face and trimmed my natural brows ready for the microblading. She mixes pigments together to suit my natural colour, and warns me that the first few scratches, are the worst few scratches. The pain is totally bearable (if you're tough like me) it’s a light scratchy feel and after five minutes, I can't feel a thing and the only giveaway that I’m getting a tattoo is the gentle sound of the blade crossing my hairs. I keep my eyes shut throughout most of the procedure as I don't fancy seeing the blade, but I chat to Karen, and find out that she’s also the founder of HD Brows, that the Karen Betts clinic offers training in permanent cosmetics and there are also clinics in Cheshire and Harley Street. Before I know it, Karen has finished my new brows, and sits me up to double check that they're perfect. Spoiler alert: They are perfect. The initial colour is around 30% darker
than it will heal, but I love the shape and it makes me look like I’ve made an effort, despite having zero make-up on. Waking up with imaccualte brows has been liberating, it’s shaved minutes off my make up routine and I’m always pleasantly surprised when I look in the mirror. All that’s left now is my follow up appointment, people are advised to book 4-12 weeks after your first treatment to add more pigment to the brow area after healing.

throwing me to the sharks. Organic meat is fine, a drunk girl reassured me. Apparently organic slaughter houses are lovely, like cow heaven. You are met with disdain from omnivore’s and carnivore’s alike. The carnivore’s think it’s a waste of killing an animal and the omnivore’s think you're not going far enough if you still have milk in your brew. The dairy industry is just as bad they exclaim. The driving factor from both sides, in my humble opinion is guilt. When you really think about what we put animals through for a tasty dinner or a cool jacket, it starts to feel pretty grim. And as you become vegetarian you become hyper aware of all the things you own that are not vegetarian. I’ve got a stags skull on my wall for crying out loud, I’m a walking contradiction. I own a leather jacket. Where do I draw the line? We’ve normalised using animals for everything from fashion, to cosmetics, transport and food. So yep, one pre-loved leather jacket for sale, will accept offers.

This month I've joined the likes of Russel Brand, Arianna Grande and Anne Hathaway in being vegetarian. Today see’s my eleventh day meat free. It hasn't been without its tribulations, breaking the habit of a lifetime is no mean feat. Here’s one for you: Worcester sauce is not vegetarian. Licking a spoon absent mindedly after plating up your boyfriend’s beef chilli, also not vegetarian. That one was particularly embarrassing, I’d shouted over to mum that the chilli had a real kick to it, to which she replied, ‘What, the one with meat in it?’. The cogs turned slowly but surely. It wasn't long until I was over the bin spitting out the contents of my mouth. Never the less, I have persisted in kissing goodbye my beloved mayo chickens. *Stares into the distance as though talking about ‘the one who got away’. What I've found since becoming vegetarian is that people absolutely hate it. My parents generation are of the belief that you need meat to sustain you. But ‘what about the protein!?’ they cry, hoping its just a phase, like the pink streak in my hair when I was 17. My boyfriend has raised the fact that I am vegetarian on a night out, like Dr Evil

PAST TENSE Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.
I recently had need to return to my home town. My father had died (hey, I'm okay, thanks for asking {evades awkward hug}) so I needed to go and see my mum to sort out funeral arrangements. As I was passing through the delight that is Doncaster, I travelled by my old high school. Or rather, the empty field that was once my high school, now replaced by a modern and creepily named “academy” over the road. It was a bit of a shock to see the entire school site, both '20s Art Deco and '60s asbestos-filled prefab, completely erased from the landscape; a place in which I spent six difficult and emotional years prior to the liberation that was going to university in York. Obviously, I was feeling a bit glum anyway, what with my dad having died, but I stood
by the old gates (which now led to nowt) and swore.
%£$&!!! It was a colourful swearing session, one filled with harsh Anglo-Saxon, and one no doubt influenced by being in Doncaster. They have different, far better swear words in South Yorkshire. You see, I wasn't bothered by the fact that the school had gone – I'd imagined destroying it myself many times before – but rather by how old the change made me feel. I supposed that the kids attending the Tory training camp across the road (what I assume an academy school is) would have little comprehension or memory of the grim building that once occupied the site where they now hold their sports day.
If you read the monthly Time Travel feature you'll be aware of my interest in history and 'that which came before', evidenced by my love of including images of old maps, and overuse of the phrase “this building is now a Costa Coffee...”. However, when you're constantly looking back at what was, it is easy to forget that you're part of the continuum, and the writer of the future, who, in a century's time, will be looking up old maps of your house, office, and school, and reporting that “this building is now a Costa Coffee...”.

though; all he could do is complain to his cattle. Idiot. Similar changes are happening everywhere, of course, and York is no exception. This I was reminded of just the other day when using the new throughroad between Heworth Green and Layerthorpe; a road on the former site of the Gas Works, but for decades it was simply empty derelict land. I did some filming there in 2003, next to an old wall which was daubed with graffiti reading YANKS OUT OF VIETNAM, surrounded by the ruined remnants of the place's industrial past. There's a Costa Coffee there now. No Joke.

To be honest, it takes a lot of the pressure off. I'm not trying to bum you all out, and certainly not attempting to give a “remember you are dust”-like warning, but merely a polite reminder that there really isn't any difference between us, the people that came before, and those who will come in the future. Except they'll have even more places to drink coffee.

What we’ve learnt We quite like the idea of the army hanging around No, we've not decided this month that Martial Law is the only way and we need to round up all the politicians and sling 'em in prison (well...); what we mean is that we're sad to see that Imphal Barracks might be closing in the next 15 years. For this month's Time Travel feature we take a look back at the army base's history, from its origins as a reaction to the French Revolution, to more modern times and how its presence shaped the surrounding area.
this issue
There's cosy times ahead
With the October issue splatting onto your doormat, you can be certain that autumn is officially here. We're glad about the seasonal shift, as now is the time of year when you can don your fluffy mitts, not look weird drinking a hot chocolate in the middle of the day, and actually enjoy hugging someone without having to break before you sweat on each other. For added confirmation of the autumnal transition in this issue, see the return of Autumn Watch in the Gardening section, filled with pointers of what to look out for in your garden this month, and also a creepy Halloween-inspired Gardening Guide, filled with... well, to be honest, completely freaky stuff with which to terrify the neighbour's kids. Ah, autumn...
We need to prepare rselves ou We would pay four grand for a lamp Sure, you can fill your front lawn with plastic gravestones from Home Base, and squirt that 'spider web in a can' over your bay window, but you 'll never manage to top the creep fest that is York Maze. What, in the summer, is a baking-hot chance to get lost amongst the corn, York Maze transforms at Halloween into a chilly-cold chance to get scared by pumpkin-headed psychopaths wielding chainsaws! We're trying to prepare ourselves as much as possible this year, so that the frightening sights and costumed performers (we hope they're performers!) don't scare us all too much. To do that, we've been regularly leaping out at one another, with fresh Co-Op lasagne spread over our faces, screaming like banshees. We've become so good at it (one of the designers had to go home for the afternoon to calm down) that we're considering offering our services to the Maze when it reopens later in October. n Check our Events section for further clarification.

Seriously, we would; and you might want to, too. Flip to this month's Gadget Guide and you'll find details about the Floating Cloud Lamp; a lamp that looks like a cloud that actually floats. Like a cloud! Using magnets and all kind of technical trickery that goes waaay over our heads, the lamp can shine in several different colours, and slowly rotates, like a real cloud passing overhead. And it can be yours for a measly $4620! What is that in Queen's money, like eighty quid or something? No? Oh. Still, if we all chipped in 10p we'd be able to buy it and we would totally let you come and look at it whenever you want. Just not while we're working. Or sleeping. Or at lunch. ITS OURS, OKAY!?! n Turn to the Gadget Guide to see more technological wonders that you could buy. For us.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
Surely it can’t just be us who have been inspired by Strictly to strut our stuff on the dance floor? However, unlike us you might actually want to get some tips from the experts, and Dance Night are the ones to look to. Offering Ballroom and Latin dance classes from Dunnington Sports Hall, Dance Night gives you the chance to bust a move, learnt some new moves, and also make new friends. Beginners can go along on the first Monday of each month, 7-8.30pm, to get a feel for it. n Interested? Twirl over to the phone and call 07914941268, or email jackie@dancenigth.co.uk
GOING PLACES Are you a qualified nurse or paramedic looking for a new adventure? The Yorkshire Group of The Jumbulance Trust, who take sick and disabled children and adults on holiday in specially converted coaches across the UK and Europe, need your help. They would like a medical professional to volunteer some of their time to accompany a party as it takes to the road in one of their ‘Jumbulances’. A great service, they help people who could not normally travel without medical assistance to see the world. n If you’re keen to learn more, contact Valerie Readman on 07977505269 or val@ valreadman.plus.com

GETTING JIGGY WITH IT Looking for a fun and active pastime based around dancing, but don’t have a partner to take along with you? Worry not, because York Ceilidh Club are always looking for new members to join them, and joining in is as simple as following the moves as they’re called. They perform a wide variety of dances, from folk to barn, and everything in-between. However, the emphasis will always be on having fun with friends both old and new. They meet on the second Sunday of each month at St Aelred’s Church Hall, Fifth Avenue, 7.30-10pm, so the next meet is 8th October. n To find out more, call 624216 or visit www. yorkceilidhclub.org.uk
LOVE MUSIC... ...but feel you might not quite be up for all-night jam session any more? If you’re older, and would love nothing better than to make some great sounds (yet have no musical training or experience), you need to make a musical connection. Musical Connections holds weekly music and singing groups, where you can get together with friends both old and new, and have a great time having fun. Always relaxed, the group meets in several locations across the city each week, so there is bound to be a session near to you. n To find out more, call 373011, or email enquiries@ musicalconnections.org.uk

ON THE BALL If you are, or if you know of, a football-mad girl under the age of 14 with a passion for teamwork and fun... this has been written just for you. That is because Rawcliffe U14 Girls are looking to strengthen their squad with a few new players. The current City of York league champions are most keen to recruit some skilled midfielders and defenders for their matches, which are held on Saturday mornings. Training is Thursday evenings at Shipton, moving to Vale of York Academy School over the winter months. If that sounds right up your sporting alley, contact Stuart Watson on 07581 252083, and remember it was us that gave you the tip. You know, once you’re a millionaire football pro.
WERE YOU AT SHIPTON STREET SCHOOL? If so, particularly if you were a teacher at the former school in Clifton, we know of a group of people who would like to hear from you. In August a group of ex-pupils and staff met for a reunion – one attended by Rachel Maskell MP and local TV. That meeting began a local history project to record the memories of people involved with the school, and the neighbourhood around it. If you attended or worked at the school, or if you once lived near to it, they would love to hear from you. n Contact Kay Watkins at kay.watkins10@yahoo.com

Your city, your say... Congratulations, you live in York. Yes, we're all very fortunate to be able to daily gaze upon the splendour of the ancient walls, the Minster, and that bloke who paints himself purple, but we're lucky in many other ways, too. Namely, that City of York Council are keen to get your input about the future use of land in and around the city. Delivered along with this issue of Your Local Link is the Council's Our City publication, explaining about York's Local Plan which sets out how land can and should be used and developed in the future. The Local Plan is being updated, so your input is needed right now to make sure CYC councillors know exactly how you feel.
You can already view the prepublication version of the new Local Plan online at www.york.gov.uk/ localplan, or view a copy at the Council's headquarters on Station Rise, or a library. It will give you a good idea of what plans are being suggested for future land development, so be sure to have a read to see if anything effects you. If so, or if you have an idea or suggestion, speak up. There will also be public consultation meetings taking place throughout October, giving you another chance to have your voice heard. The city is growing, so make sure you're involved. n Check out your copy of Our City, and find out more by calling 551550.

Fortunately we know a great bunch who do. IT 4 Home are the PC and Mac experts (a great new part of We R Your IT’s business), visiting you at home to fix your device, no matter what the issue may be. If they cannot fix it at your home they will take it away and return it when sorted. Microsoft certified engineers, they can help with servicing and computer health checks, data recovery, and home broadband issues. They are a Dell approved centre, and will make your repair as quick as possible... to get you back on Twitter in no time. n To find out more, and to book your call out, call 03303 800 100, or visit www.it4home.co.uk

League North glory. It’s still taking me some time to get used to our new surroundings in regionalised football,
from beating Bradford Park Avenue in what felt like someone’s back garden, to hoping Harrogate Town slip up. Not to mention my personal favourite this season: a chance conversation with some FC United of Manchester supporters after they had beaten us 2-0 in August saying, “I can’t believe we won, we are really rubbish”. What a confidence booster. I guess it says something that I was gutted I was going to miss Dr Foster and Bake Off as York were playing Gainsborough Trinity on the same night, but I guess you support through thick and thin. Always looking for positives, this time last year I was writing about that 6-1
TALKIN' 'BOUT MONEY... Last month I bemoaned the money in football and how the game has gone mad with all the finance, yet this week Crystal Palace continued the ‘mad’ part by dismissing manager Frank De Boer after just four games in charge. After a 1-0 loss to Burnley, who had ex York City loanee Nick Pope in goal playing a blinder, Palace chairman

Steve Parish tweeted “its times like this we need to stick together”, then sacked his manager less than 24 hours later. Arguably more bizarre, they appointed fallen England Manager Roy Hodgson as his replacement; a man who is most famous for his last game in charge which was that infamous humiliating defeat to Iceland. Speaking
of England, a laboured win over Malta seemed to aggravate many fans, with one person harshly claiming Wayne Rooney had more shots on his way home than England had in the first half. It was also unconfirmed that the pitch invader was made to come back in to watch the end of the game.
defeat away to Guiseley! October fixtures see early season surprise package side Brackley Town arrive at Bootham Crescent on Saturday 7th with the only other home league game being Tamworth’s arrival on Saturday 28th. There could be the small matter of an FA Cup match; the 4th Qualifying Round scheduled for Saturday 14th, providing York can navigate through two earlier rounds. Ever the optimist, Gary Mills has targeted the Third Round proper. I think he may have mellowed as in his first spell I am sure he said he thought we could win it.

BALLS Onto cricket now and I was one of the lucky few to get tickets for the TMS 60th Anniversary game between Geoffrey Boycott and Jonathan Agnew, led by captains Phil Tufnell and Michael Vaughan who picked teams through rhubarbs at Leeds University. The match was a mixture of good and bad cricket, and good and bad jokes in equal measure, as the likes of Graeme Swann facing the might of news reader

Dom Joly played up his abilities by saying “I was good at school, played a little bit at University and had a 30 year break but it’s been a good rest”. To be fair he hit a six in the second over but his side ultimately lost the T20.

of the data, essentially it seems as if, for all the tech in other parts of our lives, giving over the control of a car to a computer is still something many people are reticent about. We'll see how that changes over the next ten years or so.
drivers to look twice whenever they pull out onto a junction; the place most SMIDSY crashes occur. As bikers can merge into the background, especially while coming toward you in a car, be sure to make absolute certain you're clear to go while pulling out... or you might get something a little less polite than 'Sorry mate' coming back at you.
KIT CAR
SM ID SY TO YO U , TO O !
DO SELF-DRIVING CARS SCARE YOU? According to research carried out by technology company Intel, yes, they do. With more and more car companies creating autonomous cars, there is a good chance that at some time in the near future, the roads will be full of vehicles that are driving themselves. Intel quizzed a group of people who had no experience of self-driving cars to see what they were concerned about, as they themselves have just invested more than $15 billion in the technology. The survey revealed things that you too may be concerned about with regards to autonomous cars, like NOBODY IS DRIVING! ARGH! Although that is a very simple summation
Drivers up and down the country are being urged to take a second look when pulling out onto junctions, as part of a new SMIDSY crash campaign. A what? Well, a SMIDSY crash is usually where a car driver accidentally hits a motorcyclist because they didn't see them. Often the first words out of their mouth (after the swearing subsides), is: Sorry Mate, I Didn't See You. To cut down on the number of collisions involving motorbikes, Police are asking
Dream of owning your own Ferrari? Also keen to one day build your own kit car? Why not combine those two passions and go and visit LEGO in Denmark? The brick-building toy company recently created a life-sized model of a Ferrari SF70H racing car, using more than 350,000 LEGO parts, all assembled by hand. Interestingly, despite being made only from plastic, the model weighs nearly as much as the high performance car, at 1200lbs, compared to the real thing at 1600lbs. Still, the LEGO version can't actually drive anywhere, but then again you can't dismantle a real Ferrari and rebuild it as a spaceship, spaceship, SPACESHIP! Oh, and if you think this kind of thing is just what LEGO employees do on their lunch hour, the project actually took 850 hours to plan and design, and a further 750 hours for the team of six to build. And you thought that model of the Millennium Falcon last Christmas morning was time consuming.

HIMALAYAN SALT LAMPS
This week I stumbled across a great article on Zoopla’s blog written by property guru Phil Spencer entitled ‘8 steps to be in your next home by Christmas’
Mined from the Himalayan salt mines, these gorgeous lamps are simply large salt rocks, which are then drilled into, to allow for a heat and light source to go in the centre. Not only do they give off a calming, ambient light, but they are said to have positive health benefits due to the negative ions they produce when warm. Negative ions can increase oxygen flow to the brain according to Pierce J. Howard, PhD.
I’ve picked my top three tips.
Prices range from £5 for a bag of salts - £20 for a lamp. Yorkies can get the lamps for £17 if they are willing to pick up locally. Visit www.nrghealing.co.uk to find out more.
Use the time now to embark on a big ‘clutter clear out’ – from the loft through to the kitchen cupboards. And when you’ve freed up some space, consider giving tired walls and ceilings a fresh lick of paint in neutral colours to attract potential buyers.
1. Use an agent that’s signed up to the major property portals These days, around 90% of all property searches start online. With this in mind, if you are trying to sell your home quickly, you’ll need to ensure the estate agent you appoint markets their properties with the major portals – namely Rightmove, Zoopla and PrimeLocation. In addition to this it’s also really important that your agent has an amazingly designed and easy to navigate website that buyers can book viewings directly. 2. Get your home 100% sale-ready There are many aspects of the home buying and selling process that you can’t control – which is why it becomes especially important to take charge of the ones you can.
Check out last months article for the perfect example. 3. Make sure the price is right

It’s a good idea to get two or three local estate agents to provide valuations on your property. Local being the all important word here. An agent that knows your immediate area can provide accurate market insights. A top tip is to ask an agent about their recent experiences when selling properties near yours ; what price did they achieve and how long did it take to find a buyer. A great estate agent will be able to provide you with specific examples right away. Don’t just immediately head for the agent who gives you the highest price. If you want your home to sell soon, it will need to be priced according to the current local market without out-pricing yourself versus other properties on the market near you. So, three top tips to help get you moved by the time the turkey is on the table! If you’re hoping to be moved by Christmas and would like to find out how we can help that dream come true one of our local property experts will be more than happy to provide a free, no obligation property appraisal.

Many of you will have recently returned from holiday, and not only have memories of beautiful sunshine and beaches, but also of the lovely powerful showers you experienced in the hotel. If you've wondered why your shower at home isn’t like that – it all comes down to pressure! UNDER PRESSURE...
Before we even start looking at showers, we need to know what type of water system and what the pressure is in your house. This information is going to affect your options and, in some cases, may rule out some showers altogether. If you have a gravity system which consists of a separate boiler, cylinder and water storage tank, a rule of thumb says this is a low-pressure system – in this instance we may need to look at an electric shower or a separate pump, but either of these two options could mean additional works. A combi-boiler or unvented cylinder would usually mean a high-
pressure system, which means the world is your oyster.
IN THE WORKS At JDL we will give you options and tell you if your dream shower is achievable. On another note, we are always looking at ways to advise people on their latest projects. With this in mind, we have decided to stand at the Harrogate Homebuilding and Renovating Show at the Harrogate Conference Centre, 3rd5th November. We have 20 pairs of free tickets to give away – just call us on 01904 608350 or email enquiries@jdl.co.uk with details of your project, and we will send you your tickets (strictly first come first served). There will even be the chance to win a bathroom and get your hands on a JDL Duck – what more could you want?
We’ve all suffered from WiFi black spots in our homes and it’s fair to say that my installers now see this as one of the major challenges of installing a smart TV or smart product in general. As a result of this we have come up with a tool bag of products to help tame a badly behaved home WiFi network.
HOOKED UP The most stable means of getting a
YOUR HOME & GARDEN
We all love WiFi. By allowing easy access t’internet (as we Yorkshire folk call it), it makes short work of connecting us to online content on the move, or without cords in our own homes. In fact, the WiFi code is usually the first thing my children ask for at a restaurant; even before the sugary drinks! But, like a lot of today’s techie stuff, it’s only great when it works.
network connection around your home is using good old copper wire. However, often this is not the preferred solution due to the possible disruption and cost involved. If that is the case then we have other products that can help. The first of which is a plug in product that uses your homes 240v mains cabling to create a new network. This should not affect either the mains electricity or the data stream you are extending, but will give you a quick way of bridging the gap between your existing WiFi coverage and a new area you need to get WiFi into. If the power line extenders do not work (usually due to the set-up of the power circuits in the house) then the other solution is to simply extend the coverage area by using a plug in WiFi extender. These products act like a go-between, taking wireless messages from your smart device and passing them on to the router and vice versa. With minimal configuration these should again work out more cost effective than installing new cabling. n If you need help with your wayward WiFi, please give us a call on 628676.

What we say: Featuring sassy slogans such as: ‘Dream Slayer’ and ‘Goal Digger,’ the polite reminder that we have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyonce is a little daunting though. Things to look out for in the garden this month You might see a fox or two in urban areas at night this month, as they start to forage further for food. Other animals will start to hibernate during October, and you should see squirrels dashing around building up their nut stores. You might also discover a hedgehog bedding down in any piles of fallen leaves, so take care when tidying the garden (and building bonfires next month!). If you want to encourage animals to hibernate in your garden, a wooden box buried in leaves will temp hedgehogs, while corrugated metal or plastic laid on soil will help reptiles and small mammals. Make sure your birdbath is regularly cleaned and topped up, and if it gets cold early this year, try to prevent the water from freezing. Also, hold back on trimming any mature ivy you have growing, as it flowers late in the season and is an excellent source of nectar for insects – especially butterflies. Oh, and don't forget to keep those bird-feeders well stocked. Our feathered friends will thank you.
FUNGI FORAY 1st October Can I eat it? Go on a walk looking for fungi in the nature reserve and learn more about them. Followed by refreshments. Free entry, donations welcome and booking recommended.
NIGHT-TIME WILDLIFE SAFARI If you've seen our Poppleton Treasure Hunt in this issue, perhaps you should save following the clues until 7th October. If you do, you'll also be able to swing by Poppleton Community Railway Nursery for their Autumn Open Day, 10am-3pm. Look around the unique and historic railway buildings, greenhouses, and nursery, and purchase bedding plants, shrubs, herbs, alpines and perennials. Oh, and tea, coffee and home-made cakes! n Visit www.poppletonrailwaynursery.co.uk

GUIDE
We can’t confirm the existence of ghosts, but we are sure that your garden will be visited by tiny ghouls this month... demanding sweets. Here are some ideas to spookify your garden this Halloween.
SHAKING UPSIDE DOWN DUNGAREE REAPER Yep, that is the actual name of the product. This is basically a zombie that hangs upside from a tree or porch, and that shakes and quivers. Not just suitable for Halloween, this could be left up until Christmas with the addition of a Santa hat. Merry Christmas, kiddies. n £39.84 from www.thelaughingstock.co.uk
BURIED ALIVE BLINKING SKELETON GARDEN STAKES Nothing says 'welcome kids' like a skeleton crawling out of the ground with red glowing eyes. You can arrange it anywhere in the garden you like as all the parts have their own stakes. Joy. n £14.99 from www.lights4fun.co.uk
DESIGN TOSCANO THE RAVEN'S PERCH WALL SCULPTURE The neighbours might have inflatable bats sellotaped to their front door, but you're a bit fancier than that, aren't you? This crushed stone sculpture is hand-painted and depicts a “classy” raven perching on a twig. Quoth the raven, NEVERMORE! n £28.99 from www.amazon.co.uk
ROTTEN COFFIN This life-size coffin, complete with dangling skeletal arm, would look great perched up on your front lawn, or laid out as a “fun” snack table for your party. And, after Halloween, if granny is old and unwell... just saying. n £98.95 from www.karnival-house.co.uk

Heucheras Most are low, mounding plants. They increase in size from year to year but are slow to multiply. Their leaf structure can be rounded or lobed. Many leaves are toothed, which gives them even more interest and texture. What’s more, they are evergreen in most parts of the country, green in this case denoting staying power, not colour. Heucheras, commonly known as Coral Bells, were once a common addition to gardens with very little to offer aside from small spikes of flowers above tidy round green foliage. Over the years breeders have made new and exciting varieties with many different leaf colours ranging from purple to pink/ peach, and from lime green to copper;
many with different coloured veins running through the leaf.
Varieties One of the first to burst onto the landscape was Heuchera micrantha var. diversifolia ‘Palace Purple’. Its large purple metallic leaves are reminiscent of maple leaves. It is still easily found and very popular in shady gardens. More dark leaves have come along for those of us still in our purpleblack phase. Heuchera ‘Obsidian’ was the darkest black until Heuchera ‘Blackout’ came along. Obsidian has lustrous purplish-black leaves whilst Blackout is nearly jet-black and very glossy. It is always good to play off a dark leaved variety with a light tone,
otherwise the dark is lost in the shadows. Heuchera ‘Pistache’, a bright lime green or Heuchera ‘Citronelle’, a sunny yellow or even Hecuhera ‘Earth Angel’, a small copper leaved variety with dark veins would all push the dark leaf colours.
Colours Heucheras ‘Marmalade’, ‘Peach Flambé’, ‘Green Spice’, ‘Chocolate Ruffles’, ‘Plum Pudding’, ‘Tiramisu’, ‘Mocha’, and ‘Caramel’ all conjure up delightful images of yummy desserts. Then there are the fine wine Heucheras: ‘Pinot Noir’, ‘Pino Gris’, ‘Beaujolais’, and ‘Sparkling Burgundy’. Heucheras grow best in part shade. In hotter areas the shade should come in the mid-day. Moist, well-draining soil, a little on the alkaline side, grows them best. If your soil is acid, add some lime every year to the planting bed and work it into the soil.

Heucheras tend to grow a woody centre above ground as they age, mulch them every year to cover the build-up. When the Heuchera leaves are getting sparse, most likely every 4-5 years or so, you will need to rejuvenate them. In early autumn, dig up the mound and plant it deeper, with most of the woody centre below ground. Be sure to keep the crown above the soil surface. The crown is where all of the leaves emerge from the centre of the plant. Be sure soil does not cover this area or you will probably lose your plant. To conclude Heucheras are a fantastic addition to any size of garden in virtually any aspect. They can be used as a front of the border plant, planted in a container on its own or accompanied with other plants in a planted arrangement. They are easy to grow and offer interest all year; every garden should have a Heuchera in it somewhere.

Q.
I have grown primroses in pots from the spring, but recently they have turned yellow and died. I have removed the soil and found a few cream coloured grubs. Any idea what this is? As these grubs are in the compost of a primrose, it is most probably a vine weevil grub. It thrives on the roots of fleshy plants like cyclamen, begonias, primroses, heucheras, and saxifrages. Legless, creamy white larvae with brown heads feed on the roots, corns and tubers of many plants. They are about 10mm long and look like miniature chafer larvae. They are especially troublesome in pot plants and container-grown plants, but also affect plants growing outdoors in borders and rock gardens. Destruction of roots by larvae checks growth and may cause sudden wilting and the collapse of shoots and leaves. Adult vine weevils are seldom seen since they are mainly nocturnal and hide during the day. Their presence is generally indicated by irregular notches and holes eaten out of leaves. Camellias, rhododendrons viburnums, and photinas are most susceptible to this damage. Chemical products are available to gardeners and should be applied over a few months for the best results. Also available is a biological control
treatment: nematodes. They search for vine weevil larvae and enter their bodies. Once inside, the nematodes release pathogenic bacteria from their gut which kill the larvae within a couple of days. Treatment is most effective when applied in late August and early September when the population of vine weevil is at a maximum. Treatment at this time will limit the damage sustained during winter and the following spring. Best of luck.

Please could you give me some advice on the planting of window boxes, planters, and hanging baskets, using different coloured foliages and nice flowering plants that are winter hardy.
the centre outwards. Sage comes in different leaf colours and looks nice, and other small shrubs that will look good include choisya ‘sundance’, hebe James StIrling pinguifolia, rakaiensis, red edge and greenglobe. Good trailing plants for softening the edges of the planters, boxes, and baskets are ajuga ‘burgundy glow’, and hedera ‘ivy’. Oregano creeps softly with its dark green foliage, while thyme is also useful with lots of colour, plus the scent is wonderful. Finally, veronica ‘Georgia blue’ has beautiful blue flowers that open in late winter. Between all of these plants you can add winterflowering pansies, violas, and primroses for colour. Also, try using a colourful planter for even more visual wow, but just make sure you have some fun.
For window boxes and planters you should start by changing your compost from the summer, as all the plant food that was in the soil would have been used up by now. Start in the centre of your planter with a tall plant, perhaps a dwarf conifer such as cupressus goldcrest ‘Wilma’, chamaecyparis ‘Ellwoodii’, or skimmia ‘Rubella’. The next plants should be lower in height and placed in triangles from

YOUR HOME & GARDEN
KEEPING YOUR ROOTS TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS. If you grow root vegetables in any quantity, one of the dilemmas as autumn draws on is how to keep them for use through the winter. Should you leave them in the ground and hope that frost, wet and slugs won’t take their toll? Or should you lift them to store safely from winter’s ravages? I grow most of the usual root vegetables. ‘Roots’ can mean different things to different people, but to me it’s those crops where the edible part is either entirely or partially underground. Those I grow, in rough order of importance and quantity, are: potatoes, carrots, beetroot, parsnips, celeriac, turnips, and Jerusalem artichokes.
KEEP IT COOL When it comes to keeping through the winter, potatoes are the easiest. Cool, dry and dark are the watchwords, so placing in a sack and storing in a frost and rodent free shed or garage should see them keep for months. Other root veg, however,
will shrivel if stored in this way. Some, especially beetroot, will last for quite some time, but all will eventually start to dry out and become unappetising. Of course, freezing is always and option, but you need cavernous freezer capacity if you grow roots in quantity and I prefer to save space for choicer crops such as berries. Another option, used extensively in the past, is to store root vegetables in boxes of sand or peat. Clamping is another, now seldom used, technique.
NICE TO PEAT YOU When I first begun growing root crops I tried storing carrots, beetroot and turnips in boxes between layers of sand and, occasionally, peat (this was before the environmental impact of horticultural peat use was fully appreciated). Overall the results were disappointing. The roots would tend to desiccate if the sand or peat was a touch dry but show signs of rotting if there was too much dampness. Even worse, the taste after a few months in store was bland. All freshness and flavour had gone. The cardboard boxes containing the roots would have been just as tasty. Perhaps I was using the wrong techniques, but these experiences have led me to prefer keeping root veg in the ground through the winter and
digging fresh as required. For two of the crops, parsnips and Jerusalem artichokes, this is in any case the practice of most gardeners, as both are hardy, able to resist all but the most severe frost.
WHEN NEEDED The other roots are trickier as all can be damaged by extreme cold as well as being vulnerable to slug and rodent damage. Covering with a thick layer of straw or a similar insulating material is sometimes advocated, but I find this provides a slug haven. Instead I leave carrots undug, given some protection by the fleece used to fend off carrot fly (more on this pest another time). The other roots are all left unprotected in the ground. Beetroot are probably the most vulnerable to cold so I do aim to use most of these by Christmas. With the run of mild winters we’ve experienced, keeping your roots in the ground seems more viable than ever. What’s more it’s less trouble and gives tastier and fresher veg – don’t dig them out, dig when needed. n For further information see www. yorkorganicgardenersassociation.org.uk.

Sarah has something to say. Just keep it to yourself, will you? ALL GONE WRONG Yes, it's Halloween this month, and to be honest I have mixed feelings about it. Sure, its lovely to see the kids get excited and dress up in costumes to go trick-or-treating, but there is something about the holiday that brings out the worst in people: especially pranksters. I lost count of the number of times my kids scared, fooled, or pranked me at Halloween, and although I hated it (HATED IT!) at least nobody ever got hurt, nor was there need to call armed police. Unlike...

punch both Slattery and his housemate, fighting his way out of the premises. Slattery later had to issue an apology... but to this day hasn’t taken down the video from YouTube. Idiot.
CLOWNING AROUND
NOT WORTH THE SUBSCRIBERS
Remember that awful scary clown thing from last year, when people
In 2015, Irish YouTube prankster James Slattery thought he’d gain some Halloween night views by calling for a plumber. While the unsuspecting workman was fixing a leaky tap in the bathroom, Slattery enters in a mask and pretends to murder his housemate with a chainsaw, complete with flying fake blood. All caught on camera, the plumber almost faints with horror, before Slattery pulls off the mask to reveal it all a joke. BUT, the plumber doesn’t find it funny and proceeds to
were dressing up like killer clowns and scaring people, often with very real weapons? Well, one of my favourite incidents of clown-prankgone-wrong caught on camera happened right here in the UK, when a London-based would-be clown prankster leapt out at people at a bus stop. Caught on camera, all the people at the bus stop scatter when they see the masked figure... except one man, who grabs
the prankster around the neck. In the video we can hear the annoyed man asked “What’s wrong with you?” followed by, “wait here.” Weirdly, the unmasked clown does indeed wait, only to see the man return with a bottle of wine... and promptly smash it over the clown’s head. Scary clowns and bottle-weilding vigilantes – two reasons I steer clear of London.
HANGING AROUND Again, in the States, police and fire engines were called to a house in North Carolina after a figure was sighted dangling from the guttering of the upper story of a house. The emergencies services arrived to find that the man, instead of having the strongest grip of any human, was actually a very life-like dummy. Apparently it had been placed there by the home owner as a Halloween joke, despite not being at all Halloween-y. What a dummy.
Shouldn’t really laugh at this one, but... Montana’s Randy Lee Tenley thought he’d have fun by dressing up as the elusive Sasquatch creature and jumping out at passers-by and cars as they made their way down a secluded road. But, although Randy scared many people one night, he wasn’t counting on the teenagers who, after being frightened by the hairy figure before them on the road, ran him over, killing Randy instantly. Come on, I said don’t laugh...
AND FROM A TEACHER!?! A few years ago in Massachusetts, US, a couple of high school teachers thought they would scare their students at Halloween. After there was a knock on the classroom door, and after being instructed to see who it was by his teacher, a 15 year old pupil was greeted by the sight of a masked man wielding a real chainsaw. The boy was so terrified (because, y'know, American high school murders and all that) he darted away, tripped, and shattered his knee. The masked man was actually the other teacher, and the boy ended up with $100,000 following a law suit. Fair enough.

CARE AND CARE ALIKE Bits and bobs for those who care for someone
LIFTING SOMEONE YOU CARE FOR If you care for a person who has a disability or illness which impedes their movements, you might have to regularly help them get about. A common complaint from carers is that they can often suffer from back injuries, especially if they are helping to lift a person, either following a fall, or in and out of bed. That is why it is very important to remember a few helpful hints, provided by the NHS. BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO MOVE SOMEONE, ASK YOURSELF: • Do they need help to move? • Have you told them you're moving them? • How heavy are they? • Are you healthy and strong enough to move them alone? • Is there enough space around you? AS YOU LIFT, MAKE SURE YOU: • Never lift above shoulder height • Make sure your feet are stable • Keep any weight close to your body • Keep your back straight and bend your knees • Lift as smoothly as possible

ASK THE EXPERT
SPOT THE DIFFERENCE This month resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, talks about keeping pimples at bay and how acne isn’t an exclusively teenage problem. Unfortunately for us, acne isn’t something that disappears when we reach adulthood. It’s a common misconception that acne is something that only affects teenagers. Acne is non-discriminatory; it can affect anyone regardless of gender, age or ethnicity.
Clearing acne isn’t always straight forward; you may still find dark spots on your face or even textured areas where the surface of your skin has changed. These are acne scars and post acne marks. There are lots of things you can do to combat the after affects:
All blemishes and acne start the same way: inside a hair follicle which results in the clogging of the pore. The follicle, for an unknown reason that could be related to hormones, stress or even diet, overproduces skin cells, which ultimately clog the pore.
A peel is an exfoliation stimulated by a chemical solution. It is a safe and common practice. And can be extremely helpful when treating scars.
Here at skin doctor we have a range of services that can help you combat the nasty outbreaks. The Harmony XL Laser uses blue light to destroy acne causing bacteria P.acnes, shrink sebaceous glands and reduce pore size. The treatments only take a few minutes and are completely pain free. Eight treatments in four weeks can help to clear your acne by 80% - 90%. We also offer Medical peels for acne and acne scarring such as the Obagi Blue Radiance which has active ingredients such as salicylic acid which is oil soluble and reaches the pores to really clean them out and improve your overall complexion. Every spot begins with a comedone and salicylic acid tackles this so treating acne at the origin. It removes
comedones, deep cleanses pores and provides an anti-bacterial action. We also offer Oxygen microdermabrasion acting as an exfoliation and deep cleanse for the pores and skin. As with any course of treatments it is always just as important to include a homecare routine. Our ZO Skincare range by Dr. Zein Obagi offers a tailored program which is prescribed by our Doctors or Aesthetic specialists. The program is designed to prevent the reoccurrence of persistent skin problems and keep skin strong and healthy while looking and acting more youthful. We also offer BiRetix. A 6 month program which includes everything you need to target spot prone skin. The BiRetix kit is clinically proven to tackle spot prone skin leaving it clearer with significantly fewer comedones, blemishes and redness.
Dermapen micro-needling works by puncturing the outermost layers of your skin to create tiny pin prick injuries. These microscopic wounds will stimulate new collagen deposition until indented scars and deep lines are filled. Similar to micro-needling but with laser we also offer Pixel - Pixel laser is a fractional resurfacing laser that creates small microscopic wounds within the skin that heal and stimulate new collagen production that in turn tightens and smooths out the skin’s surface. Skin doctor clinics, Offering a wide variety of ZO Medical, Skinceutucals and Murad products and with treatments ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly caring service.
