surely not... It can’t be, can it? It isn’t September already, is it? We all distinctly remember looking forward to the start of the summer, and that was only... (silently calculates the date en masse) OH NO, IT IS SEPTEMBER! Where did the year go? Did someone leave the time drain unplugged, as several months have just slipped down it, never to be seen again. Woe are we! Deep breath. Sorry about that; we’re okay now. As shockingly fast as this year is moving, we are all actually very happy that the summer has ended and autumn’s leafy paws are beginning to grip our hearts. Although you might have to pack up your summer shorts until next year, and dig out the waterproofs, at least York in the autumn transforms into a wondrous world of orange and red loveliness.

To make the most of September, we have created an issue packed with lots to do, from the bursting events pages, filled with fun things to experience, to a Treasure Hunt that will help you appreciate the daily life of a Roman sentry (we explain later). Yes, you might have to wrap up a little more than you did last month, but make sure you get out there as much as you can and soak up the autumnal gorgeousness.

TIME TRAVEL

A family pass to The Treasurer’s House and a kid’s Re-Cycle.

Oh, and to that end, we’ve also made bike from a useful Road and Bike Safety feature for kiddos, to help them get safely around the city as the nights draw in. And, if time continues to move at this break-neck pace, you might as well dust off the Halloween decorations now. They could wear pumpkins as WE’RE BIG FANS OF SEPTEMBER! hats. Drivers won’t miss that! Because its a windmill on the cover, innit? Anyway, this is is going to be a ADVERTISING DEADLINE 8TH SEPT 2017 fantastic month, filled with so much to do and see. If you thought the start of Autumn was (the) end of fun, you’re waaay off.

What a treasure

The Treasurer’s House, tucked away behind the Minster, literally is a house of treasures. Every room is filled with pieces of art and furniture which all have stories to tell, from how they were made to what they were once used for. Looked after by The National Trust, the house's friendly room guides will happily share these stories when you visit, or pick up a new oddities trail to discover some for yourself. Find out more about it, at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/treasurers-house-york The great news is that we have a family pass to give away, and entering couldn't be easier Just answer this:

YORK LIFE

and life in general AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG

My day was just progressing nicely when The Text arrived. “Check your emails,” it advised me. Any excuse to stop ironing. But what a mistake. For the email in question contained a link to a cheering piece in the newspaper. “Why white wine could be doing you more harm than you think.” I have no idea why this was sent it to me, as I am not in the slightest bit interested in wine of any hue unless it is a day ending in ‘Y”. However, I read on. What a delightful compilation it is. Candida, liver disease, skin cancer, weight gain, depression: all sideeffects of a nice glass of white Burg. Not to mention my particular favourite: skin mites.

However, rather than simply switching to gin, I start to do some research (i.e. randomly Google things). And what an enlightening business it is. Honestly. Wine is Very Bad for you. Red or white, it increases the risk of breast cancer by 9%. Though hang on a moment: according to a study cited in the Daily Fail, it also protects against cancer. Moreover, Chablis may be

“Red Burgundy can help with menopausal symptoms.” positively good if you suffer from arthritis, and Cabernet Sauvignon might help to stave off Alzheimer’s

and Parkinson’s. Red Burgundy can help with menopausal symptoms. Champagne can help with indigestion. And, of course, we all know that red wine - any red wine - can prevent heart attacks. So far, so confusing. But then throw exercise into the mix, and it gets worse. Two and a half hours of moderate exercise a week reduces the risk of breast cancer by 12%. Given that I I have at least two and a half hours of strenuous exercise every day, never mind every week, does this mean I can down a bottle of wine a night and still have a reduced risk of cancer? Now there’s a thought.

In fact, it seems that I am so much in health-credit that I could take up smoking and still live to be 100. I don’t own a cat (they can cause schizophrenia, apparently, not to mention prostate cancer), and I do have a garden (gardening can lower blood pressure and exposes us to dirt). I am not overweight, therefore might have a reduced risk of diabetes. I don’t take selfies (these can apparently cause skin cancer). I don't have a laser printer (as bad for

your lungs as coal mining, apparently). I drink green tea (can reduce your risk of a stroke by up to 20%). I don’t eat salt (oh hang on a minute: salt was Very Bad, and now it has been declared a Good Thing. Along with butter). And not to mention the Mediterranean diet, though if this week’s newspaper reports are to be believed, I’m not sure my income is high enough to reap the rewards of this. I'm also not all that sure that pizza counts as 'good for you' (though a recent study said that cheese, formerly demonised, has now been rehabilitated. Good news for Love Cheese, then).

Well, I think. I am very much none the wiser. Not least because whichever Scientific Study you look at, it very quickly becomes clear that things 'can' be good for you, or 'might' be bad for you. Which really tells you nowt at all. But it does of course make me think how very lucky we are to live in York. You can walk everywhere - thereby cancelling out the cancerous nature of the glass of wine at the end of the trek to the Star Inn, and the extra diabetes-causing inch you would otherwise gain at the Fisherman’s Wife. We are terminally put off the idea of selfies, thanks to the gaggles of foreign tourists outside the Minster. We have marvellous market stalls selling everything we need for the Mediterranean diet, along with Henshelwood’s collection of butters for every occasion.

So let's forget what the scientists say, and raise a glass to living in York.

Dear

Got a problem? OF COURSE YOU HAVE. Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out.

Hey Daphne, My new girlfriend still pays bills with her ex partner. They have two phones on the same contract and there’s a couple of lose ends in terms of tv packages and broadband. I know that these things can be tricky to get out of, but I feel like he is using it as an excuse to keep in constant contact with her. He’s still single and regularly texting her. Should I be worried? Worried boyfriend

Dear Daphne, I recently had a massive row with one of my friends about me having to pay for our meal and cocktails. She had conveniently forgotten her purse it’s not unusual for her to always be a few quid short, never have the right change and outright state that she can't afford stuff, leaving her friends to have to sub her. None of us ever get paid back and one day I just lost my temper and shouted at her about it. Now that I’ve calmed down, I realise that she's hard up and I feel bad. She hasn't been in contact since we had this row several weeks ago and I don't know what to do. Guilty mate x

LOST MY TEMPER

Apologise. No harm ever came out of apologising, explain that you lost your temper and you didn't mean to shout. Perhaps suggest doing something together that doesn't cost a lot of money, or consulting her before you make plans. It may just be that she doesn't want to miss out on social engagements, regardless of whether she can afford it or not. Stay strong in terms of paying for her though, you don't want to be taken advantage of. Daph x

TIME TO CUT TIES

Worried boyfriend, I don't think you should be worried. If your girlfriend hasn’t been out of her old relationship for very long, its quite normal that there are loose ends to be tied up. The phone contract is a bit tricky - she could set up a direct debit to go into his account every month or vice versa. The other bills can be transferred to one or the other. I get the impression it’s too soon for you to say anything, so I would wait a couple of months, see if the texts get less regular and broach it later on in the relationship if its still bothering you. Daphne x

Dear Daphne, I have been with my partner for nearly a year now and I was recently introduced to his young teenage kids. The problem is, they hate me, and I’m not too fond of them either. They weren't ready to meet me, think I’m awful for taking him away from their mother and are, of course, in that difficult answer-back teenage stage. I find them ungrateful and rude. Can I salvage this relationship? Anon

Dear Daphne, My husband went and bought a puppy IT’S ME OR without telling me. We have two young children THE DOG and barely enough time to look after ourselves in-between jobs and kids. I can't see a way that it’s going to work, but the kids are already becoming attached and it would be heartbreaking to re-home the pup. What do I do? Angry Wife Grin and bear it. It sounds like you've already begun to adjust. Finding time to fit it into your schedule will be tough but rewarding. Make sure that your pup receives the care and attention it needs to grow into a well behaved, easy to manage dog, and use them as a way to teach your children about responsibilities. Make sure that you husband does most of the walking and feeding - it was his decision after all. Silly man.

to deal with and it’s good that you want advice and are willing to try and see past the kids’ behaviour. Be careful not to speak too badly about your partner’s teenagers to him. Remember that parents love their kids way past how other people see them, and he won't necessarily agree with you. It is maybe worth bringing to his attention that you're worried you’re not getting on great with them and see if he can put forward any suggestions to help the situation. A conversation between him and the mother could solve the children’s attitudes, if there is a united front from both sides. 23RD AUG 22ND SEPT

L to R: Agatha Christie, Bernie Sanders, Chris Pine, Mother Teresa

There would seem to be a marked improvement in the conduct of relationships and as two people pull together towards a common goal, a much lighter and brighter atmosphere is generated within the home. Special anniversaries give you a lift (discounting the usual birthday thing) or something may occur which becomes an anniversary to be remembered in the years ahead.

A little extra cash opens a few doors, although it has to be said that parents with school-aged children may experience a financial drain. Older children bring pride and pleasure when they are successful in a career ambition. Celebrations all round for that one! One slightly negative note concerns an unexpected bill in connection with transport or motor maintenance. Contracts being signed in connection with jobs.

ARIES

energy developing before month’s end. Parents may be concerned for the welfare of female children.

21ST MARCH - 19TH APRIL

On more than one occasion you will find yourself in the middle of family arguments which have nothing directly to do with you. If you just sit back and let others get on with it, you’ll be accused of not caring, so you’d better say or do something to show willing – not that it will actually change anything. Make a point of not believing all you hear.

TAURUS 20TH APRIL - 20TH MAY

For the sake of domestic harmony, avoid fights with lovers and partners

and let them have their own way. Keep any critical thoughts very much to yourself. Probably some issues with money, where it’s gone and what you’ve got for it, leading at last to some sensible discussions in connection with investments and savings plans.

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUNE

Some good ideas being kicked around at the moment, but the only way to make them work is to put them to the test. There will be some (surprising!) support from a lover or partner, which could well lead to a much stronger romantic

CANCER 21ST JUNE - 22ND JULY

There is a mood here of burning boats and blowing up bridges. Careful, then, when making decisions. There will be no going back once they’ve been made. Overseas links are quite strong and connect with reunions and business opportunities. Anything to do with pension plans, insurance and saving schemes, seems to be highly relevant.

LEO 23RD JULY - 22ND AUGUST

It’s worth remembering that actions always speak louder than words, and this philosophy is something which cuts both ways. As you are being judged by your actions, then so must you judge others! September is a month for separating the men from the boys and for cutting away some of the dead wood you’ve acquired over the summer..

SCORPIO 23RD OCTOBER - 21ST NOVEMBER

Ladies, before you can get what you want, you must offer something in return – and offer it first! Gentlemen will be considering every offer and opportunity, weighing up the pros and cons before they commit. Money that is owed to you probably starts finding its way back to you. However much it is, sit on it or shove it in a sock under the bed.

SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOVEMBER - 21ST DECEMBER

Whatever else may be happening, it is the romantic energy of life which seems to dominate your life at this time, and the more you can put into a relationship the more you’ll get out of it. Yes, there are a host of other things on your mind, but follow your heart and your emotions to find the best, and in some cases, the only solution!

CAPRICORN 22ND DECEMBER - 19TH JANUARY

I think that in this month you are going

to get something you have wanted for a long time. The question is, will it bring as much pleasure and satisfaction as you thought it would? Travel energies are strong, and even if there is only one special weekend away, it will be a time worth having because it brings fresh energy to long standing unions and relationships.

ELVINGTON WINDOWS THE HOME IMPROVEMENTS COMPANY

AQUARIUS 20TH JANUARY - 18TH FEBRUARY

If that which you give is taken for granted, then stop giving it and let’s see what happens next! Romantic aspects are strong for emotional rebels but the “Old Fogey Brigade” marks time to the same old tunes. Elderly Aquarians become alarmed at the speed in which the time flies by, and thus, we may see some impulsive “second childhood” situations arising.

PISCES 19TH FEBRUARY - 20TH MARCH

I would have thought a very bright and positive month for the majority of Piscesians, especially single fishes who are in the river of life waiting to be caught. There are significant gains and successes in both affairs of the heart and business/ career ambitions, and I dare say your mood will become more enthusiastic and positive than it has been for years! advertori al Enjoy!

STEP 4

Turn right onto Lord Mayors Walk. Round the corner you can see the walls again – nice and straight, as they were in Roman times. Keep walking. • What is the maximum weight a truck can be to park on this street? • Me and who?

Turn right again and pass through Monkbar. There was never a gateway here in Roman times, but lets use it anyway to get “inside the fortress”. But... • When was the gate’s barbican removed?

STEP 7

STEP 3

Carefully cross the road and enter the Museum Gardens. You’re still on the same Roman track, but now you can see actual Roman wall remains to the right. Stay on the path, heading for the Multangular Tower. • “Died February 9th 1970, aged...”? • When was the tower’s stone plaque presented?

The walls, still on the Roman alignment, start again at Bootham Bar. But don’t go up the steps, instead cross the road and continue down Gillygate. • Why is 26a Gillygate so cheap? • What two lovely and gentle things greet you as you seek salvation?

STEP 6

Right, let’s start walking. Head down Lendal, part of what used to be an access road around the outside of the front of the fortress. • What city’s monarch sells fried potatoes around here? • What number does the judge live at?

Turn right at the tower and follow the walls along the path next to King’s Manor. These sit right on top of the original Roman walls. After a while you’ll alight onto Exhibition Square. While there... • Which Henry stayed here? • Which princess necessitated the creation of a new gateway?

Carry on along Goodramgate for a while before turning left onto Aldwalk. We’re now following the Roman walls from the inside. • What military association is headquartered around here? • When was the Merchant Taylor’s Hall built?

To begin our trek around Eboracum, we start by the fortress’s entrance. Stand on St Helen’s Square outside Harkers and looking up Stonegate. This is where the Praetorian Gate once stood. But... • What kind of company used to call Harkers home? • Which famous confectioner used to live next door?

Carry on, keeping the market on your left. The streets you pass, Patrick Pool and Silver Street, both came into being by people knocking holes in the Roman wall. Needs must, eh? • Which couple would love you to join them for lunch?

Cross over Parliament Street by the (dead) fountain and carry on along Market Street. By the junction next to Costa is where the southern tower of the fortress stood. • Can you spot Rabbie's place? • In case of fire the switch must be... what? (tricky one, this) Turn right onto Coney Street, whicih, along with Lendal, served as a riverside walk along the fortress's facing side. • What is hanging around on no. 25? • And finally... in what year was that same insurance company from question one started? Yep, it's in Roman numerals. Which is appropriate.

Carry on down the street until you hit King's Square. This was the site of the Porta Principia Sinistra, the gateway opposite that which stood where Bootham Bar now stands. Head for the market. • In which fun little book was The Shambles first mentioned?

Well done! You just walked around (and through, a bit) the Roman legionary fortress of Eboracum. Big place, eh?

YORK LIFE Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: THE BACKHOUSE NURSERY During the 19th century many northern cities experienced huge growth thanks to booming industries like steel, coal, and textiles. York, however, experienced a more gentle and far less dangerous boom with its exports of chocolate and, rather romantically, flowers. One name synonymous with horticulture in York for almost 200 years was Backhouse, and the company left its mark on the city.

BLOOMIN' 'ECK York's association with internationally-renown botany has a lot to do with James Backhouse – several of them, in fact. The first James Backhouse

(1721-98) was a rich chap from Darlington, who, along with his son, James, formed Backhouse Bank. James' son, also called James, used his family's wealth to get a sound education in Leeds, and, both as a result of an interest in plants and as a sufferer of asthma, took an apprenticeship at a nursery in Norwich. After two years James (along with his brother, Thomas) began looking for their own site to establish a nursery, and they purchased a lot on Toft Green in York in 1815, owned by the Telford family. Interestingly, the site (which is now home to office buildings and the old railway station currently occupied by City of York Council) had been granted to the Telfords since 1665 on the site of a Dominican Friary garden, itself established in 1228.

BOOMIN' 'ECK From this point on, business was booming. The early 19th century saw a huge interest in botany, especially for specimens from far-flung regions of the world, which the Backhouse brothers were able to source. Gardening amongst the landed gentry became popular (although we assume not

many of them actually did any digging themselves), and the company provided not only seeds and plants, but also expertise in growing and care. In 1827 James' wife died, leaving him with two young children; one called James. Despite that, he left both the business and his children in the care of his brother and set sail for Australia. His was undertaking missionary work as a Quaker, but also used the expedition as a chance to collect rare samples from Australia, Mauritius, and South Africa. On his return to York ten years later (!) he took over running of the nursery, joined by his son, James.

STEAM AND FLOWERS As mentioned above, the Backhouse Nursery on Toft Green was to become the site of York's first major railway station. This was no coincidence, as the wealthy Backhouses, along with other rich Quaker families in the region, helped to fund the construction of the early rail network. If York was connected to the growing rail system, plants and

seeds could be easily shipped around the country, improving sales. But this development also necessitated a move, and the nursery relocated to Fishergate, onto land previously owned by the Rigg family, whose children died in a tragic boating accident that we've written about before (see the monument in St Lawrence's church yard). But that wasn't to last, as in 1853 the nursery moved again to a 100 acre site in Holgate – bigger even than Kew Gardens in London. James died in 1869, and the business was continued by his son James, joined by his son... can you guess? James! It was during this time, on the new huge site, that Backhouse Nursery was the most successful it had ever been, with 40 greenhouses, a famous rockery, and specialised alpine plants. The chances are you've walked around the site

However, following the agricultural depression of the 1880s, and later the First World War, demand for expensive plants and gardens fell. In 1921 much of the site was sold off (now covered by houses and a school), but the remaining part soldiered on in a vastly reduced state of 28 acres. This too, unfortunately, had to sold following the death of the final James Backhouse, and in 1955 City of York Council purchased it to turn into a public park. But the Backhouse legacy lives on. Take a walk around West Bank Park and you'll see glimpses of the old nursery, including the rockery, towering alpine trees, and tantalising lumps and bumps of long demolished buildings and greenhouses in the woods. And hey, the remnants of a beautiful nursery are a far better legacy for York than the crumbling ruins of a coal mine or steel works.

BRIDGE, THE GAME Bridge is a card game. We’re stating that for the record, as every time previously that we have written about York Bridge Club, we’ve filled the article with jokes about bridges. We’re not doing that this time, as the fact that the club, based in Holgate, offer Bridge for Beginners classes, is good enough for us. If you fancy mastering a game that is both mentally challenging and a great way to bolster your social circle, give ‘em a call today. The class starts on 5th September at 10am, and if you join in you’ll discover that bridge is very supportive... we mean, you should try it for a span of time... we mean... Sounds fun, but this is for a really worthwhile cause. Keep Your Pet is a charity that helps older people and their pets to stay together for longer. If an older person has to go into hospital, or into residential care, they might not be able to take their pet with them for a while. The charity finds temporary homes for cats, dogs, rabbits, budgies, you name it, until they can be reunited with their owners. TINKLE THOSE IVORIES When York Priory Choir got in touch and asked us to announce that they are seeking a new piano accompanist, they mentioned they were a “well established” choir. However, we had no idea that that meant they were this year celebrating their 120th birthday! If you’d love nothing more than to play along with a choir who are as much a part of York’s recent history as many of the buildings in the city, get in touch. They meet for two hours every Tuesday evening at St Thomas’ Church Hall, Lowther Street, and they would love to see what you, and your talented fingers, can do. n For more information, call either 705530 or 07974 393237.

York Music Service can offer better than that, arranging lessons for both young and old, on a huge list of instruments, that are exciting and engaging. They also organise trips to concerts, and are this year taking a gig-hopping tour of the Alps, and also performing at The Royal Albert Hall in the winter! n If you would like to find out how they could help you to become a true musical maestro, visit www.yorkmusicservice.co.uk

With many young people zooming off to university this month, they'll no doubt be making friends they'll keep for the rest of their lives. However, being a teenager in college has got nothing on being over 50 and a member of the FnT social group, as those guys really know how to have fun. The group of friends, who are always keen to expand with new members, go on regular adventures together, from trips to the cinema and local restaurants, to journeys across the length of breadth of Britain. If you're interested, you could go to one of their club nights on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month at the Railway Institute, or to the fortnightly coffee afternoons at the Spurriergate Centre. Now in its 20th year, FnT is a group that is always finding new ways of having fun together... and they would love to hear your ideas. n Find out more at www.fntyork.org, or call Annette on 704933 or Bob on 07740 470397.

Did you know that sewing can help people deal with breast cancer? It's true, and it's all thanks to The Supportive Sewers; a group of people who are talented with a needle and thread who work together to make cushions. These cushions are perfect for women who may have recently undergone surgery for breast cancer, to help keep their arms (and nuisance seatbelts) away from stitches. Formed from the cancer support group Breast Friends York, the sewers are keen for new members, as well as donations of supplies to keep the cushions coming. n To help out, call 07516 066599 or email info@yorkbreastfriends.org

There will also be a fun lingerie event taking place on 18th September, so check out our events section for further details.

GET THE BALL ROLLING... If you've ever felt the compulsion to get together with some friends and roll balls toward a smaller ball, but have never known why, you should definitely try bowls. Now is the perfect time to get into the sport, as New Earswick Bowls Club are offering a free session on 1st October, as part of the York 50+ festival, 10am-12pm. As well as that, they are also offering a four-week bowling course starting from 6th October, where newbies can learn the basics, meet the team, and hone their bowling skills. They're so friendly, you'll be bowled over! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Anyway, to find out more, call 750230.

This month I celebrated my five year anniversary at Your Local Link. It’s hard to fit 5 years of highs and lows into a 500 word piece, but i’ll try my best...

GIG OF THE MONTH

HELLO OPERATOR WHERE: Fibbers WHEN: 30 September INFO: Well it must have been ages since I last plugged my favourite band, of all time. HO are back in York to play a gig where it all started after playing the whole UK festival scene with This Feeling, signing a publishing deal with a huge music industy player and getting played on Hollyoaks. Turn up for big riffs from the best lead guitarist that ever did live (my boyfriend - no he didn’t pay me but he might read this).

YLL Design, Editorial & Accounts smashing Gr8 Escape I am dissapointed to report that they didn’t roll out the red carpet, declare my birthday a workplace bank holiday or welcome me into the office with my own personal walk on song and a round of applause (there’s still time guys). When I first started working here I was a defiant teenager, I’d dropped out of college, and was working in a bar. Luckily, that’s where I met Dean, I had a bit of banter about me and he thought I would be great in sales. He was wrong. I was TERRIBLE. Not only could I not sell, I fell asleep at my desk several weeks into the job. Picture above.

Realising the severity of my mishap, I decided to try and pass it off as a sleep disorder, much to the amusement of Mim and Kelly who pointed out that I stank of booze. I spent most of the morning untagging myself from nightclub pictures on Facebook and trying not to throw up before the exhaustion crept in. None the less I persisted, skirting my way into the design office. I began writing a monthly column about the trials and tribulations of being the resident teenager. It was here that I realised I loved writing and wanted to make a career out of it. Things were going to great until I

accidentally deleted a whole magazine three days before it’s print deadline. There’s no trash can on our server, you live by the sword and you die by it. I had to draft in some help and work like mad to re-create Best Pages in half the time. Your Local Link has been like the boyfriend everybody wants and needs. They have seen me at my worst and decided that my best self was worth it. And with that support and attention I’ve gone on to achieve stuff that I never thought I would. I am an NCTJ trained journalist, I’ve been a regional finalist for ITV and Mediatrust’s Breaking Into News, I have cared for a beautiful

You may have previously read about the great work York Rescue Boat does in this column. If you haven’t, the charity formed in 2014 and carries out vital work to keep people around the River Ouse safe. Now they’re looking for volunteers to join them in this worthy cause. The open evening for volunteers wishing to join takes place on 4 September at Beechwood Close Hotel. There will be a presentation on available roles, the work they do and an insight into training.

gaggle of cacti - who thrive in the work environment. Oh and my microwave cooking skills are just incredible.

I haven’t just worked for Link, I’ve grown up here. For 21% of my life I’ve been an employee of this company. I think that amount of time really shapes a person. I’ve made some incredible friends, earned a living, bought a car and learnt a tonne of stuff about publishing. While I’ve been here, I’ve seen nearly 300 publications go out into the world and I’m only 23. That’s a big deal. My days of going out on the lash on a ‘school’ night are way behind me, and I won’t be deleting any more magazines any time soon, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. So thanks YLL’ers, here’s to the next five.

What we’ve e u s s i s i h t learnt JAMES IS A POPULAR NAME FOR BOTANISTS

If you’ve ever met a gardener called James, he’s in good historic company. This month, while researching our Time Travel feature, we learnt that there wasn’t just one famous James Backhouse (of Backhouse Nursery – now West Bank Park – fame), but rather five. Or six. We lost count, to be honest. Successive fathers naming their sons James has not only confused us, historians, and post office workers, but surely family get-togethers were a nightmare. Anyway, find out more about the many James Backhouses (and their legacy) in the article.

It’s easy to spot the Celts

If, this month, you’re worried about the city being attacked by filthy Celts, have a go at sentry duty. For the Treasure Hunt this issue we are walking around the Roman fortress of Eboracum, tracing the exact position of the military base that grew (after many exchanges of power) into our beloved York. You don’t need to don Roman armour and march around the route barking Classical Latin at ginger people, but it definitely will help. Jus’ saying.

X SHOULD NOT BE A LETTER

AUGUST

IS A LIAR

It is, come on. Ask someone to draw their impression of what goes on during the average August, and you’ll see crude scribblings of beaches, bikinis, beaming yellow circles in the sky, and happy, sweating faces. But that is a lie. Quite frankly we welcome September and the coming of autumn, as August is always something of a damp disappointment. We’ve said it before, but the British Summer lasts for two weeks in early July. The rest is just... bleurgh. Either way, HAPPY HALLOWEEN CHRISTMAS NEW YEAR!!!

Don’t get us wrong, X is a very useful eXample of an eXcellent character, but we don’t agree that it should hold letter status. The alphabet should consist of only 25 letters, and that kids’ song should end “vee, double-you, COUGH, why, zed!” Because X is never the beginning of a word, ever. If you can name a word that starts with X right now, I’m afraid you’re a weirdo and nobody likes you. And X-Men doesn’t count, nerd. We discovered our distaste for X this month when completing our A to Z of road safety, geared up for the start of the school year. To find out what we finally used for X, flip there now.

...BUT 9 IS?

We were a little shocked to learn that kids at school no longer get graded with letters (A*, A, B, C etc...) but instead now work toward a number grade. Apparently 9 is the highest, dropping down all the way to 1. Why? Surely 1 should be the highest grade, as you can’t get any further than a number 1 (The mathematicians amongst you are all probably shouting, ‘zero IS a number!’), but having 9 as the top mark leaves it open to, ahem, ‘improvements’. Maybe there is a secret 10 grade, but only kids who go to Eaton can achieve it. Conspiracy! Anyway, read what Sarah has to say about the matter in her Sarah’s Asides column this month.

Civil Unrest

According to our Events Hotlist this month, it is 375 years since the start of the English Civil War. Who knew? Well, obviously historians, people who are into their history, and maybe even that Greenland Shark who is thought to be about 500 years old (he might have been there). Still, Yorkshire 375 will be taking place at Scampston Hall at the end of August, in which The Sealed Knot Society will re-enact a Civil War battle in all the smoky, messy, loud, and bloody glory. Apparently a higher percentage of the population died in that war than in World War One. Crikey. Lets not have another one of those, okay?

MARKETING ONE-TO-ONE by John Allsopp

MOD E RN MARKE TI NG F OR BUS Y B USIN ESSES

“What gets measured gets done Drucker, Deming, Peters et al LET'S SIMPLIFY. When was the last time you looked at your Google Analytics? If I'm honest, when it first came out I resisted it. I didn't understand what it was. If you feel the same way, or if you haven't checked your Analytics for a while, this is for you. Analytics is free. It's a service by Google that tells you how many people visited your website, how they heard about you, and what they tend to do when they get there.

something (or you wouldn't have a website in the first place). So .. when people come to your website, what do you want them to do? For many, they want people to buy something. What exactly is that action .. do you want people to call you to make their purchase? Or do they

How did your heart feel when I said that? Did you feel bad about not having enough traffic and perhaps not really knowing how to fix it? That's OK. Most of us have low traffic websites. If you're a garage door repair service or a wedding cake decorator, you probably won't have thousands of web visitors and that's how it should be. So why should you check your Analytics? Because you still want people to do

enquire using a form? If your site is an ecommerce site then that's fairly clear, they pay. Or maybe you want more social media followers, perhaps you would like people to open an account with you, or share your blog. For your chosen desired outcome,

you can create a Goal in Analytics. You may need a little technical help with that (get in touch if you like). Once your Goal is set up, you can see whether, for instance 10% of your Google Search traffic buys versus say 20% from ads. Perhaps your sales are coming from social

media, Twitter especially. Knowing that helps you focus your marketing efforts. You can see which search phrases people entered before they found you, and you can tell which searches turned into sales. If those were used in natural search, maybe you could profitably place ads on those phrases.

30 YLL Ads September 2017.indd 30

14/08/2017 17:46

“A key measure of success is your bounce rate,” If you have enough traffic, you can do a split test. For instance, which homepage picture is best? Analytics can run 'experiments' where visitors are split and some see version 1 of a particular web page, others see version 2. With Goals set up, you can see which version (photograph) delivers most sales. Once the experiment is over, you can go with the better picture and test something else. Evolution got us pretty much everything, with Analytics you can evolve your website. A key measure of success is your bounce rate, that is: what percentage of people arrive at your website and leave quickly without doing anything. Often it's about 40%. Your website's speed and its first impression are key to your success. You can run experiments to improve your bounce rate. Basically Analytics lets you follow the money. Using it, you can spot what's working and do more of that, and see what's not working so you can do less of that. It lets you hone your sales system

TWO YEARS OF LETTINGS FOR CARTER JONAS Congratulations are due to Carter Jonas after reaching the end of their second successful year of letting properties in York. From their base on Micklegate, the experienced team have helped landlords to find the right tenants, and tenants to find the right homes. They've let high-demand ultra-modern apartments in the new Chocolate Works complex, and also spacious farm houses further out of the city.

A PRE-CHRISTMAS PRESENT To share their birthday celebrations with everyone, the Carter Jonas Lettings Team has a very special offer. If you have a property you would like to let, list it with Carter Jonas and receive 50% off your management fees until Christmas. If that wasn't

incentive enough to go with them, the friendly staff draw from both a wealth of local knowledge, and from the national support of being a part of one of the UK's biggest property services companies. They know the very latest in landlord regulations, and can advise you on how best to present your property to attract more interest. Furthermore, they also offer a full property management service, so, in case of an emergency at the house or flat that you can't attend, they will. Peace of mind, and reduced fees – not normally something you get from a two year old! n To find out more about what the carter Jonas York team can offer you, give them a call today on 558230.

SPORT REPORT

with Dan Tait

Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.

Stadium cost and I bet Neymar doesn’t have a retractable roof”. Speaking of money, when I saw Man United were linked with Tinder, I thought perhaps it’s the right winger they are supposed to be crying out for, but in fact it’s a sponsorship deal that will see them pocket £12 million for having the dating app logo on their shirt sleeves. I guess they will try anything to get a decent match at Old Trafford. So it’s not just male BBC presenters that seem to get all of the money in the world. Brazilian superstar Neymar has been signed by PSG for a world record £198 million. Why they didn’t round it up to 200 seems to have passed me by, but someone worked out that for the same price as buying Neymar, PSG could have bought 792,000,000 Freddos, which begs the question… when the hell did that tiny chocolate bar become 25p? I know football has been money mad for a long time now, but paying a guy who scored 13 league goals last

HOM E A N D AWAY season half a million per week is a bit OTT, even by football’s standards, although Neymar has said the move wasn’t motivated by money. That may be true, but if he dropped a £2 coin it literally wouldn’t be worth bending down to pick it up (and not just because in France they pay him in Euros). One person commented that, “£200 million is what the Millennium

Of course York City don’t spend in the millions, but have been touted to have the largest wage bill in the National League North. This is the club’s first ever season in regionalised football and in 25 years of supporting the club I don’t think we have ever been favourites for any league we have taken part in, but looking at the likes of Leamington and Spennymoor Town, perhaps this is the year the Minstermen come out on top. Naturally, York City proceeded

to lose the opening game of the season at home to Telford United 1-0, where doom and gloom were in equal measure. I think there was more hysteria created than people seeing the new Bake Off trailer, as supporters contemplated what league was below the National League North (think it’s the SPL) after the indignity of losing one football match. People need to calm down; it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Sure enough, the next game they won 2-0 at the mighty Blyth Spartans and fans could breathe again. Some further positive news was that work on the new Community stadium will officially start in October after a lengthy process. I think the move was first mooted back in 2004 (with the view to move in by 2009). To put that in context, in 2004 Simon Cowell just revealed plans about a (karaoke) programme called X Factor, Peppa Pig was aired for the first time, and Nadia won Big Brother.

MEANWHILE, IN CRICKET... While York City’s season is just getting underway, Yorkshire CCC is coming to a close. September will see the final four County Championship games taking place, with the last finishing just before October, which is pretty ridiculous for a British summer sport. Supporters will be seeing their own breath as the last wickets tumble. I made the mistake of going to the last County Championship game against leaders Essex at Scarborough where Yorkshire were bowled out in less than two days play. As ever you can always rely on the supporter’s conversations to be the overriding highlight. Imminently retiring stalwart Ryan Sidebottom had a bucket collection for his testimonial and one tight Yorkshireman said he put a quid in but wanted 90p change. My favourite moment was a man paying £4 for a bacon roll and after asking for the rind to be cut off looked like he had ordered an overpriced pork scratching.

A couple of months back we featured a preview of the York City Past Players Charity Golf Day played at Pike Hills Golf Club on 26th July. The event was a huge success with the winners “Yorkie Boys” captained by former “Yorkie” mascot, Steve Ovenden. Featuring a host of former stars such as club legends Dale Banton, Andy McMillan, Scott Kerr and Derek Hood the organisers were able to present York Against Cancer with a cheque for £2000 towards the running costs of the new mobile chemotherapy unit, now being used in the York area. The photo shows York Against Cancer manager, Julie Russell, receiving the cheque from former City favourite, goalkeeper Graeme Crawford, alongside organisers from Pike Hills GC Graham Bradbury and Garry Dunn. Graham Bradbury was delighted with the event and would like to thank everyone involved including participants and all sponsors who supported the event.

Also, by way of a clip-on handle bar control unit, the helmet even has indicator lights, so cars behind know exactly where you're planning on going. Oh, and it'll keep your brain safe in the event of an accident. And we do so love your brain, you know? n£159.99 from www. amazon.co.uk FOOBOT. At home reading this? If so, what is going into your body right now? That is what the Foobot will get you thinking about, as this is a smart home air monitor. Foobot detects pollutants in the air and sends an alert to your smartphone, telling you to do something about it, such as open a window to let in more air. It can warn of bad stuff like moulds and mildew, and will glow red if too much nasty stuff is detected. IPHONIFICATION

Eh? Seriously, that is a real term now being used by car manufacturers. It refers to the fact that consumers are becoming so very used to swapping their latest possessions on a regular basis – just like they do with their smartphones – that an increasing amount of people are changing their cars more regularly. Retail specialist company CAP HPI conducted research and found that people would prefer to update their cars over their phones, with many saying they get bored of their cars after just 18 months. To be fair to the average consumer, cars are being updated now with similar regularity to smartphones, and as more and more car makers create low-emission and hybrid cars (stuffed with clever self-driving functionally) there is a greater desire to get an updated model. We suppose this will become an even bigger craze when, as reputed, Apple release their own range of vehicles. Imagine that; a new car ever year. It’ll look the same, do what other cars have been doing for a year, but cost you twice as much. Whoa, iPhone burn!

What colour is your car? Green? Red? Pink? If so, you're a weirdo and deserve to be ostracised by society for not fitting in, you damn individual. That is because the most popular colour of car last year in the UK was white, with black following closely behind. White and black have been the top two choices for new car colours for a while now, with grey and blue nabbing the third and fourth spot. Although white was the overall fave, in England alone black was King, with white winning in all other member countries. However, reports show that white is slipping, with numbers

down by 2% from the previous year. Eek. Still, these simple colours are far better than the awful champagne which seemed to adorn all new cars around the turn of millennium. Looked like metallic wee wee. Anyway...

E V E RYB ODY IS A LI AR

What about you, eh? Are you telling us the truth? We don't know who to trust any more, nor can be sure what is real. This existential crisis comes from discovering that car adverts are lying to us. No, not that if you buy a new car you will become as beautiful as the models filmed driving them, but rather that THE CAR ISN'T ACTUALLY THERE. Let us explain. There exists a car called the Blackbird; a battery powered, single-seater that looks a bit like a miniature Batmobile.

Used by the film and TV industry, the Blackbird is filmed driving along country roads, across deserts, and down winding Alpine tracks. You might have already seen a car advert with it in, but also you definitely haven't. That is because the Blackbird itself is then covered over in editing by a CGI model of the car actually be advertised – a car that might not yet even be completed. By using digital models cleverly overlaid onto the frame of the Blackbird, car companies can plan their marketing campaign before the actual product is ready to go. And quite frankly that blows our minds. Search in YouTube for ‘Blackbird filming car’ and you'll find videos revealing the transformation. No. Just, no. Nothing is real and we're living in the Matrix.

SMART THINKING I was visited this month by Chris Franklin of ERT magazine, a man and publication I am sure you will never have heard of, but both are big news in the electrical industry. This is one of the few times Chris has ventured north; the last being the opening of our store in Harrogate five years ago. It's always great to catch up with him because by visiting so many stores up and down the country he is always in tune with the ups and downs of this crazy business. So what did we talk about? First up, the Smart Home. I have written before on this subject and the huge benefits of connected devices and appliances. I failed to understand the electrical industry's view that this is some sort of meal ticket, opening the flood gates to clients clamouring for kilometres data cabling to be somehow forced into their plasterwork. Chris conceded that I may have a point; part of the beauty of this new technology is the ease with which you can get it to all talk to each other, but there's still room for a quality install job that sorts out any wireless issues.

We then moved on to web sales. Are Herbert Todd looking to expand our sales area? I suppose the presumption would be yes, and by having a site that's always on you can always be open, ready to make a sale. However, that's not really what we're about. I don't want to hand my customers products to a courier to deliver, as that would not lend itself to an excellent customer experience. Since our move out to Monks Cross and spending so much time and money to set ourselves apart from the average I am pleased to report that the store is making waves both in the national industry press but, more importantly, to our local, loyal customers in and around North Yorkshire. We look forward to seeing many more of you soon! n Visit www.htodd.co.uk

You can never be too prepared... We hear from Mel Collier of JDL... There’s truth in the saying ‘none of us are getting any younger’ and I don’t know about you, but I want to stay in my own home for as long as I can. With this in mind, I have a lot of people calling me at JDL to ask if we can ‘future proof’ their bathrooms, without it looking too sterile or clinical. Of course the answer is YES! Gone are the days of ribbed handrails and cumbersome seats; it’s all about making the bathroom work whilst also making it look beautiful, and there are a number of things you can do.

TUB

First, there’s the bath to contend with. As we get older, for many of us it’s difficult to climb in and out of the bath, so my advice is look at either a walk-in shower area or a reduced height bath. If you go for the shower area, add a seat which will fold up flat against the wall when not in use; that way, it’s there when you need it, but out of the way when you don’t. In both the bath and the shower tray look at anti-slip coating on the base to give you that extra grip and security. Secondly, think about your WC. For many, the simple act of sitting down can cause pain and when the toilet pan is low (as is standard nowadays), it

makes it very difficult indeed. This can be remedied by opting for a comfort height toilet. As the name suggests, it is higher than a standard pan which means it’s much easier to get on and off of. Many of the leading sanitaryware manufacturers have added a comfort height option to their ranges, which means you can go for style as well as practicality!

GET A GRIP

Finally think about handrails. The more you have, the easier it will be to keep your balance. The new rails now range from ultra-modern to quite traditional – there’s something for everybody’s taste and you can even get rails with soap dishes or shelves incorporated in them. What I would say to anybody undertaking a bathroom project is don’t just think about the here and now, think about the future – that way you’ll only have to do it once and it will last until your twilight years!

Green You don't need us to remind you that York is prone to flooding. If environmental scientists are correct, incidents of major flooding are set to increase in the coming years as a result of climate change. However, did you know that you could help slow that process with a new roof from Roofs Above? A Green Roof (also known as an Eco Roof or Living Roof) has vegetation growing on it

and can help to not only soak up heavy rainfall, but also to absorb CO2 and prevent it getting into the atmosphere. York-based Roofs Above are keen to talk to any homeowners interested in exploring the idea of installing a Green Roof on their property, as they are dedicated to helping prevent further flooding in city. n If you would like to talk to one of the team, call 693478.

Although September is the month when temperatures start to fall and the sun begins giving most of its attention to elsewhere on the planet, it doesn’t have to be the end of sitting in your garden. Here are some outdoor heating ideas to prolong the Great British summer.

PYRAMID FLAME HEATER Fire: the original heater. Make good use of a huge naked flame without being a crazed arsonist. This Pyramid Heater creates a tall body of fire to both heat and light your patio (and impress you friends, especially if you first tell them you're a wizard). n £299.95 from qavdirect.co.uk

LA HACIENDA CLIFTON STEEL CHIMENEA How about a fireplace in your garden? No, don't call in a builder and attempt to resurrect the chimney sweep industry... just get this cute chimenea. Small and portable, it can add some much needed heat to anywhere in your garden. n £53.44 from www.homebase.co.uk

LA HACIENDA OVALIS BIO-ETHANOL FIREPLACE Not only is this external fire feature as modern as an astronaut on Twitter, it also runs on clean bio-ethanol which produces very few emissions. As well as adding heat to you garden, it could also be used a centre piece in an evil genius' lair. n £184.99 from www.gardenfurnitureworld.com

KINGFISHER TABLE TOP HEATER This is a pint-sized version of the big heaters you've probably huddled under in a pub's beer garden. Instead of towering over drunks, this sits happily on your table, casting rays of lovely warmth over you and your dining partner. Wait, who is she? You said you only loved us?! n £79.99 from amazon.co.uk

DANCOOK FIRE PIT Fire pits were invented after someone accidentally set their stir fry on fire and asked their friends to sit around the flaming wok with them, singing songs of dinners lost. Now you can buy a purpose built fire pit, and this one is fairly snazztastic. n £175 from www.johnlewis.com

Autumn Hanging Baskets As the seasons are moving on, summer will soon be coming to an end. Your tubs and baskets may be beginning to look tired, but you still want your garden to look colourful; hanging baskets are such an easy way to add interest and colour to any space. Many people don’t bother with autumn baskets as they think there isn’t a good enough range of plants, as with summer baskets, to give them impact... but they are wrong! Autumn hanging baskets generally have better textures and contrasts than summer hanging baskets, due to the type of plants used, and if planted smartly autumn baskets can give interest throughout the winter months too. To give floral colour, choose from Pansies, Violas, Bellis, Heather and Cyclamen. These give the best displays and can cope with our winters relatively well. For foliage

colour, there are many options, ranging from Conifers, Grasses, Creeping Thyme, Ajuga, Hedera, Ferns and Sedums; thus giving you many different textures and foliage colours which will contrast and show each other off nicely. To add another texture you could also introduce fruiting plants, such as Solanum, Skimmia and Gaulthria, as the berries will add another dimension of interest. TRAIL-BLAZING To make an autumn hanging basket, it is generally best to fill the sides with as many trailing plants as possible with the

odd Pansy strategically placed all the way around. Almost overfill the bottom and side, because what you must remember is that autumn baskets won’t fill out as quickly as summer ones, so if left plant in the middle, such as a Grass, sparse it will probably remain looking Conifer or Skimmia. When satisfied quite bare. with how it looks, start with a ring Once happy with the sides it is time to start on the top. Fill the basket with of colour around the centre piece using plants such as Bellis, Violas and a good peat based multi-purpose Cyclamen. Again, when happy with compost, adding Osmocote to the how it looks you can then start on compost, which is a slow release the edges of the hanging basket. Use fertiliser. This will help keep your trailing plants such as Thyme, Ajuga plants looking better for longer. We and Hedera, and by doing this you use peat based at this time of year will create the typical sphere shape as it is lighter than soil based and less associated with a hanging basket, as water retentive, which is what you the edge will be encourage to merge may find you need as our winters with the sides creaming a seamless can be quite wet and you want to ball of colour. If maintained it can last avoid plants rotting off due to being right through the winter until it’s time too wet. 20374.15 HTbasket YORKlook THE PRESS ADVERT APRIL 2015_Layout 1 14/04/2015 17:30 to think about summer again. GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask

CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.

Q.

My garden lacks colour in autumn, so could you please recommend some plants that would provide lots of colour later in the year?

Although September welcomes the start of autumn, more than not the days remain warm and are usually an extension of summer. Attention to detail will keep your garden looking fresh and interesting in the weeks ahead, so continue to dead-head flowers. The cutting back of summer perennials which have finished flowering, and a light forking through of the borders, are a good way to keep weeds under control.

• Schizostylis coccimea kaffir lilies thrive best in a damp site, with their dainty small pink, red, and white flowers – truly a little autumn gem. • And last but not least, verbena 'bonariensis' boasts tall violet blue flowers on ridged stems, and will attract butterflies and bees to your garden.

To maintain trained forms and enhance flowering, wisterias must be rigorously spur-pruned in two stages: in summer and winter. Even wisterias that are allowed to ramble informally flower much better when spur-pruned. Prune in mid-winter, and again in summer, about two months after flowering. To aim of pruning is to control extension growth and to encourage the production of lateral flowering spurs.

Here are a good few perennials that will give you a late burst of colour to end off the year: • All of the Japanese anemones will add grace and charm to end of the season borders. Anemone 'September charm pink “honorine konigin”' is a beautiful white anemone, and “Konigin Charlotte” is a nice mid-pink. • Asters, also known as Michaelmas daisies, will start to flower later in September. Aster “Proffesor Anton Kippenberg” is blue with a yellow centre, and “Little Carlow” is a smaller variety with violet flowers. They also have pink, yellow, and white species. • Black eyes daisies will flower right through autumn and even into winter in the weather is kind.

These very ornamental plants are ideal for high walls and fences, and also for pergolas. Most are fully hardy, but flower best in a warm, sunny, sheltered site. Wisterias may take several years or more to begin to flower, and plants on nitrogenrich soils may produce excessive vegetation at the expense of flowers.

Q.

I have recently moved into a new house. There is a wisteria growing on the side wall which seems not to have been pruned for a few years. Could you please explain how I might go about pruning it? Wisterias are deciduous, woody-stemmed, twining climbers, usually vigorous, with pinnate leaves, grown for their beautiful pea-flowers. Flowers may be white, blue, or deep purple, pink or violet, and are borne on lateral spurs on ripened wood.

The current season's shoots are cut back in two stages, to within two or three buds of their base. These will bear the coming season's flowers. Growth and flower buds are easily distinguished in late winter; the former being narrow and pointed, while the latter are plump and blunt. Wire and vine-eyes are the best way to support wisterias to fences and walls, and also be sure to feed with a high potassium plant food to encourage good flowering next season.

Best of luck!

FILLING THE ONION GAP TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS. If you know your onions, it’s probably the spring planted type, those usually grown from baby onions or ‘sets’ planted out in late March or early April. These are harvested in late summer and will, if dried and stored carefully, keep for use right through to the following spring. The problem with just growing spring planted onions is that by April, however well stored, many will be sprouting and going soft. It’s then quite a few months before the onions planted in spring are ready, leaving the onion ‘gap’.

MIND THE GAP Like many gardeners I like to ‘mind the gap’ by growing over-wintered onions that mature in June or even late May. There’s two ways of doing this: either by sowing seeds or by planting sets. After years of trying both I’ve come to the conclusion that sets are more reliable. Over-wintering onion sets are readily available in

garden centres from late summer. Several varieties are commonly offered. One of the best, and one I usually grow, is Senshyu Yellow, a variety also available as seed. Its name is Japanese. Many of the newer over-wintered varieties originate from Japan so that, confusingly, over-wintered onions are sometimes referred to as ‘Japanese onions’. Other varieties I’ve used are Radar, which is a ‘yellow’ onion like Senshyu, and the red type, Electric. A new variety I’ve not yet tried is the very un-Japanese sounding Shakespeare. Whatever variety you choose, it’s important not to plant too soon. The main fault with over-wintered onion sets is a tendency to ‘bolt’ (produce a seed head) in spring before a good-sized bulb has formed. The likelihood of this occurring is increased by premature planting. Mid or even late September is plenty early enough; definitely do not plant the sets in August! However, don’t delay too long. Sets planted well into October may not have enough time to establish roots and foliage to survive the winter weather.

NO BOTHER Generally I find over-wintered onions to be trouble free. Unlike their spring planted cousins they don’t usually pick up the dreaded white rot fungus. It is best to choose a relatively well drained spot to plant as wet winter soil may impair growth. Very

hard winters with lots of frost can also cause casualties. An occasional problem I’ve had is cats and foxes nibbling the leaves and birds pulling out the bulbs as shoots emerge. If this occurs some netting may be necessary. By early November the sets should have sprouted a couple of strong shoots. Growth will then almost cease until early March when the onions will, all being well, spurt back into life. By early May some of the bulbs should be big enough to use, with the entire crop usually ready a month or so later. Over-wintered-onions don’t tend to grow as big as their spring planted onions, but then size isn’t everything in the vegetable world – taste and flavour is what really counts. To showcase this... York Organic Gardeners’ Association will be holding their annual Taste and Flavour Fruit and Vegetable Show at Brunswick Nursery, Bishopthorpe on Saturday 16th September. Judging is based on taste rather than size or appearance. The show is open to all; anyone who grows fruit or vegetables on organic lines can enter. n For further information see www.yorkorganicgardenersassociation.org.uk.

Paws for thought Calling all dogs! If you fancy a fun day out, and think your owner could do with a bit of exercise, drag them along to St Leonard’s Hospice special Paws for a Cause day on 10th September. Taking place at the University of York, the fun day will feature either a four or one mile sponsored walk, fun doggy classes, and even contents where you could win a prize (categories include ‘waggiest tail’ – you know, silly things that humans like). If all this sound like your kind of thing, and if you fancy helping out a really important human charity, paw this page of the mag over to your owner and do that sad eyes thing. You don’t need us to tell you this, but York’s parks are some of the best in the country. If you think that is merely an arrogant, but proud boast, don’t just take our word for it. The Green Flag Award has, for 30 years now, recognised parks and public spaces from across the globe that are well-maintained, safe, secure, and environmentally important. York already has several Green Flag parks, including Rowntrees Park, West Bank Park, Rawcliffe Country Park, and Glen Gardens, and this year both Clarence Gardens and Churchfield Open Space (AKA Wiggy Park) will be joining them. The accolade is important as it recognises the hard work and dedication of all the people – be they council staff or local volunteers – who help to make the spaces as nice as they are. Wiggy Park is near to our offices, so we’ll be celebrating with a go on the swings. Join us!

CYCLE SAFETY

• In wet conditions the road and path can be slippy. Take extra care, or consider walking instead. • Always wear a helmet. Because your brain is inside your head and you definitely need that. • Use both lights (front and back) and

high-vis clothing to make sure you're seen, even when it isn't totally dark. • Wherever possible, use cycle lanes and off-road cycle paths instead of the road. • If you cycle alone to school, make sure someone knows what route you take and what time you usually arrive. • Keep your bike in a good state of repair.

Sarah has something to say. Just keep it to yourself, will you? I GIVE THIS IDEA A 1 When I was at school, getting an A* at GCSE was the best you could possibly do. However, kids sitting their GCSEs this year will have been working to get a 9, after the government restructured the GCSE grading system. According to a press release we were sent, the restructuring of the exam system for 16 years olds will better prepare them for employment in “21st century Britain”. What other century are they going to get a job in? Apparently the new exams are tougher, making a 9 harder to attain. I don't really mind all this, but I'm quite fond of the letter system, and when leaving feedback on eBay I like to type “Very good seller A+++++++++”. Soon, no one will get what that means. “Very good seller 9” doesn't have the same feel, does it?

(especially me). That is the thinking behind OCAY, the Older Citizens Advocacy York charity, who work to help people over the age of 50 by providing a free and independent advocacy service to help them to have a voice in the issues that concern them. To offer the best possible service they can, they have recently moved to new premises on Priory Street. The new home for the charity has more space, especially to hold private and confidential meetings with their clients, which one day we all might be. So, if you need help or advice, go to 15 Priory Street, or call 676200.

DANCING FIGHTS CANCER! No, I haven’t discovered a miracle cure while tearing up the dance floor... but I do know of a great way to help doctors and scientists discover one. Last month in the magazine’s special York Against Cancer feature we reported on news of Bluebird Care’s dance night at Melodie Park, Wigginton Road. As well as being a tonne of fun, the night also raised a tonne of cash for the cancer-fighting charity. If you missed that, good news; another similar night is planned for 7th October, where you can join a beginner’s jive session, then enjoy an evening of ballroom dancing. Your ticket

will include dinner, and there will be a bar to... y’know... loosen you up a bit. Makes dancing easier, I find. With all proceeds going to York Against Cancer, you’ll have fun AND do some good. For more info, quick-step over to the phone and call 691992.

HERE’S A POSITIVE SUGGESTION FROM ME... If there is something in your life that you don’t like, be it a physical condition, or how you tend to react to things, here is your opportunity to tackle it. David Sear is a trained, experienced and qualified hypnotherapist based in York who is ready to help you however you want him to. Hypnotherapy really fascinates me, as it can be used to unlock your subconscious, enabling the therapist to work with you to overcome issues that are causing problems, like addiction, over-eating, and stress. After a few sessions with David you could end up feeling healthier, happier, and more relaxed... something we could all do with. H O WA R D’ S C O LU M N

I’VE DONE IT AGAIN Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words. About two and a half years ago I wrote a column about being unable to fathom how life with three children would be; as my wife, meanwhile, cooked our third child in her glorious Scottish tum-tum. Well, similar thoughts are returning once more, because I'm very happy to announce that we are now expecting our fourth. Wait, not happy. Nonplussed. This one was (hush) 'unplanned', and unlike the previous three, did not fit in with some grand cosmic plan my wife had worked out with the moon and the spirits of her female ancestors, or however it is she plans things. No, we were both surprised. This is a surprise. One of those surprises that is both good and, forgive me dear wife, bad. Like a Christmas present you don't have any batteries for. Or like when

Sophie Ellis Bextor asked her bodyguard to stand between me and her. Good and bad.

PRACTICAL Four. Four damn kids. Even writing that now confuses me a little; not because I cannot comprehend what looking after four kids will be like (once you hit three you tend to stop trying and just accept the chaos), but because I'm kinda okay about it. I'm not stressing out as I did in that column two and a half years ago (or the one from four and a half years ago) but instead just enjoying the pregnancy ride. That's not a euphemism.

car. While my wife was dangling the pee-soaked test before my eyes, waiting for my reaction, I was mentally shuffling the kids around the car seats, pondering where the shopping will go if we pop up the second seat in the boot. I think I blurted out “We'll keep the roof box permanently on the car” before I said anything else.

ROLE MODEL But four, dear York, four? I think I'm the first person in my family to have more than three kids since the 1940s, when having lots of children was encouraged as a good way of staying warm during the war-era winters. One thing that helped my mind accept and feel positive about

I've been very practical in my thinking. The first thing that came to mind when we found out was not ideas for names, but rather the logistics of fitting us all into the

Although there will soon be yet another voice calling out “Daddy, can you...” to which I will have to respond and act several thousand times each day, I'm now even more hopeful for the future. FREAK OUT So anyway, I'm going to be a dad to yet another person, and I'm not freaking out. Analyse it all too deeply and you might see that life-changing events tend not to freak me out, but possessive apostrophes being used where they are not needed, and leaving the TV volume on a number that isn't even, freaks me the eff out. And unexpected guests. And when Amazon put small things in big boxes. You know, the important issues.

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU

We hear from Laurie Prime of York Yoga Studio

ideal f or expressing your individualit y

People sometimes tell me about taking a yoga class which didn’t suit them, and this does not surprise me! There are as many ways to practice yoga as there are types of people in the world and finding the class that’s right for you is important.

Yoga can be quick and flowing or you may find yourself holding and relaxing into postures for minutes at a time. For some, there is joy in the challenge of building physical strength and stamina, but for others, yoga is about finding peace and relaxation. In other words, there isn’t any one style of yoga. Yoga is an individual practice and it is important to find a style that suits you. You need to find the level that’s

T

right for you. If it’s not challenging enough, you might get bored. If it’s too hard, you may find yourself becoming disheartened. A good day and time is important so that you can come regularly, and it’s crucial to feel that you have a teacher you trust and respect.

We make it easy for you to sample different classes. You can drop in to many classes, and you can also get a punchcard, which is a 10 class pass. You can use the punchcard across a variety of styles and levels so you can attend the class that’s right for you on any given day.

In fact, I sometimes describe finding the perfect yoga class as somewhat like dating.....you don’t usually marry the first person you go out with! For some reason you just didn’t click... so you try another until you find THE ONE who is right for you.

You are a unique and amazing individual, and your own personality is your best guide on your yoga journey. At York Yoga Studio, we are honoured to help you find the path that is right for you.

At York Yoga Studio, we understand this and try to make it easy for you to find the perfect fit. So we have a variety of daytime and evening classes, and we have many styles to choose from - maybe fast and strong like Vinyasa Flow, maybe slow or gentle like Yin, or maybe you would like a general class like All Levels Hatha that covers most of the bases. Sometimes what you really need can change from week to week. It’s all Yoga, and every class will give you the benefits of this ancient and powerful practice in a way that allows your own individuality to flourish.

RETRIDERM AND VITAMIN A

OBAGI VITAMIN C

When skin matures, it’s best to adopt an anti-ageing regime to combat the harsh effects of time. Aiding rejuvenation and tackling the signs of ageing is achievable with a little help. The best treatments help stimulate and replenish many of your skin’s natural qualities.

Sun worshipers may see sings of ageing sooner than others. Overtime UV damage, environmental factors and natural ageing take their toll. But sun damage alone can cause wrinkles, noticeable changes in skin texture, reduced elasticity, and discolouration.

Retriderm harnesses the qualities of Retinol, a naturally available form of Vitamin A that can be found in our diet and in our own bodies. The unique, patent serums optimise the availability of retinol that can get to work in our skin, while minimising irritation.

Free radicals – tiny, unstable oxygen molecules that are naturally present in our environment – also cause skin damage. To correct and prevent the sign of damage and ageing, it is important to incorporate a topical anti-oxidant into your daily routine.

Skin looks and feels great after the intensive 24 week programme. Expect to see smoother skin with fewer lines and wrinkles plus a brighter, more youthful complexion.

• Neutralise free radicals to prevent future skin damage

Daily use of topical anti-oxidents can:

• Help correct signs of sun and environmental damage

The programme is designed to get maximum results from Retriderm™, a clinically proven range that uses vitamin A to regenerate skin. The first phase of the programme gives your skin a chance to acclimatise to the products before stepping up to an intense four week period to really tackle those tell-tale signs of ageing. You’ll then step back down and settle into a regime that will enhance the results that you’ll have already seen, and that you can maintain over time.

• Revitalise skin by stimulating collagen production and increasing elasticity

• Brightens skin Professional-C Peptide Products Can Provide Visible Signs of Improvement Within 1 Week. • The majority of users felt their skin looked brighter • 75% of users stated that they prefer the feel of the products over their current products • 83% of users stated they would recommend the products to a friend • A majority of users appreciated these improvements in their skin: • Had a youthful radiance • Felt smooth and firm With products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. Visit www.skindoctorclinics.co.uk or call 633833.

• Result in lighter, brighten and softer skin Obagi's line of Vitamin C products is formulated with L-ascorbic acid to help defend against the visible signs of skin aging. Vitamin C has many useful benefits: • Helps minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

What a result! I hope you’re well. Thank you for your team’s distribution this year for The Great Yorkshire Fringe, the brochure was definitely seen

and picked up further afield than we had achieved in 2015 and was cited as a reason for booking for a larger portion of our audience, thanks to the distribution I feel. We will definitely be doing so again in 2017. THE GREAT YORKSHIRE FRINGE

It is not often we come across a company as detailed and professional as you. Team distribution. We have had over 100 vouchers back already from Local Link, please book me another. BEECHWOOD CLOSE HOTEL. We have had an excellent response to our recruitment ad in Local Link, absolutely

loads of applications and enquiries from the website and a brilliant open day as the result.

Thank you, we will now use you whenever we have a recruitment need, you have certainly proved yourselves to us. NHS HOSPITAL (YORK)

We have had over 100 applications so far for our Administrator position, an absolutely fabulous response and the best response we have ever had from any advertising. Our HR department couldn’t believe that Local Link is a free magazine, given its quality and content. We are very happy, thank you. THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY After the company profile appeared in the new Your Local Link, my phone just rang off the hook. Thank you, please let me know when I can have another one! Neil Webster UPVC WINDOW DOCTOR Please pass on my thanks in regards to the special series of adverts in January. I had specifically asked for a campaign to reflect my business, and you could have not done a better job! Paul. QUARTZ TRAVEL I would not hesitate to recommend localink to

anyone looking for good value advertising in the York area. YORK CATS PROTECTION Thanks to Your Local Link we have had more than 20 new members joining Creating Cooperating Community. CREATING COOPERATING COMMUNITY The only advertising I do locally is with yourselves, in the magazine and online. I have built my

decorating business off the back of it and it really works. I am now thinking of talking on an apprentice as I am stacked out with work. I cannot believe how well it has all worked for me, it’s great not having to worry about where my next job is coming from and knowing I can rely on your magazine coming out reliably month after month and bringing in the quality local enquiries all the time.
