Our newly revamped website, www.yourlocallink.co.uk, is filled with original content that you won't find in the magazine. This month, feast your eyes upon...

ROSS NOBLE. We hear from the famous comedian about his new touring show, El Hablador. After 20 years on the road, he tells us what’s changed for him.

HOWIE’S TECH NEWS. When he’s not writing about the hell that is having four kids, Howard also enjoys fiddling about with tech. Here he dips into current tech news, and generally plays with toys. For your benefit, so he tells us.

MATTHEW KELLY. Tonight Matthew, we’ll be... talking to you! We catch up with the legendary Matthew Kelly about his new role as York-born W. H. Auden in Alan Bennett’s play, The Habit of Art.

CONRAD NELSON AND DEBBIE MCANDREW. We chatted to the theatrical powerhouse couple behind Northern Broadsides latest production.

RICHARD WINSOR. About to be ‘stayin’ alive’ in the stage production of Saturday Night Fever, we talk to Richard Winsor. Y’know, that bloke from off Causality.

FEATURES THE CULTURE VULTURE. Every month we get the low down on what is happening in the city, culture-wise, from our own resident Canadian, Anne. This month she considers The Secret Garden at York Theatre Royal, and the existence of real magic. Oooooo...

The website also hosts larger, expanded versions of our magazine articles, such as Time Travel and Treasure Hunt. More bang for your buck. But it’s also all free. Noice.

LOCAL BUSINESSES We have a huge directory of local businesses and services, from plumbers to lawyers, providing a one-stop shop for all your needs.

EVENTS GALORE! One of the greatest things about the redesigned site is the huge events section. As well as detailing everything going on in and around York, you can also upload your own happenings, making sure the whole city can see. And yep... it’s free! Go to www.yourlocallink.co.uk/events

YORK LIFE

Welcome ye lovelies During the next month the leaves will start to turn, the days will shorten, and it will become increasingly difficult to justify wearing that awesome t-shirt/ shorts combo you’ve been rocking since May. Also, at some point in the next few weeks, the Christmas decorations will start to go up around the city, despite City of York Council only having just taken them down. Ha!

Oh hi, didn’t see you there. How you doin’? Yes, we realise that the heat has finally leaked through the clouds, and that summer is drawing to a close, but we’re still chipper. You see, September is a pretty magical time of year, and not just for parents who are utterly sick of their kids having been under foot these past six weeks. No, we mean autumnal magic.

Seriously though, we love September with its not-too-hot, not-too-cold

attitude to the weather, and an overall feeling that things are finally winding down. Our own attitude has been anything but wind-downy, as we’ve been busy creating an action-packed edition of Your Local Link, placing heavy emphasis on the Local bit. If you’re looking for a treat for the wee ones prior to them returning to school, flick to the events section to see what’s brewing near you, and if, once they’ve return to their studies, you

YORK LIFE AND LIFE IN GENERAL (whom the waiter apparently resembled), my mother did not take much convincing. “I do have another daughter as well”, she said. Possibly with rather more enthusiasm than she has ever shown for me in the past. “In that case, I will have her, too. Sixty cows,” he announced.

“A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!” Shakespeare may have thought he was onto something big when he had Richard III utter the now famous lines. But dear old Shakespeare had nothing on the South African waiter my family recently encountered in a Yorkshire restaurant. There they were, quietly enjoying their Sunday lunch - when up popped the waiter. He took one look at my sister who is, admittedly, rather attractive. “I

will offer you 30 cows in return for your daughter,” he declared to our parents. He went on to explain that he belonged to a Zulu tribe in which cows are exchanged for marriageable women. 30, he said, was the maximum cowpayment per woman. The average, in case you ever need to know this, is apparently 12. Having something of a fondness for four-footed creatures and Sidney Poitier

I’m not sure he would have been quite so quick to part with his cows if I’d been there in person, but I’ll happily go along with the idea of being worth 30 of them. There comes an age where you will take any compliment that’s on offer. But it did get me thinking. One daughter for 30 cows. I think I could have struck a rather better deal for him. Both my teenagers for 10 cows? Well, why not. Steak freezes perfectly well, and now that I have a slow cooker, I could turn the scraggy cow-bits into some kind of stew, which would see me through the horrible winter we are bound to have after a sunny summer. I

could even make hoof soup or some such, and there would be no teenagers to moan about it. No moaning, and no having to think about what to cook for the next year or so: I think this is what’s known as a win-win situation. Pondering further, it occurs to me that it would be possible to have an entire cow-scale for the people in your life. Or, rather, for the people you might not mind losing from your life. We must all know people whom we would be happy to exchange for just a couple of cows. I was at school in the dim and distant past with several of these types. Cousins long unseen may also fall into this category. And then there are those whom we would gladly just give away without any need for bovine compensation. Grim1970s school teachers would possibly fall into this particular camp, along with Germans clad in laceup leather lurve-trousers, former work colleagues from the dark days I spent not in York, traffic wardens in

“In that case, I will have her, too. Sixty cows,” he announced. Duncombe Place, Minster tourists with selfie sticks, and 50-something men wearing jeans and trainers. Right at the bottom of the scale, there are those acquaintances for whom we would gladly offer up our own cows (or even our life savings), just for someone to take them away, as quickly as possible. I am, of course, definitely not thinking of the outgoing Dean of York. At the opposite end of the spectrum, of course, there are those who defy the Cow Counter. cows, never mind 30. Who would move sofas from A to B, then back to A and back to B if I swapped Craig at A1 Removals for a herd of cattle? That said, if you threw in a wodge of goat’s cheese and a nice bottle of White Burgundy to go with the cows, I might be more persuadable. And if you were offering an even nicer bottle of Chanel or a Mulberry handbag, I could quite happily do without the cows altogether. After all, I’m not really sure where I’d put the spare creatures once I’d used up all the space in my somewhat small garden and the freezer. Meanwhile: Zululand, here I come.

JOIN THE CLUB THIS ‘SOUNDS GOOD’ If you love to sing, but have never really worked out how to get good without signing up to a stage school, read on. Spirit of Harmony, the well-known men’s choir, and one of the top barbershop choruses in the UK, are on standby to help your singing dreams become reality. This month they are running a five-week course in the art of a cappella singing, taught by the choir’s experienced members. An ideal course for those who have ever wanted to form their own harmony group, you’ll learn about breathing, vocal techniques, tuning, and performance. The course will culminate in a concert for family and friends on 11th October, allowing you to show off your new-found singing abilities. You don’t need to know how to read sheet music, as all that is asked is that you have a passion for singing and a readiness to learn. The course starts on 13th September at Holy Redeemer Church Hall, Boroughbridge Road, so to find out more, visit www.spiritofharmony.co.uk

YOUR NEXT PASSION If the end of the summer has you feeling glum, or if you’ve got a sudden surge of energy because the heatwave is finally over, why not try a new hobby? If you’ve always fancied yourself something of an artist, but never known how to get started, we have just the group for you. Micklegate Artists meet every Wednesday morning from 5th September at Guppy’s Enterprise Club on Nunnery Lane. They’re friendly, informal, and cater for all kinds of artistic interest, and new members are especially encouraged to pop along and find out more. n Should you like to know more, call John on 707090.

WHAT AN OCCASION The Occasion Choir are inviting new singers to join their family of dedicated members - especially Sopranos and Altos. If you would like to join them, their rehearsals are Thursday 7.15 - 9.15pm at St Edwards Church, Dringhouses. You would be made most welcome.n For more information please ring 01904 701459

POP IN TO THE POP INN Each week Oaken Grove Community Centre in Haxby opens its doors for the Pop Inn. Taking place on a Tuesday during term times, it offers a variety of lunch options like sandwiches and jacket potatoes, as well as a range of weekly specials, puddings and hot drinks, all at reasonable prices. There is even a raffle! The event has a wonderful atmosphere with all proceeds going towards supporting Haxby & Wigginton Youth & Community Association and the activities run at Oaken Grove. If you are interested in supporting the Pop Inn, both as a volunteer or to enjoy lunch with other like-minded residents from the area, visit www.oakengrove.org/pop-inn or call 769176.

PREPARE TO CREATE Feeling creative? Let us paint a picture for you... How about taking an art class with other keen newbies, taught in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere by experienced and talented tutor? Sound good? That is just what Seek Art School offers, via a range of day, evening and Saturday classes, with one-to-one tuition available, too. All materials are included, and the school’s next term runs from September till December at Southlands Methodist Church, Bishopthorpe Road. Sign up for the likes of figure painting classes, drawing for all abilities, printmaking and many more. n To find out more, visit www.seekartschool.co.uk

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Are you looking for a new challenge that will make a huge difference to some people’s lives? If so, take note of the York Blind and Partially Sighted Society’s search for new volunteer home visitors, who help people with sight loss to get out of their house and enjoy the everyday things that other people may take for granted. The home visiting scheme provides a valuable service to people who are living with sight loss, enabling them to live an independent – and fun – life. This is a flexible role that can be fitted around your other commitments, so to book yourself onto the next training course on 11th October, call 731122 or email volunteermanager@ybpss.org

Head over to www.yourlocallink.co.uk for dozens of other great local clubs to join.

s e op c s o Hor SEPTEMBER

VIRGO

23RD AUG22ND SEPT

A busy and tiring period on the work scene, but a very satisfactory period where finances are concerned. Specific gains should be made between the 8th and 13th, and then again with greater advantage, between the 22nd and 27th. If there are any arguments about money (ie. how it should be spent) then do make sure that your voice is heard and do not make any compromises that might leave you out of pocket. Relationships are fundamentally sound, but on a day to day level, there will be mood swings and it won’t always be easy to read a partner or to align yourself

LIBRA 23RD SEP - 22ND OCT

Romantic harmony is high on the cards throughout September, and you need to work hard at keeping it that way, avoiding the usual pitfalls of contention. It is human nature to want more than what you’ve got, but be thankful for that which you do have, and respond positively to any new romantic and sexual energies that come knocking on your door.

SCORPIO23RD OCT - 21ST NOV

More by choice than anything else, you’ll be throwing yourself into jobs and careers, deliberately putting affairs of the heart on the back burner. This gives you some time to breathe and examine your emotional priorities. Once you’ve made your mind up about a few things, don’t be afraid to act and put your ideas into action.

with their thoughts and priorities. It would help if partners could be a bit more open with you about their inner feelings, but this is their problem, not yours. All you can do is let them know what you think and how you feel, then it’s up to them to respond one way or the other. A chance meeting with someone from your past will have and unexpected effect, making you think of times gone by, and causing you to wonder how your life might have panned out had you made different decisions a number of years ago. Don’t try turning back the clock, but learn something from your history.

SAGITTARIUS22ND NOV-21ST DEC

With regard to family matters and long term plans and ideas, there is greater clarity emerging at this time and you’ll find yourself relaxing in the knowledge of where you’re at and where you’re going. A few red tapey situations may need your attention, but don’t feel that you’ve got to carry the responsibility for important family decisions all on your own.

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN Capricorns (especially Capricorn ladies) are very good at putting their heads in the sand, but you really do need to rise above your ostrich impressions and start being a bit more realistic, especially when considering the alternative options for your long term future. If you can do this, you open the door to revelations and new emotional insights.

There are new moods of freedom coalescing round you and it shouldn’t be too hard to find the courage to do a few things you’ve wanted to do for a very long time. Ambitions are either attained or come one big step closer and you’ll feel that you are in control, heading in the direction of your own choosing. Interesting links with the USA for some.

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

It’s very much a “wait and see” kind of month and you’ll feel that your hands are tied while other people make important decisions, which inevitably will have some effect on you. With this in mind, be patient, but do not be silent. You must make your voice heard and be clear about your own needs and expectations. Some clarity found on the 17th/18th.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR

Interesting meetings between the 1st and the 7th change your long term career perspective, and also bring you closer to someone on an emotional level. Romantic aspects liven up your weekend evenings, but could be something of a financial drain. The 21st till the 25th is a brilliant time for putting new ideas into action. Stop talking and start doing!

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY

Although you’ll be fighting hard to rise above it, September will be a moody month wherein you’ll feel restricted by your own sense of limitation. Work projects at this time could be an absolute

blessing if they give you something to focus on and help to lift your spirits. Relationships improve if you can do more to express your innermost emotions.

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN

YORK LIFE

AQUARIUS20TH JAN - 18TH FEB

A new business opportunity comes knocking on your door and although you might be doubtful of its feasibility, give it some careful thought because this could be a real winner for you, with everything to gain and little to lose. A number of family concerns should be resolved at this time, especially any issues relating to health.

CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL

This could be a wonderful period for new love and romance, but you will have to find the courage (a) to put your heart before your head, and (b) justify the need to be just a little bit selfish. This may cause some angst in certain quarters, but other people close to you must be made to see you for what you are, not what they would like, or expect you to be.

LEO 22ND JUL - 21ST AUG

Some applause and acknowledgement of your skills and achievements makes you feel good about yourself, and gives you the courage to be just a little bit braver, not only where relationships are concerned, but also on the work front. No point in hiding your talents under a bush… make a noise and blow your own trumpet long and hard!

Treasure Hunt

For this month’s hunt we take in the village of Strensall. Join us as we take a wander and spy out some teeny tiny details.

1.

We start right outside St Mary’s Church in Church Lane. That way we can get our monthly round of ‘Reading Gravestones’ out of the way. Enter the church yard...

2.

Exit the church yard and continue left along Church Lane.

What number house has lofty aspirations? Why might a certain bird enjoy this part of the village?

Continue onto The Village, keeping straight.

How old was William Bellerby when he died? Where did John Robinson die?

What was Strensall referred to as in the Domesday Book?

Which word looks like a spelling error (but wasn’t in 1894) on George Fawcett’s headstone?

Why might making a public phone call around here give you a shock?

5.

Continue onwards then throw a left onto Sheriff Hutton Road. Cross the River Foss on the modern pedestrian bridge, giving you a good look at the parallel 1798 bridge by famous architect John Carr. But...

4.

6.

Turn around and head back to The Village. Just before you turn left and carry on... What do the names carved into the stones on the Methodist church have in common?

How far along the public footpath to Haxby Moor Road?

Moving on, what house name hints at the village’s industrial past?

Speaking of warnings, why wouldn’t Tiger Woods be happy around here?

What family seems to have lost two members in the Great War?

Following the looping street around... whose Court?

THIS MONTH: THE LOST SWIMMING POOLS OF YORK

After a sweltering summer, we bet you wished you'd spent more time lounging around a pool. Well, such an sunny day activity was something the people of the past could do far easier than we can, as York once to possessed a lot more swimming pools than it does today. We check out some of our city's lost swimming baths.

another four decades. There were changing cubicles along the pool's edge (although no lockers for your clothes) and a raised viewing platform popular with sun bathers. The pool was closed in 1980 over health concerns – being close to a river that regularly flooded didn't help – and despite a public appeal, they were demolished six years later.

the city corporation to be used for such purposes. Decades later, in recognition of his work, the pool was named after him, and the remaining money from his legacy was used to kit out the pool with equipment.

EDMUND WILSON SWIMMING BATHS

ROWNTREES PARK Possibly the most well-known of the lost pools, due to the fact that it was demolished as recently as 1986, the open air swimming pool occupied space now taken up by the park's northern car park. Opened in 1924, swimming was free for all, although the pool was completely unheated. Admission prices were introduced in 1944, but the pool remained a popular local attraction for

Closed as recently as 2009, the swimming pool on Thanet Road (now a Lidl) was built in 1969 as a complete and enclosed leisure facility. Many of the local schools used it for children to learn how to swim, and that was exactly what the pool's namesake intended... despite dying almost a century before it was built. The real Edmund Wilson was a champion of swimming in York, known for using the original Yearsley river facilities (see below) and for hosting galas and swimming competitions. He was very keen for York's youngsters to learn how to swim, and therefore left a large sum of money in his will to

fell in the latter decades of its existence. Many former Scarcroft Road School pupils, who used the pool for swimming lessons, reported suffering with stinging eyes for hours after each session – most probably from the high levels of chlorine in the water to keep germs at bay. It was, after all, sitting on a floodplain!

THE BARBICAN POOL

ST GEORGES BATHS Built in 1880 on the triangle of land where the Foss meets the Ouse, St Georges Baths enjoyed almost a century of use by Yorkies before being demolished in 1972. The complex boasted two separate pools and, uniquely, a roof, making it a popular choice for swimmers and schools all year round. However, much of the research we did about the lost pool seems to mention the dirty and decrepit state into which it

Built when many of the other pools on this list were being knocked down, the original Barbican pool was constructed on the site of the former cattle market. It predated the current, surviving concert venue by nine years and was known for its high diving board. Unfortunately, by 2000, the entire complex was being operated at a loss by the council, so the site was put up for sale. Initial plans were for new swimming facilities to be built on the site of the old ones, prompting the building's demolition. However, those baths never came and the whole site was abandoned for years. In 2011 it

THE MARYGATE BATHS We say Marygate, but these swimming facilities were located inside the Museum Gardens, right by The Hospitium. Opened in 1837 on land leased by The Yorkshire Philosophical Society, the baths were open to the Victorian public for a princely admission of 6d for adults, and 3d for children – quite a lot back then. The pool was notable for ornate ironwork piping in the shape of a dragon's head which was used to fill it up. This oft-forgotten facility was closed in 1922 but wasn't removed until 1969, meaning many people knew it only in dereliction. However, the site was still used on occasion, with the local Scout group holding bonfires and firework displays there. We wonder what happened to those ornate pipes, as we think they'd look awesome in our toilet.

THE ORIGINAL YEARSLEY BATHS Yearsley Pool might still be in operation today, but it's current home just off

TI L ES • BATHROOMS • NATURAL STONE Haxby Road is not where the baths started out. A section of the Foss river bed behind Yearsley Crescent was cemented for about 90 metres and nets were placed at either end. Opened in 1859, and initially only for men (as it was possibly indecent for women to be wet in public(?)), the pool boasted a changing hut and a part-time attendant whom we like to imagine possessed a very large moustache.

The make-shift pool was closed in the 1930s, as since 1908 the purposebuild, and far more hygienic facilities of Yearsley Baths were proving increasingly popular. Initially lacking a roof, the pool was built by Rowntrees and gifted to the City. In 1965 a roof was added, meaning the pool could be used all year round. BTW... Yearsley is a village in the Yorkshire Dales by which you'll find the source of the River Foss. Nice. Oh, and we really want to know if the cemented river bed is still there. Anyone fancy joining us for a dip?

BONUS POOLS We know, we know... we left some out. There was no way we could mention all of York's past pools, including those on former school or hotel grounds, and also Water World which was lost to make way for the new stadium which is set to open two years ago. Tee hee. Also, we missed off the first ever public baths in York; those built by the Romans. Actually, you can still visit those, unlike many more recent baths on this list.

YORK LIFE

COLUMNIST

Krystal’s gems

This gal got herself an interview with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of York. What did I learn? First of all to stop underestimating how long it takes to get to interviews. Second of all, just how these guys manage to get around nearly 600 events in a year without losing their cool. The 801st Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Keith Orrell, is waiting patiently when I stumble into the ticket office five minutes late and in a bit of a flap. Lucky for me Cllr Orrell seems unfazed by my tardiness and the weak explanation of traffic. I guess patience is a fairly important trait to have when you’re constantly travelling around the city attending opening events, ceremonies, church services, fun runs, fundraisers and much more.

24

For those of us who fancy inviting the Lord Mayor to our next big knees up, it might be handy to know that: “Theoretically they could! Our general principal is if people invite us, we’ll go. The only caveat is that if we’re already booked up for that time.” the Lord Mayor explains. It’s easy to picture our first citizens swanning effortlessly through the city, a blur of chains and hats. But behind the scenes, there’s a lot of work to make sure it’s a smooth operation. Take Lady Mayoress, Judith Orrell, for example. On her days off, you’ll catch her in the kitchen prepping food for busier days, and there’s versatile outfits to plan: “We try and plan it so that it works for the day, I keep another pair of shoes in the car and Janet, one of the drivers, has

got a box that’s got tissues, sun cream, a needle and cotton in the boot of the car. Knowing that’s there is quite useful.” The Lady Mayoress also keeps a cereal bar in her handbag for the days they get caught short on the food front. Lord Mayor however, is a little less organised: “Sometimes they say there’s food gunna be there and there isn’t - that’s the worst. You never believe it until it happens.” It’s said in good humour by Cllr Keith Orrell, but personally, I’d be pretty miffed if I turned up to a party

and there was no snacks. I’d be making some serious email complaints. Jokes aside, the Lord and Lady Mayoress seem to be pretty good at what they do, perhaps because they knew what they were getting themselves into, having served in the civic party 15 years ago: “You know when you take it on, it’s going to be very hectic and you accept that you’re going to use a year of your life to do the things. But you wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“Our general principal is if people invite us, we’ll go.”

So hectic in fact, that The Lady Mayoress keeps a record: “I keep a diary and I write in it, quite thoroughly. Keith was Sheriff 15 years ago and I’ve still got the diary that I had then - so I sometimes look back and it’s interesting to see the changes, and in fact some of the events are almost identical. I also write on there what I wore to each do, because you might be going back to see the same people.” It sounds like it’s a worthwhile job though: “There’s always something that you can learn and the people that you meet are from all walks of life, but I think until you do this job, you don’t realise quite the variety of organisations and amazing people that there are in York.” Liberal Democrat, Cllr Keith Orrell didn’t get to put aside his councillor duties either - he still serves Huntington and New Earswick, with his fellow councillors taking on a heavier share of the work. It’s all change for the ward too, of course there’s now the Vanguard shopping centre and the new stadium which should be ready in about a year. We’ve talked about work, but I know what you guys want to know really. Yep, do they watch Love Island? “Lady

YORK LIFE

“The Lady Mayoress is a (LOCAL LINK) reader.” Mayoress decided she had to watch it, because everybody was talking about it. So we watched one episode and said ‘That’s enough’,” 10/10 for honesty from the Lord Mayor there, and more importantly do they read Your Local Link? K: “The Lady Mayoress is a reader. I confess that I don’t” J: “But I tell you if I think there’s anything you should know about. I think it’s a very useful magazine. And we have used people who advertise.”

The Lord Mayor’s chosen charities this year are: The York Blind and Partially Sighted Society, The Island and the Music Hub. To raise money for these great charities there will be the annual Lord Mayor’s Ball at the NRM on 16th February. Anyone can book tickets for the event which will have a nine piece band with interactive and explorative themes to keep guests entertained. Tickets can be purchased from www.lordmayoryork.co.uk

IBEAT HEART WATCH. Your smartwatch might already possess a heart rate monitor, but can it save your life by alerting the emergency services that you’re about to have a heart attack? Nope. The iBeat Heart Watch can, continuously scanning your pulse and changes in oxygen levels as it does, automatically calling a doctor if it detects something worrying. Granted, this isn’t for everyone, but if you’re a high-flying exec who daily tackles the stresses of being the boss, it could keep your down-trodden employees from celebrating... sorry, ‘being devastated by’... the news of your untimely demise. Looks pretty flash, too. n £249 from www.ibeat.com

SPORT

Local

Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.

Talk about de ja vu. York City supporters ready with optimism before a ball is kicked, and new signings on a par with Messi and Ronaldo, only to succumb to Chorley on the opening day and everyone is a failure. To be fair I was one of those making the journey to Lancashire where the Minstermen went down to a solitary goal. A disappointing result and second half performance, but after supporting York City for 26 years nothing really surprises me. However, there was something I hadn’t seen before, and that was reading in the build up that the Chorley manager Jamie Vermiglio wasn’t going to be at the game because he was on holiday. I have never heard anything like it. Imagine Pep Guardiola saying I think I'll miss the Huddersfield game as I'm gonna sun it for a few days. In fairness, he could get away with it, and Vermiglio sort of did too! However, come Tuesday night, under the lights of Bootham Crescent, City responded with a cracking win against promotion favourites Stockport County and all

30

was forgiven; every signing was now a masterstroke by manager Martin Gray. I am sure by the time of reading that will have happened back and forth a few times and many won’t be convinced until they see York with a ten point lead at the top of the National League North table. TRANSFERRED I am writing this article shortly after the transfer window has closed. Another few hours wasted on my part watching Sky Sports getting excited about very little. Some reporter was splashed by a passing car which was replayed about 86 times during a two-hour period. Man United went from targeting Toby Alderweireld, to Jerome Boeteng, to Harry Maguire, to Kurt Zouma; literally A-Z and they still didn’t sign a centre half. To think all they needed was a steady, experienced pro in their backline and Danny Parslow wasn’t approached. York City seemed to do their transfer business early with most signed on the dotted line before pre-season started. The last one through the door was my personal favourite, Joe Tait, with whom sharing a surname has allowed the dream of a last minute goal from Tait to have a chance of becoming a reality. NEW KID ON THE BLOCK York has a new professional boxer in Huntington’s Michael Fafera. Michael,

who trains at the TSM boxing club on Boroughbridge road under trainer Steve Melton, has recently signed pro terms with established professional boxing manager, York’s Glenn Banks. Michael has only been boxing for the last three years and has racked up an impressive record of 15 wins out of 16 contests on the European boxing federation semiprofessional circuit, including winning a prize fighter tournament as the underdog, winning three fights in one night and winning a prize of £10,000. Fafera's professional debut will take place at Hull City Hall on Friday 7th September. Popular Fafera has already sold over 100 tickets and is in full camp, which includes early morning runs with trainer Steve Melton, to sparing all over England to ensure his debut is a successful one. Manager Banks is excited and proud that Michael and Steve have trusted him to guide his professional boxing career. Anyone interested in supporting Michael can buy tickets from Glenn at 07842 464466. All support is massively appreciated.

YORK CITY PAST PLAYERS CHARITY GOLF DAY Twenty-six teams competed in this years’ York City Past Players Charity Golf Day at Pike Hills Golf Club. Many former City players, including Joe Neenan, Gerry Baker, Alan Woods, Michael Ingham and Andy McMillan, joined with supporters and local golfers in what started as a sunshine filled day, but by mid-afternoon the thunderstorms had started and when the lightning appeared, play had to be abandoned for the safety and well-being of the players. Fortunately, most teams had completed the course with former centre-back, David Spofforth and his “Strenny Lads” who topped the leader board with 99 points, winning the “wrapped trophy”. In second place with 97 points came Pocklington Window Centre and coming in a very strong 3rd place with 94 points were “Pike Hills Oddballs” including former goalkeeping star, Michael Ingham. Ex-goalkeeping legend, Graeme Crawford, presented a cheque for £2500 to Julie Russell, General Manager of York Against Cancer.

A CAR TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY The newly released Kia Ceed, GDi Blue Edition DCT 5dr Auto impressed, our very own Stig, Jason Chinnian out on the roads…

A stunning sporty five door hatch back is sat waiting for me at S.G. Petch, Monks Cross. Powered by a 1.4 petrol turbo engine and rumoured to have had the design input of the BMW M5 chief designer, it’s looking good. The car looks sharp and aggressive, relatively low and sporty with a dark air-intake front grille and spoiler. Angled lights offer futuristic appeal, while the alloys are a gun metal grey, accentuated by low-profile tyres. The interior is upmarket class: leather seats, headrest and dashboard, complimented with all the latest mod cons including a sat nav display, DAB based in-car entertainment and AUX-in for phones and MP4s. The driver seat is easily adjustable allowing for a comfortable driving position and provides a sporty snugness. The leather steering wheel adds to the refinement and feels good with all the expected controls present. Indicators and light switches are exactly where they should be. Excellent visibility comes in the form of a wide view to the left and right making for safer driving. The rear-view mirror

is easily adjustable and gives a good view through the back windscreen. The auto gear lever is nice and chunky with a button on its right to allow for re-positioning. The pedals look sporty and feel light.

POWER ON Turning the ignition on starts the process of lights coming on, the sat nav coming to life and the dashboard display showcasing lots of pertinent information. What surprises me is the silence of the engine. You can’t be sure if it’s actually ticking over when you stop at a junction. The engine is environmentally friendly because it cuts out when you are stationary. It then starts up again once you press the accelerator. This technology still amazes me. The response of the car, on accelerating, is excellent. There’s little engine noise as it goes through the gears. The turbo feels like it’s kicking in even at these lower revolutions whilst driving in traffic through Huntington and Haxby. It makes for a smooth gear transition with no detectable lag. In fact, acceleration is quick. The brakes are, as

with any new car, outstanding and take a little getting used to. The A64 gives me the opportunity to really open it up, unleashing the roar of the turbo as the higher revs are reached. The ride still feels smooth and the handling exceptional. The car is incredibly responsive, simply going where you point it. On approaching the numerous roundabouts on the York bypass handling round the corners is firm and self-assured making for a sporty yet safe drive.

their showroom on Jockey Lane at Monks Cross in Huntington. You can be assured of a warm and courteous welcome.

IN CONCLUSION All in all, this car is a pleasure to drive. It looks the part and comes with most of the extras you would need to keep you in touch with the modern world. It also drives well, comfortably and safely allowing you to feel confident behind the wheel. The turbo kicks in when needed and there is no discernible lag when accelerating. The price for this Kia Ceed 1.4 T GDi Blue Edition DCT 5dr is £22,195 OTR with the range starting at £18,295. This is definitely a car to be seriously considered if you are looking to swap this September. Book a test drive by calling the Kia specialist at S.G Petch on 01904 466600 or simply call in to

YOUR LOCAL LINK’S STIG, JASON CHINNIAN, IS HAVING QUITE THE MONTH. LUCKY THING! THIS TIME HE TAKES THE VW T-ROC FOR A SPIN ABOUT TOWN.

The VW T-Roc is described as a ‘head turner’ by the manufacturer and I have to hand it to them: it certainly is. Aggressive looking, boxy with a squared front end that has echoes of the Evoque. It caused cars to slow down and passersby to stop and take a second glance as we photographed it. The front screen angles back elegantly and the rear a little more upright allowing for a rear side that sticks out a little. The body sits proud atop the standard 17” alloys and begs to be adored with its sporty grille and side foot panels. This 2.0TDi 4Motion vehicle falls into the SUV [sports utility vehicle] category but with the added bonus of a sportier feel and ride suggesting better and more responsive handling coupled with faster acceleration. With side foot panels, entering the vehicle is made quite simple, and gives you the feeling that you are stepping into a larger and taller car. The seats are comfortable and can be adjusted to suit. The driving position is standard and allows for good visibility all round.

It made pulling out at difficult junctions, such as at the cross roads on Crichton Avenue by the railway bridge, or turning right on Burton Stone Lane onto the top of Bootham to head away from town, far less stressful and much safer. This car was becoming a joy to drive. It handles like a much smaller car and accelerates through the six-speed gear box very smoothly and quickly. The interior display gives you lots of important information including what gear you are in and what gear to move up to: Clever stuff. The steering is light and responsive and definitely feels sporty when coupled with the acceleration. There are various driving modes accessed via a rotary dial on the centre console. Modes include On-road, Offroad, Off-road Individual and Snow. The interactive touch display is cutting edge technology. You can simply move your hand towards it and it comes on. You can access key information such as the satellite navigation system, in-car entertainment and mobile phone functions as well other mod cons on it.

The display is also utilised for the rear view imaging when reversing. It shows the distance from rear obstacles and various angles allowing you to turn and reverse and pull away without collision. This proved very helpful when conducting a three-point turn on the rather narrow Ratcliffe Street, just off Burton Stone Lane, with cars parked on both sides of the road. It meant I was still aware of the clearance as I moved away and knew I would not clip the car in front of me. There is plenty of seat space in the rear for three adults and the boot is pretty accommodating too with space for probably 4 sets of golf clubs and a trolley or two. This car has it all: looks, performance, mod cons and the functionality to give you a safe yet sporty driving experience.

Prices start from only £18,995 for the base model rising to £30,775 for the top of the range R Line 2.0TDi 4Motion. The model test driven [2.0TDi 4Motion] is priced at £28,850. To appreciate the view as you approach it and the view from behind the wheel visit take a trip to JCT600 Volkswagen up at Clifton Moor or call them to book a test drive on 01904 829852. They will even deliver the car to your home or place of work giving a test drive window of 24hours if need be.

YOUR HOME & GARDEN

ASK THE EXPERT MATT TODD

SCORCHIO! SIZE ISN’T

EVERYTHING...

That was one of the best words my thirteen year old son used to describe the amazingly great weather this summer. It’s the longest spell of sunshine I can remember and got me thinking about how we could maybe enjoy any future fine weather by preparing our outdoor spaces to give us more flexibility and enjoyment. Due to the usual vagaries of the Great British weather, a bit of time and money spent preparing your garden can pay dividends when the clouds roll in. We work with garden designers to install outdoor heating, lighting and sound systems into water-tight spaces like gazebos and summer houses. Richard Keast from Astek Garden Design & Build, says, “We have seen an increase in the need for outdoor garden rooms, along with integrated systems such as lighting, garden speakers and heating from our clients. It’s easy to see why, helping to create that useable space within the garden to enjoy”.

THEN THERE WAS LIGHT Lighting in particular can dramatically alter the look of your garden when

the sun goes down, but a bit of extra warmth and your favourite track playing from a outdoor speaker will extend your time in the fresh air and add an extra dimension to the pleasure you can get from your outside spaces. If you want to take your food preparation to the next level then an outdoor kitchen could be the thing for you. Existing BBQs can be complemented with dishwashing and wine chilling appliances to make sure everything is on hand to make your sausages really sizzle. If you love spending time in your garden, whether it’s for relaxation or entertaining, and you would like to look at some options to make it useable for longer in the year, or add some more theatre, then please get in touch with us.

Let’s face it, we’re not all blessed with a big bathroom, and it’s the small spaces that give us the extra headache. If you have a small bathroom, trying to make everything fit in the available space is like doing a puzzle. Among the challenges is how to fit everything in with enough space so it’s useable and so that it conforms to regulations. If you have a small space, here are my top tips: • Install a corner basin or even a corner WC. Sometimes even a pedestal basin can disrupt the only available traffic lane in a bathroom. By placing either a basin or the WC pan in a corner of the room, you can avoid the need to walk around one thing to get to another. • Use wall mounted where possible. Besides just visually helping the bathroom appear bigger, mounting anything above the floor frees space for small items storage. • Get rid of right angles. Tight spaces can make sharp corners hip and trip hazards. Opt for rounded shower enclosures or rounded vanity units. • Don’t be scared of large tiles. A large-scale pattern can trick the eye into seeing expanded space. The square

footage might stay the same, but the bathroom will feel bigger. • Skip the shower door. Shower doors can close an area in quite quickly. Go for clear glass panels which can be seen through easily for a more streamline look. • Expand the mirror. In the tightest spaces, having a mirror stretch across the wall can enable two people to use it at once. In less-than-ideal space conditions, every inch helps. Here at JDL we will show you how your bathroom looks with our 3D design service before we install it – give us a call and we’ll show you what miracles can be worked!

YOUR HOME & GARDEN

Spring Flowering Bulbs

After the heat of the summer months has started to cool and the long lazy evenings are becoming shorter, (some of the extremely organised amongst us may even be planning Christmas shopping,) the last thing on anybody’s mind will be spring colour in the garden. However, now is exactly the right time to start planning your tubs, beds and borders. Bulbs can make a beautiful addition to any garden, either in an existing border or planted in strategically placed tubs. Many people don’t bother with bulbs

because they think they are a nuisance and hard work, but bulbs will give years of pleasure without needing more than minimal maintenance. Some bulbs may need lifting seasonally, or you may just prefer to not have them in the garden whilst they are dying down. Plant a number of bulbs into an aquatic basket (which has slits all around the sides and the bottom) and plunge the whole basket under ground, then they will grow happily and you can lift the whole thing later to move them. This also gives a greater impact when planting bulbs in clumps.

Good results Bulbs are also fun for children to grow, with some giving quite quick results. For example Colchicum can be grown without compost. Simply place your

bulb on a saucer on the windowsill and watch it grow and flower. An old favourite for children is the Hyacinth which again doesn’t need compost: fill the bottom of a hyacinth glass with water and place the bulb in the top, as it grows the roots will come out and

make sure that you have purchased the correct bulbs. There are varieties that have been specially ‘prepared’ for early indoor flowering. Hyacinth ‘Pink Pearl’ and Hyacinth ‘Delft Blue’ well known, Narcissus ‘Paperwhite’ are also prepared for early flowering.

find the water. Crocus are another bulb with quick results, three varieties will flower in autumn. Crocus Kotschyanus Zonatus, Crocus Sativus and Crocus Speciosus.

It’s not just your garden you could be planning; bulbs are a great gift idea for friends and family. They come ready wrapped in boxes or bags so you don’t even have to do that. Amaryllis bulbs make good Christmas gifts and can last for years. So go down to your local garden centre today and take a look at the amazing colour range that could be flowering in your garden next spring.

A popular present to give at Christmas is a planted bowl of Hyacinths. Narcissus can also be in flower before Christmas, but it isn’t just a case of planting them very early, you have to

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask

Q.

CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES

My pear tree leaves have brown and black blotches on them. What is this, and could you help solve the problem, please?

This sounds like Pear leaf blister mite. The symptoms are irregular pink or yellow blisters that appear on young pear leaves in spring, and, as the leaves age during the summer and autumn, these blisters turn brown and black. Severely infested leaves might be killed and the growth of young shoots might be checked. Some other host plants, especially apples, cotoneaster, rowan, whitebeams and wild service trees, are occasionally attacked by this or by closely related species. These symptoms may be confused with those of pear leaf-curl disease. Adult mites overwinter under bud scales and feed on young leaves, causing blistering. Mite colonies then develop within the tissues and breeding continues throughout the summer. Mites move out of the infested leaves just before leaf-fall in autumn and seek

overwintering sites in dormant buds. If possible, remove and destroy affected leaves as soon as they are seen. No effective chemicals are available to gardeners for this problem, I’m afraid. Best of luck!

Q.

I would like to grow hydrangeas in my borders. Could you please give me some advice about growing them? Hydrangeas are shrubs grown for their decorative flowers, and these delightful plants may be used in several ways. Larger varieties look well as part of a shrubbery or as hedging, as well as making excellent architectural plants at the back of herbaceous and mixed borders. They are often planted besides

gates and entrances to extend a cheerful welcome to visitors.

BROWN NURSERIES

Most varieties thrive in sun or partial shade and will tolerate almost any soil type as long as it is both moist and well-drained. The hortensias are the most instantly recognizable members of the hydrangea family, also known as mopheads. The large, domed flower heads are made up of dense clusters of mainly sterile flowers. Their colour depends both on the variety you choose, and the nature of the soil. White varieties are unaffected by the soil type, but others may be blue, pink, purple, or red depending on the acidity of your soil. Acid soils with plenty of available iron will provide brilliant blue or purple blooms, while alkaline or neutral soils will bring forth gorgeous pink and red flowers.

Chris Brown If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. or call Chris on 766266. This is because the iron in low-acid soils cannot be readily taken up by the plant’s roots. It is also possible to buy hydrangea colourant which is available at garden centres. Pruning should be left until early spring, as the old flower heads will look wonderful with frost on them over winter, and they also protect the plant from damage. Small plants should not be pruned, but older plants can be reduced by one third. Hydrangeas must have plenty of moisture during the growing season. Water during dry spells, and mulch in early spring. Container plants need feeding and watering regularly in the growing season, and all types benefit from a top dressing of well-rotted manure in early spring.

Cabbage Patch Woes If you regularly grow brassicas (members of the cabbage family) you’ll be aware that they do have quite a number of pests. Wood pigeons are an all year round menace, but in the summer and early autumn it’s insects that can be most damaging. This hot summer seems to have brought on an early and sustained assault on brassicas from both caterpillars and aphids. Caterpillar attack on brassicas is usually presaged by clouds of white butterflies fluttering over the cabbage patch. It’s often assumed these are all the same, but there are two species, the large cabbage white (Pieris brassicae) and the small cabbage white (Pieris rapae). The distinction is important because it’s the first of these, the large cabbage white, that’s potentially the most damaging and the one to really watch out for. It is the butterfly responsible for the clusters of bright yellow eggs that hatch into hairy yellow and black caterpillars. Left unchecked these can rapidly skeletonise plants. CREEPS The small cabbage white has far less conspicuous pale green caterpillars that tend not to appear in

EXPERT

clusters like those of the large cabbage white. Although they don’t usually skeletonise plants, their habit of boring into the heart of cabbages can lead to unpleasant surprises at harvest time. There is a third caterpillar that attacks brassicas; that of the cabbage moth. This has a podgy look and is usually greenish brown in colour. Like the small cabbage white it doesn’t hatch from egg clusters and tends to prefer the heart of plants. Unless you get a thrill from hunting caterpillars, the most effective way of trying to combat them all is exclusion through the use of fine netting, usually sold as anti-butterfly net. This has been my preferred control method in recent years but it is not fool proof. It’s difficult to secure the net so there aren’t gaps at ground level through which butterflies will squeeze. What’s more, if the net isn’t hung so as not to droop onto the top of the plants, difficult with taller growers such as sprouts and broccoli, butterflies will

Tony Chalcraft lay eggs through it onto leaves. BACK OF THE NET Another problem with anti-butterfly net is that it may provide a protected haven for other pests that it is not fine enough to exclude. This brings me to this year’s second plague on brassicas: mealy cabbage aphid. If you’re not familiar with this it appears as greyish white patches, sometimes said to resemble cigarette ash, on brassica leaves. Close inspection will reveal the patches to be conglomerations of small aphids. These suck the sap from plants giving affected areas a whitish-yellow, blistered appearance. Small plants can be completely crippled, larger ones marred and stunted. So far this year, despite the clouds of white butterflies menacingly dancing over my brassicas, it’s the mealy cabbage aphid that’s been the biggest nuisance. It can be controlled by squashing and rubbing off the plants. The problem is the anti-butterfly net makes getting at it difficult!

YOUR FAMILY

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.

THE RIFT web-encrusted loft to the damp misery of the children's sandpit in November, I concluded that her keys, like the remote and dear Woo, had gone.

It started with the Roku remote. “Can't work Netflix!”, shouted my daughter, back when she had only the one brother, and he was but a doughy pudding of coos and dribble. “Telly not work!” Answering her screams, I gleaned the remote control to the Roku player had vanished. Despite spending the following days searching our house, the remote was never found. Time passed, a new Roku was purchased, and children did as children do and grew, grew, grew. “Can't find Woo!” said daughter, still struggling with

the letter R, Jonathan Ross style. “Woo, the kanga-woo! He's gone!” I search for said “Woo”, over-turning every piece of furniture, every rug, every wobbling toddler wrapped around my shin, so as to ensure a peaceful night's sleep without intermittent screams of “I WANT WOO!”. Alas, Woo was never seen of again. Yet more time slipped away. “Where are my keys?” asked wife, one hurried morning. Lending her mine to see her on her way, and after spending the entire day searching the house, from

SIGNIFICANCE I'm pretty sure you've experienced similar moments; when things get lost and occasionally stay that way. However, not that my life and experiences are in any way more significant than your own (except that from a relative point of view they clearly are), I'm quite sure that your home wasn't built on a rift in the space/time continuum. Mine was. I did the research. This row of houses, in good old Holgate (address withheld to stop fans pestering me as I leave the

drive each day, obvs.), was built between the late 1930s and late 1940s. It seems, according to said research which was done while sat on the toilet, that construction was halted for a time. One would assume that was because of the Second World War, but I've never been one for simple assumptions. What if the delay was caused by the discovery, somewhere in the vicinity of what would later be my living room, of a spatial rift? What if a tear, a fissure, a gaping hole in the fabric of reality was potentially unearthed by the builders back then? POOR LAD Maybe it started with the odd shovel going missing. Then a brick or two. Before anyone knew what was happening, George, the rosy-cheeked apprentice, not a day older than 15, yelped in anguish one sunny afternoon, then completely vanished. Like the remote, like Woo, like my wife's keys some seven decades later, poor George

understand the rift were hampered by the impending threat of Nazi invasion? Perhaps the only logical thing to do would be to cover it up with several feet of concrete and leave it for later study, once the war had ended. But... What if those same scientists charged with studying the Holgate rift had all perished during the war? A direct hit on their research lab in London during the Blitz might have wiped them all out. And what if everyone who had known about the anomaly also died in the war; from the builders called up to fight in France, to the local officials in York, possibly killed in the Baedeker air raids? UNKNOWN So, once the war finally ends, and the Holgate development begins again,

this time with a brand new work crew, who is to say that my house wasn't just built according to the original plans, directly on top of the dimensional rift? It remained there, occasionally opening wide enough to swallow the odd object, causing the occupants to misinterpret it as 'things just going missing'. Fools. I'm recounting this now, even after six years of potential space/time loses, because this month I started to hear the voice. I'm no believer in ghosts, but I am a believer in the multiverse theory: countless universes existing in parallel. What if the rift is a gateway to another universe, where George, now 90, still resides and is still desperately trying to return to this universe (which I think of as the Prime Universe, or Universe A, as arrogant as that might seem)? Is it George I can hear late at night, when all things quieten, and my mind wonders? Are George's crepuscular calls through the rift those of desperation and fear, trapped as he is in a nightmare realm of untold horrors? Or are his muffled words warnings about our own world? Maybe his universe doesn't have Trump or Brexit or the disconcerting rise of the right? Further study is required, and, perhaps one day soon, an attempted trip through the rift myself. At least to find Woo so my daughter shuts up about it. Wish me luck. Maybe. In other news, our baby is teething at the moment and I'm not getting all that much sleep. That's beside the point, but thought you should know.

On 5th August, 30 gallant runners from Garbutt + Elliott, accountancy legends, tackled the York 10K to raise funds for their two chosen Yorkshire charities. The team managed to raise £2000 for the Special Care Baby Unit at York Hospital, and Our Angels, a charity that helps parents deal with the loss

We hear from Laurie Prime of York Yoga Studio

ideal for expressing your individual it y Chatting with some yoga students after class one evening, I was dismayed to hear one talking about a programme about yoga that she had seen on television recently. She had come in to find her husband watching the tv with an expression of bemusement on his face. The programme showed a ‘typical’ yoga class – only it was filled with young, slim, beautiful, flexible bodies, contorting into amazing shapes

and gracefully pressing into handstands and impressive inversions. ‘See’, he said truculently, ‘this is why I won’t come to yoga with you – I could never do that! I wouldn’t fit in.’ She laughed as she described how astonished she was that he might have believed she could do those poses. And of course, he did know better – he knew his wife of 30 years was not a secret gymnast! While there are some amazing yoga practitioners around who certainly can execute the most challenging asanas, the truth about most yoga classes is very different. What does an average yogi look like? Well, they’re basically human. About the only physical requirement is a head – a full complement of arms, legs, eyes and ears is not required. Yogis come in all shapes, sizes, ages, genders, colours, ethnicity, religious and political persuasions. Flexibility is not required - it will come as a by-product of a consistent practice, but it is not really even a goal. Strength is important, but you don’t have to be strong to start

yoga– it too will come as a result of your practice. Yoga, while including a physical practice, is not an exercise or a sport, it is not a group activity or in any way competitive. It does take a lot of hard work to press up into a handstand, and we certainly respect the effort that goes into that achievement, but that is only one small aspect of a yoga practice. The single most important quality that yogis share is a desire to be more aware, to deepen the connection between their minds and their bodies, and to feel calmer and more relaxed in their daily lives. So what you really find in a ‘typical’ yoga class is a group of individuals, looking and behaving as individual as they are, working at their own levels towards their own unique development. Here at York Yoga Studio we are proud of the diversity of our yoga students - our classes don’t look anything like that television programme and my friend’s husband would fit right in! We take great pleasure in welcoming complete beginners and offer specific

Beginners Classes for those who might be shy about joining a mixed level class. If you are comfortable in mixed level groups, our All Levels Classes welcome beginners too. And we also offer stronger practices for those who relish the handstand challenge. Whichever class you choose, be assured that you will fit in just fine and there will be nothing ‘typical’ about it!

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU

Resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, talks skin care.

TURN BACK TIME As summer draws to a close and we settle back into our usual routine and patterns, it’s a great time to review skin care routines and replenish after an especially long stint of fun in the sun this year. RETRIDERM AND VITAMIN A When skin matures, it’s best to adopt an anti-ageing regime to combat the harsh effects of time. Aiding rejuvenation and tackling the signs of ageing is achievable with a little help. The best treatments help stimulate and replenish many of your skin’s natural qualities. Retriderm harnesses the qualities of Retinol, a naturally available form of Vitamin A that can be found in our diet and in our own bodies. The unique, patent serums optimise the availability of retinol that can get to work in our skin, while minimising irritation. Skin looks and feels great after the intensive 24 week programme. Expect to see smoother skin with fewer lines

and wrinkles plus a brighter, more youthful complexion. The programme is designed to get maximum results from Retriderm™, a clinically proven range that uses vitamin A to regenerate skin. The first phase of the programme gives your skin a chance to acclimatise to the products before stepping up to an intense four week period to really tackle those tell-tale signs of ageing. You’ll then step back down and settle into a regime that will enhance the results that you’ll have already seen, and that you can maintain over time. OBAGI VITAMIN C Sun worshipers may see sings of ageing sooner than others. Overtime UV damage, environmental factors and natural ageing take their toll. But sun damage alone can cause wrinkles, noticeable changes in skin texture, reduced elasticity, and discolouration.

Free radicals – tiny, unstable oxygen molecules that are naturally present in our environment – also cause skin damage. To correct and prevent the sign of damage and ageing, it is important to incorporate a topical antioxidant into your daily routine. Daily use of topical anti-oxidents can: • Neutralise free radicals to prevent future skin damage • Help correct signs of sun and environmental damage • Revitalise skin by stimulating collagen production and increasing elasticity • Result in lighter, brighten and softer skin Obagi’s line of Vitamin C products is formulated with L-ascorbic acid to help defend against the visible signs of skin aging. Vitamin C has many useful benefits: • Helps minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

PERSIMMON HOMES

Germany Beck Street

After a long journey Persimmon Homes and Charles Church are set to release their much anticipated first phase of new homes for sale at Germany Beck in York.

It hasn’t been plain sailing as we found out in this exclusive interview with Persimmon Homes Yorkshire’s managing director Simon Usher. How long has it taken to get to this point where you can now release for sale? “Far too long! – Persimmon gained a contractual interest in the land in 1989” “With the average age of a first-time buyer now circa 30 years old at least people have had adequate notice this was coming!” The people of York won’t have been able to escape the well-publicised trials and tribulations of this site. How do you feel now that it is taking shape? “I’m extremely proud of my team and what they have achieved. We have had to be resilient in the face of a multitude of technical and legal challenges, and we have learnt a lot along the way.” “Having been the managing director for

the last five years it is a true privilege to be at the helm at the point when the site has come to fruition.” How many new homes are you building at Germany Beck and how long will it take to build out? “There is approval in place for 655 new homes ranging from one-bedroom apartments to large five-bedroom detached homes. Both Persimmon Homes and Charles Church will be offering new homes for sale throughout the development.” “How long the development will take largely depends on market conditions, but interest on our database is strong, so between five and seven years is my current estimate.” Why do you think there is so much interest in the new homes? “Having moved to York five years ago I know first hand what is so attractive

Street Scene - Plots 1-11

about the quality of life here. There hasn’t been a great deal of new building going on for a while, and so there is definitely pent up demand for traditional family homes in good locations. Germany Beck offers a great location in terms of its access to York city centre and has an unrivalled local environment” “People moving to Germany Beck will have the benefit of not only a lovely new home, but they will also be subscribing to a way of life because the site abuts a vast area of nature conservation providing lovely walks and recreation opportunities.” York can be an expensive place to live do you think enough people will be able to afford to live here? “House prices in York are relatively expensive, but with interest rates still at historically low levels, a wide range of lenders in the market and access to

schemes such as the Government’s Help to Buy our customers are often pleasantly surprised at what they can afford after talking to our sales advisers and panel of independent mortgage brokers.” Isn’t there a shortage of tradespeople, how will you keep up with demand? “We know that there are enough tradespeople in York, it is just that many have got so used to travelling out of the city for work. We want them to be able to work on their own doorstep and are very keen to hear from bricklayers, joiners and plasterers who want to do that.” n Persimmon Homes have placed an advert for tradespeople in this edition of Local Link – See below.
