GROWING PAINS

Change is a fickle old thing. In the past I would spend days fending it off. Other times I’ve been chomping at the bit, desperate for it to come. Sometimes I zone back into life and realise that it happened while I was busy worrying about something else entirely. Change is happening at YLL HQ. You can feel it when you walk through the door first thing on a morning and when you’re impatiently waiting for the kettle to boil through the 3pm lull. Some of the change has already happened and if you’re eagle-eyed, you’ll have noticed. KRYSTAL

There’s the new branding, the fact that we are now printed on 100% recycled paper, and of course this Editor’s Letter. Hello, how you doing? Nice to meet you. Today’s landscape changes faster than any that came before it. It’s an exciting time to live in, and sometimes a scary one. Change often comes when you accept criticism and turn it into something good. This isn’t a natural reaction for me. I prefer sulking. Because when there’s growth, there’s pain and that’s the sea that our office has been sailing on this month. We’ve

been bickering over map design, re-hashing paragraphs and grumbling at our desks. But what it’s all boiled down to, is the fact that we’ve been making room for better things to come. Stage two of our beautiful re-branding project is nearly complete and the preliminary stages of something EVEN MORE EXCITING have begun forming. Watch this space. We’re moving forward with our Ultra Fibre Optic city by paying our online presence some TLC – you’ll find us filming local businesses, covering the funniest events and generally keeping you lot close, because you’re our

favourites and you make us what we are. We’re also patching in our Southern, tech-savvy, events-mad writer, Claire with a new monthly opinion column. Yes! Change is great! But don’t worry, we can appreciate that some things really ought to stay the same. Our puzzles are going absolutely nowhere, the events diary is as packed as ever and you can still cringe at Rachel Ragg’s column. We know a good thing when we see it. Here’s to change!

YORK BALLOON FIESTA. This stunning spectacle of an event is back for 2019 – and is set to be bigger and brighter than ever! From live music to food and drink; fun fairs to, of course, lots of hot air balloons - your whole family will have a blast. Find out more in our events section. Photo credit: Charlotte Graham.

14. CLAIRE. Wait, what? Who’s Claire? Where’s Krystal’s Gems? Don’t worry, we’ve not been hijacked. Claire’s our Events Writer and online Tech Guru, and she’s been entrusted with her very own column. Her first one’s about being a Southerner. Booooo. And fret not, Krystal’s not left Your Local Link magazine either. In fact, she’s only gone and become the Editor of the whole damn thing. Don’t miss her Editor’s Letter on page 6.

FEATURES 20-21. TIME TRAVEL. Ever wanted to learn about Davy Hall? Never heard of it? Don’t worry, neither had we. It’s not existed in York for a long time – but we’ve done our research and now we can share with you the story behind it. And royalty. Yeah, we talk about the monarchy, too. Because why not? 18-19. WALKING WITH THE WANDERER. This month our Wanderer is wandering through Tockwith and the River Nidd. You won’t need a swimming cozzie though - just grab those walking boots, shove your Pac a Mac into your rucksack and don your sunglasses (you never know, we might see some sun). It’s time to get trekking. 47. A-Z OF ROAD SAFETY. It’s time for the little ones to go back to school – and for a lot of parents that means anxiety in the knowledge that their children will be crossing roads on their own. Have no fear – we’ve put together an A-Z of Road Safety to give you all peace of mind.

10-11. YORK LIFE. Isn’t it lovely when you do a good deed and you’re rewarded with a week’s worth of good fortune in return? Well, that’s what’s supposed to happen. But when Rachel Ragg ‘fessed up about having not already paid for a skirt she ordered, she was instead repaid with a losing lottery ticket, ticket, taking a heavy bag of tiles on an unnecessary trip to Leeds and getting locked out of her house. 42-43. HOWARD. Good ol’ Howard’s been to Lancaster. Out of choice. No reason other than just ‘cause. And it’s got him thinking about our lovely York…

What ’s Online Our shiny website, www.yourlocallink.co.uk, is filled with original content that you won’t find in the magazine. This month, check out…

FEATURES CLAIRE’S TECH TALK. This month’s Tech Talk is all about websites. ‘Sounds dire’, we hear you mutter. But this is Claire’s Tech Talk: so it’s never as simple as that. Our geeky girl’s found some larger-than-life sites that demonstrate exactly how extreme coding and innovative web design can leave a seriously impressive virtual footprint. CULTURE VULTURE. The lovely Anne’s been getting her theatre on this month, and she’s got lots to tell you about it all. From the Shakespeare Rose Theatre to Swallows and Amazons at York Theatre Royal, Anne’s taking the ‘culture’ part of her Culture Vulture title to the next level.

REVIEWS, REVIEWS, REVIEWS. We’ve been here, there and everywhere – and told you all about it! Pop online and find out exactly what we thought about theatre and events around York – and what to look out for. This month, Claire and Nick made it a double whammy at Castle Howard.

EVENTS GALORE! You won’t believe your eyes when you see just how many things are going on in York. Honestly. Not only have we compiled every happening we can find onto our site, but you can also upload your own event – completely FREE! Get clicking, peeps: www.yourlocallink.co.uk/events

EVENTS 52. EVENTS HOTLIST. The best of the cream. The crème de la crop. In other words, our favourite events. 53-59. Events & Gig Diary. The sun still shines in September and we’ve got just the events for you to enjoy.

Another month another set of fantabulous competitions. We want you, our lovely readers, to relax and have some ‘you’ time. So we’ve teamed up with the beautiful people at The Parsonage Hotel & Spa, who are giving away Afternoon Tea for Two, and Denny at iBalance Yoga, who’s offering a lucky reader and up to three friends a private one-to-one yoga session. Tempted? Turn to page 23 and get entering.

AND LIFE IN GENERAL It all began with a skirt.

been my size.

There I was, harmlessly trundling along Stonegate, when my eye was caught by a nice red sign in the window of the Moon Shop. “SALE”, it declared.

“Don’t worry,” said the very nice assistant. “We can order it for you from our other shop.”

Well, I am never knowingly under-saled, so I had no option but to enter.

A couple of days later, I received a call from the Moon Shop, and duly trundled back to collect said skirt.

And there it was. The skirt of my dreams, half price.

A different and equally nice assistant handed it over to me with a smile.

Or there it would have been, had it

“I haven’t paid for it yet,” I said.

Jolly good, quoth I. I gave her my telephone number and departed.

“I think you have,” she replied. “I really haven’t,” I said. Obviously, there’s nothing I’d like more than the skirt of my dreams for free, but as the Moon Shop is close to the Minster, I feared the central tower might fall on me if I failed to come clean. “I think you have,” she said. “I’ll just call the manager.” And so the manager arrived. All I can say is that the Moon Shop would have a blanket Catastrophic Fail from the York School of Charm, as he was just as nice as his assistants. “You’re quite right,” he said. “You haven’t paid. Thank you for being so honest. Lots of good things will happen to you now. It’s good karma.” Well, I’ll settle for a bit of good karma and a half price skirt any day, I thought, as I went on my merry way. I wonder what good fortune will befall me this week? I was soon to find out. Arriving home, I was greeted by a letter from the NHS. “Penalty Charge Notice”, it announced. “Total Due: £185.20”. Unbeknown to me, my pre-payment certificate had expired. I suppose I have only myself to blame for this but the amount apparently included a surcharge for failing to respond to the initial invoice, which I never received. So much for good karma. Things can only get better, I thought, as I - unusually - drove into town to collect some laundry. And indeed they

Now that’s a good idea. After so much bad luck, I am bound to win at least £10.

By this point, I was starting to wish the Man in the Moon Shop had wished me bad karma instead. Then, however, I had a sudden flash of inspiration. I have three months to return some tiles to Fired Earth in Leeds. The three months is about to expire, so this will be a good moment to recoup my some money and pay off some of the pesky fines.

Full of anticipation, I faff around on the internet trying to find out how many millions I have won. Needless to say, I have won absolutely nothing.

And so I decide to catch a Zap bus to Leeds, combining tile-depositing with meeting my sister. “Fired Earth first stop,” I say. “These tiles weigh a ton.” But what greets us? A notice on the door, informing us that the shop closed down in July. “Oh well,” my sister says. “I think the tiles wanted a day out.” They are now enjoying their nice life in a box on my worktop, the three month return period having expired. Back in York, I return to the Moon Shop, not least to look at the painted quarry tiles on their floor. “How was the skirt?” The manager asks. “The skirt was fine,” I say. “But I could have done without your good karma, as it has been a week of minor disasters.” “I’m sorry to hear it,” he says. “Perhaps you should buy a Lottery ticket?”

YORK LIFE

didn’t, as I returned from collecting said laundry to find a penalty charge notice stuck to the windscreen.

There’s nothing for it but to ring a friend to have a nice moan. For no good reason, my house has a pitiful mobile signal, so I take my phone into the garden, closing the back door behind me. Only once I have finished my tale of woe do I remember that the back door handle has stopped working, meaning that I can’t get back in. Ah well: there’s always the front door. However, the front door is locked, and the key is on the other side. I poke at the keyhole with a twig, to unsurprisingly little avail. I can’t believe I’m going to have to break into my own house. I examine the back of it. I could use a handy ladder and climb onto the extension roof and through the bathroom window. Then again, I’d probably end up falling off the ladder, so perhaps not. And so I do the sensible thing and ring my builder friend. Within half an hour, he had not only arrived but had fixed the back door handle, which had needed fixing for months. So the Man in the Moon Shop was right after all.

Doing that will really help our advertisers make great decisions about where to advertise.

Horoscopes 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT

A feeling of deflation and anti-climax bogs you down during the first week, and it won’t be ‘til the 6th or 7th that you start finding some focus and enthusiasm for both work routines and personal agendas. You’ll be feeling very claustrophobic, and while some of you may well embark upon home improvement schemes, others will be thinking about moving home, especially if there are any overseas opportunities. Long overland journeys look probable throughout the month, but there again, there is some frustration. You could

LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT

This could potentially be a sexy and exciting month for single lady Librans who are prepared to have some fun and live dangerously. Everyone else slogs along with the ‘same-old-same-old’, and middleaged males will be feeling old beyond their years. Business and career aspects are quite good around the 18th to 21st, especially for the self-employed.

be driving to Middlesborough while all the time dreaming of flying to Marbella. Generally speaking, autumn is a good time of the year for Virgo-born people, but not this year, I’m afraid. Whatever you’ve got, there’s that insistent inner voice that keeps shouting “I want more! A whole lot more!” It’s a voice that will not be silenced easily, and you’re going to have to pay it some attention and do something about it before it drives you into some ill-advised impulsive action that you may have

good cause to regret afterwards. There is some harmony and happiness in affairs of the heart, but only if you can extricate your head from your own backside, and start enjoying what’s available rather than moaning about what’s not! You might feel that lovers and partners could do a lot more to help, but the fact of the matter is that they’re locked into their own psychodramas, and probably won’t make any approaches until you can articulate your own emotional needs.

NOV SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV SAGITTARIUS22ND - 21ST DEC

A bright start to the month with some changes to work routines between the 3rd and the 5th, which clearly will be to your advantage. Some interesting changes to priorities and agendas in the mid-month period, putting you in a position of having to make some awkward decisions and choices during the last few days. Can’t decide? Toss a coin!

James Christie

An interesting and thoughtful month during which you will quietly come to realise that some things you thought were impossible, might just be possible after all. This ignites a flame of excitement and new hope, and you’ll make yourself busy by doing lots of research to clarify your future options. Communication with other people is vital at this time.

22ND DEC

CAPRICORN - 19TH JAN

Although there will be issues with time management, this should be an eventful and successful month, both in the boardroom and the bedroom. As much as is humanly possible, it looks like you will be on the receiving end of the best of both worlds. Romance dominates in week one, careers are highlighted in week two, dreams lead you astray in week three, money is the key issue in week four.

VIRGO

A STROLOGIST

Minor clashes of wills between partners could get out of hand unless someone is prepared to pour oil over troubled waters and make a few compromises. Money may be the key issue in this conflict, and if you’re the one who’s earned it, just make sure you make your voice heard. True, pride comes before a fall, but principles are principles.

PISCES

19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

In any kind of legal conflict, do not back off, but fight like hell and go for the jugular vein! Professional advice is probably sound, but sadly, not necessarily so is that which is offered from friends and family. On the subject of family, a partner works hard to please, but the chances are you’ll be too concerned about children and other issues to notice.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR

Some good news on the work front, which pleases you greatly and enables you to firm up on future plans. Some discord with a lover or partner when those “plans” do not coincide with their own priorities. You’re feeling restless and brave, but a partner is feeling scared and insecure. No good losing your temper, just be very patient and keep chipping away.

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY A productive and creative month on the work scene, but you will need the co-operation of others to maximise your potential. A positive mood during the first couple of weeks becomes a mood of frustration from the 14th or 15th onwards

when things do not happen as quickly as you might wish. The 17th is a key date not so much for travel, but certainly for transport.

Gemini 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN

This is one of those months when you lurch from a crisis to a drama and back again! Some problem gets sorted out and then hey presto, another one pops up in its place. Sorting out other peoples’ affairs will take up much of your time and there could be some legal dealings, very possibly in connection with property. A physically healing period!

If there is any turbulence in emotional relationships it will be caused by outside influences, not by anything of your own doing. Therefore it might be to your advantage to keep your private life very private, and tell anyone who is trying to butt in to butt out. If this means sacrificing a fair-weather friendship, it seems to be a very small price to pay.

YORK LIFE

SHE’S ONLY GONE AND GOT HERSELF A COLUMN Guys. It’s happened. It’s actually happened. Your Local Link’s Events Writer and Tech Guru has actually been given her own opinion column in print. That’s right – I’ve been trusted with talking about absolutely nothing in particular, purely for your entertainment. Now I know what you’re thinking: “But Claire, if you’re going to rant on for a good 700 words in the place where Krystal normally rants for 700 words, then what’s happened to Krystal?!” Well, do not worry you lovely Linkers. You may have spotted as you flicked through this month’s issue that we’ve switched our usual introduction at the front for a new Editor’s Letter. And did you see who wrote it? That’s right – our girl K! She’s taken the Your Local Link helm, so her monthly musings have shifted to the front. If you missed it then head to page 6 and check out what she has to say. But you’ve got me now! And while I can’t promise to be as off-the-cuff and humorous as Krystal’s Gems, I can promise to try. I’ve already tried too hard. When thinking about what to call my new column, I thought it would be absolutely bloody hilarious to go with ‘Claire’s Column’. My name’s Claire, it’s a column, and it’s got every writer’s favourite tool: alliteration. Needless to say, my

fellow office buddies Krystal, Nick and Scott were completely silenced by this suggestion, until Krystal eventually said: “you are absolutely not doing that”. I took that as a no. So it’s that kind of humour and editorial gold that you can expect from these pages on a monthly basis. You lucky, lucky people. TROUBLE AND STRIFE This month, I’ve decided to talk to you about being a Southerner in Yorkshire. Now, before you all spit your Yorkshire Tea out on my face and rip the page out to use as a makeshift darts board, I want to reassure you: yes, I was born in Croydon, South London. But I moved to York when I was two years old. I’m now 29. Despite only spending 6.8% of my life away from York (apart from a brief time in Oxford), I’ve still got that cockney twang. I blame my parents for their South London accents. As much as I’ve tried to lose it, I still say ‘bar-th’ instead of ‘bath’. I say ‘dar-nce’ instead of ‘dance’. And even though I only have a tiny hint of the Essex dialect in my accent, I struggle to have a conversation with anyone from God’s Own County without having my native tongue absolutely ripped to pieces. “Alwight! Moy nayme’s Claire ‘n’ I’m a roight cockney geezer, innit!”

I mean, I don’t even speak like that. But if had a pound for every time someone took the mic out of my accent with a sentence similar to the above, then I might be able to afford an actual London pint. Probably just a Carling though, couldn’t afford a Birra Moretti ‘dahn saaf’ without taking out a small loan. Haha, I’m kidding, obviously. You’d need a medium loan at least for one of those blighters. KNOW WHAT I MEAN? So okay, I get picked on regularly for my ‘mispronunciation’ of words such as bath and dance. I can deal with that. But as a Southerner in Yorkshire, I’ve basically had to learn a whole new language. In my vocabulary, ‘tea’, for example, is a drink (with jam and bread if you’re a Sound of Music fan) – not an evening meal. ‘Dinner’ on the other hand IS an evening meal – not lunch. ‘Treat’ is a present tense verb or noun – never a past tense verb (pronounced by Northerners as ‘trett’). That would be treated. And don’t get me started on Yorkshire phrases. The other day, someone said: “Weather’s close today”. I mean, I just looked at them for about 30 seconds like they’d sprouted wings and taken off. I then nodded tentatively, as agreeing seemed the right thing to do in the situation, before subtly googling the term. Humid.

COLUMNIST

Claire Brooks

“Yes, it’s very humid today,” I eventually replied. Now, I’ve since been assured that ‘close weather’ is actually a widespread term and I’d just been living under a rock, therefore I can’t pin this one completely on you lovely Northerners. But rest assured, it definitely seems more popular ‘oop north’. And to be fair, we’re just as confusing. I’ve been known to use the odd bit of cockney rhyming slang, and have been on the receiving end of many a raised eyebrow after saying things like “you’re having a giraffe”, or “do me a lemon”. But hey, it takes all sorts to make the world go round. And I think Northerners are a bloody good bunch.

WANDERER WALKING WITH THE

TOCKWITH AND THE NIDD

This easy walk of about four and half miles starts from the main street of Tockwith. Heading north on paths and tracks to meet the River Nidd it then follows its twisting bank for well over a mile. Leaving the river at the site of a long lost bridge, it heads back to Tockwith down hedge-lined tracks. One of these, Moor Lane, was lined with wildflowers and alive with butterflies when walked on a summer’s day. With much of the route on firm surfaces this is also a good walk for other times of year. And it’s one that’s easy to follow. There are really only two places were there may be doubt – these are underlined in the directions below.

Directions

1 Take the signposted footpath on the north side of the main street running between the Village Hall and Spotted Ox pub (if arriving by bus this is just a little further along and over the road from the stop). Quickly pass through a metal gate to follow the narrow path along the edge of a field. In the next field go right with the path alongside the hedge. At the field corner go left to continue with the hedge still on the right. Eventually you come to the far corner of the field where, by a large ash tree, the path comes out onto a wide tarmac track. 2 Turn left here initially heading back towards Tockwith but in about 100 metres turn right at a footpath sign down Whinnythwaite Lane. Continue on this tarmac lane until it ends at a gate in front of a large barn. Turn right here at the footpath signpost along a grassed track between hedges. The track quickly leads to a kissing gate into a pasture field. Cross this straight ahead to a kissing gate on the other side. Through the gate go right alongside the hedge for about 15 metres but then turn left away from the hedge line to head across the field, aiming to pass to the left of some larger trees ahead. At the end of the field, having passed the trees, reach a kissing gate and rise up the grass bank to meet a footpath running along its top.

3 With the River Nidd below, but not visible when the shrubs are in leaf, turn right along the bank. For the next mile or more keep to the top of the bank as it twists and turns. After a while the surprisingly narrow Nidd should become visible as the vegetation thins. There’s then a stile to the right leading to an access area which you ignore. Yet further on, and with Kirk Hammerton church visible across the river, go over a stile to continue ahead, still on the bank. Pass through a kissing gate and then over more stiles near young trees. Once past the converted mill, and about 200 metres beyond the last stile, finally turn right off the bank as directed by a prominent yellow arrow. 4 Head across the grass on a slightly raised path to quickly emerge onto a stoned track where you go straight on (left). Follow this track between hedges as it bends until it arrives at a tarmac lane. Turn right here. About 600 metres down this tarmac lane keep a careful look out for an unsigned grassy track (a public bridleway) on the left guarded by a locked metal gate. (For a quicker return to Tockwith keeping on the tarmac will bring you back to point 2). Don’t get lost! Getting there Tockwith is ten miles west of York off the B1224. If driving park considerately on the main street near the pubs and the junction with Kirk Lane. Bus 412 runs from York Piccadilly and the Railway Station to Tockwith via Acomb roughly every two hours Monday to Saturday day time. Alight at the Boot and Shoe. The last bus back from Tockwith is currently at 15.33.

Refreshments There are two pubs in Tockwith, the Boot and Shoe and the Spotted Ox. The former is only open lunchtimes at the weekend. There’s also a convenience store in the centre of the village near the pubs.

What to see Tockwith is a sizeable village with a mix of building styles in the main street. The tracks leading to and from the village have thick hedgerows and wide verges with a good range of wildflowers. There’s conservation areas near the river bank and recently planted woodland at several points on the walk. On the return to Tockwith the flat fields to the east are the site of the 1644 Battle of Marston Moor, a turning point in the Civil War when the Parliamentary army defeated the Royalist forces trying to relive besieged York. A monument to the battle and an information board is situated on the road leading from Tockwith to Long Marston.

6 From here it’s a straightforward walk back to Tockwith along the surfaced track. Ignore a signed footpath off to the left keeping ahead to eventually pass houses on the right as the village is neared. Turn right when the road, the main street, is reached. A ten minute walk along the pavement, passing an unusual air crash memorial sculpture, will bring you back to the pubs at the start. If returning to York by bus here’s no need to go all the way back to the start as there’s a convenient stop about 200 metres along the street.

YORK LIFE

5 Pass through the gap to the right of the metal gate and take the dead straight track ahead between hedges (Moor Lane). In about 500 metres the track ends at another locked gate where it meets a car wide track at a right angle bend. Turn right here down the surfaced track.

YORK LIFE

TimeTravel Come with us as we journey backwards through the mists of time. No pushing at the back. THIS MONTH: DAVY HALL

If you’ve ever been fed up by all the talk of the royals, from weddings to new babies, think about your poor ancestors. Centuries ago the monarch had the power to do a lot more than bore us – they could help themselves to your food and lock you up in their own special prison. If you’ve never heard of Davy Hall, we don’t blame you. The building itself has been gone from our streets for almost 300 years… kinda. Davygate not only played host to the infamous building it but also took its name from the family who ran it.

Blame the Normans Following the Norman Conquest of York in 1069, and the bloody ‘Harrying of the North’, the new rulers established a few harsh laws in our fair city. The first was that the huge Forest of Galtres, which lay to the north of the city and was the source of much of our timber, was now the King’s. Basically, if lowly Yorkies hunted in the forest, as

they had done for centuries prior, they were now essentially pinching from the King. So they’d go to jail. Also, to ensure that the King had plenty of food when he visited York, he needed someone to gather some up from the city and keep it in a locked larder. The Lardiner, a role established in the 1130s, was responsible for such a task, and had first dibs on all the produce being sold in York’s markets. Oh, and he could take whatever he wanted without paying. So not a popular chap.

The Daves The first recorded Lardier of York was called David. So was his son who took

was because it was built up against the original surviving Roman fortress wall and permanently guarded. The intention was to constantly have a large amount of fresh meat, fish and bread, just in case the ruling monarch happened to call by.

Oh no, it’s the bloody Lardiner!

over the role after him… and his son after that. This sequence of Davids in the role of Lardiner resulted in the larder itself being known as Davy Hall. The hall sat on the present-day corner of Davygate and New Street, giving the Lardiner quick access to the popular Thursday Market, now St Sampson’s Square. The hall itself would have been an impressively large structure that was very secure. Part of the reason for this

So when this legal thief came to the market, stall holders and traders knew they would have to give him exactly what he wanted, and for absolutely no money. The cheek! It was for that very reason that multiple times throughout the life of the position, the Lardiner’s powers were challenged in the courts. In a legal battle of 1168, the Lardiner – David, obviously – not only argued that he could take what he wanted from the forest, but also from the market. He was… “…to receive of every Baker who sells Bread there every Saturday, a Halfpenny loaf, or a Halfpenny; and of every Brewer of Ale there, that sells any

Ale, a Gallon Flagon of the best Ale, or the Value of it…” …and so much more. Note that if the trader couldn’t provide the produce they had to provide the value instead. The nerve!

Banged up As well as being a huge food store (food, we assume, that would often go uneaten and wasted) Davy Hall was also a prison. If you were caught poaching in the forest of Galtres you were locked up in the Lardiner’s own personal gaol. As the hall was property of the crown, the city corporation had absolutely no jurisdiction over it and of the punishments dealt out to the poor poachers. There was some justice in 1253 following another legal challenge, this time by Lord Mayor of York John de Selby. It was decided that the King’s Lardiner could no longer take provision from the city markets but could still fine and imprison poachers. Clearly this began a decline in the fortunes of Davy

Hall, as by 1427 it lay in ruins.

Demolition The hall did last a lot longer than it had any right to, however. In the 17th century it was converted into tenements – still with the Roman walls as part of their structure. But by 1729 the city corporation wanted to improve access for carriages, especially for those heading to the new Assembly Rooms up the road in Blake street. Davy Hall was torn down and part of the land was used for a very special reason. The churchyard of St Helen’s Church was relocated to a spot of land where the hall once stood – today the open square next to Caffe Nero – while the original yard was paved over – now St Helen’s Square next to Betty’s. So the next time you yawn at the front page of a newspaper given over to a picture of Princess Charlotte looking cute, just be thankful she isn’t demanding any of your food. Not at the moment, anyway.

SPORT

Local So, the new football season is finally upon us and York City have made a positive start in their quest to finally get promoted back to the Premier Division of non-League football (and beyond) after a couple of soul-searching campaigns. At the time of writing they’ve beaten Altrincham away 3-1, drawn 0-0 at home to Farsley Celtic before seeing off Brackley Town 1-0 also at Bootham Crescent. The three points over Brackley was enough to see them take an early lead at the top of the table. Manager Steve Watson still thinks there’s more to come, which bodes well for the coming months. And, although only three games in, there definitely feels like a shift in optimism around the club – and quality on the pitch with the new signings. Despite seeing York City win a promotion a few times before, nothing would be better than seeing them escape this current regionalised League they find themselves in. The Brackley game reminded me of how far we have fallen when one of their nine away supporters ran to the top of the stand to start his own chant, arms aloft. I was too far away to hear or work out what he was singing but if it started with ‘give us a B’, it ended well before he got to ‘ackley’. The other eight supporters incidentally seemed to shuffle along to distance themselves but with that level of support it seemed a thankless task to shake him off. York City have recently set out guidelines to combat the ever-increasing use of pyrotechnics at both home and away games. A phenomenon that Leeds United used to revel scoring a third against us in a pre-season friendly, and a feat I

didn’t think was worth that much celebration given that they operate four leagues above the Minstermen. I know a number of clubs have similar concerns but north of the border, Queen of the South are taking a similar tough stance with non-compliant supporters, though not for flare-related mischief – if they feed seagulls during the game! After supporters were deliberately chucking rubbish towards crowded areas, they’ve now said people will be ejected if they repeat such actions. Higher up the football food chain and VAR has now been introduced into Premier League matches. The constant stop-start element is a real turn-off for me; appealing one decision per game would be much more preferable and less time consuming to having a potential situation where players are soon going to not celebrate until the ‘check’ has been done. I guess it could be worse; a Bolivian referee chose to refer a last minute penalty to VAR by doing the video ref signal, until someone pointed out to him that the Bolivian League doesn’t actually have access to VAR. Of course, it wouldn’t be an August review without mentioning the transfer window, which as per usual was a hyped-up anti-climax. It takes a bit more than Danny Drinkwater signing for Burnley to get me excited, but I was so much on autopilot with it all that I took Chelsea signing Dutch wonderkid Trans Fer Ban at face value. Although I did enjoy someone announcing the signing of Bosch Dishwasher from John Lewis for an undisclosed fee with older Bosch Dishwasher going the other way.

LOCAL SPORTS

COLUMNIST

You may remember in Your Local Link a few months back we featured a preview of York boxer Cam Shaw, who was about to make his pro debut. Unfortunately a couple of shows that Cam was scheduled to box on didn’t happen due to various reasons out of his control, but I’m happy to report that Cam finally made his debut on the undercard of a world title show in Rotherham at the Magna centre. Shaw comfortably beat opponent Edward Bjorkland on points, impressing trainer Billy Dawson and manager Glenn Banks, who said: “Cam won every second of every round, in complete control throughout. We were delighted

he got four rounds under his belt.” Cam sold a huge amount of tickets and appreciated that support. With his first win under his belt, Shaw’s attention now turns to Friday 4th October where he fights at Doncaster Dome on another Steffy Bull promotion, with tickets going for £40 standard and £70 VIP.

YOUR MOTORS & GADGETS

MOTORING

NEWS

FIVE MINUTE

WARNING

We all know the dangers of driving while on the phone – and that using a mobile at the wheel is against the law. But while alternative measures are available, such as hands-free kits, experts now reckon that phone calls while driving are hazards regardless of being on hands-

free – and could hinder your concentration for up to five minutes after you’ve hung up. Research has shown that drivers can be easily distracted by a phone conversation while behind the wheel, and that using hands-free kits while driving still causes them to miss hazards. Even after ending the call, drivers have been seen to stop using their mirrors or indicators in a bid to reduce their mental capacity. So we always recommend pulling over if you need to take a call, and it’s safe to do so (just not on the hard shoulder of a motorway!).

BACK TO THE FUTURE Drive-in movie theatres were all the rage back in the day. Famously depicted in American movies as the top place to go on a date (Grease, anyone?), there was nothing quite

26

like getting cosied up in your motor with popcorn and a hot dog before enjoying the latest flick under the stars. And the concept of this has made a bit of comeback this summer. From A Star Is Born at The Principal York to Bohemian Rhapsody at York Minster on the 28th August (book your tickets now if you haven’t already!), people have been flocking to the hottest sites in York with friends and family to take part in the similarly unique experience of

watching movies outside (albeit not in a car). So, that makes us wonder: what other motoring trends could be about to make a comeback? Maybe the Plymouth Fury will make a clunky return with its bonnets and boots the size of a small country; perhaps the DeLorean’s quirky gull-wing doors will appear on the next Ford Mondeo; or could Morris Minors be taking over the A64 come 2020? We’ll have to wait and see…

EXECUTOY DOCTOR WHO 11TH DOCTOR SONIC SCREWDRIVER LED TORCH You’re probably thinking ‘but Your Local Link, how can a Doctor Who-themed torch benefit my working life?’ And the answer would be ‘it can’t’. However, it can make checking under a desk for your last M&M that you dropped while trying to throw it into your mouth, or participating in an office-based duel with Bob from HR, much more exciting. This Sonic Screwdriver replica features an LED at the top, which glows green. Meaning you too can step into Matt Smith’s metaphorical shoes and take on the world. Probably the best £11.49 you’ll ever spend. • £11.49 from www.thegiftandgadgetstore.com

SHARPEN YOUR SKILLS

GOING FOR GOLD Meet Ian Fisher: Consultant at Ware & Kay Solicitors. He’s reached the big 5-0 at the firm, which has offices in York, Wetherby and Malton, and is one of the leading Wills and Probate Practitioners in Yorkshire. And because hitting this golden milestone shouldn’t be taken lightly, Ian celebrated with greyhound racing in Sheffield, accompanied by friends, family and colleagues. Not ones to miss out on a bit of out-ofoffice banter, the firm even sponsored a celebratory race called Ware & Kay: Fisher’s Nifty Fifty Fanfare! Mr Fisher is the longest-serving employee at Ware & Kay. He joined the Wills and Probate Department on 7th July 1969 – back when the firm was known as Newbald Kay & Sons and ran its office in Lendal, York. “When I first started work, all telephone calls went through a switchboard in reception. There were no direct dials and mobiles hadn’t even been invented,” Ian recalls. He started studying law in evening classes at Leeds Polytechnic, followed these with correspondence courses, and finally qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered

Legal Executives. He then became a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and went on to become the Head of Wills and Probate. Despite seeing plenty of changes to technology over the years, some things have definitely stayed the same. “One thing that hasn’t changed is the personal way we deal with our clients,” says Ian. “I’ve always been happy at Ware & Kay and still enjoy helping clients through difficult times.” And it’s not just clients that love Ian. “I’ve known Ian since 1969 and worked with him for the last 38 years. He’s always been the same friendly, caring and helpful person that clients and colleagues have enjoyed working with throughout his outstanding career,” says Peter Kay, Ware & Kay’s Senior Director. “Ian remains a great influence and inspiration for his Ware & Kay colleagues, and is in demand from clients. There’s no better testament to his friendly and approachable manner in providing first class advice and service.” Congratulations, Ian!

York is such a great place to live that it’s becoming even more attractive now to buyers who live elsewhere in the UK – the South East especially – and also to overseas buyers.

How can I target my house to non-local buyers?

How do I ensure I can target my house to non-local buyers as well as those who are moving within York? There is a very simple answer to this, which is two fold: Firstly, you need to ensure your agent is able to talk to prospective buyers outside of normal office hours. So, assume for a moment that your lovely house is appealing to a Managing Director of a firm in London. She’s working all day over very long hours and can’t call the agent between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. The chances are, the only time she has free is Sunday afternoon! So if she can’t contact the agent to discuss the house, or arrange a viewing late on a Sunday when she’s free, you won’t be able to sell your house to that potential buyer. This scenario is becoming ever more common and at Ewemove we’ve sold houses to people in Dubai and other locations around the world with similar time constraints. We’ve talked with them late in the evening and over the weekend, to provide them the information they require – and even sent them a personalised video tour of the house, so that they can engage with the property they’re keen on learning more about. The second answer lies in Rightmove and Zoopla. Rightmove is great for people in the North of England and Zoopla is more popular in the South, so unless your property is listed on both of these leading portals, your exposure to potential buyers is severely limited. ASK THE EXPERT MATT TODD

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

We love a challenge here at Todd’s, and this year’s been full of them. We managed a very respectable 2nd place in the Rotary Dragon Boat race with the help of our friends at Ged Bell Butchers – and raised over a thousand pounds for charity. We’ve also been looking to improve our website and showrooms; taken on more staff; extended our opening hours (our Monks Cross store is now open until 6.30pm during the week); and are open on bank holidays as well. However, we still wanted something to really challenge ourselves. So, in a response to many requests over the years, we’ve decided to take the plunge and help our customers to

design and install their new kitchens! We’re very excited to bring our unique customer service skills to this amazing part of the market. I know from my own experience that trying to buy a kitchen isn’t an easy job – even trying to get quotes together can seem to be an uphill struggle. But we’re committed to providing a simple, affordable and high quality solution so that customers will always have the answers they need – and ultimately, a kitchen they can be proud of. A range of kitchens by Germany’s biggest manufacturer will be available to view this autumn at our Monks Cross store, and we’ll be giving some very special prices to our first kitchen customers. If you’re interested in working with us on your project then please get in touch with our customer service manager here at john@htodd. co.uk. We’ll then keep you in the loop as to what our opening offers will be as the kitchen area in our showroom takes shape. We will, of course, announce on our ‘Twit-Face’ feeds once the new displays are ready for viewing. Finally, we hope you all had a great summer and hope to see you in store very soon.

SMART GARDENS Forget smart phones and smart homes, you can now make your garden smart, too! Outdoor technology has taken off in a big way this year, with some head-scratchingly smart gadgets to help you keep your garden happy. Enter the VegTrug Grow Care Garden. This pocket-sized garden gadget tells you all you need to know about your soil through its app, from moisture content, fertility level, temperature and light intensity. No more wondering when your plants need a water, just check your phone. • £44.99 from Robert Dyas.

If you’re against the business of lawn mowing, you’ll be happy to know that Bosch’s Indego 350, a lovely little automatic lawnmower with an intelligent Logicut navigation system, will do it for you. Burglars hoping to rob your new friend will be disappointed to find out that as soon as it leaves the defined mowing area, it locks. It will cost you a pretty penny: • £819 from John Lewis.

YOUR HOME & GARDEN

Gardening Together Nurturing plants and pottering around the garden can be very relaxing, and can provide us with some much needed time for peace, quiet and mindfulness. But gardening doesn’t have to be a solitary hobby, as great benefits can be derived from interacting with other like-minded people – to share their gardening expertise, knowledge and tips. It’s also a great way to combat loneliness, improve health and wellbeing. One idea would be to join a local gardening club, of which there are a number in the York area. These are ideal places to share and learn about

gardening experiences, ideas, skills and also discover exciting new plants, as well as making some new friends. Some gardening clubs also offer specialist talks, trips to beautiful gardens and other related events. Stately homes and gardens, arboretums and parks are also great places to visit with family or friends – not just to enjoy the sights, but because they may also spark inspiration on planting ideas that could be used in your own gardening projects. You could also consider visiting garden centres for inspiration, finding potential new and interesting plants, and of course, it’s a great place to seek out advice from staff if you have any plant or gardening related questions. COMMUNAL AREA Another avenue to explore is community gardens. These are becoming increasingly popular and they’re another great way to integrate with people in the local community, providing an opportunity to garden together and also share produce. For some, this form of social gardening can increase physical activity, decrease stress and raise mood and energy levels, which are all beneficial for our wellbeing.

Plants give us the chance to interact with others who share our interest in gardening, initiating a journey of discovery, learning about new plants from someone who has grown them, and sharing their knowledge – which in turn can give you the confidence to grow and nurture them too. Plants can also be a lovely gift for a family member or friend to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary. Giving a living plant to someone is a gift that keeps on giving, as it grows and flourishes it will provide them with a constant reminder of you and can also encourage the recipient to care and nurture for it. And who knows, they may also begin a journey into gardening. Whether it’s gardening with others, swapping spare plants, passing on gardening advice and knowledge, or giving beautiful plants as gifts to friends; by sharing our love of gardening we can all grow together.

SHARING IS CARING The Creating Co-operative Community (CCC) are holding their final share of 2019 on Saturday 14th September, 10.30-11.30am at the Haxby and Wigginton Methodist Church Hall. New and old members alike are more than welcome to come along – why not bring the family and encourage little ones to get involved in growing things? All plants and seeds are free – it’s all about sharing excesses, passing things on and spreading the plant-based love! n For more information give Tim a call on 01904 760659 or email him at hwtransition@gmail.com.

Late Summer Discovery One of the consolations of the fading of summer is the ripening of the first apples and pears. I’ve a number of early maturing apples. First to crop, but often a disappointment because the apples can fall from the tree before fully ripening, is Beauty of Bath. Next up is the better-behaved George Cave, a variety I find quite tasty although others consider it unappetising. Following close behind in the ripening race is Discovery. This is a more widely-known apple, one that can still be bought from farm shops and, less frequently now than in the past, supermarkets.

READ ALL ABOUT IT Discovery isn’t a ‘heritage’ variety. It originates in East Anglia but was released into cultivation as recently as 1962. Like many early apples, it’s more eye catching than taste bud tingling. For me, the flavour is, at best, ‘middling’. Apple expert Roseanne Sanders seems to agree. In her classic book The English Apple, she damns it with faint praise saying the “flavour is quite good”. Others are a tad more enthusiastic. Fellow expert Joan Morgan in The Book of Apples calls it “crisp” and “juicy” adding that it has a “hint of strawberry flavour”. In the interest of balance I should say lots of people I know do like

it, particularly those who prefer their apples crisp and juicy rather than tangy. Despite my reservations on its flavour, I do grow Discovery. This is partly because of its earliness but also because it has several virtues from a cultivation point of view. Unlike some other apples, it crops reliably every year. It’s also resistant to diseases such as scab and canker and is of modest vigour meaning it doesn’t require too much pruning. And the fruit is stunning. When fully ripe, much of the skin is coloured an enticing bright red. When bitten into, the flesh is tinged pink throughout – a characteristic that intrigues and appeals to children.

TAKE THE GOOD WITH THE BAD Its cultivation downsides are relatively minor. Like some other early season apples it’s a partial tip bearer (that is, it tends to fruit at the end of branches rather than on spurs like most apples). This makes pruning a little more complex. Being highly coloured it’s attractive to birds. Most years a few of mine are pecked. Squirrels, too, sometimes take a nibble – while wasps may move in if the fruit hangs too long on the tree. Another snag is that it can’t be left to linger in the fruit bowl.

EXPERT

Tony Chalcraft Although it keeps better than some other early apples, Discovery is best eaten soon after picking. Try storing it for more than a few weeks and it will be rubbery rather than crisp. There are other early apples whose flavour I prefer to Discovery. St Edmund’s Pippin probably tops the list. I’ll say more about this, and a few other early ripening types, another time. For now though, don’t let my qualms about Discovery’s taste put you off. Its reliable cropping, trouble-free growing and, most of all, attractive appearance, make it a top choice for anyone growing a few apple trees.

MONEY TREE You probably read a little while ago that our lovely Tony took part in the National Open Garden Scheme on the 14th and 17th July, opening his Nursery to the public for charity. Over these dates, Tony welcomed 176 visitors and raised over £750 for both the National Garden Scheme and Oxfam. Well done, Tony!

G O T A GA R D E N I N G QUESTION?

Ask CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES

If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk or call Chris on 766266. Hi Chris! I’m struggling with unwanted ivy that’s strangling my hedges – how do I get rid of it? I try to cut it back each year and use Roundup, but it doesn’t seem to do much. Roundup is great, but if you’re applying it to something connected to a hedge then you have to make sure you paint it onto the ivy leaves, and the stub of the root, rather than spray it. Spraying the leaves risks the Roundup touching the hedge, which will in turn kill the hedge. Make sure you apply the Roundup in a neat solution. As ivy grows up from the ground, the key thing here is

to remove it from the ground. Cut the stem of the ivy at ground level and always ensure you pull it out directly from the root. If you cut it back then it’ll just continue to grow. Could you recommend some grasses and perennials that would mix in a medium to large border please? Long neglected perennial grasses are now being rediscovered and increasingly cultivated for their ornamental value. Ideal for small to large borders, those suggested below will make a striking addition to any garden. Pennisetum Hameln is a clump-forming perennial grass with arching linear leaves and cylindrical panicles of bristly, purpletinged spikelets that flower in late summer. Remove dead foliage and old flowered stems in spring. Miscanthus ‘Kleine Silberspinne’ forms a compact clump of beautiful arching narrow leaves with white midribs, and feathery reddish flower heads growing to 1.2m tall in late summer, soon turning pale brown and lasting well in to winter.

Anemanthele ‘Sirocco’ New Zealand wind grass are semi-evergreen grasses forming a clump of slender leaves of attractive arching habit, with large feathery sprays of tiny reddishbrown flowers. Stipa ‘Gigantea’ is a robust tufted evergreen grass growing to 2m with arching folded or rolled linear leaves, and large panicles of oat-like long, purplish flowers, which ripen to gold. Hakonechloa ‘Aureola’ is a neat, clumpforming deciduous grass growing to 30cm, with narrow arching, greenstriped, bright yellow leaves; often reddish-brown in autumn and early winter. Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ is a perennial forming a clump of narrow erect mid-green pleated leaves, with sprays of vivid red flowers on stems 1.2m

in height. Eryngium ‘Big blue’ is a wonderful upright herbaceous perennial to form 75cm with spiky, highly-divided, silvery-green foliage. The stiff branched stems are topped with thimble-shaped flowerheads surrounded by prickly blue bracts. Monarda ‘Beauty of Cobham’ flowers during late summer and early autumn. This lovely plant bears crowded heads of pink flowers with purple bracts that turn a warm brown in winter. Cut back in early spring. Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’, often known as ‘autumn joy’, will lure in butterflies and bees with its deep pink autumn flowers, maturing copper red. Phlomis ‘Fruticosa’ is a low, mound-forming evergreen shrub worth growing for its downy, aromatic grey-green leaves alone. Hope these help!

YOUR FAMILY

DEAD ROSES I spent last weekend in Lancaster. I had no reason to be there, other than having never been, and having a few days off. What follows is a full and frank review of Lancaster. If you’re from Lancaster and feel like complaining, hold your horses, son. Twin First, I’ve always referred to Lancaster as York’s evil twin. Historically it has much in common with our home city, experiencing similar groups of people living there at similar times. It wasn’t until the middle ages when the rivalry truly kicked off, thanks in no small part to the War of the Roses. The royal houses of York and Lancaster duked it out for the crown, Game of Thrones-style, with Lancaster’s Tudor dynasty prevailing. They might have won the war but get this: Lancaster is a bit of a dump. The city between Again, if ye be of Lancastrian descent, hold ye tongue a moment. Although I shall stick to my use of the phrase ‘bit of a dump’, I do so with the greatest of respect. Because York is also a bit of a dump these days, too; but in very different ways. On one side of Lancaster sits the ancient castle, which was until 2011 a working prison. On the other side a hill stretches

upwards, adorned with the enormous (and climbable) Ashton Memorial, offering sweeping vista all the way to Blackpool Tower. Lancaster city centre, however, is a compact cluster of shops, markets, concrete malls, and derelict mills. I wandered around expecting to find attractions, historical interpretation on every lump of old brickwork, and a towering cathedral worthy of the so-called capital of Lancashire. I didn’t find any of that. Sure, the castle was interesting when I took the tour (90 minutes of gruesome execution details) and there were a couple of art galleries to be found on the older streets, but that was it. Goggles Then I realised I was still wearing my York Goggles. York Goggles are what makes a guy originally from Doncaster, of all places, completely judgemental when he visits other cities. I slammed Birmingham a few years back in these pages and have attacked the aforementioned Donny several dozen times. Why? Because York breeds snobs. It’s easy to see why. York is undeniably a beautiful and interesting city. It’s England’s Norway, constantly being voted the best place to live and work. We are historically

COLUMNIST

important, which makes us famous both in history textbooks and on TV. There aren’t many violent historical dramas about Romans or Vikings that don’t mention York. And that’s the problem. The illusion A few days before arriving in Lancaster I was in London. Now, in a fight between the three, London would win. London would win in a fight against any other city, even one of the really over populated ones in China. It’s a leviathan, both in terms of historical significance and modern-day importance. But it’s mostly not a real place. Walk along The Mall to Buckingham Palace and you aren’t in England. Cross Westminster bridge in the shadow of Big Ben and you aren’t in England. Sit in Trafalgar Square and let a pigeon try to eat your sarnie and you aren’t in England. These places are all England-referencing illusions that exist purely to adorn the backdrops of Instagram posts. Get out of the centre of London and take a walk through Brentford, where my hotel was, and then you’re in England. Because it’s a bit of dump. But it’s real.

Howard Mosley

Reality That’s the difference between York and Lancaster. York is Tower Bridge with views over to the Shard, designed with aesthetic intent. Lancaster is the Sainsbury’s local I popped into on South Ealing Road because I needed a bottle of water. It’s a real place where real things happen. I realise this may seem like I’m being down on York, calling it an unreal place, but that is increasingly how it feels. I’ve called this place my home for almost 20 years now, but even in that short time have seen a huge transformation from a picturesque and interesting city, to a pre-packaged tourist offer. Lancaster seems to have mostly avoided that, for now at least. It still feels like a city in England where people live, work, and do stuff. Whereas York (or, to give it its brand name, The City of York) can be purchased, be it on a keychain or emblazoned on the chest of a generic hoody. If we’re not careful, Disney will soon notice our profit potential and snap us up, installing Mickey Mouse as Mayor and Yoda as our MP. So, to see York from yesteryear, before the city’s character was eroded by its own success, visit Lancaster.

Fab at Forty MySight York, previously known as York Blind & Partially Sighted Society, have celebrated their 40th anniversary by moving into brand new premises in the city centre. Visitors of MySight’s new home will discover technology solutions and a huge range of equipment, and MySight staff are on hand to offer their expert guidance. Not only that, but there are activities and groups for visitors to join in with – as well as the option of a trained home visiting volunteer offering companionship and support. Karen Froggatt, MySight York’s Chief Executive, says: “Many people will be aware of the plans for the redevelopment of Rougier Street, our home for the past five years. We have taken this opportunity to find somewhere that is central and more accessible to people with sight loss, as

well as being close to local transport links. “Our new premises are bright and airy and offer lots of scope to develop our services for visually impaired people and their family and friends. “This is a wonderful way for us to mark our 40th year, supporting anyone affected by sight loss to ‘live well’.” n MySight York are now open at 14 Merchants Place, Merchantgate, YO1 9TU.

CENTRE OF ATTRACTION It’s fair to say that within Yorkshire, we’re pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do. No matter where you go within the petals of the white rose, you’ll find a pretty damn good attraction. In fact, there are so many activity hotspots in the region that YorkshireAttractions.org are currently looking for Yorkshire’s Favourite Attraction 2019 – and it’s up to you to

decide the winner. Voting happens online, where you’re required to select your favourite indoor and outdoor attraction from the shortlist. And there’s something in it for you, too – every vote cast enters a prize draw to win a two-night B&B stay at Hampton by Hilton for two adults and two children, family tickets to selected attractions, and a £100 Trinity Leeds Shopping Centre gift

Learn Your Lesson Fancy learning something new? Whatever your circumstances, wherever you are, the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) are here to help adults learn through professional courses in all kinds of subjects. The WEA have existed since 1903, and their course fees are subsidised by the government – meaning you can add a new string to your bow for a much cheaper cost than you might think. In fact, if you’re on means-tested benefits you could even receive tuition for free! WEA courses are coming to Haxby and Wigginton, and include subjects such as Drawing and Painting; Everyday Greek;

Mindfulness; Sugarcraft Techniques; and Age of Realism: History, Art and Culture 1830-1914 to name a few. Each course is run by professional tutors that take time and effort to build trust and empathy with every student, to ensure that learning with WEA benefits their lives as much as possible. Haxby and Wigginton courses start at the end of September and run from 6-11 weeks depending on the subject. n If you’re ready to learn and want to find out more about how you can get involved with the WEA, then visit www. wea.org.uk or call 0300 303 3464 to enrol.

card. Not bad for the click of a mouse. What’s causing us to beam with pride even more is that a huge amount of the attractions in the running are from our very own city. These include activity centres such as York’s Chocolate Story, JORVIK Viking Centre, William’s Den, and more. n To vote, and to be in with a chance of winning the amazing prize, visit www. yorkshireattractions.org – but voting closes on 11th September at midnight, so don’t wait!

Celebrating Life Stamford Bridge Beaumont is more than a care home. It’s a family home. A friendly home. Your home. A home that provides tailored care, beautiful environments and choice in every meal or activity. A place that celebrates the little things that mean everything – morning, noon and night. US A Barking up the right tree! GIVE HAVE A HOME? THESE CUTIE PIES NEED ONE. Local dog boarding company Wagging Tails recently completed its first successful year of trading offering dog owners throughout the YO postcode area a home-based alternative to kennels. Jane Bamford, who runs Wagging Tails York and has a Cockerpoo called Stanley, has already put together a team of high quality dog carers who welcome dogs into their own homes for a doggy holiday while their owners are away. The service has received huge demand with a number of owners in the area using Wagging Tails for their dog's holiday. Lindsey, a dog owner from North Yorkshire who used the service said: “We moved to Yorkshire last year and knew we'd be hard-pressed to find a carer for our dog, Robert, who could begin to match his carer in Hampshire, with whom he'd been for four years. Luckily, and to our great relief, we found Jane and her family. Not only is Robert cared for well and responsibly, but he's treated like a member of the family; loved, played with, cuddled and made to feel safe and secure.”

KEZ This lovely boy was brought into the centre as his needs weren’t being met – and his past is a bit of a mystery. What’s clear though, sadly, is that whatever happened in his past has left him timid and anxious. He’s a really lovely dog, and needs a new home with a family that will be patient, caring and understanding of his insecurities – and help him to work through them.

BENSON

Jane attributes the success of the business to the focus she places on the welfare and individual needs of each dog. “Owners are often, and quite rightly, very worried about leaving their dogs when they go away and many don't like the idea of kennels. Our aim is to make this as stress free as possible by finding out as much information as we can about each dog. Owners get to go and meet their dog's carer prior to the board and go away knowing that they will be the only guest in the house.” • If you would like to find out more or are interested in joining their team of dog carers please call Jane on 01904 738 366 or visit www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/yo.

Poor Benson’s a bit a nomad, and has found himself living in a few different homes throughout his life. He’s a bit of an old boy at nine years old, so let’s get him his forever home. He’s quite insecure when he’s left on his own, so he’ll need someone who can be at home with him most of the time. At the same time he’s rather lively – and will need a family that can keep him active.

We hear from Laurie Prime of York Yoga Studio

Yoga – for the time of your life! I sometimes hear people coming out of classes, smiling and happy, commenting that they’re having the time of their lives – wishing that they’d started their yoga practice earlier in life so they could have experienced the benefits sooner. And it’s true: yoga is great for children and young adults. It instils a sense of mindfulness and focus that is so helpful as life changes and challenges. It promotes a healthy self-image and positive body awareness, and is both accessible and affordable. And it’s fun – a wonderful alternative to competitive sport, providing a brilliant way to develop strength, flexibility, balance and stamina. And while it’s excellent for children, starting yoga young is certainly not a requirement. In many ways, it’s almost like a person comes to yoga when it’s the right time for them – they’re moved

We also recognise that while truth is one, paths are many, and so we offer a range of mindful practices and

to take a class because somehow they know it will give them something they need. When we are mature and have nurtured families, built careers and learned about the world, it can be the perfect time to turn our awareness inward – to learn now about ourselves and our capacities. Yoga can do this. Our practice can teach us that we are stronger than we think and more connected than we know. In our middle years it’s important to continue using our bodies to retain mobility and strength. But yoga is more than a physical practice – it offers a philosophy and path towards a more meditative life. It’s often in these middle years that we recognise how precious our lives are and we appreciate a more mindful approach to living, which is part of a yoga practice. But the best part about yoga is that it truly is a practice for a lifetime. For older students it offers a path to a more active life, a safe and welcoming environment, and a practice that lets you work at your own level. So there is no ‘ideal’ time to start yoga – it is always the right

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME

EXPERT

Resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, shares her expert knowledge on non-invasive alternatives to liposuction. 3D LIPO Do you want to permanently get rid of stubborn pockets of fat? Do you want to lose inches or tighten skin? If so, consider 3D Lipomed, a revolutionary fat-reduction treatment available at Skin Doctor York. 3D Lipomed is a procedure that helps to get rid of fat in the body. It’s a powerful and revolutionary new approach to liposuction which doesn’t involve surgery. 3D Lipomed reduces body fat by destroying fat cells, instead of merely breaking them up, and then releases them into the body where they naturally leave through the digestive system. CRYOLIPOLYSIS Cryolipolysis or Cryo is a revolutionary treatment that is designed to freeze and destroy stubborn pockets of fat such as tummy pouches, muffin tops and bingo wings, leaving the targeted area looking flat and toned.

The treatment works by freezing localised pockets of fat to -5C. It’s the perfect temperature to kill fat, which freezes at -1C. The treatment is very effective, and targets 20-40% of fat cells per session in the area. It’s gentler in comparison to traditional liposuction, which targets 80% of fat cells. After the procedure the area that has been treated will be slightly red and swollen, and cool to the touch. This is temporary and the area will return back to normal in less than two hours. It will take six months for your body to fully metabolise and expel the targeted fat cells, however superficial results can be seen as little as a few weeks after the procedure. FAQS WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 3D LIPOSUCTION AND STANDARD LIPOSUCTION? Unlike traditional liposuction, the 3D procedure is entirely non-invasive.

We use various strategies including ultrasound, radio frequency, and cryolipolysis, to reduce fat without ever going beneath the skin. Furthermore, where standard liposuction requires a lot of vigorous exercise to metabolise the fat cells after the procedure, the 3D treatment gives outstanding results without any exercise at all. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? Side effects are rare however they include possible risk of bruising in the treated area and slight numbness in the area for up to 10 days.

Dr Saleena Zimri WHAT ABOUT AFTERCARE? Downtime before and after treatment is minimal. Simply avoid consuming alcohol, caffeine and large meals 24 hours prior and post treatment. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST AND HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE? Prices start from £210 per session and a session can last between 40 minutes and an hour. With products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. You’ll be in for a lively and entertaining evening, which will include the appearance of a special guest interviewer – and plenty of laughter!

THE GONDOLIERS (22nd-26th October) York Opera are bringing Gilbert & Sullivan’s last great triumph to the Theatre Royal. A missing king, a selfserving duke and brilliantly colourful characters that roam the canals of Venice.

Football might not be coming home – but Frank is!* Don’t miss this opportunity to see the funnyman live in the flesh! *We don’t actually know if York is Frank’s home. But we wanted the opportunity to make the reference!

ENGLISH YOUTH BALLET: SWAN LAKE (27th-28th September) This traditional story takes the form of a powerful new adaptation, as the seductive and evil Black Swan competes with the beautiful and vulnerable White Swan for the Prince’s affections. You won’t want to miss this absolutely stunning performance of breathtaking choreography and phenomenal dancers.
