YLM has listened! A few weeks ago we asked readers and local businesses to tell us what they thought of YLM, and how we could make it even better. We were thrilled that so many people responded and shared their thoughts. And now it’s time to action those ideas. What was very clear was that everyone loves their local mag! Locals love the high quality glossy feel, the stunning cover photography, the longer reads and local content, the delicious recipes and, of course, Dave’s mind-boggling crossword! In fact, you said you wanted MORE of everything! Our advertisers are ge ing fantastic results and love the look and feel of YLM. They also appreciate that YLM goes straight into homes via le erboxes, rather than wrapped in plastic in the gu er. All feedback about Noosa’s locally owned and produced magazine has been positive but – times are tough. There’s no doubt Noosa’s economy is growing and improving but it’s hard to make a dollar some days, especially for small local businesses ba ling big corporations.

And sometimes it’s hard to find that weekly advertising budget. Well, you have spoken and we have listened. YLM is going monthly, with a bigger, be er, bumper magazine! Packed with even more feature stories and interviews, community information, lifestyle, entertainment, puzzles and more. Our first monthly issue will be out at the beginning of September. This week we welcome back our local Nippers and find out what is giving Noosa Junction its new ‘wow’ factor. Plus Rhonda Crockford shares her inspiring story about beating cancer.

Helping hand for Coast koalas

Paul accepts a donation from the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads Daybreak

Bookfest boosts disabled sailing program

WILDLIFE EXPERTS ARE BEING CALLED UPON TO HELP RELOCATE REHABILITATED KOALAS TO THE NOOSA HINTERLAND IN A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH THE QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT. Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, welcomed the initiative to give sterile but otherwise healthy female koalas a chance to happily live out their days in an underpopulated koala habitat. “The alternative to this plan for their relocation is for these iconic animals to be euthanized and I welcome the vision of the Environment Minister in looking beyond the normal practice for a better solution,” Mr Elmes said. Mr Elmes said the Queensland Government had committed more than $26.5 million to protect koalas, including the recent purchase of 57 hectares of prime koala habitat at Lake Macdonald. “Our commitment to buying and rehabilitating habitat will help ensure our koala populations – particularly on the Sunshine Coast – continue to survive and grow,” he said.

NOOSA YACHT & ROWING CLUB’S ACCESS (DISABLED) SAILING PROGRAM HAS RECEIVED A CASH BOOST, THANKS TO ROTARY. The program was chosen by the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads Daybreak to receive funds from this year’s Bookfest Noosa, after NYRC Sailing Manager Paul Blundell spoke to the club earlier this year. Daybreak President, Ian McDonald handed over a cheque for $6000, plus a further $250 from Daybreak-supported Ausfit Pty Ltd. The NYRC Access (Disabled) sailing program has been operating for many years, originally starting with a small group of kids and adults from House With No Steps, attending every week to enjoy a sail

with an NYRC Volunteer. Now around 50 kids and adults sail with their carers and the helpful Youthsail instructors each week. “We have sailors that travel from as far away as Gympie and Maleny. Another 30 kids from Noosaville State School Special Education Unit attend each Wednesday,” said Paul. “This type of program could not be offered at a cost that users could bear without the support of the NYRC and program sponsors like Rotary Club of Noosa Daybreak. We are very lucky to have the support of such a strong committee-based organisation such as Daybreak and we thank Ian McDonald, John Sheriff and the members for supporting this most worthwhile of programs.”

THE FUTURE OF SURF LIFESAVING ISOBEL COLEMAN

It was a good day indeed for surf lifesaving in Australia when a bright spark suggested launching a new recruitment campaign for youngsters – to be known as Nippers. It was the mid-1960s. The buzz that had been surf lifesaving up to that point had diminished. Membership numbers were declining; club life was deteriorating. But surf lifesaving clubs believed that if they could recruit more youngsters, those Nippers would grow into active members and, with more sporting experience, improve their competitive profiles. The idea wasn’t really new – Co esloe club recruited sub-juniors (juveniles) in the 1930s and several other clubs followed suit in the 1950s. But the Nipper program in the 1960s was far more extensive and actively encouraged by senior surf lifesaving officials. Fast-forward to 2014 and junior activities are growing at such a rate that some clubs have even had to cap their numbers to be able to cope. One local surf lifesaving club ticking all the boxes is Sunshine.

Having started life as a tin shed, Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club recently celebrated its 30th patrolling anniversary. Formed when Marjorie Tripp persuaded 25 local surfers to start a club, it now boasts a large number of active members performing preventative actions and rescues each season and enjoying wonderful clubhouse facilities. With the growth of the community and the club, the need for a junior activities program was evident, and Sunshine’s first Nippers hit the beach in the 1983/84 season with 45 members. THE SCENE

“Wow" factor at Junction NEW SHOPS, NEW DIRECTION, NEW HOPE JIM FAGAN It’s still autumn but already there’s a new spring in the step of the folk who make their living at Noosa Junction. New businesses are filling shops that have been empty shells for months, coffee and wine bars are staying open at night, restaurants have an international favour and there’s even a move for a regular Farmers’ Market in Arcadia Street. And it’s all being driven by an enthusiastic and newly-named Noosa Junction Association (it’s dropped the word “Traders”). Not only does it have a name change but it has a new commi ee, a new Constitution and a new strategic plan. It’s even got a new ABN. The recent Junction doldrums with 27 ‘For Lease’ signs posted on shop windows are gone. Now it’s down to 16 and five new contracts are expected to be signed shortly, reducing the total to 11. For the 250 or so businesses there, it’s all good news.

Sue Pollard One long-term business owner is beauty therapist, Sue Pollard, who has operated Beauty Rooms on Sunshine Beach Road for 17 years. She is vice-president of the new Association and was clearly excited when we met to talk about the spike in Junction life.

“A shop upstairs at Mitre 10 has been leased. There are two more to go and people are looking at them. Something exciting is going on where the Chinese restaurant used to be – some sort of beer-brewery boutique. Empty shops are being filled.” She pointed across the street. “There’s a bakery going in there. “We’ve got a Japanese, an Italian and Thai restaurants and there’s a Korean restaurant going in, all very international. Canteen is open at night time now and coffee and wine bars like the new Village Bicycle bar and café just round the corner are also open at night.” Sue has been an Association commi ee member since 1997 and believes more businesses are being a racted because they can actually see that locals and tourists are starting to notice how Noosa Junction is ge ing the “Wow” factor. “We have a new president, Carol Braithwaite, and our commi ee is working with the Council. We’ve met with Mayor Playford and CEO Bre de Chastel, who are very supportive. The Council is talking with Coles and its plans for the Noosa Heads Bowls Club site which is great. We want Coles there.” She said a move to use social media to

Mayor supports new initiatives

promote the precinct was working. “We’ve reactivated Facebook and we’re communicating with the community. We’re negotiating to have a Farmers’ Market one Friday a month in Arcadia Street, flowing on to Lanyana Way. We’re looking for 50 stallholders, all specialising in food and arts.” I asked her if Noosa Civic was still impacting on Junction trading. “Not any more. We’re over it. We didn’t want it at first but it woke us up. We had to start doing some-

thing to keep our business and clients.” She dismissed talk of parking being a problem. “Maybe we need to get more signs but there is plenty of parking in Noosa Junction. We have car parking only one minute’s walk away. “I love this place. I have my business here and I think it is a beautiful spot. We have a wonderful committee of people of various professional services. I’m very excited about what’s happening.”

Noosa Mayor Noel Playford is delighted there is a resurgence of enthusiasm in the Noosa Junction business community and wholeheartedly supports the idea of attractions like a Farmers Market being introduced. “This is an opportunity. Locals as well as tourists are looking for alternatives and that sort of thing appeals to me a lot more than wandering through a sterile, undercover, air conditioned shopping centre. “Traders are obviously searching for initiatives to make the Junction more attractive. When Brett (Brett de Chastel Council CEO) and I met the Association people I said what would be attractive to me would be to get together occasionally with friends after work, sit in a nice spot, listen to music, have a drink, some food, the sort of

thing that goes in the square at Peregian Beach. “Another thing I said is that businesses change and, if people haven’t been to Noosa Junction for a while, then they won’t know any more than they did in the past. They won’t realise what’s available. “I said they should work towards a weekend or a day once or twice a year to give it a bit of a carnival atmosphere and get all the businesses involved. People will wander around and start to realise what businesses actually are there.” Mr Playford said he also told the Association people it was terrific they were prepared to do something to help themselves. “When you have people willing to do that then we say whatever we can do to help just ask. Call us any time. We’re happy to help you achieve your goals.”

Behind

THE SCENES

Rhonda's cancer fight gets her over the line When Rhonda Crockford and Wendy Mabbott decided to buy and race an OC2 (two-person outrigger canoe), Rhonda’s favourite saying was “Wendy’s sensitive and I talk too much, what could possibly go wrong?” What they didn’t foresee was that Rhonda would be diagnosed with breast cancer. The shocking news came just after their first race of the 2013 season and Rhonda’s subsequent treatment looked to end their racing not just that season, but forever. But Rhonda had other ideas. Such was her determination and legendary positive a itude that she immediately drew up a timeframe not only for her recovery, but also for her return to outrigging. While racing was out of the question for the 2013 season Rhonda was adamant that, once

her surgery and radiation therapy were completed, she would be back on the water. Rhonda worked herself back to health and fitness by continuing her yoga, fitness training and paddling during 2014, her true grit and composure shining through. She was inspirational in the support boat for the Gold Coast Cup changeover race (10 ladies taking turns in paddling a six-man canoe) in April this year, supervising the changeovers to perfection. And then a couple of weekends ago, when the first race of the 2014 OC1/OC2 season got under way, she and Wendy were back together, to compete. Organised by the Bundaberg Club, the race saw canoes starting in the Burne River and then going out to sea and back. A tough call. But there were no half measures for Rhonda. Out of a field of 75 craft, which included surfskis, OC1s (one-man canoes) and OC2s, the girls were 40th over the line. And even be er

Thanks to my fat burning Papilio sessions, I’m 10kg lighter, healthier & so much fitter than before. I’m in love with my body again! As a business owner, I found this program perfect for me as I am so time conscious. It’s the best 30mins you can put aside. Doing the Papilio system has bought wonderful changes for me both on the inside and outside. It’s been over 12 months now since I did my program and the weight has never come back and people still comment on how great I look! Don’t procrastinate!

Wendy and Rhonda after their successful first race of the season than that, they came first in their category of Golden Master Women (60-70 years), beating some teams in younger categories. This in itself is noteworthy, but taking into account Rhonda’s recent health issues this is remarkable. And she’s quick to share the glory, saying her fight, although personal, was assisted and encouraged by her friends and team-mates.
