WEEKLY GARDENING Getting Your Garden Ready for
by Mick Forrell: Wagga Nursery Pull out those tools that have been sitting around all winter so you want to make sure they are ready for the job. Clean off the tools with soap and water. Use a timber preservative on wood handles to help prevent the wood from splintering. Sharpen cutters and secateurs to ensure clean cuts and sterilize blades with methylated spirits between plants to minimise the chance of spreading disease. Throughout Autumn and winter your garden is exposed to the elements including cold weather winds and frost, leaving an abundance of leaves and debris. You want to first start by clearing all of your garden beds and lawn of broken branches, leaves and other debris that have collected. It’s important to start these chores quickly, as your spring bulbs and plants should be popping out of the ground by the end of the month. The sooner you clean out the beds, the less chance you have of stepping on the growing plants and damaging them. The same cleanup method applies for your trees and shrubs. To prepare for spring, trim off any broken or dead branches, prune and shape to maintain healthy bushy growth.
GIVE YOUR SOIL SOME TLC Make sure your soil is ready for planting. To start, turn the soil over with a pitchfork and rake it out, clearing any weeds that may have grown. Add fresh compost from your compost bin or if you don’t have one, use store-bought compost or manure to add nutrients to the soil. Be sure to add compost or manure a couple of weeks before planting something, so it has time to mix well with your soil and won’t burn the roots of your new plants.
We recommend Martins products such as planting compost and cow manure.
MAKE A PLAN Consult your zone to see which flowers and vegetables are best for your location. You can also head to your local nursery to get planting recommendations from local experts. Planning your garden is the most important part. I like to plant so that you get colour blooming throughout the season—so mix perennial flowers with some annuals as this will help keep colour in your yard longer. It’s also good to plant according to height, making sure that taller plants are placed to the back.
DON’T FORGET TO MAINTAIN IT Upkeep during the whole season is the key. Once your flowers start blooming you will have to deadhead to promote more flowers (depending on the species), and it’s a good time to plant annuals to supplement your perennial flowers. Deadheading is when you cut off the drooping or fading flowers from the rest of the green, healthy stem. Late spring is also a good time to put down a nice layer of mulch on the garden. This will help hold down weeds while keeping in water for those long hot summer days ahead. It also will break down over the fall and winter and help add nutrients to the soil.

By Katrina Chambers NOT RESEARCHING YOUR FURNITURE CHOICES When making decisions to purchase expensive items in my house, I take a long time to make up my mind. The big-ticket items can include a couch, dining table or comfy chairs. Before I purchase, I like to research everything I can by measuring sizes, step out dimensions, visit every store, price everything and sit with my thoughts for a while. It will pay off in the long run if you take your time. Rushing will only leave you with wasted money and ill-fitting furniture.
MATCH THE SCALE I know, it’s soooo hard to find big floor rugs. If you have a huge space and a huge couch you need a huge rug to keep everything in proportion. Or, if you really can’t find a big rug, have a piece of carpet edged, or just have no rug until you can find the right one. Don’t settle for anything except what is perfect. A small rug will distort the proportions of the room.

COME INTO THE OPEN AND CREATE INTIMATE BE GENEROUS WITH YOUR ART Bigger is always better; think scale and bold when selecting works of art because you won’t regret it, and you won’t have to buy twice. If you’re creative, paint your own pieces and remember to buy huge canvases and make a statement. If you are placing art over your couch, bedhead or hall-table, your art should be 2/3 the width of the furniture you place it above. This makes the art an interesting focal point of the room.
OVER-ACCESSORISING With so many affordable items available from chain stores, it is easy to create a clutter of stuff instead of a co-ordinated collection of intent. My favourite homes on Instagram are those in which there is minimal but subtle and finely tuned detail in the rooms. Less is more, and simplicity is elegance are the mantras in this space.
Pull the couch in, create conversation spaces and don’t leave awkward spaces wide open. Trust me, no one will care if they see the back of your couch.
