The London Marathon The iconic global event returns for its 36th installment aiming to raise more money than ever for charities across the world.
More than just a race, the London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising event in the world, with 35,000 runners creating an amazing atmosphere. Currently sponsored by Virgin Money and referred to as the Virgin Money London Marathon, the race is held every spring in London. This year sees the 36th Marathon take place on 24 April 2016. Founded by former Olympic champion and journalist Chris Brasher and Welsh athlete John Disley, the race, a distance of 42.195km (26 miles and 385 yards), is set over a largely flat course around the River Thames, beginning at three separate points around Blackheath and finishing in The Mall alongside St. James’s Park. Since the first marathon back in 1981, the course has undergone very few route changes. In 1982, the finishing post was moved from Constitution Hill to Westminster Bridge due to construction works and remained there for twelve years before moving to its present location at The Mall. The event is one of the five top world marathons that make up the World Marathon Majors competition and has raised over £770 million for charity since 1981. Other World Marathon Majors include Berlin, Boston, Chicago and New York City. While it is a serious athletic event, with a large sum of prize money attracting elite athletes, public perception of the race is mainly dominated by club and fun runners. A wide range of weird and wonderful fancy dress outfits can be seen in the name of charity and more than 75 per cent of the 37,000+ runners on Sunday 24 April will be raising money for charity. Also contributing to the charity raising are a number of wellknown faces who take to the streets to help a wide variety of well-deserving charities such as Cancer Research, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, British Heart Foundation, Kidney Research UK and many, many more.
This year is set to be no different with a host of names from both the sporting and entertainment world taking part. Former England international footballer Danny Mills will pay a special tribute to World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore when he takes on this year’s marathon. To mark the 50th year since Moore lifted the Jules Rimet trophy, the ex-Charlton and Leeds right back will don a replica of the famous red shirt worn by the ‘Boys of ‘66’ that day and also pin on runner number 1966 to honour the occasion. Mills will be running in aid of the Bobby Moore Fund, a charity partner of Cancer Research. The Fund was set up by Moore’s wife Stephanie following his death, aged 51, in 1993 from bowel cancer. To date the Fund has raised over £22 million. Joining Mills on the Start Line will be Olympic Champion Dame Kelly Holmes, who is hoping to raise £250,000 for charitable causes including The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, Myeloma UK, MIND and two local charities in her home county of Kent, The Pickering Cancer Centre and Hospice in the Weald. British actress Natalie Dormer, star of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones and blockbuster film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. Dormer is running for Charity of the Year NSPCC, which is celebrating 30 years of the iconic children’s service, ChildLine, and hoping to beat her London Marathon debut time of 3:50:57 from 2014. Radio 2 presenter and new Top Gear host Chris Evans will also run for the second time, after clocking 4:53:15 last year. He is running with his wife Natasha as part of a team raising money for BBC’s Children in Need. An interactive map, giving details of the best locations to watch the marathon, is available on the Virgin Money London Marathon website, along with other important spectator and runner information.

Basel’s Best Ken Kessler
Following last month’s preview of some of the new treasures
display that features one subdial for seconds and one for the day of the week. Another brand undergoing a revival – though it’s been present in France and Italy since it re-emerged at the end of the last century – is Leroy. Watch enthusiasts know this as a name to rank with Breguet and Graham; the modern incarnation includes the fabulous Marine Chronographe Automatique, with timeless features such as Roman numerals and blued steel hands, but with the modern touch of a “big date” aperture, too.
at Baselworld, and even with so much advance publicity, the watchmakers hold back real surprises. In addition to uncovering the last-minute surprises, the show affords an opportunity to detect any themes that are emerging. Retro diving watches were everywhere, as were blue dials, whether lacquered or anodised or painted, a drive toward smaller case sizes, a lowering of prices in a lot of categories, the increase in acceptance of bling-y models for men – suffice it to say, the 150 exhibitors offered something for all tastes and budgets. Clear to all was the re-emergence of dormant brands, the fighting back of stalled makers and far less in-your-face surrender to smart watches. Sure, you could push buttons and mess with Bluetooth if so inspired, but one suspects that the public realises the smart watch dependency on a phone in your pocket and the need to be online is a path that only gadget freaks will follow. Like we need more battery-powered plastic crap? Instead, it was a celebration of traditional values. Czapek & Cie is the revival of an old brand, its founder once a protégé of Antoine Norbert de Patek. Classicism is the tone for this company, whose Quai des Bergues is a modern interpretation of a pocket watch found in the company archives. Its distinctive feature is a

KEN KESSLER This truly spectacular creation also features two tourbillons; here they are identical in structure, frequency and speed, but “have their own behaviour, due to their different positions in space.” The differential optimises the watch’s performance by connecting the two tourbillons and creating an average. Rival jewellery house Fabergé is on a roll with its complications, and the Visionnaire DTZ had assembled observers gushing with praise: it features an optical device that shows a second time zone in the centre of the watch with a jumping 24-hour digit under a glass dome in the centre of the dial. Offered in titanium and rose or white gold, it marries gorgeous looks redolent of the finest jewellery with a complication that is utterly practical. Oh, mama… what a gem. Manufacture Royale, though a new brand, also looks to the past, as its inspiration is the writer and watch manufacturer Voltaire. Its cause célèbre is superlative complications, but with almost-sane prices. The Micromegas is a double tourbillon – not that uncommon nowadays – but in this watch we have two that turn at different rates, to create an optical effect that will delight the wearer. Speaking of history and of tourbillons, Harry Winston unveiled the latest in its Histoire de Tourbillon, No. 7.

For those of a sporting mien, Breitling has a radical piece of tech in the Superocean Heritage Chronoworks. This boasts all manner of new developments, the name suggest the “skunkworks” that aviation companies use for blue-sky thinking. Though at first it looks like yet another massive, macho Breitling chronograph, it features a reworked Breitling Caliber 01 with columnwheel construction, a vertical coupling-clutch and an over 70-hour power reserve. To increase its efficiency, the movement employs a ceramic baseplate and gear-train bridges silicon wheels and silicon escapement. This will keep the chatter flowing for hours amidst a crowd of watch buddies at the bar. Not all the watches at Baselworld feature prices commensurate with automobiles. Raymond Weil beat all of
the brands to the single most important license in rock music – bigger than Michael Jackson, Elvis and Taylor Swift combined: the Beatles. The debut model from this marriage is a clever tribute that features the titles of all 13 of the band’s albums, with some clever iconography to squeeze them into the space allocated for 12. Automatic and affordable, only 3000 will be made. If you’re a fan of the Fab Four, move quickly. Another bargain – maybe the bargain of the show – came from Hamilton, which I admit to be a collector thereof. Turning to its past, the company has revived the ultra-cool Khaki Navy Frogman, in two sizes (42mm or 46mm), with a choice of rubber strap or bracelet. The larger model is offered with a black dial with red bezel, the smaller version with black dial and bezel or blue dial and bezel. A neat touch is the screw-down cover for the crown, but the kicker is the price. It’s so low that I’m not gonna write it down, because I still can’t believe it.

The Gold Standard
Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Yellow Gold Collection delivers five distinct models including openworked tourbillon, perpetual calendar and self-winding options. All of which are immediately distinguished by the striking 18-carat yellow gold case and bracelet with each offering the option of a silver-toned or blue dial - with the exception of the openworked tourbillon, for obvious reasons and perpetual calendar. The new Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar celebrates the timeless allure of yellow gold by combining it with the most classic and romantic complication. On the “Grande Tapisserie” decorated dials - a subtle pattern of three-dimensional squares - the traditional displays of a perpetual calendar timepiece are given pride of place: day, month and date are displayed at nine, noon and three o’clock. The essential leap year indication, an Audemars Piguet innovation first introduced to wristwatch design in 1955, takes centre stage at noon. An
astronomical moon finds it place at six o’clock, and the week of the year is displayed on the dial’s outer chapter ring, adding yet another layer of time measurement. Housed in the perpetual beauty of yellow gold, the self-winding watch’s new calibre 5134 is fully visible through the glareproof sapphire crystal caseback, but the warm, natural glow of precious gold has been brought fully to the fore. Calibre 5134 is based on its predecessor, calibre 2120, however it has been enlarged to perfectly fit the updated 41mm case size. Part of the inspiration for the new edition was the first Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar (reference 5554, later renamed 25554), designed by Jacqueline Dimier in 1984. Of the 279 pieces in that original launch, 229 were sumptuously cased in yellow gold. Another star of the yellow gold party is the impressive new Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin Openworked. The gravitydefying tourbillon, one of Haute Horlogerie’s most spectacular
WATCH NEWS complications, has received special attention from the master watchmakers at Audemars Piguet and the result speaks for itself. Finished with a slate grey dial, this timepiece offers the ultimate demonstration of the brands impressive craftsmanship. Unquestionably desirable, the combination of its openworked calibre with yellow gold features and imposing yellow gold case and bracelet ooze an air of opulence, reigniting a prestigious quality from historical horology. The collection also includes a three-counter chronograph powered by the Audemars Piguet calibre 2385 which energises the original Gerald Genta design from the early 70s. The 41 mm case houses a “Grande Tapisserie” dial in either silvery white or in the new paler blue, an angled date display at 4 o’clock, small seconds at 6 o’clock, yellow gold applied hour-markers and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating. And conceived along the refreshed lines of 2012’s 40th Anniversary model, the new Royal Oak Selfwinding has a 37 mm case in 18-carat yellow gold. However the crown for most aesthetically imposing from the collection is reserved for the new Royal Oak Quartz 33 mm edition. Accentuated by the glittering 40 brilliant-cut diamonds (0.73 carats) on the bezel, and the “Grande Tapisserie” pattern on the dial, you can’t help but appreciate the amalgamation of the two materials. Yellow gold and diamonds have always demonstrated wealth and prosperity, so why not wear them together. audemarspiguet.com
Limited Edition ‘The Watch Gallery’ from Hublot The luxury Swiss watch manufacturer’s latest partnership with The Watch Gallery marks the creation of two limited edition timepieces; the Classic Fusion & Classic Fusion Chronograph 45mm Special Edition ‘The Watch Gallery’. The Watch Gallery Special Edition watches feature satin-finished titanium cases and highly distinguishable H-shaped screws, meanwhile The Watch Gallery signature blue case back adds a subtle yet unique design feature. Inspired by Hublot’s material experimentation, titanium has become increasingly popular in contemporary watchmaking. Not only does it have a distinctive look, it is strong, tough, lightweight, anti-corrosive and hypoallergenic. Hublot has fused titanium with a polished satin-finished black ceramic bezel. The blue trend continues in the blue sun-ray satinfinished dial, and also in the two blue straps supplied with the watch - one rubber, and the other rubber-lined alligator. Once again, the overarching use of blue mirrors The Watch Gallery’s own navy handwriting - a subtle nod to Hublot’s choice partnership. The watch itself is powered by the HUB1143 automatic calibre and provides 42 hours of power reserve. Despite only slight differences in the two models, they change the look of the watch considerably. The Chronograph has polished rhodiumplated hands and a blue chronograph second hand giving it a sports-led look whereas the Classic Fusion is more a classic approach to serve as the perfect everyday watch. hublot.com | thewatchgallery.com

Man has always been fascinated by the Moon and the movement of the stars in correlation with the Earth. I believe that is the reason complications like Perpetual Calendars and Equation of Time remain so popular in an age where electronic calendars are integrated in every device we have whilst our phone most likely automatically changes to whichever timezone we enter. There’s something quite numinous about a clear starry night, realising just how small we are in the universal scheme of things yet it is a firm human trait to not settle for an existence but rather investigate their curiosity and push the boundaries. This same endeavour carries over to watches and specifically the movements within, hence the beauty of the exhibition sapphire caseback showcasing the miniature marvels that power these quite exquisite timepieces. Virtually every high end brand has a solid Perpetual Calendar in their collection in varying guises of delivery from easily recognisable dial layouts to futuristic digital set ups. One of the reasons the IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar has always enamoured collectors is a real appreciation from the brand on value. Putting history and mechanical prowess aside, for a totally in-house calibre designed decades before the user friendly CAD systems of today by one of the most visible names in the industry, IWC could have easily priced these flagship models much higher to most likely equal commercial success. This collection is one of the best examples of continuity of philosophy within any historic brand. IWC’s motto “Probus Schafusia” translates to “good solid craftsmanship from Schaffhausen” and their watches rarely tend to fail in delivering this claim. The Portugieser Perpetual Calendar is no different, offering a fantastic complication in a typically understated fashion with the expected finesse. In 2015, the 75th anniversary of this family, the Portugieser collection had a little facelift including the introduction of some new models like the clever Annual Calendar and reduction in size of the Yatch Club series. However the real stars of the show were
undoubtedly the redesigned Perpetual Calendars. First introduced in 1985, this complication was delivered in a then round cased Da Vinci model. Conceptually driven by the legendary Kurt Klaus, who incidentally is still with IWC; the main evolution here was not that the perpetual calendar was a new idea but rather that for the first time ever, delivered in a fashion where the entire complication was adjusted by the crown…not a fiddly pusher in sight! Also, the four digit year display was added for the first time too for good measure! Keeping in mind this was all worked on by hand through trial and error without modern computing ability making this achievement even more spectacular. In 2003, this sensational calendar complication was moved into the Portugieser’s larger case size instantly becoming a fan favourite.
New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF
COLUMN
The latest incarnation does not deviate from the original DNA very much but rather tidies up the collection. A theme amongst recent Portugieser releases has been to introduce a slightly bevelled sapphire glass with shorter lugs and curved straps so as to have the large case sizes fit better on most wrists. The four new models are all now 44.2mm in diameter and offered exclusively in either 4N Red Gold or White Gold. The layout of the subdials indicating the date, month and day indication remain the same but have been made marginally smaller to create the illusion of a cleaner dial. Two models of each are offered with single moonphase display and double moonphase display showing an accurate reading for both Northern and Southern hemispheres. The Single Moon version in Red Gold with silver dial is particularly special with a beautifully finished beige moon on a painted blue disc with applied golden stars. Glorious aesthetics aside, all four models have an exhibition sapphire caseback to show the huge and very well finished movement as well as IWC’s own in-house “Pellaton” seven day winding system offering a week worth of power reserve once fully wound. Invariably, an owner of such a timepiece will have others that may be more appropriate for other occasions so besides the
non fussy setting facility, the huge power reserve ensures you won’t have to reset it should you change your watches during the week. Furthermore, this complication was developed by Mr. Klaus not just to the expected distinction of perpetual calendars from quality Swiss marques but to the level of accuracy where the moonphase will only lose a full day of accuracy once every 577.5 years. A small test tube housing a kidney shaped part is provided in the box to be returned with your Perpetual Calendar so that once every 125 years, it can be adjusted to afford another century of accuracy. All in all, IWC have delivered a very commercial high complication piece that marries functionality and form with a continuation of an ideology set into motion back in 1985 and going strong to this day, much like their quite brilliant Perpetual Calendars. The single Moon variations retail at £28,500.00 in Red Gold and £30,900.00 in White Gold with grey dial. The Double Moon option is £29,500.00 in Red Gold with velvet brown dial and £31,900.00 for the White Gold with scintillating blue dial. All these models are now in-store, please feel free to visit the boutique to see them in the flesh or contact us for further details.

FINANCE WITH MATT GOLD
Lend me 100 and I’ll give you 99.6 back... Our financial insider reviews the global markets
The Japanese Central Bank started it and the European Central Bank took it to a different level. Japan’s government has been paid USD 464 million to borrow money since yields turned negative in October 2014. The European Central Bank (“ECB”) went full throttle with negative interest rates and lowered its overnight deposit from -0.3% to -0.4%. It is like taxing people with money in bank accounts. Mario Draghi, European Central Bank President said it out loud that interest rates would stay very low for at least another year. Mario was doing everything he could to stop Euro zone economy going into deflation. ECB extended its monthly asset purchase to EUR 80 billion a month and will add investment grade eurodenominated bonds issued by non-bank corporations. This means ECB is practically lending money to non-bank corporations directly. German mortgage bank Berlin Hyp AG made history by selling a EUR 500m 3-year bond at a yield of -0.162% last week. There is now over EUR 6 trillion of debt in the world that yields negative which is 29% of the Bloomberg Global Developed Sovereign Bond Index. Central Banks in Switzerland, Sweden, Japan, Denmark and ECB are all in the Negative Interest Rate Policy (“NIRP”) Club. What this could mean is that US interest rate and UK interest rate could eventually get to negative as well. Normal citizens are getting used to getting close to zero for their deposit in GBP. In the corporate world, its means blue chip companies would enjoy cheap borrowing and they are encouraged to leverage and expand through acquisition. Marriott and China’s Anbang Insurance Group have made Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc shareholders very happy. Marriott is keen to acquire Starwood that owns the Sheraton and Westin hotel brands to create the world’s largest hotel chain in the world. Marriott offered USD 12.2 billion or USD 72.08 per share in November last year, then Anbang put USD 13.16 billion cash on the table in March (equivalent to USD 78 per share). Marriot increased its offer to USD 13.6 billion with a stock and cash offer on 21 March, 2016 meaning Anbang may not get the hotels, but they have surely flexed their muscles. Last October, Anbang bought Waldorf Astoria New York for USD 1.95 billion, the largest-ever US real estate purchase by a Chinese buyer. Anbang is Beijing based, started in 2004, and has 30,000 staff and more than EUR 100 billion in assets. Anbang has less than 5% market share in the domestic insurance market in China. Cheap borrowing could also lead a company to the cliff. Valeant Pharmaceuticals was once a real gem in the fund managers’ eyes. Valeant made use of cheap funding available. Buying up companies and increasing the price of drugs. Their big wins included eye-care company Bausch & Lomb and gastrointestinal medicines
maker Salix Pharmaceuticals. Valeant also tried to buy Botox maker Allergan but that did not go through. Buy low sell high, rule number 1 in trading. Unfortunately, politics are not an exact science and politicians questioned Valeant’s aggressiveness in raising two heart drugs prices. The stock dropped 88% in the last 6 months as of 21 March, 2016. The company is trying to pivot its strategy through getting a new CEO. Billionaire investor Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital Management lost USD 764 million in its investment in Valeant. The board of Valeant invited Mr Ackman to join the board, a very expensive board seat. The new mega trend is that cheapest funding ever is available to corporates. The old trick is to leverage and buy low sell high. With a borrowing rate at zero it means an infinite rate of return in theory. If one company pays nothing to borrow money (or even gets paid to borrow money), any profit this company could make from the loan means huge return. Too good to be true? It happened before and probably still happens in some countries where if you know the right person in the government, you get cheap land, cheap construction loan and guaranteed buyers and tenants. Government toll road projects and green energy projects are a classic example. The negative interest rate could make this business model even more lucrative. This is exactly the purpose of ECB to encourage corporations to invest and grow. ECB and central banks in the NIRP Club believe this can fight against deflation and increase GDP. Before that happens, investors should expect to see more mergers and acquisitions in the stock market and stock prices could reach higher levels. There will be winners becoming losers like Valeant. Very few people have betted on Leicester City winning the league at the beginning of the season. Quite a few would guess Arsenal getting into top 4. Some investors would find the Starwood and Valeant, some may prefer to take FTSE or DAX index funds to catch the general trend.

3D Facial Contouring with
What better way to kick into Spring than with a fresh new you and the smart Omniya Mediclinic in London’s Knightsbridge is just where you will find it. Here, experienced Aesthetic Practitioner Natali Kelly has launched the very latest 3D Facial Contouring for Spring and Summer Beauty 2016. This is a complexion-perfecting and completely non-invasive treatment which aims to achieve a flawless, natural look by enhancing and creating light and shade to the face. Natali herself is a great believer in ‘less is more’ and combined with an emphasis on health and wellbeing, she offers bespoke and affordable nonsurgical aesthetic treatments and cosmetic dermatology. She believes that if you look good, you feel good and through her precise expertise she can enhance each client’s natural beauty and therefore their wellbeing too. When you first meet Natali, she completely puts you at your ease with her calm and professional manner and answers any questions with an impressive knowledge and a reassurance that you are in safe hands. She expertly explains the whole procedure from start to finish and examines your face to see which is the best way forward.
She also asks your own opinion and what you would like to achieve and then suggests which are the best options for you. Once you are happy with the consultation she will then take before pictures at every angle so that you can compare the end results and then treats the areas of concern with a numbing gel. To keep everything balanced and natural-looking, Natali treats the face as a ‘whole’ and once the skin is numb, she administers tiny doses of hyaluronic acid in order to perfectly enhance and subtly balance the facial features. The most you will feel is a tiny pin prick and Natali’s skills as an advanced injector become quite obvious. In keeping with her beliefs of using minimal product for maximum results, these doses of acid contour and strobe the cheeks, forehead, chin, jawline, nose and lips as required. When administered around the eye and cheek area it balances the face by lifting the jawline and ensures a flawless complexion with natural, fresh results. After pictures are then taken so that you can see the instant results for yourself. There is no down time and the most you will have is perhaps a little bruising or slight redness and swelling around the treated area and you may experience some tenderness

but this is only temporary and will be gone in a few days. Well worth the end result. This can even be performed in your lunch hour as it is possible to return to work afterwards. Natali only uses Allergan (which is the most tried and trusted and researched brand on the market today) for her choice of hyaluronic acid and because it is one hundred per cent bio degradable it provides the highest level of safety at all times. No more than two syringes are administered and the treatment lasts between twelve to eighteen months depending on each individual. There is no doubt that this revolutionary 3D Facial Contouring treatment can restore beauty and youth and by lifting the face you are left with a slimmer, less tired, fresh, luminous and more attractive look. This emotionally improves the way you feel about yourself and contributes to your entire well-being making this a favourite with Natali’s celebrity clients. As a practitioner and cosmetic dermatologist with an enviable client list, Natali believes in a truly modern approach to beauty and that inner wellness achieved through her non-invasive treatments plays a vital role in achieving optimal results. Emphasis is also placed on subtle balancing, restoring and enhancing beauty to enrich life. She also believes in total discretion at all times so if you fancy a boost to your appearance and general well-being and want to look great this summer, book yourself an appointment. Prices start from £700.

Don’t Push It with Alex Castro
Alex Castro is one of London’s top personal trainers. With over ten years experience within the fitness industry, Alex trains his clients in the City alongside working at Barrys Bootcamp as an instructor at both their Euston and Moorgate branches.
As a young boy growing up in North London, I spent hours at the basketball courts behind our house and, as you can probably imagine, I only stopped for food or nightfall. I ended up playing for England and was playing semi professionally until a twisted lower vertebra injury (which I received playing rugby!) stopped me. Not being one to sit still, I decided that I really wanted to challenge myself physically and I took up Thai boxing for 5 years – those years were certainly the leanest I have ever been! Nowadays, my own fitness pursuits generally revolve around CrossFit, olympic lifting, calisthenics and walking my 3 year old golden Labrador, Buddy, although I run 5-6 times a week and despite not having the ideal running body type, I happily came 9th in the Wembley Mens Health Survivial of the Fittest 10k course last November (at 44 minutes). I have been a personal trainer for the last decade and am now based near Liverpool Street, in a convenient location for my high-flying clients! I train both men and women and I absolutely love my job. Together with personal training, I have taught at a whole range of gyms and was lucky enough to be a reformer pilates instructor at Bootcamp Pilates for 4 years before becoming a permanent fixture at Barrys Bootcamp, which is a boutique gym (headquartered in the USA) offering an hour long workout including 30 minutes of interval cardiovascular treadmill routines and 30 minutes of strength training with free weights, medicine balls, pilates balls and other equipment. But enough about me. In April our fine city is taken over by the London Marathon. For those of you reading this and embarking on your epic journey, good luck and hopefully, you have reached your peak mileage and are now tapering down before the big day. You may be finding this part of your training programme the most challenging, but you certainly need to make sure you don't undo all the hard work you have done to this point.
Overtraining, and not just for marathon runners, is certainly on the increase. Exercise, because of all of the wonderful things it offers us, mentally and aesthetically, can become addictive. My clients who excel in their field of work and who are already busy, hard working individuals, seem to be those who also place the greatest demands on their bodies. If your muscles are feeling sore and heavy when you work out, you feel like you have plateaued in an area you were previously improving, you are seeing more niggles and you are becoming more apprehensive about exercising, you are likely to be overtraining. The biggest risk of overtraining, is injury and, obviously any injury will only ultimately hamper your fitness goals so please, listen to your body and have some proper rest. Don't forget that the body needs a chance to regenerate and repair before the muscles can exercise properly again. Similarly, and once again one for the marathon runners out there (and anyone undertaking regular exercise), focusing on mobility and a wider range of movement, can positively affect both speed and performance. Being more pliable will generally keep you 'in the game' longer. Even if you are clocking up huge miles each week, sitting at a desk for the rest of your day will harm your flexibility. This is where stretching comes in and I would generally recommend dynamic stretching as you are likely to feel the benefits of a small workout because you will increase your blood flow and body temperature along the way. My three favourite dynamic stretches are: (1) starting in a plank and lunging so that your right foot sits outside your right hand and turning and reaching upwards with your left arm (and alternating this movement to the other side) this is good for your hip flexors; (2) starting in a plank and moving to a downwards dog movement and reaching your right arm back to touch your left toe (and alternating) - this is good for lower vertebra flexibility and rotation; and (3) starting in a sumo squat (knees wide, toes pointed outwards) placing hands down directly onto ground and straightening your legs - this is good for the hammies. Go for 10 on each side and 20 of the squats! Good Luck!

Abu Dhabi Where tradition meets wealth and the outcome is somewhat breathtaking. It’s also a great place to indulge in a little adventure thanks to the vast expanse of desert right on the doorstep.

Celebrity Cruises Constellation
Abu Dhabi It is hard to believe that just 70 years ago you would have found nothing but pearl divers and the occasional beduin tribe passing by on a visit to Abu Dhabi. Nevertheless, today it is home to a bustling city which has staked its claim as the capital of the United Arab Emirates thanks to the incredible history of its unification. Abu Dhabi city is not only the capital, but Abu Dhabi as an emirate makes up over 80% of the total land mass that makes up the UAE, boasts 400km of pristine coastline, thriving mangroves and over 200 islands on the stunning Arabian Gulf. Although incredibly young in relative terms, the region is one of the fastest growing in the world with neighbouring Dubai continually pushing the boundaries of modern architecture, and Abu Dhabi is by no means being left behind. Furthermore, what Dubai lacks in certain cultural respects is available in abundance an hour along the coast in Abu Dhabi. From thrilling theme parks to incredible cultural landmarks, visitors can experience anything from sand surfing and wake boarding to kayaking through the
mangroves or a spot of camel trekking through the desert and all just a seven hour flight away from London. The diversity of this emirate is truly remarkable, from endless sands to what is quickly becoming one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. It provides world class facilities that will only see the emirate continue to thrive over time. Not only are a number of leading hotels opening up in Abu Dhabi such as the first Four Seasons Hotel and Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Residences Emirates Pearl this year but also construction on the highly anticipated Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island is continuing at pace. The museum, designed by Jean Nouvel, is set to establish the emirate as the cultural hub of the Middle East and will feature loan pieces from some of France’s leading cultural institutions, including works by da Vinci and Van Gogh. It will be shortly followed by the Zayed National Museum and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi which are all set to make waves in the world of architectural design let alone the cultural implications.
One of the more recent finished additions to Abu Dhabi is the new state-of-the-art Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal in Zayed Port which opened in December 2015. The new facility has already welcomed cruises sinces its opening, but Celebrity Cruises is set to call it home later this year with the announcement that they will homeport in Abu Dhabi for the winter season 16/17, offering a selection of Arabian Gulf Cruises between nine and fifteen nights. In celebration of the new cruise offering, Celebrity Cruises has also announced that adventurer and TV personality, Ben Fogle, will be extending his programme of Great Adventure shore excursions to include the new Abu Dhabi stop, and there is more than enough to explore. As the brand’s ‘Destination Expert’, Ben’s latest thrillseeking excursion, available for all guests on-board when calling into Abu Dhabi, will include an exhilarating 4x4 Jeep experience through the desert, camel riding across the sands and sandboarding on the dunes before settling down to enjoy a traditional local banquet under the stars.
ABU DHABI
TRAVEL
Proving that Abu Dhabi is full of surprises, the Western Region of Al Gharbia is largely made up of the Rub Al Khali – Empty Quarter – the largest sand desert in the world. Surrounded by these enormous sand dunes is the 5-star Anantara Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort, around which scenes from the latest Star Wars film were shot meaning every stretch of desert you see in the film is real, there was no need to use special effects in order to create a seemingly endless horizon. However the region was first made famous by the British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger in his book Arabian Sands, which chronicles Thesiger’s travels in the desert with his Emirati and Omani companions in the 1940s and 50s. “The Empty Quarter offered me the chance to win distinction as a traveller; but I believed that it could give me more than this, that in those empty wastes I could find the peace that comes with solitude, and, among the Bedu, comradeship in a hostile world.” Sir Wilfred Thesiger, Arabian Sand.
Ben Fogle recreated Thesiger’s epic journey with James Cracknell in 2013. The pair used original food, gear, equipment and camels to trek more than 700km across the Empty Quarter without a guide. The only concession they made to the original journey was, believe it or not, to wear shoes! His latest adventure will of course not put you in any danger of starvation at least. The new Abu Dhabi Great Adventure shore excursion complements Celebrity Cruises’ current range of adventurous and immersive in-destination experiences curated by Ben Fogle which includes rafting in Rome, hiking in Montenegro, mountain biking in Malaga and a speedboat adventure in Helsinki Archipelago. “For me, the Arabian Sea is such an alluring region and Abu Dhabi in particular has so much to offer that every time I go back I still feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface. I’ve designed this new tour to appeal to those keen to immerse themselves in fascinating cultures, indulge in great food and to truly experience the amazing desert. I hope Celebrity Cruises’ guests find this part of the world just as magical as I do.” Ben Fogle.
ABU DHABI
There are a number of must-visits when holidaying in Abu Dhabi. Al Ain is just ninety minutes from Abu Dhabi and is fondly titled the ‘Oasis City’. It’s one of the world’s oldest permanently inhabited settlements and home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The vibrant Camel Market is one of the last of its kind in the region, and visitors should make a visit to the Qasr Al Muwaiji, a brand new museum built around a century-old fortress that was once home to generations of Abu Dhabi’s ruling Al Nahyan dynasty. With interactive stations, you are welcomed into the former home of the current President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and guided through the fascinating journey that resulted in the creation of the UAE taken by nation’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan who was also born in Al Ain. You should also visit Al Jahili Fort whilst in Al Ain, built in the late 19th century, it is now home to a permanent exhibition about British adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger. Back in Abu Dhabi city, there are even more impressive sites to behold. One such marvel is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Placed fourth in TripAdvisor’s list of the world’s top 25 landmarks last year, this incredible mosque is able to accommodate 41,000 worshippers and boasts 82 domes, over 1,000 columns, 24-carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world’s largest handmade carpet which weighs 35 tonnes, measures 5,627 square metres, and took a staggering 1,200 women two years to make. It took 11 years to complete and comprises work, materials and expertise from across the world. Sheikh Zayed’s dream was to create a place where everyone was welcome and so went about sourcing pieces for the mosque from every corner of the earth. Unfortunately he was not able to admire this breathtaking building for himself as he passed away before its completion. However, in memory of the founding father of the UAE, a mausoleum was built which sits on the grand mosque grounds and mirrors the appearance of its considerably larger counterpart.
If history is what you’re after then look no further than the Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey. This ninety minute cruise aboard a traditional pearling boat, seated on Arabian floor cushions provides you with a wealth of knowledge on how the country’s forefathers dedicated their lives to diving for oysters in the hope of finding valuable pearls inside - all while you enjoy locally-made Arabic coffee and dates. You can even try your hand at opening living, natural oysters and will receive a souvenir pearl at the end of the journey. For those looking to get a fantastic view of across the city, then you should head up to the Observation Deck at 300, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. Located on Level 74 of the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers hotel, the Observation Deck at 300 is the highest public viewing gallery in Abu Dhabi and offers stunning views across the city and Arabian Gulf. Entry is free for Jumeirah guests and AED 75 for non-guests, of which AED 50 is redeemable against food and drink purchased inside. It’s not licensed so no alcohol is available but it’s famous for its afternoon teas and ‘mocktails’. The striking 66-storey Jumeirah at Etihad Towers hotel offers incredible panoramic views of the city skyline and the Arabian Gulf and is the perfect place to look down at the expansive Emirates Palace Hotel. Also in the Jumeriah is acclaimed British chef Michael Caines ‘Dinner at Pearls’ restaurant. Known for his two Michelin Starred Gidleigh Park restaurant in Dartmoor, this is Caines first restaurant outside of the UK and opened in October last year. With cuisine featuring so heavily across Abu Dhabi, it comes as no surprise that the offering is good. You can also enjoy the rooftop bar before and after dinner to soak up the last rays of sunlight and the mesmerising lights of the city at night. Petrol heads and thrill seekers alike will want to head to Abu Dhabi’s entertainment island, Yas Island. Vast attractions include Yas Marina Circuit, which hosts the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix; Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the planet’s largest indoor theme park and home of the world’s fastest rollercoaster,

If you are feeling a little hot after the excitement from Ferrari World, then you can head round the corner to the equally enjoyable Yas Waterworld where you can indulge in some childish antics on the slides or relax by the tranquil poolside and enjoy the sun. To make your trip to Yas Island that much easier, you can also stay there thanks to the iconic Yas Viceroy which straddles the F1 circuit and is the only hotel in the world to do so. This is not just a hotel for race weekend though, it is a great place to stay to enjoy Abu Dhabi. Just minutes from the airport, it is incredibly easy to find thanks to the unique architecture and it’s not just the building that impresses. Voted as the best restaurant in Abu Dhabi, Yas Viceroy’s Indian establishment Angar is a true delight, but you don’t have to restrict yourself as they have an impressive six restaurants to choose from. You can also enjoy Skylite Rooftop Lounge for a relaxing evening under the stars with an excellent cocktail list to indulge in. The Grey Goose Bar Grey Goose have joined forces with Harvey Nichols to completely redesign the Fifth Floor bar. The updated bar features a new interior which play on the heritage of the Fifth Floor Bar, whilst drawing inspiration from classic French luxury, with leather, brass, marble and dark wood employed to give the bar an elegant but contemporary feel. The upholstery is subtly coloured in lighter shades of white and grey amidst splashes of red and blue that nod to Grey Goose’s French provenance. Cosy, plush blue leather banquettes and private booths allow for intimate meets to take place with views stretching over Knightsbridge and beyond, while high-backed stools at the bar offer guests a more lively drinking experience. The pièce de résistance however is the central lone 3D goose at the heart of the bar perched beneath a mirrored acrylic ceiling disc. You can enjoy the specially created Le Fizz Twists menu which takes the iconic Grey Goose Le Fizz to new heights. Delivering a unique twist on the original, each cocktail uses different expressions from the House: Grey Goose Original, L’Orange, Le Citron, La Poire and the masterfully mixed spirit Grey Goose VX Vodka Exceptionnelle. The menu will also receive seasonal updates to ensure you find the perfect drink to quench your thirst. Each cocktail offers a surprising flavour that you wouldn’t necessarily choose on a normal basis, but will revolutionise your cocktail drinking habits. You can also enjoy lunch or a light snack with your cocktails from the light bites menu meaning so you don’t have to leave the comfort of your plush leather seat to eat.

Polpo Located on the fifth floor of the iconic department store Harvey Nichols, Polpo Knightsbridge recently opened serving up a fantastic range of Italian small plates and of course, prosecco. Taking inspiration from the rustic back-street wine bars of Venice, the restaurant’s menu features an array of simple, but wonderfully delicious small plates from the region of Veneto. Tucked away on the fifth floor, Polpo’s interiors reflect the gloriously faded elegance of La Serenissima and the renowned charm of the humble bacaro. Reservations are available from 12pm until 5pm and in the evening are available on a walk-in basis adding to the relaxed atmosphere of the cosy space. Signature dishes and must-try highlights on the menu include nibbles ‘cicheti’ such as fried stuffed olives, and ham hock and mustard crostini. Small plates include chilli and crab linguine, pizzetta with prosciutto, scamorza and pickled radicchio, a variety of generously sized meatballs and spaghetti, and sliced flank steak with porcini while the dessert list features flourless pistachio and almond cake, chocolate salami; and Tiramisu pot. Polpo would not be complete without a spritz, and served with either Aperol or Campari, alongside Negronis and Bellinis and other delicious cocktails such as the Cynar Gin Fizz. The exclusively Italian wine list begins with Polpo’s own label Garganega, Corvina and Prosecco, from £18 per bottle. Perfect for catching up with friends or colleagues after a spot of shopping, Polpo offers fantastic choices whatever your appetite and budget with dishes starting at just £3 ranging to £10.

The Orrery, Marylebone Situated at the Northern end of Marylebone High Street in London’s West One and away from the hustle and bustle of the main shopping area, this three AA Rosette award winning restaurant was originally a nineteenth century stable block. The restaurant itself is actually located on the first floor and its magnificent, arched feature windows overlook St Marylebone Church gardens in the heart of Marylebone village. Offering classic French cooking, the refined and elaborately modern menu is faultless in its presentation and comes with a modern twist provided by experienced Head Chef Igor Tymchyshyn. Igor has been at the Orrery since April 2008 but was appointed as Chef Patron in January 2016. With his inventive touches, the attention to detail and the creativity he displays in all his dishes is quite obvious and he sources only the best British, seasonal ingredients. When you go up the stairs to enter this relaxed and stylish venue you notice that there is a lively bar to one side. However, you can go straight into the restaurant where you can soak in the luxurious atmosphere of the beautiful dining room and observe its glass roofed area and chic décor whilst you peruse the impressive menu. The ever helpful and well-mannered staff are always on hand to cater for any advice or questions you may need to assist you in your choices. The extensive wine list is amongst London’s finest and the head sommelier will also help you make the right choices for your chosen dishes.
Although the á la carte menu is billed as three courses, it is in actual fact much more because along with their speciality bread, you are given a little beignet which is stuffed with melted cheese and then along comes a muse bouche of cauliflower in a delicious cream sauce with chopped mushrooms at the bottom. All very delightful and expertly served. Actual starters include some of the biggest and tastiest scallops you have ever seen in the Seared Orkney Scallops with Jerusalem artichoke and apple velouté or the Dorset crab with wasabi avocado and mango which is almost too pretty to eat. For the main course the Dorset sea bass with herbed crust, wild mushroom and beetroot with horseradish cream delicately displayed around the dish or the Tournedos Rossini with sauce Périgourdine are both equally as nice. Dessert choices range from Citrus and Bourbon crème br lèe with a clementine sorbet to a chocolate tart with lychee sorbet or you can opt for a Farmhouse cheese selection of your choice from the legendary cheese trolley. A complimentary sorbet after your main course clears the palette and the sommelier will then advise you on a dessert wine. Orrery exudes elegance and style and the menus with all its extras offers extremely good value for money, especially in this very a uent area of Marylebone.
Prices for a three course meal start from £55 per person.

Threadneedle Walk provides the inconspicuous location for M Restaurants’ city destination, but the subtelties end there.
Steak is readily available across London with every restaurant keen to demonstrate their worth, showcasing various cuts of meat and offering something ‘unique’. Most deserve at least one visit - you may enjoy the style of one restaurant over the other which turns out to be a different opinion to the ones you’ve heard...or read - but few are worthy of the attention that this city spot deserves. Hidden in the heart of the City just off of Threadneedle Street, this sleek looking restaurant packs a lot more than a mere steak. Built on an expert knowledge of wine - as well as beef - M Restaurant is the ideal place to visit if you are looking for the perfect steak dinner with fantastic wine. The knowledge the sommelier delivers with every new glass of wine adds to the experience
and aids in the drinking pleasure. You can ask for the wine to be chosen for you and you will not be disappointed. Simply provide a few pointers as to your likes and dislikes and the perfect Malbec will be produced to suit you. Even as a keen Malbec drinker, you will be surprised by some of the wines on offer. A fantastic choice as we move towards the warmer months is an intriguing Doña Silvina, “Fresh” Malbec which is served chilled. You may be turning away in disgust at reading that, but do not knock it until you have tried it! Of course, you won’t just be interested in the wine however impressive the selection is to choose from. Fortunately they have an equally inviting menu for food. Ranging from raw dishes to salads and of course steaks, the menu is crafted using ideas from six countries which coincides with the origin country of their steaks. USA, Argentina, France, Botswana, Japan and Australia all feature with differing cuts including a USDA Prime rib-eye on the bone and Kobe Grade 10 fillet. What’s more, they start at just £18.00. You will not be disappointed with a visit here and will find yourself returning...regularly.

Theo Randall at the InterContinental Theo Randall at the InterContinental reopens with interior refresh and enhanced menu to celebrate 10 years Celebrating his tenth anniversary at the InterContinental London Park Lane, Chef Theo Randall has given his restaurant and menu a complete refresh with new dishes to complement his much-loved signatures. Offering simple, rustic Italian cuisine, the light and modern restaurant allows guests privacy at tables while still feeling quite open through the use of anodised brass screens. Other materials such as Terrazzo and Carrera marble; and muted olive green and grey tones have also been used to pay homage to Italian culture. As well as the regular covers, the new restaurant includes a high level Kitchen Table designed for up to eight, which looks straight into the heart of the kitchen, where guests can enjoy a tasting menu created 24 hours beforehand, guaranteeing a truly seasonal and unique dining experience. The interior update has introduced a second private room which connects via a sliding door and seats up to 40 guests. When connected together the room can welcome a seated event of 60 and 100 for a drinks reception and also hosts Theo’s regular masterclasses. Theo’s new dishes celebrate the simple yet robust flavours of Italian cooking, with seasonality at the heart. Highlights include the delicious taglierini con gamberetti e carciofi (handmade pasta with brown shrimps, artichoke, chilli and butter); and and Trota salmonata (roasted wild salmon trout with slow cooked fennel, datterini tomatoes, Italian spinach, capers and Taggiasche olives).
Other menu must-try’s have to include the Insalata di granchio (fresh Devon crab with Florence fennel, dandelion and Sardinian Bottarga); Branzino al cartoccio (Sea Bass baked with porcini mushrooms, fennel, thyme, vermouth and Italian spinach; and last but not least the wonderfully sweet Clementine sorbet from the dessert menu. We couldn’t get enough. Overall the restaurant is slick, clean and the food is nothing short of delicious. Pair that with a great seasonal wine menu created to complement the new menu thanks to knowledgeable Head Sommelier, Vittorio Gentile, and you have the makings of a brilliantly authentic Italian night out.

HARRODS WINE
The Oenophilist
with Edward Gerard, Wine Buyer for Harrods
Edward erard started his career cycling cases of fine wine round the SW1 and SW3 postcodes. Some 13 years later after a stint in the A, and having extensively traveled and tasted his way around the wine world he finds himself with the enviable ob of selecting the vast range available in the Wine ooms at arrods.
that comes from the pebble and schist soil, the finish is wonderfully clean, crisp and pure making this the perfect choice for these spring and summer seasons. On the red wine front, this year I’m again going to head outside of my, usually traditional, comfort zone and will be enjoying a Portuguese red that had me virtually speechless when I tried it a few weeks ago. I have for a few years now believed that Portugal is the most exciting country to watch right now in regards to red wines. As a country they are now producing wines that have all the critics talking and awarding them very high marks indeed. In the UK they are starting to maintain listings in our top restaurants and are garnering more and more presence in our best independent stores. My choice comes from Casa Ferreirinha who produce Portugal’s most sort after wine the Barca Vehla which changes hands for sums north of £350 per bottle. However it’s their entry level 2013 Vinha Grande Tinto that had me tongue tied and at just £13.95 this represents the best value I’ve seen in years. The nose is full of vibrant dark berry notes and hints of cedar and lavender, on the palate we are treated to a wonderfully rich and homogenous wine, where the fruit, tannins and acidity are in perfect harmony. It is full of blackberry and blueberry fruit but also backed up by earthier notes and hints of cedar too, there is a lovely balance to the richness and purity here and that follows on to the long and satisfying finish. I can think of no better red for a summer barbeque this year.
The daffodils are out and it’s light in the morning, Spring has finally sprung. April is one of my favourite months of the year, the air is still crisp and fresh, the daylight hours continue to grow and if we are lucky then a few of us might even feel ready to break out the Barbeque at some point. With this in mind I thought I’d focus this month on just two wines that will undoubtedly form the foundation of my drinking wines this Spring/Summer. My white wine pick this year comes from the famous Loire Valley but this is not a Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre or Pouilly Fume nor is it a Chenin Blanc from Montlouis or Vouvray. No, this wine is made with the grape called Melon de Bourgogne that many of you will never have heard of but at least some will have drunk it, that is because this is the grape that Muscadet is produced from. My pick for the Spring and Summer months is the outstandingly good 2015 Domaine des Herbauges, Muscadet Cotes de Grandlieu and at just £12.95 it offers amazing value. Roughly eighty percent of Muscadet on the market comes from the ‘Sevre et Maine’ sub appellation and whilst many of these are very nice with lovely freshness and mineral notes, they tend towards the leaner style and lack complexity. This Muscadet comes from the much smaller area ‘Cotes de Grandlieu’ which takes its name from the local Grandlieu lake that aids the regions microclimate and for me produces superior wines to the larger ‘Sevre et Maine’. This particular wine starts off with beautiful fresh notes of Galia melon, citrus peel and a touch of pear, on the palate these flavours are joined with richer notes of Cantaloupe melon and a stunning minerality

Marathon Sized Dim Sum
On average, Marathon runners will burn between 2900 and 3500 calories as they attempt to conquer the daunting 26.3 mile Virgin Money London Marathon course this year. You will be forgiven for wanting to indulge once the challenge has been completed, furthermore, rewarded for it. With energy levels at rock bottom, what better way to replenish than with a free dim sum dish at any one of Royal China Group’s six restaurants across London. Runners simply have to present their medal to a member of staff on arrival. Royal China is renowned for its Dim Sum, which is served daily from Noon – 5pm. This traditional Chinese cuisine is often steamed or baked meaning that you won’t be replacing the lost energy with rubbish, but delicious food with nutritional benefit. Diners can enjoy favourites such as steamed seafood dumplings with spicy sauce; steamed fillet of beef in chili oil sauce; and baked ‘Char Siu’ pork puffs. Wherever you find yourself following the Marathon, there are plenty of options to choose from and you can be sure that one will be in easy reach. The six restaurants are spread across London including Queensway, Fulham and Harrow in the west, Baker Street centrally and Canary Riverside in the east, so there is no reason to miss out on the opportunity for some free dim sum! You can of course indulge in other dishes from the menu whilst replenishing those energy levels, just to make sure. Potentially not as good for you as the steamed treats, but nonetheless delicious are a whole host of traditional and modern Chinese dishes including crispy fried and braised prawn served in bird’s nest; deep fried fillet of Dover Sole with spicy salt and of course, crispy aromatic duck. Just make sure you remember to pace yourself during both the running and the eating and you should be fine.

Japanese Road Rocket gets a New Look Nissan’s exceptional GT-R has received an update both inside and out. Recently revealed at the New York International Auto Show, the MY17 GT-R is set to push the boundaries of road car performance even further with major driving enhancements also being included in the update. Don’t blink or you will most definitely miss it!
Discovery Sport Almost seventy years of history and countless owners have lead the Land Rover brand to this, the latest out of the stable; Discovery Sport. Not only is this a new car for the marque, but also brings with it the first member of the new ‘Discovery Family’ creating a new branch on the tree similar to that of the Range Rover Sport or Evoque. There are some clear indicators as to the company’s design direction with the instantly recognisable Range Rover front grille sneaking on to this Land Rover. Although undeniably similar, there are slight variations to work with making it an altogether different proposition. The functionality of this car is incredibly versatile when compared with the likes of the Range Rover Evoque. Close in wheelbase size to its Range cousin, the Discovery Sport actually provides space for seven should you require it. And that’s not all, there is still room to pack some shopping in too. It is this that distinguishes it from the bigger, heavier Discovery. Thanks to its size, the Discovery Sport is able to perform better with a 2.0-litre diesel than its 3.0-litre V6 sister. Producing a respectable 182PS with 430Nm of torque, the automatic will take you from zero to sixty in 8.4 seconds. You may be thinking ‘well that doesn’t sound very sport-like’ and you would be correct, if you were comparing it to actual sports cars. Needless to say, Land Rover haven’t tried to create a sports car with seven seats, what they have set out to achieve is a broader range of vehicles for their expanding customer base. A customer base which is including a younger demographic who are not heading to the hills every weekend but are simply looking for a practical yet aesthetically appealing car to transport their growing families. And this is a positive step forward for them. The technology to perform the ridiculous climbs and acrobatics that we have all come to expect from any and every car out of the factory is still there and still tried, tested and somewhat unrivaled, so if you did happen to venture to a hill at the weekend, you should still have no problems conquering. In real-world circumstances you can enjoy the stability that the impressive all-wheel-drive system provides and rest assured that when it rains or snows, you won’t have to worry about getting stuck. Able to pull up to 2200kg and take on inclines up to 21 degrees, you will be hard pushed to find something in your everyday tasks that will stump the Discovery Sport. There is actually very little that you will recognise from the current Discovery on this car. The front is - as we’ve already established - reminiscent of its Range Rover counterparts and the rear design is unlike anything from the current range. Land Rover have really tried to establish this as a stand-alone car in the family and for all intents and purposes have achieved it. Its sleeker lines and rounded features deliver the sportier appearance they were looking for whilst maintaining a certain level of brand identity.

YOUR DRIVE
Although smaller in both appearance and physically, there would be few situations in which you would actually require the additional pulling power or slight increase in interior volume. Now you consider the OTR price for the top level HSE Luxury Discovery Sport - £43,400 compared to the entry level starting point for its big sister at £43,995 and you begin to question just
what gradient you are looking to take on and how much the trailer you’ve got weighs. Either way, this is the perfect entry point to begin your journey in the world of Land Rover. Thanks to the impressive fuel economy compared to its sisters and cousins, it is a much more viable option for many who are stuck deciding between a bigger and a smaller car for precisely this reason. Of course you won’t be breaking any records over the quarter-mile, but you will certainly get there in one piece. Using a monocoque construction, the body combines a mix of high-strength steel, ultra-high-strength boron steel and lightweight aluminium panels, ensuring a strong, stiff and light base for impressive cornering performance and high levels of torsional rigidity. The car also delivers an all-new multi-link rear axle heightening agility, increasing axle articulation and, together with lightweight aluminium suspension components and carefully calibrated dampers, enables an unrivalled level of composure no matter what the surface conditions. The new rear axle has also been key in providing additional space at the rear allowing the relatively small footprint to accommodate 7 seats by minimising the intrusion of the rear suspension.

DISCOVERY SPORT Developing the underlying engineering has provided Land Rover with the opportunity to dramatically alter the setup of the car compared with the Discovery. Thanks to the body construction, they have been able to push the wheels further out to the corners of the vehicle, immediately lending itself to a more agile, aggressive and sporty appearance. This has also provided the perfect canvas on which to create the sleek new aesthetic that Discovery Sport brings. Rounded corners work to reduce the appearance of size whilst the low profile supports the cars appeal as an agile road car. It’s not only on the outside where the designers have spent all of their time, the interior has received an update on features found in some predecessors that were in desperate need of it. The cabin offers an inviting, sleek and sophisticated space which can be customised depending on the trim level you choose. The entry level doesn’t offer much in the way of comfort or sophistication, but if you move up the trim ladder you will find it becomes much more appealing. We still find the slightly complex and confusing infotainment system which works through the built-in 5-inch TFT screen, but there are some improvements. Fewer menu branches than previous versions make for a much easier and safer time driving and changing the radio whilst maintaining the same level of options. Elsewhere, the driver interface is simple and smart. Clear controls allow you to alter the drive mode easily and turn the heating up without issue too. All of the controls are housed together on the central console and grouped as you would expect a soft-touch surround providing an aesthetic distinction against the gloss-black surround which creates a tactile user-interface easy for the driver to navigate. As a first release this car delivers a fantastic package combining numerous features found across the rest of the range in a fairly compact and stylish body. There are still some improvements that could take this car to a whole new level, one being a more luxurious trim option that would compete with rival premium SUV’s without taking the market from Discovery or the Range Rover model line thanks to its unique setup. The fact that they have been able to find space for seven through clever engineering speaks volumes as to where the group is going and it will be exciting to see what else they can add to the new ‘Discovery Family’.

a heart pounding driving experience
The new GT-R’s exterior gets a complete makeover across the front end. The new chrome matte finish “V-motion” grille represents one of Nissan’s latest design signatures. It has been enlarged to provide better engine cooling and features an updated mesh pattern. A new bonnet, which flows flawlessly from the grille, has been significantly reinforced, contributing to stability during high-speed driving. A freshly-designed front spoiler lip and front bumpers with finishers situated immediately below the headlights give the new GT-R the look of a pure-bred racecar, while generating high levels of front downforce. The GT-R’s familiar wind-cutting shape defines its profile, but the side sills have been pushed out to improve air flow. The rear of the car also received a thorough makeover. While the GT-R’s hallmark fourring rear lights remain, look closely and you’ll notice new bodywork to help improve air flow, as well as side air vents next to the quad exit exhaust pipes. Also, the belt line that separates the lower black section from the body panel has been heightened to give the car a wider and more aggressive look from the rear. These exterior changes don’t just result in a sportier-looking car; they create an aerodynamically efficient vehicle, with less drag but retaining the same amount of downforce as the current GT-R to keep the car stable at high speeds. Step into the cabin, and you’re greeted by a premium interior that is befitting a high-performance sports car of this caliber. The entire dashboard and instrument panel are new and covered with high-quality leather artfully stitched together with Takumi precision. The shape of the dashboard adopts a “horizontal flow” that delivers a sense of increased stability for the car’s front-seat occupants, while the line from the instrument cluster to the centre console provides a distinct driveroriented environment for those behind the steering wheel. The centre dashboard layout has also been improved and simplified. Integrated navigation and audio controls reduce the number of switches from 27 in the previous model to only 11 in the MY17 model. An enlarged 8-inch touchscreen monitor features large icons on the display screen to make it easy to operate. A new display command control on the carbon-fibre centre console allows easy operation. nissan.co.uk
The paddle shifts are now mounted to the new steering wheel, allowing drivers to change gears in midturn without having to take their hands off the wheel. The paddles themselves, along with the ventilation controls, have improved feel and better sound when engaged or adjusted. “As the icon of Nissan’s driving performance, the GT-R continues to evolve. With the signature V-Motion grille, the GT-R now possesses the latest Nissan design language. Its exceptional aerodynamic performance and upgraded interior have given the GT-R a more mature character, which will continue into the future,” said Nissan’s Executive Design Director, Mamoru Aoki. The GT-R’s award-winning 3.8-litre 24-valve twinturbocharged V6 engine—each unit handcrafted by its own TAKUMI technician—now delivers 570 PS at 6,800 rpm and 637Nm of torque. The engines are the definition of TAKUMI expertise. The improved output, which is the result of individual ignition-timing control of the cylinders and extra boost from the turbochargers gives acceleration in the mid- to high-ranges (3,200 rpm and above). It comes mated to a thoroughly refined 6-speed dual-clutch transmission that features smoother shifts and less noise. That familiar GT-R tone also has been upgraded with an engine that has never sounded better. The resonance of the new titanium exhaust and Active Sound Enhancement (ASE) enhance the driving experience. The GT-R has always been regarded as one of the world’s best handling machines, and for MY17, its cornering abilities have become even better. A more rigid body structure and new suspension result in better stability through quick lateral transitions and higher overall cornering speed. Providing the grip are sticky 20 inch tyres, wrapped around new “Y-spoke” machinefinished forged aluminum wheels. Despite all the performance enhancements, the MY17 GT-R is the most comfortable model to date, with a new sense of elegance and civility that one would rarely find in such a high-performance supercar. The new GT-R exhibits a smoother ride quality than the outgoing model, and its cabin remains much quieter at all speeds helped by new sound absorption materials. “The new GT-R delivers a heart-pounding driving experience at all times and on any road for whoever sits in the driver’s seat. We have continued to push its performance boundaries to the outer limits—it’s even more potent than before. At the same time, more refinement has been added to take the entire driving experience to an entirely new level. We’re proud to bring you what we feel is the ultimate GT that possesses amazing performance, newfound civility and a rich racing history,” Hiroshi Tamura, the Chief Product Specialist of the GT-R.

Just what the Doctor ordered...
1933 Lanchester LA10 Doctors Coupe The Lanchester Ten was sold by The Lanchester Motor Company Limited from September 1932 until 1951, so this is a very early example. It was quite different from previous Lanchesters, the Ten was only the second under Lanchester’s new owner’s Daimler-linked Lanchester range. Part of the thinking behind BSA’s acquisition of Lanchester was, in consideration of the international economic depression, to extend the BSA group’s range of cars into the sectors between those filled by Daimler and the three-wheeled ‘cars’ of BSA Cars without affecting Daimler’s super-luxury image. Ultimately the smallest Lanchester became far too expensive for the size of car it was, few were sold hence the end of production in 1951. This is a very rare aluminium bodied convertible version finished in striking burgundy over black coachwork complete with rear dickie seat. The car has received an earlier restoration with new interior as well as new wiring loom, carburetor, tyres and exhaust. The four-cylinder engine and pre-selector gearbox have both been rebuilt. This car runs on unleaded fuel, so there is no reason to keep it couped up in the garage. Take a look for yourself and you might find that you’re enjoying the English countryside in a rare classic.

SAVILLS
Furnishing Your Dreams with Ben Newman Savills Buy to Let Specialist As expected, we saw a flurry of activity in the Buy-to-Let market over the past few months, with investors looking to complete prior to the 31st March deadline, as additional homes purchases now incur an extra 3 per cent of stamp duty. The three key Buy-to-Let drivers continue to be retirement planning, long term investment or as properties for children to use in the future. Investors remain attracted to Buy-to-Let properties due to the prospect of good capital growth. In light of the change to mortgage interest tax relief being capped at 20 per cent, however, to be phased in from April 2017, many investors who purchase using debt are becoming far more focused on potential yields. Investors with larger budgets looking to invest in Prime London residential markets are considering spreading their capital across
multiple units of lower value, as opposed to purchasing one property for the combined value. This can help reduce your stamp duty liability. Reducing your void period is also critical. I’d advise landlords to ensure your property is well presented on viewings to attract tenants quickly. If possible, try to market it between exchange and completion, to hopefully arrange a move in as soon as possible after the property completes. The more you can reduce the period during which the property sits empty and earning no money, the better. This is particularly relevant when purchasing a new home as a Buy-to-Let. With a significant pipeline of new build stock coming to the rental market, prospective tenants have a large variety to choose from, so make sure your apartment stands out from the crowd. A well dressed property is crucial to maximise the rental value, as you may be competing with other investors who have purchased very similar apartments in the same development. You can offset some of the costs incurred against tax. Speak to an accountant to ensure you pay the correct amount of tax and, in some cases, if a different ownership structure might be more suited to your circumstances. Similarly, if your portfolio is geared (purchased using debt), make sure you have the right mortgage product and be prepared to shop around.

Uncertainty over Bre it set to slow the housing market A recent survey undertaken by a London based removal company has suggested many Londoners are putting their decision to buy or sell a home in the Capital on hold until after the referendum in June. Lack of supply has been a consistent in the London housing market for several years now and this issue is further exacerbating matters. This leaves the UK in the same situation as Scotland was just prior to the independence referendum of 2014. During this period, Scotland experienced a significant slump in the volume of property purchase transactions. While much speculation surrounds the issue of what would happen to house prices should the UK exit the European Union, it is impossible to be certain. London’s housing market would likely be most affected by an exit as it is as much an international investment market as a domestic housing market. The one major benefactor of the current political uncertainty will be the private rental sector. The next few months will likely

see a spike in demand for short and medium term rental property in the capital. Whenever significant policy decisions are on the horizon, demand for rental property jumps. It is a trend we noticed last year in the run up to the general election. Landlords with available property will benefit from a plentiful supply of prospective tenants. This will likely result in an increase in prices for London rental property. The spring market is typically a busy time for the rental market in any event and this year I suspect will be no exception. With so many significant policy decisions in the UK over the last few years (general election, EU referendum, independence referendum etc) the sales market has ebbed and flowed. Hopefully once the result of the EU referendum has been confirmed we will have a protracted period of stability. The next few months will be interesting times for the London property market. Not only due to the forthcoming referendum but also the wider global economy. Interesting times ahead‌

Spring is in the air, kicking off the busiest time of the year for a gardener. As the days begin to get warmer the weeds will usually be the first thing to burst through and my best advice to manage them successfully throughout the year is to get an early start. The easiest way to remove them is to moisten the soil and pull out by hand – making sure you get right underneath and pull the root out too or it will just grow straight back. Little and often makes the job easier to maintain. April is an excellent month to focus on lawn care. If you have laid grass seed or turf it must be kept watered daily so if the English weather doesn’t provide the rain expected you will need to do it manually. Don’t let it dry out between watering and the next bout of showers! With our increasingly wet winters and summers it is also very important to aerate your lawn in April which gives established grass more air and growing space and helps it to drain excess water away
more efficiently. Easiest results are achieved with a lawn aerator machine or if you haven’t got space to get this in then a manual hollow tine aerator will do. Happily the hard work of preparing your garden for the productive months ahead is softened by the beautiful displays of bulbs that will start popping up about now, like the daffodils and hyacinths. The bright colours and delicious scents remind us of the rewards of gardening and as the days get steadily warmer it gets more and more enjoyable. Pansies and primroses are a good choice for an instant splash of early spring colour in the garden; they are pretty hardy and will survive the cooler nights. Their bright colours are wonderful interspersed in clumps through the spring bulbs and if you keep dead heading they should keep going until the warmer summer months. Finally don’t forget to sterilise your pots and trays ready for sowing seeds in a month or so.

JLL RESIDENTIAL
Developing Your Next Investment
with James Plumley Residential Development Sales Manager, JLL At the start of the year, JLL predicted that 2016 would provide a sound base for home owners, buyers, renters, and landlords, with anticipated house price growth of 5 and transaction volumes rising to 1.28m. However, while the UK economy is one of the safest and strongest in the world, the London property market may feel the effects of the unrest of overseas economies, but here in the City & East, the mainstream housing market has had a great first quarter. Buyer enquiry levels are higher than they ever have been and, whilst there is a firm eye on April 1st, the off plan investment sector has seen clients from around the world continue to choose London as a safe place to invest their money. Investors are particularly active in the £750,000-£1.5m price bracket where the 3 additional stamp duty on buy-to-let properties coming into effect in April isn’t too onerous. Rental values are also increasing year on year with high demand being met with short supply. The developers who have chosen The City & East to redevelop have done so with a huge amount of thought; the all round quality of living in the area will be mind blowing and the growing popularity of the area is signified by the number of new developments which have launched already this year, with many more in the pipeline. Until now, what we have lacked, especially in the East, is choice, but not only do we now have developments with high specification apartments but also a range of onsite facilities to take the
day’s stresses away, from hotel like spa’s, club lounges on high floors, cinemas, 24 hour concierge, gymnasiums, and some also have lovely outdoor spaces to enjoy. We are seeing a continued interest in these quality developments with those offering residents an easy commute to work in Canary Wharf and the City being the most popular. We are instructed on over 75 different developments from £350,000 to £50,000,000 all over London, available now and launching over the next few months. I take the time to understand the clients, how to structure the purchase and what they want to achieve from their investment then help them to secure the correct option. I would be delighted to discuss your requirements, please feel free to contact me anytime on my details below.
