Virgin London Marathon 22 April

More than just a race, the London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising event in the world, with 35,000 runners creating an amazing atmosphere. Currently sponsored by Virgin Money and referred to as the Virgin Money London Marathon, the race is held every spring in London. This year sees the 38th Marathon take place on 22 April 2018. Founded by former Olympic champion and journalist Chris Brasher and Welsh athlete John Disley, the race, a distance of 42.195km (26 miles and 385 yards), is set over a largely flat course around the River Thames, beginning at three separate points around Blackheath and finishing in The Mall alongside St. James’s Park. Since the first marathon back in 1981, the course has undergone very few route changes. In 1982, the finishing post was moved from Constitution Hill to Westminster Bridge due to construction works and remained there for twelve years before moving to its present location at The Mall. The event is one of the five top world marathons that make up the World Marathon Majors competition and has raised over £770 million for charity since 1981. Other World Marathon Majors include Berlin, Boston, Chicago and New York City. While it is a serious athletic event, with a large sum of prize money attracting elite athletes, public perception of the race is mainly dominated by club and fun runners. A wide range of weird and wonderful fancy dress outfits can be seen in the name of charity and more than 75 per cent of the 37,000+ runners on

Sunday 22 April will be raising money for charity. Also contributing to the charity raising are a number of wellknown faces who take to the streets to help a wide variety of welldeserving charities such as Cancer Research, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, British Heart Foundation, Kidney Research UK and many, many more. This year is set to be no different with a host of names from both the sporting and entertainment world taking part. Making the event even more notable will be The Queen, who will be the official starter for the 2018 London Marathon. The Queen will step onto a special podium in front of the Round Tower in the grounds of Windsor Castle to push the start button at 10:00 am. BBC Sport will relay live coverage of the start ceremony to the big screens at Blackheath to set off 40,000 runners on the famous 26.2 miles from Blackheath to The Mall. “We are deeply honoured that Her Majesty The Queen has accepted the invitation to start the 2018 London Marathon,” said Sir John Spurling, Chairman of London Marathon Events Ltd, organisers of the race. “Especially as this will happen 110 years after the 1908 Olympic Marathon was started at Windsor Castle by the then Princess Mary, grandmother to The Queen.” An interactive map, giving details of the best locations to watch the marathon, is available on the Virgin Money London Marathon website, along with other important spectator and runner information.

Bronzed Basel Beauties Kerbedanz Maximus Ultra-Precision As the world’s largest tourbillon, the Kerbedanz Maximus creates the buzz. The 49 mm watch, with its 27 mm tourbillon cage, is a marvel of precision and a tribute to the watchmaker’s art. When scaling the movement to its outsized proportion, the master watchmakers at Kerbedanz had to make their calculations from scratch to ensure that the movement’s reliability and stability was not only preserved but improved upon. In addition to the accuracy ensured by the tourbillon itself, an 18k gold flyweight was added to fine-tune the balance of the cage. The use of titanium keeps the tourbillon cage lightweight, ensuring that despite its size, it can rotate without losing precision. It also protects the escapement from magnetic fields. A fixed balance-spring stud prevents any changes in position due to shocks, further ensuring precision, and the balance wheel can be finely adjusted. The tourbillon carriage, made of 73 components, rotates once every 6 minutes instead of the conventional 60 seconds. kerbedanz.com

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Moon Black Enamel Jaquet Droz’s flagship Grande Seconde collection contains the most poetic of complications, the moon phase, as a tribute to the role of astral phenomena in the origins of watchmaking. The clean aesthetic of the Grande Seconde collection, with its figure-8 dial configuration, is rendered here in black Grand Feu enamel. The lower subsidiary dial is dominated by a realistic moon, engraved out of 22K gold and mounted on a black onyx disk that rotates. It is an astronomical moonphase, which means it requires correction only once every 122 years, and is driven by an in-house automatic calibre with a silicon balance spring. A red-tipped hand indicates the date on an 18K gold ring surrounding the moon phase, while another hand indicates seconds. The moon phase can be set using the corrector at 8 o’clock. The 43 mm case is 18k red gold. jaquet-droz.com

Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique The inventor of the tourbillon regulator is introducing its Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique in a “Grand Feu enamel version. This new Classique Grandes Complications 5637 provides a beautifully simple interpretation of the tourbillon, which reigns supreme on a minimalist dial. Pared-down to its bare essentials, the unmistakable sheen of grand feu enamel is adorned only by the essentials: hour and minute hands, a tourbillon carriage with small seconds and Breguet numerals. Unlike the previous Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat, introduced in 2013, there is no power reserve indicator on this new edition. The hand-bevelled tourbillon bar is dopped by a blue spinel, matching the blued steel Breguet hands. The in-house movement, Caliber 581, features a patented high-energy barrel to maximize energy retention. breguet.com

Breitling Navitimer 8 B01

Carl F. Bucherer Manero Tourbillon Double Peripheral

Breitling, famous for its chronographs and its strong link to aviation, has just launched a new pilot’s watch collection: the Navitimer 8. The 8 in its name is a nod to the Huit Aviation Department, which was set up in 1938 to produce cockpit instruments as well as classic pilot’s watches for civilian and military use. At the time, Willy Breitling chose the name “Huit,” the French word for “eight,” as a reference to the eight-day power reserve offered by its storied cockpit instruments. As a highlight of our new watch line, the Navitimer 8 B01 is presented in stainless steel as well as in 18k red gold, each with the exclusive Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01. With those two versions, the manufactory meets all the demands of discerning watch bearers.

The tourbillon calibre CFB T3000 is a world premiere, and represents a continuation of Carl F. Bucherer’s pioneering role in the development of peripheral technology. The new movement, created entirely in-house, with a patent for the peripheral winding mechanism and a pending patent for the tourbillon, combines a peripheral rotor with a peripherally mounted tourbillon mechanism that seems to float freely. The carriage, rather than rotating on a centre ruby bearing, is supported peripherally by three ceramic ball bearings, allowing the tourbillon to be admired without obstruction from both front and back. Carl F. Bucherer’s patented peripheral unidirectional rotor allows for a completely open view of the movement through the sapphire caseback. Calibre T3000, with silicon components and a stop-seconds function, is one of the few tourbillon movements on the market to be officially COSC chronometer-rated.

Zenith Defy Zero G The Defy collection is the embodiment of Zenith’s horological complexity, including the iconic high-frequency Defy El Primero 21 and the Defy Lab, the world’s most accurate mechanical watch thanks to its monocrystalline silicon oscillator. This year, the Defy appears as a full collection, including the Defy Zero G, with gyroscopic “Gravity Control.” The device, fitted here into a skeletonized version of Zenith’s high-frequency El Primero calibre, cancels the effects of gravity by maintaining the regulating organ and balance in a horizontal position. The spherical system is composed of 139 tiny components, which have been redesigned to reduce the module’s dimensions by 70%. This enables it to fit between the two flat sapphire crystals of the Defy case. The 44 mm case is brushed titanium.

Doctor Jonquille As well as a pioneer in the aesthetic industry, Doctor Jonquille Chantry is known as the female face in the field of cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery. She has more than fourteen years of experience and is one of the most influential, well known and very well-respected doctors in the UK. She is also a global lecturer and teaches other doctors and surgeons worldwide to promote exceptional practice and pioneering techniques in aesthetic treatments and surgical transformations. Dr Jonquille is the silent name behind the expert training of many of the cosmetic and aesthetic doctors whose names are well known today and with her pride and passion for her work, she is the media’s ‘go to’ expert in cosmetic surgery, anti-ageing and scarring. After studying for many years and gaining extensive international experience, she has published well-known articles, papers and

studies which have impacted on the industry as it stands today and with her ever-increasing knowledge, is always ahead of the game. She has featured in many well respected glossy, luxury magazines and has appeared in television programmes such as Embarrassing Bodies and Jeremy Kyle’s Morning Surgery as well as performing surgery in front of a live audience in a teaching capacity. Specialising in aesthetic medical procedures to enhance and rejuvenate the face and body Dr. Jonquille established her renowned clinic ‘Expert Aesthetics’ in the heart of leafy Alderley Edge, Cheshire in 2011 and has many celebrity and international clients. However, she has also brought her expertise to London where she operates in several House of Beauty and hosts regular press events as well as giving talks to consumers. She journeys regularly every month for this specific purpose.

Doctor Jonquille Chantry, Expert Aesthetics | 01625 585990 | info@drjonquille.co.uk | drjonquille.co.uk

Dr. Jonquille has numerous qualifications. She is a trained surgeon and has achieved a research degree in psychiatry and including a specialist interest in psychology, she can understand each individual patient’s needs on a more personal level. Armed with this knowledge and with her focus on improving both the physical and mental well-being of her patients, she truly believes that the best natural outcomes can now be achieved using non-surgical methods which in turn minimises scarring and post treatment downtime. She aims to ensure beautiful, natural results to build and strengthen long-term self-esteem.

One of the many procedures she has to offer using safe, noninvasive methods is a technique known as a Fluid (or liquid) Facelift which she was instrumental in researching and for which she has gained international recognition amongst her peers. This involves full rejuvenation of the face and jaw-line using one of the many injectable products available known as Juvederm Voluma. Creating a customised treatment tailored to each client’s specific needs, hyaluronic acid is the key ingredient in the syringe and when injected into specific points of concern such as the cheeks, jowls and under eyes, effects similar to a surgical facelift can be achieved without the complications of invasive and expensive surgery. Hyaluronic acid is a common type of natural facial filler which reduces the signs of ageing by combining with the water in your skin and adding moisture deep within the layers where it is has been lost giving back a more youthful elasticity. Natural hyaluronic acid is lost as we age and this causes wrinkles to form and the face to lose definition and droop and change its contour. To keep everything balanced and natural-looking, Dr. Jonquille treats the face as a ‘whole’ and once the skin is numb, she administers tiny doses of hyaluronic acid to perfectly enhance and subtly balance the facial features. The most you will feel is a tiny pin prick and Dr. Jonquille’s skills as an advanced injector become obvious. In keeping with her beliefs of using minimal product for maximum results, these doses of acid contour and strobe the targeted areas as required. When administered around the eye and cheek area it balances the face by lifting the jawline and ensures a flawless complexion with natural, fresh results. Furthermore, by massaging the injections under your skin, volume is restored to your cheeks leaving your face looking fuller and the entire lower half appears to be lifted, the chin is more defined, and the jawline is smoother. The results are immediate and takes less than an hour after your consultation. The effects are subtle and natural and as there is no downtime. A slight bruising or swelling and a little redness around the treated areas may occur but it would take an eagle eye to detect and you can even return to work afterwards. You may experience some tenderness, but this is only temporary and will be gone in a few days. There is no doubt that this result driven, revolutionary treatment creates dramatically visible results restoring beauty and youth leaving you with a slimmer, more youthful, radiant and luminous complexion which makes you feel fabulous and truly impressed at the result. Fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed away leaving the skin much tighter and facial contours are far more even-toned and ultimately improves the way you feel about yourself and contributes to you entire well-being. Ideal for both men and women, Juvederm Voluma used in the Fluid Facelift has been proven to last up to one year depending on each individual and as all ingredients are bio degradable, it will disperse into your skin without leaving any damage.

Pre treatment may be required. Prices start from £450.00

Exploring the Untouched Irrawaddy Burma has spent a considerable amount of time closed off from the rest of the world. For much of the duration of the military dictatorship that ruled from 1962 to 2011, and even now, many of the remote areas are populated by people who have had little or no contact with foreigners. Today more accessible than ever, Myanmar is quickly opening up to the opportunities of the world around it. With international air routes linking Yangon (formerly Rangoon) and Mandalay (the country’s second largest city and ancient capital) to Bangkok, Singapore and

Kuala Lumpur, there has never been a better time to visit. Little has changed in the years gone by, however the potential for much growth in the next ten years is here. The nearby neighbours of China, India, Malaysia and Thailand have been making the most of Myanmar’s land for some time now and this only looks set to grow with China building a vast number of properties in Mandalay making the most of the cheap land prices. The landscape is changing and it’s worth heading out as soon as possible to see the untouched, magical scenery of pagodas and stupas while you still can.

Myanmar is a land of rivers. Not only is it home to the Irrawaddy river, navigable for 1000 miles, or its main tributary the Chindwin river, navigable for 600 miles, but other rivers too including the longest, the Salween river. The Kaladan system in the Arakan also runs over 450km from the eastern Mizoram State of India through Myanmar to the Rakhine State before continuing south to Sittwe where it enters the Bay of Bengal. It offers the fifth largest river in the world that remains undisturbed by dams. However, the Great Irrawaddy Delta, with its seven main channels and several hundred lesser ones, is a vast water-world covering over 10,000 square miles and is the best way to enjoy this incredible country. In Myanmar for over one thousand years, nearly all movement of people and goods, not to mention invaders, have traveled by river. In British colonial times the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company launched 1,200 vessels and became the largest fleet of privately owned ships in the world. Still to this day, despite the construction of railways in colonial times and more recently, roads, the rivers remain key to transportation and the best and easiest way for travelers to see the country. Incredibly wide, the Irrawaddy also bears a massive spiritual significance to the mostly Buddhist nation. Remote villages and towns alike rely on the government protected water for washing and drinking, making the water much better quality of that in China and India as it isn’t as heavily polluted. June to November is classed as the wet season, where the many river islands flood with water rising to up to 25 feet forcing villagers out of their homes. From November to April, the dry season commences, and communities live on the many sandbanks in temporary bamboo houses, often fishing in the early morning to make a living. Further up the river in the north near the second

defile, communities use the dry season to collect and sell wood, such as teak and rosewood, to local pottery makers who use it for their kilns. Pottery making is one of the many trades in Myanmar. Selling large 50-gallon handmade water pots for a mere $15 dollars it’s a wonder the pottery makers in Kyauk-Myoung make any money. We picked up a pretty floral terracotta style pot for 1000 Myanmar Kyat which is about 53p. Due to the lack of tourist trade, there is very little to buy apart from food or tea from one of the many local tea shops villagers like to while away the day at. That said, the country is famed for gems and gold and you will get the opportunity on the trip to visit a jewellery store in Mandalay

should you wish to take something special home. While the Mogok ruby supply is beginning to dwindle, the country is still an unmined treasure for diamonds, and you will find a vast array of jade, amber and sparkling sapphires to admire. During your Pandaw trip you can expect to see a number of fascinating and historic sites along the Irrawaddy. Highlights include Bagaya Kyaung, a 200-year-old royal monastery made of teak with elaborate woodcarvings; the Mingun Bell, the largest working bell in the world the unfinished pagoda that is the largest single mass of brick building in the world; and ancient city of Tagaung, where you can enjoy a fantastic view across the Irrawaddy from the top of Pagoda Hill.

MYANMAR

Pagan is one of the richest archaeological sites in the world and the highlight of every tour through Myanmar. In between 11th and 13th century the kings of Pagan dynasty ruled the country and ordered thousands of pagodas and temples to be built. There are about 20 temples and hundreds of pagodas to be seen here, many boasting intricate ornate styles. Another place of significant interest on the Pagan and Upper Irrawaddy cruise is the colonial town of Katha, the famous setting for George Orwell’s Burmese Days. Little has changed since the book was written and you can visit many of the locations referenced in the book. Katha is also notable as the final resting place of the old flotilla and here, over a hundred ships were scuppered in 1942 in an Act of Denial before the advancing Japanese. Today, the local fire station has several the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company’s ship’s bells on display that were taken from sunken ships in the Second War. Sightseeing in Myanmar is unlikely any other tourist site excursion you may have done before. There are little in the way of rules, apart from taking off your shoes at sacred locations. There’s no red tape and you can really get up close and personal with the ornate carvings and structures to see the detail, unlike the many barriers that keep us from doing so here. The Burmese are working to preserve their monuments but as with everything, this takes time and its incredible to see so many crumbling stupas next to other glistening gold relics. myanmar.travel

TRAVEL Offering cruises in Burma, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Laos and China, The Pandaw experience is all about exploring remote and often hard-to-navigate rivers and coasts in specially-designed luxury small ships. The original company, known as the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company, founded in 1865, was acquired by Paul and Roser Strachan in 1995. Renamed Pandaw, following the discovery and acquisition of this last remaining Clyde-built steamer, the company has gone from strength to strength, expanding with many new routes outside of its original home of Burma. Pandaw brought its unique concept and style to expeditions along the Mekong River through Indochina in 2003 and pioneered the first routes on both the Red River in Northern Vietnam and the Upper Mekong through Laos into China in 2015. Each ship is hand-crafted in brass and teak, and a Pandaw adventure is very different from that offered on an ocean-going cruise. The ships are small scale and because of that, the atmosphere is informal but very friendly. While the craft may be small, Pandaw boasts the highest passenger-to-deck- space ratio of any cruise ships afloat. The 360-degree promenade decks allow for plenty of quiet spots to be discovered where you can read a book or write your travel journal. Due to the intimate atmosphere you will soon find that you have made firm friends with the other like-minded passengers and can often enjoy catching up on your adventures while looking out at the spectacular passing landscape. It’s this freedom and informality that makes these trips perfect for couples or solo travellers alike. When it comes to dining, passengers are welcome to eat on their own or with family and friends. They can do so either in the indoor salon area or on deck. Most dietary requirements are catered for, and if you inform before your trip Pandaw do their very best to accommodate you. The allinclusive policy ensures that there are no hidden extras for excursions and crew gratuities are also included in this, as well as most drinks apart from luxury beverages such as imported wines and so on.

MYANMAR There are a number of social events during an expedition which include a welcome dinner, cocktail parties on deck, a farewell gala dinner and dinners themed with local menus and costume. All are informal dress and ensure fun for everyone. The crew on board will often make the most of the dry season and try to tie up on a sandbank for a relaxed barbeque beach party on the sands. Each of the cruises are family friendly and also offer activities for all ages and abilities, allowing you to make your trip as relaxing or as challenging as you wish. Mountain biking and hiking are all available as well as exciting excursions to local villages where children can gain valuable insight to other lifestyles around the globe. Just imagine making your own discoveries by bike though the pagodas and temples of Pagan or exploring the scenic Burmese countryside and friendly villages at your own pace. While passengers are free to do their own thing onshore, transportation, sometimes in the form of a horse and cart or trishaw, is provided for those who prefer a led excursion in the capable hands of expert guides – perfect if you are unsure of going alone. All scheduled excursions are accompanied by members of the crew with first aid kits, water and cold towels. Passengers are also offered the chance to visit Pandaw Charity projects to see the work and progress that donations have made, as well as interact with the local communities the projects help. Foodie fans will enjoy the opportunity to travel to local markets with the Pandaw Head Chef at least once during the cruise programme to scope out the best ingredients on offer.

Our Boat This ten cabin K class was completed in 2016 and is currently serving as the Pandaw Academy training ship at Pagan. Like so many of Pandaw’s K class ships the Khabyoo was named after the Denny built ship launched in 1882 and sunk in 1025. The story goes that in the year of her launch under a Captain Clasin, Denny was trapped in a whirlpool in the Middle Defile and went round and round for three days and three nights. During this time Captain Clasin’s hair turned completely white before she ultimately sank. Pandaw wholeheartedly believes in giving back to the local community. Paul Strachan, Founder & CEO, established the Pandaw charity in 2008 to support education and healthcare efforts in Burma, something that many of the remote villages really rely on. The charity is entirely sponsored by a profit share of revenue and donations from Pandaw passengers. Another of the many initiatives Pandaw has taken to further give back is by taking on interns from local villages and offering them valuable training in hotel skills to not only allow them to flourish and help provide for their families but also a step up the career ladder. The ship has quality mountain bikes for independent exploration and individual routes can be provided for those looking to head out.

The Staterooms The Pandaw stateroom is the most celebrated feature of the ships, combining splendid colonial-era character with superb contemporary comfort. Finished in brass and teak, the main and upper deck rooms are a spacious 168 square feet (15.6 sqm). Although the ships differ slightly, the staterooms are mainly the same in each. It’s worth noting the cabins do not have mini-bars, satellite TV’s, internet access or telephones, however that’s not why you are going. Most passengers find themselves outside enjoying the views or off-ship

exploring the land, as after all this is a once in a life time experience not a business trip. All of the cabins are the same size and all contain Pandaw’s signature amenities. Passengers can choose from the Main Deck or Upper Deck and unlike big ocean liners, every window on board (except for the portholes on the lower deck) can be opened and closed to suit your comfort. Amenities include fresh fruit and flowers on arrival, Kimonos and slippers, Spa-branded amenities, Unlimited mineral water and Free use of mini DVD player on request and selection of DVDs from the ship’s library.

Prices for Pandaw’s 10-night ‘Pagan And The Upper Irrawaddy’ cruise start from US$3,780 per person, based on two sharing. This includes 10 nights on RV Kha Byoo Pandaw, meals, some drinks, transfers, excursions, entrance fees, guide services, gratuities to crew. International flights are additional. TokimeitE Based in Mayfair, and not far from the busy shopping areas of Regent Street and Oxford Street, Tokimeitē is brought to you by world famous Michelin starred Chef Yoshihiro Murata, who holds a total of seven Michelin stars across his three restaurants in Kyoto and Tokyo, and ZeN-Noh, the Japanese agriculture cooperative. Headed up by Executive Chef Daisuke Hayashi, the restaurant’s aim is to bring the spirit of Japan to diners creating the ultimate, authentic dining experience. As one of London’s few authentic Japanese Washoku traditional cuisine - restaurant, Tokimeitē specialises in Kaiseki, one of the most refined forms of Washoku, adding subtle European twists to create an array of innovative dishes in a luxurious setting. The 70-cover restaurant, has been set over three floors and is designed to celebrate elements from Japanese seasons, shrines and temples. Fire is well represented on the ground floor with an open kitchen showcasing a robata grill and Josper charcoal oven. Taking its name from a colloquial Japanese expression describing a sense of anticipation or ‘butterflies’, dishes at the restaurant are a work of art with delectable sushi and sashimi prepared lovingly at the open bar garnished with edible flowers

and wonderfully fresh. Highlights include the Sashimi Goshu with five types of assorted Sashimi and the Hida Gyu Tartare Truffle Maki with melt in the mouth Hida Wagyu tartare and truffle oil. Wagyu is a prime feature of the menu and is imported by ZeN-Noh. Bred and reared in Japan, the cattle is fed a highly specialised diet and the results are a tender, superior beef which truly makes the dish. This, blended with the traditional techniques make Tokimeitē a stand out spot for truly delicious and authentic Japanese cuisine. Menu highlights include Scottish langoustine tempura; Lobster Karasumiyaki Truffle Yaki, char-grilled lobster with bottarga and truffle sauce; and of course the many premium Wagyu dishes. From the bar, an extensive range of premium sakes, shochu, whiskies and cocktails are available to complement the cuisine. The exotic selection of cocktails features aromatic and unusual ingredients such as umeshu plum liqueur, Kyoto Sansho pepper, Oolong tea and various herbal bitters. The menu also features several types of hot cold and sparkling sakes by the glass, carafe and bottle; and a large array of Japanese beers and a comprehensive wine list.

Asia de Cuba

REVIEW After celebrating its 18th birthday last year, iconic St Martin’s Lane eatery, Asia de Cuba, continues to bring its tropical fusion of Latin and Asian ingredients, techniques and flavours to Covent Garden. Welcoming with a warm atmosphere, the innovative new menu celebrates some of the restaurant’s long-standing classics with innovative new dishes. The newly renovated restaurant is colourful and fun with a whimsical feel from the mismatched chairs and brightly coloured posters and endless picture frames on the walls. Consisting of five main sections: ceviches, small plates, salads, wok and plancha, the menu is perfect for sharing between friends and even better, washed down with one of the many hand-crafted cocktails that take inspiration from the tropical nature of the food. Headed up by Chef Pous, who grew up and trained as a chef in Cuba, the new menu represents Chef Pous’ interpretation of what Asian-influenced Cuban food would have been today if Cubans had been able to innovate and evolve their cuisine over the past 50 years, when they did not have access to the range of global ingredients which had been available to the rest of the world. The results are spectacular with highlight dishes including Tunapica Tartarte, crispy wonton, spanish olives, currants, toasted coconut, almonds, avocado ceviche; Ropa Vieja Spring Rolls, slowbraised short rib, rocoto sweet and sour; Roasted Duck Salad with napa cabbage, baby sorrel and spicy vinaigrette; and Coffee-crusted Ribeye. There are plenty of meat and fish options on the extensive menu, which also offers Pre-Theatre Bento Boxes, however the many fresh fish dishes do seem to stand out more than the rest. The Rocoto-Glazed Black Cod with orange mojo and avocado poblano puree, and red snapper ceviche are wonderfully fresh and vibrant. The dishes appear light but are incredibly tasty and filling, enhancing and complimenting the many cocktails on the drinks menu. In fact, the new drinks menu has been created in collaboration with the Havana Club especially with this in mind, pairing Asia de Cuba’s Signature Ceviches with new Cocktails, designed to evoke a sense of old Havana. Freshly prepared sugarcane juice has been a staple of Cuban life for decades as it is known for being a natural immunity booster & infection fighter, as well as providing an instant kick of energy & quenching thirst. The vibrant zing hits the spot while the cool, fresh ceviche further plays with your sense of sight, smell and taste. Our favourite cocktails include Floradora on Holiday - aviation gin, hibiscus, lime, soda water and fresh ginger soda; and the Cantaloupe Pisco Sour - pisco aba, cantaloupe melon and lemon. 45 St Martin’s Lane, London WC2N 4HX | 020 7300 5588 | asiadecuba.com

COCKTAIL COLUMN

Calabrese’s Cocktails with Gerry Calabrese

East End drinks maverick Gerry Calabrese has built a reputation as one of the greats in London’s bar scene. From bartending in top London venues such as Lab, Dust, and Sex in the City he went on in 2008 to launch his own multi award winning East End bar, The Hoxton Pony followed by most recently in 2016 Wringer and Mangle situated in the neighbouring London Fields, to much critical acclaim. His pedigree has also seen him act as a drinks columnist as well as consultant and event planner for numerous high profile private clients including Giles Deacon, Swarovski, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Channel 4, and Mulberry.

Not long ago, if you walked into a bar and asked the bar keep for a Pink Gin, you would undoubtedly be served some variation of gin and bitters in a glass, sometimes with ice water or sometimes with tonic, but the world understood it as a very simple yet delicious cocktail. Today however, you would receive something a little different. We’ve seen a continuing rise of craft spirits over the past decade, with an explosion in popularity in the last five years, especially within the ever expanding category of gin, and it seems the next big expression of the spirit to break through is Pink Gin. Already accounting for over six percent of all gin sales in the UK, Pink Gin is set to continue to grow as producers from all over the world are starting to produce there own varieties, usually with the inclusion of berries such as blackberries or raspberries. This month, my very own expression of Hoxton Pink is hitting the shelves, a premium gin created using only naturally and ethically sourced botanicals - we start with a hefty serving of Juniper, the most important of all which is where the dryness of all gin comes from, we follow that up with an unusual botanical - Gunpowder Tea, a Chinese tea where the leaves have withered before being steamed, rolled up and then finally dried. The rolling of the leaves allows them to retain more flavour and aroma, resulting in a much punchier flavour profile. Next up is Bergamot, a sour orange that is closer to the lemon, which is where the unique flavour of Earl Grey comes from. We’ve also included Camomile noted for it’s calming qualities, offers a subtle hint of green apple with a touch of cinnamon. Elderflower, with its creamy blooms brings a floral taste of summer paired with Liquorice which aides in binding all the flavours together while adding a lovely earthy sweetness. Our citrus comes from pink grapefruit, which adds a little zest to

help cut through all the other flavours and we finish it all off with the addition of Rose Hip and Hibiscus Sugar. The Rose Hip is often used for its medicinal value, brings a tangy, tart flavour to Hoxton Pink and is beautifully paired with our Hibiscus Sugar. They both offer some rich floral flavours as well as our unique pink hue. The Hibiscus flower is lemony-tart with berry-leaning floral notes, both on the palate and on the nose. The unique combination of our choice botanicals deliver a beautiful, flavoursome gin that works wonderfully in a variety of drinks, both spirits mixers and cocktails. I suggest a simple serve of Hoxton Pink with Indian Tonic water and a wedge of pink grapefruit as a go-to drink or maybe create a twist on a classic using Hoxton Pink of you’re feeling a little fancy. One of my favourites is a twist on the Clover Club. The future is bright, the future is Pink.

ROUX at parliament square Namesake of famed Michelin star celebrity chef Michel Roux Jr., Roux at Parliament Square received a welcome refurbishment towards the end of last year and has once again found its way into the Michelin Guide. Achieving Michelin Plate status along with sister restaurant; Roux at The Landau, the restaurant offers a more accessible way of enjoying Roux's culinary marvels than two Michelin starred Le Gavroche that can be considerably harder to book and not so kind on your wallet. Numerous rooms adorned with political, architectural and culinary artworks provide intimate spaces in which to enjoy your meal. Delivering a fantastic atmosphere with the perfect level of ambient noise thanks to the reserved number of covers allocated per room, this is a sophisticated dining room with contemporary design that combines period features and modern furnishings. Taking traditional cuisine and putting a distinct, modern twist in both presentation and flavour with the finest seasonal produce, the menu is exciting and delicious. Dishes such as the veal sweetbreads and the pork cheek starter are executed to perfection and delivered in stunning fashion while the rest of the menu continues on the same theme.

With A La Carte, Set and Tasting menus available, there are plenty of options to find your perfect meal. Headed up by Steve Groves, previous winner of Masterchef The Professionals and more recently awarded Chef of the Year at the Foodservice Catey’s 2017, the kitchen is in very good hands. Taking note from Michel Roux, Groves continues to impress with unique, modern dishes that are regularly updated. Every plate presented before you is worthy of an art award, but you won't be able to resist demolishing the whole thing when you smell the rich aromas rising from the dish. Wine is an essential part of any good meal and Roux at Parliament Square does not disappoint. An extensive wine list is available for you to peruse at your own pace, however, the sommelier is on hand to help and will tailor a selection of pairings to suit your chosen dishes. If you opt for the tasting menu, there is an option to take wine pairings with each course and every partnership has been expertly selected to support and enhance the flavours in the dish. Not only ideal for quiet business lunches, but perfect for a romantic evening meal, this is a tranquil fine dining spot in the heart of Westminster that delivers in every aspect. Excellent food, a fantastic supporting wine list and attentive, knowledgeable staff all combine in this cosy yet sleek restaurant.

The Savoy

AFTERNOON TEA

Afternoon Tea

Located under a spectacular glass domed atrium at the heart of The Savoy, the Thames Foyer is the perfect location for a spot of Afternoon Tea. Sparkling with natural light emitting a radiant glow around the room, you’re certainly in for a treat on any special occasion. Afternoon Tea has been enjoyed at the hotel for over 125 years, beginning first in The Savoy’s ‘Terrace Restaurant’, where young and fashionable Edwardian couples would come to enjoy midafternoon treats. By 1920, afternoon tea was a firm tradition and a permanent dance floor was installed in the Thames Foyer so that guests could enjoy Tango Teas and music from renowned bands. A slightly quieter affair with only the delicate sounds of a talented pianist, today’s tea has been created by The Savoy’s Executive Pastry Chef, Ludwig Hely and starts at £60.00 per person. Boasting traditional Afternoon and High Tea favourites, delicate finger sandwiches include the likes of Coronation Chicken on olive bread; Sliced cucumber and cream cheese with mint on caraway seed bread; and Wiltshire ham with Bromley apple and cider chutney, grain mustard and pickled cucumbers on whole meal bread. Warm homemade scones with Cornish clotted cream, lemon curd and strawberry preserve accompany the sandwiches and are arranged prettily on tiered cake stands with a choice of a range of complimenting teas such as the specially made Savoy Afternoon Tea blend. The menu also offers a range of innovative pastries and signature cakes that are hand crafted each morning ensuring precision and freshness. Indulge in sweets such as Belle Helene – Chantilly Cream with poached pear and a dark chocolate sauce; Passionfruit meringue tart; and Pink Rhubarb with shortbread, vanilla cremeux and rhubarb paste. Guests can select favourites or indeed try them all. Instead of the sweets, savoury fans can opt for the high tea and enjoy a traditional smoked salmon and poached hen egg blini served with hollandaise and fennel oil. A glass of Louis Roederer Brut Premier can be added to either tea for £70pp and Moet & Chandon Rose at £88pp. The beautiful space also plays host to a delectable breakfast and varied all-day dining menu and more recently, the launch of an exciting live jazz programme. Afternoon Tea is served from 1:00pm-5:45pm. The Savoy, Strand, London WC2R 0EZ 020 7836 4343 | fairmont.com/savoy

The Bloomsbury Set Afternoon Tea at Charlotte Street Hotel Charlotte Street Hotel has launched a decadent Afternoon Tea inspired by the experimental and creative ideals of its past neighbours the Bloomsbury Set, a pioneering group of early twentieth century writers, artists and intellectuals. Aptly titled ‘The Bloomsbury Set Afternoon Tea’, the talented team at Charlotte Street Hotel have been inspired by recipes from ‘The Bloomsbury Cookbook – Recipes for Life, Love and Art’ by Jans Ondaantje Rolls, Thames & Hudson, March 2014. Head Chef Bradd Johns has been working through authentic recipes of the time to create a menu packed full of the gang’s favourite tea-time treats. Sandwiches include the classic cucumber, egg and cress and a delicious crab Bloody Mary melba toast inspired by Duncan Grant’s love for the drink. The pastry selection includes Virginia Woolf ’s much-loved Eccles cakes and a superbly light and tangy blackberry mousse opera cake, a recipe which was found in writer, Frances Partridge’s personal collection of papers each one of the treats are sure to satisfy even the sweetest of teeth making this savoury, sweet feast a delight for all. The soda scones are another highlight thanks to their crunchy exteriors and wonderfully fluffy insides. Inspired by the work of the Bloomsbury Set, owner and Design Director Kit Kemp has continued to pay homage throughout Charlotte Street Hotel since it opened in 2000, with a collection of original and commissioned work, making the hotel the perfect setting for Bloomsbury-esque debate and discussion. The afternoon tea can be taken in the hotel’s Drawing Room or Library surrounded by original paintings by Vanessa Bell, Roger Fry, Duncan Grant and Nina Hamnett, or in Oscar’s Bar and Restaurant which features a hand-painted mural by Alexander Hollweg, inspired by the work of Duncan Grant. Charlotte Street Hotel has also been working with local micro-distillery, Bloomsbury, to create an entirely unique gin, which can be served as an Oscar Gimlet made with homemade ginger, thyme and lime cordial. The perfect accompaniment to the tea but of course, you can also opt for a glass of champagne should you wish for fizz. The Bloomsbury Set Afternoon Tea costs £26.00 per person & £39.00 per person to include an Oscar Gimlet. Availability: 3rd April - 18th May | 6th August - 16th September. Harry's Dolce Vita Located in the heart of Knightsbridge, just a stone’s throw from Harrods on Basil Street, Harry’s Dolce Vita serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner to hungry locals and avid shoppers alike. With an extensive Italian wine list and classic cocktails, the glamorous restaurant fuses 1950s and 60s Italian glitz with simply good food, and decadent touches. The interior of the narrow dining room features luxurious Fortuny fabrics, colourful Murano glass, vintage brass fixtures and rich tanned leather banquettes. Fitting artwork adorns the walls celebrating ‘la dolce vita’ and creating a wonderful atmosphere in the room. The menu changes seasonally and Executive Chef Diego Cardoso sources ingredients from specialists in their field, working directly with Italian suppliers and importers. Start with some cicchetti such as moreish Truffle Arancini; and N’duji Flatbread. Harry’s Tagliolini is a must try starter with perfectly cooked gratinated tagliolini pasta mingling with truffle, parmesan and cream. The Insalata Caprese is also a lovely fresh way to start a meal served with vine-ripened tomatoes and fresh basil leaves with Harry’s olive oil. Moving on to mains and one of the restaurant’s signature dishes are their hand-stretched pizzas made from dough that has been slowly proved for 72 hours to maximise flavour and provide a light golden crust. If you don’t fancy that then Harry’s Spaghetti Seafood is a hearty

mix of prawns, squid, clams, mussels, datterini tomatoes garlic, chilli, and parsley and definitely hits the spot. The menu also offers plenty of fresh fish and meat dishes and the Tonno Alla Griglia, chargrilled marinated tuna steak with aubergine, datterini tomato, basil, olive and caper trifolati, is a fantastic choice. Sides include olive oil and parmesan mashed potatoes and homemade maccheroni cheese gratin. If you can manage dessert, then the Milk gelato filled profiteroles with chocolate mousse and warm chocolate sauce are wonderfully warm and indulgent, but you may need to share as the portion is huge! The extensive menu also includes sundaes; cannoli, gelato and sorbets. With unfussy dishes and fantastic flavours, Harry’s Dolce Vita will have you returning again and again.

Chucs Harrods Having launched last month in the new Fine Watch Room of Harrods, Chucs is a welcome addition to the dining scene at the prestigious department store. The third London restaurant for the group, with other branches in Dover Street and Westbourne Grove, the menu specialises in flavours of the Italian Riviera and evoking the essence of yacht life and the Mediterranean Sea. The interior fits well with the luxurious surrounds conjuring thoughts of a relaxed private members club, thanks to the warm wooden panelling, polished brass rails and framed photographs of the Amalfi coastline dotted on the walls. The small and intimate restaurant also boasts an elegant bar area, complete with Italian marble bar top and deep blue leather stools. With dedicated direct street access and late night opening, the menu boasts a number of exclusive ‘created especially for Harrods’ dishes, such as Chucs Chicken Paillard, truffle and tomato vierge, baby rocket and Reggiano; Green Harissa Lamb Chops; and Tagliatelle with Mazzara Red Prawns. Other highlights on the menu include the delicious Lobster and Avocado chopped salad served with crispy bacon; the 12oz Wagyu Rib-Eye, truffle maccheroni cheese pot; and the pan-fried Sea Bream with artichoke, peas and broad beans.

Sides include moreish Zucchini Fritti, steamed broccoli and hand cut chips. Dessert showcases Italian classics with a Chucs twist, such as matcha and ginger pannacotta and amoretti tart, as well as sorbets and gelatos. If you are too full however, the mini chocolate ice cream brought out as a petit four rounds the meal off nicely. Open from breakfast through to dinner, the restaurant is also the perfect pit-stop for a leisurely coffee or even a cocktail or two.

Featuring a whole host of practical and visual features, the pack - only available on new vehicle orders - offers most notably, a reduced overall weight of more than 33kg over the standard 570S Spider and a sportier, louder exhaust note for added pleasure. Inside, customers can choose from six lightweight By McLaren Designer Interior Sport Design themes in Alcantara including carbon fibre race seats which alone offer a 13kg saving.

The stunning Alcantara steering wheel with carbon spokes immediately evokes a track mentality while the McLaren Track Telemetry system is on hand to provide lap times and sector splits along with post-drive analysis and data logging with graphical plots of speed and time deltas. T E S L A M o d e l X Stretching its grasp on the automotive market with numerous new models from small saloons to the upcoming roadster, Tesla are keen to show of just what is capable in a fully electric world. And the results are more than promising. Their take on an SUV brings every aspect to new heights with fully customisable seating arrangements, more space than you could swing a cat at and a sporting side that can rival, well, anyone. This is not simply an all-electric car for the family, its adaptability is truly astounding and then there's the quirky - some might say gimmicky - extras such as the 'falcon wings' which open in spectacular fashion to enjoy too. It is not a small car to say the least, but the design team have done an excellent job in creating something that, although big, remains sleek and efficient. Those doors for example perform in such a way that they provide maximum access to the back seats - an adult can simply walk right in - whilst minimising the space

required to open. Double hinged, the doors fold as they lift to reduce the overall height necessary to open. Furthermore, if you do find yourself in an unusually low ceilinged situation, sensors on the doors will automatically prevent any collision. The sleek 'handles' on the doors are little more than incredibly overdesigned buttons that will automatically open the door to yet again a restricted distance depending on the proximity of the car or wall next to you, making entry into the Model X one of the easiest of any car on the road. Once inside, the space becomes immediately apparent. Dependent on the arrangement you choose - five, six or seven seats - and any extras you wish to include, you can customise this car to perfectly suit your needs. Opting for the five seat layout means a standard 2/3 seating arrangement with an enormous amount of space in the boot - and remember there's more space under the bonnet too - which is ideal for those who like to take their tesla.com

kitchen sink away with them or alternatively you could choose the six seat arrangement which adds a row of two seats into the rear space - whilst maintaining a sizeable boot area - and removes the central seat from the second row. This not only offers more space for passengers, but delivers the largest interior storage capacity of its class with 77 cubic feet available. Options are also available to include a central console between the two centre row seats delivering further storage, drinks holders and arm rest. The space in the Model X is only enhanced by the sweeping windscreen that rises from the bonnet and rolls straight over the front seats providing a 90° vertical viewing window for driver and passenger as well as flooding the interior space with light. This cars simplicity is something that takes getting used to and many won't feel comfortable just yet about not having any fiddly knobs to turn or countless buttons to press, but the design results of something so simple are quite honestly stunning. Clean, uninterrupted lines flow across the dashboard with little more than integrated air vents causing a necessary blemish and then of course, the screen.

TESLA MODEL X A 17-inch screen remains the centre point in the Model X, developing further the successes of the Model S's distinctive interior. With access to navigation, entertainment and every aspect of the car itself, this system is one of the most all encompassing and easiest to use on the road. Working much in the way that you would use an iPad, the innovative and intuitive system is functional, adaptable and most importantly, so simple to use that you might need to sit the kids in the back before they get their hands on it. Everything from safety functions to interior lighting can all be altered through the simple interface and with regular software updates delivered direct to your car over-the-air, you will always have the latest version available. No need to update your mapping software or make sure the Spotify app is updated, it is all done automatically overnight, so you can wake up in the morning to a new car...to some extent at least. This notion of being able to update your car without even leaving your drive has some serious connotations. As long as you have the necessary hardware pre-installed in your car such as sensors, anything that Tesla develops in terms of what you can do with those sensors can automatically be updated to your car. It is essentially like having a continually updated extras list that just arrives in your car one day. For example, with the latest update, the Enhanced Autopilot system received: improved autosteer up to 90 mph; traffic-aware cruise control; summon (Beta); auto lane change; lane departure warning; automatic emergency braking; parallel autopark; perpendicular autopark; blind spot detection; speed assist. Now you tell me how much that would all cost to have updated on your current car. Money is currently what Tesla's success or failure boils down to. As the current electric charging infrastructure in the UK is minimal at best, the usability of electric cars is yet to be fully appreciated. Despite offering a staggering 351 mile range, the restriction is still there in terms of accessibility to charging points across the country, so at present, you are likely to see plenty of these incredible machines in areas such as London, but venture away from those centres and the population will dramatically and rapidly decline. As a result, it is only those with the means to live and work in such areas that can identify with the potential and understand that although there is a large initial outlay in relation to the competition, over time, that cost is more than negated and the benefits begin to outweigh the negative. If you need more convincing on the subject, it would certainly be worth popping to a Tesla 'shop' or dealership and arranging a test drive to experience this monster firsthand. You could opt for the top of the line P100D which delivers a 0-60mph time of just 2.9 seconds, yes, that's correct, 2.9 seconds or alternatively choose the second in line 100D which boasts a time of 4.7 seconds. Not slow by anyones standards and certainly not when you consider just what this car offers. Market leading capacity, over a 300 mile range and a safety feature list that will make you feel like you've been transported to the Google mainframe all combine in a car that is not only beautifully designed, but delivers the best drag coefficient of any SUV, by a factor of 20%. All round, this is a marvel of engineering. Taking their understanding of electric power as a start point and building around it has meant that Tesla have been able to produce an SUV unlike any other on the road, in design, capability, efficiency and of course something that can quite easily be forgotten with such an impressive vehicle, environmental friendliness.

Tesla's Model X is not just about offering an alternative to the SUV market, they are aiming to make this the go-to SUV in the market. Everything is ready and waiting aligned to make this the ultimate success, we just have to hope that the infrastructure improves, quickly, to ensure it makes it there. There are financing options available to potential buyers, but it is still often hard to see the long term benefits when you are faced with such a huge bill. The best thing you can do if you are on the fence about this or any of the other models in the range, is visit your nearest dealership and take a first hand approach. You will not be disappointed by the result, you may be a little light in the pocket for a little while, but those fuel bills, tax costs and engine oil all add up quite quickly if you take the time to count. There's nothing quite like the products Tesla are currently putting out in the market and it's only set to continue.

The New Class CoupĂŠ 1966 BMW 2000 CS Featuring a sleek, modern Karmann coach built body, the BMW 2000 CS was introduced in 1965 following the discontinuation of the Bertone bodied 3200 CS - the last in the line of the V8 powered luxury cars from the 50's. The 'New Class CoupĂŠ' range brought with it a new version of the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine from the saloon with the 2000 CS boasting a twin-carburettor version delivering 120 hp paired with a four speed manual transmission as standard. This car was aimed at replacing the flagship 3200 CS and was to later evolve into the BMW E9 of the late 60's. It's unique styling is such that it splits opinion in the BMW world, however there is no mistaking the cars identity. The twin chrome 'kidney' grilles positioned front and centre offer an instantly recognisable feature whilst the remaining simple characteristics offer little in the way of identity. As a result of the minimalist front grille, additional air intakes were required to aid in engine cooling, hence the vertical slots hidden behind the front bumper. This was an effective way of ensuring sufficient air was passing to the engine while managing to maintain the clean styling of the car. The theme continues across the bodywork with a single feature line running the length and around the entire car incorporating the bootline seamlessly. Sleek rear light clusters integrate with the number plate to create yet again, more clean lines and keep the aesthetic simple and modern.

Finished in silver coachwork with an equally sleek black leather interior, this is a fantastic left-hand drive example. This near pristine 2000 CS has however received an extensive full restoration to the tune of ÂŁ25k complete with invoices and photographs from 2013 when the works were completed. The car has covered no miles since the restoration and is a very underrated model which at a fraction of the cost of the 2002 turbo will surely rise in value. Another must see to be appreciated, this is a truly stunning car that boasts a stylish and unique body that is rarely seen.

Tunbury Avenue In our opinion this is one of the largest Character Built Detached Houses on the market for sale in the immediate area with the main parts dating back to the 1930s. With many rooms this property lends itself to a large family home with up to 6 bedrooms or a substantial 4-bedroom house. The room sizes in this property are very generous with space to spread out. The house has benefited from recent refurbishment. You enter this home from the large porch and walk into a tasteful period hallway which features the original plaster cornice block work. There are two separate lounge reception rooms both with fantastic feature fireplaces and a formal dining room that will accommodate a large table for entertaining with views out to the rear garden. There is also a stunning Custom Designed Ream fully fitted kitchen which features a superb Corian worksurface which extends to the breakfast area. The kitchen has been custom made to suit this property. There is also a huge walk in pantry which will accommodate a large American style fridge freezer a full-size chest freezer and a large array of shelving. There is a separate utility room which has a sink unit, cupboards, plumbing for a washing machine as well as space for a tumble dryer. Still on the ground floor there is also a room currently used as a childs play room and a separate study with views over the swimming pool.

ÂŁ950,000 On the first floor there is a long landing with all four double bedrooms and the family bathroom leading off this. The principle bedroom has a large stylish dressing room leading off of it as well as a separate en-suite bathroom which also incorporates a walk-in shower, jacuzzi bath and a twin basin facility. To the rear of this property is a level, wide and long plot that features numerous plants and shrubs as well as a wide patio that extends to the width of the house. There is also a large outdoor swimming pool, ideal for those hot summer days and a large conservatory to relax in. To the front of the property is a large in and out shingle driveway with plenty of space for off road parking as well as an attached garage. The property has gas central heating, double glazed windows and external doors and has been recently repainted externally. This property is ideal for commuting and is within a short drive to junction 3 of the M2 which provides good access by car to London and the Kent Coast. The London coach services for commuters picks up and drops off on this road making a London commute easy. From Rochester and Chatham stations there is also the fast Javelin train service to Stratford and St Pancras. Within the area is also a good selection of schools including Grammar schools. Tunbury Primary School is only a very short walk away.

SAVILLS

How the Thames Shaped Our Homes with Fran Moynihan, Head of Savills Waterfront Historically, the Thames was the centre of the capital’s economic success. However, over the last few decades the commercial importance of the river has waned and instead it has become a prime spot for regeneration and property investment. Although many of the old businesses have now gone, the buildings they left behind still shape the personality of the river and give us a unique insight into what came before. Looking first to the south-west stretch of the river, properties on the banks of the Thames here tend to be Georgian or Victorian period houses. Ruvigny Gardens, for example, is a Victorian terrace where all the houses back onto Putney Embankment and

directly overlook the river. While many remain fairly traditional, a number have modern additions which make the most of having the Thames on their doorstep. Properties here tend to attract families who want to make the most of the green and quiet environment and the sense of community that living by the river provides, particularly on boat race day. Moving further up the river you start to see more of an influence from new-build design. Chelsea Waterfront, for example, is a new development based around the original Lots Road power station. Historically, the power station was used to run the London Underground: coal was brought up the river on barges and dropped here to generate energy for the Tubes. Now it’s finding a new lease of life by being converted into luxury apartments with signature waterside restaurants, cafés and boutique shops. A selection of new riverside properties in the immediate area won’t just enjoy river views but also the façade of this iconic Victorian structure. One of my favourite things about properties on the river is the combination of new and old, with modern homes sitting next to some of the most historic buildings in London. Nowhere is that more prevalent than at NEO Bankside, a recently built development next to Tate Modern, overlooking St Paul’s Cathedral and just a few minutes’ walk from the Globe Theatre. new and old is something that is seen up and down the river and provides the opportunity for people to live among the most famous landmarks of London. Over in the east, the history of the properties tends to live on in the names of the residences that are there today. Much of this

stretch of the river is lined with warehouse conversions, aptly named after their former uses - Gun Wharf, Cinnamon Wharf and, for the pirates who were unlucky enough to be caught, Execution Dock House, to name just a few. The east of the city was an incredibly vibrant commercial hub just a 100 years or so ago, with much of what we imported being brought in here. Now it’s a highly desirable residential area, with many buyers looking here to take advantage of the unique character and period features that the warehouse conversions provide. So if you’re looking for an abundance of history with incredible views all year round, perhaps you should look to the river for you next move.
