FROM THE EDITOR

The UK has experienced a turbulent month with no signs of anything changing soon, but there is light, in the sky at least. The sun has finally decided to rear its head and we have all managed to soak it up in style. Hopefully there will plenty more this month so we can continue to enjoy the endless events in and around London. Most importantly this month is the beginning of the grouse season so look out for the freshest feast in town as pubs and restaurants fight for the crown of being the first. If you are keen to be in the race yourself, you will want to make sure you’re dressed for the occasion. Purdey’s AW16 collection should do the trick with some glorious pieces for both men and women to keep you warm during the hunt and

to help you enjoy the catch after. Regardless of whether you are interested in heading out to find some grouse or not, there are many more reasons to head out to the English countryside - the current exchange rates for a start. Head just a couple of hours from London and you can find some of the most pleasant spots in the country. What’s more, you can splash out on one the best weekend cars we’ve seen to soak up those country lanes with ease and excessive amounts of joy. The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider has it all...besides space, but it more than makes up for it in noise. August is often a time when London’s demographic shifts from resident to tourist, but if you are sticking around, don’t shy away, get out and enjoy this fantastic city.

FINANCE WITH MATT GOLD

Plenty of Opportunities in a Messy World Our financial insider reviews the global markets Watching the news, it is hard to be optimistic. Brexit has happened before Grexit; Donald Trump could become the next US President; racial tension in US; terrorist attack in Nice and shooting in Munich. It has been a month since the Brexit referendum and many people feel the world is in a bit of a mess. Many sad stories and many uncertainties. The British Sterling jumped off the cliff after Brexit vote and against the EUR, it was at 1.3055 before and went to as low as 1.1646 on 7 July and rebounded to 1.1937 as of 22 July. That

was a near 3-year low against Euro. Against the US Dollar, the British Pound went below 1.30 to a 31-year low. There was a big side show going on in GBP versus JPY. It was at 154.77 before the referendum and the Pound weakened to JPY 130.18 on 8 July, rebounding to 139.02 as of 22 July. In short, Britain has become 10% cheaper in the eyes of Americans, Europeans and the Japanese. Since Brexit, we have Japanese Softbank buying UK chip-designer ARM, US AMC Entertainment buying London-based Odeon &

employees. The deal values the “Clash of Clans” developer at USD 10.2 billion, nearly double from a year ago. According to thinkgaming.com, Clash of Clans daily revenue is estimated to be USD 453,000 and 24,600 daily installations. It ranked 5th on top grossing games and 48th on top free games as of 24th July. Maybe not many people are familiar with smartphone games “Clash of Clans”, but many grew up with Nintendo Gameboy and Pokemon Pikachu. Pokemon was first released in 1996. In July 2016, Pikachu entered the smart phone games arena with a global blockbuster Pokemon Go. Pokemon Go was released in Australia, North America, Europe and Japan. It beat the Candy Crush Saga record in US to become one of the most used smart device apps. As of 22 July, Pokemon Go was downloaded by more than 40 million people worldwide. The game makes use of location, camera and augmented reality technology. It combines real world with the virtual world so one could take their children to Hyde Park to catch virtual pocket monsters and battle with other players in Trafalgar Square. On 19th July, Nintendo share price in Japan was at one stage doubled since the launch of Pokemon Go and it has come off 10% from its JPY 32,700 5 year high to close at JPY 28,220 as of 22 July. Its market capitalization is JPY 4 trillion or GBP 28.8 billion, a bit higher than ARM. The bargain hunting was across the board. The European stock market has also digested the Brexit news pretty well. Eurostoxx 50 Index dropped from 3037.67 as of 23 June (Thursday) to a bottom of 2,697.44 as of 27 June (Monday) and recovered to 2972.23 as of 22 July. The FTSE 100 index was 6,338.1 on 23 June, dived to 5,982.2 on 27 June and now higher than pre-Brexit level at 6,730.48. Of course, if we take 10% off due to GBP weakening, it is weaker than pre-Brexit. UK banking stocks have not recovered. Taking the same 3 dates as above, RBS pls was 250.50 GBp, 174.30 GBp and 188.92 GBp. Lloyds was 72.15 GBp, 51.15 GBp and 54.49 GBp. Barclays was 186.95GBp, 127.20 GBp and 151.80GBp. Aberdeen Asset Management share price matched the performance of FTSE 100. It was 312.70 GBp on 23 June, 245.80 GBp on 27 June and 316.00 as of 22 July. Hargreaves Lansdown was 1389.00 GBp, 1056.00 GBp and 1271.74 GBp. One could see the more UK centric the business, the more hammered are the share prices. Too early to say the worst is over but for sure, the smart money is in full action already.

The Softbank ARM deal is a GBP 24.3 billion takeover and it will be Europe’s biggest-ever technology deal if it goes through. Investors get nervous whenever “biggest-ever” deals go through. It could mark the burst of a bubble. Diamond in the Rubber Roger Dubuis once again demonstrates the pioneering ideas that put their

Following the outstanding showcase in Harrods last month, Roger Dubuis have expanded on the saga of its Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon collection with a new trilogy in which vivid gemstones play a starring role. Keen enthusiasts of the iconic Excalibur collection will immediately notice the presence of its signature characteristics contributing to its unmistakable strength of character: the large round case with its fluted bezel and distinctive triple lugs, as well as Dauphine type hands. Roger Dubuis’ recognised leadership in contemporary skeleton work is expressed through the Astral Skeleton concept, while its equally inimitable flying tourbillon is showcased to particularly dramatic effect in this Spider version. The Manufacture gives added sparkle to its reputation for innovations and world firsts through these new coloured stone interpretations of the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon. Setting rubber with precious stones is a ground-breaking achievement first presented by Roger Dubuis in 2015 and protected by a “Soft Stones in the Sky” patent crowning two years of development. It boldly exemplifies the Manufacture’s penchant for disruptive materials. Adorning such an elastic, technical and sporty material as rubber with gemstones implied perfect mastery of the exact thicknesses required. The substantial physical difficulties involved were overcome by setting them into the rubber moulding over the bezel using a technique based on plastic deformation. In these colourful new interpretations, 60 baguettecut night black spinels, red rubies or blue sapphires offset by black DLC titanium complement the strong contrasts between silver-toned and black elements, adding immeasurably precious depth to the already unmistakable 3D aesthetic impact of the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon.

Each flamboyantly distinctive version of these eight-piece limited series sparkles with its unique colour differentiation on the bezel, crown, small seconds counter and hand-tips. All three variations on the gem-studded rubber theme are teamed with a high-tech black rubber strap, forcefully accentuating the urban elegance of this exceptional timepiece. These are the latest renditions of a timepiece evoking the patient, meticulous and inventive nature of the work done by the resourceful arachnid as it daily spins its web in ever more intricate patterns, reinventing its craft and constantly adapting it to new situations - much like Roger Dubuis itself. In 2015, the previous pioneering experience of the Manufacture in the field of contemporary skeleton work enabled it to drive this expertise beyond the movement alone and apply it to whole new areas of the watch: the case, flange and hands. Gregory Bruttin, Roger Dubuis Product Strategy Director says: “By promoting transparency, visibility and sculptural effects, the Spider principle offers an ideal expression of the superlative quality and high-end finishes implied by Poinçon de Genève certication: a reliable guarantee of exclusivity, origin, expertise, performance and durability.” This Spider-inspired external skeleton work accentuates the distinctive movement structure epitomising the status of the Manufacture as the specialist of architectural mechanics. Likewise pushing boundaries to the limit, the dynamic Roger Dubuis Astral Skeleton is based on an exclusive multi-level, starshaped construction while enhancing the clarity of the dials through its star tips pointing directly to hour-markers. In addition, the RD505SQ calibre powering the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon models also features another technical characteristic that has become a Roger Dubuis signature: the flying tourbillon with its carriage shaped like a Celtic cross.

KEN KESSLER

The Art of Ceramic Watches Ken Kessler

A recent visit to the IWC factory in Schaffhausen reminded me of that brand’s pioneering effort in establishing modern ceramics as a viable case material. Amusingly, the legendary Kurt Klaus, who was the master watchmaker involved in the development of the IWC Da Vinci, admitted to me that his case material of choice is - as with every sane, experienced watchmaker - good, ol’ stainless steel. 2016 marks the 30th Anniversary of IWC introducing allceramic cases to the world via that particular watch, the earliest of which were offered in black or white. While Klaus prefers stainless steel because of myriad properties including strength and durability, he also appreciated that the marketing types

at IWC at the time wanted a material that was strong, light, scratch-resistant and - as would prove its value over the next three decades - able to be produced in a number of unusual colours. This remains important because all-black watches are now hugely popular, but early examples of black watches were made with fragile coatings that could wear off, revealing the base metal underneath. Ceramics do not suffer this because the colour penetrates all the way through the material. But while ceramics are strong enough even to be used as knife blades for implements used by professional chefs, Klaus admitted that there were early concerns about fragility.

20

COLUMN He recounted to me that the late Gunther Bl mlein, the watch industry giant who rescued IWC, JaegerLeCoultre and A. Lange & S hne, took one of the early ceramic cases and threw it out of the factory window onto the street, just to see what would happen. The case was recovered and found to be unscathed, but that was only part of the story: had it featured normal watch lugs that protruded from the case, they might have snapped off. A ceramic case could shatter if dropped against a hard surface. The relative brittleness is inherent, but modern ceramics are tough, as the aforementioned knives attest. The composition of ceramic used in watch cases is often a hybrid material like Zirconium oxide, as found in the manufacture of artificial gemstones. Ceramics are among the hardest substances available, they are stable and can be used in alloys to create unique materials, such as Hublot’s Magic Gold, which achieves the goal of being a scratchproof gold. With hindsight, though, we know that there have been

remarkably few casualties among ceramic-cased watches, so now they have become an accepted alternative to steel or precious metals, along with titanium, aluminium and carbon fibre. M a nu f a c t u r i n g with ceramics i n v o l v e s moulding the sintered material, while polishing and finishing such a hard surfaces requires harder tools, e.g. diamond-tipped. Watch manufacturers love the way ceramics resist temperature changes, can be fashioned into key parts, especially bezels, and - it must be admitted - look fantastic. Whether or not IWC intends to issue a commemorative model is unclear, but the brand continues to produce ceramic-cased watches, and for unlikely models when you consider that the Da Vinci was a complicated dress watch. Currently, the company offers the Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance Ceramic and a version for AMG, where both watches benefit from the non-magnetic properties of ceramics. In the vast family of pilots’ watches, IWC produces a host of Top Gun models in ceramic, and collectors remember fondly the 2014 St. Exupery “The Last Flight” Chronograph Edition, with an unusual brown ceramic case made from silicon nitride. Clearly, IWC’s fondness for the material continues.

KEN KESSLER

What IWC did for airborne ceramics, Panerai did for the deep. The Black Seal model was first offered in ceramic nearly a decade ago, and the company still uses the material - it does look sensational as the base for the Radiomir-shaped case - with the 45mm Radiomir Ceramica and Ceramica 8 Days, and the Radiomir 1940 3 Days Ceramica. If you prefer Panerais with flip-lock crown protection, the company also offers five ceramic versions of the Luminor 1950, including the all-black Tuttonero. Ceramics are now everywhere, thanks in no small part to Chanel’s hugely influential J12, as seen in white every Sunday on the wrist of Antiques Roadshow’s Fiona Bruce. Omega has issued an all-black ceramic Speedmaster, the highly-coveted “Dark Side of the Moon”, Rado has used the material for decades, and nowadays

downmarket fashion brands will sell you ceramic models. Even Jaquet Droz, a haute horlogerie brand known for enamel dials and automata, has succumbed to the lure of ceramic. Perhaps the best use of ceramics, if fragility concerns you due to conditioning and imagining that it’s the same material as found in a dinner plate or flower pot, is in enhancements. Perfectly illustrative of this usage are Rolex’s gorgeous bezels, as found on the latest GMT-Master II or Submariner. You have the security of stainless steel cases, proven over the decades, with the stunning look of a long-lived, never-to-fade ceramic accent. On the other hand, if your name is Svetlana and you’re sleeping with a Russian gangster, there’s always the Chanel J12.

Coinciding the 60th anniversary of the BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express , which runs from 5-16 October this year, the special edition timepiece will once again cement IWC’s partnership with the festival as Official Time Partner, a partnership that began in 2014 and is set to continue until 2019. Limited to just 60 timepieces in stainless steel on an elegant blue strap, each of the exclusive Pilot’s Watch Spitfire Chronograph Edition BFI London Film Festival 2016 is numbered on the case back, alongside the inscription “BFI Film Forever”, increasing their appeal to collectors. The timepiece features an IWC inhouse 89365-calibre movement alongside a chronograph and flyback function and this year for the first time IWC, together with the BFI London Film Festival will offer an IWC Filmmaker Bursary Award. The £50,000 bursary will be given to a writer director who identifies as British and has a first or second feature-length fiction film premiering in the Official Selection at the BFI LFF. This award is the first of its kind in the British film industry. With submissions currently underway, three finalists will be announced at the BFI on 20 September 2016. IW387812) is available now at the IWC Boutique London, 138 New Bond Street, as well as selected retailers in the United Kingdom.

An unusual combination, Chopard has unveiled a special London edition Happy Sport watch created with steel and diamonds. Modern and daring, the watch was conceived in 1993 when Caroline Scheufele, Chopard CoPresident and Artistic Director, designed a sporty watch based on an original design in an unexpected combination - steel and diamonds. The Happy Sport was born. True to the spirit of Happy Diamonds, these gems dancing freely between two sapphire crystals soon became a symbol of Chopard and feminine watchmaking as a whole. In honour of the Happy Diamonds 40th Anniversary this year, Chopard has unveiled a special London edition of the Happy Sport in rose gold and stainless steel featuring a green dial and a leather strap, with the iconic moving diamonds combined with green tsavorites to compliment the colour palette of the watch. The watch is exclusively available at Selfridges where there are five pieces on a leather strap and five pieces with a bracelet available chopard.co.uk

WATCHES

Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah

Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite eweller O ficial agents or man o the world s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on iamonds recious stones stablished in ew avendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.

Independent watch brands have come a long way in recent years. The popularity of the mechanical watch industry, though slightly slowing in sales the past year, has nonetheless created a fantastic landscape of innovation primarily led by these independent companies who benefit from the lack of constraints that sometime hinder those brands within larger groups. That said, the force of personality created by Brands such as Richard Mille and Greubel Forsey have pushed the older brands to up their game. The use of space age materials and evolving existing mechanics has become the norm rather than something exceptional. I believe because of their loyalty to classic cases and dials, Breguet is not given remotely enough credit for their work within the mechanical elements of watch making. This is something the brand had quietly developed in the last decade but perhaps in not aiming at a certain demographic of clients, these quite frankly incredible developments have not garnered the expected attention outside of the watch industry. Let’s return to 1999, Nicolas Hayek, then Chairman of the Swatch Group purchases the Breguet name from an investment house. Despite the brand’s history, it had offered nothing of note for many years and could safely be described as a sleeping giant. Mr. Hayek, passionate to the core, restored the brand to its intended glory, even using his own money to recreate the fabled Marie Antoinette pocket watch (the most complicated pocket watch of its time & certainly the most historically valuable pocket watch ever made) and vitally, invested heavily in the development of mechanical innovations, which Abraham Louis Breguet had pioneered himself. This return to the brand’s roots has led to some fantastic complications and supremely clever innovations. Most recently, the Breguet reference 7727, Classique Chronometrie, took the top prize at Geneva’s vaunted Grand Prix D’Horlogerie in 2014. Breguet had implemented the use of silicon in many of their timepieces to help improve durability

given the stress placed upon certain parts of the movement that leads to mechanical movements needing to be serviced alongside the fact silicon is impervious to magnetism, another major factor in the malfunctioning of modern timepieces. However, this new reference took the attention to improving the durability and accuracy to another level with the integration of magnetic pivots. Patented by Breguet in 2010, the simple description of this incredible addition is that the balance wheel is suspended between two powerful magnets, which protect it from any knocks or destabilisation that may occur by magnetically pulling it back to its central position. The use of silicon is vital here as the clever magnetic pivots can only be effective if the material around the balance is completely antimagnetic. Theoretically, as the balance wheel is now suspended, it should be virtually impregnable to

New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF

any magnetic or gravitational impact thus further promoting durability and accuracy. Not content with developing a world first in applying the magnetic pivots to the movement, Breguet, as we have come to love and appreciate, want the purveyor to visually enjoy the benefits of this innovation whilst also showing to the industry as a whole what this new escapement is capable of. This can be equated to the development of an electric Tesla sports car against its petrol hungry peer group. By increasing durability with silicon and removing the potential for wear on the components that hold the balance wheel in place, by essentially removing them; Breguet have increased the oscillation of the balance wheel to 10Hz - doubling that compared to say Zenith’s famed El Primero. Typically, a good movement will oscillate around 3Hz, something that can be viewed via the sapphire caseback on your watch should you have one. To more than treble this frequency without destabilising what is still quite a fragile environment is astounding. In turn, a better than chronometer certified rate of –1 to +3 seconds a day variance is offered (in any position!), a visible and quantifiable result of this superbly innovative timepiece. Returning to the younger upstarts, there has been a trend for futuristic case designs and dial layouts that offer fantastic levels of architecture specifically created to offer the impression of complication and modernity. Despite leading the field in using this

particular combination of patents and delivery systems, Breguet have chosen to retain their very minimalist and traditionalist case and dial layout to showcase this new reference. A slightly larger than typical 41mm case diameter is offered in either Pink or White Gold with a sapphire caseback showing off the movement. An alligator strap is captured using their new and improved triple blade folding clasp with “B” emblem; a nice touch in my opinion. The silvered guilloche dial has at least four separate finishes as one would expect from Breguet, with a power reserve indicator given it is a hand wound movement and a seconds sub dial at 12 o’clock, which is partnered by a 20th of a second smaller counter that is permanently whizzing around visually showcasing the high frequency of the movement. To see this and just how quickly the balance wheel oscillates is a feast for the eyes. It is these little details that separate Breguet from their counterparts, both in terms of historic brands and also newer companies. Without sacrificing the essence of a classic Breguet watch, they have completely redeveloped what is under the hood so to speak, invoking classic techniques alongside breathtaking new ideas. The price tag is respective of such a development but before judging it from that perspective, I would highly recommend you to view the watch with us in person and enjoy the balance and poise of what is a ground breaking piece of mechanical engineering.

Darphin L’Institut Facial Sonic Cleansing and Massaging Expert Inspired by the history of the brand, Darphin has created their very own facial cleansing brush, however don’t be fooled, this isn’t just any old cleansing device, the L’Institut Facial Sonic Cleansing and Massaging Expert comes complete with a cleansing head, as well as a massaging one too. As a trained kinesiotherapist, Pierre Darphin opened his Paris institute in 1958 and many of his transformative treatments relied on intensive facial devices. Using these devices, Darphin pioneered techniques such as the muscle-stimulating “Kine-Sonde” sonic massage and the mechanised gymnastic facial. Virtually overnight, the Darphin Paris Institute became the city’s premiere destination for luxury skincare treatments. Today, Darphin is introducing the next generation of facial devices. Inspired by the expert hands at L’Institut Darphin in Paris, the device leverages the brand’s cleansing and massaging expertise, offering a comprehensive 2-minute facial at home. Designed to mimic the “magic fingers” of the therapists at the L’Institut Darphin and the immediate rejuvenating benefits of Deep Massage, L’Institut Facial Sonic Cleansing and Massaging Expert thoroughly cleanses the skin and boosts microcirculation in just two steps. The final result is a radiant and noticeably youthful-

looking complexion. First the specially developed sonic cleansing brush cleanses, and purifies the skin by gently sweeping away dead skin cells, traces of makeup, dirt and pollution that can contribute to skin sensitivity and early visible signs of ageing, before tightening the appearance of pores and reducing excess oil to help reveal younger-looking skin. We recommend using with the brand’s Aromatic Cleansing Balm. Once the skin is clean, and fully prepared for next step skincare treatments such as serums and moisturisers. Next the sonic massage head is used with your favourite moisturiser to boost microcirculation leaving skin looking plumper, smoother and more radiant. The cooling smooth steel massaging head is ergonomically sculpted in a star pattern to work in synergy with the natural facial muscle structure, helping to relax facial muscles, stimulates microcirculation and smooths lines. Recommended use for both heads is just one minute each. To celebrate the launch of L’Institut Facial Sonic Cleansing and Massaging Expert, the beauticians at L’Institut Darphin Vendome in Paris have developed a 30-minute discovery treatment based on the sonic facial ritual. This treatment will be offered in Darphin spas worldwide.

FITNESS WITH ALEX CASTRO

CrossFit or CrossFad? with Alex Castro

Alex Castro is one of London’s top personal trainers ith over ten ears e erience within the fitness industr le trains his clients in the it alongside working at arr s ootcam as an instructor at both their uston and oorgate branches

Beyond what it preaches physically, many people who do CrossFit style workouts, believe that they are a great mental toughener. You really have to push yourself to your limits and, if you do this at a box as part of a class, you certainly end up feeling a bond with every other warrior who has managed to endure the pain with you! In the US, Australia and certainly more and more over here in the UK, the community element of CrossFit is an increasing part of its overall appeal. I guess I’m not convinced it is a fad myself but I would say to any of you who are unsure, have a watch - the CrossFit Games are on (and you can catch up with it for free on YouTube after the event). Then perhaps have a go at a ‘Workout of the Day’ (scaled for your ability - there are apps available) and see if you like it. My favourite (in a sadistic way!) is ‘Victoria’: 10 Thrusters; 14 Box Jumps; 12 Sumo Deadlift High Pull; 12 Burpees; 27 Kettlebell Swings; 5 Rounds for Time. Don’t forget, it doesn’t have to become your way of life, you can always just incorporate a simple 15 minute CrossFit style workout at the end of your normal routine to spice things up a bit!

Chances are, you know someone who does CrossFit. They use jargon and acronyms you don’t understand (“WOD”, “EMOM”, “AMRAP”), talk about workouts named after people (“Fran”, “Annie”, “Murph”) and may seem obsessed with the cult-like craze. I have to be honest, whilst I am not currently a member of a ‘box’ (the CrossFit church), I can certainly be classified as one of these geeks! However, that doesn’t stop me from scrutinising it as a way of working out, particularly as I get older and my body doesn’t bounce back from injuries and niggles the way it once did... CrossFit was developed by Greg Glassman (a guy in the US) and he wanted to define fitness in a meaningful and measurable way (to make it so that, like a series of fitness tests you could monitor your progression). He created the program to focus on varied functional movements performed at a high intensity. Whilst many people may associate CrossFit with lifting heavy weights, it goes far beyond that and focuses on running, swimming, rowing and gymnastics, as well as weightlifting. Some critics have suggested that this makes a CrossFitter a ‘Jack of all trades’ and a specialist of none. Indeed, for weightlifting, these critics would argue that specific training is vital and long rests, particularly where you have heavy weights, between very short sets, are necessary. They also contend that because of the increased stress on the body and how fatigued it is after intense exercising, CrossFitters are more likely to get injured. To my mind, these are all valid points but I haven’t come across any CrossFit athletes or coaches who don’t spend a long, concentrated period of time perfecting form and technique and carrying out the slow and specific training exercises before embarking upon any type of CrossFit workout. I am also, more generally, an avid supporter of workouts which test different elements of fitness - whether that is flexibility, endurance or power - and I know many people enjoy variety when exercising.

The Glorious Twelfth Last year, Head Chef Simon at The Yew Tree in Highclere brought a unique take on ‘drive for freshness’, rushing across the country to provide his customers one of Britain’s finest culinary delights - young Grouse on the Glorious Twelfth. This year, his dedication to promoting game consumption and a field-to-fork way of life has inspired 8 more pubs from the Epicurean Collection to join in a nationwide grouse race. “The young grouse from the first drive of the new season is the freshest, most exquisite quality game there is” explains Chef Simon Davis. “From a chef ’s point of view, I want the very best when it comes to my work. This experience has been a dream come true in seeking the best quality game in its greatest condition, and I am excited for my fellow chefs to do the same this year.” The initiative has spread to The Woolpack in Winchester, and throughout the South of England. Landlords and chefs from eight of the pubs of The Epicurean Collection; The Yew Tree,

The White Horse, The Seagrave Arms, The King John Inn, The Kings Arms, The Woolpack, The Punchbowl (Mayfair) and The Admiral Codrington (Chelsea) will spend the night of the 11th of August in the Yorkshire countryside in preparation for the journey the next day. The teams will collect a few brace of the youngest, freshest grouse possible before rocketing down the moors and heading home as fast as possible. The chefs have carefully developed their unique grouse recipes to provide to their esteemed guests, featuring delectable grouse dishes and tasting menus at The Punchbowl on Farm Street and The Admiral Codrington on Mossop Street. Additionally, the listed pubs are all offering grouse on their menus this 12th and would love for you to join them. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy a British delicacy on The Glorious Twelfth that is not to be missed. Please call the pubs directly to book your place at their respective grouse evenings.

era at Claridge s Inspired by the constant changing of the seasons, Michelinstarred Fera at Claridge’s is a creative, well-presented take on modern British cuisine. Fera, the Latin word for ‘wild’, reflects the powerful connection to nature that’s at the heart of the restaurant’s ethos. Open since 2014 and headed up by renowned chef Simon Rogan, also of Two-Michelin starred L’Enclume, Fera features an ever-changing la carte and tasting menu using the finest organic ingredients, many coming from Simon’s farm in the Lake District, and others from trusted growers. In its art deco inspired glory, the restaurant has a calming effect. The atmospheric ambiance is further enhanced with a beautiful central ‘tree’ and candlelight. Aside from the bar tucked away in the corner of the restaurant, which we are told can be visited without reservation and perfect for drinks after a long day of retail therapy on nearby New Bond Street, and well worth for the incredible take on a Bloody Mary made with horseradish and mustard vodka, diners are also invited into the kitchen to see the action take place. With an almost ‘open door policy’ the open kitchen doors provide a great insight to the running of a Michelin starred kitchen and the restaurant really encourages you to be nosy should you wish. It’s also a great opportunity to see all the fantastic fresh produce and herbs from the farm in the Lake

As we said before, it is highly worth starting the meal with an aperitif cocktail before deciding what to have from the well placed wine menu. A knowledgeable sommelier is on hand to help should it be necessary. The meal opens with some homemade bread and should you wish while you peruse, a snack or two. The menu changes depending on what is available seasonally but when we went snacks included Stewed rabbit with lovage; Seaweed cracker, scallop and alexanders; and Tunworth, yolk and salsify. Moving on to starters, highlights include the Portland crab, green tomato, fennel and pickled seaweed; but the real star of the show is the generously portioned Native lobster, carrots, lobster cream, crispy cured pork and watercress. For main and ideally light for summer, the hearty Monkfish with sprouting broccoli broth, broad beans and sea herbs is very good; as is the Turbot in smoked oil, spinach, onion and Kenton leek. Meat eaters would enjoy the Cornish Lamb and Goosnargh duck. The desserts are equally varied and just as innovative with Frozen white chocolate with dill, cucumber and apple; Yorkshire rhubarb, jasmine cream, toasted barley and buttermilk; and Smoked chocolate, earl grey ice cream, with sea buckthorn. For the savoury types there is a selection of British and Irish cheese which if we say is one of the best we have come across in a long

District, skill of the chefs and even the ultra-luxe chef ’s kitchen which alongside being an almost creative lab for new menu additions, acts similarly to a chefs table encouraging diners to learn and watch as their meal is created.

with Zoran Peric

Zoran Peric is a cocktails and spirits expert with a background in launching and managing some of London’s top bars such as the Soho Hotel. He has also worked with some of the country’s leading drinks brands, working with them to develop their brand and drinks conce ts

Summer has fi nally hit London with all its force and as the sun’s rays cover London’s iconic landmarks, most of us, at one point, will likely be reaching for that icy cold beer in the fridge. If you are one of those people who have been drinking beer straight from the bottle or pint glass year after year, it is time you try something new. I under stand the refreshing gratifi cation of an ice-cold beer, however, London is thriving on its discovery of how great beer is for mixing in drinks. Beer cocktails are becoming even more popular than the liquid itself. Over the years the bar scene has seen a steady rise in popularity of the “Beer Cocktail” - the result of mixing beer with other types of brews, spirits, tinctures or liqueurs. The beer cocktail stands apart from the beer itself, with the additional liquids working in harmony with the beer to create a hybrid cocktail. The concept of mixing diff erent liquids with beer is not a new one; there are records that show beer, wine and mead concoctions were served at the funeral of King Midas in 700 B.C. Other records show that colonists in 18th century America used to enjoy a drink named the “Flip”. The “Flip” was made by mixing a pitcher of beer, some molasses and some rum, before plunging a hot iron into the pitcher; the heat from the hot iron creates fl ash-roasting of the grains and caramelizing of the sugars; crafting a very unique drink, to say the least. More recently, and possibly less unusual takes on mixing beer with other liquids can been seen right on our doorstep. The British have been enjoying

the 50-50 split between draft beer and lemonade, known as a Shandy for years, alongside the very popular “Beer Top”, where a pint of beer is fi nished off with a splash of lemonade to create a sweeter tasting tipple. When looking further afi eld to Northern Mexico, the traditional drink of choice is the Michelada, made by blending cervaz with lime juice and dashes of hot sauce, soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce together and serving it in a glass rimmed with salt. This traditional drink is actually simple enough to recreate at home by using 50ml Silver Patrón, 100ml tomato juice, add a few drops of Tabasco, a few drops of Worcestershire Sauce, a pinch of salt, pepper and sugar followed by one teaspoon of soy sauce; lastly add 20ml of lime juice before stirring well over ice and top with a Mexican lager. If you are adventurous enough to attempt the garnish, create a ground black pepper and chili powder mix and roll on to the rim of the glass, and there you have it, your very own homemade beer cocktail! Whatever the reason for this trend of mixing beer with other liquids, it has traveled through the centuries and it is safe to say that this trend has offi cially arrived and is fi nding its place in a plethora of London’s best bar’s cocktail menu’s. One of the most delicious recipes I have come across can be found at China Tang, named the “Pollen Beer Fizz”. This delicious cocktail is made using 50ml Patrón Silver, 20ml Martini Bianco, 15ml Lime and Green Tea Sherbet, 15ml Honey and Pollen Syrup and, as the name of the cocktail would suggest, top the drink up to the brim with Tsingtao Beer. The drink is beautifully crafted and is exemplary of how to make a perfect beer cocktail. It is vital that when creating a beer cocktail, you respect the beer, ensuring that you only add other ingredients that will highlight the best features of the beer, rather than over-shadowing or overpowering the beers tones; qualities you can guarantee you will experience when you go to one of London’s many aspiring bars. As with any industry, bartenders and mixologists will always endeavor to progress behind the bar and distinguish themselves from competitors by pushing the creative boundaries and by pioneering innovative techniques to create the most beautiful, interesting, delicious, if not unusual serves to delight and surprise those who walk through the door. oran peric07

Burger and Lobster Canary Wharf Burger and Lobster has finally come to the Wharf with a brand new location in West India Quay. Perfect for some water-front dining, the impressively large bar and restaurant also offers a fantastic dining and drinking terrace where you can enjoy some great frozen cocktails including Pina Coladas and Daiquiris to get you into the summer spirit. Famed for their burgers and lobsters (obviously), the recently opened restaurant also offers a new menu, which considering Burger and Lobster never

used to have one at all is a big move! The new branch offers some new additions diners may not have seen elsewhere - although we are told they are being rolled out across the other restaurants. No longer will you have to choose thanks to a combination meal delivering both burger and lobster on one plate, perfect for those who either just can’t decide or are in need of some serious culinary indulgence. You will also find a selection of different burgers and the succulent lobster roll to suit your taste.

First opened in May 2006, Michelin-starred Galvin at Windows hasn’t lost any of its charm as time has gone on. Located on the 28th floor of London Hilton on Park Lane, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree birds-eye view of the capital while sipping on one of the many cocktails at the bar or dining in the restaurant. Glamorous and inviting, the décor has been inspired by the golden age of the 1930s providing a glorious colour palette of creams, golds and dark woods creating the perfect setting for the modern French haute cuisine. Fine dining at its best, the elegant, seasonally inspired menu has been created exclusively by Head Chef Joo Won and the team. Service is how you would expect at a place of such prestige, the waiting team and sommeliers are both knowledgeable and welcoming navigating you through the wine and varying menus effortlessly. The Menu Prestige offers standout dishes such as Marinated Iberico pork, cucumber salad, soy bean and chilli paste; roasted fillet of Halibut pomme puree, shitake mushrooms, prawn and dashi broth; and homemade tagliatelle, summer green vegetables, king oyster mushroom, and aged Parmesan. The menu

is priced at £75 per person for three courses. However, for August only, the restaurant is offering a special five course menu prepared by the Michelin-starred chef and his team where you ‘Pay what you like’. Certainly not something that happens every day, strictly limited tables will be available, for a maximum of four guests two days in advance. General manager Fred Sirieix says "It will be very interesting from a human perspective to see how people will react when we ask them what they want to pay for the food. Chris (Galvin) and I believe 99.9% of people value honesty and integrity." Pre-booking by phone is required, 48 hours prior to the date only and the menu is subject to availability at the following times: Lunch - Monday to Friday 12pm - 2.30pm; Dinner - Monday to Friday 6pm to 6.30pm and 9pm to 10pm. The ‘Pay What You Like’ menu experience is based on a 2 day rolling mechanism; Galvin at Windows will continue to run the menu, providing that the total price paid by all guests is enough to break even.

HARRODS WINE

The Oenophilist

with Edward Gerard, Wine Buyer for Harrods

dward erard started his career c cling cases o fine wine round the SW1 and SW3 postcodes. Some 13 years later after a stint in the USA, and having extensively traveled and tasted his way around the wine world he finds himsel with the enviable ob o selecting the vast range available in the Wine Rooms at Harrods.

This September, Harrods will be launching its inaugural New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. That’s right; 41 years after the first grapes were planted in Marlborough by Montana Wines, Harrods will release the first New Zealand wine under the Harrods brand. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, love it or hate it, has been a phenomenon on a global scale for the past two decades, driven particularly by the Marlborough region. So why, you might ask, is Harrods releasing its first own-label offering now? The short answer is that we have been looking at New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc for a number of years. After much searching and consultation with numerous producers, we are finally happy with the quality of the offering, and are proud to be able to sell a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc true to the region’s origins with a terroir-driven wine that genuinely excites us. When I joined the trade in 2000, this wine was the on-trend subject, infiltrating the independent wine shops across the UK, led by companies including Cloudy Bay and Hunter’s. Back then, these wines had a real sense of something new; wonderfully fresh with a true sense of the DNA of the area. While they had a distinctive gooseberry note, they also had lovely terroir-driven minerality. And there was a gorgeous texture to the wines too.

Fast forward to the end of the noughties. By that point there had been a proliferation of Oyster Bay and other huge brands promoting more commercial expressions of the region’s Sauvignon Blanc traits – leaving independent wine merchants and their customers looking for more than the commercial styles on offer. Thankfully, a core group of producers listened, and now there is an emergence of winemakers given the authority to experiment with single-vineyard cuvées and barrel-aged expressions that pay homage to the award-winning wines of the 1990s. That is a great result for us as consumers; if you have abstained from “Kiwi Sauvignons” for the past few years, you should be prepared to get excited again – Harrods is here to tell you the future is bright. The Harrods Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 shows restrained grass and herbaceous notes mixed in with subtle fruit notes of citrus and passion fruit with the tiniest hint of gooseberry at the core. The palate is clean and fresh with a mouthwatering wet-pebble mineral streak which lifts your taste buds; that gives the wine a platform and structure to allow it to pair with a plethora of foods from sashimi to spicy Thai dishes. The Harrods New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc 2015 will be available online and from the Food Halls from the middle of September; retail price £12.95.

REVIEW pomegranate juice and Champagne and the Golden Curves Ketel one vodka shaken with ice wine, fresh pear juice, lemon and sugar. Whatever your preferred tipple, there will be something for you and you might just come across your new favourite thanks to the unique taster cocktail that lets you try the drink your friend, partner or colleague is enjoying without having to ask. A small sample is delivered with your full size drink for even more to enjoy. While there have a nibble on one of the many food offerings. The Polo Bar boasts a wide and varied selection depending on what you fancy, however the large and succulent Panko Crusted Prawns served with a sweet chilli dip are a winner. Perfectly crisp yet incredibly juicy, and the duck spring rolls aren’t far behind. Those a little hungrier can opt for a salad or The Polo Burger to help manage all of those cocktails. The bar also serves fine Beluga and Oscietra Caviar if you are looking for a more luxurious experience. After indulging in the excellent offering at the Polo Bar, you may find that you have a little room for something different. Thankfully, Tsukiji Sushi Restaurant is just across the hotel to accommodate your every need. Seating just 20 people with a traditional red wood interior, the Tsukiji Sushi Restaurant is conveniently located within the Westbury Hotel but has the added benefit of individual access straight on to Bond Street. Fusing together Japanese cuisine and Mayfair sophistication, the freshly prepared and beautifully presented dishes are thanks to the creative vision of head chef

Show Choong and include a wide selection of sushi and sashimi made with the most elusive ingredients from all over the world. Reinventing traditional dishes with healthy, flavour-filled organic ingredients, Show Choong changes the menu each season. This of course means the freshest and most unique offering possible for diners. The menu comprises numerous individual dish options ranging from the cold sushi and sashimi style to hot, flavourfull dishes. Furthermore there are set menu choices which deliver an excellent selection of dishes across the range including grilled scallops, beef tataki and yuzu sorbet and is the perfect way to enjoy your first experience at Tsukiji. The food isn’t the only draw to this hidden gem. Being such a small restaurant, the quality of service is inevitably very good, working almost as a private dining room for guests. You can also rest assured that you won’t find anything less than fresh with the keen eye of Show Choong overseeing every step of the menu from creation to delivery on your table. It wouldn’t be any kind of Japanese restaurant if the offering of sake wasn’t on the table and Tsukiji doesn’t disappoint. With four options to choose from including some exclusively sourced bottles as well as a sake flight to enjoy, you will be more than sufficiently hydrated during your meal. Tsukiji is a unique dining experience unlike most other places in London, you won’t find big crowds thanks to its size, but you can enjoy some of the finest Japanese cuisine in quiet comfort.

YOUR DRIVE

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider There is no legal way of e ploring the depth of this cars ability on roads, but that s not to say you can t e plore the bits that are.

The Italians have done it again. This pocketsized thing of beauty is not simply a fantastic looking machine, but it will awaken your senses in a second well 4.5 seconds to be precise. At least that’s how long it will take you to thrust this mini rocket to 62 mph from standing. Not that impressive I hear you say, well now consider that it’s so small that the only thing they could fit in the boot - besides a small luggage compartment for one and a half bags - was a turbocharged 4-cylinder 1750cc engine. You are now thinking, but my car has a 3.0-litre V6 and doesn’t go that fast and you would probably be right. To fully understand this car, it has to be driven, and driven hard. The reason it is so swift off the line despite its minute engine is thanks to its featherlight construction. Comprising a carbon fibre monocoque chassis with aluminium frames to the front and rear, the car weighs in at just 895kg. But that’s not all. Every aspect of this car has been designed to help this car go as quickly round the track as possible with a few added extras to make it road legal. For example, the steering isn’t supported by heavy power steering units and comes completely unassisted. This of course helps to keep the weight down, but also delivers a driving experience unlike anything else. Thanks to the direct relationship between the wheels and your hands without any funny business in between to distort the feel, you are instantly engaged with the road, aware of every slight movement and able to react instantly. If you want to really feel the difference, you can try out the cars impressive 36 metre stopping distance from 62mph. The car wriggles and pulls as it fights the laws of physics all in the name of entering the next corner at the appropriate speed. However even that is at a level that would most likely be unfamiliar. Able to turn at frightening speeds, this car is capable of the impossible. You can keep pushing and pushing to a point that you

will eventually feel uncomfortable and the car will remain as composed as it was before you even set off. To get everything out of this car that it has to give, you will need to take it to a track. There is no legal way of exploring the depth of this cars ability on UK roads, but that’s not to say you can’t explore the bits that are. Although quite evidently built as a pure-bred driving machine, Alfa Romeo have managed to do what they do best and add a significant dose of Italian flare. This is one of the best looking cars on the road and with such limited space for the Italian marque to play with it becomes an even more impressive feat. Taking the iconic and instantly recognisable Alfa Romeo front grille as a starting point, the distinct lines roll up the front of the car and continue through to the bold, aggressive air intakes positioned behind the door. What you will notice is that these aren’t just lines designed to make the car look good - which they do - they are also cleverly designed to channel air into the vents improving air flow. Not as important on a car with a relatively small engine, but one that nonetheless improves its performance.

73

ALFA ROMEO 4C SPIDER

The headlight clusters are elegant and stylish complete with carbon fibre detailing with the theme continuing up the pillars and on to the wing mirrors. The rear of the car receives similarly clean treatment with simple circular rear light clusters set into the curvature of the body that flows into a subtle yet striking rear lip spoiler. Every inch of this cars design is soft yet precise with sharp lines juxtaposed with curved panels. And the panels themselves are even designed to support the lightness, using a composite construction. On opening the door, you are instantly aware of the carbon fibre influence, with the entire floor of the cabin covered. The rest is hidden behind a leather contrast stitched dash and empty door inserts featuring nothing but a speaker and the means to get in and out of the car - no room for storing anything here. You will find a helpful pouch under the dash on the passenger side with USB and Aux inputs to connect your phone or other device to the stereo, but that’s about it. The interface is equally sparse, with five switches for features such as air conditioning and heated mirrors, three climate control knobs and an Alpine bluetooth head unit which can be used as handsfree.

All of the cars driving functions are available on the centre console which runs between the seats complete with gear buttons as well as a button to alternate between manual and auto gear selection - it automatically sets to auto, but it is a much better drive if you do all the talking. In auto the car can often select a lower gear than you might want when casually driving around as it is constantly looking to be ready for the inevitable acceleration, but on a normal drive it simply increases the noise level - which is already high - and decreases the mpg you get out of it which, thanks to the 1.75-litre turbo’ed unit is impressively high, running a combined figure of 40.9mpg. Regardless of the colour choice, it won’t compete with the noise of the exhaust. Everyone will hear you long before they can even lay eyes on the curvaceous body and loud colour. Alfa offer an optional ‘racing double exhaust tailpipe’ which will awaken your senses before you set off. Consider it a warning as to what you should expect. Under acceleration the engine noise is an exquisitely raspy roar with a recognisable whirling undertone from the turbocharger, only made better by the open top. The 4C does of course come in coupe

YOUR DRIVE

form, and some would argue that the addition £7,000 is a big stretch for a manually removable roof, but the simple fact is that if you are looking to buy this car, it won’t be for functional reasons, so why not splash out and enjoy the stunning sound whilst you soak up the British countryside? Although the 4C Coupe is almost as stunning as its Spider counterpart, it just takes something away from the whole experience, especially if there is a chance of sunshine. After all is said and done, this car offers one of the most true driving experiences you will find in the production vehicle world. So much so, that this is probably closer related to the motorsport industry than the commercial manufacturing one. When you put it all together, you can begin to understand a little why it holds the £59,500 price tag, but you really need to get in and have a go before it truly becomes clear. You won’t find another car quite like this for the money and if you are looking for a weekend car that possesses performance, aesthetics and economy in one pint-sized package, you won’t find many others that fit the bill. Not for the faint of heart, but certainly one that will ignite the Alfa Romeo passion.

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SRT

HEMI Powered Grand Cherokee In true American muscle car style, the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT packs a whopping 6.4-litre HEMI block under the contoured bonnet. As a result the, two and a half tonne monster produces 467 PS with 624 Nm of torque propelling it from zero to sixty-two in just five seconds - close to that of considerably smaller ‘sports’ cars. However, unlike the renowned history of US built muscle cars’ limited turning ability, the Grand Cherokee SRT boasts Bilstein adaptive damping suspension along with four-wheel-drive and

large 380mm ventilated disc brake with six-piston calipers both front and rear. Needless to say, despite the cars size and weight, its turning and stopping ability is surprisingly effective. It’s not only under the skin where you will find hints of this cars performance prowess as the exterior and interior styling are such that you are immediately aware the second you lay eyes on it. Accentuated dual rear exhausts not only provide a visual impact, but deliver a deep, throaty rumble as you accelerate which is matched with the vast crevasses in the bonnet designed to aid in the engine air flow. The rest of the body takes its design cue from the updated Grand Cherokee range with stronger lines over the wheel arches, black detailing on the front and additional rear spoiler. The whole car oozes muscle from the wide flared arches to the sleek, aggressive front end, all of which is of course perfectly suited to the V8 under the bonnet. Although powerful, the HEMI engine design is not the most efficient, but Jeep have managed to achieve not only exceptional performance in the power department, but also a combined consumption of 20.2mpg which - for a 6.4-litre engine in a two and a half tonne vehicle - isn’t a bad achievement and one that could influence a decision to splash out for the extra power. When you consider the consumption figures often found on much smaller vehicles with the same power and performance, you are getting a lot of car for your money. jeep.co.uk

76

Size isn’t everything - so we keep being told - but when it comes to an American on UK soil, there is only one way it should be: big, bold and loud. The SRT certainly does not disappoint on any of those, but it has some functionality to it too. The interior space has been updated along with the rest of the car providing a clean and simple interface for both driver and passenger complete with a large 8.4 inch touchscreen display to and control every aspect of the cars systems including, if you need it, g-force readings. As unnecessary as those features might be in everyday driving, they may come in handy if you decide to take your SRT to its home, the track. It was heavily designed and engineered on the track and as such is comfortable with the exploration of pushing boundaries, so the on-board lap timer, launch control and 0-60 timer are well within their rights being there. You can of course have a little fun with it on the open road, just make sure you’re not breaking any laws in the process. Elsewhere inside, the SRT continues the Grand Cherokee offering of substantial seating and boot space sufficient enough for anything you can’t keep down under acceleration and maintains the ability for some serious off-road use if required. You may find it harder to get out of those sticky situations thanks to even the lightest of touches on the accelerator producing some serious power through the wheels, but should be a lot of fun on some slightly more solid surfaces. If you’re in the market for an SUV but are wanting for a sports car and aren’t looking to spend supercar money then this probably isn’t a bad place to start. Combining every aspect you could possibly want - with the exception of electric car economy - you will struggle to find more for the money.

Grand Cherokee SRT Night Jeep have also released an exclusive limited edition of the high performance SRT. There are just 30 SRT Night versions available in the UK and with orders opening last month, you need to be quick if you want to get your hands on one. This limited edition SRT Night version has a stealth-like appearance with its upper and lower grille mounts, B and C pillars and side window surrounds all coloured Matte Black. The front applique is also Matte Black, as is the ‘Jeep’ and ‘SRT’ badging on the bonnet and tailgate. The rear door features a Matte Black ‘Grand Cherokee’ badge. Stylish ‘Black Vapor’ 20-inch wheels are finished in an exclusive Satin Black and are designed to showcase the Grand Cherokee SRT Night’s standard Brembo brakes, which give the car enviable stopping power. Unique interior appointments include the luxurious Black Laguna leather seats with black accent stitching, leather covered door armrests and centre console including light black chrome surround. A steering wheel bezel in anodized silver, a lit ‘SRT’ on the steering wheel DAB cover and ‘SRT’ on the door sill plates are also key features. Available colours for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Night are Brilliant Black and Brilliant White. The SRT Night is powered by the 6.4-litre V-8 petrol engine delivering 468 hp and 624 Nm of torque. The 2016 Grand Cherokee SRT Night comes as standard with exclusive ‘Performance Pages’ in the 8.4-inch UConnect Touchscreen (activated by an SRT button next to the Selec-Trac controls). These have been revised with an expanded array of performance timers and gauge readouts, while all-new drive modes allow owners to personalize their driving experience both on-road and on-track. In addition, standard launch control mimics a professional driver s inputs to optimise the Grand Cherokee SRT Night s performance by bringing engine, transmission, driveline, stability control, and suspension in line for a textbook launch.

Chrome King 1958 Chevrolet Corvette This is a very attractive Corvette from 1958 which has received some extensive restoration. The striking pale blue metallic fi nish sets off the chrome detailing perfectly, and there is plenty of it. From the front grille and headlight surrounds to two chrome strips on the boot which were only featured on the 1958 model. The faux-louvered hood was also unique to this model year. Underneath the bonnet sits a 4.6-litre smallblock fuel injected V8 with a manual gearbox. The ‘58 Corvette introduced the distinctive quad-headlamp design along with an update to the interior which brought with it a move from centralised gauges to a position in front of the driver along with a grab bar for passengers - in case you were to take advantage of the substantial capacity under the bonnet. Thankfully, seat belts were also introduced as a factory built part rather than a dealer extra for some extra assurance. This example comes complete with vented brakes, so you shouldn’t feel the need to often to brace yourself, but then this is a true American classic, so it’s always going to be looking for some fun.

SAVILLS

Clear As Crittall with Elliot Fensom, Negotiator, Savills Shoreditch

Trends in architecture and interior design are constantly evolving and working in the property industry gives us the pleasure of seeing this first hand. One interior trend that we have recently been noticing in increasing numbers of properties is the rise of Crittall, or steel, framed doors, windows and screens, seen even more now across London with interior feature walls and doors as well as the original external windows. Crittall windows were first developed back in the mid 1800s as a stronger and more robust alternative to wooden window frames, requiring comparatively less maintenance. Alongside this, manufacturers soon realised they offered the opportunity to install curved windows; something that could not be achieved with less

malleable wooden frames and their popularity grew considerably with the Art Deco and modernist architecture movements. Particularly popular as an industrial feature, as an easy and low maintenance solution for large windows, Crittall windows are often found today in warehouse conversions. My favourite example on the market at the moment are those in the fantastic duplex apartment on Epworth Street, Shoreditch. This is a truly unique conversion of a former Victorian printing Epworth Street, EC2 factory built in 1880 and converted in the 1990s. The windows, which cover almost an entire wall overlooking the peaceful courtyard garden, are a massive part of the character of the property and, extending down to the lower ground floor, ensure the downstairs reception room is not remotely compromised in terms of natural light and a spacious feel. Crittall windows have long been a strong part of the character of this area, particularly in Spitalfields due to its heavily industrial history. As well as their presence in smaller warehouse conversions, they can also be seen in some larger developments such as The Exchange Building, the former telephone exchange which has since been redeveloped into flats. Yet whilst in this area

COLUMN Bakery Place, SW11 the majority of these windows are predominantly the original frames, they’re also increasingly being installed new in properties elsewhere in London, such as in the newly refurbished penthouse flat in Elm Park Gardens, Chelsea, and the recently developed Bakery Place in Battersea, a Victorian bakery which presented a challenge to the developers to avoid dark internal rooms. To avoid this, they ‘borrowed’ natural light from adjoining rooms, with extensive use of Crittall framed glass walls inside the new apartments and mews houses in place of opaque walls to divide the rooms, allowing a light and airy feel which would otherwise have been impossible. There are numerous other benefits to using these features internally, too. They are very useful to increase the sense of space by creating better connectivity between rooms, while also allowing a ‘broken living’ look, by defining separate spaces while maintaining a feel of openness. Overall, they’re a relatively straightforward and adaptable way to add a statement architectural feature to a home, whether used for a shower cubicle, as room dividers, or simply in their original form as external windows. They’re also strong and durable, requiring far less maintenance than wooden window frames and many other internal architectural details. Finally, they’re also pretty easy to keep clean, which is a major bonus! Yet regardless of their many new uses, around Shoreditch they are a fantastic reminder of the area’s industrial history and rich character. Whatever a building’s new purpose, they enable us to remember its colourful past and heritage which, to many, makes them a feature worth protecting.

A Country Garden with Kate Gould

Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer with more than a decade’s hands-on experience transforming gardens of all sizes and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where she has been awarded three Gold medals. If you would like to know more about our services please contact Kate at kategouldgardens.com

A country house and garden with its heart set firmly in the town - this sleek space combines topiary plants and trees for form and structure, complimented by softer plants adding subtle hints of purple and gold to the colour scheme. All season planting has been implemented as the garden is in use all year round. This is a garden set in a rural part of Hertfordshire, which the clients really wanted to make look like a town garden. They were extremely set on the idea of incorporating multiple levels into the plans. When I first went to see the house to get a feel for what they were hoping to achieve, I noticed that their dining table wasn’t actually near the house but instead down a small set of steps. They told me that they were hoping to enlarge this area and create different levels throughout the garden to add depth. In the early

planning stages there was originally talk of putting a conservatory on the side of the house which we did cater for in the plans - on one side of the garden now there is a square concreted base ready and waiting in case they do opt to build the conservatory and expand the property further. They felt that they wanted to include real lawn and a lot of structured formality to the garden. We felt the most effective way to accomplish this would be to use a combination of Cubed Pleached Hornbeams, lots of box hedging and a Roose in a raised bed for structural interest. The garden was already encircled by beautiful bricked walls all the way around which made a big difference. The clients did originally have a pair of really beautiful bay trees in the garden but the year we built the garden it had snowed so heavily

that both trees were lost! They had had them in the garden for all the years they’d been married so it was a real loss to both them and the garden. The floor areas have been laid with a combination of beautiful New sawn York-stone and traditional flint gravel giving the garden a contemporary yet rustic feel to it. A striking lead water feature was installed against one of the walls, adding the soothing sound of trickling water to the ambience of the garden. The lighting scheme in the garden was kept intentionally sparse so as to provide scope to add candle light into the mix when entertaining. One of the things that the clients really wanted when we were designing the garden was to increase their terrace/useable dining space. They are a family of four but regularly entertained family and friends and wanted to ensure they would have space to do this comfortably. A sunken dining area now leads off from the main terrace and provides an elegant, private area for the family to eat and socialise together and they can now seat at least ten around the table which they were really pleased with. The clients do have children and wanted it to be a familyfriendly area as the children are often out playing in the garden so everything has been kept as child friendly as possible. It is a space that is used all year around (weather permitting!) so when thinking of the planting scheme we had to ensure we used plants that would look good all year round whilst still being pretty low maintenance. All of this was taken into consideration at the design stage and as a result the garden is extremely easy to look after, the clients literally only need to go out a couple of times a year to tweak the irrigation system and it all stays looking fabulous.

JLL RESIDENTIAL

The City Reacts to Brexit Bernard Cully, Head of Sales in the City Neil Short, Associate Director of Lettings in the City, comments: “The lettings market throughout 2016 has been somewhat difficult in comparison to recent years but since the ‘Brexit’ result, demand has returned to ‘regular’ levels. Applicant registrations have increased by at least 50% over the last three weeks and stock is letting well. Despite this upturn in demand, tenant’s are still finding themselves in the rare position of having various options to choose from. However, looking back to when the EU referendum was announced towards the end of February, the market certainly seemed to change. Until then, it had been fairly active, with the exception of March which was unusually quiet and exacerbated by an early Easter. Demand in the market remained lower than usual throughout the spring period, which has slowly led to an oversupply in stock which we are now facing. Whether this was a direct affect of the impending referendum is difficult to say for sure, but it certainly feels that way. It’s difficult to say at this stage what the long term effects of ‘Brexit’ will be, given that the UK (one of the major economies) invoking article 50 is an unprecedented step. Short and medium-term I expect to see little impact. Demand has returned to a high level and I very much expect the current oversupply to have corrected itself by the end of September – the peak period in the lettings market. Until details of our renegotiation with the EU emerge (which is likely to be years as opposed to months), people will still need housing, professionals will still be relocating and London will still Neil Short have a fundamental shortage of supply.

The City residential market has seen a sustained level of demand following the Brexit referendum result. Initially there was a lot of apprehension but this has started to ease with buyers and sellers now coming back to the market. We had been experiencing somewhat of a slowdown prior to the referendum and in many cases there were large gaps between asking prices and offers. We are now seeing this gap close with vendors’ expectations aligning with buyers’ which is bringing more activity in the market. Brexit has opened up some extremely attractive investment opportunities across the City and East markets with some gross yields returning to levels of over 5%, and with an increase in the appetite for vendors to sell, it is certainly an exciting time for the opportune investor. The demand for housing in London continues to increase which should inevitably put upward pressure on rents and in turn, once confidence and certainty is restored, pricing. Therefore, Brexit could be viewed by many investors and homeowners as a time to take advantage of the opportunities available.”
