FROM THE EDITOR

Here we go again...The British ‘Summer’ has once again proved that you should never be expectant of fine weather and as such should carry a bag full of all-weather clothing with you at all times to ensure you are ready for any eventuality. Of course, the rumblings of an ‘Indian Summer’ are making the rounds, lets hope there is some substance to it this year. When all is said and done, there are still numerous fantastic spots across London that can be enjoyed whatever the weather. None more so than the impressive collection of Royal Parks spread far and wide around the capital. Every year, their programme of events and activities over the summer months offers up an array of things to get involved in from children’s educational days to exploration of the history behind some of London’s finest green spaces. We should all be proud of the expansive greenery on offer here and enjoy the many, varied areas around at every opportunity. Whether you decide to dine al fresco for lunch one day in the park or venture a little further afield for an after work

catch up with the added bonus of light exercise and beautiful scenery thrown in for free, there is a place for you to enjoy the greener side of London. For those looking to maximise your time spent in the great outdoors, why not move your gym session outside to soak up some fresh summer air. There are always numerous trainers seen torturing poor unsuspecting victims on the grassy stretches, but it is a great way to not only get outside, but also prepare your body for a time when the sun finally arrives - or you decide to go on your travels in search of it! Food, festivals and fun are the order of the month with events such as the Notting Hill Carnival spreading vibrancy and joy and BBC’s Good Food Festival ready to ply you with delicious treats helping you undo all of your hard training. If you haven’t managed to find the time to enjoy any of the events over previous weeks, maybe just make an effort to attend at least one this month to give yourself the necessary break required to maintain sanity. The Gin Festival at Tobacco Dock might help.

Get cultural in the Serpentine Pavilion Diébédo Francis Kéré, the award-winning architect from Gando, Burkina Faso, is the seventeenth architect to accept the Serpentine Galleries’ invitation to design a temporary Pavilion in its grounds in Kensington Gardens. Inspired by the tree that serves as a central meeting point for life in his home town of Gando, the architect has designed a Pavilion that seeks to connect its visitors to nature – and each other. An expansive roof, supported by a central steel framework, mimics a tree’s canopy, allowing air to circulate freely while offering shelter against London rain and summer heat. On selected Fridays, the Pavilion transforms into a site for encounters in art, cinema, theatre, performance and music for the Serpentine Galleries’ annual ‘Park Nights’ programme. Londinium 28th July - 29th October

The Romans built the city where London now stands, bridging the Thames and creating Londinium. From around AD 50 to 410, this was the largest city in Britannia and a vital international port. Londinium grew to become a thriving town bustling with traders and people from every corner of the empire. Celebrating this illustrious heritage, a season of events titled ‘Londinium’ is running until the 29 October. The programme is being run by the City of London following their hugely popular Great Fire 360 event last autumn, with a number of prestigious institutions hosting events including Museum of London, Shakespeare’s Globe and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Unearth the lost history and buried secrets of Roman London that lie beneath the City. Today, most of the remains of Londinium lie around 25ft below modern-day London, having survived 2,000 years of building, fires and bombing during the Second World War. Hidden beneath the streets and offices of the Square Mile are three unique landmarks which offer unparalleled insights into the lives and culture of our Roman ancestors. Explore London’s Roman baths, amphitheatre, Mithraeum and the Roman wall; and learn more about the history of London with a packed programme of interactive activities for all the family. From comedy tours around the city, to major spectacles such as The Gladiator Games, and Roman Wine Tasting.

The season is headlined by three spectacular live events. This month the Gladiator Games (25 - 28 August), will see battle commence once again in Guildhall Yard, London’s oldest entertainment venue and the site of London’s Roman Amphitheatre. During an epic clash of swords, shields and spears, the gladiators will fight for glory and try to convince both Emperor and audience to set them free. Other highlights include specially themed Film Screenings (7 - 15 August) and the Art and Archaeology in the Amphitheatre Family Fun Day (8 – 9 August). Notting Hill Carnival 27th - 28th August

Held every August Bank Holiday since 1966, the Notting Hill Carnival is the largest festival celebration of its kind in Europe. Each year the streets of West London are filled with the sounds and smells of this vibrant street party. Twenty miles of stunning colourful costumes surround over 40 static sound systems, hundreds of Caribbean food stalls, 40,000 volunteers and over 1 million carnival revellers. Starting life as a humble local festival set up by the West Indian community of the prestigious Notting Hill area, it has now become a full-blooded Caribbean carnival, attracting millions of visitors from all walks of life from all over the globe. Inspired by the Caribbean carnivals of the early 19th century, a particularly strong tradition in Trinidad, which were all about celebrating the abolition of slavery and the slave trade, the very first carnival was an attempt to showcase the steel band musicians who played in the Earls Court of London every weekend. When the bands paraded through the streets of Notting Hill, they drew black residents out on to the streets, reminding them of the Caribbean homes they had left behind. Having been forbidden to hold festivals of their own during

the period of slavery, residents took full advantage of the relative new freedoms the ending of slavery brought them. Dressing up in costumes that mimicked the European fashions of their former masters, even whitening their faces with flour or wearing white masks, they established a tradition that continues in the costume-making of today’s festivities. Traditionally, the celebrations get under way on the Saturday with the impressive steel band competition. Next up is Kid’s Day held on the Sunday, where prizes are awarded for the famed costumes of the event. On Bank Holiday Monday, the main parade takes place beginning on Great Western Road and winding its way along Chepstow Road, on to Westbourne Grove, and then Ladbroke Grove. In the evening, the floats leave the streets in procession, and revellers continue to party at one of the many after parties. Whether you go along for the food – the Carnival provides the perfect introduction to traditional Caribbean food including jerk chicken, rice and peas, patties, curries and fried plantain – or the music, the lively atmosphere is sure to have you returning year after year.

NEW CAVENDISH JEWELLERS

Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah

Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite Jewellery. Official agents for many of the world’s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on Diamonds & precious stones. Established in 1982, New Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.

The picturesque fishing port of Portofino, South east of Genoa is renowned for its views, celebrity visitors and super yachts that often moor in the harbour. Despite this, there is a refined elegance that draws visitors back and a charm that harks back to a bygone era. Certainly, IWC had this in mind when introducing the first Portofino model back in 1984. As brands were pushing boundaries in terms of shape and design, IWC retained the use of a round case, although slightly oversized for the time but added a running sub seconds dial and a moonphase. This particular model is well coveted amongst collectors and fans alike. The Pilot’s and Portugieser collections tend to take the limelight against their siblings to the point where for a short period, the Portofino selection did not even make it into the main consumer catalogue! The collection only consisted of a simple three hand model with date and its chronograph counterpart with day and date windows. The difficulty with simple dress watches is that the majority of brands have them and there really is not a drastic amount you can do to add anything different. After that it simply

comes down to brand appreciation and the little details that may attract a potential consumer over other similar watches. For these models, it is perhaps the applied numerals that catch the light beautifully or the proportions that deliver a good size and fit for almost every wrist. The fact the movements for this collection are modified by IWC rather then built in-house ensure the prices are kept respectable and the chronograph model with the very handy day and date function is particularly well positioned. As a gift or a first foray into the world of horology, one could do a lot worse than one of these Portofino watches. Though they still lay the foundation of the current Portofino collection, 2011 saw the introduction of the “hand-wound” models that really showcase what IWC can deliver. Almost a homage to the 1984 series, the hand-wound collection are offered in a larger 45mm diameter case size in steel, Rose Gold & White Gold. A sapphire caseback showcases IWC’s own movement executed entirely in-house and carrying eight days worth of power reserve once fully wound. This little detail in particular is quite enticing as the purveyor of such a watch will invariably have others and the bane to switch between watches is always having to set them up again! IWC have always been famous for their dials and given the size of the case, it provides the perfect palette to showcase this skill. Sunburst greys and anthracite versions sit alongside plain ivory offerings. The initial series was delivered with just a date and power reserve indicator shown in a delightful retrograde fashion. This particular feature has carried across all the models in the collection. Received to notable acclaim, the dial size then provided the perfect opportunity to add some functional complications but as is the way with IWC; elegance is the key with none of the added features taking away from the simple refinement of the watches. The day-date model as pictured is a great example of this style with an oversized double date window for super legibility coupled

New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF

WATCHES

with a day sub-dial. It is the attention to detail here that illustrates why this complication is not a hastily added feature but rather a thought out consideration. Specifically, day sub dials can look busy and fussy, often clumsy as a lot of information needs to be fitted into a small space. Here, IWC have actually used the days to create the sub dial thus eliminating any overlapping and providing a very easily readable function. For 2017, IWC have genuinely returned to the original and released an updated moonphase version (pictured). Using updated technology, the movement, domed sapphire glass and especially the moonphase are just beautifully executed. Today, the moonphase function is perhaps not functional at all but from an aesthetic point

of view, this model is gorgeous. The proportions and balance of the moonphase window on the dial work perfectly despite being asymmetrical. All of these models carry alligator straps made exclusively for IWC by luxury leather goods manufacturer, Santoni, with a distinctive orange base. The 45mm diameter can seem large but the curved case lugs hug the wrist nicely and the fact the sapphire glass pretty much covers the entire face means you do not end up with too much bulky case. The Portofino collection has risen from a necessary but somewhat unloved family into one of the stalwart models in IWC’s arsenal; a collection worthy of the name. Discover the entire Portofino collection in-store, online or via social media.

Face Mapping Masterclass with Nataliya Robinson If you are generally feeling under the weather and know that the skin on your face is not looking as healthy and glowing as it normally should, then it’s time to book yourself in for the new Face Mapping Masterclass with qualified skin therapist, ataliya Robinson. Based in a quiet part of exclusive Chelsea, the ataliya Robinson Skin Therapy clinic offers clients a superbly relaxing and comfortable environment in which to enjoy their chosen treatment. Equipped with the latest technology, ataliya believes in a natural, holistic approach to benefit the skin’s health rather than compromise it and her aim is to

provide advanced skincare treatments to help people who want healthy skin. This includes clients with problematic skin conditions and sun damage as well as minimising the signs of ageing and the early prevention of wrinkle formation. She believes good skin starts from the inside out and to boost your overall health as well as your skin condition, she discusses your whole health, current diet and lifestyle when carrying out a professional consultation. Once she understands all this and has done a detailed skin assessment, she is able to recommend the most suitable treatment programme tailored to your individual needs.

Nataliya Robinson Skin Therapy Clinic, 28 Bury Walk, London SW3 6QB

NATALIYA ROBINSON Having developed acne at a young age, atalya became determined to understand the skin and what it takes to achieve a healthy complexion. ow, with over fifteen years’ experience, she is a qualified beauty therapist and has completed a course on naturopathic nutrition and is also a qualified practitioner of Chinese medicine. She prides herself on the fact that all her treatments are based on proven scientific research and have been developed by leaders in professional skincare methods and products which have been personally tested by herself over many years. Each treatment helps to prevent and correct skin damage and is designed to enhance skin health. During the Face Mapping Masterclass, ataliya analyses the skin and refers to a special skin chart which maps out certain points all over your face and ears which show tell-tale signs that directly relate to your body health. For example, little spots above the eyebrows could suggest a problem with the gastro-intestinal tract and your stomach or intestines and pancreas. A small rash on the forehead can indicate toxins in the intestines from chronic constipation and spots near the eyebrows are a sign that the intestines are not working properly and can indicate chronic stress. Congestion on the bridge of the nose could signify chronic stress and/or liver problems caused by unhealthy food or alcohol. When the liver isn’t functioning properly, toxins that enter via the skin

can cause inflammation. Large or blocked pores on the nose can indicate a hormone imbalance. It can also signal that the wrong type of product is being used on the skin, or that make-up isn’t being removed properly. This can block the pores and increase sebum production. Spots on the sides of the nose may indicate a deficiency in vitamin B complex and amino-acids. Broken capillaries on the tip of the nose may indicate cardio-vascular problems and your eyes, lips, ears and chin tell their own story. ataliya likes to finish the treatment with a face massage using a cocktail of ingredients such as organic calendula flowers in coconut oil or organic sunflower oil which she makes herself in her own kitchen. There all sorts of fascinating things you can learn about the condition of your skin and the health of your body just by examining the points on your face. It’s an indication of how your lifestyle may have taken its toll but Face Mapping is a way of combatting this and with ataliya’s help you can start making the necessary adjustments for good health and beautiful skin. There is no doubt that this revolutionary new treatment will emotionally improve the way you feel about yourself and contribute to your entire inner and outer well-being. Treatments last approximately one hour and bookings are by appointment only.

BELMOND BRITISH PULLMAN used extensively by the British royal family, while others have carried famous faces including President de Gaulle and ikita Khrushchev. Interestingly two were also part of Winston Churchill’s funeral train. The oldest carriage, Ibis, dates back to 19 . While, others like Audrey and Vera, survived bomb damage during air-raids over London’s Victoria Station in 1940. Since making its first trip in 198 , the train has been lavishly and lovingly refurbished before taking passengers on the many excursions and weekend breaks, Belmond offers. Whether you know a train fanatic or want to celebrate a very special occasion, there is a journey for everyone making it truly an unforgettable experience. One journey in particular, The Golden Age of Travel By Steam is particularly glorious thanks to the spectacular use of the steam-hauled train. Beginning at London Victoria Stations, check-in is quick and guests are invited to take pictures of the majestic steam locomotive while it is stationary before boarding the famous British Pullman for a day out like no other. Belmond British Pullman works with the extraordinary “Tornado” locomotive on its steamhauled excursions and once onboard you are guided to your table, which is set with fine linen and bespoke tableware allowing you to take in your fine surroundings and really enjoy the sense of occasion and glamour the vintage carriages evoke. Beginning with a welcome champagne reception, your journey through the Surrey Hills begins with your dedicated steward taking care of all your needs. Soak in the changing views through the window while the deep plumes of steam trail through the sky behind you. The ‘Tornado’ train was built from scratch by a charitable trust, who in 1990, took the decision to build a brand-new Peppercorn A1 Pacific steam locomotive as no working example survived. After 19 years, in 008, o 01 3 Tornado moved under its own steam for the first time. Fitted with additional water capacity and the latest safety electronics, the engine is fully equipped for today’s mainline railway. Make sure you take the opportunity to have your picture taken in the driver’s seat and see the magical burning coal engine. During your time on board you can also read in depth about the

train’s illustrious history and the famous passengers who have been welcomed just as you were. After your canapes and champagne, lunch is served. Chosen by the Chef and with a keen focus on the seasons, you can expect dishes such as Carrot, turmeric and yellow split pea soup with watercress cr me fraiche and Welsh lamb rump with a lemon and thyme crust, minted crushed new potatoes, seasonal green vegetables, pepper and tomato caponata served with black pudding jus. There is also a sumptuous cheese course with favourites such as Somerset Brie and Stilton served with a variety of crackers, bread and chutney. Finally, dessert is served followed by Petit Fours with tea or coffee. The silver service ensures you are well looked after and dietary requirements are accommodated for if you inform them in advance when booking. Guests are also offered half a bottle of wine per person to enjoy with their meal. Many of the stewards have worked for Belmond for many years and are more than happy to go out of their way to ensure your every wish is catered for. All too quickly the 84-mile journey is over and you have returned back to London Victoria with an abundance of memories that will last a lifetime. The Golden Age of Travel By Steam. Lupita East Located within walking distance of the Tower of London and London Bridge on busy Commercial Street, Mexican taqueria Lupita East is packed with fresh ingredients and flavoursome Mexican favourites. The story of Lupita started 50 years ago, with El Farolito, a taquer a in a little corner of the then unknown Colonia Condesa, located just west of the historic centre of Mexico City. In 010, U ESCO declared Mexican Cuisine an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, making it one of the first world cuisines to receive such an honour. In that same year, and after half a century and becoming Mexico City’s leading taquería, the family behind El Farolito came to the UK and opened its doors in London as Lupita. Today, Lupita East is the third branch for the brand after their successful Soho and Kensington sites, and guests are invited to tuck into tacos, quesadillas and a whole lot more from the wide and varied menu which specialises in the most enduring staples of Mexican cuisine. Incredibly well-priced for the quality, the menu starts with a range of small plates that are perfect recreations of the famous street food that is served all over Mexico from carts and trucks. Highlights include Chicharron de ueso y Guacamole – crispy rolled cheese served with fresh guacamole and Tuna Tostadas topped with homemade chipotle mayo, avocado and crispy fried leeks. Then moving on to the mains, it’s hard to choose thanks to an array of Mexican classics like Tacos, Tortas, Burritos and uesadillas all stuffed with a range of chorizo, pork, steak and grilled chicken. The Campechano is a classic taco with grilled steak, Mexican Chorizo and port chicharron and the Chicken

Tinga quesadillas are wonderfully spicy and bursting with flavour thanks to the chipotle chilli and secret blend of spices. Elsewhere on the menu and for something a little different the Gringa is a classic Mexican dish using three flour tortillas as a base with melted cheese and your choice of Chicken or Pork al Pastor topped with fresh pineapple, coriander and onions. Enjoy it with the opalitos Salad topped with cactus, tomato, onion and crumbled cheese. Everything on the menu is made from the freshest and finest available produce and ingredients, so you won’t be disappointed whatever you choose. Lupita has even received recognition from both LUKAS and Zagat for being the best Mexican restaurant in London! And after you’ve eaten there, you’ll certainly see why. Wash it all down with a cocktail or refreshing Mexican beer while enjoying the vibrant décor and traditional music. A true feast for all the senses.

O p e ra T a vern Based in the heart of theatreland, and part of the Salt Yard Group, Opera Tavern is a stunning two-storey bar and restaurant serving a host of Italian and Spanish inspired small plates, charcuterie and cheeses. Formerly a pub, with a long bar and tables on the ground floor and an atmospheric dining room - thanks to lowlighting and candles - on the upper level, the popular restaurant is now offering seasonal dishes for the summer months making this the perfect location to catch up with friends or for a pre-theatre meal. From Squid Ink Arancini with Chili Aioli and Chives and

Swordfish Carpaccio with Pink Peppercorn Dressing, Smoked Almonds and Pea Shoots to tasty Grilled Beef Bavette with Oyster Mushrooms, Jersey Royal Potatoes, Salsa Verde and Watercress and Smoked Burrata with Datterini Tomatoes, Basil Emulsion and Black Olive Ciabatta the restaurant offers a wide range of dishes including regular specials as well. Other menu highlights - as there are many - include Courgette flowers, deep-fried with goat’s cheese and drizzled with honey Roasted Tiger Prawns with Piquillo and Prawns Bisque, Grilled Sourdough and Lardo and Grilled Pork Rib-Eye with Roasted Garlic Puree, Spring Onions, Walnut Butter and Crispy Shallots. We’re told the Mini Ib rico Pork and Foie Gras Burger remain one of the restaurant’s most popular bar snacks too. The wine list, as you would imagine, boasts a range of fantastic Spanish and Italian wines all varying in price and staff are only too happy to let you taste first and offer knowledgeable suggestions. Moving on to dessert and sweet tooths will rejoice at the likes of Spiced Coffee and Walnut Tart with Plum Pur e, Candied Walnuts and P Vanilla Mascarpone and Frangelico Chocolate Mousse with Stracciatella Ice Cream, White Chocolate and Amaretti Crumble. There is even a choice of Spanish and Italian cheeses. With so many fantastic dishes, it’s not hard to see why Opera Tavern remains one of London’s best tapas restaurants.

If you work, live or indeed play in the City, and even if you don’t but are looking for something a little different, it is certainly worth taking a look. Just try and catch the sun to enjoy the space to its full potential.

Summer at Tom’s Kitchen The Tom’s Kitchen restaurants across London have launched a range of wonderful new summer menus, using the finest seasonal ingredients to create contemporary British dishes. With locations in Chelsea, Canary Wharf, St Katharine Docks and Somerset House, the menus offer a large variety of vegetarian and gluten free dishes as well as sustainable produce. Starters on the summery menu include Chilled pea soup with fresh peas, lemon, cr me fraiche and olives and Dressed Devonshire Crab on Toast with apple, pickled shallots, avocado, chives. While main courses offer Courgette, dukkha, fennel and turmeric salad with turmeric and saffron dressing Roast fillet of Cornish trout with parsley and lettuce sauce and grilled gem salad and Grilled baby spatchcock chicken with spelt and quinoa salad, avocado, and charred broccoli. Of course, the menu at each of the restaurants still offers the many favourites Tom’s Kitchen has become renowned for such as the deliciously tempting Tru e Macaroni Cheese Steak Tartare Tom’s Kitchen Burger with bacon and triple cooked chips and Chicken Schnitzel with cherry tomato sauce, confit cherry tomatoes, and basil oil. Also highly recommended, is the Roast Fillet of Sea Bream served with olives on a braised chicory & heritage tomato salad, olives.

For dessert, the beautifully light and refreshing Raspberry millefeuille with raspberry sorbet is just one of the highlights as well as the indulgent Peach Melba Sundae, that is perfect for sharing. While there are many locations, we are slightly biased to the St Katharine Docks branch. With a beautiful view over the docks and its many yachts in Central London’s only marina, the site has a glass fa ade that opens up to the waterfront making it the perfect spot for lunch in the summer months where you can watch the world go by.

COCKTAIL COLUMN

Calabrese’s Cocktails with Gerry Calabrese

East End drinks maverick Gerry Calabrese has built a reputation as one of the greats in London’s bar scene. From bartending in top London venues such as Lab, Dust, and Sex in the City he went on in 2008 to launch his own multi award winning East End bar, The Hoxton Pony followed by most recently in 2016 Wringer and Mangle situated in the neighbouring London Fields, to much critical acclaim. His pedigree has also seen him act as a drinks columnist as well as consultant and event planner for numerous high profile private clients including iles Deacon, warovs i, eroni Nastro urro, Channel , and ulberry.

It’s summertime in London town and with the rarity of sunshine in the capital we’re never quite truly prepared for it and often times treat each day as if we’re all on holiday, flocking to the parks and bars to enjoy the warmth with friends. Since the 19 0’s when Mable Stegner popularised the electric blender as the perfect tool for making ice cold drinks at home in an instant, bars all over the world have been battling heat waves one frozen drink at a time. By far the most popular frozen drinks are the frozen Margarita and the frozen Daiquiri, often blended with fruits and berries such as strawberry, raspberry, banana and mango. Over the years, the bar industry has delivered some weird and wonderful variations of blended drinks, most notably the Pina Colada and the Miami Vice (which is essentially just a frozen strawberry Daiquiri and a Pina Colada layered over each other in a Hurricane Glass). While these drinks have served us all very well for the past 60 odd years, bartenders are a fidgety bunch who can’t help but try to discover and create new ways of mixing drinks, and in recent years the trend has been to revisit the past to see what we’ve already forgotten about and to bring it back to life, one such drink the Slush Puppy.

Partially due to the inconvenience of having to clean out a blender repeatedly on a busy weekend, some clever bartenders managed to modify an old soft serve ice cream maker to be able to continuously serve perfectly blended Margaritas on tap. These days we are very lucky to be in the new Golden Age of cocktails and people are turning all manner of cocktails into frozen varieties, such as the Corpse Reviver Number Blue which is a twist on the Corpse Reviver #2 but with Blue Curacao and our very own Gina Colada, which a simple summertime twist on the Pina Colada, using the coconut and grapefruit flavoured Hoxton Gin, fresh pineapple juice, homemade sugar syrup and coconut cream, all blended in a repurposed slushy machine, available at Wringer Mangle London Fields, The Magic Roundabout Old Street and Pleased To Meet ou ewcastle among others. The appeal of a frozen cocktail isn’t just in its ability to instantly cool you down, it’s the nostalgia that harks back to the Slush Puppies of our youths, seeing those slushy machines and immediately feeling compelled to have a pop at a beverage that’s literally ice cold, delicious and fun. This summer, the frozen cocktail reigns supreme but it most definitely isn’t just a fad, they are here to stay, just as long as the sun does too.

“the experience” Launched in November 2016, Vineet Bhatia London (VBL) is the progressive Indian restaurant that takes diners on a culinary exploration of India, shaped by the imagination and unique experience of Michelin-starred chef, Vineet Bhatia. Forever evolving, the restaurant has now launched their new Experience Menu, a tasting menu that melds flavours from across the regions of India with Vineet’s signature twists in the form of European ingredients and refined presentation.

VBL is the first Indian restaurant to eschew the traditional A La Carte offering, serving only their signature 11 course Experience Menu. Tripadvisor review June 2017 ‘From start to finish this was an experience that was unique. I have never tasted such a varied selection of food that was for different reasons fantastic in taste and presentation. Factor in the knowledgeable, courteous staff and I must say this restaurant ticks all the boxes.’ Vineet Bhatia, 10 Lincoln Place, Chelsea, London SW3 2TS | 020 7225 1881

Bursting with power, poise and an aesthetic to match, Audi’s RS6 is the ultimate all-rounder. Based around the A6 Avant architecture - meaning there is plenty of room for the family, the pets and the kitchen sink - the RS might not be at the top of your list when you think about sports cars. However the term don’t judge a book by its cover’ couldn’t be more apt where this is concerned. Hiding a cool 4.0-litre V8 under the bonnet and a whole host of impressively engineered parts ensuring maximum use of the resulting 0 PS and 00 m of torque, this is no slouch on the road. Boasting a zero to sixty-two time of just under 4 seconds and a top speed of 190mph depending on the performance options you choose , you will give most other performance cars on public roads a run for their money. Throw in to the mix the fact that you can buy one for less than 8 ,000 and you start to wonder if there is anything this car doesn’t offer. ext on the list would most certainly be efficiency. With such impressive performance figures, there is rarely much time to think about fuel economy and impact on the environment and as a result, efficiency is often compromised. ot here. Audi have managed to utilise their family’s’ help, featuring an advanced displacement shut-off technology with its origins in the heart of British motoring craft, the Bentley factory. What this means for the RS is a literal 4-cylinder engine when running under partial load, and consequently a dramatic improvement in economy over a standard V8 block. This cylinder-on-demand technology amongst other clever additions makes for a respectable combined fuel economy of 4. mpg and an emissions figure of 3g km - a thing of dreams for most V8 sports cars. eedless to say there is no denying the cars credentials, but what does that mean for real world situations? Whether you are taking the family away, commuting to work or heading to the local circuit for a track day, this car will happily oblige. Switch the Audi Drive Select’ from comfort to dynamic and the car transforms in an instant from comfortable family runaround to all-out high performance sports car. With options including RS sport suspension plus with dynamic ride control, dynamic steering and carbon-fibre ceramic brake discs, you can enhance the performance even further. Stiffening the ride to the extreme, this is not a setting that you will want to use on long journeys, but it will do more than enough to fill you with confidence on the road or track when traveling through corners. This dynamic ride control adds a special shock absorber system that works to counteract pitch and body roll adding to the cars stability through even the most demanding corners. It also benefits from an optional sports differential that further builds on the already impressive quattro all-wheel drive system, redirecting power to the outer wheel when cornering to ensure the car stays true to the direction of travel. If you chose to bolster your RS6 with every option available, there would be absolutely no need to adapt the car with the potential exception of a roll cage to compete in a spot of casual track racing. The beauty of this car is that it’s not all about the performance. Styled to the max, this is one of the most stunning estate cars you will ever come across. Again, there are plenty of options to add audi.co.uk

AUDI RS6 AVANT

an individual touch such as carbon fibre diffusers and custom colour choices, but the standard’ aesthetics are more than sufficient to turn heads - of course, the deep V8 rumble from the sports exhaust system helps. Sleek lighting and clean lines make for an imposing stance on the road and the wide, low profile of the car only adds to its aggressive appeal. The large and unmistakably Audi front grille shouts I’m going to eat you’ as it rapidly approaches any car from behind and dramatically improves the chances of other road users actually adhereing to road laws and moving out of any lane they may happen to be sitting in. Inside, the carbon fibre adorned dash, inserts and console add to the sporty feel along with the figure hugging sports seats that will keep you securely in place even when travelling through corners at ridiculous speeds. The simple, business-like interface remains, allowing quick and easy alterations to everything from the radio channel to the stiffness of the suspension, but is also a good demonstration of the difference between a 00k sports car and an 80k one. evertheless, the finish is, as always excellent, with contrast stiching across every conceivable section of connected leather and a chunky, stiff, flat-bottom sports steering wheel to complete the look. Connectivity is and has been a key feature in Audi’s development and audi.co.uk

the infotainment system remains one of the easiest to use despite relying heavily on buttons as opposed to the larger touch screen examples we are now seeing reach the market thanks to Tesla breaking the mould. Regardless of the more basic set up, everything you could imagine is avaialble through the system from the Audi drive select function to checking tyre pressures and editing your phonebook. This car is not one thing or another, it is everything wrapped up into a handy - not so little - package that delivers on so many fronts. If you are in the market for a sports car under 100,000, there are of course numerous options, but this will compete with the best in terms of performance. If you are looking for a premium estate under 100,000, there are equally many options, but this will compete with the best in terms of space and accessibility. ou can throw any market sector at this car and it will compete in some respect, some more than others, but when you put everything together, there are very few cars that can do it all. ou might need to raise the suspension a little if you are planning on competing in the off-road arena though, the low, performance enhancing profile won’t fair too well over rough terrain. The ultimate multi-use machine? It certainly comes close, but there’s only one way to find out and that’s by trying it for yourself. Head over to your nearest dealer and hope they’ve got one for you enjoy.

Retro American Muscle 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe

OUT OF THIS WORLD

Iconic is an understatement when it comes to the 19 0’s Ford Mustang. Featured in Hollywood blockbusters and award-winning tv series alike, the Mustang brought with it a new age of style and substance. A true American muscle car with styling to match, the Ford Mustang was something to behold. This example from 19 has come a long way since its very early beginnings. Rolling off of the production line just a year after the car was delivered to its first customers. Packed with a 4. -litre Windsor V8 under the bonnet, the 19 Ford Mustang was far from an all-talk, no-action party piece. It paved the way for one of the most successful and iconic cars in motoring history which continues to this day. Finished in Sherwood Green coachwork complete with gold stripes and a stunning contrast magnolia interior, this Mustang is one you don’t want to miss. The manual gearbox should keep you more than entertained too, as long as you can handle the left-hand-drive. This car is in a very presentable condition with a service file showing recent works carried out and will turn heads in any corner. Perfect as a project car and equally as a weekend run around. Whatever your requirements, there is no getting away from the opportunity to own an original 19 Ford Mustang.

Price on Application and Setting the Guide Price Right with Robin Chatwin, Head of South West London Residential The best advice is to listen to your agent and be realistic. An agents primary goal is to achieve the best possible price for the house they are selling and being as realistic as possible from the start of the marketing process will secure maximum interest in your property from the offset. In some cases, due to the demand and realistic level of values, sales have exceeded expectation.

Although it is now much less common, there are many reasons why sellers still choose to market their property as ‘price on application’. For the majority, they are looking for privacy, an issue which has become increasingly prevalent in recent years as our digital footprints grow. However, generally when a property is marketed as POA it tends not to generate as much interest as those with a public price tag. These days most property searches start online with savvy buyers researching location, area, schools and values without leaving their living room. Having to find out separately if they can afford a property tends to be a turn-off. And, rightly or not, the term also seems to suggest to buyers that the property is out of their price range; with POA having long been associated with the most high-end homes, you could be unintentionally putting buyers off. Therefore, marketing your property with a visible price tag is advisable but only if the price is right. At the minute we are seeing over 0 per cent of our buyers in London only offering once on a property, and they aren’t coming back. Buyers have become more discerning and are looking for accurately priced, best-in-class properties in the best addresses. Current market conditions mean it’s no surprise that buyers are being this astute. By the end of March 2017 prices in the prime London market had fallen by an average of 6.1 per cent from their 2014 peak, as the market continues to be sensitive to sentiment in uncertain times. Following the ambiguity brought about by Brexit, multiple general elections, stamp duty changes and tightened mortgage regulations, asking over the odds for your home is a passion-killer for buyers. However, even during these times of uncertainty there are still reasons to buy, not least the historically low interest rates and a variety of choice for buyers. How the Overseas Investment Changed the Mindset of the UK Property Buyer with Scott Ayliffe, LiFE Residential Director of Sales and Marketing

At LiFE Residential we take care of more than 4,000 properties for our landlords and having 13 offices covering all London’s postcodes gives us a real-time overview of the property market. The mindset of the London property buyer has changed over the last 20 years, partly due to overseas investment purchasers. Selling off-plan to the UK has never been easy as buyers favoured older properties. However, with the introduction of Energy Performance Certificates, people became more socially aware of the cost of maintaining these properties but with space in London becoming scarcer, the only way was up! Overseas buyers already recognised this as the norm where the higher you are, the more impressive your outlook on LiFE. With little restriction on purchases, a robust economy and a safe government, the UK was a safe-haven for International investors with UK buyers often missing out. The introduction of the tax changes last year and the consistent change from governments trying to control the property market proved to be internally damaging causing an inevitable slowdown in international activity. However, prices adjusted to a more sustainable level and with low mortgage rates, the UK buyer has been allowed to catch up and see the value in new-builds. Now more than 60% of our sales are to UK purchasers buying off-plan. We are also seeing the return of overseas investors from the global market and, based on facts, they continue to favour the UK. London remains safe and will continue to be a great place to invest your money. Now is the time to buy.

Why London’s the Place to Invest with Nick Crawford, LBS Properties

London is an outward-looking, global city. Its position as the leading international financial center, a hub for culture and the arts and home to several world-renowned universities is unparalleled. This means that people come to London and invest in London for a variety of different reasons, a strength that is very difficult for other markets to replicate. International investment in London’s housing market has played a key enabling role for many years and continues to do so today. We are in an environment of political change following Britain’s decision to leave the EU, and this naturally brings with it some economic uncertainty in the short and medium term. This uncertainty ebbs and flows with the news cycle and can impact confidence and investment sentiment. The international market often has the ability to take a step back from the dayto-day political gyrations, and focus on London’s many strengths, which will undoubtedly endure in the long term. At LBS Properties, we focus on the attributes that drive long-term value for the people who buy in our developments. We work with the leading architects to deliver buildings of architectural merit. We develop in locations that benefit from good connectivity, or which will benefit from improved connectivity with new infrastructure. And finally we develop in locations that benefit from excellent amenities. A great example of this is The Madison, located a short walk from the centre of Canary Wharf. Designed by world-renowned Make Architects, The Madison will be a striking addition to London’s skyline. The arrival of Crossrail in 2018 will make Canary Wharf one of the best-connected areas of London, with fast direct access to the City of London, the West End and Heathrow airport. And finally, Canary Wharf is fast becoming a great lifestyle destination, with a retail and restaurant offering to match anywhere in London.

How often do people move property in the local area? Time between moves (years)

I recently learned from national census figures that more than six-million people move home every year. I think these numbers reveal we are changing homes at a faster rate than ever before with people in the Southern half of the country the most frequent movers. Conversely, those living in the North East, North West and Wales move home less frequently than anyone else in the UK. I crunched some numbers and found the average amount of time someone lives in their property in E14 is 8 years. This compares with 22 years in the region and 19 years nationally. I've calculated this by calculating turnover as a percentage of stock and estimating how long it would take for everyone to move house at least once in the area.

If people are changing their home more often, vendors will benefit from a busier market with more demand. It was once the case that only younger people would be more likely to move around, especially live-in couples, but now we are seeing a trend where people of all ages are changing their home at a more frequent rate. Whether it is because people have more money, have benefited from the rise in house prices, or prefer a change of scenery, the rate at which people are moving homes is rising. Sleek and Relaxed River Terrace with Kate Gould

A large and very exposed roof terrace with enviable river views from the rear and side of the property, this space was originally a blank canvas with very little out there other than the decking and an existing electric barbeque. The client’s brief for the design was to create a colourful and contemporary space for relaxation and

entertaining incorporating separate lounge and dining areas, as well as more private ‘breakfast areas’ overlooking the river. An existing boundary fence was softened and minimised with the use of Olive trees and Lavender placed in planters against it whilst the existing barbecue was built into an fully bespoke outdoor kitchen unit. The granite topped kitchen area features multiple cupboards for storage, a Blastcool fridge, a and a decorative log store on the reverse. Four Roshults outdoor stools sit at the far end of the kitchen unit creating an additional seating area for drinks or nibbles. A ceramic topped extendable Fischer Mobel dining table designed to seat twelve sits in the middle ‘dining’ section of the terrace shaded by a fully automated blue retractable awning for the fierce summer afternoons. Overlooking the river in the ‘lounge’ area sit two large L shaped Dedon Carbon Slimline sofas accessorised with bright blue and orange outdoor cushions. Two matching Dedon side tables and a large coffee table complete the set whilst bespoke powder coated

planters enclose the area in a sea of lavender creating a sense of privacy from passers by below. On the other side of the terrace, overlooking the river, nestle two secluded ‘breakfast areas’. Although both spots provide seating for two people, the space at the far end also encapsulates a large teak storage console and a bespoke powder coated orange metal cube to house the client’s Big Green Egg barbecue for a more intimate cooking and dining experience. Finally, the white walls of the property were wired and planted with climbing Trachelospermum jasminoides for scent and greenery whilst Buxus sempervirens is used in stone coloured planters to provide year round structure to the scheme. Lavender is used throughout the terrace and adds a vibrant burst of colour and scent whilst keeping the bees in business. At dusk, LED Uplighters highlight key plants adding drama whilst canister lights mounted to the exterior of the doorways provides functional lighting for entertaining and security purposes.
