WATCHES

The Art of Engineering

Glashütte Original release the Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition with a stunning skeletonised dial to delve deep into the movement within.

The latest addition to the Senator Excellence family reveals the beauty and refined character of the movement to its full extent. From the moment it was launched in 2016, the innovative Calibre 36 set new standards in terms of precision, stability, running time and beauty. Now, the new special edition places this incredible piece of craftsmenship at the heart both mechanics and design. Limited to 100 pieces, the new model lends the classic perpetual calendar a contemporary appearance. Skeletonising - the cutting of delicate openings in individual components - has long been a fixture of the repertoire of a master watchmaker. Now Glashütte Original has made use of this technique to implement a fresh, modern design. Finely cut out from within the generous dimensions of the matte grey dial ring are the panorama date, moon phase, weekday, month and leap year displays, each accented discreetly with a stepped frame. The central cut-out shifts the centre of attention to the technical aspects of the galvanic grey module cover plate, whose openings reveal the interplay of the calendar discs. An elaborate guilloche decoration adorns the movement’s cover plate, its sweeping lines broken only by individual red jewels. The guilloche decoration is crafted by hand in the watchmaker’s own dial manufactory in Pforzheim. There is good reason to consider the perpetual calendar one of the most challenging complications in the art of watchmaking. Thanks to its sophisticated mechanism it displays, along with hours, minutes and seconds, the day of the week, month, moon phase and leap year - all the while taking the lengths of the different

months into account. In theory, at least, no manual correction will be required until the year 2100. The Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar - Limited Edition is anchored firmly in the 21st century in terms of colour too. Set within a 42 mm white gold case, the matte grey dial ring with rhodium plated and polished index appliques and the galvanic grey module cover encounter blue accents. Among the latter are the dark blue Louisiana alligator leather strap, traditional blued hands, the moon phase display’s galvanic blue night sky, along with the printed blue minute numerals on the railroad chapter ring, and the leap year indicator. Through the sapphire crystal on the back of the watch, one can observe the finely finished 36-02 automatic movement, which features a power reserve of at least 100 hours.

Celebrating 100 years of the Royal Air Force

Royal appointed artisit, Jeremy Houghton, has paid incredible tribute to two of the last remaining Spitfire pilots who sadly passed away within a week of each other. Jeremy, who sketched the gentlemen a mere three months ago for his famed piece ‘The Last of the Few’, said sketching both Geoffery Wellum and Tom Neil was an absolute privilege. “I was terribly sad to hear of the passing of both Geoffrey Wellum and Tom Neil. It was an immense privilege to meet them both earlier this year and I feel very humbled to have spent time in their company. What has struck me during the time I spent with these men is how incredibly humble they were. They saw themselves as lucky rather than heroes, but history proves they are very much the latter. My Last of the Few painting very much focuses on the heavens acknowledging the young airmen who didn’t fly home and now Geoffrey and Tom are reunited with their fallen friends and it is our duty to never forget their service and sacrifice on our behalf. I feel incredibly honoured to have created a piece to make sure their legacy and story lives on forever.” “I sketched Geoffrey in his favourite chair in his small Cornish house, it was humbling to hear some of the

stories from his wartime journey,” explained Jeremy. “The day I drove to lands end to visit Geoffrey a terrible storm was blowing in from the Atlantic. I asked him if he flew his spitfire in these conditions, to which he replied ‘all the time!’. No other account of flying in the Battle of Britain has been articulated as well as Geoffrey’s in his book ‘first light’. I very much got the sense that the weight of these memories lived with him to the end.” ‘The Last of the Few’ is currently on online auction where all proceeds will go to raise money for the RAF Air Cadets through the Coachmaker’s Charitable Trust. To place a bid or find out more, contact Jeremy or visit the website using the details below. Breitling too have unveiled a number of special pieces created to celebrate the RAF’s rich history. Offering four limited edition models, each available in 100 pieces with the exception of the ultra-limited Navitimer 1 B01 Chronograph 46 which is available in just 25 pieces. The history between Breitling and the RAF dates back to the late 1930’s when their flight

chronographs were installed in RAF aircraft. To this day, Breitling continues to supply the personnel of the Royal Air Force with its timepieces. From the elite display teams including the Royal Air Force Aerobatics Team The Red Arrows, through to customised Squadron Watches developed alongside the teams themselves. The RAFl00 partnership signals a new milestone in Breitling’s relationship with the Royal Air Force, and the Limited Edition Series represents the perfect physical embodiment of this partnership - now available to the public for the first time. Each timepiece from the Series will be sold with a Limited Edition print from a work entitled ‘A century of Aircraft Propellers’ commissioned by Breitling to renowned contemporary aviation artist David Bent with each print framed, numbered and signed by the artist. Purchasers of timepieces from the RAF100 Series will also go into a competition draw to win a day with the Royal Air Force Aerobatics Team The Red Arrows at their

home RAF Scompton, or one of four flights with the legendary Breitling Jet Team. The RAF100 Navitimer Limited Edition Number 1/25 will be auctioned at the RAF100 RAF Benevolent Fund commemorative Gala Dinner on 10th October 2018, to benefit the RAF100 Appeal. A perfect accompaniment to your unique timepiece and a fitting piece of British craftsmenship, Globe-Trotter have launched the RAF100 Collection. The striking new collection is an innovative and unique range of luggage, designed to accompany RAF pilots on mission flights and training. Marking a departure from GlobeTrotter’s conventional design, the case features a robust aluminium shell on their iconic vulcanised fibreboard and has been specially designed to open lengthways, enabling you to easily reach inside the case while it is upright. Adorning the surface of each case, two lines of rivets echo the design of the motifs seen on RAF aircraft, and the design is completed with the iconic RAF heraldic insignia. Stunning in design and expertly hand crafted in Hertfordshire, this is luggage on another level that will not only warrant respectful interest, but a life of exploration that will continue for many years.

NEW CAVENDISH JEWELLERS

Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah

Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite Jewellery. Official agents for many of the world’s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on Diamonds & precious stones. Established in 1982, New Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.

In last month’s article we highlighted the value created by history for vintage watches. This month, the focus will be on a company that is perhaps the single most important in laying the foundation for how we view luxury brands today. Mapping out a modern high end marque is quite a dramatic process as it should include an international retail network that is a perfect representation of the brand’s values, a respective after-sales ability mirroring the front end service alongside a fire and fury wielding sales and marketing team continuously working to maintain the visibility of the brand in public consciousness. Very few companies get every element of this correct and even less can lay claim to genuinely helping forge this criterion. Montres Breguet can lay true claim to being at the forefront of watchmaking in general as an industry and also lightyears ahead of their peers in terms of forethought and marketing. Abraham Louis Breguet was born in the cradle of watchmaking, Neuchatel, but spent his most productive years in Paris. An exceptionally skilled watchmaker, his innovations and inventions revolutionised not only the mechanics of watchmaking but also the art of the industry. His most complex invention was famously the Tourbillon (named as such given it looked like a whirlpool or whirlwind when working), which is a device that sits within the movement helping to regulate the deviation caused by gravity given pocket watches at the time usually sat only in one position. Breguet created many other small but hugely significant inventions to watch movements that are used across the industry today. It cannot be stated highly enough his contribution to the mechanical side of watchmaking. However, something Breguet managed to do that is perhaps more in line with modern brands was a type of marketing. Breguet’s pocket watches were the toast of the courts of Europe, enjoying demand from Kings, Queens, noblemen and notable historical figures like Winston Churchill and Napoleon Bonaparte.

In fact, it was Bonaparte’s Sister, Caroline Murat, the then Queen of Naples for whom the first ever wrist watch was made; this model is a staple of the modern Breguet collection, aptly named the Reine De Naples and distinctive in its oval case. Breguet created arguably the most valuable watch in history for Marie Antoinette, which was sadly finished after her death but carried the single most complications for a pocket watch at that time. It was stolen in 1985 in Jerusalem then resurfaced in the early 2000’s…but that caper is a tale for another time, yet the association with royalty and creditable characters created a mystique that watches alone cannot do. As with all brands, the level of investment and continued research, development and support are incredibly difficult to manage and finance. Eventually Montres Breguet fell into the hands of Investcorp who understood the value of luxury brands

New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF

WATCHES but not how to manage them. This led to a period of inactivity that could have spelt disaster for the company. Their saving grace came in the form of Nicolas G. Hayek and his Swatch Group. Mr. Hayek, often credited with revitalising an industry staggering from the shock of the Quartz revolution, understood the value of both Montres Breguet and Lemania, also then under the fold of Investcorp. Lemania are synonymous with arguably one the most beautiful chronograph movements ever made. The Swatch Group made Breguet the pinnacle of their high watch making stable and rebuilt the collections from Breguet’s existing heritage. There will always be some contention claiming Montres Breguet to now be a high end Swatch watch. If that means a sustainable, well priced business model that delivers innovation and quality for the public, then so be it! The current collection houses tributes to the skeletonised Souscription pocket watches in the Tradition family, the above mentioned Reine de Naples models, the Marine Collection that pays homage to the Breguet Marine Chronometers that aided

manipulating enamel. Breguet’s enamel work is both breathtaking but also distinctively innovative as can be seen in the 7147 reference (pictured) where the dial is given a slight recess for the sub seconds. The non enamel dials all carry various Guilloche finishes, the majority including a minimum of three different designs on the same dial, all done by hand! This is one of the critical hallmarks of Breguet in that the watch and more notably the dial became more than just functional, rather pieces of art and design in their own right. In keeping with Breguet’s tradition, the Swatch Group has provided the playground with which to develop the movements further. Breguet’s watchmaking now uses silicon to provide greater durability and resistance against magnetic fields while a recent development has utilised magnetic pivots to provide incredible shock resistance for the incredibly complex mechanical instruments. Respectively, the addition of new materials and mechanical ideas has seen Breguet even manage to increase the frequency of the movement to 10Hz. This frequency is what dictated the accuracy of a timepiece, and naturally, the higher the frequency, the more accurate but with that increased activity, more exertion is applied to the movement. By incorporating silicon and managing how the energy is dispersed, the new movement can provide this increased accuracy without any undue side effects! If architected and designers are lauded over time for their contributions to society, Breguet must fall within this category. He fulfilled two disciplines, not just innovating in both but laying a foundation for decades to come in how to build both your design style and your brand. Irrelevant of where the brand is housed, the name carries genuine weight and the design, which can be polarising at times still enjoys a loyal and hardy fan base. As the new Marine collection aims to capture a new demographic of fans, the most Classique Breguet will always be in style. New Cavendish Jewellers is an authorised retailer for Breguet timepieces, we invite you to visit our Boutique and discover these wonderful timepieces for yourself.

ships to navigate their courses as well as the Type XX selection that offer a modern interpretation of Breguet’s military watches. We will focus here on the Classique collection that showcases the real DNA of Breguet in terms of the style, innovation and flair. Explicitly offered in precious metals and round cases, the Classique pillar begins at simple two hand models to incredibly complicated high watchmaking models housing Tourbillons and Perpetual Calendars. These models all enjoy the hallmark of Breguet’s inimitable style using blued Breguet hands and where possible, the highly distinctive Breguet numerals. A notable part of the collection is the Grand Feu enamel dials that perhaps highlight the idea best of incredible style though simplicity. Many brands may wish to create this stark white look using lacquered dials to add a little strength given the fragility and difficulty in 020 7487 5628 | newcavendishjewellers.com

Freelancer Skeleton After launching its first in-house movement, born from the long term collaboration with Swiss movement manufacturer Sellita in 2017, Raymond Weil have unveiled the new and exclusive Calibre RW1212 Skeleton indicating their desire to keep pushing boundaries. Continuing on their innovation pathway by developing the inhouse designed movement, the new sleek skeleton Freelancer offers a window on the inner workings of this ever-evolving movement. Featuring an open-worked dial, revealing most of the sophisticated movement with an intricate perlage finish. The distinctive characteristic remains the 6 o’clock front dial positioning of its visible balance wheel. The dial, however, has been opened, exposing the manufacturing beauty and highlighting the richness of watchmaking expertise, whilst infusing it with its distinctive free-spirited attitude. The Freelancer Calibre RW1212 Skeleton is a two hand model providing an understated display of the hours and minutes. While working on the initial design, the team at Raymond Weil redesigned and pared down all of the elements closely relating to the exquisite mechanism so as to endow this exclusive in-house movement with even more depth and character. Framed by a 42mm steel case, the movement’s assembly and open-worked details are key to the final horological aesthetic of this timepiece. The mechanical self-winding Calibre RW1212 beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a 38hour power reserve. Its Raymond Weil engraved oscillating weight has also been skeletonised to increase the transparency of the timepiece.

Freelancer Calibre RW1212 Skeleton is presented in three different versions; full black PVD plated; rose gold and stainless steel.

AVANTI

Designing the Future Owning a multi-million pound superyacht is not for everyone...not simply as a result of the enormous monetary figures involved, but the complex process that goes into every inch of the design. It’s very easy to dream, but once you start to try and impliment those dreams into the real world, you soon begin to realise why they are called dreams. Thankfully, the incredible Winch Design team behind Heesen Yacht’s stunning Avanti know just how to manage your expectations.

Engaging in a somewhat intense process, you can go from an initial platform - such as the Avanti - to the yacht of your dreams in the flick of a pencil*. Everything from exterior design to your yacht’s power supply will need to be considered, agreed and ‘fitted’. It may sound simple, but in order to accommodate your 10-seater cinema, marine biology lab and 12-metre pool whilst actually including some form of propulsion for your yacht is not the easiest of tasks and requires some serious thought processing.

heesenyachts.com | winchdesign.com

Potential buyers of a Heesen Yacht have the unique opportunity to work hand-in-hand with the highly acclaimed and heavily awarded Winch Design whose opening gambit is simply; ‘It all begins with your dream’, which is true in every sense. Whatever style, size, type of yacht you are looking for, the team at Winch will do everything humanly (and maybe even a little more) possible to design and develop your dream into reality. Real world, physical limitations are the only factor standing in their way, but that’s not to say they won’t find a solution to ensure the final product is as close as can be to your dream. Extensive collaboration occurs throughout the design stage with teams from both Heesen and Winch on hand at every meeting to deliver as quick, smooth and detailed process as possible without compromising on your requirements and wishes. The sheer volume of decisions that need to be made right from how your yacht will look on the water to the dark depths of sanitation on-board mean that the design and development stages of your dream yacht could take a number of years to complete. Depending on the complexities involved such as the inclusion of an on-board helipad or on-board tender dock that converts into a swimming pool, you could be in for a long process. Despite this, the team at Winch provide an incredibly engaging process, offering you the opportunity to see first hand the design process as it happens, bringing immediate adaptations to your design as you move through meetings, building and improving on ideas as they materialise.

with an environmental impact that is the lowest in the world, they are prepared for every eventuality and invite anyone who is looking to push boundaries. Equally, they offer some incredible ‘off-the-shelf ’ design ideas that can be very easily adapted to your needs. The Heesen Avanti concept design is a 66m yacht with luxury at its heart. Complete with 5 metre pool; lounges on all 3 levels; interior and exterior dining options and large foredeck tender garage to accommodate two custom tenders, this is a yacht that already packs a punch and provides the ideal start point to develop your dream. Everything is adaptable without limitation, all you have to remember is, the more you change, the more expensive it will get and the longer you will have to wait to enjoy it. The design of Avanti is truly stunning, focusing on the relationship with the water, large, sleek windows stretch the length of the yacht with distinctive features such as implementing a half

Established over 30 years ago, Winch Design are at the forefront of yacht design in every respect. Bringing fresh ideas and distinctive style to an ever changing industry is what they do. Whether you’re looking for something out of the ordinary from an exterior aesthetic perspective or a superyacht ready for the future *Figuratively speaking...it will take a lot more than a brief meeting with a designer and his/her pencil to take delivery of your dream superyacht.

deck design as the top deck in order to reduce the profile on the water maintaining Heesen’s vision of producing high performance luxury yachts. The whole process will open your eyes to a world of factors that you have probably never even considered before, but will only intensify the relationship between you and your yacht. Unlike buying a pre-built house or even a luxury car, where you are limited to playing with the interior design and possibly a few exterior details, this is a wholy immersive experience where you can quite literally offer up any idea with regard to any aspect of the yacht and it can be put into action. From the shape of the bow to the smallest of final touch detail on the interior, Winch will be with you offering expert advice and

suggestion along with a host of incredible previous works that may just give your imagination a kick start that you never knew it needed. And if upon delivery it’s still not quite enough, you can return for Winch’s architectural or aviation services to complete the set. Such high levels of quality are not easy to come by, and there is good reason Winch have numerous returning international clients. It’s not solely down to the work they do, but the relationships they build in the process to really understand you needs and desires. The world truly is your oyster and Winch and Heesen are on hand to build the perfect yacht on which to explore it. All you have to do is decide what colour you want Avanti supplied in...and a few million pounds in the bank of course.

Not so great for those mid-week mornings, but breakfast in the hotel’s signature South Place Chop House restaurant will make it easier to get up. South Place Chop House is located on the ground floor of the hotel and offers a simple, seasonal menu of carefully sourced cuts of meat and freshly caught fish, modernised with continental flavours and seasoning. Led by Head Chef, Guy Betteridge, menu highlights include Crispy Squid with chili and spring onions; Chop House Salad; Slow Roasted Belly of Old Spot Pork; 300g Rib Eye cooked on the Josper Grill; and Dorset Crab Cake. At the weekend, the Chop House becomes a social spot serving up free-flowing bubble brunches and traditional roasts, complemented by a selection of curated craft beers and a short list of wines – more choices can be served from the hotel’s other restaurant, Angler. Cool and contemporary with a dark and neutral palette of greys and pops of canary yellow, South Place is not only soothing for the soul, a real haven from the buzz of the busy streets, but also provides a sleek hotspot for some serious unwinding with friends and colleagues. Summer has brought the latest pop-up to the hotel in the form of the Secret Garden. Tucked away, the secret bar is an oasis of waterfalls and palm trees with a retractable roof in case of changeable weather and heaters to maintain tropical climates all year round. Otherwise you can make the most of the blissful weather we have been having by heading up to the seventh floor to Angler’s Terrace. An extension of the hotel’s Michelin-starred seafood restaurant, serving Executive Chef, Gary Foulkes’ menu of delectable dishes, the terrace has been transformed into a picturesque summer bar in collaboration with England’s finest sparkling wine, Nyetimber. Both inside the hotel and a short walk away you’ll find something to explore on every visit.

PARK HYATT MALLORCA

Mallorca

As quick escapes to the sun go, there are few places as easy to reach as the stunning Spanish island of Mallorca. It’s easy to see why so many British holiday makers take the short hop over, but there’s more to this island oasis than you may have been led to believe.

Nestled in the hills of the Cap Vermell estate overlooking Canyamel valley sits the stunning Park Hyatt Mallorca. Located just inland on the eastern side of the island, the hotel is perfectly positioned to explore the secluded coves and inviting bays up and down the coastline while boasting easy access to pretty villages and historic towns such as Artà and Capdepera. Just an hour from the airport, this is ideal to escape the crowds. Built in a traditional Mallorcan style, the resort is reminiscent of wandering one of the many old towns, just with a hint of fresh-faced recency about it. Needless to say, this is a new resort that is paving the way for this region of Mallorca which has remained undeveloped and untouched by the tourist hoards. The first foray into Europe for the Park Hyatt group and what a way to make your mark. This is a truly stunning hotel with insta-worthy shots at every corner, and that’s before any of the spectacular flora has had a chance to really establish itself. Pockets of greenery flow throughout the resort with vibrant flowers and lush greens that will transform the destination over the coming years. For now, you will just have to suffer with the incredibly stylish quality on offer. Beautifully amalgamated, the juxtaposition between traditional architecture and modern interior design works perfectly here. Light, fresh colours adorn both interior and exterior walls bringing an overall brightness to the resort that immediately

lifts the mood - of course the intense Mallorcan sun also plays a part. Incredible views from every room and an extensive list of hotel amenities allow you to spend as much time as you want on the resort with little need to leave. Two pools - one of which adult only - are supported by access to the Cap Vermell country club located at the bottom of the hill that you pass on arrival. Featuring further pools, tennis courts and Turkish bath amongst other things, you won’t go short of ways to while away the day. Equally, if you are looking for something a little more active, you can hire a bike and venture out into the stunning countryside or enjoy one of the six surrounding golf courses at your leisure. On return to the hotel you will undoubtedly require a nutritional pick me up and thankfully there is plenty on offer. Four eateries offering dining options throughout the day are available. From Spanish and Mallorcan cuisine at the main Balearic restaurant and poolside Tapas Bar to Southeast Asian delights in Asia restaurant. Alternatively, for a relaxed lunch or afternoon treat, head to Café Sa Plaça with local Mallorcan art adorned walls and outdoor terrace to make the most of the sun. However you are looking to spend your time whilst in Mallorca, this is one place you will want to return to, and not just once it has matured.

IBEROSTAR GRAND PORTALS NOUS

Perched on a steep coastal incline stands proudly the Iberostar Grand Portals Nous. Conspicuous in design, this is not a hotel that is looking to shy away. Finished in striking white with unque curves and stylish features, the hotel manages to stand out whilst appearing perfectly placed. Situated in a small, secluded bay on the south coast and just 20 minutes from Palma, this vibrant oasis is the perfect destination for a stylish retreat from the main tourist spots. Crystal clear waters and views as far as the eye can see to the horizon, complete with direct access to the beach, the location is idyllic. Add to that a spectacular offering of rooms that are not only vast, but distinctly clean in design and lounging areas beyond imagination, there is no reason to leave. Opt for a penthouse room and you will get to enjoy those endless views from the comfort of your own private terrace. What’s more, you can choose to look out over the open ocean from the sun loungers or your hot tub, the choice is yours. Just remember the lotion as this sun trap, however enjoyable, will do some serious damage if you spend all day up there...which you will. Thankfully the hotel’s butler service is on hand to keep you hydrated throughout the day with a selection of fantastic chilled wines - and soft drinks should you need them. This hotel is not only unique in design, but in room offering too. There are so many options to choose from including a spa suite which comes complete with private sauna; games suite

which features a personal putting green out on the terrace, pinball machine, table football and chess along with a video games console connected to a 48” TV; and ‘Naughty Suite’ to accommodate those looking for a more intimate stay in style. At every turn there is something to see that catches the eye. From the tile detailing in the pool area to the building itself and everything in between, you can spend forever delving into the design ethos behind this hotel. All 66 original rooms feature the stamp of Marcel Wanders and each delivers a unique experience. The theme continues throughout the hotel and on arrival at the spa, it becomes very clear indeed. Unlike any other spa you may have come across, this space is a destination in its own right. ‘Trees’ add a modern take on nature to the area while standalone gold showers rise from the floor to the ceiling all surrounded by a complex patterned mosaic floor. Featuring saunas, experience showers, treatment booths and hydrotherapy circuit, this is the ideal place to relax and unwind. For something a little more active, why not take advantage of the hotel’s fitness suite, take a cycle in the local area or hire some golf clubs from the hotel for a round at the nearby Real Golf de Bendinat course. Unsurprisingly, there will always be plenty to do outside the resort thanks to the incredible offering that this island possesses, but the beauty of this hotel is truly in its design and location. There is little need to venture too far when you have such fantastic views

KASPAR’S Kaspar’s At The Savoy has recently launched a brand new menu focusing on the notion of being ‘Not bound by the seasons, but inspired by them’. The impressive menu at the iconic Art Deco restaurant named after The Savoy’s most famous four legged feline, marks a new direction, where provenance and the relationships with suppliers are at the heart of every dish served. Selecting only the finest produce farmed, caught and picked across the country and pairing it with fresh and seasonal flavours, the chefs - Head Chef Igor Kabatsikov and Sous Chef Brandon Clemens - have created a changing menu highlighting contemporary dishes from both land and sea ensuring there is something for everyone to choose from. Creative displays also showcase the vibrancy of the natural landscape and bring them right to your plate in the form of colourful garnishes and artistic touches. The Blackened Loch Duart Salmon with wild garlic, Wye Valley asparagus and Cornish crab nage in particular is so delicately positioned it is like having a small garden on your plate - the perfect demonstration of land and sea coming together. Provenance takes precedence with Kaspar’s new offering as suppliers feature throughout the menu. From smoked mackerel from Fraserborough, Dover Sole from Cornwall and Lobster

from Harris, to Ribeye from Cork, Oysters from Maldon, and King Crab from the Bering Sea, the menu’s exceptional ingredients and their distinctive origins are all listed for guests to see. Highlight dishes include the artful Cornish Hen Crab & Native Lobster Bisque with Lobster Flesh, Espelette and Coriander; meaty Newlyn Dover Sole; Trill Dairy Lamb Duo with Somerset Peas and Graceburn Cheese; and Pan Seared North Atlantic Halibut with smoked roe, brassicas and burnt mussel fumet. The meal wouldn’t be complete without something sweet, and the Paris-London doesn’t disappoint with delightfully crunchy choux pastry, homemade praline and chocolate mousseline. There is also an impressive British Cheese Board should you wish to continue on the savoury front or you could even order a perfectly crafted Espresso Martini to enjoy with the live music in the nearby Thames Foyer of the hotel. Location wise, Kaspar’s at the Savoy is perfect for every dining experience. From leisurely lunches and pre-theatre meals to Champagne and Seafood at the central bar and elegant dinners. The Art Deco influence is clear to see with glamourous chequer board marble floors, a silver leaf ceiling, cut glass mirroring and Murano columns - ideal for its iconic surrounds in the heart of theatre land.

These timeless stories, featuring everyone’s favourite magical nanny, are on display in the restaurant in giant form as guests enter for afternoon tea. Tiny black umbrellas fill the dining area as guests are taken up, up and away with the well-thought-out tea. Served on adorably illustrated crockery, traditional sandwiches include the delectable Aqua Shard, The Shard, 31 St Thomas St, London SE1 9RY

The Wolseley Cackleberry egg and black truffle; Dingley Dell Honey Roast Ham and Mustard mayonnaise and Norfolk Rocket; Dressed Devon crab brioche; and Mary’s favourite crumpets with smoked salmon. The ‘Strike me Pink Sponge’ and ‘The Back to front Zoo’ Golden syrup tart are the highlights of the sweets, while the freshly spun candyfloss and warm scones served from Mary Poppin’s famous bag are an excellent touch. Guests can choose to have a Champagne Afternoon Tea experience with a glass of Veuve Cliquot Yellow Label or Veuve Cliquot Rose Champagne, and kids can enjoy an old fashioned lemonade float. Alongside a full tea menu, guests are encouraged to try one of the specially created teas – Mary’s, a sweet, floral blend of black teas; or Bert’s, a slightly smokier blend of lapsang souchong, Ceylon, vanilla and cornflower. The Mary Poppins Afternoon Tea will be served in the triple-storey atrium of aqua shard, boasting panoramic views of London’s skyline. Served every day from 1.00-5.00pm, the afternoon tea is priced at £49 per person, or £66 with a glass of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Champagne, and £72 with a glass of Veuve Clicquot Rosé. 020 3011 1256 | aquashard.co.uk

Beck at Brown's

In celebration of the beautiful summer we are having, Beck at Brown’s has launched a brand-new summer menu available for lunch and dinner. Boasting a menu bursting with classic Italian dishes, created using the finest British ingredients, showcasing the harmonious blend of Heinz’s Italian cooking with the hotel’s British heritage. Fish has been sourced from Flying Fish in Cornwall, beef from the award-winning Rhug Estate in Wales and herbs from leading UK supplier Forager. The restaurant has been recently redesigned by Olga Polizzi bringing a fresh new look to the space. An air of botanical gardens adorns the walls, whilst bright, plush seating borders this wonderfully open dining room with bright splashes of teal which really pop against the dark panel divides. This is an inviting space with the perfect balance of light and dark to accommodate brighter lunches and more subtle, romantic dinners. Highlights of the new, summery menu include pan-fried calamari with fennel, dried tomato & saffron; summer vegetable salad with avocado, mixed seeds & pistachio pesto and; grilled dover sole with baby carrots, lemon and capers sauce. The Seared bluefin tuna with fermented swiss chard marinated in rice vinegar is a wonderfully clean dish with full flavours, making it the perfect starter. The Pan-seared Scottish scallops with green and white asparagus is another fantastic option - the scallops are cooked to perfection and are very generously sized. A master at creating innovative twists on both world-famous

recipes and regional specialties, Heinz has created a number of fabulous pasta dishes all created with fresh, house-made pasta. Must-try dishes include linguine with salsify & summer truffle, and the delightfully summery Spaghetti cacio e pepe with limemarinated scampi. Truly delicious. Other well-executed highlights include Grilled black cod with a ‘nduja crust’, red peppers and cucumber; and Fillet of marinated beef with chicory and horseradish mayonnaise. Paired with an extensive wine selection, the experience at Beck at Brown’s is highly satisfying, however be sure to make room for dessert as the signature affogato tiramisu is not to be missed, and the summer addition of Ricotta cream with marzipan, soft pistachio & sorbet of candied orange is a lovely seasonal finish.

Ours Tucked away at the end of a long and winding corridor that you may recognise from Instagram, Restaurant Ours is a real hidden treasure of South Kensington. Conveniently located between Knightsbridge and South Kensington, you would never expect what awaits you at the end of the corridor. Brining the outside in, the large and airy restaurant features tonnes of greenery, exposed brick, and a central marble topped bar. Extremely atmospheric, the addition of booths, fairy lit trees and a very cool retro playlist make this a wonderous dining experience that you will find yourself questioning why you haven’t been before. Start with some nibbles and a cocktail at the bar or cool Living Room on the mezzanine level. The cheekily named ‘Made in Chelsea’ made with Absolut Elyx vodka, crème de mure, passion fruit puree, fresh berries and prosecco is not only pretty but very easy to drink. While the Gin in a Bottle, quite literally comes served in a genie’s lamp. With such theatrics without the pomp it is no surprise to hear that the restaurant comes from the same team that created Mayfair’s infamous nightclub, Cirque Le Soir. What’s even better is that the food does certainly not disappoint. Using seasonal, fresh ingredients and bold flavours, the internationally inspired menu has been created by Head Chef Douglas Santi. Santi has lived all over the world and has previously worked with the likes of Alain Ducasse and Laurent Saudeau and this shows in his menu. Created as a tapas style menu, broken up section by section – Raw, Roasted, Crisp, Grill, Signatures, Salads and Sides – guests are encouraged to choose four or five dishes each to share.

A fusion of Latin, Mediterranean and Asian, highlights include Soft Shell Crab with avocado and sweet chilli; homemade truffle ravioli with Taleggio cheese; Spiced baby chicken and pickled walnuts; Chargrilled sweetcorn with artichokes and crispy shallots; and Tuna Poke with avocado, tobiko, wasabi and prawn crisps. The Beef Rib with herb salad and beef glaze is well executed with the beef melting away from the bone. Carefully chosen wines complete the meal. If you have space the Green Apple and Yuzu Cheesecake is well worth a try if you are after something palette cleansing, whereas the Chocolate Fondant with Cashew Ice Cream; and Doughnuts with Salted Caramel, Vanilla ice cream are pure decadence. With fantastic food, whimsical theatrics, impeccable service and an insta worthy location – be sure to get a snap by the pink ombre flower wall - Restaurant Ours is destination dining at its best.

Serving up a whole host of cocktails against floor to ceiling windows boasting uninterrupted views of the iconic London skyline, Savage Garden is a bold oasis for serious cocktail connoisseurs. Decadent in serves and interiors, the rooftop location is not like any you’ve seen before. Contrasting textures of stone, metal and wood mingle with plush velvet furnishing and elegant marbled surfaces. Striking burnt orange and yellow tones play cool blues, while edgy urban artwork adorns the walls. The show piece here is the drinks menu. Developed by Gorgeous Group, Head of Mixology Andre Cavalheiro has created a dramatic menu to surprise even the most discerning cocktail connoisseur. Try the Savage Spritz Plymouth Sloe Gin, Chartreuse, red vineyard peach & hops bitters and Ayala Champagne; The Punk Rock Fashioned – whiskey-based with cherry, chocolate and mint in a glowing rose sugar encrusted black glass; or the calorie conscious Lespresso – a clear coffee cocktail. Make the most of the stunning summer weather and head outside to Savage Garden’s two terraces offering stunning 360-degree vistas that take in some of the city’s most iconic landmarks including The Shard, Tower of London, The Gherkin and St. Paul’s Cathedral. Alongside the wide-ranging cocktail menu, which also includes all the classics, Savage Garden boasts an extensive wine and champagne list as well as a wide selection of premium spirits and beers. If you’re feeling hungry make the most of the carnivorous board featuring coconut beef short ribs, beef sliders and roasted poussin accompanied by fries with black mayo and spicy savageslaw. Perfect for sharing the tender meat goes down a treat against the bold cocktail flavours. Other feasting platters, great for the vegetarian and pescatarian among us, include charred radishes with firecracker dressing, plantain chips with avocado hummus and tempura oysters. The menu also boasts an array of smaller sharing plates such as sesame prawn toast with bacon jam, and charred octopus – ideal if you aren’t feeling too hungry. Dessert is equally show-stopping with injectable doughnuts and rum & raisin ice lollies. Savage Garden, 7 Pepys St, London EC3N 4AF savagegarden.co.uk

R8 V10+ Launched in 2006, the R8 has been at the forefront of Audi's production vehicle offering ever since. Taking extensive note from the marque's continued spectacular form in motor sport, this car pushes the boundaries of on-the-road driving. Enjoying continual improvement and adaptation according to Audi's progressive research and development, the R8 has maintained a position at the top of the pile when it comes to both aesthetics and performance - something most other cars over 10 simply can't achieve. Defined by its now iconic profile and blatant side mounted air intakes, the visual appeal of this car will never tire and now, thanks to developments in light, manufacturing and material technologies, the design has once again been enhanced. Aggressively angular LED headlight clusters instantly lay down the mark with the obvious and oversized front grille - now synonymous with the Audi brand - adding to the cars evident potential. Supported by deep air intakes stretching to the cars extremities, the front profile is wide, low, angular and aggressive yet somehow manages to support a sleek and elegant persona that allows the R8 to traverse very different worlds, in which it is equally at home.

A casual saunter along the French Riviera and this is an eyecatching masterpiece that is as welcome as the next expressive supercar. Take it for a weekend at the track and it will transform into an entirely different beast, one that despite its incredible power, can be surprisingly easy to tame. Just don't take your finger off the pulse, that's when she'll bite.

audi.co.uk

AUDI R8 V10 PLUS

Distinguished by subtle exterior styling, the R8 V10 Plus is not a car to be taken lightly. Despite possessing the ability to be as comfortable driving around town as a hatchback, this car is one of many, very different faces. Activate 'Performance Mode' in the Audi Drive Select and feel this cars wrath. Well, you will hear it first in all honesty. Opening the controllable exhaust flaps, you will enjoy the distinctive signature roar produced by the impressive naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine - one of the few remaining engines of its type in any supercar.

Producing a staggering 610PS and boasting 560Nm of maximum torque, it's abundantly apprant that this car is not just for show. Thrusting you from zero to sixty-two in just 3.2 seconds and continuing in the same vein all the way to 205mph, this is not only the fastest production car Audi have ever produced, but a vehicle that will rival almost all on the road. With such lightning fast performance, it was essential for the Ingolstadt based company to develop a car around this magnificent drivetrain that can not only handle the forces involved, but manage them in such a way that they can be controlled and manipulated. On further interegation, they have done a quite remarkable job. Stability by the bucket-load and traction like you wouldn't believe, this is a marvel of mechanics. A sharp turn into a corner at speed is negotiated beautifully by the adapted quattro system allowing you to put down the power as early as possible on exit without compromising the cars integrity. Of course, if you wish to push this car to its limits, one; you will need to find a track, a fast track and two; you will need to push hard. Everything on this car has been specifically designed to enhance its performance, from the gloss carbon rear spoiler which adds significant downforce through cornering to the quattro system that can send 100% of the available torque to the front or rear axle in a fraction of a second. audi.co.uk

YOUR DRIVE However, it would all be meaningless if you weren't able to transfer the power to the tarmac. Fortunately, Audi's 7-speed S-Tronic transmission is more than up to the job. Complete with steering mounted paddle shift for a bit of intensified engagement with your car, the system is able to process information at an alarmingly quick rate - certainly much faster than you or I would ever manage. Changing gear in a matter of hundreths of a second through a dual clutch, the transition is not only faster than you could imagine, but so smooth it continues unnoticed - until you want to know about it at least. Surprisingly the design team were able to take their gaze away from the exterior and performance aspects of this car just long enough to produce an interior cabin worthy of any luxury supercar with a slight hint of rugged race car for good measure. Adopting a single-seater cockpit design, a crystal clear display is at the heart of the interior. Resting neatly behing the steering wheel, the Audi Virtual Cockpit brings everything you could possibly need directly into your line of sight allowing you to concentrate on the road ahead. Simple, clear switchgear provides an easy way to make alterations to the climate, audio and drive settings without the need to search through menu after menu. Thanks to designated buttons on the steering wheel, you can alter the cars drive mode in an instant transforming your daily runaround to a track-ready monster in the push of a button.

Audi R8 V10 Plus Coupé Engine 5.2-Litre V10 Transmission 7-speed S-Tronic Power (PS) 610 Torque (Nm) 560 0-62mph (secs) 3.2 Max Speed (mph) 205 Fuel Consumption (mpg) 21.1 Carbon Dioxide Emissions (g/km) 306 Price £141,200 (As Driven) £153,395

This cars longevity and continued quality in both performance and design are staking a huge claim on icon status. The R8 manages to bridge a gap between 'traditional' supercar styling and modern design in a way that few others have been able to achieve in this market and that appeals to a considerable population of potential buyers. If there were an opportunity to put posters on your wall once again, this would certainly be somewhere near the top of your list. Every aspect of this car has been executed to the highest order and for the price you pay, you will struggle to find anything better suited to its purpose.

Italian Rarebreed

1952 Lancia Aurelia B52 Rosa D'Oro Coupe - POA

In 1952, Lancia was still continuing the pre-war tradition of supplying a limited number of rolling chassis to renowned coachbuilders such as Ghia and Vignale, but this B52 Aurelia was fotunate enough to receive the Pinin Farina treatment. A number of these Rosa d'Oro cars were produced - although the actual figure is questioned between four and six vehicles - with just three being built in this coupe body type. Elegant styling combined with muscular features and exaggerated dimensions make for an unmistakably Italian car and with its sleek pillarless windows and smooth body line enhanced by the contrast coloured roof, you enjoy the illusion of a much smaller car. This rare Pinin Farina bodied Lancia Aurelia B52 is not only a stunning example, but passes the eligibility for the historic Mille Miglia. Presented in cream coachwork with contrast black roof

and tan leather interior, the car is in excellent condition following an extensive restoration. A huge file which includes photographic restoration detail carried out in the UK in 2009 is available and demonstrates the amount of work that has been put in to this Concours worthy beauty. The two-tone design dashboard with its stylish round dials is breathtaking, continuing the theme of the overall aesthetic. But it's not just how it looks, the car drives tightly through corners thanks to its suspension, whilst moving with grandeur and grace on the road. One of the car’s curiosities is that behind the generous front bench seat there are only folding seats, another unique detail that makes this car all the more special. This is a very special and rare matching numbers car that is not to be missed. A car for the true connoisseur it would be a welcome entrant at a host of global Concours D’ Elegance.

Since its launch in 2016, Levante has grown to become Italian marque's best seller. It's success is paving the way further development across the model range and offering up undeniable opportunity for some much needed regeneration of brands older family members too.

the for the the

The Levante itself however is making its mark on the SUV world in a way few others can compete. For a start, it looks like a sports car, rather than a utility vehicle. Admittedly, the underlying idea of an SUV is for its functionality, but Maserati know and understand the market...the market where 90% of the people now

maserati.com

YOUR DRIVE buying premium SUV's have zero to no interest in actually ever taking their pride and joy off the road, let alone transporting a hoard of muddy adventurers around. Removing these constraints in the design and development process make for a rather inviting prospect. Sleek lines with aggressive arches and detailing combine to create a vehicle that would look as much at home on a race track as it does on the public highway, however that's not to say it's not capable of more. This is a car very much designed with driving in mind and is instantly distinguishable from its competitors in that respect. Composure on the road in abundance, this car can be driven in much the same manner as you would expect from any other Maserati, and with the introduction of an incredible 3.8-litre V8 unit under the bonnet of two new editions - GTS and Trofeo, there really is no limit. Boasting a staggering 550hp and 590hp respectively, these latest additions to the Levante line up take this SUV to new heights and perch it comfortably atop the pile when it comes to performance. A zero to sixty-two time of just 3.9 seconds and 189mph top speed make for impressive figures in any car, let alone an SUV. Twin turbochargers aid in the power department whilst the Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive system with rear limited-slip differential works with the adjustable air suspension and sport skyhook system to suitably adapt and adjust according to your driving to ensure the car consistently responds at the highest level. Monitoring a wide range of parameters at alarming rates, the system is able to individually adjust each wheel for maximum grip and comfort. The sportiest setting is reserved for the Trofeo version, featuring the 'Corsa' driving mode which will focus all systems towards driving performance.

Thanks to a chassis retune on the V8 models, despite the additional 60kg engine weight, it maintains an ideal 50:50 frontto-rear weight distribution which, combined with its low centre of gravity offers further benefits to driving pleasure. Design has been key to the Levante's success and the team at Maserati have been keen to continue the trend. Now with the introduction of GranLusso and GranSport trims, Levante is available in a much more luxurious or sporty guise. Significant alterations to external detailing as well as considerable variations inside including materials and options immediately distinguish the two trims from each other, with both providing the pinnacle of design. Exclusive Ermenegildo Zegna Silk interiors and chrome detailing are available as part of the GranLusso package whilst the GranSport trim features a piano black finish to the front grille and skid plates with a much more aggressive profile produced by a different front-end configuration - bigger air intakes defined by two aerodynamic wings with less furniture - that has been adopted from the new GTS and Trofeo versions. These styling updates not only offer the epitome in luxury driving, but bring a new aspect to the Levante that has, until now, been missing. Those in search of a sportier version now have the option and those in the market for something a little more luxurious no longer have to worry about going through customisation processes which often wind up much more expensive. GranLusso and GranSport will undoubtedly be popular options for buyers providing premeditated packages that include everything one might want from a certain type of car. One thing is clear with this MY19 update, and that is Maserati have not forgotten their racing heritage and are very keen to show it off to the world in every way they can.

SAVILLS

InstaFame for Mews Properties with Duncan Petrie, Head of Sales Savills Mews Department

When Instagram released its most geo-tagged locations of 2017, not only was London its third most instagrammed city worldwide, but Notting Hill was revealed as the fifth most popular London attraction, sitting closely behind several of the capital’s landmarks. A glance at users’ images of Notting Hill shows that it's largely photos of mews and pastel-coloured homes that populate the feed.

Meanwhile a review of hashtags brings up circa 55,000 images under the 'mews' tag. So what is it that makes mews houses so popular on the photo-sharing app? Perhaps as the urban version of a chocolate-box cottage London’s characterful mews are a vision of quintessential England. Originally built in the 18th and 19th century to serve as stables, mews are a reminder of the London of yesteryear and their tucked-away position simply adds to their allure and whimsical nature. The individuality of every home, with each one different from the next, also gives photographers the chance to capture a true sense of property diversity. And then, of course, they are just so photogenic: often pastel in colour, with window boxes in full bloom and charming cobbled streets paving the way to their front doors, it's no wonder they are so popular on Instagram.

COLUMN

Napier Place, Holland Park A beautifully presented three bedroom house in this pretty and quiet mews close to Kensington High Street. The house is arranged over four floors. The basement level comprises a kitchen/dining room with a large void bringing light from above and there is a guest WC and utility room. The ground floor comprises reception room with fireplace and a dual aspect and a guest WC. The first floor has almost identical sized bedroom suites and the second floor is given over to the master bedroom suite with dressing room and luxurious en suite bathroom. This very bright house is well specified with ceiling mounted speakers, air conditioning and underfloor heating to all rooms.

Festooned in wisteria, Kensington's Kynance Mews is one of the prettiest in London, with the arches at its entrance providing the perfect frame for photographs. The external staircases at Holland Park Mews, meanwhile, are reminiscent of the romantic wrought iron balconies found in Europe and photograph just as well in winter as they do in summer. The only London mews with commercial riding stables, Paddington’s Bathurst Mews is a fusion of splendid architecture, abundant greenery and a proper sense of community where tables, benches and trees sit along the cobbles for residents to socialise. It’s no surprise that this historic mews is such a prevalent Instagram address. While many mews properties are situated on a street with mews in its name, this isn’t always the case. Napier Place in Holland Park is one such example, captivating those who wander in with its mews features and characteristics but without the label in its address. It isn't just the general mews hashtag that garners likes on Instagram. More specific ones, such as #mewsoflondon and #mewsings, are also popular, with both Londoners and visitors embarking on mews trails, taking photos as they go and posting them on their feeds. There's no doubt they are much appreciated: when Savills posted an image of a mews house on Instagram recently it got double the likes of the property posted before and after it.

In the E14 property market, timing is everything; here's why. All property

I can't remember a time when there's been more excitement about the E14 property market. I'm having more and more conversations with the buyers and sellers we advise who realise that they've 'timed their runs' perfectly. As I've seen many times before; as the market turns a corner, momentum starts building very fast. It can't be denied that the market has been fairly cool of late. Indeed across the whole London region, there were 28.1 per cent fewer sales in the first three months of 2018 than in the same period of 2017. In E14, sales were 64 per cent down, so we've underperformed the regional market, but that comes as no surprise given the change comes from a high base.

Looking to the present, more and more evidence is showing that the recovery is well underway. The reason people are acting quicker is to capture as much house price inflation as possible. At its pre-credit crunch peak in 2007, homes grew in value by 19 per cent per year equivalent to ÂŁ51,000 per year, so the rewards of making a smart move speak for themselves. There's quite a lot of hysteria in the press about the state of the housing market. Yet it's important to remember that it takes a long time for market 'events' to appear in the statistics and get picked up by the press. Take it from me, the next cycle is well underway, and people who move soon stand to gain the most. Spencer Fortag

In this chart, we’ve compared sales levels for flats and houses in the last few years. Instead of looking at absolute numbers, we’ve indexed the rates. This means that flats and houses start at 100 at the start of the period and you can see how they’ve changed since, on an equal basis.

Property prices of different house types can be like chalk and cheese. Smaller properties have a higher turnover and lower price than larger properties. So for this chart we've stripped out the actual figures and look at an index of how each type has performed over time.

Number of people per home The number of people living in homes in the local area tells us a lot about the character of our market. Areas with smaller households tend to be dominated by either the very young or very old. Homes with more people tend to be dominated by families and this is the case for most housing markets around the country.
