Merry Christmas from all of us at

Your Media London

FROM THE EDITOR The end is upon us on another year in London, but there is plenty to look back on in fond memory. However, that can wait as there is still a lot to be done before the year is out. Parties, presents and the obligatory family gatherings are all still yet to come - unless you are actually organised and don’t have to worry about those last minute gifts. Regardless of your organisational skills, you can rest easy knowing that the time for celebration and forgetting about work for those rare few days in the year are almost here - oh, and the little matter of the best meal you will have enjoyed over the past 12 months! Although it is the time for giving, don’t forget to take a few moments to yourself and contemplate everything you have achieved this year. Big or small, any success is worthy of note and offers a great foundation to build on as we move in to the new year. You should also take the time to remember all the things you couldn’t quite find the time for this year and make

a concerted effort to tick it off your list in the coming months. Looking forward to the month ahead, it is time to venture out and sample the plethora of festive inspired spots that have sprung up over the capital. From warming cocktails to lively winter lodges, there is something for everyone and certainly plenty to enjoy. As everyone winds down, it offers the perfect excuse to catch up with friends, family and colleagues that you may have neglected in recent weeks as you rush to get everything tied up. Whatever you find yourself doing over the Christmas break, make sure you have a very merry time, it comes but once a year and you should make the most of it. And for those who would rather not hear the word Christmas again, there are plenty of winter sun destinations to choose from for a last minute retreat that will provide the ideal escape. It’s also a great way to refresh before the new year!

WATCHES

The Cape Cod Born in 1991, The Cape Cod watch was cultivated by creative Henri d’Origny. He had been asked to imagine a square watch, but he preferred rectangular ones, so based on a rather out-of-the-box idea cutting the iconic “Anchor Chain” motif in two, Henri dared to combine the shapes. A square embedded in a rectangle, the Cape Cod watch is magnified by its double tour strap that gives the watch an additional touch of originality and boldness. The collection also features new versions. The first features a rhodium-plated dial, polished to create a mirror-like effect and coated with a precious translucent lacquer. It is available in two versions - Large Model and Small Model - with a single or double tour Milanese mesh bracelet. As well as two other variations, in Large Model version only, with a single or double tour étoupe or Malta blue strap. The dial of the first features a black gold treatment, while the second is blue lacquered. “Anchor Chain” motifs are applied to the dials of these two models - a detail that once again emphasises the spirit of the Cape Cod, which is all about nuances and subtle discoveries. hermes.com

Midnight Precious Weaving Harry Winston introduces the Midnight Precious Weaving Automatic 42mm. First introduced in 2016 with the Premier 36mm timepieces, the House’s precious weaving technique showcases the sublime work of Harry Winston’s master craftsmen, whose handweaving expertise honours Mr. Winston’s boundless creative spirit. The Midnight Precious Weaving Automatic 42mm explores a rare Japanese weaving technique, in which silk gold thread and thin pieces of natural mother-ofpearl are woven together to create a stunning tapestry of shimmering beauty. This unique art form was derived from “Raden,” the ancient Japanese practice of applying shells to wood and lacquer surfaces. The Midnight Precious Weaving Automatic 42mm marks the House’s second exploration with handweaving as a way to transform a timepiece into a creative canvas. By combining mother-of-pearl with land-based silkworms, the House’s designers have created a unique tapestry with a timeless quality. Presented in an 18K white gold case featuring a bold, yet abstract, motif made with interwoven mother-of-pearl and silk. The mother-of-pearl’s natural iridescence reveals itself in different ways according to the light and the beautiful hand-finishings can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back. Equipped with the latest technology included in the flat silicon balance spring, the Midnight Precious Weaving Automatic 42mm is a limited-edition timepiece, with 50 unique pieces. harrywinston.com

WATCHES

A shade that was first introduced with the watchmaking company’s neomatik timepieces, the new versions with manual winding - Tangente, Orion, and Ludwig have a diameter of just 33 millimetres, while the square Tetra has an edge length of only 27 millimetres. Small and elegant, the slender watches flatter more delicate wrists. The four champagne-coloured models are each equipped with the acclaimed hand-wound NOMOS Alpha calibre. While also available with a sapphire crystal glass back, in the stainless steel versions all four new watch models feature space on their backs for a personalised engraving, making this the perfect gift for a loved one this Christmas or even yourself.

Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.

IWC celebrate their 150th anniversary next year. The International Watch Company have come quite someway. Founded by an American, F.A. Jones, whose aim was to create a sustainable watchmaking centre in Schauffhasen. During the two World Wars, many watchmakers lost their way or were disbanded as demand virtually dried out with entire economies being devastated. However, during this period, military instruments including watches were the exception to the rule. Not only was the demand there, innovations were developed to withstand the new environments these watches were exposed to from the magnetic fields created by instruments within the cockpit to pressure variations and drastic changes in temperature, all while housing ultimately delicate mechanical movements. The history and chronology of Pilot’s watches in themselves has been well documented with the German B-Uhr model leading on to IWC’s Big Pilot’s Watch as we know it alongside the simply iconic Mark XI and its counterparts. Given the circumstances in which their original use was designed, the first Big Pilot’s Watch series was around 55mm in diameter an the over sized onion crown so it could be easily manipulated whilst wearing gloves. The simple and smaller Mark XI was built to be legible and robust, visible in almost every condition and able to withstand impacts while providing a reliable medium of measuring time. One mustn’t forget there were no battery operated instruments so flight times, navigation and execution of preplanned aerial bombardment would have been orchestrated in line with the expected accuracy of your wrist watch. The enormity of the challenges presented in any war is quite difficult to comprehend let alone in a time before the digitally assisted hardware. Therefore, these watches and other mechanical tools were incredibly important. Note that other watches such as Rolex’s Submariner or Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms carry similar significance in their application as precision instruments to military divers.

These Pilot’s watches were designed with soft iron cages surrounding the movements protecting them from the magnetic fields, movement elements were invented and redesigned to cope with shocks, impacts and sudden changes in pressure and temperature. Typically made in solid steel cases with screw down crowns to further protect them from water and dust ingress. Finished with a clean dial that though utilitarian in its approach still enjoys an aesthetic appeal that remains undiminished to this day. It is exactly this importance, the fact these watches genuinely played a role that is not conjured from a flimsy and romanticised notion but rather from documented proof of human endeavour and sacrifice. Thus, watches such as this Pilot’s collection have

WATCHES

stood the test of time and continue to thrive. As with their humble beginning, the International Watch Company continues to be just that, offering reliable and well considered creations true to the brand’s motto Probus Schafusia essentially translating as “good, solid craftsmanship from Schaffhausen.” Over the years, the Mark series has develop from the genuine military exploits of the Mark XI & XII to the most recent Mark XVIII model that returned to a fan favourite 40mm diameter and dial layout. The Big Pilot’s Watch & chronograph, both regular and split second variety have continued to remain absolute mainstays of the collection. In the past few years, the Pilot’s collection has dramatically increased from just the Pilot’s and Spitfire collection to now incorporate a “Le Petit Prince” family in tribute to the eponymous book by Antoine de Saint Exupery who as of 2017 now enjoys his own regular series. Then there are the Top Gun and Miramir models evoking IWC’s pioneering ability with ceramic cases and further paying homage to the elite American Fighter pilots and the famous base at which they are exclusively trained. The popularity and provenance of the Pilot’s collection has birthed this dramatic increase and each series has its own fans and detractors. Yet, there is a rarely any argument when a model is launched inspired by their vintage pieces and designed with this era in mind. For 2017, the “Tribute to Mark XI” has enjoyed a positive reaction from fans as a limited run of 1948 pieces. However, our personal favourite was the reintroduction of the Heritage line. Delivered original two years ago in a limited series of Big Pilot’s

models in titanium cases with oversized cases of 55mm and 48mm diameter true to their war time counterparts, this year sees a non limited novelty again in titanium but now also in the Mark XVIII family. Both models have the same matt black dial with faux patina hands and numerals an evoke an aged look. Fitted with brown calf skin straps with contrast white stitching, the whole feel and look is very vintage inspired. The titanium cases do mean both models, especially the Big Pilot’s are much lighter than one would expect but this can also act as a benefit given the size of the case for comfort. This Heritage Big Pilot returns to a classic Pellaton winding system based movement with seven days power reserve, bringing it into line with the current Big Pilot’s models across the board. All in all, these two models are well thought out watches that have a foundation in the tried and tested but adding a sense of modernity with updated movements and a previously unused metal in the Mark series. The Mark XVIII model retails at £3,890.00 while the Big Pilot version is £11,900.00. (A special limited version in Bronze has also been created but you will have to keep an eye out on our Instagram for images and details!) Both models are in stock now with the rest of the Pilot’s collection and other IWC watches. Launceston Place Understated on the outside and fabulous on the inside, Launceston Place was once Princess Diana’s favourite restaurant because of its labyrinth of intimate nooks and crannies and is a hidden gem situated in a quiet part of South Kensington. Recently refurbished and bathed in soft lighting, the clean lines of the elegant and stylish interior compliment the modern European cuisine served with a twist by multi award winning Head Chef, Ben Murphy. At twenty six years old Ben has already won acclaim as one of London’s most exciting chefs. He started his career under the guidance of Pierre offman at the Berkeley Hotel in nightsbridge and has gained valuable experience over the years by working at several Michelin starred restaurants including the three starred Épicure restaurant in Le Bristol Hotel, Paris and the two starred Greenhouse restaurant in Mayfair. Awarded two AA Rosettes in 2017, Ben’s menu at Launceston is seasonally inspired and his creativity and individual style and flair is apparent in every visually stunning dish. ffering a fabulous eight course tasting menu with wine pairing (in addition to the dinner menu) Head Sommelier, Piotr Pietras is on hand to make sure that you get the best selection to complement each course. Awarded Master Sommelier by the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2017, this is the highest accolade of the profession and there are only 236 members worldwide who hold this prestigious title.

Before the first course of egg and soldiers, delightful little amuse bouche dishes arrive including polenta squares and a cornetto of chicken liver parfait with puffed rice. As you would imagine, the egg’ is something completely different and consists of tru e and a scrambled egg mousse served in an egg shell and cup in the shape of what looks like a chicken’s claw. The sough dour soldier is crisp and delicious and perfectly complements the egg. Each consecutive course consisting of glazed baby carrots with lovage oil, yoghurt and caraway fruit, carbonara with lardo and celeriac, tender octopus with diced chorizo and crispy chicken wing and brill served with an acidic verjus sauce and little turnip balls are all little platefuls of heaven. The sixth course is a choice of either Presa Iberica taken from the shoulder of acorn fed pigs and served on a bed of aubergine with a tangy ponzu sauce, or beef served with pear and stilton. Both are equally delicious! Dessert is a chocolate sphere with sesame and citrus yuzu and then apple calvados. Alternatively, you can substitute one of these with a selection of British and French cheeses. There is no doubt that this menu is a unique experience and does exactly what a tasting menu should. Although small portions, each course and every mouthful is bursting full of wonderful flavours which is the true essence of a tasting menu. Tasting menu is £79 with £64 for wine pairing or £149 for premium wine pairing.

Manetta’s Bar Tucked in the winding basement of the luxury boutique hotel Flemings Mayfair, Manetta’s Bar is the perfect place to escape the festive shopping madness of nearby Bond Street and enjoy a delicious cocktail or two. Once a favourite hideaway for scholars of literature and the arts, the original 1930s bar, has been revived, recapturing the surreptitious spirit of a place where spies may have swapped secrets, and where clandestine trysts took place. Glamorous and decadent, the beautiful bar was noted in books such as Agatha Christie’s ‘At Bertram’s Hotel’ and within Sarah Helm’s ‘A Life in Secrets’, a real life cloak-and-dagger tale of Vera Atkins, one of Britain’s premiere secret agents during World War II. Today, the iconic bar allows guests to travel back in time to a golden era whether after work with friends or before dinner in Shaun Rankin’s Ormer Mayfair, which is next door in Flemings. Plush velvet corner sofas and romantic lighting make for intimate meetings, while rose gold accents on lamps and red velvet bar stools sit alongside portraits of Agatha Christie, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce and Alice B. Toklas by Sussex artist, Kate Boxer providing inspiration for numerous creative cocktails. Cocktails are expertly mixed with signatures divided into lists such as ‘The Fantasists’ and ‘The Realists’, there’s even a page dedicated to cocktails inspired by the Murder on the Orient Express. Inventive and delicious sips include Half a Step Outside the Circle made with Cherry Heering, blood orange syrup and Devaux Cuvée Champagne; and They Do It with Mirrors, Herradura Blanco tequila, crème de peche, lavender and Manetta’s Bar , -1

chamomile syrup, egg white, lemon juice and Zinfandel red wine, named after Agatha Christie’s novel. Other classic cocktails include the Hemmingway Daiquiri; and Brandy Crusta with Remy Martin VSOP Cognac, Cointreau, Maraschino, Angostura Bitters and Lemon juice. There’s also a fine wine list and a variety of sparkling wines and champagnes. Enjoy alongside one of the many bar bites created by Ormer Mayfair. Small plates include seabass ceviche with cucumber and sesame dressing, and crispy calamari. The sharing charcuterie board is an excellent choice coming complete with moreish mushroom arancini with tru e mayonnaise. Opulent and lavish, you won’t want to leave this historic hideaway.

St James’ Hotel and Club 1840 Afternoon Tea In celebration on the V&A’s new opera exhibition ‘Opera: Passion, Power and Politics’, luxury five-star St. ames’s Hotel and Club has launched an historical themed 1840 Afternoon Tea, designed by Executive Chef William Drabble of in-house Michelin Star Restaurant Seven Park Place. Transporting guests to Victorian times in the hotel’s elegant bar area, the tea comprises of a selection of traditional sandwiches and classic cakes of that period, keeping its originality but with slight modern-day twist. The concept of Afternoon Tea first began in when Anna Russell, the Duchess of Bedford and great friend of Queen Victoria, started inviting friends to join her at Woburn Abbey for cakes and tea in the mid-afternoon to stop hunger pangs between lunch and dinner. The ritual of Afternoon Tea quickly became established in upper class households and it wasn’t long before Queen Victoria became a keen advocate of the concept. St. James’s Hotel and Club wanted to capture and celebrate these traditions based on authentic recipes and favourites of Queen Victoria. Drabble was inspired by recipes by the Head Chef at St. James’s Club in the early 1800s, Charles Elmé Francatelli, who then went on to be Chief Cook for Queen Victoria in 1840 and later became the General manager of St. James’s Club. The exquisite tea, where the menu is housed in an old encyclopaedia, features highlights from Victorian times including a wonderfully light Tipsy Cake, soaked in sherry and served with creamy custard, Filbert Cream Tart, profiteroles, zingy lemon drizzle cake and a classic Victoria Sponge cake. Savoury delights include a range of traditional sandwiches such as St James Ham and Alberts Chutney, created from home cured and smoked ham and served with Albert’s Victorian Chutney; Ox Tongue Sandwich with ustard Butter Crayfish ayonnaise and Watercress; Cucumber and Egg and Cress.

1840 Afternoon Tea costs £40.00 per person.

A real highlight of the beautifully prepared tea are the Cheshire cheese scones, made with the oldest recorded British cheese, served along with fresh plain scones, jam and clotted cream. Served on Victorian inspired crockery and best accompanied by cup of an exclusive fine loose tea blend from The East India Company, that’s after a glass of St ames’s Hotel and Club’s finest champagne of course, making the tea is the perfect post exhibition stop. As well as the specially themed tea, St. James’s Hotel and Club is also offering a special package to create an exclusive historical experience for guests. The package includes entrance to the new pera Passion, Power Politics the first exhibition at the A’s purpose-built Sainsbury Gallery), the 1840 Afternoon Tea and an overnight stay for two.

COCKTAIL COLUMN

Calabrese’s Cocktails with Gerry Calabrese

East End drinks maverick Gerry Calabrese has built a reputation as one of the greats in London’s bar scene. From bartending in top London venues such as Lab, Dust, and Sex in the City he went on in 2008 to launch his own multi award winning East End bar, The Hoxton Pony followed by most recently in 2016 Wringer and Mangle situated in the neighbouring London Fields, to much critical acclaim. His pedigree has also seen him act as a drinks columnist as well as consultant and event planner for numerous high profile private clients including iles Deacon, warovs i, eroni Nastro urro, Channel , and ulberry.

With the holidays just around the corner, the country starts slowing down as we embrace the idea of a few days off of work, catching up with friends and spending some quality time with family. It’s one of the best times of the year to hang out with loved ones and grab a drink, especially when you have it with dinner. The festive season is typically a time for showing off and celebrating, so aside from the ever reliable Snowball cocktail of Advocat and lemonade and small glass of sherry for Nan, what do we drink? When you have guests over for dinner, welcome them with a glass of bubbles to set the mood, any sparkling wine will do but I would stick with Cava, Prosecco or if you’re feeling generous Champagne. Before dinner, wet their appetite with an aperitif, here I would suggest a dry gin martini, 15ml of Dry Vermouth and 60ml of your chosen Gin. You can make the martinis unique by adding a few drops of bitters, garnish with a lemon zest. Lavender works wonderfully, but there are a range of weird and wonderful bitters out there to choose from, ranging from your traditional angostura, to leather, tobacco, bergamot the list goes on. When you’ve sat down to eat your best bet is to dress the table with a bottle or two of wine. While it is commonly accepted that you should pair your wine to the meal you’re eating, typically a light Pinot Grigio for roast chicken or turkey or a Merlot for darker meat like roast beef or gammon. I find that if you’re dining in a small group, pairing the meal to the wine is quite important,

however in large parties, an option of either is usually a safe bet. Just remember, when choosing your wine, try not to go for anything with over powering flavours, you won’t want wine that with overshadow the taste of the meal. Between dinner and dessert, offer something light and refreshing, I find that a good Bucks Fizz is a great option. The holidays are the perfect occasion to sup a Bucks Fizz, 1/3 freshly squeezed orange juice and 2/3 champagne. Not to be confused with a mimosa which is equal parts. During dessert, serve something indulgent, such as a Brandy Alexander, which is 20ml of double cream, 20ml crème de cacao and 50ml of Cognac, shaken and served up in a coupette - delicious! When everything is winding down, suggest a coffee or a digestif to help your glorious meal settle and round off the evening. A good digestif especially after such a hearty meal should perk you up, so something like an Irish Coffee, a strong brewed, hot coffee, poured over a brown sugar cube, 50ml of Irish whiskey and topped with a layer of whipped cream or double cream float, garnished with coffee beans. If you’re looking for something a little simpler such as Chartreuse or my personal favourite, Salvatore Calabrese’s Liquore di Limone. Remember, when you’re out drinking this festive season, be kind to your bartenders and servers, it’s the busiest time of year for these guys, and they are all working extra hard to make sure you can all have a good time and enjoy yourselves! City Social Located in the heart of the City on the 2 th floor of Tower 2, ason Atherton’s Michelin Starred City Social serves up modern British food alongside stunning skyline views. Art deco style interiors set the tone, dark woods mingle with sumptuous leather banquette style seating all positioned facing out to ensure that the floor-to-ceiling windows are the star of the show, framing the iconic London skyline perfectly. Guests can expect fantastic views of the likes of the Gherkin and the Cheesegrater, making this the ideal location for special occasions and business meals alike. In keeping with the elegant interiors, City Social’s menu showcases British produce using the only the very finest ingredients on offer throughout the seasons. Varied and interesting, you will be hard pressed to settle for one. Highlights to start include; Orkney scallops, cep fregola, smoked pancetta, black garlic, lardo di Colonnata; Brixham crab, Caledonian prawn, pickled kohlrabi, pear, spring onion and sesame; and Pig’s trotter & ham hock with crispy Lancashire black pudding, apple, Madeira. enerously portioned the dishes are beautifully executed, offering style and substance – something few do well to create in a fine dining establishment. oving on to mains, and the menu also offers a pasta and rice section where diners can opt for a small plate or larger. Squid ink risotto, confit lemon, coastal herbs, aged Sardinian Pecorino; and Warm fruits of the sea, linguini and shellfish cooking juices are just some of the many options. Other standout choices include the delectable Cornish sea bass, deep-fried oyster, cucumber, cauliflower, oyster velout and Lincolnshire rabbit saddle, Parma ham, trompettes, spelt, lovage emulsion, black garlic. Venison, lamb, and steak from the grill also feature, while the Heritage potato & caramelised onion terrine, celeriac, candied walnuts makes for a lovely vegetarian option. The dessert menu is equally tempting with decadent Rum Baba to Hazelnut Plaisir sucre with chocolate syrup and milk ice cream, so ensure to leave room. City Social’s newly introduced cheese trolley selection is one of the best in the City so perfect for those who don’t enjoy a sweet. As to be expected the wine list is large and varied and the restaurant’s knowledgeable sommelier is on hand to help pair with your chosen dishes. Service is done with a flourish and together with this flair and food to match City Social is certainly one to keep in mind for any important upcoming dates where you want to impress.

Laverstoke Mill

The Home of Bombay Sapphire There’s been a huge surge of popularity in gin for a long time now and what better way to enjoy and learn about the spirit itself than at the Bombay Sapphire Distillery right here in the UK. Set in the picturesque Hampshire countryside in a leafy conservation area astride the River Test and just 60 miles from London sits Laverstoke Mill. With records of the mill dating back as far as the 1086 Doomsday Book it is a site with an incredibly rich history. For over 225 years, Laverstoke Mill was a handcrafted paper mill that printed the watermarked banknote paper for the bank of England and British Empire. During Queen Victoria’s reign, it rose prominently, and Laverstoke Mill began making bank notes for England’s newly acquired lands, including India, which ties in rather nicely with its new occupants. The Bombay Spirits Company purchased the mill in 2010 following a period of neglect and began redevelopment work immediately with the help of Heatherwick Studio - the team behind the Olympic Cauldron and new London buses. Restoration work to the mill is ongoing, however the work undertaken and planned has been carefully planned to preserve the natural ecology and heritage of the site that lies within a Conservation Area and Site of Special Scientific Interest. Records show that there has been a mill

on site in Laverstoke since at least AD but first official records show Laverstoke Mill as a corn mill in the Domesday Book of 1086. It was in 1719 that a French Huguenot named Henry Portal leased and converted the mill to make the finest quality handmade paper. Over 1000 years on and having been at the mill since 2014, Bombay Sapphire is committed to building a sustainable future. Ensuring the site was renovated in the most sympathetic manner possible, only a few ugly, nonhistoric corrugated iron buildings were removed leaving all of the original buildings intact. What is most impressive about this project is the level at which they have managed to integrate such a protected, historic site with one of the most sustainable, state-of-the-art distillery facilities in the world. Sustainability is high priority to Bombay Sapphire at Laverstoke Mill, not only due to the protected status of the Site of Special Scientific Interest, but for the future of the brand. As a result, the design of this low carbon, BREEAM Building Research stablishment nvironmental Assessment Method assessed, flagship distillery has a multi-functional renewable energy strategy and is the first ever refurbishment project to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating, anywhere in the

REVIEW world and is also the first distillery to be B EEA utstanding’ certified. This is showcased in the many initiatives the company is put into place and include a Biomass boiler that provides heat and hot water using botanical by-products of the distillation process as a fuel source; rainwater harvesting; recycled roof tiles from the original buildings; and the reuse of ash produced by the biomass boiler which is then used to fertilise the soil on local farms. The iver Test, the purest chalk-stream in the , also flows through the site and with it brings a unique wetland habitat throughout the distillery. Swans, Bats, ingfishers and tters are just some of the many species inhabiting the river and prior to construction Bombay Sapphire worked tirelessly to protect this natural environment by taking measures such as temporarily rehoming over fish after capture by hand a fish guard in front of the hydro-electric turbine; and the installation of bat boxes and roof access in various buildings on the site to encourage repopulation. It’s worth noting that no water is used from the River Test during the distillation process either. It’s not just about creating fantastic gin the distillery and its staff are completely committed to creating a positive impact on the local environment and community. All new buildings on the site have been specially designed to blend in with the current structure and one new outhouse in particular - the Glass House is a unique and stunning piece of architecture.

This is a remarkable site and unlike any distillery you may have seen before and thankfully, it is open for the public to enjoy. You can enjoy an all-encompassing day taking in the entire process from land to bottle and you might get a few surprises along the way. A visit to the distillery to witness this first hand is a must and of course a great gift for a gin fanatic! There are a few ticket package options from self-guided tours to cocktail masterclasses, however

we highly recommend the Ultimate Experience. Starting with a welcome drink in the beautiful Sapphire Blue room overlooking the Glass House, guests are given an introduction to the brand by the knowledgeable Senior Brand Ambassador Sam Carter. Highly personable and extremely dedicated to the brand, Sam has worked for Bombay Sapphire for a number of years. There’s not much he hasn’t been involved in from creating new blends to flitting around the world to train other ambassadors on how to make the perfect cocktail using one of the brand’s four iconic

gins - Bombay Sapphire, Star of Bombay, Bombay Dry Gin and Bombay East. After lunch using locally sourced ingredients, Sam will take the small group for a VIP experience behind the scenes in India House and a tour of the distillery experience. Having absorbed all that information, you’re invited to get involved in a cocktail masterclass creating two cocktails and sampling each of the gins to really get a taste of the varying botanicals used in each. At the end, having completed the tour and interactive experience to see which botanicals appeal most to you individually, you can take your card down to the atmospheric Mill Bar (formerly the vault) and staff will be on hand to mix you up a signature cocktail based on your botanical preferences. All this and you receive a complimentary gift! The Ultimate Experience is the most in-depth package available at the ill and is on offer one Saturday a month, priced at . per person and lasts approximately five hours. TheDark Side Drawing in the younger crowd has become a key in the development of a number of marques over recent years, but none more so than Rolls-Royce. Seen primarily by many as chauffeur cars or for old money individuals living in a country manor, the brand have been keen to transform preconceived ideas and encourage younger, wealthy individuals to their cars. Models such as the Wraith were borne from this idea four years ago, but that wasn’t quite enough for Rolls-Royce. They wanted something that could cross between model lines and illustrate the brands ability to offer something exciting and unique. The Black Badge series is the result. Now including the Ghost, Wraith and Dawn, the series is gradually growing. With it comes an increased portfolio and platform with which to encourage those new potential buyers. Delivering a distinguishable aesthetic and slight performance tweaks, this series has been specifically developed for the younger markets - something that has been otherwise unheard of at the Goodwood home. Despite branching precariously out for the first time, it has been an essential move for the company to avoid neglecting a huge new market that has the means to enjoy one - or more - of their cars. The social media boom has produced an enormous number of individuals who are now in a position to flick through the Rolls-Royce catalogue at will and with an ever increasing salary pot across global sports, infinitely mind-boggling possibilities for entrepreneurs and ‘new money’ exploding across the world, it is the ideal time to offer up something new. Much like Sir Malcolm Campbell, Howard Hughes, Keith Moon, Yves Saint Laurent, Muhammad Ali and indeed Charles Rolls before them, today’s generation of young, self-empowered, self-confident rule-breakers are just as uncompromising and unapologetic in their choice of living and lifestyle. Demanding the very best from a luxury motor car, the Black Badge series appeals to a darker, more assertive, confident and demanding aesthetic of these customers. It is the perfect way for the two - otherwise juxtaposed worlds - to combine and the British marque have achieved it in a way that only they could. Maintaining the heart and substance of the brands icons, Black Badge simply adapts to its customers needs with subtle yet substantive changes whether in the performance department or in aesthetics. Changing the Parthenon Grille, famous Double R logo and the Spirit of Ecstasy would seem like a step too far for some considering they are the embodiment of the brand, but that is precisely what the designers at Rolls-Royce decided when faced with the ‘Black Badge’ brief. Inverting the Double R logo to become silver on black, while the ‘Flying Lady’ is transformed, not in design, posture nor material, but in colour to represent the owner’s dark obsession. She mutates into a high-gloss black vamp, proudly scything through the night-time cityscape, supported by darkening of chrome surfaces such as the front grille and exhaust pipes.

You would be forgiven for thinking this was simply a case of changing the face and putting a new price on it, but when you begin to truly understand the lengths RR have gone to for Black Badge, you will quickly become aware that this is no PR stunt. The wheels for example are unique to every Black Badge commissioned and have been developed over four years comprising no less than 22 layers of carbon fibre - which are doubled over to create 44 layers of strength - combined with an aircraft-grade aluminium hub which is bonded to the rim using aerospace strength titanium fasteners. Nobody in their right mind would go through that much effort for no reason. Of course, they look spectacular too. This is a car that doesn’t shy away from its beginnings, it was after all developed to be the ultimate ‘limousine’ for those who enjoyed being driven as much as driving, instead, it embraces the

renowned ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ and instead relies on the incredible Rolls-Royce engineers to subtly alter and adapt the car to perform in the way any Black Badge owner would expect. Using the flexibility of the 6.6 litre V12 engine, the engineers have managed to make Ghost Black Badge a little more menacing. Subtle engine output modifications see power increase by 40hp to 603hp and torque by 60Nm to 840Nm compared to ‘standard’ Ghost, whilst upgrades to the 8-speed automatic transmission give Ghost Black Badge an added sense of urgency in how it delivers its power. Everything about this car has been specifically tailored to a new audience which can only mean good things for the brands future. Who knows, there may even be enough influencers coming through the ranks to encourage some specifically developed models down the road. rolls-roycemotorcars.com

1 amborghini Urraco P300 POA

Limited Run for the ‘Little Bull’ 1977 Lamborghini Urraco P300

Inkeeping with the Lamborghini tradition, the Urraco’s name was borne from bullfighting, however it would turn out to lack much fight in the real world. The much improved P which was introduced in 1974 brought with it a new 3-litre V8 which outperformed its V12 cousin. Along with improved transmission and suspension modifications, this was the best rraco in the series, however, it would still see a relatively early demise. Thanks to strict import regulations in the US, the Urraco P300 was not allowed to be sold in the country. They did receive the lesser P250 Typo III model, but with just 180bhp, it wasn’t really considered to be a Lamborghini. Developed as a 2+2 coupé with body design by Marcello Gandini - at the time working

for Carrozzeria Bertone - the Urraco, rather than being another supercar like the Lamborghini iura, was more affordable and targeted the contemporary Ferrari Dino and Maserati Merak. As a result, less than 2 P ’s were ever built, so to find one on sale today in this kind of condition is rather a rare event. This example from 1977 is a left-hand drive model presented in black coachwork with black leather interior and is in excellent condition. Due to such limited production numbers, today this is an incredibly rare and desirable car that is sure to be snapped up before too long. If you are a Lamborghini collector or are simply in the market for a unique opportunity in the classic car market, this is definitely worth a look.

SAVILLS

How Open-Plan Living Became the New Norm with Jasper Colliver, Head of Residential, Savills Wandsworth

Traditional period homes were originally designed to separate formal and family life, meaning that the kitchen, living room and dining room were all kept apart. However, in recent years these homes, as well as new builds, have increasingly been reconfigured in favour of open-plan living. In Wandsworth, for example, the majority of homes we have on the market at any given time incorporate some aspect of open-plan space. In fact, the interiors of these otherwise typical Victorian homes are almost unrecognisable when compared with their original design.

There are many reasons for this change. For one, open-plan living areas can make the home feel more inviting as it flows naturally and tends to make small spaces seem much larger. It is also a more sociable way of living and entertaining. Gone are the days of hosting a dinner party and being stuck in the kitchen away from your guests: today those guests are in the kitchen with you, socialising and taking an interest in how their food is being prepared. This type of layout is also particularly beneficial for families who have small children they want to keep an eye on while they prepare meals.

Savills Wandsworth | 020 8877 1222 | savills.co.uk

SAVILLS An open-plan configuration can be advantageous if you are struggling to trade up the housing ladder. Savills latest research shows that the average cost of moving from a three- to fourbedroom property is over £164,000 or a 63 per cent premium, and from a four- to five-bedroom is an additional per cent. Creating an open-plan home, perhaps with an added extension, can help families to enhance the space that they already have and potentially gain some too. However, there are some drawbacks. Firstly, if you are planning a redesign you may be restricted by any load-bearing walls. Removing walls also takes away an element of privacy. Equally, having one large, open room may not always be such a good idea if, for example, you can’t shut off smells and sounds from the kitchen or if you struggle to heat the space in winter. That said, many homeowners are now addressing the negative aspects of open-plan living and taking steps to partially reverse the trend. It has become fashionable to ‘bridge the gap’ through the addition of moveable walls which offer functionality and versatility. The idea is to provide a way to compartmentalise

an area while still giving you open space when you want it. If you are thinking of taking the plunge and creating an openplan home it may be worth considering whether it is going to work for you all the time or if a more versatile way of living might be the more practical option.

Jeypore Road, Wandsworth SW18 A beautifully presented, four bedroom family house which is arranged over three floors. At the front of the house is the double reception room, while to the rear is the open plan kitchen and dining room arranged around a central island unit. The current owners have carefully refurbished this space to create bright and spacious family living and entertaining space.

As one year ends and another begins, we thought I’d take a look at what’s happened in the E14 market over the last 12 months, and what a year it has been. It’s true that something of a ‘cold front’ has been moving across most of the country, but the strong fundamentals which underpin the E14 market mean that we’re well placed to weather any storm. Using simple unweighted averages, the price of a home in E14 is now £504,800, which is 18.1 per cent more affordable than the regional average. Over the last 12 months this has risen by 3.1 per cent compared with a rise of 5.2 per cent in the region as a whole, so the area has underperformed the market in that sense. Since 2000, the average level of house price growth has been 8.3 per cent per year.

Year There were 1,152 sales in our area in the last year, compared with 2,772 in the 12 months which preceded it. Comparisons with 2016 need to be handled with care because of the big spike in sales before the stamp duty rise in April. Quarterly analyses of house price movements are a great way of seeing year-on-year changes. This chart is a particularly useful way to look at the market because it strips out seasonality, which can distort things and lead us to show things that might be inaccurate.

In this analysis we've looked at how sales of property types have stacked up over time (literally!). For each of the last eight years we show what number of sales are accounted for by flats, terraces, semidetached and detached homes. This analysis is very useful because it shows not only the total number of sales, but the types of properties it comprises.

The profile of wealth is a fairly good gauge of the day-to-day reality of residents in the local housing market. The government has drawn attention to the large numbers of people in the country who are 'JAM's or 'just about managing', and have pledged to help their property aspirations in the 2017 Budget. This chart shows the profile of our area based on their socio-demographic profile.

Peonies: The Perfect Present with Alec White, Peony Specialist at Primrose Hall Nursery

As the nights have started to draw in and the cold frosty mornings have emerged, gardeners and peonies across the country are settling down for their dormant period over the winter months. Like the gardeners who have spent their energy outside in the warmer months of the year, producing magnificent displays of colour and beauty, peonies like to settle down around the Christmas period and recuperate too. During the autumn months a light tending to the peonies is all that was needed. Herbaceous peonies may have looked like they were dying above the ground; they were actually preparing the flower buds for next year. They should have been cut back about 2. cm from the ground, with the dead foliage and leaf litter disposed of to prevent the spread of disease. Any well-established herbaceous peonies that a gardener was considering to move or split should have definitely done so by now. And those lucky gardeners with tree peonies could have given them a light pruning. But now the flurry of autumnal activities and vibrant colours has come to an end.

Whilst the cosy gardeners sit inside their warm homes reflecting upon the glorious year in their garden, some may worry about their protecting their gorgeous peonies from the harsh winter elements. But there is no need to worry; peonies will survive the wild weather of the English winter as long as they are in free draining soil and remarkably they are hardy to about -20C! Peonies are so hardy that they actually flower better after a cold winter. It is during these cold months that they store up their energy to burst into action in the warmth of spring and produce the most glorious flowers An easy to grow, and low maintenance plant that produces absolutely outstanding blooms in the warmer months! Christmas is almost upon us! That joyous time of year‌ and what better gift than a peony?! Even for those who are not particularly green-fingered in the garden, a peony would become a cherished gift that could last a lifetime and is so easy to grow! For those nervous to venture out into the garden, a peony is an easy and ultimately very rewarding plant to start with! There are only 3 rules for any gardener to remember!

FLOWERS

Do not plant your peony too deep! The tuberous roots should not be deeper than about 2. cm below the surface. If they are buried too deep it will produce the fancy foliage but with prevent the plant from flowering Plant it somewhere sunny! Like the gardeners, peonies like a nice amount of sunshine, though it will be fine in some shade, it will be happiest in as much warm sunlight as it can get in the great English summer. As long as the peony lives in fertile and free-draining soil, the peony will thrive. These hardy plants are not generally too fussy about the soil and are quite happy in chalky or clay soils provided that they are not sat in waterlogged soil during their dormant winters. Not only are they easy to maintain, these plants get better with age. As they mature, they will produce more flowers every year. And these flowers are absolutely amazing ne reason that peonies are so outstanding and a definite focal point of the garden is the magnificent size of the flowers they produce. Some varieties such as the intersectional peonies can produce flowers the size of dinner plates! It is not only the size of the flowers, but colours that capture the attention of any person in the garden. There are single, semidouble and double flowers of colours ranging from hot reds, to icy whites, from vibrant yellows to soft pinks and everything in between - even some with stripes! And could these plants get any better? The majority of these immense floral displays are accompanied by wonderful fragrances ne such bloom is the sweetly scented double white flowers that sometimes has a pink tinge to the centre called Paeonia lactiflora ‘Gardenia’. Not only does ‘Gardenia’s elegant white colour and sweet perfume make it stand out in the garden, like many peonies,

it makes an excellent cut flower meaning that they can be on enjoyed both outside and inside the home! Furthermore, these gorgeous plants do not only produce the exquisite display of blooms in summer and the vibrant coloured foliage in autumn, peonies are a plant that can last a lifetime many varieties known to survive a century. Considering all these facts, it is unmistakable that peonies are the perfect present.
