FROM THE EDITOR
Now that we are settled in to the new year or at least trying to act as though we are, it is time to start looking forward to the months ahead. Spring is just around the corner and from fashion houses to travel agents we are recieving an assault on the senses aiming to entice us into purchasing something. There is a simple answer; make a single purchase for a plane ticket and escape it all. Unfortunately this isn’t a realistic option for most, so we will have to endure the onslaught for at least the next month or so. We do have some exciting pieces for you to enjoy that may be able to ease the blow including an Italian escape that is worth buying that plane ticket for. The tranquil isle of Sardinia is rivaled by very few especially when you find the most incredible resort nestled right on its northern coast. And thanks to its location, you can easily enjoy a long weekend too, so you can still get home in time to continue your much less relaxing, sunny and turquoise sea filled life in London. Escape is always high on the list with studies indicating that some people actually enjoy simply going through the
process of dreaming up holidays without even booking them, but there are other ways. As London dwellers, we often forget about the abundance of options right on the doorstep. The standard of hotels in London is up there with the best, so why not take a little city break in your own city for a change and explore those hidden parts of the capital you simply didn’t know were there. You will always be welcomed back to one of the incredibly luxurious spas in the plethora of five star hotels in which to relax. If escape is out of the picture in its entirety then you will have to take some less evasive action and face the issue head-on. So clear out your winter wardrobe, wipe clean the bathroom cabinets and prepare to restock with the latest seasons trends. You can even add to your watch collection courtesy of this years SIHH in Geneva which saw the launch of endless pieces worthy of any collection. Ken has given a round up of his favourite 10 though, so they would be a good place to start. And you know what they say...retail therapy is the best kind of therapy.

FINANCE WITH MATT GOLD
Global stock markets start 2016 with a nose dive Our financial insider reviews the global markets
FTSE 100 index ended 2015 at 6,242.32 and took a nose dive to 5,673.58 closing level on 20th January. That was a 9.1% drop in less than a month. As of 25th January, FTSE 100 recovered a little bit from the low and closed at 5,877. In the same period from 31st December, 2015 to 25th January, 2016, Eurostoxx 50 Index dropped 8.1%, Dow Jones dropped 8.8%, Nasdaq Composite dropped 8.7%, Japan Nikkei 225 dropped 10.1%, China Shanghai Composite dropped 17.0%. This is a truly global sell off and there is no escape. Institutional selling has to be part of it. What happened? Did Santa send the wrong presents to the fund managers? One explanation is the butterfly effect of falling oil prices is hurting oil rich countries war chest. Hence these countries are selling their mutual funds and overseas investment to make ends meet. Saudi Arabia has been withdrawing billions from markets and it is considering to list Aramco, its state-owned oil giant. Oil price is at 13-year lows and went below USD 30 a barrel. US, Russia and Saudi Arabia are neck to neck as the 3 biggest oil producers in the world, each at above 10 million barrels per day. For countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela who are living off petro dollar, a lower oil price could also force them to sell more to maintain cash flow. The 13-member oil cartel OPEC led by Saudi Arabia abandoned its policy of restraining production to control oil prices in 2014 and some of these countries are pumping faster than ever to pay for their bills. Iran, with the world’s forth largest oil reserve base, is ready to pump up its oil production as sanctions against it are lifted. Such increasing supply put oil price and producers’ financial health in a downward spiral.
Let’s also point fingers to US uplifted its 40-year ban on oil exports. US oil producers can export crude oil after a surprise change in policy that was strongly opposed by President Obama and fellow Democrats. In December 2015, politicians in US Congress made a compromise. Democrats agreed to lift the 40year ban on US crude oil exports. Republicans agreed to extend tax subsidies for wind and solar by 5 years. The 30 percent tax credit for solar was going to expire in 2016 and the tax credit for wind expired in 2014. The effects of these policy changes are estimated to be USD 25 billion on the wind and solar energy sectors. Most US oil producers need a oil price at USD 40-50 per barrel to have a profitable business. So with oil struggling at USD 30 a barrel, most US oil producers are not going to produce much and definitely not to export any oil overseas. However, this means oil price could be capped at USD 50 or so because US production can significantly increase supply when pricing is right. As of 25th January, GBP lost 3.3% against USD since end of 2015 and it is at a 7-year low. Basically, GBP is catching up with other currencies and giving in to the strong USD. As all major currencies are weakening against the USD to increase export competitiveness and release downward pressure on asset prices, the GBP eventually followed. The strong USD finally transferred to a US stock market correction which sent a quiver to stock markets all over the world. China’s energy demand is growing at the slowest pace since late 1990s and growth in energy-intensive sectors such as steel, iron and cement collapsed. It has waved goodbye to double digit economic growth and trying to keep up 6% GDP growth a year. The Chinese Yuan got its place in the Special Drawing Rights basket, a reserve currency basket decided by the International Monetary Fund last year and they must be exhausted. The Yuan has fallen 1.3% year to date against USD, 4.1% since end of October 2015, 6% since 10 August 2015. The Yuan depreciated 2.9% in a single day on 11 August 2015. A weakening economy, a falling stock market and a falling currency in China reminds people of what happened to Russia. The BRIC countries have all lost their steam and the world economy is like a plane with an American captain with all engines stalled, but running on reserve fuel. Perhaps the world economy is not crashing like in 2008 but certainly January was a hard landing. Just hope that it was a landing and not just going through turbulence.

Kessler’s 10 Best at SIHH Ken Kessler
Forgive this burst of pure ego, but I’m gonna be completely selfish for my round-up of SIHH’s best: these are 10 pieces I would actually buy if I had the wherewithal. Yes, there may have been more innovative, more expensive, more relevant or more commercial launch subjects, but – alphabetically – this is what left me drooling, panting and wishing I was on the take.
1. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Supersonnerie
In my other life, I am a reviewer of hifi equipment. My life revolves around sound, especially sound quality, so the idea of a minute repeater attempting to elevate both the sonic characteristics and the volume (or sound pressure level, if you want to be tech-y) just had to capture my imagination. A-P has used the massive Royal Oak as a test-
bed before: this time, they’re exploiting its size to create a larger sound chamber and more musical notes. Maybe one day, A-P will even reveal in decibels how much louder it is than the minute repeaters they claim that it exceeds. I almost forgot: it’s also a chronograph and a tourbillon. This is a dream combination for the watch-loving audiophile. audemarspiguet.com

2. Cartier Crash Skeleton Red Gold OK, it’s a bit small by today’s standards, and maybe even girly, but the Crash in all of its Salvador Dalí-esque weirdness is exactly the tonic for someone who wants something “different” but who - like me - has no time whatsoever for ridiculous complications. (i.e. Out of 150 watches in my collection, only one is moonphase.) Launched last year in platinum, here it is in red gold. Strap it on and try NOT to stare longingly at it. cartier.co.uk
3. De Bethune DB25 World Traveller If you use a GMT, travel more than a couple of times a year to other time zones and need to keep track of night-and-day in other locations, this is the classiest tool ever. The watch takes the language of world timers since the 1930s, with the city names on the dial, but adds a “mystery” feature in the form of a ball that shows the time in a second zone, places the date around the circumference of the dial, read with its own tiny pointer and does all this without sub-dials. debethune.ch
4. H. Moser Endeavour Small Seconds “Bryan Ferry” Most brands use celebrity ambassadors just to hook the gullible: pay some silver-screen schmuck $2m a year and, hell, yeah, he’ll wear your watch. Not H. Moser nor Bryan Ferry. The watch brand and the rock icon got along so famously, realising that their views on taste, aesthetics and style were so in sync that he actually designed a 100-examples-only limited edition. Ferry devised a sublime, timeonly device, showing his immunity to complications. It is so suave that donning it is like slipping into a pair of Berlutis. h-moser.com
5. IWC Mk XVIII OK, so I worship IWC’s “Mk”-series pilots’ watches and own a Mk X and a Mk 11 (and, no, I don’t know why the Mk 11 is the only written in Arabic numerals…). The Mk XVII with its three-window date was a fussy exception to the rule of the “Mk” models, which is “legibility über alles”. For the Mk. XVIII, the brand has rediscovered the purity of the earlier models, with the date in a discreet window at 3 o’clock. Offered with a choice of strap or bracelet, and with a white dial instead of the more normal black, the IWC Mk XVIII is as “true” a pilot’s watch as money can buy. A classic. iwc.com
6. Laurent Ferrier Galet Traveller Bleu Nuit Already regarded as one of the classiest brands to emerge this century, Laurent Ferrier is one of those makers that eschews bling. The company’s two-time-zone watch for travellers shows its second zone and date in small windows, but they couldn’t resist this nod to the travel watches of the past, with maps on their dials. Thing is, Laurent Ferrier took a different route and showed the world at night. Coolest of all: the picked out the cities exactly as seen by their illumination. laurentferrier.ch
7. Montblanc TimeWalker ExoTourbillon Minute Chronograph Chronographs normally feature a main dial for the time and a bunch of sub-dials - as many as four - to serve the stopwatch functionality. That just won’t do for Montblanc, at least, not when it includes their ExoTourbillon. Because they wanted to cut away a portion of the dial, the “real estate” for sub-dials has been reduced. So they made the hours-and-minutes dial smaller, set the date inside it concentrically, placed the counters at 4 and 8 o’clock and gave pride of place to the tourbillon. Normally, tourbillons can be a bit fey. This one is simply bad-ass. montblanc.com
8. Panerai PAM00663 Luminor 1950 3 Days Acciaio Panerai showed a healthy eight or so new models, including a set of two reinterpretations of coveted models from the 1990s, but this vintage watch addict fell for the Luminor 1950 with chocolate dial. This is, of course, something of a giggle for cynics, as brown dials – called “tropical” by collectors – are actually black dials that faded, but they look so good, and ooze with such an air of antiquity that they’re worth more than those in pristine nick. Chunky and purposeful like all Panerais, but that colour – wow! panerai.com
9. Parmigiani Fleurier Bugatti My bias knows no bounds: You could put the Bugatti badge on a weekold pizza and I would salivate. The Bugatti Super Sport Sapphire is the latest in the on-going series of watches tied in with the supercars, a “deluxe” version of a watch that is already so spectacular as to defy convention. Parmigiani has taken the radical Super Sport, made 19 of the movement’s components, including the bridges and plates, entirely out of red gold and housed it in a case made entirely of sapphire. Thus, as Bugattis show off their engines, so does the matching watch now evoke such exhibitionism. parmigiani.ch

10. Richard Mille RMS05 Pen
Sometimes, you need a break from watches, but not too big a departure. Richard Mille has taken the guts of a watch and adapted it to “power” a fountain pen. It is so over-the-top that you want to shake some sense into him, but it is so visually arresting and tactile (thanks to the use of exotic materials) that you’ll try to find the £80k or so needed – I kid you not – to watch a nib exit a pen barrel over the course of 10 seconds. Utterly mad, but utterly desirable. richardmille.com

“Everyone I take upstairs to the workshop to see how our pieces are made has been astonished and often, profoundly moved by the tremendous work and love that has gone into each piece. This is what I always hope really good jewellery will achieve, and the reaction to our designs is a testament to the skills of the amazing team here.” Theo Fennell
The Art of Imagination Founded in 1 2, Theo Fennell the brand has been renowned for their imaginative, eclectic, unusual and amazingly crafted pieces ever since. And while the jewels are crafted using traditional materials, they are anything but conventional. The man behind the magic is of course Theo himself who possesses arguably the most imaginative mind in the jewellery world. Lending themselves to unique pieces, the ideas produced by Theo and his team every so often reach the
realms of the wider public - being available as more than a single piece that is. eleased this month, the spectacular Two Peas in a Pod’ piece is every bit living up to the Theo Fennell name. Crafted with yellow gold, tsavorite and diamond, the ‘pod’ is a magestic pendant in its own right, but a simple pendant this is not. Thanks to the added level of thinking in the workshop, the pod gently surrounds two chrome diopside peas. A stunning addition to any collection and worthy of wear at any time.

Very Big Pilot’s Watch For 75 years, the historic Big Pilot’s Watch (52-calibre T.S.C.) was the largest wristwatch ever made at IWC in Schaffhausen. Now, IWC Schaffhausen have unveiled its successor: with an incredible 55-millimetre case diameter, the Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 55 eclipses a record that was set back in 1940. And, like its big brother, the Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 48 looks very much like the historic original, but makes a few more concessions to modern ideas of aesthetics and comfort.
With a case diameter of millimetres, the Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch follows on directly from the Big Pilot’s Watch of 1 40. This enormous eye-catcher, available in a limited edition of ust 100 watches, is aimed primarily at collectors and lovers of authentic pilot’s watches. With a slightly smaller but still imposing case diameter of 4 millimetres, the Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 4 , which is limited to 1,000 pieces, is a practical alternative for everyday use. But it is not only the watches’ size so much as their unmistakable visual features that will make the hearts of watch connoisseurs race. From the dial design and colour of the luminescent numerals to the shape of the propeller-like hands, cone-shaped crown and historic leather straps, it is as if the Heritage watches were taking us on a journey back in time to the pioneering days of aviation. Except that now we have state-of-the-art IWC watch technology. The engineers at IWC were keen to maintain as many features from the original as possible, except this time it is in titanium. The lighter material is a nod to modern-day possibilities: weighing less than 1 0 grams, the watch is not quite as heavy on the wrist as the 1 3 grams of the original in stainless steel. Back then, si e offered important advantages. Firstly, it meant that the watch could
have as big a movement as possible, guaranteeing the precision required for navigation or observer’s watches. Secondly, a large dial was better able to accommodate clear numerals and offered much greater legibility. Back in those days, the dial design was very much based on historic cockpit instruments. Anything not absolutely necessary was abandoned to ensure that important information could be read off quickly and easily, even in poor visibility. The dial was matte black, and IWC’s watchmakers had coated the big Arabic numerals and indices showing the minutes with a thick layer of beige-coloured radium. The health ha ard posed by radioactive luminescent coatings was only recognized years later, at which point radium was replaced by harmless materials. The current Super-LumiNova®* coating guarantees excellent legibility. As in the original, the chapter ring, Arabic numerals and propeller-like hands are beige. As is usual in an observer’s watch, the titanium case is sandblasted to eliminate reflections that might be detrimental to the watch’s legibility or betray the wearer’s position to the enemy. The watch movement itself is protected against magnetic fields by a soft-iron inner

case. The cone-shaped crown is a reminder of those early days of flying, when pilots in their unheated cockpits were forced to wear thick gloves. Back then, the crown needed to be unusually large and chunky to make setting and winding the watch possible even with gloves. And today, as in the past, the crown makes the daily ritual of winding the watch by hand a very special experience. With such a large crown, it would be easy to overwind and damage the mechanism, which for safety’s sake is equipped with a friction clutch to prevent this from happening. The IWC hand-wound 300 calibre features an elongated index for simple and precise setting of the active length of the spring, a highly effective shock absorption system and a 4 -hour power reserve. The case back has been kept decidedly simple the numbering from 01 100 to 100 100 is an unmistakable sign of this great watch’s exclusiveness. For the brown calfskin strap, the designers took their inspiration from the historic leather strap found on the Big Pilot’s Watch. This allowed the timepiece to be worn over a thick flying suit. The strap is divided in two and sewn together at the ends, which makes it impossible to drop the watch accidentally when putting it on your wrist. Then, as now, two rivets on the spring bar hold the strap together. fter all, some of the features that made the 1 40s Pilot’s Watch so special simply cannot be enhanced. iwc.com
Being a great classic means starting with a powerful design and being capable of self renewal. First launched in 1 2, the Navitimer handles these two aspects as deftly as a skilled pilot maneuvers his aircraft. In more than 0 years, it has established itself as a cult object for devotees of aviation and the doyenne of all mechanical chronographs produced worldwide. longside the flagship model with its black dial and silver counters, it also regularly adopts new and distinctive faces, such as that of the new Navitimer 01 Limited Edition. This exclusive instrument issued in a 1000-piece series is distinguished by its dark gray dial featuring a sunburst brushed finish that subtly offsets the black counters. The result is an original, technical and eminently masculine look enhanced by indications made using the “par épargne” technique against a pure silver backdrop. While the dial side with its famous circular aviation slide rule reflects Breitling’s privileged ties with the aeronautical world, the caseback provides a window onto another of the brand’s stronghold that explains its success among aviators: impressive mastery of mechanical chronograph movements. The Navitimer 01 Limited Edition is powered by Manufacture Breitling Caliber 01. This highperformance ‘engine’, entirely developed and produced in the company workshops and chronometer-certified by the COSC Swiss O cial Chronometer Testing Institute , is a guarantee of peerless precision and reliability. Echoing the special dial decoration, the oscillating weight visible through the transparent sapphire crystal caseback features a black coating lending an original touch. The Navitimer 01 Limited Edition is available with a steel bracelet, or with leather or crocodile leather straps in various colors. All of which represents abundant additional energy further propelling it on its legendary onward flight through time.

Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah
Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite ewellery. Official agents for many of the world’s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on Diamonds & precious stones. Established in 1982, New Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.
As an independent business, we curate the collection of brands we represent very carefully. I have always had a soft spot for aeger LeCoultre be it their history, the library of horological innovations or simply that they produce their watches for all to enjoy, there is something that makes it more than a brand but rather an institution. They have quietly made or helped create movements for many of the famous names in our industry, most notably producing the initial calibre’s that were present in Cartier’s first wristwatches, helping to set up the horological world as we know it today.
Respectively, their own watches have always been built on a story creating families and models that have the ability to last decades bypassing trends. The most famous exponent of this belief is the Reverso. Initially created in colonial India for polo players who requested a watch where the face could be reversible to stop the glass being smashed during wear on the polo field. This year celebrates the th anniversary of this wonderful creation, which has kept its association with polo but also now a family in its own right ranging from simple everyday models to the Grand Complications synonymous to Manufacture aeger LeCoultre. With this in mind, I would like to present a collection released in 201 but founded in 1 . That year commemorated the Manufacture’s 12 th anniversary but also International Geophysical ear where different nations came together to further investigate the fields within Geophysics, which is the study of the physical properties of the Earth and its surrounding environment including space. The original Geophysic was a durable watch created to withstand magnetic fields up to 00 Gauss and en oyed a thoroughly modern shock resistant movement. Specifically designed for exploration, these watches were taken to the Earth’s Northern and Southern poles as well as on board the famous nuclear powered Nautilus submarine. Ultimately, they have become collectors items in their own right given their historic significance. So, in 2014 a version of the original Geophysic was reissued in line with an industry focus on exploration and specifically anti-magnetivity as shown in olex’s Milgauss collection and Omega’s revolutionary Gauss model in their Seamaster qua Terra family. s a limited run, it typically sold out very quickly and 201 saw this famous
New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF
model become a family in its now right. Unlike other brands, this Geophysic was not simply ferried out using existing calibre’s to prey on a trend for all things retro. aeger LeCoultre have delivered a brand new True Second movement specifically designed for this new collection. In a very simplified explanation, which does not pay true homage to what goes in to creating such a new calibre, this movement essentially uses two balance wheels instead of one and the amplitude of the frequency at which the main wheel oscillates has been dramatically increased. Every automatic watch gives the illusion that the seconds hand sweeps but in fact it actually ticks six to seven seconds in one go creating the sweeping effect. s the frequency on the Geophysic has been increased, the accuracy of the movement responds accordingly causing the seconds hand to tick like a quart watch hence the name “True Second.” aeger LeCoultre are by no means the only watch brand to employ this particular type of movement but they are the first to
deliver it in such an accessible fashion, both in terms of decoration and most importantly, price point. Pictured are the basic True Second models offered in both steel and rose gold but also True Second Universal Time version. The plain version carries a largely unadorned dial with date window and a slightly textured dial hiding the very special movement inside. aeger LeCoultre have long employed clever complications allowing the wearer to read different time ones simultaneously once the home time is set and this version doesn’t disappoint. Coolsculpting If you are at your wits end and completely frustrated about the fact that no matter how much you follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly for months on end but just don’t seem to be able to shift those certain areas of stubborn fat, then it’s worth considering Coolsculpting . This is a completely non-invasive, non-surgical fat freezing treatment which is produced by Zeltiq® Aesthetics Incorporated, a world leading medical company. It is exceptionally safe and does not carry any risk of infection. The medical term for this body sculpting technology is cryolipolysis and the main principle is to specifically target and break down stubborn fat cells beneath your skin by literally freezing them to death so that over a certain amount of time they can be gradually and naturally eliminated from the body. Performing this procedure at the Doctor ita akus clinic in Knightsbridge is Doctor Galyna Sele neva who is the only qualified medical doctor in the UK to attend the Coolsculpting University at the eltiq headquarters in California. Through Galyna’s skill and expertise in this particular area she has now established the Knightsbridge clinic as the largest centre for Coolsculpting in the UK. lthough very successful in this particular field, she is also a trained doctor and assists Doctor Rakus in all other aspects of the treatments performed at the clinic. Doctor Rakus herself is world renowned with an international celebrity following and has over twenty years of aesthetic medical experience. She has established her clinic as one of the world’s largest solo non-surgical practices in the UK.
t your first appointment Doctor Galyna will do an assessment to determine whether you are suitable for Coolsculpting and she will also advise on any areas of concern. Depending on what you would like to have done, she will also let you know how the treatment will proceed and you will be given the choice to have before and after pictures which when taken, ensure that full three hundred and sixty-degree body images are achieved. Targeted fat cells can be eliminated from most areas of the body and this includes belly fat (often known as the hormonal tyre in older women and which no amount of exercising will shift , mu n tops, haunches, back fat and even double chins. This is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction and there is no need for any anaesthetics, incisions or needles. The most discomfort you will feel is at the beginning of your treatment when ice cold gel panels are applied to the skin over the areas which are to be treated. Special hand held devices are then placed over these pads and the targeted area is then drawn upwards between the panels. You will feel a mild discomfort at the start and a pulling sensation as the fat is sucked in but this is not painful and soon passes as the treated area then becomes completely numb. Each session lasts for one hour and once you are set up you are free to relax and while away the time as you wish and even enjoy a cup of tea. Doctor Galyna has a wonderful bedside manner and puts you completely at your ease. As we gain weight our fat cells increase in size and this in turns creates a larger frame but once these cells are removed they cannot get

Those with lighter lashes can also have lashes tinted during the process for a real stand out look. any bigger as they are no longer there. Coolsculpting works by gradually cooling the fat cells beneath the skin to a point at which they freeze and crystallise and then break up and are permanently destroyed. Because fat is uniquely sensitive and more susceptible to cold, the freezing triggers a natural death to those cells only and the surrounding cells are left completely unharmed. Once your hour is up, the sucking device and cooling panels are removed and your treated area is then hand massaged to break up the dead fat cells. Another hand held device (only available at this clinic is then used to finish off the massage. ou may experience some redness and bruising around the treated area and this will also be numb for a certain amount of time. However, each individual reacts differently and there is absolutely no reason why you should not Immediately return to your daily activities. Significant results are seen after ust one treatment and you may notice changes in your body contours after three weeks. However, the most dramatic results are seen between two to three months whilst your body continues to flush out the fat cells. During this time, you will continue to notice improvements to your shape and you will gain a sleeker physique. This proven technology permanently eliminates targeted fat cells and once they are gone, they are gone for good. As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle you will not regain those pockets of fat. MAURITIUS
Mauritius
luxurious island oasis
TRAVEL
Former home of the dodo and a showcase for wildlife, world-class fishing, golf and more, Mauritius is a true treasure in the Indian Ocean where natural beauty blends seamlessly with culture and history.
The stunning mountain vistas of this ancient volcanic island appear from the glittering turquoise ocean like the settings for an exotic Bond film, surrounded by lush sugar cane fields. There really isn’t a bad time to visit the island. The summer months of November to April are warm and dry with temperatures of 23-33 degrees Celsius, and the weather stays, on average around 24 degrees Celsius for most of the year with the highest rainfall in December but even then, nothing compared to the depressing winter weather in London. The island’s beautiful white beaches are protected by coral reef which runs around the whole island, except for the southern coast which offers wilder strands and dramatic cliff faces. In the northern plains, the land rises to a central plateau dotted by lakes and extinct volcanic craters. Only a few uninhabited islets are scattered around the main island. Divided into North, East, South and West, the island has a population of ust under 1.3million. It may look vast on a map but actually doesn’t take long to get around via car. The peace you find on the island is incredible. Not only is it blessed with beautiful surrounds and the vast Indian Ocean, but the multi-ethnic culture of Mauritius – Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism - co-exists peacefully. The Grand Bassin natural volcanic lake is considered to be one of the most sacred Hindu places in Mauritius and is home to the largest annual Hindu festival outside of India, Maha Shivaratree. This harmony and influence has had great effect on other areas of life in Mauritius. For example the cuisine on the island is much like its population - colourful and cross-bred. It is inspired by three continents and offers visitors an array of Indian, Chinese, rabian, Creole and European dishes on the same table. Mauritians are incredibly creative and you will often a fusion of the above cuisines in one dish together with a local take or ingredient making it totally unique.
MAURITIUS Ideal if you are on a longer break to the magnificent island, a trip to the capital city Port Louis is a must. Home to a number of historical and cultural sites, the city is always busy and makes for a very interesting day out. Highlights include Chinatown, the colourful Central Market, The Government House, apravasi Ghat – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Champ De Mars - the oldest horse track still standing in the southern hemisphere. Incredibly popular, horse races are held every Saturday from May to November. Last December the city held its light festival, Porlwi by Light. unning across a weekend, the event was a great success and saw some of the capital’s biggest landmarks lit up in spectacular fashion with varying art installations along the way. If you are looking for an even more exciting way to break up your holiday and explore then head to Le Morne and the Black iver Gorges National Park. enowned for its incredible landscape and picturesque location by the turquoise blue ocean, Le Morne is not only a place of spectacular beauty but also holds an important place in the history and memory of Mauritius’s past. Le Morne has become a symbol in the history of slavery on the island, representing the resistance of these captive labourers and a must-see during the commemoration of the abolition of slavery in Mauritius. ccording to history, the slaves threw themselves off the mountain instead of going back to their masters, a tragic and saddening past for a place that inhabits so much beauty. Today the site remains incredibly close to Mauritians hearts and it comes as no surprise to learn that the site has acquired such national importance in local history and identity that it has been classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

La Matan a is a tradition deep rooted in many rural areas of Spain and involves the slaughter, preparation and consumption of a pig in a “nose to tail” style of eating. It’s a method rooted in sustainability as the entire pig is prepared and nothing is wasted. From anuary to March 201 , guests to aqua nueva are invited to dine from “The Pig Menu” which incorporates delicacies inspired from La Matan a. and punchbowls encourage good times. The wine selection is also very good featuring a number of choices from some of the best vineyards in the world and beers on tap include Woodford’s Wherry, Guinness, Ko el and Peroni as well as craft brews like East London Brewery IP , Islington Steam Lager and Chelsea Blonde from the fridges. The menu at Drake Morgan is the most diverse among their group. Created by Head Chef David Green Soho House Group , the menu focuses around small plates to start before moving onto larger comfort dishes and grill specials for mains. Signature dishes cooked on a charcoal-fired robata include Dover sole on the bone and lamb chops with mint sauce. Other highlights are the many burgers – in particular the Wagyu Beef and blue cheese burger fish and chips lobster mac cheese and an array of salads. Smaller plates are equally tempting with ham croquettes and heirloom tomato salad with burrata and avocado. To say there is something for everyone is an understatement. With a large variety of fish, meat and vegetarian options, along with a host of sides from osemary, parmesan and tru e chips to roasted beets, you will struggle not to want them all. Dessert if you can manage it is equally exciting with a Hot Fudge Sundae for those with a sweet tooth or a selection of British cheeses for those without. egular D s spin until late, Thursday to Saturday.

The Ninth, Charlotte Street The Ninth is the first solo venture by award winning London based chef, un Tanaka. Situated in the heart of London’s busy Fit rovia neighbourhood, this restaurant offers a sharing menu of simple but refined French - Mediterranean style dishes. Boasting a successful career of over twenty years of experience working in London’s top restaurants with other famous chefs such as Marco Pierre White and Michel oux unior, nine is the number of restaurants un has worked in and hence the significance and simplicity of the name. Born in merica and of apanese British origin, un himself is now a recognised face on television and is regularly invited to appear on many of the popular cookery shows. This contemporary and stylish restaurant is spread out over two floors and has a ninety cover capacity. un’s aim is to bring a casual and friendly approach and this is reflected in the staff who are also extremely professional and knowledgeable when it comes to recommending dishes from the menu. The chic, ground floor dining room is bathed in soft lighting and the slate green tiles, dark wood and distressed copper décor instantly provide a cosy, warm and inviting atmosphere allowing a welcome escape from the cold outside. The exposed brick walls of the upstairs are a bit brighter but guests can en oy a private dining experience in a specially designated space and this is perfect for any occasion.
The la carte menu is available for lunch and dinner and only the finest seasonal produce is used. Every choice is catered for and this menu offers snacks, salads, hot starters, house cured raw meats and fish, vegetables and desserts. Specialities such as the extremely morish oxtail croquettes or the ossobucco tortellini and bone marrow served with freshly baked pitta with oregano and sea salt all come together to tantalise the taste buds making you want to try other succulent delights such as flamed mackerel with dill, cucumber and capers and the sea bass carpaccio with salsa verde and pickled Kohlrabi. Bearing in mind that this is a sharing menu, more wonderful dishes to add to the feast include red mullet risotto with almonds and aioli, delectable salted beef cheeks with oxtail consommé and charred cabbage, toasted fregola and butternut squash with pecorino, green lentils with chori o and red pepper salsa and beetroot tarte tatin with feta and pine nuts. The vegetables had to have a mention as these typical French classics are all lovingly thought out and prepared with un’s own signature twist and are considerably more than ust your normal side dish. There are so many tempting dishes to try on this fabulous menu but to finish off you should make sure that you leave room for the excellent Tarte Tatin with home-made rosemary ice cream or the Pan Perdu with honeycomb and vanilla ice cream.

Salvatore’s tails
with Salvatore Calabrese
Salvatore Calabrese - famously known as The Maestro - is one of the world’s top bartenders. He made a name for himself sourcing and mixing ‘Liquid History’, vintage spirits dating back to 1770.
on have opened a new bar and restaurant in the east end, near London Fields, called Wringer Mangle, and Gerry and his team are reviving some gin cocktails, including a whole section of the menu inspired by the Collins and also some drinks that have typically been en oyed with other spirits but are actually an eye-opener when you revert to gin. Take the Bla er typically made with flaming whiskey, flavoured with spices and set alight before being theatrically poured between two vessels, creating an enormous arc of blue flame. It’s ust as good and burns ust as bright when made with gin, and perfect for these winter months. I’m sure ohn Collins would have approved of their recreations. Finally, I pay tribute to another legendary bartender who has recently died, leaving his own gin-soaked legacy for the city he loved. oe Gilmore, who passed away last month aged 3, was a former head bartender at the merican Bar at the Savoy Hotel. He worked at the bar between 1 40 and 1 he’s the oe’ in Sinatra’s song One For My Baby - Set em up, oe ’ . part from the fact that all those who occupy that lofty position are legends, from Harry Craddock in the 1 20s to my good friend Peter Dorelli in the 1 0s, he presided over the bar during an iconic age in the 1 0s. One of his legacies was creating a cocktail in honour of Neil rmstrong during the late Sixties and the moon landings the Moonwalk was his own tribute to a legend. s a bartender, I find it interesting to compare myself to others who have trodden the same path, and I wonder whether my own legacy will prove as enduring as oe Gilmore’s or ohn Collins or indeed as gin’s . In the meantime I try my best, and my team at Salvatore’s at Playboy Club London will show you the wonders of the spirit I have some dating back to the days of ohn Collins, and of course they can make you a Collins, Moonwalk and even a Gin Bla er. nd if you’re out east, my sons will show you their versions too . Salute
This month I pay tribute to three gentlemen of London actually two gentlemen and a third, how shall I put it, rascal who has somehow attained respectability. Let’s start with that last one. I’m actually talking about gin. OK, not a real person, but a grand persona nonetheless that’s London through and through. ou’ll have to have had your eyes shut for several years not to notice the resurgence gin has gone through recently, and had your fingers in your ears for centuries not to have recognised the role gin has taken in London’s checkered history. From the numerous bathtub stills that wreaked havoc, alcoholism and disease in the 1 th century, so well articulated by William Hogarth’s engraving Gin Lane, the spirit has matured into respectability, characterised by fine old established brands and brand new pretenders that proudly feature its own name on their labels London Dry. That ourney has been driven by a succession of bartenders over the years. One of the first was ohn Collins, to whom I pay my second tribute, who tended bar at Limmer’s Hotel, a legendary coffee house in Conduit Street in Mayfair. He gave his name to a sour cocktail comprising gin, lemon uice and soda water, then mostly known as a Collins. It’s a fine, refreshing drink, one that has perhaps lost out in the popularity stakes ultimately to the Gin Tonic, but one that arguably speaks more to its London roots than the malaria-bashing G T which was designed for the tropics. Back then the Collins would have used a sweeter gin called Old Tom compared to what would become known as the London dry style , these days it’s more likely to be made with London Dry gin and sugar... I don’t ust pay tribute to him in words my sons Gerry and

Bentley Continental V8 S Triumph TR4 Two stunning British sports car, neither leaving anything to the imagination. The only question is which one would you choose? Never mind, you can have both, they do offer slightly different things anyway...
Subtle is my middle name... Bentley have been in the business of providing its refined customers with an equally luxurious experience since they delivered the first vehicle to the public back in 1921. However, subtlety has rarely featured throughout the consequent years and why should 2016 be any different.
YOUR DRIVE
In 2003 the Bentley brand was transformed from a British car manufacturer into the global provider of what was to become one of the most successful luxury British grand touring sports cars, the Continental GT. lthough the name had been in the company since the early 0’s, none of the predecessors were able to deliver anything close to the same package that was now on the table. First generation models included the GTC, Supersports and convertible iterations, but the real fun began with the introduction of the second generation vehicles in 2011. Until the oint development of the impressive 4.0-litre V unit under the bonnet with udi, only the si eable .0-litre W12 block was available. ou may be asking why a smaller engine would be better and in most
cases you would have a valid point. However, what the V provided that the W12 simply couldn’t was a substantial improvement in not only e ciency, but benefits in the cars balance and poise through cornering. Developments in the technology have continued ever since and now with the M 1 release of the Continental V S we can reap the benefits of the Crewe-based craftsmenship. The luxury British marque was the first company to introduce cylinder deactivation to the market which offered huge improvements in engine e ciency by essentially turning the engine in to a 2.0-litre four cylinder under light load. This has since been combined with twin-turbochargers which are positioned within the V’ to improve engine response. ll-

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL V8 S in-all, the power behind the V S is somewhat impressive. lthough this engine technology is now available across other platforms in the Volkswagen group, thanks to their position at inception, Bentley still have the ump on the rest. The Continental V S lends itself perfectly to the technology and works so effectively that you wouldn’t even question the benefits over the W12 iteration. Packing 2 PS with a whopping 0 Nm of pulling power, even the substantial more than two tonne weight has minimal impact on the V S’ impressive statistics. 0- 2 mph in ust 4. seconds with a top speed of 1 2 mph, this car features at the upper end of the production vehicle scale. But that’s not all, the surprising weight of this Bentley is a result of one of the most luxurious interiors you will find in any car on the market. Considering the price point, starting at 14 , 00, you will be hard pushed to find a similar offering from another marque, especially one that has been completely hand crafted. The finish is impeccable, passing through numerous quality control points to ensure every vehicle reaches its new owner in perfect condition. Not only this, but every individual working on the car has been through an extensive learning and training process in order to deliver the expected standards on every piece they are responsible for, from the hand stitching on the steering wheel, to the impressive identification of the slightest imperfections on the paintwork.
Contrast stitching and a carbon fibre dashboard - the signature look for the V S - create a luxurious and sporty cabin adorned with fine leather to complete the aesthetic allure on the inside. Keen to maintain a certain level of tradition, Bentley continue to present features such as the analogue dials and Breitling clock along with classically styled air vents with push toggle operation. The interface is one of equally distinct ease, with everything available at the touch of the si eable touchscreen or press of a tactile button. lthough the Contintental offers a plethora of options and ad ustments, you never feel overwhelmed by the features, something other brands have often struggled with.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL V8 S
Interior features aside, Bentley have clearly done a lot of work on the exterior design of the car. lthough subtle to the eye, the latest features completely transform the appeal of this car. Creating a much lower, wider and more aggressive aesthetic thanks to some clever alterations, the V S has finally become the car it has always wanted to be. Previous versions have long suffered the often chunky vision of the Continental GT which on conception required the substantial frame to support its enourmous cargo - the .0-litre W12. Now, the V S has received some select trimming on key areas providing sleek lines and agressive front end. The 201 model delivers updated B’ fender vents mirroring the improved finesse of the car along with the introduction of a more impossing lip-style spoiler in the rear creating a more sport focused image. On the front of the car
an updated chassis. s with all other Continental models, you can comfortably seat four adults along with a substantial amount of luggage, but few of the others offer such a complete package. ou can opt for a W12 version such as the GT Speed to get the most powerful version or settle for the standard V , but neither will deliver the all-round experience that the V S offers. Stunning looks combined with an incredible level of performance in both speed and e ciency, this is the one to go for. There is no denying that owning any Bentley Continental wouldn’t be a bad thing, but if you are going to do it, you may as well choose the best one you can. nd unless you have an unusual desire to deplete the worlds fuel sources at an even more alarming rate, there really is no point in picking the W12, you will have much more fun in your V S...it looks good in yellow too.
Bentley have managed to rework existing features to create a car with even more presence on the road. Its front bumper now incorporates an inverted aerofoil-style design to evoke feelings from the racetrack. Improvements can be seen and felt throughout the new Continental V S, but is especially noticable once you are behind the wheel. n improved ride and handling can be felt through every corner with the car offering a much more composed drive reducing the levels of movement in the body

With just under 1000 TR4’s being registered with the DVLA in Q3 of 201 , you will be hard pushed to find anyone willing to give theirs up. This is one such occasion, a fantastic 1 2 example in none other than British acing Green with impeccable coachwork and recently refurbished black leather interior. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti for Triumph Motor Company, this impressive little British sports car reached over 40,000 production vehicles between 1 1 and and experienced some great success on the racing circuit. Today the design still features heavily in vintage racing, especially on the rally scene. This car has been upgraded to a fast road road rally specification and drives as such, lending itself to a weekend at the track every so often. Upgrades to the car include overdrive, Kenlowe cooling fan, sump guard, stage 2 cylinder head, fast road camshaft, minilite wheels and K N filters. This T 4 also comes with the additional Surrey Top providing convertible functionality for you to en oy once the Summer arrives. It is available now, but won’t be for long, so take a look sooner rather than later.

Your Property Market with Alasdair Carpenter Managing Director, Lourdes Estates
Before I start, I think it’s important I make one thing perfectly clear I am not some sort of incurable Luddite on a crusade to stop the inevitable advancement of technology in the property industry. uite the contrary, I believe technology has revolutionised the property market for the benefit of all involved. However, my views on selling your property through an entirely online only estate agency are somewhat more cautionary. It is common knowledge that moving home is one of the most stressful experiences you will likely undertake during your lifetime. So handing over the day to day liaison and negotiation to a call centre employee most likely based in an entirely different area of the UK seems potentially like fanning the flames with regards to the stress levels involved. My own experiences of dealing with call centres or help desks’, as some of the online estate agencies prefer to call them, are not always the most pragmatic and fruitful. There is genuine value in dealing with a small number of people that you have met face to face, have a rapport with and have developed trust in, when it comes to selling your house. s there is, in having an o ce nearby your home, where you can go in and discuss, face to face, any issues you may be experiencing with a member of staff or a senior representative from that company. s both the owner of a leading independent estate agency and also a property investor and developer, I will be the first to admit the talent pool for estate agents is somewhat shallow. ecruiting professional, competent and motivated staff has always been one of biggest challenges for UK based estate agencies. Our fees are generally much lower than the ma ority of the worlds developed countries. We have no mandatory licencing or qualifications in place that would at least go some way towards sorting the wheat from the chaff. So, I for one would be fearful of the quality and motivation of the staff located in a call centre who are likely to be paid a salary or an hourly rate. Most negotiators working for recognised estate agents will have the vast bulk of their remuneration made up in commission. Negotiators compete to secure the sale against the other members of their team, thus providing the client peace of mind that the company representing them is competing to obtain the best possible price. What would be the motivation for the call centre worker to go above and beyond the call of duty to secure additional revenue for their clients of which they have never met and have no personal relationship with ? Especially when ocklands
ce
you consider that the company selling the property is acting on a fixed fee basis. They get their few hundred pounds, regardless of the price achieved and in some cases regardless of whether the property actually sells. No sale, no fee is a valuable tool and does wonders to focus the minds of those reliant upon commission to pay their own bills. Online estate agents are keen to promote the fact that as they are centrally based grandiose name for a call centre thus, they can operate outside of the normal working hours. The one thing they have failed to appreciate is, these days so do most traditional estate agencies. s per the first paragraph of this article, I am a firm believer in technology and so are most of my competitors. Most leading estate agents will work long hours, almost all will provide clients with a mobile number and an e mail address. My staff answer calls and reply to e-mails early in the morning and late into the evening, as do our competitors. London is a transient place with tenants and buyer’s alike coming from almost every corner of the globe. Good London agents have links with overseas brokers and agents. We also market our properties via international marketing mediums. This might not be of any benefit to those selling property in rural parts of the UK or areas with an entirely domestic market place but it really makes a difference in London. I think online estate agencies have their place and I also think they will continue to gain market share across the UK. I don’t think they work in London and certainly not for properties in excess of 00, 000. I also think they are very en vogue at a time where demand is outstripping supply and market conditions are very bullish. How they fair when the market slows and securing buyers and tenants becomes more of an art form will be interesting to observe. Maybe this might be the catalyst to the Government considering a regulated property market. Something that in my opinion is way overdue. Hopefully, it will also give established and traditional estate agencies a push to provide clients with a far higher level of customer service. Those that don’t embrace technology will be forced to do so in order to survive. The face of estate agency in the UK is changing, that much is true. Only time will tell how sustainable online estate agency is. s for its relevance in London, I have my doubts. it

The heart of the modern home with Charlie Bubear Head of Savills Chelsea
The kitchen has long been the hub of the home, now it is the epicentre of family life. Over the past 20 years the way families live and spend time together has evolved; gone are the days of the mother cooking alone in a small kitchen, with children lost in the recesses of the house. Kitchens now play host to the entire family with homework or work emails assiduously attended to before a migration to the living space after dinner for films or games. This is the heart and soul of the household and, as our relationship with food has changed, kitchens have become bigger and smarter, where anyone can whip up a weeknight masterpiece. If you’re thinking about refurbishing or refreshing a kitchen, consider your choice carefully. The kitchen’s style should match the rest of the house a Bo or Poliform won’t suit a scruffy home. The chosen brand also says a great deal; Smallbone for the classic, Bulthaup for the e cient and Bo for the super high end. Newly developed houses and refurbished kitchens now provide all the equipment you’d expect to see in a professional establishment, whilst retaining a chic and effortless style. Whether the potential purchaser is more concerned about the triple oven and induction hob or just the size of the wine fridge, this room can easily make or break the sale. It is often at the top of most buyers’ list; a shabby kitchen can cheapen the property in their eyes so investment is often well worth the
return in value if you are considering selling in the near future. Two decades ago, a galley kitchen with basic appliances would be su cient kitchens were functional and used for cooking only, with eating and entertaining reserved for the dining room. Now, the kitchens of 201 are made to fit the entire family with su cient storage to hide the evidence, extensive islands are a must and most incorporate hidden work stations for adults and children alike. Beyond that, we expect them to double up as entertainment spaces with all the latest gadgets, from incorporated speakers and high definition televisions competing with the uooker boiling water taps and steaming ovens for our attention. In a fast paced modern age, kitchens have become so much more than their original ancestors and should be equipped for every eventuality, to slot into our busy lifestyles and to feed both our body and mind.

Can a garden truly be a garden and still be low maintenance? Well, perhaps that depends upon your notion of what gardening is. I have a garden at my o ce which is both planted in the ground and in large stand alone containers. There are trees and shrubs, topiary and bamboo and in order to cut down my time when at work, I am at my busiest during the summer months, I have a very simple off the tap irrigation system to reduce day to day care. The garden is lush and green, but I have to confess, I do very little to it, save for a burst of cutting, feeding and mulching in the spring and autumn which takes only a few hours. My major timekeeper is sweeping which cannot really be called gardening but in order for the garden to look nice it has to be tidy, so I sweep the garden on average twice a week from spring to autumn. If I didn’t have bamboo which seems to belligerently drop its leaves all year round and particularly so in the summer, and in copious quantities, I suspect I could get away with idly pushing a brush round once a week or even once every ten days which is pretty low key on the upkeep front. The key to low maintenance is choosing your plants wisely. Hard landscaping outside will always need to be swept and cleaned to look good, but you can help yourself along with a wise plant choice. Evergreens are ideal because they have a limited leaf drop (with the exception of Bamboo). Topiary in the form of Buxus or Taxus is not in the least bit di cult to care for and ust because it is shaped doesn’t mean that you will be a slave to your shears. Once or at worst two trims a year is all that is required, which considering this might take only a few hours means that you still have at least 363 full days of the year when you are not doing this. If even this is too much then it is possible to purchase some ama ing artificial Buxus which needs no care save maybe a quick hose down once a year. These are especially good for balconies
and roof terraces where watering might be di cult and perhaps they cannot be viewed quite so close up. Containers with glazed surfaces seem to pick up less dirt and look smarter when left for longer than those with matt finishes or alternatively opt for planters with a ‘shabby chic’ appeal that look better when not quite so pristine. If you like a lot of colour in the garden then this does take care but pots with bulbs for a spring show add impact at not a lot of expense and short of watering late in the spring as the weather warms up, they need little human intervention at all save to stand there and admire their blooms. It is always wise to protect the pots, especially those with Tulips with chicken wire as Squirrels haven’t read the manual on low maintenance gardening and can make a terrible mess to be cleaned up as they dig for freshly planted bulbs. As with most gardening a ‘less is more’ approach can be applied to a low maintenance scheme. Do something big and bold well and care for that rather than trying to spread yourself too thin. Lawns take time to keep manicured so don’t be too hard on yourself if there are a few daisies that outwit you. Gravel is an absolute monster to keep clean so keep the planting in and around it relaxed but plant it with species that don’t self seed as it is a perfect germination bed for Verbena, grasses and many of the Allium family. Free plants are always nice but not in their thousands - Verbena in particular are very generous indeed. In essence all gardens need care both in terms of their hard landscaping elements as well as their plants. Finding a balance to suit you is the key. It is really not the end of the world if there are a few leaves on the floor and the Dahlia need dead heading - gardening should be a pleasure not a chore so strike when the mood takes you and you will find the experience far more en oyable.
