The Art of Danish Hygge Banish those winter blues and embrace your inner hygge with these 8 simple lifestyle changes!

Whether you’re looking to boost your overall wellbeing, or changing your mind-set to enjoy those simple pleasures, hygge, pronounced “hue-gah” is a lifestyle trend that the Scandinavians swear by. And what could be better than the feeling of living well without cutting out the things you love? Could the fact that Denmark is officially the world’s happiest country, according to the 2016 World Happiness Report* be down to the Danes hygge lifestyle? We talk to nutritionist Cassandra Barns about making 8 simple changes to adapt to the hygge lifestyle. 1) Eat comfort foods. Yes – we said it. Hygge is all about comfort, so what could be better than a big warm bowl of porridge, topped with your favourite berries? Nutritionist, Cassandra Barns says: “Porridge is not only warming and comforting: it’s also a good source of slow-releasing energy, Nairn’s porridge oats (RRP £1,99, www.nairns-oatcakes.com) are high in fibre and support healthy

digestion. What’s more, the beta glucan fibre in oats can help keep cholesterol in check too. It’s the perfect wholesome comfort food.” 2) Get outdoors. Fresh air and long walks are always encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle. This is something that is really important to the Danes, and key to keeping fit and youthful. The Nordic temperatures mean it is colder than it is in the UK, so like them, embrace the outside world and wrap up warm in your favourite coat, hat, scarf and gloves! 3) Mood boosting. As well as comfort, hygge encompasses the ideas of happiness and nourishing the mind and body. So raw chocolate is another great 'hygge food'. According to Cassandra, "As well as being a comforting indulgence, raw chocolate, such as OMBAR Chocolate (RRP, £1.99, www.ombar.co.uk) contains natural substances that may boost mood, including one called phenylethylamine (PEA), which said to be released in higher amounts in the brain when we’re in love. It’s also rich in

10

EVENTS magnesium, which is associated with relaxation." 4) Take a break from life and enjoy the moment. It is so easy to forget to take a break from the office, or to visit your favourite coffee shop and watch the world go by. Hygge is all about those simple moments that you don’t always appreciate or make the most of. So why not try making a simple week night dinner into more of a memorable occasion by laying the table with your favourite crockery, lighting a few candles and turning off any background noise, such as the TV or radio, in order to really enjoy the moment. 5) Hue – gah the night away. The word “Hue-gah” translates literally as “cosiness”, so what better way to spend the evening than sitting by the fire on a cold night. For many people the darkness fills us with dread at 4pm, but why not embrace the darkness when you get home, with things that make you happy, such as knitted socks, incense and warm blankets. Happiness is key to embracing the hygge lifestyle. 6) Plan a date with family & friends –‘Hygge togetherness’ is hugely important to the Danes. It is very easy to let days go by without spending quality time with family or friends. So with that in mind, get the diary out, and plan a few dates with the people closest to you. Hygge is all about enjoying those little things in life,

London International Mime Festival 9th January to 4th February

Celebrating it’s 40th anniversary, the London International Mime Festival will see 120 performances over 34 days all over the capital. Taking place at some of the city’s best arts venues and, for the first time, Shoreditch Town Hall, the programme of events is made up many UK or London premieres, with artists from Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Norway, Spain, Finland and New Zealand joining some of Britain’s fast emerging talents and established names. Seventeen companies are involved in the festival and it kicks off with a special edition of Gandini Juggling’s Smashed reimagined for 17 performers and featuring jugglers, hundreds of apples and crockery. Festival highlights include Compagnie MPTA performing Barons Perchés, and Thomas Monckton’s Only Bones. mimelondon.com

and stopping to make memories that will be remembered. 7) Bake your own bread – simple as that. Baking is a productive yet relaxing activity that the Danes enjoy to do. To nourish your mind and body, look for recipes that use buckwheat flour. According to Cassandra, “Clearspring Organic Buckwheat flour (RRP £2.59, www.clearspring.co.uk) is naturally gluten-free and very nutritious. Like dark chocolate, it’s rich in magnesium, known as ‘nature’s tranquiliser’. And it’s also a great source of iron, zinc and B vitamins to support energy and your immune system.” 8) Light up those candles. One of the first things Danes associate Hygge with is candles. Whether it’s tea-lights on a table or lanterns by an open fireplace candles that can give you an added enjoyment to snuggling up in the evening. Invest natural scents such as fresh pine, fir cones and orange for an organic aroma that brings the magic of the outdoors into your home. Dewey Dell - Marzo 4 © wolfgang silveri-steirischer herbst

FINANCE WITH MATT GOLD

A Triumphant 2016 and a Better 2017 Our financial insider reviews the global markets its first round on 23 April and second round on 7 May, Germany’s Federal Election on 22 October and Italy may also have a Prime Minister election in 2017. Each of these could bring a new leader with a political agenda on leaving the EU. In most EU member countries, there is a political party with leaving the Eurozone as its political statement. It is expectable. There are hardcore Manchester United fans and there are hardcore Man City fans, but there is only one champion each year. Fortunately, the Premier League champion does not get to decide on leaving the EU. Otherwise we could be in

2016 turned out to be a good vintage for the stock market. US, UK, Germany and Japan stock markets all had a good run in the second half of the year (as of 22 December anyway). Who could have guessed that? Brexit turned out to be a great opportunity to buy stocks in developed markets and Donald Trump winning the US President Race was a turbo charge to the stock markets. Italy’s referendum ended up being a celebration party and stocks rallied harder. The currency market was skewed. The mighty US Dollar gained so much against the Euro, the British Sterling, the Japanese Yen and the Chinese Yuan since the Trump victory. Currency brokers had a great November and December. The world is suddenly so beautiful and rosy if you take the stock chart as your only reference. 2017 is definitely going to be a busy year for UK government with Brexit issues filling up their email inbox. Uncertainties are going to be the core components in any business. Lucky for some, the weak Sterling is a life saver. Companies with cost base in Sterling and income in USD or oversea clients are feeling the joy. Technology, pharmaceutical, oil, global banking and finance, tourism, education, security sectors are some obvious ones. These companies contributed to the rally that took FTSE 100 to above 7,000. FTSE100 had a range of 5500 to 7100 level in 2016. Pretty much any entry point to the market during the year is a good entry point. 2016 is a good vintage indeed. Will this trend follow in 2017? We need to consider the currency. Where is the Sterling heading against the US Dollar and the Euro? There are people betting on Sterling, Euro and the USD all becoming 1 to 1. Yes, GBP 1 = EUR 1 = USD 1. This means GBP drops another 19% against USD. It sounds unreal and it would be a black swan. But an 18% drop already happened in 2016. On the other side, can anyone see GBP getting back to 1.49 against the USD in 2017? This would be an even bigger black swan. Especially if one takes into account what the Euro zone is facing in 2017. 2017 is a year of election for the Euro zone. The Netherlands’ General Election is on 15 March, France’s Presidential Election has

and out of Brexit every year. Maybe the Dutch, French and German elections would turn out to be a nonevent like Italy’s referendum. I doubt it though, so there should be a few opportunities to enter the stock market in 2017. Currency wise, Euro is within walking distance to parity level with USD, 1.047 as of 22 December. All Euro needs to do is to swing like a pendulum and we are likely to witness EUR 1 = USD 1 in 2017. So please do not be surprised. A weak Euro is helping export economy in the Eurozone like Germany. Italy and Spain will benefit as well but they really need to issue more debt to keep the country going. Austerity stops working when your income is dropping faster than you can cut cost. Italy has 63 different administrations and such historical setting means any austerity measure is likely to be diluted or even resisted. Italian banks are too big to fail as that will hurt the depositors and could cause social unrest. There is a good reason why some people think Italy needs to leave the euro and go back to Lira. To buy time, the European Central Bank continues to print Euro, pump money to the countries that need help and allow Euro to weaken further. Hopefully, someone will have a cure in the future. If USD strength continues in 2017, Europe and UK stock markets have the wind behind them. UK has already set its sail on the Brexit route. Euro zone is likely to hold itself together in 2017 while the money printing machine probably needs to work overtime. Assume both Euro and Sterling weakens hand in hand against the USD, 2017 could be a good vintage in volatile weather conditions.

NEW CAVENDISH JEWELLERS

Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah

Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite Jewellery. Official agents for many of the world’s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on Diamonds & precious stones. Established in 1982, New Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.

The word classic is thrown about too easily. If something was in style decades ago and has now made a comeback, very few objects are a true homage to their originals in that many re-editions are modern items incorporating a vintage inspired twist rather than being an outright incarnation of their predecessor. In the watch world, perhaps the most enduring model of this nature is Omega’s Speedmaster Moonwatch that carries virtually the same hand wound movement as the watch that went to the Moon. Omega offer two variants of this watch, one with a modern sapphire glass but a second with a hesalite plexi-glass as per the original watch from the 1960’s. At a retail price point of under four thousand pounds, I firmly believe this is still the most value based purchase in the watch market and an absolute must have for any collection, burgeoning or well balanced. Aside from this model, there are very few watches that simply endure. They do not change too much or try to be too clever but rather if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. IWC’s Portugieser Chronograph fits firmly into this category. The 3714 reference is the reference for the brand. Easily their best selling model and aside from the celebrated Pilot’s watch, their most distinctive and easily recognised. This IWC speaks volumes about its wearer and the brand’s methodology, which quaintly ties in with their customer base. No one is trying too hard here; the owner is choosing a watch neither fancy nor too subtle while IWC have not tried to mess with a tried and tested design. Ultimately, the industry is a business so the urge to build on the success of this collection in expanding it must have been high but typical to IWC, this desire has been resisted retaining a tight but healthy group of watches to represent this foundation of the brand.

The Portugieser as a collection can trace its roots back to 1939 when Portuguese sailors requested oversized wrist watches that matched the Chronometer timing of their Marine Chronometer counterparts. This large and legible functionality has been a key part of the Portugieser family’s make up. Over the years, the Portugieser, as it has been recently christened has quickly become the flag bearer for the brand. While the Pilot’s collection has been the marker for aviation watches across the industry, the Portugieser is very distinctly IWC. Every new complication, from their fabled Perpetual Calendars to the ground breaking Grand Complications have been delivered within this family. The simplicity of the Portugieser’s round case and clear face is the perfect palette by which to offer a variety of visuals, from simple three handed dress watches to a fully instantaneous calendar that needs no correcting for over a hundred years! However, rather than focus on the mind bending complexity behind the Perpetual Calendars and Grand Complications, let us look at the simplest of the current collection. The Portugieser Chronograph uses an automatic movement that is based on an ETA Valjoux 7750 base, which is the norm for a variety of chronographs of this style, such as the original Breitling Navitimer. IWC then extensively rework the raw parts to create the calibre 79350, which remarkably beats at 4Hz, a very high frequency for an entry level collection. The time keeping of mechanical watches is greatly affected by the intensity of the frequency at which the movement resonates. Naturally, the higher the frequency, the better the quality of the timekeeping. This is a remarkable point of note for what is still considered ultimately not entirely in-house in terms of movement.

COLUMN

NEW CAVENDISH JEWELLERS

Continuing on from the original Portugieser of the late 1930’s, this chronograph version has always been delivered with a diameter of 40.9mm with a minuscule bezel making the watch look as legible as it possibly can. This legibility and the symmetry created by the well balanced sub dials offers a satisfying visual for the eyes. At this size, it is often bemoaned the lack of date but where could an aperture fit without losing this beautiful balance? Interestingly, the manual wound Rattrapante (spilt second) option was offered first before the automatic single chronograph version was launched in 1998. Immediately becoming a fan favourite, it has continued to quietly remain an absolute mainstay of the collection whilst other models have come and gone. For 2016, the Rattrapante model was reintroduced in a very limited run of three versions for their flagship Milan, Munich & Paris boutiques - the Milan version is pictured and currently in stock with us (RRP £17,350.00 inc. VAT). The dial has been made slightly busier to use the space available but the movement remains hand wound as per the original. In the last decade, the family has had the occasional facelift with a more focused dial selection and the recent addition of a folding clasp on the steel models as standard. Otherwise, in terms of dimensions, the watches are entirely unchanged from their initial launch, something unheard of in the modern world of short attention spans where new releases are expected too often. IWC are famed for their dials and the Portugieser chronograph doesn’t disappoint. The steel models carry three very specific options in

white with either gilt or blued Arabic Numerals and hands or a black dial with silvered numerals. However the Rose Gold option is where it gets interesting. The “classic” ivory dial carries a gilt detail again but the ardoise sunburst dial with black sub dials is just a stunning piece of work and epitomises IWC’s synonymity with beautiful dials. The steel models retail at £5,900.00 while both Gold models are £13,450.00 including VAT. Though the market may have slowed down a little last year, the luxury industry has created a strong niche for itself and is growing healthily. With newer materials and the developments of movements moving at an astounding pace due to a ruling by the European High Court, where manufacturers have to produce more of their own movements, the public will see a tightening of collections by the brands. We currently have too many brands but also too many varieties within the families also. However, with this shift, the possibilities for invention and design are given fertile ground. Every industry must undergo some essence of destroying and rebuilding, the watch industry is no different. However, I’m pretty certain IWC’s Portugieser 3714 reference will walk the same steps as the Speedmaster Moonwatch defining and defying convention at the same time. New Cavendish Jewellers is an official authorised retailer for IWC watches. Discover the Portugieser collection and many more in-store or please feel free to contact us directly via telephone or email for further details on IWC watches.

Keeping Time with Cohiba

After celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cohiba with the creation of three commemorative limited editions, Zenith is paying tribute to the Cuban legend with the production of a watch that fits into the very heart of its collection - The El Primero “Legend of Cohiba”. Embodying the excellence, precision and expertise that unite Zenith and Cohiba lovers, half a century after their creation, the Habanos Cohiba and El Primero watches still retain the attributes that have forged their reputation and their multi-award-winning excellence. More than 50 years ago in 1962, the aim was to create an iconic watch for the 100th anniversary of the Manufacture Zenith in 1965. Given the enormity of resolving the complexity of

this legendary calibre, this watchmaking feat was finally achieved in 1969. Meanwhile, the ‘flagship of all Habanos ’, Cohiba was in 1966 . Time has now united two icons through the creation in 2016 of a unique watch collection celebrating their excellence, expertise and supremacy. A Habano is a prestigious object that, just like a watch, embodies an entire tradition of historical production and knowhow. Tobacco came to the Old World following the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus. More than 500 years later, the most famous brand in the world is partnering with the Manufacture Zenith in a joint celebration of what time has brought them. On this occasion, the El Primero “Legend of Cohiba” housing its emblematic El Primero movement – the world’s most precise high-frequency chronograph punctuating the time at a frequency of 36,000 vibrations an hour and markings tenths of seconds – sets aside its legendary tricolour light grey, anthracite and blue outfit to adopt the colours of the ‘Flagship of all Habanos ’. The case-middle of its 42 mm pink gold case is engraved with the year 1966. The small seconds at 9 o’clock reveals the profile of the aboriginal chief Taíno – the emblem of the brand Cohiba. The dial displays the golden nuances of a tobacco leaf and bears the signature Cohiba rings. In a subtle reminder of measurement, its emblematic lines cross the dial, vertically accentuating the width of the watch, just like a cigar on which they indicate the diameter. Complemented by a brown alligator leather strap with orange and yellow-tinted lining, the watch comes in an exclusive wooden presentation box featuring the same colours as the legendary Habanos.

JASMINA VICO

Jasmina Vico Advanced Smooth Eye Treatment After all the Christmas parties are over and your skin might be looking a bit worse for wear, what better way to start the new year than with a fresh new you. Time to treat yourself to a bespoke, signature facial massage from skincare specialist Jasmina Vico and try her innovative new Advanced Smooth Eye Treatment. With over thirteen years of experience under the guidance of leading London dermatologists and renowned plastic surgeons, Jasmina has a complete understanding of the skin and how it behaves. This early exposure led to her passion for corrective skin procedures and she is also a skilled laser therapist who specialises in the treatment of all types of cosmetic skin concerns and inflammatory conditions. Using only some of the most tried and trusted brands in the market such as SkinCeuticals, Jasmina uses the latest non-invasive procedures and treats everything from acne and scarring to preventative anti-aging and unsightly thread veins. When you first meet Jasmina, she completely puts you at ease with her calm and professional manner and she answers any questions with an impressive knowledge and a reassurance that you are in safe hands. Before any treatment begins however, she carries out an in-depth consultation explaining the whole procedure from start to finish, examining your face and eye area to see which is the best way forward. She also asks your own opinion and what you would like to achieve and then suggests which are the best options for you. For the Advanced Smooth Eye Treatment, she advises clients to use a recommended vitamin A eye cream at home for two weeks beforehand. This initiates the collagen fibre structure to grow

denser and prepares the delicate eye area for maximum results. Jasmina then carries out by hand her signature lymphatic drainage massage combined with exfoliating microdermabrasion to get rid of any toxins and to correct dark circles and puffiness. She uses a Fotona laser which treats the aging support structure by administering short pulses of micro-fine laser light to reach deeply into the skin’s inner layers. The body’s natural healing process then discards older, damaged tissue and rebuilds it with fresh, new collagen and elastin. These are the building blocks of smooth, youthful skin and when focused around the eye area it results in tightening, increased volume and wrinkle reduction. The Fotona is known to be the most effective laser on the market. Jasmina’s next step is to give you some ice cold Cryoskin therapy. This involves using a Cryoblobe which is a golf ball sized metal ball which has been stored at minus eighteen to minus thirty degrees celsius. She gently massages your face and eye area and these extreme temperatures of cold, although a shock to the system at first, have multiple benefits. From smoothing out wrinkles to tightening the pores, it boosts radiance and restores its softness and clarity making it significantly firmer. The cold causes the blood vessels to contract and then dilate. This improves the oxygen and nutrient supply to the skin’s surface thus making it appear more radiant. Finally, Jasmina boosts the whole treatment by applying a Cryostick. This is a one hundred per cent natural frozen solution containing purified water and two kinds of exclusive freeze dried plant stem cells - Acerola Secrets and Gatuline Lifting. This is

FITNESS WITH ALEX CASTRO

New Year, New You with Alex Castro

Alex Castro is one of London’s top personal trainers. ith over ten years experience within the fitness industry, lex trains his clients in the City alongside working at Barrys Bootcamp as an instructor at both their Euston and Moorgate branches.

As another year rolls in, lots of us use it as a chance to set new goals and, as a fitness professional, I know that come January, there will be a whole host of resolutions and personal promises about fitness and training, in one way or another. Gyms will be packed with newcomers, and the regulars may be slightly disdainful of the equipment now being heavily populated, but I, for one, embrace anyone trying to become fitter and healthier, whatever the trigger. Over the years, however, I have noticed a few themes which are common amongst those who successfully manage to maintain their New Years resolutions: Learn what you like: Explore a host of fitness classes, run outside, do a Saturday sport, take up dancing, but do something you actually enjoy. It will mean exercise is no longer viewed by you as a chore but something you will genuinely look forward to. Also, don’t be put off if there’s nothing you actually whole heartedly love, there are plenty of us who simply enjoy the post-workout buzz and keep going back for that!

Small, achievable steps: Don’t decide to try and put on 8kg of muscle or lose 10% of body fat - whilst this may well be a long term goal, the brain will just see this as insurmountable, and almost pointless to even begin trying. Try and keep to three commitments a week, and start them small (eg. going on a 30 minute walk, not drinking alcohol for a weekend, finishing 10 press ups without stopping) and build them up (eg. doing a 20 minute HIIT workout, picking up heavier weights, swapping out roast potatoes for sweet potatoes). Remember, its your goal: Everyone is different. Everyone has different goals. There is no need whatsoever for your goal to be thinner (unless you want that of course) - your goal may be to do a 65kg clean. They are both respectable goals, but completely different. Don’t feel the need to follow any pack but try and ensure all goals that you set yourself are healthy and going to be sustainable in the long run. Keep it to yourself: This may be my most controversial suggestion because lots of fitness journeys have been successful by being shared (whether in person or on social media). I definitely admit letting the world know you are undertaking a challenge, doing a detox etc heightens the pressure and accountability and may make you achieve your goals. BUT, why not be the one person who makes the commitment just to themselves, quietly, goes away works bloody hard and then shouts about it when their goals are smashed?! If you can do it for you (and not for any external pressure) its going to be a change you can keep up for sure. Make this the last year you need to make resolutions: Try and make whatever tweaks you are making permanent ones. Whilst I endorse the New Year being a trigger, health and fitness as a priority should simply be part of your life and the sooner you can adopt that mental attitude, the sooner you will reap the rewards.

THE PIG NEAR BATH

The Pig near Bath

Created in 2011 with The Pig in the Forest, the Lime Wood Group’s concept has gone on to enjoy success in five locations with more to follow in the future. Claiming to be simply a restaurant with rooms, this collection of hotels is far from anywhere your imagination would take you from such a statement. Third out of the stable, the stunning Georgian mansion located in 20 acres of rolling Mendips countryside delivers a distinctly ‘Pig’ experience. Opened in 2014, Hunstrete House, a Grade II listed building dating back to 1820 has been reimagined into an inviting and luxurious 29 bedroom hotel - The Pig near Bath. Complete with the synonymous kitchen garden and collection of pigs, chickens and quail that guests to this unique hotel chain have come to expect, The Pig near Bath also possesses the engaging experience of a greenhouse restaurant similar to that enjoyed at their Forest hotel. Bringing the outdoors in - quite literally - the restaurant’s menu is continuously changing as new ingredients are foraged and produce from the kitchen garden reaches its peak. As a result, every stay and in fact every meal offers up something different, just one thing remains the same, the quality of the food you get to enjoy. Varying not only with the seasons, but with the local availability, the restaurant’s ’25-mile menu’ delivers the highest quality produce from local growers and farmers from a wide range of meats, fish, fruit and vegetables as well as some spectacular cheese such as the delicious Bath Blue. Every part of this hotel chain’s ethos is evident in the restaurant. From the freshness of the ingredients to the comforting country styling which offers up a cosy retreat during the cold winter months. With open fires and an eclectic mix of furniture, both the public areas and the bedrooms deliver an exciting prospect. Every drink served up at the bar is presented in a unique glass which only adds to its charm and the equally varied seating and artworks creates an incredible space in which to enjoy an evening cocktail. During the colder periods with the smell of the open fire drifting throughout the grand house the welcoming appeal is somewhat heightened and although there is plenty of seating to go around, you will not want to wait too long before heading to the bar. Those closest to the fire are unfortunately finite. Interestingly though, the smokey undertone continues past the open fires thanks to the onsite smokehouse which provides a number of delectable treats to enjoy at breakfast, dinner or as a snack. Despite the property being so impressive in both stature and design, the real star of the show is outside. The kitchen garden, as with every other property in the family - besides The Pig in the Wall - is the key to its success and it is clear to see why it thepighotel.com/near-bath

TRAVEL

THE PIG NEAR BATH has been so successful. You are welcomed in to a world usually reserved for employees or owners which has a solely functional purpose‌to provide produce for a restaurant or hotel. What The Pig have managed to do and especially at The Pig near Bath, is engage guests in the process and in doing so help them understand it. Dining in the restaurant becomes an altogether different experience once you know that the kale you are eating was the same piece you saw in the ground during your morning stroll. It genuinely makes you consider your menu choices in a way that you might otherwise not and will more than likely make you think about the process you go through when dining at home. For city dwellers, it is the ultimate escape from the norm. Very few and far between restaurants - if any - can boast such an incredible cycle from ground to plate due to restrictive land availability. However it’s not just that the land is more readily available, they have created a world in which it invites guests to explore, to really engage with the vegetable garden, to enjoy the pigs rolling in the mud and the chickens frantically running around their pen. You become engulfed with a sense of deep understanding and an

urge to continue the lifestyle when you return home. Usually an impossible task for those with nothing more than a few window boxes, but nonetheless a reason to consider where the vegetables you do buy come from. The Pig near Bath provides a true country escape in every sense of the phrase. Rolling countryside delivers the perfect backdrop in which to unwind from life in the big city and as with every Pig hotel, you will struggle to even see the sign from the roadside it is that well hidden. This is not a place for high heels and cocktail dresses, although not frowned upon and a necessity if dining in the luxurious private dining room for a special occasion, but more a smart casual setting where everyone expects to have been wearing wellies earlier in the day. Luxurious in many ways yet inviting on a level that is often surpassed by opulence and rules, The Pig near Bath is the ideal spot for a weekend retreat. No-one will expect you to be dressed in a certain way for breakfast, nor should you expect to receive matching cutlery and china, but it all works so perfectly that being so deliberately quirky and wrong creates an atmosphere and feel that is so very right.

TRAVEL

This theme continues throughout the hotel and in to the 29 bedrooms. No two rooms will deliver exactly the same decor, furniture and feel, so you must stay at least 29 times to work out your favourite! In saying that, there really is no need to try more than one room as each has one thing in common and that is its quality and size. From large bathrooms with freestanding baths to king-size beds and interesting furniture, you will instantly fall in love with whatever room you manage to secure. There are a few stand-out spots that are worth aiming for though. The Apple Store is a truly unique room located in the kitchen garden with features over two floors, a wood burning stove, large monsoon showers and a freestanding bath. This ‘rustic shed’ hidden within the Kitchen Garden was originally used as an Apple Store and Garden Shed but has now been transformed into the ultimate cosy retreat. You can alternatively choose ‘The Hide’ which is also located in the kitchen garden with two floors but possesses something quite different. A room with a view is an understatement as the resident herd of 80 Fallow Deer are able to appear right outside your window. If you stay in either of these spectacular rooms, you will also benefit from easy access to the ‘spa’. Hidden away in a converted ‘garden shed’, you can delve even deeper into relaxation with a massage or treatment of choice. This shed, much like the rest of

the hotel, is not as you might imagine. Luxuriously transformed, it is the perfect place to escape and unwind with the surreal sound of actual birdsong flowing through the walls rather than a prerecorded digital rendition. Every part of ‘The Pig’ experience has been expertly crafted to create a comforting escape from the modern world, throwing you into a much simpler, rewarding and inviting realm. The way you truly engage with the earth and enjoy the fruits it bears is not only unique in the hotel industry but allows you to take full advantage of this spectacular hotel and its surroundings.

Yes, that’s right, the price stays the same regardless of how many toppings you choose whether it be all the meat from pepperoni, chorizo, salami, chicken, spicy beef and ham, to loads of fresh salad like olives, sweetcorn, spicy red pepper, garlic and varying types of cheese including dairy free mozzarella! Made in front of you, the team are not tight on the toppings either giving you a generous amount of whatever you fancy. Set pizzas and salads are also available for ease if you don’t have time to make your own with names such as Lucy Sunshine and Dillon James, and you can wash it all down with a host of soft drinks, beers, wines and

fabulously thick milkshakes which again come with a range of mix in toppings such as oreo cookie and peppermint pieces. Large and airy, the two floor restaurant works really well in the busy location of Leicester Square and don’t worry if you can’t finish it all, MOD have lots of takeaway boxes available for you to finish it later and even deliver online orders. As the fastest growing restaurant in the US and voted as one of the best places to work, MOD is also committed to making a positive social impact in each location they serve, for the London launch they teamed up with charity Make Some Noise who received 100% of ALL sales during the Grand Opening – something MOD does for every restaurant opening with a local charity partner. We really can’t rave about it enough and given the price January is no excuse not to try it!

Hipchips

Flavour arden, 4- New London Street, ff Hart Lane, London C3R 7NA 020 72 5 0090 avourgarden.co.uk

Surprisingly filling considering it really is crisps and dip, quirky eatery Hipchips is still going strong from its base in Soho. With the aim of reinventing the potato crisp and bring an entirely new eating concept to Soho, freshly cooked and served straight to diners on a conveyor belt, Hipchips pairs hand-made potato crisps with a diverse range of delicious savoury and sweet fresh dips. Creating new flavour combinations and a novel approach to sharing. Cooked in front of guests the simple concept Hipchips uses five heritage and vintage potato varieties to make its crisps. Grown in the North Of England, each potato used by Hipchips has its own unique natural colour and flavour, resulting in a range of vibrant, delicious and distinctive crisps. Head chef Scott Davis (Providores, Mirabelle, Fifty St James) has used his vast knowledge and experience of diverse culinary styles and flavours to create a unique menu of dips that are influenced by classic British pairings and international flavours. From Avocado and Wasabi, Baba Ganoush to Moroccan Yoghurt and pickled onion cheese fondue, these moreish dips are all made from the finest seasonal ingredients, and designed to mix, match and share with friends. Davis’s innovative menu also offers up a variety of sweet dip options and with it, so you can really make a meal out of it. The crisps are dusted with cinnamon sugar instead of salt and perfectly matched with classic ‘pudding dips’ such as Peanut Butter and Jelly, S’mores & chocolate and salted caramel dip combinations. While some flavours such as the Katsu Curry sound intriguing, they don’t always necessarily taste as you would imagine. However, that said, and offering a takeaway option seen as seating is limited, this is certainly a must try for any avid crisp lover. What’s more surprising is that you may find yourself preferring the sweet flavours that you wouldn’t have thought you would. hipchips.com

Jinjuu Mayfair Having launched on 5th October last year, Jinjuu Mayfair is the third Korean restaurant founded and showcased by multitalented celebrity chef Judy Joo. American born Judy earned an engineering degree at the prestigious Columbia University but after years of working in corporate life she decided to follow her true passion and enrolled in a French culinary institute. From there she went on to be a major success appearing regularly on several television shows and even writing her own book ‘Korean Food Made Simple’. The first restaurant was launched successfully in Soho in January 2015 and Jinjuu Hong Kong followed a year later. Judy saw a gap in the market and realised the potential of an exciting, new and unique experience which offered customers a new perspective to Korean dining. One that is very different to what was currently available in the typically casual Korean eateries. Situated in the heart of Mayfair, Jinjuu (meaning pearl) brings together traditional and contemporary styles of Korean cuisine. Inspired by her Korean roots, Judy has created a menu which adds eastern flavours and spices to her dishes. Showcasing traditional Korean street food at its best but with a modern twist, the comprehensive menu offers a selection of Anju (small bites) which include mouth-watering delights such as their famous crispy fried prawn sae-woo pops or the delicious Mandoo selection of succulent beef and pork dumplings seasoned delicately with Korean spices. The bespoke prawn crackers are hand-made and the bulgogi beef sliders consist of two grass-fed beef fillet skewers with classic bulgogi marinade

and kimchi béarnaise. Main courses offer sharing platters but highlights from the large plate selection include twice cooked, literally melt in you mouth Spanish Iberico Bossam pork belly with Korean ginger glaze, spring onion salad and pork crackling. Bibimbap (mixed rice) is served in a traditional stone bowl which is filled with multi grain rice, seasonal vegetables and topped with a fried egg, seaweed and lotus crisp. You can order extras to go with this such as thinly sliced bulgogi beef fillet or whole chicken breast. A range of sides are also available and popular ones include seaweed tru e french fries or kimchi fried rice with pancetta. Also available is the famous signature dish of Korean fried chicken for one which has a whole baby poussin. Each dish is a visual delight and comes with Judy’s signature dipping sauces. If you can manage dessert, the yuzu cr me brulee is delicious. The bar offers a wide selection of whiskies and cocktails based on Soju (Korea’s vodka) and Asian influences as well as an impressive wine selection from around the world. Fine wines are served by the glass through a coravin where the cork remains sealed keeping the wine fresh. The impressive menu here has so much variety and so much to offer making this venue an ideal spot to enjoy a sophisticated but relaxed dinner with friends. You can also make the most of a varied Set Lunch Menu with two courses such as Chicken Lollies, Open Tuna Taco, Bulgogi Beef Sliders and Steamed Hake for just £17.50 or 3 courses for £22.00. A range of Cold Pressed Juice is available for an additional £3.00 or add £5.00 for a glass of wine.

Zoran’s Mixology Masterclass

with Zoran Peric

Zoran Peric is a cocktails and spirits expert with a background in launching and managing some of London’s top bars such as the Soho Hotel. He has also worked with some of the country’s leading drinks brands, working with them to develop their brand and drinks concepts.

2017 is finally here and as Burns Night will soon be upon us, what better way to celebrate, than by indulging in some top quality whisky. However, with such amazing liquids to choose from, where does one start? Should one stick strictly to Scotch? Burns Night is the celebration of the life and work of Scottish poet Robert Burns. It’s easy to think that Robert “Bobby Burns, legendary Scottish poet (and doubtless, a lover of great Scottish

whisky) would be amazed to see how much the world of whisky has evolved since his day. It’s interesting to see how in the past 100 years or so, distillers have evolved the whisky category, taking the Scot’s proud liquid and bringing it not only to the forefront of the spirits market, but to a wider global audience. One very clear example of this is the distance this liquid has travelled from the isles of Scotland to the isolated islands of Japan. Whilst Scotch was an inspiration in the history of Japanese whisky, Japanese distillers are now highly respected in their own right for their own individual quality and craft. Take the Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 for example, taking the coveted position as Jim Murray’s 2015 ‘World’s Best Whisky’ award – the first time a non-Scotch whisky made it to the top spot. This achievement paved the way for the Canadian Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye to take pride place the following year as well. It’s incredible whiskies like these which elevate and constantly challenge the status quo of the whisky category, enabling us to enjoy high quality drams from all over the world. For an alternative Burns Night, raise a glass to Bobby Burns with a dram of Suntory Japanese Whisky. Bobby Burns cocktail: 60ml Hakushu 12 Year Old; 30ml vermouth; 7.5ml Benedictine D.O.M Liqueur Yamazaki Boshu: 50ml Yamazaki 12 Year Old; 25ml Mandarin Napoleon liqueur; 2 drops Orange bitters And if you’re looking to enjoy Japanese whisky with a traditional burns night meal, then try a drizzle of Yamazaki whisky sauce over your haggis, alongside Yamazaki 18 Years Old served with a hand carved ice ball.

your Mercedes New Luxury Coupe Following the recent explosion in coupe offerings across the premium market, Mercedes have raised the bar with their new E-Class iteration. Not only stunning to look at, but packing the expected German craftsmanship underneath. Also, an original Merc’ from 1936 with some equally exciting aspects to enjoy.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe | 1936 Mercedes-Benz V170 Cabrio-Limousine

MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS COUPE

Coupé with a Touch of Class With its clear and sensual design and its ability to comfortably seat four people, the new E-Class Coupé combines stylish design cues with state-of-the-art technology. It also offers the intelligence of the E-Class family with full smartphone integration, widescreen cockpit and the latest driver assistance systems with the option of semi-autonomous driving. Powerful engines with low exhaust emissions and comfortable suspensions with selective damping provide the guarantee of a sporty and agile driving experience. After the world’s most intelligent executive saloon, the estate and the all-terrain, the successful E-Class family now welcomes another new member: the Coupé. “With its clear, aesthetic lines, our new E-Class Coupé appeals equally to heart and mind. It condenses contemporary luxury, agile sportiness and high-tech engineering into an automotive personality with esprit, offering exclusive, refined driving pleasure,” says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and responsible for

Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. Based technically on the Saloon, the Coupé showcases the next step in the evolution of the Mercedes-Benz design language. The new Coupé exhibits a puristic, surface-accentuated design with reduced lines and sensual forms. Both hot and cool, the reduced design idiom represents beauty and elegance while emphasising the Coupé’s sporty and luxurious personality. The coupé proportions typical of Mercedes-Benz are characterised by a distinctive front end with low-positioned sports grille including a central star, a long bonnet with powerdomes, and four frameless side windows. Equally typical of a Mercedes coupé are the two-part, extremely flat LED tail lamps, which, in combination with LED multibeam headlamps, celebrate the world premiere of a welcome feature. When the vehicle is opened, the taillight LEDs illuminate successively from the centre of the vehicle outwards. On locking mercedes-benz.co.uk

the vehicle, the light sequence runs in the opposite direction. Both are additionally combined with an up and down dimming feature. This taillight show welcomes and says goodbye to the vehicle user similarly to the familiar welcome feature of the blue optical-fibre show in the front headlamp. Thanks to innovative crystal optics, the tail lamps also have a brilliant appearance reminiscent of the glow of a jet engine. The interior of the new E-Class Coupé embodies the synthesis of sporty emotion and luxurious intelligence. The two optionally available high-resolution 12.3-inch displays - unique in this segment - are merged under a single lens to produce a floating ‘Widescreen Cockpit’ effect. This emphasises the width, alongside the fascia-spanning trim, which is finished with a dynamic sweep in the door panel. Positioned in the driver’s direct field of vision, the instrument cluster shows virtual instruments, which can be selected by the driver in three different styles, “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”, depending on which information and views the driver chooses. The entry-level model combines two round dials and a 7-inch colour display cluster with a central display featuring an 8.4-inch screen diagonal. The round dials, instrument cluster and central

display are installed in a single frame with a high-gloss pianolacquer look. The newly designed air vents are heavily influenced by the look of a turbine engine. They are styled down to the smallest detail and finished in silver shadow. Touch control buttons on the steering wheel enable the driver to control the instrument cluster and multimedia system using finger swipes, without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. The E-Class Coupé is also available with a touchpad in the centre console, which can recognise handwriting, plus the ‘Linguatronic’ voice control system. There are also direct-access buttons for controlling the air conditioning, for example, and for convenient activation and deactivation of certain driver assistance systems. High-grade materials and contemporary colours come together to create a sporty, yet luxurious, feel. There is a choice of two new light wood trim packages in open-pore and high-gloss finishes. The interior lighting uses durable, energy-saving LED technology. The same applies to the ambient lighting with 64 colours. There is also the AMG line which adds AMG bodystyling and larger AMG wheels. The pins in the diamond radiator grille

are chrome-plated, while the brake discs on the front axle are perforated. The interior features seats finished in Artico Dinamica in black with grey contrasting topstitching the seat comfort package and an AMG leather sports steering wheel. Night package is optionally available on E-Class CoupĂŠ, including design details in high-gloss black and tinted windows. With a length of 4,826 mm, a width of 1,860 mm and a height of 1,430 mm, the new E-Class CoupĂŠ is clearly larger than its predecessor. The main benefit of the wider track, with 1,605 mm at the front (+67 mm) and 1,609 mm at the rear (+68 mm), is the enhanced driving dynamics. Its increased dimensions provide passengers with more interior space and comfort - especially in terms of rear legroom, front and rear shoulder room and rear headroom. A range of powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines are available including the new 2.0-litre diesel engine launched in the latest E-Class Saloon. At launch, there is an initial choice between one diesel and three petrol

engines with a range of outputs from 184 hp to 333 hp. Further engine variants and 4MATIC versions are set to follow. Designed to meet the future RDE limits, the four-cylinder diesel engine from the new family of Mercedes-Benz engines opens up a new dimension in efficiency. With a displacement of two litres, the new diesel engine delivers 194 hp, while the E 220d impresses with a combined NEDC average consumption of 71 mpg. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 106 grams per kilometre. In addition, the four-cylinder with single-stage turbocharger and variable turbine geometry is distinguished by a high level of refinement. Both the cylinder head and the crankcase are made of aluminium. The Mercedes-Benz-developed Nanoslide surface coating efficiently reduces the friction between cylinder liner and steel piston. All the models available at launch are equipped as standard with the 9G-Tronic ninespeed automatic t r a n s m i s s i o n , which allows fast gearshifts along with lower engine speeds. This has a particularly beneficial effect on efficiency and noise.

Pre-War Stunner 1936 Mercedes-Benz V170 Cabrio-Limousine

OUT OF THIS WORLD

Setting the standard and becoming the German marque’s most popular model prior to the Second World War, the Mercedes-Benz 170 V reclaimed its position at the top following its reintroduction postwar. The ‘V’ was an abbreviation of ‘Vorn’ (front) which was added to diff erentiate the model from its more contemporary rear-engined sister model ‘H’ for ‘Heck’ (rear). Packing a 1.7-litre four cylinder engine producing a claimed 38PS, the 170 V boasted rear-wheel drive and a four speed synchromesh manual transmission. This early left-hand-drive example from 1936 comes in the model’s Cabrio-Limousine guise which features a four door body and full length foldaway canvas roof. Finished with red and cream coachwork and matching cream interior with red piping, it is a stunning example. It has just been subjected to a full chassis up restoration and engine rebuild with extensive photographic evidence and is a must-see.

PROPERTY

What’s Next For London Property? with William Delaney, Managing Director at Lawrence Ward & Co. We enter 2017 with a palpable level of apprehension carried forward from the final 6 months of last year with ongoing uncertainty regarding the approach to and outcome of, Brexit negotiations after the triggering of Article 50, unresolved serious economic structural problems within the Eurozone, a new US President and administration etc, etc. The City of London property market is influenced by these events, to a far greater degree than any other part of the UK due to The City’s worldwide strategic importance in banking, finance, capital markets insurance and legal services. The dominant motivations for moving home (typically better school catchment area, a growing family, better transport facilities etc) that apply in other parts of the country are rarely applicable to the City of London property market where confidence is key to the decision making process. The prime residential property market in central London had several years of rapid price growth. Three successive Stamp Duty increases since 2012, resulting in a rise from 5% to 15% for some purchases, alongside other aggressive tax impositions, has seen the luxury end of the market suffer a discernible price correction with marked falls in sales activity. The current “stabilisation” of prices has been further compounded by capital gains tax on disposal of

property by non-residents and proposed changes to tax relief for landlords. Whilst Prices seem to have remained resilient, there has been a dramatic fall in transaction levels vs the previous year. Once buyers become accustomed to the new tax regime and there is better economic and political clarity, confidence will undoubtedly return. The overriding factors that underpin the London property market, stable government, a robust and fair legal system combined with an established reputation as a world class centre for business and leisure attracting an international workforce and clientele will again come to the fore in the decision making process. The residential property market in London has never been particularly volatile and definitely not so in the City of London. I expect that we may well see small increases in capital values in the second and third quarters of 2017. Meanwhile, it’s a case of holding steady and taking a medium to long term view. We have been providing estate agency and property management services in the City of London and surrounding areas for nearly 20 years. We offer sound and straightforward advice to our clients combined ethical principles of doing business. If you would like more information about how we may be of assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Using Evergreens in the Garden with Kate Gould

Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer with more than a decade’s hands-on experience transforming gardens of all sizes and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where she has been awarded three Gold medals. If you would like to know more about our services please contact Kate at kategouldgardens.com

Winter is traditionally a time when the garden looks bare. The deciduous herbaceous perennials have died back, the annuals have long been removed, the trees have lost their leaves and everything is looking a little drab if not outright boring. This is where evergreens really come into their own and if you have planted carefully they will form a backbone to the winter garden that ensures you have something of interest to look at all through the year. Sometimes when we think evergreen we think of Holly and Ivy or perhaps topiary forms but there are so many more evergreen plants to choose from than these. First let’s consider the perimeter of the garden. Height is very important when considering planting, you don’t want all your interest at ground level and the walls or fences can be very stark and empty if they are not greened up or carefully planted. Evergreen wall trained shrubs and climbers are a good place to start with fences as they hide a multitude of sins all year round. There are some suggestions below for some evergreen shrubs that

you could plant in front of your fences (depending of course on the aspect) and also some climbers to consider remembering in most cases you will have to provide supports for them in terms of tensioned wires so you can tie in the exuberant growth. Shrubs: Ceanothus ‘Autumnal Blue’; Elaeagnus x ebbingei; Garrya elliptica ‘James Roof ’. Climbers: Clematis armandii; Trachelospermum jasminoides; Akebia quinata There are a multitude of plants with fabulous winter stems and bark, all of which look beautiful backlit on a crisp sunny day: Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire - as its name suggests a rey copper set of stems; Prunus serrula - one of the less blousy Cherries when in bloom this tree makes up for it with shiny dark burgundy bark; Acer griseum one of the loveliest of trees with fantastic autumn coloured leaves but also cinnamon coloured peeling bark. Whatever your choice, with a little planning and the placement of some carefully chosen evergreen shrubs to accentuate your colour scheme, winter need never be boring in the garden.
