It’s easy to forget that A. Lange & Söhne as we

era. In this brief period, the Saxon house has developed 51 calibres to ensure its manufacture status – a dazzling number of new movements by any standards. Part of the appeal of Lange & Söhne is, undoubtedly, the exclusivity. The company produces only a few thousand watches a year, compared to other luxury houses which issue timepieces in the tens of thousands. An attitude prevails among Lange wearers, too, one of discretion, of an appreciation of superlative engineering. It’s almost like a club, such is the select nature of ownership. And the company maintains this prestige by issuing both simple, classic models like the 1815, and at the other extreme, complicated masterpieces such as this year’s eitwerk Minute Repeater with the unusual 10-minute intervals for its chiming. As for the 1815, it is an exemplar of simplicity, offering only the hours, minutes and seconds. It is as much a statement watch as any, because it suggests discretion and refinement; it just doesn’t shout about it. Recalling the style of watch pioneered by the founder, it employs Arabic numerals, the railway-track minute scale and the subsidiary seconds rather than the more modernistic sweep type, providing the utmost in legibility. This year, to mark the 200th birthday of the founder, the 1815 has been issued in a commemorative form with black dial, platinum case and special engraving on the back. Collectors will fight for this one as the special edition of the 1815 “200th Anniversary F. A. Lange” is limited

eitwerk with a new function.

This timepiece ticks all the boxes for hard-core horophiles because it mixes up complications to create a look like no other watch, and it was achieved without any diminishing of the legibility. Its most obvious attraction is the use of jumping numerals to show the time, rather than a hand pointing to indices. Such watches are rare enough, and watch enthusiasts who hate quartz, LCDs, smart watches and other battery-driven abominations love them because they are, technically speaking, “digital”. For the soft-in-the-head who think that digital displays are anything new, this is a shock. With the Zeitwerk, the hour is shown in a window on the left, at what would be the “9 o’clock” position on a conventional dial. The minutes have a window of their own at the “3 o’clock” point. Above is a power reserve,

indicating

how

much wind is left on the watch, while below is a subdial for second, read with a hand. This alone is enough to

but it is also a minute repeater that chimes the time on demand using seven

glorious,

musical

tones. Tradition shows us that one could have repeaters that performed the hours, quarters, minutes or other combinations, the complexity and price increasing with the intervals on offer. A Lange & Söhne has now added a new twist to much-respected genre. With the

eitwerk Minute Repeater, the

company has devised a model with a striking mechanism that sounds the hours and minutes, as well as ten-minute intervals. This is believed to be the first wristwatch to do so, which the company wisely calls a “decimal repeater”. The acoustic sequence naturally matches the digitally displayed time when the user activates the striking mechanism via a pusher at the 10 o’clock position. The time is sounded with a low-pitched tone for each hour, with a double tone for each elapsed tenminute period. A high-pitched tone indicates each minute. This

manually-wound

masterpiece

has

no

rivals.

Appropriately, it arrives precisely two centuries after the birth of the company’s founder. There is no doubt that he would have approved.

The 25th edition of the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie provided a brandnew opportunity for Roger Dubuis to affirm its acknowledged status as the specialist of architectural and technical mechanics. It did so in particularly spectacular style with an array of Excalibur models showcasing its signature role as the pioneer of contemporary skeleton calibres, while taking this savoir-faire to the next level with an entirely skeletonised Excalibur

Last but far from least, ladies were honoured with the Excalibur Broc liande models evoking the mysterious forest of Arthurian legends – a perfect example of the Roger Dubuis Creative Skeletons. Decorative jewellery elements are cleverly entwined with the skeleton flying tourbillon movement and the dial, and the skeleton inspiration for this ultra-feminine interpretation is drawn from the delicate lattice-work serving to support ivy as it softly and seductively winds its way along walls or fences. Feedback during the Salon has confirmed that these messages came across loud and clear.”

Swiss watchmaker Raymond Weil is proud to commemorate the hundred year anniversary of the birth of Frank Sinatra with a special limited edition timepiece reinterpreted from its classic maestro collection. As part of the global “Sinatra 100” centennial celebration, the maestro Frank Sinatra Limited Edition watch pays homage to the legendary artist and his iconic persona. With restraint, elegance and precision, the timepiece evokes a sense of admiration for the entertainer’s illustrious career. “It is a great honour to have partnered with the Frank Sinatra Enterprises to create a design that celebrates this special occasion. Frank Sinatra was a charismatic character who left an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of many generations; he embodied an era, a style, and a tradition and was above all a passionate man of extraordinary talent. As a music-loving family company, it is perfectly fitting that we pay tribute to this undisputed maestro of music with a limited edition piece in our maestro collection,” says Elie Bernheim, CEO, Raymond Weil. “Frank Sinatra understood the vital importance of time and when preparing his music he employed what he had named ‘the heartbeat tempo.’ For that reason, he insisted that his wristwatch would have the utmost mechanical integrity and construction to guarantee many years of faithful and accurate service, says rank Sinatra, Junior. “Master of horology, Raymond Weil has steadfastly maintained this degree of excellence and in the centennial celebration of the birth of Frank Sinatra, I am proud to see my father’s name associated with this magnificent timepiece. The Millenary 20 years since it was first created, the Millenary is an intricately considered design that reflects the multilayered nature of the woman who wears it. For 2015, Audemars Piguet has launched an elegant new addition to the collection that challenges perceptions of what women’s watch design can be today. The

to

creating movements for women is displayed in the new hand-wound Millenary 5201 movement. Three years in the making, its slim, elegant form is a salute to the aesthetic balance that is achieved when old-world artisanship meets new-world design. The new calibre - a hand–wound Manufacture movement where the balance wheel is revealed - beats at the heart of each 2015 piece. Its form has been created to fit exactly the intriguing oval case shape that defines the Millenary, and follows perfectly and ergonomically around the curves of the wrist. Carefully composed for women with diamond settings, they are truly beautiful pieces.

Slim d’Hermès Creative, minimalist, and stylish, the new slim d’Hermès timepieces are understated and light, showcasing a new slender style for both men and women. Created with Herm s Manufacture movement H1950, the gent’s styles come in rose gold or 316L Steel and the choice of two alligator straps – matt Havana and matt black. The timepieces boast a power reserve of 42 hours and the numeral decoration is sleek and simple. sagging skin that needs the lift until it looks firm thus achieving the desired effect. The remaining sutures are then knotted, cut and hidden within the skin itself leaving no visible evidence of the sutures themselves. This non-surgical process takes about one hour and visibly produces immediate results. The skin is genuinely lifted and tightened, and apart from when the local anaesthetic is administered, no pain at all is felt because you are numb throughout the procedure. However, Doctor Tonks is quite candid in telling her patients that despite what they may have read elsewhere about this Silhouette Soft procedure, you have to be prepared that bruising is a very real probability and although recovery time is quick and leaves no scars, there may be a little puckering where the threads are inserted but this does tend to settle after about a week. Recovery time is quick and results last about eighteen months but you will definitely notice the best results after about three months. This is because the threads which are used are made from polylactic acid (PLA) which eventually is absorbed into the skin. Collagen formation occurs around the thread and this helps to create volume and freshness around the face and as Doctor Tonks explains in her blog, the lifting properties of Silhouette Soft create immediate results whilst the collagen stimulation properties give the longer lasting results. PLA is entirely safe and has been used by the medical profession for many years. It is also completely biodegradable. These threads are not visible under the skin and the more threads that are used at one time, the greater the lift you can

The Silhouette Soft does not replace a conventional face lift but instead offers a restorative potential somewhere between this and a facial and offers patients an innovative, minimally invasive approach to achieving facelift-like results and achieving the look of dramatically younger skin in just over an hour. A Mesmerising View of Kenya Unrivalled in beauty and striving for a sustainable future, Kenya pushes the boundaries of belief.

There are many wonders in the world, most out of reach, but every so often you are awarded the opportunity to experience one first hand. The great pyramids stand proudly at the top of Africa, but head a little further south and you reach one of the most remarkable places on the planet. The Maasai Mara, vast in size, tranquil in appearance and bursting with incredible wildlife, is a truly magical place. Thankfully, it is also a great example of Kenya’s efforts to

of the tourist trade to ensure the conservation can contiune.

The Kigio Wildlife Conservancy is one such example, offering a substantial 5.5 square miles of protected land packed full of wildlife. Just a two hour drive from Nairobi and a great stop on your itinerary, the conservancy is home to two accommodation choices, Kigio Wildlife Camp and the Malewa Wildlife Lodge. Both camps work alongside the local villagers to deliver a welcoming and unique Kenyan experience. This is the very definition of an eco camp, supporting both the local people and the wildlife within, every aspect of your stay is defined by nature rather than your desire for unnecessary luxuries. For example, you can have a perfectly fine shower in the morning, but it must fall within the hot water schedule otherwise you will be enjoying a chilly wake-up and the meals that you eat will be provided - in part - by the local growers. The best part is that any reusable waste is given back to the farmers in order to fertilise their crops and build products which they can sell such as necklaces made from magazines and baskets made from plants. It is such a well balanced relationship, that both parties are happy in their position whilst the whole time, the wildlife is being protected, drawing more tourists in to provide further means to protect. And this is the sustainable view that is spreading across Kenya. Thanks to the location of the Kigio Wildlife Conservancy, positioned between lakes Nakuru and Naivasha, you can enjoy a stay whilst visiting a range of other areas. Take a day trip to the lakes and you can be back in time for a breathtaking sundowner overlooking the vast Great Rift Valley followed by an evening game drive in search of the elusive animals that only venture out at night. The conservancy holds approximately 3,500 heads of wildlife including the endangered Rothschild Giraffe, a 200 strong herd of buffalo, zebra, waterbuck, impala, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle, eland, hyena, leopard, hippo and over 200 bird species, so you won’t be short on wildlife spotting, just make sure you take some time to appreciate the animals in plain sight, not through your camera lens!

strange as that sounds - to the domestic airport where you can catch a flight to pretty much anywhere in Kenya, but there is only really one choice once you have experienced some of the wildlife first-hand...The Maasai Mara National Reserve. Boasting a whopping 583 sq mi of land, this is merely the tip of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem which covers an unimaginable 9,700 sq mi across Tanzania and Kenya. If you are looking for a safari, you have come to the right place. On arrival at the airstrip, you are welcomed by wildlife, quite literally. Warthogs canter away as the plane approaches and buffalo remain as if to indicate their lack of care for your presence. This is the true magic of Kenya, you don’t even have a chance to get out of the plane before you want to digitally record every single thing before your eyes. From the airstrip, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a game drive to your chosen accommodation, however, few come close to the experience offered by the recently opened Mara Engai Wilderness Lodge. Perched on top of the Estoit Olooloo Escarpment, the lodge offers unrivalled views over the Maasai Mara taking in the sheer beauty of the landscape as well as the annual wildebeest migration route, a spectacle in its own right. Needless to say, there is plenty to see on you ‘transfer’. The Mara Engai lodge is fortunately positioned in an

Everyone who makes the decision to go on a safari immediately begins to plan in their head the animals that they want to see, the big five’ is usually first on the list, but once you arrive, you instantly forget all about any lists and try to find space in your brain to comprehend just what you are looking at. The scale of what is a relatively small part of the Maasai Mara park is vast, allowing you to experience game drives which can take up the entire day, without stopping and not going over the same patch twice. Remarkably, it is very easy to see wildlife thanks to the conservation work that these reserves are tirelessly doing behind the scenes. It is easy - when you are within touching distance of a large female elephant and her recently born calf - to forget the wider situation and devastation that these animals are facing. Within the national park, poaching and risk to the animals is reducing and at a very low rate compared to other regions yet the issue remains that these animals are not and will not be confined, they are completely wild which allows them to travel to areas where the situation is very different. Fortunately, the Kenyan authorities and local people are keen to build on the success that the Maasai Mara National Park has achieved and have now full surrounded the standing park boundary on the Kenyan side with additional conservancies, expanding the area to almost double the size. This provides further haven for the animals before their long migration back to the Serengeti. July is at the peak of tourism in the Maasai Mara, thanks to the stunning scenes that the annual migration offers, but you can find some fantastic times during the year that will offer you an equally exhilarating experience with far fewer crowds to spoil the view. The Green Season is a great time to visit with many of the animals already at home on the vast

grassland and the cooler temperatures help to improve your chances of spotting some big game. Once you have exhausted yourself - you will never exhaust the scenery or wildlife - there is a third and final leg that perfectly rounds off any Kenyan adventure. Arrange a transfer flight back to Nairobi and catch the plane to the east coast for some of the most gorgeous, blue seas, the Indian Ocean. Saruni Ocean in Msambweni is just a short transfer from Diani airport and offers the idyllic hideaway in which to relax, contemplate and appreciate what you have experienced during the rest of your trip. The resort is an exclusive selection of villa-style properties, all with stunning sea views and reserved to limited numbers to ensure you can enjoy the space as if it were your own private property. If you feel like you have a bit of energy left over, the hotel offers a number of activities including kite-surfing and paddle boarding and also helps you to calm down after all of the excitement with sunrise yoga, the perfect start to any day. Views overlooking the stunning ocean and a class to suit your level of ability prepares you for the day ahead, whatever you choose to do, whether you head to the local markets or just want to make the most of the relaxing nature the resort offers. The on-site spa can make a much needed break from the sun and allows you to slip even further into your relaxed state, ready to return to the real world.

After checking in and marvelling at how wonderful your room is, enjoy an aperitif or cocktail at the bar before heading off across the terrace and down to dinner. The Seaside Palm Beach prides itself on providing good quality, local and seasonal products which is evident in all the superb gastronomic delights that are on offer daily. They have a passion for creating unique and imaginative dishes and guests can either choose to dine at the à la carte Bodega restaurant which serves traditional cuisine such as tapas, the Esencia with its acclaimed Mediterranean specialities or they can go to the main restaurant. This is on a beautiful terrace which has two levels and also has a variety of à la carte dishes but only on a slightly less formal basis because after your starters and main course, which are served to you, you can then help yourselves to all kinds of desserts, fruits and cheeses from a buffet area. Matching local wines are specially chosen to compliment each dish. This spacious terrace is where breakfast is served every morning enabling guests to enjoy the view of the beautiful gardens in the pleasant, morning fresh air. Bacon, eggs cooked to your liking, fish, cheese, continental meats, yoghurts, cereals, waffles, fresh juices and anything else you can think of are all ready for you to serve yourself and eat as much as you like. The hotel is also very proud of the fact that all their desserts, cakes, bread and bread rolls are made in their very own pastry shop and bakery. As always, the perfectly mannered and hard working waiting staffs are as attentive and pleasant as ever. They all seem to be very happy and jolly and are eager to make sure that you have everything you need and their attention to detail when cleaning is very impressive. Famed for its excellent cuisine, this main restaurant offers themed barbecue buffet nights three evenings a week. Creating an exciting atmosphere, delicacies from Spain, Italy and Asia are freshly prepared and cooked by the hotel’s expert chefs as you watch. Fresh lobster, oysters, crab and all manner of seafood are available on the seafood night as well as meat, fish, vegetarian and other kinds of grilled, mouth watering delights. It seems that no expense is spared when it comes to meal times and every night you will come away with a memorable dining experience which leaves nothing to be desired. After dinner, you can enjoy more drinks and nibbles in the Bar Salón whilst you listen to live music which goes on six evenings a week until 1pm. Order a gin and tonic or brandy and the experienced bar staff will prepare it in a fascinating routine. From the shaving of the cucumber and the pouring of the tonic water down a long skewer into the glass to the warming of the brandy, it is something you don’t very often see and another memorable experience. This is a perfect way to round off a perfect evening. The Seaside Palm Beach also offers a wide range of facilities for guests to enjoy and hidden amongst the palm trees in a secluded spot away from the main pool is the luxurious Spa and Wellness Centre. Designed as a tranquil haven where you can escape everyday life and relax, unwind and be pampered to the hilt, they specialise in a wide range of massages, body treatments and aromatherapy. Tsuki Mochi Japanese Artisan Truffles Tsuki Mochi, an artisan producer of mochi truffles has launched a beautiful range of luxury Japanese desserts, which are served chilled in two unique editions, Yuzu Lemon Cheesecake and Dark Chocolate. Made from pounded and sweetened rice flour, mochi is a delicacy in Japan where it has been eaten for over one thousand years and is now set to become an exciting new culinary trend in Britain. Japan’s favourite dessert and its best kept secret, Tsuki Mochi is on a mission to put mochi on the map in Britain. Traditionally filled with a sweetened red bean paste, this artisan brand has updated the classic mochi recipe with contemporary flavours. Each truffle bursts with a velvety smooth and decadent ganache, creating the combination of contrasting textures that makes each mouthful so unique. The soft and bouncy, gummy bear-like texture of mochi is just as special as its delicious taste. Beloved in Japan and known as the “Q texture” in the Far East, “Q” is to culinary consistency what umami is to taste and will be familiar to adventurous Western palates from the chewy tapioca balls found at the bottom of Taiwanese bubble tea. It is destined to become a staple for Britain’s gastronomic trailblazers. www.tsukimochi.com

The Portrait Restaurant The Portrait Restaurant has announced its new Ciro’s Club inspired Menu, which will run alongside the highly anticipated Audrey Hepburn exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Launching on 2nd July 2015, this year being the 65th anniversary of Hepburn’s first appearance at Ciro’s, the Ciro’s Club Menu will run each Thursday for the first month of the exhibition. Exploring the lesser-known early years of the celebrated actress, the exhibition will include portraits of her family and images from her time in London. In its heyday, Ciro’s was a vibrant London hotspot and the first dance club to compete with the established London restaurant scene. London, long before she became a Hollywood starlet. The original menu from Ciro’s Petite Sauce Tartare, in which Hepburn first performed, boasted “cocktails”, an “oyster and snack bar”, and “dancing on balcony”. In homage to this, the Portrait Restaurant has created a special Thursday Club menu of champagne cocktails, oysters and bar bites – serving timeless classics with a modern twist. The cocktail menu will offer Ruinart Rose Champagne with rose pearls, amongst others, while dishes will include Half a dozen oysters, Veal and ricotta meatballs and Smoked salmon with a mimosa garnish. The Oenophilist

with Edward Gerard, Wine Buyer for Harrods

Edward Gerard started his career cycling cases of fine wine round the SW1 and SW3 postcodes. Some 13 years later after a stint in the USA, and having extensively traveled and tasted his way around the wine world he finds himself with the enviable job of selecting the vast range available in the Wine Rooms at Harrods.

Sancerre is the subject of this month’s article. First let’s get the education out the way, there are two grape varieties allowed to make Sancerre and they are Sauvignon Blanc for Sancerre Blanc and Pinot Noir for Sancerre Rouge. On a recent trip to the Loire Valley I had the enviable task of visiting one of the regions greatest producers Domaine Vacheron and whist I could wax lyrical about their whites I really want to focus in on their reds. Every wine drinker on the planet has probably had a Sancerre Blanc in their lifetime and yet few will have had a Sancerre Rouge and fewer still a really great Sancerre Rouge. The reason is simple, Sauvignon Blanc is king in this part of the world and so dominates the vineyards and Pinot Noir is a fickle mistress that needs constant attention and delicate handling by a master vigneron to produce the finest wines. Having said that when it is done right, Sancerre Rouge can be every bit as spellbinding as a great Red Burgundy. In my opinion Vacheron along with Alphonse Mellot and Vincent Pinard are the very best producers of Sancerre Rouge and in general you can’t go wrong with anything they put their name to. At Vacheron their Pinot Noirs are aged in one to two year old oak barrels that were previously in residence at Domaine de la Romanee Conti and once bottled they remain at the estate until the cousins Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron family feel they are ready for the market to drink. This means that we currently have in stock their amazing 2013 Sancerre Rouge which is a blend of various vineyards and like their Sancerre Blanc this is a benchmark for all producers in the region to achieve and at £29.95 it eclipses anything from burgundy of that price point. However if the very best is what you are after then the 2008 Sancerre Rouge Belle Dame is just a drop dead gorgeous expression of Pinot Noir. Wild Raspberries and cherry fruit sing loud from the glass with notes of redcurrants and strawberries joining in with a herbaceous chorus line to round out a perfect balanced melody. This is fine art at its best, work that started in the vineyard is now available for us to savour and at £39.95 this shames most Red Burgundies at double the price.

McLaren demonstrate the meaning of success at Goodwood House

Masters of Goodwood

Success is not McLaren for many years appeared to rest on the laurels of their incredible F1 road car, however the situation was very different behind the scenes. The company and brand were working tirelessly to deveop not only a new road car to bring to the market, but a whole infrastructural foundation on which to build a successful, global brand. And the result... the MP4-12C was launched with a revolutionary carbon MonoCell design from which McLaren have thrived. Not only was this design the perfect solution to improving the efficiency of product development, but also allowed the production of open-top cars with exactly the same performance statistics as their hard-topped sisters, something which had eluded the motoring industry since the convertible was invented. Now the brand scales the globe in the road car market as well as in numerous racing series and is showing no signs

Even more exciting however was the dynamic debut of a car that you could actually own, and one that is set to launch the brands Sports Series to new heghts.
