FROM THE EDITOR

June brought with it some big news for the UK, whether for the better or for the worse. One thing is for sure, we all need some summer fun to help us through. Luckily, there is plenty on the table to keep you occupied and lift your mood. Wimbledon is well under way and the polo season is in full swing, so there is more than enough sport to keep you moving. If you prefer to eat through your worries, then fear not, there are brunches, terraces and afternoon teas aplenty across London to fullfil your every desire. You can even enjoy some tasty refreshment at Selfridges thanks to Snowflake Gelato who will be opening their doors this month, perfect for a mid shopping trip break. Or you can relax after a long

days work at one of the many rooftop spots across the capital. London may be getting a little bit too much for you altogether, so why not take a little trip down to the New Forest for the ultimate escape from everything at The Pig. Hidden well away from the mayhem of the capital in recent weeks, you can enjoy the natural surroundings and equally natural food on offer. Food, drink, sport and sun, however you decide to spend the summer months, be sure to remember that there is always something to look forward to, the Olympics are coming in August after all. With any luck, we can enjoy all of the above with an extra helping of sunshine...

Somerset House and Print Club London have announced the return of the popular Summer Screen Prints exhibition with its most extensive programme to-date. A talented array of established and emerging artists and illustrators have been invited to create limited-edition, screen-printed film posters inspired by this year’s eclectic line-up for Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House. Print Club London’s gallery curators have personally selected artists suited to each film title, with influences and styles ranging from street art to graphic art design and illustration. Each artist’s affordable, original artwork will be available to purchase exclusively from the exhibition at Somerset House and Print Club London’s website. New for this year, visitors can get involved with a range of events, demonstrations and workshops, including live screen-printing in the courtyard on selected evenings, plus two hands-on workshops each weekend. The exhibition will feature a special archive display of highlights from previous editions of Summer Screen Prints, including works by Print Club Creative Director, Rose Stallard and Kate Moross on show. Throughout the exhibition, there will be vitrines filled with sketches, early designs and further preparatory work to give visitors an insight into the artistry of screen printing. Inside the exhibition’s screening room, there will also be a rolling series of short films with interviews and behind-thescenes footage revealing each artist’s unique creative process. The line-up of 16 gifted artists and illustrators includes French artist Jean Jullien, whose Peace for Paris symbol went viral last year. He will bring his signature bold lines and vivid colours to a special re-imagining of the poster for Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown. Shakespeare refashioned at Selfridges On the occasion of the 400th anniversary year of the death of Shakespeare, Selfridges will launch Shakespeare refashioned to pay homage to the world famous writer and his works. The very contemporary and dynamic, multi-faceted store-wide take on Shakespeare is laced with comedy, tragedy and romance and incorporates exclusive fashion collaborations and a groundbreaking theatrical in-store experience. Shakespeare Refashioned will encompass Selfridges’ most ambitious window scheme to date, exclusive photography by famed English photographer (and daughter to Beatles’ Paul McCartney), Mary McCartney, exclusive products and capsule collections across every category and from all corners of the world. “Shakespeare is part of the fabric of our creative world and of contemporary society. The words spoken, the images evoked, the dreams realised, are of our time and of his. The gifted and visionary narrators brought together in celebration of Shakespeare’s life and works for Shakespeare Refashioned will tell stories we imagine the Bard would be proud of !” says Selfridges Creative Director, Linda Hewson A highlight of the campaign has to be the world-famous store’s windows. A collective of twenty international designers including Rick Owens, Dries Van Noten and Simone Rocha will each recreate an iconic scene from one of Shakespeare’s best-known works. Each window will feature either archive showpieces, a new

made-for-the-campaign product, or a mix of both to help evoke the playwright’s central themes and characters. The window scheme will be split in two phases: Act I and Act II paying homage to Shakespeare’s ever-famous motifs - Light and Dark. The windows will include exclusive womenswear and menswear pieces or collections by the designer window collaborators, as well as over 120 exclusive products from 50 fashion, beauty, food and lifestyle brands (priced £3 to £885,000), each taking inspiration from the world's pre-eminent dramatist and England's national poet. Other highlights include Selfridges’ 3,500 sq ft dedicated special events and exhibition space, The Ultralounge, becoming the Refashioned Theatre, in an exclusive collaboration with a critically acclaimed London-based theatre company. Visitors to Selfridges will experience the real time evolution of a theatre production - from audition through to set-building, rehearsals and culminating in a five week run of one of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies. From 4th July for two weeks only, one of the UK’s most exciting drama institutions, the renowned drama school RADA, will offer a host of pre-theatre workshops and masterclasses including Audition Workshops and Feedback, Production Techniques and an Introduction to Dance and Stage Combat.

The BBC Proms The BBC Proms will kick off its 122nd season on 15 July featuring more than 90 concerts over eight weeks, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. Highlights of the musical event include new Proms Director David Pickard introducing an innovative series Proms at... that explores spaces outside the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall. The series matches music to four venues across London with Shakespeare-inspired works by Purcell at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in Southwark, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle at The Chapel, Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the music of Steve Reich at the Bold Tendencies multi-storey car park in Peckham, and the return of the Proms to the Roundhouse in Camden with new work by British composer David Sawer. In keeping with the Shakespeare theme to mark 400 years since his death, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet overture launches the Proms’ celebrations of Shakespeare. Music inspired by the Bard, including orchestral works by Berlioz, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky and less familiar pieces by Hans Abrahamsen and Jonathan Dove via Kiss Me, Kate and West Side Story, all feature throughout the season.

Elsewhere the cello is put under the spotlight with 10 concertos ranging from Elgar’s Cello Concerto performed by Sol Gabetta on the First Night to the world premiere of Huw Watkins’ Cello Concerto written for and performed by his brother, Paul Watkins. A vital part of the Proms mission remains, bringing classical music to new audiences; youth music-making and youth audiences are a major focus this year. The hugely popular CBeebies Proms return, and there will be two Proms devoted to BBC Music’s Ten Pieces II, part of a ground-breaking nationwide initiative for schools designed to open up the world of classical music to primary and secondary school children. As part of a series of weekend matinee concerts aimed at family audiences, presenter Tom Service and conductor Nicholas Collon introduce and unpick Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony, played from memory by the Aurora Orchestra. With young musicians firmly at the centre of the festival, the world’s most famous classical concert, the Last Night of the Proms, opens with a BBC commission for former BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition winner Tom Harrold. Other notable events taking place over the season include, Katie Derham presenting the first ever Strictly Prom with the help of professional dancers from the BBC Television series; and due to

the Olymipics being staged in Brazil this year, a celebration of the music and musicians of Latin America with performances from the São Paulo and Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestras, pianists Martha Argerich and Gabriela Montero, conductors Daniel Barenboim and Gustavo Dudamel, cellist Sol Gabetta, and Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who appears at the Last Night of the Proms. The Proms will also pay special tribute to late musical pioneers

Pierre Boulez and David Bowie in two Late Night concerts. In the spirit of its founding vision to make the best music available to the widest audience, every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and in 2016, BBC Radio 2 and Radio 6 Music each broadcast multiple Proms. Audiences will be able to watch the Proms on BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, CBBC, CBeebies and BBC iPlayer. Proms Extra, the Saturday-evening magazine show, returns to BBC Two for its fourth season. David Pickard, Director of the BBC Proms, says: “I am hugely proud to be presenting my first season as © BBC Director of the BBC Proms. I cannot think of another festival anywhere in the world which offers such an extraordinary range of music performed by the world’s leading orchestras, conductors and soloists. The BBC’s ongoing support not only allows the Proms to reach millions through broadcasting, it also ensures that those attending concerts can hear the very finest performances at an astonishingly low cost. I look forward to continuing the founding vision of the Proms - to bring the best of classical music to the widest possible audience.” For full details of the season, or to view the BBC Proms launch film, please visit: bbc.co.uk/proms

Goodwood

Goodwood’s Festival of Speed has once again shown the world that it is at the top of the game when it comes to car shows and events. Taking in the Bugatti Veyron replacement, a one off drop-top Aston Martin roadster and a plethora of other phenomenal pieces of machinery, the crowds at Goodwood last month were not disappointed. The event didn’t only impress with the out of reach pinnacle of motorsport engineering however as it brought with it a record number of first outings for over 25 new cars that will reach the UK roads in the coming months and years. With the ever impressive Festival of Speed flying past with superstars, Hollywood stars and plenty of petrol-fueled cars taking up the weekend, now is the time to look to the coming months at Goodwood with an equally impressive line-up yet to come.

Goodwood Revival Now in its 18th year, the Goodwood Revival is a lively celebration of vintage fashion and culture, with a sell-out crowd of nearly 150,000 taking the opportunity to dress up in fashions from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s each September. Held this year between 9-11 September at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, the only motorsport venue in the world to remain preserved in its original form, the Revival attracts visitors, racers and celebrities from all over the world. Nowhere else can you step back in time and find yourself immersed in the golden era. Mingle with starlets in red lipstick and nail varnish, crowned in victory rolls, and Twiggy aficionados, all miniskirts and eyeliner. There will even been a highly anticipated Best Dressed Competition held on each day of the Revival, where judges award prizes to the most glamorous and authentic outfits. Other highlights of the 2016 Revival will be a celebration of 70 years of the bikini, made famous by such icons as Brigitte Bardot, Raquel Welch and of course Ursula Andress in Dr No. Fashion fans can find vintage gems on the Revival High Street, learn to jive with a glass of Veuve Clicquot in hand on the Richmond Lawn, or be entertained until late Over the Road at the funfair.

Qatar Goodwood Festival Also taking place at Goodwood, in July is the Qatar Goodwood Festival – popularly known as Glorious Goodwood – the sporting and social highlight of the flat-racing season. Traditionally taking place at the end of July, here the finest thoroughbreds compete in some of the world’s most prestigious races across a thrilling five days. The Stewards’ Cup was first run in 1840, and it was here that Edward VII caused a sartorial stir by sporting a panama hat and lounge suit instead of traditional top hat and tails. 2015 saw a new association with Qatar, whose sponsorship will ensure that Goodwood continues to attract champion jockeys, trainers and the finest equine athletes. FINANCE WITH MATT GOLD

Virtual Reality Takes Over Real Life Our financial insider reviews the global markets

Remember the movie The Matrix in 1999. Keanu Reeves was wired in to a pod that sends his mind to another, virtual world. Knowledge and martial arts could be downloaded to his brain and he saved the world in a spectacularly Hollywood way. This is now happening to our current generation. The new generation of games will make gamers put on a pair of goggles for hours. You will see your children screaming and jumping around the house wearing these goggles and you have no clue what they have been eating. The tiny screen could give the gamers the experience of sky diving or wrestling with a zombie in their own living room. This actually sounds worse than everyone looking at their mobile phones at the dining table on Christmas. Virtual Reality (“VR”) could take the people in your house further away from the real world. There is a more real version of VR. Augmented Reality in simple terms is to project a virtual world in a real world. So through the screen, one will see Spiderman hanging on his ceiling and Captain America sitting at his desk. There are some day to day commercial uses in AR. For example, one goes into a Porsche showroom and if you have the right App, you could point your phone at the latest white 911 and change the color to red and change the exhaust pipe, leather color inside, etc. Or you can point your phone at your living room, drag and drop different Ikea furnitures to get a feel of what the living room would look like with a new sofa and dining table. The giant multi-national companies of course want to make a living with this new technology. Sony Playstation and Microsoft

Xbox obviously would take this chance to secure their fan base with launching new VR games. It would be amazing to play Fifa and tackle Messi in virtual reality. Samsung has launched a pair of goggles for you to attach your latest Samsung handset to experience VR anytime anywhere. HTC launched an almost NASA laboratory like gadget called Vive that minimizes the lag between your hand turning and the display on the goggles. Apparently, it should make the users less dizzy. Facebook bought Oculus Rift for $2 billion in 2014 and the headset was launched at 700€ a piece in March 2016. Oculus already can take you to experience Game of Thrones with virtually real sword and shield. The combination of Facebook and virtual reality could be explosive. Friends will have virtual gatherings or could attend a distant birthday party without the travelling. Big money is being poured into VR. According to a report from Digi Capital, in 2015, $700 million was invested into Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. In 2016, $800 million investment went into Magic Leap, the hottest startup in the VR world based in Florida. Apparently, it will really turn you into an Iron Man, maybe not the flying part but the bit where you could throw a globe in the middle of your study room and it expands to the galaxy. If Magic Leap could turn an apartment in Elephant and Castle to a townhouse in Chelsea, the $800 million is very well spent. AR and VR revenue is forecast to hit $120 billion annually globally by 2020. VR uses a lot of computing power. This makes the future of cloud computing even brighter. Amazon and Google have mentioned their VR initiative here or there, but these two giants do not need to necessarily compete with their own gadgets. Google has launched a smartphone or two but it is happy to see Apple, Samsung and Huawei fighting for market share as long as there are more and more smartphones sold on the planet. More smartphones mean more searches and more revenue for Google who still dominate the search engine world. Amazon similarly enjoys more online shoppers who use smartphones to shop while they are waiting for their transport.

‘If Roger Dubuis wants to continue to be bold, to be different, to be perceived as a brand which has something to add... then investing in creativity is the prime target.’

JEAN-MARC PONTROUÉ

The Spectacular World of Skeletons Following the stand-out success at this years SIHH, the outspoken young-guns Roger Dubuis set their sights on Harrods

Among the 700 watch brands which exist in Switzerland today, Roger Dubuis is already part of the top 50 after just 20 years in the making. Jean-Marc Pontroué, who has been CEO at the Manufacture for just under five years is on hand to help us understand why. ‘I believe that the historical brand values from 1995 right up to today have been very much in the daring and ‘why not’ approach - we have done it our own way. We have been one of the brand’s which has broken a couple of codes when we entered the market by having a very strong style associated to the very strong mechanical content of our complications. That has put Roger Dubuis on the map in the watch making community and that is especially true with the skeleton models. If you want to exist in this market you need to be identified to one strong idea and Roger Dubuis after a couple of years in that industry came with a very graphic and very geometrical approach of skeletonised contemporary complications. The skeletonised models were no longer associated so much to traditional watch making as it has been for centuries.’ The introduction of the skeleton models introduced a new, striking ideal aimed at a very conservative target group of contemporary, edgy clientele. Over the past ten years, Roger Dubuis have been a leader in skeleton complications and a leader in tourbillon. These two pillars have helped the brand to be associated with the values of successful modern complications and as not only a strong, but recognised, credible operator in the segment, and now, they want the world to see. Launching a pop-up in Harrods is a bold step for a bold company, but Roger Dubuis are keen to build on their London success. ‘London is in Europe and the world, one of the major metropolitan cities where high end products have a strong appeal for high end customers. You have a lot of cities in the world which have a large population without necessarily having the right touristic flows and demographics which apply to our products. It happens in London, like Paris, like New York, like Tokyo. These have the profile of cities that already have a local demographic plus visitors for business or touristic reasons who have an appeal for this type of high end complications. That’s not only valid for watches, it’s valid for haute couture, high end cars, private banking and so on. Our business is very strong in a couple of key cities in the world and London is of course one of the top five cities for that business.’

Following the EU referendum result, the Swiss Manufacture is set to keep their focus and continue on the foundations they have already built. ‘We have only recently started to develop our business in London, we always had presence in London but our interest is to be a visible brand in selected locations where if you want to buy a high end complication in London at a certain point you will be facing, visibility-wise, with Roger Dubuis. How that happens in London is what we are working on and that’s why we are having this operation with Harrods. Harrods is for sure on the shopping list of every high end individual/tourist willing to buy high end products in London.’ Despite fears over the UK’s position in the world, one thing seems to be certain. ‘Harrods will remain the epitome of shopping in the world, not only the UK, it’s a reference for the world in terms of luxury shopping. Being in Harrods is a credibility factor for brand development whatever your business is.’ But how can a brand stand out from the crowd? If there is one company that knows a thing or two about standing out, it is Roger Dubuis. ‘In an environment of high competition - when you enter Harrods you are bombarded with lots of messages from various brands - how can you stand out? How can a brand like Roger Dubuis be more outspoken? On the brand profile we love this type of staging, we did it at SIHH. Our intention is to repeat in this high traffic location like Harrods, what we did, what impact we had last January at the SIHH in Geneva. You have about 12,000 visitors in five days at the SIHH. I don’t think I’d be lying to you if I tell you that everybody remembers Roger Dubuis that they saw at SIHH. When you go to these fairs, you are bombarded in the same way by hundreds of new products, new brands. So we want to repeat these success stories in Harrods. For all the good reasons of it being a fantastic city and fantastic location to really outperform the results of the store during these months of presence. New products will be shown, it will be a follow up of what has been seen at SIHH where we had a couple of new products which will be demonstrated. We will also have the key concepts of the brand in its boldness in both men and woman. New materials and world premieres will be unveiled at this occasion at Harrods. We want people to stay - the biggest challenge we have in a department store and I assume for all brands the same, is not only to let them see something which is spectacular, we have to make sure if you want to appreciate and understand a new concept of a new brand you have to spend a bit of time.

INTERVIEW

Visitors will have the opportunity to not only enjoy the exhibition of products on offer, but also the brands expertise assisting customers to enter into the movement of the watch whilst in Harrods. And of course, Roger Dubuis are keen to show off their incredible pieces to existing and potential customers alike. ‘The profile of people which come into Harrods is split between people who already know our brand and a couple of people who will be newly impacted by our brand either local or tourist. Very often when you are in a vacation mood you are more open because you have more time to be exposed to new ideas, to new concepts. The fact we are striking is of course a very strong element to say we don’t look like the others and while you can find something produced worldwide, we have only two hundred doors in our distribution network in the world, we are one of the most exclusive brands by not being over exposed in terms of brand presence. We propose to this worldwide clientele the opportunity to experiment the spirit of our manufacture, the spirit of our en ve based manufacture in this location (Harrods . Our interest is how to make sure to associate as many customers to our brand profile for the limited time that they can have browsing in the store.’ Many high end individuals visiting Harrods will already be aware of the brand, but for those who are new to this exciting company are in for an even bigger treat and it’s all thanks to the skeleton. ‘Our skeleton movement has a very strong duplicity, you find in the watch what we call a star skeleton as the brands signature on all of our skeleton movements. Many brands don’t have such a strong brand architectural approach in their skeleton movements. Roger Dubuis has been one of the very first brands to have this very striking, strongly identified architectural movement, as soon as you see it you know it is a Roger Dubuis. We sell engines, Roger Dubuis is an engineer. We manufacture our own calibres and calibres to watches are what engines are to

a car. A lot of brands do highlight mainly their design, at Roger Dubuis our designs are also our engine. That’s why we are unveiling it as much as possible, we don’t close it. With the dial, with back of the watch, everything is open. When you buy a Roger Dubuis, the price you pay is of course for the material which can be titanium, gold, or whatever, but it’s also a lot because of the engine, because of the technicality of the engines that we have which are all with a en ve feel so you pay for that. Due to the spectacular appearance of these movements we have decided to open as much as possible the beauty of these calibres. The next stage of the pop up store in Harrods is how you can integrate the world of Roger Dubuis with its complexity, because it’s not an easy world to enter, and how you can enter this complex world in a very instant, graphic, spectacular way and that’s what we want to repeat, what has happened at the SIHH.’ Materials have become big business in the watch industry and none more so than at Roger Dubuis. ‘We launched the silicon case and movement in 2013 at the SIHH and we have continually developed new materials, association of materials and I promise you that next year we will have again new materials present at the SIHH. New materials are part of our game that’s why we don’t spend too much time to look after what’s happening in the watch industry we are more interested in what’s happening in the high end car, high end yachting, super jets and medical industries to see what’s happening as we are sharing some of the same constraints and targets.’ But the development can surely only go so far? ‘We have enough ideas for the next 1000 SIHH - I exaggerate a little bit but not too much. Our biggest issue at Roger Dubuis is how you can edit the number of ideas, how you can streamline them, the creativity. We are over-investing in the research and development and creativity. If Roger Dubuis wants to continue to be bold, to be different, to be perceived as a brand which has something to

JEAN-MARC PONTROUÉ add, to provide, to give, to inject added value in the business, then investing in creativity is the prime target. We have come with world premieres at each SIHH over the past four years now. I can tell you at the coming next SIHH 2017 we will be bringing not one but three world premieres, which will be new in terms of movement and materials. That is the beauty of our brand to have the chance to get resources which can be invested in identifying new materials which are lighter, more performant, more resistant, and mechanical content, movement and calibres which are the same, spectacular which can justify the presence of our brand in that segment which is highly creative. Roger Dubuis is doing about half of its business with the limited editions programme, so what we unveil in Harrods is a sequence of our life. Representing all the Roger Dubuis values, having a couple of limited editions, very spectacular, we will have the knights of the round table which is a concept limited to just 28 pieces in the world; we will have some spectacular materials for ladies and men. The beauty of the pop up store is how to bring a summary, a real sense of the Roger Dubuis world for a limited time, a limited space but in one of the greatest shopping, premium areas in the world.’ This is the pinnacle of watch manufacture and worthy of space in anyones collection, but it’s not just a case of buying a watch when you look at a brand like Roger Dubuis, the depth of this company only becomes apparent when you start talking about the rarities programme. ‘We have a programme, which has a tailored made department in our manufacture in en ve and here we can spend time with any of our customers to see what type of personalisation they want to have on their watch. The beauty of our manufacture is that each watch is 100 integrated so we can do it very quick. We are not one of these brands that ask for years to develop something. The type of personalisation we can have for example by having your own functional initials as part of the skeleton movement, it’s very unique in the watch industry. We are the only brand to do that. It’s personal settings, personal engraving, special straps, we have a couple million different variations of personalisation that we can associate to your watch. We already have a lot of UK based customers who have used our tailor-made programme. Rolls Royce produce 100 of their cars tailormade, some of our watches have similar prices to Rolls Royce, so we don’t see why you can have your Rolls Royce personalised but not your watch. That’s why we believe that our brand, especially located in Harrods is targeting the right type of clientele. We’ll offer this type of service during our presence in Harrods.’ Targeting such a high end customer base has its benefits, but Roger Dubuis’ growth has been the result of innovative product

development and despite having plenty of ideas hidden away in Switzerland, can the success possibly continue on the same track for much longer. ‘I can’t give you any numbers but what I can tell you is that Roger Dubuis is still in the phase of development, our development will continue by being very creative; very spectacular in prime locations - like the one in Harrods targeting the prime cities in the world - especially the top 30 cities where high end business can be achieved. We will open four new stores this year, one in Macau, one in Tokyo, one in Beijing and one in Shanghai. We have opened New York six months ago, so our distribution network is continuing to be developed in depth. We are closing other stores because we are aiming to concentrate our visibility and our strength in the metropolitan, influential cities. Our number one boutique in the world is in en ve, we have opened New York we are also in Moscow. A large part of our sale is in Europe, but we have the opportunity to be a brand which appeals to local North Americans in North America, to local Middle Eastern individuals in the Middle East, to South Americans in South America. We have local clientele, if you are in Harrods it is also to target a uent British customers, not only the touristic kind.’

KEN KESSLER

Cars and Watches Ken Kessler

Some years ago, I started a list of cars-and-watches for my own amusement, consisting solely of models like Breitling’s Bentley range or the Ferrari watches made by Cartier, irard-Perregaux and Panerai - in other words, watches that had the car name on the dial. Nothing generic, like the Heuers named after racing circuits, or watches such as B.R.M.s that look like car parts, but actual cooperative ventures. I gave up on it two years ago, after it passed the 125-mark. And that was just the number of names involved, not the number of individual models. Why? Because every brand with an eye to 20-to-50-yearold males with a Clarkson-wannabee complex has a car watch contract. It grew unmanageable, with brands as below-the-radar as

Vostok, Ritmo Mundo and Locman qualifying for inclusion, and automobile makes as obscure, rare or long-out-of-production as Austin-Healey, Spyker and Diatto enjoying watches of their own. In the current market, such marriages range from the marketing intent of a sponsorship arrangement, e.g. nearly every F1 driver or team has a deal with a watchmaker, to non-car-brand-specific ventures such the support of Rolex, Chopard and TA Heuer for race series or car events like the oodwood extravaganzas. It permeates the entire watch culture a book was recently published about the car watch connection, and there are collectors who focus solely on car-watches, with themed auctions to serve them. If this is a sub-genre, then it’s huge rather than cult.

COLUMN

In terms of credibility and or longevity, TA Heuer beginning in the pre-TA era has the longest relationship with cars, despite automotive watches appearing as early as the 1 20s, with Mido’s watch for Bugatti. Jack Heuer was prescient enough to see that supporting the races, the teams and the drivers would create an image for the sports-oriented brand, which specialised in chronographs, a supremacy in motorsport that remains unchallenged. Many of the highly-collectible Heuer watches of the 1 0s have been reissued, including the Silverstone, while the Monaco - the world’s first square automatic chronograph remains forever linked with the image of Steve Mc ueen and the film, Le Mans. Rolex, meanwhile, secured a coup as the official sponsor and timekeeper for Formula One - the whole megillah. So, while other brands have paid fortunes to position their logos on cars, helmets, fireproof suits and anything else with a blank space, Rolex is seen in every single shot, every photo and from every angle. Schadenfreude has never had a greater justification. But Rolex is too cool to issue an “F1 Rolex , nor does it need to the Cosmograph Daytona is its most coveted model, and that is one watch race track connotation which is sacrosanct. Chopard, due in no small part to its CEO’s passion for vintage cars, has long sponsored the Mille Miglia, an annual re-enacting of the historic race. The company has issued both time-only watches and chronographs under the Mille Miglia banner, sporting models that have embraced everything automotive from rubber straps that look like period tyre treads, to dials in the national racing colours. Dominant in the car watch genre, however, are those that connect a manufacturer or individual car to a watch, most recently exemplified by Baume & Mercier’s rather tasty

chronographs commemorating the Shelby Cobra. These were produced in conjunction with the Shelby organisation, and a nice touch is the support of the venture by one of the surviving drivers who piloted Cobras 50 years ago. Without question, the most successful car watch marriage is Breitling for Bentley, which achieved the almost-unimaginable trick of selling its watches to people who don’t actually own the cars in question. One presumes that wearing, say, a Ferrari watch while not owning an actual Maranello masterpiece might seem rather sad, but the watches produced almost always outnumber the cars, so enthusiasts for the vehicles take up the slack. Breitling’s creations have developed their own following, by virtue of distinctive looks with wonderful details recalling the eponymous vehicles.

KEN KESSLER

Parmigiani, on the other hand, ensured that its watches for Bugatti would only be accessible to owners of Bugattis by virtue of price. The Bugatti watches are radical examples of true haute horlogerie, while the six-figure price tags might frighten everyone except those paying seven figures for Veyrons and Chirons. It seems as if everyone’s in on the game. Richard Mille is committed to both an F1 team and a Formula E team, has long supported a few drivers and makes what are among the most “automotive-looking watches on the market. Hublot is the latest in a long line of companies that have made watches for Ferrari, Blancpain sponsors a Lamborghini-only race series, IWC produces watches that celebrate its sponsorship of AM Mercedes in F1, Bremont makes watches inspired by vintage Jaguar dials, Manometro has a model with Alfa-Romeo at its heart because the founder collects TAs, ad infinitum. And why such synergy between watches and cars? Yes, it’s a “guy thing but wristwatches were born almost concurrently with the arrival of the automobile. The former has been timing the latter for around a century. Both represent mechanical precision and excellence. I suppose it’s about as obvious a match as gin-and-tonic.

For those that have followed our articles over the last year, it is clear we hold Jaeger LeCoultre in the highest regard. A true Maison in the world of horology; be it in supplying the early mechanical movements for Cartier to creating some of the most astounding horological marvels the world has ever seen, the one element that is intrinsic to their success is consumer awareness. Every brand must build their fan base, and despite the success of Richard Mille and reubel Forsey, there is no other brand that can offer a solid collection of “entry level models as well as genuine astronomical complications, in both price and function like JLC. With this in mind, their Master collection delivers everything from a simple hand wound calibre with date to an ultra thin tourbillon but all still in very classic aesthetics. That is why the new Master Calendar model proved such a surprise! The choice to use Meteorite is perhaps not that dramatic, rather where it has been chosen to be applied is a little unexpected. It

is perhaps the curse of success that the luxury environment has become its most transparent in recent years. The demand for innovation and an element of surprise is as essential as it has ever been but the rise of social media has robbed us of any sort of real anticipation. Now with a decline in actual sales coupled with over production; the industry as a whole is having to focus on real quality over quantity, as well as offering up the odd surprise Meteorite is in its definition something otherworldly, essentially a rock from space that managed not to burn up entirely when entering the Earth’s atmosphere. We have seen Jaeger LeCoultre use Lapis Lazuli before in their uantieme Pereptuelle Tourbillon Cylindirique model as pictured alongside stunning works of enamelled art in various Tourbillon models but to offer Meteorite dials on their fantastically classical Master Calendar model was definitely surprising. We have seen Meteorite being employed by Rolex in their Daytona series and naturally, Omega have incorporated it to great success in their speedmaster Moonwatch family. Both of these collections are typical sports models where the character of the dial and fun factor of the Meteorite enhanced the masculinity and ruggedness of the watches in question. The obvious choice for Jaeger LeCoultre to use this somewhat mythical material would have been in their Master Compressor collection as the Master Calendar is a refined model, ultimately a dress watch housing an useful complication. The watch carries an Annual Calendar, which is correct all year round but not perpetual in that the user will need to adjust for leap years. sing apertures for the month and day, the date is shown on the outside edge of the dial with an accurate moonphase display too. Offering these features in a mm case requires legibility, which in theory might not be balanced with the natural asymmetry and liveliness of a meteorite dial. In the flesh, however, is a totally different story. Every dial created for this collection is hewn from a single Meteorite registered in

New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF

Sweden. Some manipulation to the rock must occur to create a surface smooth enough for the hands to not be obstructed but it is clear the natural inclusions of the stone are left as natural as is possible. There is a slight shimmer to the actual Meteorite while the rough terrain of each dial creates a lovely light play and depth that changes with different environments. The steel variant uses a slightly lighter grey coloured part of the Meteorite while the Rose old version carries a darker finish. These colours work well with their respective models, the Rose old in particular offering a rich hue that matches its casing nicely. Overall, the slightly beaten surface is reminiscent of the Moon but only adds character and something different to a model that could have disappeared amongst the number of similar calendar models that now a ict the market. The choice of material is not new, nor is the complication but the combinations adds some daring to a line that could be considered quite mature. As we touched on above, our appreciation of Jaeger LeCoultre distills down to the fact it appears the Brand wants to engage a new audience and burgeoning collectors alongside the old guard. Something like this model with its quirky twist carries the ability to grab the attention where some of the other Master models do not. Furthermore, as is always the case with JLC, the price point for both models are set very reasonably for what is on

offer. An entirely in-house and accurate Annual Calendar from a historic house using a rare material for the dial carries inherent value but at ,100.00 for the Steel and 1 ,200.00 for the Rose old it is incredibly good value for money besides looking very cool. Please visit us in-store to discover these models and many more from the Jaeger LeCoultre family, I anticipate you will be pleasantly surprised.

FELLOWS AUCTIONEERS

Tool Time with Adrian Hailwood

drian has over ears e erience in the lu ur goods industr with names such as Mappin & Webb, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Breguet. He is a Director of Fellows Auctioneers with particular responsibility for the Watch e artment

Beefed up. The simplest and most enduring feature of a tool watch is simply to give it a more robust case. Thicker lugs and bezels and the use of steel rather than precious metal makes a watch much more resistant to impact. Some of the first watches to assume the shape that we recognise as a rugged tool watch were the military watches of WWII, given that many of the wrist watches of WWI were pocket-watch conversions with remarkably delicate wire lugs. It is interesting that the British military specifications of ATP and subsequent WWW consider issues such as accuracy, legibility, case construction and water resistance but not shock protection. Devices to protect the delicate balance staff had existed since 1 0 the commercial Incabloc system was launched in 1 0 but it was slow to be adopted as an industry standard. It may be that wristwatches, still a relatively unusual item for the average man in the street by 1 , were still seen as delicate instruments and protected as far as possible. The most enduring civilian iteration of the time-only tool watch has to be the Rolex Explorer, produced since the early 1 50s and still in the contemporary collection. Adopting and developing the water-resistant ‘Oyster’ case, this watch is the perfect example of form following function. Exploring the deep. Water resistance is a highly desirable trait in any tool watch and goes hand-in-hand with the development of a robust case. This is a more pressing concern (pardon the pun) if the watch is to function at depth. The aforementioned Rolex ‘Oyster’ case was the first commercial water resistant watch although Omega laid claim to the title of first ‘dive’ watch in 1 2 with their double-cased Marine watch, rated to 1 5m. A request from the Italian Navy in 1 5 led to the production of the first military dive watches by Panerai, powered by Rolex movements, but it was after WWII with the development of scuba diving as a sport

So it may seem obvious that a watch is a tool for telling the time, but in watch-collecting circles the term ‘Tool Watch’ is a little more specific. A tool watch has additional features that assist the wearer in a specific job or situation, over and above the telling of the time this might be for sporting and leisure pursuits, work or even military applications.

their Navitimer chronograph by adding a slide rule to the bezel to allow complex calculations to be made regarding speed, fuel use etc. Motorsport will be forever linked to the chronographs of Heuer and Rolex, and again the speed calculating function is self-evident. It is easy to forget that chronographs were useful to doctors, scientists, engineers, film makers and a whole swathe of administrators involved in post-war time-and-motion studies, and of course astronauts. To this we have to remember the military uses, not just for pilots but for artillery and a host of others. To maintain proper tool watch credentials we are looking for unadorned pieces that are all about legibility and ease of use, whatever the specifics of the role. Pilots were lucky, not only did they get chronographs they also got another useful tool, the MT. The 1 50s saw cooperation between Rolex and Pan Am to develop a watch for their long haul pilots that could show multiple time zones. The Rolex MT Master was the result and it became a useful tool not only for the pilots but for those sitting a few seats back too.

and means of exploration that the dive watch really took off. The first dive watch to look like the modern concept, complete with rotating bezel, was the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms produced in 1 5 and worn by Jacques Cousteau. This was followed in 1 5 by the Rolex Submariner and in subsequent years other brands followed suit. As technology allowed divers to go deeper, their watches had to go with them - a vital lifeline when planning decompression and safe ascents. This lead to brands such as Omega and Rolex to work with commercial dive companies to test and develop their products leading to addition features such as helium escape valves. Hard to resist. If we are talking about resistance, one lesser known threat to a watch’s functioning is magnetism. Until the recent development of non-magnetic balance springs, watches were susceptible to strong magnetic fields being either made to run fast or stopped altogether as the coils of the spring stuck together. Scientists and engineers have suffered this problem for years meaning that they have their own tool watch - the antimagnetic watch. Rolex had the Milgauss and Omega the Railmaster but that lack of need combined with the ‘un-sexiness’ of the occupation meant that these watches did not sell well. Ironically, as technology has shrunk and the magnetic fields reduced, they have got up close and personal in our phones, laptops etc. This long neglected feature has made something of a comeback in recent times. Stopping time. Adding a complication to a tool watch brings us to chronographs, possibly the most underused feature on a modern timepiece. Originally a very expensive addition, these were bought by those who needed them, but without easily available accurate multifunction timepieces, the list of those who could find use for a chronograph was very long. We naturally think of pilots wearing chronographs and Breitling helpfully upgraded the tool status of

Tools today. Even a cursory glance at watch auction results will show that vintage tool watches perform extraordinarily well at auction and are the most popular styles at retail, so what is the enduring appeal? Digital watches do so much more with greater accuracy and robustness while smart phones and smart watches provide apps galore. The first reason is the design the simplicity of use that a tool watch requires pares away anything superfluous resulting in an enduring style that is beyond fashion. The second is the association of the tool watch with a history of endeavour, while modern dive watches may spend their lives at a desk and chronograph pushers time nothing more than a boiled egg, these watches are reminders of a more active past when such a timekeeper was a friend, companion and possibly a life-saver.

£1.4 million Blancpain ‘A stunning adornment for an exceptional creation’

WATCHES The innovative and exclusive Blancpain “baguette setting is to jewellery what the tourbillon is to watchmaking. Intricate, complex and crafted by the most expert artisans, this unprecedented gem-setting technique is making a noteworthy entrance onto the watchmaking stage in conjunction with Blancpain Calibre 25A, a self-winding tourbillon movement with a 7-day power reserve. A ‘summit meeting’ between twin peaks of Haute Horlogerie and Haute Joaillerie. Since 1 5, Blancpain has presented a number of world firsts. New to the and available at Blancpain, Bond Street, the original and exclusive “baguette setting adorning the Tourbillon Diamonds is entirely in line with this philosophy of constant innovation. Lit up 0 glittering diamonds totaling 5 carats, this extraordinary model has been treated to cutting-edge techniques used to clothe it in the glory of a full-set dial, bezel, case middle, lugs and bracelet. Creating a stunning visual effect, the unstructured setting of the baguette-cut diamonds is incredibly complex in terms of both the arrangement and the specific size of each stone. The classic round shape of the watch increases the difficulty, since each diamond is precisely adjusted to fit smoothly within the whole. The variable dimensions and positioning of the dial enhance the splendour of the multiple facets with their stunningly luminous sparkling reflections. The inner is no less impressive too, the Tourbillon Diamonds houses Blancpain Calibre 25A, a mechanical self-winding movement with a 7-day power reserve and made up of 2 parts. As one would expect from an Haute Horlogerie model, the bevelling, C tes de en ve decoration and circular graining are all performed by hand by skilled and experienced artisans. The 0 mmdiameter white gold case of the Tourbillon Diamonds is water-resistant to 100 metres and its sapphire crystal allows you to admire the hand finishing of all the parts and to follow the gentle swaying motion of the hand-chased platinum oscillating weight. The articulated white gold bracelet, full-set with diamonds totalling 2 carats, reflects the elegance and prestige of the diamonds that appear to be literally jumping out of the dial.

Royal Diamond Established in 1 and making them the world’s oldest diamond company, Backes Strauss has recently unveiled the long-awaited Royal Berkeley Emperor Tourbillon. Joining the collection of Emperor timepieces within the company’s Royal series, the diamond encrusted case has been inspired by London’s Berkeley Square, a constant reminder of the quintessentially British heritage of Backes Strauss and also a celebration of nature. Each of the 1,0 0 diamonds on the piece, a miracle of nature in themselves, has undergone hours of rigorous selection and been individually polished in a bespoke cut that mirrors the case in the form of Berkeley Square. For this extremely special timepiece, a hand-winding skeleton tourbillon movement has been handcrafted to demonstrate the precise and meticulous work of the master of complication, Franck Muller. This diamond masterpiece, both unique and timeless is the only one of its kind not only do we have a wristwatch showcasing the extreme beauty conceived when a Franck Muller complication meets with Backes Strauss diamonds, but it also pays homage to the architectural particularity of London reinterpreting Berkeley Square into a Royal Emperor’s arena of extraordinary diamonds.

Nutrition - We can no longer avoid the fact that meat and livestock farming is unsustainable given the amount of land, water and food being used to produce it and the greenhouse gases that result, causing damage to our environment. Insect farms have taken off all over the and given the existing research which suggests many edible insect species have similar protein levels to traditional meats, I can’t imagine it will be long before we are exchanging our shot of spirulina for our packet of crispy crickets See, for example www. eatgrub.co.uk . Training - Whilst we will undoubtedly see an increase of ‘fast fix’ workouts like electro-muscle stimulation which I can imagine the suits becoming even more wearable and lightweight and virtual workouts Microsoft’s Hololens may allow your personal trainer to be in the room with you, rather than just on an app or a YouTube channel , I wouldn’t be surprised if we also saw a shift in slowing down, with whole workouts focused on mobility and stretching and groups going out for long walks rather than short HIIT type programs.

As fitness becomes more and more of a focus in our lives, it is unsurprising that entrepreneurs and large corporates want to get involved in the action. With it being both my passion and my job, I am always interested to see what lies ahead and where the industry may go next just in case everyone really does want to learn ballet and I need to start practising those pli s Wearable Technology - Tracking and collecting data on our heartrate, step count, calorie intake and sleeping patterns is something the first generation of wearable technology watches have allowed us to do and which, we are definitely becoming increasingly obsessed with . This Autumn, Apple brings out the Apple Watch 2 which, rumour has it, will have improved battery life and a better set of sensors. iven the brand affinity a huge number of consumers have with Apple, this will undoubtedly fly off the shelves. More exciting than this, however, is the huge leaps and bounds that have been made in making these gadgets fashionable. For both sexes, designers have focused on making the smartwatches look stylish, sophisticated and less conspicuous Mondaine Helvetica 1 and Huawei Watch are two of my personal favourites. For women, I can certainly see Olio Model One smartwatches and Tory Burch’s collaboration with Fitbit making a splash. Sleep - When I talk to my increasingly busy clients, they are now not only concentrating on a balanced diet and regular exercise to keep their stress levels low, but more determined than ever to have a restful night’s sleep. There are hotels and country retreats aplenty across the and more than enough within a few hours from London, but there are only a select number that offer something more than the ordinary. If you are looking to escape for the weekend or simply need a week away from the weight of London on your shoulders then there is nowhere better than the secluded, warm and welcoming New Forest hotel The Pig. Promoting itself as a restaurant with rooms, The Pig has taken their philosophy and delivered it in the most charming way. The focus is not put on the spectacular period building which accommodates a number of guest rooms, the restaurant, unique bar and reception areas, instead it is placed on the fantastic walled kitchen garden which is open for all to enjoy. Producing almost everything on the menu - besides select produce brought in from no more than 25 miles away or ingredients collected during foraging trips in the local area - the garden is the key to this hotel’s success. The kitchen is overseen by Chef James olding and Head Chef Dan over, but their two key lieutenants don’t come in sous chef

form, rather a forager and kitchen gardener. The menu depends wholly on what is available that day, with no time for negotiation. As a result, you get to enjoy something special every time you dine in the enchanting conservatory restaurant that has a slight air of Harry Potter about it. The menu delivers uncomplicated and simple British garden food, true to the micro seasons and influenced by the forest and coast, with the emphasis squarely on fresh, clean flavours. If that’s not enough, they also host a number of animals from, of course, pigs to chickens and quail along with their very own smokehouse. This does of course mean that you will find yourself enjoying the freshest of eggs in the morning alongside some incredible pork based treats such as bacon, sausages and black pudding. Alternatively, you can indulge in the plethora of other freshly baked goods on offer including breads and pastries. Food is undoubtedly at the heart of The Pig and it has seen so much success that there are now four more locations across the

South-West of England, however it is not all that The Pig in the forest has to offer. Previously offering a range of rooms either in the main building or the stable yard, they now have even more secluded lodges to enjoy. Located away from the house, gardens and stable rooms, the new lodges offer an extra level of privacy to complete the forest escape. There are four options to choose from which includes ‘Berts Box’ featuring master bedroom, shower room and kitchen-diner-living area with log burner ‘Pig House’ which features a master bedroom with en-suite monsoon shower and freestanding bath. Piglets room with bunk bed and monsoon shower, multipurpose kitchenette and dining-living area with log burner ‘Pig Lodge’ with a similar offering to ‘Pig House’ replacing the piglet room with a double for additional adult space and last but by no means least ‘Forest Cabin’, a rustic romantic hideaway with a view, four poster en-suite with monsoon shower room and terrific views deep into the forest from free standing bath in the room. ndoubtedly the room of choice to fully escape, separated

from all other rooms on the property. Both Pig House and Pig Lodge can of course accommodate four people if necessary, but they also provide an excellent space for two, delivering an apartment sized room in which to truly unwind away from, well, everything. What makes this place special is that you step out of your front door and immediately feel like you are a part of something. It’s not that you instantly come across other people, nor that you feel you have to do anything, it is a surreal understanding that you are engaging in the most basic of processes that is now otherwise missing in modern society. You can go and spend over the odds at Whole Foods and feel like you are doing right in the world, but you are still separated from the process by such a vast chasm. Here, you can indulge in self-sufficiency and ecological prowess whilst enjoying the same level of service, quality and experience you would expect from establishments placed much higher in the order. This truly is an escape from the norm, you can lose yourself

in the peaceful forest and engage in the subtle bustle that the intriguing restaurant invokes, all the while enjoying your own private lodge. The whole ethos of The Pig carries through the air bringing a homely, welcoming appeal which is mirrored at every turn even down to the impressive selection of home infused spirits available in the bar. You won’t find many self sustaining establishments offering the same level of quality you will find here and if you enjoy gastronomy, you certainly won’t find anywhere quite like the garden to table freshness. The fantastic new additions to The Pig bring with them the opportunity to delve even deeper into the forest and complete the country escape you are looking for. And the beauty is that you can simply wander to the main house to enjoy some more company and the warm welcome at the bar. A perfect start to the evening that will only get better with the anticipation of what you will find on the menu. Once you have had your fill, you can retire back to your secret hideaway and warm yourself in front of the log fire.

May Fair Kitchen Having launched in May, the new May Fair Kitchen in the May Fair Hotel is beautifully light with gold accents and differing shades of light and dark marble tables. Offering an array of Spanish and Italian style sharing plates the restaurant is perfect for a catch up meal with friends as well as business colleagues. To be enjoyed alongside a wide selection of wines, spirits and cocktails, the large and varied menu is wonderfully executed and you would be hard pushed to not find something you love. This is the latest reinvention for the secluded restaurant spot nestled in the heart of Mayfair and offers the perfect menu for the summer months. Highlights include, slow roasted padron peppers with Maldon salt thickly cut Italian antipasti selection with sun blushed tomato and olives; creamy Lobster risotto with cherry tomato and seared

scallop Chicken and chorizo sliders with avocado and chilli mayonnaise and Mascarpone and speck pizza. A must-have has to be the Chilli panko tiger prawns with jalapeno emulsion. The tiger prawns are large and crisp, with a great kick to them, so good you’ll want to order more! Plates start at .00 with the most expensive at 22.00 for remolata crusted lamb cutlets and Chilean sea bass with padron shiso salsa. If you work to around three dishes per person, you should find that you are sufficiently satisfied, but the beauty of this new menu offering is that you can always ask for more if you need it. Desserts come in the form of Deconstructed tiramisu served with Disaronno espresso Sugar coated doughnuts served with warm Grand Marnier or Rococo chocolate elixir; or for something a little lighter Amalfi lemon sorbet.

Zoran’s Mixology Masterclass

with Zoran Peric

Zoran Peric is a cocktails and spirits expert with a background in launching and managing some of London’s top bars such as the Soho Hotel. He has also worked with some of the country’s leading drinks brands, working with them to develop their brand and drinks conce ts

The summer sun is now shining over London’s iconic landmarks hopefully , and with the summer season upon us, Londoners are embracing all that this incredible city has to offer. As a hub of international influences, which boasts awardwinning cocktail bars and mixologists, I thought it only appropriate to share some innovative and delicious cocktail recipes, all of which are perfect to enjoy in these valuable summer months. During these times it is easy to order your old reliable, such as the in Tonic, Vodka Soda, Pimms, Aperol Spritz or an ice cold beer, and why not? They hit the spot and really do help quench the thirst. But what better time, to look back at old, classic and even iconic cocktails, and put a summer twist on them to create new and inspired cocktails for the long warmer days. Over the past few years we have seen a lot of innovation taking place, especially in whiskies, tequilas and liqueurs people have been moving slowly away from sweet tastes to more complex and nuanced flavours. As we all become more adventurous with what we order, you may have noticed that bars have expanded and experimented more with their cocktail lists, with new spicy, herbal and bitter drinks flying off the menu. With this shift, traditional summer go-to drinks such as the cold beer are no longer dominating gardens and rooftops as much as they once did. Instead we are seeing the revival of the old classics such as the Tom Collins, a favourite of mine, but let’s not forget that integral twist; by using a liqueur, the serve becomes a light, refreshing and tasty drink that you can quickly make at home. se 1-part Drambuie, a lemon, mint

leaves and 2 parts Soda, cut a lemon into wedges, then squeeze and drop half the lemon into a highball glass. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir. Lastly, garnish with a mint sprig to really give it that “wow” factor. Drambuie has, over the years, focused on reinventing its signature serves for ever evolving palate, accommodating for all preferences so if a cocktail like the Tom Collins is not your tipple of choice, perhaps try the Drambuie Fresco, made with 1-part Drambuie, 1-part Pink rapefruit Juice, and top with Soda. Add Drambuie and grapefruit juice to an ice-filled glass and stir. Top with soda and garnish with a slice of grapefruit and a mint spring. This is a stunningly simple drink with a deliciously complex flavour. It is a refreshing spritz-like cocktail that is perfect to make for a large group of friends. It is all about the fresh tasting cocktails during these months and no one does this better than the Mexican restaurants and bars. London has recently seen a Mexican boom, with a plethora of Mexican restaurants such as DF/Mexico and Cielo Blanco, leading the charge. The capital cannot get enough of the herbaceous undertones that this region brings to its dishes and cocktails. To try a delicious Mexican inspired cocktail, I would highly recommend ordering the Hacienda Cooler at erman Gymnasium, made with basil syrup, lemon juice and a tequila of your choice, which is then topped with kaffir leaves, lastly add lemograss and homemade soda, with green apple and lime foam to finish. Try something different and inspire those around you to be creative with what they order this summer!

HARRODS WINE

The Oenophilist

with Edward Gerard, Wine Buyer for Harrods

dward erard started his career c cling cases o fine wine round the SW1 and SW3 postcodes. Some 13 years later after a stint in the USA, and having extensively traveled and tasted his way around the wine world he finds himsel with the enviable ob o selecting the vast range available in the Wine Rooms at Harrods.

When I joined the wine trade nearly 1 years ago ros was a category that was not very popular, it was enjoyed whilst on holidays and on the odd occasion when the British summer prevailed. Nowadays however, we can find great rose from across the world in nearly every wine shop in the country and a younger generation of winemakers are creating wines that they love to drink; wines with style and balance as well as substance, that can be enjoyed both as a summer aperitif and a drink to enhance a meal. The original trail blazer in this field was the Cotes de Provence house of Domaines OTT who, with their iconic bottle, made both wine connoisseurs and trend setter’s alike swoon over the beautiful pale pink, elegant and balanced wines that they created. Today this icon actually makes three Ros ’s but my top pick from The Wine Room at Harrods comes from their Clos Mirielle estate, right on the sea front in the Cotes de Provence. In 2015 they made a wine of true finesse and elegance, that tantalizes the taste buds with notes of ripe strawberries and pears and holds your attention with a round and balanced mouthfeel and delicate but long finish. A newer contender to the title is Chateau d’Esclans, whose newest release, the 2015 Rock Angel is taking the market by storm, branding aside this is a great wine which is richer in style than OTT’s Clos Mirielle but

still true to its Provence DNA, it has lovely depth of red fruit with hints of herbs and minerality too all encased in a lovely textured Burgundian like mouthfeel and at 25. 5 it might be a little more than your average rose but that is because this is a big step above the norm. Stepping away from France and Provence my two go to ros wines this summer are the wonderfully clean and vibrant South African Delaire raff Ros . This ros is made from the Cabernet Franc grape and has the lovely sweet cassis notes intermixed with ripe strawberries and a hint of dark cherries. It is a seriously good wine that will work well with any summer barbeques or picnics. And lastly but by no means least is the English Nannettes Ros , yes you read that right, the English have made a seriously delicious ros wine. At the Hush Heath estate in the Kent countryside they have produced a rather special still ros wine that we can be proud of. It’s lighter that the other three in this article but that is no bad thing, with an elegant nose of fresh English strawberries and raspberries with a lively but balanced acidity and a hint of garden herbs adding a touch of complexity to the palate. I can’t say that every year we will be able to make a good rose on these shores but in 2015 the team at Hush Heath have done just that and it’s worth every penny of the 1 . 5 that it costs.

Dirty Bones Carnaby Having opened their second site last September after the success of their first restaurant in ensington, American comfort food restaurant Dirty Bones is the perfect place for a spot of ultraindulgent brunch. Located on the top floor of Carnaby’s vibrant ingly Court, Dirty Bones Carnaby is relatively small, seating 5 in a great quirky environment featuring neon lights, retro pinball machine tables and old-school lampshades. Ideal for those looking for something a little heavier than your standard ‘Eggs Florentine Avocado on Toast’ brunch fare, the menu offers hearty dishes with a twist. Menu highlights include the restaurant’s take on Eggs Benedict in the form of the Benedict Burger oz house burger, topped with poached egg and black treacle bacon, smothered in Dirty Bones hollandaise sauce maplesyrup soaked Chicken and Wa es and the ultimate hangover brunch dish – the Mac Daddy, mac and cheese covered burger. For veggies the green cheese toastie with cheddar, taleggio and avocado on sourdough, is a good choice. Sides include the must-try breakfast fries with smoky ketchup and topped with two fried eggs and the mac and cheese. With dishes between and 10.50, and sides at each there’s no excuse not to try it out. Those looking to really indulge can opt for the bottomless 1 Prosecco offering, and when we went staff kept everyone well topped up for the allocated two-hour slot. Alternatively, there is a wide range of innovative cocktails, beer and soft drinks. The bottomless brunch offer is available Sat - Sun 11am 5pm Dirty Bones, Top Floor, Kingly Court, Carnaby Street, London W1B 5PW 020 7920 6434 | dirty-bones.com

Señor Ceviche

Bright and colourful, Senor Ceviche feels like a little gem you will want to keep all to yourself. Located in ingly Court, this lively Peruvian restaurant and cocktail bar works on a sharing plate basis and has been inspired by travels around Peru. Showcasing the diverse flavours and cooking, the menu is made up of fantastic street food options, spicy barbecue and traditionally fresh ceviches. They recommend to have three dishes per person, or more if you are hungry. Must-tries from us include, the moreish uinoa and Cheddar croquettas with aji rocotto and pineapple salsa Chicharonne Sanguchitos, crispy pork belly buns with Peruvian hot sauce, sweet potato puree, tarragon mayo and salsa criolla and the Frijoles Negros, black beans, smoked bacon, burnt aubergine, aiji panca, pineapple and sour cream. You can’t go wrong with the Sweet Potato fries, and there is also an array super healthy salads and barbecued meats. A highlight has to be the fresh ceviches though, The Spaniard has a wonderfully hot sweet and sour kick made up of Sea Bream and King Prawn ceviche with tomato and aiji rocotto tiger’s milk, red onion, coriander, plantain and crispy chorizo. It’s also worth noting that many of the dishes are gluten free and there are also a number of vegetarian dishes too.

Wash it all down with one of the bar’s fantastic cocktails, most made with Pisco, a clear Peruvian brandy distilled from grapes. We recommend Peruvian Pasion Machu Pisco, Bombay Sapphire in, Passoa, cranberry, lime juice and egg white and Yapa Sandia - Papaya and mango infused Macchu Pisco, lime juice and Watermelon. And finally finish with a Tarta de ueso passion fruit and white chocolate cheesecake with chicha morada syrup. Dishes start at just .00 and there is also a lunch offer with one plate, side and soft drink for 10, Mon -Thurs 12-5pm. Señor Ceviche, Kingly Court, London W1B 5PW 020 7842 8540 | senor-ceviche.com

your The Pinnacle of Driving in Luxury Bentley update the already impressive Mulsanne with some serious pulling power and Chelsea Cars offer up an old-school tourer in the shape of a Bugatti Type 35 recreation from Teal.

New Bentley Mulsanne Speed | 1977 Teal Type 35 Tourer

BENTLEY MULSANNE SPEED

BIG Just Became Better

YOUR DRIVE

BENTLEY MULSANNE SPEED

Many people would look at a car like the Bentley Mulsanne with preconceived ideas that they are too big, offering nothing for the driver in you. However, the reality is something altogether different. ndeniably large on roads, this is by no means a car to be taken lightly if you are planning on driving it, but it is one that offers an incredible amount of unexpected composure and driveability considering its size. Although largely utilised as a luxury chauffeur car by many owners, this cars versatility makes it just as enjoyable in the front seat as it does the back. Even more so with the latest update from the impressive British marque. Visually it is clear to see that Bentley are not simply settling for substance, they have brought style to the fore with a wide, imposing front grille which offers a guide for two distinct body lines rolling over the front of the car and all the way to the back. The new Mulsanne’s presence on the road is, well, obvious, but they have not shied away from that, they have embraced it and provided the car with everything they can to ensure that those people

noticing are impressed. The new side-vent feature is one such example of their attention to detail. The glistening flying ‘B’ catches the light and sends your eyes along the side of the car. Although small, details like this have been cleverly used to mask the size of this car, without them, it’s mass would become far more apparent. The Mulsanne maintains the previous juxtaposition of square front and rounded rear, but the former has been softened whilst still delivering sufficient notes of aggression and power. Subtle yet sharp lines are used across the front of the car highlighting the lights and corners, yet again providing a cue for your eyes to continue their gaze along the body. Bentley have designed this car considering many different aspects, from comfort to ride and clearly appearance and have managed to create a machine that although large, appears sleek and athletic on the road. One feature which helps it the window to metal ratio. Delivering shallow windows atop the large body creates the illusion of slenderness, something used on coupe’s to increase ‘sportiness’.

72

YOUR DRIVE

This does of course serve another purpose, not simply cosmetic. If you reduce the volume of glass which is one of the heaviest materials used in car manufacture), you reduce the weight and more specifically the weights location. Lots of glass sitting on top of the body pulls the centre of gravity much higher than Bentley would like, they are making a drivers’ car after all. So the windows are narrowed lowering the centre of gravity whilst providing the added appeal of sportiness. The design process is a multi-faceted affair, taking note of every departments requirements. Although the industry has developed exponentially over the past decade, Bentley still hand craft each and every vehicle using materials that are not as easy to manipulate as the likes of carbon fibre used by McLaren for example, so their design process has the added complication of engineering limitation. A design can be created, but if the process of manufacturing is impossible to achieve then it is back to the drawing board. However, Bentley are not ones to shy away from the challenge, remember the relaunch of the Flying Spur a few years ago? They brought us the worlds largest single piece side panel which incorporated both the front and rear light clusters,

something that hadn’t been done before. And they did it by hand, using the same materials they had done previously. No carbon fibre in sight, just pure engineering magic. Needless to say then that if anyone has the skills to produce a car that delivers in every way including a design that makes a three tonne vehicle look sleek, it is Bentley. And it is not just in the aesthetic design where the impressive engineering delivers. The coupe-style appearance is almost a byproduct of the real engineering process which is aimed at one thing...making it superb to drive, and it is. Bentley were born from motor racing and that DNA remains, regardless of the size or style of vehicle they are producing. Every one of their models is designed and engineered to be a fantastic car to drive first and foremost and the new Mulsanne is no exception. The latest Mulsanne Speed is staggeringly good to drive with a comfortable yet decidedly surefooted ride and a powertrain that will blow your mind. There is a perfect balance between power, stiffness and comfort that is so often lacking in other cars of this calibre allowing you to enjoy it from behind the wheel or from the comfort of the back seat.

BENTLEY MULSANNE SPEED

Utilising the incredible 63/4-litre twin turbo V8, the Mulsanne Speed can propel itself from zero to sixty in just 4.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 190mph thanks to a reserved 537 PS (considering the size of the engine). The truly staggering part is when you look at the torque figures. 1100 Nm of torque at 1750 rpm is the real reason this car is so swift. Able to pull the three tonne weight with ease, the engine team at Bentley have created a monster. But it’s not all about brawn, the engine also accommodates the Bentley pioneered technology of displacement shutoff. Deactivating four of the eight cylinders under light load, you can enjoy a respectable fuel economy of around 19 mpg on a combined run. This is by no means an economical car producing a CO2 figure of 2 g km, and although impressive for the performance and size, 19 mpg won’t be winning any awards. But what this car delivers - if you are able to disregard the efficiency factor - is an incredibly high performance luxury vehicle at the

pinnacle of comfort. And when you consider it is just a second or two slower than the vast majority of supercars on the road, you begin to understand quite what Bentley have managed to achieve here. Of course, with all of that power comes great responsibility and thankfully the clever engineers at Bentley were on hand to provide everything necessary to ensure you can enjoy every morsel this car has to offer. The steering is firm and surprisingly responsive adapting to the speed to consistently deliver the most comfortable and assured feel, which is paired with a selfleveling air suspension system which can be electronically altered whilst driving through the 8” high-res screen to keep the car firmly on the road at any speed. In every aspect, this is a drivers car, but of course, you will want to enjoy the comfort in the back every now and again. With soft sumptuous leather adorning every last millimetre of seating along with plump carpeting, who

bentleymotors.com

74

YOUR DRIVE can blame you? And with a 2200W 20-speaker Naim system, iPad docks and rear screens on hand along with champagne cooler if necessary, you can sit back and truly relax. The driver interface is clean and sophisticated with traditional gauges and air vent controls to maintain the classic appeal synonymous with the British marque. However, not shying away from the cars performance credentials, the Mulsanne Speed comes with diamond quilted leather seats and knurled sports gear lever, a nod to its racing heritage. Bentley produce outstanding cars, and the new Mulsanne is the perfect example of what this company are capable of. Delivering a package that offers such high levels of comfort, performance, quality and control is no easy feat, but the Bentley engineers have, once again, produced a thing of beauty. Big, bold and oozing luxury, this is the epitome of British motoring, and the marque can be proud to say that it was all their handy work. You can settle for something with a little less power, a little less quality or a little less size, but there is no denying that this is a very hard car to beat when you consider every factor. Even when you simply consider the cars substantial size - which offers passengers more room than they know what to do with - compared to the unbelievable performance in speed, cornering and efficiency, you begin to understand just how impressive a machine this really is. A statement on the road, and one that you will want to take advantage of for yourself, not just leave for someone else to drive while you enjoy the champagne in the back. Although it would be a shame not to drink it...

SAVILLS

Developing Boutique Builds with Chris Lewis, Head of Savills Northcote Road Battersea has been very much in the press and on the global map over the past few years due to the particularly high profile redevelopment of the Power Station and the whole Nine Elms area. Whilst these developments have received a great deal of public interest, it’s worth looking at what the smaller, boutique developments and conversions have to offer, both in Battersea and across London. There is a growing wave of development of boutique schemes around London, those that offer 20 properties or less, and they’re increasingly popular with buyers who want the spec and finish of a new build, with the intimacy and discretion of a smaller building. The apartments in Thornton Place offer exactly that. Built in 1860 and set in a commanding position overlooking the 220 acre Clapham Common, Thornton Place is a magnificently restored rade II listed building, one of the two known locally as ‘the bookends’.

Arranged over eight floors, the Victorian stuccoed building now comprises 32 unique and newly refurbished apartments, from studios to three bed duplexes, most of which stretch the depth of the building and feature stunning dual aspect views. The apartments also showcase the stunning high ceilings of the building, which are in excess of .5 metres on the ground and first floors. The residents will benefit from access to the private landscaped garden, as well as the Common of course, parking and an on-site dedicated concierge service, whilst living in this iconic building. Another conversion of a different kind are the seven new apartments, a penthouse and three mews houses at Bakery Place, tucked discreetly behind Battersea Library in a peaceful cobbled mews. The original bakery buildings were built in 1898, surrounding a courtyard of stables and coach houses, with deep scores in the brickwork on Lavender Walk which, tradition has it, were made by children with pennies waiting outside for their

bread. The transformation now offers fantastic and spacious contemporary properties, which embrace the history of the building and blend historical features like the exposed brickwork with double height top-lit spaces and lightweight steel stairs. Just around the corner from Clapham Junction and its fabulous transport links and amenities, these properties offer a fantastic home in the heart of Battersea. Finally, we have recently launched two new build developments on Bolingbroke Grove, perfectly placed for the shops and restaurants of Northcote Road and Bellevue Road, as well as the lovely open space of Wandsworth Common. Bolingbroke Terrace is a collection of nine striking three and four bedroom contemporary houses, each with a media room, its own patio, a balcony and a garden. Next to Bolingbroke Terrace is Searcy House, with its Bauhaus inspired exterior, comprising seven urban styled apartments with ‘Scandi’ interiors. The apartments have been architecturally designed with fantastic quality in mind with floor-to-ceiling windows, and both developments have been built to a high environmental standard, using the latest sustainable technology and embracing all the advantages of low carbon footprint living. These boutique developments typically offer the convenience and amenities you’d expect from larger sites, from concierge services to contemporary features, so buyers rarely lose out by choosing a development on a smaller scale. These new smaller developments in Battersea have everything to offer, without a compromise. Not all buyers like the impersonal feel of big schemes, some want that sense of living amongst a close-knit community, with faces that become familiar and neighbours that become friends. Choosing hard landscaping materials - The world of hard landscaping materials can be a minefield a boggling array of new or reclaimed, natural or manmade paving, softwood, hardwood or manmade decking, decorative aggregates and feature stones in a myriad of colours, shapes and sizes and that’s even before we touch on the subject of grouts and pointing. So, when thinking about how you want your garden to look as a finished product how do you narrow your choice of materials? • What is the material to be used for? • Will it be a new stone for a contemporary scheme, a reclaimed one to enhance a period property or perhaps a wooden material, either natural or manmade? • Will it be seen directly outside the home providing a link between inside and out?

• Will children play on it in the winter months when a lawn is perhaps too wet to be used? Does it • therefore have to have a good anti-slip properties? • Will it be sited in sun or shade, or both? • Will it be used as a flooring or vertical walling, fencing material? • How much ongoing maintenance will be required to keep it looking fresh? When designing for clients I never underestimate the matter of ongoing maintenance. If you are to spend any amount of money on hard landscaping in the garden then it should be something that will last for years. That said though, all materials, even manmade ones will discolour and age over time, which in most cases helps to settle the scheme into its surroundings. Algae are the scourge

of paving stones and there are many products available on the market to help deter growth. It is always a good idea to speak to the supplier you purchase your stone from for their advice on a cleaning product as natural stones tend to react in different ways to different cleaning agents. The most economical of the natural stones are sandstones, many from India and China and these come in various different colours, the most popular being cream and grey as well as different surface finishes riven generally the most economical , sawn and textured. Sandstone has a good slip resistance even as a sawn smooth slab when wet and this is why it is one of the most commonly used stones for landscaping in the UK. The range of slab sizes is very good so it can be laid in a random / traditional manner or as a single size slab for more modern schemes. Over time we have found that the grey slabs weather better and require less maintenance. The creams are lovely but look best when sparklingly clean which really does mean lots of scrubbing and a situation in full sun where algae will find it hard to take hold. Our own native sandstones are lovely and most are commonly called Yorkstone. New sawn Yorkstone is a lovely material with a slightly sparkly surface and lots of life in each slab. These work well laid both in a traditional and contemporary way but both look best pointed with an exterior tile grout at 3mm wide rather than more traditional sand and cement pointing. Reclaimed Yorkstone which is never pristine and often arrives with holes or bits of old metal in and is never calibrated ie sawn to the same thickness to make it easier to lay) is best laid in a random pattern with a conventional cement mortar. It will become slippery when wet as its surface has already been smoothed by many years of foot traffic where it was originally laid. It does though add instant history to a scheme and works well with reclaimed stock bricks, flint or granite cobbles.

The more expensive natural stones granite, limestone, basalt are often slippery when wet and should have a textured surface applied before laying. This can be a sandblasted or bush hammered finish, both create dents in the surface of the slabs to provide grip but this process does leave the slabs overall effect as a matt one and often they can seem a little lifeless. This can work well when combined with other slabs of a bright hue as a border or detail. Many of the best grey and cream slabs lie within the limestone range but all should be approved for use outside. Some limestone from southern Europe will not take the cold of an English winter and should be avoided as they will shatter in the frost.

JLL RESIDENTIAL

Pre-Referendum Uncertainty The Prime Central London Market suffers before the EU decision. After a period of increased activity, as buyers rushed to beat the April stamp duty deadline, Prime Central London is experiencing a subdued market ahead of the EU referendum, according to estate agency W.A.Ellis. Richard Barber, director at W.A.Ellis, comments on the PCL sales market: “April saw the government collect a record of nearly £1.2 billion in stamp duty, as landlords rushed to beat higher stamp duty rates on second properties. These national figures are reflected by transaction levels within PCL, which have halved since March, according to LonRes; only 110 houses have sold within SW1, SW3, SW7, SW10, W8, and W14, which is indicative not just of the hesitancy surrounding the EU Referendum, but the huge increase in the cost of moving at the upper end of the market. “Various apocalyptic visions of what may or may not happen if we leave the EU on June 23rd have continued to confound the electorate over the last two months. As a result, it would appear that buying a new property has been put on hold by the majority of potential purchasers until the future of the UK is determined.” Lucy Morton, Head of Agency at W.A.Ellis and JLL, comments on the PCL lettings market: “Uncertainty over ‘Brexit’ has been hitting Prime Central London landlords hard, with rents being adversely affected. There are reports of recruitment freezes across the city and firms delaying

relocating staff to London to see what awaits the postreferendum. This, of course, has had an impact on prices, and the unprecedented surplus of stock has put further downward pressure on the rental market. “With this in mind, we have been advising landlords to reduce rents, and this has yielded positive results with enquiry levels up, and a substantial increase in lettings being agreed. In this sort of market, minimising vacant periods is more important than waiting for a slightly premium rental offer for example, over the course of a year, a 5 higher rental offer is negated if it means that a property stays vacant for an extra two and half weeks. As always our message is clear: accurate pricing and pristine presentation should be a landlord’s main consideration in volatile market conditions.”
