After the shenanigans at Monaco this year, you’d think there was enough competition on the track and in the pits. But for the watch guys, it’s on the billboards and cars, too.
owned by foreign concerns, but the majority of the cars are built in the UK. Bernie Ecclestone is doing his best to force F1 into the sphere of the Middle East and Asia, shutting down venerable European races because he cares not a bit about tradition, but the watch brands won't mind: their markets, too, are shifting away from Europe. They’ll need an increase in sophistication in watch buyers in previously-untapped markets because that’s where the growth is. Every time Lewis or Nico wins a race, IWC benefits from the association. Every time the cameras pan the course – anywhere on the course

cabbie is caught by CCTV in a day. And when Romain Grosjean does well in a Lotus, Richard Mille can rejoice, so even the artisan/boutique brands are in on the action. Has Lewis calmed down yet? Possibly. Not seen by F1 fans, though, is the knock-down rivalry between the watch brands. Why? Because the stakes are that high when you’re dealing with the visibility of Grand Prix racing, as well as the rest: Le Mans, the Indy 500 and other motorsport championships – said to rival the Olympics and football for sheer exposure value and audience size. Rarely has any synergy between such disconnected entities or goods – cars-plus-watches – delivered such rich pay-offs. TAG Heuer, Rolex, Oris, Richard Mille, IWC, Blancpain, Hublot, Tissot – we could go on, but you get the drift: few watch brands lack some link to cars, whether on the road or on the track or competition. While Parmigiani Fleurier’s association with Bugatti is strictly street, it’s been bitter for the rest on the track. For decades, TAG Heuer was the default brand in F1; now every track is swamped with Rolex logos. Hublot is simply the latest in a long line of watchmakers who have wooed Ferrari. And they continue to join in the fray because there just may be no higher sportrelated profile than deadly, death-defying, superskilled F1. Golf? Gimme a break. Every time there’s an F1 race,

that sponsors the winner has an excuse to send out a chest-beating press release. The victor is always seen changing between car and podium in readiness for the microphone to be shoved in his face, donning the appropriate baseball hat and strapping on the watch from the company that paid millions to place a patch on his shoulder, a decal on his helmet and a logo on the car’s wings. For the UK, there’s a vested interest in F1. The teams may be
As for the watches, they don't have to ooze F1ness, because most are sporty to begin with, but some do play the race card, like B.R.M., all of whose watches look like car parts – even the name recalls a long-gone F1 team. Rolex, now the 800lb gorilla in F1, hasn't felt any need to issue a model with a Grand Prix connection, but TAG Heuer watches can’t help but conjure up thoughts of motorsport because the TAG Heuer/TAG McLaren bond has been strong for decades and remains so.

May saw Blancpain’s Endurance Series reach Silverstone, while their Lamborghini Trofeo completion features the muchadmired GTs from Sant’Agata, festooned with images of the company’s watches. Petrolheads who never heard of Blancpain five years ago now think immediately of those timepieces when Lambos are mentioned. Where it gets interesting is when the marketing stops and the technology feeds across from one to the other. generously sized and shielded by solid protective shoulders. Despite its elegant appearance, the Ingenieur Automatic Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” is thus extremely functional, robust and suitable for everyday use. One of the hallmarks of the Laureus special editions, along with their blue dial, is the engraving on the case back. The motif for this year’s engraving is based on the winning entry submitted for the 2014 drawing competition organized by IWC within all the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation projects worldwide. The subject, “Time to celebrate”, encouraged many children and young people from all over the world to submit entries. The jury selected the drawing by 13-year-old Nakayenga Zahara from Nakulabye in Uganda. Her picture shows a group of happy cheerleaders with pom-poms, celebrating a goal. Nakayenga Zahara grew up in the poor district of Nakulabye, close to the Ugandan capital of Kampala. significance of pearls coupled with their style and splendour has birthed the precedence of pearl engagement rings, replacing the traditional use of diamonds with a more modern and stylised gem. Pearls remain a suitable gift at weddings due to their utopian significance, as gleaming brides are often bestowed with gifts of pearls from their Fathers as well as their grooms. Commonly bridesmaids are also gifted in pearls which can range from a multitude of mesmerising, hues, shapes and styles, enabling the bride to complement the overall bridal attire. No other gem has the capability to convey the warmth, depth, and eternal love a pearl can. Pearls have been long celebrated from the Roman Empire to the Elizabethan period, and now continue to be revered within the 21st Century due to their cultural and historical significance. The tradition of wearing pearls has unarguably become an essential element of weddings due to their ability to provide brides an effortless and timeless elegance. No wonder Grace Kelly said ‘pearls are always appropriate’.

Distinctively intense and with a velvety taste, Esthechoc boasts incredible skin enhancing properties. A daily portion, which is just 7.5 grams – 38kcal, increases the level of antioxidants in the skin, improving its microcirculation, raising its oxygen level and preventing ageing. Available exclusively from Harrods and www.esthechoc. com, this revolutionary chocolate offers a different approach towards skincare, containing 70% cocoa and combining two antioxidants that contain the strongest anti-ageing properties: cocoa flavanols and astaxanthin carotenoid. The anti-ageing properties of cocoa have been known for centuries, however, to provide our bodies with a sufficient amount we would need to eat 100 grams of dark chocolate every day, which may result in significant weight gain (100 grams is equal to over 500 kcal!) For total privacy, and something to consider if you decide to honeymoon here, guests can choose to have treatments in-villa too. If you do choose to escape to the Coco Collection for a special occasion, it gives members of staff no greater pleasure than to help you make this the trip of a lifetime. From help arranging a very special proposal on the beach, to a private dinner on a remote, lone Sandbank with nothing but sea surrounding you while watching the sunset, nothing is too much and the team will try their very best to make it unforgettable for you. Dining options on the island are wonderfully diverse. Guests can choose to dine in their villas or head out to one of the high quality restaurants. Just along is Tsuki, a traditional Japanese restaurant with fresh sushi and sashimi; and then on the water is Aqua, a romantic alfresco restaurant that serves Southeast Asian inspired freshly caught seafood dishes. Based near the entrance of the Coco Residences Stars Restaurant and Bar serves Modern Classical cuisine with European influences. Exquisite French Pastry in the Heart of London First it was the cupcake. Then it was the macaroon. Now choux pastry is set to take centre stage with the recent launch of specialist patisserie Maître Choux in South Kensington. The brainchild of top pastry chef Joakim Prat, who came to London to take on the role of Joël Robuchon’s Head Pastry Chef at L’Atelier, before moving on to Mayfair’s The Greenhouse, Maître Choux is the only pastry shop in the UK with a three Michelin star experienced chef at the helm! Choux pastry is a staple of every patisserie in France, it is a very malleable yet simple bakery base yet in the hands of Joakim, it is transformed into something quite extraordinary. Wanting to offer customers a quality of dessert hitherto found only in the most exclusive eateries, Joakim spent months perfecting Maître Choux’s range of éclairs, choux and chouquettes (empty choux pastry casings that are traditionally eaten in France for breakfast or as a snack). As visually stunning as they are delicious, Joakim’s hand-crafted designs are baked throughout the day in the state-of-the-art kitchen at Maître Choux’s South ensington shop. Some of the choux can even be filled upon ordering for incomparable crispiness. Bringing a contemporary twist to a classic French speciality, these veritable works of art make the perfect dessert, indulgent snack or gift. A must try is the newly released blueberry & violet, perfect for a summers snack in the park. Maître Choux, 15 Harrington Road, South Kensington, London SW7 3ES www.MaitreChoux.com

Choose between the Classic and Vegetarian option, both including three generous courses for two people, which feature an antipasti selection, homemade olive focaccia, a delicious, nutritious salad of pearl barley with grilled aubergine and rocket as well as moreish savoury tarts filled with pancetta and taleggio (or spinach and ricotta in the veggie version). Larger dishes of corn-fed chicken supreme and courgette, mint and ricotta frittata ooze the refreshing and zingy tastes of summer accompanied by a fresh salad of leafy greens with aged, Italian balsamic dressing. Dessert is a slice of indulgence with individual strawberry shortcrust tarts and traditional Piedmont biscotti to finish. Add an additional bottle of fruity Italian red or chilled white wine, available in-store, or make an occasion of it with some bubbles – Prosecco Santo Stefano (£14.75), a refreshing sparkler from the Ruggeri winery pairs particularly well. If you have kids in tow, the Carluccio’s children’s picnic, priced at just £10, includes a selection of nutritious dishes such as freshly made mini tomato and mozzarella pizza; tuna mayo dip with vegetable crudités; creamy Italian cow’s cheese (cut into wedges); and classic homemade beef meatballs in a tomato sauce. The Spritz Shack at The Gun, Docklands This summer, The Gun Docklands has teamed up with Aperol to bring a slice of Italy to the famous Grade II listed building which is conveniently situated on the banks of the River Thames. They are inviting customers to come and enjoy their summer events space which has been transformed into the ‘Spritz Shack’ and to sip on Aperol Spritz which is the most widespread and commonly drunk aperitif in Italy. The secret Aperol recipe of herbs and roots with a touch of vanilla is a classic cocktail which is a mix of three parts prosecco, two parts Aperol, a generous slice of orange and a splash of soda. Lower in alcohol than most spirit based cocktails and very refreshing, this is an ideal alternative for a hot summer’s day. Mixed with plenty of ice, the infusion of bitter and sweet oranges gives it its unique taste. To go with your spritz, The Gun is priding itself on providing simple but superb picnic and market stall menus which will be stacked with all the essential

Gordon Ramsay Maze Grill Hospital Road
After recently opening maze Grill on Park Walk, the Gordon Ramsay Group has been busy opening the third in the family – maze Grill Royal Hospital Road in the heart of Chelsea at the former site of Ramsay’s Foxtrot Oscar. Relaxed, and welcoming with a slightly different feel to the original maze grill in Grosvenor Square, the intimate, neighbourhood restaurant takes its inspiration from the grill rooms of Manhattan with a very British twist. Specialising in dry aged prime steaks, from British rare breeds to grain-fed
SDA and Japanese Wagyu fillet, the menu also
showcases a range of made-to-order – at the front of house raw bar no less – contemporary sushi and sashimi dishes. Choose from a California roll made with snow crab and avocado or even a fresh Sashimi selection of tuna, salmon, scallops served on ice with a sushi garnish. Other would-be starters include a fantastic classic Caesar salad, that would also make the perfect lighter lunch dish; or classic English asparagus served with a poached egg and purple mustard dressing. The colour of the yolk against the green of the asparagus is a wonderful attack on the senses. It goes without saying that whatever cut of meat you choose – and if you don’t know which to go for, the knowledgeable staff are on hand to explain – it is cooked to perfection and is very generously portioned. A variety of sauces, from peppercorn to the House steak sauce only enhance the flavours while an array of sides including the must-have juicy Portobello mushrooms and fries finish off the plate perfectly. If you don’t fancy a steak however, the Short rib burger with bacon, cheese, onion and a sweet pickle is a great choice and other highlights include Beef Cheek & Bone Marrow pie or a Salmon Fillet. For dessert, the Frozen lime yoghurt with toasted meringue and crunchy granola is quite simply divine and a must-have regardless of how full you are. Set over two floors, the restaurant maintains a great sense of intimacy with a rich colour palette of oxblood red, lime green and sumptuous chocolate. There is a mixture of seating from the lighter tables on ground floor, to the darker booths downstairs and secluded caverns. Amusing artwork from Slinkachu and Terry O’Neill adorns the walls.

The Chargrilled salmon fillet served with steamed asparagus and watercress hollandaise is another highlight of the menu and goes well with the creamy olive oil mashed potatoes and buttered kale and spinach. Although a challenge with the impressive portion sizes, you must leave some room for dessert as the selection is incredible. The star of the show is most certainly the chocolate bomb which is served with a warm salted caramel sauce and offers the ultimate indulgence for those with a sweet tooth. Of course, if you can’t handle that you could always opt for the cheese board, but it is a must during at least one of your visits because there is no way you won’t be returning. the son of the creator of the famous red aperitif, one of the essential components of a Negroni cocktail (along with gin and sweet vermouth), in the gorgeous Vittorio Emanele II Gallery. After my inauspicious start in Negroni-making, you can understand that I'm honoured to have been invited by the Campari company itself to host an evening at the Camparino during the official Negroni Week (1st - 7th June) where I'll be walking in the footsteps of real heroes of mine, serving this fantastic drink in an epic location - right opposite the equally famous Duomo. This time, I'll be making what I believe will be the world's oldest Negroni. I have assembled
00 years' worth of liquid
history in the shape of a Gordon's Gin from 1908, a Cinzano Rosso from the late 1920s and a bottle of Campari from the same period. These are ingredients that would have been exactly the same as they had on the shelves back in the day when the Negroni was conceived (the story goes that an aristocrat, Count Camillo Negroni, at Florence's Casoni Bar in 1919, asked for a 'kick' to his Americano and Fosco Scarselli, the bartender, swapped out the soda for gin). Putting my own name against these icons of the drinks world, in a bar that's 100-years-old (itself the 'heir' to the Caffe Campari, set up by Davide's father, Gaspare Campari, in 18 7), is truly humbling, I can tell you And it's all the better as Negroni Week is in aid of a good cause - every one of the more than 1,400 bars that participate give a donation for every drink sold to charity, and Campari itself gives thousands more. For me, I have long learned that the Negroni is elegant in its simplicity, no fussing about with shakers or anything. I'd love to teach you how to appreciate it too. I can't promise I can make you a 00-year-old Negroni for you, but my staff and I can introduce you to this king of cocktails at my bar at Playboy Club, London, any time. Though I must admit, I always flinch when I present a finished Negroni to a customer, always with Signor Raffaello's ghost at my shoulder! Salute!

2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed & British Grand Prix
Flat out and Fearless
‘Juan Manuel Fangio’s decision to race “at 100 per cent for the only time in my life” to overhaul the Ferraris to win the 1957 German GP.’
As the British Summer takes hold, events start rolling in. And when it comes to motor sport, June and July offer the best you will find anywhere in the world. Packing the globally renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed and Formula 1 British Grand Prix into consecutive weekends at the end of the month, the British public are in for a real treat. The Goodwood Festival of Speed, although started in 199 has gained rapid momentum over the past few years with the need for a cap on attendance to be introduced restricting the show to those fortunate enough to get their hands on one of the 150,000 (per day) tickets available. It has seen the worlds greatest drivers, both old and new, attempt to conquer the short but challenging hill climb through Goodwood House’s impressive grounds. Legends of racing will once again be in attendance with the likes of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton making their regular appearances flying the flag for British motor sport with faces adding to guest list from other walks of motor sport life such as one of the world’s most spectacular drivers, en Block who will take the new Ford Focus RS up the hill for its
debut...and is
sure to make it an exhilarating spectacle of it. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, do not fret, as the theme for this years event is aptly titled ‘Flat- ut and Fearless
Racing on the Edge’ which should give you some
idea of just what is in store over the four day celebration. ‘Flatout and Fearless’ typifies some of the most spectacular drivers and moments from motor sport’s past and present. Who could forget the wheel-bumping final-lap battle between Gilles Villeneuve’s Ferrari and Rene Arnoux’s Renault at the 1979 French Grand Prix, or the sight of the legendary Colin McRae hurling his Subaru over the Bunnings jumps on Rally Australia in 1997
Juan Manuel Fangio’s decision to race “at 100 per
cent for the only time in my life to overhaul the Ferraris to win the 1957 German GP, and the legendary duel between Barry Sheene and enny Roberts at Silverstone in 1979 provide further examples of how racing on the edge has captured the imagination of motor sport fans across the globe. With its narrow line and deceptive corners, the hill climb is sure to provide some of its very own memorable action and with the cars and drivers set to attend, there is plenty of potential for a few Flat- ut and Fearless times to be set. The actions runs from 25-28 June with the timed hill climb taking place on the final day. If you aren’t fortunate enough to snap up some tickets however, you can still enjoy some of the action on television, you just won’t enjoy the authentic sounds and smells of the impressive machinery. If you are after a more refined take on the action, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours d’elegance and they are set to celebrate in style with an astonishing display of exquisite automotive machinery across seven classes. Situated on the Cartier Lawn, the concours d’elegance continues to be renowned as the definitive celebration of fine automotive design, and the display assembled at Goodwood this year will be no exception. The 80th anniversary of Figoni et Falaschi will be celebrated with a category exclusively for cars bodied by the legendary French coachbuilder, which enveloped some of the most sought-after cars of the day with Giuseppe Figoni’s distinctive teardrop shapes and golden wood interiors. Five Figoni et Falaschi cars will be brought to Goodwood from the sensational including Delahaye, Bugatti and Talbot-Lago machinery.

Formula 1 has played a major role in the Goodwood Festival of Speed and its development over the years and 2015 will be no exception. Welcoming five of the leading Formula 1 teams competing in this years World Championship, both cars and drivers will find themselves in the newly expanded F1 Paddock presented by Sky Sports F1. World Champion constructor Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team will be joined at Goodwood by Infiniti Red Bull Racing, Williams Martini Racing, Scuderia Ferrari and McLaren Honda, with a group of superstar drivers set to drive their respective cars during the June 25-28 event. Mercedes dominated the 2014 World Championship as drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg engaged in a flat-out and fearless battle of racing on the edge that perfectly embodies this year’s Festival of Speed theme. Not only did Hamilton claim his second world title, but with Rosberg second and the pair winning 1 of the year’s 19 grands prix, Mercedes was able to take its first F1 constructors’ crown. Ferrari, whose 2015 F1 driver line-up features four-time champion Sebastian Vettel and 2007 title winner imi Raikkonen, is a Festival of Speed regular. Raikkonen made his debut on the fabled 1.1 -mile Hillclimb last year with another Scuderia legend, John Surtees. Red Bull, the most successful constructor of the modern era, with four straight drivers’ titles for Vettel from 2010-1 as well as a quartet of constructors’ crowns, this year has Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil vyat

racing its
cars. Williams, a winner of 114 grands prix and a combined 1 drivers’ and constructors’ crowns, has undergone a resurgence over the past 12 months and in 2014 finished third in the championship
its best campaign for over a decade.
McLaren’s attendance will pay tribute to the legendary constructor’s relationship with Honda, which has been re-established for the 2015 grand prix season after 22 seasons apart. Together the two marques dominated the sport from 1988-91 with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost winning four straight drivers’ titles and Gerhard Berger helping the team achieve the same number of constructors’ crowns. A McLaren still holds the outright record for the Goodwood Hillclimb, Nick Heidfeld having set an as-yet unbeaten 41. -second time in 1999 in an MP4-1 machine.

Following last months disastrous outcome for Lewis Hamilton in Monaco, he will be looking to make his mark on home turf when the Formula 1 calendar returns to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix and has demonstrated that he will only be looking forward. “I can’t express the way I feel at the moment. I saw the team out in the pit-lane on one of the screens and thought Nico was pitting. I came in with full confidence that the others had done the same. This is a race that’s been close to my heart for years and it’s special to me, so I really wanted to win. The team have been brilliant all year, so I don’t blame them. We’ll analyse and work out what went wrong, but we’ll do that collectively and try to improve for the future. I always say to my team and my fans, we win and we lose together. You live to fight another day. Prior to the mesmerising Monaco Grand Prix which saw Hamilton miss out on his first win at the legendary circuit thanks to some miscalculations from his team, Mercedes AMG Petronas finalised a new contract with the British driver for the 201 to 2018 ne seasons, securing his position in the team.
Since making his Formula
ne debut with McLaren in 2007,
Lewis has started every one of his 15 Grands Prix with MercedesBenz power and this track record includes

Championship; this title saw him become the first driver since Juan Manuel Fangio to win the World Championship in a works Mercedes-Benz.
Hamilton commented “Mercedes is my home and I couldn’t be happier to be staying here for another three years. This is a company filled with real passionate racers, from the board room to the factory floor, and an incredible hunger to win. Even after the success of last year, that hunger is greater than ever
and it’s the same for me, too.
The Mercedes car I am driving right now is the best I have ever had in my career; it’s just so much fun to be out there every weekend, on the limit and fighting to win at every track. Mercedes-Benz began supporting me in 1998 so I am very proud that this contract means I will mark 20 years with Mercedes in 2018. Head

in place. Lewis enjoyed an historic World Championship season with Mercedes-Benz last year and it was a priority for this season to renew his contract for the next term. We have taken the right amount of time with the process and not rushed ourselves. The result is a strong agreement that will enhance Lewis’ association with the Mercedes-Benz brand, and that recognises and respects the market value of Lewis and of Mercedes in Formula
ne. Lewis’ sporting
track record speaks for itself and he is a great personality for the company. Personally, I am looking forward to continuing to race with the strongest driver pairing in Formula
ne and to more historic achievements together.
The focus won’t be solely on Lewis however, as Nico Rosberg will be keen to shake any doubts about his position in the team and look to close the gap on the championship title, but he has a lot of work to do. “That was my luckiest experience in racing so far. What a crazy race. I was surprised when I saw no one else behind the safety car than me. I didn’t know what was happening in that moment. But I concentrated on getting temperature into the tyres as they felt like ice. Until the safety car Lewis has done a perfect job, he was better than me over the weekend, so he definitely deserved the win. I know how horrible he must feel now. This weekend was a warning for me that I have to work even harder for the next race.

Jaguar Reborn 85
As the luxury British marque looks to the future with the all-new XF and XE models hitting showrooms, Jaguar take a moment to reflect on their past and remember just how successful the company was in the motorsport world. Pots and planters to create maximum impact Small town gardens often have dark corners in which the overhanging branches of a neighbouring tree, overgrown shrubbery or dark entranceway prohibit successful planting. No matter how much good soil, compost and fertiliser you dig into these areas whatever is planted fails to thrive. There is hope though. Where traditional in-ground planting fails a decorative pot with shade tolerant plants in can thrive and create an interesting focal point turning a dull area into one that is a joy to look at. There are so many pots to choose from that the choice can be a little boggling. Many are a matt finish (terracotta, stone, concrete) and although these have their place in the garden they will not highlight a shady space as well as a glazed, painted, reflective metal or illuminated planter. The more eye-catching the planter the more the focal point is reinforced. Glazed ceramic pots help to bounce available light around to make

soft damp cloth a couple of times a year to keep them looking shiny. Mirror polished or brushed stainless steel also makes a great planter and these often work nearer to the house where they can highlight a north facing porch or recess in a building and create a striking entrance piece. They will require a regular polish to ensure that there is no limescale build-up from watering on their surface and that fingerprints are removed but other than that they are simple to maintain. Metal and cool shade works far better than metal and sun where the planters often overheat and ‘cook’ the roots of the plants in them. the combination as striking in the day as it is at night if illumination can be provided. For something a little out of the norm and also with illumination in mind it is possible to purchase interior lit planters, again in a form of plastic that emit a wonderful glow at night. By day they are matt and very simple but at night they come into their own. They almost cry out not to be planted but used simply to act as a highlight in their own right and with the colours of the planters as varied as the colours of the light that can be used with them there is surely a combination for everyone. As with all planters drainage is the key. We use little spacers under the planters to create a void where water can drain out of – these can be as low as 5mm and this combines with a filter layer of a geotextile fabric and an aggregate drainage material which helps to ensure that the water draining out of the container is free of compost and therefore less likely to generate dirty patches and algae on surrounding surfaces. All plants require water and more so in a planter so regular watering and a slow release fertiliser or liquid fertiliser in the summer months will help keep the plants looking healthy.

The other places we'd looked around were just intent on selling. nlike Wren, none of them were thinking outside of the box. Thanks to the skill of the designer and Terry and Roger's input, ideas slowly grew. He was brilliant, smiled Terry. He helped to build ideas and inspirations. He was very patient - an absolute treasure Terry knew she wanted a kitchen-diner with subtle colours. She wanted them to be different but in sympathy with each other. The couple moved the toilet, which was off the dining area, to create more storage space. The new dining area has an oak feel which complements
