FROM THE EDITOR

The last day of May brought a tremendous amount of rain and wind to the capital. Hardly the warm summer we were imagining - or at least hoping for! Still, a new month and renewed hope for warmer climes begins, and even if all else fails the month of June brings with it a plethora of things to do in and around central London. British sporting insitutions, Royal Ascot and the Wimbledon Tennis Championships take place later this month, whereas in the art world the Tate Modern introduces a new building to the world famous gallery and the Serpentine Gallery unveils its annual Pavilion. Another London institution, after running for 17 years in the West End, Disney’s The Lion King has introduced a
brand new ‘Simba’ in the form of ex Rugby player, Nicholas Afoa providing a great excuse to get down and see it this summer. If you do feel like escaping it all, especially if it rains, then look no further than the tropical island of Antigua. A jewel in the Caribbean crown, the lively island boasts 365 sun-soaked beaches to indulge in. Guaranteed warmth and a slim chance of rain make it an inviting prospect. Don’t worry if you’re not managing to escape, there are a few hideaways opened in London that you can enjoy as Summer Terrace season is now in full swing. You can sample the Jungle Book themed space at Old Bengal Bar or simply being outdoors at any number of fantastic terraces.

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2016: Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) This summer the Serpentine Gallery will unveil its annual architectural project at the Serpentine Pavilion. The project commissioned by the Serpentine Gallery, will this year expand and present one temporary structure surrounded by four Summer Houses in Kensington Gardens. Each Summer House is designed by different architects - Kunlé Adeyemi - NLÉ (Amsterdam/Lagos); Barkow Leibinger (Berlin/New York); Yona Friedman (Paris); and Asif Khan from London, who also created the musical Coca Cola Beatbox Pavilion design at the London 2012 Summer Olympics. All have been asked to take the nearby Queen Caroline’s Temple, a classical style summer house built in 1734, as their inspiration. At the heart of the commission is a pavilion designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the architects behind Two World Trade Center in Manhattan, allowing space for visitors to sit, relax and enjoy the live events held there throughout the summer. serpentinegalleries.org

Royal Ascot 14-18 June
Royal Ascot 2016 will commemorate the Queen’s special 90th birthday this year by naming the 2016 Gold Cup in Her Majesty’s honour. The Gold Cup taking place on the Thursday of the event forms the historic centrepiece of the whole meeting and is one of 27 races at the Royal Meeting with increased value this year. Total prize money has risen to a record £6,580,000, with at least £1 million in prize money each day, and no race is run for less than £80,000. Investing in all areas, the racecourse now boasts a new Unsaddling Enclosure through which the Royal Procession will also pass each day providing a much larger area for the unplaced horses to recover their composure and for owners, trainers and jockeys to debrief. The new oval lawn merges seamlessly into the landscaping of the pre-parade ring layout, creating another attractive equine area within the surrounding hospitality lawns, which has been reshaped to ensure that horses and their connections return to the most suitable environment post-race. Ascot places the highest regard upon the safety and wellbeing of the horses, from the painstaking maintenance of the track, to security within the stables and the provision of immediate, world-
class veterinary attention should it be required. Not only renowned for some of the best racing in the world, Royal Ascot also holds a powerful presence in the global fashion calendar. In recent years, event organisers have produced style guides for the annual meetings and this year introduce BOSS and Fenwick as new supporters. With its family-owned roots dating back to 1882, the variety of occasion wear at stylish heritage department store Fenwick make it the perfect destination for Royal Ascot millinery. Featuring fashion, beauty, accessories, homeware, food, personal shopping and spa services, the store’s eleven branches across England are uniquely British. A record number of overseas entries from eight countries featured among a total of 394 entries for the eight Group One highlights at Royal Ascot when the races closed in mid-April. There were 164 overseas entries in all, as against a previous best of 156 in 2013, including a record 35 from outside Europe (previous highest 27 in 2011). All 30 races will be broadcast live on Channel 4, totalling approximately 30 hours of live coverage across the week. ascot.co.uk

New Tate Modern Opening 17 June, Bankside
A brand new Tate Modern building will open to the public on Friday 17th June 2016 created by architects Herzog & de Meuron, giving the famous gallery 60 per cent more display space, two new public squares and a public viewing platform on the 10th level. The enormous Turbine Hall will become the heart of the new Tate Modern, and will include the existing 6-storey Boiler House on one side and the new 10-storey Switch House rising above the Tanks on the other.
The façade uses brick to match the surface of the existing museum, while creating something radically new – a perforated brick lattice through which the interior lights glow in the evening. The interior of the new building features raw concrete folded into dramatic angles and will be a stunning new building in which to experience art. The grand unveiling will coincide with a complete re-hang and positioning of much-loved works from the collection alongside fascinating new acquisitions.

The Lion King New Simba introduced to famous show
Having run for an incredible 17 years, the ever-popular Lion King musical in the West End has announced the debut of a brand new Simba in the form of New Zealander Nicholas Afoa. Nicholas, 29, made his first ever performance on stage as Simba in the Australian production of the show in 2013. Joining the show here is not only his second ever theatre role but also his first ever time in London. Afoa’s move into musical theatre is an interesting one, once a promising rugby player with the All Blacks before injury forced an early retirement at the age of 22, Afoa dedicated himself to a theatre career and then nearly a decade later beat 400 other hopefuls to the role of Simba in the Australian production. Now in London Afoa joins the talented cast at the Lyceum Theatre where the popularity of the show doesn’t seem to end. Brilliantly reimagined by acclaimed director Julie Taymor, Disney’s beloved film has been transformed into a spectacular stage production telling the story of Simba in all its glory with vibrant colours, stunning effects and enchanting music. Whether you’ve been before or never at all, this is one West End show you just have to see whatever your age. The Lion King plays Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm with matinee performances on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm. There is no performance on a Monday evening.

Palazzo Ralph Lauren Images © Gionata Xerra, courtesy of Ralph Lauren
The World of Ralph Lauren Ken Kessler In Milan to talk to the press about everything we missed at SIHH in January, Luc Perramond, President & CEO of Ralph Lauren Watches & Jewellery, is visibly excited. For 2016, the brand bowed out of the annual Geneva watch-fest, preferring instead to present its new offerings in a more intimate context than a salon with 20,000 or so visitors. The location? Palazzo Ralph Lauren, a private club established for the brand’s top customers. New watches, new venue - he has reasons to be happy. As clubs go, it’s about as lavish and enticing as it gets, with a more “stately home” air than most, and a complete absence of oily arrivistes barking into their iPhones. The revered fashion house uses the premises for clients who may be uncomfortable with shopping in stores or boutiques, or for those who are so time-poor that special arrangements are required. With the press attending in small
groups determined by country, the brand ensured that every scribe was able to examine this year’s new ranges of ladies’ timepieces without any sense of the pressure experienced when a queue of rivals awaits their turn. It helped convey what the special treatment must be like for actual customers. Beyond select clients, explains Perramond, “Club membership extends to friends of the brand, and members can invite friends to join. If you are an ‘insider’ in some way, you can open the door to your friends – that is the way membership will grow, for people who have a strong interest in the brand and want to be a part of it. With Palazzo Ralph Lauren being much more than a mere retail outlet, and with the brand now having history behind it, is there, then, such a thing as a Ralph Lauren “culture”? Perramond: “I think you could say that. We call it a ‘lifestyle’, but it is a culture, a concept that Mr.

Lauren invented 50 years ago, when nobody spoke about lifestyle. Some people share the same values and want to be part of it, and to be associated with it more closely. I think this club is a good way to achieve that.” But we were in Milan to talk about watches, and a question paramount in my mind was how did Ralph Lauren distance itself from other fashion houses that have entered the world of horology with mediocre products? The methodology was skewed: great houses would put their names on watches not commensurate with the quality of their garments, accessories or bags. When a fashion house sells watches that cost less than its prêt-à-porter shoes, something isn’t right. Ralph Lauren arrived with watches housing movements from Piaget, IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre, in cases and bearing dials that oozed the taste personified by the eponymous founder. “Most American designers have followed the route of licensing, the easy route, which is volume, very low price and less attention to quality or exclusivity. They therefore developed this perception in the minds of consumers that ‘fashion’ equals a low-quality, mass-market product in the watch category. “From the beginning, Mr. Lauren wanted to differentiate himself from this. He said at the brand’s first SIHH appearance in 2009: ‘I am not doing a fashion watch. The reason I partnered with Richemont is that I wanted to do an object that would have lasting value, that will be done with real craftsmanship.’ It was such a unique vision in the worlds of fashion or lifestyle that I don’t think people really understood - it went completely against conventional wisdom to say that, ‘I’m taking a route that is more ambitious. I will combine my American spirit and my lifestyle concept with the best craftsmanship in Switzerland.’”
23
COLUMN
Seven years later, and the watch division has its own identity, plus a smattering of future classics in the distinctive Safari and Automotive ranges. Clearly, the standouts reflect Lauren’s love for the equestrian and the automotive, the archetypal model being the Automotive 45mm Chronometer with unique wooden inlay in the dial. Recognising a change in buying patterns over the past decade, the brand chose to concentrate primarily on ladies - or, more accurately, unisex - timepieces for 2016. Models in two sizes include the classic, square RL867 (the 32mm version will just about suit the modern male) and the round RL888 with a fresh dial configuration, and cases measuring 32mm or 38mm. Part of the latter’s appeal is the selection of straps on offer, the company quick to address the burgeoning desire of watch lovers to personalise their timepieces. The lone introduction in the Automotive range is a 39mm version of the small-seconds, time-only model with hand-wound Jaeger-LeCoultre movement, suitable for both ladies’ and men’s wrists. Perramond smiles when reminded that next year is the brand’s 50th Anniversary, Polo Ralph Lauren founded in 1967. He confirms that there will be much to mark the celebrations, but will reveal little beyond, “You can expect something strong!” Four days later, I’m enjoying lunch in the Arts Club, and who enters? Ralph Lauren himself, in the city for the opening of the Ralph Lauren Centre for Breast Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden. Now if only he’d opened a Ralph Lauren Club here….

Montblanc TimeWalker Pythagore The new Montblanc TimeWalker Pythagore Ultra-Light Concept has been designed for Montblanc Ambassador and Chinese professional badminton player, Lin Dan, who completed the “Super Grand Slam”, having won all nine major titles in the badminton world: Olympic Games; World Championships; World Cup; Thomas Cup; Sudirman Cup; Super Series Masters Finals; All England Open; Asian Games and Asian Championships becoming the first and only player to achieve this feat. He is also the winner of five World Championship titles. Affectionately named “Super Dan” by his fans, the 33-year old athlete stands out due to his relentless pursuit of excellence and perfection, as well as for his incredible energy, spirit and sense of style. Lin Dan became a Montblanc Ambassador for Mainland China in 2014 and has become the inspiration behind a number of innovative developments in the TimeWalker Collection. After this year’s successful launch of the TimeWalker ExoTourbillon Minute Chronograph at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva,Montblanc is completing the TimeWalker Collection with the new TimeWalker Pythagore Ultra-Light Concept. The TimeWalker line is highly appreciated for its fusion of revolutionary materials and mechanics combined with the traditional codes of fine watchmaking. This concept timepiece is ultra-light, resistant and robust — the perfect qualities in a timepiece for active men like Lin Dan, who likes an extremely light and comfortable timepiece for both work and play. With use of innovative and revolutionary materials for the TimeWalker Pythagore Ultra-Light Concept. Mont Blanc’s engineers have used a combination of black DLC titanium for the horns and ITR²®Kevlar®/Carbon elements for the middle case, case back, bezel and crown, making the new TimeWalker Pythagore Ultra-Light Concept one of the lightest mechanical timepieces in the world - a mere 14.88 grams.
ITR²®, stands for Innovative, Technical, Revolutionary Resin, a composite material charged with carbon nanotubes. It is extremely difficult to manufacture, with only a handful of specialists able to make watch cases out of it. It is eight times lighter than steel and four times lighter than titanium. It has been combined for the first time by Montblanc with Kevlar®/carbon, a highly resistant synthetic fibre, to reach utmost robustness, creating a world première in case-making materials. To finish off the aesthetically pleasing piece, the sporty and virile appearance of this ultra high-performance case is reinforced by alternating matt and satin-finishing as well as by the red circle made of ITR²® which echoes the colour of Lin Dan’s national flag. The TimeWalker Pythagore Ultra-Light Concept is also equipped with the new Montblanc manually-wound Calibre MB M62.48, featuring the hours, minutes, small seconds with a 50-hour power reserve.

Diamond Eagle The latest women’s watch from Bell & Ross has been inspired by the celestial sphere, the vast ocean littered with stars, like clusters of shimmering islands in the dark. Featuring a midnight blue dial studded with sparkling diamonds, like a slice of the night sky tethered to the wrist, the watch evokes a spectacular journey to the stars. A journey without travel, punctuated solely by the movement of the hands. The very first aviators used visual navigation, based on observations of the sun. When night fell, it was the stars’ turn to guide their aeroplanes. The new timepiece pays tribute to the vast night skies that have always aided and fascinated pilots on their voyages as well as navigators also used the position of the stars in the night sky to find their bearings out in the ocean. Featuring an iconic round dial set in a gentle square, the new Diamond Eagle brings together a whole host of details to symbolise the celestial, such as the midnight blue dial and alligator strap to the gleaming metal indices that pierce the inky darkness, and the seven diamonds that glitter like dazzling stars. The stones are set into the dial in the pattern of the Aquila constellation, named for Jupiter’s eagle. This legendary cluster of stars is easily visible from the earth and the connection of the eagle further lends itself to connotations of power, strength and control in the sky. bellross.com

The ability to produce quality mechanical movements has never been higher and the strongest two high end proponents in explicitly output terms are Omega and Rolex. Delivering close to, if not more than a million watches last year, it would be very easy to suggest that quality of movement and level of finishing has to be diminished when producing at this quantity. Rolex is known as a brand to hold its value and some vintage (and modern!) models have proven to be very worthwhile investments. Although some vintage Omega models, especially classic Speedmaster’s given their association with the space race, are very sought after, it is easy for the Omega name to go under the radar somewhat. In modern horology, the independent brands, those not under the umbrella of a larger group, are typically looked at for innovating complications and reinventing the wheel but by their size cannot deliver too economical a product and thus find a niche consumer. In my opinion, Omega is one of only a few brands that bridges the gap between independent innovation and a mass consumer product at a very value based price point.
For example, Jaeger LeCoultre’s latest Geohypsic collection have used a patented True Second escapement bringing an element of higher horology to their regular collection but it is still the only model for now that incorporates this update. Omega, on the other hand, have introduced George Daniel’s famous Co-Axial escapement across all their families wherever possible going so far as to improve on the original by creating the Master Co-Axial and in turn the world’s first Master Chronometer. Essentially the CoAxial escapement acts like two hearts for one body, positioned on top of one another thus increasing durability, time keeping and now by using silicon; the resistance to magnetism to a world record standard. It shouldn’t be understated just how much magnetism can affect a mechanical timepiece hence the soft iron cage that protects all of IWC’s Pilot’s watches if used in their intended environment. Another brand may choose a price point that would reflect this unique and exclusive position but given Omega’s output, they actually pass the savings of doing everything in-house to the consumer. This is best reflected in the new Constellation Globemaster collection, the above mentioned world’s first Master Chronometer. Omega have a rich and varied history, some of which is used in the Globemaster, which is otherwise in Omega’s words; the most advanced mechanical calibre ever produced. It is important here to read “advanced” and not “complicated,” as ultimately the 8900 calibre will provide the base of the Globemaster family to build its further complications on. However, advanced definitely means every possible cutting edge process has been utilised to create a robust, mechanical watch that Omega have deemed worthy of using a new certificate warranting the build quality of this watch. Please note the METAS (Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology) certificate is open to all, Omega’s
New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF
fluted bezels over the years. That said, none have yet to use Tungsten Carbide, a virtually impervious metal as is used on the non precious metal variants of the Globemaster. A sapphire caseback showcases the beautifully finished movement carrying the observatory medallion synonymous of the Constellation series but with an added eight stars on this occasion to highlight the eight steps of the METAS Certificate. Fulfilled in steel, steel & gold or my particular favourite, in all Sedna rose gold. Sedna gold is an alloy composite of gold, copper and palladium unique to Omega offering a richer hue to the gold but also creating a stronger level of durability with the added palladium. On the wrist, the watch feels substantial while not overly big working well dress down or with a suit. The dial is very legible and easy to read at the quickest of glances. The model was originally released in 2015 but has begun to see boutiques and wrists as of Spring 2016. An Annual Calendar complication has been released this past Basel fair, which though not a new idea, is delivered in a very clever way and at a price point that should make the Globemaster one of Omega’s Globemaster has simply been the first to be METAS accredited. Taking everything exceptional from the Co-Axial base and adding to it the unprecedented level of anti-mangetivity developed in their Gauss series creates the Master Co-Axial. The METAS certification process goes a step further than COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) in that it warrants the entire timepiece, not simply the movement. All Calibre 8900’s will be COSC Chronometre certified as standard but then cased and METAS certified to a level of 0 to +5 seconds a day; an astonishing level of accuracy for a mechanical timepiece. Officially, there are eight individual steps that provide the basis for METAS accreditation including an explicit test to the movement alone once exposed to 15,000 Gauss. In offering arguably the most thorough testing procedures currently possible to an everyday timepiece, Omega are warrantying that the wearer can trust the accuracy of his or her Globemaster in total faith. A small coup de grace is when purchased, an online link can detail the exact METAS results of each particular timepiece – a lovely touch bringing the consumer as close as possible to the testing process. Moving away from the geekery that is COSC and METAS certification, there would be no point delivering a state of the art timepiece without apply an emotive element too. In short, the Globemaster is a gorgeous piece of design. Sitting under the Constellation umbrella, Omega utilise a pie-pan dial first seen in 1952 adding a little retro styling and light play especially noticeable in the sunburst blue dial. The 39mm case carries a brushed finish and can be purchased on either a bracelet or alligator strap. Some may note the fluted bezel is reminiscent of Rolex but Omega’s own heritage, like most other brands, also shows a variety of
most prominent collections for some time to come. Above all, the COSC and METAS Certification, the anti-magnetivity and the very aesthetically pleasing design means nothing if it is not consumer led. The steel model on alligator strap retails at £4,785.00 and on solid steel bracelet for £4,860.00. Be it the ability to produce such a quantity as Omega are capable of doing so the price point can be kept down or a conscious decision to price the model to be accessible, even those not currently fans of the brand will have to admit you are getting an awful lot for your money. Ultimately, it is very rare for a new model to be released that us as retailers are also this enamoured with and I can safely suggest you visit us or another accredited Omega retailer and try it for yourself…you won’t be disappointed!

FINANCE WITH MATT GOLD
Brexit and Donald Trump Our financial insider reviews the global markets
Just a month before the EU referendum, Chancellor George Osborne commented Brexit would lead to a “do-it-yourself recession”. Remain campaigners “Stronger In” argument is focusing on the economy whilst Vote Leave is zooming into the immigration issues. According to polls conducted by ICM, ComRes and Ipsos MORI, the top issues in people’s mind are immigration and economy. So the Remain camp and Vote Leave camp have to leverage on these big hitter issues. The Remain camp got the US President Obama to comment “Brexit would put UK at the back of the queue for trade talks”. It is a fear factor play and it probably works on some of the middle class voters. The fear of some global firms moving their Europe headquarters away from Britain (to Dublin perhaps). Some business owners also do not like the uncertainty in tariffs and the trouble of getting visas for overseas EU workers. Looking at hotels and restaurants in London, one could sense the importance of EU workers. The Vote Leave camp focuses on immigration issues and getting the management control back from the EU to the UK government. United States, China, Japan or Australia are not part of the EU and they are not exactly missing out. UK is physically close to EU but that still does not mean UK has to be part of it. The fact that no one can imagine UK to give up the Sterling and adopt Euro means it is acceptable to keep a distance. Vote Leave does not mean the UK ceases to trade or work with the EU, it just means putting a bit more distance in between. A DIY Recession may be worrying, but staying in the EU does not mean the UK will always be able to avoid a recession. Japan has been in recession for years and recession seems no more annoying than the bad weather in winter. There are economic fixes for economic problems. The unknown is true and is part of the future. Would Brexit be a transition similar to Sir Ferguson passing Manchester United to David Moyes? Or more like a Leicester City 5,000 to 1 Premier League journey? It is up to the people. Looking at the GBP/EUR exchange rate, there seems to be no
panic yet. The Sterling is at EUR 1.2961 to GBP 1 as of 23 May, 2016, stronger than this year low in April at 1.236. FTSE 100 is also doing alright at 6146 level as of 22 May, 2016, much higher than the 5537 low in February. Perhaps the market is pricing in Remain camp to win as of now. While the Remain camp has Obama, Donald Trump said a Brexit would make sense for Britons especially in the light of the craziness of the migration chaos. Trump’s election journey has been as unbelievable as Leicester City’s road to championship. His strongest card is immigration and his comments on building a great wall and a deportation force were jaw dropping. Trump has now only got Hilary Clinton between him and the White House. He is probably better at hosting reality TV than Hilary but Hilary has certainly spent more time as a politician than Trump. This is Harry Potter against Lord Voldemort in terms of experience. The world is changing and voters are different. It is more important to understand what voters want than what you have on the shelf. Amazon is conquering the retail market globally through understanding its customers better than most of his competitors. Its share price is at USD 702.8 as of 22 May, 2016. 5 years ago, it was below USD 200. Amazon market capitalization is USD 331.6 billion (GBP 229 billion) versus Wal-Mart at USD 219.3 billion (GBP 151 billion). Tesco market capitalization is GBP 13.3 billion. Amazon is branching out to all lines of business from its e-commerce nucleus. Good at dealing with big data gives them a world leading position in cloud computing. Knowing the customer tastes allow them to venture into private-label goods in food and household products, offering videos and other digital entertainment, clothing will come. Shipping to so many customers globally means building up their own delivery services and logistics operation. As the buy orders keep coming into Amazon.com, it looks like the buy orders for its shares also continue. If EU can run like Amazon, voters would probably have an easier decision on whether to stay or to go.

FITNESS WITH ALEX CASTRO
Overcoming Obstacles with Alex Castro
Alex Castro is one of London’s top personal trainers. With over ten years experience within the fitness industry, Alex trains his clients in the City alongside working at Barrys Bootcamp as an instructor at both their Euston and Moorgate branches. ensuring you explode out of the other side ready to continue on. The ability to change your body quickly from its upright position and to drive forward using all of your body parts will be essential. HIIT: Typically, there will be a part of the course which allows you to run (hopefully on a flat road) without obstacles. That’s not saying that some lunatic who designed the race won’t throw in something spicy, like, running through a river; or a tunnel; or even a river in a tunnel but nonetheless, this should allow you to turn on the engines and let the legs fly. Here, any sort of high intensity interval running training, whether on a treadmill (like at my very own Barry’s Bootcamp) or outdoor fartlek training using 200m and 400m intervals should be incorporated into your training to build up your base pace and to take advantage of those times when there are no obstacles stopping your momentum.
Have you become addicted to obstacle course races? I know I have. With new races forming all over the UK, you are more than likely to stumble across an advert or two with a crazy adrenaline pumping slogan and a person covered in mud trying their best to look like they’re having a great time. We are slowly becoming a country of mud race lovers who are seeking the next 10km obstacle course fix. Everyone knows a guy in the office who is giddy organising a team bonding event at one of these courses (Rob Caplan in my case) and telling everyone its easy compared to his Marathon des Sables effort. So, have you ever thought about how to train for such an event and what you can do beforehand which may benefit you during race time?
Training Go Off Road: Hitting the road or, should I say, your local woods is a great place to start. Races such as Tough Mudder are completely cross-country and consist of some really huge inclines. Although this is difficult for us Londoners, invest in heading out to Richmond Park, Hampstead Heath or Epping Forest; the more off-road you do, the better prepared you will be. Hang Out: A high proportion of the obstacles require upper body strength - whether this is monkey bars, Olympic rings, throwing yourself over 8ft walls, or rope climbing, you can certainly expect that you will need to engage your upper body to lift or move your entire body weight at some point on the course. Balancing Act: To mix things up and keep you on your toes (quite literally) a course will often test your ability to balance and keep the core engaged to ensure you don’t fall off or down something. You will be required to get low, perhaps onto your knees or onto your front at a moment’s notice and squeeze through an enclosed space,
Here are some circuits with a little more detail. Hope you like them as you may be doing them one day! Try using any of these simple yet tough circuits: 10 rounds: 10 Squats; 10 Push ups; 10 Reverse Lunges (each leg); 10 Pull ups. Simple lower to upper body circuit: 30 Squat jumps; Pull up hold for time (chin above the bar); 20 Box jumps; Pull up hold for time (chin above the bar); 10 Tyre flips (no tyre then a dead lift will mimic a similar movement) 5 rounds: 10 Over head walking lunges; 1 Weighted Prowler push; 10 Med ball slams; 1 Weighted Prowler push; 10 Burpees; 1 Weighted Prowler push. Adjust weight and tempo to your level. My advice is don’t go head first on any of the Circuits. Take your time focus on the form making sure every rep is a good one!

BERGERAC
Bergerac Dordogne Located in the picturesque Dordogne region in south-west France, Bergerac is not only favoured by wine lovers looking for the ultimate weekend break getaway, but also an increasingly popular destination for British second home owners. It comes as no surprise then, that British Airways has decided to not only provide the first direct air link from London City Airport, but to also run additional flights this summer.
Famed for its beautiful rolling vineyards and ancient towns, the Dordogne Périgord offers a wide variety of things to see and do, while the favourable weather conditions only add to the appeal. Rich in culture and heritage, car hire is advisable for those willing to explore further. Magnificent castles, manor houses and Romanesque churches and towers are all dotted around the countryside and in the many small towns making it easy to soak up the history. The region boasts 10 listed villages as well as three ‘Towns of Art and History’, placing it only second to the capital of Paris to have the largest number of listed historical monuments in the country. For those looking to explore the area in a more unique way, and a great way to burn off the calories so you can indulge in a little more wine and cheese, can opt to sail through the vineyards surrounding Bergerac and its beautiful countryside on an electric bike. Numerous tours are offered and it’s a great way to get around

and make the most of the weather with a little help on the hillier climes from an attached battery pack in the bike to give you a little push. If shopping is more your thing, then head to one of the many nearby towns. The Dordogne region is famed for its duck dishes, foie gras and goats cheese and the historical town of Sarlat’s bustling food market offers a wide variety for you to try. Just a short drive away from Sarlat, and the perfect place for a spot of lunch are the romantic Gardens of Marqueyssac. Listed
as a National Historical Monument, these stunning gardens offer more than 6 kilometres of shaded paths, edged with 150,000 handpruned boxwoods aged over one hundred years old. The château is a late 18th century residence, built on the eve of the French Revolution on the cliffs overlooking the Dordogne Valley. After extensive restoration work, the estate was first opened up to the public in 1997 and today is the most visited garden in the Aquitaine. Most recently the roof was replaced and is made from limestone slabs, which is typical of the region and weighs more than 300 tonnes. If you’re lucky on your tour of the gardens you may see one of the few majestic peacocks that live on the grounds! Try to head there in July or August to make the most of the candlelight night events where the gardens are beautifully lit for a stunning spectacle. Back below in the valley, and if you haven’t seen enough chateaus, or castles yet you can take to the Dordogne river on a traditional gabare boat tour from the village of La Roque Gageac and discover the valley of the castles. Lasting 55 minutes the tour gives you a fascinating insight to the history of the area, buildings and the men that once worked on the boats as fishermen.

One of the more recent historical discoveries in the Dordogne region is the Lascaux cave in Montignac. Discovered by four boys in September 1940, when one of the boys’ dog fell into a hole in the ground, the prehistoric cave was found to have some of the most impressive markings and paintings of herds of bulls, horses and cattle - now known as ‘the Great Hall of Bulls’ and ‘the Painted Gallery’. Although you can’t enter the original cave any more due to damage from bacteria; technological developments and scientific precision has made it possible to re-create, on the same hillside, the atmosphere of the most famous Palaeolithic sanctuary in the world, including every single marking. Tours of ‘Lascaux II grotteo’ are so popular that the cave will become the main part of a new complex just up the road ‘Centre International de l’Art Parietal Montignac-Lascaux’ that will focus on the entire reconstruction of the Lascaux cave and showcase the popularity of cave art thanks to the original workings and engravings found all those years ago by the boys. The tour is truly fascinating as much is still an ongoing process trying to find the answers as to how the cave was used and why such markings were created. Another cave of interest, should you wish to explore is in the village of Brantome. Fondly known as ‘The Venice of the Périgord’, thanks to its location surrounded by the river Dronne, the troglodytic site of the Abbey of Brantome is believed to have been inhabited by Benedictine monks in the 8th century. Back to Périgueux, and you can explore yet more history through the remains of this gallo-roman town. Merging medieval qualities with Renaissance style, the city is awash with narrow streets and pretty squares. There are plenty of markets to explore
and for lunch, be sure to stop at former Ritz Paris and Le Bristol chef, Thierry Pralong’s La Ferme Saint-Louis restaurant for some traditional Perigord cuisine such as truffles and foie gras, veal sweetbreads with cream sauce and woodland mushrooms. The outside terrace offers an ideal spot for some people watching while sampling the region’s fine wine. What better way to spend a weekend?
Staying there:
Chateau des Vigiers - Dating back to the 16th century, Chateau des Vigiers was acquired by Jean Vigier from the Duchess of La Rochefoucauld, Lady of Saussignac. Saussignac, at the time was a very large village and construction of the chateau began in 1597 by Vigier, who was a royal judge, before being completed by his daughter in 1621. Providing brilliant views and fondly known locally as ‘little Versailles’ due to its resemblance to the Chateau of Versailles, the chateau remained in the Vigier family until the French Revolution and in 1989 was transformed into the estate today. Offering a number of rooms in the main house, each decorated in keeping with the history of the chateau while also providing modern amenities you would expect; as well as in the ecofriendly ‘Relais’ building which has been created using traditional architecture of tobacco-drying barns; the hotel is perfect for families, groups and couples alike. Dining wise you won’t go without, and can experience some fabulous cuisine at the Michelin starred Les Fresques; or the nearby brasserie and terrace. Perfect after a long day on the golf

Mercure in Périgueux - For those looking for a more central location, the Mercure in Périgueux offers comfortable, clean rooms, with all amenities as well as a newly renovated bar and restaurant area providing an excellent base to explore the nearby area. Local attractions include Périgueux Cathedral, and the gallo roman Musee Vesunna that protects and enhances the remains of a great Gallo-Roman residence was built during the 2nd century AD and occupied up to the end of the 3rd century AD. Antigua and Barbuda
Much more than just sun, sea and sand...although all three are somewhat unavoidable.
The Caribbean, the tourist paradise, providing visitors with uninterrupted beaches and crystal clear waters. And it’s not just the sun that brings light and warmth to the region, the people radiate joy. Antigua is no exception to this with a seemingly endless party atmosphere across the island year round. Then again, it is easy to keep a smile on your face with an annual average temperature over 26°C and sea temperatures rarely falling below 25. Of course, sitting so close to the equator means that the island of Antigua is subject to tropical conditions and thus the inevitable rain shower. Luckily, you won’t be subjected to the miserable, icy drizzle we experience here, it will more often than not be a quick, warm shower, and you can always sit it out in one of the many bars and restaurants across the island. The island of Antigua offers an incredibly diverse destination, from the iconic white sandy beaches and turquoise ocean that the Caribbean is famed for to the dense jungle which remains in the south-west and bustling capital city, St. John’s which is home to over a third of the population. Not only are the environments diverse, so to are the activities available for you to enjoy whilst on the island. History has and will always play a big role in the Caribbean, but there are few places that this can be seen so prominently than the renovated cultural heritage site of Nelson’s Dockyard located in English Harbour on the south of the
island. As the name suggests, Admiral Horatio Nelson was based here overseeing the Navy’s work in and around the dangerous waters of the Caribbean towards the end of the 1700’s. The dockyard was abandoned by the British in 1889 and left to decay over more than 60 years before the Society of the Friends of English Harbour began restoration in 1951. Today, you can still take in some of the original buildings and features used during the Navy occupancy whilst indulging in a peruse around the museum to learn a little more about the incredible history of the marina and surrounding area. There are many artefacts and articles dating back to Nelson’s residency with a few personal items on show. Interestingly, the British came across this haven thanks to the forces of nature. English Harbour was first referenced in 1704 with Fort Berkeley becoming one of twenty forts around Antigua’s coastline, and the harbour was then utilised as a station for the Navy from around 1707, however there were no facilities for ship maintenance or repair. Then, in September 1723, a hurricane swept ashore 35 ships lying in other ports around Antigua while HMS Hector and HMS Winchelsea, both moored in English Harbour, escaped unscathed. From this, the harbour was considered a safe haven by the Navy and facilities were soon built to ensure it could be utilised to its full potential.

ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA
What makes this place so unique is how they have managed to restore the whole site, maintaining the historical appeal and appearance whilst providing a whole new space for Antigua to enjoy and demonstrate its modern ideas. And what better way than to host one of the Caribbean’s biggest and best sailing events, Antigua Sailing Week. Now held from the last Sunday in April every year and hailed as one of the top regattas in the world, Antigua Sailing Week will be celebrating its 50 year anniversary in 2017 with what is set to be a record attendance with teams competing from across the globe. Of course, being Antigua, this isn’t just about sailing, there are endless parties and ways to get involved throughout the event, largely focused in the historic English Harbour.
The 2016 event delivered a lot more than just sailing, with people on dry land taking advantage of events such as the Your World and Mine concert which brought together island residents, sailing competitors and fans and fortunate holiday makers who happened to find themselves in the middle of one of the biggest parties of the year second only to carnival. Bringing Luciano - one of Jamaica’s biggest reggae stars - to the stage along with the most incredible party atmosphere, the event showcases the epitome of island life whether you are a sailor or otherwise. You can enjoy some rum cocktails and barbecued fish whilst soaking up the Caribbean sounds, what better way to engross yourself in the lifestyle. Sailing has always been a big part of life in Antigua and the draw of Antigua Sailing Week is testament to the quality of sailing on offer in the surrounding waters. Thankfully, even if you are not an expert sailor, you can get involved with the event itself or simply enjoy some relaxed private sailing in one of the many calm bays surrounding the island. Nonsuch Bay Resort is just one of a handful of hotels who offer guests the opportunity to get out on the water in their own, albeit small, sailing boats. Furthermore, guests staying at the resort during sailing week can enjoy the event first-hand, getting involved with the Nonsuch Bay lay day which, of course, involves a party, this time on the beach with some sailing and other water-based activities thrown in for good measure. You can try your hand at competing if you can get yourself a team together and could find yourself up against Olympic athletes and world champions alike, all in the name of fun.

TRAVEL Away from sailing week there is still plenty to see and do. Sticking with the water theme, you can enjoy a day exploring the waters by kayak and powerboat with Antigua Nature Tours. Set out in a flat-bottom boat to the natural mangroves, jump in a kayak and take a gentle paddle through the complex system of waterways discovering some weird and wonderful creatures along the way. From ‘interesting’ sea cucumbers to magnificent orange cushion sea stars, you are sure to come across something you haven’t had the opportunity to touch before. Once you have had your fill of the mangrove ecosystem, it’s back on the boat to explore some of the small outlying islets such as Great Bird Island where you can get even closer to the marine life. Anchoring just offshore, you have the opportunity to do a spot of snorkeling over one of the best reefs Antigua has to offer complete with brain coral and an abundance of colourful fish before heading on to the island for a refreshing drink of either fruit or local rum punch. Measuring just 20 acres, smaller than most city parks, it is one of the only places on Earth where you can find an Antiguan racer in the wild, but don’t worry, these snakes are harmless. You will also find an abundance of bird life and a fantastic view from the top, perfect for a panoramic shot. If that’s not quite enough, you can combine the nature tour with a visit to ‘Stingray City’ where you can interact with wild rays whilst exploring the beautiful surrounding coral reef in a shallow white sand-bottomed natural pool.

ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA
If you venture away from the port you start to find some more genuine shops including some hidden gems like Fragolosa, a fantastic ice cream parlour, the perfect remedy to the hot midday sun. And when you’re finished with your visit to the big city, you can retire to your hotel for a lazy afternoon in the sun. Thanks to the size of Antigua, it is incredibly easy to get around. You can hire your own car if you fancy taking a tour around at your own pace, but it is so easy and cheap to get a taxi that you really don’t need to worry about all the hassle of hiring. Of course that does mean you can enjoy a few more rum cocktails too. There is no bad time to think about visiting Antigua, but if you wanted to take your time to organise the perfect trip, it will definitely be worth looking forward to the celebrations that will be undoubtedly big for Antigua Sailing Week’s 50th Anniversary next year. Head online or talk to your travel agent to work out the best possible way to make sure you can fit in everything you want, because you will need lots of time for partying...it is the national pastime. Even if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing break, there will be the odd occasion when you venture away from your hammock and out of the resort and get swept up in the party atmosphere, so be prepared to have a serious amount of fun.
If you are interested to learn more about the history of the island you should most certainly take a trip to Betty’s Hope. Here you will find the ruins of the largest of the sugar plantation estates which has received some restoration. One of the twin sugar mill towers and one of the buildings which now houses a small but incredibly educational museum have been restored to remember and educate people about the atrocities that took place during the slave trade and how they have shaped the vibrant Antigua you find today. Sugar mill ruins are dotted across the island with some adding unique features to more modern buildings through restoration, but all a stark reminder of the country’s history. Once you have explored the heritage sites and the countless pristine beaches, head to the capital St. John’s where you can immerse yourself in city life with shops and restaurants in abundance. The city is situated in the north-west of the island and features a harbour deep enough to accommodate large cruise ships, so the immediate vicinity around Heritage Quay is tailored to the cruise market where you will find duty free stores and endless souvenir shops and stalls with the standard tourist tat, but try and avoid if there is a ship in town.

Dalloway Terrace The newly opened Dalloway Terrace at The Bloomsbury Hotel has launched a perfectly timed Afternoon Tea for guests to make the most of the warmer weather, or hide from the rain, on the beautiful indoor-outdoor terrace which is nestled in the heart of Bloomsbury. Anna Russell, Duchess of Bedford in the 1830s and a former resident of Bloomsbury’s Bedford Square, is credited with first transforming ‘Afternoon Tea’ into a formal social occasion. The Duchess found taking an afternoon snack to be such a perfect refreshment that she soon began inviting her friends to join her. Afternoon Tea quickly became established and was welcomed into many middle and upper class households. Dalloway Terrace, named after the eponymous character created by Virginia Woolf, an author whose name will forever be associated with Bloomsbury, is delighted to be continuing this quintessentially British tradition in the area. The classic afternoon tea has carefully been prepared by Pastry Chef Mariatu Kargbo. Mariatu recently joined the team at Dalloway Terrace, bringing with her a wealth of pastry experience, from a number of formidable establishments, including The Dorchester, The Lanesborough and The Berkeley. Highlights include smoked salmon & crab rillette served with the signature Guinness bread, smoked corn-fed chicken in brioche, Bloomsbury brownie, Mascarpone & saffron meringue, Cambridge burnt cream and freshly baked plain & sultana buttermilk scones. The Afternoon Tea is priced at £30.00 per person, £35.00 per person with a glass of English Sparking wine, or £40 per person with a glass of Perriet-Jouet Champagne. The offering is available from 12noon to 6pm daily. Call 020 7347 1221 for reservations. dallowayterrace.com

COCKTAIL COLUMN
Zoran’s Mixology Masterclass
with Zoran Peric
Zoran Peric is a cocktails and spirits expert with a background in launching and managing some of London’s top bars such as the Soho Hotel. He has also worked with some of the country’s leading drinks brands, working with them to develop their brand and drinks concepts.
is great for lounging back and enjoy the ambiance and in the summer months there is a beautiful courtyard where you can relish in the London sunshine; whilst here I recommend trying the Pitchfork made from Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Tokaji, Cynar, Bulls Blood infused Dolin Blanc Vermouth and lemon oil. This Father’s Day is looking to be a sun-filled one, so the stronger flavours found in some of these classic cocktails might not suit your mood. If that is the case, then there is nothing stopping you from throwing caution to the wind by turning every day favourites into new and innovative sunshine spritzs. These drinks are best when they are kept simple. Great examples of this is whisky topped with soda and of course the old faithfuls like a gin and tonic. In keeping with putting a modern twist to serves such as these I recommend the Patrón and Tonic. Gin and Tonic is one of the most quintessentially British summer drinks, and with the Patrón and Tonic, you get all the elements that you would enjoy from a G&T; rich herbaceous flavour, citrusy notes, deep peppery spicy finish. We add an orange peel at the end as it binds all the flavours together and provides beautiful aroma from squeezing out the essential oils from the orange. It’s the small elements likes this that makes a great long drink and this particular serve is easy to make at home. Another one of my favourite summer serves is the Trans-Siberian Spritz, made with 50ml Beluga Noble vodka in a highball glass, 30ml rhubarb & red fruits cordial, 10ml Galliano Apertivo, topped with 45ml Brut Champagne. This simple summer spritz is refreshing and delicious, it also looks a bit more elaborate than the recipe suggests, so you can really impress your loved ones with your mixology skills. Believe it or not, tradition has it that fathers were given the gift of a white or red rose on Father’s Day, as such the rose is the official flower of the day. To honour the tradition, I have recommended the Beluga Collins cocktail which creates a beautiful rose coloured serve; 40ml Beluga Noble Vodka, 20ml freshly squeezed lemon juice, 20ml Elderflower syrup, two drops of grapefruit bitters and topped up with soda water. Whichever way you decide to celebrate Father’s Day this year, round it off with a toast of something delicious to honour the old man in your life.
As we welcome June, we welcome the time-honoured celebration of Father’s Day. My children are still too young, but believe me, when they come of age, for me, there would be no better way to celebrate the day of the dad than spending some one-on-one time with them over a perfect Father’s Day tipple. It should come as no surprise that in my line of work my team and I absolutely love celebrations with a strong focus. It allows us to dive into our cocktail archives and pull out old favourites that truly embody the energy, tradition and soul of traditional occasions and festivities. With a day dedicated to the paternal figures in our lives I automatically think of the classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned, Tom Collins and Rusty Nails. With the revival of these retro cocktails, I like to create new and modern takes on them, incorporating their iconic tastes with something you wouldn’t normally think of, to make a really personalised and special serve. A favourite of mine is called the “Chocolate Fashioned” it contains 40ml of whisky, 15ml of Pedro Ximénez, 1 drop of chocolate bitters (Mozart Dark), stir in a glass over ice and finish with orange zest. By taking inspiration from the classic Old Fashioned and incorporating a delicious chocolate element, the serve becomes an indulgent treat. London has been my home for the best part of 20 years and what I love most, is that just beyond your doorstep is a plethora of award-winning cocktails bars and a constant stream of new and exciting openings. One bar that I think will be loved by sons and fathers is Chiltern Firehouse. It has such a nice and welcoming feel which

JAPANESE WHISKY
Sexy Fish Whisky Flights The popularity of Japanese whisky has only recently begun to increase despite the first commercial production leaving Suntory’s Yamazaki distillery in the 1920’s. Consumption remained largely domestic until the early 2000’s when awareness of the incredible whiskies on offer started to spread like wildfire. Now, the offering is such that countless awards are won on a yearly basis by the Suntory group pitched against the finest Scotch counterparts. And this is, in part, down to the meticulous practice that the Japanese distillers employ ensuring a precise process from beginning to end. You can pass judgement as you please, many Scotch whisky lovers remain weary of the Japanese enslaught, however you may wish to try a comparison first, you might have a pleasant surprise. If you are interested in learning more about Japanese whisky, then there really is no place better - in Europe at least - than the spectacular bar at Sexy Fish. With magnificent origami style fish floating above you, the bar offers the biggest collection of Japanese Whisky in Europe for you to enjoy. What’s more, they have just launched their exclusive Japanese Whisky Flights allowing you to delve as deep as you like into the exciting world of whisky from the East. Executive Bars Manager for the Caprice Group, Xavier Landais has built a vast collection, but the job is only getting harder as the small production numbers of older whiskies begin to dwindle. He says: ‘It’s become a kind of addiction since I first discovered how unique and impressive Japanese whisky was. I realised that there were many people who shared this passion, and so our collection just grew and grew, and now we are proud to own the largest in Europe.” They now offer the ‘First Sip’ flight which includes four whiskies First Sip Whisky Flight £21.00 and is a great foray into Vertical Hibiki Whisky Flight £90.00 the world of the Japanese
spirit. However, if you want to truly discover its secrets, you should spread your wings and sample the Vertical Hibiki flight. A journey through the Hibiki collection, the flight includes five whiskies from the incredible Hibiki Japanese Harmony through to the “World’s Best Blended Whisky’, Hibiki 21 year old and rich Hibiki 30 year old. This is a fantastic way to indulge in a little education whilst enjoying some of the world’s best whiskies. And once you’re an expert, you can venture into their other flight options which include rare bottlings that are no longer in production, so once they are gone, they are gone.

ROKA With four sites across London, Rainer Becker’s ROKA restaurants have extended the success of the Zuma chain offering fantastic robatayaki cuisine. ROKA is a meeting place where food and drinks are shared with friends (ro) and heat, warmth and an all-embracing energy surround (ka) and the Canary Wharf restaurant certainly lives up to it. Focused around the central robata grill, you can enjoy an exquisite menu in a range of settings from the relaxed kitchen-side bar to the open, high ceilinged restaurant. Or you could even enjoy the terrace for some late afternoon cocktails or weekend brunch which has become a firm favourite with locals and visitors to Canary Wharf alike. As an introduction to the restaurant it is definitely worth opting for the tasting menu or better still, the ultimate tasting menu which delivers a range of dishes from across the menu ensuring
you get to try some dishes from the sushi and sashimi, tempura and robata menus. What’s more, the ultimate tasting menu offers some of the restaurants signature dishes, so you will more often than not want to try it anyway. Once you’ve become a regular - which you will - you can make a more educated choice from the full menu, but for £85, you won’t find as varied, filling and enjoyable collection of dishes. The contrast between the fresh, clean flavours from the sushi and sashimi dishes and the succulent, intense flavour from the robata grill make for an engaging and delicious experience which is only aided by beautiful presentation. If you are looking for a relaxed yet premium restaurant experience, you won’t find many places more inviting than this, and if you happen to be in Canary Wharf at the weekend you can take full advantage of the free-flowing sushi starters...just remember to loosen the belt.

King Crab Royale at One-O-One Adjacent to Hyde Park and just two minutes’ walk from Knightsbridge Tube Station, multi award winning One-O-One is widely acclaimed as one of the finest seafood restaurants in London and in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s ninetieth birthday, Executive Chef Pascal Proyart has created a very special dish - the ‘King Crab Royale’. Pascal spent his childhood on the Brittany coast where he developed a lifelong love for fish and seafood and he is extremely passionate about using fresh, sustainable ingredients in all his dishes. He is recognised as one of the finest chefs in the UK and is brand ambassador for the Norwegian Seafood Council. Situated inside the Park Tower Knightsbridge Hotel, the restaurant maintains a formal yet relaxed atmosphere. You have to go through a cocktail bar to reach the elegant dining room with its comfortable chairs and understated lighting. Here you are greeted by the ever attentive staff who are extremely well mannered and professional and there is always someone at hand to attend to any requirements you may have. Once settled, you can sit back and savour the delicious seaweed butter along with your freshly baked rolls and enjoy the extremely impressive ‘King Crab Royale’ as your starter. This exquisite masterpiece uses only the finest ingredients and the star of the dish is the Norwegian King Crab. Beautifully presented in the shape of a crown with touches of gold leaf, it
is perfectly complemented by seasonal British asparagus, quail’s egg topped with caviar, wild garlic and dressed with rhubarb and lemon. Although One-O-One is primarily a seafood restaurant there are numerous other options such as Surrey farm beef fillet or Spring lamb fillet also on offer. However, if you want to make the most of your visit and would like to try a bit of both, an excellent choice would be the Surf and Turf. Consisting of lobster, king crab, generous slices of beef fillet, carrot, asparagus, bisque and pinot noir this delightful and inventive dish does not disappoint. The usual sides of pommes frites, buttered mash, baby spinach and wild mushrooms amongst others are also available. What to choose for dessert is a difficult decision but with dishes such as the lime parfait, ginger ice cream, salted caramel, spiced bread and meringue or the lemon posset, passion fruit, raspberry, champagne jelly and sorbet to tantalise your taste buds you can’t go wrong. Every dish Pascal and his team creates is a visual masterpiece and truly delicious. The King Crab Royale is perfection itself and what better way to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s landmark birthday as the UK’s longest reigning monarch? The King Crab Royale is available until 18th June and priced at £21. Prices vary for menu options but check out the website for special offers.

The tempting menu is overseen by Executive Chef Crispin Chetwynd, a culinary legend of sorts who has spent time touring the globe with the likes of Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson and Pink Floyd. The varied, seasonally-changing menu focuses on the very best local produce from producers such as The Ginger Pig and H. Forman & Sons. Light bites on petite plates include burnt
aubergine baba ghanoush peppered with pomegranate seeds and sumac; thrice-fried chicken with shichimi mayonnaise; and ham hock croquettes with aioli. With other branches in Soho and Kensington, main dishes include such as the Infamous Balans Burger and the 12oz sirloin steak with double-dipped chips and bourbon BBQ sauce; as well as new dishes such as grilled halloumi on olive mash with cherry tomatoes and lemon honey dressing; and skillet-roasted chicken with farro, fig and pine nuts. Providing the ‘cherry on top’ of your meal, decadent desserts include High Society Mess to share, compete with sparklers; and Banoffie Pie with toffee sauce and warm doughnuts with cinnamon apple compote and whipped cream. You wouldn’t truly be enjoying Balans if you didn’t wash it all down with one of their fantastic cocktails. Classics include the Elderflower Collins (Broker’s gin, St. Germain, apple); to the Society Teddy Bear (Buffalo Trace, cinnamon, cranberry) served in a honey bear bottle. The new interior is thanks to Simon Costin, who has previously worked creating shows for Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney, and continues the theme of mischief with a mix of vintage and modern books, dolls, board games and musical instruments. You may notice a leafless tree in the middle of the room, which as you will find with much of Balans, is there just because. Be sure to head out onto the new 70 cover Terrace. Partially covered, the all-weather area is beautifully decorated with hanging lights, heaters, trees and plants aplenty. Ideal for long lunches, or post dinner drinks.

REVIEW
#blossomcity D&D London have launched their #blossomcity campaign across the capital, creating unique offerings in each of their equally unique drinking and dining establishments. From a Mayfair garden afternoon tea at Quaglino’s to the Jungle Book Summer Terrace at Old Bengal Bar, there are plenty of bright, blossoming places to enjoy the start of those long summer nights. One offering that is not to be missed is Canary Wharf based Plateau’s collaboration with Cadenzza, the designer jewellery boutique. Available until the end of June (as with the rest of #blossomcity), Plateau’s six course Blossom City tasting menu delivers an eye-catching array of dishes, each worthy of a social media hashtag of its own. The menu can be enjoyed with your own drink choices or as a wine paired meal offering a selection of wines from Italy, Spain, Australia and of course France, each of which accentuating the flavours of their corresponding dish. As you would imagine, the Blossom City tasting menu is a light yet indulgent dining experience and as such, each of the wines continues this theme with the vast majority being fresh, chilled, crisp white wines, perfect at the end of a hot day. Don’t be fooled however, although the dishes and wines may appear innocuous, by the time you reach the pièce de résistance you will appreciate the value received for your £60.00 (£85.00 with wine). The menu begins with a white tomato velouté and Plateau gin fizz to prepare you palate for the delights to come, but it is not merely a precursor, the dish is beautifully presented and immediately illustrates the menus intent to live up to the hashtag campaign. There are then two options for the starter, second course and main, being either the meat or vegetarian choice. Ignore any preconceptions about the vegetarian option as it is just as fulfilling and enjoyable as its meat-based counterpart. It is certainly worth mixing between the two even if it is to simply admire the sheer beauty that the presentation brings. Each dish
features hints of floral detail, some with taste implications, but on the whole to support the experience, and it works. To start you can choose between seared Orkney scallop with oyster and lettuce velouté, lovage and almonds and the garden vegetable salad with black olive, rocket and homemade soya ricotta. Both dishes are exquisitely presented with delicate positioning of the fresh and bright garden salad. You can then follow with either the duck and foie gras terrine with rhubarb, ginger and nasturtium flowers or indulge in the Jersey Royal risotto with poached egg, broad beans and cornish leaves - even if you enjoy the rich flavours that duck and foie gras provide, it wouldn’t be the worst choice to go with the risotto on this one. The main event - which turns out not to be the main event - is a choice between rose veal rump with broad beans, asparagus and smoked potato or spring vegetable tart with quinoa, goats curd and espelette pepper and the choice really is up to you on this, they are both delicious and equally enjoyable to look at, so unless you are allergic to any of the ingredients or are a vegetarian, this will be the hardest decision you will have to worry about. Once you have conquered the main course, a delightful gin jelly resting atop a sharp lemon mousse is delivered to the table to freshen your palate and prepare you for the true main event… dessert. ‘A basket of blossom surprises’ is exactly as it sounds. This truly exceptional dessert not only shows off some impressive pastry skills, but is a delight to look at and will give you more than enough to try and finish. Refreshing citrus flavours are juxtaposed with rich chocolate ganache all under the guise of an innocent picnic basket resting on a meadow in summer bloom. It is the perfect way to finish you meal which is made even better by the delivery of a special surprise courtesy of Cadenzza, but you will have to enjoy it for yourself to find out what is hiding in yet more floral displays.

HARRODS WINE
The Oenophilist
with Edward Gerard, Wine Buyer for Harrods
Edward Gerard started his career cycling cases of fine wine round the SW1 and SW3 postcodes. Some 13 years later after a stint in the USA, and having extensively traveled and tasted his way around the wine world he finds himself with the enviable job of selecting the vast range available in the Wine Rooms at Harrods.
For the purpose of my June article I am going to make a bold and unfounded assumption and that is summer will finally take hold!!! Ever the optimist I have already stocked up my wine storage with wines that are prefect for warm summer days of picnics and barbeques. Whiling away the long summer evenings sharing a bottle of wine with friends and loved ones is one of life’s great pleasures and so I wanted to take this opportunity and highlight some of my favourites from The Wine Room at Harrods. I predict that once again Prosecco will form the Sparkling wine of choice for the nation this summer and I can’t blame anyone from making this decision as in its finest guise Prosecco can be utterly delicious, unfortunately with its rise in demand we have seen a rise in the plethora of substandard plonk hitting the shelves across the country. In my fridge is the delicious Villa Marcello Prosecco Brut, with exquisitely pure notes of pear, cox apple and acacia blossom this is a perfect welcome drink to any summer occasion. The first white wine that I have at the ready is the wonderfully aromatic 2014 Verdejo from Bodegas Protos in Rueda Spain. This is a wine that way over delivers on its £11.95 price tag with aromas of apple blossom, lavender and honeysuckle combining with stone fruit notes and pink grapefruit. On the palate this white is wonderfully balanced with good weight but also a fresh acidity and a very long finish. It will make a great accompaniment to many summer dishes. If you want to push the boat out for a special occasion this summer then I
highly recommend Domaine Borgeot’s wonderfully made 2014 Chassagne Montrachet Vielles Vignes that combines clear and clean notes of nectarines and orange blossom with limestone minerality true to the terroir of this revered village in the Cotes du Beaune. As for a red I have stocked up on two core wines this summer. Firstly I’m an advocate for a chilled red wine, especially on warm summer days. This year there is one wine in our range that is just perfect for this and it is the 2014 Bajondillo from Bodegas JimenezLandi, which is light to medium bodied with fabulous pure notes of fresh raspberries and red cherries mixed with subtle notes of wild herbs and violets, at £11.95 this represents brilliant value and chilled it will go down a treat with your guests at many a summer occasion. If like me you are a fan of barbequing a big hunk of red meat then you will require a red wine with a bit more power and structure and so this year I have chosen to fill the rest of my wine storage with a brilliant Portuguese wine called Vinha Grande Tinto, which is made in the Douro valley by the fine folk at Casa Ferreirinha. The 2013 is chock full of dark berry fruit and mocha notes with hints of cedar and lavender in the background; it is rich and full bodied with a long, satisfying and harmonious finish that makes me want to dust off the grill just writing about it. All of the wines above can be found in the Harrods Summer Wines Selection and are available in The Wine Rooms on the Lower Ground floor as well as Harrods.com.

REVIEW
Dickie Fitz Located on the corner of Newman and Goodge Street in the heart of Fitzrovia, Dickie Fitz is a modern day brasserie that opened earlier this year. Full of fresh flavours and inspired by the Pacific, the modern menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner have been created by Sydney-born Executive Chef Matt Robinson, formerly of Bluebird, Skylon, maze, Boxwood and The Criterion, and are accompanied by a carefully crafted New World cellar, Australian gin and beer, and an Asian-influenced cocktail list.
Light and airy, this beautifully modern Art Deco influenced restaurant with its high ceilings, stunning lighting and upstairs dining area is a great place to catch up with friends over cocktails, take meetings with colleagues or even enjoy a spot of bottomless brunch and Sunday feasting. Starters on the a la carte menu include the deliciously moreish Truffle ‘macancini’ a true must try of the menu; fresh Tuna tataki, avocado and ponzu; and Beef tartare, egg yolk and sourdough. Moving on to mains fish fans can enjoy Halibut with yuzu hollandaise and lobster with wild garlic and chilli from the Robata Grill. Whereas meat lovers won’t be disappointed with dishes such as Lamb leg and belly, tabbouleh, pea and yuzu; the homemade Rib burger with Jack cheese, house sauce and pickle from the Robata Grill; and for vegetarians Baked eggplant, tofu, edamame and miso. There is a wide selection of sides too from Cabbage and Parmesan salad to Fries with chicken salt. Dessert, if you can manage it, is in keeping with the fresh theme and perfect for summer with the likes of sharing mango, pineapple and passionfruit Pavlova; and Mrs Robinson’s Lamingtons – an Australian speciality where sponge cake is coated with chocolate and rolled in desiccated coconut. It’s also worth noting that Dickie Fitz boasts a very impressive cheese selection which can be enjoyed with water crackers, apricot, and champagne chutney. Australian truffle season starts this June and the restaurant will be serving a special truffle tasting menu celebrating the delicacy from Western Australia.

your Brand New 1961 Mercedes 190 SL Fully restored from the engine out, this is one seriously good looking Mercedes that is worth a minute or two of admiration. The Mercedes specialist responsible stripped the entire car, engine included to ensure the best possible finish was achieved, and now you have the opportunity to own it for yourself. And it comes with a soft-top now that the sun is out...
JAGUAR XE PORTFOLIO
Taking on the Germans Jaguar launch their attack on the sports saloon market which has been reignited and ruled by the German marques...until now.
Introducing the first aluminium monocoque structure to the sector thanks to Jaguar’s modular aluminium architecture, the XE is the first mid-size car that the British marque have produced since the last of the X-Type’s back in 2009. The new production method, now featuring across the model range, provides Jaguar with the ability to facilitate both rear and all-wheel drive systems with minimal impact on the production process. Not only that, but it also delivers improvements in performance thanks to increased structural integrity aiding the cars performance through cornering. The XE was the first model to feature Jaguar’s new architecture which has moved the company into a new era of production. Previously relying on Ford derived platforms, the shift opens the door to new, exciting projects which will certainly be in the pipeline, but first-off, we already have one to enjoy. This all new
model brings a package which has taken note of its big sister’s success in the luxury saloon market and has brought the fight to the slightly smaller and more agile sport saloon segment. You will still find key aesthetic queues which have become synonymous with the latest evolution of the Jaguar brand including the large open front grille, however the XE has received a considerable amount of work in developing new features such as the sleek light clusters on both the front and rear of the car. Exterior styling of the XE maintains a level of sophisticated luxury that returned to the Jaguar name with the introduction of the XF but adds a sporty edge thanks to a contoured back end and those sleek lights. It is great to see the brand continuing its fight to attract a younger customer base and the XE will having nothing but a positive impact on their quest. jaguar.co.uk

YOUR DRIVE The front-end features the aggressive front grille and sleek cutout lights which produce powerful lines running up the bonnet and create imposing angles over the front wheel arches. The theme continues to the rear with a slender profile featuring slim windows which increase the appearance of sportiness whilst maintaining a relatively high roof-line for better interior space. Once you reach the rear, the low, wide stance is supported by the slim rear lights and subtle boot lip to complete the sporty hints of design. On the inside, Jaguar have done a lot of work to improve on what was becoming an outdated interface, and what better place than on a new model. As a driver, the infotainment system has been made much easier to use whilst driving with fewer options and clearer menus. Despite this, the functionality remains the same. ‘InControl Touch’ with its 8 inch touch-screen features intuitive touch and swipe controls to command audio settings, satellite navigation, climate control and bluetooth options including use of hands-free and bluetooth devices as media devices to play your favourite tunes straight from your phone.
You also have the option to select the required sub-menu from oversized buttons which sit either side of the touch-screen improving the ease of selection and reducing the time spent looking at the screen. Sitting neatly below the touch-screen system are additional dual-zone climate controls including the heated seat option, all presented across two clean lines of buttons which feature stylish blue light-bars producing a striking appearance at night. You will also find the keyless start/stop button sitting symmetrically to the power/ volume knob for the media system, again supported by a highlighting blue line. It is a luxurious offering considering the price tag starts at just under £33,000 and is continued through the rest of the cabin. Soft, fine-grain Windsor leather adorns the seats with herringbone perforation to support the heated and ventilated seat functionality and unique Portfolio styling whilst the dash receives a Cuir grain wrap with tonal stitching adding to the luxury appearance. The front seats provide 10-way electrical adjustment allowing you to create the perfect positioning for comfort and support.

JAGUAR XE PORTFOLIO
Once you’re sitting comfortable, you can begin to enjoy the cars performance on the road. There is an ‘S’ option which sits above the Portfolio trim delivering 340 PS from Jaguar’s impressive 3.0-litre V6 supercharged engine and a sub 5 second zero to sixty time, however, the 2.0-litre diesel option - with 180 PS and sub 8 second 0-60mph time - provides incredible efficiency whilst still giving the same composure through cornering. Utilising the monocoque structure means that the cars strength is improved whilst weight is reduced, automatically improving the performance of the car regardless of what engine you put under the bonnet, however the 2.0-litre diesel boasts an impressive combined fuel consumption of 67.3 mpg and CO2 emissions of just 109 g/km. The handling is excellent, sure-footed and responsive able to accommodate aggressive driving if necessary or desired, and it is once again not reserved for the top ‘S’ model. The sophisticated front and rear suspension systems use advanced damper technologies, both passive and adaptive, to improve ride quality and increase the dynamic capability of the XE and allow it to live up to the sport saloon title. XE also brings torque vectoring to the table further increasing its cornering ability and control by using independent braking on the individual inside front and rear wheels. Not only does this help in even the tightest of corners, but adds to your driving confidence knowing that there’s an extra bit of support on when on the road. On the theme of control, you also jaguar.co.uk

have the option through the JaguarDrive Control system to select four different drive modes to suit your requirements. Normal, Eco, Dynamic or Rain Ice Snow modes each subtly alter the steering and throttle mapping to encourage fuel efficient driving in Eco mode or sharpened throttle response and increased steering weighting in Dynamic for a sportier drive. A very useful option for the great British weather is the Rain Ice Snow mode which automatically dampens acceleration and applies more gradual traction for slippery conditions to ensure you stay on the road in less desirable conditions. The XE is a fantastic addition to the Jaguar offering and has certianly taken the lead from the award winning XF. There will be plenty more to come from this sleek saloon, but for now, it is more than worth a look if you are in the market for a smaller car in a saloon package. Few of its competitors from the continent offer the same level of driving experience and quality of finish in such a stylish and luxurious package. Jaguar have a considerable amount to prove thanks to their resurgance in the premium market and are doing everything in their power to ensure their efforts are recognised. The XF was the beginning and the XE is clearly the next chapter in the story. Already well received and acquiring great acclaim across the motoring world, the sports saloon market has found a new competitor to the German superpowers and they have their work cut out to try and better it.

SAVILLS
Furnishing Your Dreams
with Natasha Hasson, Interior Coordinator at Savills Interior Services As with all walks of life, never underestimate the power of a first impression when selling or letting your property. Regardless of the market conditions, a well presented property almost always performs more strongly than its less smart counterparts, especially when there are plenty of other properties on the market and thus more choice for prospective buyers. In the first instance, try to make sure your property stands out from the crowd to increase its chances of being noticed quickly by the right buyers or tenants, rather than fade into the background behind other more striking options. It is well worth spending the time and money to update your property, as this is likely to help you achieve a stronger price after a shorter period of marketing. Keep it relevant and up to date, too; you want to attract the buyers of 2016, rather than those of past eras. In the 1960s, for example, avocado green bathroom suites were all the rage, but now they can be a turn off for prospective buyers and tenants. Each year brings many fresh ideas in our homes. Particularly noticeable at the moment is the combination of contemporary interiors with traditional patterns. Many new properties in recent years have been rather modern and minimalistic in character, yet now designers seem to be injecting character into the existing modern interiors, with bold tiles, wallpapers and furniture, as well as practical multifunctional designs for our busy lives. Most property owners, as we would recommend, are continuing to keep things fairly neutral overall when furnishing their properties so as to maintain a wide appeal to others; with many hues of grey, white and black. You can offset this neutrality with bold furniture choices and feature walls, either wallpapered or painted, to add character and interest to the property, while remaining open to many different peoples’ tastes and preferences. Geometric tiles are also popular, predominantly in kitchens and bathrooms, but also now appearing in hallways to create a striking first impression. These reflect the more fluid movement often inspired by the traditional features of Victorian and Tudor buildings, such as the patterned floor tiles that remain in a number of Victorian properties in conservation areas of South West London. Of course, larger and more structural features can also make a strong impact. Architectural staircases, such as cantilever or glider Savills Richmond | 020 7578 9939 | savills.co.uk

COLUMN staircases, create a focal point out of something which, in essence, is very functional. These can often use up less space and make the entrances feel more open. A particularly striking example is the glass staircase in the studio house on Upper Cheyne Row, connecting two galleries on either side of the building, whilst not blocking any light to the rooms behind it but also drawing the eye. In essence, make sure your is property memorable and the best in its class. Ensure you use good quality furnishings adding these touches of interest with furniture, decorations and artwork, in order to set your property apart and attract interest. It is character like this which transforms a house into a home and evokes far more emotion for the applicants when viewing it than empty rooms and walls ever can.

Planting for Scent in your Summer Garden with Kate Gould
Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer with more than a decade’s hands-on experience transforming gardens of all sizes and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where she has been awarded three Gold medals. If you would like to know more about our services please contact Kate at kategouldgardens.com
Scent is a highly emotive sense. The scent of Sweet Peas immediately takes me back to my Nans garden in Wales in the early 1980’s, the smell of fresh grass is the smell of summer and Pittosporum tobira or ‘Mock Orange’ is quite simply the quintessential scent of holidays. You might not know the plant but I bet you know its scent. It is surprising therefore that we do not plant more for scent in the garden since we can be transported back to a place or time with hopefully happy thoughts and memories at the mere whiff of a Rose, Honeysuckle or Jasmine. These particular plants are well known for their scent but there are others too, equally as sweetly scented that flower at different times through the summer and into the autumn and should we ever be able to get back out into our gardens in this, the
wettest of droughts we are experiencing these plants would delight the senses for months to come. Some you may know and others might come as a bit of a surprise, but here are ten of the best. There are of course many other scented plants to choose from; Lavender, Rosemary, Honeysuckle, Tobacco plants, Mirabilis jalapa, Oenothera (Evening primrose), Magnolia grandiflora, Sweet peas, Lilac, Stocks, Sweet Williams all of which are worth a place in the modern garden, no matter how old fashioned the flower. The different cultural requirements of these plants means that they will need to be sited in different parts of the garden depending on the aspect and climatic conditions. The only condition on your part is to place a seat nearby so you can sit, inhale and enjoy.

Ten of the best for scent:
Clematis flammula - This is one of the latest of the flowering Clematis, often into early October and one of the best scented; a sort of vanilla meets hedgerow scent – unusual and delightful at the same time. To say that it flowers in abundance is an understatement. It is a plant where you can hardly see the plant for the flowers when it is in full pelt. A clean bright white on a plant that will happily grow 10-15 feet from May to October it is one best kept for the back of the border or to grow up something that has past its best by the end of the year. In my garden it festoons a rather sad looking Lilac and is grown with graceful grasses and Eupatorium rugosum as an accompaniment, which extend the colour in the garden into October and beyond. Its beautiful silky seed heads are simply an added bonus.
Rhododendron viscosum - A plant of graceful beauty with delicate white flowers that are scented like cloves and fragrance the air for many meters around. A shady border and acidic soil are its main requirements and given these it will flower in early June with gusto. Acer and Hosta varieties make for pleasing planting companions as does and underskirt of Tiarella ‘Ninja’ with its foamy pink blooms. Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’ - Ok, so it can get a bit of blackfly and it is pretty rangy in appearance if it isn’t pruned correctly but this is summer to me. Planted in my garden where it catches the last of the sun it is place I gravitate to in late June to soak up its scent. Its flowers are pretty too; white with a peachy / blush eye and usually in profusion. A fairly undemanding plant and fairly uninteresting at other times of the year but the scent is out of this world.
Lilium regale - Clean white trumpets with yellow throats are held above slender stems in mid summer. Easily grown from bulbs or propagated from bulbils (mini bulbs on the stems of the plant) or even seed these plants scent the air, especially at night with a deep rich fragrance. To produce this deep rich scent a deep rich soil is best. This will produce a tall and well-trumpeted plant but these lilies are also happy in a generous pot on the terrace where they can be moved into position to be enjoyed at their peak. Lily Beetle, probably the best dressed pest in the garden in its scarlet coat is a scourge of lilies and it and its larvae which are attached to the plant in a rather unattractive manner of which I shall not go into detail about should be dealt with as you see fit (there are chemicals on the market if you aren’t particularly hands on with pests). Get to them early and your lilies will be fine. Leave it too late and you will be left with stunted bulbs and a problem for next year too.
Hesperis matronalis - ‘Sweet Rocket’ is well named. Its scent is so sweet that some people think it a little ‘gone over’ but it is another plant that perfumes the air for meters around itself on a warm day and is best towards the evening when it has been warmed by the sun. In full sun or partial shade with moist ground at its roots its mauve or white flowers brighten a border and combine well with foxgloves and Euphorbia varieties. Hesperis is easily grown from seed although it is biennial so it will not flower until its second year. Rosa ‘Scepter’d Isle’ - Everyone has a favourite rose so this inclusion could raise a few eyebrows but this particular rose is my favourite for scent. A shrub rose of the prettiest softest pink with a strong traditional rose scent and hints of spicy Myrrh and all the better since it happily repeat flowers throughout the summer (it has won awards for its fragrance so I cant be that wrong).
Cercidiphyllum japonicum - Perhaps one out of left field here since it is not flowers but foliage that provide the scent. This doesn’t occur until the heart shaped green leaves transform into fiery red, gold and purple shades before dropping from the tree in the autumn. It is then that you can be forgiven for thinking that a travelling fair has set up camp in your garden. There is nothing in the plant kingdom that smells quite as much like the burnt sugary scent of Candyfloss as a Cercidiphyllum. It is an ephemeral scent as once dropped the leaves have a matter of days before they lose their potency. For best results a mildy acidic soil is required and some shelter from strong winds to allow the tree to reach is eventual height of about 15m.
Tracheleospermum jasminoides and Jasminum officinale - Chinese Jasmine (an evergreen) and ordinary Jasmine (semi evergreen, if you are lucky) are both powerfully scented climbers with white starry flowers. Both benefit from a sunny spot, although the Tracheleospermum will flower in the shade but is never as floriferous or as scented. A warm wall and a sheltered spot aid the fragrance. Try growing them both over a pergola near the house or near an outside dining table and enjoy their scent in mid summer. The Tracheleospermum will need a more sheltered spot as it is slightly tender.
Phlox paniculata - This is perhaps one the best known and loved cottage garden plants and it is absolutely worthy of that title. Highly scented, masses of blooms and a good mid border stalwart Phlox is worth its weight in many a garden from July to early November. The older varieties are often plagued with mildew but given a ground that doesn’t dry out too much and a really good mulch and feed in the spring this can usually be avoided or at least averted. For added scented punch combine with Monarda, Nepeta and Hemerocallis lilioasphedolus. There is Phlox to suit all tastes from the blousy Phlox paniculata L. ‘Amethyst’ to the eminently refined and elegant Phlox paniculata ‘David’ with its bright white blooms that shine on a moonlit night.
Dianthus ‘Mrs Sinkins’ - Cloves in abundance is the scent here on a small perennial with grey green leaves and pretty white, slightly tattered looking flowers. The garden pink is a long way from its cousin the un-scented florists Carnation and planted in a dry soil or in a rock garden it will flower through the summer, if deadheaded until the autumn. Dianthus are forgiving plants and if ground conditions don’t permit they will thrive in a well drained window box in a sunny position so even if you only have a ledge to grow things on you can still have something that smells wonderful and rewards you for several months.

JLL RESIDENTIAL
Affordable Housing in London? with James Plumley Residential Development Sales Manager, JLL Last month, we saw Sadiq Khan succeed in his campaign to become the Mayor of London. Housing was, of course, a key part of his manifesto, committing to delivering more affordable housing for Londoners and offering them the chance to purchase new homes ahead of overseas buyers. A 50 per cent affordable housing target for new developments has been pledged, along with using his mayoral planning powers to stop ‘buy-to-leave’ investment, helped, in part, by his aim to stop off plan advance sales to overseas investors. However, there is little evidence of ‘buy-to-leave’ happening in London and we fear that, by restricting demand, the ability to deliver sufficient new homes will be compromised; overseas investment is an important factor in ensuring the deliverability of these much-needed homes. Mr Khan intends to use his £400million affordable homes budget to support housing associations to deliver more homes, but we mustn’t ignore the fact that there will be challenges to face; construction costs alone are increasing around 8 per cent each year, thanks to labour and material shortages. Similarly, the plan to bring forward more land owned by public bodies like TfL, and to use the Mayor’s new homes team to develop that land, would be universally supported across the industry if it makes commercial sense. In terms of the rental market, Mr Khan has proposed some welcome policies; a not-for-profit lettings agency to promote longer-term stable tenancies for responsible tenants and good landlords, and a landlord licensing scheme are welcomed, but cost, process, and regulatory challenges must still be acknowledged.
Sadiq Khan expresses a great commitment to addressing the capital’s shortage of affordable housing for ‘normal’ Londoners, with many encouraging ideas. However, with competition for funds aggressive, processes stunting opportunities, and local and international interest potentially at odds, herein lies the challenge. Any Mayor who can work with the grain of the market to create long term and lasting solutions will make genuine progress in addressing London’s housing provision problems. Sadiq has promised to be the most pro-business Mayor yet, if he holds to this the development community will play its part in addressing the supply challenge. If you would like to discuss your investment requirements, we would love to hear from you. Please do contact me on 020 7087 5634 or email james.plumley@eu.jll.com.
