FROM THE EDITOR
It is officially Spring...the weather may not be synonymous with the season, but we shall power on in search of warmer climes. Helping you through this month is Mother’s Day which offers every excuse as to why you need to indulge in both brunch and afternoon tea in the same day. Once you have recovered from that, there is plenty of chocolate to help you through. We are of course talking about the egg shaped variety. Whether you are looking for an egg to scoff in secret or a centre piece for an easter party to remember, there is something out there for you. Before we get to the over-indulging on chocolate stage we must appreciate all those mothers out there and what better way than with an exquisite bunch of fine flowers. You can order them directly from your favourite flourist or if you fancy taking matters in to your own hands then you can do as top florist Robbie Honey does and venture to the biggest flower market in London. You will find every flower you could dream up (as long as it is available in season of course) and can create the ultimate bouquet for your deserving mum. Once she has been sufficiently overcome with pride and joy, you
can sweep her off her feet to one of London’s excellent afternoon tea offerings. The quintessentially British way to celebrate any occasion, even the afternoon itself ! If you are looking for something even more breathtaking, you could always splash out for a spa day or even a full weekend break to the most impressive spa within an hour of London. Pennyhill Park holds the key to the ultimate Mother’s Day treat. Nestled in the Surrey countryside, you can escape the city and relax to your hearts content, waited on hand and foot, quite literally in their phenomenal spa. There is an event that some would consider a much bigger affair than that of Mother’s Day occurring this month. Baselworld returns offering the opportunity to see every conceivable brand and company even remotely engaged in the watch and jewellery industry descend on one small town in Switzerland and of course the inevitably breathtaking pieces they will be showing off too. As always, there is plenty to keep us all occupied this month as we strive for the summer and the start of the outdoor social calendar.

New Covent Garden Market with Robbie Honey
With Spring officially starting at the beginning of March and Mother’s Day on the way, now is a fantastic time to go and explore the biggest and best wholesale flower market in the UK at New Covent Garden. Based near Battersea in South West London and several times the size of any other flower market, wholesaler or cash and carry this unique venue offers everything you could possibly imagine when it comes to choosing fresh flowers for any occasion. The flower market core trading hours are between four and ten o’clock in the morning so it’s best to be up with the larks as they say and make an early start to give yourself enough time to visit all the wonderfully colourful stalls. While a trip to the market is a must for any budding florist, we were lucky enough to take in the sights with master florist Robbie Honey, who is possibly one of the best people in the industry to give a guided tour. Seemingly well known in the market to every trader, Robbie took us through the sea of colour and dazzling arrays of every flower imaginable. The fragrant scents of all these magnificent blooms hits you as soon as you approach the main hall and you notice a distinct chill in there as it’s normally kept at about fourteen degrees, but this all helps to prolong the life of the flowers and to keep them in perfect condition. From the exquisite (and one of the most popular) white roses in the market called Avalanche to the beautiful displays of Hyacinths, Freesias, Chrysanthemums and many, many more varieties, Robbie eagerly points them all out and names them individually as we walk around. Having grown up in Zimbabwe, Robbie’s love of botanical pursuits started when he was a young boy exploring the wild grasslands and the hills and plateaus of his native homeland. Here he sought out various flora and forna such as wild orchids, all the time developing his already keen visual and olfactory senses. This has led to a passionate, lifelong love affair with flowers and their beautiful scents. Robbie has always had an affinity with flowers and after studying horticulture at seventeen he went on to work in the floriculture trade in Holland and Kenya and to further his creative abilities, he studied photography and interior design at art school in Cape Town. After moving to London and training with a leading floral designer to hone his skills even more, he gained a complete knowledge and grounding in event floristry. In 2001 he set up his own business in London in order to bring his creative vision to life. Word spread of Robbie’s unique artistic abilities combined with his superb knowledge of how flowers grow and also his deep understanding of the fundamental mechanics of working with cut flowers. So much so that he is now well established as a leading figure in the flower industry and has built up an enviable client list such as Hermès (who was his first fashion client), Dior, Armani, Vivienne Westwood and he is the go to florist for the fashion event industry. Always in demand, he is also immensely popular in the wedding industry. His keen eye has inspired designs of uncompromising love and exquisite beauty and quality. Robbie has continued to build his profile through various media appearances and by lecturing around the world and writing for prestigious titles such as the Wall Street Journal. He is known as a Master Florist at the prestigious FlowerSchool New York and he is currently travelling to and from China. Robbie is always looking for different challenges and his next venture has been the creation of his own unique and luxurious brand showcasing a debut collection of scented candles inspired by the scents of his favourite white flowers. The flower market will always be a special place and although the current site will be undergoing major re-development resulting in it moving to an interim site in January 2017, it will have its permanent home at the front of the market in September 2022. The Big Time Ken Kessler
“Big” barely describes Baselworld – “biggest” merely provides an absolute. Suffice it to say, the 1800 or so exhibitors include – bar the 16 main brands who appeared at SIHH in Geneva – every watch company, trade supplier and associated jewellery brand … in the world. From Corum to Casio, Shinola to Seiko, this is the one-stop venue for finding out what the coming year will hold.
Writing this sneak preview mere weeks before its mid-March occurrence means that the best-kept secrets will remain that until our next issue. We know, for example, that Patek Philippe has something sensational planned for the 40th anniversary of the Nautilus. 2016 being the first “post-Apple watch” Baselworld suggests that there will be more smart watches to deal with, whatever the time scale needed to develop them. And, as times have been tough of late, some observers are expecting more activity at lower price points. All of the major players, along with Patek, deliver their most important new pieces, so the presentations at Rolex, Omega, Chopard,
Hublot, Breitling and others of that calibre will be packed, while all of the jewellery and fashion brands with serious watch divisions never disappoint: Bulgari, Hermès, Dior, Chanel … all present. New brands continue to appear. The Palace will contain its usual fascinating mix of specialists like Bremont (with new models tied into the America’s Cup), Urwerk, SpeakeMarin and others. What has leaked out is as tempting as ever – hard times be damned. Tudor has proven to be one of the most successful relaunches in watch history, and has, for the past five years (depending on the territory) been the hottest sport watch in the £2000-£4000 category. Because it is less conservative than parent company Rolex, unusual colours are part of its modus operandi.

KEN KESSLER For 2016, there will be fights over the sure-to-be-oversold Black Bay Bronze, with bronze case and brown dial and bezel. Bronze has become a subgenre of its own, thanks to Anonimo, Bell Ross, U-Boat and anerai the Tudor will enjoy a similarly warm welcome, as will Oris’ equally-sexy Carl Brashear Limited dition, a bronze version of the wildly successful Divers SixtyFive. Another reissue this writer can’t wait to try on is Girarderregaux’s Laureato. This design classic came out in 1 and was so nicknamed by the Italian distributor, after the film, The Graduate. It has been revived periodically over the decades,
but this time it celebrates the brand’s 22 th anniversary. Alas, this hexagonally-shaped, 1mm automatic in steel will be issued a limited edition of only 22 examples. Methinks it will be so successful that they should have used the other number 1 1, the company’s birth year.

enith is another venerable brand undergoing a renaissance. After its tie-in with the Rolling Stones, the makers of the world’s most admired chronograph movement the l rimero has a rather discreet timepiece for you to consider if you prefer “suave” to “bling”. The lite Chronograph Classic’s name is no mere marketing conceit. l rimero within, protected by a dial and case so elegant that it’s almost ironic, given that chronographs suggest sporty rather than dressy. But this pulls it off with such panache that it begs to be worn with black tie. Tudor is but one brand experimenting with unanticipated colours. Indeed, wild dials may dominate this year, with rnst Benz collaborating with artist Anthony Liggins for its dials, and M hle Glash tte delivering a rather tasty take on its 2. mm diameter 2 er eigerdatum sport model. “2 er” refers to a type of dinghy, “ eigerdatum” tells you that a hand, rather than a number in a window, shows the date, and the colour scheme is a fetching white dial with pale blue outer date ring.
Sorry to dwell on retro, but it’s so much a motivating force in the watch world (hell, mechanical watches by their very nature are retro) and it usually delivers styles far more appealing than much of the swill being conceived today, that it’s unavoidable. unghans has turned not to its own past but to Germany’s motoring history for the look of the sublime Meister Driver Handaufzug offered in two versions, the dials are inspired by the detail work of the mighty Maybach DS eppelin, a true luxury car from 1 2. If the Maybach connection adds kudos to the unghans Meister Driver, TAG Heuer has another to test the credit card balance of collectors of car-related watches. Sneak previews for Baselworld started as early as last December, and my download folder contained one press kit with a sure-fire hit the latest in the now-permanent Monaco collection has looks that mimic perfectly the 1 6 original, while the special feature is the inhouse movement. Appropriately, they put only “Heuer” on the dial for the period feel, and then named it “Monaco Calibre 11 ‘McQueen’”. No prizes for guessing which McQueen. baselworld.com

Engineered to the extreme...tested to the max British brand Bremont have announced three new models to their core collection including a new addition to the impressive Martin-Baker range - the watches developed in partnership with the British ejection seat manufacturer. The new timepiece Bremont MBII White - offers discerning customers a white dialled version in the bestselling MB range. The premise of the watch itself is and has always been ‘to be quite simply the definitive British aviation chronometer.’ And there is very good reason for it to stake claim to the title. Designed and tested to the extreme in conjunction with Martin-Baker, these watches are subjected to the same rigorous testing that any ejector seat must endure. As a result, you can get your hands on a timepiece that can pretty much withstand anything you will be able to throw at it and jumping out of a plane wouldn’t even feature on its list of potential hazards. Creating the white dial version is a result of customer demand, so you can be sure that there will plenty of people lining up to get their hands on one. It offers a stiking new look to the classic piece along with the distinctive knurled effect on the aluminium barrel which is inspired by components on the ejection seats themselves. Adding to the options list you can choose to have it in orange, green or anthracite. Continuing the visual links, the end of the second hand features a yellow and black loop referencing to the ejection pull handle.
There are many instances in the watch world where companies collaborate for little more than brand awareness and brief financial gain, however that could not be further from the truth for these to brands. With a strong relationship built over many years and a product to back up the heresay, no one can argue with the reputation they have built. Nick nglish, Co-Founder of Bremont “The Martin-Baker collaboration is a partnership we are extremely proud of as a company. The testing goes back many years and has led to some key technological developments in our watch design. They are an incredible British engineering success story and developing a new version of the already iconic MBII watch, has been a real honour.” Andrew Martin, Martin-Baker “We have subjected this new MBII to some exciting tests, and unsurprisingly, the watch has continued to pass with flying colours. It is a watch with a real story and a proper pedigree and we love that.” The MBII White very much retains the classic DNA that has made the MB a must-have for any serious collector. It has been put through the same intensive, extensive testing schedule that the ejection seats go through including shock, vibration, temperature extremes, and salt-fog tests. To find out just how far these guys are willing to push their engineering, visit the website, but be careful, your body might not be able to take it. bremont.com

Time for Tradition Breguet provides a world-preview before the big reveal at Baselworld, showing off its new feminine creation. A model from the Classique collection featuring one of the most romantic horological complications the moon phase. This discreet yet remarkable white gold watch with finely fluted caseband frames a Grand Feu enamel dial betokening significant mastery of traditional techniques. This dainty face is enhanced by ‘Breguet numerals’ in reference to the founder of the House, who designed them in 1 . The minutes track, made up of tiny stars, as well as the the use of stylised fleurs-de-lis for the five-minute fractions are another tribute to the Breguet watchmaking tradition. The pure lines of this Classique hase de Lune Dame faithfully reproduce the hallmarks that have ensured the success of the House for over 2 0 years. breguet.com
Hybrid Horology To celebrate the 0th anniversary of its first in-house quartz movement, the famous ultra-thin calibre presented in 1 6, iaget unveils the mperador Coussin L 00 an astonishing concept watch issued in a 11 -piece limited series. Featuring an unusual match between a mechanical calibre and a generator, this resolutely innovative timepiece highlights two perfectly mastered skills embedded in the very genes of the Manufacture. While iaget stand out for their expertise and creativity in the development of ultra-thin calibres, the brand also has its own range of quartz movements equipping many of its ladies’ timepieces and jewellery watch creations. In tribute to this dual excellence, the mechanical heart of the mperador Coussin L 00 is regulated by the high frequency of a quartz oscillating at 2’ 6 Hz which controls the speed of the generator at . turns per second. This exclusive ‘motor’ boasting peerless precision is housed in a cushion-shaped case with a diameter of 6. mm, displaying the noble distinction of the Black Tie collection as well as the boldness of its powerfully structured lines. piaget.com
Last month saw the opening of de Grisogono’s new London flagship store in Mayfair. Located at 1 a New Bond Street and spanning square meters, the store features a new interiors concept developed by de Grisogono founder Fawaz Gruosi in collaboration with London interior architecture practice David Collins Studio. The new store concept expresses the energy, craftsmanship and detailing of the jewellery and watch collections designed by Fawaz Gruosi, utilising classic details and proportions juxtaposed with modernist furniture pieces. The ‘Stanza Del Tempo’ (above) is one of three rooms and celebrates the brand renowned timepiece collections. The room is dark and dramatic in contrast with the other spaces. Wall mounted, cantilevered vitrines in antique brass sit against wood veneer marquetry walls showcasing the innovative and unique de Grisogono timepieces.

Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite ewellery. fficial agents for many of the world s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on iamonds precious stones. stablished in 1 8 , ew Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.
The story of Breguet has been told a thousand times over and perhaps best summarised by the brand’s own motto, “watchmaker to Kings, King of watchmakers.” The emphasis on heritage has never been so present given the surge in independent brands, newly formed yet gaining serious traction in the overall market and especially at price points matching those charged by historical brands playing on their prestige, yet perhaps offering the customer more in terms of actual watchmaking craft. I believe Breguet balances this well with a foot in both worlds with a conscious focus on development but also varied price positions to encourage the new buyer as well as amaze the seasoned purveyor. The Brand has a remarkable history arguably the oldest uninterrupted watch business in history, genuinely worn by the Kings Queens of medieval urope, the crowning jewel in the reformation of the watch industry via the Swatch Group and ultimately still relevant. I believe this relevance is best visualised in the Tradition collection.
The Tradition collection offers a nod to Breguet’s historical pocket watch movements with an emphasis on adding beauty to a functional arrangement. Delivered initially in a simple layout showcasing a visible balance wheel in either automatic or hand wound versions, these watches matched an industry wide fashion of skeletonised movements, yet no brand had quite delivered in such an asymmetric style whose design was actually borne of historically documents predecessors. Revamping and modernising an older concept is not a new idea nor particularly remarkable but the nature in which it was executed returns me to why I believe Breguet’s balances the wishes of the purists well alongside the trendier modern horology set. Having laid the well received foundation for the tradition family, Breguet began to add their own touches including the now famous Fusee Tourbillon version further developing one of breguet’s own creations. In this instance, I would like to focus on two of the more accessible models. The Tradition with Retrograde Seconds was released in 201 showcasing a seconds indicator at 11 0’clock that ran through a small semicircle, which flicked back to its starting point upon finishing the crescent. This is not a particularly complicated addition for Breguet but rather another small visual point of note. It did not take away from the beautiful layout or finishing of the openwork dial but rather if you looked closely, which as an owner you most likely did quite often, there would always be some movement within the face to add a new level of fascination. Last year, they went a step further and added a chronograph to the family. The chronograph is perhaps the most visible yet least used complication in modern watchmaking That said, Breguet could not help but over deliver. The Tradition Chronograph Independent to give it its full name showcases to two visible balance wheels one to regulate the timekeeping and the other for the chronograph. In recent years, using new inventions specifically
New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF
COLUMN developed by Breguet, silicon had been introduced into vital components of the movement. Silicon by its nature is a more durable materials and as such, the movements frequency could be increased as silicon could withstand more wear and tear this theoretically in turn could increase the accuracy and lifetime of the mechanism. Not quite reaching the height of 10Hz as introduced int the sister model within the Classique family, the Tradition Chronograph still has the time balance wheel running at Hz and the chronograph at a staggering hz. Running them concurrently firstly offers no discrepancy to the regular time keeping but also is a visual feast of watchmaking with the
chronograph balance wheel noticeably faster. As with the majority of these complications, there is perhaps no practical value owing to other modern tools but the simple awe inspiring details of the work that has gone into painstakingly creating these tableaus of horology is worth the look alone. Should you become an owner of one of these stunning watches, I think it’s safe to say you might find the day goes incredibly slowly given how often you look at your watch but in this case that might not be such a bad thing. We are an official agent for Breguet, please feel free to visit our Boutique and discover the entire collection.

FELLOWS AUCTIONEERS
Don’t Fall Foul of Fakes with Adrian Hailwood
drian has over 0 years experience in the luxury goods industry with names such as Mappin & Webb, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Breguet. He is a Director of Fellows Auctioneers with particular responsibility for the Watch epartment.
The fake watch industry has smartened up its act in recent years. You can still find the laughably obvious watches sold in holiday destinations that make your wrist go green and last about as long as your tan, but modern reprographic technology and advances in machining methods have raised the latest counterfeits to a very different level indeed. These are watches that, to the untrained eye, look indistinguishable from the real thing. No longer are quartz movements substituted for mechanicals and even some of the complicated watches work as they should little surprise as the movements have been copied too. ven the serial numbers are different a small detail but difficult for counterfeiters to achieve. The selling of these watches has developed too, no longer the preserve of the man on the beach or a back-street shop these watches are being sold via smart websites that spring up again as fast as the luxury brands can shut them down. Recent statistics from urope’s leading intellectual property agency suggests that counterfeit watches and jewellery represent 1 million in lost sales to the UK economy while a survey in the run up to Christmas found a small but significant percentage of people would happily receive a fake watch as a gift. So if fake watches are becoming better, more prevalent and more widely accepted, where is the problem Aren’t they just a bit of fun, a victimless crime or a way to have the air of luxury until you can afford the real thing The answer is no, for a multitude of reasons. Obviously the sale of counterfeit watches damages the business of the brand you are purporting to wear. As
the production of the watches is criminal, you can be sure that the proceeds will be put to equally criminal use and besides, good as they are, these are still s u b - s t a n d a rd products.
COLUMN The point at which you cannot ignore these high-quality fakes is when you enter the preowned watch market either through private sales, dealers, auctions or eBay. If you buy a fake yourself, you are a knowing participant in the counterfeit trade but if such watches leak into the secondary market then you may be getting a lot less than you bargained for without knowing it. So how would you know If buying online then ‘Caveat emptor’ and a rock solid returns policy buying on a credit card are your only protection. No matter how carefully you examine the photos or how detailed the questions you ask, you have no way of knowing if what you have seen is what you will receive. Of course reputation helps, whether you are buying from an online-only dealer or eBay a little research into their selling history and level of customer satisfaction can reveal a lot. If they have plenty of genuine fans, they are unlikely to make a habit of ripping people off. If you can examine the watch in person, you may feel you are on safer ground but are you really Given that the box and paperwork as well as the watch can be faked, you need to be an experienced collector or be in the trade to spot the tell-tale signs. ven the best of fakes are producing watches for a fraction of the price of the genuine article and quality shows through. An experienced hand will know the correct feel of a well-made bracelet or bezel and while the relevant numbers and details may be present on a fake, a trained eye will know whether they have been applied in the right way. A view of the movement is often a clincher, with all but the best fakes showing a disappointing excuse for the real thing assuming that you know what the real thing is . Buying pre-owned comes down to trust. An established ‘bricks and mortar’ business that you can go back to should a problem arise will always be safer than an anonymous online deal. Buying from an auction house who specialise in watches such as Fellows gives you the security of knowing that an expert has examined the watch, both inside and out and will stake their reputation on
everything being right. As they work for both the buyer and the seller, they are not only there to weed out fakes but also to disclose any other additions or alterations that the watch has undergone. Of course if something slips through the net you can be sure of a refund. If you want to add to your own knowledge give yourself a little more protection in the wild world of watch buying you should consider the ‘Customised and Counterfeit Watch’ course being offered by the Birmingham Assay office as part of their AnchorCert Academy. This one day seminar held in association with Fellows Auctioneers gives you an insight in to the techniques the experts use to weed out the numerous fakes that come in for sale. In an ever more connected world, it is harder to hide a bargain and watches have a fairly predictable market price. The old saying has never been more apt, ‘If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is ’

Brexit. The Suspense is Killing Us. ur ďŹ nancial insider reviews the global markets
This suspense is terrible. I hope it will last until 2 rd une. UK referendum to exit uro zone is a big deal. Yes to stay and accept the immigrant issues, get one off refund from urozone bailout, enhance London financial center status and other terms. No means exit uro zone and many things could change from import export tax to individual working visa. The GB dropped 2 on 22nd February on the back of London Mayor Boris ohnson joined Brexit campaign. This shows the financial market may not welcome the possible exit which is generally viewed as bad for business. One of the smartest UK decisions in history is to retain British Sterling and did not use uro. UK could maintain its own independent monetary policy such as interest rate, issuance of debts and budget. Imagine if UK has to follow uro zone to adopt negative interest rate. Look at the headache Switzerland had in trying to defend UR CHF. Something is not working in this relationship and both UK and uro zone have put in effort to mend it. rime Minister David Cameron has put in great effort to negotiate the terms for this referendum but the terms seem to be just pain killers. It may ease the pain but does not change the relationship. If UK citizens vote yes to stay, the big picture remains unchanged. If UK citizens vote no, UK can decide its immigration policy on uro zone citizens. Immigration policy is probably as important as monetary policy. It has a very long term and deep impact to the culture. While Facebook, Instagram and YouTube have flattened the world as every global citizen is exposed to similar information, actual people movement can have a big impact on employment, demography, religions, talent and the structure of a society. The hedge fund managers and traders may sell off GB as an immediate reaction to the uncertainty of Brexit. But these movements in financial market are short term. Voters need to consider the impact to the future generations. Global stock market continues to be volatile and fragile. Some oil exporting countries are liquidating asset to make up of the shortfall in cashflow due to low oil price. Mutual funds and hedged funds are probably still getting redemption from oil related high networth individuals and family offices. As stock prices drop, there are margin
calls on clients who are leveraged and these margin calls lead to more liquidation. The low interest rate in USD, UR and Y encouraged investors to leverage in the past years. So the market is deleveraging portfolio that took years to build. The selling is so fierce that it distorts market valuation to 200 level. If this is 200 and history repeats, then it is a year to bargain hunt. Some investors may consider buying index funds. However, the banking sectors, the oil and gas companies, commodities sector and properties in some markets deserve further consideration. uropean banks are once again under the spot light and there has been a lot of news about Deutsche Bank. Deutsche Bank is trading at UR 1 . 2 as of 2 February, 2016. It has fallen . since 1st Dec 201 . Credit Suisse, BN , HSBC, Barclays have all fallen , 21 , 2 and 26 in their share price since 1st December, 201 respectively. No bargain hunting here. B and Royal Dutch Shell have gone down and up .6 in share price since end of last year. In the same period, oil price is down 1 . BH Billiton, Rio Tinto and ArcelorMittal share prices are 10 , and 1 down year to date respectively. Many of these companies have debt to be re-financed and even if some of them managed to find lenders, the cost of fund is likely to increase. There is an over capacity issues in the resources sector and consolidation will happen. It is probably too early to bargain hunt but there should soon be some emerging opportunities in oil and gas stocks. They just got hammered too badly. roperty prices in Asian cities like Hong Kong and Singapore are softening. This is because the government policies in Hong Kong and Singapore have been armed to deflate the property bubble. On the other hand, residential property prices in China tier one cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen are rising 0 to 60 in the past 12 months according to local property agents. Some high end luxury properties in these Chinese cities are selling at over GB 1,000 per square foot. Chinese government has narrowed the gate for money outflow and the local stock market has been more than disappointing. This combination drives excess liquidity to tier one cities property. London properties will probably continue to attract Asian buyers.

Soholistic The quirky spa hidden in the heart of Soho
Offering a full range of body and beauty treatments, the Soholistic Spa at the Ham Yard Hotel is a welcome haven, just a stone’s throw away from bustling Piccadilly Circus. Modern and light with a number of beautifully appointed treatment rooms, the Spa offers the choice of individual rooms and a double treatment room, along with a relaxation area, steam room and showers, fully equipped gym and changing rooms. There is also a hypoxic gym, available for pre-bookings and private hire. Designed by Kit Kemp, co-owner and Design Director at Firmdale Hotels, the group Ham Yard belongs to and who also own the Haymarket Hotel and The Soho Hotel, the spa features an array of quirky interior features. The bare wood floors, use of marble, shells and warm colours such as the coral curtains in the relaxation area come together to create a really unique space that’s miles away from some clinical looking spas. Soholistic has partnered with Temple Spa to provide a unisex range of highly advanced products and treatments created to combat the stresses and strains of everyday life. Their varied line offers the very best in anti-ageing skin care, aromatherapy and anti-oxidants. If you like the finer things in life then it’s an easy decision to opt for the Champagne and Truffles Deluxe treatment. As the name suggests, the facial uses luxurious ingredients such as Champagne, silk, diamonds, gold and, of course, black truffles. Combining these lavish treats with specialised techniques to reveal fresher, more youthful skin highlights of the relaxing treatment include a warm melting mask which helps smooth skin and flatten out fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment begins with a deep upper back massage to help calm the mind before the facial allowing ultimate relaxation. Massage is key component of the treatment with the face also treated to a lifting massage to help strengthen and tone the skin, while cooling stones help to reduce any puffiness. Two masks are used during the treatment and on application of the last mask, hands and arms are exfoliated and moisturised. To top the treatment off, your dedicated therapist then carefully applies Temple Spa’s award winning, blissfully scented ‘Skin Truffle’. Containing Black Truffles, Cocoa Butter, Grape Seed Champagne and Diamond Powder to illuminate, skin is left feeling smoother, more supple, and luminously radiant making this the perfect way to spring clean your skin in time for the hopefully warmer months. Clients also receive a small pot of Skin Truffle to take home as well as a celebratory glass of bubbly. 020 3642 1035 | soholistic@firmdale.com | firmdalehotels.com Images: Simon Brown

Bohemians & Bon Vivants Balans Soho Society’s iconic Soho restaurant on Old Compton Street has been re-opened after major revamp. After 30 years in the business the indulgent cafe, restaurant, bar and member’s establishment in one is back bigger and better than ever. In keeping with its mischievous location of Soho, Balans is the perfect place for some fun whatever the time of day. Wherever the night takes you, you can be sure that you will be full. The new menu has been overseen by xecutive Chef Crispin Chetwynd, a culinary rockstar who has spent time touring the globe with the likes of Paul McCartney, Michael ackson and ink Floyd. Designed to highlight the very best of local produce, the seasonally-changing menu offers a range of light bites on petite plates including burnt aubergine baba ghanoush peppered with pomegranate seeds and sumac; thrice-fried chicken with shichimi mayonnaise; and ham hock croquettes with aioli. One top tip when visiting is to make sure you are hungry. ven the light bites are incredibly generous and you will be hard pushed not to feel incredibly satisfied by the end of the meal.
However you can be sure to still enjoy dessert. The High Society Mess for two to share complete with a sparkler is a must have and you won’t be able to resist. Along with a host of sandwiches and salads, the mains include the Infamous Balans Burger with cheese, thick rashers of bacon and pickle to the 12oz sirloin steak with double-dipped chips and bourbon BBQ sauce. New dishes to arrive since the revamp include grilled halloumi on olive mash with cherry tomatoes and lemon honey dressing; Handpicked Cornish Crab linguine; and skillet-roasted chicken with farro, fig and pine nuts. No meal is complete without a cocktail or two and luckily Balans specialises in this. The ever popular Porn Star Martini Absolut Blue, vanilla syrup, passion fruit puree and a Champagne shot - is a great choice as is the lderflower Collins - Broker’s gin, St. Germain, apple. With regards to interior the restaurant has taken a shabby chic approach. nsuring the space looks slightly rough around the edges while also maintaining a wonderfully decadent vibe with rich velvet curtains, beaded curtains, designer wallpaper and antique mirrors.

HARRODS WINE
The Oenophilist
with Edward Gerard, Wine Buyer for Harrods
dward Gerard started his career cycling cases of fine wine round the SW1 and SW3 postcodes. Some 13 years later after a stint in the S , and having extensively traveled and tasted his way around the wine world he finds himself with the enviable job of selecting the vast range available in the ine ooms at Harrods.
with a classic cigar tobacco note and some earthy notes to add to the complexity, available at 1 . from The Wine Room at Harrods. If you want something from the Medoc’s famous appellations, then my wine of choice is the delicious 2011 Chateau Le Coteau from Margaux; with cassis and plum notes combining with hints of herbs and all held together with soft silky tannins. When I tried this 12 months ago it was a little young and a touch rough around the edges but today the tannins have softened and the fruit is shining through ( 2 . ). For the top estates we still have to dig a little deeper into our pockets but (and there is a but) right now I think the top 2nd to 5th growth Chateaux and their equals are a better value pick than their new world equivalents, with some of their prices falling by half over the past five years. One to highlight would be the wines of Chateau Canon which is a Premier Grand Cru Classe estate from St milion and I believe offers brilliant value compared to its neighbours. My pick for drinking at the moment would be the 2002 vintage which is simply beautiful at this moment and worth every penny of its £69.95 price tag. And my wine to look out for Arriving soon to The Wine Room portfolio, will be the epically good 2010 Chateau Devise d’Ardilley from the Haut Medoc, which will be landing on shelf at £18.95 and is the best wine I have tried sub £20 from anywhere over the last 6 months.
Having just returned from Bordeaux where I was blending the future releases of Harrods Claret and Sauvignon Blanc; I thought I’d take this opportunity to share my outlook on Bordeaux and why I believe we are seeing a resurgence of interest in this most famous of all wine regions. For the past five years the wine market has focused on Italy, Spain and the new world as opposed to the old time favourite Bordeaux and collectors have been enamoured by the virtues of Burgundy and the stellar 2010 vintage from Brunello. I believe that this has been a positive thing in general, as it has shone a light on the wider market like never before as merchants and retailers diversify their offerings and offer the customer more choice. There is amazing value to be had from across the globe right now but equally with demand falling away from Bordeaux so have the prices! Thus I found myself on our recent trip uttering the words great value when referring to numerous wines we were trying. Here are my top picks from our current range and a future tip on a wine that we have arriving shortly. First up is the delicious 2010 Chateau Des Demoiselles from the lesser known appellation Cotes des Castillon, it offers lovely blue plum and blueberry fruit

Perkin Reveller Located on the Wharf outside the Tower of London and part of the Tower of London estate, the Perkin Reveller not only boasts fantastic view of Tower Bridge, but also serves up some great British classics. Managed by The Historic Royal alaces, an independent charity that also looks after Hampton Court alace, Kensington alace, Kew alace and Banqueting House, the light and airy restaurant boasts a large outdoor terrace that’s guaranteed to be popular in the summer months and a large dining room and bar inside. In a tribute to small producers and local artisans, much of the restaurant is hand crafted from the solid oak chairs and large wooden tables to the outdoor cushions and earthenware beer jugs. With a classic cocktail menu, the two AA rosette restaurant offers numerous sharing plates to graze over while you decide on your meal. To start we recommend the London Smoked Salmon with Horseradish crème fraiche, capers and lemon or the Smoked Haddock Fishcakes with tartare sauce. Moving on to mains, the Confit Duck leg with spinach, borlotti beans and chorizo stew is an excellent choice and extremely filling, as is the traditional Fish and Chips. For something more warming the heavily British inspired menu also offers Cottage ie with creamy mash and kale; and Venison and red wine sauce. Vegetarians can enjoy the umpkin and Ricotta Strudel. All the dishes are incredibly reasonably priced considering the location and presentation. The restaurant carries off this relaxed vibe well with staff only too keen to help when needed, instead of hovering around unnecessarily. The light feel from the surrounding windows and romantic candle lit tables allow the Tower and the Bridge to shine in all its glory and if you are visiting in the evening you can even watch one of the Beefeaters come and ‘lock up’ the Tower to ensure the precious jewels are kept safe overnight. No British restaurant is complete without a cheese board on the dessert menu and for those with a sweeter tooth, there is the lighter option of ice cream or perhaps the Chocolate tart with praline crème fraiche; rhubarb crumble; apple tart tatin will take your fancy.

The Clarence A stone’s throw from Trafalgar Square, whispers suggest this was once Winston Churchill’s favoured local. Fresh from a transformative renovation, The Clarence on Whitehall offers refuge from the busy streets of Westminster. The bar area welcomes you with quirky d cor, while upstairs offers a more elegant dining experience in the Tin Belly Dining Room and hidden away is the Bulldog Bar available for private events. The drinks menu features an array of global wines and spirits, whilst the bar boasts 12 ales on tap, including Young’s, and a number of local craft beers. The menu is classic British with modern touches, from game specials to rich weekend roasts. Traditional pub fare is given the treatment it deserves by The Clarence’s brigade of talented chefs, while firm favourites are present throughout with beer battered cod and chips, toad-in-the-hole and prime British beef burgers. For a more secluded business lunch or an indulgent dinner, the Tin Belly Room is the pub’s newest space. Imbued with a sense of refined decadence styled in rich, parliamentary colours from maroon banquettes to heavy, dark stained wooden tables with a huge skylight running the length of the ceiling funnelling light in. Start with a classic Dorset crab and prawn cocktail, or for something to share try the ham selection with Cornish coppa, Oxsprings ham and Suffolk chorizo and salami. A daily changing gueridon service will also be introduced in the dining room, with highlights including 21 day aged sirloin on the bone with beef dripping roast potatoes, seasonal greens, double egg Yorkshire pudding, beef gravy and homemade horseradish. For something different try the vegetarian ‘aubergine bacon’ dish served with bubble and squeak, crispy poached egg and tomato chutney. A variety of daily specials are also on offer. Finish off with a huge slice of creamy white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake or for those with less of a sweet tooth try the selection of cheeses with Rosary goat’s cheese, Cropwell Bishop Stilton and Lancashire bomb. Patara Berners Street
Offering some of the best Thai cuisine in town, atara recently opened their fifth site on Berners Street in the heart of the West nd. The group, who celebrated their 2 th anniversary last year, has locations around the world including Singapore, Vienna, Geneva, Beijing and Bangkok. Spanning two floors, the modern new restaurant boasts a menu that has been developed by two of Thailand’s leading chefs, Chef Chumpol angprai and Chef Noom. Chef Chumpol has been working with atara for ten years, and is a leading celebrity chef in his native Thailand and was recently awarded ‘The Best New Generation IRON Chef in Thai Cooking’. Chef Noom (otherwise known as Nelson) joined atara as Global xecutive Chef and has 1 years experience working in leading kitchens including Momo and Sketch. With 20 new dishes, initially available exclusively to Berners Street, highlights include seared Wagyu beef salad, Chor Muang dumplings filled with caramelised chicken with sweet turnip and peanut finished with coconut cream and Gai Gor Lae, Chicken supreme in a traditional southern Thai curry sauce. The presentation and quality of each dish is outstanding and this is easily one of London’s most authentic fine dining Thai restaurants which is impressive for a chain. If you’re not sure what to have we highly recommend opting for one of the set menus to try some of the most popular dishes. The atara ride (for a minimum of two) costs per person with soup, and offers five starters and four mains served with vegetable and rice accompaniments as well as an individual dessert. Dishes include Curried kaffir fish cakes with sweet
chilli and cucumber salsa Flower dumplings with caramelised chicken, peanut and sweet turnip and for the mains, Herb steamed sea bass with piquant chilli and garlic sauce Chestnut duck and prawns and Coconut braised beef with lime, mint and lemongrass. A must try however has to be the rawn tom yum soup. Beautifully presented this soup is one of the best we have ever eaten with the perfect blend of sweet, sour and spice. Differing to the group’s other locations, the new restaurant has been inspired by the exquisite wooden carvings and decorative motifs found in traditional Thai architecture creating a luxurious and calming area that’s just a stone’s throw from bustling Oxford Street. Guests are also welcome to hire a separate rear private dining space.

COLUMN
Salvatore’s tails
with Salvatore Calabrese
Salvatore Calabrese - famously known as The Maestro - is one of the world’s top bartenders. He made a name for himself sourcing and mixing ‘Liquid History’, vintage spirits dating back to 1770.
better informed by the drinking revolution that has occurred. I hope I’ve played a part in that - I’ve been a judge in the world’s biggest cocktail competition since 200 and watched amazing young talent come through to be recognised around the world. You’d be mistaken for thinking that I write this with something of The Godfather about me. That I’m settling down to tend my tomato patch while my empire works without me. Well, sure, my sons are in the family business - they’ve got two great bars in east London - but I assure you that’s where the similarities with Don Corleone stop. But I do appreciate that I’ve become something of a guiding hand in the capital’s cocktail scene, even if I don’t quite have the Brando drawl. But as my parting shot, let me leave you with one final recipe, the record-breaking recipe I mentioned earlier, known appropriately as Salvatore’s Legacy. Combine 0ml cognac O, 20ml k mmel, 20ml orange cura ao and 2 or dashes of Angostura bitters in a mixing glass. Add a good handful of ice and stir for 20- 0 seconds, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a twist of orange zest, just for the oils. You don’t have to go to the same lengths as I did in sourcing 1 th century cognac It’s been a pleasure. Salute
Well, it’s been quite a ride, but after five years my journey with layboy Club London has come to an end. I’m moving on, and this column will be my last in this magazine. I hope the window into my world, and by extension my passion for the art of drinking, has been interesting, entertaining and, perhaps, educational against this curious canvas of bunny girls and excess in Mayfair. From breaking records, with the world’s most expensive cocktail (using ingredients collectively 00-years-old) to breaking bottles (I will never forget the crash of that 1 th century 1 0,000 bottle of cognac as it smashed on the floor), to hosting half of Hollywood and wall-to-wall music stars, I feel like I’ve achieved something of note for London’s incredible night-time scene. At one point I had every single one of the world’s most beautiful supermodels in my bar. You’ll appreciate that after four decades of late nights in London, and after running bars in casinos and fancy hotels I’m ready for something different. A change of gear. But that doesn’t mean I’m stopping, oh no. Maybe a smaller, more intimate home for my frighteningly strong Direct Martinis - arguably my legacy to London. Or maybe a home focused on my other love, the Negroni. ither way, I feel no less evangelical about my mission to spread the good word of classic cocktails. After having opened bars In Los Angeles and Las Vegas during my time at layboy, I’m also heading east, with a new bar opening shortly in Hong Kong. Like me, I feel like our drinking culture is at something of a crossroads. veryone is drinking less, but hopefully making better choices when they do drink,

March brings the return of the Geneva International Motor Show and there will once again be plenty to feast your eyes on. With the recent surge in the luxury SUV market, Maserati have decided to muscle in on the action with their imposing Levante model which will be revealed at the show for the dirst time. This, the first SUV in the brands 100-odd year history, completes their existing range of saloon and sports cars and clearly takes styling notes from its more sport focused sisters. Maserati have tried to maintain the position as a luxury sports car marque and as such have achieved it with a sleek yet aggressive appearance and hopefully a realworld performance to match. The car will come with a sophisticated electronic suspension system with controlled
damping and air springs with variable level settings along with “Q4” intelligent all-wheel drive to ensure performance and ride remain consistent regardless of the surface you decide to drive on. Sister brand Ferrari will also have plenty to shout about at the show with the latest addition, the GTC4Lusso making its official world premiere. Their new four-seater V12 heralds a new era for the sporting Grand Tourer by integrating rear-wheel steering with four-wheel drive for the first time. Allowing the driver to pretty much take this car anywhere at anytime and enjoy the full Ferrari experience. This will be one of the biggest evolutions in motoring technology to hit the show this year, so make sure you take a good long look. It won’t be hard.

GREAT BRITISH GRRRR One of the most stunning looking cars in modern motoring with engineering under the bonnet to match. Oh, and it’s British - at least by design and manufacture.
F-TYPE R AWD COUPÉ
YOUR DRIVE When aguar announced the identity of its new sports car back in 2012, no-one expected what followed. The first F-Type coup ’s rolled off of the production line in April 201 and reignited the British sports car flame which had been left dwindling for many years. Other British marques have of course been producing sports cars for over a century, however, none have managed to achieve delivery of such an influential vehicle to the production market. aguar’s F-Type coup was launched with a .0-litre V6 and a .0-litre V option, each complete with their own distinctive roar from the dual and quad exhaust systems respectively. Now, the brand are pushing this masterpiece of automotive design to the next level. The F-Type SVR is set to make its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show bringing a 200mph version to the mix. Needless to say, there are few occasions where you will find the extra 1 mph of any use,
The potency of this beast is not restrained to the ‘Sport’ setting on its swift -speed automatic ‘box. ut your foot down in standard ‘D’ and you will soon question what on earth the ‘S’ could do quicker. Of course, all of this is enjoyable to a limit on the UK’s otherwise perfect racetrack of roads, so you will definitely be arranging some trips either abroad or one of the menu actual racetracks there are on offer here. Once on the track, you can really see what this car can do and it is quite simply mind blowing. Nestled just under the 100,000 price mark, this is one serious piece of pocket-rocket engineering and understandable to see how it could support the efforts of aguars land speed record hopefuls. Its all-wheel drive capability allow considerably more traction compared to that of its two-wheel drive counterpart meaning more grip off the line and a bigger foot to stand on when you find yourself at a
and fortunately, you don’t have to wait until the summer to enjoy the incredibly satisfying driving experience that the 2016 F-Type R AWD Coup provides. acking a whopping 0 S into the sleek bodywork, this beautiful temptress will catapult you from standing to 60mph in under seconds and will continue in much the same vein until you reach 1 6mph. You can see now why it’s not entirely necessary to wait for the SVR iteration to reach the showroom. Thanks to the AWD functionality, you can also enjoy some fast-paced cornering, aided by the impressively low profile and accentuated width of the car. The coup version also benefits - only slightly - from increased chassis integrity over the soft-top version thanks to its solid roof, which you can also choose to have in panoramic glass form to enjoy watching the clouds pass by, quickly.
corner. That’s not to say that you can’t have fun with this car too as it will more than happily oblige if you fancy throwing the back end out every now and then. You really do not need to try to have fun in this car, it has been built for speed and pleasure, just make sure your passenger agrees before taking them hostage. Fortunately, aguar have kindly provided a handle for your passenger to grip relentlessly on to if needs must, so you don’t have to feel all bad. This cars stature is not only elegantly aggressive, but illustrates perfectly the potential for what it can do wide track, low centre of gravity, short wheel-base and incredibly wide rubber make up all the ingredients necessary for a car that will remain composed through any corner and at any speed unless you would rather it didn’t. You can turn the traction control off if you so wish whilst on the track... jaguar.co.uk

YOUR DRIVE
F-TYPE R AWD COUPÉ It would be highly advisable to ensure you have some experience on the matter before diving straight in, but once you get there, a whole world of fun is waiting and your F-Type will be more than happy to quench your thirst. The road has not always been so kind to the British marque who experienced a prolonged period of the mundane. roducing cars which never wowed the public or even got close to reigniting the flames of old from a time when aguar were at the top of the tree. The same can no longer be said, with a product range which now includes one of the bestselling luxury saloons, a SUV, their new sports saloon (coming soon to a page near you) and has this as its flagship model. If aguar are capable of producing a car like this with the success it has seen since launch, we can only imagine what will be next. In the meantime, we will have to force ourselves to enjoy observing and driving this. aguar’s design team really hit the nail on the head when they released the first images of the F-Type and now with a few minor tweaks here and there, we have arrived at quite possibly the most attractive car in current production. They have managed to combine classic features of the undeniably stunning -Type with a clean-cut, suave demonstration of modern automotive technology. If you are in the position to get your hands on one of these cars, it is definitely worth a trip to the aguar dealership. The second you lay eyes on it in the flesh, the salesperson won’t be required to do anything other than produce the paperwork. She is a true marvel of design, automotive or otherwise and to develop something this beautiful whilst accommodating all of the necessaries within is a testament to the work at aguar. Using the latest technology and materials, the Coup F-Type R AWD weighs in at just over 1, 00kg, which considering it has a .0-litre V lump in the front and an all-wheel drive system to squeeze in is rather impressive. They have clearly saved some precious weight on the bodywork as it is like a lean bodybuilder, nothing unnecessary. You won’t find any room for anything that won’t aid the driving performance under its sleek exterior. You will however find a fairly substantial amount of room for your weekend bag in the boot. Big enough to fit an average set of golf clubs, albeit diagonally (just make sure there’s space on the passenger seat for your woods) and certainly sufficient to fit enough bags for a long weekend in the country. That is the best way to enjoy this car on the UK roads, taking a drive in the country. It will soak up every corner with ease and you begin to feel a part of the car moving in synchrony through every turn. The elegance of its appearance somehow ventures into its driving ability and you slip in to a comfortable and almost relaxing trance, engaging in the motions but having little control of the outcome. Yet you are not concerned because you have an unbreakable bond with the car that imbues trust, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the ride. What makes it even better is that you experience the same emotions every time you get in the car regardless of where you are going and how far away it is. Your trip to the local shop has just reached a whole new level of satisfaction. And despite the ride being - as you can imagine - somewhat sterner than your standard, it is far from enough to distract you from ensuring your smile reaches both cheeks. jaguar.co.uk
67
YOUR DRIVE As an all-round package, aguar have managed to achieve something where many fall short. This is a completely functional car which will house the weekly shop comfortably in the boot leaving space in the front for your other - possibly apprehensive - half to enjoy the ride with you. All-the-while reminding you with the subtle yet apparent rumble from the exhaust that it is ready when you are. lay around with the suspension and gearbox settings and you are away in a flash. Oh, and the exhausts will let you and everyone within a mile radius know about it too. ractical is a bold word to use when talking about a twoseater sports car yet it is oddly fitting with this car. Unless you require additional seats for further family members or have an unstoppable urge to literally take the kitchen sink with you on your travels, you will struggle to find fault with what this car has to offer. ven the fuel consumption is, in relative terms, good for a .0-litre V unit, managing 2 miles to the gallon. It might not sound a lot, but when you remember that this beast can transport you from standing to sixty in under seconds, it becomes a gigantic figure. There are other model options in the range packing a .0-litre V6, but nothing quite makes up for the raw sound and thrill that this V monster delivers and surprisingly, they have managed to make the exhaust look less intimidating on the V than the dual cannon provided on the V6 iteration.
Simply their way off lulling you into a full sense of security before it propels you into a world of driving pleasure like nothing you have experienced before. It is a truly breathtaking piece of engineering from both the design and mechanical viewpoint and one that is impossible to deny when you are staring it in the face. If you haven’t had the pleasure already, head down to your local dealership and take a look for yourself and maybe even dare to take it for a spin. Make sure you take your cheque book with you though, you might find yourself driving it all the way home. Like a siren from the sea, it’s aesthetic magnetism is enough for any man or woman to be seduced into its comfortable, bucket shaped lair from which there is no escape.

The Ultimate British Sportscar 1974 Jaguar E-Type V12 Roadster...They don’t come better than this. This excellent left-hand-drive example of the stunning -Type Roadster comes from the hands of a aguar enthusiast who clearly understands these beautiful machines. The last -Type that found its way from this owner was concours standard, so you can be sure that it is in great condition. Finished in Azure blue coachwork with an unmarked tan leather interior, the look of the car is both eye-catching and perfect for summer driving with the roof down. A new dawn in interior furnishing The London property market has transformed the meaning of ‘fully furnished’ with a new standard in predetermined interior design. Landlords have identified the potential for increased rental prices as a result of luxurious furnishings being not only used in the ‘selling’ process, but as a long-term investment to draw in a higher level of tennant with a price to match. Of course there are benefits from the other side too, you no longer have to spend thousands to complete your luxury London pad with the latest table and chairs, you can budget it into your rental cost and save on all the hassle.

Your Property Market with Alasdair Carpenter Managing Director, Lourdes Estates
e ham s roperty Market Continues to Thri e According to data released by the mortgage lender Halifax, the residential property market in Newham, East London, recorded a staggering 22% increase in prices during 2015. This sets Newham out as one of the UK’s most resurgent property hotspots. Many buyers have been priced out of more central London areas by the relentless and inexorable rise in property prices in recent years. An inevitable consequence of this is that people search further and further out from inner London to find properties that are more affordable whilst, at the same time, still being commutable to central London. Changes in Stamp Duty at the upper echelons of the property market have also increased demand for property in the Capital at sub £1,000,000 levels. There is clear evidence that some of the suburbs have seen property prices buoyed by this experience. As well as Newham, Canning Town is another such beneficiary. Home owners and investors alike continue to scour the property market with an eye on the future. People are less interested with where the right place to live is now and more interested in identifying where demand dictates will be the place to live in say 5 years’ time. In this respect, urban renewal, gentrification and investment in infrastructure and transport links are key considerations. Newham and Canning Town, in particular, makes a very good case for itself. It is the subject of a £3.7 billion regeneration masterplan that includes a new Crossrail Station, new town centre and massive improvements in the general infrastructure. Canning Town has always had very good transport links with both the Jubilee line and DLR available from the tube station, providing easy access to Canary Wharf, The City and The West End. The returns for speculators who predict the right areas of London crossrail.co.uk to invest in are potentially huge. Docklands

E is ondon s Top Strength Say Capital s irms Access to the European Union’s Single Market is the single greatest strength of the United Kingdom’s capital, according to 95% of over 200 of the city’s business leaders responding to the latest CBI/CBRE London Business Survey1. Three quarters of businesses (74%) have customers, and nearly two thirds (6 ) have suppliers, in U countries, providing London with a significant advantage over other global cities. Indeed, of firms rate the capital as a good, or very good, place to do business, and 83% deem London’s status as an international hub – and the reach that that provides – as being above average when compared with cities like New York, Hong Kong, Paris and Tokyo. The capital has been quick to adopt cutting edge technology, with three fifths of businesses citing London’s average performance in this area compared with global peers. The city’s infrastructure was also rated as average by half of firms, when put alongside international cities. 61 of firms believe that the tech and creative sectors will be the driving force behind London’s growth in the next five years (followed by the FinTech and professional services sectors (50%)). Over half of the capital’s businesses are satisfied with their digital coverage, but a lack of digital skills ( 6 ) need to be addressed to take full advantage of the opportunity presented. Lucy Haynes, CBI London Director, says: “From the strength of the capital’s professional services sector to our ability to adapt to an ever-changing digital landscape, it’s clear that London is an international trailblazer. “Keeping London ahead of our global competitors will be a top priority for the capital’s businesses. Access to the European Single Market of 500 million consumers is obviously a major boon to London’s firms, and this survey shows the strong desire of the capital’s firms to remain in a reformed uropean Union.
“Having world-class digital infrastructure and skills will also be the key to unlocking the opportunities presented to the city especially in the booming tech and creative sectors – so we will need to ramp up our investment in these areas.” Adam J. Hetherington, Central London Managing Director, CBRE UK, said: “Ensuring London maintains its attractiveness on a global basis, and indeed outpaces other global cities across North America, Europe and Asia, is critical to its future success. The capital’s connectivity is key; both global occupiers and capital from across all sectors have been flocking to London in recent years and the city has thrived, thanks in part to its safe haven status.” Confidence about the economy has lessened amongst the capital’s firms since September’s uniquely strong showing. A fifth of companies now feel more optimistic about the UK economy over the next six months, and just over a quarter feel the same for their individual business prospects. Over a third of firms ( 6 ) plan to increase headcount, but just over half (53%) plan to hire only where essential. The top concerns for London’s businesses remain retaining their best people and the lack of appropriately skilled staff, as well as uncertainty over the UK’s role in Europe. The capital’s biggest weak spot remains the cost and availability of housing (93%). Road and rail links also require improvement, according to over half of firms ( ). London also helps to drive growth outside of the city, with over three quarters of firms ( ) having suppliers, and over four fifths of businesses (83%) having customers, outside of the capital. As the world gears up for the 2016 Olympic aralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Survey found the London 2012 Olympic aralympic Games acted as a catalyst for regeneration and infrastructure investment (6 ), with more than half of firms (55%) saying the Games boosted tourism.

SAVILLS
Furnishing Your Dreams
with Archie Orr-Ewing Head of Lettings, Savills Notting Hill
In recent years, I think it’s fair to say that the overall quality of lettings properties across London has really improved. Landlords are refurbishing far more often and many people now choose to rent rather than buy, encouraged by the ease and more predictable costs associated with letting rather than owning. Traditionally, most tenants who rent family homes in London would prefer to bring their own furniture, but they are increasingly looking for furnished properties for extra convenience. In fact, relative to other global cities such as Paris and New York, a higher proportion of long-term London tenancies are now furnished; making up 70 per cent of our total local rentals in the last year. With plenty of properties on the market, landlords are understanding that theirs must be the best in class to attract good tenants and strong rent prices; the best presented properties are dramatically outperforming more dated competition. As a result, landlords are increasingly willing to invest in good quality furnishings, knowing it will be well worth it in the long run. Even at lower price points, many landlords rent furniture for viewings to present the property well, whilst keeping their options open to attract a wider range of tenants. At the higher end, many either speak directly to interior designers or enlist the help of Savills Interior Services to ensure their property stands out from the crowd, using features such as colourful artwork and patterned cushions. This is not limited to the most expensive properties; we are marketing four houses in Wellington Close and all, from the cheapest to the most expensive, are dressed to
the same incredibly high standard. In terms of the furnishings themselves, IKEA will no longer cut it; tenants expect furniture that is well made and stylish. While we often advise landlords to keep things neutral, especially when painting the walls, many use pops of colour and character to stand out for the right reasons. A house we recently let on Portobello Road had a fabulous water-proofed mural on a wall of the shower; details like these often make a property more memorable. It is character like this which transforms a house into a home and evokes far more emotion for the applicants when viewing it than empty rooms and walls ever can.

The Life Source of Your Garden with Kate Gould
Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer with more than a decade’s hands-on experience transforming gardens of all sizes and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where she has been awarded three Gold medals. If you would like to know more about our services please contact Kate at kategouldgardens.com
Of all the elements that have borne the test of time in a garden, water has to be high up on the list. From the hanging gardens of Babylon to the formality of Roman pools and onwards in time to the landscape movements’ love of diverting a river or two to create huge lakes for the great and the good; water has played its part with gusto in some of our greatest gardens. As a basic element, water, like fire can be mesmeric but unlike fire it can be completely still and calm as well as wild and energetic. That flexibility means that water can be utilised in many ways in a garden. For quiet areas still, mirror-surfaced pools or wildlife friendly natural ponds provide tranquillity and reflection. These sheets of water echo the sky and create a constantly moving and changing art form in their own right. Fountains, where the sight of the water and the sound it makes lend themselves to more dynamic areas can be tailored to suit the space. The Emperor fountain at Chatsworth in Derbyshire is perfectly scaled for its immense setting
but a version on a smaller (make that, much, much smaller) scale will work for both domestic and commercial projects where the tinkling sound of the water can help to mask the hum of ambient urban noise (providing you do not find the tinkling too off putting). There are no real hard and fast rules for water in the garden. It simply transcends taste and fashion too much to be typecast and can be melded to whatever style of garden you have. That said, it is potentially one of the most controversial elements in a new design especially for a scheme suited to a young family. As far as possible if water and children are to be considered together then the water should be as child safe as possible either by having no standing water present above ground or by installing a metal safety grill just under the surface of any visible water to limit its depth. If you are creating a natural pond for wildlife then the same ‘safety’ precautions can be taken not only for small children but also to create ledges and steps that wildlife can use to get in and out of

the water by - it sounds odd but if the water level is too low against the sides of the pond small animals and amphibians will not be able to get out. Netting your pond will also help protect any fish you may have from sharp-eyed Herons. However you chose to use water in your garden a UV filter is generally essential (except in the case of naturally filtered ponds) to ensure a crystal clear effect. To help this process try to site your feature as far as possible from falling leaves and debris to help keep it clean and should your feature require a pump it should go without saying that a qualified electrician connects it for you. Water and electricity in the wrong hands are simply a recipe for disaster, if not time spent in A&E or worse. Low maintenance, water features are definitely not but they really are worth their extravagance in a design for the timeless elegance they bring as well as their ability to create a sense of serenity - something that in our modern fast track age is to be cherished. kategouldgardens.com
