Open Air Theatre

Regent’s Park’s favourite summertime attraction returns A London summertime institution in itself, the glorious Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre returns for its 2016 Summer Season this month, kicking off with Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild (13 May – 12 June). Set in the picturesque Royal Park, its steeply raked auditorium is one of the largest in London with 1,250 seats, yet those who attend say it is one of the most intimate. Over 140,000 people attend the four annual productions shown between May and September, with many seeing their very first theatre production at the event. The magical atmosphere is created by the buzz of people setting up hampers on the picnic lawn, drinking Pimm’s in the bar as the fairy light twinkle in the trees before settling down to for yet another remarkable performance. Built upon a core of outstanding dramatic credentials, the aim of the theatre is to present bold and dynamic productions that stimulate the senses. Weather and climate of course add to the experience, making the relationship between performer, text and

audience a truly unique event at every performance. Productions this season include Henry V and Pride and Prejudice. Also on the programme for the 2016 summer season, presented by The Luna Cinema, the beautiful London landmark will play host to the epic 1993 film Jurassic Park and the 80’s classic, Top Gun, which celebrates its 30th anniversary, along with two live stand-up comedy nights. Kicking off the alternative season on Sunday 3 July are the Comedy Store Players with their sell-out sketches, skits and spontaneity, featuring Marcus Brigstocke, Josie Lawrence, Neil Mullarkey, Lee Simpson, Andy Smart and Richard Vranch. On Sunday 7 August, there will be more comedy with Live At Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, presented by The Invisible Dot Ltd, featuring the mouth-made musical mashups and audacious sonic skills of headliner Beardyman and author/comic/natural charmer Sara Pascoe. More acts will be announced soon. Booking for these events is now open.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show Embrace Spring with the world famous show 24-28 May Nothing says springtime like the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Awash with an array of dazzling colours and remarkable themes, the show has been hailed as the world’s most famous gardening event and will take place here in the Capital on 24-28 May. To get you in the mood, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced a host of plant trends and stand-out themes for this year’s show. Peonies are a design favourite this year and roses feature prominently. Other popular flowers include alliums, achillea, foxgloves, irises, lavender and geum. Ferns are proving popular with some designers, while others have turned to plants such as Bracken and Horsetail to add beauty to a garden. Oak trees are a predominant feature being used by designers such as Cleve West. Guy Barter, RHS Chief Horticulturalist, said: “Dramatically exotic peonies are set to be leading actors this year and have proved to be an interesting and exciting plant choice for designers such as Matthew Wilson and Hay Hwang. Roses are also popular, with Jo Thompson featuring the beautiful bloom. Rose-related enquiries topped our RHS advisory list this year and are much loved by gardeners. “Pastel predominates as a colour, but there is a healthy amount of green seen in many of the gardens, with rich plantings of ferns. Ferns don’t tend to be readily stocked in plant centres, so I wonder

if this will now change as people are inspired by what they see at the Show. “A real point of interest is that so many oaks feature in plans – an iconic UK tree at a time when so much ash is suffering and oak processionary moth is moving into the countryside and tree disease Xylella fastidiosa, albeit one adapted to olives, is spreading in Europe – a subliminal concern for this tree perhaps? “Based on our Gardening Advice service, our members may well be quite surprised to see some weeds in RHS Chelsea gardens – but everyone knows a weed is just a plant in the wrong place.” Elsewhere new plants will be introduced such as David Austin Roses new English shrub rose, ‘Roald Dahl’, which is named in honour of the world’s number one storyteller and marks 100 years since his birth as part of the official Roald Dahl 100 celebrations. Appropriately the blooms are peach-coloured, acknowledging Roald’s ‘James and the Giant Peach’, which was his first literary success in 1961. The ‘Roald Dahl’ rose is a remarkably freeflowering rose with the blooms produced almost continuously. The ‘Princess Charlotte’ chrysanthemum by Deliflor will also be launching in honour of the royal baby. Last year, the RHS Greening Grey Britain campaign was launched in response to the worrying trend of paving over front gardens. The growth of grey space, and decline of green, aggravates a range of environmental challenges, while the domination of grey,

hard surfaces has been shown to have a negative impact on our health and wellbeing. The RHS has teamed-up with award-winning designer AnnMarie Powell to champion the health and wellbeing benefits of horticulture. The charity believes everybody should have access to a garden and the joy and happiness it brings. Ann-Marie’s garden celebrates the wide range of plants and tactics gardeners can use to promote health and happiness. Her garden includes: cacti, fruit and vegetables, wildflowers, fruit trees, herbs, a bug house, a kitchen garden, a compost bin, hanging baskets, house-plants, seedlings, and many more ‘take-home’ ideas. Other exhibits that follow this theme include RHS Ambassador Jekka McVicar’s ‘A Modern Apothecary’ which champions the healing power of herbs, Chris Beardshaw’s collaboration with Great Ormand Street Hospital and ‘The Garden Bed’ by Alison Doxey and Stephen Welch. RHS Chelsea provides an international stage for horticulturists and there’s even more of a theatrical feel to the show this year. At first glance, the ‘Harrods Eccentric British Garden’ designed by horticultural showman, Diarmuid Gavin, appears to be a beautifully gentle garden of terraces and topiary, but all of a sudden, the garden puts on a performance with mechanical buzzings and whirrings, a tower that erects, box balls that bob up and down and conical bay trees that begin to twirl. Leading designer Peter Eustance has created an Artisan garden for disability charity Papworth Trust. Inspired by world renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and the ‘sea music’ produced by the women of the Vanuatu islands, Peter’s garden becomes a musical instrument. A water marimba – a giant set of musical bars - generate an acoustic pulse, while soft planting on either side of green oak monoliths will create a diaphanous, dancing screen that will sway to the music, with floral soloists adding to the horticultural concerto. Although RHS Chelsea represents the very forefront of horticultural design it is also a showcase for the traditional horticultural landscape.

Hay Hwang has designed the ‘Smart Garden for LG Electronics’. With an alternative approach to reclaiming our outdoor spaces, Hay’s futuristic garden aims to bring technology to the forefront of design with lighting, water features and audiovisual aspects of the garden controlled simply by the touch of a button. Other modern gardens include Paul Martin’s ‘The Garden of Mindful Living’ which represents a contemporary modern garden designed to be a calm space to reboot after a hectic day. This year, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) will celebrate the 90th birthday of HM The Queen with floral arches at both the Bull Ring and London Gate entrances to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show sponsored by M&G Investments. The primary arch, by leading designer Shane Connolly, will span the iconic Bull Ring gate entrance, situated on the bank of the river Thames, while its sister arch will welcome visitors to the London Gate. The Bull Ring arch will be made using all British blooms donated by UK growers and will be installed with the help of design students from several UK colleges. As the Royal florist responsible for directing the horticultural elements at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and who holds a Royal Warrant of Appointment to HRH the Prince of Wales and HM The Queen, Shane is no stranger to Royal floral design and is looking forward to this new challenge. Shane said “I’m honoured and delighted to have been asked to design this archway for HM The Queen’s Birthday and really want it to showcase the beauty and range of British grown plants and flowers and the skills of the British flower and plant growers. Having students of floral design to help install it will really be the icing on the cake. It will be the best of British Birthdays for HM The Queen!” Award-winning artist Joseph Massie provides another unique floral display for 2016. ‘Rosa’, a hanging installation beneath the Rock Bank restaurant, that connects Main Avenue and Ranalegh Way, will offer a sensory, immersive experience, and will feature over five thousand fresh rose blooms.

The Art of Design

Sarah Verey, Princess Yachts My philosophy, always, is to create something the equal of anything you’re likely to find on Bond Street in London’ says Sarah Verey, Director of Creative Design at Princess Yachts. An impressive statement, but also one that shows in her work. At Princess Yachts International, pretty much every finish on board ship, from the gentle satin or gloss timber of the cabinetry and the exquisite tiles on the bathroom floor right down to the door handles and the throws on the bed have to come with Sarah Verey’s approval. With inspiration from across the design world,

from boutique hotels to design shows, and contacts throughout the fashion houses of London and the continent, Sarah and her team’s input starts right at the planning stage of a new model. Her brief is to ensure that every Princess motor yacht not only exudes the quiet class and exemplary style for which the marque is world renowned, but is fine-tuned to reflect the concept of each craft. A high performance sports yacht such as the V72 will warrant a subtly different accent compared with the studied majesty of a 40M yacht for example. And of course just looking fantastic is not enough, the materials that make up a yacht have to do far more. Upholstery needs to stand up and face the elements of sun cream and wet swimming costumes; cabinet doors need to be easy to open when required, yet stay firmly shut when not; and what appears to be free-standing lighting needs not only to be fixed, but permanently wired to the ships electrics. Surface finishes have to be able to withstand the harsh heat of some of the warmest locations on the planet. This is just a drop in the ocean, all that attention to detail doesn’t end once a new boat is signed off for production. The Princess Design Studio includes a team of design consultants based at Princess’ Mayfair office where all customers purchasing yachts of eighty-eight feet and above are assigned their own design consultant, and it’s that person’s job not just to understand and then realise the customer’s dream, but to also suggest and inspire in order to create a craft that is a perfect fit for that particular owner’s taste and lifestyle. This blank canvas upon which to design that dream is both expansive and expanding, and the consultant, who also boasts links to top design houses such as Hermes and Fendi, can help with choices of everything from fish knives to furniture. Sarah points to a recent example where a customer wanted a specific grade of high quality leather for the yacht’s furniture. In response, Princess built furniture carcasses which were dispatched to Alma, a long established leading leather specialist in London. There the very finest leather and suede were lovingly fitted and beautifully stitched for a truly bespoke finish. Another yacht was fitted out in conjunction with Fendi Casa, who was deeply involved in the conception and build of the craft in order to ensure that the bespoke furniture created for the client was a perfect fit. It’s not just what the client sees and touches, Wifi systems, integrated AV equipment, navigation suites and much more are all tailored to owner requirements. But don’t for one moment think that such attention to detail is purely the preserve of the Princess superyacht buyer. Precisely the same attention to detail is applied across the entire range. There may be less ultimate choice of layout with a smaller boat and hence less requirement for a design consultant to guide the purchasing process, but the quality, craftsmanship and design integrity remain the same; each created by the exact same team responsible for the ‘M Class’ yachts. There is a myriad of options for woodwork, fabrics, work tops and flooring, allowing a buyer to stamp his or her individualism and create a look as personal as their signature, whatever the model. Indeed, lessons learned in the more compact environs of smaller craft often percolate up through the range as much as the style and quality of the larger yachts filters down, ensuring a cohesive design language right across the Princess family. princess.co.uk

YACHTS

Size Matters Heesen Yachts has proudly launched the largest yacht in its fleet to date: Y/N 17470 (aka Project Kometa) now christened Galactica Super Nova. Not only the biggest yacht built by Heesen Yachts to date, the Galactica Super Nova is also one of the top 200 largest yachts in the world and one of the fastest yachts for her size. Utilising the revolutionary Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) technology devised by van Oossanen Naval Architects, which Heesen was the first to put into production, the addition of a third engine to power a booster jet, allows the yacht to reach a top speed of more than 30 knots. Heesen has been building fast yachts since 1978 and during that time they have become world leader in the field. With exterior lines by Espen Øino and interior design by Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design, Galactica Super Nova is both an evolution of Heesen’s long experience in the superyacht sector and also the result of a specific research into what the market wants and expects. The Galactica Super Nova is the result of what is perceived as a growing market demand for fast transit speeds, seamlessly combined with the high level of comfort and space traditionally associated with displacement yachts. Beyond her tremendous efficiency and high speed, Galactica Super Nova epitomizes luxury on water. Having tender and toys (including a quad ski) housed in the garage located in the forward part of the hull, the owners and their guests have the opportunity to enjoy a lifestyle closer to the water. Other key features include a 13.500 litres pool on the main deck aft with contra flow system for swimming, a waterfall and integrated Jacuzzi for relaxing, while the glass bottom of the pool allows natural light to filter into

the beach club below. Forward on the main deck, a touch-andgo helipad facilitates guests’ arrival on board and doubles in an outdoor cinema that perfectly completes the luxurious lifestyle on board this superyacht. The exterior matches the impressive facilities with the design by world renowned designer and naval architect Espen Øino, who worked on a pre-established engineering platform provided by Heesen’s in-house experts. Espen Øino has been able to develop a profile that celebrates Heesen’s DNA but at the same time brings in new design elements that make Galactica Super Nova stand out in Heesen’s galaxy. Twelve guests can be accommodated in six staterooms with the master suite on the main deck forward, four guests cabins on the lower deck and a VIP found on the wheel house deck aft. The owner appointed acclaimed Dutch designer Sinot to create the light, pure and well-balanced interior with a sophisticated equilibrium between monochromic and soft colors. This allows for a relaxed and informal atmosphere that’s understated and inviting yet extremely refined. A wide range of leathers – from galuchat to very soft calfskin – have been used as well as a variety of stones such as calacatta luccicoso and various onyx. The stand-out feature in the interior is the central staircase with a crystal elevator. Steel, nickel, chrome, wood and leather flow together to form a magnificent and grandiose architectural helix. Galactica Super Nova has been extensively tested in the North Sea before being delivered to her owners this month. After her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Montenegro, she will cruise in the Mediterranean for the summer season before finally making her public debut at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Yacht Timers Ken Kessler It never ceases to amaze both watch lovers and cynics how the industry continues to revive complications that have most assuredly been superseded by electronics, if not quite undermined by apps. Among the more specialised and rarefied of complications is the yacht timer, which actually has more to do with sailing boats of a competitive nature than some dot.com billionaire’s or Russian oligarch’s floating gin palace. Yacht racing has its own requirements, unlike horse-racing or motorracing, where the competitors all start at the same time, either with the dropping of a flag, the changing of a light or the firing of a pistol. Because of the staggered starting times in yacht racing, the crews of the various boats have to prepare for their starts with precise intervals timed to indicate what needs to be done in the 10 or 15 minutes before leaving the starting line. As much is jeopardised by a false start in yachting as in any other timed sport. The crew members need to move their boats to the correct starting positions, and they must do so without prematurely crossing the line. Mishaps also include smacking into a rival craft, and it may result in penalties for premature departures. With competitions such as the America’s Cup, millions can be at stake. Based on the timing operations of a chronograph, yacht (or regatta) watches modify one of the sub-dials or counters to indicate the required intervals. This is a practice that dates back to the earliest wristwatch chronographs, that of

20

COLUMN highlighting specific intervals on the subsidiary dials, for example, emphasising 3 and 5 minute periods, popular during the years when long-distance phone calls cost a small fortune and a few seconds over could increase charges by a huge amount. For maritime use, dials could even indicate the tides, as with Heuer’s hugely collectible Mareograph, whereas competitive boating demanded a modified chronograph that counts down the starting sequence for boat races. Over the years, such watches have appeared in the catalogues of Bulgari, Corum, Atlantic, Heuer, Hublot, Omega, Louis Vuitton, Rolex, Seiko, Citizen, Girard-Perregaux, Maurice Lacroix, Rolex, Panerai and enough others to inspire a book for collectors. Panerai’s have a special place in the pantheon because the company has, for some years, sponsored an historic regatta

series. Its models are usually limited editions, their desirability enhanced by a history that is entirely maritime-related: every Panerai ever made was manufactured to survive underwater. Among the most desired is the Luminor 1950 Flyback Regatta PAM00526, a 47mm watch offered in titanium and with flyback seconds. Equally renowned for its relationship to the sea (and to Panerai, for that matter) is Rolex, makers of the most famous diving watch on the planet, the Submariner. The brand’s 44mm Yacht-Master II counts down from the 10-minute gun and can also be re-synchronized to the five-minute gun for greater accuracy. This regatta chronograph features what is the world’s first programmable countdown with a mechanical memory, and uses the rotating bezel to set and synchronise the timing.

21

KEN KESSLER

Alpina’s 44mm Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown with 10-minute counting employs a display from the past, the countdown appearing in an below the 12 o’clock position, ending at the 3 o’clock point. The colours visible through the aperture change from blue to red, corresponding to 10 to 1, leading to the fluorescent START indicator. This watch also features a unidirectional bezel, but one that is graduated not from 1-12 or 1-60 but to 360 degrees, to act as a tactical planner. Like all yacht timers, the Alpina is properly water-resistant, in this case, to 300m. For IWC, the regatta timing aspect of its 45.4mm Reference 3902 Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” is more subtle than the rest. This timepiece features a flyback function and aggregate timing of up to 12 hours, shown by an analogue display with two hands in a sub-dial. To provide a countdown facility, the sub-dial’s chapter ring is marked in red from 1-10. Bremont is the latest to introduce a yacht timer, a natural progression considering that the brand is now among the sponsors of the defenders of the America’s Cup, Oracle Team USA. Bremont is also the Cup’s Official Timing Partner. This year, the team will compete against five others in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in the Middle East, the USA, Europe and Asia - and remember: Louis Vuitton itself is no stranger to regatta watches. Marking this collaboration, Bremont has adapted one of its chronographs to suit regatta timing after consultation with the team. The Regatta AC and Regatta OTUSA watch movements

incorporate two unique countdown regatta chronograph movements, and have been designed to show both a numerical 15-minute display countdown and a 5-minute start time. This is in addition to the full complement of chronograph functions, including a 12-hour counter and date function. Both are limited editions: the Regatta OTUSA produced with a choice of black or white dials; only 235 of each will be made. The Regatta AC watch series will consist of 235 in polished steel and 135 in rose gold. As is Bremont’s habit of incorporating historically important “bits” into certain models, among them parts of HMS Victory and the Wright Brothers’ aircraft, the America’s Cup connection means that carbon fibre from the foils of the winning 2013 Oracle Team USA AC72 yacht will be incorporated into each of the crowns. In speaking for Bremont, Co-Founder Giles English also describes the challenge presented by regatta timing. “We wanted to build a set of mechanical watches that were specifically designed for the sailing community, and the regatta function is so useful for anyone who races. Marrying functionality with design is not easy in mechanical watches, but it was important to us that the watches were built for purpose and not just for the club house.” On a slightly sarcastic note, coming from a collector of aviator watches who is not a pilot, the yacht timing function only has one purpose. One would like to think that the only people who buy these specialised instruments actually sail. If, on the other hand, you simply want to pretend to the unwary that you own a yacht, buy a silly captain’s hat. And get an anchor tattoo.

Breitling 1884 A tribute to Breitling’s rich history, the Navitimer 1884 limited series combines the famous 1952 aviation slide rule with a calendar featuring a pointer-type date display and twin day/ month apertures for which the brand was renowned in the 1940s. A modern and original face for fans of exclusive watches. 1884 is first and foremost a date: that of the founding of Breitling by Léon Breitling, a keen devotee of chronographs and precision instruments. 1884 has now become a watch, a limited series of the famous Navitimer perfectly summing up Breitling’s vocation and its range of passions. The conquest of the air, with the circular aviation slide rule that made the Navitimer the cult watch among pilots and dedicated aviation enthusiasts. Useful, user-friendly functions, with a complete calendar displaying the day and the month through twin apertures at 12 o’clock, and the date by means of a central pointer tipped with a moon crescent: a system known as Datora that became a 1940s Breitling bestseller. The watch features technical and powerful designs, with an all-black dial made using the “par épagne” technique on a solid silver base enlivened with red accents, with performance delivered

through a selfwinding chronograph movement chronometercertified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), the benchmark in terms of reliability and precision. This model features an interesting practical detail in the shape of a 9 o’clock small seconds subdial providing an additional 24hour “military-time” display much favored by pilots and which also facilitates calendar adjustment by distinguishing between day and night. Issued in a 1,884-piece limited series, this Navitimer 1884 stands out with its generous 46mm case accentuating the character of the design, as well as optimizing dial readability. In addition to the choice of a bracelet or a leather or crocodile leather strap, this model is also available with a new black rubber strap featuring an aircraft tire-tread motif. Excalibur

Striking New Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon For the many watch lovers who have become keen fans of the impressive Excalibur Spider collection since its launch in 2015, Roger Dubuis have added two dynamic new interpretations to the story. Acknowledged as the pioneer of contemporary skeleton calibres, as well as a specialist in architectural and technical mechanics, Roger Dubuis proudly showcases both these claims to fame in distinctively colourful new versions of the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon. Available in ‘Fiery Red’ and ‘True Blue’ complete with black and white rubber straps respectively, these pieces are striking in appearance as well as horological complexity. Skeleton-work motifs, with their geometrical intricacy and powerful symbolism, are a recurrent theme in nature that is picked up in the watchmaking world by paring down components to essentials while maintaining their functionality and enhancing their aesthetic appeal. The Roger Dubuis Astral Skeleton approach is based on an exclusive multi-level, starshaped construction reminiscent of modern cityscapes, while enhancing the clarity of the dials through its star tips pointing directly to hour-markers. By promoting transparency, visibility and sculptural effects, the Spider principle offers an ideal expression of the superlative quality and highend finishes implied by the Poin on de Gen ve certification: a reliable guarantee of exclusivity, origin, expertise, performance and durability. The RD505SQ calibre powering the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon models also features two other Roger Dubuis technical characteristics that have become easily recognisable signatures: the micro-rotor and the flying tourbillon with its carriage shaped like a Celtic cross. These fascinating creations are perfect embodiments of the Manufacture’s consistent ability to innovate and surprise. The speedometer-style ring surrounding the tourbillon and serving as a small seconds counter further contributes to the highoctane motorsports style, while ensuring seamless integration into the skeleton work and avoiding any visual overload. A typical Roger Dubuis blend of practicality and iconoclastic aesthetics. Optimal legibility in any lighting conditions is ensured by the Superluminova enhancing the tips of the hands and the applied screws on the lange.

Style Master Meister Pilot Following the successful launch of the Meister Pilot Event Edition, the series model of the Meister Pilot is now also on board. The unmistakable design and mechanical independence make the timepiece the perfect wrist-borne co-pilot. The distinctive design elements of the legendary Junghans pilot watch from the 1950s are also to be found in the series model of the Meister Pilot. The timepiece combines these with the smooth and stylish design of the current Meister collection. The elegant and discreet design of the case and the flowing shape of the lugs focus the attention of the pilot on the large time display. The domed sapphire crystal provides an ideal view of the clear luminescent numerals and distinctive hands. The watch enables good legibility, even in poor lighting conditions and at night. On the dial itself there is a bicompax display, the two totalisers of which are laid out on the 3-9 axis. The high demands placed on timekeeping by aviation were first addressed by Junghans in the 1930s, when the company produced onboard clocks for air traffic use. The classic instrument appearance of the cockpit was also reflected in the legendary Bundeswehr chronograph of 1955. The design of the Meister Pilot harks back to this: on the bidirectional rotating bezel the 12 distinctive, concave notches ensure a good grip as well as the unmistakable appearance of the timepiece. The screwed case back features a distinctive element: a specially-designed compass rose, which incorporates the symbolism of classic aviation in the form of an artificial horizon. The riveted leather strap ensures a secure fit on the wrist. The particular construction of the front assembly lends the timepiece an unusual elegance for a pilot watch - and the lightness required for take-off.

Keeping ahead of the Curv Baselworld provided the perfect stage on which to present the latest engineering innovation from Bulova. Their new Curv collection delivers the world’s first curved chronograph movement. Many before them have crafted curved cases, however the movement has remained the same. Now, with their high-performance quartz movement - vibrating at 262kHz this takes the place of the previous Ultra High Frequency (UHF) title - Bulova have created a complete 12-piece collection from a stainless steel bracelet dress watch to the standout technical piece which comes in the shape of the touchstones style featuring an exhibition case back and see-through dial with titanium and steel case with a black strap in rugged rubber. Jeffrey Cohen, Bulova president, said: “Bulova understands that staying in the game means staying ahead of the curve, with an innovative mindset that leads from one success to the next. Bulova CURV reimagines what a watch should be. It is the perfect synthesis of avant-garde thinking, expert craftsmanship and superior quality - the hallmarks of Bulova’s creativity since 1875.”

Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah

Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite ewellery. fficial agents for many of the world s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on iamonds precious stones. Established in 1 2, ew Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.

There are older brands as well as those that perhaps carry more veneration from the more scholarly watch collectors but there is singularly no other brand that has influenced the modern watch industry quite like Cartier. From pioneering a worldwide distribution to flagship boutiques in important cities and continuously furnishing both stars and royalty, not just in bygone eras tinged with nostalgia but to the very present far more brand focused world of celebrity. Cartier’s jewellery has always been synonymous with luxury and their watches have equalled this sense of aspiration.

Even if we don’t involve the ridiculously famous Tank series in any incarnation, Cartier have delivered some of the most iconic watches ever made; from the Santos family to the Crash watches and even in their recent super complications, Cartier’s watchmaking prowess has never been in doubt. The only question mark occasionally indicated is given the natural ratio of ladies watches over mens, is the brand a little too effeminate Despite the very masculine models that have been released such as the Pasha Seatimer with market changing rubber coated bracelets to the quite exquisite case detailing of the Roadster series, it was the 100th anniversary of the Santos model that firmly changed the perspective of mens watches from Cartier. The aptly named Santos 100 was bigger and brasher than previous models with an unashamedly in your face oversized bezel highlighting the signature Santos screws and offering no date so as not to besmirch a very clean dial. Furthermore, the ADLC coated (Amorphous diamond like Carbon) versions were particularly well received. Continuing this legacy of larger and very unapologetically sporty models saw Cartier release the Calibre de Cartier, which was the first model (besides the Tank MC) to offer on mass their own in-house 1904CH MC movement. Overall, the watch was welcomed as a solid modern sports model that could be worn equally well both dressed up and down but kept well in line with Cartier’s expected blueprint. It was the evolution of this collection to the Calibre Diver model that really broke the predefined mould of what one would expect from the brand. Delivered at an unsurprising 42mm in diameter, the dial carries the signature over sized twelve roman numerals and a depressed sub dial signifying the

housing of the 1904 calibre along with a useful date window. However, it is the ceramic rotating bezel and rubber strap that really bring it in line with the majority of high end diving watches, which have been particularly popular in the last couple of years. Some consumer orientated thought has gone into the rubber strap in particular as rather than just adding on a plain rubber strap, Cartier have gone the Breguet route and pattered the surface to add character to an often under appreciated but essential part of the watch. Initially offered in steel, steel and rose gold (both available on bracelets too) as well as solid rose gold, the ADLC version soon followed given the success of its Santos predecessor. This model has been, for us, the most popular of the Calibre family. Be it the dark, stealthy look of the all black version, which is still very legible or the glamorous Rose Gold trim added on the bezel and crown for the bi-colour model; this part of the collection is for lack of better words…on trend! All black watches have become, like the colour black in general, a stalwart

of the fashion industry now, offering a sleekness and discretion sometimes missing in their more obvious counterparts. The ADLC Calibre Diver does this better than most. It takes the formulaic black coated cases of its peers and adds a stronger level of coating ensuring the watch remains black for longer - we have had none back yet for any coating issues since their inception. Add a dependable in-house movement, screw down crown guaranteeing water resistance and fashionable rubber strap, you already have the basics of a good modern sports watch. Now add the value and integrity that the name Cartier delivers to the ensemble, this creates perhaps the perfect timepiece for all your Summer adventures! The Calibre de Cartier collection in all its various guises is available in-store for you to view; New Cavendish Jewellers has been an authorised agent for Cartier for coming close to thirty years. Please feel free to visit us at the boutique or contact us for further details.

FELLOWS AUCTIONEERS

The Depreciation Game with Adrian Hailwood drian has over 20 years e perience in the lu ury goods industry with names such as Mappin & Webb, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Breguet. He is a Director of Fellows Auctioneers with particular responsibility for the Watch epartment.

Depreciation is one of those facts of life that we all have to accept. Most of the things that we buy in life will start to lose value from the moment that we hand over the money. First there is the VAT, nothing to do with the item’s intrinsic worth, just an additional contribution to the UK Treasury. Second, the item is no longer new, that initial buzz of opening the packaging for the first time can only happen once and any subsequent owner will want compensation for missing out on the thrill. Third, is obsolescence, as items become older they may go out of fashion or be superseded by a newer model; with technology, support for the device may be discontinued rendering it worthless. This is all before we factor in wear, tear and incidental damage. This is the norm for most of our consumer goods but there are a few asset classes that buck the trend - including jewellery and watches. Jewellery will have a commodity value that underpins its market price. This gives a minimum price that the object can fall to, based on the cost of the metal and stones. Fashion will add desirability on top of this - or not dependant on the style, quality and era. Jewellery from the top designer houses will always sell for more than comparable generic examples, but this has to be balanced against the eye-watering fall from the original purchase price. Of course if the jewellery has interesting provenance or a particularly rare stone set into it, the collectability of the piece can send the resale value rocketing up if the competition to own it is fierce enough. So if a ring has its gold-weight and diamond to fall back on, what do we make of a steel watch with no metal value that may retail for thousands Watches are a very complex area with residual values based on brand, material, functions and age. All watch brands with a very few exceptions will depreciate immediately after

purchase. There are a few such as the grand complication Patek Philippes which are in such short supply and high demand that they can be immediately sold for a profit. The brands themselves frown on this and if you do it, they may not sell you anything in the future. The main question is how far the value falls and whether it will come back up. If you are re-selling watches into the market, the only factor that counts is popularity with buyers. Well-known, highly regarded brands will fare best, while niche pieces can be ignored, no matter how much of a saving is offered from the original retail

30

price. This goes some way to explain the dominance of Rolex and Patek Philippe in the watch auction world. They are instantly recognisable brands that have a great track record so their residual value is buoyed by that desirability. Highly gem-set or very complex watches from unknown brands can demand huge retail values due to the cost of production but once bought, they depreciate like a stone. There is a way to escape the depreciation trap, and that is to ‘buy at the bottom’. This means avoiding the issue of VAT, allowing someone else to experience the joy of first ownership and then letting the market decide the true second hand value. To do this you need to buy at a specialist auction - specialist because you need to be sure that the items, whether jewellery or watches, are described correctly and are as they should be. Fellows Auctioneers, based in Birmingham, have established themselves as the most prolific source of watches and jewellery in the country with more items offered for sale than any other UK auction house. Teams of qualified and experienced specialists inspect all the lots before sale and the comprehensive descriptions let you know exactly what you are getting. With three jewellery sales and one watch sale every month, you shouldn’t have to wait long before something catches

your attention. If you have your eye on a popular watch brand or a piece of jewellery from a top designer you should be able to save a significant sum against the retail price. Underpinned by their general appeal, such items should not fall much further if subsequently offered for sale and as the retail prices for the top brands march ever upwards, the second hand values are dragged along with them - meaning that you may make a profit in the long run. Should your tastes run to the rare vintage collectable end of the scale then there is every chance that your jewel or watch may cost you more than the original buyer paid, but rest assured, if the piece is that desirable, you won’t be losing money should you want to move it on again as both the vintage jewellery and watch markets are buoyant. The best deals are to be had if you choose not to follow the mainstream. If you prefer the unusual or unknown, then someone else’s depreciation nightmare becomes your bargain. An unfashionable jewel or a heavily gem set watch could be yours for a fraction of what the boutique charged, sometimes no more than the commodity value of the constituent metal and stones. With deals like this on offer, why buy anywhere else

Made in China “Mermaid” beat Kung Fu Panda 3 ur financial insider reviews the global markets

China’s movie industry is catching up with Hollywood and Bollywood. A good old love story between a Mermaid and a billionaire in today’s China. Mix together a message of environmental protection, Jim Carrey style acting and Mr Bean sense of humor and the results are USD 552.5 million box office pretty much all in Chinese speaking markets. The Mermaid was directed and produced by Stephen Chow who was in fact born in 1962, the same year as Jim Carrey. Stephen Chow also directed and produced Kung Fu Hustle (2004) and Shaolin Soccer (2001). The film released during Chinese New Year this year beat Kung Fu Panda 3 and the Revenant in the box office. This column is of course not about movies, but the success of “The Mermaid” reflects the strength of China’s domestic economy and its transformation to a service industry driven economy. China cannot compete against the Frontier Markets such as Vietnam on cheap labor, just like Great Britain had to evolve from heavy industries such as coal mining and steel plants. So when the media says the Chinese economy is slowing down, it is a very general statement. The labour and resource intensive, environmentally damaging industries like the coal mine owners in Guangxi are suffering whilst the Alibaba headquarters in Hangzhou are full of young IT talents chasing their dreams. China’s 6.7 GDP growth in Q1 2016 is the results of a cliff hanging resources sector and rocket growth in services sector such as e-commerce, entertainment and tourism. The Chinese stock market has lagged behind Russia and Brazil this year but there is still time to get on the train. China A shares indices such as CSI300 includes 300 listed companies and is a good representation of the overall China A shares stock market. Hang Seng China Enterprises Index “HSCEI” represents 40 large Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong Exchange is also a good representation and Hong Kong is a more accessible market. The “B” and the “R” in BRIC have been on fire in a good way, stock market and currency wise. Brazil Ibovespa index year to date return is +23.72% as of 21 April, 2016 and Brazilian Real strengthened against USD by 10.89 . Russian MICE +10.71 and Russian Ruble strengthened against USD by 8.8 this year. Well, the numbers look good and showed nice recovery after last years correction. The Brazil story is very different to Russia. Investors are putting money on a potential change of leadership in Brazil but change does not necessarily equal economic growth. Typically, the country that hosts the Olympics empties their war chest to put on the games. There is some ground to consider buy on dream and sell on fact in the Brazil investment story. The Russian economy has been bleeding mainly due to the oil price collapse and it was looking very concerning in 2015 as the Russian government tried to defend the Rubles. In the end, Russian government accepted the currency market was like an ocean and no

one could fight against the force of natural. Beside a falling Rubles and stock market, the government had to deal with the conversations with US and Euro over Ukraine and sending troops to Syria. Against expectations, some Russian companies survived the storm and emerged stronger. Typically, these are export driven businesses with cost in Rubles and revenue in USD or Euro. For example, a steelmaker like Severstal saw its profit margins rising to a record level in six years. Its share price rallied from RUB 600 level at the end of last year to RUB 800 in April. Even the Russian banks are enjoying the sunshine. Sberbank has gone up more than 20 since its dip in January. The “I” and “C” in BRIC are behind. India Nifty index cover 50 blue chips and its year to date return is down 0.43% and Indian Rupree has depreciated against USD by 0.36 . India attracted USD 63 billion worth of Foreign Direct Investment (“FDI”) projects in 2015, overtaking China. This is the first time India has topped the FDI chart. So the money has gone in through direct investment although not through buying listed company shares. China CSI300 index that covers 300 stocks listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges is down 15.29 year to date and the Chinese Yuan has strengthened against USD by 0.18 . This makes China the worst performing market among the BRIC year to date.

The Cosmetic Sculptor Dr Foued Hamza, internationally renowned cosmetic surgeon practising at Queen Anne Street Medical Centre, off Harley Street, London.

Dr Foued Hamza, a cosmetic sculptor with an international reputation, is ranked as one of the best practitioners in his field and has been practising cosmetic surgery for over 20 years. He is currently consulting at Queen Anne Street Medical Centre, off Harley Street. He welcomes the latest cosmetic surgery guidelines issued by the General Medical Council (GMC), which are being implemented to protect patients against rogue practitioners putting profit before patient safety. He says, “This is positive news for the cosmetic surgery industry as these new guidelines will help protect patients and differentiate reputable, responsible consultants in the industry who work hard to maintain a high quality reputation. My whole team is entirely devoted to offering the highest levels of comfort and safety for clients. “Anticipating these changes, I established a full patient care procedure at my practice. From the first point of contact, I always maintain a close individual relationship with each of my patients to offer them bespoke, direct and honest advice, without judgment, while listening to their issues and desires to understand fully and take into consideration their requirements. “I work within the protocol based care guidelines according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) and British Association of Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and ensure that I manage each specific client’s needs from the first consultation until the end of their aftercare. All patients will benefit from personalised medical support and total care. “I always ensure that I have at least two meetings with the client prior to the operation, including on the day before the surgery to confirm that they have understood everything in full, that I have taken all of their expectations into consideration and warned them of the potential risks. I also provide a consent form which

is reviewed several times before the procedure. It’s imperative that consultants give the patient time to think about the operation so that if he/she decides to go ahead with it, they are completely convinced that it is what they want to do, as some treatments are life changing.” Through years of studying the relationship between the beauty of the body, the harmony of its curves and perfecting his skill, Dr. Hamza has developed a specialist sculpting technique. His leading silhouette remodelling through liposuction with fat reinjection for buttocks, body and breasts, is a precursor to the fat transfer technique. His signature Brazilian Butt Lift can help a woman enhance her derriere into a natural-looking, voluptuous shape and size. Dr. Hamza does not perform this procedure simply to provide women with “bigger butts.” With his specialist sculpting technique, the patient’s own fat is used to accentuate the curves that she may already have, and/or would like to gain. As no foreign objects are placed in the body, it is the most natural and safest way to augment the buttocks. Typical candidates for this procedure would be women who have flat or sagging buttocks or someone who has had significant weight loss which has changed the shape of this body part. Fat transfer surgery is performed either under general anaesthetic or under local anaesthetic with sedation, and is treated as a day case, so the patient will usually not have to stay overnight. The procedure usually takes one hour. Following the operation, there would be a quick recovery with no cuts and minimal scarring. Dr. Hamza will remove the amount of fat necessary (as classic liposuction) to provide the patient with her desired shape and size. He generally uses the extracted fat from the abdomen, thighs or hips. After liposuction, the fat suctioned from these areas is carefully processed and purified by decanting and centrifugation, and then transferred to the buttocks. Dr. Hamza takes the whole body into account before reshaping the buttocks, as he will fully evaluate where and how this area can be enhanced in relation to the rest of the individual’s body.

FITNESS WITH ALEX CASTRO

The Perfect PT with Alex Castro

Alex Castro is one of London’s top personal trainers. ith over ten years e perience within the fitness industry, le trains his clients in the City alongside working at arrys ootcamp as an instructor at both their Euston and Moorgate branches.

Personal trainers aren’t just reserved for beginners - they can help anyone from a fitness novice to someone preparing for a specific race or wanting to achieve a specific skill (strict muscle ups for me!) or even those seeking to overcome a particular sticking point. It is therefore absolutely fundamental to ascertain what your goals are in order to find a PT that is best placed to help you achieve those goals. Just a note that not all PT’s offer nutritional advice as a service and if this is a priority for you, you must let your potential future PT know, particularly if you want a tailored plan. PT’s can be found anywhere, but unfortunately it does take more than simply adding ‘PT’ or ‘fit’ to the end of your Instagram handle to be a serious fitness professional who can teach and train others! Whether you’re a member of a gym or want to be trained at home or in a studio, the following points are all essential and ones which I would advise my own clients and future clients to take into consideration: - Be sure of their expertise. Good trainers have certifications from reputable organisations (such as Premier education and YMCA). It might sound boring and obvious but double checking they are certified (and insured) is a useful start! - Specialities. If you have a very specific goal, make sure you find someone who can deliver this to you. There are running coaches, calisthenics specialists, PTs for golfers all available in an ever-growing market. - Cost. Prices vary based on qualifications and location. Think about your budget and don’t despair if some PT’s seem expensive some will offer group training or a reduced cost if you buy sessions in bulk. Never forget the upside too - you will have personal attention alongside a programme designed to meet your needs as

well as a good old tug on your wallet to make sure you get out of bed and turn up to train! - Availability. Consistency is key and it is therefore worth enquiring about a PT’s schedule. - Location. Make your life as easy as possible and consider your timetable and habits. Be realistic about how far you’d be willing to travel. - You should have a good personal rapport with your PT. Find someone that suits your personality and motivation style some people like a ‘tough love’ approach whilst others prefer positive reinforcement. Comfort and ease of communication are paramount to get the most out of a relationship with your PT. Look into success stories or client referrals. Whether your goal is to lose body fat or train for an event, you want to see a prospective PT has had success in this area. Speak to people they have trained and get their feedback. Check out their experience. Practice makes (near) perfect and a trainer who has been around for a while is likely to have tried, tested and developed their techniques. That is, of course, not to say that fresh, young trainers do not also have their advantages. One of my personal favourite PTs, Jay Brockway of We Are Equilibrium is only 24 and his enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge are second to none. I asked Jay to reflect on the clients with whom he has found the most success (whether that is because they are long-standing or because they have achieved lots of personal targets) and he said, “Clients that are receptive, open and determined tend to have the most success” Good luck finding your PT and don’t be scared of trial and error.

The New Forest One of the country’s most luxurious retreats nestled in the heart of The New Forest, Lime Wood offers guests the ultimate luxury boutique country house experience in an extraordinarily beautiful setting.

LIME WOOD

LimeWood Under 2 hrs by car and by train from London, 22 miles from Winchester and 12 Miles from Southampton, Lime Wood hotel is the real gem of the New Forest. Set in the heart of the New Forest National Park, Hampshire, and the only 5 star luxury country house in the Park, the stunning main house and out buildings sit in extensive restored gardens and grounds allowing forest and parkland to come together in a truly unique setting. Originally a Regency country house that was first established as a hunting lodge in the 13th Century the luxury country house hotel has been lovingly renovated, using the classical structure to keep the spirit of its past, taking inspiration from its extraordinarily beautiful surroundings and adding little contemporary twists sparingly to ensure its modernly luxurious but not in a flashy way. Ben Pentreath of Working Group Design restored the main house and its extensions, comprising 16 bedrooms, a series of classically designed sitting rooms, library, dining room, informal eatery, bar, cellar and billiard room. Meanwhile Charles Morris,

whose previous work includes the Orchard Room at Highgrove, designed the additional buildings which include a further 11 suites and two guest rooms. With such high standards, the hotel oozes understated opulence and is English countryside at its very best. Ideal for couples, families and even business events, the array of room options from the Main House, to the Coach House and Garden Lodges which offer their very own log fires, and all give stunning views of the surrounding forest. The Generous category is a good bet if you aren’t a family or just there on business. All rooms are very in this category are very individual. In the Main House they range from a king sized bed in the centre of the room that connects to an open bathroom with a centred free standing bath tub to a more conventional laid out bedroom with separate bathroom. In The Coach House there are visible beams, panel walls, oak wooden flooring, a fire and a large balcony looking out onto the forest and there is an open fire place in the Pavilion

After all that relaxing you will be wanting something to eat, and luckily the facilities at Lime Wood are more than enough. The main restaurant, Hartnett Holder & Co is a relaxed, stylish and comfortable area bursting with character and fantastic wafts of flavour, yet remaining unpretentious. Angela Hartnett is one of the most high-profile female chefs in the restaurant world and has worked under Gordon Ramsay at Aubergine, and then under Marcus Wareing where she soon became Head Chef at P trus. In 2004 she gained her first Michelin star and in 2008 she launched Murano in Mayfair. Together with Lime Wood’s Luke Holder, formerly of The Orrery, and the Oxo Tower, and their team, they create locally sourced Italian dishes with a respectful nod to the seasons and to Italian culinary ideologies. Hartnett and Holder’s food comes with the much loved Italian approach to eating - where sharing and provenance is everything. The style is chefs’ home-cooked food not chefs’ food cooked for restaurants. Both Angela and Luke are famed for their informal, grounded style of cooking and their respect for local produce. Much of which is prepared in Lime Wood’s very own smoke house. Just on the right as you approach the main house, the smoke

TRAVEL house is beautifully located and is where the restaurant smokes and preserve their own salmon as well as dry cured ham – Parma ham style, pancetta, chorizo, salami, coppa and much more. Many of the items feature on the main menu which is a flurry of Italian influenced forest dishes and daily specials teeming with Italian flavours and fresh seasonality. Highlights include moreish arancini bites; pizzetta with spinach, taleggio, and quail’s egg; tortellini, nduja (a spicy sausage) and buttered crab; baked bream, tru ed bisque, hazelnut and date salad; dover sole, meuniere; and Glenarm Estate shorthorn, 42-day salt aged rib eye for two. Deep fried courgettes on the side are also a must-have. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without an extensive wine list, and a knowledgeable sommelier is on hand to help you decide and also encourage to try something you may not have before. Afterwards, its back to the spacious bar for one of Lime Wood’s signature cocktails before retiring to your room. Those keen to learn more can even partake in a cookery class! Also on offer is Afternoon Tea and varying set menus where you can even have any three course from the A La Carte dinner menu for the fixed price of £45.00, Monday to Wednesday until 30th June. ANGERS

Angers Loire Valley With cobbled streets, medieval half-timbered houses, a grand cathedral and castle, Angers is a classically French city and now you can explore all that it has to offer thanks to an increase in the number of flights from London City Airport to Angers with British Airways. Offering the greenest city landscape in the whole of France with over 1500 acres of parks and green space, the city lies in the heart of wine making country with the Anjou and Saumur vineyards making some of France’s finest wines. The area boasts 32 AOC appellations and is the 3rd largest wine growing region in France. The Loire Valley has always been popular with British holidaymakers fascinated by its history and culture. The area is known as the ‘Valley of the Kings’ as it was once home to the Plantagenet kings who ruled both France and England. The kings and royalty of France had their holiday homes here too – we know these as the regal châteaux and manor houses that pepper the undulating landscape. Not just a place to relax and regenerate with a glass of wine, cycling fans will be pleased to note that the 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2016 will arrive in Angers on 4th July. It will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the summer programme of fun and festivals. While you’re there you can also enjoy the ‘Loire V lo’ cycle route, which was voted the best new tourism attraction in 2012 by the British Guild of Travel Writers, winds its way along the

banks of the Loire and passes through much of UNESCO World Heritage site. In addition, there are hundreds of miles of other well-marked trails and new routes such as the ‘La V lofrancette’ offering 630kms of continuous cycle path, all safe and easy for cycling no matter what your level of capability. Elsewhere, and making an excellent weekend break there are a variety of festivals, markets and music events taking place in the city throughout the year meaning you are spoilt for choice for activities. For those on business, Angers also has a good record in holding business conferences and has a well-equipped 3000 capacity conference centre and exhibition space.

Getting There...

British Airways flies from London City to Angers three times a week. Since the route was launched four years ago flights have only operated during the peak summer months, but this year British Airways began summer flights to Angers in March and they will continue to the end of October. Return hand baggage fares are available for £50, based on a return journey, and are available to book on www.ba.com/ londoncity. All British Airways fares include complimentary refreshments and drinks on board and no debit card charges. Customers have a quick and easy journey through the Docklands airport, with hand baggage it takes just 15 minutes to get from kerbside to airside.

SLIMMERIA

Slimmeria Nestled in the tranquil Sussex countryside, close to the historic town of Battle, Hastings, Slimmeria is for those super serious about weight loss. We were invited down for a week to see if the claims of hefty weight loss were true. With apprehension and slight nervousness we willingly accepted. The house itself is a large Georgian manor house complete with a pool, that’s open during the summer months and large conservatory. The impressive driveway and pretty fountain make for a lovely entrance even if you are not sure what to expect on the inside. Check in is on a Sunday and guests are invited to arrive between 4pm and 6pm for an individual assessment where you also get weighed and measured. Upon arrival, staff help with bags and you are escorted through the grand hallway to the zen-like white room, which you later find out is also used for relaxation and yoga classes. It’s surprising just how many people you meet that have actually been to the retreat before. Many have come back to continue their journey and others just because it worked before and old habits have crept back in. The group during our stay is mainly women, of a variety of ages and all abilities all keen to detox or lose some weight, although we are told that men often do visit too. One woman is on her fourth stay and cites the fact you can lose up to a stone in a week as her incentive. The dreaded medieval style bell rings (loudly) everyday to signal anything from wake up at 7.15am to meal times and class start times. While this sense of militant routine - the list of stringent rules is also read out frequently - may remind you of your school years and be less than appealing, the formula does work. You quickly find yourself settling into the regime and in all honesty if

you weren’t there for a reason you wouldn’t be there at all so there’s no point grumbling and even if you do it’s certainly not welcomed. The first meal is an almost clear broth with chunks of cauliflower and cherry tomatoes. Surprisingly there is salt on the table, as well as pepper and chilli flakes - something you will use liberally during your stay. I’m convinced the first meal is a shock tactic however, as the week went on food became more colourful and although still only raw vegetables and juices and you find yourself thoroughly appreciative at the sight of a bright green courgette sitting together with a red pepper. The food during the stay is very routine. You have your lemon tonic (hot water and a sliver of apple) at 7.45am before the morning briefing where owner, Galia or another member of her team enthusiastically outlines the day’s events. Then you embark on a five or six mile walk for two hours. Those with injuries or recurring health issues can opt for a slightly easier walk around the house’s vineyards or nearby cricket ground but are warned not to pop into the ‘juice bar’ as Galia fondly calls it - pub to you and I - that’s also close by. Although tiring, the walks do get easier if you are not the fittest and are actually incredibly beautiful. One day you will be trekking through the countryside admiring the rolling hills and cattle and the next, knee deep in mud collecting wild garlic shoots in the forest along the historic 1066 route. Thanks to the close proximity of the sea, a coastal walk is also on the agenda for the week. One thing to be sure of is that you pack sturdy walking boots, there is nothing worse than being caked in mud and guests are warned in a forcefully worded welcome letter that if you don’t have the correct footwear you will be dismissed from the walk. Upon your return to the house, breakfast is served, a juice often in the form of carrot and ginger or grapefruit and orange, before

TRAVEL

you are plunged back into an exercise class which again varies everyday and can be anything from boxersize to circuit training; and then relaxing yoga. All of the classes are very good and the change is useful to keep those less motivated on the right track. For those having a slump, you are offered what’s known as a ‘magic raisin’. Just the one though, and even though it’s no more than just a normal raisin, you’ll be surprised the boost it gives you. The afternoons are slightly more leisurely and are used for spa time and relaxation, those who are keener may go out for a second run or walk on the grounds. Between 3pm and 4pm (and the only meal without the signal of the bell) is afternoon tea. However, you can forget any thoughts of large cream teas and sandwiches, after all you are at a slimming retreat, and are instead served slivers of fruit such as orange and half a strawberry with warm water perhaps even with some mint leaves if you are lucky. The spa can only be described as ‘rustic’ and is located in the basement of the house in one single room separated by hospitallike screens sparsely decorated with candles. Not what you were expecting Perhaps. However you have to remember that this isn’t a spa location, the treatments are merely an added bonus and in all honesty after all that exercise you’ll be pleased just to be having the treatments as you can be sure to have aching limbs. While the surroundings may not be the best, the therapists are very good and thorough. During your stay you must have a deep tissue or relaxation massage, for those more adventurous the twig bashing or cellulite busting honey slapping may be more unique for your stay. For those looking for something a little more tailored to their individual detox journey, you can also venture off site to a one-toone treatment such as personal training, colonic hydrotherapy or

an individual nutritionist appointment. These will also be arranged in the afternoon during the week. After all that hard work, dinner is served by the gong of the bell at 6.30pm every evening. Usually warm, it’s another vegetarian meal followed by a herbal tea, before another fitness class such as Zumba, Belly Dancing or a motivational talk - which is particularly useful for those looking to make a real life change. Bedtime is at 9pm and all the house lights are turned off at this point. Extreme Again, perhaps. But again that’s what you are here for, to relax, lose weight and rejuvenate the mind, body and soul. The first couple of nights are restless but soon you find yourself so physically tired that you naturally want to go to sleep anyway just to recover! If not there is WiFi, although bear in mind it isn’t the strongest being in a remote area, and phones are allowed in private areas so you can always catch up on that if you feel you must. Afternoon napping is not encouraged at all and any sign that you are finding the activity too easy; Galia will up the pace and push you harder. Each room varies considerably and has been furnished by Galia herself. The fusion of the English country house features such as heavy wooden floors, wardrobes and suits of armour with more modern bright colours is appealing. Final weigh in can seem daunting, but with new bonds formed it’s almost like a show with everyone encouraging and being supportive of each person’s inevitable loss which can be anything from 4lbs to an incredible 11lbs. I lost 9 and a half lbs, and certainly did feel lighter although I think you have to be reasonably realistic when you get home and try to implement healthy eating to maintain the loss, after all it’s a detox and a kick start - not a way of life.

In celebration of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester will offer a limited edition floral-inspired Lunch Hour menu, including an exquisite dessert, created by talented Pastry Chef, Angelo Ercolano. Wright Brothers Offering the best variety of British and French oysters in London in an informal but stylish atmosphere, Wright Brothers’ Soho Oyster House is a must for all seafood lovers. Situated in the heart of Soho and just off Carnaby Street, this particular seafood paradise is located in a Victorian Townhouse in the ever popular foodie haven at Kingly Court. You notice the warm and friendly atmosphere of this unique restaurant as soon as you step inside and are greeted by the seemingly ever cheerful staff who all seem to have a happy disposition. Eager to please, they will enthusiastically explain everything on the menu and recommend great choices and General Manager, Kevin Coetzee is always on hand to help. Here you can sit back and enjoy the ambiance of the stripped floors and bare bulbs and relax whilst enjoying a cocktail or two in this superbly positioned three storey restaurant. Experienced Head Chef, Sasha Zivert and his team have created an extensive range of modern, British seafood with an occasional Asian influence. Fish comes from Cornish day boats and oysters and other seafood are supplied from Wright Brothers’ own Duchy of Cornwall Oyster Farm. This is a private fishery situated on the Helford River. In 2002 brother and brother in law Ben and Robin decided on a change of career and started bringing oysters back to popularity in the UK and after a lot of hard work on their part, their farm now supplies a range of high

quality sustainable oyster, fish and seafood to many of the City’s finest restaurants. As you would expect, there are a wide variety of excellent seafood dishes to choose from but as you are in an oyster house, any one of the varieties on offer is a must. Even if you have never experienced oysters before, you should at least have a go, you can taste the freshness and the quality of these sizeable oysters as soon as you pop them in your mouth. Other starters include Alaskan king crab meat or chargrilled prawns with chilli oil. These delicious starters or ‘small plates’ will set you up for the main course which showcases an amazing selection of fresh fish such as the whole, line caught wild sea bass, pancetta, radicchio and orange segments. However, there is also an alternative for the meat lovers which is the Australian wagyu bavette steak served with chips and a fennel salad. One of their delicious sides include fried brown rice with kale and courgettes. These portions are huge but if you still have room for dessert there is a good selection to choose from as well as the cheese plate. There are a variety of good wines available to compliment your chosen dishes. With Wright Brothers ethos being ‘sea to plate’ this restaurant is a must for true lovers of anything that comes from the ocean. Prices vary but check the website for the menu. The company also has two other sites in East London’s buzzy Spitalfields and West London’s South Kensington.

Sake no Hana From now until 18th June, Sake no Hana, the Japanese restaurant by Hakkasan Group, is celebrating the arrival of Spring with the return of the sakura cherry blossom garden in the Sake no Hana bar. By day, the bar is transformed with intertwining cherry blossom branches, falling petals, a grass floor, and blossom entrances, while by night lights twinkle magically within the blossom to create an intimate yozakura atmosphere, yozakura literally meaning ‘night sakura’. To complement the serene surroundings the restaurant has also created a limited edition seven course menu for guests to enjoy while being surrounded by moving cherry blossom images projected onto the bamboo behind the bar completing the all encompassing experience. Perfect for a special occasion, the setting is truly beautiful. Arched over the iconic escalators, a cherry blossom tree forms a tunnel for guests to ascend into the restaurant, while upstairs cherry blossoms hang through the wooden ceiling of the dining room. Traditionally the Japanese hang lanterns in the blossom trees during yozakura and socialise by feasting and drinking beneath the blossom throughout the night. Sake no Hana has replicated this in the form of sparking lights dancing between the blossom branches offering guests the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the flowers in the heart of busy Mayfair. Hanami literally means “flower viewing”, and it is customary to sit beneath the blossom to read and write haiku poetry. To tie in with this expressive tradition, guests who order the Sakura at Sake no Hana menu will be gifted with a haiku written by one of the

famed haiku masters and printed onto a paper petal. Many haiku poets were inspired by the cherry blossom and spring as the sakura season lasts only a few weeks in Japan, thus symbolising the fragility of nature and of life. Throughout the day, the cherry blossom will naturally fall onto the grass floor of the Sake no Hana bar, showcasing the fleeting beauty of the blossom, the season, and of time. The limited edition menu features a Kaori Arpege cocktail with Beefeater gin, yuzu sake, cherry liqueur, peach bitters, grapefruit juice and agave; a bento box created by Executive Head Chef Hideki Hiwatashi; a dessert and macarons. The cocktail is a wonder in itself and comes complete with three atomisers to spray onto the cocktail, including red cherry, black cherry and cinnamon; elderflower and jasmine; and violet, each completely altering the taste of the cocktail with each spray. The Bento Box is served with a white miso soup starter, and includes a selection of sushi and hamachi, akami and salmon sashimi. Choose from Salmon miso yaki with egg mustard sauce, Sumiyaki chicken with spicy shichimi sauce, and Crispy yasai katsu. For dessert the aptly titled Cherry Chocolate Sake Mousse with sake jelly is indulgent without being too rich and the Cherry blossom macarons - vanilla macarons with cherry blossom tea ganache, are a sweet way to end the meal. Sakura at Sake no Hana’s limited edition menu is available for lunch and dinner in the bar and restaurant sushi counter until 18th June, Monday to Saturday, for £34 per person. To book a table call 020 7925 8988 or email reservations@sakenohana.com.

Shoryu Ramen To celebrate the longer days of spring, Shoryu Ramen’s has created a delightful range of limited edition cocktails featuring Japanese sake with fruity finishes of passion fruit and limes. Highlights include The Whisky No Kaze - A full bodied cocktail with a rich blend of Hakushu 12 year whisky, green chartreuse, namazake, orange juice and a kick of mint; and the Murasaki Le Fizz - Josen sake, Parfait Amour, violet liqueur and passion fruit topped with prosecco. The Tonkotsu ramen restaurant is famed for its huge warming bowls of tasty handmade ramen in pork broth topped with delicious char siu barbecue pork belly, nitamago egg, kikurage mushrooms, spring onion, sesame, ginger and nori seaweed. There are lots of variations and you can even choose your own toppings. Our favourite has to be the Kimchi Seafood Tonkotsu with prawns, scallops and squid. Other must tries are the fluffy Shoryu Buns. We love the char siu barbecue pork belly bun and tiger prawn tempura. Locations in Regent Street, Carnaby and Liverpool Street. shoryuramen.com

Oliver Maki Located on 33 Dean Street, Soho, Oliver Maki launched earlier this year and marks a UK first for the family-owned business. Already an established and awardwinning concept in the MiddleEast, the restaurant encompasses traditional Japanese cooking methods with global flavours. The kitchen is headed up by Executive Head Chef Louis Kenji Huang (ex. Sushi Chef of Nobu Las Vegas), with a menu of creative sashimi and maki dishes as well as mains. For a lunch time treat head in and enjoy one of the restaurant’s Bento Boxes. The In the Box option offers a crispy salad, 3 pieces of the chef ’s special maki, 3 pieces of Issai Maki that features a great spicy sauce, and chicken teriyaki and special rice. For something a bit more filling, the Out of the Box option features all of the above apart from the chicken teriyaki as well as a miso soup starter, seafood ceviche, 3 pieces of the chef ’s special nigiri and salmon teriyaki and special rice. With outside seating this is perfect for a quick lunch with friends or colleagues. Served Mondays-Fridays 12pm-3pm. Oliver Maki, 33 Dean Street, London W1D 4PP olivermaki.co.uk

New Look for Brasserie Blanc Just a stone’s throw from Waterloo Station, Brasserie Blanc Southbank has reopened its doors to unveil a brand new look, bringing an inviting all-day restaurant to the banks of the Thames. Welcoming you to the restaurant is a fantastic outdoor terrace, complete with olive tree oasis creating an idyllic spot to enjoy a drink in the summer sunshine. Steps lead down to destination lounge bar, where diners can enjoy an aperitif or kick back with an afternoon coffee, post-work tipple or pre-theatre cocktail. Beyond the bar, the large main dining area opens up to reveal a beautifully light new décor with panelling and contemporary artwork, creating a relaxing yet intimate environment. Inspired by Raymond’s own kitchen, where friends and family gather around the table to celebrate authentic French food, handmade ceramics and natural linens have replaced former white tablecloths to give a more relaxed feel. The rear of the restaurant boasts two private dining spaces that can be booked for special gatherings, the space can be expanded for parties of up to 100. Serving simple, hearty French dishes, Brasserie Blanc’s menu has been inspired by seasonality and prepared from scratch, the la carte menu is filled with the best of British Isles produce treated with delicate French finesse. There is something to suit all taste buds, whether you’re in the mood for hearty French classics such as Escargots in garlic herb butter or Shetland Isles mussels, or something a little different like chilli and ginger squid. The ‘Les Classiques’ range includes favourites such as cheese sou and

boeuf bourguignon which are available all year round. Other seasonal highlights from the new Spring menu include seared Shetland Isles salmon fillet with pickled vegetables, dill cr me fraiche and French fries. Dessert, if you can manage it, is a decadent affair with the likes of summer berry savarin, chocolate and almond torte, pistachio sou with chocolate ice-cream, and baked Alaska for two flamb ed with Cointreau. To accompany the menu, as you would expect is a varied wine list with a variety of options available from some small French vineyards. For a lighter lunch or pre-theatre bite the great value set menu is just £9.95 for a two-courses and £13.45 for three-courses, Monday to Saturday until 6.30pm. An extended lunch menu is also available on Sundays.

HARRODS WINE

The Oenophilist

with Edward Gerard, Wine Buyer for Harrods

Edward erard started his career cycling cases of fine wine round the SW1 and SW3 postcodes. Some 13 years later after a stint in the S , and having e tensively traveled and tasted his way around the wine world he finds himself with the enviable ob of selecting the vast range available in the ine ooms at arrods.

When it comes to wine, the United Kingdom has a long history of consumption dating back to the Romans, what is less well known is the history of vineyards also dates back to those times, although not much is documented. By the time of the Doomsday survey there were 46 vineyards registered and by the time Henry VIII ascended the throne this number had tripled. After this period however there was a massive decline, and vineyards in Britain almost died out until the late 20th century when pioneers decided that making wine in England was possible again. The style from then to now is unrecognisable and I’m pleased to say that there are a number of excellent wineries in the UK and whilst the English Sparkling wine category is still leading the way we are starting to see a few quality

still wines emerging and it’s this development that I find most exciting. In this article I wanted to highlight the delightful Hush Heath Winery near Marden in Kent as this is the winery that has restored my faith in English still wines. For many years now I’ve been a fan of our sparkling production in the UK and at Hush Heath they make one of the best sparkling Rose’s in the form of the Balfour Rose that can easily go toe to toe with its more famous cousins from Champagne. However, I have always been, dubious at best, in the UK’s ability to make quality still wines. That all changed earlier this year when I tried the Hush Heath’s wonderfully delicate 2014 Nannette’s Rose which offers delicious ripe strawberry notes with hints of pink grapefruit and Cox apple all held on a palate that is light but balanced and perfect for the summer months ahead. Hush Heath also produce the beautifully balanced 2014 Skye’s Chardonnay, which is the finest still white wine I have tried from the UK. The fabulous and recently released 2015 Manor Pinot Noir, whilst light on the palate does not leave you wanting for flavour and elegance, it would be a perfect partner for a British picnic, easily matching everything from smoked Salmon to rare roast beef, pork pies and piccalilli! All of the aforementioned wines are available from the Harrods Wine Rooms of the lower ground floor.

Cafe Murano Sunday Lunch Light, airy and in the heart of vibrant Covent Garden, Cafe Murano is the perfect place to enjoy Sunday lunch Italian style. Under the direction of Michelin starred chef Angela Hartnett, the inviting restaurant stretches all the way back with a huge marble dining bar. Upstairs the stunning glass roof and leather banquettes sit around a beautiful floating centre table that hosts a variety of fresh vegetables and bread. The Sunday Pranzo della Domenica menu features a variety of traditional Northern Italian dishes in generous portions. Start with a little Cichetti before opening with some Antipasti in the form of Salt cod, wet polenta, Planeta Olive Oil; or Burratina, tomato, basil and anchovy. You better make sure you don’t eat breakfast, as you won’t want to miss anything and there is plenty to choose from. The pasta dishes are to die for especially the Tagliatelle, sausage and fennel ragu and parsley; and Lobster spaghetti, garlic, parsley and datterini tomatoes. Opt for the smaller portion as a starter before choosing a Secondi dish so you have room to try it all. For the main, the Hake, baby gem, romanesco and pickled red onions is lovely and light while the Chicken Milanese,

rocket and parmesan is simple and tasty, especially when ordered with Courgette fritti. Dessert, if you can manage it, comes in the form of refreshing Tiramisu semifreddo and traditional Zabaglione, cantucci. As you would expect, the wine list features a variety of Italian wines and beers as well as a host of sparkling options and cocktails.

Toms Kitchen The Tom’s Kitchen restaurants across London have recently launched new spring menus, using the finest seasonal produce to create contemporary British dishes. Guests can choose from starters such as Hand Dived Scallops with gem lettuce, sorrel and almond vinaigrette; New Season Asparagus with mache salad, tru e dressing and pheasant egg; and Homemade Ricotta with broad beans, peas and gremolata. Of course that said, those who can’t resist something a little heartier will have trouble resisting the deliciously indulgent menu mainstay mac and cheese, served with tru e oil should you wish. Elsewhere main courses include Cornish River Trout with roasted cauliflower, sea vegetables, caper and raisin dressing; and Pan Fried Duck Breast with caramelised chicory, crushed carrots, watercress puree and orange jus. We highly recommend one of Tom’s signature dishes, the roast tenderloin of Pork served with spring cabbage, grain mustard sauce, and roasted heritage tomatoes. To finish, guests can enjoy desserts such as Yorkshire Rhubarb with custard cream, rhubarb sorbet and marshmallow; and Almond and Apple Tarte Fine with almonds and amaretto ice cream. The restaurant’s also boast a number of daily specials, we enjoyed a wonderfully light mango cheesecake and yogurt ice cream at the large Canary Wharf branch. A wide range of cocktails, wines and beers are also available. The Tom’s Kitchen restaurants are located in Chelsea, Canary Wharf, St Katharine Docks, and Somerset House, with a new Tom’s Kitchen Deli and Bar having recently launched at HMS Belfast.

COCKTAIL COLUMN

Zoran’s Mixology Masterclass

with Zoran Peric

oran Peric is a cocktails and spirits e pert with a background in launching and managing some of ondon s top bars such as the Soho otel. e has also worked with some of the country s leading drinks brands, working with them to develop their brand and drinks concepts.

I love spring. It’s probably my favourite season. The days are longer, the nights are warmer; for me it is the perfect time to indulge in some refreshing and delectable cocktails. After the cold, grey winter, it always feels like a time of promise and possibilities; with the sun out, we seem to be more prepared to experiment and try new things. May as a month brings with it two key opportunities to imbibe the good stuff. So why not give the below a try and properly step into spring. Cinco de Mayo (5th May) is a big deal in Mexico, and Cinco de Mayo in London is growing. The date commemorates the anniversary of Mexico’s defeat of France in 1862 during the FrancoMexican War, and they’ve been celebrating the victory ever since. Unsurprisingly, there’s plenty of tequila and margaritas involved. This one is a personal favourite, the Patrón Reposado Tequila has just the right balance of fresh agave, oak with notes of fruit citrus and honey which makes this margarita exceptionally smooth and easy to drink. Perfect Patrón Margarita: 35ml Patrón Reposado Tequila; 25ml Patrón Citrónge Liqueur; Half fresh lime; Combine all ingredients and shave over ice. Strain and serve. Alternatively you could head to any of the Be At One cocktail bars and have the bartender make you their Chica Caliente cocktail for the whole month of May in celebration of this Mexican holiday. Fruity and sweet with a little kick, the combination of tequila, vanilla liqueur, passion fruit puree and a little Tabasco will spice up your night. World Whisky Day (21st May) is all about the water of life. Now there are of course Irish whiskies, US whiskies, Indian

whisky is now taking a life of its own, but in my mind, the two dominant players are Scotch and Japanese whiskies. For those longer spring nights, The Rusty Nail is the perfect cocktail to sip on and while the evening away. Simple to make, yet complex and rewarding, it sits alongside the Martini and the Old Fashioned as one of the classics of the cocktail world. Its origins in the bars and clubs of 50s New York lends old-school style and sophistication to the drink. Rusty Nail: 1 part Drambuie; 2 parts Scotch whisky; Build over ice in a rocks glass and stir. Garnish with a lemon twist. For World Whisky Day, why not go further afield as it were and try a Japanese whisky? The Hakushu Distillers Reserve from the House of Suntory is fresh with citric notes, perfect for spring. Straight from the untouched forests of the Japanese Alps, it is a crisp and gently smoky single malt with herbal notes that will enliven your senses. But this is an article about cocktails, so to keep it simple and retain the subtle complexities of the whisky, drink like the Japanese do; a simple highball. The Hakushu Forest Highball is my drink. It is Hakushu 12 years old, soda water and fresh mint. When I walk into a bar, I like them to make that drink for me. It is simple, very refreshing and beautiful with lots of ice. Alternatively, head to Sexy Fish where they have the third largest collection of Japanese whisky in the world! Their Miso Thirsty cocktail is a concoction of Hibiki Japanese Harmony whisky, plum, Kamm & Sons, miso, garnished with a lotus crisp - it’s a beautiful blend of sweet and savoury that you can’t quite put your finger on.

Motorsport meets the open road The team at Audi have used the impressive technologies developed through their motorsport division to create the fastest production car the marque has ever delivered. Topping 200mph at full speed, this is a machine that is not to be messed with. And it’s not just the performance that will leave you open mouthed, the visual update is equally enjoyable.

AUDI: R8 V10 PLUS

German Precision Breathtaking Performance The fastest production car to ever leave Audi’s masterful workshop...oh and they’ve made it look pretty good too.

Exhilaration isn’t a term used too often in day-to-day life, and nor should it be. However, every now and then something comes along that truly takes your breath away calling for such terms. The latest from Audi’s top shelf certainly ticks a considerable amount of the necessary boxes. Their R8 has - since its launch in 2006 - offered a consistently approachable and surprisingly reasonable way into the supercar market and there are no signs of them looking to make any changes, just a few improvements. Design tweaks are very apparent from the moment you lay eyes on this beauty. Strong lines and sharp detailing deliver a crisp and precise aesthetic paralleled to the engineering precision under the skin. If you are after an all-out drivers car, you will do very well to find anything better than this. It packs everything you could possibly want from the looks to the performance with the added bonus of fun…lots of fun. Although incredibly safe thanks to the obligatory ‘Quattro’ all-wheel-drive system, you can still very much enjoy this car on the road or track. The 2016 model brings two 5.2-litre V10 options, the standard packing 540 PS with the ‘Plus’ version pushing a staggering 610 PS and 560Nm of torque making a 0-62mph time of just 3.2 seconds and top speed in excess of 200mph. Opt for the plus and you will be in possession of a very serious piece of automotive engineering that will rarely come across anything that can compete on the performance front. Speed and power isn’t everything unless you are in the drag racing business and Audi are clearly very aware of this. Even the V10 Plus isn’t the fastest of supercars out there with plenty offering zero to sixty times sub 3 seconds. However, what this car potentially lacks in acceleration, it more than makes up for when you have to turn a corner (something that is inevitable on both UK roads and any track worth your time). Frighteningly sharp response will see the R8 turning the corner before you’ve even asked it too and at a considerably faster speed than even the most seasoned weekend driver would imagine possible. And thanks to the iconic quattro system, you can get all of the potential power onto the tarmac nice and early coming out of the corner for an even quicker exit. The car features Audi’s drive select system which allows you to adapt the suspension settings along with sport function to alter the gear ratios making for either a more race focused or ‘everyday’ car. Slide across to Dynamic and you can feel the whole car stiffen up, the accelerator receives a swifter response and the ride turns into the thing of nightmares for any surface short of an ice

AUDI: R8 V10 PLUS rink. Although this does mean that the adaptive system is working as it should and is now providing you with the ultimate ride setting for driving at quite insane speeds around any corner you come across, you won’t necessarily welcome the gluteal assault you’ll receive in the process. There is of course a time and a place for such settings to be used, but in daily life, you will find little need to shift away from ‘comfort’. It is important to note however, that ‘everyday’ certainly doesn’t mean you will want to be commuting in it, or taking it to the shops for that matter. The luggage space is somewhat limited by the fact that the enourmous 5.2-litre block is expertly positioned behind the cabin under an equally conveniently positioned pane of glass to ensure everyone can see what your car’s packing. This leaves the front of the car for your shopping and it doesn’t possess a nose anywhere near the size of a Jaguar E-Type, in fact, it is one of the smallest noses around, so if you are heading away for the weekend, pack light or send your luggage via courier to the final destination. And if you plan on doing a spot of shopping, take another car, it’s as simple as that. You might find some space for a pair of shoes and a folded suit, but don’t expect to fit your umbrella in too. Needless to say, if you are a golfer, as good as it might look turning up in one of these, you will very quickly lose any credit when you try maneuvering your clubs out of the passenger door damaging the leather interior as you go. It is much safer to save it for the social events when the clubs are not required. It’s not all bad though, you don’t want to be altering the balance of the car too much anyway, so they are doing you a favour really...

YOUR DRIVE Inside, although limited on space, the German marque have continued their development on the design front with a stunning driver interface. The dashboard is remarkably easy to use with the driver receiving every piece of information they could possibly dream of on the digital display with options to alter what is shown. You can opt for a standard ‘analogue’ setup with speedometer and rev counter or the satellite navigation which utilises the entire screen offering one of the biggest systems on the market. Not only does this look incredibly cool, but is obviously rather practical thanks to its size and positioning. You of course continue to have the key data shown around the screen, but it never becomes cluttered or too busy to work out. Thanks to this impressive system, the rest of the interface can remain clean and uncluttered too, with three uber-stylish knobs projecting out from the very slender and almost non-existent centre console allowing you to play with the climate control and heated seat and screen functions. You will also find the key to the whole system resting neatly behind

the gear lever, the pliable circular knob controls everything from the cars settings to the radio and sat nav functionality and is easy to use whether stationary or on the move. All-in-all, they have done just as good a job on the design front on the inside as they have on the exterior and my goodness have they done a good job on the exterior. Often you come across a car that has a fantastic front end and then move around to the back and find that all design ideas and energy were clearly expended on the front or vice versa, but not here, and not Audi circa 2016. Every car they seem to produce at present has been meticulously designed as an all-round package and this is no different. Every corner of the R8 V10 Plus offers the observer something to appreciate. From its aggressive, sporty stance through to the finer details such as the sleek, cutting light clusters on both the front and rear and contrast air intakes synonymous with the R8 brand. With this car you can also enjoy the contrast rear spoiler which oozes intent and adds even more to its athletic aggression.

AUDI: R8 V10 PLUS

There are two reasons to buy this car, neither of which are for its space or usability. Firstly; because it is possibly the best looking cars since Jaguar’s F-Type was announced and secondly; the driving experience you will have every single time you get in this engineering marvel. Both will be reason enough in their own right, but as a whole package, you can’t possibly deny the appeal. Of course you have the option for the standard V10 model, but this is a car used to make a statement, a statement that says, ‘I like driving

and I appreciate automotive design at its best’, so if you are in a position to add the extra £15,000 for the Plus, it will certainly reward you in the long-run. Equally, if you’re not sure about the justification, simply arrange a test-drive of the two and make your decision off the back of which smile is bigger...although don’t be surprised as to the result. A price tag of £134,520 is considerably more than when the R8 was originally launched, but that is where the comparison ends. There is little, if anything remaining in the make up of this car that is even close to where it started out, all except the driving DNA that is so deeply ingrained in all of Audi’s quattro cars. This is of course todays king of quattro taking every ounce of the systems development and implementing it the most effective and precise way to deliver their highest performing production vehicle to date. Motorsport has a lot to answer for, but the margin between the two worlds is getting ever smaller with an inevitably finite point at which they shall meet. How far away can that be with a car like this driving around UK roads? audi.co.uk

Superb Aussie Saloon 1936 2.5-Litre Jaguar SS Saloon, Chassis number 11963 Launched at the Mayfair Hotel on 23 September 1935, this was the first model to carry the Jaguar name. This was the first four-door car offered by the SS Company. Together with the new body and the new name came a new overhead valve engine, developed with the help of consultant engineer Harry Weslake. The six-cylinder engine gave 102bhp, a great improvement on the 70bhp which had been available from the SSI side-valve engine of previous models. This exceptionally original RHD 2.5-litre saloon is finished in white coachwork with dark green leather interior. It was delivered new to Australia where it lived a sheltered life. The car was then fully restored in 1998 by a marque specialist Doug Nantes and as a result presents itself very well indeed. This is a very rare and elegant sports saloon which features the more desirable 2.5 litre engine. You won’t find many of these on the market, so take the opportunity to at least have a look at the stunning coachwork, you may just be tempted to enjoy it all the way back to your garage.

Lifting Your Garden to New Heights with Kate Gould

Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer with more than a decade’s hands-on experience transforming gardens of all sizes and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where she has been awarded three Gold medals. The most successful of gardens are those that contain structures. These add a vertical dimension without which (and even with exceptional planting) gardens can appear flat and lacklustre. The white garden at Sissinghurst - nationaltrust.org.uk/sissinghurstcastle-garden - is a fantastic example of this. Created in the 1930’s the design literally re-wrote the gardening rule book and its layout has certainly stood the test of time, inspiring generations of gardeners. High hedges surround the garden focusing the eye inward until

you glimpse ‘doors’ cut into the foliage which lead to other ‘rooms’, adding intrigue and interest, but it is the rose arbour in the centre that is the star of the show. Festooned with Rosa mulliganii, in mid summer it groans under the weight of this rampant climber and as if this wasn’t enough, an urn underneath adds another level of height as does the clipped Buxus hedging below that. The effect is multi-layered and keeps the eye moving making the space feel dynamic and completely timeless.

Rosa mulliganii only flowers once in the summer and can reach heights of over 30’ so it is clearly not for every garden but the same exuberant effect could be achieved on a much smaller metal or wooden pergola with Clematis ‘Henryi’, Lathyrus latifolius and Rosa ‘The Generous Gardener’. Planters with annuals or topiary could be added underneath or alternatively furniture would work just as well to create a focal point. Sometimes visually we take things for granted and cannot see the wood for the trees, consequently perhaps the most overlooked vertical structure in the garden are boundary fences. Like the hedges at Sissinghurst, fences frame your plot and can be considered in two distinct ways; 1. as a contemporary structure in their own right kept bare and minimal and much more interestingly, horticulturally speaking, 2. strung with tensioned galvanised wire to provide a frame for climbing plants. Both options have their merits and can transform a garden. If you unify your boundaries, be that hedges, fences or walls

you stand a greater chance that whatever you set inside those parameters will be stronger for it, especially in a small garden. Evergreen wall trained shrubs and climbers are a good place to start with fences as they hide a multitude of sins all the year round so consider as a backbone the following, depending of course upon aspect and remember in most cases you will have to provide supports for them in terms of tensioned wires so you can tie in the exuberant growth: Shrubs: Ceanothus ‘Autumnal Blue’; Cotoneaster cornubia; Garrya elliptica ‘James Roof ’; Euonymus fortunei vars. Climbers: Clematis armandii; Trachelospermum jasminoides; Akebia quinata; Holboelia latifolia; Hydrangea seemannii; Lonicera henryi. All of these plants can be added to for extra colour in the summer - Roses, Clematis, Honeysuckle will all add an extra layer so that your fences, vertical structures and perhaps that ugly wall you’ve been trying to hide for ages all disappear and the overall effect is one of colour and lush growth rather than barren hard surfaces.

JLL RESIDENTIAL

Investing in the Future of London’s Property Market

with James Plumley Residential Development Sales Manager, JLL In our latest Central London residential development market update, we predict that, as a result of significant changes made recently by Government, new development supply in Central London will continue to slow. The number of units under construction in Central London increased by 28% in 2015, with10% growth recorded in H2 2015, but it appears that this activity is starting to level out. Furthermore, our research suggests that developers are beginning to slow their rate of delivery as the number of new unit starts in H2 2015 was lower than in H1. It is also important to note that the number of units seeking planning permission declined by 27% during H2 2015, compared with H1, suggesting that the future development rates are slowing. This is a clear reaction to the higher tax regime, slower sales market, and general political uncertainty. A steadying in the sales market was evident before the announcement in November’s Autumn Statement that investors and second home buyers will have to pay an additional 3% stamp duty on purchases from April 2016, but this has, unsurprisingly, further decreased residential demand in London.

House prices across Central London as a whole saw a 0.2% increase in Q1 2016 however, when looking at specific markets within Central London, Core markets demonstrated a 0.3 decrease, with Outer Core markets showing a 0.7 increase. The East and Outer Core continues to perform particularly well with house price growth reaching 7.0% in the year to Q1 2016, while the more expensive central submarkets, such as Central West and the West End, experiencing average price falls of 5.3 and 2.9% respectively. How successful a new scheme is, is largely down to location and price, and developers are still adjusting to the current conditions of the market. Developments located in Outer Core submarkets continue to sell, usually between £400-£800 per sq ft, as do units at lower price points within less expensive Core markets. This is particularly true where developers are open to negotiation. Location also has an effect on overall market conditions; lower priced Outer Core markets where buyers tend to be domestic owner-occupiers will continue to perform well, but those markets which are dependent on investor demand may face more challenges as developers and buyers are vying for their place in the market. Finally, uncertainty is set to continue with speculation over the result of the EU Referendum in June which will, no doubt, impact how the second half of this year will perform. An ‘out’ verdict will result in a period of conjecture and debate will ensue which, although will lead to a medium-term period of uncertainty and potentially reduced activity and pricing in the shortterm, may not mean a weaker outlook for Central London residential development market in the longterm. However, if the vote is to stay in, location, pricing, and stamp duty effects will continue to be key determinants, but a sound, safe, and highly sought after London residential market will re-emerge and we expect normal activity to resume almost immediately. If you would like to discuss your investment requirements, we would love to hear from you.
