Museum of London Docklands opens new exhibition: Roman Dead 25 May - 28 October
Opening at the Museum of London Docklands on 25th May 2018, Roman Dead will draw on over 40 years of archaeological work and research. Sparked by the discovery of a rare Roman sarcophagus in Southwark in the summer of 2017, Roman Dead is the first exhibition of its kind to look in-depth at the way in which Roman Londoners dealt with death. This will be the first public display of the ‘Southwark sarcophagus’ and raises new questions of death and burial, with the sarcophagus acting as a centrepiece to over 200 other objects on display from Roman burial sites across London. Objects on display include amphorae, jewellery and beautiful glassware alongside cremation urns of varying sizes and shapes. Charred remains of food and vessels that may have contained drinks help to shed light on how Romans prepared their friends and family for their journey to the afterlife. museumoflondon.org.uk/romandead

Fashioned from Nature 21 April - 27 January 2019
A pineapple fibre clutch-bag, Emma Watson’s Calvin Klein dress made from recycled plastic bottles and a cape of cockerel feathers are amongst the 300 beautiful, intriguing and unsettling objects from the V&A’s current major fashion exhibition. Fashioned from Nature traces the complex relationship between fashion and the natural world since 1600. Showcasing how fashionable dress recurrently draws on the beauty and power of nature for inspiration, there are exquisite garments and accessories from Christian Dior, Dries van Noten and Philip Treacy all on display. The exhibition also shows how fashion’s processes and constant
demand for raw materials damage the environment, featuring campaigners and protest groups that have effectively highlighted this issue such as Fashion Revolution and Vivienne Westwood. The aim is to look at the role of design in creating a better, more sustainable fashion industry. Menswear and womenswear from Stella McCartney, known for a commitment to and success in developing new alternative sustainable materials, are displayed alongside an upcycled dress by Christopher Raeburn. The exhibition will run until January next year.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018 22-26 May
The world’s most famous flower show returns to the capital this month from 22 to 26 May just in time for spring. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018, sponsored by M&G Investments will welcome returning favourites and debut designers with gardens from Sarah Price, Jo Thompson, Chris Beardshaw and new talent including Tom Massey and Jonathan Snow. The ten show gardens that will fill Main Avenue will showcase tradition and romance against contemporary and urban design. By 2030 the World Health Organization is predicting that 60.3% of the population will live in cities. With this in mind returning designer Hay Hwang has created a futuristic ‘Eco-City’ Garden with LG Electronics. The garden is intended for a modern city tower block where each unit has a garden, reimagining the concept of vertical forests and applying it to residential apartments. Other Show Garden highlights include award winning designer Jo Thompson’s The Wedgwood Garden; last year’s People’s Choice winner Chris Beardshaw with Morgan Stanley creating a garden celebrating the company’s partnership with the NSPCC; and first time designer Jonathan Snow is creating a garden inspired by a South African Wine Estate sponsored by Trailfinders. The new Space to Grow gardens will offer take home ideas and trends to inspire visitors to transform their outdoor spaces and feel
the benefits that growing can bring. Kate Gould will be going for her fifth gold medal with ‘The West End Secret Garden’, a modern interpretation of the gardens and architecture of London’s West End, highlighting the use of environmentally positive technology to create a contemporary pocket of green space. Other show highlights include The Great Pavilion, a plant lover’s paradise at the heart of RHS Chelsea that will be home to over 90 exhibits from the world’s best nurseries, growers and florists. D’Arcy & Everest celebrate 25 years of exhibiting at the Show, while Hampshire Carnivorous Plants aim for their 20th Gold in 20 years, and Peter Beales Roses will mark their 50th anniversary with the launch of a new rose. One of the most successful exhibitors at RHS Chelsea, Hillier Nurseries will for the third year be working with multi-award winning designer Sarah Eberle with a walk through garden made up of smaller areas with take home inspiration. Also for the first time on Friday 25 May Ranelagh Gardens will remain open to the public until late for an evening of live music, entertainment and more. This year’s show promises to be bigger and better than ever. Tickets are available to buy now at rhs.org.uk/flowershows rhs.org.uk

HAMILTON KHAKI X-WIND Timekeepers of the spectacular Red Bull Air Race, Hamilton have a rich history with aviation and are celebrating their 100 year anniversary of timing the skies with a limited edition watch that represents the very best of the brand. Based on the original Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono, the 2018 Limited Edition is packed with aviation features for pilots and offers a technical perspective including the ground-breaking crosswind calculator of the original. Limited to just 1,918 individually numbered pieces, the Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition features a robust 45mm stainless steel case. Inside, the H-21-Si, the first Hamilton chronograph movement with a silicon hairspring. This material makes the movement more precise as silicon is non-magnetic and less sensitive to shocks - essential when undertaking aerobatic manouvres. The former is an important feature for pilots who often find themselves in environments with high magnetic fields, such as airports. In addition, the movement has been precision certified by COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) as a chronometer. Thanks to newly shaped hands with sand colouring, the watch has enhanced readability. The multilevel black dial allows the eye to navigate between the three counters, the day date window at 9 o’clock and the turning inner bezels. The X-shape visible between the pushers and crowns surrounding the case complete this multi-dimensional theme. The ‘H’ buckle and sturdy leather strap are in typical Hamilton aviation style and there is also a metal bracelet for those who prefer a full steel look. With the crosswind calculator on the turning bezel, the Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition represents the very best of aviation timekeeping from Hamilton.
The X-Wind Auto Chrono is available now. £2,250.00 hamiltonwatch.com

Pilot Ty pe 20 E x t ra S p ec i a l Inspired by the brands legendary aviation watches of yesteryear, Zenith adds a new dimension to its iconic Pilot Collection with a 40mm case in glowing bronze. Featuring the broad fluted crown, oversized luminescent numerals, and in-house automatic ‘engine’ of its predecessors, the latest in the line-up is magnificently offset by a choice of matt blue or black dials with matching blue or eminently military khaki green oily nubuck straps with contrasting stitching. Vintage style, once again combining its imposing yet manageable 40mm presence and ideal proportions with a choice of stylish hues. Embodying all the attributes inherited from aviation’s pioneering days, and with its format suited to every wrist, this latest iteration of the Pilot Type 20 Extra Special 40mm rounds out an already emblematic range from Zenith, thus far composed of large-size watches. Hailing from an all-conquering lineage, this distinctive model featuring more ‘democratic’ 21st century dimensions continues to house the same original attributes: an in-house movement, a broad fluted crown and large luminescent Arabic numerals swept over by finely crafted hands. While never losing sight of the spirit of adventure that forged its legend, this distinctive and classy watch lends itself to the most stylish vintage variations. Both feature protective rubber lining for optimum comfort and a titanium pin buckle. At the heart of the Pilot Type 20 Extra Special 40mm beats the automatic Zenith Elite 679 calibre. This reliable and accurate in-house movement drives central hours, minutes and seconds hands, while delivering a 50-hour power reserve. In a nod to the history of the Maison, the solid bronze case-back depicts the plane flown by Louis Blériot when he crossed the Channel in 1909 with a Zenith on his wrist, along with the Zenith flight instruments logo, complemented by a motif inspired by the fuselage of the legendary French pilot’s aircraft. zenith-watches.com

NEW CAVENDISH JEWELLERS
Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah
Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite Jewellery. Official agents for many of the world’s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on Diamonds & precious stones. Established in 1982, New Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.
Flight has always been on the mind of humans as soon as we were capable of the thought and then even more so once the technological inventions put the theory into practice. The simple idea of soaring above the Earth, unencumbered and with a perspective achieved by a lucky few, was a privilege to the wealthy and an aspiration to the upwardly mobile. As flight has become more accessible, unlike other technologies, the idea still remains intangibly exciting and daring. We do not question how data can be streamed from a device using radio waves but we still marvel at the idea of a plane being propelled into the sky and remaining there. As a century has passed, the methods of flight have evolved from commuter jets to airborne weaponry; mans love affair with air travel has not diminished. The 21st Century has seen the next step in the evolution with the potential exploration of space. Alongside the actual planes, traversing the world be it by land, sea or air has in turn brought about other innovations. After the advent of longitude and latitude, mechanical devices helped with the navigation of ships and planes. These functional devices, most notably the pilot’s watches of the World Wars, in their various guises have remained as important today as they are were when in practical use. Pilot’s Watches were on the whole functional tools, even those developed by Breguet renowned for their attention to aesthetics, erred on the side of functionality. The modern Type XX and XXI models from Breguet alongside the most classic pilot’s watch
from IWC bear the clear hallmarks of their ancestors, with an uncluttered legibility at the fore. The Breitling Navitimer with its mathematically driven slide rule bezel is another great example of the functionality behind the ideal of a Pilot’s Watch. There are plenty more watches that are important to the canon of military and specifically aeronautical horology but the foundation of this direction is often sorely overlooked. In 1904, Louis Cartier was famously requested to make a “wrist” watch for his friend, a Brazilian aviator, Alberto SantosDumont. Though not the first, that accolade belongs to Breguet’s Reine de Naples, a wrist watch was uncommon against the dominance of pocket watches at that time. The challenge was accepted and though the commission was for a watch that could be viewed whilst Santos-Dumont was flying the plane, Cartier’s reputation as a fine jeweller and watchmaker required an element of elegance and style that married the brand’s DNA to the more utilitarian necessity of the request. The first Santos model was delivered on a strap without the iconic screw motif bezel but the basic design of the case was there with the squared visual and wrist hugging curved lugs, even the train track minute counter on the dial was already in place. To say the collection caught the imagination would be a huge understatement. As the model evolved to incorporate a bracelet and the screws that mimic the panels of a vintage plane beaten and riveted together, the collection has not

once disappeared from view. Many new models carry inspiration from older models and fittingly pay homage to a brand’s historic pasts but very, very few can lay claim to an unbroken lineage going back over a century. For 2018, the Santos de Cartier collection has been refined and updated once again. Essentially taking the collections basic cues from the now discontinued Santos Galbee that led the Santos line before this reinvention. Returning to the idea of the Santos being an atypical Pilot’s Watch, the watches that fit this mould were above all, famously resistant to the magnetic fields found in cockpits. The 2018 Santos de Cartier is not only powered by a new in-house automatic movement but said movement is entirely antimagnetic for the first time. This is a lovely nod to the watch’s true heritage but also sensibly keeping in line with modern life where we are surrounded by magnetic fields from phones to even oyster card readers! Moving away from the movement, Cartier has always had a keen focus on style. This is the first occasion in a long time, perhaps not since the Roadster or the Pasha, that Cartier have offered a sports style watch that already enjoys iconic status. The case and bracelet with polished and brushed finishes alongside the screws motif are as instantly recognisable as the Royal Oak, Nautilus and Overseas models. These watches offered considerable horological prowess but are considered fundamentally stylish watches. Cartier invented the stylish wrist watch! The new Santos de Cartier is perfectly in line with this rhythm.
The shape of the case and bracelet have not been changed too drastically while brushed bases with polished bezels and centre links offer a nice contrast. The off-white Roman numeral dial carries the train track offering a very legible palette. Where the new models really differ from their classical counterparts is Cartier’s bold direction into modernity. Both sizes carry a (patent pending) quick change system for adjusting the links and instantly switching between straps and bracelets. The bracelet is a very distinctive element of the design and the new version incorporates a system where at a touch of a subtle button, the pin pops out and the user can adjust the links instantly. This can allow the same watch to be worn by a couple with ease. Each bracelet model comes with a strap and folding clasp as standard - the bracelet is released by a depressed lever where it joins the case, and the strap is fitted with this same locking mechanism. Cartier have chosen to use a particularly on-trend vintage style calf strap that fits the heritage of the design perfectly. For those wanting something a little bit special, a hand wound skeleton version is made in the larger size in both pink gold and steel! This creation will be made in very limited numbers so will undoubtedly garner demand amongst collectors as the first skeletonised Cartier delivered in a regular series, especially in steel. A mixture of the large and medium models are now in-store to view. Prices begin at £5,300.00. New Cavendish Jewellers have been an official retail partner with Cartier for over thirty five years. We welcome you in-store to explore the newest Cartier creations.

Caran d’Ache
Ti m e a n d Fa s h i o n
La Maison Caran d’Ache, in collaboration with the Girard Studio and Vitra, has introduced the 849 Alexander Girard - a ballpoint pen in a limited edition collection that combines the know-how of the Geneva-based writing and drawing instruments company with the playful and emblematic patterns of Alexander Girard. Developed as the newest addition to the Vitra Accessories Collection, which already includes several pieces inspired by the designer, the 849 Alexander Girard also features in the Maison Caran d’Ache office line. Alexander Girard was one of the leading figures in American design during the postwar era. While textile design was the primary focus of Girard's oeuvre, he was also admired for his work in the graphic arts as well as furniture, exhibition and interior design. Girard brought a sensuous playfulness to twentieth-century design that had been absent from the austere aesthetic of classic modernism. A trusty everyday companion whose decor is inspired by the designer’s iconic patterns and motifs, this limited-edition collection includes two models: The first sporting the geometric pattern “Double Triangle” in white gloss on a matt black body and the second, more feminine version features the “Check Stripes” in pink on a white gloss body. The metal case supplied with the 849 pens is adorned with the designer’s iconic motif “The Eyes” in either pink or blue. The 849 Alexander Girard Collection is available now at selected Caran d’Ache and Vitra stores and associated dealers. carandache.com
The 1010 collection from the Maison Caran d’Ache celebrates the encounter between Haute Ecriture and luxury watchmaking. Two art forms inextricably linked with Swiss heritage, embodying ingenuity and technical virtuosity. The 1010 Timekeeper limited edition marks the second chapter in this collection, ten years after the 1010 Chrono limited edition. A homage to watch dials that faithfully accompany the march of time through the ages. The Maison Caran d’Ache has reinterpreted the constituent elements of a watch dial on this limited edition with discreet design and a timeless luxury. Steel hands - tinted blue by thermal treatment appear to turn on their axis. The end of one of these hands is red - a subtle reminder of the emblematic colour of Caran d’Ache. Roman numerals indicate the passage of the hours and a window inspired by the moon phase opening on exceptional timepieces reveals the ink of the piston pump. The clip on these writing instruments, available as fountain pens and roller pens, recalls the design of the Dauphine hands. A black lacquered box, similar to that of a watch case, protects the 1010 Timekeeper limited edition against the ravages of time. Inside, the timeless writing instrument is presented with two silverand rhodium-plated caps engraved with a generic numbering “1 in 500 pieces” to be changed according to the user’s desire. They are reminiscent of a watch strap, one with a chain-link effect drum pattern, the other echoing the codes of watch crowns. Within the box, an inkwell has been specially designed for this limited edition. Available as a fountain pen and roller pen, the writing instruments in the 1010 Timekeeper Limited Edition are entirely designed and produced in the Maison Caran d’Ache’s Geneva workshops. The collection is available from mid-May from all Caran d’Ache boutiques and online.

N O M O S Pe t i t Fo u r s Nomos Glash端tte is celebrating spring with four new versions of the classic model Tetra, but be careful, these watches are not edible despite sharing their name with the classic French pastry and make a delicious impression. The Nomos Petit Four series consists of four new Tetra versions that promise the most delightful wrists: Tetra Matcha, Azure, Pearl, and Grenadine. Ticking within these new watches is the Nomos caliber Alpha, renowned for its reliability and accuracy and as always at Nomos Glash端tte, traditionally crafted by hand in Glash端tte. Every individual movement is
adjusted in six positions and features Glash端tte ribbing, tempered blue screws, and NOMOS perlage. In two of the four watches, the hand-wound caliber can be viewed at work through a sapphire crystal glass back. The two others, Tetra Matcha and Tetra Azure, offer space for a personalized engraving on their stainless steel backs a love note, perhaps, or the address of your favorite French bakery! Continuing a tradition of experimenting with colour in the classic model Tetra every now and then, the square shape of the case and its clear lines are the perfect setting. And their Blu Mediterraneo collection is no exception. Transporting you to the sun, sea and wonder of the Mediterranean coast, the Blu Mediterraneo collection is a real treasure trove for the senses. A place where nature expresses herself in tastes and aromas, blending fresh fruits and crisp ocean air to enhance a sense of wellness and joy. Timeless and sublime, the fine ingredients used in the collection complement Acqua di Parma’s rich heritage and promise to keep sharing the delights of Italy with the world. Yet Blu Mediterraneo represents much more than Mediterranean aromas: it unlocks a fresh state of mind to connect you to everything around you - completely switching off from the noises and smells of the busy, polluted city to give a sense of calm and serenity. Everyone is happier in the sunshine and with little gracing the UK, and time-poor individuals longing for a lasting holiday, Blue Mediterraneo provides that instant hit of warmth and sun-soaked climes. The fragrances of Blu Mediterraneo each share the unmistakable spirit of the Mediterranean. Igniting your senses to share in nature and with the people who bring colour to your life - which create the special allure of this magical Italian region - the fragrances provide that moment of escapism that many lust for. It’s the use of extremely rare chinotto fruit that makes the new Blu Mediterraneo fragrance: Chinotto di Liguria. The enticing bittersweet notes whisk you lightly away to sunlight trickling off waves and a breeze suggestive of wonder and nature.
enticing bittersweet notes whisk you lightly away to sunlight trickling off waves Chinotto is equally a symbol of Liguria’s crafting traditions, it grows splendidly on rocks that tumble steeply down into the sea. The top notes of the fragrance effortlessly blend a charge of pure energy, enhanced by the bittersweet notes of the chinotto fruit, with the sparkling crispness of sumptuous mandarin. At its heart, jasmine and geranium bloom with the dynamic and refreshing notes of cardamom and rosemary mingle before it is rounded off with the peace and tranquility afforded by the base notes of musk and patchouli. Creating envisions of an early morning stroll along the rocky coastlines of western Liguria, Chinotto di Liguria is housed in a shiny ocean blue glass bottle, mirroring the shimmering glints of the sea and iconic Art Deco style of the brand’s Colonia bottles. Representing the colour of the chinotto fruit after it has been candied, Chinotto di Liguria is written on the label with a terracotta tone, while the signature, handmade hatbox in blue embossed paper is the perfect packaging for gifting this charming essence of Liguria. This Eau de Toilette is available in three different sizes: 150ml, 75ml and the handy 30ml, perfect for travelling. You can further enhance your routine by indulging in a Mediterranean beauty ritual of your own thanks to the new Shower Gel, Body Lotion, Hand Cream and Lip Balm in the collection. The new formulas and innovative textures caress the mind and body with the refreshing aroma of Chinotto di Liguria and make up an integral part of any Mediterranean beauty ritual. Envelop your mind, body and soul and revel in the freshness of Liguria all day long wherever you are. acquadiparma.com

smilepod With a number of locations all over the capital, Smilepod offers an array of treatments to suit busy Londoners lifestyles. Offering Saturday and evening appointments, you don’t have to miss work to see the dentist. All 6 of the central London dentists are easily located within five minutes of a tube station so you’ll never have to rush. Customer service is paramount to the brand, so each location offers the best possible standards of dentistry and dental care as well as a friendly and welcoming approach. While you can choose to visit for examinations, fillings and crowns, Smilepod also welcomes clients who choose to come in for teeth cleaning and whitening. One treatment in particular is the High Gloss Diamond Polish treatment. Just like having your teeth cleaned, the dentists and hygienists use a diamond polishing paste to polish teeth to a high gloss, helping restore your natural sparkle and whiteness. Perfect for those concerned about staining from tea, red wine and certain foods, the HGDP treatment delivers incredible results thanks to the use of an ultra-sonic scaler to remove tartar with a special gentle tip. Painless and quick, the tip vibrates to effectively clear out bacteria from below the gum line, before dentists and hygienists gently hand scale removing small pieces of build-up missed during the ultrasonic treatments. An air flow is then used for efficient and faster stubborn stain removal before finally, the diamond polishing paste is used to really create that sparkling, whiter smile.
Teeth genuinely look whiter after and it is a great method for those looking to really clean their teeth, going the extra mile to achieve a more radiant, confident smile. Alternate treatments available include the Philips Zoom! AtHome teeth whitening treatment, which can gently whiten your teeth by eight shades; and the Philips Zoom! Whitening, where dentists will whiten your teeth in just 90 minutes before maintaining at home with the long-term At-Home system. HGDP costs £89.00, walk-in hygienist treatments start from £49.00.

COCKTAIL COLUMN
Calabrese’s Cocktails with Gerry Calabrese
East End drinks maverick Gerry Calabrese has built a reputation as one of the greats in London’s bar scene. From bartending in top London venues such as Lab, Dust, and Sex in the City he went on in 2008 to launch his own multi award winning East End bar, The Hoxton Pony followed by most recently in 2016 Wringer and Mangle situated in the neighbouring London Fields, to much critical acclaim. His pedigree has also seen him act as a drinks columnist as well as consultant and event planner for numerous high profile private clients including Giles Deacon, Swarovski, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Channel 4, and Mulberry.
When a trend or fad comes and hits the world of bars and restaurants, they all seem to come and go with very little consequence, often disappearing seemingly just as fast as they arrived, becoming old news and passé, unlikely to ever be mentioned again. However, there has been a new trend creeping slowly in for a while now, which seems to have made a positive impact on the service industry and - more importantly - the planet, the removal of plastic straws. One estimate suggests that the UK alone discards some 8.5 billion plastic straws a year, which each take up to 500 years to decompose, often ending up in the sea and severely damaging wildlife and the environment. One small but incredibly effective measure to help lessen this amount of straws we waste is for bars, clubs, restaurants and café’s to purposefully remove plastic straws from their venues and to only offer straws to those who need them. Some venues have gone a step further and also removed disposable napkins, opting instead for reusable coasters, and encouraging their guests to bring-their-own reusable coffee cups in place of disposable paper cups. Actively choosing to decrease the amount of waste a venue creates will be a huge benefit for the environment and this, in turn has helped generate a whole new kind of drinking and dining experience, the zero waste cocktail. Not all too long ago, it was commonplace to see piles and piles of discarded citrus from juicing thrown in the bin in every bar you visited, but these days, bartenders and chefs are working alongside
each other to reduce the waste created by the bar and kitchen and swapping leftovers with one another to use in their menus, or simply repurposing their otherwise discarded by-products themselves and using them for anything from garnishes to cordials. While it may be a little hard to suggest to you a zero-waste cocktail recipe for you to create and enjoy at home because it’s hard to predict what you’re eating and drinking at home, I can suggest a few tips to help save ingredients and create less waste. Sherbet - Whenever you are squeezing orange juice for the morning or citrus for your cocktails, always peel the skin off first which can be saved and used to create sherbet. Just de-pith the skins and macerate in caster sugar, then add some citrus juice to dissolve the sugar and balance out the sweetness and you should be left with a beautiful tangy liquid. Strain out the peels and preserve in a jar or bottle in the fridge. This can be used to add a sweet, zest citrus element to your summer cocktails. Ice - When creating drinks at home, you could prebatch a small amount and leave them to chill in the fridge instead of using ice. If you don’t have an ice maker at home, get yourself a nice silicon mould to freeze your own instead of buying store-bought ice in plastic bags. Re-usable Cups - If you’re an avid coffee drinker and often purchase a coffee when you’re on the go, invest in a travel mug to help reduce the amount of paper cups you use. Lastly, when you’re out with friends and visiting a bar or restaurant, opt out of using a straw if it’s unnecessary - it is a small change that makes a big difference. @hoxtongin | hoxtongin.com

AFTERNOON TEA
Botanical Afternoon Tea at Lanes of London Spring is officially here and what better way to embrace the month of May with a trip to Mayfair bar and restaurant Lanes of London to sample their new Botanical Afternoon Tea. Inspired by Spring, the new afternoon tea takes its botanical influence from English gardens and ingredients with floral cocktails and free-flowing bubbles as the perfect accompaniments. Overlooking the greenery of Hyde Park, in a grand Edwardian former mansion block, the tea acts as the perfect pit-stop between shops on Oxford Street. Serving only the very best of British produce, the afternoon tea features a selection of finger sandwiches, such as Fennel-cured Salmon, Beetroot Crema and Pineapple Sage; and classic Egg, with Oak Leaf and Chervil Mayonnaise. Sweet treats, alongside freshly baked scones, clotted cream and Orange and Kafir Lime jam, include a boozy Elderflower, Gin and Lime Marshmallow; Jasmine, Apricot and Nasturtium cones; a fruity Blackcurrant and Hibiscus Tea Mousse in a Chocolate cup; and a Rose, Rhubarb and Chocolate Soil pot. +Spilt Milk
Plum
Located in the heart of bustling King’s Cross St Pancras at the Great Northern Hotel, Plum + Spilt Milk is a vibrant, British restaurant specialising in hearty seasonal British dishes with European flair. Elegant and relaxed the interiors set the scene with sumptuous leather banquettes and cracked black lava tables. The lighting is beautiful and atmospheric with one hundred and fifty hand-blown glass lamps suspended from the high ceiling. Created by Chef Director Mark Sargeant and Executive Chef Mike Denman, the restaurant has recently launched a new seasonal spring menu celebrating quality and fresh produce, including ruby red blood oranges, nutritious mussels and seasonal game. The creamed chestnut mushroom soup served with chestnuts & truffle oil is a decadent and delicious starter; as is the generously portioned and well-presented Pan-fried Loch Fyne scallops, roast cauliflower & sherry vinegar caramel. Moving on to mains and hearty spring dishes of Guinea fowl, parsnip, black cabbage, cider & tarragon sauce, sit alongside the likes of Pollock wrapped in Woodall’s air-dried ham, braised lentils & saffron mayonnaise. Plum + Spilt Milk really know how to cook beautifully simple classic dishes ensuring you will always leave full and extremely satisfied. Other menu highlights include Braised native breed beef with olives, red wine, rosemary, polenta and blue cheese; and Roast loin of venison, truffled celeriac and pickled mushrooms. Side-wise the heritage carrots, with orange and coriander are
delicious and a great accompaniment to most meals; as are the beef dripping chips. For dessert, it’s worth trying the restaurant’s namesake dish ‘Plum + Spilt Milk’ a warming spiced plum sponge with milk icecream. There’s also a British cheese board for savoury fans. Those too full can enjoy one of the little puddings – slightly daintier versions of the full-size desserts – ensuring no one misses out on a sweet treat. As to be expected the restaurant also offers a comprehensive wine, beer and spirit list, with some innovative cocktails which make for the perfect aperitif.

A6 Avant - The Next Generation Bringing a new wave of style, technology and comfort to Audi's well established range of Avant vehicles, the new A6 Avant is poised to change the way you enjoy the road. An instantly recognisable wide, low singleframe grille dominates the front, while the elongated silhouette is enhanced by a muscular roofline flowing into the low profile D-pillar. Distinctively shaped blisters, which visually emphasize the quattro drive, extend over the wheel housings while aggressive side detailing and prominent front spoiler add to the cars sporty aesthetic. At the rear, a decorative trim provides a link between the sleek rear light clusters which have also received a stylish update. Most notably however is the update on the inside. A sharp, luxurious new interior features a user interface so intuitive you

can quite literally talk to the car and it will respond. Think automotive Siri and you'll be close. Digital functionality has never been better, touch screens aplenty and the ability to engage with every aspect of the car so easily makes for one of the most all encompassing drives around. Needless to say, the cars on the road capabilities have also received some improvements including better fuel efficiency, aerodynamic and aeroacoustics that are top of the class and a new mild hybrid system (MHEV) which allows the car to coast between 34 and 99mph. Audi have put substantial time and money into the research and development of these systems across the board from lighting to the infotainment system and the cars mechanics. There's plenty more to come too, look out for the full review coming soon.
V o l v o X C 4 0 Bringing a new dimension to their model range, Volvo’s baby SUV, the XC40 offers a stylish addition to the successful XC series. Taking note from it’s big sisters, the XC40 delivers a staggeringly comprehensive array of technology, driver assist and safety features. Famed for their extensive research into vehicle safety, Volvo have set out to demonstrate the very best in automotive safety offerings in a new market with this car. Based on an all-new platform, the car features a much smaller footprint thanks to reduced overhang on both the front and the rear but suffers little from reduced interior space thanks to clever design. The first product to launch on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) as opposed to the larger SPA platform which underpins everything from the V60 to XC90, the XC40 is set to launch the brand into a new world of automotive excellence, offering the opportunity to conquer the smaller segments in the market. Every smaller car to leave the factory in the forseeable future will now adopt this platform, so there is a lot riding on its success. The exterior continues Volvo’s recent styling ethos with an instantly recognisable front end thanks to the large, imposing front grille, whilst a flash of unique design to the rear pillar and a much
sleeker profile allow you to distinguish immediately between the model variants. This ‘sportier’ aesthetic is completed with a fitting rear end which features a slimline rear window - a continuation from the side windows - that combine to add to the ‘low’ appearance of the car. Not only a benefit to the stylish look, but also a clever way of reducing weight and lowering the centre of gravity thanks to the reduced volume of glass required.

your
Of course, one of the main benefits of the high window line is a hugely improved level of safety, ensuring this car continues Volvo's renowned and impressive record. Aiming to jump in on the action that the three big German brands have been enjoying for some time, the XC40 brings a younger feel and appeal to the brand with a more youthful aesthetic that hopes to engage with a younger audience. The contrast paint option and unique styling that features on this car provide a clear distinction from the larger model range and will deliver a more exciting offering. Competing with the 'big three' is no easy feat, however, Volvo have set themselves up in the best way possible. Taking note from
the success of the latest XC60 and XC90, the interior comprises everything you have come to expect from the premium brands. With an intuitive touchscreen focal point which features the clear, concise and easy to use infotainment system integrated with almost all of the cars functions - from climate control to safety features and a user interface that offers considerable ease of use whether you are a passenger or the driver, the interior cabin immediately shouts style. The leather and nubuck upholstery that comes as standard on First Edition, R-Design and R-Design Pro trims completes the interior space with a comfortable and luxurious finish that shouts substance. Choose to include the optional Harman Kardon premium

sound system and you can enjoy some of the best sound on the road whilst making the most of clear hands-free connectivity and navigation cues. XC40's purchased in the First Edition trim come with a whole host of extras as standard including gear shift paddles, heated steering wheel, 360°surround view cameras, power operated boot, inductive mobile phone charging and autodimming and folding mirrors to name a few. And that's before you even start on the safety features. With almost 30 safety and security features as standard, the XC40 is by no means restricted by its size. Competing with the very best, this class-leading offering is not to be taken lightly. The cars comfortable ride is adaptable thanks to drive mode settings which alter the steering and engine response, as well as the gearbox and brakes to suit your driving requirements, however, Volvo have been keen to maintain their well established levels of driving quality. As a result, you won't find yourself competing with the more performance focused cars in the market. You will enjoy a quiet and comfortable ride on the motorway thanks to excellent cabin soundproofing and supple suspension, but you will receive some apparant feedback from the chassis when driving on B roads as it works hard to combat bumps and body roll although this simply highlights how efficiently this car is working on the road to keep you heading in the right direction. The added benefit of all-wheel drive options only bulsters the cars on-the-road stability.
Despite this, you won't be left wanting for performance in the acceleration and speed stakes thanks to the impressive 2.0-litre T5 engine offering as driven. Packing just under 250hp, and 350Nm of torque, the XC40 is certainly no slouch off the line. Boasting a zero to sixty-two mile per hour time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 140mph, you won't be short of power whether you're pulling a trailor or simply want to drive a little more dynamically. On the motorway, you can indulge in the cars array of driver assist functions which include adaptive cruise control, lane assist and pilot assist which will essentially keep your car driving in the lane at a designated speed whilst maintaining a safe distance from any cars in front - whether they are already in front of you or pull out, as they quite often do! Although not quite reaching the levels of a driverless car, this is the closest you will get in a standard production vehicle. The system works so effectively that it reduces the risk of collision whilst supporting your driving and offers the opportunity to remain more alert on longer journeys. All-in-all, the ride is as we have come to expect from Volvo's SUV range, big or small. An abundance of safety and security that is immediately felt through the ride whilst subtle but apparant body roll through cornering may be slightly disconcerting for some. However the cars grip and stability on the road is so effective that the issue is more cosmetic than anything and doesn't affect the drive of the vehicle overall.

MOTORING Starting from just under £28,000 on the road and reaching just over £40,000 for the T5 First Edition variant, you will get a lot of car for your money regardless of the trim you choose thanks to the extensive list of extras that come as standard throughout the range. Competitively priced in the market, the XC40 has been perfectly placed to tackle the established sales of the existing cars in the market whilst preparing for the onslaught of models that have either recently or are due to hit the market. Volvo's recent model releases have positioned the brand at the top of the SUV world and this latest car to join the line up is only set to establish it further. Supporting the larger XC60 and XC90 while delivering a whole new prospect for buyers in every respect from design to ride, the XC40 will encourage a whole new
demographic to experience the brand. Expanding on the successful sleek Scandinavian style from the larger cars, the XC40 brings a new dynamic with its funkier and less formal aesthetic which signifies the next step in the marque's resurgence. We will have to wait and see where this new, smaller platform takes the brands design team, but all the signs are positive from this first foray into a competitive and growing market. Needless to say, there will be very few instances where we can expect a reduction in the levels of technology and safety, it will just be interesting to see how well they can squeeze into smaller vehicles. Fun and dynamic with the reassuring feel of a much larger car, the XC40 is an impressive offering that will suit a whole host of owners.

Classic City Car with a Bite 1971 Fiat 500F
Fiat's iconic 500 has received much attention over recent years thanks to the relaunch of the small city car, but you can still get your hands on the odd original if you look hard enough. Produced from 1957-1975, the Fiat 500 received numerous updates throughout its lifecycle, however the styling always remained true to the original. There were of course some adaptations that brought with them more functionality, such as the move from 'suicide' doors to a front-hinged variant with the introduction of the 500F or 'Berlina' in 1965. This is one of the few feature variations on the F that distinguishes it from its predecessor, the 500D and is almost the only way to tell the two apart. The 500F spanned the production of both the 500D and 500L 'Lusso', bridging the gap between the two. Sold as a cheaper 'base model' to the Lusso, the 500F actually sports the original interior design from the 50's whilst any Lusso you might find will have a much more modern and somewhat disappointing interior, so 'cheaper' it may have been, but the return of retro has added some serious value to this distinctive feature. This stunning example finished in striking cherry red coachwork with black interior has done 10,000 miles since a full restoration where most of the panels were replaced. It is a unique 500F thanks to a number of upgrades including a 650cc engine boasting considerably more power than the original 499cc block, syncro gearbox, lightened flywheel, unleaded head,
alloy sump, tuned carb, alternator conversion, new starter motor and Borrani wheels with invoices for all works undertaken. If there was ever a Fiat 500 to make an impact, this would be it. Complete with circular white decal to the doors, this is a delightful little city car with some serious bite. Driving is far superior to a standard variant making it perfectly useable both around town and for longer weekend drives. It is a truly must see to be fully appreciated as the last owner was a Fiat 500 enthusiast who has created a lovely and very exciting example.

Tunbury Avenue In our opinion this is one of the largest Character Built Detached Houses on the market for sale in the immediate area with the main parts dating back to the 1930s. With many rooms this property lends itself to a large family home with up to 6 bedrooms or a substantial 4-bedroom house. The room sizes in this property are very generous with space to spread out. The house has benefited from recent refurbishment. You enter this home from the large porch and walk into a tasteful period hallway which features the original plaster cornice block work. There are two separate lounge reception rooms both with fantastic feature fireplaces and a formal dining room that will accommodate a large table for entertaining with views out to the rear garden. There is also a stunning Custom Designed Ream fully fitted kitchen which features a superb Corian worksurface which extends to the breakfast area. The kitchen has been custom made to suit this property. There is also a huge walk in pantry which will accommodate a large American style fridge freezer a full-size chest freezer and a large array of shelving. There is a separate utility room which has a sink unit, cupboards, plumbing for a washing machine as well as space for a tumble dryer. Still on the ground floor there is also a room currently used as a childs play room and a separate study with views over the swimming pool.
ÂŁ950,000 On the first floor there is a long landing with all four double bedrooms and the family bathroom leading off this. The principle bedroom has a large stylish dressing room leading off of it as well as a separate en-suite bathroom which also incorporates a walk-in shower, jacuzzi bath and a twin basin facility. To the rear of this property is a level, wide and long plot that features numerous plants and shrubs as well as a wide patio that extends to the width of the house. There is also a large outdoor swimming pool, ideal for those hot summer days and a large conservatory to relax in. To the front of the property is a large in and out shingle driveway with plenty of space for off road parking as well as an attached garage. The property has gas central heating, double glazed windows and external doors and has been recently repainted externally. This property is ideal for commuting and is within a short drive to junction 3 of the M2 which provides good access by car to London and the Kent Coast. The London coach services for commuters picks up and drops off on this road making a London commute easy. From Rochester and Chatham stations there is also the fast Javelin train service to Stratford and St Pancras. Within the area is also a good selection of schools including Grammar schools. Tunbury Primary School is only a very short walk away.
