FROM THE EDITOR

Christmas preparations are well underway, with sparkling displays beginning to adorn shop windows and Christmas lights ready to dazzle the crowds. There is no time like the present to get your festive gifting underway, before you know it, Christmas Eve will come around and you will be rushing to the computer for some next day delivery gifts or worse, heading to the shops to tackle the mad rush. We’ve put together a few ideas to help get you started with some gifts for him and for her, but the rest you will unforutnately have to do yourself. As always, there is a plethora of events this month and in the coming weeks including the renowned Hyde Park Winter Wonderland which is set to welcome thousands through its doors for a celebration of all things festive. Your winter wardrobe should be well under way, with the chill setting in, there is no time left to squeeze any remaining moments out of those summer dresses and linen shirts, but

it’s also a great excuse to go in search of some winter sun. Fortunately, we’ve found a fantastic spot that is guaranteed to provide some much needed warmth. Morocco’s Casablanca, famous for its Hollywood ties, offers an incredible coastal city break at any time of the year, so if the festivities get a little too much and you need a break, escape for a few days to recoup. If you would rather stay at home and embrace the crisp winter air, then there is plenty to help warm you up. The London restaurant scene continues to expand with a number of new openings in recent weeks, whilst those already established shift their focus to their seasonal winter menus. It’s important to remember that your body will burn more calories trying to stay warm, so you can let yourself enjoy the heartier dishes on offer and not feel too guilty about it. Whatever you find yourself doing this month, please make sure you don’t get too swept up in the mundane and give yourself some time out to enjoy the festivities.

The Lord Mayor’s Show 11th November

Beginning with a river pageant before moving on to the streets of London with a parade of over 6,000 people, military marching bands and floats surrounding a gilded State Coach carrying the newly elected Lord Mayor, The Lord Mayor’s Show is a must-see event in the City that dates back 800 years. With little change in tradition the new Mayor travels by river, from Westminster to HMS President in the Gloriana accompanied by a flotilla of 24 traditional Thames boats. The street procession will begin at 11am with an RAF flypast and goes on until around 2.30pm, covering the area between Bank and Aldwych with the mayor departing from Mansion House for the Royal Courts of Justice where he/she takes an oath of allegiance to the Queen. Finishing in style, the grand finale sees an impressive firework display at 5.15pm from a barge moored in the Thames between Blackfriars and Waterloo Bridges with the City’s skyscrapers acting as a fitting backdrop. Head to Embankment and Gabriel’s Wharf for the best views. The Lord Mayor’s Show, Mansion House, City of London EC4N 8BH lordmayorsshow.london

USA-‐based Julie Windler is an award-‐ winning Functional Potter. Julie was born in London and moved to America with her parents when she was only two years old. She first learned about pottery in the early 70’s Mississippi. Continuously enhancing and developing her skills and knowledge she continued showing her work in galleries, arts and craft shows and as a potter-‐in-‐residence. She pursued her career for several more

years in Virginia and Georgia. This period included teaching pottery on the library channel, as well as receiving a special grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for an arts and crafts television show and eventually moving onto full time television production. She moved with her family to Atlanta and lived there for 25+ years continuing her television career and growing her family. For this reason the pottery took a back seat. In Atlanta, she was a television producer and staff announcer with WXIA-‐TV (and occasionally on-‐ camera), then joined CNN as a news producer and eventually WSB-‐TV as a producer.

In 2015 Julie successfully led a pottery workshop for the Garden Museum in London. The event was broadly attended by local families and children. Julie is represented by Gabriel Fine Arts gallery.

Sailing to Save the Seas Since 1973, the Volvo Ocean Race has provided the ultimate test and is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world. It is sailing’s toughest team challenge and one of the sport’s big three events, along with the Olympics and America’s Cup. The 2017-18 edition which set sail at the end of October will take the teams 45,000 nautical miles around the world, across four oceans, touching six continents, visiting 12 landmark host cities, all in the name of adventure. However, this year marks an important development in the race and what it means for the wider sailing community and beyond. One team has set their sights on not only completing this grueling and immensily challenging task, but doing it in a way that has never been done before. The Mirpuri Foundation ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’ team is unique in more ways than one, despite having to adhere to the strict regulations on boat configuration. Each of the seven competing teams must tackle the vastly changing conditions on their global voyage using exactly the same boat, down to the smallest detail - even the toilet must remain the same.

However, the crew configuration and a host of other factors can be altered to provide teams with, hopefully, an advantage over their rivals. And this is where team Turn the Tide on Plastic is set to make waves in the sport. Comprising a multinational and entirely mixed crew with six female members out of 14 - the closest competitors featuring just three - and most importantly led by the only female skipper in the competition, Dee Caffari, this team is bringing a fresh way of thinking to round the world travel. 50% of the crew are under 30 years of age and just six have competed in the past, making this the least experienced team in the competition. Nevertheless, at the fore is one of the most experienced sailors in the competition despite starting to sail just 17 years ago whilst at university - completing no less than five around the world trips, Caffari is the first woman to have sailed single-handed and non-stop

around the world in both directions and the only woman to have sailed non-stop around the world a total of three times. In 2006 she became the first woman to sail solo, non-stop, around the world against the prevailing winds and currents - the wrong way round - spending 178 days at sea on her own and was awarded an MBE in recognition of the incredible achievement. With such an unfathomable level of experience and knowledge at the helm, there will plenty for the younger members to learn as the adventure unfolds. This teams configuration however is merely the tip of the iceberg. The true nature of this team is clear for all to see on their Volvo Ocean 65’s impressive 537 m2 of sail. Its foundations are established in the United Nations Environment Clean Seas campaign which has been supported by a host of others including the Mirpuri Foundation, Ocean Family Foundation and Sky’s Ocean Rescue campaign. All of which culminates in this flagship vessel spreading the message about the state of our seas. Commited to completing the challenge with minimal impact to the ocean, Dee and her team have signed up to a life with no plastic

in the hope that onlookers will take heed and follow suit, but the message must spread much further if our oceans are to be saved. Volvo Ocean Race leadership has signed a Sustainability Charter, committing the entirety of the organisation to sustainable operations, and to using the race to support efforts to improve Ocean Health, prevent plastic pollution and hopefully increase the global awareness of the situation. Plastic pollution in our oceans has reached a critical point and the problem is rapidly increasing. Plastics are so prevalent in our waters that it has now entered the food chain. Tiny plastic molecules are being consumed by marine life around the world which is consequently passed up the food chain, onto our plates and into our bodies. The issue is so severe that if plastic continues to find its way into the ocean at its current rate, the entire oceanic ecosystem could collapse in a matter of centuries, if not decades. The Turn the Tide on Plastic team hope to not only educate the world as they stop in each of the 12 host cities, but also complete the challenge and compete for the title in order to maximise the exposure of their message.

Dee herself has commited to continue a life without plastic at the end of this incredible race and has already set her sights on continued awareness of the startling position our oceans are in. With a particular focus on single use plastics, her aim is to change peoples behaviour and make them think a little more about their conduct. “A lot of people think ‘oh yeah, it’s out in the ocean, but I live in land’ and they don’t think there’s any connection, so we want to highlight the fact that our everyday rubbish gets blown into the sea, gets eaten by the fish, then we eat the fish and so are actually polluting ourselves in a circular system. There’s some very simple things that everyone can do. Carry a refillable bottle; there’s more and more water fountains coming up, there’s coffee chains where you can give your thermal mug over and say can I have my coffee in there, so just changing peoples behaviour. It’s like the days before ‘bags for life’, nobody ever took shopping bags out with them, we all just got carrier bags and had cupboards full of them at home. Now it’s quite fashionable and actually frowned upon if you don’t have a bag for life, everyone has one in their car or will take one when they go shopping. It’s a behaviour that just takes time to change.” However, it may take longer for some than others to change such an inherent behaviour. “Straws. I went to America and everything I got had a straw in it, everything was in plastic wrapping, I was given plastic cutlery and then you go to France where they have banned all plastic cutlery and things and it shows that it can be done. It’s just whether you are willing to go through the painful process of that transition. We’re not going to change the world in one race, but if we can highlight peoples behaviours and make people think differently, then we are moving a step in the right direction.” You can follow all of the action from this incredible race online at volvooceanrace.com with regular live updates on social media direct from the boat thanks to an impressive array of technological features. Each team is equipped with an On Board Reporter (OBR) who will continually transmit information, photographs and video throughout the race. Not permitted to take part in any way, they are designated to simply report on the action which should make for some exciting viewing. The 2017-2018 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race will culminate in The Hague on 30 June 2018, stopping in Cardiff from 8 - 10 June. The race village will be open from 27 May, so make sure you don’t miss any of the action. If you would like to start making changes to the way you think about plastics and how you use them, then head to any or all of the websites opposite to find out more about the current situation and ways in which you can help start to make a change.

WATCHES

BUGATTI TYPE 390 Incredible power, reliability and performance: qualities which come together to create the magic and unique character of the Bugatti Chiron, “the world’s most powerful and fastest car”, the latest creation from the Molsheim-based luxury car manufacturer. Parmigiani Fleurier - partner of Bugatti since 2004 - has distilled the very essence of this supercar to create a unique timepiece. Specially developed for this remarkable watch, and as exceptional as the 1500-hp quad-turbocharged W16 engine on the Chiron, Parmigiani Fleurier’s patented calibre PF390 is housed in a cylinder boasting an 80-hour power reserve thanks to its two seriesmounted barrels. The transmission of information from the tubular structure to the perpendicularly positioned dial is made possible thanks to a worm screw. Moreover, the modular construction of this movement means that it can be removed from its housing just as an engine would be removed from a supercar for important modifications. It is true to say that, just like the supercar which inspired it, the Parmigiani Fleurier Bugatti Type 390 has a lot going on under the bonnet! Bursting with innovations and brand new solutions, this engine block on the wrist is unique in its horizontal cylindrical construction. This new type of “engine” has been slimmed down so that its diameter is no larger than the regulator of its 60-second tourbillon, which shows the seconds.

Once the diameter of the regulator was determined according to the inertia required, the entire construction (including the barrels which power the “engine”) fit the measurement to form a regular cylinder. Key to this is the patent which was filed by Parmigiani Fleurier when the unique hand-wound mechanical movement was being developed. Inspired by the fluid curves of the Bugatti Chiron, the case is also created from gold, (white gold or rose gold, depending on the version), and engraved on the back with the inscription “EDITION LIMITEE 10 PIECES” (10-piece limited edition). The case, created by Les Artisans Boîtiers - one of Parmigiani Fleurier’s manufacture divisions - is constructed around the cylindrical structure and water resistant to 3 ATM. It stands out thanks to its ability to pivot 12° around its drive shaft to ensure perfect ergonomics around any wrist. The remarkable technical sophistication of the timepiece can be fully admired through the large openings topped with sapphire crystal. The sapphire crystal invites onlookers to dive deep into the heart of the timepiece’s incredibly complexity (the “engine” and flying tourbillon), while the openings over and under the dial reveal the watch’s many gears. To finish the this incredible piece, the alligator leather strap is signed by Hermès and is fitted with a gold folding buckle.

BIG BANG UNICO GOLF

Hublot have designed, developed, manufactured and assembled a module to equip its new NIC movement, which has been specifically created for golf. The MH B1580 movement allows golfers to seamlessly calculate their score whilst on course. The Big Bang Unico Golf has the look of a chronograph and has been conceived as a chronograph, with its movement featuring return-to-zero heart piece cams to ensure the counting mechanism is robust and reliable. The putter-shaped pusher at 2 o-clock activates the mechanism for displaying the number of strokes taken and counts the strokes per hole. The pusher at 4o’clock allows the wearer to move on to the next hole by resetting the stroke counter to zero. The counter at 6 o’clock displays the total number of strokes played and is simultaneously updated. The pusher at 8 o’clock is shaped like a tee and allows you to reset the mechanism and sets the counters to zero at the end of the round. During the round, this button can be locked by rotating it by 45°, thus ensuring that it is not inadvertently activated. The MHUB1580 full-skeleton movement allows the wearer to admire and understand how the timepiece works. The watch comes with two interchangeable wristbands fitted with the ne Click system. ne is made of white leather sewn on rubber and designed like a golf glove, while the other is made of technical fabric with a Velcro fastener to ensure the watch sits perfectly on the wrist. This truly is the ultimate golf watch for the mechanical timepiece connoisseur.

“Dustin Johnson is recognized for his perfect timing - along with power, control and precision. Golf watches exist, but they tend to be digital. His influence and impact on the game inspired ublot s new golf watch. Mechanically advanced, brilliantly functional, contemporary look and easy to use, it is a fusion of ublot s philiosophy and s signature simple, intuitive and extremely effective.” Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO Hublot

Established in 1982, New Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.

With the festive period fast approaching, rather than focusing on one brand or collection, I have chosen to highlight some models that have newly come into stock and catch our eye for different reasons. Marylebone High Street remains a destination rather than footfall area and as such much of our business is done via returning clients and referrals. Given that we are now the exclusive independent agent for some of the brands we work with within Central London, clients also find us when they are looking specifically for that special something. We are here to advise our clients as to the options available even if they have something in mind, it tends to leads to interesting conversations and often changes of heart. Today, there are a number of brands offering similar watches and complications at varying prices but all offer a back story that they hope entices the customer. We have now begun to receive the updated Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra models. The collection has been a mainstay of the Seamaster family for some years now, offering the perfect balance between sportiness and refined luxury. All the A ua Terra models are totally water resistant and built to be quite robust. Delivered in both 41mm and 38.5mm diameters, this is possibly one of the most all encompassing collections Omega have made in recent times. Secondly, we have now taken delivery of the new Limited Edition Pilot’s Watch from IWC. The story of this Pilot’s collection goes back decades and in this case, specifically 1 48, with a faithful reproduction of one of the first and most famous Pilot’s watches; the Mark XI - noted for its durability and case with a soft iron core that protected it from the magnetic fields within the cockpit. Using the 39mm case of the current Mark XVIII series, the dial has been created to mimic one that has aged and detailed in line with historic Pilot’s watches using rectangular plots and smaller numerals. In keeping with the military style of the original that were often worn over bomber jackets, the limited edition is fitted with a khaki green NATO style strap that is both durable, comfortable and currently very on trend. Only 1,948 examples have been made worldwide and this limited edition will be closest the majority of us come to finding anything near to a Mark XI! Keeping the sporty yet subtle theme in mind, my next pick is Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms Bathyscape series. The Fifty Fathoms was one of the original diving watches used by military divers or frogmen all over the world. The first wrist watch to guarantee water resistance to that depth and trusted in the field of combat. The modern Fifty Fathoms is over 45mm in diameter and quite a dramatic timepiece, so the Bathyscaphe variant was offered in a smaller si e with more intriguing dials and vintage styled aesthetic. The series immediately gained a solid following thus Blancpain created variants in different metals and colour combinations. Pictured is our current favourite, using a grey ceramic case that has a brushed finish which is beautiful to the touch coupled with a striking

blue sunburst dial and accompanying blue scratch proof ceramic bezel. Blancpain have not made a non mechanical movement in their history and this model houses essentially a simple three hand calibre with date window that happens to also boast a five day power reserve. ffered also in steel and titanium, the Bathyscape, despite its looks, is very much the modern Fifty Fathoms. Finally, we have one of the cleverest complications made by Breguet. Most will know that the watch industry owes a great debt to Abraham Louis Breguet as his inventions continue to provide the basis for many mechanical watches, but the continued innovation by the brand stays faithful to its founder. The Classique Hora Mundi collection was introduced almost five years ago with decorated dials highlighting continents that the owner could choose. This design, popular at the time across the industry, was to help showcase that this complication allowed the user to view two different time ones on the same watch. nlike other watches offering a similar function, the difference here was that there was no second sub dial or third hand. The redesigned version of this model highlights this better than its predecessors. Removing the beauty but drama of the continental dials, the new version returns to a classic Breguet look with various ama ing finishes. In the simplest terms, the watch mechanically remembers both times the user has set and jumps between them both at the pressing of a button located at 8 o’clock. The clarity of the dial is pure elegance that hides the incredible movement beneath but in turn is only given away by the aperture at 6 o’clock denoting the 24 timezones via cities across the globe. The perfect embodiment of Breguet’s focus on aesthetics alongside side complications, absolutely true of Mr. Breguet’s original direction. These brands amongst many more, are in-store for you to purvey at your leisure. Please visit the Boutique on Marylebone High Street or contact us via telephone or email if your have a particular inquiry. We will happily guide you through the options and discover more than what is obvious about these historic brands.

Coastal City Break in Casablanca Made famous by the mo ies and pac ing art deco design by the buc et load Casablanca is Morocco s latest destination to recei e a touch of lu urious regeneration. ffering an eclectic coc tail of traditions across cultures, this is one place that should be experienced away from the silver screen.

c n a a l b a s a C To many, Casablanca is familiar thanks to Hollywood’s magical touch where the city exists in a dream inspired by the famous 1 42 film starring Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. This November marks the 75th anniversary of the film, and while it wasn’t actually filmed in the city but in a Hollywood studio thousands of miles away, Casablanca is a city undergoing a series of huge changes bringing that mystical magic of the film to life. Ricks Caf from the film may not have technically been in the city, but it is now thanks to a local businesswoman who has set up the ultimate imitation of the famous eatery and of course, while a somewhat of a tourist trap, continues to be a must see for die hard fans. Casablanca itself has a huge art deco influence and sits just after Miami as the second biggest Art Deco styled city in the world. In

the 1920s, Casablanca was the place to be seen by the Parisian elite and the French influence is clear to see in the city’s buildings and little caf s offering traditional Moroccan tea. The French architects were also inspired by the geometric designs of Islamic culture. In some ways parts of the city have almost stopped in time, and some buildings are unfortunately in a state of slight disrepair. However, this is set to change with a huge renovation taking place in the downtown area of the city with the regeneration of the main park and new building works. While elements of the old city will remain, large housing developments modeled on Beverly Hills are planned, as well as a new theatre and a huge new financial hub, merging the old world with the new. Speaking of new, Casablanca is home to the fifth largest mos ue in the world behind the likes of Mecca and Medina and boasts the world’s tallest minaret. Accommodating up to 25,000 worshippers, Hassan II Mosque is a wonder to behold from its towering

visitmorocco.com

TRAVEL 210m tall minaret to the white granite columns, retractable roof and decadent chandeliers. The mosque is a great example of Moroccan artisanship at its best, with hand-carved stone and wood - including the cedar wood ceiling, marble flooring and colourful tiles. The mosque is also relatively new, taking only six years to build and completed in 1993, it sits on the beach with the crashing waves as a dramatic backdrop. Other more modern amenities in the city, which is Morocco’s largest, include Morocco Mall, an IMAX theatre and a giant aquarium. Of course, those looking to take a piece of Moroccan artisan work home can visit the medina to haggle over an assortment of goods from ornate teapots and lanterns to traditional leather bags, slippers and textiles such as rugs and cushion covers. Casablanca is fast expanding and its genuinely surprising how traditional Moroccan culture is mixed with the style of modern day Los Angeles, this is the place to come if you want to feel like a local rather than a tourist and the time to go is most definitely now.

Where to Stay Mazagan Golf and Beach Resort For those looking to escape the city, then a fantastic option for all the family is the five-star Ma agan Golf and Beach Resort. Set over a sprawling 250 hectare site, with 7km of unspoilt beach, Mazagan is just 90km south of Casablanca in El Jadida. Boasting a year-round temperate climate, the resort first opened in ctober 2009 and took just 21 months to build, boasting 500 rooms and suites, bars, 14 restaurants, a world-class spa, nightclub, conference centre, the biggest casino in North Africa, 67 private residential villas and a 18 holes Golf Course, designed by Gary Player. A destination in its own right, the property has been divided into a number of standalone buildings with sand coloured walls with green tiled roofs each boast magnificent views of the beach and pristine gardens. In the main building, the guest rooms and suites are set across four floors, and the interiors at Mazagan have been inspired by the Arabs and Moors allowing for beautiful stairways, floor tiles, large hand carved wooden doors and impressive archways. Each room offers modern furnishings, where warm textures meet dark wood accents, fantastic views, and complimentary Wi-Fi. 80% of rooms also connect offering the ideal accommodation for larger families. The spacious swimming pool is set in the middles of the Grand Riad and is surrounded by lush palm trees and unique day beds – perfect for letting life’s worries pass you by while you laze in the sun. There’s plenty to see and do at the resort, whether it’s a round of golf before a drink at the clubhouse; exhilarating quad-biking on the vast sandy beach; horse riding on one of Ma agan’s impressive steads; or simply relaxing in the beautiful spa after a decadent full body massage or hamman – Mazagan has it all.

Kids will enjoy the dedicated kids club too so parents can relax and enjoy the more adult activities. A short drive away is the traditional port town of El Jadida, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where guests can discover a traditional and authentic Moroccan city and do a little sightseeing and shopping for the day should they wish. Dining at the resort is a pure joy. With an abundance of cuisines to choose from, from a rustic French/ Moroccan fusion to a sushi bar, guests are truly spoilt for choice. Try the many Moroccan pastries for breakfast at the light and airy ‘Market Place’ which offers fantastic views across the courtyard gardens and swimming pool. The many buffet dishes delight the senses with tempting plates from the Middle East, North Africa, India and Asia. Chiringuito Beach Club offers colourful cocktails and light lunches from the afternoon into the evening. Set on the beach, it’s the perfect spot for those looking for food after lounging on the sand, serving up everything from fish kebabs, calamari, seafood salads and huge paellas.

mazaganbeachresort.com

CASABLANCA Fauchon Paris boasts tempting sweet treats in the stunning lobby area, while those looking for a more authentic taste of Morocco can head to Al Firma. Not open every evening, and set around a large open fire with traditional tables and pouffe seating, the menu offers Moroccan favourites, including delicious meat tagines, fresh salads and grilled meat with fresh Moroccan bread. Be sure to wash it all down with a Moroccan wine. The atmospheric evening is topped off by classic belly dancers and a Moroccan oud performance. With beautiful blue accents, the Sel de Mer restaurant by the casino creates the feeling of being under the sea and offers a large variety of freshly caught local fish from Sea Bass to John Dory and much more, prepared just how you like it on a barbecue grill. Due to its impressive si e, overcrowding isn’t a problem at Ma agan and you certainly won’t manage to see it all in one visit. But that’s perfectly fine as it gives you the greatest excuse to return again.

delicious confit Adlington duck, heritage carrot and chicory salad with honey and dill dressing and grilled Cornish s uid with Cima di Rapa, pancetta and Calabria chillis whilst the shellfish offering brings delights such as grilled scallops in the shell with garlic, spinach and pancetta and Carlingford rock oysters. If you are fairly hungry or happy to share your starter, then the Ploughmans is a great choice. Featuring York ham, homemade pork pie, Kirkham’s cheese, pickled onion, Pippin apple, celery, s uash chutney and London bloomer, it is also the perfect choice for a lunch stop. Mains include the restaurant’s flagship grilled marinated Bavette with horseradish, watercress salad and chips which can be perfectly paired with a 2016 Clare alley Shira . Alternatively, you can opt for a slightly lighter dish such as the grilled Tranche of Torbay brill, brown shrimps, cockles, dried tomatoes and moscatel which is offered with a fantastic 2015 Saint Mont Blanc. Whatever you choose and whatever time you visit, you will not be disappointed with the food and drink on offer. The wine selection will appeal to all, from novice to connoisseur and offers a simple and reasonably priced way of enjoying some excellent wine and food pairings, all just a stones throw from Bank station.

RECIPE

Ox Cheek Cottage Pie Serves 4

Ingredients for the Ox Cheek:

1kg ox cheek | fine sea salt and cracked black pepper | 25g plain flour | 40g onions, finely chopped | 1 clove garlic, chopped | 90ml red wine | 250ml beef jus or stock

Ingredients for the Mash:

500g Desiree potatoes, chopped | 60g butter | 250ml double cream | Maldon sea salt

Ingredients for the Mash:

4 x 5cm pieces of centre cut bone marrow (1 per person) | 120g carrots | 120g celeriac | 600ml remaining cooking liquid, topped up with bone marrow gravy | 30g toasted breadcrumbs | fresh horseradish, for grating

Preparation: Preheat the oven to 140°C/275°F/gas 1. Trim the ox cheek of any fat and sinew and season with cracked black pepper and fine sea salt. Flour the ox cheek and sear in a hot pan until golden all over. Drain and set aside. ●

Add the onions and garlic to the pan and sauté until soft. Deglaze with the red wine, then add the beef jus and the ox cheek and bring to the boil.

Transfer to a dish with a lid and place in the oven for 3-4 hours, until tender. Remove the ox cheek, break into smallish pieces and set aside. Pour any leftover liquid into a jug and make up to 600ml with gravy. ●

Increase the oven temperature to 180°C/350°F/gas 4. Put the bone marrow on an oven tray and place in the oven for 12-15 minutes, until just cooked. Set aside.

Dice the carrots and celeriac into roughly 1cm pieces. Cook them in boiling salted water until tender, then refresh in ice-cold water and set aside.

Place the chopped potatoes in cold water seasoned with salt and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until cooked through. Drain the potatoes and air-dry in a colander before passing them through a potato ricer. Put the butter and double cream in a saucepan and heat until reduced by half, then fold into the potato puree and season to taste. ●

To assemble the pie, place a piece of bone marrow in the centre of each individual pie dish, or arrange around one larger dish if making a family pie. Place the hot meat, veg and gravy around the marrow, then pipe the mash on top. Glaze under the grill until golden brown, and finish with the toasted breadcrumbs and freshly grated horseradish. ●

Calabrese’s Cocktails with Gerry Calabrese

East End drinks maverick Gerry Calabrese has built a reputation as one of the greats in London’s bar scene. From bartending in top London venues such as Lab, Dust, and Sex in the City he went on in 2008 to launch his own multi award winning East End bar, The Hoxton Pony followed by most recently in 2016 Wringer and Mangle situated in the neighbouring London Fields, to much critical acclaim. His pedigree has also seen him act as a drinks columnist as well as consultant and event planner for numerous high profile private clients including iles Deacon, warovs i, eroni Nastro urro, Channel , and ulberry.

It’s safe to say that the Summer is well and truly over and the long nights are closing in, and as we accept that the warm weather and summer picnics are becoming a distant memory our minds turn towards winter markets, warming drinks and festive plans. What better time of the year than winter to cosy up with friends and enjoy some incredible concoctions? We have the ever reliable mulled wine and cider varieties, the Hot Toddy and popular dark spirit cocktails that are readily available in almost every bar you visit, but what if you’re in the mood for a lighter spirit, such as gin Well, a few years ago I had the same dilemma so I set about creating a winter warming, gin based concoction that is perfect for sitting by the fireplace on a long, winters night.

Gin and carefully set the li uid abla e for about 30 seconds to toast the nuts and spices which rapidly infuse with the Hoxton Gin to create a deliciously spiced and caramelised flavour. Grate a little nutmeg over the flame for a beautiful toasted aroma and them extinguish, before straining into your drinking vessel. Layer your citrus raisin foam over the top and serve with a cinnamon stick stirrer. As a huge crowd pleaser and perfect for the colder months, this warm cocktail is guaranteed to knock your socks off as well as impress your friends. While you’re at it, why not pick up some Hoxton Gin for the perfect gift these Christmas.

Shoryu Shoreditch Popular Ramen group Shoryu Ramen have launched their 11th site in vibrant Shoreditch on Great Eastern Street. Smaller than some of their other branches, but with the same unmistakable style and great exposed walls and an open kitchen, the location offers the same tasty signature Hakata tonkotsu ramen bowls, Shoryu buns, cocktails and Gekkeikan Royal Warrant sake. While the signature ramen is a firm favourite, we love the Kimchi Seafood Tonkotsu with fiery kimchi broth, prawns, scallops, s uid, nitamago egg, kikurage mushrooms, nori seaweed, spring onion, seasoned beansprouts, sesame, fried shallots; and the Dracula Tonkotsu, rich 12-hour pork broth ramen comes

topped with char siu barbecue pork belly, nitamago egg, kikurage mushrooms, spring onion, sesame, ginger, nori seaweed topped off with caramelised black garlic mayu, garlic chips. Just make sure you don’t have a hot date after ther menu highlights include the many fluffy Shoryu buns such as char siu barbecue pork belly; soy marinated chicken karaage; and grilled halloumi and shimeji mushrooms; Tiger Prawn Tempura; and Kushikatsu belly pork and onion skewers in crisp panko. The Botanist Sloane Square Just a stone’s through from Sloane S uare station, The Botanist Sloane S uare has reopened its doors after an extensive refurbishment to entice and welcome the elegant elite of Chelsea and beyond once more. Ahead of the restaurant’s 10th anniversary next year, the sophisticated refurbishment by Russell Sage Studio has allowed the venue to become two distinct spaces with glass panels separating the bar and restaurant area. The clever move ensures diners can enjoy a more intimate atmosphere while the bar remains bu y and free-flowing. Pastel colours have played a large part in the makeover and the dining room has been adorned in soft lilac, rose and spearmint tones enhancing the feeling of openness and light whilst also complimenting the iconic chandeliers and art-deco style bar. Another key feature is the modern, watercolour tropical prints and botanical tiles each complementing the pastel colour scheme while also paying homage to famous botanist and Chelsea resident, Sir Hans Sloane. The menu has also had a makeover with new Head Chef, Ameya Bhalekar previously of 34 Mayfair, The Savoy, High Road House creating a varied all-day menu featuring refined modern European dishes using only the very best of the K’s heritage breeds and responsibly sourced fish. Everyone can enjoy the wide menu thanks to the array of dishes on offer. Starters do lean heavily to the seafood side with classics like oak smoked Scottish salmon; and prawn and avocado cocktail, as well as fresh sashimi; scallops with burnt cauliflower pur e and crispy serrano ham; and Tuna tartare with avocado, radish, macadamia and prawn crackers. But you can also enjoy Table sharing nibbles like the crispy duck chips and buttermilk chicken pieces with ranch dressing. Mains are divided into three from signature classic plates to fish and grill choices. Classics such as Mussels, white wine, garlic and fries; and Wiener Schnit el provide great hearty fare, while grills such as sirloin and hanger steaks, and a Longhorn beef burger with cheese and bacon will fulfil any meat-eaters needs. Fresh fish highlights include tuna with pinto beans and sweetcorn; Seabass, leeks, sea aster, sauce Gribiche; and Lemon sole. For something lighter a range of salads are also available along with a whole host of side such as savoy cabbage, lardons and onions; chips, fries or mash; and grilled spiced avocado with crispy uinoa and tomatoes. While there are many wines - including 20 by the glass - beers and spirits on offer at The Botanist, it is safe to say you can’t visit without trying a cocktail or two. Continuing the botanical theme, the carefully created cocktails use numerous natural ingredients and fresh flowers and fruit to garnish. Must-try sips include the Gin The Bean Stalk - a mix of gin, green chartreuse, absinthe, sugar snap peas and lemon; and Honey Rider Tan ueray gin, Cr me de Mure, honey mead, blackberries, lemon, thyme. The bar also provides the perfect spot for people watching in the bustling s uare thanks to the luxurious high stools and large floor-to-ceiling windows. Taking pride of place in the centre of Berkeley Homes’ new landmark development, ‘One Tower Bridge’, The Coal Shed is the first London outing for restaurateur Ra ak Helalat, who has already garnered a host of fans with The Coal Shed’s original Brighton outlet and sister restaurant The Salt Room, which opened in Brighton in February 2015 and just won Best Seafood Restaurant 2017 by the Caterer maga ine in partnership with Seafish. The new London location brings the original restaurant’s approach to cooking the finest steak and seafood to its new branch, sourcing seasonal, sustainable meat and seafood, including their range of 35-day, dry-aged Scottish steaks from the North Highlands and a dedicated specials board featuring some rare breed cuts and a selection of fresh fish and crustaceans from the South coast boats that deliver directly to the restaurant every day. Located opposite the iconic Tower of London, ne Tower Bridge is a mixed-use development of highspecification apartments, commercial and cultural space. With fantastic riverside views, The Coal Shed joins the likes of The Ivy Tower Bridge, a 00-seater theatre and The Lalit Hotel, a luxury bouti ue hotel with 70 beautifully designed rooms. Seating 124 people, the stunning restaurant features floor-to-ceiling windows which flood the location with light, while wooden frames and tables with neutral and sage green leather chairs, clever lighting and contemporary crockery come together to create a warm and intimate atmosphere. Diners can watch the chefs in action at the open kitchen and the glamourous bar featuring gold and marble accents is perfect for a pre or post dinner drink.

The team behind The Coal Shed The Salt Room in Brighton have helped to create the food and drinks menu. Executive Chef Dave Mothersill and Executive Pastry Chef Laura Petersen head up the restaurant’s food philosophy and menu while Head Bartender Matt ttley has crafted an impressive drinks list, which includes a selection of innovative cocktails, wines and Champagnes. Start your meal with one of the small plates. Designed to encourage people to share dishes, it’s a great way to ease into the meal and must-tries include the moreish crispy beef tendons with kimchi ketchup; Porthily oyster with gherkin, dill and jalapeno; and sour dough served with pure whipped beef fat. Moving on to starters and the hearty smoked short rib with chipotle, coffee and pickles is the star of the show, and ideal if you want a meat-fix before trying some of The Coal Shed’s renowned seafood. The rkney scallop with s uash, chestnut and sage is also very good, as is the charcoal celeriac, salt baked vegetables and tru e. The Meat, Fish and Fire selection features every cut imaginable from chateaubriand and porterhouse to ribeye and fillet. There’s also Moroccan spiced smoked goat to share as well as veal cutlet and the supremely tender Suffolk black pork t-bone served with BBQ cabbage, black garlic and nduja. The blackboard shows the day’s breeds, cuts and weights. Fish fans will rejoice in the whole fish to share served with

mussels, smoked bacon, Sussex cider and creamed potatoes; as well as the fire roasted shellfish which at 25.00 per person is fantastic value for a fresh selection of shellfish from the South Coast and Scotland including prawns, langoustines, scallops, crab claws, oysters and mussels grilled over fire with garlic, lemon and parsley. Impressive side dishes, which are almost too good to share, include grilled lobster, beef dripping chips, iceberg with bacon, blue cheese; and pickled onion rings with a hot cheese foam that definitely needs to be eaten before it gets cold. Portions are generous but if you can manage dessert then there are lots of tempting treats such as Baked Alaska and an Aero, malt and praline chocolate bar. There’s also a selection of sweets for those that are too full to manage dessert such as doughnuts, chocolate coal, varying flavour toasted marshmallows and fudge. Round it all off with one of the bar’s espresso martini’s. A very welcome addition to the London dining scene, we predict The Coal Shed London having just as much success here as its original outpost. pen seven days a week, 12noon until 10pm, those dining before a show at The Bridge Theatre or wanting an express lunch, can opt for the restaurant’s pre-theatre menu which is available from 12noon until 6.30pm and 30pm until 10 30pm at 20 for two courses or 24 for three.

A s t o n Martin DB11

Aston Martin’s illustrious history of DB series cars is all thanks to one David Brown whom in 1 47 bought the company saving it from a fate that has reared its head more than once for the British mar ue. Today, the company is continuing its century old traditions in authentic British automotive manufacturing with a considerable dose of modern thinking as part of the company’s Second Century’ plan. The DB11 is the first product to launch and sets the tone for what you can expect from the future. The ex uisite design portrayed by all DB models before it is mirrored here with striking and subtle lines amalgamating over a sleek, flowing body whilst clearly illustrating a sign of intent. Its iconically shaped, exaggerated front grille and countless bonnet and body vents offer apparent indicators as to what lies beneath, and the rear profile doesn’t hold back either. Large sliced’ dual rear exhausts protrude like cannons from a ship again displaying this cars potential.

A simple press of the illuminated engine start button and the monster is awoken. First whirling into life with a satisfying blend of electronic and mechanical noises, then to the main event; the loud roar from the engine as the 12 ignites. The noise takes its time in settling and even then, you could be mistaken for thinking it is still yet to. Despite resting in GT’ mode - the most sedate of the cars drive options - you will not be finding much in the way of uiet for those you pass. Inside, the cabin is fairly well insulated from the rumble, as long as you don’t press the accelerator too hard or open the window, but where’s the fun in that Shift the drive mode to Sport’ using the steering wheel mounted button and the 8-Speed F transmission will immediately recognise that it is not uite in the correct gear for uicker response and will likely drop down to the next one. Push again and you will engage Sport ’. Now the car will distinguish between the need for slightly uicker response if you were to put your foot down to, I am going

to put my foot down, period.’ Changes come much swifter in a much more raw fashion, dropping rapidly through the gears in deceleration ensuring the car is in the optimal ratio in anticipation for the brake to be released and accelerator once again planted to the floor. Besides the obvious benefits of much uicker response, it also adds an incredible amount to the soundtrack. olume within the cabin whether you open the window or otherwise is increased instantly and continues to do so as you accelerate through the gears. Taking note from DB models before it, the DB11 possesses many attributes that can be traced back, but one thing that this car brings is a new heart. Nestled under the extended bonnet sits an impressive 5.2-litre 12 twin-turbo engine designed in-house. Producing a staggering 608PS and 700Nm of tor ue, this is the most powerful production DB in history and the performance figures are happy to agree. Accelerating from ero to sixty-two in

3. seconds and continuing to a top speed of 200mph, this is a serious piece of automotive engineering. This car has taken the term form and function and created something uite incredible. Every aspect of the DB11 has been designed to be a fully functional pu le piece in its intricate web of innovative aerodynamics. Whether it is over or through the bodywork, airflow has been maximised on this car to create impressive stability whilst maintaining the clean, unspoilt surfaces we have all come to expect from an Aston Martin DB. High pressure air is taken from inside the wheel arch through gill-like curlicue and released via concealed vents within the iconic sidestrakes to reduce front-end lift and that’s just the beginning. Rear-end lift is combated using the Aston Martin AeroBlade . You mean you haven’t heard of the AeroBlade before Well, it is essentially a virtual spoiler which works by feeding air through discreet intakes hidden at the base of each C-pillar, allowing it

“This is not only the most important car that Aston Martin has launched in recent history, but also in its 103-year existence. The DB11 rightfully places Aston Martin once again as a leading brand in the luxury automotive market. Dr. Andy Palmer

to flow through the bodywork before being vented as a jet of air from the rear decklid. Does that help Simply put, it takes the air internally through the car rather than over a conventional spoiler which would completely destroy the cars aesthetic appeal I guess. The bonnet has received some impressive engineering to match. Crafted from a single piece of aluminium, the clamshell design is front hinged adding an extra touch of theatre when you fancy taking a look at the impressive engine, but also aids in the aerodynamic construction of the car. What makes this all the more impressive is the fact that they have managed to create such an archetypal Aston Martin complete with grille, profile and - although updated and distinguished - the light styling whilst incorporating such high levels of aerodynamic detailing and modern functionality. There is no mistaking this car for anything other than an Aston Martin, yet, you may well have been if you had merely read about it. The development that the company has and is continuing to go through in terms of technology progression has been a long time coming, but boy are they doing a good job of it now. As a true 21st century Aston Martin, the DB11 combines the very latest technology developed in conjunction with technical partner Daimler AG. A striking 12 LCD display sits at the heart, offering up the all-new instrument cluster which adapts to the drive settings and provides visual references for car settings, navigation, phone and media. There is also a centrally-mounted 8 screen which sits proudly atop the centre console and is controlled through an intuitive rotary control. Paired with an impressive Bang lufsen BeoSound system, you can enjoy an e ually loud soundtrack on the inside as passers by on the out. The infotainment system has been completely revamped and now offers the level of uality and ease of use you would expect

from a company of Aston Martin’s calibre. An all new auto-park assist feature and 360-degree birds eye view camera to aid in manoeuvring at slow speeds are also offered. Aston Martin have adapted to the modern luxury market to offer an exciting colour palette along with a vast array of customisable detailing options. From interior features to bonnet blades and carbon sills, your choices are virtually limitless. Added space for passengers in the rear as well as more capacity for luggage add to the all-round appeal that this GT offers. Aston Martin have produced a true Grand Tourer here. Restrained, smooth and comfortable when controlled and a ruthless driving machine when unleashed. All in the distinguished luxurious British style and class that the Aston Martin brand is renowned for. Not necessarily the most technologically e uipped, but certainly a hard package to beat.

Finished in crisp white coachwork with contrast black leather interior, this Aston Martin DB6 antage from 1 6 is a rare breed indeed. The only right hand drive DB6 antage to leave the factory in white, it is uite simply, one of a kind. Furthermore, a long history of M T’s and the original service book suggest a genuine mileage of just 44,000 miles. Succeeding the DB5, the DB6 featured improved aerodynamics and higher specification including additional luggage space and comforts for passengers. The antage boasted an impressive 330PS over the standard 286PS and 400Nm of tor ue offering a 0-60mph time of 8.4 seconds and top speed of 150mph. wned since 1 0 by an Aston Martin specialist as a personal car, this example has been incredibly well kept and is the finest to grace the walls of the Chelsea Cars showroom. Winter is Coming...

5 Top Autumn Tips for Peonies from Alec White, Peony Specialist at Primrose Hall Nursery

As Winter draws nearer there are lots of jobs to keep us gardeners busy, getting rid of leaves, collecting seed, dividing plants and generally tidying up to keep on top of everything. For those of us with peony plants in the garden, there is slightly less to do and there is more time to enjoy the pleasures of autumn in the garden. Even though the peony has a relative short flowering period April - June ; but as the Summer comes to an end, the peony’s foliage unfailingly brings unexpected pleasure and interest. Herbaceous peonies that die down completely in the winter have the strongest Autumnal colour with the intersectional varieties such as Paeonia ‘Morning Lilac’ providing a strong, dignified show of orange, red, green and purple foliage whilst the remainder of the garden is in decline. Some of the earlier flowering varieties such as aeonia off u ra lena or aeonia oral arm may start to change colour and die off whilst the remainder of the garden is in full summer swing in early August. Tree peonies for example, aeonia x lemoinei i oon can be e ually impressive before they too lose their large, divided leaves, leaving

their woody stems nobly standing proud in the flower beds. Even as the peony dies down for the winter, it does so gracefully and with panache, reminding us of its status as an pre-eminent garden plant and of its flowering glory earlier in the summer. The fleeting elegance of the peony’s big, blousy blooms in Summer may lead some to think that peonies are delicate and in need of protection from the harshness of Winter, but they would be wrong peonies will survive the harshest English Winter they are hardy to about -20C and actually flower better following a cold Winter. Despite looking delicate then, peonies are actually very tough which makes them low maintenance and easy to grow. Peonies have been grown in the K since the fifteenth century and are a firm favourite in the English garden. They are long-lived plants that demand little from the gardener - some will happily live for 100 years; each year getting stronger and flowering more profusely. Peonies generally suffer little from pests or disease and rarely suffer from attack by armies of slugs and snails. E ually peonies tend not to be eaten by rabbits or deer either.

Top Tips for Autumn 1) Whilst herbaceous peonies may look like they are dying above ground, they are in fact working very hard beneath the ground; the flowering buds for the next year will be developing and growing so avoid cutting them back until late October/early November. You can cut them back to about 2.5cm from the ground, this helps prevent potential disease (such as peony wilt) in the spring. Burn or dispose of the dead foliage to avoid spreading disease (don’t use it in the compost heap). 2) Peonies will thrive in pretty much any soil and they do especially well in clay or heavier soils, provided that the soil does not get waterlogged in the winter. If you have a lighter soil, consider feeding with bone meal or other general well-balance fertiliser.

cut back the older stems to about 2.5cm or, if in doubt, cut back every third stem; this will produce a bushier plant. Equally you can lightly trim back to just above the season’s new growth to keep your tree peony looking neat and tidy. Pruning in the autumn may mean fewer flowers in the spring, but this is a temporary sacrifice for a stronger, healthier plant in the long-term. Though it seems as if the imminent arrival of Winter is killing off your garden peonies, bear in mind that the peony’s aboveground deathly appearance is its defence against the Winter, that it is working hard developing its flower buds for next year and that it welcomes the cold weather. And as Winter fades, as it always does, the peony will emerge victorious in the Spring; stronger and with more blooms than in previous years.

3) Autumn is the ideal time to split and move well-established herbaceous peonies, despite the widely held view that peonies don’t like being moved. It is best to move your peony in late October/early November. Be careful not to damage the roots, so take as big a clump as possible (ensuring you have at least 3-5 ‘eyes’ or buds). Dig a large enough hole and add some organic matter. Remember not to plant your peony too deep (the crown of the root should not be more than 2.5-5cm below the surface) it will like to feel the cold in the winter - and allow your peony time to settle in to its new position. Given the substantial lifetime of the peony, allowing it a season to settle down is a small price to pay for a long-lived, strong and healthy plant. 4) Whilst you can plant container grown peonies in the garden at any time of the year, Autumn is the best time of year to plant bare-root peonies. Remember to buy a good-quality bare-root peony for best results; the mother plants will be lifted from the fields in September/October and split so if you see bare-roots for sale earlier in the year beware because they may have been sitting in cold storage and potentially deteriorating. Look for bare-roots with at least 3-5 ‘eyes’ or buds and remember to plant them with the crown no more that 2.5-5cm below the surface. 5) Tree peonies rarely require pruning but from time to time it may be necessary to keep wellestablished plants under control. Autumn is the ideal time to give tree peonies a light prune and they generally respond very well to trim. To encourage a better growth habit, primrosehall.co.uk

SAVILLS

Positive changes ahead for UK lettings market with Euan Williams, Head of Lettings, Savills Maida Vale

At the 2017 Conservative Party Conference, Sajid Javid, MP for Bromsgrove, announced plans to regulate the lettings industry. It is an announcement that we, along with the industry, welcome having campaigned for many years to help improve the private rented sector. Currently anybody can set up a lettings agency, without a licence or ualification. This has caused issues with deposits not being properly protected. In some cases lettings agencies are being set up with no security for tenants or landlords, who

later disappear taking any deposits with them. In 2015, Savills set up The Lettings Industry Council TLIC to bring together representatives from all of the industry bodies and schemes in the sector. The purpose of the group was to help determine exactly what was necessary to improve the lettings industry for both tenants and landlords. This announcement from the Conservative Party means that the government is finally addressing the concerns of industry members. The key plans they have outlined for the future are

SAVILLS Mandatory for every landlord to be part of an ombudsman scheme - currently only letting agents are required to join an ombudsman scheme. This planned change in the law would give all tenants access to quick and easy dispute resolution over issues like repairs and maintenance. Legislation that all lettings agents must be registered in order to practice - the law will mean that agents must register with an appropriate organisation, adhere to training requirements and comply with an industry code of conduct. All Savills lettings teams are ARLA Propertymark protected and all lettings staff must complete their ARLA Propertymark ualification within 12 months of joining. Incentivise landlords to offer longer term tenancies - during the Autumn budget the government will announce a new set of incentives for landlords who offer tenancies of at least 12 months. We hope these tax incentives for landlords will help ease the burden of recent tax changes. Consult with the judiciary on the case for a new housing court - the government will explore whether a new housing court could

improve existing court processes, reduce dependence on legal representation and encourage arbitration, with benefits for both tenants and landlords. Ultimately, they are looking to save time and money when dealing with disputes, which are currently costly and can be very time consuming.

It seems to me that every time I pick up a paper, or watch the news, any mention of the property market in the UK comes with a measure of doom and gloom these days. However, interest rates are still very low and are not likely to rocket up, so it’s not a remotely dangerous time to buy or sell a home. Here are my three reasons homeowners should be optimistic about the prospects for the property market in E14. The first and main reason to be happy is illustrated very clearly in the chart above. Long term house price growth in the area has been strong, with the average annual rate of growth since 2000 sitting at an admirable 15.3 per cent. The broad base of the market and the solid fundamentals underpinning it mean we expect this to continue in the medium and long term.

Year The next reason to be happy is the abundance of liquidity in the market. In laymen’s terms, this means that lots of people are buying and selling and the market isn’t in danger of stagnation. In the second quarter of 2017 (the latest full quarter for which data is available), there were 333 sales. This is 3.7 higher than the same quarter just eight years ago.

The third reason to be happy is the amount of sanity in the national market, which has come about because of more grown-up mortgage regulation. The meteoric rise in prices in the area pre-2008 led to price ‘froth’ building up in the market, which ultimately caused the 2008 crash. This time around is very different and opportunities are everywhere. Why don’t you pop into my office for more info? Spencer Fortag
