FROM THE EDITOR
There has been an unnerving chill in the air over the past month, despite possibly over zealous weather reports hinting at an Indian Summer. Hopefully, there is still time to catch some much needed rays in the UK before it is time to jet off to find your fix. Fortunately, we are blessed in this country with an abundance of high quality escapes to help you ease through the transition to winter and often find yourself wondering why you ever wanted summer to stay...ok, maybe not often, but every now and then. We found a pleasant little spot in Woburn Forest to relax and unwind and give you a chance to ponder your next move. At home in the capital, as always, there is plenty going on with new restaurants opening all over, adding to the incredible diversity we have come to love. The weekend brunch craze is still going strong with more menus being added to the choice weekly. One that is not to be missed is a Supreme Saturday at the City branch of Yauatcha with phenomenal food and a few drinks thrown in too.
For film fanatics, that time has come again where the British Film Institute opens its doors to the world of home-grown and international cinema to explore and celebrate the world of film, so make sure you get in early to avoid disappointment. Alternatively, if fashion is more your style, then you will be welcomed into the rich history of Liberty’s fabric story and how influential it has been over the decades at the V&A. If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to restock your winter wardrobe, before SS16 collections start flooding the shop floor and remember to pick up some substantial layers, I have a feeling it’s going to be a cold month. And if all else fails, you could always reside yourself to having a little celebration of life with a glass or two of champagne to warm the mood. G.H.Mumm can show you the way, from F1 Podium to Parisian Nightclub or indeed, at home. This month is all about taking a breath and finding some time for yourself before, dare I say it, Christmas comes around. With endless parties and events, not to mention the day itself, you will soon find that time is even more precious.

Celebrating 140 years since the opening of the Liberty department store, the Fashion and Textile Museum will this month present Liberty In Fashion, with a look at its role in design and the decorative arts since 1875. The exhibition will see a display of over 150 garments, textiles and objects charting Liberty’s history as ‘the’ fashionable place to shop and exploring its impact on British fashion, from Orientalism and Aesthetic dress in the 19th century, through Art Nouveau and Art Deco in the early 20th century, and the revival of these styles since the 1950s. The exhibition will showcase Liberty’s strong relationships with designers from Arthur Silver of Silver Studio to collaborations with Jean Muir, Cacharel, Yves Saint Laurent and Vivienne Westwood. Advance booking online is recommended but tickets may be purchased in person on the day of the visit, subject to availability. Tickets priced at £9 adults, £7 concessions, £6 students. Frieze Art Fair & Masters Frieze Art Fair, the country’s leading contemporary art fair, returns to Regent’s Park for its 13th edition this October. Together with over 160 of the most highly respected contemporary art galleries in the world, the fair will include specially commissioned art works and curated exhibitions, as well as ‘Live’ a new performance art element that was introduced last year.
Packed into a vast temporary structure in the park, with work by around 1,000 contemporary artists crammed in, the free-to-view Sculpture Park, located in the English Gardens of Regent’s Park, is a particularly popular aspect of the fair, where serious sculptural works can be seen in the open air. Running alongside Frieze and following its successful debut three years ago Frieze Masters is a delightful showcase of Old Masters and art up to the 20th Century. Located in a bespoke structure on Gloucester Green, to the north east of Regent’s Park, the fair is a short walk from its sister event, Frieze and together the two fairs present a unique perspective on the relationship between old and new art. Frieze Masters showcases over 90 of the world’s leading galleries, with works by great artists like Warhol and Basquiat, Avedon and Hockney, Rubens and Picasso on display and for sale. A programme of talks will also take place at the fair, bringing together leading international artists with the directors and curators of renowned museums. If you choose to visit Frieze Art Fair between 5pm and 7pm you’ll get a discounted ticket at just £15, or opt for a combined ticket and you’ll get into sister fair, Frieze Masters too.

PAD London Art Fair Returning to Berkeley Square, Mayfair for its ninth year, the PAD London Art Fair (Pavilion of Art & Design London), brings together exceptional works of modern art, design, decorative arts, photography, jewellery and tribal art from 1860 to today. The fair, which takes place at the same time as the Frieze and Frieze Masters art fairs, helps to attract the world's most influential art buyers to London each October.
The Other Art Fair If you are looking for an alternate art scene, taxidermy, immersive theatre, craft beers and DJ sets all take centre stage at The Other Art Fair. Returning to The Old Truman Brewery for its 8th edition, the fair takes place during Frieze Week, the busiest week in the UK's art calendar, and distinguishes itself by being an art fair where unrepresented artists can showcase their pieces, and visitors can take something home without breaking the bank. Not one to be shunned, all 130 artists have been chosen by a selection of committee experts and with more than one thousand pieces starting at £50 as well as many events such as curated walks and live music, this is a refreshing look at the art world.

Dare, Win, Celebrate G.H.Mumm have been in the celebration business for over 180 years and are now set to change the very definition of what it means to celebrate.
It is an iconic snapshot of sporting success known around the world. A jeroboam of G.H.Mumm joins the fastest drivers on the podiums of Formula 1, as they share the outpourings of victory with their teams and supporters. A celebration that they share with you. The tradition of paying tribute to the winner of a Grand Prix with a bottle of champagne began in 1950. That year, Reims hosted the first ever French Grand Prix at the Gueux circuit overlooking the rolling Champagne countryside. It was only right that the winner received a bottle of champagne; even the spectators who flocked to the course would share a bottle over their picnics. So began the love story between the most demanding of wines and the most adventurous of races. The bottle was warm when the winner of the 1966 Le Mans 24 hour race, Jo Siffert, climbed onto the podium. The cork popped out unexpectedly with the pressure, spraying a fine shower over the delighted audience below. The following year Dan Gurney, winner of the same race, deliberately repeated Siffert’s gesture. It was swiftly adopted by all motor racing champions, with Formula 1Ž winners making this famous victory splash de rigueur in the world of motor racing. Today, celebration takes on a whole new meaning and is no longer reserved for the elitist of motorsport racers.
G.H.Mumm have reinterpreted the term with the help of global musician David Guetta to offer a stunning new limited edition bottling of the iconic Cordon Rouge. The platinum finish signifies success whilst offering a standout piece for the table. Whether you are in a club or celebrating a little more privately, you cannot escape the stunning appearance which not only allows you celebrate your success, but also to reflect on it. G. H . M u m m have set out to bring celebration to the world. Now established as the official supplier to Formula 1, they have decided to branch out and spread the feeling across disciplines and the world. Mark Ronson helped launch the world’s first digitally connected champagne bottle earlier this year which will communicate with the nightclub when the bottle is opened and transform the experience around you. Now, David Guetta will be performing a one-off concert at the start of the Melbourne Cup to demonstrate the brands position as official partner and you can be sure to see plenty of platinum bottles during the event. From F1 to horse racing, with some evening celebration thrown in for good measure, G.H.Mumm are here to stay and they look like they are here to celebrate, so put on your dancing shoes and head to the club, there might just be some platinum Cordon Rouge waiting for you.

FINANCE WITH MATT GOLD
The revival of “Made in Japan” and China just party on Our financial insider reviews the global markets The long awaited rate hike from US Fed did not happen in September. The Fed is worried that the fragile emerging markets especially their weak currencies may not be able to hold up. It is great that the Fed is so considerate and they are right to be concerned. Brazilian Real, Russian Ruble, Indian Rupee and Chinese Yuan have weakened against 52.4%, 8.74%, 4.5% and 2.9% this year as of 22 September. The Chinese bull has lost steam and commodities prices have been falling. Australian Dollar and Canadian Dollar have lost 13.9% and 14.2% respectively against the USD in 2015. Market is saying the current scenario is like Asian crisis in 1998. The developed markets did not get too hurt in 1998 and they probably could survive “Asian Crisis 2015” just like they survived “Russian Ruble Collapse 2014”. Well, the Fed made it clear that rate hike is still on the agenda and the plan to starting increasing interest rate is delayed but not cancelled. Asian emerging markets have an extra month to deal with an even stronger US Dollar. The dynamics in Asia because of the currency movement have changed signifi cantly in the past year. Japan has been a quiet winner with a much weaker currency and it manages to be a lot more competitive in exports. The weakening Japanese Yen has also turbo charged Japan tourism and property markets. Bloomberg report made a forecast of 4 million Chinese tourists to visit Japan in 2015. The Japan National Tourism Organization said 576,900 Chinese tourists visited Japan in July 2015. Hong Kong people are investing in Tokyo property which they fi nd more aff ordable than Hong Kong property. Japan manufacturing sector enjoys both weak Japanese Yen and low oil prices. There is a revival theme happening. Infl ation in Japan is 0.2% year on year in August and local people seems to be able to cope. Japan economy as refl ected by the GDP has contracted by 0.3% in Q2 2015 versus Q1 while Q1 was up 1.1% versus Q4 2014. China is working hard to develop service industry and domestic economy. It has said goodbye to the low cost labor export driven economy as many South East Asia countries are a lot more competitive in price. The recent stock market crash and Chinese Yuan devaluation may get a lot of worrying look from the West. But the inside story is a fair bit stronger. Most people in the West may struggle to name a China household brand although a lot of household appliances and gadgets are made
in China, including iPhones. Maybe a few people could name Huawei and Lenovo because of mobile handsets and computers. In China, local brands are doing well in the domestic market and that is a 1.3 billion people market. Consider Alibaba’s Taobao.com which is mainly targeting Chinese residents. As a brand, Taobao is nothing like Amazon but it has 350 million users versus Amazon’s 244 million users. Similarly, Facebook’s Whatsapp versus Tencent’s WeChat is 900 million users versus 600 million users. Due to Chinese language and regulations, the local brands and products have obvious advantages in the domestic market. The traditional brick and mortar business is even more localized with the exception of retails especially in fashion and luxury products. H&M, Zara and Uniqlo have big stores in prime locations. Hermes, Chanel, LV and many more brands are easier to fi nd than a HSBC branch. There are 25 Ferrari showrooms in China. Of course, there are also 1500 Starbucks in China. China economy is ok and still moving forward. On the contrary, the Chinese stock market has taken a step back as government and regulators are discouraging trading. The once most liquid stock and futures markets have gone into nuclear winter. Stock market turnover has dropped 70% from its peak and has totally lost its popularity as the benchmark index CSI 300 is 40% off its peak in June. The CSI300 futures used to trade over 2 million contracts a day and now at 30,000 level. Why? The exchange decides to charge retail investors 40% initial margin and practically limit retail investors to trade only 10 contracts a day. This shows the government is determined to tightly manage the stock and futures markets. If they fi nd it hard to manage, they limit the activities to a scale that they could manually manage.

INTERVIEW
Fine-Tuned Time How did the initial idea for this project come about? The concept behind the partnership with Gibson was to work in unison to create a very special timepiece inspired by the Gibson SG standard guitar. We are big fans of Gibson and very much respect and appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into its guitars. The synergies between Raymond Weil and Gibson were perfect; family-owned, independent & using quality craftsmanship skills and as a result the partnership was born. What was it about Gibson that drew you to collaborating as partners? The main reason for the collaboration was the international recognition that comes with Gibson, however after initial
Collaborations are big business in the watch industry, some don’t make a great deal of sense, but every so often, a partnership comes around that just works. Raymond Weil at the very heart of the company is and always has been deeply rooted in music, offering the perfect starting point for a collaborative project. Gibson is world renowned for producing high quality instruments and with the launch of their incredible self-tuning Gibson SG Standard guitar, the opportunity appeared too good to miss for the team at Raymond Weil. Elie Bernheim, CEO for Raymond Weil offers a little insight into the makings of a musical timepiece.

discussions about a potential partnership, we were invited to visit their factory in Nashville, which was truly inspirational. Every aspect of a Gibson guitar is made in-house and their team of craftsmen was one of the most happy and aspirational teams that we have ever seen. How was the Gibson SG Standard used to determine the design of the limited edition timepiece and what was Raymond Weil’s key objective during the project? The key with designing the special edition timepiece was for it to take subtle inspirations from the design of the Gibson SG Standard guitar. Initially, the idea was combine their selftuning guitar with our automatic self winding movement. We then began crafting diff erent ideas on which elements to take from the guitar and how to feature these on the timepiece. The fi nal design features fi ve key design features from the volume knobs through to the guitar strings embellishing the dial of the nabucco timepiece Why do you think the two brands and products were suited to a collaboration? Both brands are infl uenced by music and use this inspiration throughout its Brand. We have many diff erent types of music partnerships and sponsorships from Ambassadors to title timing partner status at the world’s best music venues. The attitude of both Gibson and Raymond Weil is very similar – we honor years of carefully handed manufacturing know-how to create quality products. Will this be a one-off partnership or are there plans for future projects together? Watch this space! What is your favourite feature from the guitar design? For me it is iconic shape of the stock-head of the Gibson guitar! Just look at who has played Gibson’s over the years – the most iconic musicians of all time. What would you like to see in production in the future from Gibson that you could see potential in a partnership? The response to the Raymond Weil and Gibson partnership has been fantastic with almost all of the product selling out within 1 month of entering stores. The Gibson brand has so many guitars that you can be inspired by, it wouldn’t be hard to see a phase two. Raymond Weil Nabucco in Steel and titanium, Special Edition Inspired by Gibson. The Collaborators by Ken Kessler
Collaborators Defying Resistance
Cynics: avert your eyes. We all know that whenever a watch brand supports an arts event, a charity, an ecological venture, the ultimate reward for the services rendered is publicity. But to write off such largesse as purely commercial is to ignore why the choice was made, the collaboration initiated and what its intended consequences actually may be. This has nothing to do with celebrity ambassadorships with no obvious reason or connection (e.g. Omega and George Clooney,
TAG Heuer and Cameron Diaz, Alpina and William Baldwin, Hublot and any willing hip-hopper, ad nauseam). Our definition of collaborations also has no relevance for straightforward commercial partnerships such as Hublot’s watches for Ferrari or Breitling’s models for Bentley. We should give a pass to those star athlete ambassadorships, because they usually involve sport watches relevant to the celebrity’s activity, such as Nadal hammering the hell out of a Richard Mille during matches. If one is passionate about sport, one must not be sceptical about every Formula One Team, football team and America’s Cup crew that has a watch sponsor: the brands are demonstrating sporting prowess, especially companies such as Hublot, TAG Heuer, Rolex, Audemars Piguet and others that can justify the connections on technical merit. Still, that’s not quite what we mean about spreading the love. Instead, the alliances under this microscope are less blatantly a quest for that sprinkling of stardust. It’s a pity that the doubters cannot meet face-to-face with some of the CEOs whose brands support assorted “good causes”. IWC is one of the most fervent, as described in last month’s issue concerning its involvement with the British Film Institute.
24
FEATURE But talk to IWC’s Georges Kern about the company’s participation in the Sainte Exupéry Youth Foundation, represented by a special line of pilots’ watches, or how its diving watches benefit a number of environmental research projects affecting the seas, and his enthusiasm is just as boundless, his knowledge as deep. Like most other company heads, when asked about such ventures, Kern told this writer, on more than one occasion, that it is a way of giving something back. In the manner of IWC’s diving models and their work with marine concerns, Omega’s Planet Ocean watches, though better known as the choice of James Bond on screen, support ocean sustainability through a partnership with the GoodPlanet Foundation. Blancpain, which helped to create the modern diving watch with its Fifty Fathoms, is promoting a pilot project of raising ocean awareness in China. The brand is collaborating with the Publicity and Education Centre of the State Administration to establish the first public ocean library at Huafeng Primary School in Shenhu Town in the city of Jinjiang, Fujian province. Staying on the water, Panerai’s Angelo Bonati is a passionate yachtsman, irrespective of his role at the helm of one of the only brands that makes nothing but diving watches. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s why he ended up at Panerai after his stint with Cartier. Bonati has applied Panerai’s water-resistant prowess to the sponsorship of an annual vintage yacht regatta series, one the side-effects being the restoration of an historically important craft. While that may seem less important than, say, helping to build schools in Africa, his brand has also supported polar expeditions, research in astronomy and other ventures with the emphasis on science.
Ever desperate for public funding, the arts are often recipients of watchmaker generosity. Parmigiani Fleurier, in no small part because of the event’s pure Swiss-ness, has long supported the Montreux Jazz Festival. Lest the cynics feel that this is no less commercial than some beer brand sponsoring a rock concert, note that the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation has benefitted from the association with Parmigiani, the Foundation’s activities including the mentoring of young musicians. This is purely in keeping with the traditions of the Festival’s founder – the late, sorely missed Claude Nobs – who discovered, among others, Roberta Flack. But Parmigiani also supports other ventures, most recently honouring women of achievement, an activity of which feminists should take note. It goes on and on. Vacheron Constantin, through its “Métiers d’Art” ventures has encouraged crafts persons in a number of skills. Cartier has its own foundation supporting contemporary art. Chopard supports the Kimberley Process and the World Diamond Council, two organisations working to eliminate conflict diamonds from industry supply chains. Rolex is involved in so many humanitarian ventures of its own that one’s respect for the brand cannot be denied. One might even suspect that any brand not seen to perform charitable acts suffers some shame. And, yes, most of the ventures result in limited edition watch models related to the causes, but the brands are diligent in donating portions of the revenue to the respective project. And I must admit, it feels kinda nice knowing that your pilot watch also paid for books for a student in Africa, or that your diving watch saved a stretch of coral. So cynics: be silent. And remember that the Red Cross started in Switzerland.

The Regent Beau Brummell Tourbillon Pocket Watch
Beau lived in a time where telling the time involved more than just a mere glance at the wrist – it was almost a ceremonial occasion in itself, slowly drawing a timepiece from the depths of his waistcoat pocket before
Revisit the simple enjoyment of old-world timekeeping with Backes & Strauss, the world’s oldest diamond company’s latest innovation – the Regent Beau Brummell Tourbillon Pocket Watch. Boasting a white gold case set with two rows of Baguette diamonds, and further rows of Baguette diamonds being set concentrically on the dial, the hand wound tourbillon movement features hours and minutes, as well as a date display and moon phase indication. Just fi ve pieces will be made, each with a bespoke chain set with Ideal Cut diamonds. But who was Beau Brummell’? For a start, his real name was George Bryan Brummell, and he was born in 1778 in London, the son of the future Lord North, the High Sherriff of Berkshire.

cradling it in his palm and perusing the hour at length. It was at Eton that Brummell began to display a penchant for dandy dressing, where his daring decision to 2 perk-up the regulation college cravat with the addition of a gleaming gold buckle won him the instant respect of his peers, whose admiration turned to adoration in the face of his quick wit and repartee. His reputation grew during a brief spell as an undergraduate at Oriel college, Oxford, to the point that he was presented to the Prince Regent who was so enchanted that he gave the 16-yearold Brummell a regimental commission in his regiment, the 10th Royal Hussars - which, with its array of elaborate uniforms designed for diff erent occasions and famously indulgent mess behaviour, could almost have been formed with him in mind. By the age of 24, Brummell - with considerable infl uence from the Prince - had reached the rank of Captain, but resigned his commission on hearing that he was to be posted to Manchester, a city he considered lacking in culture and sophistication. Soon afterwards, however, he inherited a useful fortune of around £30,000 which enabled him to live stylishly in a Mayfair apartment where he claimed to spend fi ve hours a day simply getting dressed in his understated, yet exquisitely fi tted, uniform of dark coat, full length trousers and elaborate cravat - a look which is said to have been the precursor to the modern suit and tie. The Prince became fi xated by Brummell’s attitude to dress, his meticulous attention to bathing and shaving and his resulting immaculate appearance. And, when he began to imitate it, the Brummell style’ was quickly picked-up by other members of high society.
Audemars Piguet has had a long and uninterrupted history of creating exceptional perpetual calendar watches that goes back to the company’s origins over 140 years ago. One of the earliest perpetual calendar watches that is part of the Audemars Piguet museum was made even before the company was even established. Jules Louis Audemars’ school watch was completed in its fi rst incarnation prior to 1875, and transformed in the workshops over the following two decades. The complicated 18-carat pink gold pocket-watch masterpiece combined a perpetual calendar with a quarter repeating mechanism, and included the rarely seen independent deadbeat second function. During the 1910s and 1920s, Audemars Piguet began to produce stylised perpetual calendar pocket-watches unlike any other on the market. As the 20th century progressed, the very fi rst wristwatches with perpetual calendar emerged. While these were exceptional, they all lacked the defi ning element of the perpetual calendar pocket watches that preceded them – the leap year indication. In 1955, Audemars Piguet began production on the very fi rst series of perpetual calendar wristwatches in the world to feature the essential leap year indication. A total of only 9 examples of this elusive model were created but in the late 1970s, the Quartz Crisis hit critical mass and buried many traditional watch fi rms while requiring others to greatly adapt their entire way of manufacturing and marketing timepieces. Audemars Piguet was one of the only traditional high-end Swiss watchmakers that not only continued to produce mechanical masterpieces throughout the Quartz Era, but also continued to innovate.

WATCHES
The thinner the movement, the more complex it is to adjust and assemble its parts as it requires extraordinary skills to work on components which are sometimes as thin as a human hair. However all fi nishing operations are performed by hand in accordance with the highest standards of Haute Horlogerie. A powerful combination of modern aesthetics and prestigious traditional complication, the new 2015 Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar is the latest chapter of this incredible journey which began 140 years ago. www.audemarspiguet.com
Elton John Music is Love for Lalique One of the greatest horological innovations of the late 1970s was Audemars Piguet’s 1978 release of the world’s thinnest selfwinding perpetual calendar wristwatch. Conceived in secret, the groundbreaking perpetual calendar wristwatch achieved its extra thinness (3.95 mm) by adapting the exceptional calibre 2120 movement which was launched in 1967. This new perpetual calendar calibre was central in attaining stability for Audemars Piguet during the Quartz Crisis, but also in ushering a new era of growth as it proved to be massively successful. Only a couple of brands were off ering perpetual calendar wristwatches at the time and following the success of the new models, Audemars Piguet proceeded to revive and reinvent many other classic complications in years that followed. During the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, Audemars Piguet introduced a wide variety of perpetual calendar watches with varying design codes, ranging from the Royal Oak and the Royal Oak Off shore, to the Jules Audemars and the Tradition. In 2015 the Royal Oak Perpetual calendar returns to centre stage with 4 diff erent versions -2 in steel, 2 in pink gold. Continuing the shift in watch case size that began in 2012, the new Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar is now 41 mm, yet still extremely thin. The enlarged size has resulted in a “Grande Tapisserie” dial design that greatly increases the overall aesthetics, balance and legibility of the perpetual calendar indications. The layout of the dial includes all of the traditional indications of a perpetual calendar watch: day, date, highly detailed astronomical moon, month and leap year. In addition, the 52 weeks of the year are indicated by an outer chapter ring with corresponding central hand, adding another layer of time measurement. The new automatic caliber 5134 is based on its predecessor, calibre 2120, however it has been enlarged in accordance with the updated 41mm case size. The highly fi nished 4.31 mm thick movement is fully visible through the glare-proof sapphire crystal caseback.

Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah

Buzz words. Every modern object one might want from cars to chairs require these annotations as if they were the by-line to a movie poster. Given the amount of time expended on reviews & comparisons, it would seem half the time the product is chosen due to how cleverly the buzz has been generated as opposed to its actual value. The modern watch industry is not immune from this sensationalism but to survive is to keep up with the times. However, the fact that the basics of mechanical watchmaking hasn’t changed in two hundred or so years, it is one industry where despite mechanical & technological evolution; a certain functionality must remain beyond any trend. A point in case is the Reverso Duo from Jaeger LeCoultre, a grand old Maison in watchmaking terms who laid the foundation for many other brands besides their own. The Reverso is a model that has stayed the course over its seventy five year history. Originally designed for the polo playing colonialists in India, the often plain steel reverse face soon gained a dial of its own once the watch caught on and graduated from horseback to a genuine fashion statement. From functionality to form. The reason I chose to highlight this model is for the fact that in their current collection, it is somewhat of a throwback with its smaller dimensions and engraved dials. Housing the hand wound Jaeger LeCoultre built calibre 854 1 offering two days worth of power reserve, it has height of 42.2mm with a width of just 26mm. It is within this slightly more refined structure where the real genius is delivered. The immediately visible face carries a matt silver finish with hand engraved elements in the centre track and within the seconds sub dial. The reverse face offers the functionality to create a second timezone with the hour hand moving exclusively of the silver dial. A twenty four hour sub dial with day and night indication ensures the second time is read with clarity. 020 7487 5628 | newcavendishjewellers.com New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF
Functionality is again nothing without the sheer beauty of the anthracite grey dial with hob nail effect finish. The sober silver dial is the perfect day watch while the darker reverse dial is an ideal evening foil, elegantly engraved and detailed without being too fussy or over complicated. Two watches in one with the added timezone complication all in a case size that oozes demure elegance. Let alone the other collections from Jaeger LeCoultre, the Reverso family carries a variety of models and complications that could cater to virtually every taste. Whilst some models have been discontinued over the years as fashions have changed, the Reverso Duo has survived the cull for the same reason we apply the word classic to any medium; it stands the test of time. The art deco form continues to quietly retain a strong following while the perfectly clever and subtle complication adds to the remarkable functionality of this beautiful timepiece. Please feel free to visit the store and view the Reverso Duo alongside many more models from the Jaeger LeCoultre collection.

Gaziano & Girling The new face of the British luxury shoe industry
Britain has always been at the forefront of high quality leather shoe production, but you don’t hear of many companies starting out in the industry. Most of the names you hear carry with them over one hundred years of history in the business, lending themselves to devoted followers and a stable reputation that is hard to refute. However, there is one company that has broken through the mould and is revolutionising an industry which has remained relatively still for some time. Tony Gaziano and Dean Girling did not just decide one day that they would start a shoe company from scratch. Both worked for many years with a variety of bespoke makers, designers and manufacturers before putting their heads together in creating Gaziano & Girling. Their desire and ideas led them to open the first shoe factory in over 100 years, but it can’t have been easy. We caught up with the pair to find out a little bit more on how they managed and where the brand is moving now. With the launch of a new in-house Patina Service, it is exciting times. How hard was it to establish a luxury shoe company in 2006, many years after the majority of other brands we all know? It was hard work to the point of almost being impossible, in fact many in the industry pretty much laughed at us for even trying. Dean and I were nervous, and really had to trust our own skills and good friendships to get us through. We came up against constant barriers such as finding the right skilled workers to train, looking for the correct machinery, most of which came from the 1940-50’s era and had to go through severe re-conditioning. We had to win suppliers trust as well, don’t forget for the last 100 years the same factory’s have been in Northamptonshire, we have been the only newcomers, and we were greeted with a mix of curiosity, jealousy, and mistrust, all of which we have overcome. Where do you believe you now sit in the industry and why do you think this is the case? We have transformed the UK shoe industry, even influenced those that are much higher in volume than us to upgrade their own quality and sex up their style selection. In terms of quality we are undoubtedly at the pinnacle of the industry, we built our product on the flaws of others and were able to do so because of our low volume. While our competitors had 100+ years’ history to market them, we had to use our quality to market ourselves. Our style is the perfect balance of traditional and contemporary - British and European, we hit a perfect balance, which is a rare skill that most designers cannot see. Taking all of this into consideration we very much do believe Gaziano & Girling is literally sitting at the top of the pile.
33
‘Gaziano & Girling is literally sitting at the top of the pile.’ Why have you decided to introduce the new in-house Patina Service, was it a natural progression? Patina gives our creations a 4th dimension, brings the product to life even more, turning a shoe into a work of art. The service gives the customer even more personalisation, and we are the fi rst and only British shoemaker to off er such a service. I think it was a natural progression for us, but not one you simply choose to have, again, highly skilled patina artists need to be brought into the company and others trained in the art, this takes time and planning. In what way will this service improve the customer experience and what will it mean for brand? Variety and personalisation. Many customers have a favourite style, patina will extend the look and colourways and they can have this style made. Also most patina has always been done of contemporary style shoes, not on the classics, the combination of patina and classic style can be very unique if done correctly. Can you explain the process of the service and will customers be able to use it on any of the shoe designs you offer? Basically the shoe is made in an off white leather, with no fi nish, almost a raw skin. The dye’s used for the coloration need to penetrate deep into the leather so that the colour is stable and does not move when the customers polish the shoes. The fi rst thing to do is apply the base colour, a very light shade, almost a pastel shade of the fi nished colour. Then more layers are added after the fi rst has dried, each layer giving a more translucent eff ect, they must be applied in a particular way so as not to look streaky. The fi nishing layers can then be applied, and a particular type of shading which can be specifi ed by the customer, darker in some areas and lighter in others, multiple colours can be used to enhance even more. Finally once complete, the shoes are fi nished off with extensive hand polishing, building up layers of wax give the toes and heels an almost coloured glass eff ect. What kind of response are you expecting following the launch, other than a positive one. Are you preparing for one off orders or individuals looking to create personal collections? Customers are already demanding patina and many diff erent ways, we have a good way to go because it is unusual for an English company to off er this, but those who have experienced this are addicted and we are lucky to have two of the best patina artists in the world. We will be able to off er one off s and for the individuals looking for personal collections, the choice is limitless, just needs a little imagination. gazianogirling.com

Darphin Spa Illuminata Mayfair Located in the heart of Mayfair, Spa Illuminata is a wonder to behold. The luxury day spa exudes elegance and boasts a calming Roman and Greek inspired interior that instantly transports you to a more peaceful mindset. Cool marbled floors and winding staircases leading to tranquil treatment rooms showcase just how well the space has been used in this central haven that’s a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the capital. Offering an array of treatments and packages from Germaine De Capuccini, Environ and Morocan Oil, one of the spa’s more recent additions has been the Parisian sensorial skincare brand Darphin. Not only a massive coup for Spa Illuminata, the treatment menu also marks the brand’s first flagship spa in Central London. With history dating back to 1958, when Pierre Darphin, a French specialist in cosmetology first launched an innovative research program that utilised the finest plant extracts, botanical aromas, and active skin treatments to develop a breakthrough beauty concept and unique customised skincare range, Darphin is one of the world’s leading brands and offers a range of serums, essential oils and creams that can be used in any combination. Recommended by beauty therapists, estheticians and
pharmacists, Darphin is such a pleasure to use thanks to the experience The Darphin treatment portfolio at Spa Illuminata features both body treatments, from refining polishes to signature massages, and targeted face experiences ranging from express, to essential and expert. We were kindly invited down to the Spa to try out one of the treatments for ourselves. Because each of the Darphin treatments are highly tailored to each individual’s skin you may walk in thinking you would like one treatment but end up being prescribed something a little different that not only targets your concerns but also prevents any others that only a specialist eye can see from forming. Darphin prescribes regimes of serums, essential oils and creams that work in any combination, creating personal rituals that fit skin needs and address overall wellbeing. The reason why it’s such a sensorial experience is due to the uplifting and often very calming botanicals, essential oils and careful attention paid to texture during the formulation process. Due to a lack of sleep and unsightly breakouts, we went for the

Stop Shine Purifying Facial a deep cleansing treatment that deeply purifies and detoxifies oily combination skin by refining the pores to leave the complexion feeling refreshed and looking clean and bright. You can always tell during a spa treatment when the therapist really believes in a product or brand, and this shone through while discussing Darphin. Not just a joy to experience as a client thanks to the wonderful scents and truly relaxing head and shoulder massage techniques so much so I fell asleep -, but the textures of Darphin are as lovely to experience as they are to apply. Serums and eye creams are cooling and smooth, while exfoliation grains are small and hardworking without scratching. Pierre Darphin’s believed that “you can’t look good if you don’t feel good” and this philosophy remains at the core of the brand’s mission and you can really get a sense of this from the treatments, we can’t wait to head back to try another! Floating out up the calming grey marbled stairs and into the Spa’s reception area, this is one of the few treatments that left no oily shine from the anti-aging creams and serums applied instead refreshed and radiant skin with true peace of mind as the sensual botanical oils lingered on the skin staying with you as you step back out into the busy hub of Mayfair. Whether you are new to the brand or are in love with their products, then there really is no better excuse to head over and take advantage of this new central location.
Already a cult favourite from the brand, the iconic 8-Flower Nectar Essential Oil Elixir has been a classic since 2007 transforming the way women care for their skin. Historic, Maritime Charm DoubleTree By Hilton London Docklands Riverside Situated in the heart of the Docklands area, once the busiest and biggest port in the world, the DoubleTree by Hilton London Docklands Riverside has been a long anticipated opening after an extensive multi-million pound refurbishment earlier this year.
Boasting a prime riverside spot looking out across financial district hub Canary Wharf and beyond, the 379-room hotel is home to London’s only dry dock and private pier with exclusive river ferry service. The area’s rich maritime history is evident in the careful redesign of the three buildings, one of which is the Grade I-listed Columbia Wharf which dates back to the 17th century, and can be first seen upon arrival to the hotel through the vintage sepia-toned shipping map in the reception.
A world away from the noise of the City, and even substantially quieter than nearby Canary Wharf - anyone who has stayed in a hotel over that side will tell you that the street noise and sirens are still very much prevalent when trying to get a good night’s sleep transport yourself into modern maritime London through a colour palette of stormy blues, sunshine yellows and mysterious greys. Modern rooms, that are reminiscent of cool Brooklyn, New York studios, offer views of the London skyline or balcony floor to ceiling views of the river and Canary Wharf. It’s surprising

Af ternoon Tea with a Royal Twist Already a hidden charm within the historic Hotel Caf Royal, the iconic Oscar Wilde Bar is now celebrating great British history with a playful London Royal Tea. Allowing visitors to learn about the origins of taking tea and the many traditions associated with it, The London Royal Tea is a beautifully elegant affair with the team of chefs at Hotel Caf Royal carefully creating a menu of unique sandwiches, scones, delicacies, cakes and savouries, all inspired by London and afternoon tea through the ages. Thoughtful and highly skilled delights include the traditional Battenberg cake, supposedly created to celebrate the royal wedding of 1884 between Prince Louis of Battenberg and Queen Victoria’s granddaughter; a pearly Victoria Sponge; and macaroons, inspired by the icon of the London Underground. A theatrical event in itself, the tea experience begins when Hotel Caf Royal’s designated toastmaster rings a bell from the historical entrance on Regent Street, to signal the beginning and end of afternoon tea service. Dating back to the 1800s, this tradition evokes the spirit of the muffin men, who used to hawk their wares on the streets of London and ring a bell when the muffins were ready, until a law was passed prohibiting the activity in 1839 - a law that still stands today. Once the service has begun, guests are escorted into the lavish and truly decadent Oscar Wilde Bar, complete with gilded walls, mirrors and plump red velvet seating, where they will enjoy a brief history of the traditions surrounding afternoon tea in the UK and a piece of news from Café Royal’s legendary past, to celebrate the incredible legacy of this London landmark. It is after this that diners can enjoy delicious spread beginning with a Savoury muffin with Goats cheese and tomato, before a selection of traditional tea sandwiches with a twist including: Cucumber, cream cheese and beetroot; Prawn brigade with spices and London honey; and Smoked Wilde salmon, quail’s egg and cress. What’s even better is that all sandwiches are refillable meaning you can sample your favourites again!
Guests are then encouraged to try the hibiscus ice tea to clean their palate together with a vanilla biscuit before moving onto the sweet dishes on offer, including Traditional Battenberg cake, Underground macaroon, Pearly King and Queen Opera and Victoria sponge plus Raspberry Regent, a sweet treat that has been specially created by the hotel for this service, inspired by the iconic Dome Penthouse. No afternoon tea would be complete without Hotel Café Royal’s golden raisin and plain scones with clotted cream and Baylands strawberry preserve, served alongside a selection of cakes including Lemon drizzle; Hazelnut tin; and Traditional fruit cake. A choice of custom-blended teas from the Canton Tea company are on offer, as well as a range of Champagnes. Priced at £42 per person, The London Royal Tea is available daily from midday until 5pm (last order). The Champagne London Royal Tea is offered at £55 per person. For reservations please contact the team directly on 020 7406 3310 or via email restaurants@hotelcaferoyal.com. For further information please visit www.hotelcaferoyal.com.

Wright Brothers South Kensington If you are a lover of fine, fresh seafood and you haven’t heard of the Wright Brothers before now, then you will certainly be interested in their latest opening in South Kensington. With locations already in Soho and Borough Market, this latest addition is in keeping of this house style and influenced by the timeless bistros of Paris, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere as soon as you step through the front door. Experienced Head Chef, Philip Coulter has created a menu bursting full of great British food with a subtle French influence. Oysters and other fresh seafood are supplied from Wright Brothers own Duchy of Cornwall Oyster Farm, which is a private fishery situated on the Helford River. Supplies also come from other regions of the British Isles, France and Canada. In 2002 brother and brother- in-law Ben and Robin decided on a change of career and started bringing oysters back to popularity in the UK and after a lot of hard work on their part, their farm now supplies a range of high quality sustainable oyster, fish and seafood to 140 of the City’s finest restaurants. Their Duchy Natives are one of two varieties that are cultivated on the farm and are a must try. Served with red wine vinegar and chopped shallots, these flat oysters are an excellent choice and even if you have never experienced oysters before, you should at least have a go at this because you can taste the freshness and the quality as soon as you pop them into your mouth making them an impressive experience for first timers. As you would expect, the menu features a selection of oysters natural, dressed or cooked including Frenchman’s Creek - the other variety of oyster cultivated on the farm. However, don’t miss out on other tempting delights offered on the specials of the day chalk board. On our visit, the celeriac and oyster soup was out of this world as well as the salt cod croquettes, which were exquisitely light in texture and melt in the mouth. These delicious starters set your taste buds up and leave your mouth watering ready for the main course.
The whole lemon sole topped with a fresh crab and cucumber is a work of art in itself. The presentation and quality is excellent and the taste is absolutely superb with exactly the right amount of seasoning. The subtle way in which it is cooked adds to the freshness. Fresh half lobster is also on offer and all this is complimented by your choice of sides. When you think they can’t impress you any more, out comes their chocolate mousse with its crunchy pecan topping and the passion fruit jelly with lime cream. When you look at the dessert menu you will see that there is a recommended dessert wine specially selected to go with each choice. With their ethos being ‘sea to plate’ this restaurant is a must for true lovers of anything that comes from the ocean. The new location also features the Wright Bothers’ first ever independent cocktail and oyster bar, The Mermaid, where cocktails and wine can be enjoyed with a selection of oysters, snacks or a full a la carte menu. Located in the basement and beautifully refurbished, oyster lovers can visit every Wednesday to Saturday between 5pm to 6pm and 10pm to 11pm to enjoy Oyster Hour with oysters available for only £1.

Salvatore’s tails
with Salvatore Calabrese
Salvatore Calabrese - famously known as The Maestro - is one of the world’s top bartenders. He made a name for himself sourcing and mixing ‘Liquid History’, vintage spirits dating back to 1770.
In Asia recently I learned that my judgement of what is sweet’ was very diff erent to my hosts’ and it forced me to revisit what I thought were tried and tested cocktail recipes to make them tasty to the group. The realisation didn’t stop there: later our conversation tuned to smells, and it became apparent that what smells nice to one culture can be an aromatic turn-off to another. I mention all this as my bar team at Salvatore at Playboy Club, London have recently been constructing a new cocktail collection based on region-specifi c ingredients and featuring fl avours that are culturally resonant with that country’s palate predilections. Counting 16 new drinks in all, the menu takes guests from Asia to America by way of Europe and Africa, looking to the palates of everywhere from Guatemala to Siberia for inspiration. To take two, why not drop by for a Nazca, a delicate and fl oral drink inspired by Lima, Peru. It’s similar to a Pisco Sour, but boasting the fl avours of the Tamarillo, a tropical fruit that tastes like something between a green tomato and a passion fruit, mixed with the local brandy. Closer to home there’s the Tartan, a long and refreshing whisky drink, made by combining two diff erent whiskies at opposite ends of the taste spectrum, with notes of honey, heather and lavender. While it may be off -putting to people who don’t like whisky, it’s actually aimed at exactly that drinker, to introduce them to the tastes and palate of Scotland. We mix 40ml Haig Club Single Grain Whisky (yes, that’s David Beckham’s whisky) with 10ml of Talisker Single Malt Scotch, 15ml Drambuie, 10ml Honey Syrup, 25ml Lemon Juice and a dash of Dandelion Bitters, topped with homemade heather and lavender soda. Day trips from Mayfair to distant lands, departing daily! Salute!
Travel broadens the mind, but it also broadens the palate. As someone who travels regularly (four countries last month, fi ve the one before) on a kind of global food and drinks circuit, it’s ever more obvious that there are not only profound diff erences in the things we put on our plates and in our glasses, but in the way our senses seem tuned diff erently, to like some things at the expense of others. What I mean to say is that something is not just good to taste because it simply refl ects a food, say, that comes from a particular region, but because a dish is also constructed with that country’s collective palate in mind. To take an obvious example, the quarter of the world’s population used to chilli in their food on a daily basis can fi nd diets that don’t include it extremely bland. It’s the same with garlic too. And the same too if you grow up eating salty fi sh in Northern Europe, eating fresh Durian, spreading Marmite on your toast, or luxuriating on foie gras: it’s clear that your palate will have its own ‘neutral’ point between sweetness, sourness, bitterness and saltiness.

STK
Popular US steak house STK has been thriving in London for almost three years now and is still a much loved-favourite of celebrities and steak lovers alike. Located in the iconic, former BBC Marconi House, now the stunning, contemporary hotel ME London, STK is perfectly located for an evening full of fun, steak and cocktails. Priding itself on being ‘not your daddy’s steak house’, the lavish, intriguing interior is the fi rst to tell you that you’re in for a good time. Moodily lit with glitzy touches from the glittering chandeliers to the sleek ‘island’ bar and large lounge area, this is the place to be if you want to bring the club to you after your meal especially at the weekend when we are told the DJ turns up the music and guests dance the night away sipping on signature cocktails. Sizzling atmosphere aside, STK is foremost a restaurant and as they say ‘Don’t take our word for it though. Take a bite of our juicy, tender USDA Prime steak and judge for yourself ’ and in keeping with the interior it’s a enjoyably decadent one at that. Starters include smoked beef Carpaccio and fun prawns krispies with shellfi sh bisque and coriander, but there is only one winner in the list of appetisers and that is the lil’ BRGs. Delicately made with Wagyu beef, these American style treats come with tomato, a slice of gherkin and special sauce in a fresh sesame seed bun. Possibly a little large for a starter, but then again, why else do you go to a steakhouse. Maintaining the American way has been a fundamental part of this move to the UK, however, STK London have not completely disregarded the idea of British Beef, and as a result, a select few cuts will be found on the adaptable menu. However, with a number of locations in the States, the appeal of the extensive list of American cuts on off er is strong, ranging from smaller steaks for those not so keen on indulging their inner carnivore and female friendly sizes, to the simply outrageous cuts large enough to feed the table. Although considering its name, the restaurant also and perhaps surprisingly boasts quite a diverse
‘mains’ menu with other dishes including Coconut fried Halibut; Roast Veal; and Glazed Chilean Sea Bass. It is this theme of inclusion that is unusual for a traditional steakhouse that The One Group, owners of the STK brand have been careful to push, including everyone in their exciting dining experience. Not only are smaller steaks provided, but the uncompromisingly delicate additions on off er such as an array of salads, saut ed greens and heirloom tomato salad are perfect accompaniments for lighter options. Of course, it wouldn’t be an American Steakhouse if there wasn’t an abundance of Mac & Cheese on off er, and STK are more than willing to oblige. The incredibly cheesy dish is both comforting and creamy while maintaining a surprising level of edibility, although I would suggest sharing unless you skipped lunch. A number of inviting side dishes are available from the menu including parmesan tru e fries as well as an impressive steak topping list which includes thick cut bacon, black tru e, stilton and lobster. If you can, try and save some space for dessert, as they have also produced an extensive fi nal fl ourish with dishes such as STK Snickers, and the huge fairground attraction complete with apple jam doughnuts, salted caramel popcorn, toff ee apples, chocolate malt and candy fl oss. This October, STK London will launch its fi rst Champagne Brunch Party in association with Laurent Perrier and Coco de Mer. On Saturday 3rd, 17th and 31st October the restaurant will come alive from 12.00pm to 6.00pm as the lights dim, the music turns up and the entertainment begins. The new brunch menu includes classic American brunch dishes with an STK twist such as green eggs and ham, pancake stack with maple syrup, streaky bacon and whipped butter, and steak, egg and chips. Three platters are also available and to get the party started the Champagne will be fl owing between 12.00pm and 2.00pm with bottomless Laurent Perrier Brut off ered for £30 per guest. Five special Brunch cocktails will also be on off er.

A New Dawn for Rolls-Royce
REVIEW
Audi RS3 Audi’s RS team have done it again. Pulling out all the stops to create a high performance sports car in the guise of a family hatchback. Not only lightning fast, but big enough for a golf weekend too.
The phrase ‘hot hatch’ has taken on a whole new meaning over recent years, with automotive technology pushing the limits of possibility to a point where we now find cars from the premium hatchback market knocking on the door of the outright sports car one. And Audi’s latest RS 3 is no exception. Offering an entry level’ into the RS range, this car is not for the faint of heart. Although providing the same usability of any other engine option in the A3 Sportback range, this is by no means a standard vehicle, nor should it be treated as such, whether you are behind the wheel
or otherwise. Taking just 4.3 seconds to propel you from standing to 62mph - just 0.1 seconds slower than the current M6 - this is built for one reason, and one reason alone. Despite the practicality of having four doors, a sizable boot, luxury leather seating and a relatively standard interior with all of the necessary info-sat-nav-dab-tainment system, it may as well be a carbon shell with plastic in place of the windows, as this is a car that wants to race...all of the time. As hard as you try to restrain your right foot at the lights, there will never be a time that the
70
FEATURE car behind or next to you will be anything but a small dot after approximately three seconds. It is not out of an innate desire to drive fast, it is simply because this car has been born and raised to deliver the most effective use of the power it has been given. Driven by a 2.5-litre TFSI Quattro unit, there is plenty of power on offer. A whopping 367PS to be precise, and when paired with a substantial torque figure of 465Nm at just 1600rpm, the recipe is a potent one. Thanks to this low-rev torque, the acceleration is fierce and relentless, taking you through to a governed 155mph with relative ease, and there is no way to tame it. Regardless of if you choose to cruise around town in standard drive, the second you press slightly too hard on the accelerator - by which I mean, when you press on the accelerator - the car will instantly decide that you require a lower gear, shift down and punch you and whoever else is fortunate enough for the ride forward at an alarming rate until you decide or manage to remove your foot from the pedal. A little more fortunate is that to compensate for the incredible power and pace, Audi have kindly fitted the largest brakes physically possible in the front wheel setup. So you can stop just as quickly as you start, just make sure your passengers are aware of this before they create some embossed patterns on the dashboard. On the face of it, you would expect that the RS 3 would offer an equally comfortable ride to the rest of the cars in the A3 model range. However, due to the level of engineering that has gone in to making this car as fast in both a straight line, and around corners as possible, the ride comfort has somewhat suffered. The suspension and steering is sharp and responsive, exactly what you require and expect on a car of this calibre, but even when you shift the dynamic suspension into comfort’, the ride remains stiff and poised, ready for action.
The ride is one of the main features that could be the deciding factor on whether you purchase this car or not. Its acceleration and thirst for speed are easily overcome with a little care and lightness of touch, but there is unfortunately nothing you can do to soften the impact of the corner-ready suspension at lower speeds. If you
are planning on using this car around town, it might be worth thinking again, but if this is a purchase for the open road and track days, you may have just come across the perfect machine. Cruising through the countryside, this car will soak up the corners with ease and power out with an aggressive poise. All the while remaining incredible composed thanks to the tried and tested quattro system and impressive amount of rubber to help.

REVIEW
Audi’s RS model line offers a selection of cars far beyond the realm of road driving and is reserved for those not only with the money to purchase one, but also the understanding of just what their new car is all about. We know that this is no city run-around, nor is it a comfortable grand touring machine, but what this car is designed for, it executes
in spectacular fashion. Push the touchscreen selector to ‘dynamic’ on the vehicle setup screen and the RS 3 transforms from a caged lion, to a full-bloodied king of the jungle. The engine tone growls as the gearbox selects the most suitable gear in which it can thrust itself forward at the fastest pace. The suspension receives further stiffening to a level unfathomable for most regular car users, and the whole feel of the vehicle becomes a much tighter and responsive package. All of this is to ensure that you can transport your car from A to B or indeed around a circuit as fast as possible and with every aspect of this car tuned to perform at an exceptional level, the possibilities are vast. Each and every part of Audi’s RS development has been put into action on this car, allowing it to do things that even a few years ago would have been considered impossible. As a result, this car is as quick as the 2012 release of the 4.2-litre V8 R8 off the line, which is a staggering stat considering the market position of the two cars. The R8 was developed as an outright sportscar to be a flagship to the RS arm of production vehicles, and has done its job exceptionally well, but now they have managed to put the same ‘sportscar package’ into what is essentially a small family car.

Of course, the functionality is somewhat diminished if you plan on using the full potential of the unit under the bonnet - you wouldn’t want your fruit and veg floating around in the substantial boot, or the dog for that matter. But regardless of this, the versatility is impressive to say the least, you know that you always have the option to take the family out for the weekend or take some time to yourself on the complex network of roads that surround London once you venture outside the M25. And can rest comfortable in the knowledge that it will be able to perform your every request, however sedate or chaotic. The dynamic suspension is a must if you are considering this car for both purposes, as the ride is just too stiff without and could still do with some massaging even with the ‘softening’ option. But we have all come to expect this from Audi’s sporting division, as they appear to only have one thing on their minds, and deliver it with expert precision. You will never get tired of having the ability to avoid potential incidents with the slightest press of the accelerator, although you may find yourself signing up to a yoga class or just straight-to-the-point physiotherapy to accommodate your new back shattering lifestyle.

New Dawn Getting to Gripz with a Concept From the pioneers of the crossover comes a new concept to push the boundaries of this growing market. Designed in Europe and Japan, the Nissan Gripz Concept takes a hint from the marque’s Nismo Juke project and launches it to a new level. Combining the ability and practicality of a compact crossover with the performance of a sports car, this concept demonstrates the brands future. Heading towards a world of efficient vehicles - thanks to their impressive hybrid technology - as well as focusing on both driver and pedestrian safety thanks to a built in ‘dashcam’ system, Nissan are clearly aiming to impress with their next generation crossover. This latest concept is inspired not by space travel or futuristic dreams, but the incredible Safari Rally-winning Nissan 240Z. Built in the 70’s to combat some of the harshest terrain on the planet, these sports cars were engineered to the fullest with increased ride height, toughened suspension and deep red-orange body colour... look familiar? Of course, automotive engineering has moved on somewhat from the 1970’s, so now we get to enjoy a vehicle which would not only offer an exhilarating ride through the desert on the weekend, but a comfortable commuter car that won’t break the bank when you come to fill up. The styling is a little different too, maybe they have looked to space travel and a few sci-fi films for some of it. Deliberately styled scaffolding’ creates the A-pillar offering a nod to the structural integrity and robustness of the car whilst sleek, stylish lines adorn the interior to provide a sense of modern luxury - not something one would have expected in a 1970 240Z. Now we just have to wait and see how much of it makes the forecourt.
1952 saw the world emerge from a period of economic austerity following protracted war. That year, the world looked forward in hope as the first passenger jet, the British deHavilland Comet, made its first commercial flight the Big Bang Theory of the creation of the Universe was first propounded, and Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne of the United Kingdom. That very same year, the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn drophead, which became the muse for the designers of the new Rolls-Royce Dawn, was finished by Rolls-Royce coachbuilders Park Ward and delivered to its first customer, Colonel W.A. Phillips in Canada. This famous and rare Rolls-Royce name was only ever applied to 28 very special drophead bodies between 1950 and 1954 and now lends itself to a new Dawn. One which exudes exclusivity, Dawn delivers a world first in super-luxury motoring a cool, contemporary interpretation of what a super-luxury four-seater convertible motor car should be in 2015 rare, refined and the most social super-luxury car there is. That is to say that four individuals can enjoy the experience together in uncompromised comfort. Boasting claims of being the quietest open top car ever made, Rolls-Royce have taken every measure to adhere to Sir Henry Royce’s belief and have clearly accepted nothing nearly right or good enough. This car will offer the super-luxury market something that is currently unobtainable and for that reason has become an instant success, but there will plenty of opportunity to judge once it hits the road...in undeniable style.
“The name ‘Dawn’ perfectly suggests the fresh opportunities that every new day holds an awakening, an opening up of one’s senses and a burst of sunshine. In its tentative, inchoate, anticipatory state, dawn is the world coming to light from the ethereal dark of the night. The early-day chill of dawn provides an erotic tingle on the skin, awakening the senses and passions as the day begins.” Torsten Mueller- etvoes, Chief E ecutive cer, olls- oyce Motor Cars

Making the Most of Your Mews
with Duncan Petrie Head of Sales at Savills Mews What makes London so special is its wealth of character and architecture, whether period or modern, at almost every turn. Although they mirror the architecture of surrounding period buildings, London mews have a distinct character of their own. They’re quiet residential havens often tucked away behind busy roads, dwarfed by the properties around them. In fact, I’m often told by clients that their mews house in London provides a far quieter night’s sleep than their house in the country! Mews houses are traditionally thought of as much smaller homes but some surprise with Tardis-like proportions. Particularly impressive are those that have been rebuilt or remodelled behind their original façade, allowing buyers and owners the advantage of living in a period property with all the mod-cons we have become accustomed to in the London property market. Many now have had basements dug which weren’t there 15 to 20 years ago, considerably increasing the available space and allowing more extensive possibilities to configure the remaining rooms upstairs. We are seeing an increasing number of mews houses that have been rebuilt behind their original façade, allowing developers the opportunity to incorporate a wealth of new features that would previously be difficult to find, such as the living wall in Elvaston Mews and the use of glass walls and floors to increase the natural light. This is a far greater
challenge than buying a plot of land and building from the ground up as the design must fit with the original fa ade, so it is often done by developers who benefit from more experience and expertise in such matters, rather than by domestic end users. It is worth the effort, nonetheless, to open out and brighten the space with carte blanche than to remodel existing rooms. These properties then offer the best of both worlds an attractive period appearance but open space and modern conveniences inside. We sold a property last year in Linden Mews in which the owners had built a glass box extension on the rear. Until you walked in, you would have no idea how bright it would be inside it made an incredibly striking impression. On the market now is a stunning house on Coleherne Mews that has been rebuilt with an added basement. This uses glass to great advantage, creating light, spacious rooms. The old brick façade has also been painted, presenting the house with a new contemporary style. We’ve also known owners of mews houses who have taken the opportunity to create a far greener, more energy-efficient home, increase the insulation to cut out noise from their neighbours, or create incredibly striking features of their garages with glass walls. With such endless opportunities, it leaves it fairly impossible to judge the modern mews house by its cover, but each is an intriguing discovery of endless proportions.

INTERNATIONAL PROPERTY
Overseas Buyers Put Balearics in Pole Position in Spanish Property Market Spanish property market recovery is being led by the Balearic Islands, with foreign buyers providing the catalyst both in Mallorca and Ibiza. The Spanish Infrastructure Authority announced that more than 40% of property purchases on the Islands in the second quarter of 2015 were made by overseas buyers. Figures from the Ministry of Development show that property transactions in the Balearics this year are up more than 30% over the same period in 2014, and increased by 13.9% versus the first three months of the year. Alejandra Vanoli, Managing Director of Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty, says “This is great news for the property market in the Balearics, and certainly reflects what we are seeing in Mallorca. The figures represent the second best quarter of growth in the past five years, and overseas buyers are a hugely important part of the picture. They drive along the local market both in resales and new properties, and overseas transactions have provided much more liquidity in property in recent years” Alejandra’s Ibiza counterpart, Glynn Evans, Managing Director of Ibiza Sotheby’s International Realty, adds, “There is no doubt that overseas buyers are driving the property market across Spain, and in particular in the Balearics. National Spanish
newspaper El Pais has highlighted Ibiza as an example of this and said that up to 50% of property buyers on the island are from overseas, which is indicative of our experience in the market. These are exciting times for property in the Balearics.” Statistics quoted in the German-language Mallorca Zeitung show that overseas buyers are attracted to the higher end of the property market, spending almost 30% more than the average purchase price on the Islands and no doubt determined to secure the best properties they can. However, British buyers are still the most numerous across Spain, making up more than 15% of the national market, with French, Russian, German and Belgian buyers increasing alongside. In the Balearics, German buyers were equally numerous as the British. These figures coincide with statistics showing that the number of travellers passing through the main Balearic international airports has hit a record high across the first eight months of 2015. Palma International Airport saw 2.1% more passengers than the same period last year, with Germany the most popular starting point, while Ibiza Airport increased passenger numbers by an incredible 8.7%. Additionally, the Balearic Ports Authority has announced a massive 20% year-on-year increase in cruise ship passengers coming into Palma during the first half of 2015.

Country Estate, Porreres, Mallorca This is the perfect property for a lover of the countryside, and the fact that it is 100% key ready is another huge advantage. The vast plot and olive, almond and orange groves mean that you can go for a lovely walk without having to leave your property at all and, although there are 360-degree views from the house, it is very private and secluded. Peace and quiet guaranteed.” Alejandra Vanoli, Managing Director Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty. Six Bedrooms | Six Bathrooms | Built area 537m² | Plot size 35,000m² | Price 3.8 million euros (approx £2.81 million)
Sea View Villa, Santa Eulalia, Ibiza I would buy this villa as it just ticks so many boxes. On an established gated community but positioned to feel like the only villa on the hillside, this property is also close to the only golf course in Ibiza, and a nearby beach just down the track. The property itself has some great design touches, a separate guest house to allow that extra bit of privacy when people come to stay, and a beautiful sea view.” Glynn Evans, Managing Director Ibiza Sotheby’s International Realty Six Bedrooms | Seven Bathrooms | Built Area 420m² | Plot Size 30,000m² | Price 3.6 million euros (approx £2.66 million)

Shedding Light on Your Garden with Kate Gould
Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer with more than a decade’s hands-on experience transforming gardens of all sizes and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where she has been awarded three Gold medals. If you would like to know more about our services please contact Kate at kategouldgardens.com
Lighting is an important consideration in a garden if you want to use it in the evenings. I am increasingly asked by my clients to incorporate lighting into their garden scheme especially in town gardens where the smaller spaces have to work extra hard and often through antisocial hours. In our opinion, LED lights are invaluable. They are both long lived and cost effective to run and work well as recessed lights in paving and decking where they can highlight steps and changes in level on or around the house. Used carefully they also work well to highlight pots and planters. Generally you need to think of these as feature lights they won’t give you enough light to dine out or entertain by but used in combination with other lights in the garden they help to create a pleasing picture. It is amazing how much it takes to highlight a plant or tree successfully. Up-lights i.e. those lights that are ground mounted are the best for highlighting plants. Yucca, Phormium, Dicksonia, Phyllostachys and Trachycarpus all look dramatic when up-lit at night. The light diffuses up the plant and softly away into the
night, which means that the light does not cast great halos into the dark sky. In town settings urban light pollution is a problem for migrating birds, bats and insects and so consideration has to be put to these things too, as well as to neighbouring properties. If you wish to dine by light outside then the kindest way of doing this is by candlelight. A soft and flickering glow around a table casts a warmer and more inviting light than artificial light and can always be combined with a Citronella scent to keep biting insects at bay. Tea lights in little holders make excellent marker points through a garden for special occasions and a good oldfashioned hurricane lamp is hard to beat. Money speaks volumes with garden lighting and paying for a good light fitting such as those made by Hunza, Collingwood or Aurora will return dividends in the longevity of their use. Inexpensive fittings can be more trouble than they are worth and in a garden setting where water and electricity have to mix I would always rather pay for peace of mind. kategouldgardens.com
