FROM THE EDITOR

Following another fantastic summer in the City, it all but appears to be over already, but there is still plenty to look forward to and hopefully a late surge of sun will ease the transition into Autumn. Now is the time to reminisce over an open fi re on lazy evenings in the late summer sun, remembering all the things you have achieved over the past few months. But it also gives you the opportunity to realise the things that you had been meaning to do but never got around to doing. There is no better time to grab the bull by the horns and jump into your summer’s ambitions because, before you know it, the great British summer will be gone and who knows when it will return. To start with, why not head over to the iconic West Coast of America for a trip to remember, taking in the sights of LA with an irresistible shop in Beverly Hills, fi nishing with a road trip to Las Vegas. The amount you can see and do in this vast area over a relatively short period is astounding and it will set you up for a lifetime of adventures, whether that’s returning to do it better or

picking out another part of the world. Those of us in the unfortunate position of being confi ned to staying in the UK this month will have to fi nd other ways of seeking out the light. A drive through the country with the wind in your hair may just be the perfect answer. You can clear your head and make sound plans for the future...or fi nd yourself having the most enjoyable time possible in an unsuspecting £20,000 car. You won’t fi nd a purer experience than that from a Caterham Seven. We get to grips with the new 270S to fi nd out just how usable it is and how much joy you can expect on your ‘little’ drive. September carries the scent of change in the air with London Fashion Week thrusting next year’s fashion features at us and the events world winding down in preparation for, dare-I-say-it, the Christmas party season. But it also off ers some rest-bite from the full-throttle lifestyle of a summer in London, so make the most of the freedom you can fi nd to catch up on a little you time, before the tides change, along with your wardrobe.

BFI National Archive

BFI National Archive BFI is a name we all know, but how many of us really understand the meaning of those three letters. BFI National Archive and Robin Baker, Head Curator help us unravel the mystery behind potentially the most thrilling story to never reach the big screen.

Most people are familiar with the BFI acronym, but not many people know the extent of the work of the BFI National Archive. How can you change the awareness? RB We have been hugely successful recently in reaching new audiences across the world. In 2012 we launched our restorations of Alfred Hitchcock’s nine surviving silent films at the Cultural Olympiad. These films have now shown in over 30 countries – from Cuba to China – to a global cinema audience of c250,000 people. In fact, 25,000 people watched Hitchcock’s final silent, Blackmail (1929), at a screening on Odessa’s famous Potemkin Steps in July 2014. We have just launched one of the biggest and most complex projects in our history - Britain on Film. For the last 3 years we have been busy digitising films from the BFI National Archive and partner archives. People from across the UK can now search an interactive map on the BFI Player and watch 2500 archive films shot in the places they know and love. We will be making 7500 more films available over the next 2 years. In the first month alone over 2 million people watched titles from Britain on film. This is an extraordinary result. And we’d never have guessed that our most viewed title to date would be a documentary about Milton Keynes made in 1973! What is the main objective of the BFI? We firmly believe that film plays a central role in the cultural and creative life of the UK. As the lead organisation for film in the UK we want to create a flourishing film environment which inspires creativity and innovation through connecting audiences to the widest choice of British and World cinema. We look after one of the world’s largest and most important collections of film and

television, ensuring its preservation for future generations while making it accessible for today’s audiences. We support film-makers in the UK through the Lottery Film Fund and we are committed to growing new generations of film-makers and audiences. We work with a wide range of partners to promote the future of film and its appreciation in the UK and world-wide. Why is the work that the BFI do so important? The BFI is a unique organisation which has no equivalent anywhere in the world. We support film culture and the film industry, which contributes significantly to the UK’s economy. In fact for every £1 spent on film it contributes £12.50 to the UK’s economy. The BFI play a vital role in every aspect of film from education and exhibition to supporting film production and distribution of British film through Lottery funding and the promotion of British film internationally. Without it we would not have the vision and resources to educate and support the next generation of film-makers and audiences. We are the custodians of the UK’s national collection of film and TV and preserve and restore this for future generations. We also have the world’s largest library of printed materials relating to film and television and an extraordinary range of special collections – from the papers of David Lean to the costume designs for The Red Shoes . We run the capital’s unique cultural venue BFI Southbank, the BFI London Film Festival and Sight & Sound magazine, release DVD’s and cinema releases and give a platform for films that wouldn’t be seen otherwise. How can the public support the work that you do? As a charity the BFI is able to accept donations from members of the general public and companies and organisations through our

11

website: www.bfi .org.uk. The BFI is dependent upon the generosity of individual donors – as well as trusts and foundations - to enable much of our work. Indeed, most of our fi lm restorations would not have been possible without this support. We are launching a new fundraising campaign Film Is Fragile in October so watch out for how to donate via our website. This year our fundraising gala LUMINOUS will have an online auction which launches on 21st September in which the public can bid for extraordinary fi lm items and experiences. We also have a membership scheme which off ers discounts and priority booking. For anyone who wants to off er a higher level of support we have a special Patrons scheme which off ers some interesting benefi ts. Anyone can buy tickets to our public screenings year round at BFI Southbank including the BFI London Film Festival. Even paying to watch a classic fi lm or a new release on BFI Player helps to support the work we do. What effect do projects like the limited edition timepiece from IWC have on public awareness and support and how can you maximise the potential of such projects? The support of companies like IWC is absolutely vital to our continued existence and we rely on the support of a wide range of sponsors and supporters. The limited edition timepiece is a highly charged reminder of the preciousness of our fi lm heritage and it will be a key item in the online auction for LUMINOUS, the BFI’s fundraising gala on 7th October 2015 which IWC is generously supporting. Is the future of the BFI secure or are further projects like the partnership with IWC essential to the organisation’s ’s longevity? . In addition to government support, funding for activities through the National Lottery and the income generated by our own commercial activity, we rely on support from our members, supporters and sponsors. In your opinion, what is the most influential piece of footage that can be found in the archives? RB We are currently digitising all the surviving fi lms were made in the UK between 1895 and 1901. Very few of these fi lms have been seen in the last 100+ years. Once we make these fi lms available it will transform preconceptions about life in the late Victorian period. Indeed, it will come as a revelation to most people that our Victorian forebears not only made fi lms – but that they did so with such creativity and innovation.

In a world where so much is freely available in the digital network, are there still historic pieces that are being found today which are securing a place in the archives? RB We regularly discover fi lms which have been considered lost. Over 80% of all fi lms made in Britain before 1929 no longer survive, so the rediscovery of early fi lms is particularly exciting. One of our most recent rediscoveries was a major British feature Love, Life and Laughter (1923) starring one of Britain’s most popular stars of the 1920s, Betty Balfour. We are currently restoring the fi lm so that it can be seen by audiences for the fi rst time in over 90 years. What does the future hold for the BFI in the ever expanding digital world which is making the real one so much smaller? RB The digital world off ers us enormous opportunities to share our collection with audiences and the advent of the BFI Player has been a game-changer. However, to date, only a tiny fraction of the c1 million fi lms and TV programmes in the collection have been digitised. The digitisation of old fi lms, in particular, is both complex – and expensive. But we need to ensure that we have the funds to make sure that we can make more and more of the collection available to the widest audience.

BFI National Archive

What is the most interesting thing you have come across during your time at the BFI? RB I love the byways as well as the highways of our collection. Among my favourite items are Carol Reed’s annotated shooting script for The Third Man; the world’s oldest surviving film of China (shot in 1900 in Shanghai) and an invitation to Peter Sellers’ first birthday party!

IWC Schaffhausen is launching a limited edition time-piece in celebration of the partnership with the BFI. The brand is also creating a bespoke IWC timepiece in platinum, to be auctioned at the BFI’s unique fundraising gala LUMINOUS, of which IWC is headline sponsor. All proceeds from the auction will go towards the BFI National Archive. This year, for the first time, the auction will be opened to bidders across the world, with a selection of lots available via an online bidding process, set to go live the week of Monday 21st September 2015 at luminousauction.com. The Portugieser Hand-Wound Eight Days Edition ‘BFI London Film Festival 2015’ will be a limited edition of just 59 time-pieces in stainless steel. Each model will be individually numbered on the case-back, alongside the inscription ‘BFI Film Forever 2015’, increasing their appeal to collectors. The timepieces will be available from September at the IWC Boutique on New Bond Street and The Watch Gallery as the brands exclusive retail partner for the launch. The BFI’s LUMINOUS fundraising gala in partnership with IWC will be held on 6th October 2015 at Guildhall on the eve of the 59th BFI London Film Festival in part-nership with American Express®, which runs from 7th-18th October.

The Handmade Fair returns to London at The Green at Hampton Court Palace from 18-20 September, looking to be bigger and better than last year’s event which saw over 12,000 visitors. With craft exhibitors including Kirstie Allsopp, Fiona Cairns and Annie Sloan, there will be plenty to see and do, from jewellery and accessory making to paper crafting, sewing and upcycling, not to mention how to craft the perfect handmade wedding. Annie Sloan offers a little insight into what to expect from this years show and exactly what she thinks of it from the inside. What can we expect from this year’s Handmade Fair? “This year I have curated the workshops that will be taking place in the Upcyling tent! We have lots of exciting projects and techniques to share from some very cool people. I wanted to make sure there’s something for everyone and that it’s not just about painting furniture in the conventional sense.” How did you get involved with the fair and what will you be bringing to the table? “A long time ago Kirstie invited me to appear on her TV show and since then we’ve stayed in touch, mainly via Twitter! I hope to inspire and share how to use certain styles and colours in the home.” Is there a craft that you would like to learn more about and develop? “Floristry! I’d love to learn more about how to work with flowers. I’ve been inspired by Stockists who are florists and now know that there’s so much more to it than just putting some flowers in a vase! I’d love to incorporate my colour schemes and styles into flowers somehow.” Why do you think handcraft is making a comeback in such a throwaway society? “For the very reason that it is a throwaway society – People want things that mean something to them, they want individual pieces that they’ve made their own.” What’s your favourite aspect of the fair? “The Handmade Fair is my favourite fair that I’ve ever, ever been to in the whole world. Even my husband liked it! I loved how it felt like a village garden party. There was a great sense of community and a fantastic buzz.” More than enough reason to head over and try your hand at some of the fantastic classes and courses on offer. Open House London has always been a very popular event. The concept was first created in London 23 years ago by OpenCity, the capital’s leading independent architecture education organisation. The event invites all members of the public to come and experience and understand the value of a well-designed built environment by opening some of London’s most fascinating buildings up for all to explore. So popular is the concept that it has now been extended to other events in cities all around the world from New York and Rome to Tel Aviv and Helsinki. This year the two day event will be taking place on 19 and 20 September aiming to shed light on the latest contemporary architecture shaping our city today. Visitors will be able to find out more about the impact of buildings on their lives, from homes and offices, to public buildings and the role of architects and contemporary design in revitalising places and spaces, and shaping the city as a whole. Returning to the programme this year, 50 years since it was declared operational in 1965, the BT Tower is still very much alive and relaying broadcast, Internet and telephone information around the world. An enduring, distinctive feature of the London skyline for all that time, the weekend will provide a rare opportunity for members of the public to visit the famous revolving floor, 158 metres above the capital. Open House London’s selection of buildings for 2015 is more comprehensive than ever before providing a great opportunity to see, explore and learn about amazing architecture and design in your area and across London over one weekend. More than 700 buildings of all kinds not normally open to the public will open their doors across London, alongside a programme of neighbourhood walks, architects on site, engineering and landscape tours, cycle rides and experts’ talks – all for free. Highlights include for 2015 include: engineering walks with the Institution of Civil Engineers; Archibus Tour with Arriva; and a moonlit walk for Maggie’s and Open House London Culture Crawl on 18th September to raise money for Maggie’s Cancer Centres. FINANCE WITH MATT GOLD

From China Fear to Global Meltdown Our financial insider reviews the global markets Chinese Yuan is falling against the US dollar. From 11th to 24th August, Chinese Yuan depreciated from 6.20 to 6.40 to a dollar. This is the offi cial rate in China. The off shore rate reached 6.51. This is a very fast drop for a currency that is used by 1.4 billion people. The offi cial reason is to echo international market demand to make the Chinese Yuan currency rate more market driven and follow off shore market supply and demand. For years, the US government has been urging the Chinese Yuan to appreciate as China exports more to US than imports from them or in technical terms, China is running a trade surplus against the United States. On the other hand, while “Made in China” is still often found in many consumer products such as iPhone, there are more and more consumer goods such as clothing and sport shoes are now made in places like Vietnam and Indonesia. For those who travel to Beijing and Shanghai, a business dinner may not exactly cost the same as a meal in Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant but no longer at emerging market prices. China labour cost has defi nitely gone up in multiples in the past 10 years. Compared to Japanese Yen over 30% depreciation since Prime Minister Abe took offi ce in December 2012, Chinese Yuan depreciation is not steep enough to revive its low end manufacturing. A more signifi cant gesture of the Chinese Yuan depreciation is that it no longer artifi cially tags along the US Dollar. It is accepting market force to push it around a bit. This could be a step towards making the Chinese Yuan an international currency. Having seen how Russian Ruble collapsed last year, Chinese Central Bankers are very careful. Luckily, the Chinese Yuan is not yet fully convertible so not easy for hedge funds to short. Why should one in Europe or US care about a few percentage drop in a restricted currency like Chinese Yuan? Well, Chinese Yuan is pretty much the last Asian currency standing as everything from Korean Won to Indonesia Rupiah have fallen 17.5% and 20.0% in the past 12 months as of 24th August. This may mean the US Dollar has been the winner but eventually, if all your neighbours are off ering their products at 20% lower than yours, you will have to adjust as well. If US Dollar stays where it is, it could mean US Dollar asset has to drop in prices. This means stocks and properties. US stock market has fallen 7.2% in a month if we use S&P500 as the benchmark. Nasdaq Composite index also dropped 9.1% in the same period to show that even high tech stocks are not immune to asset price correction. Apple share price dropped 14.8% in the same period on the back of concern over its sales in China would slow down. Many US listed companies are international companies that make profi t from all over the world. If “all over the world”

is struggling, many US listed companies will struggle. Commodities such as iron ore, copper and coal have been falling since 2011. China is the biggest importers and users of many commodities. Commodities driven economy like Australia is in winter. Oil at USD 40 means Russia and the Middle East are pumping a lot less money from the ground. The 2008 fi nancial crisis was driven by over leveraging of bank balance sheets. This time, we could be entering into a fundamental valuation correction and we may see defl ation in developed countries and infl ation in emerging markets. Investors could take the 1997 Asian crisis as a reference. This time things should be better as Asian countries or companies have learnt their lessons and did not issue USD debt up to their eyeballs. You do not want to owe people USD when your income in local currency is depreciating fast. The right strategy last time was to hold on to developed market currencies and perhaps pick up asset after the correction. The diffi cult part is how to tell when it is “after the correction”. Elsewhere in the world, the Euro zone looks forward to the next Greek Prime Minister. This seems to be a new series of the Greek Debt drama. Who would be the new Prime Minister? Would the new PM tear up the agreement made by the last PM and refuse to implement the painful austerity measures? The nation has voted to go one way but then a change in leadership could re-open the conversation. It is hard to see the end of the tunnel but perhaps the whole issue has become part of normal life. Euro zone will live with the risk that one day there maybe a Grexit. After rehearsing it a few times since 2008, Grexit may not cause a Tsunami to the world but still a tropical storm. Euro as a currency may have reached a good level against USD or GBP. Euro stock markets have fallen 14% in a month as of 24th August and may need to correct more with the US market.

LUXURY BRANDS

Revolving with the Times Montegrappa bend the rules on the traditional fountain pen to create a masterpiece of design and engineering with a substantial dose of functionality.

Rewriting the book on the fountain pen would be a bold statement to say the least, but if anyone were to have the right, it would fall to the 103 year old Italian manufacturer of some of the finest writing instruments to grace the world’s pages, Montegrappa. Returned to family ownership after a brief spell under the luxury brand holder Richemont group in 2007, no time has been wasted to illustrate that family knows best, with the unveiling of 1 at this years Baselworld. A pen born from unrestricted design ideas and material use, 1 is Montegrappa’s boldest notion of a modern fountain pen, although, you won’t find any trick cartridges or space-age feeder system, this is a fountain pen and only a fountain pen. Q1 draws its design inspirations from the fascinating world of firearms, exercised in a manner that shares a “steampunk” sensibility with Montegrappa’s “ rappa” pen, also in the Cult Collection where 1 sits. While the purpose of weapons is combative, their construction and aesthetic have always been a product of function, allied to standards of manufacturing quality, materials and finish that have been emulated by car makers, camera designers and now, by a pen producer. Fusion is the key, with Q1 marrying ultra-tough and hard titanium for the pen’s barrel with titanium and fine Italian leather for the pen cap, Stainless steel has been employed for the internal parts of the pen, while tradition demands that an 18K gold nib with filigree Montegrappa logo is fitted at the writing end. A plethora of intriguing technical details ensure that the user will return again and again to the 1 to discover fresh features. The Montegrappa octagonal pattern on both leather and titanium creates a contrasting surface with a different tactility to that of the matte-finish barrel. The cap locks onto the barrel with a slot-andpin system reminiscent of a gun scope or camera lens. The arched

pocket clip features the signature ball end-piece for smooth ingress and egress to and from pockets. This pen is the fruit of two years research, which culminated in the invention of a unique multiple cartridge loading system. This system makes it possible for the Q1 pen to write with several ink colours by changing four different cartridges. The mechanism, similar to the one of a bullet cylinder in a gun, is contained entirely inside the pen barrel and is the subject of a registered industrial patent. Q1 will be produced in an edition of only 100 pieces, and will be available only in a fountain pen mode. Appropriately, the 1’s packaging is as exclusive as the fountain pen itself. Inspired by the robustness and functionality of an ammunition case, the chest is made of wood, with soft lining to protect the contents. It is fitted with a number of compartments to accommodate both the pen and its accessories, including auxiliary hardware for its continued maintenance: a pair of gloves, a set of tissues and spare ink cartridges. A final element of the 1 experience is the inclusion of a syringe, specifically supplied for the cleaning of the feeder from the ink colour last used, when changing the cartridge for a different colour. This attention to detail befits a pen that breaks the rules, while defining new ones. iuseppe Aquila, CEO of Montegrappa offered a little insight into the brands thinking behind Q1 and where it is going, and by little, we mean he’s not giving anything away. As a member of the family, did you feel compelled to continue the trade, or was it something you had always believed and dreamt you would be a part of ? As a third generation pen maker, I grew up among pens, ink and paper. Making pens is the only business I have always wanted to be part of. In fact,

20

FEATURE had it been otherwise, I would have not decided to buy back the company when the opportunity arose. In your position as CEO, what have you looked to bring to the brand and how has the direction changed over time? The direction hasn’t changed much, except for the decision to initiate a brand extension followed by the opening of mono-brand boutiques. What has been the ethos behind the brand and why has this proved so successful in the luxury market through an incredibly changed world? Our brand values are ingenious creativity, jaw dropping designs, high-quality materials, superior craftsmanship, century-old savoir faire. Shaken, not stirred... by a passionate Italian cocktail bartender. With such values success is the only option. How has over one hundred years of history in the luxury industry culminated in Q1? We wanted to create a fountain pen with unique features, so we put our heads together and came up with a few ideas. Q1 is one of them. It has taken almost three years from the original concept until the rst pen will be delivered to one of the lucky one hundred owners. Is Q1 a sign of the brands future direction or should we not get ahead of ourselves just yet? The brand is going into multiple directions to suit the taste of our discerning customers. Q1 represents only one of such directions.

What should we expect following 1 Q2! Just kidding... How hard (or easy) is it managing the balance between an historic luxury brand and producing pieces for an increasingly modern world? The world changes and evolves at an unprecedented pace. Life was certainly easier for our predecessors. They could afford to make little or virtually no changes at all in the collection for years. Today, end-users always require new products and the brands must meet such demand, if they want to survive. Within our line, one can nd the right product for the purist as well as a more technological item such as the Q1.

Montegrappa Q1. Titanium and leather construction with an 18K gold nib. Limited to 100 pieces.

From the heyday of iconic cinematic stars and true musicians to their contemporary over exposed counterparts; both have still been drawn to luxury goods, be it as signs of newly gained wealth or for promotional purposes. espectively, the Brands have understood the marketing power of celebrity – again applying the aura of aspiration to an audience believing that talent aside, owning a slice of this luxury would be a tangible tantalising opportunity to live in the world of their idols. This cross culture marketing has obvious benefits to both parties with artists, musicians and athletes being sponsored by the Brands hoping to attract a certain demographic and certain Brands like olex or ichard Mille becoming visible calling cards for having proverbially made it! I mention these Brands specifically because olex has via clever marketing engineered their product as the go to item to denote a certain sense of prosperity. This marketing has come from virtually every performing medium mentioning Rolex somewhere thus allaying to the recipient the importance of the Brand while ichard Mille, though an infant in terms of age compared to the other marques, has simply positioned their product and price point to attract exclusively the wealthy, not rich but wealthy. In turn, every artist and athlete worth their star power has to own a ichard Mille and in turn creates incredible aspiration amongst their fans for the product.

Another Brand that enjoys a similar story is Audemars Piguet, who despite having a fantastic history and pride of place amongst the watch elite saw an astonish boom in the product on there back of their endorsement and association with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Their oyal Oak family, a horological fan favourite, was given a makeover at the turn of the century to create the oyal Oak Offshore; a collection larger in size to their peers. Schwarzenegger associated “T3” and “End of Days” limited edition models cemented the ascendence of the oyal Oak Offshore as the watch of choice for those living larger than life in line with Schwarzenegger personality. From oligarchs to oyalty and of course those celebrated in the performing arts, the Offshore watch become and still is a sign of modern achievement. The association across the Brands from Cartier’s love affair with the true characters of celebrity to Jaeger LeCoultre’s support of the Venice Film Festival; this relationship is tried and tested. The aura of celebrity and associated wealth has never been more visible than in the 21st Century. The Jewellery industry has gained hugely from this recognition and we don’t see this trend ending any time soon. Our only suggestion is there a beautiful and classic era of watchmaking that will stand the test of time while many of those courting the trend of the moment will die and fade. Just remember, there are reasons why entertainers such as Elvis Sinatra have stood the test of time, that same foundation of timeless class applies to the luxury industry too so choose wisely and enjoy your moment in the sun.

Hollywood Watches by Ken Kessler

Watches on the silver screen? Does that mean watches-as-props? Those that appeared because of calculated product placement? Or those blatant, paid-for celebrity endorsements?

FEATURE

Let’s skip the “ambassadors”: with precious few exceptions, the stars seen in watch adverts couldn’t give a toss about the watches they wear, just the size of the cheque. Unless they’re exceptions, like John Travolta, who is a real pilot and does wear Breitlings, genuine watch enthusiasts like Tom Selleck, who wears his own Rolexes, and Sly Stallone, who basically put Panerai on the map because of his love for the brand. They do this in a manner that emulates Steve Mc ueen, who decades earlier chose the watches he wore in his films. There’s a book to be written about the subject, embracing all of the key appearances, including paid ambassadors and product placement, but I wouldn’t want the job of securing rights to still images: film studios are notoriously difficult to work with, even if you’re providing publicity for a film, of which they’re sitting on a few thousand DVDs that they want to shift. Do we mention the ubelin in Clint Eastwood’s Escape From Alcatraz The Chopards in Hollywoodland that didn’t exist in the periods the films portrayed Undoubtedly, among the most effective appearances of watches in your local Odeon was Panerai’s eye-filling debut in big Arnie’s Eraser, when he gave the thenobscure watch (apparently a gift from Stallone) screen time during the credits. Stallone followed a few months later with a Panerai in Daylight, while Arnie moved on to Audemars Piguet oyal Oaks for End of Days and Terminator 3. But is there any watch image more famous – Hollywood-wise – than Steve Mc ueen strapping on a Heuer Monaco for Le Mans, thus creating a cult For such a small object, not as instantly visible as, say, a James Bond-piloted Aston-Martin, wristwatches do enjoy plenty of valuable screen time. Bond watches on their own have been the subjects of books and web sites – the spy has worn enough different timepieces, from his original olexes through Seikos and on to Omegas, to create an ideal collecting topic. It probably started with the appearance of Rudolph Valentino’s own Cartier Tank, which he insisted on wearing in Son of the Sheik in 1926. You can even see it in a number of much-used stills, but back then, free advertising wasn’t on the cards: in the posters produced for the movie, as if to deny that such a delicate timepiece could be worn by such a macho screen character, it was painted out and replaced with a big gold bracelet. Whether or not that was the first screen appearance of an identifiable brand of wristwatch is uncertain, but the biggest boost for recognisable timepieces came in the 1950s, via a brace of diving watches. Hamilton models featured in The Frogmen 1951 with ichard Widmark and Jacques Cousteau wore a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms in his award-winning documentary, The Silent World 1956 . Six years later, and the Submariner worn on Sean Connery’s wrist in Dr. No 1962 made its mark so strongly that it’s now known as the “James Bond Submariner” – the one without crown guards. That connection to 007 adds a few thousand pounds to

second-hand values. It’s too soon for the same effect to apply to Daniel Craig’s Omega Planet Oceans, but find one actually worn in the film, and it will pay for your pension. This year, the watches worn in the forthcoming Spectre include a reissue of the stunning Seamaster 300 on striped cloth strap a la Bond, which will sell out even a production run of 7,007 pieces. While only a few hard-core collectors call it the “ aquel Welch Breitling”, the Breitling ef 765 AVI chronograph that timeless sex symbol donned for the movie Fathom (1967) has seen its value

enhanced for that alone. Even without the connection to Ms Welch, the Breitling has something else in common with all of the best Hollywood watches: it’s a fantastic timepiece regardless of its screen time. Best of all are the occasions when reality often crosses over to the movie, and the watches in the movies are correct for the story lines, especially if it’s a film based on factual events or one that takes a specific period in time. Thus, Tom Hanks and Co. could only wear Omega Speedmaster Professionals in Apollo 13, while Steve Mc ueen, though filming a fictional race, wore a proper, contemporary Heuer in the aforementioned Le Mans, Heuer then being the watch of choice for professional racing drivers. Too bad the Prop Masters of 2001’s Pearl Harbor, who fitted pilots with Hamilton Khakis, failed to realise that quartz didn’t exist in 19 1.

The Authority in Aerobatics Current Red Bull Air Race Championship title holder, Britain’s Nigel Lamb divulges just what it takes to make it to the top and how hard it is to stay there. Just 14 pilots from around the world have achieved their Unrestricted Superlicence from the Red Bull Air Race Committee in order to compete in the Master Class division of the series including two British Pilots at the top of their game.

The pinnacle of aerobatic flying so elite that a select 1 pilots in the world are currently allowed to compete, reserved for those with an unfathomable level of nerve and an apparent immunity to g-force. Hitting up to a massive 10 g during a race event, these pilots are subjected to almost double the force an F1 driver would experience during a race and more than Apollo 16 felt on re-entry. Needless to say, it takes a certain type of person to firstly achieve the impressively high levels of skill required and then to push those boundaries to a whole new level. Every pilot in the line-up has received extensive training at the highest level, offering up a erman with experience in over 130 different types of aircraft including gliders, jets and helicopters, a former Australian top gun pilot and a French top gun pilot instructor, each looking to impart their knowledge on producing the quickest time around the varying stages of the championship. This exclusive group of elite pilots from the aerobatic stage ascended over the iconic Ascot acecourse last month for the British leg of the ed Bull Air ace Championship. Last years

championship winner Nigel Lamb took a brief moment out of his busy schedule at his home for the weekend, the Breitling Hanger to let us in to the secret of success, and it would appear it takes a lot more than mere nerves of steel. Last year was a fantastic year for Lamb and his team, but it was something that had been brewing for some time. We were the first ones to go off in a different direction to everyone else in terms of airplane design, so we went for the M ’ and it was first of all a two seater and very heavy, but the single seater didn’t exist. We then got the first single seater.’ The plane was then developed to get it to a competitive level. We were pretty competitive in 2010 and got a shot for the championship, (I) came third but really had a chance. I was capable of winning it in the last race. Anyway, that was a good sign.’ Unfortunately for the team, following the 2010 event, the ed Bull Air ace had a three year shutdown. However last year saw the return, and with a few more improvements and a continuation mostly in terms of knowledge and analysis of tracks, they were back in the game. We had our first win and then really

27

INTERVIEW

what won the championship for us was just consistency. I didn’t get any more wins, but I was always in second, so got more than enough points to win (the championship so that’s great, that’s all history. Then the question is what do you do next You can’t really go a different direction with the airplane and we developed this particular airplane since 2008, so there’s not a huge amount more we can do with it, so I really tried to change the control system to improve something that had always bugged me a little bit.’ However different, isn’t always better, as the team discovered. The theory I think was good, the rationale is very sound, but we didn’t have enough time to test it properly, so I persevered with it in the races up to now and was lacking in consistency which is really what has dogged me this year. But the bitterest blow is really yesterday (Saturday 15th), because we went back to 2014 setup with an improved - what I thought was an improved - setup. I just didn’t have the performance and you know, it’s not necessarily the airplane, it’s probably the way I’m flying, so yes, I need to be a bit more aggressive I think.

For us here at Ascot, because we’ve had such troubled period for 50% of the season with the elevator, we’ve spent a lot of time analysing that side. So I use my son Max, he does all my analysis. So we did some really scientific stuff with the different elevator control that we had and we decided to go back to 2014 based on proper scientific analysis. The elevator we’ve got just needs to be improved and we didn’t have time for that, so I was doing a lot of flying two weeks ago in preparation for this race and then suffering actually a really bitter blow yesterday because I had great expectations for yesterday and actually didn’t perform very well. And its not so much the place that’s disappointing, it’s the gap.’ There is an incredible balance which is evident the moment you start speaking to Nigel or indeed any of the other pilots, and that is how much they are reliant on the machine and how much the machine is reliant on them. The relationship between pilot and plane is such that the slightest of variant can cause catastrophic consequences on the lap time. As a result Lamb is keen to minimise his impact, but how do train for something so extreme?

INTERVIEW

It’s time in the plane. Well, it’s time in the plane, but also, outside the cockpit, you’ve got to be keeping your general fitness, your flexibility, you’ve got to take care of your neck, your back, your lower back is very important with exercises.’ Aerobic fitness is equally important and fortunately provides a little fun outside this intense world. I play sport, I play racquetball quite a bit, I peddle my bike a bit, so you’re doing that outside the cockpit, but there’s no replacement for g-training. I’ve got a two-seater, so when this

airplane is not in the country, I can go before racing and at least arrive at a race g-fit and roll-fit because you need to keep your reactions going and the roll rates are very fast, so you’ve got to keep the precision and I can do that in my two-seater. But not down in a track, there’s no replacement for being in a track, but of course we get very little track time and that’s the same for everybody. I mean, you’ve just got to do what you can do between races to keep fit and to keep your g threshold up.’

30

and discipline. I hate diets, I really don’t like doing those, like for breakfast you must have one egg and half a kipper or something, so I avoid all of that kind of stuff, but I’m careful in between races and then in the build up to the races, especially during race week, I’m very careful. I do a protein breakfast and lots of fluid, obviously the sleeping patterns, the hydration, no alcohol of course…during race week you know, I’ll have a few beers now and then, but all in moderation and then lunch time, more carbs type stuff. I try not to mix the two and then dinner, I’ll have a light meal early and avoid all the things you know, biscuits, sweets, so when they brings stuff in the back here (the hanger I’ll eat bananas and fruit rather than the nutty, sweet bar that is the one I really want. It’s not as hard as for some athletes, like jockeys, go and speak to a jockey, you’ll get a different answer, they have a life of purgatory, but I guess they get used to it. Training comes in all shapes and size, from diet to exercise, but in a sport like this, there are massive implications for the mental capacity to influence the result, so is there anything that a man who throws a plane around in the air at insanely fast speed fearful of Er, yeh, no, not really. You know, when you view what we do from the outside, it’s fraught with risk, there’s risk everywhere and there’s no doubt that we are immersed in a very detailed risk analysis programme so a lot of it is subconscious. It develops from the day you’re born and your upbringing, how you climb a tree and how you climb up a mountain and stand next to the edge of a cliff and the risks you take as a youngster. The processes you go through which develop your own personal ability to manage risk; riding a bike, do you wear a helmet, all that kind of stuff. The what-if ’s. Having an imagination as to what could go wrong and then try and prevent it and this is exactly that, so it starts from the very front to the very back. The engine, what is it, who built it, how does it run, how’s it maintained, how do you operate it. Everything to do with the airplane from a mechanical point of view to the aerodynamics of it, the feeling of it, everything. You, your fitness, your hydration, your diet, your training and everything, then how you train for the worst case scenarios and then in the end if you’re not in a frame of mind where you feel completely uncomfortable in the environment, then you shouldn’t be doing it. So when I go into the track, I’m more fearful of failure in terms of the clock than I am of oh my god, something might screw up and hit a tree or something, that doesn’t enter my mind. There are things I try and avoid, but I am not really fearful of anything. I mean I look at many other things that people do like base jumping, like people who work with wild animals, I mean there’s all sorts of things that people do on this planet that I wouldn’t even go anywhere near, and that list is so long, I can’t even begin it. So I have huge respect for what other people do and I’m mostly looking at others thinking the same as them looking at us. I’m very comfortable with what I do and I look at so many other things and go oh my god, you guys are nuts. These guys outside Ascot doing flips on their bikes, the x-guys, oh my god. No, it does my head in.’

Although these pilots will burn an unimaginable amount of calories during a race weekend, it is not an everyday activity, and as a fellow sweet-lover, it is easy to sympathise with Nigel’s plight when it comes to eating in the real world. I do have a fairly strict pattern. I have a sweet tooth, so always, always prone to porkiness and I enjoy the odd beer, but I think a lot of people struggle with that. I envy the people who like more savoury, but I love chocolate, so you’ve got that in between, your general lifestyle, moderation

Leading Ladies with Helen Erhabor Hollywood: the land of glitz, glamour and gratifi cation. A glistening movie realm where dreams are birthed and visions are actualised. Seducing us with its cinematic prowess, Hollywood has impacted our lives with profound motion pictures and unforgettable characters, providing escapism, entertainment and enlightenment through the world of make-believe. Then there are the leading ladies the glamorous and formidable characters who against all odds triumph over adversity and evil emerging as a pearl of a woman’. These leading ladies often birth good and beauty out of a testing and troublesome situation, turning the most diffi cult a ictions into pearls. A pearl is birthed when a foreign body or an irritant’ a icts an oyster causing the oyster to secrete layers of nacre, which is the pearlescent substance that forms the fi nal pearl. This substance is then secreted around the intruder gradually and patiently engulfi ng the off ensive material layer by layer until a beautiful pearl is formed, transforming an otherwise unpleasant situation into a triumphant victory. Similar to many leading ladies, the pearl is also known for transforming an otherwise unpleasant situation into a triumphant victory. Hollywood’s leading ladies from Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet and Salma Hayek share common characteristics of beauty, sophistication and individuality, coupled

with their on and off screen portrayal of a woman’s strength and power. These leading ladies often take on the roles of women whom are strong yet graceful, powerful yet beautiful and tenacious yet heroic, qualities and characteristics embodied by a pearl creating strong resonance between a pearl and a leading lady – the uniqueness and individual beauty (each pearl is individual and unique, no two are ever the same), the beauty and gracefulness, the strength and power, the resilience and determination. These alluring leading ladies gains legions of adoring fans and admirers worldwide, revered for their beauty and gracefulness and admired for their strength, power, defi ance and resilience in both the real and movie world. Their private lives are also on display and, like a movie; we watch and often admire the desirable qualities and characteristics that makes a leading lady worthy of admiration, desirability and recognition. Yet in comparison to each of Hollywood’s leading ladies; every woman has been cast as the leading lady in the movie of her own life, and just like the Hollywood greats, we overcome adversity, override a iction, triumph good over bad, display resilience, defi ance and formidability, with each leading lady possessing individual and unique characteristics of beauty, sophistication, strength and power – alluring qualities worthy of admiration – Just like a Pearl.

Zen Meso ® Facial from John Tsagaris Settled in the heart of a quiet and unobtrusive part of Chelsea, just off the King’s Road, lies The John Tsagaris private beauty and wellbeing clinic. Here, with its ultra-chic, modern and stylish interior, there is a soothing calm which you notice as soon as you enter the premises.

Doctor John Tsagaris, world renowned principle practitioner and holder of an Honours degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine TCM combined with Human Bioscience and holder of a post graduate diploma in skin disorders and cosmetology, believes ‘healthy skin is a beautiful skin’. He combines his extensive knowledge of traditional C h i n e s e

medicine with western science. TCM is also known to be one of the oldest healing systems that accelerates the body’s own healing powers and although John does use his many skills to treat various health and medical conditions, he has also developed a range of unique signature beauty treatments by combining the two and these procedures are all available in his clinic. The very latest Zen Meso® Facial Treatment has been pioneered by John and is the ultimate rejuvenation treatment for instant, long lasting results using breakthrough aesthetic medical technology and oriental wisdom. Incorporating deeply hydrating and nourishing Meso-therapy, LED light therapy for maximum active absorption and an ultra-soothing revitalising mask, it is an integration of his Signature Beauty Acupuncture alongside his Chinese medicine interventions. Before this bespoke treatment begins, John does a visual appraisal and consultation during which he applies the knowledge he has gained over twenty five years of experience. He describes the whole procedure and talks about how the skin is affected by so many aspects of everyday life such as the weather, digestion and hormones and he explains that its response to these constant changes all leads to the inevitability of ageing. He is passionate about his work and in his own words he believes ‘The way to balance these effects and strengthen the ability of the skin to repair and defend itself is my way to address a beautiful and youthful skin’. John is not a fan of injecting poisons into your body so, in keeping with his beliefs, the Zen Meso® is a natural and minimally invasive treatment. With his calm and serene manner he puts you completely at ease and asks you to kick off your shoes to make yourself more comfortable before hopping onto the bed where he administers the treatment. Because the initial Meso-therapy involves micro injections of specially prepared active ingredients which include natural hyaluronic acid and antioxidants that are applied directly into the areas of concern, John prepares the skin by applying johntsagaris.co.uk

a numbing cream all over the face. The injections are then administered with the aim of delivering the vitamins directly into the middle layer of the skin. This activates micro circulation in the skin itself and acts as a remedial agent which is delivered directly to the targeted areas oxygenating the skin and stimulating regeneration activity. Due to the numbing effect of the cream, the only sensation you might feel is a slight pricking of the skin but John is so skilled, this is done before you even realise it. The deeply hydrating and nourishing Meso-therapy rejuvenates the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production which are the key building blocks and are crucial in fighting aging. This is then followed up by the customised soothing and rejuvenating Photodynamic or LED light therapy. LED light therapy was developed by NASA and is one of the most acclaimed treatments in the fight against anti-aging and used after the Signature Beauty Acupuncture, it encourages the skin’s cellular and tissue stimulation and again enhances collagen and elastin production resulting in visibly radiant and younger looking skin. It works by converting light energy which is already found in skin cells and promotes healing anti-aging effects by increasing the rate of cell renewal which in turn then greatly reduces wrinkles. This is a unique and highly advanced treatment that works from

a cellular level to re-programme the skins ability to adapt to the ageing process. John finishes the treatment by applying a blissfully soothing face mask. Using gentle acupressure he uses a specially designed Jade facial roller, which is similar to a derma roller, and is designed in such a way that it fits the contours of your face. Jade has been used for thousands of years as a traditional Chinese therapeutic tool to promote a healthy skin and good circulation. To complement the ultra-concentrated and luxurious treatment, the smoothness of the Jade also provides gentle and soothing stimulation while the mask moisturises and detoxifies the skin, improves circulation and replenishes nutrients intensely hydrating the skin leaving it visibly plumped with a youthful, radiant and re-energised complexion. To summarise, the acupuncture addresses the skins structural integrity, the LED Light therapy focuses on skin’s DNA performance and the treatment mask supports the dermal matrix. The full facial takes up to two hours and a two week follow up is required. For best results, John recommends an additional treatment after one month. John Tsagaris ZenMeso® Facial Treatment starts from £495 per treatment.

At the weekend, everyone starts heading out of LA and into the desert. Famed for its buzzing energy, 2 -hour casinos and endless entertainment options, the focal point of the renowned resort is the Strip. Just over miles long and lined with some of the most elaborate themed hotels in the world, such as the pyramidshaped Luxor, the Eiffel Tower of Paris and the mesmerising dancing fountains of the Bellagio, this non-stop playground is full of things to see and do. Whatever the age, whatever the budget and whatever the interest may be from non-stop partying, shopping to professional gambling Vegas boasts it all. In a car miles is no problem, and many of the hotels boast underground valet car parking which is often free. However sometimes it isn’t always practical to take a car just to visit the surrounding hotels on the Strip and you may prefer to walk, the searing desert heat of the summer may make this more tiring than it sounds and the solution to that is the Strip’s very own Monorail.

Allowing visitors to hop between hotels with ease, the Monorail is quick and cheap, with a 2 -hour ticket costing just 12 per person, making it perfect if you want to try out one of the many restaurants, shows and nightlife up and down the Strip. Yauatcha celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival To celebrate one of the oldest and most respected traditions in the Chinese calendar - the Mid-Autumn Festival - Yauatcha Soho and Yauatcha City will be serving moon cakes on their menus from 17th August to 27th September. Yauatcha has created a signature moon cake to mark the occasion - a sweet pastry exterior with a thick, Chinese custard filling. Traditional moon cakes feature a lotus seed filling however the restaurant has created a modern take on the filling for this classic cake whilst still retaining the traditional shape. Launched last month - the eighth month - an auspicious date due to eight being a lucky number in China - these small Chinese pastries are spherical in shape to represent the full moon and unity. They are traditionally offered as gifts during the eighth month of the Chinese calendar when the moon is considered to be at its roundest - the Chinese used to worship the mountain gods under the full moon once the harvest was complete. A respected part of the country’s cultural heritage, the festival originated before 1000BC and to this day celebrates the gathering of friends and family, thanksgiving and prayer. The moon cakes will be on offer at both Yauatcha Soho and Yauatcha City on the à la carte menu and through the retail counters. They will be priced at £3 each on the retail menu and £6.20 on the à la carte menus where the moon cake is served with a vanilla ice cream and crème anglaise.

‘Maker’, decided by a public vote, will be the recipient of a six month mentoring programme from the team at Selfridges, and will cover product development, packaging, branding and Marketing & PR. Brands taking part in the special event include the National Trust; Mighty Bee: the UK’s first aw Coconut Water; and The Marshmallowist. www.selfridges.co.uk

The Oenophilist

with Edward Gerard, Wine Buyer for Harrods

dward erard started his career c cling cases o fine wine round the SW1 and SW3 postcodes. Some 13 years later after a stint in the and having e tensivel traveled and tasted his wa around the wine world he finds himsel with the enviable ob o selecting the vast range available in the ine ooms at arrods

What price do you need to pay for a decent bottle of wine? This was a question put to me the other day and unfortunately the answer is not altogether simple. I have tried wines at £6 that have been perfectly decent and wines at £100+ that have frankly been disappointing. But my rule of thumb is to learn the grapes and regions that you enjoy first and then expect to pay between £10 and £25 for a good quality option. I have chosen three wines which are stocked here in The Wine Room at Harrods, that I believe hit the sweet spot between value and great quality! For a sparkling wine, I have chosen the 2014 Villa Marcello Prosecco that we retail for £1 .95. This has lovely fresh pear and apple notes with a hint of acacia blossom, the finish is dry and refreshing and at just 11% alcohol it makes a perfect summer aperitif. Up next is my white wine of choice at the moment and it comes in the form of the simply delicious 2014 Domaine de

Pellehaut Chardonnay which we retail at £12.95. This erupts from the glass with abundant tropical aromas of freshly cut passion fruit and perfectly ripe mangoes. The palate is balanced and full of the fleshy yellow stone fruit of mangoes, peaches and apricots then the passion fruit comes back and envelopes the finish with those delicious tropical notes again. This is a perfect white wine that can ably dance with multiple food pairings. As for a red, there are many options in our range from great petit chateau Bordeaux to full bodied Aussie Shiraz but ultimately it was the 2012 Casa Primicia Carravaleca ioja Crianza retailing at £16.95 that I’ve chosen. It has wonderfully powerful notes of blackcurrant and blueberry jam with subtle notes of black olives, sage and fresh vanilla pod. These complex notes follow onto the palate where the plush silky structure of the wine allows the elements to dance around your mouth and will adequately combine with a plethora of food pairings.

Sackville’s Beef and Truffle Bar Speciality restaurants are quite often a joy and a labour of love for their founders and owners and they thrive on creativity. Sackville’s new tru e bar and grill in the heart of exclusive Mayfair is no exception. Focusing on combining luxurious black tru e with the fi nest cuts of quality prime beef from around the world such as Japanese Wagyu and grass fed Casterbridge Angus which has been aged for 28 days; Sackville’s off ers a showcase selection of fi ve gourmet burgers. Also available are various steaks and other meat and main dishes which have all been exclusively created by executive chef Wayne Dixon. Wayne is a former senior sous chef at Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Grill and brings with him years of culinary experience allowing him to create and concoct these mouth watering and succulent treats. The fundamental ingredient of this meat focused menu is the decadent tru e. Sourced from Istria in Croatia and known for its superior quality, it adds a special touch of unique fl avour and richness to many of the dishes. Spread over two fl oors, the forty two cover ground fl oor dining room and sixteen cover bar and lounge downstairs have a New York inspired theme and the restaurant has been designed in the colours of a typical autumn tru e hunt. In keeping with the overall decor, the stylish interior uses earthy colours such as greens and mustard yellows to complement the exposed brickwork.

As you would expect from this menu, tru e is off ered with almost everything and this includes the starters. The delicious Tru e Hunt consists of grilled and marinated mushrooms with tru e salami and tru e dust and the Carpaccio uses the supreme USDA fi llet which has been fi nely cut in the house and is generously served with parmesan and tru e oil. Steak is always a good choice and the Wagyu rib eye is superb in quality and heavily marbled with fat, this ensures that the texture is tender and juicy and the sweet taste will have you fi nishing every last piece. If you are up for the burger challenge, George’s Black Burger has a Wagyu patty with dark tru e mayonnaise and foie gras mousse all in a tru e brioche bun. Or try the extravagant Fat Pat which consists of a Wagyu patty and an Angus patty which has been topped off with tomato relish, peppered pancetta and melted emmental. There is also a vegetarian option which has a falafel patty with tomato relish and a tru e mushroom pur e and various sides also have an inclusion of tru e. If you don’t want to go home after the meal but want to enjoy your experience a little longer, you can visit the downstairs bar which is masterminded by expert mixologist, Monica berg and enjoy a cocktail or two or perhaps another glass of wine. If you are looking for a true meat feast or an extravagant burger made with a diff erence, visit this restaurant and you won’t be disappointed.

Salvatore’s tails

alvatore alabrese amousl known as he aestro is one o the world s to bartenders e made a name or himsel sourcing and mi ing i uid istor vintage s irits dating back to

As all of the entries included Amalfi produce we thought, why not widen the entry pool? Together with Andrea Ferrigno, the owner of Matin e in Maiori - which I would say is one of the best bars in the south of Italy - we whittled down the submissions to just nine competitors who went head to head, presenting drinks they had conceived earlier. Now, I’m something of a veteran of judging cocktail competitions, but I can tell you that without a doubt, I have never been prouder than to see an audience of 700 turn out for the open-air event, at the water’s edge in the local harbour and in the shadow of the town’s 300-year-old castle. At one point I even got a standing ovation! After three rounds of sipping Amalfi cocktails, I was really living La Dolce Vita and astounded by the creativity and imagination of some of the competitors who produced drinks worthy of the International stage. From these, three finalists were chosen and presented with a mystery box of ingredients, thinking on their feet they first had to produce a long refreshing drink, then with my oldest friend, the Savoy Hotel’s former head bartender Peter Dorelli at my side as a fellow judge, I asked them to prepare a twist on a White Lady gin, lemon juice, Cointreau and egg white, shaken and served in a delicate coupe glass) a drink innately associated with the Savoy. I’m happy that it was ultimately an Italian bartender, Antonio Esposito, from Azoth Cocktail bar in nearby Naples that triumphed: another great walking and talking advert for Italy! Antonio’s winning entry combined Tanqueray in, limoncello, bergamot liqueur, pink grapefruit and a reduction of wine from Furore and local herbs. If you’d like to try his drink, called Moment of Madness or the original White Lady, my staff and I would be delighted to reproduce them both for you at my bar in London. We can raise a toast to Maiori and hopefully I can convert you to my first love too. Salute!

Regular readers of this column, or guests at my bar ‘Salvatore’s Bar’ at Playboy Club, London, may have noticed that from time to time I happen to mention - just in passing - that I am Italian. Yes indeed, I am a walking, talking advert for La Bella Italia! More specifically, I am a champion of my home town, Maiori, the beautiful Amalfi coast where it is found and the fantastic produce and hospitality that emanates from there. As recognition of my achievements around the world, two years ago, the local government of Salerno awarded me ‘Salernitani Illustri nel Mondo’ an honour which is something like an OBE. With this in mind this year the local council under the new administration of Mayor Antonio Capone were looking for new ways of promoting tourism in the area and approached me with the idea of holding a cocktail competition with the main rule being that you must include Amalfi Coast produce in the ingredients list. From the beautiful lemons we’re famous for, to the limoncello we make from them and the countless other fruits and herbaceous liqueurs that are made locally, we wanted competitors to put them together in a refreshing new drink that captured the spirit of the area: The Maestro Challenge was born and I’m proud to say the grand final was held last month. While we initially limited this to bartenders in the local area, word spread on Facebook and suddenly we had more than 100 entries, from across Italy and Europe.

Caterham 270S 1956 Ford Thunderbird Two icons from both sides of the pond. One of Caterham’s latest additions to their line-up, the Seven 270S in the British countryside and an American icon from Ford with a stunning example of the twoseat Thunderbird available for you to buy right now at Chelsea Cars.

FEATURE Dreaming of long sunny days on the open road in the picturesque British countryside is a pastime of many. But what is the perfect car to feature in such dreams? Caterham have for many years provided a more than suitable contender in their iconic Seven machine, and now they have introduced a few additions to the mix, just to make the dreaming a little more exciting. A step up from the entry level Seven 160, the new 270 offers a much more complete package that packs a bigger punch whilst maintaining a sufficient level of everyday drive-ability. The 270 features a 1.6-litre Ford Sigma engine which produces 135 bhp at a high revving 6,800 rpm with 165 Nm of torque at just over ,000. Thanks to the ever impressive weight of just 5 0 kg, 1600cc is more than enough to propel the 270 from zero to sixty in just 5.0 seconds. And considering the power-to-weight ratio of a whopping 250 bhp-per-tonne, it is easy to understand why this might be an enjoyable car to drive. The 270S - as driven - features the addition ‘S’ pack which is focused towards the road user with a fully carpeted interior, black leather seats, a 12v socket, full windscreen, hood and side screens and a choice of four paint finishes. Alternatively, you could choose the ’ pack which lends itself to both road and track use. Maintaining its road usability, this

version also features a limited-slip differential, lightweight flywheel, rear anti-roll bar, sport suspension pack, uprated brake master cylinder, composite race seats and 4-point race harnesses allowing you to make the most of the car around the track. Regardless of the pack you choose - or not if you would prefer the standard version - the car is well balanced to offer a fantastic driving experience wherever you choose to take it. In the countryside on the outskirts of London, you can open up the throttle and take in the invigorating throaty roar from the stylish and unmissable exhaust positioned conveniently next to your head - considering you are basically seated on the floor with your legs accommodated by the long bonnet section. Due to the high-revving engine and responsive nature of the steering, you can take pleasure in playing with the gear changes through the winding roads using the short shifting ‘box to maximise thrill levels. Drop it down an extra gear and you will find it easy to get this pocket-rocket sideways, just remember that you are essentially sitting over the rear axle, so anything you throw out will be taking you with it. What this does mean however, is that you have so much feel through every twist, turn and gear change, that it immediately becomes an incredibly easy car to enjoy regardless of your driving skill level. What makes this car even better is the versatility in the drive. If you are looking for a lazy Sunday morning cruise in the sun one week and a fuel filled weekend at the local track the next, then this is the car for you. For the latter, you may want to consider the ‘R’ pack for the additional body control to maximise your times, but either way, you can happily drive to the track (with a support car and spare tyres following behind if you’re hitting it hard) at a leisurely pace, taking in the country air and make the most of a day on the track with the same car. Fortunately, what this car lacks in the rain-friendly stakes, it more than makes up for in sun soaked open-top driving joy. The second you jump in and start the engine, a smile will spread across your face as well as the face of anybody within earshot. And that is simply the beginning. Punch the accelerator, release the handbrake and engage the clutch and you will be thrust forward in dramatic fashion with the added pleasure of each and every change-up. It is not the fastest car you can buy, but thanks to the incredibly low centre of gravity and the fact that your eyes are approximately a hairs width away from the ground, the effect is undeniably exhilarating.

69

REVIEW

Leather seats as part of the ‘S’ pack are a necessary addition if you are looking for a slightly more comfortable ride and thankfully take nothing away from the sporty nature of the car. Equally, the optional half hood is an essential piece of kit for the weekend drive, especially if you plan on taking a pit stop. With the notorious British weather, you never know when the rain might come, but this allows you to keep dry whilst still enjoying the fresh air and uncompromised exhaust tone. Caterham’s Seven has never been a car for the faint of heart, nor has it regularly been an impulse purchase, buyers have been as calculated as the cars design which has been perfected over 58 years. Originally produced under Lotus, the rights for the design were bought by Caterham in 1973 once production had ceased after 15 years and now, after considerable development, no longer represents any part of the original design that was purchased. It does of course maintain the underlying original purpose born from the innovative motorsport design ideas of a Royal Air Force pilot. The superlightweight yet incredibly strong structural design is the secret to the Caterham Seven’s success and the performance parts added to the 270S merely provide a swifter, more composed way of getting the narrow, aluminium body and its passenger(s) from a to b. The responsiveness is impressive, only highlighted by the small diameter steering wheel, making every turn a joy. Especially as you get to watch it all unfold in front of you. The independent front suspension lifts and shudders across the uneven surface, soaking up imperfections and ensuring consistent contact between tyre and tarmac, whilst the long nose turns in with a precise determination. Punch the accelerator on the apex and you will fi nd yourself being dragged through the turn with a similar feel to sitting in the back row on a rollercoaster. The benefi t of this however is that you are the one handling the controls, so you can decide just how much you want to push the drive and how many tyres you fancy using. With such a low ground clearance and minimal overall height, the Seven is and always has been blessed with an unfathomably low centre of gravity. When combined with its relatively wide track, this car is allowed to travel in directions and at speeds unachievable for most production vehicles on the road, and certainly not any for the same price as you can get hold of one of these. Starting at a surprising £19,995 for the home-build kit or £22,995 assembled

at the factory, this is a born and bred sports car with an unrivaled history that will make you smile every turn of your journey. For any potential buyers interested in the latest from the Caterham marque, this is the perfect place to start. Packing more of a punch than the entry 160, whilst providing the same bare bones driving please, this car has more than enough under the bonnet to maximise the driving potential on UK roads. If you look towards the other new additions, you will fi nd yourself questioning whether either the 360 or 20 would really off er such a perfect balance between a track-ready racer and an enjoyable weekend car with both featuring a much larger - in proportion to the cars size - 2.0-litre Ford Duratec. The great thing about this car is that you always have the option to upgrade if you feel that you have outgrown your current model, but it would be a wise choice to start here if you are just starting out in the two-seater, super-lightweight sportscar world. It may come as a surprise just how far a 1.6-litre engine goes in something that weighs just over half a tonne! There will be plenty of opportunity to experience the ride of the 2.0-litre versions when you take your 270 to the track and fi nd some like-minded enthusiasts who have a few more years experience in the hot seat. Then you can decide which version to go for next, but you will always remember your fi rst time.

‘56 Thunderbird

An American classic with both style and substance

An American icon in its own right, Ford created a whole new market segment around the first generation Thunderbird - ‘personal luxury car’ - to avoid competition with the European sports car imports. This example was born in 1956, a year which saw the lowest production numbers of this 1950’s classic. The first generation Thunderbird offered the first Ford two-seater since 1938 and what an excellent job they did. Designed to provide a more comfortable ride than focussing on speed, this was pitched as a swift luxury tourer rather than a sports car thanks to its V8 block which allowed it to reach 110-120 mph.

T: 020 3005 2857 | info@justwheelrepair.co.uk www.justwheelrepair.co.uk

Complete with both soft and hard top options - with the extra porthole windows included on the hard roof - this is a fantastic car rarely available in the UK. Finished with stunning black coachwork and impressive contrast red and white interior, the car also features power steering, an automatic gearbox, air conditioning and continental pack.

The Post Summer Search with Emma Seaton Head of Savills Wandsworth

We’ve had a scorcher of a summer both in Wandsworth and across South West London with plenty of activity in the sales market, particularly between the £1million and £2million marks. These family houses often make up our busiest market, with so much to appeal to families in this area; including wonderful schools, communities and open spaces. This appeal has not at all dimmed; especially evident in the summer when popping down to the common! Our stock levels are fairly strong with some stunning houses and flats, though it is often worth bearing in mind that many properties are kept off the open market, especially in the build up to September. In light of this I would always encourage those looking to buy to get in touch with us to see the full range of our available properties. We have an absolutely stunning house overlooking the common on Wandsworth Common West Side at the moment, with five bedrooms and a gorgeous and secluded landscaped garden. The house has recently undergone complete refurbishment to the most exacting of standards and will make a wonderful family home. The large open plan kitchen, dining and living room provides exactly what modern families now look for, who tend to prefer to live in a more inclusive environment. Bi-fold doors open the entire wall out into the garden, offering an excellent space for both family life and entertaining. It’s fantastic. Along with the ever changing trends in buyer preferences, their expectation of the service they receive from the agents has also increased; and this is something which we are delighted to provide.

Our Northcote oad office now opens seven days a week, from where buyers and renters can arrange viewings across Clapham, Balham, Wandsworth and Battersea. It is a pleasure to provide a helpful and honest service for our clients, especially in the midst of such un-regularisation of estate agency and cowboys in the market who give the industry a bad name. The market as a whole has now had a little more time to absorb the changes to stamp duty in December last year’s Autumn Statement, though we are still seeing its effect, particularly in the £2million to £3million price brackets in Wandsworth, where buyers have to take into account significantly higher costs of purchasing. Despite this, we have seen some excellent sales over the past couple of months and the best in class properties do, as always, continue to sell very well. The September market is generally fairly vibrant and exciting, as many buyers who have been away over the summer weeks renew their search, and we expect to see a great few months ahead.

Recycle, Renovate, Renew with Kate Gould

Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer with more than a decade’s hands-on experience transforming gardens of all sizes and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where she has been awarded three Gold medals. If you would like to know more about our services please contact Kate at kategouldgardens.com

These words trip very easily off the tongue but perhaps are not so easy to put into action. We are all used to recycling our kitchen waste now but perhaps something new we could all think about is how we can reuse old items in the garden. At the 2013 Chelsea flower show we created a show garden called The Wasteland which transformed a perceived old water pumping station into a usable community space using the leftover infrastructure and items that we “imagined” would be found on the site. These ubiquitous items of rubbish were those that we see on a regular basis lying by the side of the road or in skips and they were transformed into interesting and very importantly, attractive pieces that could have a viable second life in a garden. We reused several items in the garden but two of the most striking reuses were the shopping trolley and the sheet steel. Supermarket shopping trolley - These are incredibly expensive to make and are strong and almost indestructible. They are chromed to make them shiny and when this begins to wear off it is too expensive for the supermarkets to have them re-chromed so they go back to the manufacturer where they are smelted down and remade. They can be bought or salvaged for very small amounts of money. The metal in supermarket trolleys can be cut and reformed into screening, walkways or tree guards. At Chelsea we created a large screen of trolley sides that help to divide up the garden. Interestingly everyone who saw it recognised it as trolleys but was amazed that an everyday object that they considered had only one single purpose could be used for something entirely different. This was the first of many surprises in the garden all with the intention

of opening people’s eyes to the possibility of reusing everyday items in a totally different but yet practical way. Galvanised sheet steel - These panels do rust in time but there are hundreds of thousands lying around from old roofs that can be reused. We used them as a vertical boundary treatment behind trees and evergreen shrubs. This softened their hard visual effect and the galvanised surface caught and reflected the light, which against the concrete in the garden was warming and even on dull days the garden was never gloomy, harsh or uninviting. Local reclamation yards or scrap yards have second-hand galvanised panels available and are usually happy for you to pick through and select the best out of the pile. They must be screwed together with rubber washers in between and overlapped by at least one third to ensure that wind cannot whip behind and bend them free of their fixings. The garden for all of its “rubbish” as one person called it was exceptionally well received and the overall comment “pretty” or “beautiful” which just goes to prove that rubbish reused with thoughts and care, even though it still has its original form can with careful planting and a good layout create an attractive space that people want to spend time in. It will never be possible to recycle everything into a garden but if we are more careful with how we think about our waste and consider whether something can have a second life then we will be much farther towards a world where we no longer turn to landfill as the first and only option for broken item. kategouldgardens.com

Established housing provider Peabody is an integral part of this developing trend by providing new build homes at Merchants Walk to first time buyers, couples and families. Due to launch Wednesday 9th September, Peabody will release the next phase of private sale homes at one of its flagship developments, Merchants Walk. Peabody works solely in London, with a presence in the majority of London boroughs and own and manage around 27,000 homes, providing housing for over 80,000 people across London. This stunning development offers affordable home ownership to a variety of purchasers. With the average price of an apartment

With the average rental yield expected to be in the region of 5% and the improving E3 post-code, these apartments also make for a great investment. David Jubb, Savills reater London Development Sales Team comments, “As the first of four phases to be launched in the scheme, those buying now can expect to see strong capital growth at Merchants Walk and a good return on their investment in the future.” Each apartment features light and airy living spaces with high specification finishes and private outdoor space. ‘Safe Haven’ Ibiza Sets Tourism Records but Remains Peaceful Inland This summer traditional Spanish tourist resorts have welcomed record numbers of visitors as the holidaying public returns to familiarity. In July, aviation authority AENA reported a 17th consecutive month of passenger growth through Ibiza Airport, but agent Sotheby’s International ealty says there’s still plenty of peace and tranquillity to be found. lynn Evans, Managing Director of Ibiza Sotheby’s International ealty, says, “Many of us saw the photos of jampacked beaches at Spanish hotspots last month, reflecting the fact that in the first seven months of 2015 a record 37.9 million tourists arrived in Spain, up .7% on last year. In the same period, almost 3.5 million passengers passed through Ibiza Airport, up .9%, and July figures from the official Hotel Owner’s Federation show occupancy rates up again, and now well above 90% in both Ibiza and Formentera. This is great news for the economy, and Ibiza was ready with many new coastal attractions to welcome the extra visitors. At the same time, travellers can still find peace and tranquillity just a few moments from the coast.” “We have dozens of properties for sale, and for rent, located in Ibiza’s unspoilt boho’ countryside interior,” continues lynn. “And, thanks to the relatively small size of the Island, some 571km , even if your property was positioned right at the centre of the island, beaches, nightlife and bright lights will never be more than 20 minutes away. The advantages of buying an inland property

can be many, including more extensive grounds and even larger room sizes, while the likelihood of being overlooked by neighbours, or even hearing them, is greatly reduced.” 2015 is proving to be a vintage year for the tourism industry in Ibiza. Year on year, the Island sees returning royalty, A-list celebrities, industry leaders and some of the world’s wealthiest plutocrats. Among those not managing to hide from the press lenses have been Princess Beatrice, Anne Hathaway, Mariah Carey and James Packer, and Oprah Winfrey. The other trend to emerge from first-half tourism figures is that more travellers than ever are choosing to make their own arrangements, rather than relying on package tours. A record 10.2 million tourists opted for non-hotel accommodation, up 8.7% on 201 , and 70.7% of arrivals came to Spain without booking as a package. Both of these figures indicate that buying a countryside property in Ibiza could also prove to be a profitable rental investment. On the back of such a successful summer for tourism, the Balearic overnment is opening a public tender process with the aim of encouraging more airlines to continue to fly to the Islands between October and March. Additional flights during the winter months will increase visitor numbers and open up Ibiza’s other inland attractions - from hiking to cycling and yoga to bird watching.

Tech City reaches new heights North of the Square Mile lies Tech City, an area that was once considered a City Fringe location but has come into its own in recent years. Notably, in November 2010, David Cameron announced government’s ambition for East of London to become a world-leading technology city to rival Silicon Valley. Having undergone significant redevelopment and with investment from companies such as Cisco, Facebook and oogle, today the area around Old Street roundabout sits alongside San Francisco and New York as one of the largest technology clusters globally. At the heart of Tech City is Shoreditch, where almost five times more new businesses were set up between 2013 and 201 than in Canary Wharf. An area known for its edge and entrepreneurial spirit, Shoreditch is constantly evolving, with new shops, restaurants, caf s and bars appearing all the time, from worldrenowned fine dining to quirky speakeasies and experimental popups. The rise of the tech sector around so-called Silicon roundabout has not only had a commercial impact, but has also driven growth in the residential market. This month sees the opening of The Atlas Building’s marketing suite and show apartment, overlooking the development on City oad. The mixed-use scheme, which is being developed by private property development and investment firm ocket Investments, will include a dramatic 0-storey residential tower, a 10-storey office building, as well as a new public piazza and retail space. With a striking silhouette and spectacular cityscape views across the City and the West End, the tower will be a collection

of 302 apartments, including studios, one, two and three bedroom apartments and penthouses – all with either a balcony or terrace. As well as highly-specified homes, the development will offer residents hotel-style amenities and services, including a gym, spa, swimming pool, 2 -hour concierge and security and a private residents’ lounge. The bold design by award-winning international architectural practice MAKE Architects aptly responds to the spirit of innovation that is transforming this part of London. With further growth and regeneration predicted, The Atlas Building offers a unique chance to be part of one of London’s most vibrant and opportunistic areas.
