FILL YOUR HEART

WITH NORTHERN IRELAND, MADE FOR GOLF

As experienced golfers are no doubt aware, Northern Ireland is home to some of the best golf courses in the world despite its relatively small size as a country. Boasting over 90 exceptional courses, many of which having been accredited with a Golf Quality and Assurance award, you are completely spoilt for choice. When it comes to golf, Northern Ireland is the perfect mix of high quality parkland golf courses and top-class hospitality, offering fantastic value as well as excellent locations for that much anticipated golf break. If you are looking to mix it up when planning your trip, Belfast and Londonderry provide golfers with spacious countryside, elegant resorts and the option to stay in a city centre. What more could you want?

Famous for home-grown heroes, world-ranked players including Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell all honed their skills in this exceptionally beautiful part of the world and the courses they played on gave them the experience and ability to go on to win various championship golf tournaments.

Direct flights from London City Airport will take you to George Best Belfast City Airport in an hour and 25 minutes and depending on the nature of your trip, you might want to arrange car hire as a convenient method of transport; especially if you are planning to visit more than one course or any of the historic landmarks this stunning area has to offer.

If you’ve had an early morning flight, a good way to break up your journey is to stop off and admire the magnificent awardwinning Culloden Estate & Spa which is just ten minutes’ drive from the airport. Standing high on the slopes of the Holywood Hills, overlooking Belfast Lough and the County Antrim Coastline it is the most prestigious luxury five-star hotel in Northern Ireland.

Originally built as an official palace for the Bishops of Down, the Culloden stands in 12 acres of beautiful, secluded gardens and woodland. Palatial surroundings, exquisite decor, fine antiques, and exceptional service combine to give the Culloden Estate and Spa a unique air of elegance.

With all its tranquil opulence you could be forgiven for thinking the Culloden is a rural retreat, however, this beautiful property has the added advantage of being just 10 minutes from Belfast City centre and is conveniently located for many of Northern Ireland’s major visitor attractions.

As Northern Ireland does have so much to offer in the way of golf courses, it would be a shame not to take full advantage of the fantastic selection and plan your break by visiting as many as you are able to.

Kick off your tour at Holywood Golf Club which is just 15 minutes away from the Culloden Estate and seven miles outside of Belfast. Set high in the Holywood Hills of County Down, the club is well-known as being the home of its most famous member, PGA Professional Rory McIlroy who joined at the tender age of 8 years old. This picturesque 18-hole parkland course with a cutting-edge golf performance centre and stunning clubhouse facility boasts some of the best views of Belfast.

Holywood’s front nine holes present an easy walk and plenty of room for golfers to spray it a bit off the tee. The back nine, however, is laid out on different terrain with elevation changes and challenges all the way. It’s here where the splendour of Belfast Lough and the city can be viewed. When playing holes 10 through 14 you can enjoy the views of the Belfast docklands where Titanic was built. Indeed, many people gathered here to watch the famous ship set sail. The difficult 12th hole is said to be the toughest of them all. It requires a long accurate tee shot down the left side and a second shot over the rugged terrain to an elevated green. Then at the par 4 14th hole, you will have to negotiate the quarry and fairway bunkers to make a par. Get through this difficult stretch and you’ll have a score worth talking about. Its length is not challenging but as Rory states, “it has all the traits that develop your game from playing it regularly”.

If you’ve got the energy and want to pack in a much as possible on your visit, Belfast is half an hour away and luxury 4-star, Ten Square Hotel in the heart of the city is the perfect place to stop off and relax for an hour or two before taking a Belfast Black Cab Tour with Blue Badge driver and guide, Billy Scott.

Regularly working with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board as well as other major tour operators such as Tourism Ireland, you won't find a better tour in the city. Vast experience of dealing with tourism requirements of all kinds and Blue Badge status - acknowledged as the highest standard of achievement both nationally and internationally - ensure that each guide is trained and examined to the highest level of knowledge and guiding skills.

At the height of the industrial revolution, Belfast was the global epicentre of the Irish linen industry, tobacco production, rope making and ship building. In the comfort of a Black Taxi, discover a resurgent, dynamic capital. Explore modern Belfast’s diverse charms, hidden secrets, and emerging quarters. Taking this tour is time well spent.

After your tour it’s time for dinner at multi award winning Deanes Meat Locker. Pioneered by Michael Deane who has held a Michelin star for 13 years and the longest in Ireland, Michael has revolutionised the eating out scene in Belfast. With a total of seven restaurants to his name, he and his team of chefs provide the best quality, best value, locally sourced food, cooked to perfection with flair and imagination and you will not be disappointed.

Back to Ten Square for the night and to recharge your batteries, combining a relaxed atmosphere in elegant surroundings with a warm and genuine welcome. Renowned locally and nationally for its unique and unbeatable location, this hotel offers bespoke accommodation packages to suit all occasions and events and is also the perfect place to stay for a fun city break. The hotel has a total of 131 guest rooms and suites to suit any budget.

Galgorm Castle Golf Club & Estate in County Antrim is 30 minutes away from Belfast and is Northern Ireland’s premier tournament venue. Internationally acclaimed, this beautiful 18-hole, par-72 championship course covers 220 acres of lush parkland and hosts the ISPS Handa World Invitational presented by Modest! Golf. and was the chosen venue for the 2020 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. It has also hosted the Northern Ireland Open for over a decade. The ISPS Handa World Invitational was the first event of its kind in Europe and took place at Galgorm Castle and Massereene Golf Club in 2019. It was transformed into a new global event for men and women professionals in 2019. This progressive move was made possible when ISPA HANDA and long-time partners of the NI Open, Modest! Golf, engaged with organisers and bought in to the long-term vision for this unique event. This event welcomed men and women playing the same golf courses, at the same time, competing for equal prize money. A truly outstanding venue and perfectly situated in the heart of the historic Galgorm Estate, it is the gateway to the stunning Antrim coast and is bordered by the rivers Main and Braid, together with a magnificent oxbow feature and five impressive lakes. The perfect choice for those looking for a golf break with a difference. The castle itself was built in 1618 by Sir Faithful Fortescue and there can be no more inspiring setting for your golfing requirements.

The 245-acre estate boasts so much more than world class golf with a full range of activities and amenities. Consistently rated as one of the best championship courses in the leading industry golf publication rankings such as the Irish Golfer Magazine, Galgorm Castle is also a former Parkland Course of the Year winner at the annual Irish Golf Tour Operator Association awards. It is a truly unique golfing Centre of Excellence with some of the best coaching and practice facilities in Northern Ireland.

After the excitement of playing at such a wonderful venue, make sure you have some lunch before departing for a stay at the unmissable, multi-award-winning Bushmills Inn in Bushmills Village. Going via Ballymoney and approximately 45 minutes away in Co. Antrim, this internationally renowned four-star boutique hotel is highly recommended by Tourism Northern Ireland and its enviable location means it is a stone’s throw away from many popular visitor attractions including The Giant’s Causeway, Old Bushmills Distillery, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Dunluce Castle, Royal Portrush and many of the Game of Thrones filming locations. This is where the car comes in handy and because the attractions are so close to each other, this is the perfect opportunity for some sightseeing.

Steeped in history, the Bushmills Inn with its beautiful grounds and stunning architecture is the perfect retreat for those who crave the unconventional, yet still expect exceptional service. Visitors can step back to a time full of charm. From inglenook turf fires to hayloft snugs as well as a secret library, there is something to find

behind every door; the welcome is warm and the fire always lit. Although modern facilities have been installed, the fabulous rooms have been lovingly restored to pay homage to its rich Irish History.

Originally built as a Coaching Inn in the early 1600s, The Inn quickly became a haven for saddle sore visitors on their way to the Giant’s Causeway - it was here they would stop to sample the whiskey from the Bushmills Distillery which made this charming village internationally famous. The main part of the restaurant used to be the coach house and stables of the original Coaching Inn and forms the oldest part of the Hotel, probably dating back close in time to 1608 when ‘Old Bushmills’ was granted the world’s first ever licence to distil whiskey making it home to the world’s oldest whiskey distillery. The main Hotel, however, was built in the 1820s as part of a major redevelopment of the town by the local landowner and whose descendants still live locally. Extensive development works have taken place over the years bringing it to its current status of 41 beautifully appointed and individually designed guest rooms and it has all the facilities you would expect from a major hotel.

Since its opening, the Bushmills Inn has come to epitomise the true spirit of Ulster hospitality and it continues to win many esteemed awards for both the restaurant and the hotel.

With world ranked players as well as world class golf courses, Northern Ireland has much to be proud of and legendary Royal Portrush Golf Club is no exception. Holding a course record set by Rory McIlroy in his amateur days in the Northern Ireland Championship in 2005, he was playing off +4 handicap and shot a 61 (golfers will know exactly what this means) and you can still see his golf card displayed in the club cabinet. Thirty minutes from Bushmills and situated on the North Antrim Causeway Coast, Royal Portrush occupies a triangle of giant sand hills and is overlooked by the ruins of 13th century Dunluce Castle which gives its name to the course. The course was also home to the 148th Open Championship in 2019 and is on the rota for future tournaments. Interestingly, it first hosted the Open Championship in 1951 and it was the first ever not to be held on the Island of Great Britain. The open is the oldest of golf’s major championships. Portrush also hosted the Irish Open in 2012, the first in Northern Ireland since 1953.

The greens on this course are scattered among huge sand dunes gently raised above the Antrim coast and due to the nature of this course, only two golfers managed to break 70 during the entire tournament. Portrush’s most celebrated holes are the fifth and the sixteenth. The par 4 5th hole, White Rocks is one of the most exhilarating two-shots in golf. Overhit the second shot and your ball disappears into the Atlantic. The aptly names 16th hole, Calamity, requires total precision to carry the ball over an enormous ravine. Miss hit this one and you could be taking your next swing from at least fifty feet below the hole.

Another home-grown hero who hailed from Portrush and who likes to play at Dunluce when he is at home is Darren Clarke. Darren won the open at Royal St. George’s and was appointed as Europe’s team captain for the 2015 Ryder Cup. His trophy is on display at Royal Portrush Golf Club and Irish professional, Shane Lowrey won the 2019 Open Championship here.

Founded in 1888 and voted number 8 in the World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses, Golf Digest (2019 and 2020), Royal Portrush is a 36-hole private club which has two links Championship courses; the aforementioned Dunluce Course and the smaller but equally enjoyable Valley Course where former US Open Champion Graeme McDowell learnt his golf at an early age. Both command impressive views across the North Atlantic including breath taking views of the Southern Hebrides and County Donegal.

Nearby Giant’s Causeway is just one of the many visitor attractions not to be missed. Formed over 60 million years ago and the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption when molten lava cooled suddenly on contact with water, it is an awe-inspiring landscape of mostly interlocking hexagonal basalt columns. The tops of the columns form steppingstones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. If you look closely, you can see distinctive formations such as the Camel, the Wishing Chair and the Harp.

Conveniently situated at about three miles from Bushmills, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 and a national nature reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland. It was also named the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom in a 2005 pole of Radio Times readers. Much of the Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site is owned and managed by the National Trust and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland.

Leave Bushmills the following day for one last round of golf at Castlerock Golf Club in the seaside village of Castlerock before you depart from this enchanting and bewitching place.

Awarded Ireland’s ‘Hidden gem’ for Links Golf on the North Coast and just twenty minutes away from Portrush, Castlerock embodies all the essential charm of links golf and is a classic course set amid the towering dunes on the North Coast of Ireland. It not only boasts some stunning views down the coastline but proves to be a great test of traditional links golf.

Formed in 1901, the club has two golf courses onsite; the Mussenden Course which is the 18-hole championship course and the Bann Course which is situated on the banks of the River Bann.

The Mussenden was designed by legendary club makers Ben Sayers and Harry Colt, and it underwent significant renovations in 2017 and again in the winter of 2019 under the watchful eye of well-known golf designer, Martin Hawtree. With ten fully renovated holes, the course is a great test of golf for golfers of any level. Set amongst rolling sand dunes with scenic views of the River Bann out to the Atlantic and Donegal, Mussenden is considered to be one of the toughest links courses in the area. The greens are superb, and the well-placed bunkers are in pristine condition. With the renovations complete, 2021 is sure to be an exciting year for the club.

The Bann Course, although only nine holes, is still considered to be every bit of a test as its partner. It was described by Golf Getaways as one of the best 9-hole courses in the land. The course is not long, but very tight and has five par 4’s, three par 3’s and a par 5.

The restaurant and lounge at the club provides a great way to relax and enjoy some of the finest Irish hospitality before or after your round and its general Manager, Bert MacKay won the Ireland Golf Tour Operator Association Manager of the Year award in 2015.

Before your departure for the airport, squeeze in some lastminute sightseeing by visiting National Trust property Mussenden Temple which is located in the beautiful surroundings of Downhill Demesne near Castlerock in County Londonderry. There is much to explore in Downhill Demesne with its sheltered gardens and clifftop walks. Discover an unforgettable coastal landscape as you wander through the fascinating ruins of Downhill House and explore the clifftop route with its awe-inspiring views across the North Coast. Mussenden Temple (where the golf course gets its name from), perches dramatically on a 120-foot clifftop high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland and is one of Ireland’s most photographed places. Inspired by the Tivoli Temple of Vesta in Italy and once a former library, it offers spectacular views westwards over Downhill Strand towards Magilligan point and County Donegal. To the east Castlerock beach towards Portstewart, Portrush and Fair Head can be seen.

Visit 17th century Hezlett House which is a picturesque, thatched cottage located in Castlerock. Built around 1691, it is one of the oldest buildings still in use anywhere in Northern Ireland. The cottage is situated at the crossroads near the village.

Northern Ireland is the perfect mix of Links and Parkland golf courses. Home to the Golf Digest Number One Golf Course in the World, Royal County Down, its climate is soft and temperate meaning its good for golf pretty much all year round and it’s no wonder that it has forged a truly stellar reputation with its customers. Many of the courses have been accredited with a Golf Quality and Assurance award which is designed to certify quality assured golf which meets and exceeds customer expectations. These awards raise the bar when it comes to standards at golf clubs.

Offering fantastic value and with great access via direct flights into Belfast or Stena Line Ferries, accessing fairways in Northern Ireland has never been so simple. A golf break in Northern Ireland is a no-brainer for any golf fanatic and it is an excellent location.

However, it’s not all about seaside golf courses and there is a fantastic selection of top-class hospitality offering fantastic value in any region and wherever you choose to stay and play, everything is easily accessible and on your doorstep and don’t forget to visit the Titanic Belfast which is a monument to Belfast’s maritime heritage if that sort of thing floats your boat!
