ucked away in the strange little village that’s the Rustic Timber Centre on Witkoppen in Fourways, is Picolinos, a friendly pub/pizza parlour/beer garden/ farmyard/party venue/sports bar. It’s difficult to say exactly what the theme or concept of the space is, but a good description is probably “festival”.
with what you add, you can pay just over R100 for a massive, fully loaded pie. The pizzas are absolutely delicious and Picos – as it’s fondly called by addicted patrons – creates their own “red and green sauces” which are both hot and mild respectively and equally moreish. They’re also available to buy and take home at about R30 a bottle.
Long, plain wooden tables with plenty of shade – some covered by thatch umbrellas – are arranged on three different levels around the busy bar and the frenetic pizza oven station. In the outdoor section you’ll be able to watch ducks take to a little pond and if your dog is friendly and well socialised, you’ll be able to bring him/ her along too. A huge outdoor play area, the casual setting and Bambinos menu also make Picolinos a great spot for kids’ parties or fun Saturday afternoon out with the whole family.
Service is efficient given the sheer volume of drinks and dishes that are going out on an average Saturday and the ambience is festive and laidback. Add to the stress-free and fun feel of the place, the divine pizzas, and an ice-cold R&R from a jam jar, and you have yourself a winning excursion for any summer afternoon.
Once you’re settled at pretty much any table in the restaurant you’ll be able to spot a TV which is convenient for sport lovers and often after a big game there will be live music and even karaoke which can get quite loud and jolly as the sun goes down. The menu is extensive – everything from sushi to steaks, but it’s the pizza you really want to have a go at – especially if it’s your first time. When you’re ready to order, you’re given a small piece of paper that lists a huge variety of toppings you can add to various pizza sizes. If you’re clever

H
azendal Wine Estate has garnered plenty of attention over the past year, after a major revamp saw the historic farm reopening with a clutch of attractions that fuse the history of this Cape farm with the heritage of its Russian owners, the Voloshin family. Alongside Russian artworks in the Marvol Gallery, al fresco tables at the Babushka Deli, and the charming formality of the Russian Tea Garden, the wines of Hazendal are starting to perk up the palates of local wine lovers.
That’s largely thanks to Clarise SciocattiLangeveldt, who was appointed as winemaker and viticulturist in 2016. Since then she has overseen a major replanting of the Hazendal vineyards, and a revamp of the wine cellar. While she waits for Hazendal’s vineyards to reach maturity, she works with selected vineyards largely drawn from the surrounding Bottelary Hills. Working across a wide variety of cultivars, Clarise produces two ranges: the premium Hazendal range and everyday Christoffel Hazenwinkel range. “The wines in the Hazendal range are a little more upmarket, and definitely more complex. They’re made to be a bit more sophisticated,” says Clarise. The Bordeaux-style white blend of sauvignon blanc and semillon is one of the standouts, and a fine foil for the fine-dining dishes in Avant-Garde Restaurant that adjoins the cellar. The Bottelary Hills are highly regarded for chenin blanc and pinotage, but Clarise also taps into a handful of unusual cultivars not often bottled on their own. A single-varietal roussanne is already available from the tasting room, with a single barrel of carignan due for release soon. Complementing the Hazendal range is the trio of wines under the Christoffel Hazenwinkel label, named for the German settler who established Hazendal – the “Valley of the Hares” – in 1699. The Red and The White offer approachable blends, while the The Blanc de Noir from shiraz grapes is ideal for late-summer sipping. Wine tastings at the estate are offered in the elegant wine lounge, with the option to pair your tasting with zakuski of Russian-inspired tapas style. Charcuterie and cheese platters are also offered.
“We both love food – creating it and eating it,” says Laszlo. Ice cream is a particular favourite, which is why the friends – both of whom have backgrounds in the media and communications industries – decided to experiment with adding a dash of their favourite tipple. Easier said than done, however. Although making ice cream is a well-entrenched hobby for Willem – one he has indulged for 25 years – creating an alcohol infusion is no simple task, as alcohol affects the freezing process. Not that the pair were deterred. “We played around for a while, and when we finally nailed the recipe, we saw that our friends reacted well to it,” Laszlo recalls. That gave them the idea to start selling the product. “We picked the Moonshine name because it says what the product is, and because it’s a little outlaw. Our glass jar packaging, and our retro, rockabilly look and feel, flowed naturally from that.” This brand, which was dreamed up by Laszlo, has been an instant hit with consumers, who love the unique flavours and the ice cream’s
rich texture, as well as the highquality, sustainable glass packaging. Meanwhile, “mad scientist” Willem continues to work on the flavours. “This is a long, tedious process. We wanted to create original, threedimensional flavours that are unique to our brand and set Moonshine apart from any other premium brands.” To date, these include tequila orange cinnamon, chocolate chilli vodka, Irish coffee, vodka-infused vanilla and salted mealie brandy. The duo uses only natural flavours, with no artificial colourings, preservatives, thickeners or stabilisers – as Laszlo says, “just proper, old school dairy ice cream with a twist”. Just one year after its entry on the ice cream scene, Moonshine has been snapped up by a number of national retailers and Gauteng restaurants – but Willem and Laszlo have their sights set on expanding their icy empire further still, ensuring the brand is available throughout South African before moving on to international territories next year.

here are numerous reasons to employ climbers or creepers, but whether you want to soften a harsh surface, create a pretty scented arch through which to walk, or design a pattern for a wall, put in some homework to prevent heartache. “You’d be well advised to understand the plant and its needs,” says Carol Reid of Garden Green. “Ideally talk to your local nursery or garden guru about your specific area and what grows best there. Try to recreate its ideal environment.” Shade-loving climbers are somewhat limited in our sun-drenched country, but there are a handful which work well. “The word shade isn’t quite specific enough though,” says Reid, “because some creepers will grow in light or partial shade – so, they’re shade tolerant rather than loving – but prefer partial sun. Few are happy in dense shade, so if you’re keen to plant a creeper there, try to cut back trees or whatever is blocking the light, and you’re far more likely to have a healthy plant.” These are a few creepers and climbers which Reid suggests:
Jasmine
There are a number of different jasmine creepers, all scented and pretty, but some aren’t frost hardy, others prefer more sun. Star jasmine (jasminum multipartitum) and South African jasmine ( jasminum angulare) flower intermittently throughout the year. Confederate jasmine or star jasmine (trachelospermum jasminoides), with its beautiful dark green leaves and scented white flowers, is now available in a variegated, more low-growing variety.

occurs naturally on the Highveld and is a worthwhile addition to a bird garden. It can be grown over rocks as a creeper.
Clematis
There are numerous different forms of clematis, but our deciduous South African clematis bractiata will grow in light shade, and can reach a height of 5m if left unchecked. It can, however, easily be trained into a more formal growth on a trellis, and bears masses of dainty, scented, creamy white flowers during late summer and autumn. The flowers are followed by large, decorative seed heads. It’s commonly known as traveller’s friend.
WALL ART There’s no limit to the designs you can create, by either affixing 2D metal shapes like different sized rounds, or single strands, slightly proud of your wall. The more attention you’re prepared to pay the creeper, the more intricate the design you can achieve. The traditional criss-cross trellis shape – large or small – is easy to fit to the wall, and with not too much attention, creepers like jasmine follow the line. Just twist them round the wire every now and again to keep them neat. Evenly or unevenly spaced vertical lines – also work well, and if you play with colour, texture or patterns on the wall behind, interesting effects can result. If you enjoy a formal look, oversized pots in a row against a wall, can each contain their own creeper – affix a rectangular/round metal or wooden trellis, so you create a panelled effect.

This perennial, evergreen creeper climbs about 9m to 12m vertically, and 30m2 to 40m2 horizontally. It attaches itself to the wall or any porous surface, so bear that in mind… it’s a tenacious sucker, and if you choose to remove it, you’ll have your work cut out for you removing the vestiges of this creeper.
