Sisters Denielle and Inge van der Merwe started their business last year in the hope of brightening up lunchtime with creative gourmet food at affordable prices. Ever since, Everyday has been catering for everyday eating, which includes meals delivered to your office or home. Recently it has included services and events such as picnics, themed parties, workshops and even holidays and special days such as Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day. Inge keeps Everyday’s branding and marketing fresh and Denielle has a reputation for making a delicious jelly bean milkshake, as well as Milo and peanut butter milkshakes. We asked them to share two winter recipes you can easily make at home. Here is what they came up with.
Chilli Hot Chocolate
(4 small cup servings)
Ingredients: • 60g Lindt Excellence Chili Dark chocolate • 40g Lindt Excellence Ecuador 75% Dark chocolate • 125ml fresh cream and a bit extr a for whipping • 125ml milk • 1 tsp chilli flakes • 4 tots brandy (optional) Break the chocolate into small chun ks and place in a small saucepan on medium heat. Add the chilli flakes, milk and cream. Melt the mixture while stirring frequently until all the chocolate is melted. Reduce the heat and let the hot chocolate simm er, but be careful not to burn it. To add a bit of a kick , add the four tots of brandy. To top off your drink, whip the extra cream until it forms a peak and add a spoonful to your hot chocolate. Garnish with a few chilli flakes.

lowly but surely the capital city is on its way to being known not only for its purple splendour, but also for its beer. Various talented local Pretoria brewers have established themselves over the last five years, joining the likes of masters such as Drayman’s Brewery. Capital Craft – the well-known and loved restaurant and beer garden – is amplifying the city’s beer culture. This year Capital Craft will be hosting its fourth annual Capital Craft Beer Festival. By combining old traditions and new experiences it brings you a premium beer festival known for great music and even better beer.

The festival celebrates microbreweries and acknowledges the painstaking effort breweries invest in brewing and maturing specialist beers. More than 20 carefully selected specialist
craft beer brewers from all over the country will be offering tastings. The selection includes well-known names such as Jack Black’s Brewing Company, Aces Brew Worx, Devil’s Peak Brewing Company and Darling Brew. O
ne of the most noticeable trends in product design for the home at the moment, is reducing forms and silhouettes down to simple geometric shapes. This almost child-like design treatment often veers towards the avant-garde, but the news coming out of the top trade shows internationally is that this trend is poised to break into the mainstream soon. The thinking behind this trend is that people are tired of overwrought design and bored with minimalism. This happy medium approach sees creatives combining unusually simplistic forms together in a barebones approach to product design. The Dutch trend guru Li Edelkoort has already flagged the circle as the motif to watch in the coming few seasons, but it seems that they may only be one part of this design aesthetic. One of the key brands called out for this trend at the recent Salon del Mobile fair was the Italian studio Zanotta. Designs such as the Speed sideboard epitomise this geometric design, with an emphasis on super simplistic forms. And the trend has filtered into the discerning end of the local market too. The Solar Mirror by Okha, for example, is made up of backlit, overlapping circles and makes for a very contemporary geometric statement piece.

They mainly cater to couples who are either stuck in a rut, don’t have enough time, or lack creativity. By taking all the stress and hassle out of planning a date night, they allow the couple to experience the element of surprise and to be excited. Each month, they release new boxes with different themes to keep things interesting and to give their customers options. The date boxes will always contain something good, some food and something for the mood, and are delivered to your door. Q: How did your business start? A: I’ve always enjoyed making special and creative plans for date nights and giving friends some ideas for theirs. We realised there was a gap in the market for a concept like this, as people want instant gratification without any admin or hassle. They want everything to be as easy as possible, so why not outsource your date nights? Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We are an e-commerce business, but we are based in Centurion in Midstream Estate. This area is safe and we are centrally located for easy access to most of our suppliers.

Property investment is the biggest game changer in Cape Town’s CBD
P
roperty investment is one of the biggest game changers transforming the Cape Town central city, and so far this year seven new developments or redevelopments have been confirmed, at least three of them with a combined value of some R270m. The Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) has published the annual investment guide for the past four years, tracking the growth of various business and leisure sectors, as well as the rise of geographical nodes in the central city. Commenting on the rise of the
Foreshore node since 2012, the report’s editor and co-author, Carola Koblitz, noted the CCID’s first report recorded an investment value into the area of around R3,2bn, which included the development of projects such as Portside, Touchstone House, 22 Bree, Atlantic Centre, the Civic Centre update and the CTICC expansion. Koblitz says, “In 2012, we had yet to hear of investments such as Roggebaai Place, 33 Heerengracht, the Media24 upgrade, The Towers redevelopment, the Parkalot building, the upgrade to Southern Sun Water front, the KPMG building, the

redevelopment of Triangle House by Signatura, or even the new Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital. “These developments added almost R4,6bn to our original 2012 figures,” she says. Overall property values in the CBD have increased substantially. Rob Kane, chairman, CCID, says, “In 2006, the city’s official valuation of the downtown area sat at just over R6,1bn. By the 2014/15 financial year, this official valuation had risen to close to R24bn.

n tough times consumers naturally look at where they can cut back on spending. With household budgets under pressure, many people have to look at what they can do without to make ends meet. While it is important to scrutinise where your money is going, it’s also important to make the right decisions about what you can do without. Unfortunately many people take the high-risk option of reducing their insurance cover or even stopping the premiums altogether, and this can end up being far costlier in the long run. While it may be highly unlikely that your house and everything in it will go up in flames, it is vital that you consider what might happen if it did. Even if you suffered a break-in and lost a large chunk of your possessions, how would you replace them and how would your quality of life suffer? Insurance is one of those things that you can underestimate until you really need it. And if you don’t have it when it matters, the cost far outweighs anything you would have paid in premiums.
Instead of reducing their cover, many South Africans should actually be checking that they have enough insurance to sort things out if the worst were to happen. In hard times, the last thing you want is to be burdened with
even more financial stress because your insurance was inadequate. In order to make sure you are not underinsured, you should do the following:

Make sure that your property is insured for what it would cost to rebuild it, not its purchase price. The value may have appreciated significantly over time. This should be reviewed at least every year, and definitely after any renovations or home improvements.

Conduct a proper inventory of your household contents to estimate their replacement value. The cost to replace imported items in particular would have increased notably in recent years with the drop in the value of the rand. If your household contents are not insured for their full value, your insurer may not pay out the total claim.

Remember to insure individual items that leave the house regularly. This includes jewellery, expensive sporting equipment or electronic gadgets like tablets or laptops. If these are stolen outside of your house, they may not be covered if they haven’t been specified on your policy.
