t the start of the year I mentioned that one of my goals was to improve my garden space. Well, I had no idea what I was getting myself into! The El Niñostyle weather patterns have not made it easy. If it’s not the raging heat threatening to make my new plants wither, then it’s the wild wind trying to lift them off the ground. Gardening has tested my patience and endurance to keep things alive. Joseph Santina originally invented the Brandy Crusta in New Orleans in 1852 while working at the Jewel of the South. This citrusy drink was the forerunner of the Sidecar and Margarita.
The Hurricane was originally invented in New Orleans by bartender Louis Culligan. The legendary Pat O’Brien’s bar happened to be overstocked with rum. O’Brien quickly solved the problem with The Hurricane.
New Orleans barman Henry Ramos invented the Ramos Gin Fizz, originally called the New Orleans Fizz, in 1888. The drink rarely is on cocktail menus outside New Orleans.

Shake together the Die Mas potstill brandy, liqueur, lemon juice, syrup, and bitters in a cocktail shaker filled with ice until chilled – about 15 seconds. Strain into a chilled cordial glass. Submerge lemon peel in cocktail and serve.
Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and add plenty of crushed ice. Shake well and pour, unstrained, into a large glass. Garnish with orange slice and a cherry.

60ml Inverroche Classic Gin 15ml fresh lemon juice 15ml fresh lime juice One egg white 30ml heavy cream Two teaspoons superfine sugar Half a teaspoon of orange blossom water (can be substituted with orange zest, orange liqueur or vanilla extract) • Ice • Soda water Place the gin, lemon juice, lime juice, egg white, cream, sugar, and orange blossom water into a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for two minutes. Add a handful of ice to the cocktail shaker and shake again until the outside of the canister looks frosty. Strain the mixture into a chilled glass without ice. Top off with soda water.

Adriaan Maree brings to the table a wealth of experience with a CV that includes some of the best local and international restaurants such as Grande Provence, Rust en Vrede, Roots, Wild Honey and Michelin star restaurant Hibiscus in London. Having learnt from great chefs such as Peter Tempelhoff and Claude Bosi, it is no wonder that he was appointed executive chef and selected as a young master chef to keep an eye on in 2013.

Bringing together all of his talent, experience and passion, the Fermier Restaurant was born. The menu consists of a seven-course set menu that includes a flurry of seasonal textures and flavours. The menu allows for changes in terms of availability of ingredients and produce according to season. With first and second servings of

meat, it’s not only the tender cuts that are used, but rather the whole animal. This shows that the menu is also an extension of the restaurant’s holistic approach to produce. Expect to find beautifully plated modern cuisine served in a riveting way that will leave you wanting more.
The restaurant
It all started with a vision and a few lines in the sand at the back of the Karoo property. Not only was Adriaan involved in the building of the restaurant, his vision along with Karoo Yard owner John du Raan extended to using what they had available on the premises. Fermier’s walls have risen from rammed earth taken from the Karoo property - a conscious way of building where you make use of what earth has been dug up. Fermier’s crockery is handmade by Elza van Dijk, who runs her pottery studio from Karoo Square. Even the tables and chairs were crafted a few metres away from where the building has risen, making not only for a beautiful space but also one with character.

etallics are interesting colours to track when it comes to home trends. Unlike paint colours and other surface trends, metallics usually straddle the line between aesthetic and construction. They don’t just speak to how something looks, but how it’s made too. That’s why when it comes to the current trends towards golds, bronzes and coppers, we can see how they say something deeper about our collective mind-set and not just passing fashion. In a world where so much of what we interact with is clean and minimal, from our technology to our cars and our clothing, metallics are emphatically of the earth. They signify preciousness and permanence – especially the new breed of burnished and heirloom-inspired finishes. Current metallics speak to craft and
heritage. They give our world depth where so much is about the superficial. So it’s no surprise then that we’re seeing metallics pop up in all kinds of interesting areas. From the expected places like lighting and plumbing through to finishes on products like ceramics and other decor, precious metallics help to give depth to our homes. The approach is even being seen in statement appliances like KitchenAid’s newly launched champagne gold colour option, giving the iconic mixer a glimmering update. This new focus on precious metallics has a much broader appeal than previous incarnations of the trend. These are not the bling and opulent (and often divisive) tones of the early 2000s. They are more about creating modern heirlooms than showing off wealth, and that desire for a sense of permanence is something that everyone can relate to.

Rate hike means a bumpy ride for property
T
he recent repo rate hike of 50 basis points comes as no surprise, says Samuel Seeff, chairman, Seeff group. “Consumers should be aware that this is the first of more hikes to follow.” According to him, affordability will be the key theme for the property market. “Buyers will be looking closely at prices and driving a hard bargain,” Seeff adds. Looking at the rate hike pragmatically, Andrew Golding, CEO, Pam Golding Property Group, says that although house price growth has slowed, nominal prices are currently at record highs of about R1,386m, while the real price, which takes inflation into account, is just 10% off its record highs before the 2007 crisis. “We have a rapidly growing, young

population for whom there is insufficient housing, so there is little reason to expect house prices to fall outright.” Herschel Jawitz, CEO, Jawitz Properties, says, “The 50 basis points mean an increase in repayments of R165 per month per R500,000 of bond. This may not seem significant at first glance, but when added to the previous rate hike it begins to add up.”

Clairwood Logistics Park in KZN gets the green light
C
onstruction of the R3,5bn Clairwood Logistics Park will commence soon, creating employment and business opportunities within the South Durban Basin. KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Michael Mabuyakhulu gave the project the go-ahead after his department found that the amended Environmental Impact Report (EIR) received from the Capital Property Fund in September 2014, complied with stringent regulations and adequately addressed concerns raised during an appeal. The Clairwood Logistics Park will be located on the site of the former Clairwood Race Course which was purchased by the then Capital Property
Fund (now Fortress Income Fund) in 2012 for R430m. Fortress Income Fund intends developing approximately 350,000m2 of warehousing with the remainder becoming paved yards to service the facilities. The development will also include an 8ha wetland which will be fully rehabilitated.

A: Because I’m renting a spot inside the hair salon, the renting price is a lot better compared to someone who would have to pay the rent all by themselves. Q: What is your shop footprint? ife insurance is a difficult subject. Not only does it require you to consider your own mortality, but it also means having to put some sort of a value on what you are worth. It can be difficult to think about your family carrying on without you, but that is exactly what has to be done when thinking about whether you need life insurance and how much you might need. If you have anyone who depends on you financially, whether that is children, a spouse, parents or siblings, then life insurance is critical. Life insurance guarantees that your death won’t leave your dependants in financial trouble. It’s not about paying for your funeral or having some money to buy something nice to cheer them up, but about ensuring that they can meet all their financial obligations without your income.
