n the heart of the Hazeldean Valley is an old dairy farm that has been converted into a unique gathering spot for lovers of the artisanal movement. The Cowhouse Market offers guests a regular hangout to experience a farm setting without leaving Pretoria. We chat with cofounder Louis Venter to find out more. Q: How did your business start? A: During a braai, we (Louis Venter, James Waugh and William Waugh), with numerous babysitting

hours logged, had a discussion on how quickly parents run out of fun activities and places to take their kids. We approached William's dad, restaurateur James Waugh, and started our extensive market research, visiting 40 markets countrywide. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: This area has so much to offer. Fitness junkies can enjoy mountain biking and running trails with Hazeldean Valley Trails, while dog lovers bring their four-legged friends out for the fun. Our venue is also the perfect farm experience for entertaining the young ones with pony rides, jumping castles, our famous duck race, the scavenger hunt, kiddies’ bike park and an early-evening outdoor cinema. A: The venue is ideal because it presents families and their dogs with the opportunity to enjoy an outdoor experience without having to leave Pretoria. It’s also perfect as a great variety of activities can be offered.

We’ve recently added new picnic sites to the venue, as well as a unique wedding and private function space. We're also expanding our operating hours with new event additions. You’ll be amazed how you can fit a bathroom, or rather a shower room, into the tiniest space WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

W

hether it’s a guest room, teenage pad or self-catering room you plan to let out, adding a shower room (no matter how small it is) adds value to a property. Plumbing is clearly important, but it’s always achievable; it’s just more about cost than capability. You’re not going to create a glorious oasis here, but you can give the room’s inhabitant more privacy and independence. It’s a question of how to configure the limited space, avoid water splashing and wetting everything, add ventilation, and make it feel less claustrophobic.

The tiny bathroom

This is about functionality, so keep it simple. A small bathroom needs features that make the space seem bigger, such as a mirror, clear floors, reflective tile colours like white or clear mosaics, or, if you can, a skylight. Your budget will dictate certain elements, but shop around for fittings – the array of small-space fittings available today is breathtaking. A wet room is a great, functional idea. This is a bathroom where the shower is open or set behind a single wall – its floor is level with the rest of the room and the water drains away

through an outlet on the floor. Not only does it allow you to make use of architectural quirks in a room’s shape which might otherwise be wasted space, but it’s also well waterproofed. One opinion is that the smallest practical wet room size is 1,5m x 1m, with enough space for a shower, toilet and wash basin. An important consideration is the shower splash radius. Installing a hinged or static glass partition will control the amount of water splash. Wet rooms are generally easier to clean, particularly if there’s no shower screen, because there’s no shower tray and the sink and toilet are wall-mounted. Floating elements like a wallmounted toilet and basin will always make the space seem bigger, so they have a dual purpose. Waterproofing in a wet room is everything, and best done by an experienced professional. Tanking is the process of waterproofing the floor and walls of a room. The usual wall and floor covering is tiles, but talk to the experts. Of equal importance are the various processes which ensure the floor has the correct gradient to channel water to the drain.
