ome to the world-renowned Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga’s Lowveld is considered to be one of South Africa’s top inland holiday destinations. Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit)

Located on the Crocodile River Mpumalanga’s capital, Mbombela, is a beautiful city with subtropical vegetation, leafy hills and valleys and a host of modern amenities. Among its key tourist attractions is the Lowveld National Botanical Garden, which is home to a rare collection of plant species, a man-made rainforest and the Mafunyane Riverside Water Park at the comprehensive Riverside Mall close to the Emnotweni Casino. Mbombela also hosts the popular Innibos music festival, which attracts more than 100,000 visitors annually.

Barberton

Situated in De Kaap Valley and bordered by the Makhonjwa Mountains, Barberton was established during the 1880s gold rush. It’s best known for having some of the oldest exposed rocks on earth and offers an array of hiking trails, 4x4 routes, birding routes and an abundance of wildlife. Be sure to visit the Stopforth and Belhaven House museums as well as the Barberton Museum, which superbly portrays the history of the area. White River

White River serves as the region’s farming community and produces timber, flowers, tropical fruit and vegetables. Given its proximity to the Kruger National Park and the Crocodile River Valley, White River is also a popular holiday town. Some of its special offerings include orange wine tasting at Rottcher Wineries, Tilly’s Handmade Candles and Glass, the White River History and Motor Museum, and the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre known for its charming shops and eateries. Hazyview

Besides being located about 10km from the Phabeni Gate of the Kruger National Park, the little town of Hazyview boasts a large number of private game reserves to its northeast. Sabie

The forestry town of Sabie is situated on the banks of the Sabie River in the picturesque Drakensberg escarpment. The area is home to a number of breathtaking waterfalls, including the Sabie Falls, which lies under a bridge on the town’s outskirts. The town is also known for its multiple delightful restaurants and coffee shops, as well as arts and crafts establishments. The natural environment accommodates a rich diversity of plant and mammal species including the elusive black leopard.

eandri le Roux has always felt the need to help people accomplish their goals. After working as an English teacher to students from all over the world, and being exposed to many different writing styles, she decided to start Edititonline. She tells us about her business based in Muckleneuk.

A: A s I work from home, I already had the premises. I had an open room, with a lovely view, which I converted into my office, so I actually found the premises before I started my business. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: I’m close to all the highways and major roads, fairly close to many of my clients and I don’t need to pay for additional office space. And again, I don’t have to commute to work in the morning!

Q: How did your business start? A: I started Edititonline after leaving my previous employment. I made the daunting decision to start my own business in order to follow my passion – working with languages and reading for a living. I’d already had a small client base built up from freelance work that I’d done, making the transition much easier.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: A s it’s a residential area, my neighbours are residential property owners.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I decided on Muckleneuk as this is where I live. I can work from

Q: Do you operate online as well? A: With a great internet connection, I mostly work online. I do go out to clients, or they come to see me, but it’s just so much easier to send an email. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Currently, I do a lot of editing – academic and corporate, but mostly for corporate clients.

Western Cape's Val de Vie sees increase in sales

W

hile the South African property market appears to be taking strain, Val de Vie Estate in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley is reaping benefits from its investors. Ryk Neethling, marketing director and shareholder, Val de Vie, says, “Having sold in excess of R2bn worth of developer stands over the past few years places us in a favourable position with an exceptional increase in property value year on year.” Over the past 24 months Val de Vie has sold: • A ll 162 Stefan Antoni-designed plot and plan units in The Vines development. • A ll 60 Stefan Antoni-designed

luxury apartments in the Polo Village development. • A ll 17 estate smallholdings (3ha-5ha). • A ll 64 stands in the Le Domaine neighbourhood. • A ll 72 plot and plan units at The Vines at Le Domaine. • A ll of the Pearl Valley Hotel sectional title hotel and rental pool (operated by Mantis Group). • A 3,000m2 stand on Champion’s Field for a record R12m. In total, more than 500 developer stands and properties were sold. On average, home prices increased from R18,000/m2 to R24,000/m2 and land price for Val de Vie Phase 1 increased

from R1,900/m2 to R2,500/m2. In Pearl Valley, amalgamated with Val de Vie in 2016, land prices increased from R900/m2 to R2,600/m2. The estate has a diverse property portfolio ranging from developer stands, lockup-and-go apartments and family homes to top-end R100m houses. Evergreen at Val de Vie is a mature lifestyle community, launching at the end of 2017. This development brings together SA’s top retirement brand and premier lifestyle estate. Demand is high – Phase 1 at Val de Vie is 95% sold and Phase 2, excluding Evergreen Retirement Village, 85% sold.

Mpumalanga’s Phola Mall opens to service local community

T

he end of September saw the grand opening of Phola Mall, the first fully enclosed regional shopping mall in the old “KwaNdebele” region of Mpumalanga. Located in Phola Park, within the bustling area of KwaMhlanga and with direct access off the infamous Moloto Road, the 29,000m² mall is ideally located to service the massive rural population that surrounds it.

Anchored by Superspar, Edgars, Shoprite, a Builders Superstore and boasting a strong line-up of fashion tenants, banks and food stores, Phola Mall promises to become the new centre of the greater community. As is becoming a signature of McCormick Property Development (MPD) projects, the mall offers more than just shopping facilities. Two action soccer

courts, numerous rest areas, a kids’ play area and wall murals by internationally recognised Ndebele artist, Esther Mahlangu, all contribute to the “gathering place” that the mall has become. “We want our communities to connect with their malls,” says Jason McCormick, MD, MPD. “By instilling a sense of pride and attachment to the mall, we’re able to give back in more ways than one.”

Private Property takeover bid by P24 will not proceed

P

rivate Property has announced the conclusion of a deal which will see a change in ownership from the existing shareholder, OAM, which is an American private equity controlled company, to a consortium of committed South African buyers, including listed media giant, Caxton. Other buyers include industry participants with a deep understanding of the market. The deal is subject to Competition Commission approval and is expected to be finalised by the end of October 2017. The proposed takeover bid by Property24 parent company, Naspers, will not proceed. The new deal was concluded with the assistance of the industry body, Real Estate Business Owners of South Africa (Rebosa).

The transaction, once it has navigated the regulatory hoops, will usher in a new era for the property portal. “Private Property has grown strongly in the past three years, achieving excellent results as a digital platform and now holds a significant position in the South African market. We’re really pleased that we could conclude a deal that maintains our independence and affords us the opportunity to enhance the role that technology can play in the real estate industry,” said Simon Bray, CEO, Private Property. “This is good news for everybody. For Private Property, we get to keep doing what we’re passionate about: building a great service for property shoppers. For the industry, it ensures a vibrant competitive environment with at least two big platforms offering advertising services.”
