urrounded by the sandstone cliffs of the Rooiberg mountain range, offering spectacular views of the majestic Maluti Mountains and the purpleblue slopes of the Drakensberg mountains in the distance, the little town of Clarens in the eastern Free State has become one of South Africa’s most adored destinations for a getaway or a second home.

Mid-winter, when light snowfall turns the village and surrounding mountains into a fantasy wonderland, the town is reminiscent of the beautiful hamlet of Clarens in Switzerland, where President Paul Kruger spent the last six months of his life in voluntary exile before he died of heart failure in 1904. When the South African town of Clarens was established in 1912, it was named after the Swiss town. The town, with its untarred streets lined with Poplar and Willow trees, beautiful sandstone buildings, open spaces and fresh country air, offers an idyllic escape for urbanites from places such as KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Free State.
Clarens provides basic daily shopping, business and medical facilities, while more extensive amenities are available in the neighbouring town of Bethlehem. A mixture of properties, generally in good to superb condition, are available in and around Clarens. These range from sectional title townhouse units to beautifully renovated freestanding homes and luxurious upmarket family dwellings in the Clarens Golf and Leisure Estate or the Clarens Mountain Estate. Farms and commercial properties are also available.
Clarens lies between the town of Bethlehem (40km north) and the Caledonspoort Border Post shared with Lesotho (42km south) and is 300km from Johannesburg, 360km from Pretoria, 285km from Bloemfontein and 380km from Durban. The town’s village square, with its many art galleries, coffee shops, pubs and craft shops (a knife maker’s shop and a craft brewery), is a huge tourist attraction and can get really busy over weekends and holidays. However, the surrounding residential areas are barely affected by the bustle in the square and remain tranquil.
NATURE NEARBY: • The Mallen Walk: a moderate trail ascending to a contour path with amazing views (1,5 hours). • The Spruit Walk: an easy route along a stream passing through part of indigenous Oldwood forest (30 minutes). • The Scilla Walk: moderate route best to walk in spring when masses of blue Scilla flowers cover the sandstone cliffs (1 hour). • The Maluti Viewpoint: an easy walk best done late afternoon to view the sunset over the mountains (30 minutes).
THINGS TO DO: • Drive through the Golden Gate Highlands National Park (20km away). • Visit the Basotho Cultural Village (45km away). • Ride in a hot-air balloon and enjoy magnificent views over the region. • Book a one-day river rafting trip on the Ash River outside Clarens.

M
anon Benadé fell in love with the Karoo Cafe and knew that it would be the perfect spot for her business for handmade leather shoes. Q: How did your business start? A: I love making things and I eventually started making shoes. I studied at the University of Pretoria and then started my own business in April 2006, but stopped for a few years while I travelled overseas. I did a shoe apprenticeship in the UK and a short intensive shoe course in 2008. I then opened my store with a new business logo in June 2016. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: The Willows is a great suburb with schools and shops close by, which is ideal if you work and live in the same area. It’s the perfect area to set up a new business as Lynnwood Road is easily accessible to a variety of areas. I also really loved the Karoo Cafe, as it has an amazing creative vibe. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I’ve always known about the Karoo Cafe and thought it would be a great idea to start a shoe
business there. I approached the management at the cafe in June last year when I saw a sign outside advertising space on the premises. I left my details and they called me in April with a space for my store. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The property is situated on a plot with various buildings used for different small businesses. It has a real studio, factory feel, where you can get your space messy, but still has the retail aspect. It’s alright to mess up the floors, as they are meant for manufacturing. The property has all the necessities such as three-phase electricity and plenty of parking. It attracts plenty of people for various reasons, whether going to the hairdresser, buying pottery, visiting the restaurant, having framing done or browsing furniture. The cafe next door is also perfect for when I need lunch or a coffee. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: My neighbour is the Elza van Dijk Pottery Studio. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: The store rental is really affordable. You can get a spot
for between R3,000 and R6,000 per month depending on the size of the space you require. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: I have between five and 20 people a day with many being international visitors. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I don’t have any yet. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: No, the store is too busy and too small at the moment to start operating online. Q: What's your most popular item? A: Our handmade leather shoes ranging from R600 to R1,800 are our most popular products. I’m currently working on producing leather boots and vegetable-tanned shoes, which are set to be favourites too.
