A

lois Hugo Nellmapius, a prominent businessman and pioneer in the late 1800s, renamed his farm Doornkloof to Irene Estate after his daughter Irene (derived from the Greek word meaning “peace”). Irene was proclaimed a town in 1902. Over the years the area has retained its peace, quiet and farm-like look and feel. More than a century after it was proclaimed a town, and after much growth and development of the greater Centurion area, Irene remains a charming hamlet. Residential options include living in the original village which has a lot of character with its graceful older houses, beautiful stone chapel and historical treasures like the Jan Smuts House Museum, the Irene Concentration Camp cemetery and the Irene Dairy Farm, which is still operational. Although fenced off for maximum security and privacy, living in Irene Security Estate still feels like living on a farm in the middle of the city. In addition to the many open spaces surrounding the village it also includes The Oval, a central recreational area where children can play and families can enjoy picnics and walk their dogs.

Irene is the ideal area for suburban family life. Q: How did your business start? A: Ivory Manor was originally a family home. After enjoying the splendour of the lush gardens and beautiful surroundings for 10 years, we realised we needed to share this special place with more people. This is where the dream of Ivory Manor was born.

Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Owing to the fact that we’re uniquely situated in a residential area, there are no other hotels to compare with. Our closest retail areas are Woodlands Mall, Parkview and Menlyn.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Ivory Manor has the most brilliant location at 280 Jochem Street, Rietvalleirand. It’s easily accessible from all airports, major highways and the city centre, while still offering a unique country feeling. There are also very few competitors in the area, and we saw the opportunity to establish a unique five-star boutique hotel which offers an unforgettable experience with each visit. Q: How did you find your premises? A: T he land was acquired by the family 14 years ago. It’s prime real estate: a 1ha plot of land in the fast-developing east of Pretoria.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Ivory Manor is currently the only five-star rated, familyowned boutique hotel in Pretoria East. The property is located in a very exclusive and private residential suburb, close to the Rietvlei Dam Nature Reserve, adding to the relaxed country feeling with a touch of luxury.

Q: How many people go through your hotel each day? A: Many businesses regularly use our premises and facilities to host conferences, from 30 to 100 delegates at a time. We also pride ourselves in the many small, intimate events and celebrations that are very popular in our lush garden settings. We host many stork teas, special birthday celebrations, christenings and weddings for 10 to 50 guests at a time. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, we are currently planning Phase 2 in the development of Ivory Manor – expanding on our current offering of rooms and conference venues. Q: Do you operate online as well? South Africa’s most technologically advanced casino floor opens

T

he country’s second-largest and most technologically advanced casino floor at Sun International’s Time Square in Menlyn, Pretoria has just been completed and is open to the public. The casino floor spans 7,530m 2 on two levels and has 2,000 slot machines and 60 tables. The time-themed, futuristically designed casino will feature over 988 digital screens which will be optimised to generate evolving mind and mood experiences.

The Time Square complex, being built by Sun International to the tune of R4bn, will be completed in three phases, with the first phase comprising the casino and restaurant zones completed. November 2017 will see the opening of the stateof-the-art 8,500-seater arena. The only venue of its kind in Pretoria, the arena will host international and local concerts, exhibitions and lifestyle events. The 22-storey luxury hotel will open in early 2018.

Cape Town’s highest residential building home to new Radisson Blu

R

adisson Blu has announced the opening of a new Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence in Cape Town. This is Carlson Rezidor’s 10th hotel in operation in South Africa. “Our 10th hotel opening in South Africa is firm proof of our focus on expanding in Africa. Today, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group has 34 hotels in operation and under development on the African continent. The Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence Cape Town is also our first mixeduse property in South Africa, made up of fully fledged upper-upscale hotel apartments, showcasing the diversity of our designer portfolio,” says Marc Descrozaille, area vice president: Africa and Indian Ocean, The Rezidor Hotel Group.

The hotel is currently the highest residential building in the Mother City and is situated on the corner of Riebeeck Street and Long Street in the Foreshore. The 214-room hotel residence is within walking distance of all the city’s main tourist attractions and just a kilometre away from the CTICC. Pretoria East property and rental boom as Menlyn Maine develops

T

he unfolding development in the east of Pretoria is boosting the demand for property and rentals, with areas such as Menlyn fast becoming hot property. With the R2,5bn redevelopment of Menlyn Mall and progress of the development of Menlyn Maine, Africa’s first green city, this part of the city is now one of the fastest growing in Gauteng. Gerhard van der Linde, MD, Seeff Pretoria East, says that large sections of Menlyn Maine have been completed and are already in use. This means more job seekers and economic opportunities, and in turn more opportunities for property and further development. The Menlyn Maine development includes commercial, retail and leisure space, a gymnasium, residential apartments, a hotel,

entertainment complex and scenic parklands. It’s widely regarded as the “Sandton City” of Pretoria. Van der Linde says that interest in the area is high. The close proximity to the ambassadorial belt suburbs such as Waterkloof adds to the attraction. Seeff agent, Jacques Germishuys, says that demand in areas such as Garsfontein, Menlo Park, Alphen Park, Newlands, Constantia Park and Ashlea Gardens has skyrocketed. He says properties are being upgraded, further adding to the demand, and stock is in short supply. Securing a rental is now fairly difficult and quite competitive, and sellers are achieving premium prices. Dulcie Oosthuizen, another Seeff agent, says the area is seeing a number of new upmarket apartment developments that are now fetching monthly rentals of R12,000 to R15,000.

N

ot everybody has the luxury of an expansive, exclusive patio, and even those who do are looking to make that little, often awkward and cluttered space look more attractive. It can work well when the weather makes the other side of the home uninhabitable, and can be made into a more relaxed, family space. It can be hard-wearing, quirky, covered or uncovered – whatever takes your fancy (and budget). It’s certainly a plus when the time comes to market your home. You can make the space look better with very little cash. Do it yourself if you have the time and the inclination, and if you enjoy an eclectic mix, get odd pieces of furniture from friends and relatives and give them a new lease of life. Always plan first. Look at the space, work out precisely what you need and, as with indoor decorating, measure the size of the furniture needed. If you’re starting from scratch, begin with the floor. Consider decking, large concrete pavers or a simple concrete slab. If it’s a small area, keep it clean with large monotone elements so the space appears bigger. Floating seating, like a suspended slatted bench, works well, as does a concrete bench. A low concrete table and side server also work

well – they’re waterproof, organiclooking, monotone and easy to clean. Make sure you have a covered space to store cushions. Look at the walls, creepers, murals, mirrors, lattice work, and, if you have enough sunlight, consider a herb wall. You could also put in succulents. A growing wall works wonderfully here, whether it’s the full monty, a panel, or shelves on which you position pot plants. Oversized planters also work well; position them well, choose maintenance-free plants with a graphic look and uplight them. Decorate as you would indoors, but be practical. Keep your framework simple – wood, concrete or metal – and, if you want to introduce botanicals or colour, do it in your cushions, throws or large pots. If your space is small, consider sticking to plain cushions such as bull denim slipcovers. A fixed or moveable fire pit or fireplace of some kind is a real conversation piece or meditative space just for you – something separate from your braai. Firelight is a wonderful moodsetter, but don’t neglect other types of lighting, such as solar fairy lights, tiny wall lights or large jar solar lights. If it’s doable, consider fitting an extendable awning.
