hen celebrating there’s nothing quite like bubbly. But knowing the basics can go a long way when choosing which kind to buy.
Champagne
Champagne is wine from the Champagne region in France made according to the Methode Champagnoise with three specific varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The ashen earth of the Champagne region produces a steely structure in sparkling wine that has not been replicated anywhere in the world. Champagne comes with an expensive price tag and the labels on French Champagne rarely state what method is used since it is the only method used. The only other style that will appear on the label is Charmat, which is a bulk process that produces flavourful Champagne.
South African bubbles
There’s a variety of excellent quality sparkling wines available in South Africa. Local winemakers have their own unique name: MCC, short for Methode Cap Classique, which is similar to Champagne in terms of how it’s made, the longevity and quality of the bubbles. Like Champagne, MCC is fermented in the bottle and it is considered the best quality local sparkling wine. Aside from MCC there are quite a few sparkling wines available – wine that has been fermented under pressure in a tank. A major plus for South African bubbly is the price tag. You’ll be able to enjoy a great bottle of sparkling wine at a reasonable price compared to the real deal.

any coffee lovers have visited duo Kevin and Rebeca Clark’s non-profit coffee shop, Vintage Coffee in Centurion. Much to everybody’s delight, Lynnwood and its neighbouring suburbs are bustling with exciting new shops and restaurants giving residents ample choice. Nestled between the frequented Lucky Rodrigo and Forkies Real Food Parlour in neighbouring Menlo Park is the new home of the second Vintage Coffee.
The opening
We joined Kevin and Rebeca along with their friends and family to celebrate the start of a whole new chapter for Vintage Coffee. Guests were treated to a variety of signature drinks, and Forkies Real Food Parlour’s wood oven pizza made sure nobody went hungry. This symbiotic relationship between Forkies and Vintage Coffee started when Forkies became the supplier of the sandwiches at the shop. Vintage Coffee officially opened its doors to the public on 6 June and was instantly buzzing with excited customers.
The Green Beans
Vintage Coffee regularly hosts coffee workshops where the curious and passionate can learn more about the basics of good coffee. Kevin and Rebeca also take pride in their
volunteer trainee baristas known as Green Beans (referring to unroasted coffee beans). The “Green Beans” team was an integral part of the opening as they prepared a variety of drinks, such as the chocolate brownie cup drink made by Daniella – she calls this signature drink the dirty mud cup.
The space
In contrast to its older sibling’s dark metro tiles and big airy space, the new Vintage Coffee is light and compact. White and grey hexagon tiles on the walls and parts of the floor create an effortless minimal, albeit interesting, space. Coffee enthusiasts can enjoy a cup of coffee in one of two cosy window nooks. Be sure to check out the customdesigned counter made of Brazilian slate – a detail that celebrates Rebeca’s heritage and their time in Brazil. O
ne of the big trends coming out of the international trade shows at the moment is the revival of all things iridescent. This shimmery finish is an interesting one in homeware because it’s naturally and technologically inspired. At times, it draws on natural sources like motherof-pearl and insect carapace but can also mimic oil and holograms, depending on the material used. Either way, the important thing is that the trend is moving away from more youthful expressions we’re used to and into discerning homeware for the first time in a while.

Internationally, designers like the German studio Neo/Craft have garnered attention for iridescent pieces such as the Iris pendant light. Inspired by soap bubbles, this piece has a simple form but features a surface treatment that changes colour based on ambient light and perspective. Similarly, Tom Dixon’s new range draws inspiration from oil slicks for its deep, dark, glimmer. One of the reasons we’re captivated by this kind of finish at the moment is because it isn’t static. As our digital interactions move back away from so-called skeuomorphism (making the digital look like the physical), physical objects are designed to follow suit. T
he trend towards modern heirlooms is an interesting one. We’ve seen designers play with distressed finishes in homeware for a while now, making new pieces look like they’ve survived a few generations. It’s something we’ve seen in all kinds of places – patina-covered metallics, worn wooden elements and any number of folk-inspired ceramics. Now, the same approach is being applied to textiles too, with brands creating pieces that move beyond restrained artistic antiquing to full-on rips, tears and more. This trend is all about techniques like patchwork, faded fabrics, loose fringes and over-dyed pieces. At international
furniture fairs we’ve even seen items being blowtorched and acid-splattered to really work the aged look. More than anything else, it’s an interesting (and refreshing) shift from the buttoneddown, often tailored look we’ve seen in pieces over the last few seasons. Internationally, brands such as the trade show favourite, cc-tapis, play into this look with products like the Oldie collection. The design of these carpets mimics the ravages of time, and the range comes ready-distressed for the discerning interior. Locally, however, we’re mainly seeing retailers play more with salvaged fabrics to create upholstered furniture and rugs. This application of the trend is
more consumer-friendly, but plays into the same aesthetic. The appeal here lies in the personalisation these pieces offer. No one else’s rug or furniture piece will have exactly the same look as yours because of the random nature of the manufacturing process. And because the pieces are already rather elegantly distressed, they’ll only get better with age.

alome Hoogendijk Photography is primarily a stock photography business, with additional services in lifestyle and commercial photography. Its main focus is on beauty, fashion and some wildlife photography. The lifestyle photography side of the business includes family and newborn photography, wedding photography, and boudoir sessions. Q: How did your business start? A: I initially qualified and practised as a dentist. My hobby was wildlife photography, branching out into weddings and family photography, and ultimately fashion. It eventually grew to such a level that I had to decide whether I wanted to pursue photography as a full-time career,
or not. I took the plunge to follow my passion. Colleagues of mine who work in the stock photography industry introduced me to the concept, and I then started to look into it as a viable option. It felt like a more proactive way of approaching the business of photography, rather than to wait for commissions and bookings. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: T he old east of Pretoria has always been a favourite of mine, with the established gardens, trees and larger homes, as opposed to some of the newer areas. We didn’t want to live in a security estate, and also wanted to be fairly central and close to good schools. This led us to the suburb of Faerie Glen, which has been our home and my business premises for a decade now. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We looked at houses with the possibility of business premises on site, initially for a dental practice, and found the perfect spot in Faerie Glen. The property belonged to a real estate developer who used a separate wing of the house with a separate entrance as his office. It needed little renovation to convert it into a practice. Once I made the career change from dentist to photographer, it was again easy to convert it into a studio. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Faerie Glen is very central in Pretoria, which makes it easy for clients to find me, and close enough to most stylists, models
and other collaborators. Atterbury Road is very close, which offers easy access from the highway. I also enjoy working in a relaxed, homey environment. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Residential owners. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Houses are around R2m and up, with rental of homes around R16,000/month and up. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: Since my stock portfolio is based internationally, and most of my sales occur abroad, most of my clients have never actually met me. As such, I have a very limited shop footprint. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: At some stage I want to expand my studio into a loft area for additional space. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: My business is based mainly online. Q: What’s your most popular item/service? A: My beauty stock is the most popular within my stock portfolio, and then I would say my family photography is next in line when it comes to popularity.

There are many reasons for this, and they are not getting any less compelling. The current political instability, the threat of violent crime and the worrying state of the South African economy are not small matters. For young people who have the opportunity to find employment overseas, it is therefore becoming more and more difficult to argue that they should stay. If they have desirable skills that are in demand in these economies, they may well be securing a more certain future for themselves. It is therefore not surprising that a recent survey found that more than half of current university students in South Africa want to move overseas to find work after they graduate. And while not all of these students will probably end up going, this desire to leave the country is a very harsh reality. It is also not something the country can afford to shrug its shoulders at. South Africa desperately needs the skills these students represent. One can take the optimistic view and say that hopefully they will come back, and the experience they bring with them then will be even more valuable. However, that is merely hoping for the best, because why would they come back unless there were compelling reasons for them to do so? This is a big issue that the country needs to face up to. In a competitive, globalised world, skills and labour are fluid. People can move freely, and they will move to the places where they believe their prospects are best.
The latest PPS Student Confidence Index found that 54% of respondents plan to move abroad for work in the next five years following their graduation
If South Africa wants to retain its skilled young people, it therefore has to create a more appealing environment for them. And that starts with forging an economy that welcomes entrepreneurs, encourages innovation, and supports small businesses. Young South Africans would not need to rush overseas to look for jobs if they could create their own wealth right here. And if they could do that they would not only be supporting their own futures, but the future of the country as well by creating jobs and driving economic growth. It is a reality where everyone wins, and it is the reality that South Africa could, and really should, be looking to create for its students.

Housing prices rebound countrywide
We can’t afford to lose W our talent or some time now South Africa has been losing a number of skilled young people every year. They have been leaving these shores to go to places like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK, where they believe the prospects are more appealing.
hile the South African economy is on all global ratings agencies’ watchlist, the country’s housing market appears to be staging a modest recovery. Those are the findings of the May 2016 Pam Golding Residential Property (PGP) Index. The index shows that after averaging 5,9% during 2015, residential property sales recorded a 7% average increase during the first quarter of 2016.
