If you’re in the Mother City and looking to have a wholesome and totally delicious lunch to linger over, then head to Hemelhuijs. Jacques Erasmus is inspiring in his roles as chef, artist, curator and owner. Menus are seasonal and you can still catch the winter menu which is gorgeous on so many levels. The venue is beautiful and tucked away just off the original city fan walk. I started with a carrot, beetroot and pomegranate craft juice served in a tall carafe with a straw. The winter salad of herb roasted artichoke, baked pear and avocado with walnut praline and Parmesan was tasty and nourishing. I also tried the tuna and seaweed tempura with daikon, fresh grapefruit and soy-ginger dressing: a light and an exquisite combination of flavours – just like winter on a plate.

Bosman Family Vineyards is as serious about making excellent Fairtrade wine as they are about their business being centred on the people that work there. It’s no surprise then that most staff live on the premises and own a large part of the business through the Adama Trust (staff turnover is less than 2%). I also love that there are women at the helm of the wine-making – Corlea Fourie and Natasha Williams. The Adama blends reflect the essence of what Bosman is about. While I enjoyed the creamy Adama White blend of seven cultivars, I really fell for the Adama Red which has a Shiraz foundation. With complex red fruit of plums and cherries to it, this is a seamless blend of Cinsaut, Grenache Noir, Nero d’Avola, Mourvedre, Primitivo and Viognier.

W

ith coffee being the second highest traded commodity in the world, the Aroma team saw a gap in the market when they opened a high-quality coffee shop four years ago in Brooklyn. Even though their main aim was roasting, making and selling authentic coffee, they eventually also started selling snacks and light meals. As a large part of their customer base are in the Brooklyn/Hatfield area during the day, but live in the East, and still want their Aroma coffee during the weekends, a second Aroma shop recently opened in Silverlakes. This time around, they had more space to work with, compared to their first shop, and decided to make the decor and design something special and different. The owners travel a lot and gathered ideas from all over the world to design the interior of Aroma Silverlakes. The decor most certainly is different, unusual and entertaining with items such as steampunk artwork, a marine fireplace, a carnival horn and a French

mixing bowl on wheels from the 1920s, a bar with genuine wings of a plane as a roof and a massive polystyrene face with different expressions being projected onto it. The outside terrace is filled with beautiful wooden furniture, umbrellas, flowers and small lights that add an almost tropical holiday feel during the day and a mystical magical feel at night. In this unique setting, one can enjoy proper coffee, a great variety of food and different and interesting drinks. To begin with, sample the baked camembert served with rosemary bread toasties and home-made cranberry and blueberry preserve. Their signature dish is the Aroma Crusted Fillet rubbed with mustard and coated in a Parmesan and herb crust, dressed in a béarnaise sauce. End it all off with the Red Freezo and the Peanut Butter Freezo, which will most certainly have you coming back for more. Aroma will also soon be hosting barista and home-barista training as well as coffee appreciation courses.

elalmar Guest and Wine Estate is not only Pretoria’s but also Gauteng’s only winery producing certified wines. Conveniently tucked away in the Pretoria suburb called Shere, Delalmar is the easiest way to experience a bit of Stellenbosch just a stone’s throw away from the capital.

The estate

In 2014, after a decade-long stint in commercial winemaking, the Visagie family made Pretoria the home of their charming wine cellar. Delalmar is situated in a peaceful environment that hosts a variety of plant and bird life. The wine cellar was created to mimic the likes of cellars you would find in France or Italy, and the aesthetics for the rest of the estate follow suit.

The wine

Delalmar sources grapes from its selfowned 3ha vineyard in Stellenbosch. The wine is then handcrafted in the Rhone-style and aged in French oak barrels in the Delalmar cellar, keeping the winemaking process as natural as possible. The wines are limited to a thousand bottles annually, of which each bottle’s bottling and labelling is done by hand. Winemaker and owner Johann Visagie suggests you first try the flagship wine, Syrah Maria 2011, for the best Delalmar experience.

Dalalmar’s love for Syrah as a cultivar has earned it numerous accolades, including the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 2014 for its 2012 Syrah.

The cellar

The estate caters for numerous events such as music concerts, weddings, product launches and, most importantly, wine tastings. The cellar is joined by a similarly styled tasting room, which can accommodate up to 60 guests. Guests can expect old-world charm and good food with some of the finest wines presented by the winemaker himself, accompanied by his wife, Marietjie. This personal touch and handcrafted attention to detail makes this an experience you’ll never forget. Delalmar wines can be purchased on the estate’s website and at selected Tops at Spar stores. You can also find them at the Cowhouse market in Silverlakes every Saturday and Sunday.

upping, which sounds like an awkward internet meme, is the universal standard by which coffee taste and aroma are determined, allowing coffee tasters in the US to identify the same elements on their palate as tasters in Africa or Europe. The global reference guide for this is the SCAA’s Coffee Taster’s Flavour Wheel (pictured right).

Smell first

The first step to a cupping involves smelling the dry grounds. You have to gently shake the grounds to release their aromas. Stick your nose in there and get a good whiff.

Add water

Next, hot water will be poured in to brew the grounds. You will immediately note that whatever the olfactory nerves in your nose identified when the grounds were in their dry state is nothing like the fragrance activated when wet. Hot water is an incredible conduit to scent.

A crust of grounds will rise to the surface as it steeps, and these carry a scent of their own. When the brew is ready, you break through the grounds with the back of a tablespoon.

Taste

The final step is tasting. Discard the crust so that you don’t end up with a coffee-speck-encrusted smile, and then bring your face intimately close to your cup, fill up your tablespoon with the brew and give an almighty slurp.

Apparently, at this point the seasoned professionals spit out the coffee so as not to “over-caffeinate”.

You almost have to inhale or “aspirate” it so that the full flavour covers your entire palate and lets you determine the mouthfeel or texture.

You don’t need to be a barista to enjoy a cupping. The only prerequisite is that you love coffee. And who doesn’t?

oschenka Stander set up her professional homebased accounting practice, DLP Accounting Services, in Leslie Road, Irene early this year. The property provides cost, proximity, space, flexibility, as well as creative advantages. Through sharing the property space between DLP Accounting Services and her home, Roschenka reduces rental, internet and electricity bills and is given the flexibility to balance her work and family life. Q: How did your business start? A: A fter working in the corporate world as a chartered accountant nationally and internationally, I decided to set up my own accounting practice in January because I realised the entrepreneurial route has enormous benefits. The structured work environment can limit your ability to be creative and follow an independent passion, but working for myself in Irene opened doors to both.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: This area feels like a small town within a metropolitan city and having a practice within a homebased format in my neighbourhood has many cost, proximity and creative advantages. It is between Joburg and Pretoria, 5km from a Gautrain station and 3km from the N1 highway. I work with clients from Tzaneen to Joburg, so proximity and easy access are crucial.

Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Property prices are on average between R2,6m and R3,2m in the area and between approximately R6,000 and R8,000 rental per month. They are ideal for any small business or home-based business.

Q: How did you find your premises? A: I found the property online. I worked and lived in Dubai for three years and I bought the premises via a property website on the internet from Dubai. My husband flew into South Africa to view the property before buying.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, when more staff are appointed, another office or two will be added, as well as consulting rooms and parking. There is more than enough space to expand the property.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The premises is perfect for me as it is integrated with my household, but separately managed, which contributes to productivity of the property. This enables me to use the space in the most advantageous way, saving on rental, electricity and internet bills and creating flexibility to spend time on creative matters and those that are not work related, like family, when I want. The neighbourhood has a relaxed environment enhancing easy problem-solving in my work. The property also inspires me to be creative in the set up of my business.

Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Indeed. Client requests are sourced and managed via my website and I have a strong presence on my Facebook and LinkedIn pages.

Q: What is your shop footprint? A: On average I see between one to five clients per day.

Q: What’s your most popular service? A: T he most prevalent requests are the compilation of financial statements, but accounting services from bookkeeping to professional consultation on accounting and financial related matters are offered.
