GET THAT ‘WOW’ FACTOR! REPAIRING THE DAMAGE Now’s the time to commit the rest of the coming year to looking after yourself with a diet and exercise regime that will have you looking good and feeling fit. This is traditionally the time when we think about summer holidays. How will you look in your swimsuit? Act now and deal with any unsightly bulges. Having resolved to start a diet, shed pounds and gain fitness you’ll probably discover how difficult this can be, especially if you are still preparing ‘normal meals’ for the rest of your family. That’s why you need the help of a professional – and you’re fortunate to have a nutrition and fitness expert in this local area. Lynda Loakes has some 25 years’ experience in running classes and has helped thousands of her class members to achieve their goals of losing weight and, just as importantly, improving fitness. Lynda’s classes are called WOW, not only because they are an amazing experience but also because the letters stand for Work Out With Lynda. When it comes to diet, Lynda advocates sensible eating which, once learned, will become a lifelong habit, not a ‘once every so often’ attempt at a quick fix. Lynda encourages ‘eating clean’ and all her menus involve cooking from scratch, using ingredients that provide just the right balance to keep the body healthy and fit. Don’t be put off, though, if your skills in the kitchen leave a little to be desired! Lynda’s recipes are simple and easy to follow, and time spent in preparation and cooking is kept to a minimum – and the ingredients are readily available and inexpensive. Even better, the meals taste superb! Lynda is very aware of the challenges that losing weight presents. She has been there herself so is keen to offer plenty of support to others. Fully trained in all aspects of nutrition, she helps class members to achieve their goals in a friendly and caring way. Each class starts with a private, one-to-one weigh-in, followed by a motivational talk. The exercises that follow cater for all ages and abilities and include high intensity fat-burning, muscle strengthening and overall posture and fitness improvement. Each week’s class is different, and Lynda has a wonderful sense of humour which creates plenty of fun and laughter. She encourages friendships that are built up in her classes with the camaraderie of mutual support from others aiming for similar goals. Lynda also arranges various social activities – parties and dances and she and her class members actively support local charities. Fitness-pilates courses are also offered by this very busy lady. Pilates exercises are

not strenuous and are suitable for all age groups and fitness abilities. They aim to enhance flexibility, build strength and develop a strong body core which improves balance and co-ordination. The classes run for an hour and are arranged as four-week courses and must be booked in advance. If you are serious about improving your looks and fitness in the coming year, why not go along to one of the Work Out With Lynda diet and fitness classes or enrol on one of her fitness pilates courses. You’ll be sure of a warm welcome from Lynda and her very friendly class members. Lynda’s website address is www.wowlynda.co.uk Email: lparter@blueyonder.co.uk Telephone: 020 8669 4316 Class times and venues are as follows:Monday – Fitness pilates courses 9.30 -10.30 a.m. – Highfield Hall, 320 Carshalton Road, Carshalton SM5 3QB; and 6-7 p.m. at Banstead Day Centre, The Horseshoe, Banstead SM7 2BQ. The Fine & Country Foundation The Fine & Country Foundation has been created to help combat one of the largest social issues in the UK – homelessness. Last year, the Government estimated around 2,414 people sleep on the street on any one night across England, a rise of 36% over three years. Often the reasons for homelessness are misunderstood, with many blaming the individuals for poor life decisions and carelessness. The reality is: people become homeless for a whole range of complex and overlapping reasons that cannot be avoided, such as family breakdowns, mental or physical health problems or debts. Solving homelessness does not only involve putting a roof over people’s heads, it is also trying to tackle the root of the problem and asking the question: why did they became homeless in the first place? The Fine & Country Foundation is dedicated to bringing together all Fine & Country agents in over 300 locations worldwide to raise awareness of the causes of homelessness whilst supporting homeless charities. We have a simple, effective way for you to raise money for The Fine & Country Foundation without the need to dip into your own pocket, climb a mountain or do a sleep out. Sign up to AmazonSmile! Through Amazon’s charity arm, 0.5% of net purchases come directly to us. There are no extra costs for your products. Amazon donates to us directly. Every penny that comes to The Fine & Country Foundation goes directly to homeless causes in the UK and overseas. Twice a year we distribute funds through our grant programmes. In 2018, we gave more than £100,000 to 25 homeless charities through our spring and autumn grant programmes. Each grant supports important projects and schemes, from skills workshops for young people, to converting shipping containers into self-sustaining homes. You may think that 0.5% of net purchases won’t make a difference to the amount we can raise, but you’d be surprised how this can add up. With these simple steps above, you can help us raise thousands of pounds to support more homeless charities. If you require any advice or help with your property requirements please feel free to contact us at any time.

A Brief History of
Sutton Grammar School By local resident, Brent Stevens
The school that is now Sutton Grammar opened its doors for the first time in 1899 as part of Sutton Technical Institute. The establishment of a secondary school for Sutton was funded in part from a Customs and Excise department fund, set up to compensate publicans who lost their licences and thus could not provide for their families. It was known locally as “whiskey money”. Around this time, Surrey County Council set up three other secondary schools at Wallington, Rutlish and School opening ceremony, 1899 Dorking (Ashcombe). The Institute was on a site now occupied by a tower block behind the Wilkinson store, between Throwley Way and the High Street. Since its foundation, the school has changed its name five times. It started life as Sutton County Secondary School and evolved into Sutton Grammar School. The first Headmaster was Mr E.Hensley, a mathematics graduate from Cambridge, who stayed in the post for 26 years. The nineteen boys who became the first pupils paid fees of £2 10 shillings a term. (The fees covered: tuition, stationary and text books.) Five boys were subsidised by the County as indicated above. Accounts from 1908 reveal that the county provided about half the income needed for the school, the rest came from the parents. Mr Hensley set high academic standards from the start. By 1908 the School had grown to 102 boys and by 1920 to 280, one third from the Sutton area and the remainder from the rest of Surrey. There were only twelve full time teachers employed and on a visit from the inspectors, it was suggested that the school was understaffed. However the expanding numbers demanded a bigger site. The new Head (1926), Mr Cockshutt, was also concerned that boys were leaving school early to take routine office jobs in London rather than staying and taking high ranking exams and he encouraged pupils to stay and do just that. In 1928 the new buildings in Manor Lane were ready for occupation. It was designed to house 500 pupils, a target that was reached in 1937. The original buildings contained an Assembly Hall, a dining room with kitchens, Art block, Workshop, four laboratories, head’s study, caretaker’s flat and 16 classrooms. In 1952, David Bellamy wearing his the council built a primary school within the on the site, plus a school cap, 2016

new canteen and replaced the grass with tarmac. The primary school moved out in 1969 and the building was used as a sixth form centre. In 1930, the school’s playing fields were adjacent to Nonsuch School, but with the Council and Old Boys’ help, a 27 acre sports field and pavilion in Northey Avenue was opened in 1964. Six years later an open air swimming pool was built at the school and is still in use. Sutton became a Grammar School in the wake of the 1944 Education Act. By the 1960’s the concept of selecting pupils at 11 to attend a particular type of school was being questioned, and many grammar schools became comprehensives. Sutton avoided this first challenge, but in the 1980’s, the debate re-surfaced about the status of the school. Parents and Old Suttonians rallied behind the School and the Council’s plans to close the site a build a new comprehensive School were dropped. The School became “Grant Maintained” in April 1992. This gave some financial independence from the Local Authority and a further step taken in 2011 was to become an “Academy” This gave even greater autonomy and such schools can implement their own curriculum, pay structures, timetable and term dates. Post 1992, the Governors were able to secure funding to improve the facilities. A Sport’s Hall was opened in 2007, a maths block in 2012 and in 2016 the old sixth form building was demolished and a new three storey structure with classrooms and a sixth form centre at the top was built. Initially, academy status brought financial benefits but in the last ten years, Government cutbacks have created problems. Parents stepped in to help and now contribute around £300,000 a year of voluntary contributions. Recently the School has expanded still further and the number of boys in a year group has risen from 120 to 135. Seventy-five of these pupils must come from the Sutton postcode area, the rest compete for places, although some consideration is given to pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. The new boys are divided into five classes of 27 as opposed to the old system of 4 classes with 30 boys in each. This and the admission of about 20 girls each year into the sixth form from 2017, mean that the number of pupils in the school has reached 1,000, a long way from 19 in 1899! Sutton Grammar School is seen as a real educational force locally and should be proud of what it has achieved. Although over 120 years old, the school recently appointed only its seventh Headmaster. My thanks to Mr Gordon Ironside who showed me round and answered my questions. He has just retired after 36 years service, 29 of which he was Headmaster. Thanks to Abby Matthews and her team at the Sutton Library Archive Centre for their help in finding and giving me permission to use some the older photos.
