A Brief History of

Sutton Grammar School By local resident, Brent Stevens

The school that is now Sutton Grammar opened its doors for the first time in 1899 as part of Sutton Technical Institute. The establishment of a secondary school for Sutton was funded in part from a Customs and Excise department fund, set up to compensate publicans who lost their licences and thus could not provide for their families. It was known locally as “whiskey money”. Around this time, Surrey County Council set up three other secondary schools at Wallington, Rutlish and School opening ceremony, 1899 Dorking (Ashcombe). The Institute was on a site now occupied by a tower block behind the Wilkinson store, between Throwley Way and the High Street. Since its foundation, the school has changed its name five times. It started life as Sutton County Secondary School and evolved into Sutton Grammar School. The first Headmaster was Mr E.Hensley, a mathematics graduate from Cambridge, who stayed in the post for 26 years. The nineteen boys who became the first pupils paid fees of £2 10 shillings a term. (The fees covered: tuition, stationary and text books.) Five boys were subsidised by the County as indicated above. Accounts from 1908 reveal that the county provided about half the income needed for the school, the rest came from the parents. Mr Hensley set high academic standards from the start. By 1908 the School had grown to 102 boys and by 1920 to 280, one third from the Sutton area and the remainder from the rest of Surrey. There were only twelve full time teachers employed and on a visit from the inspectors, it was suggested that the school was understaffed. However the expanding numbers demanded a bigger site. The new Head (1926), Mr Cockshutt, was also concerned that boys were leaving school early to take routine office jobs in London rather than staying and taking high ranking exams and he encouraged pupils to stay and do just that. In 1928 the new buildings in Manor Lane were ready for occupation. It was designed to house 500 pupils, a target that was reached in 1937. The original buildings contained an Assembly Hall, a dining room with kitchens, Art block, Workshop, four laboratories, head’s study, caretaker’s flat and 16 classrooms. In 1952, David Bellamy wearing his the council built a primary school within the on the site, plus a school cap, 2016

new canteen and replaced the grass with tarmac. The primary school moved out in 1969 and the building was used as a sixth form centre. In 1930, the school’s playing fields were adjacent to Nonsuch School, but with the Council and Old Boys’ help, a 27 acre sports field and pavilion in Northey Avenue was opened in 1964. Six years later an open air swimming pool was built at the school and is still in use. Sutton became a Grammar School in the wake of the 1944 Education Act. By the 1960’s the concept of selecting pupils at 11 to attend a particular type of school was being questioned, and many grammar schools became comprehensives. Sutton avoided this first challenge, but in the 1980’s, the debate re-surfaced about the status of the school. Parents and Old Suttonians rallied behind the School and the Council’s plans to close the site a build a new comprehensive School were dropped. The School became “Grant Maintained” in April 1992. This gave some financial independence from the Local Authority and a further step taken in 2011 was to become an “Academy” This gave even greater autonomy and such schools can implement their own curriculum, pay structures, timetable and term dates. Post 1992, the Governors were able to secure funding to improve the facilities. A Sport’s Hall was opened in 2007, a maths block in 2012 and in 2016 the old sixth form building was demolished and a new three storey structure with classrooms and a sixth form centre at the top was built. Initially, academy status brought financial benefits but in the last ten years, Government cutbacks have created problems. Parents stepped in to help and now contribute around £300,000 a year of voluntary contributions. Recently the School has expanded still further and the number of boys in a year group has risen from 120 to 135. Seventy-five of these pupils must come from the Sutton postcode area, the rest compete for places, although some consideration is given to pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. The new boys are divided into five classes of 27 as opposed to the old system of 4 classes with 30 boys in each. This and the admission of about 20 girls each year into the sixth form from 2017, mean that the number of pupils in the school has reached 1,000, a long way from 19 in 1899! Sutton Grammar School is seen as a real educational force locally and should be proud of what it has achieved. Although over 120 years old, the school recently appointed only its seventh Headmaster. My thanks to Mr Gordon Ironside who showed me round and answered my questions. He has just retired after 36 years service, 29 of which he was Headmaster. Thanks to Abby Matthews and her team at the Sutton Library Archive Centre for their help in finding and giving me permission to use some the older photos. Welcome back! This will be a year forever etched into the minds of this who lived through it. Within a generation or two, they won’t believe it happened and the associated events. For many of us during lockdown the perpetual repetition of dire news became a strain, by the resumption of some trade around mid May it was clear that the media and its sources didn’t really know what was happening, with facts redundant or out of date. The conjecture used when reporting on the economy, including the housing market was clearly based on assumption or old data. Well as anyone buying or selling a house will tell you, from mid May to now the market has been blistering good. Curiously even now the general public still unaware of how much demand there is from buyers and how prices have risen. With strict working procedures in place to safe guard against Covid, we ensure that any viewings that take place are as low risk as possible. Viewers are screened for health risks and PPE gear worn for any access. Additionally, the stamp duty holiday, although not the catalyst for the activity but the turbo boost button, has sent the market into over drive. We simply cannot meet demand with the current supply. However, normal taxation will be back in March 2021, although this sounds like a long way o be warned you must act now as houses can take months for the legal processes to complete. In summary, we are extremely glad to be back serving our community and invite all potential movers to contact us to discuss how we can help you take full advantage of the current climate and boosted prices. Senior Snippets from Tony Ward of Home Instead Senior Care (Sutton) Preventing hospitalization Over the past months we have seen just what a great job the NHS does for us but how many people, especially our pensioners, want to spend more time than necessary in hospital? Excluding Covid-19 issues, more older people than ever are being admitted to hospital but how many of these visits could have been prevented if the right support had been in place at home? There are many ways you can help prevent hospitalization among the older generation and so here are just 5 ways you can help do that for yourself or your loved ones. Keep Health in Check Having an excellent GP is essential but equally important is making sure that older people follow their GP’s direction. Ensure that regular blood pressure readings are taken as people with high blood pressure run a higher risk of having a stroke or heart attack. Keep an eye out for changes in health such as worsening chronic conditions or unused medication. Keep physically and mentally active Encourage your older relatives to get active where possible. Walking for just 5 or 10 minutes at a time several times a week is a great way to begin. Keeping the brain active through activities such as crosswords, drawing, or learning something new are also excellent ways to stimulate the connections between nerve cells. Maintain a healthy diet You should encourage your loved ones to work towards a balanced diet containing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish and starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice. Extra vitamin D and Calcium should also be on the menu to help combat Osteoporosis. Keep hydrated It is important that you or your family member stays hydrated, even if they say they are not thirsty. It is advisable to drink around 1.5 litres of fluid a day. Companionship Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to our health and so, when the current situation permits, it is important to encourage social activities. Joining clubs and associations or even volunteering to reach out and help others could all help with future well- being. In addition to the above, a regular check around the home looking for potential causes of falls (loose rugs, clutter, obstructions, poor lighting etc.) would also help to reduce the need for hospital stays.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of the above or any other elderly care issues, please call Tony Ward on 020 8773 7660 or email him. tony.ward@homeinstead.co.uk To advertise call 07894448189 or email carla@yourneighbourhooddirectory.com
