The History of

Belmont Village By local resident, Brent Stevens

One hundred and seventy years ago, Belmont was just part of Sutton Downs, an area that stretched all the way to Cheam. Remains from Roman and Saxon burial sites have been found in the soil, suggesting small numbers of people have lived here for many years. Mostly the land was used for grazing. Travel, especially at night, could prove hazardous, as highwaymen were in operation. The local pub was called “Little Hell” and fights between the clientele were not unknown.

Three events in the middle of the nineteenth century ended Belmont’s isolation and caused the population to expand. First in 1852, a Metropolitan School opened, taking children off the streets of London, housing and educating them and teaching Milestone on the Brighton Road them a trade so that they could leave to be apprenticed. The school stretched out along Belmont Heights and by 1895 housed 1,500 pupils. Most staff lived in but a few terraced houses were built for people working there in Downs Road.

California Arms in 1860

The second influence on Belmont’s growth was the arrival of the railway in 1865, when the line was extended from Sutton to Epsom Downs, thus providing cheap travel for those wishing to enjoy the Surrey

Hills or the Derby. Unusually the station took its name from the local pub, which was then called “The California”. The man who built it was John Gibbons. In 1849 he had fled England to avoid prosecution over poaching. He went to California to make money in the gold rush on 1848. He did this not by prospecting, but by opening a shop to supply those wishing to do so. After two years he felt it safe to return to England and with his new wealth, opened the pub named after where he had made his fortune. The third factor that influenced the expansion of Belmont was the decision of Middlesex County

Council to buy land and construct a lunatic asylum in the area now occupied by the prisons. The vast building, that could take well over a thousand patients, started to be constructed in the early 1870’s. Many of the materials needed for the building got lost in transit and some suspected that they were ending up in America by mistake. It was felt the name of the station was confusing and that it had to change. John Gibbon’s widow came up with the “Belmont” which reminded her of somewhere in America she had been happy. So both the pub and railway station changed its name to Belmont in 1875. Just recently, when the pub was re-decorated it reverted to being the “California” again, but the village and the station stayed as Belmont. The asylum was ready for use in 1877. With over 200 staff required to look after the inmates, houses began to be built to meet this new demand, mainly in Station Road and King’s Road. By 1900, Belmont village boasted 200 new homes and a population of 1500 people. Shops began to open to serve the new community. These included a grocer, an ironmonger, a stationer, a butcher a draper and a bank. The construction of St. John’s Church on Northdown Road in 1915 was confirmation that the focal point of the village has shifted away from Downs Road to Station Road.

During the Second World War, the school which had become a hospital, and the Asylum, were both secondary targets for the Luftwaffe. As a result of this, the “Belmont” Pub was destroyed by a direct hit in April 1941 from a stray bomb, destroying it totally and killing 10 people. It was not re-built until 1955. By this time Belmont village was absorbed by Station Road in 1908 Sutton. In 1986, the Asylum closed and two prisons were constructed in the 1990’s. The old school was also demolished at about the same time and a lot of new housing appeared along the Belmont Heights.

It was this new housing development that saw Belmont Village rise from the ashes. In recent years, the local resident’s association have held a fete every two years to raise funds for the Royal Marsden and this has helped foster a sense of community. The creation of a new doctor’s surgery on the Henderson Hospital site with a pharmacy, was prevented. This meant the local chemist is now thriving and recently the local pet shop opened as a Post Office. Belmont village is thriving again. I have lived in Belmont since 2001. It is where I buy my bread, get my haircut, get a verruca extracted, have the occasional cooked breakfast, purchase a bouquet of flowers, get medication and used a company to replace our old wooden windows. We now have local shops serving the local community. All I need now is an Italian restaurant to match the Indian cuisine provided! GET THAT ‘WOW’ FACTOR! GIVE YOURSELF A ‘SPRING CLEAN’ Every year the time comes when we notice the sun is shining, daffodils are in bloom, there’s blossom on the trees and wonderful bird song all around us. With this realisation comes thoughts that summer is just around the corner – and will those pretty summer dresses, shorts, bikinis and swimsuits still fit after an over-indulgent Christmas season and comfort eating to cope with the cold, dark winter days that followed? It’s not just a question of whether those clothes will fit, either. We need to look in the mirror and honestly evaluate how those clothes look on our ‘winter bodies’. Are we as toned as we were last summer, or have we developed flabby upper arms, paunchy stomachs and fleshy legs? No need to panic. Help is at hand. Just be positive and commit to embarking on a diet and fitness regime that can deliver real results within weeks. If you can’t muster enough will power to do this yourself, there’s a very inspiring lady who can help you. She’s Lynda Loakes and she runs local classes that promote healthy living through diet and exercise. Her company name is WOW, the initials standing for ‘Work Out With – Lynda’. Lynda has had nearly 25 years of experience in promoting the benefits of healthy eating combined with sensible and safe exercise. She is qualified to teach exercise to music and her routines incorporate low impact aerobics, muscle toning and ways of strengthening the body’s core to improve posture. Also trained in nutrition, Lynda can advise on weight loss goals and ways of achieving them. She speaks from experience, having lost over four stones herself some time ago – and, equally importantly, has managed to maintain that loss by a combination of healthy eating and exercise. Classes start with private weigh-ins (no-one but you and Lynda know your weight) and a short motivational talk follows. The rest of the class is devoted to exercise. Lynda’s many strengths include enthusiasm and encouragement to help class members to achieved their goals. More encouragement is provided by Lynda’s weekly newsletter which reminds class members about their goals and helps to to reinforce their resolve. Menus are also included which are not only ‘healthy’ but delicious, too. Lynda promotes the establishment of strong friendship bonds among class members and she also arranges various social activities and charity events. Although the object of the classes is serious - to lose weight and promote fitness they include a huge element of fun. Lynda’s sense of humour adds something very

special to all of her classes. So, if you’re unhappy with your body, if your clothes don’t look as good as they should, and if you’re lacking in energy and motivation, why not make some positive changes to your life right now – feel great, get healthier, make friends and have fun – all at the same time. Go WOW now, and when you try on those summer clothes and look in the mirror, you’ll say WOW (and so will your friends and family!). You can read more about Lynda and her classes on her website: www.wowlynda. co.uk.

Live and LET live

I’ve worked as an estate for many years and during that time seen many changes ranging from marketing, advertising, bureaucracy, compliance. However one of the most stark changes with property is how property letting has gone from strength to strength and become as popular as buying. With the many pressures of modern life and the desire for instant results, renting a property has become the new norm. Piggy backing off our successful sales arm and reputation for the very best customer service, Fine and Country have created the new letting service from our Cheam Office. With options including fully managed; taking care of all the day to day running of property, let only; referenced tenants and full set up service, rent collect; full set up service and income collection. Our service offering covers all options required. The letting market is going to experience a systemic change this year as the ban on charging tenants for credit checks, inventories and references comes into effect. Regardless of whether you are a seasoned landlord or a first timer contacting our lettings team will provide invaluable advice and is a must. As the market evolved after the credit crunch back in 2008 with buyers choosing to retain property and let to buy it will be interesting if with this new change along with the additional reducing tax relief how the market will accommodate the changes. Again contacting us for further advice is highly recommended. Trying to lure new buy to let investors, mortgage rates are still exceptionally low for specialised buy to let mortgages. As an existing arm of Fine and Country our mortgage brokerage services provide free no obligation advice. After a busy 2018 for sales, 2019 has started steadily. Whilst all of us watch with some bewildering fascination the farcical events in Westminster, its been mostly business as usual. Without any confidence the extension will make a difference to agreement of any deal, buyers have long given up on waiting it out and continue to buy. In the next three months I hope to see more sales property come to market after a general shortage. For more advice on Lettings or Sales please contact Adrian Macleay-Wood on 02087703377.
